MATT CARDLE & KERRY ELLIS

Enjoy a wide variety of music from a host of original artists, at The Apex in the next few months… Matt Cardle and Kerry Ellis have previously enjoyed sold-out solo gigs at The Apex, but now both singers will unite for two special concerts, on 23 and 24 August. Kerry is recognised as the leading lady of West End and Broadway musicals, while Matt Cardle has become a multiplatinum recording artist since winning The X Factor in 2010, his debut single, 'When We Collide', was recently named as one of the UK’s Top 40 biggest selling singles of the past decade. British harmony trio Blake bring the finest songs from stage and screen in a celebration of movies and musicals, sung in thrilling vocal harmony on 14 September. Following the success of his 2014 'Me, Myself and I' tour, Nik Kershaw, one of the UK's most respected songwriters, returns on 20 September with another intimate evening of songs and stories. Former Noah and the Whale front-man, Charlie Fink brings live music and theatre on 24 September. Charlie’s new show, 'Cover My Tracks' is a tale of an idealistic young songwriter who sets out to write a pop masterpiece and then vanishes without a trace. Theatre and music interweave in this unique performance, which brings together the experience of a live gig and a modern folk tale.

06

Barbara Dickson is renowned and admired for her interpretations of traditional music. On 27 September Barbara is joined by Nick Holland on keyboards and vocals, for an intimate evening of superbly crafted, traditional and 20th Century songs. Evelyn Glennie makes a welcome return to The Apex on 29 September, along with the Cohen Ensemble. The programme is still to be confirmed, but is likely to include Rachmaninov’s Preludes Op 3, No.2, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Vivaldi’s Piccolo Recorder Concerto in C major and Corelli’s La Folia. 10cc’s Graham Gouldman has written many songs for other artists, including 'For Your Love' (The Yardbirds), 'Bus Stop' (The Hollies), 'No Milk Today' (Herman's Hermits). He also co-wrote ' I’m Not In Love', ' The Things We Do For Love', 'Dreadlock Holiday' and 'Rubber Bullets' with 10cc. Graham and his trio will perform a selection of his hits on 4 October. On 9 October, Jason Donovan will talk about the highs and lows of his career, with previously-untold stories and exclusive, stripped-back-and-acoustic versions of his biggest hits. Having taken their uplifting voices, powerful songs, spine tingling harmonies and raucous humour to audiences around the world, The Young’uns (10

Following their first album with Sandy Denny in 1967, Britain’s most successful progressive folk-rock band, The Strawbs expanded their soundscape with ambitious new compositions and luminaries such as keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman. The Electric Strawbs on 16 October sees original frontman David Cousins, along with Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk, move gracefully into their fifth decade of music making. Two-Tone ska legends, The Selecter and The Beat, unite for an exciting double-header show on 19 October. Led by the iconic Pauline Black and Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, The Selecter, will play hits including 'Three Minute Hero', 'Missing Words' and 'On My Radio'. The Beat, fronted by Ranking Roger, have a massive back catalogue of skanking greats. Both bands are renowned for their energetic live shows, which get everyone dancing. Give a big 'Shout' for Lulu, who returns, on 22 October and 7 November, for two shows packed full of hits, new songs and songs that have influenced her throughout her incredible career. Individual members of critically acclaimed funk and soul band, Brother Strut (27 October) have performed on records that have accumulated over half-a-billion sales. Their debut album was in the top 10 UK album charts, made no. 2 on the UK iTunes chart and was play-listed

BBC Radio 4's favourite comedian, Jeremy Hardy has also been seen on TV in QI, Mock The Week and Grumpy Old Men. See him at The Apex on 1 October Graeme Swann, England’s greatest ever spin bowler, and Henry Blofeld, cricket’s best loved commentator, bring a barrage of new stories from on and off the field in Great British Spin Off on 5 October. Fast Show star, Simon Day brings several larger than life personalities 'In Character' on 12 October, including Fast Show pub bore Billy Bleach, confirmed bachelor and unpublished poet Geoffrey Allerton, and one of Britain’s

most dangerous men, Tony Beckton. Finally, the legendary prog rocker and inventor of world music, Brian Pern will perform a piece of music and modern dance. Enjoy an evening of comedy with Sean Kelly and the Stars of Storage Hunters on 18 October. The high-speed-ever-smiling auctioneer also has a career as a stand-up comedian and has headlined the Las Vegas MGM Grand several times! T-Money and Green Mile will also perform their own stand-up sets, before helping with the charity auction finale, with all proceeds going to Help for Heroes. On 6 November, Ray Mears presents ‘Born to go Wild’, explaining why he believes the natural areas on our planet are vital for cultural, spiritual, moral and aesthetic reasons. WEST SUFFOLK PARKS

