Welcome

THE CLOCKS have gone back and the dark evenings are upon us. It’s time to pack away the summer wardrobe and get ready for the winter months ahead. But fear not, it’s not all about the gloomy cold weather setting in. Here at Places&Faces we think that November is a great time to dress up and look glamorous, and ease yourselves into the party season. A classic black dress teamed with a timeless set of pearls is a sure-fire winner at events and nights out to lift the winter blues. To complete the look of elegance you need a drink to match. This is why we have four of the finest champagne cocktails around. Two of our personal favourites are the ‘Classic’ and the ‘French 75’. Learn how to make these and others on page 63, and impress your friends at your next dinner party. We all lead very busy lives these days, hectic schedules mean we must ensure we take the time to look after ourselves physically and mentally. Our friends at visitnorfolk.com have rounded up some of the best practices for well-being in Norfolk on page 29. Add to this all of our usual features such as gourmet gossip, fashion, fantastic recipes, what’s on and a feature on how to drink local, we are certain that you will have so much to read and do you will forget that the colder months are even here.

Death of a

ast seen in London only

four years ago, in an RSC transfer starring Anthony Sher and Harriet Walter. The production was serviceable, the accents were poor (I didn’t appreciate seeing Willy Loman played with a Yosemite Sam voice, call me old-fashioned) and the overall experience was forgettable. I thought to myself that although the play is probably the most famous of Arthur Miller’s big four, it didn’t move or enthrall me in the way that A View from the Bridge, The Crucible and All My Sons do. Then Marianne Elliott decided to direct it. This production – first staged at the Young Vic, where I saw it, and just transferred to the Piccadily Theatre – is a complete revelation. Exactly as Elliott did with Stephen Sondheim’s Company a year ago, the brilliant original is neither bent out of shape nor ‘modernised’ or given a gimmick. Rather, it is seen through a different lens: the AfricanAmerican experience. Miller’s story of the demise of Willy Loman’s career and, in turn, his family life is one that speaks for all generations. “Attention must be paid to such a person”, says his loyal but clear-eyed wife Linda in the play’s most famous line. But that “person” is not the man he wishes he was. Willy Loman is a salesman of moderate success – liked but not adored, competent but expendable, decent but flawed. An affair he had years earlier undid his son Biff’s respect for him and, in turn, dissolved the glue that could hold the family together when times got hard. The play flashes back and forth in time, a device achieved particularly well here as if to suggest that Willy himself is haunted by his varied past as much as his stormy present and uncertain future. This haunting leads to the play’s inevitable tragedy. Wendell Pierce, most famous for The Wire but also a Broadway star, gives Loman a warmth, dignity and underpinning sadness which the previous Lomans I’ve seen (Alun Armstrong, Brian Dennehy,

Anthony Sher) didn’t achieve. He is proud and frustrated but with a sense that both come from an awareness of his fall from grace rather than an aggression towards those who contribute to it. He talks like a winner but he knows he’s losing. Sharon D Clarke, the recent Olivierwinner for her dazzling performance in Caroline or Change (which she reprises on Broadway following her run as Linda) is his rock but at an increasing personal effort. Clarke contributes her famous singing voice to the many bluesy hymns which the production wraps around the play, all beautifully composed by Femi Temowo. What dazzles most about Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell’s production, though, is how comprehensive is its re-evaluation of the play’s central family dynamic. Just like Company, it does not fundamentally change what the author wrote; it gives an additional dimension to it that feels so rich and natural that one marvels that it has not been done before in a major production. Sparely designed by Anna Fleischle and precisely lit by Aideen Malone, it has the misty fragmentary feel of the memory play while also allowing the fluidity and visual

interest which Miller plays can sometimes lack. Death of a salesman is long and gently paced, bigger on character exploration than on dramatic action. As presented here, one immerses oneself in these characters’ intersecting lives and tragedies and leaves the theatre moved by the experience of spending an evening with them. Death of a Salesman - like Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross or Williams’ Glass Menagerie - is a play that can always be reliably expected to be revived once every ten years. There’ll be other Willy Lomans and other interesting responses to this ever popular classic. But it’s hard to imagine ever seeing a fresher, more moving or revelatory rendering of it than this. Elliott and Cromwell’s achievement is to remain completely faithful to the spirit, tone and intention of what Miller wrote while simultaneously adding a style and perspective which are completely their own. For that, and for its many other pleasures, attention must be paid. Death of a Salesman runs until January 4th at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End.

Upper St Giles Stay a while in

With its mix of Georgian buildings and independent shop fronts, make a date with Upper St Giles this month says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich

U

pper St Giles, for

those not in the know, is one of Norwich’s hidden gems. A quaint little street, with small canopied shop fronts and painted window frames in racing green, crimson, French grey and cobalt blue,it’s reminiscent of Maida Vale in London albeit on a smaller scale. Situated at the west tip of the Norwich Lanes, head up St Giles Street from the city centre and keep walking. It’s literally five minutes from Norwich Market. As you round the corner at the top of St Giles Street on your right, you’re greeted by St Giles Church, one of Norwich’s 31 medieval churches. If you’re a photographer or Instagram addict this street should be on your hit

