Make the most
of warmer weather and longer days this Summer, as there is so much to see and do here in West Suffolk. We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful festivals, exhibitions, venues and tourist attractions to choose from - and that’s only set to increase in July with the re-opening of the beautiful and historic Guildhall in Bury St Edmunds. Did you know the first written reference to the Guildhall dates back to 1279, and it’s the oldest continuously used civic building in Britain? Other highlights to look out for this Summer include the fourth annual Dragon Fest at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, including the return by public demand of Epico the Dragon. The Dragon Fest really is a great family day out, so don’t miss it! Also, do look out for the Marilyn Monroe: Timeless exhibition at Moyse’s Hall
Museum, which opens in early June. This is a remarkable and iconic exhibition of photographs from some of the 20th Century’s greatest photographic artists, including rare vintage photographs and limited edition prints celebrating the remarkable life and career of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe. This year it’s Bury St Edmunds’ turn to host Armed Forces Day. We’ll be celebrating the wonderful work of our Armed Forces with a free family-friendly event in the beautfil setting of the Abbey Gardens. NOW IN ITS fourth year, the Dragon Fest is a family fun event packed with all things dragon, from dinosaurs to folklore. This year promises to be the best ever, with Epico the Dragon returning by popular demand for both days of the festival after stunning performances in 2016. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND DRAGON FEST?
Throughout history, dragons have been part of folklore and legends, with most cultures having their own interpretations of these beasts. Britain, with its diverse history, has a tradition of dragons stemming from Saxon, Celtic and Norse influences, as well as those from further afield. The image of the dragon has long prevailed and is still the star of film and books to this day! The Anglo-Saxons used the style of the dragon and serpents (wyrm)
in their own art and designs, examples of these can be seen in the village and museum. People believed in dragons as powerful magic creatures who would keep away evil spirits.

Explore Brandon Country Park with well-marked trails… REDWOOD TRAIL
A simple 1 mile circular route around the heart of the park. This easy-going trail is great for all visitors - a great pushchair walk and suitable for allterrain wheelchairs. Stroll past thickets of Bamboo, to the edge of the wider forest, the lawn and pond, and spot muntjac deer, birds and squirrels.
FOREST & HEATH TRAIL
A 3.5 mile circular route through the arboretum and magnificent Beech Avenue, past the orchard, and deeper into Thetford Forest with its acres of evergreen Scots Pine plantation and open glades. Look out for buzzards soaring in the air above, listen out for green woodpeckers or barking muntjac deer, and at dusk hear the resident tawny owls.

Venture along over 6 miles of winding woodland paths and wide forest tracks, and discover the deeper beauty of the forest with forest clearings, dense undergrowth and open glades. IN JULY, Bury St Edmunds has the honour of hosting the 2018 British Firefighter Challenge. Charity registered in England & Wales (1093387) and Scotland (SC040096)
The British Firefighter Challenge is an annual sporting BURY ST EDMUNDS | SUFFOLK | 9AM 6PM event which pushesfirefi ghters to their limits, provides a day of entertainment for spectators, and raises funds for the Firefighters Charity.
This year, 240 fire fighters from all over the world will compete in gruelling challenges include a stair ascent, hose haul, stair descent, hose drag and a casualty rescue. In addition to the firefighter challenge, you can be sure both days will packed with lots of entertainment for spectators, including a junior course firefighter challenge for kids, face painting, vintage fire engines and food stalls. Come along and enjoy the fun around the arc shopping centre and car park on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 July. The challenges and fun and games will take place on both days between 9am and 6pm. SnOW in ! e n ju Well-known historian and BBC TV presenter, Dan Snow, AKA 'The History Guy', will share some memorable experiences from his career plus his historical discoveries about Bury St Edmunds, at The Apex on 26 June. Dan presented the BAFTA award winning TV series 'Battlefield Britain' with his father, Peter Snow. He has also presented shows such as 'Armada', 'Grand Canyon' and 'Vikings', and anniversary programmes commemorating the Battle of Britain and the Gallipoli landings. He currently has a history slot on 'The One Show' and hosts the podcast, 'Dan Snow’s History Hit'. We asked Dan about the motivation behind doing his first live tour; "When you’re making television and podcasts, it’s very lonely. You sit by yourself and think, “Is anyone watching?” Doing live events at book festivals and book launches is a huge treat because you get to meet

