Carmen

Scottish Opera

Sung in English New translation by Christopher Cowell Orchestral re-working by Derek Clark

Beautiful gypsies, obsession, bullfighters and some of the liveliest rhythms in opera . . . it can only be the much loved Carmen. This new production is set in 1960s Spain, a country firmly entrenched in General Franco’s right-wing regime. Women are oppressed, the gypsies ghettoised, the country is riddled with poverty, and black-market smuggling is rife. As a woman wanting to break free, the stakes are high for Carmen. An outspoken gypsy with a beautiful face and a fiery temper, she sets her sights on the soldier Don José. His desire leads him to deny his friends and position and he is soon living a life outside the law. As his relationship with Carmen disintegrates and she leaves him for another, he sets out to prove his love - but Carmen has seen the future in her tarot cards and it isn’t a happy one. Bizet’s boldly seductive opera has been one of the world’s favourites for over a century. From the sultry Habanera to the naively passionate Flower Song and the rousing Toreador’s Song, this will be a Date: Sat 23rd October fantastic night Time: 8.00pm of opera at the Festival Theatre. Perthshire Amber - The Dougie MacLean Festival 29th October to 7th November 2010

“Dougie MacLean has created a wee gem of a festival in his home county . . . a drop of Amber nectar!” However, this 10-day event is no longer ‘wee’, as over 6,000 people from 17 countries last year attended this “unique festival which shares inspiring music, celebrates the history and culture of Perthshire and showcases beautiful scenery” (The Scotsman). The 2010 Festival includes five concerts during the two weekends here at PFT, plus a host of other interesting events such as Open Mic sessions, talks, guided walks, workshops, displays and the weekday early evening Cabaret Amber – all back due to popular demand!

Friday 29th October, 7.30pm Dougie MacLean & Julie Fowlis

Saturday 30th October, 7.30pm The Heritage Concert

Julie Fowlis “could be the first Scottish Gaelic crossover star in the making” (Daily Telegraph). Mark Radcliffe hailed her voice and songs as “enchanting, beguiling and as fascinating as songs by Kate Bush and Björk” and KT Tunstall described her voice as “formidable and amazingly rhythmic”. Her band will include the wonderful musicians Éamon Doorley (bouzouki), Highland fiddler Duncan Chisholm, driving guitarist Tony Byrne from Dublin and award-winning bodhrán player Martin O’Neill.

Sunday 31st October, 7.30pm Dougie MacLean & Crooked Still (USA)

This concert will see Dougie MacLean, along with a stunning line-up of musicians, share his take on some of the songs that inspired him to become a songwriter himself. Usually only sung around his kitchen table, this will be a rare chance to see Dougie perform these “Dougie MacLean is a performer of special songs from his past, from traditional ballads extraordinary warmth and ease . . . he has a knack for turning the experiences of his own life to songs from his youth and those penned by the troubadours from whom he learned his trade. He will, into something universally understood, as well of course, include some of his classic arrangements of as a gift for bestowing each with just the right the songs of Burns and Tannahill. melody” (The Scotsman).

call: 01796 484626

This rare musical combination of two of Scotland’s finest musicians will prove irresistible and is likely to sell out in advance, so get your tickets early.

10

This will be a stunning combination of music in one evening!

Dougie MacLean will be joined by his good friends violinist Greg Lawson and accordionist Pete Garnett. Each is already a festival favourite and between them they have an awesome musical pedigree (Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Mr. McFall’s Chamber, Salsa Celtica, The Dougie MacLean Band and, of course, Moishe’s Bagel!). Greg’s playing is characterised by an intensity and a tone which sings every inch of the way and Pete’s rootsy box groove will be the perfect compliment to Dougie’s songs and melodies.

Perthshire Amber is now in its 6th year!

“…they play their instruments gorgeously, radiating warmth and a deep love of the music and songs. Aoife O’Donovan has a voice of rare, stunning purity and clarity” (Sing Out!)

Friday 5th November, 7.30pm Dougie MacLean & Grada (Ireland)

This concert is a “must see”!

Following the success of last year’s sell-out concert with Beoga, Dougie MacLean is delighted to welcome the hugely respected Irish band Grada, who have received glowing reviews for their albums and performances which always highlight their energy, musicality and vocal mastery.

