Stay 6 Days, See 7 Plays

Welcome to the 2016 Summer Season at Scotland’s favourite theatre – one which promises to be the most exciting that we have staged in recent years!

For the first time since 1996, the unique British theatrical phenomenon that is PFT’s repertoire Season will contain seven productions. Not only that, but the 2016 Season will also feature two very special theatre events: the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical ever to be staged at PFT - the muchloved, deeply moving Carousel - and the first UK revival in over ten years of Ayckbourn’s extraordinary Damsels In Distress trilogy: three completely different modern comedies - GamePlan, FlatSpin and RolePlay - each with characters unique to that play, but all performed on the same set by the same seven actors. This will be a unique, unmissable treat, particularly on our two Trilogy Days, when you can see all three plays in a single day! This festival of theatre will also include the Scottish première of Clive Francis’s acclaimed 2013 “revision” of Thark, Ben Travers’s hilarious haunted house farce from 1927. This will be joined by a rare revival of Noel Coward’s This Happy Breed, a classic story of family life between two World Wars, in which the cast age 20 years before your very eyes. And completing the Season is Stephen Jeffrey’s adaptation of Dickens’s Hard Times, a thrilling story of betrayal and sacrifice set against the background of the industrial revolution in 1840s Lancashire. With such diverse theatrical talent on offer and given the remarkably high

production standards for which PFT is renowned, I hope there is something here to suit every taste and that you’ll be eager to join us for several – if not all! – of the productions on offer. To help you do just that, we’ve included some exclusive ticket offers that provide a number of ways to see more for less - turn to page 17 for more details. Pitlochry offers a wide selection of places to stay which cater to every taste and budget, from camping and caravan sites, to boutique guesthouses and luxury, five star spa hotels, all within easy reach of PFT: to help you start planning your break today, you’ll find details of these in this brochure. Information about other events and activities during the Summer Season – including concerts, brand new Active Arts workshops, our ever popular tours and talks, and the Explorers Garden (newly endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society) – will be included in a more detailed Summer Season brochure, distributed in March 2016. I hope to see you next year at Scotland’s Most Welcoming Theatre (our most recent accolade in the 2015 UK Theatre Awards). But before that, there’s the small matter of reviving our five-star, award-winning musical, White Christmas, to which I must attend . . ! John Durnin Chief Executive & Artistic Director

Carousel

Music by Richard

Rodgers Book & Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II “Jest keep yer faith and courage, and you’ll come out all right. It’s like what we used to sing when I went to school. ‘When you walk through a storm keep yer chin up high . . . ’ Know thet one?” New England, 1873: when a travelling carnival pitches up in a small fishing village, an unlikely relationship develops between the charismatic carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, and Julie Jordan, a naïve local mill worker. Within weeks - and against everyone’s advice - the seemingly illmatched lovers are married. But Billy’s fiery temper quickly causes problems for the newly-weds. After losing his job, Billy begins to feel hemmed in by the constraints of married life. And his financial difficulties quickly mount. The discovery that he is soon to be a father only intensifies Billy’s need to find some cash – and fast So when Billy’s friend, the shady sailor Jigger, suggests that robbing the local mill owner could solve all of Billy’s problems,

Billy doesn’t take much persuading. But the robbery goes horribly wrong - and Billy ends up risking not only his life, but also his immortal soul . . . A dramatic testament to the enduring power of love, Carousel is Rodgers & Hammerstein’s towering achievement. Featuring a large cast and live orchestra, PFT’s flagship production for 2016 promises unforgettable musical entertainment, including June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, If I Loved You, Mr. Snow and, of course, the heart-rending You’ll Never Walk Alone. If you loved our previous productions of Broadway classics, such as My Fair Lady, Hello, Dolly! and Kiss Me, Kate, you’ll love this!

“Sparkling lyrics and ravishing score.” The Telegraph

“Rodgers’ score is a seamless delight. And Hammerstein’s lyrics are, arguably, his very best.” The Guardian

Thark

by Ben Travers adapted by Clive Francis “I do wish you’d stop calling it that. Besides, it isn’t haunted. It’s just unlived in. Ridiculous to call it haunted.” Things are looking up for sporting, man-about-town, Sir Hector Benbow . . . Not only has he finally managed to offload his gloomy country pile, Thark, onto an unsuspecting buyer, but he’s also caught the eye of the beautiful Cherry Buck. And while his wife is away visiting friends, Hector plans a romantic liaison à deux. Unfortunately, Lady Benbow returns home unexpectedly - and Hector has to act fast. Helped by Ronny, his plucky nephew, Cherry is passed off as Mrs. Frush, the new owner of Thark - only for the real Mrs. Frush to suddenly turn up, complaining that the house she bought in good faith turns out to be haunted . . .

