A HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE

GLOBAL SOUNDS Bokanté are a new group founded by

musician and composer Michael League of the Grammy award-winning, New York-based instrumental jazz collective, Snarky Puppy. Hailed by Pulse Magazine as “nothing short of a world music super group”, Bokanté sees League joined by Snarky Puppy guitarists Chris McQueen and Bob Lanzetti, Guadeloupian vocalist Malika Tirolien, pedal and lap steel virtuoso Roosevelt Collier (Lee Boys, Karl Denson), and percussionists Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon, Sting), André Ferrari (Väsen) and Keita Ogawa (London Symphony Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma). Rich in the sound of both delta and desert, the unusual but evocative instrumentation blends musical worlds to convey a message of social awareness. “I wanted to put together a band that traces the blues from its roots in Africa and the Arab world throughout the diaspora and into a modern context,” says League. With eight musicians from four continents, writing and recording an album was a complex process. Tirolien and League co-wrote remotely, and would send Malika the music and a lyrical concept. She would write the lyrics and melody, demo the song and send it back. This ping pong approach resulted in the band’s debut album, Strange Circles. Singing in both Creole and French, Tirolien’s words draw pictures of the struggles we face in our world today – racism, the refugee crisis, a dying planet, apathy towards human suffering - but also offer words of thankfulness for those things which unify us, as well as hope for the future of our race. 30 Jan, The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, 7:30pm, £20, £5 under 25s. Some of the best wildlife in the country can be found in north Norfolk, and winter is the best time to see it! Here’s our top ten wildlife wonders to look out for during the winter months, says Kayla Dunne from Visit North Norfolk.

Blakeney Point is home to the largest seal colony in England and you can often spot a seal bobbing about in the water. In the middle of winter, grey seals have their pups, and they are suckled for three weeks by their mothers mainly on the beach. The safest way to see the seals and the pups are by a taking boat trip, which maintains a distance to avoid disturbing the seals. Seeing the seals and pups in their natural habitat, is really a sight not to be missed. North Norfolk offers some of the best bird watching in the UK and another great winter wildlife spectacle, is the sight of huge skeins of pink-footed geese. Over a third of the world’s population of this species spend the winter in Norfolk, peaking in numbers in January and February. At night, the geese roost together on remote parts of the coast. At dawn and dusk, the flights from their coastal roosts, to feed inland, are an amazing, and noisy, wildlife sight. Head to one of the nature reserves including NWT Holme Dunes and NWT Cley Marshes to get the best views. Also at NWT Cley Marshes, among the shingle ridge and also at NWT Salthouse Marshes, you can catch sight of snow buntings, small, special birds with dark wing tips. Snow buntings breed in the Arctic and come to Norfolk shores each winter. A visit to the nature reserves often rewards with a sighting of these winter birds. January and February is the best time to enjoy drakes in their droves. The drakes are also at their brightest (for mating) this time of year with a larger and rarer range of specifies to spot, such as goosander and smew and red-breasted mergansers. Along the coast, there is plenty of winter feather colour with wigeons, goldeneyes and ‘tufties’. This rainbow spectacle is one of Norfolk’s great winter wildlife sights, and well worth a visit to see the ducks at their finest.

Moving inland, if you cast your eye over a field or open farmland, you may be lucky to catch sight of hares loping across, or grey squirrels on a sunny winter day fetching their nut store as well as voles and wood mice foraging for food. You will also see many winter and spring fauna during January across fields, parks and hedgerows in North Norfolk. Keep an eye out for winter flowers such as dandelion, yarrow, red and white dead nettle, dandelion and flowering ground ivy. January brings the first snowdrops, dotted through woodland and parks, with a fine display at Walsingham Abbey. The carpets of snowdrops mingled with aconites, have naturalised throughout 18 acres of woodland and reappear each year. Wander along the banks of the River Stiffkey running through the Abbey grounds and you’ll be met with an amazing site. The Abbey has perfect conditions for snowdrops with deciduous woodland and humus-rich soil with good drainage. For a dash of winter colour, the National Trust’s Sheringham Park has a nationally important collection of rhododendrons, showcasing colour throughout much of the year. There is nothing like a wander through a bare and quiet winter woodland. Not only can you explore the twisted trunks of sweet chestnut and the tangles of hawthorn, it is easier to spot flocks of finches and the noisy long-tailed tits. Across Norfolk, you may also see nuthatches, treecreepers and marsh tits in their suitable habitats. Towards the end of January, we start to see signs of Spring. Primroses and celandines start appearing in hedgerows, attracting bees on mild days. As the days get lighter, listen out for bird song from thrushes, dunnocks and even the drumming of great spotted woodpeckers. At the end of February, frogs and toads emerge from hibernation and in the countryside, cock pheasants will be gathering their harems and you may be lucky to see the first hares boxing. So, wrap up warm, wear some comfortable boots and step out into the wild and natural north Norfolk coast and countryside this January. LAST CHANCE TO SEE

CIRCUS SPECTACULAR Regarded as one of the biggest Christmas

productions in Europe, the Christmas Spectacular Circus and Water Show bcombines the festive spirit of Christmas with the breath-taking magic of the circus. With the festive season all but done and dusted, now is the perfect time to avoid the rush

and catch this show before it packs its sequins for another year. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to marvel at Britain’s last dedicated circus venue, built in 1903 by George Gilbert. Expect comedy, acrobats, synchronised swimmers, and fun and thrills for the whole family Until 6 Jan, Hippodrome Circus, Great Yarmouth, times and prices vary. Tel: 01493 844172

BOWLED OVER It’s not often you get a world championship sporting event in the region, so to retain the prestigious competition for 21 years really is an achievement. That’s what has happened at the unlikely venue of Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton, which this month hosts the World Indoor Bowls Championship once more. Even if you are not familiar with the sport or a fan, this makes for compelling viewing. Anyone who fell in love with the drama created by GB duo Allcock and Bryant in the 1980s and 90s should head down to Hopton for a fortnight of competitive crowns from the latest generation of talent. Yes, there is coverage on the BBC, but nothing beats being there, and you can also enjoy a two-night residential break. 11-27 Jan, Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton, times and prices vary. STUCK IN THE MUDDLE Baby-faced funny

SEEING RED Let’s face it – January is a time when we could

all do with a bit of a laugh. With dark days, chilly nights and post-Christmas credit card bills to face, take a bit of mirth medication at the Red Card Comedy Club. No stranger to laughable antics, Carrow Road is the venue for this regular comedy showcase (every last Friday of the month) that has previously featured Michael McIntyre, Reginald D Hunter and Sarah Millican. Catch three top comics on their way up in intimate surroundings and give yourself a welcome break from winter blues. Headliner Andy Askins combines music with comedy, while Joey Page dresses like a rock star (but hopefully tells jokes like a comic). Self-modelled posh boy Ivo Graham completes the lineup, while compere Tom Webb glues everything together nicely. 25 Jan, Delia’s Canary Catering, Carrow Road, 8:30pm (doors 7pm), £15 on the door, discounts available. man Jason Manford seems to have been peddling his Manc mirth for decades now, yet he is arguably at the peak of his primetime fame. Having grown up watching the likes of local talent Peter Kay and Johnny Vegas around the pubs and clubs of Manchester, it was Kay who suggested Manford take a HND in media and performance at Salford University. The rest, as they say, is comedy history. Manford made a name for himself as a team captain on 8 out of 10 Cats before joining Absolute radio as a Sunday morning presenter, before finding mainstream success as the host of bizarre gameshow Big Heads. Yet it’s on stage that the affable Manford really shines. Past touring shows Turning Into My Dad and First World Problems were hits, and this Muddle Class show has all the makings of another. 17-18 Jan, Norwich Theatre Royel, 7.30pm, £10-£28.50. CIRCUS! SHOW OF SHOWS

