BRANCASTER BEACH

For nature lovers who enjoy the outdoors, the National Trust runs lots of free events over the summer. Wild Wednesdays at Brancaster Beach is a day packed with activities including kite flying, stone skimming, tracking wild animals, building sandcastles and bug hunting. Meet at Brancaster Beach

(PE31 8AX) and look out for flags and staff. Running Wednesdays from 25 July. On Tuesdays (from 31 July) there are the Terrific Tuesdays events at Blakeney Quay. Learn how to catch and hold a crab, check out birdlife and explore the grassland at Friary Hills.

Summer Days at Pensthorpe Natural Park is running throughout the school summer holidays with lots of exciting activities such as craft making, pond dipping and den building. Activities are included in general admission price. Running from 25 July to 5 Sep 2018, 10:00 - 17:00.

For budding farmers, take the Field to Fork Tractor Trailer Tour at Holkham Hall and find out exactly where your food comes from. Travel back in time as you visit the Great Barn and fast forward to the present day and discover the conservation work Holkham undertakes and how the crops and livestock change through the seasons. Of course, summer means the carnival and festival season has arrived in north Norfolk. Holt Festival (21 to 29 July) kicks off the summer by becoming home to street performers, musicians, poets, actors, dancers, artists and comedians. Wells Carnival, (27 July to 5 August) promises a week of family fun and events including a sand-castle competition, gillying on the quay and a Carnival Day procession around the town.

Worstead Festival (29 July) is a fun weekend of rural crafts, shows and lots of family activities. Sheringham Carnival is next on the calendar (29 July to 5 August). The carnival has been running for over 50 years and is a fun time for all the family. Next up is Cromer Carnival, 11-18 August with children’s entertainment, live music, rides and local food, culminating in a spectacular Carnival Parade.

And the carnival season is topped off with the World Pier Crabbing Championships (26 August) on Cromer Pier with a prize for the team who catches the most crabs!

If you fancy a journey back in time, hop aboard the Cowhand Express with North Norfolk Railway (3 August at 18:00). Take the train from Sheringham to Holt where you can try line dancing, watch shows and test your Cowhand Skills.

In 2018, the Blickling Proms will celebrate 100 Years of the RAF and so the National Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the Rolls-Royce Spitfire and The Aerosparx Display Team. Classic Ibiza (10 August), Norfolk’s biggest dance party of the summer, will feature The Urban Soul Orchestra for a performance of classic Ibiza anthems under the stars, with live DJ and vocalists.

PENSTHORPE NATURAL PARK

Cromer’s Amazona Zoo is home to over 200 animals from tropical South America, including jaguars, monkeys, parrots, snakes, flamingos and tapirs.

Miss Saigon is set to wow theatre-goers during its summer visit. Company manager Neil White gave John Bultitude a tour backstage for a taste of what is in store.

For generations of theatre-goers, Miss Saigon is a definite must-see. The heart-rending story of a love affair between an American GI and the woman he meets in a seedy Vietnamese bar has moved people across the UK and worldwide.

Cameron Mackintosh’s juggernaut of a musical arrives at Norwich Theatre Royal this summer from August 15 to September 15 and the impresario has made sure the story has incredible emotional impact thanks to casting, stunning sets, and a hugely talented technical team who bring the moving story to life.

Getting the opportunity to explore the stage and set before a performance is a real bonus as it gives the chance to experience the effort and prep that goes into each show.

Teams are ensuring every prop and piece of set is ready for the performance while the sound and lighting teams are checking that everything is absolutely as it should be in an atmosphere mixing the professional and the jovial.

The first thing that strikes you is the attention to detail. With the story of Chris the GI at the core of the musical, the first thing you notice are the transatlantic touches.

Company manager Neil White said: “You see little hints of New York and America everywhere. It is a completely immersive world.”

As you would expect, the Far East influences are also very strong to link in with the Saigon background and Chris’s torrid (and all-too-short) passionate relationship with Kim. Her mirror as seen in the show has I Am Beautiful written on it in Vietnamese. “Our production designer Totie Driver’s mum used to ask her to say ‘I am beautiful’ every morning so that is why it is on the mirror. There is just so much detail everywhere,” said Neil.

The heady mix of the neon and the traditional is particularly noticeable as you

examine the set used for scenes in Bangkok where the props include cigarettes, insects that look good enough to eat (if you are in a Far East food market) and even a banana tree.

The props are just incredible. There are plates of fake food for a traditional Vietnamese wedding, plus passports and visa forms packed with detail. Each cast-member has their own pouch packed with props for the opening scene in Dreamland. Neil laughed: “There is one here, for example, with an e-cigarette, money, coins, two loose notes and a bag of drugs. In fact we even have pouches with some spare fake cocaine bags if you need it.”

Next stop is the quick-change area where there are racks and racks of costumes.

Because some of the scene changes are so fast, there is no time for the company to head back to their dressing rooms and so they quickly don the outfits for the next scene backstage. Authenticity is key for the GI’s uniforms, as Neil explains. “All the hats and the army gear have been imported. Most of these were actually worn in action. Ashley, who plays Chris, wears one that has got a bullet mark on it.”

Meanwhile the female company have everything from lavish dresses to some bikinis complete with a kilo and a half

of beads on them, plus shoes which are individually made for each cast member.

