TO MAY’S PLACES&FACES AS WE HEAD into May we are starting to appreciate the warmer weather, and after enjoying a late Easter this year it is a nice feeling to have so many Bank Holidays so close together. With this in mind the Places&Faces team have been busy filling this month’s magazine with lots of great things for you to do and see. Out About NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS Sunday Sessions Norwich is ready to make Bank Holiday go with a bang, with this festival in a day that has Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds headlining, as well as performances from Razorlight and The Coral. The family-friendly event starts at noon and there is plenty to keep the kids entertained, including circus workshops, face

painting, crafts, entertainers and a fun fair. But all eyes will be on the former Oasis legend and his assembled band of accomplished musicians that include former Oasis session pianist Mike Rowe, Oasis drummer Chris Sharrock, Zutons bassist Russell Pritchard and Oasis guitarist Gem Archer.

The band has enjoyed much success since forming in 2010, with all three studio albums topping the UK charts. With a strong line-up and varied entertainment, plus the option of festival upgrades like the obligatory ‘posh loos’, this is a cracking way to enjoy the long weekend.

Tracey Thorn SINGER SONGWRITER Tracey Thorn spent 17 years fronting Everything But The Girl, producing a clutch of hauntingly beautiful hit singles as part of the enigmatic duo. She appears here in a rescheduled event (originally 13 February) that forms part of UEA Spring Literacy Festival. Literacy? Well, Thorn has written two books, including the Sunday Times bestselling memoir Bedsit Disco Queen. Now, she has just released her third tome, and another memoir, titled Another planet: A Teenager in Suburbia. Harleston & Waveney Art Trail FEATURING 29 STUDIOS, including four new artists from the group’s inaugural emerging artists scheme, the trail takes in the studios of 33 professional artists and craftspeople. FANS OF Wet Wet Wet, one of the most successful British pop groups, will be delighted to see the band back on the road – albeit with a line-up that does not include iconic frontman Marti Pellow. The band split in 1997 but then reformed in 2004, only to split again in 2017. But now the Wets are back, with a new lead singer in the shape of X Factor winner Kevin Simm. Expect fabulous renditions of thei r greatest hits (including Love Is All Around, Sweet Little Mystery, Goodnight Girl) as Simm and founder band members take you on a nostalgic journey thro ugh their extensive back catalogue. Serious fans can also join the Sou nd Check Experience, which include s exclusive access to the sound chec k, photo opportunity with the band, VIP laminated pass and lanyard, exclusive tote bag and a tour programme signed by the band members.

An Evening With Alan McGee IT SEEMS HARD to escape music nostalgia at the moment, with reformed bands, bands playing album tours of hits from 30 years ago (The Wedding Present, for example), and musos popping up just about everywhere. It’s refreshing, then, to see music industry executive Alan McGee taking centre stage. Yes, he was the man who signed Oasis and made them a phenomena, but in co-founding and running Creation Records, McGee was also instrumental in shaping bands including Primal Scream who went on to change the face and direction of British music. Few people are as well placed to discuss the music industry than McGee, and we wonder what he makes of Irvine Welsh and Danny Boyle reuniting to make a biopic of his life. This evening will be hosted by author and broadcaster Rob Fiddaman, and should be a fascinating look backstage at a cultural influencer and his many well-known associates. 30 May, Norwich Arts Centre, £19, 8pm. Norfolk & Norwich Festival THIS VARIED festival takes places across a multitude of venues over 17 days, providing a cunning mix of live music of all genres, art, dance, theatre and more. The festival’s aim is to use the power of arts to make Norfolk and Norwich a great place to live, work, learn and play, by working with artists from around the world to create unforgettable experiences.

There are many highs throughout the programme, which is why the opening performance seems so apt. Visit Norwich city centre and look upwards to see daredevil Chris Bullzini perform an ambitious highwire walk above the city’s streets. The ‘walk’ will be accompanied by a live soundscape and should be quite a spectacle. Literature lovers will head to hear writer Ali Smith (21 May, Norwich Playhouse) discussing Spring – part of the Seasonal Quartet. Smith has won numerous awards, and been shortlisted for just about every gong going, and has been described as one of our generation’s warmest, wittiest and finest writers. Other highlights include folk legends Eliza and Martin Carthy performing an ambitious new project at Norwich Cathedral (11 May). Commissioned by the festival, Celebration sees Martin and Eliza working with Duotone and Sheema Mukherjee, plus acclaimed dancer and choreographer Ewan Wardop. The Carthys spent the last few months collecting and curating music and poetry from the East of England, so this will be a unique and unforgettable collection of myths, legends and ballads – not to be missed. Singer Beverley Knight (left) at Norwich Theatre Royal (18 May), a screening of the film Salome with a live score at Norwich Playhouse (24 May), and the City Of Literature Weekend in Norwich (24-26 May) are other events that caught our eye. Jimmy Carr AH, JIMMY CARR. A comedian so impeccably turned out he almost looks like a hologram. But don’t be fooled by this double-header of back to back gigs on the same evening in Felixstowe – this is the man in the toothy flesh. The brash comic who never steers clear of a controversial quip has made a name for himself hosting game shows like 8 Out Of 10 Cats, but it’s on stage where he truly shines, unburdened by the shackles of TV watchdogs. It’s fair to say he will be shocking, but not in a poor way. This new show contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things, so the publicity says, terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes. Don’t shoot the messenger… Carr is hard not to admire, and Suffolk audiences get twice the chance to be shocked and awed in this rare foray away from mega venues. 24 May, Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe, £33.50, 7pm and 10pm. Viking: Rediscover the Legend THIS NEW EXHIBITION, in partnership with the British Museum and York Museums Trust, explores how Viking culture transformed Britain, and the particular impact it had on our region. By using new research and discoveries, the exhibition charts the 200-year presence of the Vikings, and how they shaped our land in more ways than you can imagine – from politics to art. As well as themed sections highlighting different aspects of Viking life, there are 50 objects from East Anglia – many on display for the first time. Wax is ably assisted here by the above mentioned experts Gelong Thubten and Ash Ranpura, as they explore what makes us ‘us’ and the Holy Grail that is the pursuit of happiness in an increasingly inhuman, automated, tech-slaved world. Horrible Histories THE BEST-SELLING children’s books are brought to gruesome life on stage as the audience gets the chance to meet some of the past’s more colourful characters. These shows use actors and innovative 3D effects to create a stunning show that kids will love. Terrible Tudors covers the horrible Henrys, the end of evil Elizabeth, headless wives and the Spanish Armada. Awful Egyptians will leave kids shouting for their mummies as it explores the ancient pyramids, Ramesses the Great and lots of fearsome facts about the afterlife. An Audience With Liverpool Legends

THE TIMING of this event is interesting as there is a distinct possibility that there may well be another 11 Liverpool legends to add to the list, if the current team go on to lift the club’s first Premier League title. Regardless of that, there is no taking anything away from the three former footballers appearing here, in an evening full of entertainment and banter. Hear Steve McMahon, John Aldridge and Ronnie Whelan discussing their careers, representing Liverpool, and their respective countries. Fiddler ON THE