GOING UNDERWORLD

Photos: HELEN MAYBANKS

It’s a good rule of thumb that the crazier the idea, the better the musical. A 1,200 page French novel; Beauty and the Beast beneath the Paris Opera House; Hamlet with puppets; a plotless collection of cat poems. These are the longest running musicals in British history. The best musicals of this century so far have been inspired by subjects as varied as the Jerry Springer Show, the Mormon bible, and the life of the first American treasury secretary. So the idea of a depression-era retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice with a folk-rock score is nothing outlandish. Hadestown began in 2010 as a concept album (like Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita) and has already been developed and staged by New York Theatre Workshop (that spawned Rent 25 years ago) and opens on Broadway in April. Folk singersongwriter Anais Mitchell and Broadway director Rachel Chavkin have expanded the original hour-long concept album to a 2 ½ hour “folk opera”, now fully staged and with plenty of power and volume and not a little bombast. The show relocates the Greek myth to a depression-era bar setting, in which

OUT of Town Orpheus (Reeve Carney), a hunky young man armed with a guitar and a falsetto, wins the heart and devotion of Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), a cleaner-looking young woman in a three-quarter length coat. She is lured into the underworld by Hades (Patrick Page), an old man armed with a grey beard and a voice that makes Barry White sound like a Bee Gee. How will she escape? If you know the myth you may have some idea. If you know anything about musicals, you’ll be clearer still. Act One is densely packed with catchy, funky songs, slickly staged by Chavkin and choreographer David Neumann, with moments of considerable visual flair. By half time it feels like an enticing and sometimes thrilling new musical. But it’s a show of two halves and the second act is a lumbering mess. No songs in Act Two rival Act One, the storytelling loses momentum and the one really powerful moment towards the end is over-played and over-long. The narrator figure, Hermes, so prominent in Act One, has next to nothing to do in the second half – a disappointing use of Broadway star Andre De Shields. The choral singing is terrific, though, and Noblezada sings with effortless dazzle and in the closing stages is very touching. Hadestown is a bold, brash, intermittently successful attempt to create an intimate and powerful piece out of epic source material and, the night I saw it, I must report that the audience was rapt, with many on their feet at the curtain call. With Broadway beckoning in a few short months, this show about the descent to the underworld needs a bit more work before it before it can raise the roof. I hope it does.

Continuing at Time and Tide is this excellent look back at 250 years of circus across the country, and with a special place in the region. Highlights of the show include the costume of Norfolk’s ‘Clown Roma’, aka Marcus La Touche - on display for the first time, a taxidermy ‘boxing kangaroo’ that performed in Norfolk, and four clown eggs – physical records of a clown’s unique face paint recreated onto a hen’s egg. As well as posters, costumes and props on display charting the history of this enduring form of entertainment, there are also a number of one-off events. On 4 January Jack Jay, the presenter and producer of Great Yarmouth’s Hippodrome, discusses the fascinating history of this iconic building. Clowning around is positively encouraged on 11 January as Cosmo the Clown from Foolhardy Circus presents Cosmo’s Boots, a meander through the history of clowning with personal anecdotes, props, costume, and jokes. The final Circus talk will be held on 8 February as Time and Tide welcomes Ruth Battersby Tooke, Curator of Costume and Textiles at Norfolk Museums Service, for Fancy That! A Brief History of Fantastical Dress. Until 3 Mar, Time and Tide, Great Yarmouth, times and prices vary. Tel: 01493 743930

Climbing is a sport on the up. The latest Sport England participation figures show climbing continues to be one of few sports with strong growth and climbing will, for the first time, feature at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. We caught up with the Managing Director of Highball Climbing Centre, Mike Surtees, to ask what all the fuss is about.

Tell us about climbing? Originally, climbing began as an outdoor activity and most people probably think of ropes, harnesses, snow-capped mountains or large granite cliffs. There are various styles (or disciplines) of climbing including rock climbing, sport climbing, bouldering, ice climbing, big wall climbing etc., each has it’s own rules or ethics. But climbing has changed in recent times as indoor climbing centres have provided climbing facilities where natural objectives are lacking – like in Norfolk! As a result, indoor climbing has very much become a sport in its own right.. Why has indoor climbing become so popular? The recent growth is mainly due to bouldering and increased television coverage. Bouldering is climbing without ropes and harnesses on low level climbing walls and requires less technical knowledge (no rope or harnesses) and therefore less equipment. It’s very accessible, quick to get started and a very social environment, unlike a gym, so people have been attracted by the fact they can socialise and exercise at the same time. Dedicated climbing centres tend to create positive, community atmospheres with knowledgeable staff and regular events. The good centres also have gym areas and serve awesome coffee too. How accessible is it? Very. Children are natural born climbers 16

and start climbing from a very young age; you’ve only got to look at parks and play areas where most of the equipment is based on climbing. My dad is still climbing at 71 and he’s not the oldest customer we ‘ve got! We’ve also helped people with varying disabilities get climbing by using clever rope systems to assist them and we also have some deaf and blind customers too. Climbing will be part of the 2020 Olympics, how will this work? The IFSC (world governing body) has been given two medals - male and female – by the IOC. The result is a brand new – and contentious - ‘triathlon format’ which requires athletes to compete across 3 disciplines to find the overall winner. These are bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing. What’s the best way for people to start climbing? The best place is at your local indoor climbing wall; I’d recommend going to an independent, dedicated Climbing Centre if possible, as the facilities tend to be better and the staff are more likely to be climbers themselves (and therefore more knowledgeable). Most will run taster sessions, family sessions, coaching courses, and some will also offer after school clubs and academies for young people. Where can people go climbing in Norfolk? I’d recommend Highball in Norwich (obviously), Fenrock in Outwell and South Norfolk Climbing Club, based in Morley.

Aside from these there are also climbing walls at the UEA Sportspark, Open (both Norwich), and Waterlane Leisure Centre, Lowestoft. Got a quick tip for beginners? Warm up, focus on your footwork, and don’t underestimate the importance of coaching if you want to improve quickly. Just a few hours of coaching will pay dividends in the long term.

This month sees the release of a new

comedy drama biopic, Stan & Ollie, which tells the ‘untold story’ of the world’s greatest comedy duo - Laurel and Hardy. The duo made up of an Englishman (Stan Laurel) and American (Oliver Hardy) first worked together in 1926. This movie concentrates on their latter years, when they finished the bulk of their movie commitments and embarked on a gruelling post-war theatre tour of the UK. This film brings together the talents of Steve Coogan and John C Reilly – as astute piece of casting. Coogan (best known to regional audiences for his portrayal of Alan Partridge) needs little introduction, while Reilly won an Oscar nomination in 2003 for Chicago, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe for this movie.

winning show received five-star reviews in the West End and now heads to Norwich. You’ll never look at your calendar the same way.

In many ways this is a typical buddy flick, with the love between the two lead characters (and their wives) clear as they battle with waning popularity for their slapstick humour in Hollywood. Ultimately, it’s a heart-warming tale, beautifully shot and affectionately portraying truly legendary performers, perfectly captured by Coogan and Reilly. Far from being another fine mess, this is a welcome reminder of two greats from the Golden Era of cinema and showbusiness. On general release from 11 January.

