Nestled in the heart of Aldeburgh and serving the local community since 1887 when local businessman Newson Garrett built it to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall is one of Suffolk’s much-loved performing arts venues.
The Jubilee Hall gained fame in 1948 when local residents Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears chose it as a venue for their Festival of Music & Arts. In 1960, the first-ever performance of Britten’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was given in the hall and since then many notable opera premières have taken place there.
Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall has had a very special place in the hearts of the local community and visitors to the town for over 100 years. Each season, a varied programme of events is planned that not only entertains the Hall’s audiences but also support performers and partners working in the arts industry. Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall is a registered charity and it is thanks to the public that this historical venue can continue to be used and enjoyed by all. It is available to hire, not only as a theatre but also as a venue for meetings, conferences, wine tastings, and other events. From classical ensembles to environmental festivals and jazz nights, Jubilee Hall has it covered. The Arts
Aldeburgh Music incorporates Snape Maltings Concert Hall, the Aldeburgh Festival the Snape Proms and a yearround programme of events. As part of the Aldeburgh Festival, throughout June, hundreds of townspeople and visitors enjoy free concerts from the Bandstand on the Beach, with different artists every day. Snape Maltings sits on the bank of the river Alde and is home to a number of performance venues including the worldrenowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall. It plays host during the summer months to the Summer Theatre by the Sea, presenting plays to appeal to all tastes. Over the years, the town has also hosted HighTide Theatre festival, premiering brand-new productions before transferring to bigger theatres across the UK. As well as theatre, HighTide Festival also offers music, cabaret, comedy, readings of new plays, site-specific theatre, and talks with world-class artists.

Aldeburgh Museum
Aldeburgh Museum is housed in the Moot Hall, one of the best-preserved Tudor public buildings in Britain. Dating from the mid-16th Century, it originally contained six small shops and a prison on the ground floor and a meeting hall on the first floor. The building is situated on the site of the old market place which once featured a Market Cross, long since swept out to sea. When not in use as the Town’s Council Chamber, the first floor hall offers an attractive display area for the Museum. The displays contain items of local interest such as photographs and artefacts depicting life in Aldeburgh. The collection also contains Anglo Saxon finds from 1862 and the Snape ship burial excavations in 1992. The displays highlight early settlers – Romans and Anglo-Saxon, shipbuilding, trade and fishing, the Aldeburgh witches,
Regency resort, Slaughden and the Martello Tower and much more. The 16th century building recently underwent a refit thanks to a grant awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The museum is open every day from April to end of October and at weekends throughout the rest of the year. Aldeburgh’s Famous Faces Benjamin Britten Like Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Britten is one of the most famous names associated with Aldeburgh. Born in Lowestoft in 1913, Britten was writing music from a very early age and became one of the most influential figures in 20th Century British classical music. His important work includes the opera Peter Grimes, War Requiem and the The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra - much of which was written at The Red House, in Aldeburgh. His partner Peter Pears was was a huge influence on his work and the pair, with librettist Eric Crozier founded the Aldeburgh Festival in 1948. He was also responsible for the creation of the Snape Maltings concert hall in 1967. He, too, is buried in Aldeburgh Parish Church.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (9 June 1836 – 17 December 1917) was an English doctor and suffragist, the first woman to qualify in Britain as a physician and surgeon. She was the co-founder of the first hospital staffed by women, the first dean of a British medical school, the first female doctor of medicine in France, the first woman in Britain to be elected to a school board and, as Mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor and magistrate in Britain. She was born in London, the second of eleven children. Her father, Newson Garrett, came from Leiston in Suffolk, and her mother, Louisa née Dunnell, from London. The Garretts had been ironworkers in East Suffolk since the early seventeenth century. Elizabeth’s father, though not academically inclined, was an extremely determined entrepreneur. He left for London after finishing school, eventually moving back to Suffolk in 1841,where he bought a barley and coal merchants business in Snape. This proved to be a very prosperous venture. Whilst in Suffolk, Louisa gave birth to Louie and Elizabeth. The family lived in a Georgian house opposite the church in Aldeburgh until 1852, during which time Newson’s business successfully expanded, and Alice, Millicent, Sam, Josephine and George were born. Elizabeth retired to Aldeburgh, moving back into Alde House. In 1908, following the death of her husband, she became mayor of the town, the first female mayor in England. As mayor of Aldeburgh, she gave speeches for suffrage, before the increasing militant activity in the movement led to her withdrawal. In later life, Elizabeth devoted time to Alde House, gardening, and travelling with younger members of the extended family. She died in 1917 and is buried in Aldeburgh Church.
Snooks The bronze dog that keeps a watchful eye on youngsters at the town’s yacht pond. The statue was originally installed in honour of his owner, Dr Robin Acheson, who cared for the community from 1931 to 1959. Dr Acheson’s wife, Nora, also a doctor, carried on as GP after his death until she died in 1981 and her name was added to the monument later. Snooks, who followed his master as he made his calls and became a familiar sight around the town, got his name because the family ate tinned snook (a sort of fish) from Africa during the Second World War.

