endy, a single mother of three young children, lives at InnVision Shelter Network (IVSN), a nonprofit that provides shelter and services for homeless families. When the rent on Wendy’s onebedroom apartment unexpectedly increased 50%, she could no longer afford to pay the bills. She and her children stayed with friends for as long as possible, but eventually they became homeless. Wendy’s top priority is taking care of her children. At IVSN, her family is able to stay together in a transitional apartment at the shelter, equipped with a full kitchen. After long days of school and work, the young mother makes sure her family eats dinner together every night. “It’s difficult going through so much change,” shared Wendy. “There are a lot of compassionate, caring people here, but ultimately it’s up to us as a family to be there for each other. That’s why family dinners are so important—so my kids know I’ll always be there for them.” Cooking has long been one of Wendy’s favorite hobbies. Despite her struggle with homelessness, she is able to put healthy, delicious meals on the table, thanks to a partnership between IVSN and PJCC.
Wendy’s six-year old son adds tomatoes to the family dinner at the shelter managed by nonprofit InnVision Shelter Network.
I’m so grateful for organizations like IVSN and the PJCC that are ready to help when people need it.
The PJCC recently began donating fresh fruits and vegetables from their Justice Garden to the families at IVSN. This family-to-family partnership enables residents to give back, while providing freshly-grown foods for the kitchens at InnVision Shelter Network. “You never know when life might take an unexpected turn,” said Wendy. “I’m so grateful for organizations like IVSN and PJCC that are ready to help when people need it.”

Since the Justice Garden was planted in April 2013, our community has embraced Grow Justice: Fight Hunger, contributing in meaningful ways to fight hunger in San Mateo County. On monthly Garden Service Days, individuals and families of all ages are learning about gardening while tending to produce beds. On Wednesdays, farmers and vendors from the PJCC Farmers’ Market are contributing their excess perishable and prepared goods to our weekly delivery to InnVision Shelter Network. By practicing the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world) our community is literally sowing the seeds of justice for people in need. THE CASE OF THE MISSING MITZVAH, #614 BY KIMBERLY GORDON

ast summer, 150 Camp Keff campers, ages 5 – 10, created design elements integral to the vibrant and personal murals that now adorn the Preschool gate and Hamlin Garden wall. Know what else these amazing kids did? They wrote songs. Songs that were performed live in a family concert by JUNO-award-winning singer/songwriter Norman Foote. I love it when our youth programs offer a first-rate opportunity for children to experience cultural arts, and studies confirm the value. According to UCLA’s Imagination Project, Graduate School of

Education and Information Studies, and countless other reports and testimonials, involvement in the arts “fosters critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and innovation.” It also contributes to “a greater involvement in community service.” That’s without recounting the data on improved standardized test scores and confidence levels.
“One said her teacher has been sarcastic because she painted a blue snowman (every child’s painting was pinned to the wall except hers),” Johnstone writes. “The other girl had drawn trees up the sides of her paintings (like Paul Klee) and the teacher drew a ‘correct’ tree on top of hers. She remembered thinking, ‘I’ll never draw for you again.’”
Now this is a real “quality over quantity” situation. In the chapter titled Spontaneity of his inspirational and spot-on book IMPRO, Keith Johnstone recounts an experience he had when surveying students who claimed they “couldn’t” draw.
Unfortunately, I suspect that these anecdotes strike a chord with more of us than not. Moment of truth: As children, how many of you were instructed to lip sync in a recital because your singing was off-key? How many of you were publicly

ridiculed when your clapping was offrhythm or were told not to scribble, but to “draw inside the lines?” I’m raising my hand. According to a 2010 international survey of CEOs conducted by IBM, the number one most crucial skill for future success was creativity. The Torah contains 613 Mitzvot (commandments from God), but I’d like to put in a request for a 614th. Children are inherently creative—even the ones that say they aren’t. Fostering this creativity while it is still boundless is something I’d consider a mitzvah.
Children from the PJCC Treehouse program participate in painting the “benches” surrounding the palm trees in the Hamlin Garden as part of the “Grow Justice” mural project.
This is why I’m so excited to be working this year with Story Pirates, a non-profit whose core mission celebrates the words and ideas of young people. Headquartered in New York and Los Angeles, Story Pirates paid a visit to our Treehouse (afterschool program) students in November, where they led two inspiring story writing workshops. As you read these very words, the Story Pirates are busy originating musical sketches with our students’ stories as their source material. And the “Tony for Best Musical” based on a 2nd grader’s story goes to? You can decide for yourself when our students perform their sketches live from Hillbarn Theatre on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