list. In all seasons this attractive street is picture perfect. Through driving rain run into the welcoming Scandi-inspired café, Bread Source, for great coffee and fresh handmade cinnamon buns. At Christmas see fancy front doors dressed in holly wreathes, and steamed-up windows decorated with fairy lights. In spring blooming wisteria winds its way along the ancient church wall. And in summer check out The Plant Den, where the leafy stock spills onto the path outside. The best way to enjoy Upper St Giles is to wander with no agenda, just popping into places as you find them. If you love simple fashion designs made from fine linens and cotton, then Mora is for you. For jewellery, knitwear, prints, gorgeous

objects and art visit Verandah, a collective of eight designers and printmakers based in Norwich & Holt (North Norfolk). It’s the kind of place you can’t leave without buying something, and a great shop for presents. Carol Lake Studio is a beautiful design studio and shop specialising in rich botanical designs in rich colours. This is a shop if you want something very special, elegant and unique. Choose luxurious silk pyjamas and matching dressing gowns, cushions and shoes, ties and pocket squares and fragrant French candles, stationary, wallpaper and prints. These are Carol’s designs. She also takes bespoke orders. Other independent retailers include: Fabulous Frames; Stiffkey Bathrooms for vintage baths, sinks and more; Cup Cakes & Co and Norwich Art Shop. Art lovers will be thrilled at finding Norwich Studio Art Gallery. Housed in a 17th century former butchers’ shop, this gallery has been around for 20 years. Specialising in modern and contemporary fine art it has a focus on Eastern European arts and crafts too. It’s open by appointment. Caroline Fisher Projects at 93a is an exhibition space which also hosts a ‘Clay Conversation’ on the first Friday of the month, at 11am during exhibitions. Opened by Dr Caroline Fisher, Caroline originally trained as a doctor at Cambridge then changed careers and studied Fine Art and then Museum Studies at the University of East Anglia. The gallery specialises in ceramics and is open Friday and Saturday afternoons, 1pm to 5pm. Eateries are aplenty. Les Garrigues is a café, deli, cheese and wine bar. Informal and cosy you’d be very happy ensconced

here on your own with a good book or with company. The wine choice is excellent, the cheese boards delicious (presented with cured meats you make your way around the board in order as described by your server). Families are welcome with a large table to fit everyone in. It’s bonhomie at its very best. Roger Hickman’s Restaurant is relaxed fine dining, with a 3 AA Rossette. It’s a clever lunch option. Their set menu costs £21 for two courses and £26 for three, and presents dishes such as crispy cod cheeks, parmesan risotto with langoustine foam as a starter with pork belly, roast celeriac, parsley, baked apple, fondant potato, bacon and barbeque sauce for a main. There’s also a 6-course Taster Menu at £41 or £71 including wine flight. Evening menus

The restaurant also opened a private dining room with its own kitchen and entrance this year. It’s perfect for romantic dinners and intimate celebrations. If you love what you find in Upper St Giles, this is just a taster of what the rest of The Norwich Lanes have to offer. Best practices to well-being in

Norfolk www.visitnorfolk.co.uk

Y

ou live a busy life

with a hectic schedule. You’re tired all the time and stressed. If you tick those two boxes, then you need to spend time in Norfolk. Come and recharge your batteries, find some balance and calm, where there are no distractions, and rediscover a state of being comfortable, healthy and happy in stunning surroundings. Anyone can take steps to improve their well-being and it doesn’t have to cost anything. Here’s our top tips for places to go and things to do for well-being and mindfulness when you visit Norfolk. This is the place to be aware of living in the present moment.

Take time to enjoy a sunset What better way to find peace than sitting by the sea and watching the sun sink down to the horizon? Hunstanton is the only west-facing seaside resort on the east coast so they’re particularly spectacular there. Or enjoy the added drama of the Victorian pier at Cromer, which has the world’s last end-of-pier theatre.

Be at one with nature Visit Thetford Forest but don’t just stay at High Lodge and enjoy the facilities. Take a walk on the quiet routes, or the Pingo Trail, and commune with nature. Listen to the birds in the trees. Be very still and you might be lucky enough to come across wild deer. Or hire a bike and pedal gently through the huge woodland on waymarked trails.

Take a good walk Norfolk has hundreds of miles of short and long distance trails, many of them circular. Pick a stretch of the Norfolk Coast Path to walk. It’s popular to get the coastal hopper bus to return to where you started. Inland, you could try Peddar’s Way, which follows the old Roman route up to the coast in the west of the county. Alternatively, walk through the tranquil and gently rolling countryside of south Norfolk on the Boudicca Way, which takes in the old Roman town of Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund outside Norwich. Weavers’ Way, between Great Yarmouth and North Walsham, takes you through stunning Broadland scenery. If you’re feeling a little more energetic, you could even try a little jog.

Discover calmness in church You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the calming solemnity of Norfolk’s churches. They provide a wonderful opportunity to sit quietly in peaceful surroundings. Norfolk has a wealth of medieval wool towns, built by pious landowners made rich by the wool trade who wanted to show their devotion. In the middle of the vibrant city of Norwich you could find calm

in the magnificent setting of the Norman Cathedral.

Be in a cultivated green space There are wonderful gardens to enjoy across Norfolk – things of beauty and great places for mindfulness meditation. East Ruston Old Vicarage has one of the most celebrated privately-owned gardens in Norfolk. Houghton Hall’s five acre walled garden with its contemporary sculptures is a thing of beauty. If you want time for quiet meditation whilst picking up some growing tips, then head to Felbrigg’s Walled Garden, or another National Trust property at Oxburgh Hall, and a third, Blickling Hall and Estate offers care-free walks in landscaped gardens and woodland. Look out for Norfolk’s only pyramid!