Hector manages to talk his way out of the, er, marital misunderstanding. But it seems that the only way to convince Mrs. Frush not to renege on the house purchase is for the Benbows to decamp to Thark - and prove that it is untainted by the supernatural. But Thark – a very strange house, inhabited by an even stranger butler and several things that go bump in the night – has other plans . . . Ben Travers’s classic 1927 Aldwych farce, in a glorious new version by Clive Francis, is fast-paced, rip-roaring and hilariously inventive: perfect Summer entertainment! If you enjoyed See How They Run! or Noises Off, don’t miss this!

GamePlan by Alan Ayckbourn

“They say you can buy just about anything on the internet, these days, don’t they?” Sorrell Saxon has a pretty wonderful life: she attends a posh private school and lives in a smart Docklands apartment, this enviable lifestyle made possible by her parents’ lucrative online business. Yes, a pretty wonderful life . . . Until, that is, Sorrell’s father walks out, the family business collapses, her mother Lynette has to take a cleaning job and there’s no money to pay the school fees. Then Sorrell is faced with the prospect of bidding her wonderful life farewell and moving to somewhere more affordable. Like Birmingham . . . Appalled, Sorrell decides that she has to arrest her family’s downward spiral. Unfortunately, her plan to turn things

around involves reinventing herself online, of course - as a provider of . . . ahem . . . “adult services” . . . Roping in her gawky best friend, Kelly, to assist, Sorrell prepares to entertain her first client. But dabbling in ‘the oldest profession’ is never straightforward. And Sorrell’s plan falls apart before it even starts. And when the police knock at the door investigating a suspected murder, changing schools is the least of Sorrell’s problems . . . The first play in Ayckbourn’s dazzling Damsels In Distress trilogy, GamePlan is a sharp, contemporary black comedy of metropolitan morals and mishaps. If you enjoyed Communicating Doors in 2012, you’ll love this!

“ . . . constantly entertaining and alert.” The Sunday Times

“ . . . bold running gags . . . one must give thanks that Ayckbourn is still knocking them out after all these years.” The Daily Telegraph

“absorbing and entertaining”

The Scotsman on Communicating Doors Each play in this trilogy is an entirely separate, stand-alone story, featuring completely different characters. Uniquely, however, all three plays share the same actors - and the same set!

FlatSpin

by Alan Ayckbourn “This is a – what do you call it – a sting.” The things actors have to do when they’re out of work . . . Rosie, for example, takes cleaning jobs. Today, it’s a swish Docklands apartment she’s tackling with the Marigolds, whilst coping with the disappointment of having just missed out on a big TV job. And then the doorbell rings . . . It’s Sam, a new neighbour of the flat’s absentee occupant, Joanna. Sam is kind, handsome, sympathetic . . . and an investment consultant. So when he mistakes the dispirited Rosie for Joanna and offers to pop back later to cheer her up by cooking dinner for them both, singleton Rosie can’t help thinking her luck’s about to change - over a plate of gnocchi with Sam.

But dinner doesn’t quite go to plan. What with the strange phone calls, Sam leaving abruptly, the pair of heavies turning up at the door, the discovery that the flat’s bugged and the whole drug smuggling thing. Soon, Rosie realises there’s an awful lot she doesn’t know about the woman she’s impersonating. And that no one is quite who they seem. And that she just might be in an awful lot of danger . . . With echoes of Hitchcock’s North By Northwest, FlatSpin is an hilarious, high-energy story of mistaken identity, magic and misdirection, featuring twist, after twist, after twist. If last Season’s Improbable Fiction caught your fancy, book your seats now!

“Alan Ayckbourn is unstoppable.” The Guardian

“If you want to fall flat with laughter, then give FlatSpin a whirl.” Yorkshire Post

“Absolute genius”

The Herald on Improbable Fiction Each play in this trilogy is an entirely separate, stand-alone story, featuring completely different characters. Uniquely, however, all three plays share the same actors - and the same set! Please note that this play contains occasional strong language

RolePlay by Alan Ayckbourn

“We could both have got typhoid, you know. That’s the trouble with eating by candlelight all the time. You never notice the state of the cutlery.” Whilst a storm gathers force outside their Docklands apartment, the newlyengaged Justin and Julie-Ann — they’re in IT, you know — are preparing for a very special dinner. It’s time to get to know the respective parents and on an occasion like this, everything has to be just right. Only there’s a pudding fork missing. And a woman has just fallen onto their balcony . . . The new arrival - who has quite literally dropped in from the flat above – is former lapdancer Paige Petite, on the run from her abusive, boxing promoter boyfriend. But Paige’s escape is short-lived . . . and it’s only moments before the shape of her menacing, none-too-sharp ‘bodyguard’, Micky Rale, fills the doorway . . .

