Manzana studied with his father, Camille Pissarro from a very early age, spending his formative years surrounded by distinguished artists of the Impressionist movement, such as Monet, Cézanne, Renoir and Gauguin, all of whom frequented the Pissarro home. At his father's side, Manzana learned not only how to paint and draw but also how to observe and love nature.
Camille and Manzana Pissarro in Camille’s Studio at 204, rue de Rivoli, Paris
Les Tuileries was painted from the apartment Camille had rented at 204, rue de Rivoli in Paris. From this apartment, Camille painted his series Le Jardin des Tuileries, a series that captured the garden through various elements such as rain, fog, autumn and spring, an example is Camille’s Le Jardin des Tuileries et Le Pavillon de Flore, Matin, Printemps, 1990. Manzana would have painted his version of the garden, under the direction of his father who was known for always sharing his artistic wisdom with his sons, and this is evident in the manner in which Manzana has composed this piece, as the overall depiction mirror’s Camille’s Le Jardin des Tuileries series. During the early 1900s Manzana regularly exhibited Impressionist works at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendents, as well as Durand-Ruel and Druet in Paris.