A view to savour If you’d like to see what man and nature can achieve together, then head to Sheringham Park, 1000 acres of natural beauty with landscaping by Humphry Repton. From the gazebo and look-out you can contemplate the stunning views along the coast.

Relax by the water We all know the meditative benefits of being by water, so what could be better than being in the Norfolk Broads – 125 miles of navigable, lock-free waterways. Hire a boat and float gently along… Sit by the water at somewhere like Fairhaven Water and Woodland Garden or hire a cycle for a slow pedal by the water. 29

Wild Days Out www.visitnorfolk.co.uk

NORFOLK has fantastic visitor attractions and entertainment, but it’s also a great place to discover the great outdoors. We’ve come up with our favourite free Wild Days Out and what to see while you’re there… Hickling Broad The largest of all the Broads, Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Hickling Broad is a haven for wildlife all year round. Spend the day on the walking trails with bird hides or, in summer, while away a few hours on one of the NWT’s Boat Trails. Get your bearings in the visitor centre. On the Upper Thurne river system, the broad has a significant number of common crane, as well as breeding bitterns, marsh harrier, bearded tit, Cetti’s warbler and, in winter, a large number of marsh harriers. Look out for Chinese water deer, red deer and difficult-to-see otters, plus two icons of Norfolk wildlife – the swallowtail butterfly and Norfolk hawker dragonfly. Thetford Forest The largest low-lying pine forest in the country, and only planted after the first world war, Thetford Forest has its own micro-climate with low rainfall and warm days… which makes it a haven for wildlife. Look out for red deer, roe deer, fallow deer and Muntjac as well as badgers, foxes and dormouse. Birdlife includes pheasants, crossbills, woodlarks, nightjars and sparrowhawk. You can also go on the Pingo Trail, which are small Ice Age lakes and unique to this area, go down a Neolithic flint mine or just get off the beaten track on foot or two wheels. West Runton The coastline between Sheringham and Cromer, and in particular at West Runton, are unique on the East Anglian coast in that it is made up chalk and flint rather than sand – perfect for rockpools. At the foot of the towering cliffs, twice a day the tide exposes fantastic wildlife retreats. Closer to the cliffs you might find serrated wrack, edible winkle, common prawn and shored crab, but at a really low tide, further out, you might discover black squat lobsters, velvet swimming crabs,

common hermit crabs and long-spined sea scorpions. How exciting does that sound! Just as exciting is that you’re standing where the world’s largest and bestpreserved mammoth skeleton was found, back in 1990. 85% of the skeleton was discovered – the remainder being eaten by hyenas (there are teeth marks on the bones and fossilised hyena poo, dissected, was found to have mammoth bone in it… yuk!). If you know what to look for you might even find a mammoth tooth on the foreshore. Or you could look for hyena poo. Whatever takes your fancy. Just offshore is the world’s longest chalk reef, where our fabulously tasty Cromer crab and lobsters feed. Horsey This day out takes in the Broads and the beach. Spend half the day trekking over the sand dunes to see the seal colony (please don’t disturb them and leave your dogs behind) and then head to the National Trust’s Horsey Windpump, which stands sentinel over Horsey Mere and the surrounding Broads landscape. You can climb to the top for a great view but there is a charge for that. There’s a tea room here for refreshments. On waymarked trails, look out for the swallowtail butterfly, bitterns, kingfishers and cranes and, in winter, migrating wildfowl. There are also boat trips on to the Mere to see more wildlife. Blakeney Point As well as the largest seal colony in the country, the National Trust-managed Blakeney Point hosts Norfolk’s largest gathering of Sandwich tern in the summer, before they head south to spend the winter in west Africa. There are also common and little terns. Also look out for blackheaded gulls, which protect the terns from predators like foxes, ringed plovers, oystercatchers and common redshanks. The pastures contain northern lapwings, sedge and reed warblers and bearded tits. Take a walk from Cley along Blakeney Point’s four-mile shingle spit to the sand dunes near the Lifeboat House.

See if you can spot samphire, otherwise known as ‘sea asparagus’. It’s a local delicacy. Please give any fenced areas a wide berth to protect nesting birds and don’t forget to bring your binoculars. Cley Marshes The first reserve set up by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Cley Marshes has a range of habitats, including saline lagoons, grazing marsh, reedbed and shingle beach, which attract huge numbers of wintering and migrating wildlife and waders. Plus, look out for bittern, bearded tits and marsh harriers. Visit the environmentally-friendly visitor centre which has an observation area and interactive interpretation. Look out for regular fun education activities to learn more. Holkham Okay, you’ll have to pay for the car parking, but after that you’ve got the run of the huge Holkham National Nature Reserve – and what a place it is! Orientate yourself at the new Lookout education centre and then you’re ready to go wild. On the grazing marshes you might see lapwing, little tern and spoonbill, in and amongst the nonchalant cattle. Then it’s time to head into the huge pine forest, which has waymarked trails and interpretation posts. Then you’re on to the beach that’s been voted the best in Britain by readers of the BBC Countryfile magazine. Try to arrive as the tide is going out and you will enjoy not just a huge expanse of sand but warm shallow pools that are perfect for swimming in and splashing around. Barton Broad The second largest of the Norfolk Broads, Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Barton Broad and the surrounding fens have an impressive array of species, including common terns, herons, kingfishers and otters. The wheelchair-friendly boardwalk takes you on a journey of discovery, through swampy wildlife-filled alder carr woodland.