WEST SUFFOLK

PARKS West Suffolk is home to many beautiful parks, providing hundreds of acres of landscaped Suffolk countryside for you to enjoy. Parks including the Abbey Gardens, Nowton Park and East Town Park have plenty to offer, everything from unique events to an ideal setting to enjoy a picnic on a sunny day. If you haven’t visited Hardwick Heath, Brandon Country Park, Clare Castle Country Park and West Stow Country Park, these are also right on your doorstep and are the perfect locations to keep the kids entertained or walk the dog. West Suffolk parks create a fantastic excuse to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, entertainment and glorious scenery on offer throughout this stunning part of the country.

11

MEET THE GARDENER

Jason is one of the gardeners in the Abbey Gardens who works tirelessly to create beautiful gardens all year round. “I genuinely love my job – no day is the same, there’s no stress, and the best part is interacting with the public and giving them gardening advice.”

DISCOVER NATURE

Your local parks are the ideal locations to enjoy nature, whether you are already a nature lover or want to learn more about it. The unique arboretum in Nowton Park is home to trees from around the world such as eucalyptus from Australia, paperbark maple from China and Kentucky coffee trees from North America. A panda was carved in 1998 and placed in the China region along with some bamboo to add to the vision of this geographical area, which is very popular with children. There is also the Wildflower Meadow, sown in 1990. The introduction of wildflowers, like birdsfoot trefoil has boosted the numbers of butterflies recorded in the park. The Abbey Garden’s Appleby Rose Garden was originally an orchard, but is now a beautiful and established rose garden with over 400 rose bushes to be enjoyed. The Pilgrim’s Herb Garden, also situated in the Abbey Gardens, features many traditional medicinal plants believed to cure most ills and also ward off evil spirits. It was inspired by a now famous manuscript written at the Abbey in the 13th century which is housed in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. East Town Park is also home to some unique nature, for example the Ann Webb Plantation which is a diverse mix of native trees and shrubs, and the East Meadow, a beautiful area of mature walnut trees.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES* AT NOWTON PARK! Wednesday 26 July to Friday 1 September

This summer, Nowton Park are offering a whole host of fabulous activities for the kids to keep busy during the holidays - from laser combat to fire lighting, and bread making to building a boat - there is something for each of your little ones to learn and enjoy! All of the activities are listed on the What's On West Suffolk website. *Please note: some activities require advance bookings and an additional £2 fee.

OUTDOOR THEATRE

There are plenty of exciting events happening at the parks this summer, creating great entertainment for all the family. The Abbey Gardens have some fantastic outdoor theatre coming up, which is not to be missed! Outdoor theatre has massively increased in popularity in recent years, and is a perfect activity on a summer’s day – theatre doesn’t have to be indoors! Take a look at the outdoor performances coming up during the summer holidays for all the family to enjoy…

DOGS DON’T DO BALLET Biff is not like other dogs. He doesn’t do dog stuff like weeing on lampposts, or scratching his fleas, or drinking out of the toilet. No, Biff likes moonlight and music and walking on his tiptoes. You see, Biff doesn’t think he’s a dog. He thinks he’s a ballerina! Based on the bestselling children’s book by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie, this fabulous feel-good show features music, songs, hand-crafted puppets and Biff, the ballet-dancing dog!

WEST SUFFOLK WILDLIFE

Suffolk is home to a variety of interesting wildlife, some of which can be found in your local parks. If you look carefully, you may come across some creepy crawlies during your visit… Whether you're a history lover or simply want a picnic in a park, the Abbey Gardens provides a beautiful backdrop in which to enjoy. It also had its own wildlife feeding area that the kids will love. East Town Park is also a great location for spotting wildlife as it features some unique habitats and beautiful natural woodland. The stable yard, is a special wildlife area abundant with native plants and insects for you to watch. The Sturmer meadow area of the park is home to a variety of lizards that like to bask on log piles on sunny days. Kingfishers and grey wagtails can be seen fishing alongside moorhens and water voles. Nowton Park has two ponds that can be found on the way-marked circular paths leading you through the varied landscape. The meadow pond is rich in aquatic life and is a draw for grass snakes as a place to bask, hunt and swim. There is also the school pond – at almost an acre in size, it sits mostly in the shade of mature exotic trees and is home to moorhens, mallards and the occasional grey heron which feeds on the introduced mirror and crucian carp. Many different butterflies have also been spotted, thanks to the introduction of wildflowers in 1990. The park is even home to some bats! But you aren’t very likely to see these during the day. On various dates in July and August, there is the opportunity to join the rangers for a twilight walk to discover some of Nowton Park’s nocturnal residents on a guided bat walk. Bat detectors will be used to reveal their ultrasonic sounds, and you’ll be able to watch them hunt around trees and over ponds! Visit the What's on West Suffolk website for more details and to book.