The wig team is also busy particularly with a couple of key cast as Neil explains. “The character of Kim, who Chris falls for, has nine hair changes through the show. Red, who plays The Engineer who you first see running Dreamland also has a major hair change. He is imprisoned for three years and has to come out of jail looking very dishevelled.”

Even looking above the stage, you can see the likes of a Ho Chi Minh statue and the head of the Statue of Liberty which end up being part of the set.

Neil believes the clever design and lighting helps to move the audience through the journey of the characters. “You get these massive numbers and then a lot of it is quite quiet and intimate,” he said.

“One of the other amazing things about it is that the show does not stop at the proscenium arch. Extra detail is built and designed for Norwich and every other theatre on the tour so everyone can completely enter the Miss Saigon world. The whole experience is just bursting with this attention to detail.”

For people who saw the original production which ran so successfully in London’s West End, this version has a very different feel. “This production is much darker. When you go to Dreamland, for example, you really feel like you are in a dirty, sleazy bar,” said Neil.

An hour later, it is time to see the show.

Without giving too much away, you can see the result of the hard work and dedication of every member of the Miss Saigon team.

Every single detail of the show from the strong set-pieces to the moving intimate moments is absolutely perfect and shows why, for Cameron Mackintosh and his large hugely-talented team, Miss Saigon truly will be a case of a West End-calibre show coming to Norfolk.

New chapter

for Trust’s book collection A five-year National Trust conservation

project at one of the nation’s most important historic house libraries has inspired awardwinning Theatre Company Les Enfants Terribles to explore the importance of books through contemporary art.

Les Enfants Terribles will bring sound, theatrical design and storytelling to Blickling Estate in Norfolk to examine the importance of books, and prompt debate about the threat posed to them and their place in a changing world.

The Word Defiant! is a series of installations throughout the Jacobean mansion and out to the garden Temple that will reveal stories of books that have been banned, burned, redacted, drowned, neglected and superseded, with each linked to the theme of books under threat.

The inspiration for the installations comes from the books in Blickling’s own library which is currently undergoing a comprehensive five year conservation programme to ensure its survival, after being plagued by damp and death watch beetle for some years.

One of the installations will feature a cascade of books flowing from the bookcases and across the Long Gallery which houses the library to draw visitors’ attention to this nationally important collection and its ongoing need for conservation.

As visitors weave their way further through the mansion, they will experience more installations that tell the stories of books under threat around the globe.

Outside, an abstract decorative scheme in the garden Temple will draw attention to the

neglect of old, out of print or archived books.

John Orna-Ornstein, Director of Curation and Experience for the National Trust, said: “Sharing our heritage is not only about telling the stories of our past but finding ways to inspire people of all ages to see the importance of preserving it for future generations. The Word Defiant! is a bold, creative and really thought-provoking way to bring Blickling’s historic library to life for visitors, while shining a light on the conservation challenges such an important collection presents.”

is a Dutch pop and jazz singer She debuted under the stage name “Caro Emerald” in July 2009. The award-winning pop-jazz singer and style icon famous for her 1940s and ‘50s Hollywood glamour and chart topping hits that include A Night Like This and Back it up.

The words the gem stone experts apply to an emerald of the highest quality. I’m about to learn that the words also apply to the precious stone’s namesake, Caro Emerald.

Caro Emerald says ‘Hello? Pete?’ at exactly the appointed time. And we waste no time in getting down to talk. High on the agenda is her new UK tour which kicks off at The Regent Theatre, Ipswich, on October 5.

‘I can’t wait’ she says. When I ask her what she likes most about touring she says ‘There’s no one single thing’, and she laughs, ‘but what I love is that it’s like a school trip. Everything is arranged for me, I get to go to different places, have fun, sing - and I get paid!’

for a moment and says, ‘well, I can’t answer that as a straight comparison. First, I can’t have one without the other. The songs I record form the material for the concerts. But, truthfully, when you put a show together, choose the songs, organize it all and then go out and do it, it’s great. Forty or so shows later you do kind of welcome the chance to be back in the studio for a while. But I love them both’.

It’s because as much as she loves performing, the recording studio is important to Caro Emerald. It’s vital to the process. As we talk about how her music is created she explains, ‘It’s really not all about me. This is a collective. My writers and producers come up with ideas, and we develop

them. We use samples for instance, not necessarily from other people’s work but from sessions we’ve recorded. We might take just a few seconds from one of those and build it into the mix of a track’.

Her voice changes slightly.

There’s an added intensity to it as she expands on how her sound is created. This is the talk of a woman who has music deep in her soul. Referring to a song that was vital in establishing her she says, ‘So, for instance, ‘Back it Up’ is a difficult song to sing on stage. We put that together using all sorts of techniques. That little bit of piano sample that comes in on the offbeat, the layers of the track - they make it complicated’.

But, I point out, this collective work, using technology to build up tracks, somehow sounds fresh and natural when she performs it. ‘Thank you’ she replies, ‘that’s so nice to hear, because we really do try to achieve that. It would be easy to perform my material in an old school kind of way. But that would miss the fusion of all the styles I love’.

Ask her, as I do, about her influences and the names, some more of a surprise than others, come tumbling out. Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Eva Cassidy, Nora Jones. When I pursue the point, asking who was the main influence and the single most important influence she says she couldn’t pin it down to one person - which is perhaps the point. But, she says, her inspiration comes from ‘people who can somehow make jazz work in the mainstream, because I didn’t think it was possible. But it is.’