three essential core moves One of the most common questions a Pilates instructor hears is, “What are the best exercises for strong abdominals?” Sneak these three simple but effective moves into every workout and you’ll soon find yourself by Monique Molino
sporting that coveted hard-core core.
Slow Single Bent Knee Stretch Moving slowly, begin on your back with hips and knees bent towards chest. Inhale. Hugging one knee, exhale and extend one leg in front of you approximately 45 degrees. Inhale as you fold it back in, then repeat on other side. Once you feel your abdominals supporting your back, bring in one leg as you extend the other. Repeat 10 – 20 times.
The Walking Plank This exercise simultaneously works your abdominals, back, chest, shoulders, and glutes. Start in a plank position with your torso aligned from ear to ankle. Squeeze your glutes together; do not tuck your hips under, but elongate the spine into neutral all the way through the tailbone. Slide the shoulders down, wrapping the shoulder outward. Keep your abdominals braced. Keeping a neutral spine, walk the hands forward, and then walk back. Repeat 5 – 10 times.
Moves
For additional core moves, visit pjcc.org/pilates
Like the Walking Plank, this requires healthy shoulders, wrists, and hands. Begin seated over one hip with knees bent, your top foot placed just in front of your bottom foot, ankles crossed. Your bent elbow will be right under your shoulder, with the forearm facing forward. Inhale to prepare. As you lift up on the exhale, shoulders depressed, squeeze the legs together into a side plank. Then, bending the knees, sink straight down onto the ground, with control, into the seated position. Avoid tilting the top shoulder in front or behind you by keeping the shoulders down, collarbones open (chest open and wide). Repeat 5-10 times on each side.

Using Politics to Change the Fabric of Society By Rabbi Lavey Derby
IN 2009, newsweek NAMED The 2014 North Peninsula Scholar-in-residence the “most influential and important rabbi in the country”
It
is commonplace to believe that Jewish wisdom places a premium on what is called Tikkun Olam, the repair or healing of the world. This is understood to mean that it is our duty as human beings to make the world a better place through acts of charity and kindness. Social justice has come to be thought of as acts of loving kindness. But ask Rabbi David Saperstein and you’ll get a different understanding. For Saperstein, the 2014 North Peninsula Jewish Community’s Scholarin-Residence, the core activity of social

justice is politics. Of course, it’s important to give charity and provide what we can for the poor, but the essential act of Tikkun Olam is engaging in political activity to make substantive changes in the fabric of society. To be effective in the arenas of economic, environmental, and food justice requires engaging in political action that fundamentally corrects the way we function in these areas. That’s exactly what Rabbi Saperstein has done for the past three decades as the Director and Counsel of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Under his direction, the Religious Action Center
has advocated with Congress and the Administration on a broad range of social justice issues, and has provided extensive legislative and programmatic materials to synagogues nationwide. The Washington Post described Rabbi Saperstein as the “quintessential religious lobbyist on Capitol Hill,” and in 2009 Newsweek selected him as “the most influential and important rabbi in the country.” The Wall Street Journal described him as “among the country’s most influential shapers of religious issues in national elections.”
© World Economic Forum
Rabbi Saperstein addresses the 2013 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.
As our community Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Saperstein will discuss the relationship of religion in general and Judaism in particular to political issues. He will address the roots of Jewish social justice, a Jewish view on “just war theory,” and the use and abuse of religion in American elections, among many other topics.
Rabbi Saperstein will be in residence from January 30 through February 12, 2014 and will present twelve lectures throughout the community. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from an expert about the relationship of Judaism to politics and social justice.
Saperstein has been described in a Washington Post profile as “the quintessential religious lobbyist on Capitol Hill.”

