Before we know it, the pantomime season will get into full swing with theatres across Norfolk and Suffolk staging traditional festive entertainment. With office parties and family celebrations, the social calendar can become a little busy, but there’s always room to fit in a special event that will help to make the festive season particularly memorable. Mark Nicholls looks at some Christmas events, shows and activities to whet your appetite. When you hear the name Marcus Brigstocke, chances are you’ll be expecting to hear comedy of a certain flavour. All comedians have a little touch of the wicked about them, but with Devil May Care, Marcus is veering off into whole new territory. Brian Donaldson caught up with Marcus ahead of his evening at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds. Stage Two at Norwich Theatre Royal will host the premiere this autumn of Gastronomic, the latest production from the city-based Curious Directive which created the trail-blazing Frogman earlier this year, harnessing the power of virtual reality to help tell its story. Performance, state-of-the-art technology and a five-course taster meal are on the menu with an exciting new immersive dining experience which will see the audience placed on board an Airbus A380 on a long-haul flight where their culinary needs will be attended to by three chefs. Our cover star is Lily James, fresh from the red carpet for the premiere of Mamma Mia Here We Go Again she has been pounding the streets of Norfolk and Suffolk filming with director Danny Boyle at locations which included Halesworth, Lowestoft, Gorleston and the Latitude Festival. There’s nowhere quite like north Norfolk for walks. The changing landscape the seasons bring, makes walking through the countryside enjoyable all year round. Spring and Summer are spectacular with wild flowers and the famous Norfolk poppies. Autumn treats you to russet

woodlands, and walking in Winter is fantastic for brisk walks on empty beaches and the tranquil paths of the Norfolk Broads. October brings the Norfolk Trails Walking & Cycling Festival, featuring an exciting range of walking and cycling events for all ages, abilities and interest. Find out more

information by visiting: www.walkingnorfolkfestival.co.uk With the summer holidays at an end, take advantage of the quieter walking trails on the north Norfolk coast and countryside. Below you’ll find a round up of some north Norfolk’s wellknown routes. There are plenty of routes and trails suitable for all ages and abilities in north Norfolk, including the Norfolk Trails network which has over 1000 miles of walking, cycling and bridle routes throughout Norfolk. The Norfolk Coast Path National Trail runs for 63 miles through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from Hunstanton to Sea Palling. The most westerly point of the Norfolk Coast Path is Hunstanton and the trail passes through areas rich in wildlife, the salt marshes near Brancaster and Holkham National Nature Reserve with its vast sandy beaches and pinewoods.

After Wells-next-the-Sea the Norfolk Coast Path passes along the edge of salt marshes, with superb views of Blakeney Point, and its grey and common seals. Cley-next-the-Sea marks the start of the section that follows a shingle beach and freshwater marshes rich with wildlife. The route continues along the shingle beach almost as far as Sheringham, where it follows the top of the sandy cliffs, heading inland and taking you through the wooded hills between Sheringham and Cromer, before returning to the coast to Sea Palling. This trail combines with the Peddars Way (which it joins at Holmenext-the-Sea) to form the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, one of 15 National Trails in England and Wales. Peddars Way runs from Hunstanton

for 46 miles all the way to the Brecks, a unique area of forest, heath and low river valleys. The trail follows a Roman road built along the line of an even older trackway. The name, Peddars Way, is believed to be derived from the Latin ‘pedester’, which means ‘on foot’. Much of the Peddars Way can be used by cyclists and there is a special route available to horse riders. Marriott’s Way is a 26-mile footpath, bridleway and cycle route which follows the two disused railway lines, running between Aylsham and Norwich. Wildlife, countryside, public art and a wealth of local history can be found along the way. Marriott’s Way itself is a county wildlife site and passes through many interesting landscapes and wildlife-rich habitats, such as Whitwell Common and the Wensum River Valley where you may

Named after the once important weaving industry, which flourished in the Middle Ages around North Walsham, Weavers’ Way runs for 61 miles between Cromer and Great Yarmouth, taking in flint churches, country houses, wind-pumps and historic railway buildings. The route also offers a variety of scenery, from the woodlands and mixed farmland of north Norfolk to the grazing marshes beside the rivers Thurne, Bure and Yare. Walking through the many parks and gardens in north Norfolk during September is a real delight with a colourful landscape, blue skies and less crowds! The National Trust’s Sheringham Park, with nearly 1000 acres, is ideal for all types of walks. Take your pick from four waymarked routes (between one to five miles), taking you through the varying areas of the park, of which coastal views are a feature. Or for true tranquillity, Gooderstone Water Gardens, has six acres of gardens with waterways, ponds, bridges, nature trails and grass paths. STAGE TWO at Norwich Theatre Royal will host the

premiere this autumn of Gastronomic, the latest production from the city-based curious directive which created the trailblazing Frogman earlier this year which harnessed the power of virtual reality to help tell its story. Their latest creative project is Gastronomic, which runs from September 6-22, which will see the audience placed on board an Airbus A380 on a long-haul flight where their culinary needs will be attended to by three chefs. A total of 40 ‘passengers’ will be treated to a five-course tasting menu simultaneously with their own in-flight screen at each performance. As they fly over oceans, deserts and rainforests, the food will accompany the stories about why and how these chefs came to be there. The show is being devised through August by Janet Etuk (Love, NT), Georgina Strawson (Frogman, curious directive) and Craig Hamilton (Jubilee, Chris Goode & Co), with support from the National Theatre’s Immersive Storytelling Studio. And they are working closely with five city restaurants which are Benedicts, Shiki, Namaste Village Café, The Assembly House and Kemp’s at Norwich Theatre Royal who are developing dishes to be served in the show’s long-haul flight setting. Jack Lowe, who is part of the devising team and founder of curious directive, said the idea came from a free online course which covered how and why politicians take the act of eating

