A political trial tells us a great deal about a country’s history. It also helps shape its future. Exploring these trials will help us to understand French, Russian and American history. The PJCC’s Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Stephen Berk, is Professor of Holocaust and Jewish Studies at Union College in Schenectady NY and a well known lecturer. Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont

The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Mirvis

November 28 • Code: 30809

November 29 10:30 am – 12:00 pm Classroom C • Free M / $4 P* Code: 30803

The recently widowed Mrs. Palfrey moves into a hotel while she waits—and waits—for her grandson to return her calls after she relocates to London to be closer to him. Mrs. Palfrey is about to give up on her family when a fateful fall introduces her to a kind, young writer, who—improbably—becomes her closest friend in this engaging drama. (108 min.)

Narrated from the collective perspective of a synagogue’s Ladies’ Auxiliary, Mirvis’ inspired debut depicts the perceived threat that the arrival of freespirited Batsheva poses to the insular Orthodox community of Memphis, Tennessee. The intergenerational conflict that ensues illuminates the difficulty of maintaining tradition while honoring personal freedom.

Calendar Girls December 12 Code: 30810 When one of the women in an English women’s group learns her husband has cancer, the group decides to spice up their yearly calendar fundraiser by forgoing the usual images of the Yorkshire dales and gracing the pages in the nude. Helen Mirren co-stars. (108 min.)

Meditation is one of the most natural and rewarding of all human activities. It is an effective technique for stress reduction. It brings balance, rest and a growing inner peace, and contributes to physical, emotional and mental well- being. Meditation can also give us direct, intuitive experience of higher realities. Drawing on the experience of mindfulness and on insights of the Jewish spiritual path, we will give ourselves the gift of wellness through meditation. This class is open to all, Jews and non-Jews alike, and includes simple and basic instructions in the practice of meditation. No class 11/24,12/22, 12/29.

TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations. Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of our species. Departures Returns 2:10 pm 2:30 pm 2:45 pm 2:50 pm 3:00 pm