It so is. In fact, Caro Emerald has proved that quite a lot is possible really.

In 2007, as a 25 year old she’d sung the vocal on Dutch producer Jan van Wieringen’s demo track that was being turned down by labels everywhere. By 2008, via exposure on YouTube, the track, ‘Back it Up’, was central to the idea of an album. Suddenly this jazzy, Latin based with a dash of Andrews Sisters, sound seemed like a good idea.

Fast forward to August 2011. Her album, “Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room’ is in the Top Ten. And it’s in good company. Sharing the honours, and top ten, at that point are albums by Beyonce, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga which is quite a list of ladies.

Not that Caro is a stranger to big gigs. She played the opening set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2014.

And 2016 saw her play the Colours of Ostrava Festival which The Guardian rates as one of the top ten music festivals in Europe. It’s no surprise that she’s also appeared on TV with that arbiter of taste, Jools Holland.

You may have heard her on TV too.

Which is even more testament to how her music just fits modern life. It’s part of our soundtrack.

None of that though can compare with Caro on stage. Live. This is the art of performing with a capital A. For Art. Because her delivery, phrasing and sheer style are breathtaking. The technology only serves to heighten the texture and complexity of her work. When she’s singing you’re drawn in to a place where jazz might be working in the mainstream but you’re witnessing a performance that’s rooted in the same unfathomably cool place that only the greats have inhabited.

As we talk of her recording and touring schedule I feel bound to ask if she ever does get any time off. And if she does how does she spend it. She laughs. ‘I have kids, so there’s most of the answer right there. But, really, I just like to be around family and friends, have nice meals, chill. Nothing special’.

Except you can hear in her voice that it is special. Family and friends time.

No hobbies or pastimes then I say.

Nothing that’s in that favourite question of interviewers - tell me something about you that nobody knows.

‘Ha!’ comes the reply. ‘I can’t say that nobody knows it because I have owned up to it before but one thing I love doing is number puzzles. You know? Those really nerdy ones. Not simple word searches, but seriously geeky number based puzzles. I do them every chance I get’.

I didn’t see that coming. But maybe I should have. Because music is all about numbers. The counting, the timing, the structure. Mathematicians often make great musicians.

Put that innate grasp of number and timing together with a stunning style and look, add an inspired, intelligent, choice of material and mix in a gifted song stylist’s phrasing and delivery and you’ve got something special.

You’ve got Caro Emerald. Dazzling, accomplished and outstanding.

Or to put it another way.

A Norfolk rite of passage, a trip to Blakeney Point offers a rare opportunity to get within a whisker’s breadth of the resident grey and common seal colonies without causing disturbance. WRIGHTS MOTORS has a long and illustrious history,

dating back to 1927, when Robert Wright started to sell and repair bicycles in Lowestoft. As times moved on, he started to sell motor bikes, even supplying the local police force, until he handed over the reins to his son, John, and his wife Joy in the 1960s.

With car sales taking over, John took on the Honda and Toyota dealerships, expanding to Great Yarmouth and Norwich. This lead to a focus on Mazda at Lowestoft and Norwich.

Now Gordon, grandson and son of John, is company director and he has overseen a move to a purpose-built showroom in Beccles, in Common Lane North, from Lowestoft. The Norwich site, on Cromer Road, remains. The Beccles site includes a large and airy showroom, a comfortable customer and reception area with WiFi and refreshments, a state-of-the-art service and repair workshop and a large car display area.

‘We have been at Beccles since 2011,’ says Gordon, whose wife Debbie also works at the dealership. ‘It is a great spot and we have so many repeat customers, around 70 per cent. We know most of them by name and they know they can trust us.’

His son, Danny, is general manager while his daughter, Holly, looks after marketing. And there are several long-serving members of staff including Graham Walpole and Garret Knowles in sales and Martin Gooda and Rachel Earl in the service department. Russell Whyte, Gordon’s brother-in-law, manages the Norwich branch.

The company knows that it has to continue to develop so they are expanding their used car business at their Beccles site to now include all makes of second hand cars.

The company also holds the Mazda franchise for the area. ‘We are ranked fourth in the national dealer league for them,’ says Gordon, with pride.

Danny says: ‘People know and trust the Mazda make – they know they get value for money.

When asked what the secret to the company’s success is, Gordon smiles and says: ‘It must be the friendliness of the staff. We treat people as we want to be treated ourselves. We’re not pushy, we look after people as individuals.’

ADAM HENSON is perhaps the best-known farmer in the UK, presenting his own section on BBC TV’s Countryfile to around 7 million viewers every Sunday evening. As well as his TV work Adam is a farming expert, with more than 50 flocks of rare breed animals at his Cotswolds home from which he often broadcasts.

Growing up on the Cotswold Hills as a farmer’s son was a great start to life and it spurred his enthusiasm to become a farmer. The site near Cheltenham, which launched in 1971, now attracts 70,000 visits a year and in 2014 won Farm Attraction of the Year.

Places&Faces® caught up with Adam ahead of his appearance at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds where he will be telling stories about his farming life, his TV career and his thoughts on British Agriculture.

We met up with Adam and asked him about the show…

I will be talking about my life on the land and growing up on the farm, my father’s work in rare breed conservation and opening the Cotswold Farm Park. I will also be telling stories of using animals in films and my work for the BBC. Sounds great! Will the audience be able to ask questions?