together so seriously. “From that, we chose an airline to place characters and their stories as food becomes the soundtrack to some of the most important conversations imaginable. Chefs believe good food can change the world so we are making a play about that belief and, like Frogman, we are using storytelling and our trademark technology to create a new form of show.” Stephen Crocker, chief executive of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “Gastronomic is going to be an extraordinary piece of theatre. Using technology and the creative culinary flair of some of Norwich’s top chefs mixed with curious directive’s storytelling skill will mean the birth of a unique and exciting performance that showcases the very best of Norwich.” The five-course taster menu is being created by Benedicts (head chef Richard Bainbridge), Shiki (head chef Shun Tomii), Namaste Village (head chef Dalsukh Jetani), The Assembly House (head chef Richard Hughes) and Norwich Theatre Royal Kemp’s Restaurant (head chef Keith Cottrell). Alongside traditional Heritage Open Days events, there will be a special programme of ‘Extraordinary Women’ talks, walks and exhibitions, in celebration of the centenary of the Universal Suffrage Act. Special openings across the region include Blickling Estate, Burwell Museum and Windmill and St George’s Theatre – with every single walk, talk, opening and exhibition free to visit! Get out THERE! Out There Festival | September 14-16 | Great Yarmouth

T

his year’s Out There Festival – Great Yarmouth’s annual celebration of circus and street arts – is helping to mark the 250th anniversary of the first ever circus staged in 1768 in London by showman Philip Astley. The town, together with Norwich, has been designated as one of six UK Cities of Circus by Circus250. The Out There International Festival of Circus & Street Arts takes place in the town centre and on the seafront and it’s completely free. Now in its 11th year, the festival is described by organisers as “a spectacular riot of colour, thrills, spills and fun”. This year’s headline event comes from French street arts titans, Générik Vapeur,

who will be returning to Great Yarmouth to collaborate with Gorilla Circus. Together they will create a special Circus250 version of their loud and anarchic street show Bivouac, featuring 250 local people. First seen in Great Yarmouth in 2010, Bivouac features blue men and women marching, running and dancing through the streets, banging oil drums and accompanied by fire, smoke loud music and general mayhem, leading to a spectacular, anarchic crashing finale. The festival attracts more than 50,000 people to the town from all over the eastern region and beyond, making it one of the biggest weekend events in the region and

boosting the local economy. Over the last decade Out There has built a reputation for presenting the weird and wonderful, the outrageous and outstanding, featuring an incredibly cosmopolitan line up of acts from the across the globe. This year is no exception with around 30 companies from countries including France, Spain and New Zealand. These include Catalonian and Balearic acts including Barcelona’s amazing teeterboard and trampoline exponents, inTarsi. There’s also offbeat mayhem from France’s Tout en Vrac while Globus Hystericus from Slovenia take us on a thrilling journey through the town’s streets in search of lost treasure. New Zealand’s knockout performer Fraser Hooper brings his comic boxing challenge to take on all comers. “The international flavour is part of what makes Out There so vibrant,” says Joe Mackintosh, chief executive of organisers SeaChange Arts. “The name Out There refers to our geographic location, out on the edge of the east coast, but it is also about the approach we take to programming. We always aim to leave audiences with their mouths agape, the memory of something weird and wonderful lingering long after.” From closer to home Dizzy O’Dare’s Phileas Fogg Day 79 fuses modern technology with Jules Verne’s classic adventure. Great Yarmouth born and bred Tom Gaskin has previously starred in Hippodrome shows and is now making a name for himself as one of London’s leading young circus performers and models. e r a C y a M l Dev i ‘I’m the most interesting subject I have at the moment’ When you hear the name Marcus Brigstocke, chances

are you’ll be expecting to hear comedy of a certain flavour. “Audiences who come to see me are used to seeing someone being fairly polemic, angry and frustrated. But in my new show I wanted to do something where I step away from the cliché of me being posh, middle-class and a bit angsty. What if I remove myself from the picture? So, I’m going to be Lucifer.” Brian Donaldson caught up with Marcus ahead of his evening at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds. All comedians have a little touch of the wicked about them, but with Devil May Care Marcus is taking his imp-like nature and veering off into whole new territory. “This is something I’ve never tried before. It’s effectively a character piece, and like most character stand-up it’s a thin veneer over what I am. It’s simply a means of talking about stuff from a certain point of view. I’m very interested in notions of what’s good and what’s bad. I think there are very few people who do bad things with bad intentions; there are a lot of us who do bad things with good intentions – or at least with blinkers on – and that’s what I’m interested in.” In order to take his audience along with him, Marcus doesn’t have to just act a bit like Satan: he has to look like him, too. “We’ll see how far into the tour I regret this but I will be wearing full devil make-up and horns for every show. Marcus won’t just be donning some horns in Devil May Care, he’ll be locking them with those he views as trying to simplify and polarise political debate in Britain. “What’s interesting for me is the speed with which we put each other into groups, and that’s something which has been accelerated by social media. ‘Right, so you voted for Brexit: that means you’re a bit thick. You’re a Conservative: you’re basically a Nazi. You’re a Corbyn supporter: you’re a dangerous myopic utopian dreamer. You’re a Scottish Nationalist: you’re naïve and blinkered. You’re English: you’re every bullying patriarch that ever