The newly-extended show will deliver 16 performances in 11 venues across Suffolk and, for the first time, into Norfolk. Set in Lowestoft’s lost fishing village, known as The Grit, the entertaining, tender and surprising show brings to life heroes and heroines from the heyday of East Anglia’s herring fishing industry. Pearls from The Grit mixes stories and poems, songs and film, and last autumn’s pilot performances drew ecstatic responses from audiences and reviewers alike. An Arts Council England National Lottery grant is enabling the show to reach new communities and venues in November 2019. Using the words of his great friend Jack Rose as a guide, Dean Parkin travels back in time. Audiences will meet no-nonsense fisherman, Ned; Billy, a larger-than-life skipper; Jessie (Billy’s Scottish wife); and Ruby (Billy’s daughter) – two of the tireless taskforce of women keeping the fishing industry afloat. Pearls from The Grit is directed by Alys Kihl (Wonderful Beast) and produced by Naomi Jaffa (Poetry People). Narrated by Dean Parkin, the professional cast comprises Sally-Ann Burnett (Jessie and Ruby), Tim 34

FitzHigham (Billy and The Host) and David Redgrave (Ned and Happy Welham). Original songs (lyrics by Dean Parkin) and incidental music are composed by pianist Maurice Horhut who provides live music throughout the show in the role of ‘Tickler’ Sam. Dean says: “The Grit is a really special subject, close to my heart. It’s marvellous to bring Gritsters to life in their own words, and to hear the authentic local accent on stage captivating audiences. I’m thrilled to have had the chance to develop the show and to work again with the brilliant original team. I can’t wait to share our tales of resilience and humour around the East Anglian coast where so many fishing communities once thrived.” The 70-minute show opens on Saturday 2 November at the Suffolk Herring Festival at The Cut in Halesworth, followed by the Two Sisters Arts Centre (Felixstowe), Jubilee Hall (Aldeburgh), Marina Theatre (Lowestoft), Westacre Theatre, Beccles Public Hall, St George’s Guildhall (Kings Lynn), Seagull Theatre (Pakefield), Wells Maltings (WellsNext-The-Sea), St George’s Theatre (Great Yarmouth), closing at Southwold Arts Centre. Miniature Elephants 38

ELEPHANT GIN combine a great passion for gin with a love for African wildlife, producing a premium gin range made with carefully selected ingredients that capture the spirit of Africa. The sampling gift set supports the important work of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and their elephant orphanage near Nairobi. 15% of profits from the miniature bottles are contributed to the trust, who nurture baby elephants who have been found in the wild – often left behind when their mother dies due to poaching or other human intervention. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is known as the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. Each baby elephant has the support of a dedicated team to nurse them back to strength and to rear them in such a way that they can return to the wild when grown. All of Elephant Gin’s products are handcrafted; produced in small-batches using the

traditional method of copper still distillation in an Arnold Holstein still. The mini tasting set offers an ideal introduction to the brand’s three core gin styles: classic London Dry, the more punchy Navy Strength and a warming Sloe – an excellent discovery set for gin lovers new to the brand. Find the sets on the Elephant Gin website and via Harrods, Selfridges, Fine Wine and Fenwick’s stores. The launch adds to Elephant Gin’s existing collection of elegant bifting boxes (RRP £32.90-£38.90) illustrating the story of a special elephant whose name is on the bottle’s label. The journey of each particular elephant is highlighted in a booklet alongside a stirring photograph. The consumer will learn all about “their” elephant, its luck or fortune, and the reason for why Elephant Gin decided to name a batch after it. www.elephant-gin.com

Traceably tasty

TRULY TRACEABLE is a husband and wife team who produce award winning artisan venison and game pies, and sausage rolls. As the name implies, the fillings for their pies and sausage rolls are fully traceable. They can guarantee this on the grounds that all the venison and game is shot by Steve, who is as fully qualified as is possible in deer management. He is also a fully qualified butcher. All the deer which have been shot are individually inspected and recorded. These cull details are used to identify which animals go into each product on batch records every time pies and sausage rolls are hand made. This allows full traceability including the date, time, place of cull and the species of deer. With a multitude of awards, including Great Taste Awards 2019 for their wild boar and pork, and wild rabbit and pork sausage rolls; and British Pie awards 2019 for their venison and Suffolk ale pie, you can be safe in the knowledge they will taste great. www.trulytraceable.com

The Wild Meat Company AS WE head into November, the season to enjoy the bountiful game meats the region has on offer is well underway. Apart from being a sustainable source of meat it offers up some fantastic recipes to enjoy as we head into the festive season. Add to this the added health benefits compared to more conventional meats and you are onto a winner. Game meat, from wild animals, is very low in fat. Venison for example has only 1% fat compared to 10% with lamb or 11% with beef. Wild birds like pheasants and partridges are 50% lower in fat content than chicken.