The name ‘Aldeburgh’ derives from old English ald (old) and burgh (fort), though much of this ‘old’ Aldeburgh has long since been lost to the sea. In fact, there is not a great deal of historical record of the town pre-16th century. However, the Domesday Book (1086) records this part of Suffolk as one of the most highly populated parts of the country. There is also archaeological evidence indicating the earlier presence of Romans and Saxons. With the large port of Dunwich, just down the coast, Aldeburgh was a small and relatively insignificant fishing village until the 1500s when it became a prominent port and home to a growing shipbuilding industry. The flagship of the Virginia Company, the Sea Venture, and two of Sir Francis Drake’s most famous ships – the Greyhound and the Golden Hind - were also built here.
History of Aldeburgh As the river began to silt up Aldeburgh’s importance declined as larger ships were no longer able to access the port. However, it survived as a fishing village into the 19th century when it became a trendy seaside resort. That said, fishing is still very much part of everyday life here with small boats still heading out from the shore and selling their catch from huts on the beach. In more recent history Aldeburgh became the first English town to elect a female Mayor, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, in 1908 and was, of course, famously the home of composer Benjamin Britten.

Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station
Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station evolved from the Suffolk Shipwreck Association station in 1851 which was originally in Sizewell and there has been a lifeboat here since that date. The present station has two boats - the Mersey-class lifeboat Freddie Cooper and the inshore lifeboat Susan Scott. The station covers the coast from Harwich to the south, and Southwold to the north. The current lifeboat station was built in 1994 to replace a smaller one on the same site. The new station gave cover for the first time to the boat and a launching tractor. Incorporated into the design is a public viewing platform. The station has showers and toilet facilities for the crew and a heated store for their foul weather suits. This new boathouse was built using part of the bequest of Mrs Eugenie Boucher, who died in 1992. The Freddie Cooper, on station since November 1993, is 38 feet long and is self-righting. She is powered by two 285 hp turbo -charged Caterpillar 3208T
diesel engines and she has a range of 140 nautical miles. These two engines push the boat through the water to a top speed of 16 knots. Fully laden she weighs 13 tons and she is operated by a volunteer crew of six. The Lifeboat has a capacity to rescue 43 survivors (selfrighting up to 21). She was purchased using a bequest to the RNLI from the late Mrs Winifred Cooper in memory of her husband Freddie. RNLI Headquarters have announced that Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station will be getting a new Shannon-class boat. The station’s inshore lifeboat - the Susan Scott- is named after a generous benefactor, who attended the naming ceremony.

3. The Martello Tower

3. The Martello Tower is the largest and Northernmost of 103 English defensive towers built between 1808 and 1812 to repel a Napoleonic invasion. The quatrefoil tower was built with nearly a million bricks and stands at the Orford end of the sea wall.

Aldeburgh Cinema Since it first opened in 1919, Aldeburgh Cinema has been at the heart of the local community…. showcasing new movies, old favourites and special events from around the world. The building itself dates back more than a century, but the cinema has remained up-to-date with its technical and visual presentation to ensure the best possible movie-going experience. Infused with the rich memory of decades of great movies, the spacious auditorium is fully accessible and retains many of its original features, including beautiful art deco lights. Playing a key role in the lives of generations of locals - and visitors - the cinema was privately-run for many years. As with many cinemas, times were sometimes tough and there was the threat of closure during the 1960s. To save their local landmark, a group of local people, including composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears, banded together to purchase the cinema and run it on behalf of the local community. Today, Aldeburgh Cinema is a registered charity, screening a diverse range of programming via its digital projection system. As well as showing the very latest Hollywood blockbusters, the cinema also frequently screens live and encore performances from the National Theatre and the Met Opera, along with arthouse productions, classics of the silver screen and fine examples of world cinema. The cinema’s impressive special events have seen the likes of Bill Nighy, Ralph Fiennes, Lenny Henry, Bill Turnbull and Anthony Horowitz take to the stage. Aldeburgh Cinema is recognised for the annual Aldeburgh Documentary Festival. Over the last quarter-century, the cinema’s annual Aldeburgh Documentary Festival
(now typically known as simply DocFest) has earned a strong reputation on the annual arts calendar, screening an outstanding array of documentaries, followed by lively question and answer sessions and debates with expert panels. Aldeburgh Cinema also has an active education programme, working with children and young people, giving them the opportunity to experience and get involved in film, with a focus on documentaries. We work with the local primary and secondary schools – so that local children have a chance to make films, as well as study and discuss them through outreach work. In addition, we have run a summer school with The Red House based on making documentary films and the cinema invites young people to come and enjoy special events and screenings. The aim is to encourage and give all children the chance to love and experience the wonderful world of film. Of course, no trip to the movies would be complete without treats. The cinema prides itself on offering a broad selection, from the essential popcorn to wines, beers and icecreams from the best local producers. On 1st April 2020, Snape Maltings and the Britten–Pears Foundation came together to create the new music, arts and heritage charity, Britten Pears Arts. Britten Pears Arts runs both The Red House and Snape Maltings.
The Red House The Red House on Golf Lane, Aldeburgh is the home Benjamin Britten shared with his partner, the tenor Peter Pears, for the last two decades of his life and where he wrote many of his famous works. The site also includes Britten’s evocative Library, the Studio where he composed, an award-winning Archive building housing the Britten-Pears Foundation’s extensive collections, and peaceful gardens. It also boasts one of the finest collections of paintings in East Anglia. The house has been carefully re-presented as it was, based on a room inventory and recollections from people who knew the house at that time. The result is a charmingly informal snapshot, as though Britten and Pears had just stepped out for a moment. Visit the room where Britten wrote such masterpieces as the War Requiem. His desk, piano and other original items have been put back into the elegant first-floor room created for him our of a former hayloft next to the main house. The Library was built on the site of a disused barn to the rear of The Red House in 1963. Britten and Pears entertained guests, cultivated vegetables, and even played croquet and tennis in their much-cherished gardens. There were many important social occasions