existed.’ Social media has amplified that process, and in this show I’ll be dividing everyone up deliberately and in a cartoonish way by saying how everyone is so much worse than everyone else: I’ll show that we’re really not helping each other with this level of discussion.” “My starting point for a show is not what’s funny, it’s entirely what’s interesting, and my job is then to make it funny. Obviously, come show-time if I’ve failed to make it funny it doesn’t make the edit even if it is interesting. But what’s more important to me is ‘what do I really care about?’ When I saw Jerry Seinfeld live – and he’s someone I obviously admire as a stand-up – I was thinking, ‘mate, just tell me one thing that you care about.’ That’s always been the stand-up that I’ve been drawn to; it doesn’t have to be passionate or ranty but just needs a feeling that someone cares about something.” While screen work and stand-up have got Marcus Brigstocke to where he is today, one longstanding ambition has also been realised. A natural performer, he’s been keen on making strides in theatre, and some intriguing roles have come his way in the last couple of decades. “I got into comedy in the first place because I love being on stage and performing, and making and creating things. But I always wanted to be cast in things as well as writing my own stuff: there was always an ambition to use other people’s work and have a script.” But for now, Marcus Brigstocke is preparing to tap into his dark side and make us laugh as he transforms into the devil incarnate. While parts of his show will no doubt include passionate tirades against the things that get his goat, he will be putting life’s irritations into some kind of perspective. O

ur cover star is hot property Lily James. Fresh from the red carpet for the premiere of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – she stars as the younger Donna, the character immortalised by Meryl Streep in the first movie – she has been pounding Norfolk and Suffolk streets filming with director Danny Boyle. Halesworth, Gorleston, Lowestoft and Latitude festival were all used as locations for the Beatles-inspired movie directed by Boyle and written by Suffolk’s Richard Curtis. Places&Faces went on a spot of location-hunting ourselves and discovered our counties have provided the backdrop for many a famous movie – from the timeless beauty of Melton Constable Hall in 1971’s The Go-Between to Cromer Pier (as well as numerous locations in Norwich) in Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. Our magnificent beaches are a magnet for directors wanting wide open spaces – watch out for the parachute jump scenes filmed over Holkham in The Eagle Has Landed and Gwyneth Paltrow on the same beach in the moving closing scene in Shakespeare in Love. was set in Cape Cod, the fashionable Massachusetts resort, but was in fact filmed in our own Winterton-on-Sea. Our green fields have seen plenty of action, too. A World War Two Dunkirk massacre was recreated

at Walpole St. Andrew near King's Lynn for Atonement, starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley and based on the book by former UEA Creative Writing student Ian McEwan. In Die Another Day, Burnham Deepdale farmland became a North Korean paddy field for the James Bond movie starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry. And when Stanley Kubrick was looking for a paddy field for a scene in Full Metal Jacket of US helicopters shooting up the Vietnamese countryside he chose the tranquil Norfolk Broads. Time appears to have forgotten Norwich’s Elm Hill making it a dead cert for location scouts. And there’s no more iconic building on the street than the Britons Arms. In 2007’s Stardust, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel and with a glittering cast that included Sienna Miller, Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, the 14th century building was transformed from tea-room into The Slaughtered Prince hostelry. A short walk from Elm Hill, Norwich Cathedral has also had its share of starring roles, not least in Jack the Giant Slayer. For the 2013 Hollywood remake of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, the 12th century landmark was transformed into a fairytale castle. For a full-on Norfolk feast of ‘oh look, it’s…’ there’s no better than 45 Years, filmed in city and county and with mesmerising performances from Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling. Suffolk’s coastal towns crop up time and again. Unsurprisingly, Southwold is a regular destination for film-makers. Iris, the story of Iris Murdoch starring Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent, was partly set in the town – as was the much darker Drowning by Numbers by arthouse director Peter Greenway. Staying on the dark side, the bleak and violent Witchfinder General, based on the true story of a Suffolk priest, tried by water and executed for witchcraft, was filmed at locations across the county including Orford Castle and Kentwell Hall. Lavenham also stars as it does in numerous other movies from Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, where it became ‘Godric’s Hollow’, Harry’s home town. But for a movie filmed in Suffolk and completly rooted in the county then the honours must surely go to Akenfield. Directed by Suffolk-born Peter Hall, based on a novel about a Suffolk village by Suffolkbased Ronald Blythe, it stars villages just west of Wickham Market and a cast of non-professional actors drawn from the local population. With a rich heritage in the arts and a landscape that has inspired generations of writers, poets and painters, there are more theatres, galleries and museums in Norfolk and Suffolk than you can shake a stick (or more aptly perhaps, a paintbrush) at. But there are also countless ways you can get creative yourself – why not try your hand at something different this month and discover a talent you never knew you had. Here are just a few that caught our eye…