Our resident West End theatre critic Benet Catty went to see Fiddler on the Roof

In the late stages of writing what would soon be their career-defining musical director/choreographer Jerome Robbins’ kept badgering the authors Bock and Harnick: “What is this show about?” Finally they answered him. “It’s about tradition” they said. “Write that” Robbins replied. They did. “Tradition” became the defining number in their ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and perhaps the greatest opening number ever written for any show, matched only by ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Hamilton’ decades later. Twelve years since its last London outing, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ is back – in a scaled down production by Trevor Nunn, staged before Christmas at the Menier Chocolate Factory (where I saw it at the end of its run) and now moved to a reconfigured Playhouse Theatre. As a show that has traditionally played in big proscenium houses, ‘Fiddler’ is actually a small story with a big reach, and benefits being told in a more intimate way. As will be known to all those who have seen the film or played in amateur productions over the last six decades, ‘Fiddler’ takes place in Tsarist Russia in 1905. Lovable patriarch Tevye holds traditions close, but as his three daughters grow up and start following their hearts rather than his demands, he has to learn to embrace change and the unknown. This 14

uprooting of tradition is also happening in a larger context, as the tiny Jewish community in which they all live prepares to be uprooted. The show’s mix of comfortable tradition and risky change is the essential drama of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Jerome Robbins’ original choreography continues to have a prominent place, as it has done for 55 years, and its highlight – To Life – remains the wow it always was, the more so for being restaged for an audience on three sides. The problem that is uncovered by this production is how much it needs a star turn in the leading role. While some shows of that era stand or fall on the story (‘Cabaret’) or comedy (‘How to Succeed’) ‘Fiddler’ has the most in common with the show that won the Tony Award the year before its own, ‘Hello Dolly’. Without a dazzling Dolly, Hello Dolly is a pretty silly evening. Without a triumphant Tevye ‘Fiddler’ sinks beneath the weight of its portent and the dustiness of its comedy. Andy Nyman is sadly not that Tevye. Surprising, he finds much less humour in the role than did Henry Goodman (who played the role in the 2007 revival). Nyman also can’t quite sing it: on the night I saw it he was often flat. Topol he ain’t. There’s more to enjoy elsewhere in the cast, with Broadway star Judy Kuhn touching as Tevye’s (underwritten) wife

Golde, and Stewart Clarke and Harriet Bunton are touching as one of the hopeful couples. The show is strongest in the big ensemble numbers. “Sunrise, Sunset” remains the emotional highlight of the classic score, beautifully orchestrated by Jason Carr. Fans of nostalgia who want to spend three hours in the presence of a muchloved show could do worse than ‘Fiddler’. It is not a match for Nunn’s revivals of ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Anything Goes’, to name just three. To reach those heights it would need a more persuasive star turn. ‘Fiddler’ also represents an historic moment for the London theatre scene, so far un-noted by the press. It is planned to run beyond July 13th, when Trevor Nunn’s production of ‘Les Miserables’ is retired after 33 years to be replaced by a newer staging directed by someone else. Since ‘Cats’ opened in May 1981, the West End has had a Nunn-directed musical running every single night for the 38 years since. When ‘Fiddler’ closes, this unparalleled run of success will come to an end. And that tradition is a great loss. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is currently showing at the Playhouse Theatre Northumberland Avenue in London’s West End.

Over the years I’ve had some incredible experiences at the Festival: a disco with eight strangers in a room the size of an airing cupboard - on stilts (‘Air Hotel’); an opera singer at my house with an audience of one – me; an outdoor Victorian banquet at a Tudor mansion with over 100 guests (‘Dining With Alice’), and more nudity and cheeky moments at the Spiegeltent than I dare to remember – always huge fun! One thing is for sure: the Festival is an opportunity to try something different, and it’s on our doorstep – aren’t we the lucky ones? Here is my guide to the Festival, though to be honest it’s pretty much impossible to turn the entire programme into a top list so here are the ones that have particularly caught my attention. I urge you to read the brochure inside out to not miss anything! If you were in Norwich at the launch of last year’s Festival, you would have witnessed something spectacular and original - and free. Huge crowds in Gentleman’s Walk and outside The Forum witnessed oversized, costumed opera singing living dolls gliding through the streets. And as if that wasn’t enough, the finale of the performance was drumbeating musicians suspended from a crane over St Peter Mancroft. The weather was warm and the atmosphere electric; there must have been at least 15,000 people watching this completely magical spectacle. This year will be equally dramatic yet very different. Join us for The Journey on 10 May at 9pm. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will see Chris Bullzini high-wire walk across Norwich Market without a safety harness. This spectacular performance will be accompanied by a remarkable live soundscape. Once again, expect something incredibly special. Beyond the launch event, Reverse (£5) takes place 16-18 May; experience reality in reverse by looking straight ahead but walking backwards. This very unique tour of Norwich will include a soundtrack and fusion of fiction. I’ve taken many tours of Norwich and I cannot imagine how this will work, but there’s only one way to find out and I’m eager to try it. Eight years ago, I heard some of the

best jazz ever when Kyle Eastwood and his band performed at Norwich Playhouse - the most exquisite, intimate venue for such a show. Kyle is the oldest son of Clint Eastwood, and the most incredible musician. I bought tickets because this was happening in Norwich; if it had been anywhere else I wouldn’t have bothered. I took a gamble and it totally paid off. This year at Norwich Playhouse see Judi Jackson (23 May, £16) for one night only. Ms Jackson is quickly making her

If you go to the Festival website you can see a clip of her performance - she’s mesmerising. Slap bang in the middle of the Festival (1819 May) is The Garden Party at Chapelfield Gardens and outside at The Forum. The weekend is a delightful and wacky smorgasbord of free outdoor events, such as dance, acrobatics and music, including six world premières for all ages. Smashed is for anyone eight years or over (16 May, Norwich Playhouse, 7.30pm, £14). Having performed in over 50 countries, Gandini Juggling has been at the forefront of contemporary circus for over 25 years. It’s going to be a tea party never to forget involving 80 apples, nine performers and four crockery sets. If you love your music hot, soulful and fast then don’t miss Las Maravillas De Mali Ft. Mory Kante, a legendary Malian/ Cuban band formed in the 60’s (Norwich

