Media & Sponsor Guide

Join Us! Pittsburgh Pride is the centerpiece of a month-long celebration of the uniqueness and rich diversity of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. It is a time to remember the Stonewall Riots, which happened in New York City in 1969, and is generally recognized as the beginning of the movement in the quest for Human Rights. Locally, Pittsburgh Pride is led by the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh, a 501(c)(3) organization who is dedicated to improving the quality of life for and visibility of the members of our community. Pittsburgh Pride, the Delta Foundation’s largest event, is now a 10-day extravaganza on Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh that has grown from 2800 people in 2007 to over 35,000 in 2010 (according to City of Pittsburgh estimates).

In 2011, our 10-day event includes the following highlights:

• Friday, June 3

• Thursday, June 9

• Friday, June 10

• Saturday, June 11

• Sunday, June 12

We’re Going Green

We do it because…. ….it saves us money.

Reducing, reusing and recycling our waste lowers our waste collection and disposal bill for the event. These savings will increase as the cost of disposing of waste to landfill continues to rise.

….it conserves resources.

Energy and raw materials go into making the products that we consume every day. The potential for waste is highest in the world of special events where energy, materials and time are used to make an experience happen in a short period of time. Keeping those materials in the production cycle allows for those resources expended and collected during extraction and refinement to be conserved

…our sponsors and volunteers want it.

34,000

Many households now have access to recycling facilities and we promote a positive and responsible image to our event participants, vendors and volunteers by implementing recycling practices.

33,000 32,000 31,000 30,000 29,000 28,000 27,000

….it’s the Law.

According to Pennsylvania Act 101, the Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Act of 1988, mandated communities, including the City of Pittsburgh, are required to recycle, at a minimum: • aluminum cans • high-grade office paper • corrugated cardboard • leaf waste (if generated) We’ve taken it a step further and provide for collection and composting (or other beneficial use) of food waste.

We are pleased that Zero Waste Pittsburgh certified Pittsburgh Pride 2010 as a GOLD level event in the City of Pittsburgh. Pride in the Street and Pride Fest collected over 3.25 TONS of recyclables during our events resulting in a 75% diversion from the landfills. 30-40% is considered excellent. In addition, the

PrideMag is printed with soy ink on paper that was 30% postconsumer recycled content, was FSC certified, and was printed with 100% wind energy.

Attendance in Thousands

The Delta Foundation and Zero Waste Pittsburgh, a project of the Pennsylvania Resources Council, are committed to making Pittsburgh Pride a “zero waste” event.

“For years now I have heard the word ‘Wait!’ It rings in the ear of every Negro with a piercing familiarity. This ‘wait’ has almost always meant ‘never.’ We must come to see with the distinguished jurist of yesterday that ‘justice too long delayed is justice denied.’” –MLK

“Mothers, tell your children: be quick, you must be strong. Life is full of wonder, love is never wrong. Remember how they taught you, how much of it was fear. Refuse to hand it down– the legacy stops here.” –Melissa Etheridge “No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love. The only queer people are those who don’t love anybody.” –Rita Mae Brown “If God had wanted me otherwise, He would have created me otherwise.” –Johann von Goethe