There is often a chance for Q&A’s after my talk and I always try to meet people after the show when I do a book signing.

Is it hard to juggle a career in the media with the gruelling schedule of a working farmer? How do you strike the balance between the two?

I still consider myself a farmer, although the media does take up a huge amount of my time. Life is a continual juggling act but I have surrounded myself with a very capable team who look after the farm and Cotswold Farm Park in my absence. I share the business with a good friend, Duncan Andrews, who holds the helm very steady.

What are the most important jobs on the farm?

Working with livestock, crops and the general public is all about attention to detail and high standards. Every job we do is important but busy times of the year are lambing, harvest and for the Cotswold Farm Park the Easter and summer holidays.

Does the life of a British farmer differ from those in Europe and farmers further afield? If so, how?

I am sure that the life of farmers world-wide has a huge amount of similarities as we all strive to produce good quality food. However, depending on the climate, soil type and politics of each country, there is also a wide variance.

The popularity of Countryfile has progressed from strength to strength – what do you feel is the reason for its growing appeal?

Taking Countryfile from Sunday lunchtime to Sunday evening has made a huge difference to the weekly viewing figures, which are now regularly well over 7 million. I think that the general public love to see our beautiful British countryside and all the fascinating things going on within it…. real stories about real lives.

Is there anything particularly special about farming in the Cotswolds? How does it differ there to other parts of the UK? We are fortunate that the Cotswolds has gentle rolling hills, with reasonably fertile soil and a kind climate. In comparison to the mountains of Wales, Cumbria and Scotland, our terrain means we have a number of farming options, from livestock to arable.

Of all the issues facing farmers at the moment, which is the most significant and the one most likely to cause a problem for you in future?

With Brexit just around the corner, the unknown political change is hugely significant and if it isn’t managed well could present some major challenges in the future.

What advice would you give to young farmers starting out in an agricultural career?

If you consider British agriculture as the whole food supply chain, there are some incredibly rewarding jobs out there. I would urge young people to study hard, as farming has become much more technological and business minded. It is important to remain flexible and adjust to make the most out of the opportunities available.

The beach at Winterton-On-Sea is truly one of the jewels of the Norfolk coast. The wide and gently sloping sandy beach is ideal for picnics, sandcastles or just relaxing. A colony of around 30 to 40 seals also lives just north of Winterton so take your binoculars for a sighting.

Cley Beach

The beach at Cley-Next-The-Sea is about a mile away from the town and is accessed via beach road. It is a quiet beach backed by the nature reserve, which has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. Mostly made up of shingle Cley-Next-The-Sea beach is ideal for sunny summer evening picnics, sea fishing, early morning coastal walks and peace and quiet.

One of the largest, best preserved and most lavishly decorated keeps in England, surrounded by 20 acres of mighty earthworks.

In its long history, it’s been a hunting lodge, a royal residence and even housed Queen Isabella following her dastardly part in the murder of her husband, Edward II. Kids can explore the ramparts and search the horizon for enemy hordes. Then when the perimeter is safe, they’ll love tumbling down the grassy moat slope or listening out for the local grasshoppers. It’s a great spot for a picnic and watching the sun go down.

Whitlingham Country Park

At the eastern end of the country park you will find a children’s play area. There is also a large grass area for picnics on warm sunny days. The spot offers great views of the river Yare. Moving down to the Great Broad, fantastic views continue over the water with the Norwich skyline as a backdrop. This woodland and water park just southeast outside Norwich at Trowse is a great place to walk, cycle or bird watch. Built on the site of a quarry whose gravel was used for a number of major local construction projects, Whitlingham offers a full range of water-based activities, including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, rafting and canoeing.

The sweeping park that surrounds the hall is home to a large herd of Fallow Deer and a small herd of Red Deer that roam freely. The evergreen oaks (Quercus ilex) that are such a feature of the park, they are Mediterranean in origin and were brought to Holkham from Italy. Sit back and relax in the dappled sunlight and enjoy an Italian inspired lunch, you could be in the midst of the Tuscan Hills. There are designated walks which allow visitors to explore the 3,000-acres grounds and take a closer look at prominent landmarks, such as the monument to Coke of Norfolk and the obelisk.

Coltishall

Coltishall Common is one of the most picturesque spots in the whole of Broadland, also a great place to moor your boat. The staithe has a large area of grass that sweeps down to the River Bure and is an ideal place for a picnic.

Happisburgh

Happisburgh (pronounced Haysbrough) is most well-known for its striking red and white lighthouse. It is open at various times of the year and is the oldest working lighthouse in Britain. From a beautiful picnic spot on top of the cliffs you get an unspoilt view along the coast to Sea Palling.

Heydon Village Green

Heydon is one of the prettiest villages in Norfolk and is set in a corner of Heydon Hall Park. It is one of less than a dozen privately owned villages in Great Britain and became Norfolk’s first conservation area in 1971.

Heydon is also currently home to six County Wildlife Sites. Every summer the village hold a tug of war on the green which is not to be missed. Enjoy a picnic on the green surrounded by many historical buildings; why not take a pint out onto the green from The Earle Arms Pub too!

As pastimes go, you can’t get more British

than afternoon tea. Compared to our enduring love affair with the humble brew, afternoon tea is a relatively modern tradition, widely credited as being introduced in the 1840s by Her Grace Anna Maria, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. As dinner in her household was served fashionably late at around eight o’clock, the duchess (understandably) found she was getting peckish by mid-afternoon.

