Wonderful Entertainment! October 2013 - April 2014
W
elcome to another packed Autumn-Winter-Spring programme at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, which we launch this year with Scotland’s best-loved comedy, The Steamie. After a ten year absence from the PFT stage, don’t miss your chance to reacquaint yourself with Magrit, Dolly, Doreen and Mrs. Culfeathers in this ever-popular PFT Classic!
Mànran
Pasadena Roof Orchestra
We are thrilled to announce that our festive musical this year will be an adaptation of the classic Christmas movie It’s A Wonderful Life. If last year’s awardwinning, 5 star production of White Christmas is anything to go by, this will be one of the highlights of Scotland’s festive Season. Expect nothing less than ‘sheer skill, brilliance and ambition’ (STV) - turn to the centre pages to find out more. What else? Well, there's Swan Lake performed by Ballet West, plus a host of outstanding tribute acts, including The Springsteen Sessions, Buddy Holly, Real Diamond and Definitive Bublé. And over in Faskally Woods, we're pleased to be supporting The Enchanted Forest, which returns with this year's light and sound spectacular, Absorb. PFT's very own Winter Words Festival (14–23 Feb) celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Expect a whole host of familiar faces and fascinating events spread over two weekends - tickets go on sale in early December.
Swan Lake
Then there are concerts from friends old and new: the wonderful Pasadena Roof Orchestra are back with Puttin’ On The Ritz; Dunfermline G&S Society return with Pirates Of Penzance; Julie Madly Deeply brings us the sound of music (ahem) in March; and the rousing, evocative sound of Mànran rounds off an enthralling, entertaining line-up. And don't forget the latest range of our everpopular Active Arts workshops in photography, painting and drawing, all lead by experienced tutors. Whatever the season - Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer - there’s always plenty of wonderful entertainment at PFT. And with a fantastic selection of places to stay and eat, as well as a huge variety of things to do, there’s never been a better time to take a relaxing break in the creative heart of Scotland. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Theatre in the Hills very soon. John Durnin Chief Executive & Artistic Director

decade on from their last appearance at PFT, The Ladies are back . . .
It's Hogmanay. In that great Victorian institution, the steamie, four women set about getting their heavy loads of washing done in time for the bells. Amongst the heat and the suds, Mrs. Culfeathers, Dolly, Doreen and the irrepressible Magrit swap tales of menfolk, memories and mince, as they wring sheets dry over sinks and scrub the dirt from their husbands’ overalls with ferocity, dedication . . . and a wicked sense of humour.
As they gossip, laugh, sing and cry together - both hindered and helped by the steamie's ubiquitous handy man, Andy - the quartet conjure up a poignant, hilarious cameo of life in 1950s Glasgow, when community was everything. They're oor pals . . . your pals . . . a' body's pals . . . A smash-hit when last seen at PFT in 2003 - the third such production of Tony Roper's 1987 play to be staged at PFT - The Steamie remains an all-time favourite with Scottish audiences. As the nights draw in, this heart-warming, laugha-minute comedy is the perfect choice for this year's Autumn Classic!
“The play has a kind of hilarious perfection” The Scotsman Sponsored by Catherine Chorley in memory of Evelyn Campbell.

"An inspired stage production… astonishing production values" The Scotsman It's Christmas Eve. In upstate New York, in the small town of Bedford Falls, lights are twinkling and snow is falling. Yet for one man, the season of peace and goodwill brings only despair. Through no fault of his own, one of the good guys, George Bailey, someone who has given up his youthful dreams of escape and adventure in order to help his family, his friends and the citizens of Bedford Falls, faces ruin and disgrace. As George stands on the town bridge, staring into the icy waters and lamenting his wasted life, the people of Bedford Falls pray for
someone – anyone – to save George from himself. And as if by a miracle, somewhere far, far away, those prayers are heard. And an angel named Clarence is given the chance to earn his wings . . . Adapted from Frank Capra's classic Christmas film, this uplifting, bittersweet tale of small town life is one of the greatest festive stories ever told. If you enjoyed last year’s hugely successful production of White Christmas, then you can't afford to miss the Scottish première of Thomas M. Sharkey’s new musical!

