Rock in the wood
FOREST LIVE is a series of topquality gigs in the beautiful Thetford Fore st, which just gets better each year, and 2019 is no exception. Kicking things off on 20 June are indie rock band Foals. With two of their five albums to date nominated for the Mercury Prize, and voted Best Act In The World today by Q magazine in 2015, this is going to me a memorable performance by a band at their peak. Next up comes the Modfather him self, Paul Weller, on 21 June. The Jam legend, Style Council supremo and solo star will be playing selected tacks from his back catalogue to an adoring audienc e. Saturday 22 June sees a change of pace and audience profile with pop pow erhouse Jess Glynne taking to the Thetford Forest stage. Amazingly, Glynne has the most number-one singles by a British female solo artist (7, at the last count). That should sort out a chunk of her set, then. Finishing up the series in style on Sunday 23 June are Welsh wonders Ster eophonics. Since bursting onto the scene with a bang in the late 90s, the band has secu red a string of hit singles and top-selling albu ms, and have forged a reputation as on Brit ain’s best live acts. A fitting finale to a serie s of gigs that help preserve the fantastic forests that host them. 20-23 June, Thetford Forest, pric vary. www.forestryengland.uk es
Homegrown Festival THIS FESTIVAL in only started in 2013, but it’s already causing quite a stir. Drawing exclusively on acts from East Anglia, and therefore providing a muchneeded showcase for local talent. Dozens of acts will appear over the weekend and, best of all, it’s all free to enter (plus you can pay for a weekend camping ticket). They also like to keep prices low, unlike many festivals where you have to take out a second mortgage to get a pint. A great weekend to show your support for local musicians without breaking the bank. 7-8 June, Suffolk Academy, Bury St Edmunds. www.homegrownfest.co.uk
Great Yarmouth Arts Festival A FORTNIGHT OF fine arts awaits you at the annual Great Yarmouth Arts Festival. Originally held to raise money for the Minster Preservation Trust, the festival has grown into a highlight on the town’s cultural calendar, and a welcome showcase of the talented people that call Great Yarmouth home. The festival, first held in 2012, takes places across various venues in the town, from public spaces like the Market Place to established centres like Hippodrome Circus and St George’s Theatre. Keep an eye on the festival website for details of all shows at this year’s event. 7-16 June, various locations, times & prices. www.greatyarmouthartsfestival.co.uk

Open-air Cinema THE LUNA CINEMA will once again transform the grounds of the Holkham walled garden into the ultimate setting for two nights of blockbuster cinema under the stars. Bring along your blankets (trust us, sometimes a sleeping bag is a great idea), chairs and picnics settle down for us two of the biggest films of the last few years. First up, it’s singalong fun with The Greatest Showman. Hugh Jackman plays the eponymous show-off PT Barnham in a
dazzling show that was one of the surprise smash hits of 2017. Penniless but ambitious, PT Barnham rose from nothing to become a worldwide sensation, shifting the focus to the unique and peculiar, introducing never-seen-before live acts to his circus stage but has he lost sight of what’s most important as he gambles everything in pursuit of fame? The soundtrack to the movie topped the album charts for most of 2018 so there’s a strong chance there will be plenty of singing along, which is actively encouraged here. For the second movie under the stars, you might need something of a more dynamic vocal range, as you try to emulate the incomparable Freddie Mercury and Queen. A foot-stomping celebration of the iconic rock superstars, this story follows the band from the early days to the memorable Live Aid performance in 1985. Expect this screening to take audience participation to a new level, especially during those Live Aid scenes where Mercury whips the crowd into a chanting, clapping frenzy. There is also food and drink available, including a full bar. We love outdoor cinema, but our only gripes is the fact that they have to wait until 9:30pm to start the films due to lighter nights. So be warned, that means a late finish close to midnight for the Queen flick. 28 and 29 June, Holkham Walled Garden, 9:30pm, doors 8pm, £15, £10 children. www.thelunacinema.com
Al Murray JOIN EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE opinionated pub landlord as he casts his beady eye over the state of the nation. Landlord of Hope & Glory is the new show from the multiple award-winner, and perhaps perfectly timed in these tumultuous times for Britain. As Murray says of his new show, our tomorrow beckons. A new tomorrow that smells reassuringly of yesterday, but with wifi. This really is back to the future stuff, and the landlord is sure to set the world to rights, with pint in hand. Catch him at two venues in the area this month. 15 June, Lowestoft Marina Theatre, 7:30pm, £30. Tel: 01502 533200 16 June, Norwich Theatre Royal, 7:30pm, £30. Tel: 01603 630000
Wells Heritage Arts Trail THE FIRST OUTDOOR ART TRAIL in Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk, will take place this summer, with a series of sculptures celebrating the town’s rich and varied history. All the work in the Wells Heritage Art Trail has been created by Norfolk artists specifically for the event which will open on Saturday 23 June and which will run until the end of September. The Trail has been curated by well-known Wells residents and art experts John and Yvonne Millwood and should take around an hour-and-a-half to complete. Felixstowe Book Festival THIS IS HOW the story started. Felixstowe resident Meg Reid (perfect name for a book festival organiser) was driving home from enjoying the Cambridge Word Fest, and wondered why her own town couldn’t host its own book festival. The first festival in Felixstowe was held in 2013 and it continues to thrive in the town. With author talks and discussions, writing workshops and competitions, this is a must for book lovers. Guest authors discussing their work include Prue Leith (discussing her fictional saga The Angelotti Chronicles), Grantchester creator James Runcie, Alan Johnson introducing his music memoir In My Life, historian Simon Heffer, Jonathan Coe discussing his Brexit lament Middle England, and many more. Whether an aspiring writer or avid reader, all roads lead to Felixstowe. 27-30 June, various venues across Felixstowe. www.felixstowebookfestival.co.uk

Don Pasquale THERE’S A REAL treat for opera fans this month as the Welsh National Opera presents a new version of Donizetti’s classic comedy, taking place in and around a kebab van. Yes, you read that right. This contemporary production brings the classic story of an old bachelor’s romantic delusions and the young lovers who outwit him bang up to date for 2019. We meet a cast of larger-than-life characters, including Pasquale’s young nephew, wannabe musician Ernesto, and his girlfriend Norina, as well as local geezer Malatesta who, along with his travelling band, hangs around Pasquale’s kebab van after their long nights of boozing. Pasquale’s quest to find a wife and produce
a son and heir to his kebab empire shocks Ernesto into action, and he and Norina conspire to trick the old man, secure their future and drag him into the 21st century. Director Daisy Evans and Conductor Stephen Higgins have collaborated to give the traditional tale a modern setting. Performed by four singers and an onstage ensemble who also become part of the action, this is a great new take on a timeless opera. Sung in English and with a contemporary setting, this is a great introduction to the art form for novices and youngsters. 20 and 22 June, Norwich Playhouse, 7:30pm, £20 to £23. Tel: 01603 630000
FANS OF FOLK pay attention. The event showcases stunning arrangements of traditional dance tunes and songs, bringing their innovative and playful style to life through both music, image and spoken word, with all the joy of a summer’s festival to the thrill of a winter’s fireside rapper sword-dance. This promises to be a striking and powerful musical experience in English culture, tradition and history for audiences of all ages. You won’t see anything else like it, so grab yourself a ticket fast.

Summer Laughter Show 2019 “IT’S LIKE A SEASIDE POSTCARD come to life” said Norfolk Legend Olly Day, which sums up the Summer laughter show billed as ‘a full and fun-packed family show’ with a ‘feel good factor’. The evening bursts into life with a medley of salsa songs from Lisa Marie starting with Gloria Estefans’s ‘Rhythms Gonna Get You’. A vivacious troupe of six neon clad dancers will get you straight in the party mood. Andy Pelos, who performs with Showaddywaddy, is an excellent singer, whether its classic pop, musical theatre or rock. In duos with Lisa Marie, their voices are perfectly matched, moving seamlessly through classic Elton John numbers ‘Pinball Wizard, ‘Don’t go Breaking My Heart’ and ‘I’m Still Standing’. Andy is in his element singing ‘Dancing Fool ‘demonstrating his terpsichorean talents, glamourous showgirls with feather fans and high cut sequinned costumes hinting at the glamour of Hollywood musicals. Andy and Olly Day’s chocolate-smooth voice, pair beautifully in classic tunes such as ‘Luck be Lady Tonight’ from Guys and Dolls. Comedy is provided by Nigel (Boy) Syer and Olly Day, both stalwarts of Norfolk entertainment, bringing the OAP couple ‘ Arthur and Elsie Fitztightly’ to life in a comedy skit about the vagaries of married life and I suspect, a few ad libs! Olly Day is also a magician with superb comedy timing as he brings a volunteer from the audience into the act. Nigel is an all round entertainer, charming the audience with his Norfolk accent which is perfect for the Singing Postman’s ‘Have you got a light Boi’. Lisa Marie’s slowed down jazz
version of ‘ The Locomotion ‘ is inspired with it’s Bob Fosse dance routine culminating in the finale ‘Come Alive’ from The Greatest Showman. It reveals the range of talent within the company - a combination of classic End of the Pier humour and sophistication that’s a real winner. Sue King has outdone herself this year with costumes, choreography and a breath-taking aerial display. A performer with the Hippodrome circus for many years, she has brought together a variety show that would grace a cruise ship and brings a great evening’s entertainment to a jewel of an independent theatre that has Danny Boyle as it’s patron. Gorleston’s Pavilion Theatre is a gem of Edwardian architecture currently under restoration. Kevin Lynch and Stuart Malkovich received a joint Greater Yarmouth Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, the affection they feel for the Seafront Theatre is obvious. After 25 years the effort they put into producing the longest running Summer Show in the country is phenomenal, with performances every Tuesday from May into October. Most of the cast are regulars, familiarity leading to polished performances and an easy flow of banter. While there are old favourites for the locals, there’s new songs and routines (it’s worth the ticket price to see what Nigel (Boy) Syer does with 2 party blowers and an accordion). It’s a must see for nostalgic fun, polished performances and is a genuine Variety Show. www.gorlestonpavilion.co.uk
BeWILDerwood THE CURIOUS TREEHOUSE ADVENTURE has invested £200,000 in the Towering Treetop Tangles; the first major structure to be built at BeWILDerwood since the Sky Maze opened in 2014. Reaching more than 30 feet high and covering more than 1,000 square feet, it is aimed at the slightly bigger, more adventurous kids. It includes exciting ground play, nets to clamber across, high-level walkways, climbing walls and challenging play equipment up in the treetops. The Tangles is designed to encourage creative, free-spirited play, and daring grown-ups are fully encouraged to scale the heights and join the fun too. “Even though the Twiggles and Boggles created this fabulous new addition to BeWILDerwood ready for the start of the 2019 season, they’ve been titivating it over the last few months.” said Tom Blofeld. “We’re delighted that our visitors are loving the Towering Treetop Tangles and enjoying all the opportunities it offers for adventurous play. Ropes and scramble-nets can turn into vines and quicksand in the blink of an eye: the fun is only limited by the imagination of our visitors.” Hattie Dent, age 11, is a member of the Junior Boggle Board, one of 12 children invited to advise the Twiggle Team on what they’d like to see from BeWILDerwood. The Boggle Board gave the Towering Treetop Tangles their seal of approval in Februar. Millie Batch, aka BeWILDerwood’s Little Sparkly of Marketing Malarkey, said: “BeWILDerwood is designed to get families and friends playing together in the WILD woods; exploring, sliding and clambering. A day here is the perfect opportunity for kids and grown-ups to get back to ‘proper play’, making memories in the fresh woodland air.” BeWILDerwood is open to WILD Explorers every day until the end of September and on weekends and school holidays until the end of October. www.BeWILDerwood.co.uk 13