She therefore asked for a tray of tea, sandwiches and cake to be brought to her room at around four o’clock, which became a daily habit she soon invited friends to join her in.

This ‘pause for tea’ was quickly picked up by other hostesses and became a fashionable social event among the wealthy. Before long, come four

For me the summer is all about the sunshine, the vegetables, the seafood, everything this beautiful county has to offer.

I love sitting down with my young family, we put a big bowl of salad in the middle of the table filled with vegetables, pickled fruits, leaves, wonderful shellfish from our coastline and my personal favourite samphire.

This month we should utilise everything our beautiful county has to offer, get the family together in the garden on a big table with a couple of bottles of wine, music and the perfect summer salad for all the family to enjoy. A simple yet delicious recipe to end your summer on a high.

METHOD Pre heat your oven to 180°C Take your sliced courgette, mix with 2 tablespoons of Sea Salt and the cumin then leave to cure for 10 minutes. Rinse off and dry in a tea towel, once dry roll up your courgette to look like a rose using tooth picks to hold it together.

Place a pan on a medium heat with a splash of rapeseed oil, gently lay your courgette rose into the pan and lightly colour on both sides then cook in the oven for 5 minutes and it’s ready to serve.

INGREDIENTS • 1 Courgette (Sliced Length Ways) • 1 Pepper (Core Removed & Roughly Chopped) • 2 Garlic Cloves (Crushed) • 1 Handful of Mixed Salad Leaves

for the PEPPER PURÉE Place the chopped peppers, garlic and a good splash of rapeseed oil onto a large baking tray. Season lightly with salt and pepper then place into the oven for 25-35 minutes until the peppers are cooked with a light colour. Transfer into a blender and blitz until smooth, check the seasoning and keep warm until needed. for the DRESSING Mix the lemon juice with the oil and season with salt and pepper, spoon over the salad leaves just before serving.

TO SERVE Spoon a big spoonful of the pepper purée into the middle of the plate. Remove the toothpicks from the courgette, slice it in half and place onto the plate on one side of your pepper purée. Start to lay the rest of your salad components on the other side to make a full circle.

Serve with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc!

What is better on a hot summer’s afternoon than a refreshing chilled glass of lemonade?

Interestingly, the first written recipe for lemonade was found in Egypt in the Fourteenth Century that’s a long history of producing this classic summer drink and every country will have their own recipes and tricks for the best glass of zingy lemonade.

The recipe that I have created is super simple and delivers a sharp citrus hit that will suit all tastes.

Perfect to make as a pitcher for your summer BBQ or just for a treat at home.

TOP TIP Add our favourite Vodka for an adult twist

INGREDIENTS

SERVES ONE

• 8 x lemons • 200g caster sugar • 700ml Water • Soda or sparkling Water to finish • Lemon slices to garnish

TO MAKE THE COCKTAIL

Take your lemons and cut them in half.

Juice the lemons making sure to squeeze out every last drop. Put all your lemon juice into a large bowl. Add the water to the juice in the bowl. Add your caster sugar a 50g at a time and taste - until your preferred sweetness. Whisk all your ingredients together in the bowl until the sugar has dissolved into the liquid. Store in the fridge and keep for 3 days. Add a touch of soda water to top up your lemonade or enjoy still over ice.

The knee is the largest joint in the body, which provides stability and flexibility and allows your legs to bend and straighten. As a result, much strain is put on the knee area. Common knee injuries include sprains, strains, tendonitis, meniscal tears, fractures, kneecap dislocations, cartilage injuries, bursitis and repetitive stress disorders.

In activities such as walking, climbing stairs or running, nearly the whole weight of the body is carried by the knees. The knee is a tough joint that acts like a hinge between the thighbone and the shinbone but as well as bending and straightening, the knee joint allows rotation and pivoting making it one of the most complex joints in the body.

The action of twisting and turning puts a tremendous strain on the ligaments (bands of fibrous tissue connecting bones or cartilage and strengthening joints). Hence a common injury suffered by footballers is a ruptured ligament.

Of course, not just footballers suffer from injuring their knees.

Many injuries are caused by other competitive sports, in road accidents or in something as simple as a fall. If left untreated or wrongly managed, these problems can lead to permanent damage and accelerated wear and tear in the knee.

Treatment for knee injuries has many facets but tends to follow the path of clinical assessment, imaging and then conservative measures such as physiotherapy with weight reduction if needed to ease the load on the joint. Pain relief and anti-inflammatories can bring relief and if these are not sufficient there can be an option of steroid injections being given.

For many injuries the first surgical treatment is a knee “arthroscopy” which is used to treat cartilage tears, to reconstruct some ligament injuries, and sometimes to assess damage that can’t be seen on scans.

Arthroscopy is a “keyhole” operation that is performed through very small cuts in the skin, using a narrow, tube-like telescope called an arthroscope.

The procedure is usually performed as a day-case, meaning you’ll be able to go home on the same day.

Arthroscopic knee surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthesia, which means that you will be asleep during the procedure, or for some patients, spinal anaesthesia is preferable. This will completely block the feeling in your legs but you stay awake.

Your surgeon and anaesthetist will discuss with you which type of anaesthesia is most suitable in your case.