The Springsteen Sessions
Join us for our annual celebration of the life, loves, poetry and song of Scotland’s honoured Bard, Robert Burns.
As far as tributes to The Boss go, there’s none finer . . .
with Pete Clark and Friends
Your evening will commence with a piped entrance into the Festival Restaurant for a traditional supper. Take your seat for a feast of warm, reekin’ rich Scottish fare, toasts to and by the Lassies and a glass or two of Aberfeldy amber. Moving into the atmospheric Foyer Bar, the entertainment continues with a unique rendition of Tam O’ Shanter, followed by a stunning performance of the best of Burns’ music and song from acclaimed local musicians Pete Clark, Gregor Lowrey and vocalist Kirsten Easdale.
Formed in 2010, this group of accomplished musicians re-create the unique and intense sound of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band in a blistering concert performance which will have you captivated from the opening chords. Straddling four decades of the very best hits from The Boss, you’ll hear Born To Run, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, Glory Days and Rosalita amongst many other songs (drawn from albums from Greetings from Asbury Park right through to Wrecking Ball) in this blistering two hour performance. A must for fans of The Boss (or the musically curious), a great night out is guaranteed!

2014 will mark the 10th Winter Words Festival at the Theatre in the Hills and we are looking forward to sharing the anniversary celebrations with our regular Winter Words audiences - and, hopefully, lots of new faces too! The first festival to appear each year on Scotland's literary calendar, Winter Words has grown into a unique and distinctive event, celebrating not just a feast of books, but all the other different ‘ways with words’ too: words written, words spoken, words read, words in verse, words in song, words in comedy, words in debate. The recurring festival themes have been Scotland's history, people and landscapes seen through many lenses, but stories of wilderness, of adventuring and of the natural world have also become firm fixtures. All of these themes have given rise to a wide spectrum of fascinating events: some have been delivered from the stage, some shared over lunch, some read aloud in the Café. We have had workshops for budding authors, book signings and meet the author sessions, bedtime stories by the fire and lots of lively discussions and Q & A sessions. Over the years, Winter Words has attracted a vast array of well-kent faces to the Pitlochry stage, Michael Palin, Neil Oliver, Sir Chris Bonington, Alistair Darling, Julia Donaldson, Gyles Brandreth, Brian Blessed, Sally Magnusson, James Naughtie, Nicholas Crane, Brian Rix, Elaine C. Smith, Tony Robinson, Michael Portillo and Joss Ackland amongst them.
And joining them at Winter Words have been a huge list of much loved writers and poets, from Louis de Bernieres, Kate Mosse, Janice Galloway, Maggie O’Farrell and Liz Lochhead to Ian Rankin, James Robertson, Stuart MacBride, Alasdair Gray and Christopher Brookmyre. 2014 will be a momentous year for Scotland and the excitement generated by the independence referendum, the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn, the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup will be reflected in the Winter Words programme. There will be history aplenty, with the centenary of the start of the First World World War commemorated and a focus on Early Peoples (watch out for tall blond men in horned helmets!), sitting alongside adventures, journeys and tales of sporting prowess – both past and current. Winter Words takes place over two weekends amidst some of the most picturesque surroundings Scotland can offer: the stunning vista of snow-capped hills all around guarantees that this will be a visit to Pitlochry you will not forget! Tickets will be on sale from early December. Make sure you are on our mailing list or visit our website to stay in touch with the latest developments and news.

Book and lyrics by Euan Martin and Dave Smith, music by James Bryce Somewhere in the Highlands, at the heart of a rolling glen, one of the last family-owned distilleries is in trouble. Big trouble . . .
the prize. And with their rivals, they descend upon the distillery to compete face-to-face in the planned auction.
Having inherited a mountain of debt from her father, Mary McGregor faces a stark choice. Either close the distillery - and threaten the livelihood of everyone in the village - or sell her one remaining asset: the very last bottle of an ancient, fabled malt whisky . . . The Glenigma!
But the soft Highland air has a strange effect on the visitors. And the beautiful, remote location offers other attractions besides The Glenigma. So perhaps it's not so surprising that when the battle for the bottle begins, things don't turn out quite as anyone expected . . .

Mànran
Definitive Bublé With the fabulous voice of Jason Porter
"Mànran are an exceptionally talented bunch of young guys that are taking the music world by storm with their high energy, stomping tunes and phenomenal Gaelic/ English songs" Donald Shaw, Celtic Connections
Mànran have rocketed to the top of the Scottish music scene in a remarkably short space of time, their powerful combination of Gaelic and English songs underpinned by a driving blend of accordion, fiddle, flute and a backline of drum and bass. Mànran’s sound is unique – they are the only band on the planet to host both Highland and Uilleann pipes in a single lineup – and it is this powerful, evocative combination that creates their signature sound . Mànran have two top producers on board: the legendary accordion player and musician Phil Cunningham and Calum Malcolm (Wet Wet Wet, Simple Minds and Runrig). No wonder they are already multi award-winning . . . With a brand new album due for release any moment, Mànran are a unique young band with the dexterity and drive to set themselves apart from other traditional bands today.

Interspersed with Bublé's own tunes, you'll be able to toe-tap along to many all-time swing classics.