ANIMAL MAGIC There is still time to

For a more recent slice of history and on until 5th January, make a visit to Orla Kiely: A Life in Pattern at EAST GalleryNUA (Bridewell Alley, free entry). A household name and one that has inspired many designers in her wake, view one hundred handbags by Orla from across the years. It’s a small, spotlight exhibition so afterwards there’ll be plenty of time for sales shopping! From history to nature, Norfolk Outdoor Adventures run amazing Winter Coffee & Nature Kayak Safaris on the Broads, on 5th, 26th January; 2nd, 16th February and 2nd March. Martin Rendle - the brains behind these experiences - says that the winter months are the best time to take a kayak tour. The Broads are so much quieter and the light is beautiful, plus the kayaks access areas of the Broads that larger boats cannot reach. Being low down in the water also means you get a very good perspective of the wildlife on offer. Tours cost £35 including equipment and tuition. Sticking with nature, Pensthorpe Natural Park is another place to venture. Don’t miss a Floodlit Bird Feed session where you can sit in the park’s viewing gallery, while resident bird experts share their knowledge

It’s almost the New Year, and ahead of us, January is looking as busy as ever – in a good way. With a spring in our step we can think about what we want to do rather than what we need to do. It’s time to take some me time! A winter walk conjures up all manner of images: early morning icy, crispy hedgerows; frozen woodlands and busy wildlife; and because we live in a county that offers so much, bracing walks along long stretches of quiet beach. But if you fancy a walk with a bit more going on, in a city atmosphere, then for three dates (28, 29 and 31 December) you can take a walk with a twist: a Festive Winter Walk in Norwich. With historic stories as you go, delivered by Norwich’s excellent tour guides, this is a sociable way to spend 90 minutes. And with each tour starting at 11am, there’s time for a cosy pub lunch afterwards. Tours can be booked in advance online (thenorwichshop.co.uk), or on the day (depending on availability) at the Norwich Tourist Information Centre 01603 213999. Those who love history will also be interested in Norwich Castle’s Museum Highlights Tour which is free with museum entry on the 12th January. Taking place for one hour at 2.30pm, visitors will be taken around the galleries, picking out

A trip to the theatre after Christmas is as popular as ever, and there are several wonderful shows to take in, come the New Year. My First Panto: Jack & The Beansprout is playing at The Garage until 5th January, whilst Norwich Theatre Royal brings the curtain down on Aladdin on the 13th. Hot on its heels there’s the Russian State Ballet of Siberia between 14th - 16th January. And for those who love classical music, then see Britten Sinfonia: Elder conducts Mahler and Brahms on the 19th. The month closes with The Royal Shakespeare Company returning to Norwich with a contemporary production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet - 29th January to 2nd February. Plus, last chance to see! Saturday 5th January is the final day to experience the Tunnel of Light, so if you haven’t yet ventured into Norwich or you want to give it a final wave goodbye, then make sure you plan this in. envisage the lighthouse, pier and those candy-coloured beach huts. While the dessheds will be out of the range of most visitors (The Folly beach hut on the promenade was recently on the market with Durrants for an eyewatering £150,000), everyone can enjoy the traditional pier’s many delights and scale the heights of the lighthouse.

previous generations. Time may have stood still, but that doesn’t mean the town has the air of a living museum or mired in nostalgia – it offers the perfect combination of the new and the old, while also appealing to well-heeled visitors used to the creature comforts of the city during their visit. So while many people come to Southwold year after year for the lighthouse, the pier, the beach huts

Built in 1900, the 623-foot pier juts confidently from the coast into the North Sea. While many piers around Britain have fallen into disrepair or disrepute, the Southwold example is thriving. You’ll still find eccentric attractions (such as the Under The Pier Show) and ice cream, but also quality dining options like the Boardwalk Restaurant. Plus of course, probably the best view of Southwold.

However, Southwold Lighthouse may beg to differ. Built in 1887 and standing 31 metres tall, tours of the working lighthouse are available during season, but it represents a great photo opportunity all year round. In fact, the British seaside aesthetic of the town makes traditional Southwold thoroughly modern and perfect Instagram material.

and sandy beaches, there is more to enjoy in the town at any time of year. Yes, there are timeless fairweather activities like catching crabs or messing about on the water at the boating lake (before taking a much-deserved afternoon tea), but there is more to explore. There’s the Adnams brewery tour, for instance – a fine example of a Southwold stalwart that refuses to stand still after more than 670 years. Book a place on their tour and find out all about the beer making process, enjoy a guided tasting session and leave with a signature bottle of beer to enjoy at home. And it’s not just beer at Adnams – the

THE UNDER THE PIER SHOW!

Well worth a visit... Since 2001 Southwold Pier has hosted an arcade with a range of automata, machines and games designed by Tim Hunkin, an English engineer, cartoonist, writer, and artist who lives in Suffolk. He is best known for creating the Channel Four television series The Secret Life of Machines.

Adnams Copper House Distillery was opened in 2010 and now manufacturers award-winning vodka and gin. Regular sessions are held where guests can learn all about the process and even make their own bespoke gin. Private tours of both the brewery and distillery are also available. Artistry of a different flavour is evident at Southwold’s growing collection of boutique galleries. There’s the eponymous gallery from local artists Serena Hall, showcasing her own work inspired by the town as well as other artists drawing on regional influences. Buckenham Galleries meanwhile offers a wide and changing selection of contemporary

Shops may be struggling on Britain’s high streets but the boutiques in Southwold are thriving, thanks to an eclectic mix of quality brands and unique products. No meat lover should leave Southwold without a visit to Mills and Sons - these guys are a TV series in waiting. The refurbished interior is a welcoming space to sample beers and

Norfolk New Year It’s the New Year and a time to make resolutions. Visit Norfolk have offered some suggestions about things you might want to resolve to do in 2019. They’re reason enough to plan a trip. www.visitnorfolk.co.uk

1

s n o i t resolu

Visit the country’s largest seal colony at Blakeney Point. You can walk along the 4-mile shingle spit from Cley-next-the-Sea or take a relaxing boat ride from Morston Quay.

2

Breckland in the west of the county has the best overall climate in the country… yes, really! Enjoy relaxing walks in wild landscapes, through the magnificent Thetford Forest and explore Pingos and Neolithic flint works.

3

You can walk in the footsteps of the first known humans to come to the UK when you’re on the beach at Happisburgh. This is the Deep History Coast, where the world’s largest and best-preserved mammoth skeleton was found. Oh, and the prehistoric version of the Swiss Army Knife!

4

We reckon Norfolk has the best birdwatching in the country, borne out by our brilliant Premier League wildlife reserves such as Cley-next-theSea, Snettisham and Titchwell.

7

Norfolk has the private home of the Royal Family, at Sandringham. We say private, it’s actually open to the public when The Queen’s not in residence, so you can see where Meghan Markle enjoyed Christmas with her new in-laws and husband Prince Harry.

Oh, and we have over 90 miles of stunning coastline, with vertiginous cliffs to walk along, pristine sandy beaches, and tidal saltmarshes and creeks which provide sumptuous shellfish.

9

We have more ‘Downton Abbeys’ than you can shake a stick at, including the wonderfully Palladian Holkham Hall, Blickling Hall where you might want to hunt out the unique pyramid mausoleum, and Houghton Hall, where you can enjoy the miniature battlefields as well as contemporary art.

10

The unique Norfolk Broads has over 125 miles of navigable waterways – that’s more than Amsterdam or Venice has! And most of them are man-made. Who knew?! Yes, they’re actually the result of medieval peat diggings. They’re also the UK’s newest National Park, and the only National Park with a city in it.

