Welcome Believe it or not, this will be the 10th Autumn-Winter-Spring programme at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. So it seems entirely appropriate that we make PFT history this year by staging our first ever PFT Classic and our first ever Winter Musical! For the first PFT Classic, we’re reviving one of the most popular productions in PFT’s long history: the American comic masterpiece, Arsenic And Old Lace. Starring a host of familiar PFT faces - and some exciting new ones - this is your chance to reacquaint yourself with the completely insane Brewster clan as they take to the PFT stage once more in Joseph Kesselring’s hilarious black comedy.

In January, we kick start Scotland’s literary year with the Winter Words Festival, including author Tom Pow, popular politician and former solider Paddy Ashdown, climbing legend Mick Fowler and actor turned author, Max Benitez, to name just a few (for further details of the lineup so far, turn to page 21).

And then there’s something we’ve been dreaming of . . . White Christmas! Thanks to the support of Creative Scotland, Perth & Kinross Council and all of our Friends, supporters, donors and patrons, we’re delighted to announce that our plans for a Winter Musical have finally come to fruition and Irving Berlin’s smash hit musical, White Christmas, will be the highlight of PFT’s festive Season. Without doubt the greatest Christmas show of all time, White Christmas is set to eclipse every other musical staged by PFT in recent years. Turn to the centre pages to find out more.

whilst the wonderful Pasadena Roof Orchestra, will be Puttin’ On The Ritz. To say nothing of the ever-popular Active Arts workshops (see pages 22 and 23 ) and the 81st SCDA Scottish Final of the National One Act Play competition to stimulate, engage and entertain!

And there’s more - from Scottish Opera and the return of the Enchanted Forest with Flow, this year’s light and sound show spectacular, to a host of outstanding tribute acts including Classic Clapton, Take That 2, Buddy Holly, Doris Day and The Peggy Lee Story...

Then there are concerts from friends old and new: the amazing Skerryvore return for a fourth time,

Whatever the season - Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer - there’s always plenty of superb entertainment at PFT. And with a wide selection of accommodation partners, restaurants and retail therapists to cater to your every whim, there’s never been a better time to take a relaxing break in the creative heart of Scotland. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Theatre in the Hills very soon. John Durnin Chief Executive & Artistic Director

Abby and Martha Brewster? Why, they’re just sweet, eccentric old ladies, who wouldn’t harm a fly. Such is their kindness that a gentleman guest never leaves their Brooklyn boarding house without a good meal and a refreshing glass of something nice. If any of their gentleman guests had a more sensitive nose, however, they might detect a faint odour of something else in the glass. . . something a little like bitter almonds . . . Abby and Martha’s favourite nephew, theatre critic Mortimer Brewster, has no idea about his aunts’ secret. Until, that is, he travels to Brooklyn to introduce his fiancée, Elaine, to the old dears - and makes a discovery that turns his world upside down!

Back by popular demand! Immortalised in the 1944 film starring Cary Grant, Joseph Kesselring’s hilarious black

comedy is one of the most popular plays in American theatre history and proved a huge favourite with PFT audiences when previously seen in 1990 and 2002. What better choice as the first PFT Classic?

Unearthing India’s Hidden Treasures

A Seminar with Colin Liddell

with Julia Corden

Training for all Charity Trustees

Julia Corden, a modern day plant hunter and Manager of the Explorers Garden, travelled to the remote North East Corner of India this year. Her mission was to explore Arunchal Pradesh, an area very close to both the Bhutanese and Chinese borders, in the hope of unearthing new botanical treasures in this unchartered region.

Colin Liddell, the only Accredited Specialist in Charity Law outside Edinburgh and Glasgow, is giving another 90 minute rapidfire Seminar for Charity Trustees. This will provide Charity Trustees with practical guidance and a valuable insight into the various aspects of their role, actions and responsibilities as Trustees. The Seminar will cover a lot of ground including comparing the Guarantee Company with the new Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Aimed at Charity Trustees and senior members of charity management teams, this is your chance to revisit, update or revise your knowledge with one of Scotland’s Charity Law experts. A special 2 course supper will be served beforehand in the River Room Restaurant at 6.00pm, booking essential. All proceeds to Pitlochry Festival Theatre, a registered Scottish Charity.

Climbing (and botanising) up to altitudes of 4,800metres, Julia and her group specifically explored many high alpine passes in search of new and rare species of Meconopsis and Primulas, amongst other flora. Journey with Julia and discover the amazing and unusual botanical specimens she and the group unearthed. This fascinating illustrated talk will feature images of many rare and exotic features – both plants and landscapes - from her Indian adventure.