The Wild Meat Company stock game meat which eat a naturally foraged diet, rather than mass-produced animal feed. This means that as well as being leaner, their meat has more flavour. Stockists include several East of England Co-op’s throughtout Suffolk and Waitrose in

Saxmundham and Ipswich, as well as many farm shops and butchers across Suffolk. Of course if you can’t get to the shops you can always order online and have it delivered to your door. The Norfolk PX

THE ENGLISH WHISKY CO. mature some of their fine single malt whiskies in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. These casks are full of beautiful, rich, dark sherry before they take delivery, so they decided to take the sherry as well as it is too lovely to leave behind. Since arriving at St. George’s they added some of their single malt to it and left it in the casks to continue maturing. The resulting drink is a wonderful fortified wine that makes a superb drink for many occasions. The chairman prefers it chilled, the MD thinks it is lovely as a dessert wine. How ever you choose to drink it The Norfolk PX is amazing. www.englishwhisky.co.uk

Nelsons Blood

IN 1805 Admiral Lord Nelson fell in battle off the Iberian Coast. Normally a burial at sea would have ordered, however Nelson’s second in command decided to bring him home safely. The hero’s body was steeped in a vat of rum and on the journey home, the crew siphoned off tots from the cask and the name Nelson’s Blood was coined. www.nelsonsbloodnorfolk.co.uk

Places & Faces brings you the ultimate guide to the party season, from what to wear to how not to end up with eggnog on your face.

Food&Drink

What to Wear thick socks, especially if wearing ‘unfamiliar’ shoes. You’ll thank us for it.

Top Tip for Guests

WEAR

It’s one of the biggest dilemmas of the season, and one of the most important to get right if you are going to emerge the other side unscathed. From dreaded ‘wardrobe malfunctions’ to social faux pas and aching feet – all of these potential hurdles can be tackled and cleared in style.

LADIES should also keep it classy, with a stunning LBD or something more glitzy (which you can get away with at this time of year more than most). When it comes to showing off flesh, less is best. Nobody likes a show off. Bearing in mind dancing is bound to feature at some stage, we can’t stress highly enough the importance of comfy shoes. Yes, we know you would love to teeter around on those five-inch heels but after a couple of glasses of prosecco, any Dancing Queen could easily find herself slumped in an undignified heap on the dancefloor. Nobody wants that. Savvy party goers slip a pair of flats into their handbag, just in case.

GENTS, when it comes to smart suits, the advice is simple – keep it classy. In our book, there is no such thing as being ‘over dressed’, but it’s oh-so-easy to get it terribly wrong. Gents can’t go wrong with a classic dark suit and white shirt for any semiformal occasion, work do, or just dinner round at a neighbour’s house. It’s a special time of year, so even if you wouldn’t normally scrub up, this is the time to take full advantage of the opportunity. Not sure if you should wear a tie? Wear one. You can always discreetly slip it off and into your jacket pocket if you feel like you’ve over done it, or just style it out as the suavest chap in the room. You could go the whole hog with a bow tie, but that’s probably best left for formal dinners and parties where black tie is the dress code. In that instance, we advise not being too clever in ‘interpreting’ the brief. Keep it simple and you won’t end up looking (and feeling) stupid.

Alcohol education charity Drinkaware has some sobering stats for you. One in four of us (26%) have regretted something we did at a work Christmas party after drinking too much. Although the survey was based specifically on work parties, they can be applied to any situation. Almost two thirds of those polled said they intend not to drink too much but care less as the night goes on, while a third admitted feeling peer pressure from colleagues to drink.

Top Tip

Yes, it’s the time of over-indulgence, but we all know someone (not mentioning any names) who has pushed the boat out just a tad too far. It’s easily done, especially when everyone is drinking, but it’s important to remember how much you’ve had and what your usual intake is – especially when lethal party cocktails appear.

DRINKAWARE SUGGESTS making every other drink a soft one and avoiding drinking in rounds to help you to drink at your own pace.

Know Your Limits

HERE ARE SOME MORE TOP TIPS FROM DRINKAWARE: DOWNSIZE YOUR DRINKS - If you’re a beer drinker, make the units go further by drinking halves instead of pints. If you’re a wine drinker then opt for a smaller glass. DON’T DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH - A healthy meal before you go out, and snacks between drinks can help to slow down the absorption of alcohol, helping you stay in control. KEEP WARM. Alcohol makes blood flow to the blood vessels near your skin and away from the core of your body. So while it feels like you’re warm because your skin is warm, your vital organs aren’t as warm as you might think they are

Christmas

Eggnog

Traditions

Ingredients

OK, now we’ve been suitably sensible, it’s time to highlight some of the fun things about Christmas parties, which can also provide handy conversation starters. Let’s start with EGGNOG – the Marmite of festive cheer. You may love it, you may hate it, but do you know why it’s called eggnog? One theory is that rum was referred to as grog, and that the egg-based drink was served in wooden mugs called noggins. Eventually that became eggnog. The first recorded recipe dates back to 1775 and although you can easily buy it off the shelf these days, to make eggnog you will need eggs, caster sugar, milk, double cream, nutmeg, and rum (and/or bourbon). Some people make it a few days in advance to improve the taste (if that is possible).

Did you know that MINCE PIES used to be filled with meat (hence the name) like lamb rather than dried fruit and spices? Back in Georgian times, mince pies were a status symbol, and having pies in many shapes and styles was the height of sophistication. One story from the Middle Ages went that if you ate a mince pie every day from Christmas to Twelfth Night, you would have good luck for 12 months. Anyone have the stomach for it?