“Playing traditional and original music in a high-energy manner, Grada has captured a strong audience. They combine ‘globe-trotted’ experience with musical accomplishment!” (Irish Music Magazine) “Grada is a band with star quality . . . they fine-tune their compositions, breathing ever more life into them, until they become stand alone pieces of exquisite beauty” (The Event Guide)

The Trustees’ Toolbox In Search Of The Blue Poppy A seminar with Colin Liddell

A Botanical Adventure in Bhutan

Training for All Charity Trustees

In July 2010, Explorers Garden Manager Julia Corden was granted special permission by the Bhutanese government to join a small group of plant hunters and enthusiasts to visit and explore the beautiful Kingdom of Bhutan, a country she first visited in 2008.

It is almost five years since Colin Liddell, an accredited specialist in Charity Law, gave a talk at Pitlochry Festival Theatre on what was at that time the forthcoming Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. In light of pending changes to this Act, Colin has put together a new seminar, which will provide Trustees with practical guidance and valuable insights into the various aspects of their role, actions and responsibilities as trustees. In addition, Colin will include a number of tips and personal recommendations.

call: 01796 484626

Aimed at Trustees of charities together with, where relevant, members of management teams, this is a rare chance to revisit, update or revise your knowledge with one of Scotland’s leading charity law experts.

14

A special 2 course supper will be served beforehand in the River Room Restaurant at 6.30pm. All proceeds to Pitlochry Festival Theatre, a registered Scottish Charity.

Relive Julia’s journey, which began in Nikka Chu and moved along and up to the Tempe Tshao at 4,336m, before crossing into the high mountain terrain where back in 1949, the famous plant hunters Sherriff and Ludlow scoured the landscape in search of extraordinary flora. Julia took over three weeks to reach her destination, where her team may have discovered – this is still to be confirmed! - two new species of Lily as well as new sites and locations for the very rare pink poppy Meconopsis sherriffii. Hear about Julia’s amazing botanical adventures, not to mention encounters with smugglers and life-threatening landslides, together with stunning images from a modern day plant hunter.

The Duke of Wellington’s battle against Napoleon started with a tiny foothold in Portugal in1808 and ended with the decisive battle of Waterloo in 1815 and the destruction of Napoleonic France. Dan’s book, Death Or Victory, relates the epic history of the battle of Quebec, the death of Wolfe and the beginnings of Britain’s empire in North America. This lively evening’s entertainment will be further enhanced with the liberal sprinkling of abundant eyewitness accounts from the journals, letters and memoirs of soldiers who fought in the battles, as well as slides and maps. There will be a chance to ask questions and a book signing after the show.

A rare opportunity to spend an evening with one of the world’s most renowned musicians. In this intimate concert, Julian will perform many all-time classics, accompanied by Pam Chowhan on piano. Expect to hear timeless favourites by Bach, Faure, Saint Saëns and Debussy, as well as works by his brother Andrew and father William. Julian will also reminisce on his many collaborations with musicians as diverse as Yehudi Menuhin, Joaquin Rodrigo, jazz greats Cleo Laine and Stephane Grappelli, as well as Elton John and, of course, his brother Andrew. Julian celebrates his 60th birthday in 2011 with Travels With My Cello - a long and colourful journey from his humble beginnings as London Underground’s first official busker! Make sure you take your seat with the man often described as ‘the doyen of British Cellists’.

Get together with great minds once again, as Winter Words introduces a great combination of ideas, discussion and wonderful words for a seventh successive year! Already confirmed for 2011: One of Britain’s best known writers, Louis de Bernieres (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Birds Without Wings) is coming to the Festival to read from his work and play an amazing variety of instruments, accompanied by flautist and keyboard player Ilone Antonius-Jones. Phil Cool, with his rubber face and elastic words, was one of the best known comedians of the 1980s. Now he’s back, to tell his story for the first time and entertain with his very special brand of humour. Phil Cool Died Here (And Lived To Tell The Tale) is a book packed with hilarious, farcical and at times poignant anecdotes recounting Phil’s real rags to riches story. Unmissable! The Barber of Seville Swansea City Opera

The Golden Days of Musical Satire

100 Years Of Taking The P***

call: 01796 484626

Performed in English

24

Rossini’s ever-popular comic opera is a vivacious, satirical delight, packed full of dramatic and musical wit, with charming costumes with a superb score.

The Golden Days of Musical Satire takes the funniest songs of the last hundred years and throws them together in a 90 minute, one man and his piano show!

