Mittagong, Bowral Moss Vale & Bundano Mittagong - the gateway
to the Southern Highlands. Mittagong township is rich in history and is known as the gateway to the Southern Highlands. The town has a number of stunning heritage buildings, art galleries, antique and craft shops. It is a great place to search for that special antique or book and enjoy good food and wine. There are hotels, cafes, restaurants, and take-aways. The RSL offers dining, entertainment, large gaming areas and even accommodation.
Bowral - home to the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Bowral is a most delightful country town situated in a valley at the foot of Mt.Gibraltar. Due to the high altitude of the Southern Highlands, the town enjoys gorgeous autumns as exotic European trees and shrubs change their colour.
The shopping precinct in Bowral has an atmosphere like that of few other country towns as it offers an eclectic variety of boutiques, bookstores, antique and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. A highlight for cricket fans is the International Cricket Hall of Fame. Outdoor sports include golf at one of the town’s excellent courses.
Moss Vale is central to
Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office, the Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of 19C architecture.
oon The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale has a large part of the local Industry as well it is a minor centre for agriculture. Many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.
Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a heritage charm about it. The town has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. The area is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Berrima Celebrates Australia Day - Friday 26 January 2018 The Australia Day Celebrations in historic Berrima, over the last 10 years, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events. Visitor numbers are in the vicinity of 5000 to 8000 thousand every year and on the increase. What’s the attraction? Probably the location. No other village in the Southern Highlands can claim to have a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nations calendar of public holidays. With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family; grand parades, vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets and face painting; there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure. The official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30 am where young citizen and citizen of the year awards are given by the mayor of the shire.
24 www.monthlyimag.com.au
This is followed by an address by the Australia day ambassador. After the awards ceremony it’s off to enjoy the rest of the day to hunt for that allusive piece of craft either in the market square in the more traditional shops in Berrima. Mums and dads don’t forget to stroll over to the area known as Kids Corner. Jeff Patterson amusements will have his jumping castles and other fun rides. Another great favourite in kid's corner is the farmyard nursery where children can actually go into the compound, pat the animals and get photos taken by mum or dad or even the grandparents. Kid's corner also has swings and slippery dips and provides shade for all, as the family takes a little rest from their hectic and exiting Australia day celebrations. The grand parade on Australia day 2018 of course is open to all who wish to enter however individuals or organisations must register. For details contact Colin Gelling the manager for the Australia Day event at the Berrima courthouse 48771505
GOULBURN ARTIST REDISCOVERED Six words on an Electoral Roll –
“Liggins, Ethel Clara, George Street, Artist”. Intrigued that, in 1913 in Goulburn, there was a woman earning her living as an artist, local researcher, Margaret Kearns, set out to “find” Ethel and discover why there were no traces left of her life in Goulburn. The result of her research is an illustrated biography entitled Coming Home to Goulburn – Celebrating the Life and Art of Ethel Clara Liggins. Daughter of Goulburn couple, Ephraim and Sarah Liggins, Ethel was born in 1886. Her family relocated to Walsall, England in 1900 so her father could pursue lucrative business opportunities and this is where, in 1903, sixteen-yearold Ethel enrolled in art classes at the Walsall Science and Art Institute. An obviously gifted student, in 1905 Ethel “carried off the biggest number of prizes at the Walsall Institute” and was awarded the Institute’s highest honour, the Kirkpatrick Scholarship. One of her drawings was even acquired by the Board of Education in 1908 to be displayed in other art schools throughout England to show students the standard to which they should aspire. Returning to her home town of Goulburn in 1912, Ethel opened “The Studio” in Auburn Street, where she taught painting, drawing and craft for the next 15 years. She diversified her business in 1922 by opening a salon selling high-
end fashions, furs and exclusive hand-crafted jewellery. Ethel married Goulburn photographer, Jim Brown, whose pictures taken at the beginning of the twentieth century provide fascinating glimpses of Goulburn’s past, such as the removal of the last gas lamp from the main street after the installation of electric lights Ethel Clara Liggins was, in many ways, a woman ahead of her time. She was an astute, successful businesswoman, strong, determined and independent, buying and selling property in her own name. And she always kept a clear sense of her own identity, using her maiden name in her business dealings and to sign her artwork. Ethel died in Goulburn in 1951, aged 65. To coincide with the book launch, there will be a retrospective exhibition of Ethel’s artworks and Jim Brown’s photographs at Goulburn’s Gallery on Track. The exhibition will be officially opened by former NSW Education Minister, Rodney Cavalier, AO.

Robertson
the green heart of the Highlands Robertson is the lushest
of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.
Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.
Robertson Show 2 & 3 March 2018 There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open until the spectacular fireworks display, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons. Show jumping returns to centre ring with the main event as a six bar on Saturday afternoon. Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes. Don’t forget the high quality exhibitions on offer with Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their
stuff. Numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and Gig races, women’s pumpkin lawn bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition. This year we “turn back time” with the bullocky, working dogs and heavy horses along side the old favorite of the Berrima District Old Machinery Club reminding us of times gone past. Whatever tickles your fancy rest assured you will find it at this year’s Robertson Show. Ph: 4885 1620 or 00411 537600