CREATIVE WRITING AT THE CUT It’s said everyone has a novel in them, and creative writing classes are the perfect place to get started. Transformed from a 19th century maltings building in 2003, The Cut in Halesworth now hosts a programme of workshops, ranging from ballet to belly dancing, alongside its line-up of theatre, dancing and film. Put pen to paper and banish writer’s block at the weekly creative writing sessions, which run every Friday from 10am and are open to writers of all levels. Students are invited to share their work, discuss ideas and provide feedback in an informal and friendly setting, with weekly challenges to provide inspiration and encourage new thinking. Takes place: Fridays, 10am | www.newcut.org SPRAY PAINTING CLASS AT ANTEROS The Anteros Arts Foundation is a charity for education and the promotion of the arts in Norfolk, offering courses in painting, printmaking and sculpture. Set in Anteros’ historic courtyard in Norwich, you’ll learn basic competence in using spray paint with various nozzles; how to cut and use a two-layer stencil; and finally will design and produce your own freehand traditional graffiti piece. Every Sunday it raises the rafters by holding a community choir group from 7pm. Open to all levels of skill and experience, all you need to join is a passion for singing and a willingness to get vocal. The current choir perform from genres ranging from pop to soul and have performed in a number of local competitions and shows. Takes place: Sundays, 7pm www.theseagull.co.uk CRAFT WORKSHOPS AT MAYFLOWER ARTS AND CRAFTS Set in the charming market town of Beccles, Mayflower is a one-stop-shop for all things crafty. Create a one-of-a-kind statement necklace or beaded bracelet for yourself or a loved one and experiment with a variety of styles at its jewellery workshop, run every Tuesday. If you’d like the ability to ‘make do and mend’ your clothes or have a long-held desire to knit your own snuggly blanket for the winter months, Mayflower also offer popular sewing, knitting and crochet workshops where you can hone your skills. Its upcoming course in September will guide you to create your own individual floral arrangement in a rustic-style pot, while the following workshop in October is a special halloween masterclass that will result in a spooky showstopper to wow trick or treaters with. Takes place: September 22, 10am and October 29, 7pm www.flourishflowers.florist PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT HOLKHAM HALL A magnificent stately home set in rolling parkland, Holkham is already a fantastic setting to inspire you to get behind the lens, but add in the hall’s herd of fallow deer and the changing autumnal leaves and you have the opportunity to capture something really special. On this one-day course, you will be guided to the best vantage points and helped to achieve that once-in-a-lifetime shot with your own camera and equipment by professional photographer Nigel Downer, whose images have been featured on television and in books and magazines worldwide. t oo r t ee B Soup INGREDIENTS • 3-4 Medium (apple-sized) Beetroot (About 500-600g, grated coarsely, or chopped into small dice) • 500g/1lb 2oz Ripe Tomatoes (Halved) • 1 Clove Garlic (Chopped Roughly) METHOD Place the halved tomatoes in an ovenproof dish. Throw over the garlic and drizzle over half the olive oil. Roast for 25-30 minutes in a fairly hot oven (190˚C/375F/Gas 5) until soft and pulpy. Rub through a sieve to remove the skin and pips. Heat the remaining oil in a pan and sweat the onion for a few minutes until soft. Add the beetroot and the stock and bring to the boil. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground white pepper. Simmer gently for 7-10 minutes until the beetroot is tender.

Stir in the tomato purée, transfer the soup to a blender and process until completely smooth. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary TO SERVE COLD, chill the soup in the fridge, then divide between six bowls. Using your fingers, crumble a little feta into each bowl. A sprinkling of grated raw beetroot makes a good garnish for the cold version TO SERVE HOT, reheat the soup until thoroughly hot but not boiling. Divide between warm bowls. Serve with crusty bread.

Late summer Sunday afternoons were always wonderful for me as a child, my siblings and I would get on our bikes and cycle down the Green Lanes in Aylsham towards Abel Heath on the hunt for fresh, ripe blackberries. Enjoying the last of the summer sun on our backs as we clambered through the hedgerows getting scraped by thorns and stung by stinging nettles filling up the baskets on the front of our bikes with plump, juicy blackberries. Having spent the afternoon picking, collecting and occasionally eating! We would make our way home racing to present our parents with our baskets heaving with blackberries so we could make them into a delicious Apple & Blackberry pie to be had with custard after our Sunday roast. When sipping this simple yet delicious cocktail it takes me back to those carefree childhood days at the end of Summer just on the cusp of Autumn picking blackberries. INGREDIENTS

SERVES ONE

• 25ml Gin • 15ml Stock Syrup • 7 Blackberries (couple extra to garnish)

TO MAKE THE COCKTAIL

• Soda Water to Finish • 7 Large Basil Leaves (a sprig to garnish) • 20ml Fresh Lemon Juice

In a cocktail shaker muddle together the gin, stock syrup, basil leaves, blackberries and lemon juice. Add a couple of ice cubes and shake until cooled. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice, feel free to allow a little of the pulp into the glass. Top off with soda water and garnish with a sprig of basil and a fresh blackberry.

Take the duck fat and thyme and place in a saucepan bring to a rolling simmer and place the pheasant legs into it,cook on the lowest heat Until tender and cooked through, this will take about 3 hours. Once they have been on the stove gas for 2 and a half hours take the water,milk and some salt and pepper and place in a saucepan, bring to the boil and add the polenta flour bring to the boil whisking all the time and be careful as if it gets too hot it will spit out of the pan, once this has cooked for 2 minutes at boiling point, add the parmesan cheese and butter and whisk this in until it has been incorporated. Reserve this warm somewhere. Take the beef stock out that has been reduced and place in a clean saucepan, add the blackberry puree a bit at a time until you are happy with the taste you should became to taste the beef flavour of the stock and the BlackBerry underneath it !! Place to one side to heat up later Blanch the carrots in boiling salted water and refresh once cooked, around 6 minutes.

Next put a trying pan on capable if taking 4 pheasant breasts and add 1 tbsp of oil, heat up and place the pheasant breast skin side down and fry until golden brown both sides, add the carrots place in a oven heated to 185.c for 2-3 minutes for a dash of pink in the pheasant breast and 2 minutes linger for well done juicy finish. TO FINISH

Place the leg into the oven to heat through and the skin to crisp. Reheat the polenta so it is boiling hot and place a quenelle on to the plate at the top, heat the sauce back up to boiling point and add the blackberries and hazelnuts. Cut the breast into 3 and place up against the polenta, add the leg next to it and then the carrots in a uniform pile next to the breast. Spoon the sauce over the breast and leg so that it covers the meat and garnish with pea shoots and enjoy !!