Theatre Royal, 12 May, £10 - £36). Then after watching it, do it - at Cuba Libre! in the Spiegeltent, 19 May (£12). Spend the afternoon in sensual dance, Cuban rhythms and good times! Wild Longings is a sensuous horticultural journey by Curious at Plantation Garden (11-13 May, £14). Including conservation tips, stories and songs, this is a Festival cocommission and a way to enjoy the garden from a different perspective. News News News sounds like loads of fun. Taking place at Norwich Playhouse, this world première is a television news show made by children for adults, recorded in front of an audience and broadcast live on the internet. Suitable for ages 10+, tickets £14. A raucous night at the Spiegeltent is worth a year’s wait. On 22 and 23 May at 10pm, see a cabaret about gin - Mother’s Ruin. It’s darkly comic and described as historical and hysterical in equal parts, tickets £15. Finally, something completely different - James Turrell Skyspace Evenings at Houghton Hall. If you have yet to visit the magnificent Houghton then this would make a first time visit particularly memorable. Skyspace is an installation in the grounds of the Hall, by celebrated Californian artist James Turrell, and is a permanent fixture. The difference on this occasion is that you view Skyspace at dusk, followed by a three course dinner in the Hall’s Old Kitchen. There are only four Skyspaces in the UK and Houghton’s is pretty magical. Tickets £75, 20-25 May. This is just a snapshot of the programme; the Festival runs between 10 May-26 May and includes unique theatre and dance, international circus, world-class orchestral music, contemporary music, outdoor art, a City of Literature Weekend (24-26 May) and visual arts. Venues run across the city and county and include: Blickling Estate, Houghton Hall, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth, Norwich Castle, National Centre for Writing, Oxfam on Magdalen Street Norwich, The Norwich Puppet Theatre and more. For those who love getting close to

nature, the brand new Pensthorpe Bird and Wildlife Fair is taking place at Pensthorpe Natural Park on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May. A team of local nature and conservation experts will be coming together to host the fair showcasing why Norfolk is renowned as ‘the birdwatching capital of Britain’. Celebrating naturespotting in Norfolk, visitors will have the opportunity to hear from experts in the fields of optic equipment, wildlife-inspired art and crafts, books and nature holidays. Nature and wildlife expert Simon King OBE will be making a guest appearance at the fair and will give insightful talks and guided walks. Renowned for his presenting work on popular series such as Big Cat Diary, Springwatch and Autumnwatch, Simon is a passionate conservationist and has been creating natural history films for more than 30 years, including as cameraman on The Blue Planet and Planet Earth. In 2015 he launched the Simon King Wildlife Project, which is a registered charity dedicated to land restoration, education and engagement in the natural world. Also making a guest appearance is The One Show wildlife reporter Mike Dilger, who first became a household name on Britain’s Wild Invaders in 2000, is an ecologist, natural history presenter and writer. TV work has included Nature’s Top 40, Wild Gardens, The Nature of Britain and Nature’s Calendar. The fair will highlight the county’s credentials as a birding and wildlife hotspot and shine a light on the myriad of

extraordinary species attracted to the area. April and May are the peak times for spring bird migration, so the event provides a weekend for birders to visit Pensthorpe, renowned for its wildlife and birding credentials, and stay in the county right in the middle of the busy migratory period. Tickets £8 per person. Under 3s and Pensthorpe Annual Members are free. Moving from the land and air to the sea, the annual Crab & Lobster Festival is also taking place on 18th and 19th of May 2019, at Evington Gardens, Runton Road, Cromer. The event is all about celebrating the sea-faring heritage of Cromer and Sheringham and visitors will be able to enjoy a weekend of food, fun, art, music and heritage. The opening concert, at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre, hosted by Olly Day, kicks off the weekend’s events on

17 May. There will be appearances by Nigel Boy Syer, Sheringham Shantymen, The Old Wild Rovers and Marlene’s Dancers. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are available directly from the Pavilion box office or via the festival website. On festival day, the doors open at 10am on 18th May, with over 50 local craft, food and drink stalls and plenty of entertainment for children. This year’s cookery demonstrations start at 11.00am with crab dressing tips. During the evening, you can enjoy a BBQ while listening to local band Tom, Dick and Harry, who will be performing in the main marquee from 6.30pm. Finally, on Sunday 19 May, you can visit any of the stalls you may have missed from the day before, and at 2pm the 3rd Annual Cromer Crab Sandwich Competition will be judged. For music lovers, not to be missed is the Folk on the Pier event, now in its 21st year, taking place 10th to 12th May 2019 at the Cromer Pier Pavillion Theatre. There will be six concerts over the three days each with a top name headliner. Performances include John Tams and Barry Coope, Ashley Hutchings, Merry Hell and Oysterband who recently celebrated forty years of touring. The much-loved seaside town with its stunning pier and unspoilt beaches is also home to the crab which takes its name. Visit Cromer this month to catch the annual crab festival, or any time of the year for its many varied attractions.

ack in 1993, writing a series of articles in The Independent on Britain’s finest piers, Martin Wroe said that “Cromer is not on the way to anywhere, except perhaps the past”. Fast forward 25+ years into the future, and the public’s passion for nostalgia and less complicated times remains. As does Cromer Pier. In fact, both the town and its famous landmark are in fine fettle, thank you very much, and showing little signs of age. Yes, they may have the odd facelift, but this is still unmistakably Cromer – a great British seaside town in North Norfolk. The Cromer Pier Show is now in its 41st year, while the Victorian pier itself is one of only five in the UK that still has a working theatre, providing a family-friendly programme of quality seaside entertainment. The 500-seat theatre is a 151-metre stroll along the pier, and has proved the ‘training ground’ for some of the UK’s best-loved entertainers. It is also the only full-season end of the pier show in the world – combining comedy with great singers, mesmerising magicians and dazzling dance performances. This summer, the pier will be hosting a brand new exclusive preview week of shows from 22 June, with an opening gala performance on 29 June (complete with black tie dress code and red

carpet reception). The Oscars have nothing on the Cromer Pier Show! The season features the cheeky comedy of Paul Eastwood, the return of “A man called G”, and the debut of master showman, mind reader and conjurer Matthew Pomeroy. Vocalists Emily Yarrow and Harvey James also return, while the Cromer Pier Show dancers add a touch of Strictly glitz to proceedings. Quite simply, it’s a must-visit. As well as the pier, Cromer is famous for its crabs, and this month is the best time to catch the crab and lobster festival. Held on the weekend of 17 to 19 May 2019, the event is a lively weekend of fun celebrations held in both Cromer and neighbouring Sheringham. The festival is dedicated to promoting seafaring heritage and the local fishing community, and features a variety concert at Cromer’s pier theatre with the show continuing over the weekend on the town’s Evington Lawns. Of course, crab is the real star of the show, and food of all varieties (not just our celebrated crustaceans) plays a large

More than 50 local craft, food and drink stalls will be available, as well as crab pot making, and on Sunday afternoon the hotly contested annual Cromer Crab Sandwich Competition. Later in the year, on 25 August, there is the annual World Crabbing Competition where you can compete with your line and secret bait to be crowned champion crabber 2019. The rest of the year, it’s up to family and friends to compete for their own version of King Cromer Crabber, and it’s an activity that is best enjoyed dangling a line off the pier. It’s free to crab fish off the pier, and crabbing kits can be bought for under £10 from the gift shop at the pier entrance. Make sure you don’t snare Claude the Crab, the pier’s own crabbing mascot – he could be a tough one to reel in. Also, a top tip for would-be crabbers is to try using mackerel or squid instead of bacon. Happy crabbing! One final shout out to the pier, before we move on to Cromer’s many other delights, is the award-winning Tides Restaurant. You can dine here inside or out and the fabulous views and attractive setting make it great for both a lunch date for families or for a romantic evening dinner. The Mediterranean-inspired menu is served daily. As promised, now we venture back onto terra firma, and first stop is the beach – a welcoming wide expanse of sand and shingle, flanked by steep, chalk cliffs. Jane Austen herself, in the novel Emma, wrote: “You should have gone to Cromer, my dear, if you went

anywhere. Perry was a week at Cromer once, and he holds it to be the best of all the seabathing places. A fine open sea, he says, and very pure air”. We’re not going to argue with Jane! For places to eat, we recommend the Crab Pot Café – great for a full English, tea and cake or one of their daily specials. For sea views with your salt and pepper, Rocket House Café is hard to beat, and has an outdoor terrace too. This is a great place to try some famous Cromer crab or even local lobster. No1 Cromer is a traditional fish and chip restaurant over two storeys, with great views from the cliffs, and they also do international dishes ( just in case for some reason you don’t like cod and mushy peas). Of course, fish and chips is no longer the nation’s favourite dish, so if you fancy a spicy curry, you do

