PITTSBURGH AIDS TASK FORCE

ANNUAL REPORT

2013 - 2014

Dear friends, It is with great pride that I introduce the 2013-2014 Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force Annual Report, Focus on the Positive. I am so very grateful to the many individuals and organizations which, generously and with great compassion, support the work of PATF. It would not be possible to serve the large number of clients and general public without your support. This year has been a positive one for PATF and those we serve. I am proud to list some of our accomplishments here: • • • • • • • •

Client Services staff formed a young mothers’ support group. The food pantry distributed 8,000 bags of groceries this past year. PATF hosted the largest and best attended East End Community Health Fair to date. HIV and Hepatitis testing has been consistently administered through a collaboration with Prevention Point Pittsburgh, the local needle exchange program. The M2M project continues to focus on young black men who have sex with men through our 1st Wednesday’s monthly meetings. The Girl Talk program significantly increased its outreach to young girls of color. We provided education and community outreach to over 15,000 individuals We made a positive impact in our community through our involvement with the City of Pittsburgh HIV Commission, the Regional HIV Collaborative, ALPHA Pittsburgh, and advocacy groups in Philadelphia, Washington D.C.

The important work of PATF lives on with your support and the support of so many. Thank you again. Sincerely,

Charles L. Christen, DrPH, MEd PATF Executive Director

Dear friends, Another year has passed in our fight against HIV/AIDS. There is no doubt that the HIV/ AIDS epidemic continues to change the lives of thousands across Southwestern Pennsylvania, yet the challenge to help those affected by HIV and AIDS remains relentless. I am so grateful that you share PATF’s mission to support and meet the many needs our clients have due to this disease. And with your patronage, we have built PATF as one of the most comprehensive systems of social services for people living with HIV and AIDS in our region. Thankfully, our staff, volunteers, donors, and clients continue to take action and achieve results in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Together we can do amazing things to positively impact the lives of our clients – allowing them to regain their health, defeat stigma and isolation and build the courage to maintain meaningful lives. I remain both grateful and humbled by your support of PATF and how this translates to the numerous programs and services that mean so much, not only to our clients, but for all those we serve in our community. Together we can be proud that we have, and will continue, our commitment to fight HIV and AIDS. Sincerely,

Bart Rauluk PATF Board President

Values In the tradition of PATF’s caring founders, we will continue to employ these ethics and values: Compassion, Confidentiality, Courtesy, Dignity, Excellence, Integrity, and Respect for Diversity.

Vision PATF will continue as the premier, community-based HIV/AIDS service organization in southwestern Pennsylvania. We empower people living with HIV/AIDS to live their lives to the fullest as valued, respected, and participating members of the community. We are committed to stopping the spread of HIV infections.

Mission Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force is dedicated to supporting and empowering all individuals living with HIV/AIDS and preventing the spread of infection.

184 participants attended 24 parties focusing on increasing knowledge of HIV/STD prevention and

testing. 54 girls 13-18-years-old were tested for HIV, Chlamydia, and Gonnorhea.

The program provided HIV positive individuals in need with the opportunity to receive help accessing medical care and social services before becoming a full-fledged client of the agency. For the past two years, the program has brought over 100 people back into the care system and kept them in

Treatment is Prevention! PATF affirmed its belief in treatment as prevention by combining its outreach and prevention teams under the direction of PATF’s executive director. This combined team focuses on finding those infected with HIV through education and testing intitiatives and getting them the care they need. With the addition of Rev. Karen Battle as outreach coordinator along with Vianca Masucci, our yearly Americorps service member, we focused on educating the community and bringing testing initiatives to a wide range of community members as well as strengthening our revised Buddy Program. The Buddy Program, a volunteer driven initiative, provides companionship and

Snodgrass and Goddpasture have been Buddies since September 2013 and each serve one client each so far with emotional support, companionship, and occasional assistance with light homemaking needs. PATF Buddy Program volunteers offer support to family care givers by assisting with many of the concerns of an HIV-positive person, but most significantly help by being willing to listen.

During the last half of the fiscal year, client services staff processed nearly 500 re-certifications for Ryan White funding, completed 62 new intakes and 51 re-intakes, and enrolled 23 clients in our pharmacy program. PATF’s pharmacy program is contractually managed by Coordinated Care Network and features home delivery of medications that greatly benefits those without transportation, severe health issues, and those affected by the stigma of being HIV positive. PATF receives a percentage of the profits from our clients who enroll in our pharmacy program. Thanks to an enrollment push by our medical case managers, PATF recorded its largest pharmacy revenue to date.

A Year of Change and Challenge Client services saw a year of change as Maria C. Philips, a former Medical Case Manager at PATF, was promoted to Director of Client Services. Nicole Baer, a former Medical Case Manager and Housing Coordinator at PATF, was transitioned to Rural Medical Case Manager for the northern counties in the 11-county region served by PATF, and we welcomed three new medical case Director of Client Services managers: Gregg Maria C. Philips Higgins, Shakira O’Neil, and TeOnna Ross. Staff took the initiative throughout the year to create new support groups for women and young mothers and develop a new mileage reimbursement process, while the department as a whole forged new partnerships to benefit our clients and community. Staff began working with Children’s Hospital to provide medical case management to HIV positive children aging out of their system as well as working with

rural health departments in identifying HIV positive individuals in need of care. PATF began a new program called the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), a federally funded nutrition program for senior citizens which provides a monthly box of nutritious USDA foods. Also known as the Senior Box Program, CSFP works to improve the health of people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious foods. Eligible clients received this monthly box in addition to their monthly pantry visit. This program will ensure consistent nutrition for our senior clients year round. As our client base has grown, staff excelled at meeting new challenges. Our focus on medical case management has kept more of our clients in a doctor’s care, resulting in less virus in their body which makes it harder to infect others. Our focus on the positive has helped our clients live happier, healthier lives.