6

Our Fine City of Norwich is the country’s best-preserved medieval settlement, with a superb Norman cathedral and imposing castle. But it’s not set in aspic, oh no! There’s brilliant shopping with two malls, five department stores and fab independent stores in The Lanes, plus great dining options, the largest covered permanent market in northern Europe, nightlife and culture.

5

Norfolk is a county of festivals. The annual Norfolk and Norwich Festival, spread across two weeks in May, is the country’s oldest arts festival and still one of the largest. On the coast you’ll find the Crab and Lobster Festival in Cromer and Sheringham and Maritime Festival in Great Yarmouth. Also in Great Yarmouth, in June, there’s going to be an amazing two-day Air Show. Make sure you book your stay well in advance.

Christmas is over... What shall we do now? Elizabeth Parker discusses the many things to do with the children to beat the post-Christmas blues. Visiting Colchester is a family favourite past time, whether it is for a day trip or a weekend stay, Colchester has many things to offer the family. The first place to explore is the castle and park. Walk over a bridge into the Norman castle, one of the largest in Europe. You have the opportunity to hire an electronic device, always a favourite with the children, but this is different as it enables you to see what certain areas of the castle would have looked like in The Norman period, you really do experience a step back in time. The displays are informative and interesting with different interactive activities throughout the castle. I recommend buying a year pass because once you have been you will definitely go back to the different activities that are on through the year. www.cimuseums.org. uk/visit/venues/colchester-castle In the grounds of the castle, although totally separate from the castle is the loveliest of parks and play areas. The beauty of this park is that it is suitable for a wide range of ages. Both of my boys aged 9 and 4 love to go and explore the different things to climb on, slide down and swing on. www.colchester.gov.uk/castle-park/ Whenever we go away for longer than a couple of days we always look for a zoo and Colchester zoo is a real treat of a zoo. It is a sheltered zoo so would be perfect for the colder days. The zoo is large and on a hill, which makes it ideal for walking off the Christmas excesses or cabin fever. A delightful train takes you into a monkey enclosure where you can get up close and personal with some mischievous mammals, as well as many other animal experiences such as feeding the giraffes and elephants. They are also offering a January visit to the zoo for a bargain of £10 if you buy an eticket. www.colchester-zoo.com Sounds tempting? Then the place to stay is Lee Wick Farm Glamping, a delightful

place to stay whether you preference is a pod for that back to nature experience or a countryside cottage. All of the options that they have available will provide a perfect base for your mini winter break to Colchester. www.leewickfarm.co.uk Have you ever considered becoming an annual pass holder to Africa Alive? Whilst the winter months don’t seem the ideal time to invest in a pass to the zoo it is an experience that keeps on giving all year round. The animals behave differently at different times of the year, making it the ideal opportunity to really learn about how animals live and exist throughout the seasons. Having a pass makes the visit to

A new place of discovery for myself is Holkham and I plan to take the family there as our ‘What shall we do now?’ place to explore in 2019. the zoo a completely different experience: you can just go for a couple of hours and see you favourite animals, play in the park and enjoy a coffee, or you can go for the whole day, the spring and summer will soon be here and if I dare mention next Christmas, visiting Santa in his grotto was a fabulous Christmas treat without the queues often associated with seeing the great man in red. www.africa-alive.co.uk Memories can be created in many different ways, one of my favourite times has been painting pottery at the delightful Willow Gallery Ceramic Painting Studio which is based in the Octagon Barn,

Framingham Earl just outside Norwich. With a whole range of different pieces to choose to paint, there is something for everyone. From money boxes, to mugs and plates or even those cherished handprints. You can either choose to join in with the children or to sample a relaxing cup of coffee with a piece of delicious home baked cake and when the painting is over you could have a browse in their boutique gift shop adjacent to the studio. www.willowgallerynorfolk.co.uk/ We can’t live in this beautiful county without taking the time to visit the coast. Before writing this article I asked my 9 year old where his favourite place was to go and I was very surprised and pleased with his answer. He said ‘Dunwich, we always have a really lovely time when we go there’. Indeed we do. Whether it is a blustery, cold yet exhilarating walk, or throwing pebbles into the choppy seas, or maybe walking in the heathlands following one of the trails that Dunwich Heath has to offer, always followed by a trip to the coffee shop where there is always the difficult decision of which cake to have or shall it be the scone of the month? Then up to the viewing tower to look over the amazing views of the heathland or sea whilst you relax and enjoy your coffee. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ dunwich-heath-and-beach A new place of discovery for myself is Holkham and I plan to take the family there as our ‘What shall we do now?’ place to explore in 2019. I went there with a group of friends and was amazed at what Holkham had to offer. A completely different coast to my usual haunts. Rolling sand dunes for miles to see with a woods behind them and sea in front. Then up to Holkham Hall with amazing parkland for exploring, a park area for the children who need more than just the freedom to run, a masses of wild deer to wonder and amaze at. www.holkham.co.uk 27

The Food of

Places&Faces Ž picks six of the best dining options for a memorable Valentine’s Day dinner 30

Food&Drink

It’s that time of year again where couples up and down the country sit down for a romantic meal to declare their unswerving love for one more year. While the concept may seem a tad strange for couples used to dining out together on more than one occasion, the tradition found favour in the dark days of dining out – when a trip to a restaurant was a special and rare event. Certainly, when I was just a boy some 40 years ago, restaurant excursions were few and far between, while my son hardly blinks at the prospect of a Michelin starred meal. How times have changed. However, the thinking behind Valentine’s Day including a special candlelit meal for two, away from the kids and stresses of everyday life is a robust one, and this romantic tradition shows little signs of dwindling. In fact, it remains one of the busiest nights of the year for restaurants, bistros and gastropubs in the region, with advance booking essential. With that in mind, Places&Faces is jumping the gun (or should that be Cupid’s bow and arrow) to bring you a selection of the best places to take your significant other on 14 February.

BRASTED’S Renowned as a wedding venue, we bet there will be lots of couples revisiting the scene of their union at Brasted’s. Located in the pretty village Framington Pigot, just 4 miles from the city centre of Norwich, the 2AA Rosette restaurant is made for lovers. The surroundings are just the right side of formal (think white linen table cloths but without the pretention of some slick city venue). The a

la carte menu typically features such dishes as partridge, turbot, mussels, lamb loin, and scallops – as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Chef Patron Chris ‘Buzz’ Busby delivers a superb menu packed with seasonal favourites and their ‘legendary’ desserts. What more could a couple ask for? Perhaps an overnight stay in one of their six boutique rooms. Tel: 01508 491112

HINTLESHAM HALL This Grade 1 listed, 16th century property in the Suffolk countryside provides genuine wow factor from the offset. Sweep up to the majestic manor house and enjoy a champagne reception with canapes in the lounge before embarking on a fabulous five-course menu from chef Alan Ford. The grand dining rooms are suitably special but the food

here is the real attraction – from the likes of lobster and scallop chowder to rum chocolate ganache. If you are looking to make an impression, Hintelsham Hall is the place for you. Combine with an overnight stay for enough Brownie points to last you all year. Tel: 01473 652334