Matilda EXCITEMENT has already started to build for what is guaranteed to be the theatrical treat of the summer holidays in East Anglia with more than half of tickets already sold. The multi-award-winning show comes with a fantastic recommendation having been seen by more than 7.7 million people worldwide over the past eight years. The uplifting tale is about a gifted and brave girl, Matilda Wormwood, who loves books but is born to parents who don’t understand her and reject her because they wanted a boy, not a girl. Matilda is sent to a school run by the terrifying and bullying Miss Trunchbull, but she is befriended by caring teacher Miss Honey and her fightback begins. The musical was commissioned in 2010 by the RSC. It was written by renowned
playwright Denis Kelly, while antipodean comedian, actor and musician Tim Minchin wrote the lyrics and music. The show’s memorable tunes include Revolting Children and When I Grow Up. Having premiered at the RSC’s Stratfordupon-Avon home, the show transferred to London’s West End where it opened to rave reviews. It has now played in over 60 cities worldwide and won over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical. It swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards with a record-breaking seven awards, and also garnered four Tony Awards and a Tony Honour for Excellence in the Theatre for the four girls who shared the title role on Broadway. 16 July - 17 August, Norwich Theatre Royal, times vary. WHEN MARRIED hairdresser Rita enrols on a university course to expand her horizons, little does she realise where the journey will take her. Her tutor Frank is a frustrated poet, brilliant academic and dedicated drinker, who’s less than enthusiastic about taking Rita on, but the two soon realise how much they have to teach each other. This hilarious and heart-warming comedy won the Olivier award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi award-winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine. This production in Norwich sees the wonderful Stephen Tompkinson reprising the Caine role, with Jessica Johnson playing the eponymous middle-aged housewife looking to better herself, in one of Willy Russell’s best comedies. 10-15 June, Norwich Theatre Royal, times vary, £10 to £29.50. EDDI READER will always be fondly remembered as the quirky singer of 80s band Fairground Attraction, and their huge hit Perfect. Who can forget the flame-haired frontwoman twisting on a canal boat in the video, wearing sunglasses while her bandmates sheltered under umbrellas? We can’t. That single and the album First Of A Million Kisses topped the UK charts, but it’s one small chapter in a career that has now lasted 40 years, with Reader returning to The Apex this month to showcase new album Cavalier. Described as a creative peak, Cavalier incorporates both contemporary and traditional songs and draws on the singer’s Scottish country rock roots. Don’t settle for anything less. 25 June, The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, 7:30pm, £25. Tel: 01284 75800 www.theapex.co.uk

Waitress
This month our resident West End theatre critic Benet Catty went to see Waitress at The Adelphi Theatre in London
At last the Adelphi Theatre has a really enjoyable musical on its stage. Following the over-praised Kinky Boots and the under-considered Made in Dagenham, Waitress – now entering its fourth year on Broadway – has in common with those two shows that it is based on a cult film and is broadly about gender politics. Unlike those, though, it is lead by an all-female creative team (book, score, direction, choreography, musical direction) and it is not pretentious. And it’s very good. Its many pleasures do not wholly disguise the pantry full of clichés which makes up much of its plot. Jenna is a waitress and pies supremo at a cafe in Hicksville where she works alongside kooky (tiny and bespectacled, of course) Dawn and sassy Becky (a black, bluesy ballbreaker, inevitably). Their boss is a grumpy bearded bloke who talks a lot about “firing your ass”. Their owner is a cantankerous old coot with a Yosemite Sam voice who has more of a heart than his mouth usually betrays. Jenna is trying hard to save up enough money to leave her husband, who – as they always are – is a drunken misogynist possessing a violent streak and a need to be loved which is not in the least lovable. Jenna develops a bond with a doctor who has the kind of social anxiety which makes one wonder how he ever got through medical school. If the plot was a pie it would be in the “reduced” section. What elevates Waitress is the script by Jennie Nelson (based on the 2007 film by Adrienne Shelley) which is funny without being sitcom and tender without being cloying. The catchy songs are by multiple Grammy-nominee Sara Bareilles. It is also tightly and honestly acted with none of the self-indulgence or reaching for laughs which this kind of material could easily inspire. Shaun Prendergast is funny and ultimately moving as the Yosemite Sam
figure, David Hunter is warm and witty with a good line in physical comedy as the doctor, and the extravagant insanity of Jack McBrayer (imported from America to play Dawn’s hook-up) sings his (very irritating) number with such cartoonish oddity that one almost doesn’t notice that he’s singing about stalking this kooky plain-Jane. The show ultimately stands or falls on the strength of Jenna, played by Katharine McPhee (who also played it in New York). Once a winner of American Idol but better known here as the lead Karen Cartwright
Director Diane Paulus, whose work was last seen here a decade ago with her New York-originated revival of Hair, stages Waitress with great precision and pace on Scott Pask’s striking set aided by the constant movement from choreographer Lorin Latarro.
in the guilty pleasure TV series Smash, McPhee brings the same impressive blend of qualities to this as she did to that. The character’s dreams are big, like her singing voice, but her hope is small, like her speaking voice, and the way in which she moves from the one to the other touchingly expresses the character’s essential schism of need and hope. Her scenes with Peter Hannah as the hillbilly hell husband which could so easily be wince-inducingly unpleasant or cliched - are played really well and the uncomfortable silence in the audience mirrors the absence of love in the relationship. Director Diane Paulus, whose work was last seen here a decade ago with her New York-originated revival of Hair, stages Waitress with great precision and pace on Scott Pask’s striking set aided by the constant movement from choreographer Lorin Latarro. It reminds us how, for all the many virtues of British musicals, few ever achieve the slickness which Broadway can provide. The only real problem is the sound design: in most songs I doubt I caught more than one word in ten that was sung, drowned out by the (very impressive) band lead by Katharine Woolley, and when one is sat in the middle of Row G, the theatre’s premium seats, it would be good to hear more than that. Despite strong reviews, Waitress is not the mega-hit of the theatre season but it deserves to have a good London run. It’s a well-staged warm-hearted exploration of women taking control of their lives and, for all its clichés, it feels nicely suited to the cultural moment. It may be a bit of a concoction, with hints of spice and a fair bit of sugar, but it is a dish worth savoring. WAITRESS is now on at The Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End

HENRY MOORE AT HOUGHTON HALL
Out&About
Festival Season
Henry Moore at Houghton Hall In a unique collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, Houghton Hall in Norfolk presents a major exhibition of the work of artist Henry Moore. Entitled Henry Moore at Houghton Hall: Nature and Inspiration, this is the first significant show of the artist’s work in the region. The exhibition will include several monumental outdoor pieces in the grounds of the house, as well as a selection of smaller works, models and etchings, which will be shown in the ground floor gallery spaces. In recent years, Lord Cholmondeley has built up an impressive collection of contemporary sculpture by world renowned artists, which are displayed in the gardens and grounds at Houghton. These include works by James Turrell, Richard Long, Anya Gallaccio, Stephen Cox, Zhan Wang, Jeppe Hein, Rachel Whiteread and Phillip King. An amazing opportunity to visit the incredible hall and also encounter great works by some of the world’s leading artists. The hall is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, as well on Saturdays from 20 July. The exhibition runs until 29 September. www.houghtonhall.com
Kings Lynn Festival, 14-27 July
Taking inspiration from the 50th anniversary of the moon landings, this year’s Kings Lynn Festival has a fascinating Science and Arts theme. This is heady stuff, and proof if needed that you don’t have to venture out of the region to get your slice of intellectual stimulation. Everyone’s favourite Professor, Robert Winston, will host a lecture on Manipulating Humans, while Dr Matthew Bothwell of the Cambridge Institute of Astronomy will narrate a new composition by Tim Watts depicting the creation of the universe. And if you’re head is not still spinning after that, The London Handel Players will perform a piece by
the 18th century Astronomer Royal, William Herschel. The star-studded festival welcomes back the appropriately down-to-earth soprano Lesley Garrett, who this year will team up with clarinettist Emma Johnson, violinist Tasmin Little shares the stage with pianist Piers Lane and the world-famous Endellion String Quartet will present the Ruth Fermoy Memorial Concert. The popular coffee concerts will feature musical stars of the future, and to round off a programme with something for everyone, there’s the incredible Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, treating classical fans to Beethoven’s rarely-performed Triple Concerto. www.kingslynnfestival.org.uk

LANA DEL RAY, LATITUDE FESTIVAL
RICH HALL, MAVERICK FESTIVAL
Out&About Gorleston Clifftop Festival, 27-28 July From the sublime to the deliberately (at times) ridiculous, with a family fun extravaganza featuring everything from prancing dogs to wrestling. Yes, it’s the fabulous Gorleston Clifftop Festival. Clifftop fun may sound rather perilous, but fret not – this family-friendly extravaganza in Gorleston, just outside Great Yarmouth, celebrating its 20th year, has nothing to do with having a head for heights. Instead, this festival includes a cunning mix of live music (40 hours across two stages), a large fun fair, a fun dog show, children’s arena and plenty of stalls to browse and buy treats. Variety is the order of the day, in good seaside tradition, so you can also expect to see a strongman competition, wrestling, comedy, basketball, dance and various local charities showcasing their valuable work. Visitors are welcome to take their own food and drink or take advantage of the many food stalls and bars dotted around the site – offering everything from hog roast to hot dogs. Two fun-packed days of family fun not to be missed. www.clifftopfestival.info

Latitude Festival, 19-21 July
When it comes to top music festivals, the award-winning Latitude is right up there with the best of British. Held just outside Southwold in Suffolk, not only is the location amazing, but the family-friendly line up is hugely impressive. This year, headline acts include George Ezra, Snow Patrol and Lana Del Ray, while you can also catch Primal Scream, Underworld, Chvrches, Sigrid, and dozens of more established and up-and- coming acts. There is also a dedicated comedy arena, featuring the likes of Jason Manford, Russell Kane, Nish Kumar, Michelle Wolf and Mark Watson. There are areas especially for kids, teens and families with workshops, activities and attractions – try everything from star gazing to pizza making, theatre to science, literature to visual art. Fans of Idris Elba comedy Turn Up Charlie can also see what Latitude is like when the DJ character visited the festival in episode 6, filmed at last year’s event. With a diverse programme, family friendly atmosphere and stunning headliners, it’s little wonder Latitude is simply one of the nation’s best next generation festivals. Day tickets are available. www.latitudefestival.com

The Holt Festival brings the best in music, theatre, fine art and spoken word to the small town of Holt in north Norfolk each summer, when for one week only the town is taken over by artists and performers. Venues across town include the church, bookshop, hotels, a community centre and theatres (both indoor and in the woods). Top acts heading to Holt in 2019 include Rockstar poet Luke Wright, bestselling writer Kate Mosse, punk princess Toyah, music icon Georgie Fame, and musical comedy sisters Flo & Joan. Alongside the main programme there is also a Children’s Festival running alongside (details to be confirmed), plus a Festival Fringe, Fine Art and the Sir John Hunt Art Prize. www.holtfestival.org
Maverick Festival, 5-7 July Billed as the UK’s first and finest Americana festival, Maverick is held at Easton Farm Park and has been running since 2008. The Daily Telegraph wrote a glowing review, calling Maverick “one of the friendliest, most sincere festivals in England... fine music, great fun, delightful people and an idyllic rural setting”. If that sounds like your thing, and if you have a passion for all things US, this is the festival for you. This year’s line-up includes a stellar mix of artists too numerous to mention, but Rich Hall deserves special mention. The comedian is also an accomplished musician, and via his Otis Lee Crenshaw alter ego’s Hoedown Party has a unique stage act. With movies, workshops and damn fine eating, this is not to be missed. www.maverickfestival.co.uk

