A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Friends,
We are absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with such talented and dedicated young artists this summer. Your child’s hard work and training will undoubtedly shine brightly in their performances, showcasing the incredible growth they have achieved.
We are grateful you chose PMT Conservatory for your child’s performing arts education. Our program goes beyond teaching performance skills; it also provides transferable life skills that are essential for our students’ futures. We hope you thoroughly enjoy the performances and consider continuing your child’s performing arts education with us in the fall semester. The stage opportunities we offer provide a crucial framework for their growth and development, enhancing their communication skills and selfconfidence. PMT Conservatory creates a place of belonging that not only stokes passion and creativity but also teaches students discipline, compassion, empathy, humility, self-confidence, freedom of expression, and leadership.
Thank you for being a part of the PMT family. We look forward to seeing you in the upcoming semester!
Enjoy the show!
Colleen Doyno Executive Director Pittsburgh Musical Theater
YOUNG ARTIST PRODUCTION
What is a Young Artist Production?
The foundation of PMT’s mission is built on arts education, development, mentorship, and providing performance opportunities for young artists. Students at PMT Conservatory receive a truly unique experience to use their training in fully produced productions of their own in which they take on roles as performers and technical theater crew.
Whether a student wishes to pursue a career in the arts or another field, Young Artist Productions provide an opportunity for growth and building transferable life skills in our future leaders. Patrons attending Young Artist Productions will be a part of it all as they experience and enjoy the best of our region’s talented youth in professional-quality entertainment!
DiD you know you are sitting in a 110-year-olD former schoolhouse?
Originally built in 1915 as the St. James School, PMT’s very own Gargaro Theater is now Pittsburgh’s OffBroadway venue in the West End!

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SWEENEY TODD
“Musicals are, by nature, theatrical, meaning poetic, meaning having to move the audience’s imagination and create a suspension of disbelief, by which I mean there’s no fourth wall.” – Sondheim
In 2016, I directed the greatest musical of all time with an amazing group of students right here at Pittsburgh Musical Theater. To revisit a piece that has so much legend and lore behind it can bring a different set of challenges. Luckily, the Teens here at PMT are always up for the challenge!
The recent Broadway revival sparked interest and excitement in a new generation of young performers. Therefore, it is so special to help these kids bring this story to life. These students have learned so much during this process, and I can’t wait for you to see their amazing work.
I also learn a lot with every show I work on, mostly from observing from the perspective of a teenage performer. I always enjoy working with this age group, because I remember so vividly the excitement and anticipation of performing at that age. It is the time in my life where this artform brought me the most joy, and lit the fire that has allowed me to share my experiences to new generations.
Sweeney Todd is my favorite musical. I hope this production will make it yours. Enjoy…if you dare…

SETTING THE TONE
This summer, we at PMT selected shows from two very different time periods. The preteen production of The Drowsy Chaperone takes place in the 1920’s, and the teen production of Sweeney Todd takes place in late 18th century London.
After some interesting conversations with the Director and designers, it was decided to bring Sweeney into the 1930’s and 1940’s. This allowed us to design the set for both shows using an art deco motif. The students then set out to learn about what art deco architecture, props and themes looked like. They were asked to design a show of their choice that is built around these newly learned art deco concepts.
We are continually amazed and inspired by the work of our students here at PMT. We hope you will enjoy looking at the student’s excellent work!