No sooner have Justin and Julie-Ann discovered their unexpected guests, than Julie-Ann’s parents, Dee and Derek arrive (Derek’s big in garden centres in Doncaster, by the way). And hot on their heels – and all the way from Godalming – comes Justin’s flamboyant mother, Arabella, who appears to be . . . well, several drinks ahead of everyone else . . . A wickedly funny and sometimes poignant story of love, lust and the hazards of dinner parties, the third part of the Damsels In Distress trilogy is classic Ayckbourn. If you enjoyed PFT’s hugely popular A Chorus Of Disapproval in 2013, you won’t want to miss this!

“This is Ayckbourn in great form, funny, subtle and satisfying.” The Times

“. . . magisterial cunning . . . the writing is as funny, nimble and lethally observed as ever.” The Sunday Times

The Scotsman on A Chorus Of Disapproval Each play in this trilogy is an entirely separate, stand-alone story, featuring completely different characters. Uniquely, however, all three plays share the same actors - and the same set! Please note that this play contains occasional strong language

This Happy Breed by Noël Coward

“ . . . it’s up to us ordinary people to keep things steady. That’s your job, my son, and just you remember it.” 1919: almost unscathed from his time in the trenches, Frank Gibbons returns to civilian life, starts a new job in a travel agency and moves his wife, Ethel, their three children, Reg, Vi and Queenie, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Flint, into a new home near Clapham Common. On the day of the move to Number 17 Sycamore Road, Frank is delighted to discover that their nearest neighbour is Bob Mitchell, an old comrade-in-arms whom he had given up for dead in 1915. With the Mitchells – Bob, his wife Nora, and son Billy - living cheek by jowl with the Gibbonses, the two families adapt to life in suburbia - and to peacetime. Over the next 20 years, as their parents slip into middle-age, the children grow up

and become the next generation, subject to all the usual trials and tribulations: political awakenings, doomed romances, tragic accidents, unexpected weddings, and shameful elopements, the human face of the two momentous decades between the wars stretching from the coming of the Jazz Age, the General Strike and the depression, to the rise of fascism, appeasement and Munich. Written in the spring of 1939, but rarely seen on the stage after David Lean’s magnificent film version was released in 1944, Coward’s saga of the lives and loves of one lower-middle-class family and their friends during a turbulent period of history is warm-hearted, funny, deeply moving and infused with a love of Britain and its people.

“ . . . gripping, good-hearted play” The Telegraph

“The play is an exquisitely rendered slice of suburban life that Coward subtly spins into a web of neighbourly and family relations.” The Daily Mail

Hard Times

by Charles Dickens adapted for the stage by Stephen Jeffreys “Now, what I want is, facts. Facts alone are what is wanted in life. Plant nothing else in your mind and root out everything else.” Lancashire, the 1840s: when her father, a circus performer, mysteriously disappears, young Sissy Jupe is offered a place at Mr. Gradgrind’s school – and a job in Gradgrind’s household as a servant. Torn between two worlds, Sissy decides to leave the circus behind and start a new life. But in Gradgrind’s school - and home there is no place for imagination or play. Gradgrind worships only reason and logic. And Sissy and Gradgrind’s children, Louisa and Tom, are raised to distrust “fancy” and believe only in cold, hard fact . . . When she reaches adulthood, Louisa catches the eye of bombastic mill owner and self-made man, Josiah Bounderby. Gradgrind sees many advantages to an

alliance with a man of such wealth and influence. And much to Sissy’s disgust, the beautiful but passionless Louisa agrees to the match. Tom, however, is jealous of his sister’s apparent good fortune and longs for a similar life of wealth and ease. So when a wave of unrest sweeps the town, Tom seizes an opportunity to line his pockets – and ensure that someone far less fortunate than he takes the blame . . . A thrilling, moving and ultimately uplifting story of betrayal, sacrifice and redemption, Dickens’ great novel of the triumph of the imagination over the brutality of the new industrial age is brought vividly to life in Stephen Jeffreys’ magnificent adaptation.

“The strength of this version . . . is its preservation of the satiric vitality of Dickens’ original, and a real feel for the superb rhetoric of his prose.” Time Out

“ . . . captures the volume of suppressed anger in the text, a passion whose delicate control makes a thriller out of mawkishness.” The Independent

Dedicated to the hard-working staff and cast at PFT. You all do a wonderful job. Anne