The changing face of
Norwich
La st month Vi s i tNorwich laun ch ed a n ew bran d f or No r wi c h, the C i ty of Stories says Melan ie Cook of Visit Norwich .
Around the world, creative
visual identities for tourism destinations have really upped their game in recent years. However, place branding is not a new concept: over 40 years ago, in the back of a taxi, I Heart NY became a thing and has become one of the most recognised (and loved) city brands of all time. More recently, destinations such as Helsinki, Wales and Dundee have taken massive steps in terms of their branding, to present their home turf in a creative and modern way that residents can be proud of. For VisitNorwich and Norwich Business Improvement District, this was the challenge we set ourselves last year. Our branding had not changed in a while, and – like all well-used things – had become a little worn over the years. Not only that, we wanted to make sure that we were going out to the world with the right message about what this city is: creative, dynamic, liveable and uniquely historic, as well as many other things. We needed a contemporary identity that did justice to all that Norwich has to offer. And it was the right time, too. Norwich sits on the edge of a very special year, as in 2020 the whole city will be celebrating numerous anniversaries: Norwich University of the Arts is 175, Jarrold are 250, and the Norfolk and Norwich Festival begin to look forward to their 250th anniversary, too. We will also see the very start of the much-awaited renovation of Norwich Castle, where plans have been made to re-instate all 5 floors of the magnificent Norman keep. And who could forget that in the summer, Dippy the Dinosaur will be finishing his national tour in Norwich Cathedral. This will really be a stunning venue for his final stop. If we were going to re-ignite people’s passion for the city, the time was surely now. So, we commissioned some research. As residents of Norwich and Norfolk, we all know how wonderful the city is, but we wanted to get some insight from further afield. We surveyed over 2,000 people, of all ages and all demographics from around the country and found that Norwich was not necessarily visitors’ first thought when it came to choosing a destination for a weekend away. This presented us with a blank canvas to work with, and an opportunity to put Norwich front and centre in terms of a UK destination that people really must visit. We also discovered that Norwich has
– in spades – what the average visitor is looking for in a city break: People love hidden gems – check; they like less- well know cities because they are more unique – check; they want mini-breaks from everyday life – check; they like low cost and low risk – check; and big events are a hook when choosing a destination – check. So in May, we launched the new branding for ‘Norwich, the City of Stories’, and spent the day out and about in the city giving away limited-edition postcards, bags and badges. At night, our new logo
We’re going to inspire new visitors to come to Norwich - a city that personifies an independent spirit, being geographically and characteristically separate from the rest of the UK. was projected high onto Norwich’s famous castle for the whole city to see, and our specially commissioned installation lit up Millennium Plain. We also invited the people of Norwich to tell their story of the city: we’re collecting real voices, favourite places, local characters and treasured memories, so we can show the rest of the world what Norwich really means to us. If you want to submit a story of your own, you still can at cityofstories.co.uk/postcard – we’d love as many people to get involved as possible! In the coming months, we’ve got big plans for some beautiful marketing and digital campaigns - including a new website in autumn, plus podcasts, film, new photography and some collectable pieces too. We’re going to inspire new visitors to come to Norwich - a city that personifies an independent spirit, being geographically and characteristically separate from the rest of the UK. This – reader – is where you come in. We want local businesses and people to join with us, to become ambassadors. As a collective, we want as many people as
possible to come together to endorse the city we’re all so proud of. Now is the time to change the rhetoric and show everyone what an incredible home we have. To find out how to get involved and events coming up, visit cityofstories.co.uk And, warming us up for 2020, there are some thrilling big events to get people travelling here: already open and ready to visit is the astonishing Henry Moore exhibition at Houghton Hall (1 May – 29 September). This is the first significant show of the artist’s work in East Anglia. Don’t miss the chance to see up, close and personal - gigantic, large-scale bronzes and fibreglass pieces in the stunning grounds of the park as well as smaller works within the Hall itself. Later this month, 27th - 30th June, very excitingly, Norwich and Norfolk welcomes a huge new cycling event - the first HSBC UK National Road Championships. Norwich city centre will be electric on Sunday 30th June as it plays host to the fifth round of the National CrossCountry Series with the elite athletes riding for the British title. And in a first in the championship’s history, the races for both men and women will be on the road simultaneously finishing in Norwich. The women’s race will follow the men’s, followed by the public race (starting and finishing in Norwich) meaning riders will follow behind the championships. Finally, come summer Norwich Cathedral opens Seeing It Differently where visitors will see a 40ft helter skelter installed in the West End of the Nave from August 7 to 18. It is believed to be the first time in the Cathedral’s history that a fairground ride has been installed inside the building. The idea for this highly unusual event came from Revd Canon Andy Bryant, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Care. Riding the helter skelter and being so high above the ground will give visitors the chance to experience the centuries-old space in a new way and open up conversations about faith. In addition, Lie Down Look Up, in the East End of the Nave, will see people lying on yoga mats and looking up at the Cathedral’s ceiling and its roof bosses 69ft above plus there will be much more. As we enter the busy summer
season, finding a quiet spot on the coast is appealing. We have several ‘secret’ beaches in North Norfolk, really only visited by people in the know! You’ll often find it’s just you, the water, the sand and the sky! Here’s our round up (or refresher!) of beaches where you can escape the crowds. Scolt Head Island: Visit here and you’ll feel like you’re really on a desert island! You can only reach the island at low tide and you can walk to it from Burnham Overy Staithe, or by ferry in the Summer. The four-mile-long offshore sandbar is a designated National Nature Reserve, managed by Natural England. The island is mainly made up of sea grass, soft dunes, salt marsh, sea grass, mud flats and wide sandy beaches with pure white sands. Great for walking, swimming and spotting nature such as breeding terns, teal and curlew. It is worth knowing that there are no facilities on the island, and that dogs are not allowed between mid-April and midAugust. Boat trips to and around the island can be arranged through Branta Cruises. Trimingham: The best way to access Trimingham beach is via Mundesley. Head north west along the beach and the further you walk, the quieter it gets! After about an hour of walking, you will reach the secluded sands of Trimingham. You will often find you have the beach to yourself. And as the beach is part of the Deep History Coast, you may well find fossils and sea stones if you do a bit of beach combing. Please steer clear of the cliffs, do not dig into them and ensure you visit during low tide.
Titchwell: Titchwell is best known for its RSPB nature reserve with an abundance of birdlife living among its saltwater habitat and mosaic freshwater. However, if you take the 1km walk through the reserve, head across the marshes and reedbeds, you’ll be greeted with a lovely quiet beach with vast sands and dunes to explore. During the second world war, the beach was used as a firing range and you can see remnants of its past today. As you enter the beach from the path, you will see the ruins of a war bunked which are often home to starfish; you will also see the remains of pillboxes, and if you’re lucky, at low tide, you may see the remains of two Covenanter tanks. Blakeney Point: Famous for its seals and ground-nesting birds such as avocets and little terns, there are also quiet picnic and paddling spots around beautiful Blakeney Point. You can reach the point by a boat trip (to see the seals) with the option of stopping on the Point, or you can walk from Cley. The western end of the nature reserve
is not open to visitors, but you can find your own secret beach beside the channels and dunes elsewhere. Cart Gap: Not far from Sea Palling beach, which is popular with families in the summer, you will find Cart Gap beach. This is a lovely stretch of quiet beach with sandy dunes, ideal for playing and shelter. There is also a large car park, facilities and a small café nearby. Weybourne: Here you will find a quiet stretch of shingle beach to yourself and deep water for a close-to-shore swim. The beach is so secret, it was a favourite with smugglers centuries ago! Weybourne has long been considered a possible site for invasion, with one reason being the deep waters: “He who would all England win, should at Weybourne Hope begin.” You can reach the beach by following the coast path across the cliffs to the east of Weybourne beach before dropping down to the shingle beach. Here you will often find boats drawn up on the shingle. Always worth a visit are North Norfolk’s six Blue Flag beaches; no other district in the country has more Blue Flag beaches than North Norfolk! East and West Runton, Comer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham, have Blue Flag status meaning they are clean and safe and some of the finest parts of the coastline in the country. Which means North Norfolk is the natural choice when it comes to a day out at the beach. For more information about places to visit, see visitnorthnorfolk.com 29
TOP 10 wildlife spots on the Broads Find more info at www.visitnorfolk.co.uk
THE BROADS NATIONAL PARK is the largest wetland area in the UK and one of the most important in Europe, and it’s a haven for birds and all kinds of wildlife. Indeed, there are more rare species in the Broads than anywhere else in Britain. You can see grebes, herons, kingfishers, and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the rare bittern. You might also see the rare swallowtail butterfly, which is found nowhere else in the UK, and these days it’s not unusual to spot an otter poking its whiskered snout out of the water.
HORSEY Cranes overhead at Horsey Mere, and seals on the nearby beach, especially in winter when the Greys have their pups (Commons have their June-August).