THE OVO ENERGY TOUR OF BRITAIN CYCLE RACE COMES TO SUFFOLK

On Friday 8 September, Stage Six of the 2017 Tour of Britain will be taking place between Newmarket and Aldeburgh. People living along a 183km stretch of Suffolk roads will witness the world’s greatest cyclists race past their doorsteps during Britain’s “premier” road event, which for the first time features a stage hosted entirely within Suffolk. The cyclists with their hugely impressive entourage of police motorcycles, back-up vehicles and TV camera crews will be passing through dozens of Suffolk's iconic, picturesque villages and countryside. The towns who can look forward to welcoming the world’s top professional cyclists are Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds, Eye, Framlingham and Woodbridge. Newmarket the world-famous birthplace and home of British horseracing, will host the start of Stage Six and Aldeburgh, one of Suffolk’s favourite coastal towns will host the finish and all along the route villages and communities will have the chance to be part of this most thrilling road race event. In Newmarket, cafes, restaurants and shop owners are being encouraged to bring their shop front onto the High Street on race day and to decorate their shop windows with a cycling theme. Discover Newmarket, the tourism hub of the town, will be offering a unique behind the scenes tour on the afternoon of the race. The tour will include a rare insight into the Horseracing Industry along with the history and heritage of the town.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN WEST SUFFOLK Newmarket will be swapping saddles on Friday 8 September to celebrate the start of stage six of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain. The international home of horseracing and the Tour are perfectly matched as both present elite levels of sporting achievement. Two of the five British Classic Races are held here, plus countless racing days and the July Festival, the most glamorous event in the racing calendar. The recently opened National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and British Sporting Art is a world-class centre for sport and culture, in the heart of the town, and they are displaying a small art cycle exhibition, focusing on the science and history of cycling, until 6 October. The peloton will set off from the High Street at approximately 10.30am, but the fun and activities will be under way by around 9am when members of the public are encouraged to come and meet the teams, get autographs and soak up the atmosphere. Lots of activities are being planned during the lead up to the race, including local cycling clubs offering introductory cycle rides for people wanting to take up cycling. The clubs are also hoping to offer a ‘Ride the Route’ cycle ride, either the day before or the day after the Tour. Community groups along the route are being encouraged to create their own spectator area to cheer, hang bunting, wave flags and make lots of noise as the cyclists go past. Schools across west Suffolk are also gearing up to welcome the OVO Energy Tour of Britain as it presents a great opportunity for teaching and learning around cycling, with its health and emotional wellbeing benefits. Some local schools will also have the opportunity to put forward representatives to join the ‘ride out’ just before the race starts, and all schools along the route will be encouraged to come out on the morning of the race and support the event. 14

WEST STOW ANGLO-SAXON VILLAGE

With extensive indoor galleries and a stunning recreation of an Anglo-Saxon village, West Stow is a fascinating and enjoyable day out for all the family, come rain or shine. 17

UNCOVERING WEST STOW

In December 2007 a new excavation was carried out by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service on the site of the Collections Study Building at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, several hundred metres north-east of the original excavations. These excavations revealed the sites of five previously unknown early Anglo-Saxon Sunken-Featured Buildings (SFBs) and a postbuilt structure, providing further information regarding the nature and extent of the original early Anglo-Saxon settlement. Finds included both Roman and Anglo-Saxon pottery, food waste (sheep and pig bones), loom weights and an Anglo-Saxon bone comb fragment. The excavations also revealed a phase of prehistoric occupation, with finds including struck flint flakes and burnt flint. Plough lines uncovered at the north end of the site also provided evidence of agricultural activity in the medieval period. Finds from these excavations will be added to the already extensive galleries for the first time later this year, as part of the Anglo-Saxon Centre redisplay, thanks to ‘Resilience Funding’ from Arts Council England. There will also be a temporary display dedicated to the 2007 excavations in the Visitor Centre at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village.

EDUCATING THE FUTURE ON THE PAST

Last year, West Stow achieved a record number of school visits with over 16,000 children visiting from 250 schools around the region. Many come from Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. With others from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, London and even Lincolnshire and Kent. The schools programme is aimed mainly at Key Stage 2, but support a wider range of learning outcomes for many ages. The children visit as modern day investigators finding out about the artefacts uncovered at West Stow and the surrounding area as well as exploring the experimental aspects of the unique reconstructed Anglo-Saxon Village.

