Welcome to the 2011 Summer Season In 1951, John Stewart’s dream of creating a rural Festival Theatre for Scotland became a reality. After overcoming countless obstacles, the Theatre in the Hills was finally born . . . in a tent! Sixty Years Later, some things have changed: the tent is no more; we’ve relocated across the Tummel into a purpose-built theatre. But Stewart’s central ambition - to present a wide range of high quality productions in repertoire each Summer - is still what guides us today. And to celebrate our 60th Anniversary, we’ve assembled a Season which looks back to PFT’s formative years, reflects on change and the passage of time, and is composed of the kinds of show that you, our audiences, have most enjoyed over the years.
after a four year break; another PFT favourite, Sir Arthur Wing Pinero, features with his vivacious, nostalgic Victorian comedy, Trelawny Of The ‘Wells’, which receives its first ever PFT production; and as the great farces have always been part of the Pitlochry mix, we just had to include Philip King’s hilarious See How They Run! - a 1940s classic packed with bulldog spirit. Then we head deep into the jungle for Peter Nichols’s Privates On Parade, a bawdy musical memoir of National Service - with full-on barrack room banter! To complete our 60th Six Of The Best, there’s Dr. Angelus by James Bridie, a Scottish thriller-cum-black comedy that marks another anniversary: that of Bride’s death in the very year that PFT was born.
So the Sixty Years Later Season opens with one of the music theatre greats: the dazzling, wonderfully witty My Fair Lady. With a large cast of actor-musicians, sumptuous costumes and fabulous sets, it’s the perfect choice to follow Whisky Galore - A Musical! and Kiss Me, Kate. Stay Six Days, See Six Plays What better way could there be to Encapsulated in our famous slogan start the Anniversary celebrations? - Stay Six Days, See Six Plays - PFT is a theatrical phenomenon, operating But that’s just the beginning: the a unique repertoire system which futuristic and ferociously funny Henceforward . . . marks the welcome offers a different show every night of the week – two on matinée days! return of Alan Ayckbourn - the This means you can literally stay most popular living playwright at for six days and see six different PFT over the last thirty years plays. My Fair Lady
Book and Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, Music by Frederick Loewe adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion
A perfectly ‘loverly’ musical 1910: on a cold March evening in Covent Garden, the overbearing Henry Higgins, a Professor of Phonetics, encounters a young flower seller, Eliza Doolittle. Whilst appalled by Eliza’s strangled vowels and missing consonants, Higgins opines that it is only her mangled English and coarse manners that separate her from the so-called Upper Classes . . . And so results an outrageous wager between Higgins and the amiable Colonel Pickering: in just six months, Higgins promises to transform Eliza so completely that she will pass for a Duchess at the lavish Embassy Ball. But Eliza’s gradual metamorphosis under Higgins’s relentless tuition comes at a terrible price. Too eloquent for a flower girl, yet without the breeding and education of the aristocracy, what will become of her when the wager is over? Lerner and Loewe’s bewitching tale of a flower girl’s transformation into the toast of London society is one of the greatest musicals of all time. Featuring unforgettable songs such as I Could Have Danced All Night, On The Street Where You Live, Get Me To The Church On Time and many others, this much-loved musical is sure to be a sell-out! Featuring a large cast of actor-musicians, sumptuous costumes and a spectacular stage design, this will be a perfectly ‘loverly’ way for you to celebrate 60 years of magic at the Theatre in the Hills.

A comic tale of man, music and machines! It’s sometime quite soon - and the predictions about Britain becoming a ‘broken society’ appear to have come true . . . Cities have become no-go areas. The police are nowhere to be seen. And Jerome, a lonely composer suffering from creative block, is the last resident of his highrise tenement. Surrounded by synthesizers, monitors and computers, his only companion is NAN 300F, a robot nanny who seems almost human - despite not functioning quite as intended. Well, she was assembled from spare parts . . . Jerome is desperate to gain custody of his teenage daughter, who lives with his estranged wife, Corinna. Knowing that his unconventional lifestyle is unlikely to endear him to the Department of Child Wellbeing, he tries to hire out-of-work actress Zoë to pose as his fiancée and play happy families for the benefit of Mervyn Bickerdyke, the Child Welfare Officer.

See How They Run! by Philip King
A classic, chaotic wartime farce Merton-cum-Middlewick, 1942: the inhabitants are braced for an imminent Nazi invasion. But Miss Skillon, the spinsterish village busybody, considers that a far greater danger threatens the Reverend Lionel Toop. Not only is his new young wife Penelope thoroughly ‘modern’ - and worse, an actress - but Miss S. is also convinced she’s . . . having an affair . . . The blameless Penelope, meanwhile, is delighted when an old actor friend drops in. Clive Winton, now in the army, has a day’s leave from guarding German POWs at a nearby camp. Spotting that Private Lives - which holds fond memories for both - is playing at the local theatre, Penelope suggests a night out. But as army regulations prevent Clive from visiting town, Penelope dresses him in one of her husband’s spare clerical suits, so he can visit the production in disguise . . . But then a mysterious, unidentified intruder arrives at the vicarage, desperate for a change of identity – and clothes. Closely followed by Clive’s long-suffering Sergeant. And Penelope’s uncle, the Bishop of Lax. And Humphrey, a rotund locum priest . . . One vicarage, five vicars - two of whom aren’t. Everything you need for a classic British farce! First seen at PFT in 1956, See How They Run! is simply one of the greatest farces of all time: brilliantly constructed and achingly funny.
“ . . . proves that farce is the essence of theatre in that it requires physical agility, spot-on timing and is capable of transforming a preposterous situation into spiralling ecstasy.” The Guardian 06 01796 484626 • www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