Your surgeon will also explain the benefits and risks of having a knee arthroscopy, and will discuss the alternatives to the procedure.

has become so damaged that it causes a lot of pain and disability. An artificial joint is inserted in its place relieving pain and restoring the lost function.

In the region of 70,000 knee joint operations are carried out in the UK each year, a number which rises annually. The surgical procedure of replacing a knee is now well established and performed regularly by Orthopaedic Surgeons at Spire Norwich Hospital.

Mr Ben Davis, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon explains, “When performed for the right reasons in the right patient, a knee replacement can restore patients to excellent mobility with very good pain relief. Complications are infrequent and the majority of people experience a vast improvement in their quality of life.”

During a knee replacement operation, the damaged or worn parts of the thigh and shin bones, which form the knee joint, are replaced with metal and plastic parts that glide over each other smoothly.

Knee replacement surgery can be performed under general, epidural or spinal anaesthesia. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will discuss this with you.

You will be in hospital until you are able to walk safely with the aid of sticks or crutches and Spire’s Specialist Physiotherapists will visit and work with you daily. Your stay will probably be around three days after your operation.

A new artificial knee joint should last well in excess of ten years, but as it is an artificial weight bearing surface, they do wear out eventually after which time the knee replacement may need to be replaced itself. Your surgeon will explain the benefits and risks of having your knee replaced, and will also discuss the alternatives to the procedure.

Should surgery not be required, physiotherapy may help speed the recovery of certain knee injuries. A structured programme of rehabilitation, supervised by a Specialist Physiotherapist, can be set up for you. For further information please contact Spire’s Physiotherapy Department on 01603 255587.

Lighting This month our resident interior design expert Julie Handforth-Doidge tells us that when you are trying to create the right atmosphere and ambience within a room lighting is fundamental.

SELECTING THE CORRECT table lamp can change

the whole feel of your room – so what is the first thing to consider to make sure you have the right size and shape lamp for your room. A large lamp with strong colours will create a real statement where a small neutral lamp will just blend into the background giving you a more subtle lit room.

It is important that the lamp you choose looks good during the day as well as night when it is lit. A carefully selected light will transform a corner of the room turning it into a cosy place of retreat adding warmth and character to your home.

Don’t rule out a feature floor lamp as used correctly they can add character to a room.

Three words come to mind when planning lighting for interior design:- Ambient...Task and Accent when trying to create the right atmosphere and ambience within a room lighting is fundamental.

Bright lights will more often than not make you feel alert and awake, softer lights are more relaxing. When planning, what activities take place within the room make sure you look around and see what features you wish to highlight.

Planning the style of lighting, possibly colour tones, dimmable lights. Get it right from the start in particularly with hard wiring.

It is much harder to change it once it has been installed. A lamp is easily moveable.

Make a room interesting take in its size and shape. Activities wise such as a kitchen and cooking you may wish to consider a more concentrated light such as down lights. Reading, consider a directional light, unobtrusive and less distracting to others around.

Remember that bulbs can make a difference to the type of lighting - try and use energy efficient bulbs in all circumstances.

A great selection are on offer these days Give some consideration to spotlights or accent lighting to focus on a feature wall. Bad lighting can make a room feel dated and create that unwelcome feel. Add a dimmer. This allows you to easily change the mood and brightness of your lighting depending on the time of day. Include at least three sources

of light in each room: general (overhead or pendant) lighting, specific (task or table) lighting, and ambient (sconces, candles or decorative) lighting and make sure you choose the right shade. White shades let more light through, but usually create a colder tone. Coloured shades will tint the light, making it appear creamier, warmer, or cooler depending on the hue you choose.

Before you get too concentrated on how the lampshade looks, don’t forget to look at the space it will go in. A bedside table lampshade could need a smaller profile if a bedside table is small or if there isn’t a lot of space to get in and out of the bed freely.

While a floor lamp next to a wingback chair may afford a wider profile for its placement in your living room.

New skids on the block Car manufacturers are facing quite a challenge, with new car registrations falling for the first time in six years in 2017. For most, that means innovation and a raft of new models to try and tempt buyers into showrooms, says David Wakefield.

WITH ONE EYE on those September 1 new plates, we are seeing yet more of the popular SUV models, with even small cars like the Kia Picanto getting a crossover version; plus investment in electric models. This is highly relevant as sales of cars eligible for the government’s plug-in grant rose 53.7% compared to the same month in 2016, measured against a drop in total car sales of 11.2%.

But fear not: There are still plenty of petrol and diesel models coming on line in the next 12 months, and here are just a few of those available to order for the new plates.

One of the most significant newcomers is, surely, the latest Ford Focus which appears this summer lighter and roomier, thanks for a longer wheelbase.

The all-new Ford Focus is on sale for September delivery, with all main models offering enhanced specification while being priced more competitively or at carryover levels. Prices start at £17,930 for the Focus Style – £2,300 below the model it replaces. Focus Zetec and ST-Line – together representing 55% of sales – are now £850 and £250 less respectively.

Also from Ford, the new Fiesta ST is available to order. The highly-anticipated hot hatch will cost from £18,995 in ST-1 trim, which features selectable drive modes – new to ST – as well as a flat-bottomed steering wheel, Recaro seats and ST sports suspension as standard.

All Fiesta ST models are also equipped with electric, heated door mirrors, Ford’s SYNC3 DAB radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, cruise control, and NCAP Pack, which includes Lane-Keeping Alert and speed limiter.

