for Jewish Life & Culture. The PJCC is supported by the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.

Start by marking your calendars for May 1. That’s when families will Rock the Block at our first Family Fun Run and Fitness After-Party co-sponsored with Kaiser Permanente. Come rain or shine, the afternoon event will include participant medals for all registered kids and wrap up with an elaborate celebratory after-party at the Center. If your teen enjoys hitting the dance floor and hanging with their “fams,” tell them about the PJCC’s April 16 Faux Formal. They’ll be sure to describe it as “on fleek,” which is teen speak for “very good” (for more “teen talk” translations see page 6). Spring holidays are off to a sweet start with our mouthwatering Chocolate Passover Seder for families on April 17. All ages will also enjoy commemorating Israel’s 68th year of independence on May 12 with the Center’s Yom Ha’Atzmaut Celebration. The afternoon includes arts and crafts for kids, traditional Israeli treats, and a fascinating presentation of Israeli life by New York photographer Paul Margolis (enjoy samplings on pages 14 – 15). And join the North Peninsula Jewish Community for our communitywide Lag B’Omer Celebration on May 26: an exhilarating evening of live music, a kosher BBQ dinner, crafts, sports and games and—of course—the traditional serving of S’mores. Last, but certainly not least, we invite you to spend June 21, the summer solstice and longest day of the year, with Girls in Trouble. The free indie-folk concert (page 21) features Alicia Jo Rabins and is a riveting tribute to the complicated and little-known lives of Biblical women. So are you excited for spring? We sure are and look forward to welcoming you at the Center.

THE ELEMENTS OF

WELLNESS Embrace these key basics for optimum health and wellness. Start where you are or add one or more elements to your current routine. Stay consistent and you will reap the benefits!

HOW

WHEN

WHY

WORK YOUR HEART

WORK YOUR CORE

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend daily cardio training to maintain a strong cardiovascular system.

If you’re out of shape, your muscles may be stiff or tighter on one side than the other. You need to restore balance before adding too much stress; otherwise you risk muscle pulls, tears, or other injuries.

Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability. Most sports and other physical activities depend on stable core muscles.

Stronger muscles make you better at everything: lifting, walking up stairs, cleaning, sports—and building muscle will burn more calories to help you control body fat.

Good nutrition is vital to good health— especially after exercise. To avoid post-workout jitters, eat the right foods after exercise to keep your metabolism humming and the good energy flowing.

Sleep plays a vital role in good health and helps protect you mentally and physically. Sleep deficiency can raise your risk for chronic health problems and also affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others.

30 minutes daily.

Stretch your upper and lower body before beginning intense exercise.

Practice core exercises at least three to five times per week.

Two to three times per week with free weights or machines.

After working out.

At least 7 – 8 hours every night.

Walking • It can be done anywhere. • Low-impact, carries little risk of injury. • Aim for 10,000 steps per day.

Shoulder Back Stretch • Stand with both feet firmly planted about hip width apart. • Reach your arms up over your head. • Grab your right wrist and, pulling the right arm, lean to the left. You should feel a stretch all along your right side and in your arm. • Repeat on left side.

Beginner • Lie on back with neck support. • Lift both knees into the air. • Slowly bring one heel down to tap. • Alternate for one minute.

• Introduce strength training at least two to three times per week.

Eat foods that include a 4:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio:

• Get regular exercise.

Marching with High Knees • Stand with your arms in front of your body. • March forward bringing your knees up high to touch your hands.

Side-to-Side Basketball Defender • Stand with your palms open. • Squat down, keeping your chest and head high. • Shuffle to the right 30 feet, shuffle to the left 30 feet. • Repeat each side 4 times, rest. Repeat again.

