Welcome . . .

. . . to the 2014 Summer Season at the Theatre in the Hills – and to Home Again!

To mark Scotland's second Year Of Homecoming, our 2014 Season will be a joyous, wide-ranging celebration of Scottish theatre voices. Whether urban or rural, contemporary or historical, funny or sad, all the rich, rewarding stories in the Home Again Season are the creations of Scottish playwrights and authors.

To help you do just that, we've created some very special Home Again ticket offers which provide a number of ways 01 that you can see more for less (see page 15 for full details). And so that you can start planning your visits to PFT today, you will find details of some excellent Pitlochry accommodation in this brochure.

From much-loved works by those giants of Scottish theatre in the first half of the 20th century, J.M. Barrie and James Bridie, to hugely entertaining plays by modern masters such as Scotland's Makar, Liz Lochhead, and River City creator Stephen Greenhorn, via an exciting new Highland musical (whisky-themed – again!) and a superb adaptation of a classic Scots novel, we've brought together a programme for the Year Of Homecoming that should delight audiences old and new alike.

For all the other events and activities during the Summer Season - Sunday concerts, Active Arts workshops, tours, talks, the Explorers Garden - a more detailed brochure will arrive in February next year, brimming with everything that makes a visit to PFT so special.

Given the entertaining, high quality Season that lies ahead, I hope that you'll be eager to see all six shows.

We hope that you will thoroughly enjoy sampling the Best of Scottish Theatre at Scotland's Favourite Theatre next year. But before then, there's still our Winter musical, the Scottish première of It's A Wonderful Life, to see – the perfect treat for the festive season! John Durnin Chief Executive & Artistic Director

Whisky Kisses

book and lyrics by Euan Martin and Dave Smith, music by James Bryce “In the old days, the distillery closed in the summer. We called it ‘The Silent Season’. And now it looks like the silence is going to last for ever . . . “ Somewhere in the heart of a rolling Highland glen, one of the last familyowned distilleries is in trouble . . . Having inherited a mountain of debt from her father, Mary McGregor faces a stark choice. Either close the business - and threaten the livelihood of everyone in the village - or sell her one remaining asset: the very last bottle of an ancient, fabled malt whisky . . . The Glenigma! For Mary, closure isn’t an option. So reluctantly, she posts a notice online: The Glenigma is to be sold. Electrified by the news, whisky fanatics from across the globe descend upon the distillery to compete in the planned auction, amongst them the two obsessive

collectors who seem favourite to secure the prize: Ben Munro, a Wall Street wheeler-dealer, and Yomo Yomostushi, a Japanese industrialist. But the soft Highland air has a strange effect on visitors. And The Genigma isn't the only attraction in this beautiful, remote location. So perhaps it’s not so surprising that when the battle for the bottle begins, things don’t turn out quite as anyone expected . . . Following in the footsteps of Whisky Galore – A Musical! in 2009, this funny, romantic and exuberant new Scottish musical, performed by our large, highly talented cast of actor-musicians, will be the flagship production in the 2014 Summer Season. Slàinte mhath!

“ . . . full of humour and theatrical energy . . . an upbeat but sophisticated musical that captures both the global and local dimensions of 21st century Highland life.” The Scotsman

Dedicated by Mrs Rachel Cunningham to her children.

Perfect Days by Liz Lochhead

“I don't see how I can possibly be pushing forty when I still don't even know what I want to be when I grow up.” A successful celebrity hairdresser in Glasgow, with her own TV show and a smart loft apartment in the Merchant City, Barbs Marshall has it all. Hasn't she? Perhaps not. For Barbs is thirty-nine. And single. And unhappy. And is becoming deafened by the ominous ticking of her biological clock . . .

Not even Barbs's best pal, the gorgeous but camp-as-Christmas Brendan, seems able to help her deal with this onslaught of mid-life crises. But then, out of the blue, Barbs meets Grant – attractive and thirteen years her junior - who might just be the answer to all of her problems. Aye, right. If only . . .

Whilst Barbs is coming to terms with this new-found desire for a baby, her own mother Sadie wastes no time in helpfully pointing out the perils of single parenthood (don't even mention test tubes); her oldest friend Alice suddenly reveals that she's been keeping Barbs in the dark about a Very Big Secret; and Barbs's estranged husband Davie casually mentions that he's acquired a new, much younger girlfriend.

Sharply observed, moving and wickedly funny, this story of one woman's search for love, companionship and motherhood amidst the bustle of contemporary life is a modern romantic comedy par excellence. If you enjoyed our hugely popular production of Liz Lochhead's Good Things in 2009, then this is must see! Please note that this play contains strong language

“Lochhead’s writing is a vigorous mixture of sitcom humour and psychological probing, and with this play she has placed herself firmly at the front rank of Scottish writing” The Sunday Times

The Admirable Crichton by J.M. Barrie

“Life, Crichton, is like a cup of tea; the more heartily we drink, the sooner we reach the dregs.” Lord Loam is a somewhat unusual example of the aristocracy. Believing the divisions in British society to be entirely artificial, he enjoys subverting the norm during monthly tea-parties at Loam Hall, forcing his three rather superior daughters and his well-to-do guests to mingle with the servants as equals - to everyone's profound embarrassment. His butler, Crichton, who espouses altogether more traditional views, is naturally appalled by his master's radical opinions. For Crichton, there is a natural order to things in the life of a stately home, which should never be upset. For Crichton, there must always be masters and there must always be servants.