Out&About have options in Cromer. There’s delicious Punjabi cuisine at Indian On The Cliff, or try Cromer Tandoori Restaurant. Also recommended, heading further east in terms of flavours, in the Bann Thai – don’t miss the fiery Tom Yum Goong soup, or their extensive vegetarian options. Fancy something a little special? The Red Lion may sound like a traditional pub but this smart restaurant with rooms overlooking the sea has revamped its menus to now provide AA Gold Star dining with an emphasis on Norfolk produce. You’ll probably be looking for a cooling, refreshing drink during your stay (either as a quencher from a day in the sun or evening in the curry house), and Cromer is blessed with some cracking boozers (our words, not those of Jane Austen). The Wellington (or Welly to the locals) is a dog-friendly drinkerie with a range of local lagers and ales. There is also live entertainment on a Saturday night and

a pool table, plus live sports on the big screen. Peckish or fancy a tasty of the Deep South (Louisiana, not London)? Try their Smokehouse Restaurant with locally sourced food and onsite smoker, delivering delicious pulled pork and slow cooked beef brisket, or juicy steaks and burgers. With so much emphasis on life at sea here in Cromer, it’s no surprise to learn that one of the greatest lifeboatmen of them all served for 53 years in Cromer. Henry Blogg and his crews saved 873 lives from the North Sea, serving as coxswain until the age of 74, and he is immortalised in a fascination museum in the town. The Henry Blogg Museum tells you all about the man’s daring rescues and incredible bravery, features models of the various boats he would have used, and gives visitors the chance to dress up like Blogg, learn Morse code, and hear stories from the time. A trip to this hands-on, interactive museum is essential to understand the

incredibly important role the RNLI plays, and the bravery of the volunteers that risk their lives to save others at sea. Visitors are also welcome to see the working Lifeboat Station in action at Cromer Pier. Back on the beach, fishing is a popular pastime and you can even catch cod from here, while anglers on the pier are also looking to bag themselves a bass. Surfing lessons are also run on the beach near the pier, giving anyone the chance to feel the thrill of riding the gentle waves. Cromer is perhaps the last place you would expect to find an animal park dedicated to beasts and birds from South America, but the Amazona Zoo is just that – home to more tha 200 tropical animals, including jaguars, monkeys, pumas, flamingos, spiders and snakes. You can adopt one of their animals for just £25. There are also outdoor and indoor play areas, and this place offers a unique slice of exotic Amazon life in this quiet corner of Norfolk.

Beccles Food & Drink Festival Celebrating it’s 5th year, the popular Beccles Food and Drink Festival is returning in 2019 to tantalise the taste buds. The free event, set for Saturday 25 May, will showcase over 70 food and drink stalls, many of them local artisan producers, as well as those from further afield in East Anglia. Based in the centre of the vibrant market town around New Market, Sheepgate, in St Michael’s Church and the Public Hall, the Festival runs from 10 am till 4 pm and will include cookery demonstrations and talks, street food, music and children’s entertainment. A free Park & Ride shuttle service will run throughout the event from Beccles Quay, where additional parking will be available. A new feature for 2019 is a series of Fringe events held at venues in the town and within a 15 mile radius. Running from 18 May till 2 June, invited food and drink establishments in the local area will be running a variety of events, from Thai, Vegan, Japanese and Sushi nights to Suffolk and cheese themed menus, a chocolate experience, fizzy wine and canapes, a lamb themed Farmers Market, sausage making workshop and a farm tour. • 1 Cromer Crab • 2 lemons • 1 orange • fresh parsley • salt and pepper • 2 spears of asparagus • 1 avocado • 1 fennel • 1 cucumber • 50ml of vinegar

Method

To make the Crab bon bons remove Crab meat from the shell. Mix into a bowl with zest and juice from 1 lemon add chopped parsley then add salt and pepper roll mixture into 3 balls. Then roll in flour coating all over then into an egg and milk mixture coating all over again then into breadcrumbs. Cook the asparagus in boiling water for 2-3

minutes then place in cold water straight away to stop the cooking process and keep the lovely green colour. Peel the avocado and add the juice of the other lemon and blitz until smooth. Slice the cucumber in half long ways taking the seeds out with a spoon slicing the cucumber at an angle. Then cut the fennel

in half slicing it through a mandoline. Place both cucumber and fennel into a bowl with vinegar and sugar along with zest and juice from the orange.

when you mix a fastbowling forager with a two Rosette restaurant…? Well, if you are in Cromer this summer you could end up with a delicious ginger, coriander and chilli crab dish, courtesy of an old friendship and the local cricket club… One of the most wonderful aspects of the Grove in Cromer is the magical relationship between the establishment and the customers who have flooded through the doors from the day they opened over seven years ago (an addition to the hotel which has been run by the same family since 1936). Some of these patrons become friends as well as welcomed clients, and in many cases are a huge driving force behind the success of what has become one of North Norfolk’s finest eateries. As a fearsome paceman for Cromer and Norfolk cricket clubs, creating havoc amongst batsmen every summer, Evan Tuck was already a good friend of the Graveling family (who have a history with the club stretching over four generations), and when the Grove opened its dining room doors to the public in 2012 Evan and his wife Kerrie were one of the first couples to visit. “Those first couple of years with a new restaurant were quite an experience,” remembers Richard Graveling “so it was always very reassuring to see a friendly face whenever ET and Kerrie came in for dinner. If I’m honest we were making things up as we went along a bit at the time, and we were very grateful to our regulars who supported us incredibly kindly in the early period as we found our feet and started to establish the restaurant. Evan and Kerrie are among many locals who still come in and see us and it’s great to be able to get their feedback, even now, as we look to continue to improve. ET is an excellent chef in his own right and, after a recent round at Sheringham GC, he cooked us this amazing crab dish. Of course being in Cromer we always have to have fresh

SERVES ONE • One dressed Cromer crab

• One teaspoon �inely chopped ginger • One teaspoon olive oil • One teaspoon �inely chopped coriander • Dash of salt and pepper • One tablespoon single cream • Half a mild chilli, chopped • 500g Norfolk Mardler cheese

Method

Remove the crab meat from the shell and place in a bowl. Add in the ginger, olive oil, coriander, single cream, chilli and salt and pepper to taste. Mix all of the ingredients loosely with a fork. Return the mixture to a cleaned shell and smooth into space. Grate Norfolk Mardler cheese (from Fieldings Cottage); enough to cover the crab. Bake on 180oc for 10 mins, checking cheese has melted.