NJOY WALKING in Norfolk
tramping through golden leaves and russet woodlands in the autumn, or take a brisk walk past crisp hedgerows in the crackling frosty winter. And spring and summer are spectacular with colourful wild flowers such as our famous Norfolk poppies and sun-washed sandy beaches. The county’s footpaths are wellmaintained and clearly-signed and there are lots of places to begin walking with plenty of pubs, tearooms, guest houses and campsites en route where you can stop for a well-deserved break. Throughout Norfolk there are many trails and routes which will challenge, delight and inspire you. Choose a route which suits your energy level and experience and takes you through the type of countryside you enjoy the most. The county’s main routes are listed below, but please also visit Norfolk Trails for more information and downloadable maps. There is also an interactive map to help you find the right walk for you.
ANGLES WAY
MARRIOTT’S WAY
Angles Way is a 93 mile walking trail following the county boundary of Norfolk and Suffolk, gently meandering from Great Yarmouth through to Thetford. After Breydon Water (near Great Yarmouth) Angles Way follows the Waveney Valley to the source of the River Waveney, passing through open countryside, broad river valleys, pretty villages and the ancient market towns of Beccles, Bungay, Harleston and Diss. The route then meets up with the Little Ouse at Knettishall Heath with a striking change in scenery as it winds through the heathland and woodland of the Suffolk Brecks before finishing in Thetford.
Marriott’s Way is a 26 mile footpath, bridleway and cycle route which follows the routes of two disused railway lines, running between the historic market town of Aylsham and the medieval city of Norwich. Countryside, wildlife, public art and a wealth of local history can be found along the way, whilst Marriott’s Way itself is a county wildlife site and passes through many interesting landscapes and wildliferich habitats, such as the Wensum river valley and Whitwell Common. Along Marriott’s Way you may see a variety of birds, animals and plants including kestrels, owls, hares, deer, butterflies, primroses, orchids and even otters and kingfishers. If you’re beginning your journey in Norwich, you will find the entrance to Marriott’s Way by the roundabout at Barn Road and Barker Street on the inner ring road. In Aylsham, you will find the entrance on Norwich Road, opposite the Bure Valley Railway station. Alternatively, there are many other access points at villages and road junctions.
BOUDICCA WAY Named after the legendary warrior and Queen of the Iceni whose tribes once inhabited the area, the Boudicca Way runs for approximately 36 miles between Norwich and Diss, roughly parallel with the old Roman ‘Pye’ Road. Boudicca Way passes through the rural, gently undulating countryside of south Norfolk and the Waveney Valley using public rights of way and quiet country roads, where visitors can find unusual wildlife and flora. Along the way, the trail passes picturesque villages such as Shotesham, Saxlingham Nethergate and Pulham Market. The area also has strong historical heritage, including Venta Icenorum, the Roman Town at Caistor St Edmund, which was the Roman administrative centre for the area.
NAR VALLEY WAY Nar Valley Way is a 33 mile long walking trail meandering through contrasting landscapes between the medieval town of King’s Lynn and the Farm and Workhouse museum in Gressenhall. The route follows quiet tracks and lanes, crossing farmland and passing through woods, meadows and commons. The River Nar is never far away, with long stretches of riverside path to enjoy. 33
Out&About
Find more info at www.visitnorfolk.co.uk
Open farmland around Mileham contrasts with the expansive lowland panoramas near King’s Lynn, and the intimate woodland glades found at West Acre and Narborough. Intriguing local heritage and historic remains are encountered regularly along the way, including Pentney Abbey, West Acre Priory, Castle Acre castle remains and Priory. Look out too for the fine variety of historic churches including the AngloSaxon round tower at East Lexham.
NORFOLK COAST PATH The Norfolk Coast Path runs for 84 miles (134km) from Hunstanton to Hopton-onSea, with the majority of this walking trail running through the dramatic landscape of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The most westerly point of the Norfolk Coast Path is the seaside town of Hunstanton. It then passes through areas rich in wildlife – first the salt marshes near Brancaster, then Holkham National Nature Reserve with its extensive sandy beaches and pine woodland underlining the vast open sky. Look out for massive flocks of geese in the winter, coming in to safely spend the night here. After Wells-next-the-Sea the Norfolk Coast Path skirts along the edge of salt marshes, with views of Blakeney Point, famous for its grey and common seals. Cley-next-the-Sea marks the start of the section that follows an extensive shingle beach and wildlife-rich freshwater marshes. The route continues along the shingle beach almost as far as Sheringham, where it follows the top of the sandy cliffs, heading inland and meandering through the wooded hills between Sheringham and Cromer, before returning to the coast to Hopton-onSea on the Norfolk-Suffolk border. This trail combines with the Peddars Way (which it joins at Holme-next-theSea) to form the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, one of 15 National Trails in England and Wales. 34
WEAVERS’ WAY
PASTON WAY Paston Way is a 22 mile walk between Cromer and North Walsham, discovering the area’s beautiful medieval churches. Each church has its own hidden history and one was even moved brick by brick from a cliff top to save it from the sea. To visit all 14 of the fine churches on the Paston Way, the trail covers 29.5 miles. In travelling church to church, the trail ambles down quiet lanes, through picturesque towns and villages, across vast arable fields, disused railway lines and quiet grazing pastures with views of the North Sea. Keep a look out for seals on the stretches of beach walk too. The Paston Way takes its name from the Paston family who during the Medieval and Tudor periods were the dominant and wealthy landowners in the area through which much of the trail passes. The Paston family in turn had taken their name from the small village of Paston on the north east Norfolk coast. They also wrote the famous Paston Letters.
Named after the once important weaving industry, which flourished in the Middle Ages around North Walsham, Weavers’ Way runs for 61 miles between Cromer and Great Yarmouth. Weavers’ Way offers a rich contrast of scenery, from the woodlands and mixed farmland of north Norfolk to the grazing marshes beside the rivers Thurne, Bure and Yare. Outstanding features include a number of flint churches, large country houses, windpumps, and historic railway infrastructure such as station buildings, bridges and crossing cottages. Some parts of the trail are available for cyclists and horse riders.
WENSUM WAY
PEDDARS WAY
The 12 mile Wensum Way passes through some beautiful central Norfolk landscape, much of it alongside or close to the river that gives the trail its name. The River Wensum, which takes its name from Old English word for ‘winding’, is a designated SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and a Special Area of Conservation. The Wensum Way links the Nar Valley Way at Gressenhall with the Marriott’s Way at Lenwade, passing through rural landscape between Gressenhall and Swanton Morley, then following the river valley, abundant with wildlife, through to Lenwade. Along the way, take in outstanding views, picturesque villages and historic sites.
Peddars Way follows a Roman road built along the line of an even older trackway. The name, Peddars Way, is said to be derived from the Latin ‘pedester’, which means ‘on foot’. The trail starts in the Brecks, a unique area of forest, heath and low river valleys, running north from Knettishall Heath in Suffolk, for 46 miles through changing countryside to the north Norfolk coast near Hunstanton. Combined with the Norfolk Coast Path, it forms the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, one of 15 National Trails in England and Wales. Much of the Peddars Way can be used by cyclists and there is a special route available to horseriders.
Wherryman’s Way is a meandering 37.5 mile walking trail, running between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Taking its name from the wherry, a large cargo-carrying barge whose black sails were a once common sight on these waters, Wherryman’s Way runs through the heart of the Broads, winding along the banks of the River Yare, through open marshes, reedbeds, grazing meadows and riverside villages. Whilst enjoying the unique Broads landscape and rich wildlife, look out for installations of stainless steel wherry sails, engraved timber benches, sculptures and information panels.

The English - Virgin Oak is the latest release from The English Whisky Co; it is from their small batch, single malt whisky range, with only 2689 bottles to go around the whole world, it’s well worth seeking out. Matured gently in casks laid down by The English Whisky Co. in Roudham, Norfolk, which is England’s oldest registered whisky distillery, and has been the producer of a number of The English’s award-winning whiskies and currently holds the unbeaten record for Best European whiskies, which is no mean feat if you look at the competition. The English – Virgin Oak has spent its entire life maturing in the most beautiful virgin oak caks made from american white oak. The resulting whisky borrows heavily from the casks that held it and delivers a rich and spicy malt that captures oak’s signature nods to vanilla, chocolate, toffee and spices and finishes with a warm, lingering heat. The English Whisky Co, having in 2018 secured numerous awards and earning a place in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, which has named the Norfolk distillery’s single-grain whisky “Parched” as Europe’s Best Single Cask Whisky, it is looking to build on this success with a series of exceptional releases in 2019. Andrew Nelstrop, Owner of The English Whisky Co., says “What started off as an experiment has turned out to be a winner. We are really thrilled with this single malt whisky. The whisky is rich and oily with hints of honey, toffee and chocolate; a taste of chocolate and cloves lingers on the palate. What is there not to like?” www.englishwhisky.co.uk 41

here are some
restaurants, bars and cafes that take on a whole new appeal when the weather is good enough for dining alfresco. Yes, they already do great food, but when they have an attractive outdoor area, they become the hottest tables in town. Maybe it’s down to the climate and the fact that we Brits are keen to make the most of any opportunity to dine alfresco as we know it may not happen again for some time thanks to our unpredictable weather. Whatever, it’s that time of year again, so we’ve selected some of the very best places to don your sunglasses while sipping a spritzer and savouring a salad. The New Inn

It’s also located next to a model boat pond, so you may be in luck and catch the local enthusiasts setting sail. Popular with walkers, you can sit and watch the world go by while enjoying some light meals through the day, or a cold beer or ice cream. We guess they also serve tea… www.theteahut.co.uk
The Unruly Pig
Want fine food with your film? That’s no problem at The Dining Rooms, a bit of a hidden gem tucked away at Cinema City in Norwich. This courtyard setting comes alive at night, with subdued lighting and a cool vibe. But don’t expect hot dogs and popcorn here – instead there’s an inventive menu for both lunch and dinner, like leek and almond crusted skate wing, or venison carpaccio. We’re sure there are lots of film puns we could make here, but we won’t. It’s simply a blockbuster.
We make no apology for once again highlighting The Unruly Pig – not for its eye-catching moniker but the accolades that it receives. Voted the best restaurant in Suffolk 2018/19, and recommened by the likes of The Sunday Times, Financial Times and Delicious magazine, it also won an award for the best front of house team. So if you haven’t been before, now is the time to try their take on Britalian cuisine, under the skilled hands of head chef Dave Wall. Make the most of the barbecue weather and host better social gatherings in the garden with our tips and tricks
Summer is here,
and that can mean only one thing – dining alfresco. While many of us will have been braving the chilly evenings with a decidedly British stiff upper lip (albeit a shivering one), the time is now right to enjoy the back-tobasics joys of dining outdoors. However, it’s essential to have the right equipment and facilities to make the most of the light nights. First up – furniture. While it’s possible to eat outdoors without furniture, the whimsy of a picnic blanket soon wears thin when you are over the age of 25 and joints creak at the very prospect. So whether you are cooking indoors or out, if you want to sit out in the sun, you’re going to need a level of comfort we have grown accustomed to. Plastic garden furniture has its benefits – it’s lightweight and usually easy to store and maintain with no painting required and a wipe-clean ability. That said, plastic furniture always has a sense of flimsy about it, and tables simply don’t have a reassuring stability. Better by far is wooden garden furniture which certainly costs more but has a quality about it that you can enjoy for years on end. Plus, with all of us being more aware of plastic use, it’s worth investing in a more ecological solution. Wooden furniture also sets off a garden – it just seems right. If space allows, we would also suggest going for non-folding furniture, if you have space for such a luxury. Anyone who has sat on a folding garden chair will understand why. And if you are a family of four, definitely invest for a table for at least six people. Yes, you may end up with chairs that are seldom used but when it comes top entertaining you will always need that extra capacity. Plus, a larger table is also handy when you are dining out and have a help-yourself

Food&Drink spread, typical of any self-respecting barbecue, rather than plated dining. Which brings us nicely to the star of any outdoor cooking action – the barbecue. And this is where things really get, ahem, heated. Doyens of the barbecue fall into two distinct camps – coals or gas. Gas obviously has its benefits. It is cleaner, quicker, and you have more control over cooking temperature, and can cook over a longer period (so long as you have gas of course). But there is a lot to be said for the traditional charcoal barbecue, even with its pitfalls. After all, that’s what the great British barbecue is all about, right? Let’s just consider the numerous things that can go wrong with charcoal. Firstly, it’s messy, from beginning to end. Secondly, you can end up waiting half an hour for the coals to get hot and them see them fizzle out before you’ve burnt a single burger. And thirdly, even if you do have a raging heat, it’s just that – it’s almost impossible to tame the burning power of a belligerent barbecue and you end up with charred food that’s sometimes
dangerously undercooked in the middle. But, for us, that’s what it’s all about. Cooking on a barbecue is all about the ancient art of cooking over fire. Heck, there are even Michelin starred restaurants that do just that. If a few sausages get cremated along
You’ll also want to think about lighting, and we strongly recommend solar-powered garden lights, for obvious reasons. Not only will they turn on automatically when required, but having these small spotlights really picks out features in the garden the way, then so be it. You simply can’t beat the flavour, and it’s well worth all of the hassles listed above. But regardless of your choice if fuel, again it’s important to buy a barbecue that’s fit for purpose. We suggest a large round barbecue with multiple cooking levels, enabling the master chef to strategically shift food around keep it piping hot, and manage cooking times. Also, if you have any family members or guests who have dietary needs, simply use a baking tray and sperate set of tongs to keep the regular meat away from fish and vegetarian or vegan options. Cooking done and table set, there are other details to consider. Most barbecues we
50
have been to tend to last long after the sun has started to go down, and as the embers start to die, it’s important to inject a little heat to keep friends and family warm. Many outdoor heaters have been entering the market in recent years and a popular choice is the chimenea. These outdoor fireplaces, often shaped like amphoras, are an atmospheric solution, and help to continue the fire theme. Simply strike up some firewood and back in the glow. You’ll also want to think about lighting, and we strongly recommend solar-powered garden lights, for obvious reasons. Not only will they turn on automatically when required, but having these small spotlights really picks out features in the garden and again add to the atmosphere nicely. It may also be worth investing in a couple of citronella candles to add more ambience and also keep the midges away. Follow these simple steps and you’ll soon be enjoying late nights in the garden, with food cooked and enjoyed with company well into the long summer nights.