1st rule of engagement Diamonds DELIA’S RESTAURANT & BAR Delia Smith’s stylish restaurant at the home of Norwich City may not seem at first glance like the most romantic destination (unless of course you are Canaries fans) but look beyond the sporting connection to see an eatery that’s a Valentine’s Day winner. There is also a special Valentine’s menu on offer for £55 per person which begins with a Peach Bellini on arrival before tucking into head chef Nigel Ramsbottom’s carefully crafted Italian menu. Enjoy fabulous regional specialities from all over Italy, with mains including sea bass, steak, lasagne or risotto. Don’t be fooled by the familiar-sounding dishes – these popular classics are elevated to the highest levels. A classy and refined dining experience drawing on the fine food of love from Italy. Nothing scream romance quite like a French restaurant, and this Bury St Edmunds restaurant has all the chic glamour you’d expect from a night out in Paris. You don’t have to take our word for it – on Tripadvisor Maison Bleue was voted in the top 10 of Britain’s Fine Dining Restaurants for three years running. The modern and contemporary restaurant prides itself on delivering fresh prime ingredients given an innovative twist from chef Pascal. Beautifully presented dishes include a heavy seafood influence, as well as locally sourced fine beef and lamb, and desserts to die for. With impeccable service and an enviable wine selection, Maison Bleue proves you don’t have to hop the Channel for the finest French experience. Tel: 01284 760623

THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE Steeped in architectural history, the high moulded ceilings and grand chandeliers of Norwich’s famed Assembly House make for a stunning dining venue. The Georgian grandeur makes for a fabulous experience, especially when coupled with fine food. Of particular note is the restaurant’s vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options – handy to know if either diner has special requirements. Expect dishes such as squash and hazelnut gnocchi, butter-roasted pheasant breast or grilled fillet of sea bass. Most surprising of all may be the affordable prices – the Assembly House has a reputation for excellent food at reasonable prices. If you are looking for a memorable night out in Norwich, look no further. Tel: 01603 626402

THE MULBERRY RESTAURANT “Cooking is gutsy and boldly flavoured,” according to the Michelin Guide 2019, and who are we to argue. Thetford’s finest has built an enviable reputation based on regularly changing menus, welcoming atmosphere and, of course, the very finest cuisine. The Mulberry offers top quality Mediterranean and English classics using the very best ingredients combined with knowledge and skill. Typical menu items include seared Scottish scallops, grilled chump chops of salt marsh lamb, and crispy fried goat cheese croquettes. The interior is unfussy and comfortable, allowing the food to shine without distraction. If you can grab a table, you’ll be in the good books (and not just the Michelin Guide). Tel: 01842 824 122

n o s i n e V with

January is really when the winter comes into its own, after the warmth and excitement of Christmas and New Year has come and gone January rolls round like a cold breeze through the window. January and February are definitely the coldest months of the year and after the indulgence of the festive season this is when we all get onto our health kick and want to eat nutritious and super healthy. However, sometimes you just need something hearty to fill you up on these cold winter evenings. Nothing is more of a delight for a weekend in January to blow the cobwebs away with a brisk walk either on one of our beautiful Norfolk beaches or in the woodlands around Norwich. So after your cold winters walk you sit down by your open fire or log burner and a good hearty plate of food is what everyone is pining for. This one is super simple, a pearl barley risotto with Swiss chard leaves and beautiful roasted venison. Venison is super lean and the barley is rich and really helps to fill you up, then you have the super greens of the Swiss chard giving us the vitamins we all need. Enjoy this great winter warmer alongside a fantastic bold red and you will be set up for the perfect weekend.

34

Venison

• 1 Large Loin of Venison preferably Roe or Fallow Deer (Off the bone and trimmed of all sinew)

Pre heat the oven to 180˚C. Place a small frying pan onto a high heat. Lightly season the venison loin with salt. Once the pan is hot add a splash of rapeseed oil to the pan and carefully place the loin into the hot pan. Turn the venison loin round slowly until well coloured all over. This should take about 5 mins. Then place in oven for 8 mins turning every 2 mins. Once cooked remove and allow to rest for at least 10mins before serving.

Swiss Chard Leaves

• 1 Bunch of Swiss Chard (Rip off the leaves and pickle the stems for a later dish) • 50g Salted Butter

Place a large pot of salted water on to a high heat and bring to the boil. Once boiling throw in the leaves and blanch for 2-3 mins, remove from the pot and drop into ice cold water. Once cold remove the leaves and dry in-between kitchen towel. When ready to serve, warm the butter in a small pan. Once the butter is foaming add the Swiss chard leaves and warm through. Season with sea salt and white pepper. Serve hot.

Serves 4-6

Pearl Barley

• 200g Pearl Barley (Soaked over night in water) • 1 Leek (Thinly sliced) • 250ml White Wine • 2 Litres of Beef Stock (Needs to be boiling) • 1/2 bunch of flat leaf Parsley finely chopped • 1 bunch of Chervil finely chopped • 75g Parmesan Cheese (Grated) • 250g Salted Butter

Place a large pot onto a medium heat, add 50g of butter, add the leeks and slowly start to sweat off. Once fully cooked add the pearl barley and white wine. Let the white wine reduce by 3/4. Add enough chicken stock to cover and stir well, let the barley cook a little like risotto so after 5mins you will have to add more stock and more until the barley is soft and tender. To finish the Barley add the rest of the Butter and the Parmesan, stir well and at the last moment add herbs. Check seasoning and serve. To Serve Spoon the Barley risotto into the middle of a bowl or plate, wrap the Swiss Chard loosely around the barley and place the slice venison on top. Serve with a nice spicy shiraz.

Sutherland House Joe Marritt headed to Southwold for a warm welcome and a delectable dining experience in a building steeped in history.

SUTHERLAND HOUSE 56 High Street, Southwold, Suffolk IP18 6DN 01502 724 544 enquiries@sutherlandhouse.co.uk www.sutherlandhouse.co.uk

Located toward the top of Southwold high street Sutherland House is a building with a rich history and a fascinating story to tell. The building is one of the oldest in Southwold and through its relationship with King James the Second, High admiral of the navy, played a part in the Battle of Sole Bay. A naval engagement between an Anglo French fleet and a Dutch fleet that took place in June 1672. Although this engagement is slipping back into the mists of history it was certainly significant for the time, involving 168 warships, 20,738 men and more than 4000 cannon. History records the

toward sea food, and with time and passion devoted to sourcing premium local ingredients and reducing food miles. If fish is not your thing, there are certainly other choices, with the restaurant building a strong local reputation for the quality of its steak.

If you stay at Sutherland House the black pudding also forms part of the breakfast.

pickled beetroot that it is served with. Starters dispensed with we prepare for the main courses. In this case pan roasted Barbary duck breast for Helen and fillet of turbot for me and to accompany we choose the Pesto Roasted Mediterranean vegetables and enjoy our food. The duck is served with Fondant Potato and a Butternut squash puree and arrives beautifully presented. The turbot is served with a truffle croquette a lobster bisque and some very flavoursome bacon and crispy kale. The turbot itself is delicious and is balanced by the crispness of the kale and the saltiness of the bacon.