THE

TREASURES OF

MOYSE’S HALL MUSEUM This beautiful medieval museum, in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, houses rich and eclectic collections and changing exhibitions from Sci-fi to local finds. The museum hosts events ranging from themed craft workshops for all the family, to historical talks and lectures. In the atmospheric setting of the Undercroft, there are also plentiful evenings of entertainment including theatre and live music from a variety of artists and genres.

LOST PROPERTY: PRIVATE LOSS TO PUBLIC GAIN

Suffolk and Norfolk consistently yield high proportions of ‘treasure’ reported to The Portable Antiquities Scheme each year, with some of these finds ending up in museum collections. Moyse’s Hall Museum’s catalogue reads like a Who’s Who of Bury St Edmunds’ Victorian academia. Henry Prigg, who discovered Graves at West Stow, M. R. James who helped form the earliest academic surveys of the town’s former abbey and Harvey Frost whose coin collection affords the museum a dynastic history of England from money, to name but a few. Such collections come through public finds from activities like metal detecting and the finder’s subsequent generosity, the assistance of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and the generosity of charitable bodies such as the Art Fund. The exhibition is now open to the public until 1st October.

*IMAGES FROM THE 2016 SCI-FI EXHIBITION

SCI-FI EXHIBITION 2017 MURDER IN THE BARN In 1827, during an altercation in the Red Barn, Polstead, Maria Marten was shot dead and her body hidden underneath the rural building’s soil surface. The tragedy, perhaps seen as a corruption of the rural idyll, was published nationwide and the hanging of convicted murderer, William Corder, drew crowds in the thousands. Much has been written of the murder, from plays to songs, books to poems; and it continues to inspire alternative theories on the details and identities of those involved. After the hanging Corder’s body was anatomised and artefacts from this process are on display at Moyse’s Hall. Together with other items associated with the murder and court case you can see a book bound in Corder’s skin and his tanned scalp. Grizzly artefacts sit comfortably in amongst displays on Poaching, Witchcraft and Crime and Punishment.

Saturday 21 October – Sunday 26 November The annual exhibition continues to attract visitors from all over the region with some original screen used props, high quality replicas, memorabilia and public collections around the theme of Sci-fi and action. In the past, original props from Terminator, Star Trek, Superman and other blockbusters have wowed the audiences. This year the exhibition helps celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars- released in May 1977 to massive acclaim. To open the show on the 21/22 October we have the universe's most feared bounty Hunter- Boba Fett actor Jeremy Bulloch meeting and signing for the visitors. There is also a chance to see more original props from film and TV, including rare memorabilia and comics; focusing on 40 years of the British comic 2000AD. More exciting details coming soon to a galaxy near you!

GOK WAN

IS NAKED & BARING ALL!

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW GOK WAN

GOK WAN

travels the country with his new show

Naked & Baring All

and he talks to WOWS magazine to reveal a little more...

So Gok, this autumn you are off round the country with your new show, Naked & Baring All. Without giving too much away, tell me a bit about what audiences can expect?

I describe the Naked & Baring All Tour as the truth behind the truth – all the stuff I haven’t talked about in the past. The show will be full of surprises and will be quite a revelation! Will much of the material you discuss be new to your fans? I haven’t discussed a lot of the stories with friends and family and actually some of it I haven’t discussed with myself before! They have been locked up in a file in my brain called memories which had been mislaid over the years. Naked & Baring All will give audiences the chance to learn a huge amount about who I really am. It’s going to be really funny, emotional and ridiculous and packed with anecdotes. There will be laughter and tears - a real mix of emotions. Are you going to talk about your whole life or just specific parts of it? What will the structure be and will the audience have a chance to ask you questions?

Myself and my director Owen Lewis who is brilliant, funny and actually quite hot, came up with the idea to use the different tools that I’ve used in my career as the basis for Naked & Baring All. So, there will be lots about fashion, body shape, style, cooking, that kind of thing but there will be other surprises There is a lot to cover - you’ve done so much! How will you condense it all?

If I did my whole life I’d be on stage for a week! We’re

still devising it, but Owen and I will pick stuff out that either makes him laugh, cry or wince, and that’s the stuff we need. But as you say, how do you cover someone’s life in 90 minutes? At the moment I’m trying to hit four buzz points. Firstly, it needs to be more honest than I’ve ever been. Secondly, it needs to show a side of my personality that I have never given out on screen before - which is “who is the real me”. Thirdly, it has to be inspiring there is life after anorexia, the bullying and so on. And finally, it has to be fun, it’s got to have all the humor in there, because you know, life is really funny. Every single day stupid and ridiculous things happen to us all and I think they are sometimes the most valuable anecdotes to give out to people because it’s the stuff that people can empathize with straight away. So will there be any gossip in the show?