Pectoral Muscle Stretch • Place your elbow and hand on a door frame. • Step your opposite foot through the open door. • Standing straight, rotate your body away from your elbow. Hamstring Stretch • Sit on the edge of a chair. • Bend one knee and keep the opposite leg straight. • Place your hands together on top of the straight leg. • With your back straight and your chest high, slowly slide your hands down the top of the straight leg. You will feel the stretch on the back of your straight leg. • Stretch and Move • Restorative Yoga • Active/Restorative Yoga Blend

Intermediate • Support yourself on your forearms. • Go up on your toes. • Keep your butt low and your spine straight from head to toe. • Do for thirty seconds to one minute. Advanced • Lie on your back with a ball between your thighs. • Lift your feet off the ground; straighten your knees. • Repeat for one minute.

BUILD STRONG MUSCLES

• Start with lower weights using free weights or on the machine. • When you find that doing two sets of 20 is no longer a challenge, increase the weight resistance by five percent each week. • Try an introductory group fitness class (see below) at the PJCC. Don’t worry about feeling intimidated. If a move feels too challenging, ask the instructor to recommend an easier version.

REFUEL AND DESTRESS

GET GOOD SLEEP

• Medium banana and ricotta cheese

• Go to sleep and wake up the same time every day.

• 1 tablespoon almond butter on whole wheat English muffin

• Avoid sleeping in, even when staying up late.

• 1 cup fresh berries with a quarter cup Greek yogurt

• Keep your bedroom cool and dark.

• Half a turkey sandwich

• Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual such as reading or meditating.

Destress with foods that include magnesium, a mineral that is known to help calm anxiety and found in foods such as: • Sunflower and pumpkin seeds • Spinach salad • Avocado • Beans

• Control your exposure to light.

• Stay away from rich or big meals and alcohol at least two hours before bedtime. • Wind down and clear your head— these smart phone apps can help: Stop, Breathe & Think; and Calm: Meditation & Simple Guided Mindfulness.

"Dad … the PJCC ski trip was on fleek!”

n the suburban jungle of Foster City some rare creatures can often be spotted around the PJCC. Some walk around with Bieber-inspired locks and Beats headphones while others sport yoga pants and the infamous “messy” bun. It is none other than the elusive teenager. What do they all have in common? A small remote device known as a “smart phone” connecting them to each other through a variety of applications including Instagram, Snapchat, and another that can only be described as the sound of a bird tweeting in 140 characters or less. In a world where teens speak with their thumbs—or grunts, if you’re lucky— parents are often left bewildered as to how to communicate with their formerly chatty children. While it has been all too entertaining for parents to watch horrendous fashion trends repeat, we haven’t been too lucky in the language department. Boring has been replaced with basic and super with hella. Wouldn’t it be easier if the world’s best language learning software, Rosetta Stone®, came out with a teen edition? Parent: “I really enjoyed that film.” Teen translation: “Yo! That flick was on point doe.”

my direction! It better be on fleek when it’s done. I know you’ll be thirsty to see your Bae and unless this room is spotless, it ain’t gonna happen.”

Your Free Trial Starts Now In the box below is the key to unlocking the tongue of teens. This information is revealed from a group of PJCC teens whose identity is protected in order to preserve their “cool” factor and avoid retaliation for breaking the teen code. Our informants leak the top five “words” parents need to know in order to attempt communication with their teenager.

And don’t worry if your teen doesn’t feel ya (approve). By the time you’re up to speed, the lingo is likely to change and you’ll be starting all over again.

The language problem is further compounded by the fact that teens outgrow slang as quickly as they do their trendy Converse low-top sneakers. Right when we think we’re hip to the jargon, the words are retired and no longer da bomb. Crazy is back to having two syllables and its previous incarnation, cray, is out. And even though it is true that you only live once, it’s so last year to say YOLO.