Set in Seville in the late 18th Century, a young Spanish nobleman, Count Almaviva is in love with the beauteous and rich Rosina, ward of the lecherous Doctor Bartolo, who plans his own marriage to her. Along comes the meddling Figaro, the town barber and suddenly we have all the ingredients for confusion and mayhem . . . but will there be a happy ending?

You’ll hear side splitting serenades such as Allan Sherman’s Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, Flanders and Swann’s The Gas Man Cometh, Victoria Wood’s Barry and Freda, Bernard Cribbins’ Hole in the Ground, Noel Coward’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, The Goons’ Ying Tong Song and Tom Lehrer’s Poisoning Pigeons in the Park.

Swansea City Opera has built a fine reputation for professional, high-quality touring opera since its inception in 2004. They have performed at PFT many times and played this production of The Barber of Seville to a packed house in 2005. We’re delighted to welcome them back.

Following the outstanding success of An Evening With The Humour of Bob Newhart and Tom Lehrer back in June, we are delighted to welcome back the hugely talented Peter Gill in this brand new production.

Friends of PFT: we are delighted to invite you to join us for an exclusive pre-show talk and supper with SCO’s Artistic Director Brendan Wheatley.

For anyone old enough to have developed a sense of humour, whether they are hearing the songs for the first time or the hundred and first time, this is a rare chance to catch some of the funniest songs ever written and performed - all in one show!

Moscow Ballet Coppélia

PFT favourites Moscow Ballet return for a fourth time with two sure-to-sell-out performances of Coppélia. A classical ballet in three acts, originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon for the Paris Opéra to a libretto in which he collaborated with Charles Nuitter, and set to music by Léo Delibes, Coppélia features constantly in the repertoire of the world’s leading ballet companies and is widely regarded as one of the jewels of classical ballet.

The flirtatious Franz is captivated by a beautiful stranger – to the despair of his feisty fiancée Swanhilde. But, of course, it’s all a bit of a windup (pun intended!) and true love eventually wins the day in this truly enchanting tale of the eccentric Doctor Coppélius and his beautiful clockwork creation.

The Spirit Of World War II

Bless ‘Em All is a programme of wartime songs and music from the ever popular Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields and Edit Piaf, amongst others. And then there’s Glen Miller, the sound that epitomised the spirit of the age. Join us for an evening of wartime music and a touch of nostalgia.

Karen’s stunning vocal talents have mesmerised audiences worldwide. Sean Connery described Karen as having “a throat surely touched by the hand of God” and Billboard magazine described her as “the finest Gaelic singer alive today”, but this tells only part of the remarkable story of a singer at the forefront of the Celtic music scene. As a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various collaborative projects, including the award-winning BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, where she recorded tracks with Emmylou Harris, The MacGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith, Paul Brady and a host of respected musicians.

The Mikado

Apocalypse No!

Barbershopera

Koko, a cheap tailor in the town of Titipu, rises to the high rank of Lord High Executioner, but is somewhat distracted from his duties (which includes cutting off his own head!) by the beautiful Yum-Yum. Sadly, she’s set her sights on Nanki-Poo, a wandering musician whose true identity (he is the son of the Mikado) is concealed. But that’s the least of Koko’s problems: the Mikado is about to arrive and find out why there have been no executions for over a year!

The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most admired and best loved works, a comic opera packed with plenty of well known songs including I’ve Got a Little List, A Wand’ring Minstrel I, Three Little Maids, The Flowers That Bloom In The Spring, Tit Willow and many more. This year Dunfermline G&S Society celebrates its 40th anniversary with this special first performance at PFT.

In this hilarious musical comedy, Barbershopera bring their tongue-twisting a cappella talents to a tale of the Apocalypse so outrageously apocryphal that Terry Pratchett would be proud to call it his own! Following the bi-millennial audit of Earth, the four Archangels – you can tell them by their haloes – advise God that the planet is beyond redemption. Money, politics, love and slow hand-driers have ruined human kind. God thus decides to send in the four Horsemen – you can tell them by their hobbyhorses – to bring about the Apocalypse. As a result, mainly due to a beautifully punned mistake, an ordinary school teacher (Beth) ends up riding with War, Famine and Pestilence when Death fails to show. Performed in four-part harmony, this latest show from the popular and delightfully talented Barbershopera (a big hit at this year’s Festival Fringe) promises a lively and entertaining evening of musical comedy - not to be missed!