A fresh look at Verdi’s deeply moving tale of a love denied, this new production also celebrates the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth. Director Annilese Miskimmon (newly-appointed Artistic Director of Danish National Opera) gets right to the heart of the story that centres on the turbulent relationships at its core. Violetta, a famed Parisian escort is in fragile health. Tired of living an empty life, she sees a way out when Alfredo introduces himself. Falling deeply in love, all is bliss until some home truths convince her to leave Alfredo and head back into the arms of another . . . The sheer concentration of drama makes La traviata the perfect piece to present at PFT, and Verdi’s music only heightens the spectacle. It encompasses an astonishing range of moods and emotions, from Alfredo’s fresh-faced charms to Violetta’s vivid effervescence, which is perfectly captured in Sempre libera, a vocal showpiece to Date: Sat 10th November rival any other. . . Pasadena Roof Orchestra

Stephen Venables

The welcome return of this unbeatable, authentic live orchestra, playing popular music from the 1920s and 1930s.

From the disappearance of Mallory and Irvine in 1924 to the 1996 disaster when 12 people died on one day, Everest has proved a formidable challenge to even the most experienced mountaineers.

Puttin’ On The Ritz!

Pasadena Roof Orchestra’s music is a form of modern classic. It stands on the shoulders of giants like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Hoagy Carmichael – composers who wrote unforgettable melodies and sophisticated romantic lyrics. PRO’s tunes are still the alltime standards and towering achievements of the song-writers art. When it comes to dance band and early swing music, the PRO has no equal, performing the finest arrangements by the best musicians under the directorship of band-leader and singer, Duncan Galloway. This will be a fantastic performance, packed full of fun and rhythm – we guarantee you’ll have a great time!

Date: Sat 9th March

The Everest Story

In 1988, Venables wrote his own epic chapter in the Everest story. With a team of just four climbers, he pioneered a new route up the gigantic East Face, reaching the summit alone, without supplementary oxygen. Caught out by darkness on the descent, he survived a record night alone in the open, without tent or sleeping bag, at 28,000 feet. Twenty-five years on, Venables weaves his account of that epic expedition into the bigger Everest story, from the first attempt in 1921, to Hillary and Tenzing’s triumph in 1953, to today’s controversial commercial expeditions. This will be a fascinating evening in the company of an internationally acclaimed mountaineer. Date: Fri 22nd March

Famed for his pitch perfect interpretations and stunning live performance, John Hylton and his talented live band will bring you all your favourites from the huge Diamond songbook, including Cracklin’ Rosie, Sweet Caroline, Daydream Believer and Love On The Rocks to name just a few!

Classic Clapton is the No.1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band, featuring front man Mike Hall, who not only looks like Eric but sings and plays guitar like him too! The band comprises of four excellent musicians who stunningly recreate Slowhand’s electrifying stage performances.

This brand new show takes its name from Neil Diamond’s song Brooklyn Roads, which recalls his high school days in New York – the same school Streisand also attended!

SCDA Scottish Final Festival Of One Act Plays

F I N As L TTISH S C Oal of One Act Play Festiv

Welcome to the 81st National Final of the SCDA One Act Play Festival! Every year, the Scottish Community Drama Association runs a One Act Play competition which draws entries from up to 200 clubs from all over Scotland. This year’s final will feature eight plays which have fought their way through twenty four District Festivals and four Divisional Festivals. Three plays will be presented on both Thursday and Friday evening, with two plays, plus the final adjudication, taking place on Saturday evening. The man with the unenviable task of selecting the winners will be Brian Marjoribanks. Brian, who is also an accomplished sports journalist, is a highly experienced adjudicator over many Drama Festivals and competitions across Scotland and Ireland too. Each evening, he will give a short adjudication of each play before announcing his final placings on the Saturday.

The finalists will not be known, of course, until the end of March, but if recent Finals are anything to go by you can rely on a mixture of drama and comedy presented with flair and enthusiasm, and representing the very best of Scottish amateur drama. Pitlochry Festival Theatre is delighted to once again play host to this major event in conjunction with the SCDA, which has acted as the representative body for amateur theatre in Scotland since the 1920s. With the eventual winner representing Scotland in the British Final in July, this will be three evenings of entertainment, drama and high tension – good luck to everyone involved! Dates: Thurs 18th to Sat 20th April Tickets: £13.00 - £15.00 All three nights: £33.00 - £39.00 Venue: Main House Time: 7.00pm