To prepare for the meal we enjoy a warming carrot and coriander amuse – bouche. We then move onto the starters, Helen opting for the seared Scottish scallops, while I enjoy the mackerel pate. The scallops are served with a parsnip puree, mushrooms, crispy pancetta, and a deliciously light home made black pudding. If you stay at Sutherland House the black pudding also forms part of the breakfast. The mackerel pate tastes very fresh with the flavour of the fish enhanced by the sharper

battle as an honourable draw. Fast forward 350 years and today the building is lovingly maintained and its history celebrated. It now provides both a fascinating window into the region’s martial past and the location for a nationally recognised restaurant with rooms. As guests of the restaurant we arrive on a wet and blustery evening and are grateful for the warm welcome and cheery greeting from proprietors Andy and Kinga Rudd. Shown through to the dining room we take our seats and enjoy the ambience. Welcoming drinks enjoyed we start to focus on the menu, which is varied but with a strong leaning

At this point in the evening the inevitable debate begins, pudding or no? We come to the conclusion that it would be churlish not to, and are soon looking again at the menu. Bread and butter pudding with vintage marmalade ice cream and sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream are soon with us. And are soon gone. Having enjoyed three very nice courses over coffee we are left a little time to ponder some of the legends from the buildings history, not least the story of a beautiful red head – said to be the lover of an Earl who returns as a ghostly apparition to haunt the building. But that’s for another day.

lifestyle, the all-new Grandland X SUV has off-road appeal, a raised seating position, good all-round visibility, and plenty of room for up to five passengers and their luggage. “Our goals for the Grandland X were to create a rugged yet dynamic design, while also managing to balance style and functionality,” said Brit Mark Adams, Vauxhall/Opel’s Vice President, Design. “We also aimed for an elegant, upmarket feel with carefully crafted surfaces and interfaces, plus the consistent use of high quality materials throughout.” Vauxhall introduces its fully electronic IntelliGrip traction control on Grandland X. It ensures that the car always remains stable no matter what the surface, as the wheels are always able to find optimal grip. There are five modes available to the driver to select from: Normal/On-road, Snow, Mud, Sand and ESP Off.

dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family. Designed to fill the white space between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport, the Velar offers levels of luxury, refinement and all-terrain capability never before seen in the mid-size SUV segment. Created from a clean sheet using Jaguar Land Rover’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture, the Velar represents the next chapter of the Range Rover success story. Velar is defined by a visually reductive approach and meticulous attention to precision in every detail. Velar’s design is beautifully balanced, from its powerful proportions to its continuous waistline through to the taut tapered lines of the rear. The generous wheelbase contributes significantly to its elegance while helping to provide a spacious interior. Advanced technology is pivotal to the contemporary design: the full-LED headlights are the most slender ever to appear on a production Land Rover vehicle. HOW TO CHOOSE THE

correct

This month our resident interior design expert Ju l i e H a n d f o r t h - D o i d g e t a l k s a b o u t t h e use of colours in interior design.

THE COLOUR WHEEL is a fail-safe

way of working out what works with what for anyone who works with colour; interior designers, artists and architects. In the modern colour wheel you begin with red, blue and yellow as they are what all other colours derive from. The secondary colours are then made by mixing two of the primaries together… you will probably remember doing this at school in art classes. Tertiary colours are then made by mixing a primary with a secondary to give us lime green, turquoise, magenta, peach, deep purple and so much more. There are boundless tints, shades and tones wheeled out, by mixing different combinations, all called tertiary colours. The classic colour wheel is made up of 12 hues – it is sometimes simpler to refer to one half the cool colours and the other the warm hues You only have to look at the vast range of paints on offer in our DIY stores to see how paint manufacturers have developed such a large range of colours – in fact you can now have paint made to any colour or shade to match your colour palettes. When planning an interior design concept I think back to the colour wheel or circle as it is known. This is made up of 12 hues. I like to divide one half into cool colours and the other into warm, consisting of primary and secondary colours and the relationship between all. Colour within your home is personal, it makes a statement and can reflect on the personality of the person that resides within. The days of magnolia everywhere is outdated. Paint companies introduce new colours each season and like the fashion industry goes a full circle in the passing of time. To get the desired effect in your room make sure you use the right colours to enhance the size of a room and also to make it cosier. Before you take the plunge, try out the interior designer’s trick of making a mood board. If you’re planning to redecorate, you might have seen lots of pictures that you like in magazines, but you can’t really get an idea of how that style or scheme might work in your own house without trying it out on some scale. A mood board helps you focus and helps you keep your ideas together, so that you don’t start going over the top - it’s a reminder of what you need and don’t need and what colours you want to work with. It’s easy to get distracted and start buying all sorts when you’re redecorating, only to find it doesn’t work when it’s all put together. A mood board helps you sort this process out. Some people find this process overwhelming so me and my team are on hand to guide you on colour whether its paint for walls or fabrics for drapery. We will listen to your ideas and take them on board with sometimes just minimal tweaking. We can help you bring all of your colours and texture together.

Certain colours are also considered to have healing powers and are often used to treat physical illness and mental impairments – we have worked on a number of projects that we have had the pleasure to be involved in over the years. Done be frightened to have a go at colour matching - be brave be bold but most importantly have fun. Here are some helpful notes to help you understand the colour wheel:

Hue: a colour or shade. The attribute of discernable colour i.e. red, blue, yellow etc. Primary Colours: Red, blue and yellow Secondary Colours: Green, orange and purple Tertiary colours: mix a primary with a secondary, and what do you get? Lime, turquoise, magenta etc. Add white, black or grey to create a different tint, tone or shade from the original. Tone: The particular quality of brightness, deepness, or hue of a shade of a colour. The general effect of colour or light and shade in a picture. Adding grey to a colour effects the tone Shade: A colour, especially with regard to how light or dark it is or as distinguished from one nearly like it: “various shades of blue”. Add black to alter the shade of a colour. Tint: A shade or variety of a colour. Add white to change the tint. If you would like some expert advice you could always pop down to see the JHD Interiors showroom.

Following a £101 million refurbishment, The Peninsula Beijing is once again at the top of its game, bowling guests over with elegant new interiors, sterling service and every amenity you could wish for, including a large indoor swimming pool, a world-class spa, tip-top dining and a luxury shopping arcade. Kate Morfoot, leading travel writer from w w w. l o v e t o e a t t o t r a v e l . c o m m a d e m e m o r i e s in the Maldives on Scubaspa Ying.

S

cubaspa ‘Ying’ and

her twin sister ‘Yang” are fivestar floating resorts based in the Maldives. It is a clever concept combining a decadent escape with fine dining, scuba diving, snorkelling and indulgent spa treatments offered over four or seven nights on a super boat cruising around the Indian Ocean. Can life really get any better? You can take your watery escape on either of the 50 metre long vessels created exclusively for luxury scuba diving and spa experience each catering for up to 40 guests. This incredible getaway in one of the most beautiful parts of the world begins from Malé Harbour which is across the road from Velana International Airport where the Scuapspa dive boat ‘dhoni’ is ready to pick you up and deliver you to one of the two floating resorts of your choice. There are three packages available from which guests must choose one. The options are: Scuba holiday, 15-17 dives, Spa holiday, eight spa treatments or Scuba & Spa holiday, six dives and four spa treatments. It’s a great holiday for couples where one is a certified diver and the other isn’t because of the flexibility in the packages. I chose the scuba and spa option as I recently undertook the Open Water PADI course and qualified at OBLU by Atmosphere Helengeli Island resort in the Maldives before arriving on the luxurious Scubaspa vessel. My husband opted for the spa package as he wanted to relax, snorkel, sunbathe. There is spacious accommodation with a mixture of nine suites and ten cabins all en suite with air conditioning. Cabins either have a panoramic sea view or port lights. Guests can choose from queen, king or twin bed combinations. Our Sea Star cabin was bright, clean, with modern décor and a comfortable bed. The cabin was cleaned daily with fresh drinking water available in the room. On our arrival onboard Ying, we were given a short informative briefing by the manager, Mario. This included general boat safety, diving and spa information, meal times and fun things to expect during the holiday. After the briefing we met some of the other guests onboard who were from all corners of the globe, including Australia, Austria, Poland, Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Russia and the UK. The professional dive team are highly skilled and trained ensuring each dive is planned safely. I was aware of my diving inexperience and limitations however, I was also excited as I had only just qualified

for my Open Water PADI. Myself and my dive buddy Natalie from Hong Kong were assigned to a dive group which included two Australians, Gail and John and headed by a wonderful lady called Riks who came from Denmark. The Dive Master briefed us before each dive explaining in particular where the dive boat would drop us, potential currents, maximum dive depth and minimum air and safety stops. He would describe what you would most likely encounter on your dive (from black tip reef sharks, eagle rays and manta!). Typically there would be three dives per day starting from 6am, 10:30am, 2.15pm or a night dive. Riks was excellent in making sure that the allocated six dives I chose within my package were well within my capabilities, each exciting memorable dive lasting around 35-50 minutes depending on my air consumption. The Rasdhoo Madivaru dive site around the Ari Atoll features a healthy reef full of interesting caverns and coral overhangs. It also has a ridge that attracts a large number of hammerhead sharks.

