Bombardier completes initial flight-testing phase on the EcoJet research project
The EcoJet research project aims to develop and mature technologies to support a sustainable future for business aviation. The initial flight-testing phase uses a model of a blended-wing-body aircraft.
During EBACE 2023, Bombardier presented the progress made on its EcoJet research project, a research platform that aims to develop technologies with the goal of reducing aircraft emissions through a combination of advanced aerodynamics and propulsion enhancements. After several years of research, the organizationsuccessfullycompleted its first phase of testing with a small-scale model of a blended-wing-body aircraft, representing approximately 7% of a large business jet.
Bombardier is now building on the significant knowledge acquired to engage in a second phase of testing with a model twice as large, and which completed its first flight last year to pave the way for this next test campaign.

Bombardier’s team noted highly positive results during the design optimization loops and initial flight test campaign. Those include the deployment of a next-generationProduct Lifecycle Management (PLM) platform, the confirmation of a sixth-generationtransonic wing modeling capability, and the demonstration of a new aircraft control architecture. This research and technology project aims to reduce aircraft emissions by up to 50% through a combination of aerodynamic and propulsion enhancements. Renowned for its leading expertise and ingenuity, Bombardier created the EcoJet research project to develop and mature powerful technologies to leverage in future projects, as part of its firm commitment to a sustainable future for business aviation.

Bombardier published Environmental Product Declarations(EPD) for its Challenger3500, Global 5500, Global 6500 and Global 7500 aircraft. Bombardier is also using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), at a 30% blend, to cover the totality of its flight operations, utilizing the Book-and-Claim system. The initiative will create a significant gain by reducing the annual greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel used in Bombardier’s flight operations by approximately 25%.

TBM 960 Makes EBACE Debut
Launched at the 2022 SUN ’n FUN Aerospace Expo. The TBM 960 upgraded turboprop from Daher was designed to offer owners and operators a superior piloting experience, a high level of safety, and increased cabin comfort, as well as enhanced efficiency and sustainability.
Key features of the TBM 960 include the new PT6E-66XT turboprop engine – purpose-built by Pratt & Whitney Canada for this aircraft, and Hartzell Propeller’s five-blade composite propeller with the Raptor™ lightweight hub. Both the engine and propeller system are linked to the TBM 960’s dual-channel digital Engine and Propeller ElectronicControl System (EPECS).With the EPECS, the PT6E-66XT’s startup is fully automated after a single-switch activation. The cockpit’s power lever becomes an ethrottle, using a single forward position from takeoff to landing – with the EPECS optimizing powerplant performance throughout the flight envelope while reducing pilot workload by integrating all functions and protecting
P.180
the engine’s life.
The Hartzell propeller is fully integrated into the aircraft’s propulsion system. It is specificallydesigned to reduce overall weight and improve the TBM 960’s takeoff distance, climb, and cruise speed. Turning at 1,925 rpm during maximum power output, the propeller contributes to limiting noise and vibration. Its sound level during takeoff is just 76.4 decibels, meeting the most stringent international noise standards.
The TBM 960 retains safety features that have contributed to the commercial success of Daher’s previous high-end TBM version – the TBM 940. Notably, the G3000 integrated flight deck enables the TBM’s e-copilot® functions:icing protection system; flight envelope monitoring through the ElectronicStability and Protection (ESP) and the Under-speed Protection(USP) systems; the Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) function;as well as the game-changing HomeSafe™ emergency autoland system.