CRACKERS – not the salty snacks but the table novelties – were apparently invented in the 1840s by a London sweet maker called Tom Smith. Legend has it that he was inspired while sitting in front of his log fire one night, wondering how to sell his sweets wrapped in mottos. He decided then to create the modern cracker, that opens with a crack when pulled. When Tom died, his three sons continued the cracker business, and added hats to the mix, and a range of novelty gifts. Did you know: The Royal Family still has crackers especially made for them to this day. KISSING UNDER THE MISTLETOE has been around since the 1700s but it was those racy Victorians who really made it a ‘thing’. As far back as Roman times, mistletoe was seen as a plant of peace and friendship, but it’s unclear how the whole kissing thing started (but probably something to do with too much eggnog).

• 6 medium free-range eggs (preferably organic and as fresh as possible), separated • 150g golden caster sugar • 500ml whole milk • 400ml double cream • 350ml rum or bourbon (or a mixture of the two, depending on your preference) • freshly grated nutmeg (to preferred taste)

METHOD Whisk egg yolks in a bowl with 100g of the caster sugar until the mixture is pale, thick and yellow. Stir in the milk, double cream, and the rum and/or bourbon. Add a little grated nutmeg if you like your nog this way. Pour the mixture into two 750ml bottles with stoppers and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. (The alcohol prevents any spoilage of the eggs or cream.) Place the egg whites in a box and freeze until ready to serve the egg nog. When you are ready to serve, defrost the egg whites into a metal or glass bowl. Using a handheld electric mixer, whisk the egg whites until opaque and foamy. Add the remaining 50g of sugar and whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed. Pour the egg nog from the bottles into a large bowl and fold in the egg whites until well combined. Ladle the egg nog into glass tumblers and serve with a little freshly grated nutmeg over the top of each glass.

New Year Traditions

If you think Christmas parties have some strange traditions, they’re not a patch on New Year. One of the most famous traditions is the singing of Auld Lang Syne (which translates as Old Long Since), written by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Singing the song on New Year’s Eve, or Hogmanay, began in Scotland but quickly spread around the world. Standing in a circle and joining hands crossed over the body is part of the fun, and is to symbolize friendship, as you may expect. If you are partying at someone’s house, you may find them having some odd beliefs, such as getting a man with dark hair to carry a piece of coal into the house for ‘good luck’. This ‘first footer’ – the first person to enter the house after New Year – can expect to be plied with food and drink, often into the wee hours. Other people insist on taking pots and pans into the street and running around the outside of the house banging them relentlessly. This goes back

to an old tradition designed to ward off evil spirits (like eggnog, perhaps). If visiting friends and relatives from around the world, there are other traditions to be aware of. Italians may throw furniture out of the window, while the Spanish like to eat 12 white grapes (one on each chime of midnight), and the Danes love to smash a plate. As the clock strikes midnight, as well as singing Auld Lang Syne, exchanging kisses is also common practice. The saying goes “kiss the person you hope to keep kissing” – so you’ve been warned. 47

Five minutes with

Chris & Richard Graveling from The Grove, Cromer

T

hroughout the years, as

The Grove has passed through generations, it has evolved and transformed into the wonderful, independent family-run establishment that it is today. In 1936 Robert and Hilda Graveling took ownership of the house, moving in with their young family and turning what was previously a private holiday home into a thriving guest house. In 1978 Robert sadly passed away, so son John took over the running of the house with his wife Ann. The couple went on to have five children and when they retired in 2010 they passed the business over to their children – Richard, Chris, Elizabeth, Hannah and Ruth – who now work in partnership to continue the family business. Places&Faces catches up with Chris and Richard Graveling to ask them a few questions. Chris runs the business side of things and works from home a lot, spending two days a week at The Grove. His focus is on the marketing, financial planning and the long term future of the Grove. Richard is the general manager of The Grove whose focus is on delivering quality, but keeping the atmosphere relaxed. Do you have any food heroes? Chris: Tim Haywood, I love the way he combines food prep with DIY. Richard: Sarah Pettegree of Brays Pork Pies, quite simply the best pies in the world. What’s the best meal you have eaten and where was this? Chris: A barbecued beetroot dish at Midsummer House, in Cambridge. It was very simple, yet absolutely delicious. Richard: Curried lamb at the Kuwait Towers restaurant. It just melted in my mouth.

Richard & Chris Graveling

What are your favourite dishes at The Grove and at home? Chris: The Gressingham duck with Wherry gravy. At home, it’s all about crumbles right now: wild blackberries, and Grove apples with granola on top. My children make it much better than I ever could. Richard: The monkfish with pork from the menu, and at home my wife’s fish pie. What is your favourite tipple and what food would you pair with this? Chris: I’m partial to a full red like a Montepulciano D’abruzzo, which goes well with a good strong cheese or meaty meal. Richard: The Humbleyard Bacchus white, which is produced in Norfolk and always goes down well, particularly with white fish. If you were having guests round what would you impress them with? Chris: Smoked mackerel or salmon done in my homemade smoker… a design pinched from a Tim Haywood book. Richard: Pea and lime risotto. What’s the best thing you enjoy about your job? Chris: The variety. One minute you can be planning a new bathroom, the other you are greeting guests. Richard: It is great to be able to share what our parents and grandparents worked so hard to develop over the past 80 years. How do you relax? Chris: Making wooden sculptures. Richard: Coaching youth football.