WINE

2015 Pinot age Rheb okslo of Vineyards South Afric a This is a wonderful estate which dates back to the late 1700s with traditional Cape Dutch style buildings some of which date back to the early settlers. The current owners bought the estate in 2006 and have taken advantage of the unique micro climate of the vineyards in the Paarl valley giving the ideal climatic conditions for the growing of premium grapes The Pinotage is a grape which is basically only grown in South Africa. A hybrid grape being a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault. The grape thrives in South Africa but very few other places in the world.

The wine is made by fermenting the grapes in Stainless steel on their skins and regular pump over of the cap to extract colour and flavour. The wine was then aged in 60% new oak and 40% 2 year old oak barrels for 14 months. A wonderful wine it shows complex, dark fruit flavours with notes of blackberry, prunes and hints of soft oak spices. The tannins fill the palate and nuances of dried fruit flavours linger on the aftertaste and work really well with the flavours of the Pheasant dish.

FOOD & WINE METHOD

First off heat a deep fat fryer up to 1800c, cut your leek into four so that they stand up like tree trunks, cut each one in half length ways and then finely julienne (half the size of matchsticks). Deep fry them until golden brown and take out 20 seconds before you think they are ready (they will crisps up when they come out of the fryer). Place them on a piece of kitchen paper to absorb the oil. Season and reserve until you need them. Place your stock on a high heat and bring to the boil. Once up to the boil turn to it’s lowest setting. Finely chop your shallots and garlic and add them to a medium size pan with a couple of tablespoons of oil. Place on a low to medium heat and sweat this down without any colour for 5 minutes. Add your risotto

There are few

pubs that sit amid such a lovely village location as The Dabbling Duck. The village green is a lush bridge to the 15th century church opposite, a pond mirrors the charming buildings around it and the soundtrack is – as you might expect – quacking (and dabbling) ducks as they paddle on the water. Quintessential Norfolk? Absolutely. When you enter, the ambience strikes you; warm, welcoming, relaxed and cosy. Low ceilings and ancient beams, sofas, and an upright piano in the bar lead round to an open fireplace that even at the height of a summer heatwave, is not hard to imagine aglow and ablaze in the depths of winter. Beyond is the front restaurant - where dogs are welcome - with shelves jammed with well-read books, prints on the walls and comfortably-spaced wooden tables. The rear restaurant is quieter, with the orangery aside it, and then opening into an al fresco dining area with barbecue, street food and pizzas in the summer months, with the area covered in the winter for similar meals… a country pub for all seasons. After a drink at the bar, we are seated at a corner table in the front restaurant, with a view across the green to St Mary’s.

I am dining with my younger daughter Sarah, always a good eating-out companion and someone who knows what she wants from a menu. Opting for the soup as a starter, she was pleased with her choice of coconut, sweet potato and cauliflower with a warm miniature beer loaf for £5. I’d enjoyed the scallops (£9.25) on a previous visit to The Dabbling Duck but this time chose the Massingham fried pigeon at £7.50 and found it delicious with vanilla pickled carrots, black garlic aioli and honey seeds, the sweetness a lovely complement to the meat. Owned by Mark and Sally Dobby, with business partners Steve Kilham and Dominic Symington, The Dabbling Duck has flourished since being renovated as the village inn a dozen or so years ago. The couple have been at the helm for the past five years and have seen it gain renown for its food and drink in an idyllic setting. The menu has a simple, classic pub food ethos, but with a classy twist. Main courses include the tempting pan fried cod (£13.50), Moroccan spiced cauliflower steak (£13.50), 8oz rump steak (£17.50) with dripping chips or a 16oz ribeye (£24.50) with Argentinian salad. Choosing from the pub’s ‘classics’ element of the menu, Sarah had the excellent Massingham Dexter Burger at £13.50 and I went for the Goan Curry (£13.75) with prawns (there is a chicken or vegetable option too). I like a bit of heat with my Indian food but the big decision was whether to go for medium or hot. Helping me out, the waitress suggested medium with some hot chili paste on the side to add in if I wanted to raise the temperature. Served in a Balti dish, with coconut rice and maneesh flatbread and mango chutney to the side, the curry at medium had all the heat I required, was alive with king prawns and full of flavour with tomatoes, onions, and peppers. Other diners, I could see, were taken by the beer battered fillet of cod (£13) and the Cromer crab salad seemed popular (£14.50). The Dabbling Duck also has a range of sandwiches and baguettes.

Yet it is a pub where you can also simply enjoy a drink at the bar or sit at a table outside with a pint or a glass of Pimms, and along with the ales (Adnams, Woodfordes and Grain, for example), there is a gin and mixers menu and an ample wine list. Sarah and I had a lovely relaxing meal in a lively mid-week atmosphere where our fellow diners were residents from the pub’s nine rooms (plus a holiday cottage), eating alongside visitors out for a bite from further afield. Resuming, after a break, for dessert Sarah opted for the Malt Teaser – which is all it sounds; a malt feast of shortbread, tia maria crisp, malt parfait and Horlicks hot chocolate (£6.75). The Fifty Shades of Red of enriched vanilla mascarpone, poached rhubarb, compressed strawberries, rose lemon curd, meringue and strawberry sorbet looked a treat at £7. But I like to end a meal with some cheese. I’m always curious as to how seriously any pub or restaurant takes its cheese platter and The Dabbling Duck didn’t disappoint with black bomber, Binham blue and baron bigod, accompanied by refreshingly crisp celery, walnuts, crackers and the all-important spiced apple chutney (£8). The summer menu is about to switch to a winter edition, retaining the favourites but with a heartier feel, and there are various special events at The Dabbling Duck in the weeks ahead that appeal such as a wine evening on October 11, including a three-course meal and hosted by Francois Pages of Gerard Bertrand. I’m looking forward to heading back for the two-day mussel festival on November 8 and 9, and there is a Christmas market on December 8-10 with all-day food stalls and live music in the evening. Whatever the season, the ambience at The Dabbling Duck has a warm, welcoming aura and a menu and range of food and drink to match. Deciding to have a vasectomy is a big decision.