But what if the circumstances were to change? When disaster strikes during a tropical cruise, the Loam family are marooned on a desert island with a group of friends and servants – including, of course, Crichton – and survival becomes the name of the game. In such a desperate situation, strong leadership is needed. And, in time, a leader does indeed emerge. But not, perhaps, the one that was expected . . . One of the best known and perhaps the best loved of Barrie’s plays, this classic comedy from 1902 is a deftly constructed and sparklingly witty satire that still resonates today. A huge hit with audiences when it was last staged at PFT in 2001, miss this at your peril!

“A masterful spoof on the British class system” The Guardian

The Yellow On The Broom based on the novel by Betsy Whyte

by Anne Downie

“In ma mind I'll be oot cookin' over an open fire, wi' the stick reek in ma nostrils, or maybe gatherin' the fruit o' some byeway hedge for supper.” Berry picking, neap pulling, basket making: Scotland's travelling folk stayed close to the land, following the changing seasons from place to place, sleeping beneath the stars, selling the wares they made. But by the mid-1930s, this centuries-old culture – and an entire way of life – was under threat . . . For young Bessie Townsley, travelling the roads of Perthshire and Angus with her family and friends is education enough. But the law says otherwise and the Townsleys have to winter in Brechin in order that Bessie can attend her compulsory 100 days of school. And from her fellow students, Bessie soon learns that the travelling life she loves prompts very different reactions in others . . .

Yet Bessie turns out to be an excellent student and, encouraged by a sympathetic teacher, becomes a candidate for a high school scholarship. But if Bessie is to fulfil her potential, the Townsleys may have to abandon life on the road for good. For her parents, it's a sacrifice worth making. Others, however, will do anything to stop a “dirty tinker” from succeeding . . . Heart-warming, poignant and funny, Anne Downie's superb adaptation of Betsy Whyte's classic novel takes audiences on an enthralling journey along the rural roads of pre-war Scotland, using music and traditional song to recreate the now vanished world of Scotland's travelling folk.

“rich, enchanting and moving play… the lyrical lilt, the variety and vividness of character and scene make for memorable theatre.” The Scotsman

Passing Places by Stephen Greenhorn

“A map’s not for telling you where to go. What it tells you is exactly where you are. It only describes your position. You have to decide your own destination and journey.” Alex and Brian: a couple of Motherwell lads going nowhere. Until, that is, Alex unfairly gets the sack from the sports shop where he works and, in a moment of drunken retribution, ‘borrows’ a surfboard from the window display and press gangs Brian into joining him in a clapped-out Lada heading for Thurso – Surf Capital of the North!

to encounter the Scotland of the history books. Instead, they discover a land they never knew existed. There's bothy culture, castles and ceilidhs, and spectacular landscapes, right enough; but digital crofters, Heilan' hippies, mystic surf gurus, installation artists, Ukrainian mariners and Canadian geologists? Where did they all come from?

But unfortunately for our two heroes, this particular surfboard happens to be the prized possession of the shop’s owner, the psychotic gangster Binks. And no sooner does Binks discover the theft than he's donning the leathers, kick starting the Suzuki – and beginning an epic pursuit.

After a triumphant production of Passing Places in 2007, PFT is delighted to be once again presenting this high speed comedy from the creator of River City and Sunshine On Leith: a fast-paced, wise-cracking road movie for the stage that heads relentlessly (and hilariously) towards a final showdown on a freezing Thurso beach at dawn. . .

En route to Thurso, travelling the winding single track roads, Alex and Brian expect

Mr. Bolfry by James Bridie

McCrimmon: “Are there kirks in Hell?” Bolfry: “Why not? Would you deny us the consolations of religion?” 1942: World War II is raging, drawing millions into an epic global struggle between good and evil. Yet in a Manse of the Free Kirk somewhere in the Western Highlands, on a dreich Sunday afternoon, the struggle is more about staving off boredom . . . The moralising Minister, Mr. McCrimmon, and his wife have reluctantly done their bit for the war effort and allowed two English soldiers, Cully and Cohen, to be billeted at the Manse. But Cully and Cohen are young city-dwellers, with little interest in McCrimmon's puritanical sermons. And they're bored. And having been “blitzed about” a bit in London, Jean, the McCrimmons' very modern niece, is also staying at the Manse, taking

a week's holiday. . . and she's bored, too. And it's about to rain. Again. But then Cohen stumbles across an unusual book in the Manse library, which seems to contain instructions for raising the Devil. Well, that might help pass the time, mightn't it? So after the McCrimmons have retired for the evening, the threesome gather at midnight and begin to read aloud . . . The plays of James Bridie have played a special part in PFT's history and after our hugely successful revival of Dr. Angelus in 2011, we are delighted to restore another of Bridie's fascinating moral fables – clever, witty, mischievous and ironic – to the Pitlochry stage.

"It pulls off the rare trick of being theologically engaging at the same time as wryly amusing… Mr. Bolfry is not only just well built, it's built to last." The Herald

Dedicated to my parents who, many years ago, first took me to the Theatre in the Hills. Anne.

Barbara Dickson & Rab Noakes 32

Date & Time: Sat 12 April, 7.30pm Tickets: £20.00 – price held until 31 December Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes have been friends since they were 17 years old. When young, they sang and played together frequently as part of various line-ups. Now, they've reunited to play acoustic concerts and festivals where they will sing songs from traditional to 20th21st Century, each chosen for meaning in both repertoires. Rab's continuing

reputation as a fine singer-songwriter and Barbara's as an interpreter of new and traditional songs with a contemporary edge will be their aim. They came from the folk revival of the 1960s and their quality is rooted there. They are delighted to be 'going on the road' together after so long.