Send your teen to these PJCC teen programs—where they all speak the same language (see page 25 for details)

Time for Your Test What would you say the next time you want to tell your teen to clean their room? It should sound something like this: “Please clean your room fam, and don’t throw shade

Teen Speak 101 On fleek. “That PJCC Tahoe ski weekend was on fleek.” Although 99 percent of adults may consider an eight-hour road trip with teens a nightmare, this group of teens thought the entire excursion was on fleek or on point (translation: “very good”). Throwing shade. “Don’t throw shade just because you’re having a bad day!” We all know what it looks like when our teen is giving attitude: the rolled eyes and hands on hip. For a minute you think you actually saw their ears turn off. If sass was on a spectrum, throwing shade would be at the top, right above baditude (translation: someone with serious authority issues). Bae. “My bae hasn’t texted back in the last 30 seconds!” While this word looks like it’s missing a few letters, our informants reveal it functions as a noun, stands for “Before Anyone Else,” and is typically directed at a significant other. Don’t you wish your teen had acronyms for their other priorities? Maybe they should try Hbae (homework before anything else). Thirsty. “He is thirsty!” “Yeah! He always needs attention.” If you hand your kid a bottle of water when they say someone is thirsty, you will officially show your parent status. Being thirsty no longer means you’re dehydrated but refers to another “de” word, as in “desperate,” and nobody wants that. Fam. “My fam is always there for me.” Your kids are so sweet because you always overhear them talking about their family, right? Well … not exactly. Teens use this term to talk about people who are close to them, usually their buddies. Apparently these days you can pick your family!

Each year, athletes choose from one of 15 individual and/or team sports to play in this exciting international competition that draws teens from around the globe to the U.S. host city. The Peninsula Delegation was represented in basketball, soccer, tennis, and swimming. Our star athletes brought their “A” game and have the hardware to prove it, bringing home Silver and Gold Medals for Team Peninsula.

Co-sponsored by Ronald C. Wornick Jewish Day School, Peninsula Temple Beth El, Congregation Beth Jacob, Peninsula Temple Sholom, Peninsula Sinai Congregation and the PJCC.

The 2015 Team Peninsula Maccabi athletes brought home both silver and gold medals. performance on the field/court but off as well, in the form of a Midot (value) Medal. Last year, the Peninsula’s own Matthew Gurovich, age 15, joined Team Dallas as a member of their mixed team to play 16U basketball. The team struggled with some tough and frustrating losses, but Matthew demonstrated leadership throughout the entire competition. His coach rewarded him with a Midot Medal for embodying the characteristics that the Games aim to foster.

While competition is the main draw of the Maccabi games, it is not its foundation.

During the Games teens also participate in a day of service addressing a topical issue selected by the host city, and Team Dallas focused on food justice. Not only did this enable teens to help their host community by packing food boxes, but they were able to connect their newfound education to similar food justice issues facing their own home towns.

Jewish values underscore events of the entire week. Above the goal of winning, teens are challenged to play with rachmanus (compassion) as they demonstrate sportsmanship, fair play, and respect. Athletes can earn medals, not only for their

Why Maccabi? At a recent Maccabi Information Night at the PJCC, Maccabi tennis alumni Ari Fridman, now 17, explained the importance of the “Jewish Olympics.” “I’ve made

lifelong connections,” he said. “I still text with teens I met at the first Games I attended four years ago in Tennessee!” Both Ari and his twin brother Josh are counting the minutes until they can return to Maccabi yet again, but this time as coaches for the Peninsula Delegation. The Maccabi experience means more than just five amazing days. As the Maccabi Delegation Head for the past five years, I’ve been lucky enough to witness athletes break out of their comfort zone through the encouragement of coaches they met just two days prior. I’ve seen our delegations come out in droves to support a fellow team member as they go for the Gold; I’ve watched with pride as they root just as strongly for another trying to get at least one win before the tournament comes to a close. Without even recognizing it, each year our delegation forms a community with a common culture of respect, pride, and compassion. And that goes far beyond “being just a Jewish teen from Foster City.”