It’s a great holiday for couples where one is a certified diver and the other isn’t because of the flexibility in the packages. On one early morning, I dived to see grey reef sharks, white tipped sharks along with triggerfish, blue fusiliers and my favourite find, a napoleon wrasse! At Fish Head, I took another early morning dive that was tremendous, my confidence at depth was growing. In the Maldives an Open Water diver can dive to a maximum depth of 20m instead of 18m that applies in the UK. I dived the maximum depth and encountered grey reef sharks, morary eels, Hawksbill turtles, shoals of colourful fusiliers, angelfish, clown fish and many checkerboard wrasse. The coral on this dive at Fish Head was colorful, there were walls of beautiful overhangs with stunning fish darting next to it. I was able to take a night diving course on board as I wanted to get close to and meet the nurse sharks. The short course which

included a questionnaire and a quick theory session with Riks together with a briefing session with the Dive Master, allowed me to take my first Night Dive at famous Alimatha. There were many divers who too were excited to experience the nurse sharks who behave like inquisitive puppies under water. Diving at night is both scary and surreal but also calm. With our dive team all with our torches turned on we followed our instructions to slowly descend to the bottom at a depth of 12m and wait on the sandy seabed. No sooner had I got to the bottom when a large sting ray glided slowly over my head followed by a nurse shark that passed me by. Within minutes, nurse sharks where elegantly brushing in and out of our diving group with some circling above our heads. Are they really that friendly? My air consumption hit an all-time high as of course I was slightly anxious. But yes, they are, stay calm, keep your hands to yourself and just watch as they play, swim in and out and glide very closely past you, they won’t harm you as long as you respect them. Scubaspa offers many memorable encounters with the underwater world including snorkeling with a whale shark. There is a particular area at Maamigil where diving and snorkeling with whale sharks is popular, it’s very busy and although the shark seemed happy, you need to be a fairly strong swimmer to cope with the amount of pushy humans. My Aqualung scuba diving equipment included the compulsory dive computer, mask and snorkel, a Mikron breathing regulator and a 3mm ‘Mahe’ ‘shorty’ wetsuit. My kit also included Phazer Fins with 5mm Ellie Ergo boots and an Outlaw BCD (buoyancy control device) which is perfect for overseas travel. If you don’t have your own kit, you can hire diving gear from Scuabspa.

It’s important to have good travel insurance if you are considering water sports. I was insured by UK travel insurance provider, InsureandGo, and was able to enjoy my scuba diving adventures safe in the knowledge that this activity was included as standard within my policy. The Scubaspa dive centre is based on a separate 19 metre ‘dhoni’ boat which accompanies the main ship. There is also a dinghy boat to take guests to nearby paradise islands for sunbathing or reef snorkelling. Snorkelling proved to be just as fabulous as diving on occasions, it was also enjoyable to step off the boat and onto some idyllic white sand flats surrounded by the beautiful azure Indian Ocean to take pictures and sunbathe. With water temperatures of around 28 degrees and so much to see, scuba diving and snorkelling opens up another world of ocean floating holidays. For those not scuba diving, Scubaspa has dinghy boat available to take guests to nearby paradise islands

for sunbathing or reef snorkelling. Snorkelling could be just as fabulous as diving on some occasions and it was nice to step off the boat onto some idyllic white sand flats between the azure Indian Ocean. For those not snorkelling, diving, sunbathing or reading then the SPA was the only option! The SPA covers 300 meters of the boat with five treatment rooms including a couples room and an outside deck for relaxation. My husband was on the spa package and made the most of the Swedish, Balinese and sports massages while I opted for the specialist Ayurveda massages and reflexology with Abi, a former trained Ayurveda nurse now therapist. Abi also takes the Sunrise Yoga class on the deck from 6.15am which includes gentle stretching, mantras and breathing techniques. This was a wonderful way to start the day if an early morning dive or a ‘lie in’ wasn’t on my agenda! Breakfast, lunch and dinners are included in your Scubaspa stay together with a night time beach BBQ lit up by candles, showcasing the Milky Way and green plankton sparkling in the sea. The buffet-style meals were of consistently fresh quality and delicious. There was a memorable BBQ steak night, as well as Mexican and Italian nights on board. Fresh fish, grilled meat and curries were available and complemented by a lovely selection of fruit, puddings, and ice cream which could be enjoyed by choosing an excellent wine from their expansive list. Party nights were held in the bar where the disco lights attracted the dolphins and nurse sharks to the boat. On-board everyone relaxed, shared their holiday experiences and talked about their own memories made with Scubaspa of the idyllic ocean paradise in the Maldives.

Suffer from

HEARTBURN or REFLUX?

Helen Harper of Spire Norwich Hospital talks to a Norfolk patient who underwent ‘life changing’ surgery to treat reflux with Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgeon Mr Bhaskar Kumar.

W

e’ve

probably all experienced heartburn at some point in our lives, I know I have, but for me it consisted of a few weeks during the latter stages of pregnancy and another time during an overindulgent Christmas day. Both of my experiences were easily treated with over the counter heartburn remedies to ease the symptoms but it was nothing more than a burning sensation in my chest and a general uncomfortable feeling in my tummy. Reflux can have similar symptoms to heartburn but people also complain about their stomach feeling bloated, feeling sick, as well as an unpleasant taste in their mouth or a burning sensation in their throat. Reflux is caused as a result of the ring of muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus (gullet) becoming weakened which allows acid from the stomach to leak up into the oesophagus. The valve which is meant to prevent this is called a sphincter, but if you have reflux, this doesn’t work as well so cannot prevent this acid rising up out of the stomach. Commonly reflux symptoms worsen at night, however many people manage the symptoms well with over the counter remedies, but for others it can cause severe discomfort which can impact their quality of life. Shauna, 54 from Norwich was one of those people, so I caught up with her about her experience with reflux and the path which has led her to be free of her symptoms. “Shauna, tell me about your symptoms?” “I originally experienced signs of reflux whilst pregnant 25 years ago but it was not as bad then as it is now. I would feel incredible discomfort in my tummy which caused frequent bouts of diarrhoea. I often felt sick, my mouth would fill with liquid which was acidic and burned my throat, it was just awful. The symptoms weren’t always as a direct result of eating either, it could come on at any time. It was particularly bad at night

though, I would feel terribly nauseous and so uncomfortable that it prevented me from sleeping. I was pretty miserable at that time as you can imagine”. “As the symptoms worsened I was prescribed medication by my GP but unfortunately they gave me diarrhoea and sickness, so I had to stop taking them because of the side effects, so I couldn’t win either way!” So you decided to contact Spire Norwich Hospital? “Yes, my GP originally referred me to a Consultant Gastroenterologist who was great, he confirmed that my symptoms were not related to my diet after a series of tests. He also tested me for Coeliac disease (a condition where the intestine (gut) reacts to gluten in the persons diet causing pain and chronic inflammation) and that was all clear. Once we ruled those things out, he suggested an onward referral to Mr Kumar who was a specialist in symptoms of reflux and I used my private medical insurance to see him”. “How was your initial consultation with Mr Kumar?” “My appointment was made very quickly and I remember Mr Kumars helpful and friendly nature so well. We talked through my symptoms in so much detail as he really wanted to get to the heart of how I was feeling and how he could help. I immediately trusted him because of his professionalism and the time he took to discuss everything with me”. “What happened next?” “Mr Kumar explained that he could perform an operation called a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication where he would wrap the top part of my stomach around the lower part of my oesophagus to create a new valve, this would prevent the contents of my stomach coming back up into my oesophagus. He took so much time to explain the operation, he even drew a picture and he was confident