PANANG King Prawn Method Firstly, cook the rice. Place the rice in a saucepan and add cold water until 1cm above the rice. Place on the stove and cook until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through. Remove from the heat and drain off any excess water. While the rice is cooking, prepare the curry. Peel the carrots, and dice them into small cubes. Trim the green beans, and then cut in half. Peel the tails of the tiger prawns, leaving the head attached. Heat two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a frying pan, and add the curry paste. Cook for about one minute whilst stirring, until the aromas of the paste start to come out. Add the coconut milk and bring to the boil. Once boiling, add the vegetables, the fish sauce, and the palm sugar. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the prawns and vegetables are cooked through. Roughly chop the coriander and stir through at the last second. To Serve, portion the rice into a ramekin, and turn upside down into a bowl to create a dome shape. Spoon the curry into the bowl, and arrange the prawns on top. Finely slice the lime leaves and chilli, and place on top of the rice. Finally finish with a lime wedge.

Mark Nicholls heads to the setting of an historic Norfolk inn for some fabulous Thai cuisine

S

turdy and solid, standing

sentinel by the side of the Fakenham to Holt Road, The Crawfish Inn exudes the image of Victorian hostelry. Red bricked, it has a history: dating from 1830s, the building on the A148 in Thursford was once a rallying point for passengers heading for trains to London or into the Midlands from the busy rail interchange at nearby Melton Constable, a thriving station until the 1950s but now all but disappeared from the map. Today, the building is still very much an inn, but step through the door and you enter a tantalising world of oriental cuisine. There is still a bar, where diners can enjoy a selection of beers and local cask ales, wines, spirits and soft drinks as they peruse a tempting menu of Thai cuisine, or relax with a glass after they have eaten. But the real attraction is the food from this long-established Thai restaurant. It has been run by Siropas Rangphet – known as OB - for the last 14 years and as I sit with my wife Sharon in the bar with a glass of Thai Singha beer, I ask him what sets the Crawfish apart from some of the other Thai restaurants to be found in Norfolk. “The food always comes first,” explains OB, “but we have a great atmosphere too and I have to say, I think that is created by our customers. “As for the food, it is Thai but I would say with a ‘Bangkok’ flavour. Many of the Thai restaurants in this country are influenced by the food from the eastern part of Thailand. My food is from Bangkok where my aunt had a restaurant, and when I was growing

up I used to visit it every week. So, I would say that at the Crawfish, we are more influenced by that. “The Bangkok ‘city’ food has a ‘smoother’ taste than ‘countryside’ food, which can be quite sharp. But it does still have the spices and a bit of punch too, and I think people find it easier to eat.” We had dropped by on a Friday night to find the Crawfish Inn already bustling with diners and a vibrant atmosphere. As we finalised our choices we pondered over the popular Thai Red or Green curries which are a traditional choice for many diners and the array of starters, eventually opting for chicken satay with a rich, crunchy peanut sauce and cucumber salad, and prawns in blankets (king prawns stuffed with pork and wrapped in rice pancakes). They were delicious, and I did note there were some excellent set meal choices – which included a starter platter – as well as some great main courses, for those who prefer to have a little help with their selection. Our main course choice was a little less mainstream: I had the mixed seafood Pad Prik Pow (£13.95) with king prawns, mussels, squid and cod stir-fried with vegetables and spicy Thai Chilli paste, while Sharon chose the sizzling beef (£9.95). To go with this, we had sweet and sour vegetables (£6.95), jasmine rice (£2.95) and Pad Mee pe-sed – egg noodles stir-fried with chicken, roast duck and prawns (£8.50). The menu is wide ranging and contains lots of popular choices such as Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup, Thai curries and the ever-

popular Panang Chicken, with its rich sweet and creamy texture. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes on the menu too. We, however, were more than pleased with our choice. My seafood dish was packed with squid, mussels and king prawns, yet also had a warm Thai kick with the chilli paste while retaining immense flavour and body. The beef sizzled and the noodles and sweet and sour offered a distinctive tang to our food. The meal was not only tasty and with healthy portions, but great value too and accompanied by a sweet, fruit Alsace wine which OB had recommended. The aim at the Crawfish Inn is to create authentic Thai cuisine by using the finest ingredients from Thailand – expect to see dishes seasoned with kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, Pandun leaf and other Asian ingredients. OB said: “The combination of classical Thai authentic seasoning with fresh local produce gives us great freedom to create an extraordinary array of distinctive dishes, from the pleasantly mild to the intensely spicy.” THE CRAWFISH INN Holt Road, Thursford, is open for dinner from 6pm-10pm but closed Mondays, except on Bank Holidays. Sorry I just had to get that out of my system. Undeniably Low Farm Eggs are producing some of Suffolk finest produce. A family business based in Huntingfield, Suffolk, has come from humble beginnings supplying a local village store in the 1980s, their eggs can now be found in kitchens and on shop shelves throughout the region. The family farm is now run by Jeremy Blackmore and his wife Kathy, ably helped by daughter Rosie. Originally used to breed pigs and supply turkeys at Christmas, as well as keep chickens, the farm is now mainly devoted to free range eggs. I am currently using the cotswold blues on my al a carte menu, as well as a weekly case used for making everything from pasta to pancakes. They even sell quail and duck eggs. You can really taste the quality and freshness of these eggs and 44

METHOD it is very important to use such fantastic ingredients. Dave from the farm has been delivering to me, in the famous ‘blue van’, for as long as I’ve been cooking here in Suffolk. Quintessentially British in every way, Dave brings to my door step something most just take for granted; the humble egg. Now this made me chuckle; apparently alpacas are a great deterrent for foxes, so these lovely little hens have rather unique room mates. Any good butcher will be more than happy to help with the dicing and mincing which will help to expedite a daunting list of ingredients, but after that is done, simply mix all the ingredients together and season well. I wrap this terrine in parma ham and then roll balantine style in plastic wrap. Cook in a bain marie at 65oc for 1.5 hours. Look for a core temperature of 65oc then cool and reserve.

METHOD Simply blanche in boiling water and then rapidly cool the asparagus in some ice water to stop the cooking. Dress with the salt and olive oil when ready to serve.

TO SERVE On a white starter plate, place a portion of your asparagus place a slice of terrine on top then the crisp Cotswold egg. Garnish with shoots and crushed pistachios. This dish is one of our signatures here at the Boarding House and I hope it will be one of you favourites too.

PREPARATION

into spring there are certain flavours that we chefs love and adore. From wild garlic, to early asparagus and in full summer Norfolk’s wild samphire. Memories of PYO farms and roadside strawberry stalls. And when it comes to vegetables Jersey Royals are these sweet beautiful potatoes that I genuinely look forward to all year round. For me the best way of cooking them is simply boiling them skin on in salted water and finish them with some salted butter, freshly chopped chives and adding some peppery Watercress. This is a real start of the summer dish for me.

• 1 Kilo Jersey Royal Potatoes (washed, skin left on)

• 1 Bunch Watercress

• North Sea Water or Water with 100g of dried Kelp and a tablespoon of Sea Salt

Method

Cover your potatoes with the cold water and seaweed, bring up to the boil and cook for approximately 20 minutes or until the potatoes are just cooked. Strain the potatoes, season with salted butter, salt and white pepper and leave to one side to rest. Whilst the potatoes are resting make the watercress and chervil velouté.