Trelawny Of The ‘Wells’ by Sir Arthur Wing Pinero A vivacious Victorian comedy Rose Trelawny, the effervescent rising star of Sadler’s Wells, faces an agonizing decision: should she give up the carefree world of the theatre in order to please the Establishment family of Arthur Gower, with whom she has fallen hopelessly in love? Or should she forsake her beloved to pursue the glittering theatrical career that beckons? Heart rules head. With theatreland in mourning, Rose prepares for a respectable new life in Cavendish Square – as before the wedding, she is to spend a period ‘on probation’ at the Gowers’ home, under the watchful eyes of Arthur’s grandfather, the choleric Sir William Gower Q.C., and his prim great-aunt.

Privates On Parade
by Peter Nichols, music by Dennis King A bawdy musical memoir of National Service 1948, the Malayan Emergency: whilst most of Britain is getting used to peacetime once again, the British army is engaged in a forgotten war against Communism on the other side of the world. Its secret weapon? The Song and Dance Unit South East Asia - or SADUSEA . . . The task of creating a variety show to entertain the troops has fallen to Acting Captain Terri Dennis, the finest Marlene Dietrich impersonator ever to hail from Lancashire. The problem is that he’s been landed with a bunch of wet behind the ears National Service types who can’t tell a tap step from a tea cup. If having to master Fred and Ginger duets and the Western Approaches ballet wasn’t enough, the Unit also has to cope with a deranged Sergeant Major who’s up to something iffy on the black market, a CO who’s convinced that Christian piety can defeat the Red Menace – and a couple of Chinese servants who aren’t quite what they seem . . . Based on Peter Nichols’s own National Service experiences whilst entertaining the troops alongside Kenneth Williams and Stanley Baxter, Privates On Parade pays a nostalgic and wildly funny tribute to the dying days of Empire and the swansong of the concert party. This will be the Scottish première production of the revised 2001 version of Nichols’s classic comedy – another Anniversary first!
“What a joy, what an absolute joy – Privates On Parade is a complete hoot from start to finish” The Yorkshire Post “The power of Peter Nichols’s play lies in constantly blending glittering humour and acerbic irony” The Sunday Times 10 01796 484626 • www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

Dr. Angelus by James Bridie A disturbing comedy-thriller Glasgow, 1920: Dr. Johnson - earnest, English, newly-graduated - seems to have fallen on his feet when he is invited to join the Glasgow practice of the esteemed if somewhat eccentric Dr. Angelus. With a steady flow of patients and the constant guidance of his philosophizing new mentor, Johnson’s future looks positively rosy. But it soon become apparent that all is not as it quite seems in the Angelus consulting rooms. Angelus’s mother-in-law is seriously ill with a mysterious, debilitating condition, despite receiving around-theclock care from Angelus himself. The relationship between the married Dr. Angelus and his precocious maid Jeannie doesn’t seem entirely proper. And the renowned consultant, Sir Gregory Butt, reveals grave concerns about Angelus’s medical skills – and advises the young Johnson against signing any death certificates for “unexplained” demises . . . One of the last great works written by the founding father of the modern Scottish theatre, Dr. Angelus part psychological thriller, part pitch black comedy - was made famous by Alistair Sim’s mesmerizing performance in the title role in the original 1947 production. Now the dark doctor returns to mark the anniversary of James Bridie’s death in 1951, the same year that PFT was born. Welcome to the strange and deadly world of Dr. Angelus!

Like every other UK arts organisation, however, PFT will be affected by the unprecedented cuts in funding for the arts that begin in 2011. We estimate that we will need to raise an additional £300,000 every year to sustain the large scale, high quality productions for which PFT is justly renowned. That’s why, in addition to developing a range of new commercial opportunities, we are launching the following initiatives in our 60th Anniversary year: • A new Friends programme, to reward those of you who come to PFT more often. • The Festival Circle, to make it easier for those of you who would like to become donors. • The John Stewart Society, for those of you who would like to commit to higher levels of giving. • A new Legacy programme, to enable our supporters to leave a Legacy to PFT in their Will. In recognition of your support, we will offer each member a tailored programme of stimulating and enjoyable opportunities, providing special insights into the life of the Theatre in the Hills. In short, we want those who join The John Stewart Society to become highly valued members of the PFT family. Unlike theatres in major cities which have a mostly local customer base, our audiences tend to be more widely geographically dispersed. In recognition of this, The John Stewart Society programme will be personalised to ensure that all members get the most from their membership, however frequently you visit Pitlochry. If you would like to find out more about The John Stewart Society, please complete the form on page 26 or call Fran Norris or Annie Hibberd on 01796 484600.
Within The Festival Circle, we are especially keen to encourage regular contributions - monthly, quarterly or annually - so that we can plan ahead with confidence, knowing exactly what funds will be available to invest in PFT’s work. We also appreciate that some donors will wish to make single gifts and this support is equally welcome. Your donation will be eligible for Gift Aid, further increasing the amount that PFT receives, so if you would like to help in this way, please just complete the form overleaf.
What we will do in return: • We will send you a letter of thanks acknowledging your donation. We will also send you an annual donor newsletter carrying news about PFT and the impact your donation has made. • We will list Festival Circle donors on the website and in our Summer Season programme, unless you tell us you do not want your donation to be acknowledged in this way. • You will be invited to a special Festival Circle event at the Theatre in every year you are a member of the Festival Circle.