Aldeburgh Carnival
All being well, after an unprecedented two-year break, Aldeburgh Carnival will return for the 78th time in 2022 on the 13th, 14th and 15th August. Unlike so many carnivals, Aldeburgh is fortunate in being one of the few towns that has managed to continue a tradition which is at least 170 years old. In 1835 it was known as Ye Old Marine Regatta, becoming Ye Old Marine Regatta and Carnival in 1927 when a carnival procession was added to the programme of events. This was led by Father Neptune and his entourage – Queen Neptune, two Sharks, a Captain and six Sons of the Sea. On 29 August 1892, 15 events were held – 12 sailing races, two swimming races and a greasy pole competition. One of the big attractions of the day was a race for the East Coast Lifeboats from Aldeburgh (the coxswain of the Aldeburgh boat then was James Cable), Thorpeness and Dunwich. Swimmers competed for the Aldous 20 Guinea Challenge Silver Cup, a race which still continues. That event featured firework, Japanese fireworks in the afternoon and a traditional display in the evening. In 2017 the carnival celebrated its 75th birthday and in 2018 the event won the Family Tourism Event of the Year in the Norfolk and Suffolk Tourism Awards. In 2022 music will feature at various venues throughout the town on Saturday afternoon. Sunday sports events will feature the 10k run, childrens races on the sea front greens and the quirky egg boat race. The big events on Monday will include launching the lifeboat, a military band leading the carnival procession
in the afternoon and the magical lantern parade as the evening light begins to fade before it’s time for the spectacular firework display. Fund raising stalls and activities will continue over the three days and there will be lots of stalls selling their wares on the Crag Path. It promises to be bigger, better and more colourful than ever, but still organised by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by local businesses! Sport in Aldeburgh
Bounded by the North Sea in one direction and the River Alde in the other, it’s inevitable that sailing plays a prominent role in the leisure activities in the town. Slaughden Sailing Club was started more than 40 years ago by a small group of Mirror Dinghy enthusiasts. From very humble beginnings, the club eventually built a new clubhouse in 2003, part-funded by the National Lottery and helped by club members who gave their professional expertise for free. It’s now a friendly unpretentious sailing club offering competitive racing, training, instruction and a good social scene. Next door, is Aldeburgh Yacht Club. Founded in 1897, the Club now has around 1600 members and a large modern, purpose-built clubhouse. There is active racing at weekends from April to December with both keelboat and dinghy classes and a more frequent programme, particularly amongst the youth and junior classes, during August. The Club has an active social programme and new members are welcomed. Juniors are particularly encouraged with tuition available for both learning to sail and learning to race. Away from the water, Aldeburgh offers golfers a wonderful treat. Aldeburgh Golf Club, founded in 1884, has two courses - the 18-hole championship course and the River Course, a pretty 9-hole course more suited to beginners and high-handicap golfers. At 6603 yards but with no par fives on the men’s card, the Championship Course
enjoys fine views of the River Alde and the North Sea and is a challenge for even the best golfer. situated on free-draining sandy soil, play is possible throughout the year. Is tennis more to your taste? Try Aldeburgh Tennis Club, just off Park Road. Four championship standard hard courts, two of which are floodlit. New members are always welcome but visitors can use the courts on a pay-as-you-play basis. And right next door is Aldeburgh Bowls Club, a thriving friendly club where all comers are welcomed regardless of age or skill level. Once again, you can either become a member or pay when you play. From the Bowls Club, turn right along Jubilee Walk and arrive at King’s Field, the largest recreation space in Aldeburgh. Close to the town’s Community Centre, the area has an outdoor gym, play equipment for juniors and a toddlers playground. Aldeburgh and Thorpeness Rugby Club play their home games here and the field is well-used by locals and visitors.