Tell us a little about Katie and Matt? We are happy, focussed and driven always looking for a challenge and a holiday. Enjoying all that life has to offer driving the White Hart Hotel forwards.
What is your favourite tipple and what food would you pair with this? Cocktails or a really good Bordeaux, we have a lovely selection of red wines which I find hard to resist.
Do you have any food heroes? Desmond (Hall Farm Eggs), great local eggs just around the corner always with a friendly reliable service. We’ve dealt with Cleveleys Butchers in Suffolk for a number of years as they produce some of the finest meats.
If you were having guests round what would you impress them with? Simple, great tasting, local food, produced in and around Norfolk and the wider area. I’m a sucker for a Roast on a Sunday. Followed by a few pints at the pub.
What’s the best meal you have eaten, and where was this? The Crown Hotel at Wells-Next-TheSea. They have an amazing dish called The Black Slate which has a little bit of everything and I can never leave Wells without sneaking a Slate in. What are your favourite dishes at The White Hart and at home? We make a great burger, it is popular with the guests on a week night or weekend, or Slow Roasted Lamb Shank is a delicious dinner with a glass of Pinot Noir. We change our Menu monthly to incorporate the wonderful seasonal produce available to us so we can never get bored with what we are eating. We are introducing a new Healthy, whole foods, plant based selection to be included on our June menu.
What’s the best thing you enjoy about your job? All the different types of people you get to meet in a day. Also, we love a nice busy and fast paced evening. Christmas time is our favourite as everybody is in a festive party mood all month, so every shift is fun. How do you relax? We both enjoy exercise and regularly attend the gym but the main way we relax is walking our two dogs and seeing the world when we can. Run us through a typical day for you We like to start with an early morning gym session followed by a busy lunch shift. We try and squeeze in a dog walk around 3pm and then back to the Hotel for the evening trade. What is your proudest achievement? To date, this would have to be renovating and restoring the boutique bedrooms
at the white hart whilst also developing the plans to turn the Old Barn into more accommodation. My wife Katie designed all the interiors of the bedrooms and really enjoyed it so we are hoping to expand upon this with the Barn and future projects. I completed a half marathon once which I’d like to attempt again one day soon. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Attend the Gym, Spend time with our two little dogs, Marley & Rocky and more recently some indoor climbing. Can you sum up the White Hart in five words? Local, welcoming, boutique, country dining.

At what age did you first start to cook? My love for cooking came at a very young age, I used to visit my grandad every Wednesday after school, the day he used to cook beef stew. My grandad always used to call this ‘pea soup’ and I was none the wiser until I had a few years under my belt! We would have ‘pea soup’ with mash and veg from his garden, I would always help with the stirring, and of course Ready Steady Cook would be on the TV! But this was when my love for cooking really started. Where did you train? I trained at Lowestoft College one day a week and then spent the rest of my time divided between work and reading books. I feel this gave me the confidence under their tutelage to express myself and understand different ingredients and flavour combinations. I also had some great work experience placements, such as the House of Lords where I had never seen before, and which gave me the drive and belief I needed to succeed. I have also picked up a lot of cook books on my travels, which have given me the style I have as a chef. I like working with big flavours that guests can experience without being overwhelmed and put off. Who is your food hero? The one chef that I always come back to is Jamie Oliver. His passion and ‘have a go’ attitude was just amazing and something I fell in love with. The way he seemed to just throw things in a pan/pot and the most amazing dishes would appear like Paul Daniels in a kitchen. In recent years people like Tom Kerridge, Daniel Clifford, Sat Bains and of course Gordon Ramsay and Tom Brown at Cornerstone in London who was Nathan Outlaw’s young gun. What’s the best meal you have eaten – and where was this? One of my favourite meals was when I was trying to impress my soon-to-be wife Leanne and we ate at Alimentum in Cambridge, sadly now closed. This was her first taste of fine dining and was my way of introducing her into my world of cooking and what it means to me to be a chef. What are your favourite dishes for the restaurant and at home? My favourite dishes are of Thai/Asian influence as they are something I find my self-drawn to time and time again. It’s the spices that I love and the way they are like the equivalent of a British one pot wonder. We currently have an egg noodle, spice chilli
Ben Hegarty Head Chef at
The Crown Woodbridge
What is your favourite tipple and what food would you pair with this? My favourite tipple must be a good red, like Rioja Gran Cerdo, which pairs perfectly with lamb and even stands up to a bit of spice such as in the beautiful Indian inspired lamb burger we are featuring on our menu at the moment.
broth and sea bass dish on the menu at The Crown and it’s one of my favourites. What led you to the The Crown? As a chef I am always looking for my next chapter in life and after spending six years on the coast at our sister hotels within The Hotel Folk collection, I felt now was the time to take the reins at The Crown and focus on taking their food offer to the next level. With the confidence I’ve gained at the other properties, I really wanted to put my personal stamp on a restaurant within the group. What plans do you have for The Crown? In just four months since I’ve been at The Crown, we have re-branded, created a new concept and launched our new menus, which showcase beautiful, local ingredients brought to life in my own unique style, delivering exquisite flavours to every dish. Moving onto the next few months, I think the things to look out for are plant based dishes and healthy living. This is a market that just continues to grow and shows no sign of slowing down, and something we are keen to explore at The Crown along with strong flavours and great cooking. One of my favourite dishes at the moment is a simple little bar snack we have, golden scampi with wasabi mayonnaise, it just eats like a little piece of heaven and works together like pork and apple sauce or chilli and lime. You must come along and try it, you will not be disappointed!
What’s the best thing you enjoy about your job? The people and the friends you make. This year I am getting married to my wonderful fiancé, who also works within The Hotel Folk, and my best man is my former Head Chef, which just shows the people you meet in this industry. There are also some great chefs in our hotel group and we are fortunate in working with some of the best produce in the world found on our doorstep in Suffolk. Have you always wanted to be a Chef? Yes and no. I mean I always liked cooking but art was something I loved too and I always found myself drawing or cooking in my spare time. If I could have had any job it would have been a tattoo artist but then I realised I was much better at cooking than drawing, but I still use my art to help me when it comes to plating up a dish, that really brings out the artistic side of me. How do you relax? Now I’m older my interests have expanded to having day’s off with the wife-to-be, walks along the beach with our sausage dog, Mushroom, and hosting barbecues with friends and family in the summer. I have an avid interest in photography so capturing those moments is special. I’m also a big film lover, so cinema is always a treat as well. Easters OF NORWICH
Easters of Norwich is enjoying the fruits of its labour as it approaches 30 years in business. Jade Soanes caught up with owner Peter Easter
P eter Easter
is a modest man, but it’s certainly no accident that his Norwich-based fruit, vegetable and dairy wholesalers has grown into the successful business it is today. Opened in 1990 after almost 25 years in similar trades, Easters was born from a desire to offer something a little less ordinary. At the age of 18, Peter was running his own corner shop, Magpie Stores, when a stall on Norwich Market caught his eye: “I had always liked the fresh produce side of things. This stall had lots of really unusual fayre for the time – artichokes, courgettes, peppers – and it looked fantastic. That’s when I thought ‘I can do that’. That was the catalyst for it all.” It was with this can-do attitude that he soon found himself supplying several of Norwich’s restaurants with more exotic (certainly for the 80s) fruits and vegetables, and drawing in customers from across the county with his own vibrant shopfront display. Following several moves to accommodate the need for more space,
54
Easters has now been at its current site on Northumberland Street for ten years. From humble beginnings – and just two Bedford Rascal vans – the company now boasts a fleet of 16 and a dedicated workforce of 35 people – including Peter’s son, daughter and brother. Peter’s son, Will, decided to follow in his father’s footsteps soon after leaving school in 2006, starting at the company as a driver and progressing into operations director. His arrival ‘revolutionised’ the business, his dad says – not least because he introduced digital invoices. Prior to this, they were painstakingly calculated and handwritten by Peter for several hours each day. So what’s it like to work so closely with your family? “It’s fantastic,” says Peter. “I
get to see my son every day, and my daughter works with us a few days a week. I’m sure they would say I drive them mad sometimes, but we work really well together.” It’s this family-run, personable approach that Peter believes sets Easters apart from other suppliers. For him, good business is all about quality produce and customer service that truly goes above and beyond. Recently, he says, a customer who requested Norfolkgrown strawberries was delivered Dutch strawberries – bought to stop-gap the huge demand for locally grown ones – by mistake. The right strawberries were simply driven over and swapped later that day, no fuss. Similarly, he explains: “We often deliver to restaurants in Norwich in the morning, and later we might get a call saying they forgot to order this or that, and so we’ll do a second delivery for them the same day, whenever they need it. Nobody else can do that.” Aside from Easters’ drive to serve their customers well, the company has also thrived by keeping its fingers firmly on the pulse (or,
in this case, pulses). When asked by upscale seafood restaurant Loch Fyne if they supplied milk and cream, Peter once again thought: well, why not? Mere months later, they were delivering thousands of gallons of milk and ordering butter by the tonne. Ten years on, as well as a plethora of fruit, vegetables, cheeses and dairy products, the company now also offers a wide range of dried fruit, nuts, pulses, oils and vinegars. Undoubtedly, the steady rise of vegetarianism – 21% of the world’s population is now reportedly meat-free – coupled with an overall better public awareness of which foods are healthy, has only bolstered the company’s output. When I jokingly enquire whether there has been a rise in demand for avocados to fuel my generation’s apparent obsession with smashed avocado on toast, Peter says actually, yes there has been. He’s also seen a surge in the popularity of sweet potatoes, pomegranate seeds and curly kale in recent years. “It used to be that you’d only get asked for kale from rabbit owners, but in the past two or three years, orders for curly kale have exploded.”
There has also been a noticeable shift in interest towards locally-grown and sourced produce, most of which is driven by seasonal availability. This is in part due to a conscious effort by customers to reduce the carbon footprint of their food, but also thanks to a
Locally-grown products will be fresh from the field. At this time of year, we’re really flying with demand for local asparagus and strawberries. Soon it will be blueberries and blackberries – it’s literally changing every week. growing appreciation of what can be found on your own doorstep. Easters is committed to supplying local produce wherever possible, and Peter estimates that they usually stock 50-60 products from Norfolk and Suffolk as standard. “With imported produce, we have no real idea how long ago it was picked, whereas locally-grown products will be fresh from the field. At this time of year, we’re really flying with demand for local asparagus and strawberries. Soon it will be blueberries and blackberries – it’s literally changing every week.” The abundance of renowned locally-grown produce is why Peter says he has never even considered moving the business elsewhere – with specialist suppliers and makers of everything from peas to potatoes, carrots to cheese, there is much to feast on and savour here in East Anglia. After running Easters for nearly 30 years, you would be forgiven for thinking that Peter would be planning on slowing down soon. But the same work ethic that sees him grafting for 10-hours a day, six days a week means he has no solid plans to step away just yet. “I don’t know when I’ll hand it all over to Will, but it is a lovely business to hand over. I’ve got three grandchildren too, so maybe it will continue into the third generation.” Even if Peter isn’t looking too far ahead, it’s a future that looks bright. Easters’ customer base of over 200 is still growing – appropriately, mostly organically, through word of mouth and the occasional phone call. Not bad for a teenager who started with, as Peter says, “just this tiny little corner shop”.

5-A-DAY Start at breakfast Add a couple of handfuls of different fruits such as banana, apple, strawberries or blueberries to your morning porridge or muesli and voila, that’s two portions already in the bag.
Put it on toast If muesli isn’t your thing, top your toast with something more nutritious than jam by mashing up some banana or an avocado for a brunch that’s bang on trend.
Liven up your rice Popping some frozen peas and/or sweetcorn into your rice is a quick and easy way of getting another veg portion into your side dishes.
Beans, beans the magical fruit… The age-old song was onto something, as a portion of beans, chickpeas or lentils do in fact count towards one of your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
Try out vegetarian recipes One or two evening meals a week, opt for a vegetarian version – whether a lasagne, curry, stew, pie, stir-fry, salad or soup – as a way to experiment with different flavours and add more vegetables into your diet. 55

Cheese Soup
This month we are talking and making cheese soup, this was always one of my favourite recipes and at Benedicts it soon became a classic. But recently it has become the first (of hopefully many) recipes I have demonstrated on BBC1 Saturday Kitchen a real life goal for me as I have watched the show for years dreaming that one day I would be asked to go and cook! Last month I got the chance and loved every minute of it. Now back to this simple but full of flavour soup, you can adapt it to any cheese you like most and the garnishes can change with the seasons. So give it a try and let it become a family classic just like in my house.
Ingredients SERVES 4
• 14 Shallots • 200g Parmesan (Grated) • 70g Alpine Cheese (Grated) • 200g Double Cream
Try fruit lollies
Pureed fruit mixed with fruit juice or water make an excellent base for ice lollies – perfect for summertime snacks or desserts. 56
• 350g Chicken Stock / Vegetable Stock • 70g Salted Butter • Sea salt & White Pepper for seasoning
Method
In a sauce pan sweat down the shallots and butter with no colour. Once the shallots are sweated down add the two cheeses together on a low heat so it doesn’t burn, stir continually. Then add the double cream and stock gently bring to the boil and mix thoroughly to ensure it is all incorporated. Once
your soup has come to the boil, Pour into a blender and blend for a few minutes then pass through a sieve check for seasoning and serve hot.
Serve with...
Norfolk new season asparagus, wild garlic, crispy bacon and crispy shallots.