• 2 Large tbsp Salted Butter • 1 Large, Peeled Red Potato (Thinly Sliced) • Pork Fat (Order from your local butcher, Lardo or Italian Pork Fat and have them thinly slice it)

Method

Place the water and potato with a pinch of sea salt into a pot. Bring up to the boil and cook the potato until it is just cooked. Add the watercress and chervil to the potato pot and wilt for 2 minutes, remove from the heat and blend all together using a blender on full speed until smooth. Pass through a fine sieve into a bowl which is sitting on cold water or ice. Place your just warm potatoes into a bowl, lay the cured pork fat over the top and pour the just warmed watercress and chervil velouté over the top. This makes for a great seasonal soup.

has produced a wide and popular market in the car industry, and Ford added to it this year with the introduction of the Focus Active five-door and estate models. Customers in this sector are looking for enhanced versatility and rugged styling – and the Active delivers! The Active, also available in Active X trim, is priced from £21,900. It joins Fiesta Active and KA+ Active with raised ride-height, bold SUVinspired styling, and chassis and rough-road capability enhanced with new Slippery and Trail Selectable Drive Modes. Sophisticated engine options include Ford’s powerful and fuel efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost and 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engines delivering up to 182PS; and the 1.5-litre EcoBlue and 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engines delivering up to 150PS – combined with six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions. my goal is to make interior spaces functional, safe and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting decorative items such as colours, lighting and materials. There are a number of simple design tips you can consider to transform your home like painting smaller rooms in softer, lighter colours to help make the room feel larger. You can use decorative mirrors to add instant light to your living space. Mirrors can also be used to make a small space feel larger. For larger rooms, or any room with a more limited amount of natural light, mirrors placed directly across from the windows, will add instant light Try mixing things up a little, mix up patterns and textures and mix up old and new, expensive and inexpensive. As Interior designers we are briefed by our clients what they want to achieve and in the main our customers do know what they want to achieve with a little tweaking from ourselves, but the most important thing is that we listen and are no way head strong to undermine what our clients may have been planning for some time. Regardless of the type of space you’re decorating, there’s nothing more important than paying attention to detail. I draw a great deal from my research over the years in particularly when it comes to trends. I believe that an important part of the design is being hands on with the manufacturing skills and even to date you will find me working along with my team of drapery technicians and upholsterers

honing and utilising my sewing skills. JHD Interiors started with myself conducting all of the drapery and upholstery work. Today we employ a team of seven skilled workers all which have achieved degrees from universities around

ynonymous with numerous

pendulous clusters of scented purple to blue, pink or white flowers in spring and summer, these delightful climbers can put on a jaw dropping show in any garden, large or small. All you need is a little bit of gardening know-how. Slow and sedate in establishing themselves, you can probably assume it will take at least from 3-5 years from planting to the development of significant flowering stems even with the grafted varieties. They can also be grown from seed, but this will delay the flowering by quite a few years! Originating from North America, with less showy flower bundles to the larger bunches of flowers seen on the more popular Chinese and Japanese varieties, these twining climbers have continued to increase in popularity, probably in part due to some sizable specimens on show in the manicured gardens of various stately homes and castles. Don’t be daunted by not having a suitable wall to grow them against. Use a large thick fence type wooden pole (75mm diameter and ideally 2.4m long) submerged into a

border/or lawn and grow your wisteria as a standard shrub. Or even use a large container to display your shrub. The pruning and tying of branches to create a ball shaped head are quite simple, but needs to be repeated during the summer months to create a good strong ball or ‘head’ shape.

Pruning should not be considered as a daunting task, but undertaken in the summer to reduce the whip-like growth and then once again during late winter closer back to 2 or 3 buds. Thinning of older specimens to reduce some of the branches can also be done during winter dormancy. There are lots of different varieties to choose from; Look for an Award of Garden Merit from the RHS as a guide to good plant qualities. Think about fragrance, flower power, flower colour and planting location before purchasing your wisteria. These fully-hardy, deciduous climbers do require good soil nutrient and reasonable moisture levels for superb flower power, but they are an excellent addition to any garden. Hernias can occur in anyone

On average 120,000 hernia operations are performed in the UK each year. Debbie Thorpe of Spire Norwich Hospital discusses this common complaint with consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon Mr Simon Wemyss-Holden.

H

ernias can occur for various

reasons, typically during sports activities or when performing manual tasks such as lifting and stretching – following which you may experience a sharp pain or notice the appearance of a swelling. It might take a long time for a hernia to develop or it could develop suddenly. A hernia is a small lump that occurs when some of the contents of the abdomen (such as part of the intestine) push through a weakness in the abdominal wall. Picture your most comfortable armchair, you know, the one with all the stuffing protruding out the sides, well it’s the same concept. Hernias can occur in anyone, although more commonly in men than women. They result from a strain in the stomach or groin area when pressure is raised through activities including persistent coughing, lifting heavy objects or even straining on the toilet. They are not usually painful, but many people feel an ache over a hernia which worsens after any activity. In time, the hernia might become bigger as the gap in the muscle or ligament tissue becomes larger. Leaving your hernia untreated may cause it to become larger and uncomfortable and therefore a hernia operation may be necessary not only to alleviate symptoms but more importantly to prevent complications developing. There are four main types of hernia, the different types of hernia typically affect different groups of people. Inguinal hernia (groin) is the most common type of hernia accounting for over three out of every four cases. Risk factors for inguinal hernias include: • your sex, they are more common in men • your age, they are more common as you get older • being overweight • performing lots of heavy lifting • having a chronic, long term cough • having chronic constipation Femoral hernia (lower groin) is less common with an average of 3,400 femoral hernia repairs performed in the UK each year. Femoral hernias are four times more common in women than men and there is

a high risk of serious problems if femoral hernias are left untreated. Incisional hernia occurs when body tissue pushes through a previous scar or wound. They are more common if you’ve had a scar in the past which didn’t heal correctly (for example, the wound had an infection following surgery). Incisional hernias typically occur within two years of the original operation. Umbilical hernia (belly button) occur around the belly button and can be present from birth. They are more common in children and nine out of ten cases get better without treatment. Surgical intervention would be required if the hernia does not resolve unaided. Adults who develop an umbilical hernia will require surgery as it will not get better without intervention. What is a hernia operation? The type of surgery you receive will depend on the type of hernia you have. There are two types of surgical technique to correct a hernia. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery involves three small cuts (0.5 to 1cm long) on your abdomen whilst under a general anaesthetic (with you asleep). The surgeon then inserts a telescopic camera just below the tummy button to view the hernia on a video monitor. The hernia is then repaired using specially designed surgical instruments passed through the 2 other cuts. A strong synthetic mesh is attached to the inside of the abdominal wall to re-inforce the ‘hole’ thereby repairing the hernia. Open surgery requires a single cut (5 to 10cm long) to the skin over the hernia. Under a local or general anaesthetic the ‘bulge’ is pushed back into place and your surgeon stitches a synthetic mesh over the weak spot, similar to laparoscopic surgery. The cut skin is then closed with dissolvable stitches. Both laparoscopic and open surgery take on average 20 to 40 minutes in theatre and are performed as a day case procedure meaning you could go home on the same day. When asked about the pros and cons of an open or laparoscopic repair, Mr WemyssHolden comments: “Although I perform both open and laparoscopic hernia repairs, I usually advise the laparoscopic operation 81

