Farm sprayer commemorates daughter’s Olympic gold medal
A
farmer has named his new Fendt Rogator 665 sprayer ‘Tokyo’ – to commemorate a Gold Medal won by his daughter at this year’s Olympic Games. The self-propelled machine sprayer was supplied by Essexbased dealer RW Crawford Agricultural Machinery. It is the fourth Rogator operated by M & MF French, based at Meopham, near Gravesend. The sprayer arrived at the farm on 6 August. Owner Fred French says its delivery coincided with his daughter Kate French winning gold in the modern pentathlon at the Tokyo Olympics. “The sprayer arrived within an hour of Kate’s win,” said Mr

French. “It’s the most important machine on our farm and a significant investment, so it seemed appropriate to name it Tokyo after the Olympics host city on such a momentous day.” The modern pentathlon includes fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping, pistol shooting and cross-country running. Asked about her dad naming the sprayer to commemorate her win, Kate said she was proud of her farming background. “It’s typical of him to do something like that. I like the name plate – he will have to keep that sprayer now. I enjoy riding the horses and running when back on the farm, but in future I will want to drive the Rogator too.”
The business farms some 2,500ha of mainly cereals with oilseed rape, peas, beans and linseed as break crops. Group 1 wheats are grown for milling, and most of the grain is sold to commercial mills at Tilbury. The sprayer works more than 1,000 hours annually with the area increasing as extra passes are needed to tackle blackgrass. It also applies liquid fertiliser at variable rates based on soil surveys and yield map data. Mr French said: “A major factor in our loyalty to the brand is the back-up from Crawfords. We are looked after by the Ashford depot now, but even when the nearest depot was in Essex we could always rely on the service.”

Electric tractor is Fully Charged for special event this month
T
he UK’s only commercial all-electric tractor – Farmtrac’s FT25G – will be exhibited at this month’s Fully Charged LIVE show. Featuring a 72V lithium-ion battery and onboard charger, the zero-emission FT25G is billed as the first big step for any farmer looking to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising productivity. The tractor can be charged from a domestic socket to 100% in eight hours. It will be exhibited on stand E18 at Fully Charged LIVE, which takes place on 3-5 September at Farnborough International, Hampshire.
Immediate reaction The FT25G has all the functions and features of a compact tractor, with the benefits of electric power.
Applications include yard work, greenhouse work and equestrian or paddock work. The 22kW machione featured on a YouTube episode of Fully Charged – winning a positive reaction from the audience of electric vehicle fanatics. Farmtrac sales manager Steven Haynes said: “It has since proved itself to be a worthy alternative to a diesel-powered tractor. “This year we have further increased the options available on the tractor to make it even more useful in a host of year-round applications and we can’t wait for people to experience it firsthand.” Mr Haynes added: “Although this has been a less than ideal year in which to launch a new brand, the dealer network has grown very well for Farmtrac in

its first year, which is testament to the quality of the product.” The Fully Charged TV show is extremely popular, attracting more than 3m viewers each month to its YouTube channel. The FT25G was put through a series of tests around the farm on the show last year – impressing
host Robert Llewellyn and farmer Adam Henson. Mr Llewellyn said: “What it has proven today beyond a shadow of a doubt – and it’s not just me saying it, it’s Adam who is a proper farmer too – he drives tractors all the time and he absolutely loves this thing.”

New telehandler lifts productivity to next level
T
he latest Massey Ferguson TH telehandler series features a completely new cab – and other changes to enhance comfort, operation and productivity. Six models start with the semi-compact MF TH 6030 – rising to the latest MF TH.8043 with a maximum lift capacity of 4,300kg and height of 7.5m, which can be equipped with a 3,500-litre capacity bucket. Improvements to the hydrostatic transmission include a new operating mode to ensure the machines operate more smoothly than their predecessors. Powerful high-flow hydraulics, equipped with proportional control, help to deliver optimum handling, accuracy and productivity.
“This is not just an upgrade – it is a breakthrough,” says Thierry Lhotte, Massey Ferguson’s managing director for Europe and the Middle East. “The MF TH Series is completely transformed. Now equipped with a high comfort cab, this new generation delivers outstanding comfort and control, combined with smoother operation and additional automation.” As well as a new seat and new colour display, a new joystick offers enhanced operation of the hydraulics and transmission. Additional automation – for the boom suspension, parking brake, boom height and third hydraulic function controls – further ease operation. All models are powered by

BP’s Port of Ipswich is again the UK’s number one facility for the export of agricultural products – ahead of London, Bristol and Southampton. The Suffolk port shipped 516,000 tonnes of agricultural products last year, according to the government’s latest freight statistics. This represents 21% of agricultural products exported by UK ports in 2020. London exported 500,000 tonnes. ABP said the Port of Ipswich’s performance – including grain exports – reflected its key location at the heart of the Suffolk and Essex farming community; and the role of East Anglia as the ‘bread basket’ of the UK. Ipswich is also the fifth busiest port in the UK overall for both im-
ports and exports of agricultural products. It plays a key role in supporting supply chains that include aggregates and cement for the construction industry.