people. It’s an enormous boost to the confidence to know there are people out there following what you do!" Do members of the public help with your research? "They do. I get lots of messages on my Facebook page. There is so much history out there and I find the stories that people send me fascinating. I am really looking forward to interaction with the audiences at my shows and a large chunk of the show will be about local history. It will have direct relevance to the place we’re in." Do you hope to captivate audiences with your infectious enthusiasm for your subject? "Yes! History is not all about dead kings, old libraries and dust. It’s everything. It’s why we are who we are. I hope people walk out of the theatre saying that they had a really good time. I also hope they leave having thought deeply about the past of their town, their country and their world."
Can you explain your passion for history? "I love history. It’s everywhere. It’s everything that ever happened to anyone who has ever lived on this planet." What do you think are the benefits of studying history? "We can all do it at any time. It’s not like physics where you need a $300 billion particle accelerator in the house to become an expert! I’m never bored on a train journey - every place has a history. I just love this country wherever you go in Britain, there are so many stories." History has become fashionable again, hasn’t it? "I think in the 1990s people thought that history was “finished”. But 9/11 changed all that. It was a huge wakeup call. It reminded everyone that many people around the world felt that history was not finished. They felt enormous resentment about the fact that some people thought that the hands of history had stopped."
Does studying history also help us to understand more about the present day? "Definitely. If you’re curious about the world today, history can help you understand it. Why can’t you book a boozy holiday in Somalia? That is down to history. The country’s instability is the result of colonial interference, food scarcity and the interference of America. In the same way, why can’t you go to a pub in Armagh and sing “God Save the Queen” without being glassed, while 20 miles away it would be fine. It gives things a real sense of perspective and makes you realise that we are so lucky to be alive today."

Armed Forces Day is a celebratory family fun day and a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. There will be lots of activities for all the family including historic re-enactments, storytelling, military vehicles, arts and crafts and live music. One of the many highlights of the day will be a low level flypast by a World War II Hurricane fighter. Alongside the Spitfire, the Hurricane was the workhorse flown by those brave RAF pilots, who Churchill nicknamed ‘The Few’ during the Battle of Britain. The roar of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine is guaranteed to give you goose bumps as it flies over the Abbey Gardens. Further activities throughout the day will also include living history re-enactments from throughout the ages, including the Norwich & Norfolk Medieval Association, the 95th
Rifles Living History Society and the Suffolk Regiment Living History Society. For those of you with children who have energy to burn, there we will also be a climbing wall and fun fair rides as well as less strenuous activities such as face painting and arts and crafts activities. Live music will be provided by Haverhill Silver Band, the Sea Cadets band and Bury St Edmunds Concert Band. There will also be plenty of historical exhibitions and military vehicles on show and a range of refreshment stalls from tea and cakes to pizza and hamburgers.

Distinguished Scottish singersongwriter, Dougie MacLean (8 July) has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. His songs have been covered by the likes of Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald and Ronan Keating, and you'll have heard his music in films such as Last of the Mohicans and T2 Trainspotting. The Bratislava Hot Serenaders (15 July) are a 21-piece ensemble, complete with the wonderful Serenaders Sisters. These outstanding musicians play vintage music from the 1920s and 30s, from the likes of Duke Ellington, early Basie, Jack Hylton and Carroll Gibbons orchestras. Renegade Twelve (4 August) play melodic metal inspired by Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera and Slash. The band's debut album boasts ten tracks that burst with rock driven riffs, rich vocals and face melting solos. Just Push Play 4 on 5 August is a fundraising gig in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care with The Bad Flowers, Druids, Amethysts, In My Disguise, The Fretz and Circadian.

FIRST WORLD WAR TRAIL PIGEONS, A TRENCH AND A BURSTING SHELL.
These make up the first pieces of artwork that have been created for a First World War trail in Bury St Edmunds. And with 15 more to come it’s set to be a major attraction for the town over the coming months and at the same time raise money for the My WiSH Charity’s Every Heart Matters appeal which has a target of £500,000 to help create a cardiac unit at the West Suffolk Hospital. Similar to the successful Wolf Trail of 2015, the latest venture is set to depict memories, items and images of the 1914-1918 conflict, from a tank to a Zeppelin and peace bells to a Victoria Cross. The trail will run from July 21 to Armistice Day on November 11.