MEMBER MOMENTS tarting with his 1939 birth in Harbin, Manchuria (China) to his 2015 induction into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California, David Nigel, 77, has more than a few stories to tell. He can talk about his grandfather’s harrowing escape from the Pogroms of 1880s Poland to a promising new life in Manchuria where David was born. He can tell you how, as an infant, his family was again chased from their home when the Japanese army started becoming aggressive throughout Asia. Maybe he’ll talk about his childhood in the Philippines; his 30 years serving Peninsula school districts and 47 years teaching Holocaust Studies, Philosophy, Ethics, and Values; or he might mention how, as a student on his high school’s basketball team, playing one memorable impromptu game against the visiting Harlem Globetrotters and guarding the legendary Meadowlark Lemon.

Now 17, the honor roll high school senior is still playing soccer but on a much larger scale. She’s attended the JCC Maccabi Games (see previous page) as part of the Peninsula Delegation team for the last four years and sports two team Bronze medals and one Silver. The star athlete is also the current attacking center midfielder for the Santa Clara Sporting 98G Green. But for all the enjoyment that soccer brings, it’s not the medals awarded or accolades earned that Sofia finds most rewarding; it’s the relationships formed.

“I’ve met most of my best friends through soccer and many of my coaches have been amazing role models for me,” she says. “Soccer has taught me about being a team player. Cliché, I know, but I’ve learned the importance of every single player and how to work together to achieve goals. I’ve also learned the importance of perseverance because my team has won games in the last 20 minutes when we were down by three goals!” For all her years on the soccer field, it’s memories of the JCC Maccabi Games that hold a special place in Sofia’s heart. “The Games allowed me to meet Jewish teens from around the world and make deep connections through our shared faith and upbringing,” she says. “I met so many different people from so many

She speaks in the past tense because at 17 she has “aged out” of the Games that are for youth ages 13 – 16. However, that’s not deterring the resourceful athlete who says she looks forward to the possibility of being a Maccabi coach in a few years.

Yes, that Meadowlark Lemon. As the popular co-facilitator of the PJCC’s weekly “Let’s Talk About It” program, David is never short on topical events for a lively discussion. Most of his class participants are familiar with David as a teacher; however, many aren’t aware of his rich sports background that led to being one of just four people inducted in the 2015 Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

From left: Nicole Cruz, PJCC Youth and Family Programs Coordinator; Nicole Francis, PJCC Director of Youth, Family and Recreation and Maccabi athlete Sofia Schnur.

“Sofia is an athlete of character,” says Nicole Francis, PJCC Director of Youth, Family, and Recreation, and Delegation Head for the past four Maccabi Games. “Not only does she excel in her accomplishments, but she embodies the spirit of the Games. Sofia demonstrates the Jewish value of rachmanus (compassion) and even through competition, when she is outscoring other teams, she does so with the utmost humility, even encouraging and advising the other team. We are always so proud to have her represent us. I can’t wait to have her back as a coach and watch her grow young athletes with her talent and charisma.” When she isn’t on the soccer field, Sofia can be found on another field, one with

horses. One of her favorite pastimes is volunteering at a local hippotherapy center (equine-assisted therapy). This isn’t surprising since the teen wants to major in Animal Science, Biology, or a pre-veterinary program and is anxiously awaiting her college acceptance letters. Her dream is to become an all-species vet and join the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

David’s involvement with local sports began in 1972 at Peninsula Temple Sholom where he served as coach for the Jewish Youth Athletic League, which was founded in the 1930s. The league’s colorful history is officially documented at Berkeley’s Magnus Jewish Museum. In addition, David coached local youth sports for more than 20 years and organized basketball leagues for San Bruno public schools to help cultivate future athletes. His lifelong passion for sports led to his 1971 appointment to the San Bruno Parks and Recreation Commission where he is currently serving his 46th year as Commissioner. He also enjoyed a term as President of the California Association of Park and Recreation Commissioners, and in 1979 he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. In 2005 he was further bestowed with a “Hall of Fame” award, acknowledging his involvement in raising thousands of scholarship dollars for students majoring in Recreation Supervision and/or Park Management.