in the majority of cases as the recovery time is reduced with most patients returning to work after about 10 days rather than 6 – 8 weeks after an open operation. The advantage of an open repair however is that it can be performed under local anaesthetic which avoids the need for a general anaesthetic.” What are the risks? Hernia repair is a commonly performed and generally safe operation. Your surgeon will discuss the risks and possible complications during a one-to-one consultation prior to any surgery being performed. Some of the complications associated with a hernia repair may include: • a build up of blood or fluid in the space left by the hernia, this will usually get better without treatment • pain or numbness caused by damage to the nerve, stitches trapping a nerve, mesh applied too tightly or scar tissue forming (this is more likely during open surgery) • the wound becoming infected requiring antibiotic treatment • there is about a 1/200 chance of the hernia recurring. Mr Wemyss-Holden concludes “there have been major advances in hernia surgery over the course of the last 10 to 15 years including the introduction of new meshes and the development of the laparoscopic repair. The operation can now be tailored to patients’ individual requirements and recovery times after surgery are generally much reduced. Your surgeon will discuss all of this with you during your consultation in order for you to make an informed decision about surgery”. The Sparrow family brought the boatyard in the summer of 2014 – acquiring a business that was known and loved by the local community. The owners have built on the legacy they inherited and have set about trying to bring the boatyard into the present day, while keeping its wholesome values intact. The houseboats have been given a makeover inside and out, with colours inspired by the Suffolk palette. Free wifi has been added across the site for all guests, and acquiring the field next to the boatyard has ensured that all access routes

to their houseboats are on their land. All guests have use of a dingy and, if they choose, have the opportunity to try out a basic sailing pack to have a true ‘Swallows and Amazons’ experience on the River Waveney. There is also a DVD and book library, so if the fickle English weather casts a few showers on your stay, you can snuggle up and watch a film or read that novel you’ve always promised yourself. This past winter, Hippersons has installed a unique floating luxury glamping pod, called Secret Water, supported by the Leader fund. This fabulous pod has underfloor heating, a wet room with a shower and a larger deck for watching the river world go by. It has bespoke bunk beds made by Stephen in the boatyard, is fitted out to a high spec and it really does take glamping to a new level of luxury. As the only one of its kind in the UK, Secret Water

is an experience you can tell your friends about, and if you try a short break this season you will be one of the first to do so. While staying at Secret Water, why not get active with an outdoor activity? This season, Hippersons has introduced canoe, kayak and bike hire, available from May to September. Something else new this season is a Thursday Twilight boat hire deal, where you can hire a dayboat for the golden time between 5:15pm and sunset – perfect for a romantic cruise or picnic supper. Back on dry land, the boatyard has secured additional Leader funding to build another glamping pod, which will be positioned next to the allotment. Able to sleep four people, this will be another string to the evolving boatyard’s bow.

Broad Get on

D i s c o v e r No r f o l k ’s f a m o u s B r o a d s i n t h e b e s t w a y – b y b o a t . F r o m a f e r r y t o M i s s i s s i p p i p a d d l e s t e a m e r, t h e o p t i o n s a r e as varied as the Broads themselves.

There is little doubt that Norfolk is best known for its Broads – a National Park weaved with waterways, boasting beautiful countryside, wonderful wildlife and picture-perfect towns to explore. But did you know that the Broads were man-made? They were formed in medieval times when people dug for peat to use as fuel, and were later flooded. In the booming Victorian era, the lock-free waterways were used for transporting goods, but now they are purely a destination for pleasure. The best way to explore and enjoy the Broads is, of course, by boat, and there

feature on the Broads since the 1930s, although the boats of today are far more comfortable (and environmentally friendly). You can hire such a boat the length and breadth of the Broads, either for a week’s holiday or simply for a day tootling along with the family and a picnic. New for 2019, Hippersons boatyard in Beccles claims to be the only place where you can hire a day boat at a reduced rate for a sunset cruise. The Twilight Thursdays offer means you can pick up a boat after 5:15pm and literally sail into the sunset – just remember to back in time for that

Also in Beccles, and if you don’t fancy being in charge of your own boat, you can always take a trip on the memorably named Big Dog Ferry. They run a regular passenger boat service between Beccles and Geldeston Locks Inn – a three-mile journey along the River Waveney before you disembark for a drink or meal (or both) at the inn. You can then catch the ferry back to Beccles or wander along the many footpaths, where you may spot kingfishers and even otters. After that journey, especially on a hot day, you’ll have earned a cooling dip, and you can swim outdoors but without dodging motor cruisers at the Beccles Lido, just next to the Big Dog Ferry. The heated open-air pool has been renovated in recent years and has a slide and springboard for the more adventurous, as well as a café, sun loungers and spectator area if you simply want to take in the stunning views of the

river. Top tip: the Lido also does canoe hire, if you book ahead. If you want to combine some tour element to your boat trip, you should check out Broads Tours. They have a fleet of double-decker boats based out of Wroxham, with full commentary from the skipper. You can enjoy refreshments on board, and trips take between 1 and 2 hours. Dogs are also welcome. The Broads Authority offers a range boat trips, including some environmentally friendly options. How about the Electric Eel – an Edwardian-style electric boat that glides silently around the How Hill National Nature Reserve doing a Wildlife Water Trail? The electric launch Liana takes tours on the southern Broads and the River Waveney. Or explore Barton Broad on the Ra – a solar-powered boat named after the Egyptian sun god. the last remaining wherry yachts. Wherry Yacht Charter is a charity that looks after four of the last eight wherries in existence. Preserving these elegant yachts, with their iconic sails, means we can enjoy them with either a free onboard viewing or even on a sailing day. Volunteers from the charity are on hand to explain the history of the wherries, which are also available for private charter. Fancy something that’s more Huckleberry Finn? The Southern Comfort is a US-style paddle boat that can carry 100 passengers on its two decks. Purpose-built for the Broads, this unique cruiser runs regular trips from Horning along the River Bure and to Ranworth Broad. Commentary comes from the knowledgeable crew, although the accents may be more Martham than Mississippi. Finally, 2019 is a landmark year for Hoveton Great Broad as it marks the 50th anniversary of their famous Nature Trail – making it one of the oldest in the UK. In 1958, Hoveton Great Broad became one of a growing band of designated Nature Reserves, and attracted the attention of conservationist Dr Martin George. He became fascinated with Hoveton Great Broad and created a path that he felt shed light on the fascinating woodland and landscape beyond the water. That path became the Nature Trail in 1969 and it now attracts thousands of visitors who come to take in the pristine woodland and undisturbed nature of the site. Discover ancient trees and wild flora and fauna, not to mention a wide selection of wildlife. As it is only accessible by boat, the Nature Trail remains relatively untouched and a peaceful haven for both wildlife and visitors.

