Sitting on the river Deben roughly 8 miles inland from the stunning Suffolk Heritage Coast, Woodbridge is a pretty market town with plenty to offer both residents and visitors. There is evidence showing habitation from around 2500-1700 B.C but the earliest record of Woodbridge as we know it today is dated to the mid-10th century. These days, with a population of 11,000, Woodbridge is a thriving community with superb facilities and opportunities. Served by a station with links to Ipswich and beyond, Woodbridge is within easy reach of the bright lights of our capital whilst remaining a quaint and picturesque Suffolk market town. Take a wander along the thoroughfare and you will see that we are fortunate to have many superb independent retailers and businesses offering great variety and choice. Whether you are looking for a diverse shopping experience or some delicious food and drink, Woodbridge has it all. Fancy a break from the bustle of the town centre? Head to the beautifully maintained Elmhurst Park or perhaps take a stroll along the banks for the river Deben and watch the boats coming in and out. If you are looking to take a trip out and see some of the local sights you will find there is plenty to keep you entertained. A visit to Framlingham Castle is always worthwhile and fish ‘n’ chips on the coast never disappoints. Woodbridge has a good vibe. There is a lovely community feel with lots of events held annually bringing together friends and family to celebrate this special town. WOODBRIDGE LIONS CLUB

The Lions’ Club of Woodbridge and District was founded in 1982. It’s members wishing to help the less fortunate in the Woodbridge area, which extends from the town boundaries of Ipswich and Felixstowe to include not just Woodbridge itself, but also Rushmere St. Andrew, Kesgrave, Martlesham, Martlesham Heath, The Bealings, Grundisburgh, Pettistree, Wickham Market, Framlingham, Sutton, Bawdsey & Orford. Our aims are as true now as they were then: Community Service Fund-raising to help the less fortunate within the community and further afield, and have fun and fellowship whilst doing it.

Membership now stands at 23; men and women drawn from all walks of life, united by a desire to help the local community. Community service includes the annual Christmas Parcels project and activities supporting environmental initiatives. The club funded the opening of a Repair Café by the Transition Woodbridge group and supported fifteen local schools by the donation of a children’s story book highlighting the dangers of plastics in the ocean. Fundraising takes in street and store collections and of course the spectacular Duck Dive at each year’s Woodbridge Regatta. WOODBRIDGE ART CLUB Founded in 1968 by a group of evening class students, the Woodbridge Art Club is now a flourishing organisation with an attractive studio, gallery and clubroom opposite the Tidemill. Having no premises in the beginning, they hung their first exhibition on the station railings and set about fundraising and a search for premises. In 1973 they were offered the rent of the dilapidated lower granary building and set to work to renovate it. Today the club offers a range of activities for painters, potters, lace makers and photographers. There are weekly talks and demonstrations with occasional social events and Saturday workshops run by working artists. Members are encouraged to use the studio for working and several groups meet during the week, enabling them to share ideas and experience. The summer exhibition runs at weekends from Easter till the end of September, when members can display and sell their work. We welcome new members - more information on our website. WOODBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB Winner of the East Suffolk Business & Community Club of the Year Award 2019 - Woodbridge Rugby Club is located at Hatchley Barn in Bromeswell on the edge of Rendlesham Forest. It is home to the Warriors and Amazons senior men’s and women’s rugby teams, an extensive Youth section of over 350 boys and girls as well as the Wheeled Warriors wheelchair rugby team. Its successful appeal to young and old comes

The Bentwaters Cold War Museum has become a popular attraction for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those interested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. The history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993 is covered particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Outside are the aircraft exhibits where the RAF Harrier, Hunter and Phantom can be seen, and are joined by the USAF A-10 Warthog which was a familiar sight in the skies over Suffolk when this iconic type operated from Bentwaters and Woodbridge.