“I hope to go to developing countries and teach proper animal care,” she says, exemplifying another one of the values of

“Sports have always been a very important part of my life,” says David in a humble tone, underplaying the magnitude of his contributions. “I feel honored and blessed to have been in a position to help our local sports community.”

the Maccabi Games, which is tikkun olam (repairing the world). “I don’t need to make a huge difference in the world, but I would like to make a huge difference in the lives of a few.”

David recently celebrated 52 years of marriage with his wife, Rose. They have two children and five grandchildren, which, he laughs, is just enough to start a basketball team. And he can’t help but boast that his mother is a vibrant, alert, and healthy 100 years old.

David played tennis at San Francisco State University and coached youth tennis teams. This means that at age 77, this retired teacher, educator, coach, Eagle Boy Scout, and Army Sergeant First Class, may just be getting started.

Paul Margolis is a largely self-taught documentary and fine art photographer with a unique ability to capture, preserve and convey the sense of vanishing worlds. He often combines images with text, both his own and in collaboration with writers and historians. His work has been exhibited and published and is in museums, historical archives, and private collections. Paul processed and printed these images using black and white film for the classic, timeless look that the medium gives. The New Yorkbased photographer will present and discuss his photographs of Israel at the PJCC’s 2016 Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration (see page 18).

“In the late 1970s, I spent a year in Israel and was overwhelmed by its complexities. I didn’t visit again until October 2013, when I found a modern, vibrant country that still retained some of the characteristics that I remembered. I was fascinated by the diversity of people and cultures that make up modern Israel; everywhere I turned, there was something that arrested my attention and called out to be photographed.”

Let’s Give the Girls a Hand

BY KIMBERLY GORDON, PJCC CULTURAL ARTS DIRECTOR

ack when I studied acting, the approach I considered most sacred to any new role was creating the character’s backstory. In order to play the part, I first had to understand her life beyond the page. While decisions were influenced and supported by the script, many details needed to be invented in order to make the character complete and “real.” This process has been applied for centuries by rabbis and scholars to better understand the intentions and lessons behind the actions of Biblical characters in the form of written commentaries called midrash. Certainly not exclusively, but overwhelmingly, the attention has been male dominated and focused on the patriarchs. Dating back to when Biblical stories were first told some 3,500 years ago, there has been an imbalance on the attention paid to women and their stories. Bible study e-zine DeeperStudy took the time to list the 100 most significant Old Testament characters based solely upon “how many chapters are devoted to their lives.” Just 18 percent were female, and over the centuries, regrettably our focus hasn’t changed much. Research

conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, concluded that in the top 100 grossing films of 2014 only 12 percent of identifiable protagonists were women and 30 percent of speaking characters were female. Enter Alicia Jo Rabins, writer, composer, musician, and Torah scholar who has created a song-cycle and study series devoted to the under-studied stories of women in the Torah. This spring, the PJCC is honored to pilot four sessions of Rabins’ Complicated Lives of Biblical Women curriculum. This series is a wonderful culmination to our cultural arts season addressing creative midrash as it encompasses literary, musical, and fine art depictions of these female characters. It also affords multiple opportunities for each participant to add relatability and authenticity by imposing motives, points of view, and artistic responses of these women. “This class will feel welcoming to those experienced or new to Torah study, since the approach is so fresh,” says PJCC Director of Jewish Life, Rabbi Lavey Derby.

He will team-teach the spring fourpart series with art historian Shir Kohavi. “It will be a safe and creative space to study these important stories and characters. Plus,” he adds with a smile, “there will be wine.” To further enhance the learning experience, the PJCC Art Gallery presents Who’s Huldah? Biblical Women Who Shaped our Tradition, a touring exhibition on loan from Hebrew Union College Institute of Religion Museum (see opposite page). Bringing it full circle, the entire community is invited to a free outdoor concert by Alicia Jo Rabins who will perform songs inspired by female biblical characters on Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 pm (following our social Happier Hour). The next time you’re performance, studying a program, or casually the PJCC Art Gallery,