Run us through a typical day for you. Chris: I’m often computer based, but when I’m on site at The Grove, it can be anything from mending a hole in the roof or unblocking a drain, to greeting or serving guests, usually on the same day. Richard: I spend a lot of time behind the desk and talking to guests, juggling this with ongoing informal staff meetings and discussions. What is your proudest achievement? Chris: Winning AA Story of the Year, and then Eviivo Hidden Gem for the South East within three months of each other in 2017. It was quite unbelievable. Richard: Gaining two rosettes in 2014. Our whole business went uphill from that moment. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Chris: Coaching hockey, and being the children’s taxi driver. Richard: Filming Norwich City matches and being the children’s taxi driver. Can you sum up the The Grove in ive words? Chris & Richard: Relaxing, quality, homely, family country-house. _ THE GROVE 95 Overstrand Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 0DJ www.thegrovecromer.co.uk 51

Siropas Rangphet (O.B.)

from The Crawish Inn, Thursford

H

aving spent

most of his life in the hospitality business, Siropas Rangphet – known as OB - has been running The Crawfish Inn for fourteen years. Having created a menu influenced by authentic Thai cuisine, OB sources the finest ingredients from Thailand, cooking classic dishes seasoned with kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, Pandun leaf and other essential ingredients. OB serves an extraordinary array of dishes, ranging from the pleasantly mild to the intensely spicy!

Do you have any food heroes? Rick Stein, it would be my dream and a real honour to have a chance to cook for him. What’s the best meal you have eaten – and where was this? Growing up in a foodie family who eat out a few times a week, it’s very difficult to pinpoint the favourite. The two that I always go back to are “Just One” and “River Barge”@Chatrium Hotel, both restaurants in Bangkok and have had a big influence in the way I cook my food. What are your favourite dishes at The Crawish Inn and at home? If I was a Crawfish Inn Customer I would order Green Chicken curry and King Prawns with Garlic to share between 2 people. The 2 dishes complement each other very well. At home I really enjoy a well hung, thick slice of Sirloin, medium rare with a creamy peppercorn sauce. What is your favourite tipple and what food would you pair with this? I don’t drink very often now a days but I would recommend full favoured wine, something like Gewürztraminer for a white and Malbec for a red. If you were having guests round what would you impress them with? Massive plates of grilled seafood. What’s the best thing you enjoy about your job? Friendship! I have made so many friends over our 15 years at 52

Crawfish Inn. Many of my regulars have become my close friends, how many people can say that their friends come to see them at work, we have a laugh and they also pay my wages lol How do you relax? Music on a very good HiFi system, the closer to the sound of a “live concert” the better I can relax. Run us through a typical day for you Are you sure you want to know that? I am not a movie star, just a chef you know? What is your proudest achievement? Crawfish Inn, of course. I like to think that we have a very good name here. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love eating out and er.... collecting perfume! Can you sum up the The Crawish Inn in ive words? Quality, Freshness, Respectful, Friendly, and Delicious. THE CRAWFISH INN Holt Road, Thursford, is open for dinner from 6pm-10pm but closed Mondays, except on Bank Holidays. It is additionally open daily from 5pm to late during Thursford’s Christmas show. For more information or to book visit www.crawishinn.com or call 01328 878313.

Top with a little champagne and leave to settle (as it will bubble up) then fill up with more champagne. Gently mix with a cocktail stirrer then garnish with a strip of lemon zest.

BULLARDS LONDON DRY GIN ABV 42.5% 70cl | £40 A dry juniper core with a gently spiced sweetness. Hints of cinnamon and cardamom linger throughout while the light, sweet spice of tonka bean softens the gin. www.bullardsspirits.co.uk

The Classic Simple yet decadent, this staple champagne cocktail is perfect for special occasions. For an extra hit of festive flavour, add a splash of cognac.

ABV 6.5% | 500ml | 8 pack £18 Strong, dark and aromatic. www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk

Festive Bellini

Method Ingredients • 1 sugar cube (or a teaspoon of fine sugar) • Angostura bitters • Champagne • Orange or lemon zest, to garnish

ANGOSTURA BITTERS ABV 43% | 200ml | £10.50 A skilfully blended aromatic preparation of gentian, a flowering plant, in combination with a variety of vegetable colouring matter. Made with the same ingredients since 1824. Angostura aromatic bitters was first made in 1824 by Dr. J.G.B. Siegert in the town of Angostura, Venezuela. available at Waitrose & Partners

Try it with... ST PETER’S CREAM STOUT

Combine all the fruity flavours of Christmas in this refreshing bellini – great as a welcome drink at a festive gathering, or light enough to sip during Christmas morning brunch.

Method If using a sugar cube, soak it by holding it securely on top of the Angostura bitters bottle and turning the bottle upside down for a second or two. If using loose sugar, simply tip a dash of bitters onto the teaspoon. Drop the soaked sugar into a champagne flute and top with chilled champagne. Add a strip of orange or lemon zest to garnish.

It couldn’t be easier – half fill champagne flutes with Guinness or stout. Slowly top up with champagne, taking care not to make too large a head. Alternatively, half fill the flutes with champagne first and ‘float’ the Guinness or stout on top – pour it in slowly to achieve the distinctive layered look.

In a food processor or blender, puree the chopped peach halves. Then, stir in the juice of two clementines, the sugar syrup and drops of orange blossom water. Pour into flutes and top up with chilled champagne.