Helen Harper of Spire Norwich Hospital sat down with Mr William Finch, Consultant Urologist to discuss what may be involved in the procedure to help you decide if having a vasectomy is the right decision for you. What is a vasectomy? A vasectomy or male sterilisation is a surgical procedure that removes a small section of the vas deferens. This results in a permanent form of male contraception, which is over 99% effective. It’s a short and straightforward procedure, usually performed under local anaesthetic (meaning you’ll be awake during the procedure) and, in most cases, you should be able to go home on the same day. Does it affect your sex life? A vasectomy won’t affect your sex life or your sex drive. The only thing it will affect is your ability to have children. You will still have erections and ejaculate but your semen will no longer contain sperm. After the procedure you will be able to have intercourse as soon as you feel comfortable, and this is usually after a couple of weeks or so. For the first 12-16 weeks you are not sterile and another form of contraception must be used to allow full clearing of any remaining sperm in your tubes. You will be asked to submit specimens of semen for examination under a microscope and you will be informed when you are sterile and can stop using alternative forms of contraception. Does a vasectomy stop you from getting sexually transmitted diseases? The answer is no. A vasectomy is a contraception method and it won’t protect you from contracting or passing on sexually transmitted diseases. Can the procedure be reversed? A vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control. However if this is a burning question in your mind maybe you should hold off the procedure for a while. You should only have a vasectomy if you are 100% sure you don’t want to have children or any more children in the future. Reversal of vasectomy is possible, but a reversal procedure is not always successful and some men decide to freeze some sperm before the procedure and this could be an option for you. Is it wise to discuss this procedure with my partner before seeking medical advice? The ultimate decision lies with you as an individual. However, if you are in a relationship, it is really important to discuss this with your partner and make the decision together. The consultant shouldn’t be the first person you talk to about a vasectomy!

What happens during the procedure? You’ll have a local anaesthetic for the 20 minute procedure. This means you’ll be awake but won’t feel pain, but some men do feel a slight “pulling” sensation. Your experienced surgeon will feel for the vas deferens and hold this tube and then make a small cut in your scrotum to expose the vas deferens tubes that carry the sperm from your testicle to the penis. Your surgeon will remove a small section of each vas and then the ends of the tube are sealed or tied before the small cut in the scrotum is closed with a dissolvable stitch. This is carried out on both the left and the right vas deferens. What happens following the procedure? After the procedure you might feel mild discomfort, swelling and bruising of your scrotum for a few days. Don’t worry, this is expected. Usually the recovery for a vasectomy is quick and you will be able to return to work after a few days once these mild symptoms have settled. We do recommend avoiding exercising or doing any heavy lifting for a couple of weeks to prevent any strain on healing wounds. What happens to sperm after a vasectomy? After a vasectomy, the testes continue to make sperm. When the sperm cells die, they disintegrate and are absorbed by the body. This is the same way the body handles other types of cells that die and are replaced every day.

I hope that we

can all still feel unsettled by the research published by New York University which established that at just 6 years old, young girls are much more likely to consider ‘brilliance’ a trait of their male classmates. Gender stereotypes start young. Progressing through the school years, a girl’s subject choices at GCSE level continue to sit in line with cultural associations of what constitutes a “man’s job” versus a woman’s*. Upon reaching undergraduate level, the idea of ‘male dominated sectors’ continue, with the biggest gender gaps emerging in computing, mechanical engineering, sports science, electrical engineering and economics*. Then, when entering the workplace, women have lower expectations for their first salary*. It seems there is a self-fulfilling prophecy at work, launching women into their careers on their back-foot. Inspiring Females is a movement to inspire, educate and empower young women, highlighting the vast range of opportunities available and connecting them with guests at all stages of their career and life journeys. Through a busy programme of events and initiatives across the academic year, shaped by a passionate group of young women from Norwich High School for Girls, Inspiring Females has reached over 1,000 young women since starting in 2016. Events are open to girls at Norwich High School, but also to girls from local state schools and those within the GDST (Girls’ Day School Trust). Backing for this initiative has come from successful women and companies spanning STEM, Construction, Marketing, Investment, Media and Entrepreneurship. Bound together by the drive to raise the next generation of female leaders, speakers attend Inspiring Female events to deliver their personal messages of resilience, compassion, agility, bravery- and hope. As an

example, Hannah Felstead, UEA Biology and Neuroscience PhD student, told girls earlier this year; “My dream is that, one day, people won’t assume someone with ‘Dr’ in their title is a man.” Young women feel enough pressure upon them as they move through their academic careers, without adding to their concerns by presenting unachievable ideals of the ‘super woman’, who manages to ‘do it all’. That’s why, at Inspiring Females events, presenters are briefed to “speak honestly” about their experiences. Stories of failure, heartbreak, disappointment and rising again resonate powerfully with the young audience; at the Inspiring Females Summit in July 2018, the girls thanked The Unreasonables’ Jo Cruse for providing some amazing take-outs, from her personal story of great professional success followed by deep personal lows. “You are an extraordinary generation of women. Your potential is limitless. But just because you can do anything, doesn’t mean you have to do everything” Jo advised this audience. To further support the girls through the ups and downs of their demanding school lives, Inspiring Females promotes personal wellbeing, most recently inviting speakers trained in integrative health, mindfulness, meditation, yoga, life-coaching and more to deliver a range of life-affirming sessions. At the heart of its mission, Inspiring Females wants to push girls to the very edge of their ability, encouraging them to reach further, fly higher and step up unabashed, but not to the detriment of their physical or mental wellbeing. “I want young women to know that they don’t have to be perfect to ‘make it’.” explained Emma Waldock, Geologist for Statoil, at the IF STEM event in May. In 2018, its third year of activity, Inspiring Females invited men to take the stage, as