Engineering artist Den Humphrey, who is based in Gosfield, near Halstead, has created a serpentine trench made of oak which is set to be displayed in the Abbey Gardens. It will be 4ft high and up to 20ft long and features wooden poppies of between 200mm and 700mm in diameter. People will be able to purchase poppies from the My WiSH charity and have them engraved with their loved one’s names and the poppies will be displayed on the bench for the duration of the trail and then returned to the purchasers for them to keep thereafter. He is also making an additional poppy bench and table plus a large oak remembrance book for the trail. Nigel Kaines, who runs Designs on Metal, from his workshop in Ixworth Road, Stowlangtoft, has collaborated with Chris Carroll-Davis to produce “Shell Shock”.
It is a sculpture which uses rusted steel rods and a contorted steel plate combined with hot, bright pieces of stained glass, depicting a stylized shell explosion. His iconic piece highlights the damage which was done to so many people during the First World War by mental trauma. And pigeons, which carried a massive amount of information during the First World War, are to be commemorated on how more than 100,000 of them were used during the war with an astonishing success rate of 95% getting through to their destination with their message. It’s being created by Michelle Freeman, who runs the Crafty Foxes, and features up to 30 of the birds cut out of discarded LPs and fixed onto a 2 x 1 metre copper metal plate. The Shell Shock design
It will then be displayed on a wall in the bar of LPs, on the corner of Woolhall Street and St Andrews Street South, with the records supplied by the club’s owner Mike Garling, who is also sponsoring the artwork. The first few pigeons will be cut away from the records to look as if they are flying out of it. The My WiSH Charity’s World War 1 trail is being supported by Our Bury St Edmunds, the Business Improvement District in the town and the local branch of the Royal British Legion. At the culmination of the trail an auction will take place to sell off all of the pieces to go to the Every Heart Matters appeal.

The West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is investing £5.2m in developing a state of the art cardiac suite that will provide quicker access to more treatments, but the £500,000 My WiSH Charity is hoping to raise will lead to the whole unit, which is currently fragmented on different floors, being brought together in one purpose-built centre. The trail is to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1 and is aimed at creating community involvement My WiSH fundraising manager Sue Smith said: “It’s going to be very exciting, it’s going to be bringing the community back together again and it’s going to allow our younger generation to become more aware of the First World War and what it means today, which I think is extremely important.” And Mark Cordell, chief executive of Ourburystedmunds, said: “We wanted to build on the success of the Wolf Trail in 2015 which brought in over 15,000 people into the town and we wanted to do something similar and raise funds for a local charity.

Bury St Edmunds may be known as the home of one of the UK’s biggest names in pubs and brewing, Greene King, but there is much more to this market town for real ale and craft beer enthusiasts to discover. And to help them do just that, Our Bury St Edmunds has launched the town centre’s first official Ale Trail. Featuring 20 of the town’s licensed premises, the trail gives people a chance to try ales brewed in the town itself or from further afield. A special map and brochure, giving information about all the participating venues, was officially launched – and the trail declared open – in February at the recently reopened One Bull pub on Angel Hill. Since then, the Ale Trail has proven so popular that the brochure has already had a second print run! The Ale Trail was the idea of Our Bury St Edmunds Director Heather Warren who owns Oakes Barn pub on St Andrews Street South. She’s worked closely with Our Bury St Edmunds Business Support and Marketing Officer Mike Kirkham to bring the concept to fruition. Heather said: “As the proprietor of one of the town’s
Free Houses I know that there is a growing interest in both real ale and craft beer. Bury St Edmunds has a great brewing heritage of course which many will be aware of, but that’s only part of the story. The Old Cannon microbrewery in the town is one of around 40 small breweries in the county and many beers brewed in Suffolk can be bought in Bury either in the retail trade or in some of our pubs. One of Suffolk’s leading Tourist attractions with - HISTORY! KENTWELL is not a ‘stately home’ but
very much a lived-in and loved historic Tudor family home, something it has been for over 500 years. The public see much of the house, including rooms used by the family - usually with obvious signs of use. Visitors approach Kentwell via a three quarter mile avenue of ancient Lime Trees that was created in 1678. Kentwell is immediately in front of you in all its grandeur, and is set in its own beautiful gardens and grounds of nearly thirty acres. Kentwell Hall was bought by the current owners Mr & Mrs Patrick Phillips in 1971, and ever since, the joke has been that Kentwell is the longest DIY project ever! During the early days, the house was opened to the public to help raise funds for its restoration. Kentwell is now recognised as a leader in Historic Re-creations; and in particular known for its Tudor Living History events that are held throughout the year. Kentwell was this year nominated for the 2017/2018 School Travel Awards for the Best Heritage Venue, a reward in itself for Kentwell’s ongoing ideology to remain at the forefront in this area.