TeOnna Ross (left), Shakira O’Neil, and Gregg Higgins joined the client services team in fiscal year 2013-2014 and hit the ground running with over 80 clients each living in Allegheny County.

PATF unveiled its newly re-designed Kerry Stoner Award. The re-design idea started when Richard Parsakian brought together many of Kerry Stoner’s friends and those passionate about his legacy to talk about how best to represent Stoner while honoring the contributions of the award recipients. Nachum Golan, Steve Hough, Wes Scott, Mary Irwin Scott, Linda Bucci, Tom Sokolowski, Gordon Fisher, Elliott Oshry, and Dee Jay Oshry came together to remember their friend and imagine a new way to honor his legacy.

Major sponsors of PATF’s 28th Annual Benefit were Fifth Third Band, Giant Eagle, Inc., UPMC, American Eagle, BNY Mellon, Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS, Cindy & Murry Gerber, MARC USA, and Vivian & Bill Benter.

Chairs David Bush and Tim McVay hosted the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force 28th Annual Benefit at the Twentieth Century Club on March 27, 2014 at the Twentieth Century Club. The event was the most successful benefit in PATF history, raising $155,120 and attracting over 400 attendees.

The gorgeously re-imagined Kerry Stoner Award, designed by Richard Parsakian, was accepted by Jeremy Shapira on behalf of Giant Eagle, Inc. A group of past award recipients gathered on stage to symbolically pass the wand, hand to hand, to the newest awardee.

The featured entertainer was Johnny Rodgers and his band, who dazzled guests with a cabaret-style performance of classics and new favorites. VIP guests enjoyed an intimate pre-performance reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a special string quartet performance and meet and greet with Johnny Rodgers. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, deserts, a performance by the featured entertainer, and a night of mingling with old and new friends of PATF amongst casino tables, prize drawings, and an award presentation.

As a bonus, Giant Eagle was also awarded an official citation from the office of Representative Dan Frankel recognizing their ongoing contributions to Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force and dedication to community service.

We were honored to present PATF’s signature award, the Kerry Stoner Award, to Giant Eagle, Inc. Giant Eagle has been a long-time supporter of PATF’s Annual Benefit and food pantry program, providing nutritious food and toiletries for our clients and their families.

Facilitated by Richard Parsakian, the award was created by glass artist Melissa Fitzgerald while the base was Richard Parsakian created by Travis Rohrbaugh, both of the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Kathleen Mulcahy, Ron Desmett, Heather McElwee, and Paige Ilkhanipour of the Pittsburgh Glass Center were all instrumental in the creation of the award.

PATF welcomed two new board members, Dr. Ken Ho (L) and Joseph Foster (R), at our Annual Meeting on May 19.

National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day

Allegheny Health Network and the Positive Health Clinic presented the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force 4th Annual East End Community Health Fair on Friday, June 27th. The community and local vendors turned out to make this the most successful health fair yet in commemoration of National HIV Testing Day!

PATF hosted a press conference with Rep. Jake Wheatley at the PATF offices in East Liberty in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Feb 7. Rep. Wheatley announced the passage of a House Resolution recognizing February 7 as “National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania and, along with a panel of representatives from regional HIV/ AIDS agencies and state government, discussed the continuing health disparities facing the Black community and what we are doing to address those disparities. Rep. Wheatley took advantage of his time at our offices by getting a free 20 minute HIV test, setting an example for others.

Hundreds of people took advantage of free health screenings and information, games, music, free giveaways, and a food truck round up. PATF administered approximately 34 HIV tests, 10 HEP C tests, over 20 STD tests and reached hundreds of people with HIV/STD prevention messages. PATF’s HIV Prevention Specialist Alan Jones (L) with State Rep. Jake Wheatley (R).

In honor of World AIDS Day, PATF partnered with True T Entertainment to hold Pittsburgh’s official Honors Ball, The Galaxy Ball. The event drew about 250 people to the Warhol on Dec 7th, 2013, as participants from as far away as Florida competed for awards, honors, and prizes. If you’ve never experienced a house ball event, they are a feast for the senses. The ballroom community is an underground LGBT subculture where people group into “houses” and come together in positive competitions based around fashion, dancing, music, and attitude. Typically made up of younger black male gay, bisexual, and transsexual individuals, the house ball scene offers a safe space for self expression and a strong sense of community for marginalized minorities. PATF offered testing and prevention messaging during the event. Through events like these and our M2M Project, PATF successfully met its commitment to provide services, resources, and safe spaces for this rapidly growing population of African American LGBT youth in a time where, nationally, men aged 13-24 who have sex with men are becoming infected with HIV at a rate of approximately 1,000 per month.