The SUV market is as strong as ever, and Skoda’s Karoq offers great value, comfort, and equipment in a crowded market.

The Karoq, which complements its larger sibling, the seven-seat Kodiaq, costs from £20,875, and is available in three trim levels, SE, SE L and Edition. Each grade offers a high specification and levels of in-car technology which, claims Skoda, makes it one of the safest and most advanced vehicles in the sector. It replaces the highly popular Yeti in the Skoda SUV line-up.

Audi has a lot going on, with a new version of the RS4 Avant, but it’s most significant freshen-up involves the A6 which gains many of the refinements up to now only available in the A8 flagship model. All engines in the A6 featured new mild-hybrid technology which enables the car to coast at speeds of between 34 and 99 mph and to initiate its start-stop function earlier.

Nissan’s increasing popular Leaf electric model gets a facelift with a more chic look, and a significant range upgrade to 235 miles, almost matching that achieved by the Renault Zoe; but, with five seats and larger boot, the Leaf will attract family buyers. The new model is also equipped with an e-pedal, which allows drivers to start, stop and accelerate, decelerate and stop, simply by increasing or decreasing the pedal pressure.

The tag GTI has been famously applied to various Volkswagen models over the years, and now the little up! is given the treatment.

This diminutive hot hatchback is offered in three- or five-door body styles with one, generous, level of specification. The up!

GTI is powered by the most potent petrol engine yet offered in the model range. Also new is the Volkswagen Polo GTI which gets the Golf GTI’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine; it’s slightly detuned to 197bhp and 236lb ft of torque but still strong enough to give the car a sub-7.0sec 0-62mph acceleration claim and top speed within a whisker of 150mph.

Finally, VW also has the latest version of its big Touareg off-roader which comes with an eight-speed automatic Tiptronic gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. In the UK, the car will initially be offered with a 286 PS 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel unit or, from the autumn, a 231 PS version of the same engine.

A 340 PS 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine will be available to order in the UK in late 2018, with deliveries beginning in 2019. In addition a plug-in hybrid drive with a system power of 367 PS is planned for the future.

Owning a new Toyota Hybrid becomes easier than ever before with two new models joining the Yaris Hybrid line-up. The addition of Active and Sport versions means there’s now a hybrid in all four grades in Toyota’s top-selling supermini range.

Active becomes the new entry point to the range. The five-door hatch comes equipped with dual-zone climate control, trip computer, power front windows and a split-folding rear seat.

What also comes as standard is the refined Toyota hybrid experience together with 75g/km CO2 emissions and official combined cycle fuel economy of 85.6mpg.

The low emissions mean no annual road tax (VED) to pay.

Honda’s CR-V ranks highly in the crossover section and a new version is available from August, with a hybrid version going on sale in December. Petrol models are available with seven seats for the first time, and increased wheelbase enables a more spacious interior without increasing overall length. First versions will have the 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo petrol engine.

Kia has a new version of the cee’d, now renamed as the Ceed, which may confuse some! It is the first Kia to offer lane following assist technology and also carries a big range of driver assistance systems.

Engines include the 140ps 1.4-litre T-GDi and efficient new ‘U3’ 1.6-litre diesel, and prices begin from £18,295.

Already here is the little Picanto X-Line, which further broadens the appeal of the genre’s city car, with design highlights from the Stonic, Sportage and Sorento models.

Prices start at £12,595 for the car equipped with the 1.25-litre petrol engine and five-speed manual gearbox, with a four-speed automatic transmission available for an additional £650. CO2 emissions that are as low as 106g/km on the manual transmission, and a combined fuel economy figure of 61.4mpg.

No-one can question the huge success

of the Ford Focus in the mid-range family car market. Just as Ford dominated with models like the Anglia and Escort, it did so with the Focus when it was launched back in the late 90s.

IT PAYS TO BE SMART ABOUT

INCOME TAX It is right and proper that we should all pay the tax that is due on our income. However within the tax rules there are a range of allowances and reliefs available. Carl Lamb looks at the benefits of good income tax planning.

MAKING SURE THAT our clients are tax-efficient in their affairs is one of the priorities of our financial planning service. With the right planning – always within a framework approved by the taxman – it is possible to limit your tax liabilities.

Income tax is the tax we pay on everything we earn, whether through wages and salaries or through income from property, investments or pensions. Every individual has a Personal Allowance – normally £11,850, although very high earners will have a reduced allowance. All income above this allowance is assessed for income tax and the amount of tax you pay will depend on your total income.

If you are married or in a civil partnership and one partner has an income below the Personal Allowance, the lower earner can transfer a portion of his or her allowance – £1,190 – to the higher earner, resulting in a lower tax bill for the higher earner. This allowance is known as the Marriage Allowance (not to be confused with the Married Couple’s Allowance which can only be claimed by couples where one partner was born before 6 April 1935). This can be particularly useful for retired couples, for example, where one partner has the benefit of a personal pension bringing his or her income above the Personal Allowance and the other relies solely on the state pension.

Tax-efficient savings are available to almost every saver.

The ISA framework allows a total investment of up to £20,000 a year (2018/19 tax year) which can be used for either cash ISAs or stocks and shares ISAs – or a mixture of both. The ISA allowance can also be used in part for Lifetime ISA (LISA) savings, a solution specially set up to help those aged between 18 and 40 to save either for the deposit on their first home or for retirement. You can put up to £4,000 a year into a LISA and the Government will pay a bonus of 25 per cent of contributions per year when the money is withdrawn for one of the approved purposes.

