FIFTH THIRD BANK IS A PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE PITTSBURGH AIDS TASK FORCE 2014 ANNUAL BENEFIT A strong community creates a bond between us all. It fosters friendship, respect and well-being. And most importantly, we accomplish more together. No one understands this better than we do. That’s why we’re proud to support the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force 2014 Annual Benefit.

Fifth Third Bank. Member FDIC.

I am honored to welcome you to the 28th Annual Benefit for Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force. On behalf of the Board and Staff of PATF, I want to express our sincere thanks to you for joining us tonight. Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force’s Annual Benefit is our signature fundraiser. The funds raised each year enable us to provide vital support to those living with HIV, as well as the prevention, outreach, education, and testing services that prevent the transmission of the virus. These are lean times where funding dollars are being stretched because more agencies are competing for funds. All of the Board and Staff at PATF are grateful for our family of supporters who are so loyal and generous in giving to the mission of PATF. We are especially thankful this year to our top sponsors Giant Eagle Inc, Fifth Third Bank, and UPMC. A very special thank you is in order for this year’s Chairs David Bush and Tim McVay. who have been so gracious with their time and energy. The Host Committee this year went above and beyond to give their time and resources so that expenses of this event could be underwritten. Thank you all. Every year PATF pays tribute to our founder Kerry Stoner by bestowing an award that bears his name to an individual, organization, or business that has shown outstanding support to PATF’s Annual Benefit. This year, we are pleased to honor Giant Eagle, Inc. with the prestigious Kerry Stoner Award. Giant Eagle has not only provided a high level of support for the PATF food pantry, which serves a significant number of people living with HIV, but also has supported the PATF Annual Benefit for over twenty years. Our hats are off to the Giant Eagle family of employees and administrators who support our mission so generously. For 28 years now PATF has struggled long and hard to blaze a trail of caring and respect through the muddy waters of stigma and prejudice in our region. We honor those who dedicate so much time and talent to provide a better quality of life to those living with HIV as well as preventing the spread of the disease. Through all this effort we are moving closer to making new infections of HIV rare. Our motto and our guiding wisdom is HIV – FIND IT, TREAT IT, BEAT IT! I hope you will join me this evening in raising a glass to PATF and to the Pittsburgh community that supports our work. Cheers! Charles Christen, DrPH, MEd Executive Director

Thank you for joining us tonight for the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force 28th Annual Benefit. We’re honored to be here in support and celebration of the important work of PATF, and hope you enjoy the magical music of The Johnny Rodgers Band in the glorious Twentieth Century Club! PATF has been an integral part of the Pittsburgh community for 28 years and tonight we come together to celebrate and support their mission. Since 1985, PATF has been fighting to prevent the spread of HIV in southwestern Pennsylvania and to support those who are living with the virus. This mission is impossible without support from people like you. Congratulations to Giant Eagle, recipient of this year’s Kerry Stoner Award, and special thanks to our friend and Creative Chair, Bill Chisnell. Most importantly, we thank each of you for your generosity, friendship, and love, today and always! XOXO

JOHNNY RODGERS BAND was formed in 2003 to bring musical depth to new, original songs – and to take old songs and make them new. The band provides a guided musical tour of Americana pop and are masters of styles ranging from blues, soul, country and jazz, to the piano-driven energy of rock and roll. They cultivate connections with audiences through performance, discussion, demonstration, and exchange. Johnny Rodgers Band has performed and recorded with artists such as Liza Minnelli, Michael Feinstein, Randy Brecker, and Tom Harrell among others. They have been featured on recordings that celebrate composers Maury Yeston and Jule Styne. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) selected the Johnny Rodgers Band to interpret and perform the music of Billy Joel in a command performance for the “Piano Man” himself at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. JOHNNY RODGERS (vocals and piano) is an internationally-celebrated singer songwriter, pianist, Broadway star, and recording artist who is described by Stephen Holden, from THE NEW YORK TIMES, as an entertainer “that can’t be found anywhere else” with “fused elements of Billy Joel, Peter Allen and Johnny Mercer.” Liza Minnelli recognized Johnny’s talent taking him on her world tour and then as featured singer, dancer, pianist, and songwriter in the Tony Award-winning Liza’s At The Palace. BRIAN GLASSMAN (bass and percussion) is known as one of the best upright and electric bassists in New York. While his style includes classical, rock, Latin, R&B, and cabaret, Glassman is perhaps best-known for his work in jazz and Jewish music styles, such as klezmer. DANNY MALLON (drums, percussion, vocals), a native New Yorker, performs American roots music inspired by the classic songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s, as combined with the musical strains of New York’s cultural melting pot. Mallon has been featured on numerous recordings, on radio, television, and in film, as well as with luminaries such as Randy Brecker, Gene Bertoncini, and Phoebe Snow. JOE RAVO (guitar), a New York native, is a multi-faceted guitarist and composer who has performed with jazz greats such as Dave Brubeck, Stanley Turrentine, and Gerry Mulligan. With guitar techniques incorporating a diverse set of traditions, Ravo’s style embodies the multi-cultural flavor teeming throughout New York City. Ravo studied guitar with Alexander Bellow and he has been on the faculty of Mannes College of Music since 1978. SCOTT NADELSON (trumpet), founder of C Street Brass, teaches at a private studio based in Pittsburgh, as well as working as teaching artist of the Pittsburgh Symphony. He is pursuing a Masters Degree from Carnegie Mellon University under the tutelage of George Vosburgh and Neal Berntsen of the Pittsburgh Symphony. An alumnus of the Peabody Conservatory, Scott was mentored by international soloist Joe Burgstaller and former Baltimore Symphony trumpet, Edward Hoffman. While at Peabody, Scott was principal trumpet with the Peabody Concert Orchestra and lead trumpet with the Jazz Orchestra.

The University of Pittsburgh Honors College Quartet has had its current musicians since 2011. The members are Olivia Jackson and Jennifer Hess on violin, guest artist Roger Zahab on viola, and Eric Gratta on cello. Olivia is a junior bioengineer major on the pre-dental track. Jennifer is a junior ecology and evolution major. Mr. Zahab is the director of the orchestra and senior lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh, and is a core faculty for the MFA in music composition program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Eric is a junior computer science and music double major. They have played together for several events at the University of Pittsburgh campus, as well as the greater Pittsburgh area.

Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF) was formed in 1985 by a dedicated group of volunteers, answering a cry from those infected with HIV/AIDS for compassion, supportive services, and information about the disease. In its infancy, PATF offered the Legal Assistance program as well as emotional and practical support to those who were dying from AIDS through what became known as the Buddy Program. Now in its 29th year of service, PATF has evolved from an agency that helped people with AIDS to die with dignity into an agency that helps people with HIV/AIDS live healthier, more productive lives. PATF is the oldest and largest AIDS service organization in southwestern Pennsylvania and currently serves clients in Allegheny and ten surrounding counties, provides services to more than 500 individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS and delivers targeted prevention, outreach, and education programs to more than 14,000 individuals each year.