Sometimes with fussy eaters, sneaking in fruit and veg is the only way forward. Try adding beetroot into chocolate cake (sounds awful, tastes delicious) or blending vegetables into a pasta sauce.

Whats your beef? No really ask your self? Do you know your local butcher? How about the farmer? You’ve better been shopping at
your local farm shop. LOL. Thinking of the up coming summer who do you want to spend your hard earned cash with? We all have a family barbecue to attend or host this season. Provenance is what good food is all about, especially when its comes to beef. At the very forefront of Suffolk’s cattle farming community is the Thickitt family; Wendy, Jeremy, Richard and Charlette. The Thickitt’s have been raising traditional British beef breeds - Suffolk Red Poll, Belted Galloway, Aberdeen Angus, Shorthorn and Herefords, in Darsham since 2003. The cattle graze in their meadows by the river Minsmere and also on Darsham fen (Suffolk Wildlife Trust land). With over 40 years in the butchery profession Jeremy embodies the “field to fork” philosophy, personally rearing some of Suffolk’s finest slow reared beef and supplying the local community through their family run farm shop, Emmerdale Farm Shop & Butchery, and servicing the needs of Suffolk’s small holders and caterers with K. W. Clarke family butchers. If you have purchased beef though your local butcher there is a good
58
chance that it was through the efforts of Jeremy and family. I have just had a Wensleydales lamb back from the abattoir which is entirely facilitated by the team at K. W. Clarke (Thank you Dale). Now a good restaurant needs a good butcher, just as any busy house hold, and I personally can not speak highly enough about the service and the master butchery that I have received over the years. Trust me when I say us chefs can be quite challenging to say the least. This season I have chosen to showcase slow cooked short rib of Emmerdale farmed beef with rocket, parmesan & truffle. So tasty with our truffled parmesan chips.
• 3 clove of garlic • 5 thyme • 4 star anise • 1.5lt light stock • 10 Peppecorns • Maldon sea salt to taste
METHOD Trim the beef nicely, then season with sea salt and pepper. In a lightly oiled pan seal the ribs on all sides adding herbs for flavour. Then place the short ribs in a oven proof dish with all the ingredients. Bring this up to a slow simmer then cover and place in a moderately hot oven, about 180oc for approximately 3 hours, until the meat is fork tender. Allow the short ribs to cool in the braising liquor. Once cooled, remove from the cooking liquor, trim the short ribs as required and strain the braising liquor and reserve. Now very important to this dish is the reduction of the braising liquor. When the braising liquor is cold skim of any fat and reduce to a sticky sauce consistency. When ready to serve warm the short ribs in a moderately hot oven. When the meat is warmed through, glaze with the sauce and reserve for plating.

Martin Blackwell, Head of Operations, Norwich BID said, “We’re really excited to be launching PopUp Norwich in the city centre. PopUp Norwich is an agile space providing low cost and low risk opportunities for entrepreneurs to experiment, test the market and merchandise new products. Norwich BID is doing this to support start-ups, which can be given the opportunity to trial physical retail. We want to help create the new businesses for the future that will help the city remain a vibrant place.” “The project will offer spaces of varying size, which “pop-up” businesses will occupy at the same time; an ever-changing department store if you will. This means that there’ll always be something different to see. Alternatively, the whole space may be offered to a business or group for a limited time.” Anyone interested in renting a PopUp Norwich space can find out more by contacting Norwich BID 01603 559570, popupnorwich@norwichbid.co.uk 65

As we wrote this month’s column we became
reminiscent about last summer. Remember those long, endless days of sunshine and warmth? The heatwave made us feel like we lived in sunnier climes, dining alfresco, entertaining friends and generally embracing our gardens. Wasn’t it bliss? Now that thoughts turn to this summer we have our fingers crossed for at least a few weeks of sun, especially as there are so many beautiful outdoor living collections to buy from this season. From comfortable hammocks and garden chairs, to potted plants and enamel crockery, alfresco living has never looked so cool. This year sees the return of raffia both on furniture and accessories inspired by the outdoors, a nod to the 70s revival trend. Mix with colourful dining ware or opt for monochrome which will set off the natural greens of the garden. Talking of which plants are still huge this year, especially if potted in hanging pots, as these work outside on decking or a patio and can bring the outside into your home. It’s time to embrace the great outdoors inside and out!

Add a touch of luxury to your home by installing Electric curtain tracks. This month our resident interior design expert Julie Handforth – Doidge gives us some useful advice on how Electric Curtain Tracks are the perfect addition to fit in any high tech house.
ELECTRIC curtain tracks are the perfect solution to those hard-to-reach, large or heavy curtains. Giving you complete flexibility you can operate opening and closing your curtains via a switch, remote control, and you can now operate your electric curtains using an app from your smartphone, allowing you to open and close your curtains while you are away from home. This system applies not only to curtains but roller and roman blinds all of which we manufacture here at JHD Interiors. All motorisation tracks will create a comfortable and excellent living environment and at the same time keep your curtains perfectly aligned. The curtain systems have two important roles, Enhance design whilst managing the heat and light entering a room and not to mention the added feature of security while you are away from home with the ability to open and close them remotely from your smartphone. . Home automation is the latest interior design trend and electric curtain tracks are the perfect addition to fit into any high tech house. They can be activated by remote control or timer – perfect if you’ve got a home cinema projector and want to block out bright light, or you want the curtains shut when it gets dark to keep the house warm in winter.
Top tips for
INTERIOR DESIGN
The tracks are also great for offices, conference centres and meeting rooms to help control light levels. Our electric curtain rails consist of systems from Silent Gliss, the leading supplier of motorised curtains and blinds. With such a reputation for quality, you know you’ll have a great product that will last for years to come. At JHD we are proud to be one of only a handful of stockists in the region. The latest from Silent Gliss is “The Sound of Silence” A silent track setting the standard from curtain track specifications for architects, interior designers and high end users who aren’t prepared to compromise. Set your curtains to open and close at a time to suit your needs with the Silent Gliss 5100T. You can rely on the Autoglide system to operate your curtains at any time you desire, using the latest in remote technology. The timer function is excellent
for home security. The timer can be set to open and close the curtains without anyone needing to be home, which is ideal if you’re on holiday or out for the evening. From Green to GOLD From Green roots in Norfolk to Gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show!
BESPOKE Outdoor Spaces and
Lifestyle Centre (BOS) lies nestled amongst the green Waveney Valley in Wortwell and is run by Jody Lidgard. This year, by collaborating with a leading educational charity Montessori St Nicholas, Jody has brought home Gold, in his solo debut as a designer. Growing up in the urban landscape of Grimsby, Jody has always been attracted to lush landscapes. After a career in the armed forces Jody decided to pursue his passion for the natural world and returned to college to study Landscape and Horticulture for four years. During his time studying, Jody recognised the definite split between hard and soft landscaping and realised the opportunity of merging the two. Ultimately, this led him to found BOS - specialists in landscape design and construction through which he strives to share his passion and understanding of the horticultural industry. With over twenty years’ experience, Jody passionately believes in the importance of inspiring the next generation to be part of this amazing industry and as a qualified lecturer and trainer he encourages others to do the same. Jody has assisted medal winning gardens at Chelsea for 15 years. This unbridled passion and energy inspired Jody to bring home Gold this year by working together with Montessori on The Montessori Centenary Children’s Garden. The child friendly garden includes a wildlife dipping pond, edible living walls
a sunken greenhouse and multicolour cabin filled with activities for children. Commenting on the design, Jody said; “The design of the Montessori Garden celebrates the work of Montessori St Nicholas by being child led but future driven. We have showcased plants grown hydroponically, aeroponically, under artificial light and under glass in order to demonstrate the many methods of growing in small spaces that are accessible to children. This design offers an engaging space to nurture children, teach them about the natural world and allow them to explore horticulture in their own way.” This year, the Chelsea team of 70 from BOS has also managed the building of three other silver medal gardens. To achieve this requires outstanding organisational skills and logistical planning. With the Silver awarded IKEA Garden Jody teamed up with Garden Designer Tamara Bridge to produce “The Garden
that will save the world” designed by Tom Dixson. The garden featured plants selected for their medicinal, edible and useful properties all enclosed in a futuristic structure. The Harmonious Garden of Life which landed a Silver award this year was the brainchild of French designer Laurélie de la Salle. The garden is designed on the basis that beauty and luxury in a garden can also be sustainable. The Bespoke team helped bring Laurélie’s vision to life by constructing the garden and assisting with plant selection. The fourth garden this year to be completed by the team which brought home Silver Gilt is The Wedgewood Garden, designed by London based designer Jo Thompson. Jo’s signature planting style is given a twist this year, with plants that lend a wild look confined to more structured sunken garden surrounded by watercourses and channels. The BOS lifestyle centre will showcase some of the unique materials and finishes that can be used in everyday gardens. It is also Jody’s dream to use the site as a learning hub where companies can hold meetings in a peaceful environment, the public can meet for a cuppa or attend one of the many events that are planned for the future.

roses – with their fantastic array of shapes, colours and fragrances they really are a plant that should grace every garden, and as the weather warms the fragrance can fill the air. The various styles and growth habits of rose bushes mean that they are suited to any type of garden, big or small, in soil or in pots. With bush roses, climbing roses, standard roses, espalier roses and groundcovering roses available there is much to choose from, so which type suits your garden? Well, it’s important that they are placed in full sun with at least 6 hours of sunlight and that you regularly water the plant when it’s been dry for a while outdoors, particularly if it’s just been planted in the soil or is in a pot. They love a feed of fertiliser a couple of times a year – first in the spring then in mid-summer after the first flush of flowers this will ensure that they keep flowering profusely for a long time and remain healthy throughout the season and beyond. Special rose fertiliser is recommended (available here at Bawdeswell of course!) Follow feeding immediately with mulching, ideally with well-rotted stable manure. Alternatively, use well-rotted compost or chipped bark. Keep the mulch clear of the rose stems, leaving a 10cm (4in) gap between the mulch and stems When planted in soil most gardens, roses are generally very hardy. If planted in pots it’s best to provide some winter protection with jute or bubble wrap.
PLANTING ROSES Here are some steps to planting roses in the garden. Roses love well-rotted organic matter so apply this to the area where the roses are to be planted - farmyard manure is ideal for this. It’s also good to apply a general fertiliser over the surface of the planting area and fork it in to the same depth as the organic matter. The hole dug for each rose should roughly be twice the width of the plant’s roots and the depth of a THE BAWDESWELL spade’s blade. because, if this is not done, the roots may be very slow to extend outwards, leaving the young plant more susceptible to drought in summer. The graft union (i.e. where the cultivar joins the rootstock and the point from which the branches originate) is at soil level and not below. One tip - if you are replacing old roses with new roses, ensure that you dig out the old soil and exchange it with soil from a different part of the garden, as roses are at risk from replant disease, also known as soil sickness. Pruning is very important for roses - it helps them to grow well, produce many flowers and remain young and healthy. Prune back in the first winter after planting - the best time is late winter / early spring. It can also be done later but this will mean that the roses will bloom later. Avoid pruning earlier, however, as young shoots can then be damaged by night frosts and the plant is more prone to fungal infections such as blackspot and mildew. Pruning depends on the type of plant. Bush and standard roses should be cut back to 10 - 15cm above the soil or the trunk. For climbing roses, look particularly at the shape and height that the plant should grow to – this should dictate where and how you prune. Don’t be afraid to prune roses vigorously - the plants will always produce new shoots and will then flower profusely in the spring and summer. As for diseases and pests, well, there’s a few that roses can be susceptible to such as rose blackspot, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew and rose rust. Pests to watch out for include large rose sawfly, rose leaf-rolling sawfly and rose aphids. So, whether you’re searching for a plant for a flower bed, to grow against a wall or to plant in a pot, whether you want red, white, yellow or pink, there is a rose out there for everyone and, if well cared for, they will grace your garden for many years. At Bawdeswell we have multiple varieties in stock and, as always, we would be delighted to advise on the most suitable variety for your garden.

