T

hank you very much for joining us for Pittburgh AIDS Task Force’s 29th Annual Benefit at J. Verno Studios. Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force is near and dear to our hearts, and to be part of this glorious evening is a privilege and honor.

This year’s benefit combined the talent, creativity, hard work, and generosity of many people, and we are grateful for each and every one of you. Particular thanks and praise go to Giant Eagle for being our lead sponsor. We are very excited to have food prepared and Barbara Richey Chait (R) and Clare Meehan (L) demonstrated by Emmy-nominated Chef Bob Sendall. Also, many thanks to the multi-talented Tom Bedger and Jeff Pierce of Toadflax for their creative genius in making the atmosphere magical. We thank all of our sponsors for joining us in support of Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force in the fight to end HIV/AIDS. We are confident that with the continued support of our community, a world free of HIV and AIDS is within reach. Many congratulations to Stuart Fisk for receiving the most prestigious Kerry Stoner Award. Welcome from the Executive Director

I

am honored to welcome you to the 29th Annual Benefit for Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force. On behalf of the board and staff of PATF, I want to express our sincere thanks to you for joining us tonight.

benefit such a success.

I want to express a heartfelt thank you to our co-chairs Barbara Richey Chait and Clare Meehan. These two women have been a delight to work with and strong advocates and supporters of the work of PATF. Their personal commitment to this event has been extraordinary. I also want to thank Jay Verno for the use of this lovely space and Toadflax for adding such lovely ambience. A special thank you to our corporate and individual sponsors, each of you have contributed so much to make this

This annual fundraising event for the work of PATF is our most significant way to raise revenue to fund programs and to meet the special needs of our clients that are not covered by other funding sources. The funds raised each year enable us to provide vital support to those living with HIV, as well as prevention, outreach, education and testing services that prevent the transmission of the virus. We are grateful for each and every one of you, our family of supporters, who are so loyal and generous in giving to the mission of PATF. We are especially thankful this year to our premier sponsor, Giant Eagle. On this special night, PATF pays tribute to our founder Kerry Stoner by way of bestowing an award that bears his name to an individual, organization, or business that has done much to support the mission of PATF. This year, we are pleased to honor Stuart Fisk. Stuart has been a driving force in the region serving HIV+ individuals through his help in founding the Positive Health Clinic at Allegheny General Hospital and his work advocating and assisting in the creation of the local needle exchange program, Prevention Point Pittsburgh. He has also proved himself a constant resource, trainer, and advisor to the PATF board and staff. For 30 years now many have struggled long and hard to blaze a trail of caring and respect through the muddy waters of stigma and prejudice. We honor those who dedicate so much time and talent to provide a better quality of life to those living with HIV as well as preventing the spread of the disease. Through all this effort we are moving closer to making new infections of HIV rare. Our motto this year has been to FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE – this hopeful attitude supports all of us in not giving up the struggle as we are closer than ever to ending AIDS and HIV as an epidemic. Thank you again for supporting the great work of PATF. I hope this evening will be a relaxing and fun experience for you! Sincerely,

Charles Christen, DrPH, MEd

. g n i h t r Ou Being good neighbors.

How does a localized area become a genuine community? It takes good people doing great things. Not just for themselves but also for their neighbors. It’s mentoring those who need guidance. It’s opening new businesses with quality products at fair prices. It’s teachers who care. It’s art that enriches the mind; theater that thrills the soul. It’s playing together, working together, and watching our kids grow up together. And as we perform these daily rituals, strangers become friends. History of PATF Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF) was formed in 1985 by a dedicated group of volunteers, answering a cry from those infected with HIV/AIDS for compassion, supportive services, and information about the disease. In its infancy, PATF offered the Legal Assistance program as well as emotional and practical support to those who were dying from AIDS through what became known as the Buddy Program. Now in its 29th year of service, PATF has evolved from an agency that helped people with AIDS to die with dignity into an agency that helps people with HIV/AIDS live healthier, more productive lives. PATF is the oldest and largest AIDS service organization in southwestern Pennsylvania and currently serves clients in Allegheny and ten surrounding counties, provides services to more than 500 individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS and delivers targeted prevention, outreach, and education programs to more than 14,000 individuals each year.