Yes, lots of gossip and lots of secrets but you’ll have to come along to find out! I have had a very colourful life let’s put it that way! What do you hope audiences will take away from it? I hope audiences will have a lot of fun, and get a real sense of anything is possible in life.

Originally you wanted to be an actor and went to Central School of Speech and Drama. How did you make the leap from acting to being a stylist and being on TV?

When I was training, I wanted to do Shakespeare, Chekhov and Brecht and be out there performing at the Globe and the National, but over the years I realised it just wasn’t me! I have a skill at doing a different kind of performing on stage which is often centered on humour

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW GOK WAN and cheekiness. I did lots of different jobs. I was a recruitment consultant, worked in restaurants, bars, lots of different things and then I fell into hair and make-up – which is a big part of the show so I won’t tell you now – you’ll have to come along and find out!

What about friends - do you have much time to go out with them?

Tell me about How To Look Good Naked. You inspired thousands of people and helped them feel good about themselves in all sorts of ways. It really catapulted you to the big time and made you a household name.

Do you get people writing to thank you for helping them?

It was really successful, incredible, just a great show. We did six series and I loved it. We went out on a massive high as we were still getting great figures and if Channel 4 said let’s do some more I would make it again in a heartbeat. The show still regularly runs in the UK and overseas. Did being a stylist come naturally?

I think taste comes naturally but styling is like any art form. It is entirely subjective. But you have to learn the technical side of styling - the relationship you have with PRs and designers, understanding how far you can push it with a client and understanding the logistics of building a business around it. Also, learning social media, your personal brand, accounts and how you do get repeat business, or a new client, all of that stuff you don’t get taught at college. I had taste, and I think I’ve got taste, but had to learn the other stuff as well. You’ve styled a huge number of people over the years, is there anyone you would like to style?

I do. Five or six nights a week I’ll be doing something, going to dinner or for drinks, to the theatre or I cook at home.

Do you know, I’m really fortunate I get a lot of people who do that. I’ve also had a lot of kids with eating disorders come up to me and say I’ve inspired them as I’ve been frank about what happened to me. So what’s next after the tour and after panto this Christmas?

I’ve got a couple of goals next year. I am in talks for a new fashion project which is being developed at the moment. I’d like to take the Naked & Baring All show out to more places next year including internationally. I think the next thing though will be a business - I really fancy a restaurant or nightclub. If it’s a restaurant it will be Asian food, though I’m not sure where it will be. All I know is I’m starting to get those butterflies about it and once I get them I know it’s the right thing to do. Gok Wan is ‘Naked & Baring All’ at THE APEX, Bury St Edmunds, on Sunday 19 November, call 01284 758000 or see www.theapex.co.uk for details.

I really enjoy makeovers. They are the things that I get a lot of buzz out of, dressing real people with real bodies and real self-confidence issues. For me it’s far more empowering than dressing a celebrity as they can afford any of the clothes they want, they have a body a trainer has given them and they eat nothing but dust for months on end. So for me, it’s not as fulfilling and I’d much rather be with Barbara from Bolton - it’s great because you get to meet real people. All the stuff that comes out of a makeover is just gold. A lot of them are terrified though as it’s a really intimidating thing. Most people I dress are worried and afraid but it’s my job to show them it’s for the best. It’s also my job to show them how to use these new tools and how they find the confidence with them. With so much going on in your life with all the things you do and the projects you are involved in, how do you find time to relax?

I hate rest, sleeping and days off! I’m not keen on holidays but I do try and have one night off a week to relax and I will run a bath, light some candles, put the TV on, then I will get a book - I’m quite a restless person and find it really difficult to relax. I’m really fortunate that I still love my job, it drives me nuts sometimes but I still love what I do. I also have hobbies, stuff that I’m really interested in though I’m not very good at just having a hobby because it always turns into something bigger. For instance, some people are quite happy buying a lump of clay and make an ashtray for their living room. I’m not happy with that as I’d want to create a vase to go into Tate Modern! So what are your hobbies?