The fruit of a rose is called a rose hip. The berry-like hips of some species are extremely rich in vitamin C, because of this the it is sometimes made into jam, jelly, or brewed for tea. The hip also has minor medicinal uses and can be pressed or fi ltered to make rose hip syrup. Hip seed oil is also used in beauty products Historically the rose was of great importance to the
Romans & Egyptians.
Romans would use them as room decorations, or wear them on string around their neck and anything which was said “under the rose” was deemed to be a secret. Cleopatra was believed to have covered the floor of her palace room with roses before Mark Antony visited her.

For hundreds of years the rose has been widely recognized as a
symbol of love, sympathy or sorrow.
Rose is the most popular flower in the world followed by other flowers such as Chrysanthemums, Tulips, Lilies, Poinsettias and Narcissus.

are mentioned by name in the Bible and the rose is one of them.
Each colour of the rose
symbolises something:
Red rose is a symbol of love, yellow of friendship, orange of enthusiasm, white of purity, pink of joy, burgundy of beauty and violet of royalty.

Prostate
ENLARGEMENT Consultant Urologist, Mr Mark Rochester explains more Prostate enlargement is one of the most common diseases to affect men beyond middle age. Helen Harper of Spire Norwich Hospital catches up with Consultant Urologist, Mr Mark Rochester about a new surgical technique to ease symptoms.
T
he prostate is a walnut
sized gland located below the bladder and just in front of the rectum. Enlargement of the prostate gland affects virtually all men over 50 and the majority of men in their 60’s have urinary difficulties due to this enlargement as it compresses the urethra, the pipe which lets urine flow out of the bladder. Mr Mark Rochester, Consultant Urologist at Spire Norwich Hospital explains ‘The common symptoms of an enlarged prostate are increased frequency of urination during the day and at night, hesitancy (a delay in starting to pass urine), urgency, weak stream, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, intermittent stream and straining to pass urine.’ ‘The diagnosis of an enlarged prostate is made by assessment of the patient’s symptoms, rectal examination of the prostate gland, urine test, electronic measurement of urine flow called uroflowmetry and an ultrasound measurement of the post-void residual to assess bladder emptying. In some cases an endoscopic examination of the bladder, called a flexible cystoscopy, under local anaesthetic is required. In some select patients, bladder pressure and flow studies called uro-dynamic studies are useful.’ ‘Men with mild symptoms are managed with watchful waiting or careful observation and offered lifestyle advice such as avoiding excessive intake of caffeinated drinks. Patients suffering from moderate prostatic symptoms are treated with oral medication, many see a noticeable difference in their symptoms over 3-6 months, depending on the medication prescribed’. ‘Surgical treatment is usually indicated for those patients who have severe symptoms and who have symptoms that are inadequately controlled with medical therapy or who elect to receive more
definitive treatment. The range of surgical procedures has expanded recently and can include; ‘TUIP (Transurethral incision of prostate), can be carried out in patients who have a small prostate gland. TURP (Transurethral resection of prostate gland) was until recently the most widely used method of resecting prostate gland. This is carried out under general anaesthetic (meaning you’ll be asleep during the procedure) and requires an average stay in hospital of between 2-3 days. A newer procedure called holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is now available at Spire Norwich Hospital. This procedure allows tissue to be removed with less bleeding and shorter duration of catheterisation (usually just overnight). In most cases this can be performed as a day case (with no overnight stay) and has a lower re-treatment rate than traditional TURP (as low as 1.5% for HoLEP versus 10% for TURP). It is suitable for all men and all sizes of prostate, and in my experience (of over 800 procedures in Norwich) has an excellent impact on men’s quality of life. I have trained a number of surgeons in this technique and am passionate about the benefits of this approach over more traditional surgeries’. Most patients are also candidates for a novel procedure called prostatic urethral lift implant (UroLift) which holds the prostate open rather than removing tissue to improve symptoms. This has the advantage of being performed under sedation or local anaesthetic, with quick recovery and no need for a catheter to be fitted afterwards. A further new procedure where steam is used to reduce the prostate blockage called rezum is also available. With an increasing number of options for treatment it is important that men have a discussion of their individual circumstances with their urologist to find the treatment that is right for them. 87
Open removal of the prostate through an incision in the lower abdomen is only carried out in a very small minority of patients who have an extremely large prostate gland that cannot be treated by laser.’ Mr Mark Rochester concludes; ‘If you have symptoms related to bladder ageing, a urine infection or another cause for concern, it’s very important to discuss your symptoms with your GP. If your GP is concerned, you may be referred to a consultant urologist for further investigation. It’s always best to check rather than ignore symptoms, don’t take a ‘fingers crossed’ approach.’ • Benefits of HoLEP procedure: • Better relief of prostate obstruction, symptoms and urinary flow rate • Shorter hospital stay • Suitable for men with a prostate of any size • Suitable for men with bleeding disorders (i.e those taking blood thinning medication) • Longer term benefits and less likelihood of further surgery
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION about prostate gland problems arrange an appointment with your family doctor or call 01603 255614 to make a private appointment with Mr Mark Rochester. Dozens of different fostering needs,
a single shared aim
T
here are, literally, a hundred
and one different reasons why children need the understanding, patience, and stability of foster care. Each case is different because each child who requires care is different. They’re all individuals, so every single one of them is unique. From babies, toddlers and teenagers to brothers and sisters who need to stay together, asylum seeking children to children with special needs, or children who should be in foster care rather than residential placements. There’s no typical type of child who needs foster care, so there’s no typical type of foster carer required. We’re looking for a diverse range of individuals to join us. Parents, grandparents, childless couples, married, single, or those in same sex relationships are all welcome. You may have children who still live in the family home, or your children may have grown up and flown the nest. More important than who you are, or what you do, is how you can make a difference to a young child’s life, and it’s our role at Norfolk Fostering Service to help potential foster carers consider which type of young children they’re best equipped to care for and support. Some children will arrive having been abused or neglected or with drug or alcohol issues, others may have suffered extreme trauma, or have special needs. It is why we provide a tailored training programme together with advice from our Foster Care Ambassadors and round-the-clock support to give you the confidence, support, and skill set required to help these children.
Which role is right for you?
Where you fit in depends very much on your personality and individual circumstances. For example, there’s a perception that teenagers are more challenging to care for than younger children. But the reality is that you, personally, might be perfectlyequipped to guide teenagers through these tricky years, teaching them how to find their feet in an increasingly challenging world, and learn to trust again. Equally, your individual circumstances, together with your personality, may determine which type of fostering best suits you. So, you may prefer short term fostering, when children stay for up to a few weeks, or you may like to foster children for the remainder of their childhood. Perhaps you’re best suited to provide respite or emergency foster care, looking after children for short periods of time such as one weekend a month, to give the natural parents or their long-term foster carers a regular break.
What does the assessment involve?
Anyone who’s interested in becoming a foster carer first completes a register of interest form and is then visited at home by a social worker for an initial assessment. For those of you still keen to continue, the next step is a full assessment held over about four to six months and involving about eight visits from a social worker to discuss you, your family and your experiences of looking after children. Next, a detailed report is prepared and shared with the carer before going to a fostering panel for a recommendation.
89
Following approval, foster carers work closely with a social worker to identify children who will be a good match. Rest assured, support and training continue long after children are placed in foster care to ensure there are no issues moving forward. Although foster carers are paid an allowance, the real reward for most is knowing that you’re making a real difference to a child’s life. “I am a single carer and I look after two sisters. I look at these two little girls and I feel in awe. I look back at myself and think I could never be as brave as they are. I am so moved when I look at them. I can sit and feel what they have been through and wonder how can you cope with what life has given you? All I do is care for them, they wake up in the morning and all they want to do is smile at me and hug me.” TRACY, Norfolk County Council Foster Carer
Next steps…
If you’d like to make a positive difference to a child’s life, as well as your own, why not find out more about becoming a foster carer today. Simply call (01603) 306649 or visit the Norfolk Fostering Services Facebook page. We also hold regular information events in libraries across the county, so keep your eyes peeled for details of any near you.

If city life is a bit too much hustle and bustle for you, then try a break in the countryside,
F
ancy the kind of break that takes you into the heart of the rural countryside – peaceful, quiet, the ultimate “getting away from it all” holiday? Well, even in this day and age that is possible. You can do it in the Norfolk countryside, on a farm, no less; but you won’t be roughing it. AND, it gets even better. Rural peace is yours for the asking; but, 15 minutes’ drive away, is one of Britain’s finest cities, steeped in history, with great shopping and exceptional restaurants. All this can be found at Fielding Cottage, at Honingham, Norfolk. This is a venture of diversification by young farmer/entrepreneur Sam Steggles, who not only has his own farm at 36, but has developed the holiday accommodation alongside a successful goat cheese processing set-up and a goat skin care business. The goats cheese connection was (and pardon the mixed metaphor) the icing on the cake for me. I adore goat’s cheese; I love the smell, the texture and the unique taste. And, just to demonstrate that my taste is good, Sam’s cheeses can be found on the shelves at Waitrose, as well as local farmers’ markets. My wife and I enjoyed a short stay at The Nest, which sleeps two - one of the units in Fieldings Cottage (there are also two units that sleep

The Goat Shed is the on-site shop selling the cheese, goat’s milk, seasonable vegetables (including excellent asparagus) and basics like eggs, coffee, jams and honey, plus the award-winning Field Cottage skincare range. Should guests fancy some extra effort, then the gym, pool, sauna and steam room, tennis and squash courts at the nearby Barnham Broom Hotel, Spa and Golf Club, can be used as part of the stay. Norwich, The Fine City, is a mere 15 minutes’ drive along the nearby A47, and is really a “must” for Norfolk visitors. With Norwich City (The Canaries) having just been promoted back to the Premiership there is a real buzz around at the moment. There is so much to do: Visit the castle, built by order of William the Conqueror,

And, just like Liverpool, Norwich has “one to spare”, the Roman Catholic Cathedral which is also endowed with many wonderful items of gothic splendour. There are also museums, open spaces, and one of the best selection of restaurants to be found in any UK city – from Thai to Turkish! We, however, decided to drive the five minutes or so from the farm to eat at The Buck, in Honingham. This pub-restaurant combines the ambience of a village “local” with top-class dining using local produce and ingredients, served by a cheerful staff. Then back to our Nest for a very peaceful night’s sleep. Not even the goats disturbed us! The range of goat cheese produced by Sam Steggles