BENTWATERS COLD WAR MUSEUM There is plenty of car parking space and the museum is suitable for all ages and has the added benefit of being an ideal all weather visitor attraction. The café and shop continues to be a great success offering light refreshments and souvenirs and card payment facilities. THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY The Waterfront at Woodbridge is a wonderful location blending fascinating boats alongside the historic Tide Mill with the constantly changing flow of the river, amidst rural scenery. For close on 20 years this friendly face was scarred by the crumbling decay of a derelict boatyard. A group of townspeople, the Woodbridge Riverside Trust, resisted plans to erect tall tower blocks, wanting a more sympathetic approach with some balancing reward for the community. Eventually an agreement was reached with cooperative developers to give the townspeople, through the Town Council, the Longshed and the Woodbridge Museum building, with use of the broad Waterfront Square and its slipway-access to the river. The resulting multi-million pound development that includes a restaurant and retail units will enable the community to use this unique space for a range of entertainment, social and educational activities. The Woodbridge Riverside Trust has a particular interest in the Longshed which will house a Heritage Resource Centre on a mezzanine area that overlooks a working space large enough to construct a full-size replica of the internationally famous Sutton Hoo ship. This working space will also allow for the construction of other craft such as rowing skiffs by groups both young and old. The potential to organise practical activities and short courses by clubs and organisations in the Resource Centre and for art, music and market events to be held in the Square is very exciting. already enabled the theatrical production of The King’s River bringing together local singers, dancers and musicians to illustrate the story of the discovery of the ship burial at Sutton Hoo. The Trust has the 45ft longboat Sae Wylfing that tours the county with its Ealdfaeder Anglo-Saxon re-enactors visiting events to bring the news of the Waterfront development. The Woodbridge Art Club, The Deben Rowing Club, the Camera Club, Maritime Woodbridge and the Shuck Festival are just a few of the groups already supporting this new venture and plans are already being developed for activities and celebrations in 2018. Standing on the River Walk behind a newly planted ‘dry’ garden Woodbridge Cruising Club is home to a membership of approximately 200 sailors. The club was founded in 1965 by a group of mostly motorcruiser owners but now caters mainly for sailing cruisers although motor boaters are still welcome. The club’s ethos is one of self help and the present black painted timber clad club house together with its extension and balcony, was built by members own labours over a period of 25 years. Maintenance and social activities are also carried out by members themselves. The club offers RYA approved training in navigation and seamanship during the winter months and organises cruises along the local coast and across to the Low Countries and France throughout the summer. It also has a library of charts and sailing manuals for the benefit of individuals seeking to explore further afield. Just42 continues to support local children and young people in and around Woodbridge through our various clubs and projects. The charity is overseen by 8 local trustees, has a staff team of 12 people who are supported by about 50 volunteers. The charity runs 8 youth projects each week - offering youth clubs in Sutton Heath, Alderton, Hollesley and Grundisburgh and 3 clubs in Farlingaye High school and a lunchtime support session there too. We deliver 6 children’s clubs in local primary schools each week and also go in to local primary schools to lead assemblies too. Just42 offers a successful mentoring pro-

The Deben Yacht Club was founded in 1838, so we have a long history of sailing dinghies and yachts on the River Deben here in Woodbridge. It acts as a voice for river users on major consultations, such as the recent Deben Estuary Plan, and planning and other matters. It engages in hands-on activities, such as compiling a River Code for all river users and monitoring the health of the saltmarshes. Everyone who loves the river, whether from the water or the banks, is encouraged to join the Association. INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WOODBRIDGE International Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the World. Woodbridge Town F.C. was formed at a meeting held on 23 July 1885, and the first match was played between the club’s own members on a pitch at Farlingaye Hall.[2] The club’s first match, against St Helens of Ipswich, resulted in a 10–0 victory. The Suffolk County Football Association was formed in the same year, and the club were a founder member, as well as winning the first Suffolk Senior Cup by beating Ipswich Town 3–1 in the final at Portman Road. In 1908–09 they won the Junior Cup by beating RFA Ipswich 2–1, and in 1912–13 were champions of the Ipswich and District League’s Senior Division. They won the Junior Cup again in 1927, beating Southwold Town 4–2. In 1929 they reached the final of the Senior Cup, but lost 5–0 to Ipswich Town The club struggled to find a permanent home, and played at five different grounds during the 1950s and 1960s. They won Division One of the Ipswich and District League and the Junior Cup in 1970–71. In 1977–78 they won the Senior Cup, beating Cranes 2–1. They were relegated in 1982–83, but returned to the Senior Division as Division One champions in 1986–87, also winning the Junior Cup. They won the Senior Division in 1988–89 (by which time it had become the Suffolk & Ipswich League), and were promoted to the newly established Division One of the Eastern Counties League. In 1990 the club bought a new ground to replace Kingston Field, and the opening game in October saw a crowd of around 3,000 attend for a friendly against Arsenal.

These days the team play in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division along with many local rivals including; Leiston, Debenham and Needham Market as well as some trips further afield such as King’s Lynn and Braintree. TIDE MILL

Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum is a Grade I listed building and a rare example of a tide mill whose waterwheel still turns. Indeed, it is currently the one of two working tide mills in the country still producing stoneground wholemeal flour. Woodbridge Tide Mill will have stood on the banks of the River Deben for 850 years next year, with the earliest record of a tide mill on this site dating back to 1170. In recent years, further protection and restoration work has brought it back into use as a popular, interactive museum with a new waterwheel and many fascinating exhibits that bring the mill’s rich history to life. It is now one of the most visited and interesting attractions on the Suffolk Coast, thanks to the hard work and commitment of the volunteers and the Board of Trustees The Tide Mill

runs a full schedule of Milling Demonstrations, the times for which can be found on the website below. These allow visitors to see the historic waterwheel in action as the stones grind the flour, which can be bought in the gift shop. It is well worth a visit to this unique piece of our national heritage. The Mill runs a pared back schedule during the winter season, but visitors are still welcome to attend the limited number of published Milling Demonstrations. The Friends of Woodbridge Tide Mill play an essential part in supporting the Tide Mill and are actively involved in raising much needed funds to keep the Mill running and open for all to enjoy.