VIMs (Very Inspiring Males) at the July Summit. The move – as requested by girls in attendance at previous events – brought a new level of diversity into panel Q&As and workshops. Also driven by the desire to uplift talented young women and propel more females into male dominated industries, men from Science, Marketing, Insurance, Fashion Design and Consultancy joined the ranks of inspiring speakers, and will be called on again to share at other Inspiring Females events in the future. A vision of equality is what continues to motivate Inspiring Females, after all, “Who wouldn’t want equality?” asked Becky Jago, ITV Presenter and panel guest for Inspiring Females in the Arts, October 2017. Yet, this is just the start. To add to its buzzing roster of speakers, Inspiring Females hopes to bring on board more campaigners, from other industries where females are yet to take leadership. For example, we are particularly looking to add speakers from Medicine (women make up only 12%* of UK surgical consultants in practice) and the Emergency Services (startlingly, female firefighters represent just 7%* of the London Fire Brigade) at future events. Advocates and speakers from these lines of work would add to the strong representation of capable and successful women already endorsing the movement. Looking forward, Inspiring Females aims to reach a wider audience, with plans to take the Summit on tour in 2019, partner with like-minded organisations within Norfolk and develop the programme so even more young women can get involved. Awardwinning Design Engineer and keynote speaker at the 2018 Summit, Yewande Akinola, shared on social media that “Every young lady needs to attend an Inspiring Females Summit” - and that’s certainly what the movement is aspiring to achieve.

Many of us do not like to see the journey of education in its entirety. The speed at which our children change from babes in arms to challenging teenagers is like no other form of time passing. However, in order to help to

Change always comes with its own strengths and challenges and yet we often expect our young people to embrace change without any issue. Let us consider the last time that anything changed in an adult life - it could be a new job, new house or new relationship. Just because this is the norm during the academic life cycle, there is no reason to think that we could not all be better prepared for this time of transition. By the time you get to September the transition process will be well under way at school. Most will have started the process in June prior to the holidays. In a good school you will have experienced contact with the new teacher and year head. These meetings should have allayed your own fears and concerns. These concerns are normal and shared by many parents: Will they make friends? Will other children be mean? Will they get lost? Will the work be challenging….too difficult….too easy? Who can they talk to if they have a problem? Your own concerns will not be helped as your children progress and get older. The older they get the less

they are likely to talk to you and the less direct contact you will have with their teachers. Not many teenagers are going to thank you for turning up at the school gate, as you are likely to have done regularly when they were at primary school. The change from one teacher at primary school to a different teacher for each subject at secondary school also makes it feel like you are losing contact with them. I like to use the secret question tactic, which is not asking what they did at school today, but what was the best thing you did at school, or the worst? Who made you laugh at school today? Which subject did you enjoy (or not)? You get the idea. Ask really specific questions and you will find out so much more. One of my children was having a difficult time expressing his emotions, so when I picked them up the first thing we did was to rate the day: 1 being the worst day ever and 10 being the best. This was another way of getting conversation out of the reluctant sharer. I also shared my rating so we discussed what had made a day a six or a seven and why was it not an eight or nine. My nine year old has told me that you cannot have a 10 at school because it does not involve electronics or Christmas! With that feeling of the loss of contact between parent and teacher in the move to secondary school, you may not get that playground contact with your child’s teacher you are used to, but an email to a form tutor or year head will provide you with all of the information you need, while your teenager will be spared the obvious embarrassment of you being at the school gate. Do not worry if the problem cannot be solved by an email or telephone conversation - I do not know of a secondary school teacher who will not make an appointment to see you. Teachers at secondary school may seem unreachable but they are not. Communication between all parties involved in education is the key. We all know that if we verbalise a New Year’s resolution we are more likely to keep it into February. Even better if we can work on it with a friend. I know that I am more likely to go to the

gym if I am meeting my gym buddy there. It is equally as important to form that relationship between child, teacher and parent. The goals, aims and ambitions of the young will be phrased differently depending upon the school and educational stage that they are at. In primary school your child will be assessed on whether they are at the ‘expected level’. How can you turn that into a real life aim for you to help and support the development and progress of your child? Teachers know that children and parents may well need a little more guidance than that and give you specific tasks to work on and support your child with. As you are reading this think, where is the quiet area in your home? What is your routine? By supporting and ensuring that your child continues to develop beyond the classroom, will set up good routines for life.