75

this procedure would vastly improve my condition. The benefit of having treatment at Spire Norwich Hospital was I could choose when I wanted my operation and I opted for about 8 weeks later. Mr Kumar recommended that I lost a little weight before the procedure, so this gave me time to do this and to ensure my surgery could fit around other commitments”. “On the day of my surgery I was nervous, but it was lovely to have my own room. One of the best things about Spire is their flexible visiting hours as my husband could be there with me and family could also come and see me with no restrictions too. The operation went as planned, I felt remarkably well after the operation and I stayed in overnight and went home the next day. The staff and Mr Kumar were so attentive, I can’t praise them enough”. “So, how does your life compare now?” “Mr Kumar recommended a restricted diet for the first 6 weeks after surgery so not to irritate my stomach, but after that I could eat as normal and now, I have no reflux symptoms at all. The surgery has been life changing”. “I have met lots of lovely consultants over the years but there’s something very special about Mr Kumar”. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION on Gastrointestinal surgery please contact a member of the private patient team at Spire Norwich Hospital on 01603 255 614 to arrange a private appointment with Mr Bhaskar Kumar Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgeon. It’s good to talk about FAMILY FINANCES Christmas and the New Year is a time when families often get together. Carl Lamb explains why there are good reasons to use that time to talk about your finances. MANY FAMILIES find it difficult to

talk about financial matters and I’m often surprised at the reluctance of some parents to divulge their financial circumstances to their children, however old they are. However, this can cause problems later on if the family has no idea where money is banked, what investments are held and what pensions and policies are in place. There is an old Chinese adage that wealth doesn’t survive more than three generations: the first generation scrimps and saves to build wealth, the second is comfortable but careful because they’ve seen how hard-won wealth can be, but the third has only known financial ease so spends at will and fritters wealth away. Perhaps this cycle can be avoided by families being more open about financial matters and passing on financial know-how from generation to generation. As a first step, I suggest that your New Year’s resolution for 2019 might be to sit down with all those affected by your wealth and talk about what you have and where it is held. You don’t have to give away the exact amounts if you feel uncomfortable doing so, but a simple explanation of the savings and investments you hold and why you selected these routes will be useful both to help build their knowledge and experience and to ensure that if you are suddenly unable to deal with your own finances, they won’t be starting from scratch. Explain about how tax affects the money you earn and how it might affect your estate. Tell them about any liabilities such as mortgages and insurance cover on your life or income too. If you have a financial adviser, do make sure that

your family knows who it is so they can approach him or her if necessary. Of course, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a critical element of your financial planning, whatever your age or health. None of us knows when something may happen that will prevent us dealing with our own finances so having a trusted person in place to take over the reins when needed is truly important. The LPA will only be invoked when the need arises

taught in schools so how will they begin to understand about pensions and investments unless such things are discussed at home? Teaching children the value of money and the principles of earning, paying tax, saving and growing wealth may not have an immediate effect on their pocket-money spending but will, hopefully, stay with them to underpin their relationship with money in later life. When advising clients, we often advise whole families and include family members in financial reviews (with clients’ consent, of course). This helps us ensure that the arrangements we put in place meet the needs and objectives of all generations, avoiding conflicts in clients’ best interests. By talking through strategies with the whole family, we can dispel misconceptions and foster true understanding – something we have found makes for better client outcomes in the long run. _

so you’ve no need to fear that control will be taken away unless it is absolutely necessary. My recommendation to talk about money is not just so your heirs know where your estate is held: it’s good to talk from an educational perspective too. Families who discuss their finances openly in front of younger children can start to instil some understanding of financial matters at a young age. Young people need a source of financial education in their lives: it’s rarely

77

The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. For independent advice, contact Almary Green on 01603 706740 or email enquiries@almarygreen.com. Over&Out values. As a county Norfolk has a strong sense of loyalty to local shops and businesses and we try to do the same as much as possible. How is Cecil Amey contributing to the growth of the region? We are continuing to reinvest in our local high streets. In 2014 we moved our Watton branch into a bigger store; in 2015 we opened a new branch in Wroxham which signaled a new look for Cecil Amey (one which is being rolled out across all 8 sites). In March 2018 we moved our head office team into new offices created at our Attleborough branch as we modernised and developed the practice there. We always look to bring new brands to our stores in an attempt to attract new clients. Consequently, we have had people come from far afield to purchase spectacles and benefit from the services we offer. Tell us something that people don’t know about you I am a very open book therefore it is hard to think of something most people don’t already know...maybe that I am training to run my 6th & last full Marathon in April; however with a broken toe at the moment my training has not gone to plan so far! What is your proudest achievement? Gaining my masters degree as a mature student while running a home and family with three children at school age. It was tough and I would never have completed it without all the support and encouragement I had from my husband and closest friends.

Emma Amey is a director at Cecil

Amey who along with her husband Robert Amey (CEO), Andy Lowen (Operations director) and the whole amazing team (her words) run the largest Independent Optician group in East Anglia. In conjunction with striving to maintain their reputation established over the last 94 years, Emma is looking to help drive the business forward, in an enterprising manner whilst retaining all the ethos and family values the company is already known for. What do you like about living in Norfolk? I love being able to get to the coast. I grew up by the sea and have very happy

82

memories of being at the beach. Norfolk offers such a variety of coast, countryside and great villages and of course the fab city of Norwich! We are spoilt for choice. How does Cecil Amey make a difference to people’s lives? For 94 years various members of the Amey family have strived to offer a fabulous level of customer service in Optical health. Looking to provide visual solutions which in turn, hopefully makes a difference to peoples quality of life in general. What do you most enjoy about working with people and businesses in our region? I really enjoy the opportunity to operate in a modern progressive way but with a positive nod to heritage and traditional

Run us through a typical day for you It often starts with either a run or walk with Alfie, our black labrador. I then catch up on emails from my office at home before heading out to one of the 8 Cecil Amey practices. I am generally found behind the scenes either meeting with other business collaborators or our own senior team looking at future buying and strategic plans. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Reading, watching movies and listening to music and surrounding myself with family and friends as often as possible. A best friend brought me an apron which states ‘Emma’s kitchen was made for dancing’ which sums me up fairly well. Where do you like to eat and drink? We tend to end up at friends houses to eat and drink more often than restaurants but we do consider The Unthank Arms our local and we love going to The Crown at Southwold when we get time. Can you sum up Cecil Amey in five words? Trustworthy; Professional; Independent; Stylish; Caring Can you sum yourself up in five words? Proactive; Busy; Sociable; Sensitive (sometimes too much so) and Happy (mostly)