Since 1980 we have provided in excess of 70 million hours of care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably lead s to either at the time of an assessm ent or even years later, to questions for whi ch people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to findin g out, especially at a time of crisis, abo ut specific factors can be difficult and stre ssful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with thei r search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us... Question: “If a person needs incontinence pads can they get them free from the NHS?” Answer: You may be able to get incontinence pads on the NHS but it depends on your local NHS organisation. Your GP, nurse or incontinence team should be able to tell you whether the NHS will cover the cost of pads in your area. Question: “I have had it suggested to me that I can apply to my local council for a grant to make my bathroom disabled friendly. If I am successful do I have to pay the grant back?” Answer: The Disabled Facilities Grant is there if you need to make changes to your home to help you live independently. However, the DFG is means tested so depending on your financial situation you may have to pay it back.

Question: “My daughter, who lives some distance from me, is suggesting I have a personal alarm as I am now entering my 80’s. What exactly are they for, how do they work and what is the cost?” Answer: A personal alarm, usually in the format of a pendant or a bracelet means that you are connected to a support system 24 hours a day. By activating the device, you can immediately call for help if you need to do so. It may be that you have fallen, either in your home or in your garden, you feel ill, you want someone to contact your family. If you live alone, they are a reliable contact to the outside world when you have an emergency. Prices range from around £13 to £16.00 per month. Question: “I made a complaint to my local council about a family care package. I am not happy about the decision of the council. Is there another organisation I can appeal to regarding the decision reached?” Answer: Yes, you can contact the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. Question: “A friend has dementia and has carers who daily attend her in her own home. She has not seen a dentist for a long while, since she moved to this area and I think she may have need of some serious dental treatment. I made the offer to her family who live away, that I 95

would �ind a dentist for her. Are their dentists that have special skills for people who have dementia?” Answer: I would suggest that you contact your local Community Dental Service who will either advise you of a local dentist who does have specialist skills or will organise a dental service for her. If the person’s dementia reaches a point where their dentist can no longer manage their treatment needs, they might be referred to the local salaried community dental service or local specialist dental service. Details of the local community dental service can be obtained from the local primary care organisation (England), the local health board (Wales) or the local trust (Northern Ireland). If you have a problem identifying the relevant organisation where you live, make contact with your local Alzheimer’s Society for further advice. Question: “I am blind and travelling abroad for a break. I have heard that I can get a sticker to put on my passport so that I can identify it quickly in my travel bag. Where can I get one from?” Answer: Braille passport stickers are available to put on to your passport and the wording is simple just ‘passport’. PENSION SAVINGS IT WAS ON A recent Chrissie Jackson show on Radio Norfolk that I was chatting about self-employment to listeners who called in with questions. We talked about pensions and one caller commented that he was unsure whether money he put into a pension would be safe. When I reflected on this conversation afterwards, I regretted not addressing this more specifically. It is sad that despite many safeguards being introduced over recent years, pensions are still considered with some suspicion. Their reputation hasn’t been helped by stories of failures such as the British Home Stores scheme, where a huge scheme deficit was discovered on the collapse of the business, although resources have now been found to meet most of the scheme’s obligations. So how safe are your pension savings? In fact, in the vast majority of cases your savings are protected by Government-backed schemes. How that protection is applied will depend on the type of pension scheme you have in place. Protection is provided by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if you are a member of a defined contribution scheme – either a personal pension or a workplace pension – where the total value of your pension fund is determined by three elements: contributions made by you and possibly your employer, tax relief awarded by HM Revenue & Customs and investment gains/growth on your fund. The FSCS protects 100 per cent of your pension savings where they are directly managed by an insurance company. This means that if the insurance company holding your pension savings collapses, the FSCS

Those who have not yet reached retirement normally get 90 per cent of the benefits they might have expected from the scheme. The PPF is funded by levies on private sector employers who have defined benefit schemes for their staff. There has recently been a trend for defined benefit scheme members to transfer their benefits to a defined contribution scheme under the pension freedom rules which were introduced in 2015. However, transferring is often not in the member’s best interests as valuable benefits could be lost. Certainly, security of your pension savings should not normally be a reason to leave a defined benefit scheme. If you are looking at the possibility of transferring your defined benefit pension entitlements, it is critical that you get independent advice first. Jordan have owned Pensthorpe Natural Park since 2003 and the stunning 700-acre nature reserve and day visitor attraction, near Fakenham, is a haven for wildlife with over 500 different species recorded. With ancient woodland, wetland walks, glorious gardens, a woodland play area, WildRootz, an eco-indoor play area, Hootz House, and a jam-packed programme of special events running throughout the year, the former host of BBC Springwatch has something for all ages. Bill and Deb are passionate to promote the power of nature and we caught up with Bill, a founder of Jordans Cereals, for a chat about Norfolk… What do you like about living in Norfolk? The space and areas of wilderness, including the amazing stretches of beach and the coastline in winter. Is there anything you dislike? Public transport is rather limited in some parts of rural Norfolk, so it would be wonderful to have more ease in exploring such an exceptional county. Where do you like to eat and drink? There are a lot of very good pubs and restaurants around us, and some interesting Thai food too. The Kings Head Letheringsett is a favourite. What do you like to do when you are not working? Possibly a bit of a busman’s holiday, but I enjoy visiting Norfolk’s many

nature reserves and wandering through Pensthorpe when our visitors have returned home. Do you have any hobbies? I try to keep my cycling mileage up but am having second thoughts having entered the Norwich 100 in June as the drive of James Cracknell seems to have missed me! What attracted you to take ownership of Pensthorpe? It was partly about being more involved with growing food and supporting wildlife, which was something I had become interested in at Jordans Cereals. Deb and I were captivated by all the wildlife and amazing possibilities that were on offer at Pensthorpe. We just hope we have done it justice in our first 16 years of guardianship. What have been the highlights since you have owned Pensthorpe? It has been great to see a young team at Pensthorpe introduce and develop nature-based play and activities to a new generation of nature lovers. What are your future plans for Pensthorpe? One of our projects is to work closely with 17 neighbouring Wensum Valley farmers as part of a ‘Cluster Group’ to encourage better habitats and more wildlife on a landscape scale. What challenges does Pensthorpe face? Tourism is very important to Norfolk and to Pensthorpe and it is essential that we all develop the visitor economy by extending

the season and providing more investment and training to enhance what is on offer. Have you had any amusing incidents you can tell us about since being at Pensthorpe? It wasn’t funny at the time, but I can now manage a wry smile when I think of our German Shepherd being sick on a busy Coasthopper bus and having to clean up the mess with two tissues loaned from a startled passenger, and forfeit my remaining dry running kit! What is coming up at Pensthorpe over the next few months? We have a busy spring and summer with our Wild About the Wensum community event on May 12th showcasing the beautiful Wensum Valley, followed by the Pensthorpe Bird and Wildlife fair on 18th and 19th May, celebrating Norfolk’s credential’s as a birding and wildlife hotspot. Our summer holidays ‘Nature’s Wild Tribe’ event will be a great way for families to enjoy bonding outside enjoying the wilder side of the reserve. Can you sum up Pensthorpe in �ive words?