Fashion is my job, DJing, Painting and Magic are my hobbies. I have always drawn and sketched and I find it very relaxing. I am also studying with a magic teacher and learning some card tricks. I have lessons whenever I can fit them in. 27

Resting near the banks of the River Lark at West Stow, Bury St Edmunds, Fullers Mill Garden is peaceful and enchanting, combining light-dappled woodland with a collection of rare and unusual shrubs, perennials, lilies and peripheral plants, collected over the last 58 years by the garden’s creator, Bernard Tickner MBE. The garden itself includes the Top Garden, where in summer it becomes a romantic scene, with birches underplanted with silver; the Inner and Outer Quandaries where spicy scents of the Mediterranean meet the elegance of delicate Indigofera, dancing red Crocosmia, and the sleepy heads of Dierama; and the tranquil waters of the River and the Mill Pond. The garden was gifted in 2013 to Perennial, the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those working in, or retired from, horticulture. Bernard continues to fully fund the garden, but Head Gardener Annie Dellbridge and her team of gardeners and volunteers now look after the garden for the delight and enjoyment of visitors from April to the end of September. © Marcus Harper

In April 2017 it was announced that the National Heritage Centre has been shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year prize.

What you will find at the National Heritage Centre at Palace House: NATIONAL HORSERACING MUSEUM: Based in the old Trainer’s House and King’s Yard galleries the National Horseracing Museum tells the story of horseracing from its earliest origins to the world-wide phenomenon it is today. Using the latest interactive and audio visual displays the Museum also takes a different look at the sport, examining the science of the sport. Your visit will not be complete without riding a winner on our famous Racehorse Simulator!

ROTHSCHILD YARD: Discover and meet the heroes of racing themselves - the racehorses! The Rothschild Yard has been returned to its former glory to stable horses, showcasing the work of the Retraining of Racehorses charity. Here, you can get up close, and meet these beautiful animals. Twice daily, at 11am and 2.30pm, demonstrations take place in the Peter O’Sullevan Arena. Check their website for more details of the resident horses and daily demonstrations FRED PACKARD GALLERIES: Situated in the remaining element of Charles II’s racing palace is the Fred Packard Museum and Galleries of British Sporting Art - a new home for the British Sporting Art Trust. Paintings by George Stubbs and Sir Alfred Munnings rub shoulders with works from John Singer Sargent and John Wootton showcasing the finest British Sporting Art from the 17th – 21st Century.

THE NATIONAL HERITAGE CENTRE THE TACK ROOM & PANTRY BAKERY: Situated in The King’s Yard is The Tack Room. It serves traditional British food with a twist, using the very best that East Anglia and in particular Suffolk has to offer. The Pantry Bakery offers food to go – from sandwiches to scones, delicious artisan breads and coffee. Palace House Shop Our gift shop stocks a wide range of merchandise to remind you of your visit to Newmarket. Many of the products that you will find take their inspiration from objects and paintings in our collections.

ICKWORTH HOUSE, PARKLAND

AND GARDENS: A GEORGIAN ITALIANATE PALACE IN AN IDYLLIC ENGLISH LANDSCAPE Ickworth is a vast canvas on which generations

of one extraordinary family, the Hervey's have expressed their passions and personalities across the Estate. Its colourful heritage, once reserved for a privileged few, is now on show for all to see. The Estate reflects the Hervey's passion for everything Italian, influenced by their travels in Europe. The Rotunda is a Neo-classical masterpiece, created by the 4th Earl of Bristol to house treasures such as an extensive collection of silver and portraiture. These treasures also include paintings by Reynolds, Gainsborough and Vigee Le Brun and a dominating sculpture in the Entrance Hall; ‘The Fury of Athamus’ by Flaxman. There’s also fascinating collections of fans, porcelain, books and furniture to discover. From upstairs to downstairs, step back into the 1930s with life below stairs and experience what life was like for staff at Ickworth. Each month, on special Living History days, see the Cooks, the Housekeeper and other staff and eavesdrop on their fascinating stories. Delve deeper into Ickworth’s history with morning and afternoon tours led by a team of knowledgeable and passionate volunteers. Enjoy Ickworth throughout the seasons with an ever-changing landscape. Be inspired by the ancient woodland and pastoral fields with a variety of walks, from a rambling 2 miles to an adventurous 7 miles. Take one of the self-led walking leaflets with you to explore Ickworth’s history and story as you go. Explore, discover and rediscover something new every season in Ickworth’s gardens, a place of contrasts, tranquillity and enchantment.