Getting a helping hand from a fellow player is all time well spent and, to be fair, if you intend to play properly, regularly and well into retirement, it’s probably best if you learn from the outset how to get the correct grip, stance and swing. You’ll probably enjoy the game much more too, as it can be frustrating at the best of times. So with those factors in mind, we have selected some of the region’s best courses and clubs to start playing golf, to improve your game, or to become a member. And remember, golf is for life, not just summer.
(handy for shorter days) and a putting green. There is also a pro shop for all your equipment needs, and a clubhouse. It costs just £19 for 18 holes at West Suffolk Golf Centre, or £23 on weekends and Bank Holidays.
Diss Golf Club Another great option for golfers of all abilities is Diss Golf Club on the Norfolk/ Suffolk border. The club was formed in 1903 and continues to move with the times.
Well-maintained The heathland course measures 6,202 yards and is a par 70. The club also has a new general manager in Steven Peet, who took up his new role at Diss in May after 11 years as Regional Manager for Golf England – where he worked with many clubs in the region. Part of Steven’s remit is to secure the future of the club by attracting and retaining new members, so now is the perfect time to join and take advantage of all the club has to offer.
West Suffolk Golf Centre Located in the fens, this pay-and-play course offers a great introduction to the game. Originally built as just three holes, more have been added over the years so it is now a full 18-hole course. The good news for beginners is that it’s a modest length of 5,487 yards in total (whereas championship courses often top 7,000 yards). The longest hole is a par 5 (so on average you should take 5 shots), and there are three short par 3s, the rest being comfortable yet challenging par 4s. The trickiest hole on the course is not the longest or shortest though, it’s the cheeky 4th hole, with dreaded water on the left that always strikes fear into golfers of all standards. There are also water features on other holes – you have been warned. The course is relatively flat, so it’s an easy stroll around. This family-run centre is a great place to learn as there are practice facilities and also a PGA Professional on hand, Joanne Bates, to provide lessons. Those practice facilities include a floodlit driving range

Life&Living One great option is a golf starter pack that includes tuition, an 8-week temporary membership, and reduced rates for juniors (and ‘youngsters’ under 40!) and concessions. Some of those memberships are also currently offering a 20% discount on the first year. Join this friendly club now and you’ll also have access to the club competitions, reciprocal reduced rates at other leading courses in the region, an active social calendar, and that all-important clubhouse and bar. Enjoy the sunny patio after a round, watch other golfers on the 4th and 18th holes and wonder why it ever took you so long to join the club. And who knows? You may turn out to be the next James Biggs – he joined the club aged 13 and recently won the prestigious Lagonda Trophy, joining the likes of Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
Barnham Broom Widely regarded as one of the finest clubs in Norfolk, Barnham Broom boasts not one but two courses. There are also great practice facilities, a grass driving range, three full-length academy holes (for anyone making the transition from the range to the main courses), and a short game area for honing your putting and pitching prowess. Naturally there is PGA Pro tuition and a well-stocked pro shop (the largest supplier of Under Armour gear in the region). Juniors are well looked after at Barnham Broom, with an active, growing membership and a coaching academy. The Valley Course has a wealth of water features, with the course itself designed by Frank Pennink. The par-72 course opened in 1977 and was soon playing host to European PGA Satellite Tour events, and also features in the Norfolk Open. 102
Slightly more forgiving is the par-71 Hill Course which opened in 1989 and offers wider fairways (handy for the errant driver) and the feel of a links course (including gusty winds and nasty bunkers). It’s not just a golf course at Barnham Broom, you can make a weekend of it by staying at The Edge Health & Fitness Club and luxury spa, dining in the awardwinning Brasserie or hanging out in the Sports Bar.
Royal West Norfolk Golf Club (Brancaster) Talking of links courses, the Royal West Norfolk is a serious test of skill and temperament, set between the North Sea and saltmarshes for a truly stunning setting. Founded in 1892, some of the original holes are still used to this day. And yes, it really is royal, with the Prince
of Wales (and future King Edward VII) becoming the club’s patron. Since then, four members of the Royal Family have captained the club. At 6,457 yards and par 71, it may not seem the toughest test on paper, but any golfer will tell you that size isn’t everything. As you can imagine, the course is exposed to windy conditions which can play havoc with any scorecard. Visitors are welcome, but numbers are limited and only two-balls are allowed (two players in a group, rather than the usual maximum of four), to keep up speed of play. There can be few more quirky or atmospheric courses in Britain. We particularly like the fact that the Clubhouse cannot be accessed by car during high tide, and that two holes on the course are also affected! And where else would you have to walk across a beach to reach the course from the clubhouse. We love it, and any accomplished golfer will too.
Royal Norwich Golf Club Here’s one to make a note of. Royal Norwich is doing something unusual in golf – it’s moving. Since forming in 1893, and achieving royal status thanks to George Duke of York, who went on to become King George V, the club also has HRH Prine Andrew as its current Patron. Now the aim is to transport that 125 years of history and heritage to a new site in Weston Longville. The vision is to create the region’s most prestigious golf facility and the redesigned and built course, by European Golf Design, is due to open this summer. The modern 18-hole course will be complemented by a 6-hole Academy Course to encourage new players and juniors, as well as state-of-theart practice facilities. The new clubhouse also promises excellent dining options and a true membership experience built on the social sport that is golf.

Intrepid adventurers can enjoy an allweather activity centre, a go-kart track, indoor pool parties, abseiling, or simply dining outside with new found friends in the alfresco eating area - or even choose to upgrade and join the surf school. Perfectly positioned on the North Norfolk coastline, the site is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on a stretch of coast designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The experience equips young people with skills for their future and broadens their horizons to the opportunities available to them. Founded more than 30 years ago, Kingswood has run over 1.2 million activity sessions each year, welcoming 165,000 youngsters to its centres (nine in the UK and one in France) from more than 35 countries. Activities include abseiling, climbing, zipwires, leap of faith, archery, buggy building, fencing, obstacle course, swimming, caving, orienteering, bushcraft, and problem solving. Evening activities include a campfire,

Manor Adventure, Norfolk Lakes Superbreak Adventure has become Manor Adventure’s most popular residential course. The course was established in 1991 to provide an introduction to outdoor pursuits and adventurous activities and has been continually improved over the years. The main purpose is to provide new challenging experiences to all kids under caring and skilful supervision. Norfolk Lakes Adventure Centre was acquired by the group in 2016 and has become their water sports and outdoor pursuits flagship. Norfolk Lakes is located on the edge of the village of Lyng, situated on the River Wensum, 11 miles north west of Norwich. As you would expect, water-based activities form the backbone of what is on offer here, with everything from canoeing to paddle boarding, dinghy sailing to water polo. On dry land, there is also the chance to try mountain biking, abseiling, climbing, orienteering, zip wires, obstacle courses, nature trails, team games, and scavenger skills – among many more. The accommodation is impressive, and courses run either Monday to Friday or Friday to Sunday. www.manoradventure.com

PGL Bawdsey Manor The stunning Bawdsey Manor is a Grade II* listed private site, sitting in 144 acres of sprawling parkland and woodland and facing directly onto the beautiful Suffolk coastline, at the mouth of the River Deben. Steeped in history, the main house that is said to resemble the Queen’s residence at Sandringham. Until it was purchased by PGL, Bawdsey was a renowned international school as well as a family home and has many excellent existing facilities as a result, including a sailing school and boatyard, tennis courts, dining room, classrooms and accommodation. The centre opened fully just last year after adding to all the existing facilities and investing in improvements. A new dining room, the creation of ensuite bedrooms and construction of many additional new PGL activity bases in the grounds have all transformed it into one of PGL’s most exciting adventure centres. The majority of rooms have 4-6 beds to a room, and a small number of rooms have 8-10 beds. Purpose-built activity bases include giant swings, a Jacob’s ladder, trapeze and climb towers. For 2019 they have also extended the ‘River Jordan’ area to offer raft building on site. The historic clock tower buildings have been converted into a buffet-style dining room, creating a new space to relax in and enjoy meal times, just a short walk from the main accommodation blocks. Holidays range from 7 nights (Saturday to Saturday) down to 2 nights (Tuesday to Thursday), and with an incredible array of activities to choose from, it will be an incredible experience for sure. A nice touch is that they also offer ‘First Timer’ holidays so you know everyone will be in the same boat when it comes to getting to know what a PGL holiday is all about, and those session are available for both 7-10 and 10-13 year olds at Bawdsey Manor. www.pgl.co.uk

Despite warnings from all sides of the pensions industry, fraudsters are still managing to separate people from their pension savings. Carl Lamb, Managing Director of Almary Green explains why we must all take care.
SUCCESS of
PENSION Scammers
Carl Lamb
Managing Director and Chartered Financial Planner
www.smith-pinching.co.uk
PENSION FRAUD is happening throughout the country, with criminals posing as experts to persuade people with pension savings to move their money. A recent study has shown that the prime targets are those aged 50 and above with around one in ten people in that age group reporting that they believe they have been approached by pension scammers. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) reported in January that scammers stole an average of £91,000 per victim in 2018. So how do you spot a pension scammer? I’m afraid the old adage holds true: if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. If you are approached by someone who says that they can deliver abnormally high returns on your pension savings, then it is highly likely that there is fraud involved. One of the key indicators that something is wrong can be the pressure put on you to act quickly: never let yourself be bullied into an instant decision. Cold calling people to persuade them to do something with their pension savings is now illegal – so if someone calls you, then they are already in the wrong and my best advice is to hang up immediately. Scammers also approach their victims by email, by post or even in person. Remember: it is so easy in this electronic age to pretend to be someone else so even if the communication looks like the real thing, if the approach is unsolicited you should be wary. Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated and will sometimes pretend to be from your existing pension provider, your bank, HM Revenue & Customs or other
Government departments. Other ploys may include the suggestion to move your savings out of an approved UK pension scheme into something else such as an overseas
Withdrawals from your pension savings after age 55 are counted as income for tax purposes once you have taken the first 25 per cent that is exempt from tax. If you agree to move your entire pot to another investment that is not a proper pension scheme – even if it is a real scheme and not a fiction – then you are likely to face a huge tax bill. scheme. It’s important to remember that under UK pensions legislation you cannot access your pension savings until you reach the minimum retirement age – currently age 55 –

and that if you do so, you will face a tax charge. In addition, withdrawals from your pension savings after age 55 are counted as income for tax purposes once you have taken the first 25 per cent that is exempt from tax. If you agree to move your entire pot to another investment that is not a proper pension scheme – even if it is a real scheme and not a fiction – then you are likely to face a huge tax bill. It is nonetheless perfectly possible to move your pension savings from one pension provider to another to get better returns, as long as the money is moved using a proper pension transfer and stays in an approved pension wrapper. However, transferring pensions is a serious subject and it is critical to get advice about a potential transfer to make sure that you don’t lose valuable benefits such as guaranteed income or beneficial death benefits. Talk to an independent financial adviser who is registered with the FCA before acting: he or she will make sure that your pension savings are in the right place for your specific circumstances. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and not advice. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

Social Scene Beccles Lions 50th Charter Anniversary Dinner Saturday 11 May
Photos: MALCOLM HIRST
TO CELEBRATE the 50th Charter Anniversary, Beccles Lions Club organised a Celebration Dinner at the Waveney House Hotel. Over 100 people attended this memorable event - including the Mayor of Beccles - Councillor Elfrede BrambleyCrawshaw, Peter Aldous MP (who is one of the members) plus representatives from 13 other East Anglian Lions Clubs and a large number of our friends from Beccles and District. The annual Ivan Holmes Community Award, presented by Mrs Mandy Holmes in memory of the late Past President Lion Ivan, was awarded this year to Mrs Joyce Wilson for her work at The May Centre. The most surprised person of the evening was Lion Keith Moore who was similarly honoured with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Keith became a Lion some 30 years ago and was active and indeed President of the Lowestoft Lions Club before moving to Beccles where he has served in the same position. The large contingent who had joined us from the Lowestoft Club were as delighted at this award as the Beccles Lions.