Wellness means different things to different people: for one, connecting with people was the missing ingredient. for another, a marathon was the impetus to get in shape.
Cecile Meneghelli Pays it Forward “Pay it forward” is the idiom used by PJCC member Cecile Meneghelli to phrase her membership at the PJCC. However, her outlook wasn’t always so benevolent. Cecile recalls her early days as a new member: walking directly to the back of each group exercise class and hiding out of embarrassment. Thankfully, she didn’t let her shyness deter her; she kept coming back. After taking a variety of classes and sparking wonderful relationships with
New World Opens with Exercise Ask Mike Loo why he comes to the PJCC and he’ll cite the supportive environment that makes exercising fun and enjoyable— surprising words from a man who once claimed to be too busy to exercise. But when Mike set his sights on the Disneyland Half Marathon, he realized he first needed to get in condition. And so he signed up with a personal trainer. Twelve months later, exercise is just one slice of the pie that Mike now credits to his improved overall wellness. Equally important was a change in diet, which included acquiring a basic knowledge of nutrition. By implementing his newfound

knowledge, Mike not only lost 30 pounds, but also found that his healthier eating fueled workouts that were longer and of higher intensity. As a result, the man who was once “too busy to exercise” now finds himself in the best shape of his life. Better yet, he’s discovering a whole new world that entwines fitness with fun. “Now that I am in better physical condition, doing outdoor activities such as road biking and running have become entertaining activities,” Mike says. “I don’t just perceive them as exercise, but as social activities that I’m now capable of participating in and enjoying.”
others, Cecile has blossomed with confidence. Now, she “shakes her hips” in the front row of each Zumba® class she attends. And, most importantly, through her own experiences as the “new kid on the block,” she welcomes fresh faces in class and warmly introduces them to the PJCC family. While she has made tremendous progress with her own physical health, in her opinion the most important gift is enhancing the feeling of community and inspiring others to do the same.

Savory Dishes with Winter Produce By Jeannie Solomon Creamy Polenta Topped with Cinnamon Spiced Roasted Cauliflower Cauliflower is low in fat, low in carbohydrates but high in fiber and vitamin C. Cinnamon not only adds a touch of flavor, but has been shown to possibly improve blood sugar levels. Serves 4 1 head of cauliflower cut into medium to large florets
Use creative techniques to make nutrientdense winter produce a welcome addition to your menu. For example, root vegetables, including parsnips and turnips, can become a sweet and interesting addition alongside their more popular cousin, the carrot. Pair roasted cauliflower with creamy polenta and a pinch of cinnamon to make a homey and nutritious comfort dish. A medley of roasted root vegetables makes the perfect bed for poached eggs, and brighten up a hearty kale salad with ruby red grapefruit and avocado. In winter, there’s no better time to stay inside, cook, and enjoy the nutritious and tasty results! Share your favorite recipes with us. Email them to editor@pjcc.org.
2 1/2 cups vegetable broth, or reduced-sodium chicken broth
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup water
½ teaspoon cumin
3/4 cup stone ground polenta or cornmeal
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese, preferably Parmigiano-Reggiano, additional to taste
1 teaspoon salt pepper to taste Cauliflower
Polenta
1. Preheat oven to 500°F. 2. Removing florets from the cauliflower head: cut off the outer leaves, and with the head upside down, cut off the individual stems of florets from the center core. Break or cut florets into medium to large pieces. 3. Toss cauliflower in a large bowl with oil, cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper. Spread on a baking sheet. 4. Roast, stirring once, until tender and browned in spots, 25 to 30 minutes.
1. Combine broth and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. Slowly whisk in cornmeal and 1 tsp. of salt. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until very thick and creamy, 10 to 15 minutes. 2. Stir in cheese; remove the polenta from the heat. Serve the vegetables over the polenta. Note: If you end up with lumps of polenta, use a handheld mixer or immersion blender after you remove polenta from the heat.