34

ICKWORTH HOUSE, PARKLAND AND GARDENS

The Italianate Garden is the first of its kind in the UK - it’s a distillation of the gardens of classical Italy given an individual English touch. Spend time down at the historic Walled Garden, perfect for a picnic while spotting the wildlife that passes by. Every first Wednesday of the month visitors can explore the wider parkland with speciality walks around the ancient woodlands and buildings. Ickworth is also one of the premier bat sites in the UK, so take part in an evening Bat Walk to learn about their habitat and what we can all do to improve it. When visiting Ickworth, the cafes are a must do! The West Wing Café is nestled next to the Orangery with views across the Italianate garden. The menu has something for everyone and is all made on site from fresh ingredients. Help yourself to sandwiches, cakes, and tray-bakes from the counter. Indulge in the hugely popular ‘Scone of the Month’ with fresh produce from across the estate. Salads and hot dishes, like Italianate pizzas are ordered at the till, made fresh in the kitchen and brought to your table. If you’re visiting with your four legged friend then Porters Lodge Outdoors Café is the perfect place. With bird feeders nearby so as you enjoy your treats, you can watch the birds enjoy theirs. Ickworth also invites you to visit the recently transformed Squash Court Café. A space in the West Wing designed to help you relax, unwind and delve into the hidden story of Jack Honeyball and the 4th Marquess of Bristol playing squash at Ickworth. Visitors are able to immerse fully into fun and interesting stories as well as enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.

Ickworth is also home to a beautiful gift shop and plant centre, with something for all ages from locally sourced food and treats to books, rugs, home and ladies accessories, you’re sure to find inspiration! As well as the usual varied selection of peat free grown herbaceous perennials, shrubs and roses, this year the plant centre is also stocking peat free compost and a new range of garden tools – all your gardening needs catered for! Ickworth has an exciting calendar of events throughout the year for both adults and children alike, from Outdoor Theatres to the annual Proms in the Park. Family friendly activities are in abundance at Ickworth. On fine days, children can play on the swings, slides and zip wire in the adventure play area. Little ones will love exploring the acres of woodland with one of the '50 things to do before you are 11¾' adventure scrapbooks, which include fun, educational activities, from den-building to flying a kite. Every school holiday, Ickworth runs indoor seasonal themed kids’ arts and crafts in the comfort of the West Wing gallery. On rainy days keep your little ones amused with classic 1930s parlour games in the West Wing such as Ludo, dominoes and bagatelle. This summer, explore your inner Robin Hood, or is it Katniss Everdeen with Lookout Archery. Test and develop your skills on this range with the backdrop of the Rotunda to inspire you. Throughout the year, the House team are giving a rare opportunity to experience helping with conservation cleaning by signing up to volunteer for an hour. This is a great chance to get hands on with the beautiful collection, as well as being involved with caring for Ickworth. For the first time, Ickworth are also running a 5 week ‘Craftsmanship’ programme starting on Monday 4th September celebrating Ickworth’s love affair with wood, from beautiful mahogany doors to curving wooden floors, mighty oaks to box wood uncovered in the gardens. The programme explores the long traditions of collecting and using wood across the estate from a Ranger’s life to that of a Bishop, family stories and the livelihoods dependant on wood that continue today; all culminating in our Wood & Craft Fair on 7 and 8 October. ST EDMUNDSBURY CATHEDRAL

TOWER TOURS

It stands, said HRH the Prince of Wales, as a “spiritual beacon for the new Millennium” and can be seen for miles around. The tower of St Edmundsbury Cathedral is arguably the town’s best known landmark and the tower tours offered are proving popular once again. And even if you have been a ground floor visitor to this most impressive of buildings, you may want to get a whole new view from up high. Completed in 2005, Prince Charles was patron of the tower project and the brief for the tower was a simple one – for it to be constructed using traditional methods and materials which would last over 1,000 years. At 160ft high, the tower keeps a watchful eye over the town of Bury St Edmunds and is a new addition to this church, Suffolk’s Cathedral which welcomes around 90,000 visitors a year. The 202 steps to the top are worth the climb to see the world from the highest public accessible point in the town. Knowledgeable, friendly guides are ready to impart fascinating facts as you make you journey to the top of the tower. It’s not a mad rush to the top, it’s done in stages, stopping off to admire the building from ever changing views as you make your way higher. And once you reach the summit, it’s a view to be photographed so don’t forget cameras and phones to mark the fact that you’ve made it to the top! Back at ground level why not refresh yourselves in the cathedral’s Pilgrims’ Kitchen café which offers freshly prepared hot and cold lunches, cakes and Fairtrade refreshments along with free Wi-Fi. And spend some time in the church itself, admire the stunning stained glass and donate £1 to lay a brick on the model of the cathedral being built out of 200,000 LEGO ® bricks. St Edmundsbury Cathedral tower tours run from Wednesday to Sunday and last about 90 minutes and cost £10 per person. Bookings can be made via the cathedral website at www.stedscathedral.co.uk . Group bookings are advised to contact visits@stedscathedral.org