For those who may be affected by a future Inheritance Tax liability, good estate planning can be important. Carl Lamb explains… IF YOU OWN your own home and have built up significant wealth through judicious savings and investments, then you may have concerns about the impact that Inheritance Tax (IHT) may have on the estate that you leave for your heirs. Every individual has an IHT-free allowance of £325,000, known as the Nil Rate Band. If you are married or in a civil partnership, you can leave as much of your estate as you like to your partner without incurring an IHT charge (but not if you are a cohabitee). If you leave some or all your estate to someone other than your spouse or civil partner, then that part of your estate will count towards your Nil Rate Band and anything over the allowance will be subject to a 40 per cent IHT charge. If you have any unused Nil Rate Band on your death you can pass it on to your spouse or civil partner, so the surviving spouse/civil partner can potentially amass a combined Nil Rate Band of up to £650,000. There is a further IHT allowance for anyone who is passing their main residence (or its value) on to their direct descendants (children and grandchildren). This will depend on the value of the property and could give an additional Nil Rate Band of up to £125,000 to an individual who dies in the 2018/19 tax year – and is due to go up to £175,000 by 2020/21. Any unused Residence Nil Rate Band can also be passed on to a spouse/civil partner on death, giving a potential total combined Nil Rate Band for a couple with a home to pass on to their children of a cool £1 million in 2020/21. Of course, you may have property and other assets totalling more than this figure: there are measures that you

can employ to mitigate a potential future IHT charge, by reducing the value of your estate during your lifetime using gifts or specialist trusts. There is much confusion about how gifts are handled when an estate is assessed for IHT. I’ve heard people expressing concern that the recipients may have to pay the tax on the gift if the estate is worth more than the Nil Rate Band on death. This is rarely the case: gifts are the first elements to be assessed in the IHT calculation and so any IHT due is more commonly taken from the remaining estate rather than being clawed back from a gift. There are annual gift allowances that can be applied during your lifetime. You can give up to a total of £3,000 per year without impacting your Nil Rate Band, plus you can give up to £250 per year to as many individuals as you like. Gifts to charities (and political parties) are also exempt from IHT. Wedding gifts are IHT-exempt too, up to specified limits. In addition, you can establish a pattern of regular giving from surplus income (not from investments or by selling assets) that can potentially be considered exempt. Do get advice if you would like to take advantage of the latter as it must be properly set up and documented to qualify for the exemption. If you make gifts that don’t qualify for the above exemptions, then some or all of it may be included in your estate for IHT purposes if you die within seven years of making the gift. Good planning throughout your lifetime can help to ensure that the value of your estate is managed to keep your future IHT liability under control. There are other measures that can be adopted such as trusts, but do get advice before setting up a trust as their tax treatment can be complex. From late November, right

up to Christmas Eve, office parties are in full swing; restaurants and pubs are alive with revellers; the shops are open all day and until late into the evening to give us plenty of time to buy a few festive gifts around busy work schedules and a hectic festive party schedule. IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE

Christmas Mark Nicholls looks at Christmas events, shows and activities to ke e p yo u o c c u p i e d ove r the festive season

As the nights start to draw in and Christmas

comes into view, it’s soon going to be time to plan a special day out or two to help the festivities along. Before long the pantomime season will begin to get into full swing with theatres across Norfolk and Suffolk staging traditional festive entertainment. Of course, with office parties and family meals, the social calendar can become a little busy for many people, but there’s always rooms to fit in a special event that will help to make the Christmas season particularly memorable. From the first Christmas lights switch-on, which set towns and city centres ablaze with colour and decorations as the festive shopping season gains momentum, to a carol service at the local village church, a festive show or panto, or a Christmas fair, there’s plenty of variety for everyone. As always over the festive holiday, there are also some more unusual events to support – or even become involved in – including the regular festive swims at places such as Cromer, Hunstanton or Gorleston that help raise funds for local charities. Of course, pantomime remains hugely popular for all the family and at a number of venues the shows run through from mid-December, over Christmas and New Year, and on into January. Larger venues - such as King’s Lynn Corn Exchange, which is staging Sleeping Beauty this year from December 7-31, or the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft, where Peter Pan runs from December 13-January 1 stage productions alongside smaller theatres in towns across the region and a number of amateur groups also put on a festive panto in village halls. One of the bigger shows is at Norwich’s Theatre Royal where Aladdin runs from December 12 until January 13. It stars Steven Roberts (Hollyoaks and The History Boys) in the title role where he endeavours to thwart

the plans of the evil Abanazar, played by Emmerdale and Casualty star Rik Makarem. The show also features Milkshake favourite KieraNicole Brennan as The Genie, alongside Norwich Theatre Royal panto stalwart Richard Gauntlett as Widow Twankey and Norfolk-based comedy favourite Ben Langley among the cast. For Steven, taking to the stage in Norwich will be particularly poignant. He explained: “Seeing the pantomime there was where I first fell in love with the theatre. It was my earliest memory of seeing something on stage. My family used to live near Lowestoft and we used to get on the train to see it. I remember it being so colourful and fun.” Turning on the Christmas lights is always a big day for any community and heralds the start of the festive shopping season. Switch-on dates to look out for in November include: Holt (14), Bury St Edmunds (15), Norwich (16), Burnham Market (18), Southwold (24), Gorleston (25) and Great Yarmouth (30) Christmas markets, large and small, are always great for mingling, having a mince pie with a glass of sherry or gluhwein and picking up interesting and unusual hand-made gifts. One of the biggest and most popular Christmas fayres in the region takes place in Bury St Edmunds, this year from November 22-25, with some 300 stalls. In Norwich, a Festive Fair is being held at The Forum from November 22-25 with stalls selling a host of jewellery, woodcraft, glassware, textiles, tins, pictures and paintings, along with tempting edible Christmas treats. Meanwhile, a Winter Market at Wells Maltings in Wells-next-the-Sea runs on December 8 and 9 and Holt Hall Christmas Fair is on November 24 and 25. I say, it really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