Kentwell’s re-creations of everyday Tudor Life celebrate their 40th year this year. When Kentwell started domestic Living History it was then unheard of. They were trailblazers and had an immediate response from schools. Some criticised them for Disney-ing a Historic House. Yet after a number of years other venues followed suit. Since it started as primarily an event for schools the Kentwell Tudor Re-Creations have attracted well over half a million schoolchildren. There’s scarcely a child who went to Primary or Middle School in the region during the 1980s and 1990s that did not have a school trip or visit to a Re-Creation as a child. At the same time the ReCreations have always been open at weekends for the general public and tens of thousand have visited then.
Tudor Ice House located next to the Walled Garden and opposite the Sunken Garden, or just wonder at the Sculptured Cedar Tree based on the Tower of Babel. As a multi-event venue Kentwell is also home to one of the UK’s Top Scare attractions; Scaresville ‘The Haunted Village’ now in its twelfth year and a 2018 nominee for ‘Best Multi Part Scream Event’. The winners will be announced at the prestigious ScareCon awards ceremony in May.
Kentwell continues to adapt to visitor and school requirements and because of their uniqueness have seen an increase in Learning Outside the Classroom which encourages ‘children’ to get outdoors. With this in mind, Kentwell has extended the Story Book Adventure Trail which now includes nineteen stories and unique characters. The enormous ‘Crunching Munching Caterpillar’ is a 6.5yd long caterpillar cut into a box hedge, while the ‘Gorilla who wanted to Grow Up’ is a magnificent 6ft high metal sculpture.
Kentwell Hall is open throughout the year, with a full calendar of events including Tudor Re-Creations, a Children’s Magic Weekend, and Kentwell’s School of Sorcery - one of the most popular events..
But as with any event Kentwell presents, there is always uniqueness and this thinking is seen in many other ways around the stunning and beautiful gardens and grounds. A recent visitor commented “there’s a wonderful treat behind every door and every corner at Kentwell”. It could be the two dimensional brick paved Maze in front of the house, to the re-instated large

During the lighter Summer months, Opera Brava will perform at Kentwell, with a full cast, live orchestra, and wonderful stage sets on the lawns, with the house beautifully illuminated as a backdrop. To celebrate 100 years of women first gaining the right to vote, throughout 2018 Ickworth will be exploring the role of Theodora, the 4th Marchioness of Bristol â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whose vision, passion and commitment helped to seal the future of the Ickworth Estate we experience today. Theodora attended the coronations of both George V and George VI, and after vital conservation work on them Ickworth will be displaying her coronation robes for the first time in June. As we move into the summer months, Living History days will capture

a glimpse into the past with a day in the life of our 1930s servants quarters’. There is also a chance to join our Living History Cooks for a workshop in June and August to learn about their work and make some tasty treats to take home. Families will be able to enjoy Ickworth’s first ever Country Estate Fayre on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July. The Fayre will be a chance to celebrate traditions and country skills from the estate and region. With a variety of stallholders, delicious food on offer, live music, storytelling and 1930s entertainment, there is something for the whole family! Back by popular demand, Ickworth will also be hosting an open-air cinema in June, showing some family classics and strong female led films to continue the celebration of women and their role on the estate. Throughout the summer, Ickworth welcomes outdoor theatre productions to perform in the historic Italianate garden, with the Rotunda as a stunning backdrop. Performing at Ickworth for the first time, The HandleBards - the world's first cycling theatre company and all-female troupe, will transform Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’ into an evening of riotous energy and a great deal of chaos and laughter. The criticallyacclaimed Pantaloons will also be back 50
to present their innovative and hilarious open-air version of Shakespeare's classic comedy ‘As You Like It’, with folky, foot-stomping live music and their own inimitable brand of buffoonery. Ickworth is the perfect place to entertain the children this summer holidays with a chance to get creative with children’s crafts, and explore the outdoors with activities throughout those long summer days.