LET'S GO LEGO

An ambitious plan to recreate St Edmundsbury Cathedral out of 200,000 Lego bricks was launched in May last year and more than 20,500 bricks have been placed on the model so far. The model is being built in the Cathedral itself in the north transept and the table is staffed on a rota basis by around 30 friendly volunteers who greet visitors. So far, the grass labyrinth has been completed as well as most of the interior floor and the pillars are starting to rise and the cloisters are currently being built. St Edmundsbury Cathedral is just one of four cathedrals in the country to undertake the Lego project, the others being Exeter, Chester and Durham. Visits and Volunteer manager, Hannah Ratcliffe said: “Who doesn’t get excited at the chance to play with Lego? “It’s amazing how many grown-ups revert to being children when you start telling them about the project, and the idea of being able to place a brick on a module of the build just wows them. “It’s such an amazing opportunity for us to engage with so many more people. “Everyone’s welcome, no matter what faith, if any, please come to the Cathedral and experience Lego!” Visitors can donate £1 in exchange for one brick and the volunteers will show where it needs to be placed on the model. There’s a map near the model where people can show where they are visiting from and it really is turning into a global project with people from as afar afield as Australia and the United States doing their bit to build history. Closer to home, the model has plenty of local visitors who pop in on a regular basis to lay bricks, check on progress and chat to volunteers. General opening times are Monday to Saturday from 10.30am 4.30pm and 12.30 to 2.30pm on Sunday. There will be occasions where special services and events are taking place and it will not be possible to open the LEGO model, so please check social media and www.stedscathedral.org for details. If you fancy volunteering on this unique project, we are looking for volunteers for Mondays and Saturdays. More details are available from Hannah Ratcliffe on visits@stedscathedral.org Two sizes of LEGO models of St Edmundsbury Cathedral are for sale in the Cathedral shop priced at £150 and £35 and are fast becoming real collector’s pieces. FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL

SERVING UP THE

OUR BURY ST EDMUNDS

FOOD & DRINK F E S T I VA L

A star of some of television’s top cookery shows together with Rick Stein’s Executive Chef have been signed up to headline this summer’s Our Bury St Edmunds Food & Drink Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend. And once again some of the most popular establishments from the food and drink sector in the town will be showcasing their skills to the crowds in this very popular element of the event.

Who are the chefs?

Jack Stein will be making his first appearance on the Sunday of the event, which has been running for five years. He is the middle son of Rick Stein and started working as a kitchen porter as a youngster during the school holidays then moving to front of house at the age of 16. He worked as a chef in his father’s restaurants before gaining further experience overseas and is now Executive Chef of the Stein restaurants, pub and cookery school. On Bank Holiday Monday Paul Rankin, best known as one of the longest standing and most successful chefs on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ will take to the stage in the Stoves Cookery Theatre. As well as his numerous TV appearances Paul is also a successful cookery author, with ‘New Irish Cookery’ and ‘Gourmet Ireland’ among his work. Paul’s fans will also know that he has also developed his own range of traditional Irish breads and an Irish sausage range. What else will be happening?

This two-day free admission event, organised entirely by Our Bury St Edmunds, which runs the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), has become a regular fixture in the town’s foodie calendar and has gone from strength to strength during the last five years. Although the emphasis is on tasty treats and recipes there are a host of other things to see and do with something to please all ages. In the Arc shopping centre find deckchairs on the urban 47

beach and the Punch and Judy show as well as fairground rides. On Abbeygate Street there’ll be a mini-farm with animals including an alpaca and pygmy goats. Food and drink stalls will be found all around the town centre and The Traverse will be turned into a picnic area to allow visitors to sample the produce on offer. Local producers, many of whom will be familiar to shoppers in the town from the regular farmers’ market that started earlier this year, will be joining the festival’s farmers’ market on Angel Hill.

What’s cooking in the theatre kitchen?

The demonstrations in the Stoves Cookery Theatre are the highlights of the two days and the organisers have no doubt that Jack Stein and Paul Rankin this year will be a big draw. In between their presentations, some of the many talented chefs working in the town centre will be sharing their kitchen secrets. Jack and Paul will be putting on three shows each on the days they are here, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. In between their shows, chefs from local establishments including Mediterraneaninspired Casa Del Mar, local produce champion Ben’s and The Eaterie at The Angel Hotel will demonstrate their culinary skills. Also giving a presentation will be Zack Deakins, chef patron of 1921. Is Bury St Edmunds something of a foodie destination?

The growth of the Food & Drink Festival has gone hand in hand with the increasing range and quality of the cafe and restaurant offering in the town. In a survey carried out by Our Bury St Edmunds annually, it’s this element of the town centre that is highlighted as one of the most positive aspects of Bury. There are so many different types of cuisine to try including everything from traditional fish and chips to award-winning a la carte. Specialist retailers offer high quality ingredients as well as artisan food and drinks and the twice-weekly market offers a fantastic range of fresh produce.