In addition to ISAs, every basic rate and higher rate taxpayer has a Personal Savings Allowance. Basic rate taxpayers can earn up to £1,000 in the current tax year from savings interest free of tax and higher rate taxpayers can earn up to £500. This allowance is not available to additional rate taxpayers.

Pensions are a tax-efficient way of accumulating wealth in the longer term as you will receive tax relief on any contributions you make into your pension scheme – so, for example, for every £8 a basic rate taxpayer puts into his or her pension scheme, the Government will add a further £2 in tax relief.

If you receive money from dividends, that income may be subject to tax. However, we all have a dividend allowance of £2,000 (2018/19) so only those who receive dividends above this figure will incur a tax liability. Taxable dividend income is taxed at a special rate, depending on which income tax band you fall into. Dividends on investments held in a Stocks and Shares ISA don’t count towards this allowance.

Ensuring the tax efficiency of your income is a fundamental building block of a financial plan. An independent financial adviser will ensure that you take advantage of ways to manage your tax liabilities.

The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

All paint is made freshly to order using the highest quality ingredients and delivered to customers throughout the UK the next day. What do you like about living in Norfolk?

It’s just the best place in the world, but don’t let the secret out – it’s already getting busy! We love the North Norfolk coast, particularly the Burnham Market to Blakeney piece. Norwich as well is a marvellous shopping centre with loads of independent shops.

Where do you like to eat and drink?

We tend to not travel too far out of Reepham.

The Kings Arms must be the best pub in the country for us. It’s got that perfect balance that caters for all their clientele. Good food reasonably priced, great beers and a lovely atmosphere. For something a bit more special we might go to The Dial House, recently taken over and very much improved. We also occasionally venture to Aylsham for a good curry.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

When we’re not working, we like to go to the coast and take our little boat out to Scoult

Head Island. Golf and squash are also on our list of favourite activities, although there’s not been much time “not working” over the past few months. We have three grandchildren now too, so seeing them at the weekends is also very important to us.

Why did you set up Fenwick & Tilbrook?

For us it was an opportunity that was too good to miss. We had both always wanted to create a “real business” that was manufacturing something worthwhile and growing it. We originally got into paint by restarting manufacture for a brand that had ceased trading and then in Spring 2018, we launched our own range of 120 colours under our own Fenwick & Tilbrook brand. We are both very motivated by achievement and starting this business and growing it has been tremendously satisfying. Of course, there is still a very long way to go but the ball is rolling!

And the quality of our paint means that once someone uses it, they want to use it again.

Where does the inspiration for your colours come from?

The inspiration for the colours mainly comes from Clare. We are both inspired by lovely colours from nature, especially being based in such a beautiful part of the country. We also have one eye firmly focused on what we think our customers will like. The idea for our 120 colours was to provide a wide enough range that meant it wasn’t necessary for customers to look to another brand to fill a gap – we have everything from period colours such as Cley to contemporary shades including Lady Jane in all paint finishes. We had so much fun naming the colours and it was equally rewarding when people started to order our new paint using our new names.

Where would you most like to see Fenwick & Tilbrook paint used?

The beauty of Fenwick & Tilbrook is that it can be used anywhere! From stately homes to your home, the quality of our paint and our range of colours makes it ideal for properties of all ages and styles. It has such tremendous qualities in terms of coverage and durability, that it offers great value for money. Some paint needs numerous coats and will look very tired after eighteen months - ours doesn’t. It looks good and lasts for years. It’s much like everything in life, you get what you pay for.

We have a very direct route to market too – ordering from us direct or through our specially selected retail partners - so there isn’t a long chain of business taking a margin out of the product you put onto your walls. This means that we can focus on using exactly the right balance of the best ingredients to deliver the brilliant qualities we’re so proud of with Fenwick & Tilbrook paint.

Tell us something that people don’t know about you We originally met in 1977 and were boyfriend and girlfriend for a couple of years. We met again in 2010, having had a “trial separation” for 31 years. We’re now married - coming up to our 6th year.

What is your proudest achievement?

For Simon, it was merging two Norwich-based printing businesses together in 2011, creating one business that was profitable, rather than two that were just scraping along. For Clare, it would be completing her Psychology degree whilst bringing up three small children.

Run us through a typical day for Simon & Clare Tilbrook We arrive at work at about 8.30am, note down the key objectives for the day ahead and then prioritise and allocate them. However, running your own business also means taking on and juggling every other new task that comes in during the day too.

We purge the machinery and conduct the daily maintenance checks to keep every aspect of the manufacturing process scrupulously clean and in tip top condition.

In addition to making paint and talking to customers about orders and offering advice on using Fenwick & Tilbrook products, key activities during the day might include prospecting for new design and retail partners, testing and developing new paint colours and products, marketing including social media (we have some brilliant customers who love to share images and video of their projects with us) and financial controls.

The day normally passes very quickly, and we can often still find ourselves at work after 7pm.

Then it’s home for a glass of red wine for Clare and a beer for me. Normal conversation remains mostly about paint! Hello Fresh proves very useful for our weekday dinners as we normally haven’t had the time to go shopping.

Then it’s TV for an hour or two, followed by bed.