Ingredients • 2 chilled tinned peach halves • 2 clementines • 25ml sugar syrup • 2 drops orange blossom water • Champagne

Try it with... ADNAMS CHAMPAGNE, BRUT (MAGNUM) ABV 12% 150cl | £47.99 The blend is 80% Pinot Meunier; the main variety in the Marne gives maturity and flavour while the 20% Chardonnay brings structure and elegance, and its telltale citrus hallmark. www.adnams.co.uk

The best night’s sleep you’ve had for years THERE’S NOTHING more important than a good night’s sleep. This is something that Glasswells promise you’ll get with their huge selection of beds. From fold out sofa beds, to children’s bunks, bed frames, mattresses and luxury divan sets, their sleep experts will help you find the perfect fit. Do you wake up still tired? This could be down to not enough space in your bed! A larger bed shouldn’t be seen as a luxury, but a necessity. Here are five reasons why a bigger bed is better...

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 Wake up to Daylight SAD Light Light at the start of the day is the most effective way to reset your internal clock and the daily cycle of hormones, metabolism and sleep. The Bodyclock Shine 300 from Lumie is a Class 1 graded medical device that will introduce you to the benefits of sleeping and waking with light, so that you can experience a more regular sleep and wake pattern. £129

Beurer WL50 Wake Up to Daylight Table Lamp The WL50 from Beurer allows you to fall asleep naturally and wake up gently with simulations of sunrise and sunset. Its slimline design, thanks to LED technology, is equipped with various light and sound settings that can help to support the sleep rhythm. £69.99

1

You spend a third of your life in bed. This means that by the time you are 60 you’ll have spent around 20 years in bed! This is a huge amount of time, so it’s essential that the bed you are in provides a quality night’s sleep. Glasswells sleep experts can help to ensure your new bed is perfectly suited to you, and your partner if you are sharing; not only will this improve sleep quality, but it will also mean your bed and mattress will last you longer.

2

16 other countries can’t be wrong! This is how many countries have – on average – larger bed sizes than we do in the UK. Many other European countries sleep in spacious 160cm by 200cm beds, whereas Brits traditionally buy a double (135cm by 190cm).

3

There’s no easy way to say this, but you may not be as slim as you once were. As we get older, unfortunately, our bodies change. Did you know that a double bed gives each sleeper just 65cm (2’3”) of sleeping space – this is less than a baby’s cot! A king size bed comes in at 150cm wide (that’s 75cm of space each) and a super king is 180cm, which is the equivalent of two single beds put together.

5

It doesn’t actually cost much more. You may think that going up a size or two would be a lot more expensive, but it really isn’t. Each £100 you spend on a new bed works out as just 3.9p per day over 7 years, a small investment for something so important for aiding your general health and wellbeing. Glasswells often run promotions where you can buy a king size bed for the price of a double bed, making those all-important extra inches even more affordable. We all spend as much as we can afford on the best possible home, holiday, car and mobile phone, and the same should be said for our beds – it’s our haven, the place we recharge and refresh our bodies and minds. For more information visit: www.glasswells.co.uk

Beurer WL 90 4-in-1 Wake Up Light The WL 90 is a 4-in-1 product, boasting not only a wake-up light setting, but also a mood light with an option of 256 nuances, a reading lamp and a music station. Choose between a radio alarm, streamed music via Bluetooth or ten wake-up melodies. It can also help you to get to sleep as the sunset simulation gently fades out the day, while soft melodic sounds and a dimmable red light will help you drift off to sleep in the first phase. £139.99

4

People move 60-70 times per night. Once the honeymoon period is over, you really should try to put as much space between yourself and your partner as possible! This will reduce the chance of your sleep being disturbed and should mean you wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Who said romance was dead! Available at www.johnlewis.com 69

Blackshore

unique handmade clothing SUFFOLK-BASED clothing brand Blackshore Coastal Clothing has opened a unique shop-with-workshop on Southwold High Street, which will combine a retail area with a garment-making studio. The company, which was created in Southwold by local resident Simon Middleton, and is backed by a group of experienced entrepreneurs, originally set up its workshop in a former fishing net factory in Lowestoft, in June this year. But now the brand is moving to Southwold to make its coastal-workwear inspired clothes, and to offer customers the unique opportunity to see them being made. Blackshore opened the doors of the new premises at 37 High Street in Southwold on Saturday 26 October. The shop occupies the front half of the building, and its sewing room and cutting room is at the back. Shoppers will be invited to see the company’s hand-made jackets, trousers, shirts and other garments being cut-out, constructed and finished, and will be able to talk to the garment makers about the

70

processes involved. Customers will be able to buy ready-to-wear products, or to order from the range of designs, with made-toorder products usually ready within 14 days. Blackshore’s founder and managing director Simon Middleton is an experienced manufacturing entrepreneur. He created the Shackleton menswear brand some years ago, and has also run a musical instrument factory in Norwich, as well as being a published author and consultant on brand strategy. Mr Middleton said, “Our few months of manufacturing in Lowestoft were a fantastic start for the business, but we were located in an industrial area, so it didn’t get us in front of customers. When we held a pop-up shop in Southwold in the summer it was obvious how much people love the clothes and our story when they can get to see and touch products and talk to the makers. Coming home to Southwold, where the business was conceived, allows us to give a unique experience to shop

visitors: actually seeing their clothes being made. It’s the old-fashioned approach, and the opposite of soulless and unethical fast fashion. We think it’s unique in Suffolk.” Blackshore has two full-time garment makers who have many years’ experience in every kind of clothing. “Our garment makers are highly skilled and experienced. They’ve made everything from wedding dresses to flying jackets, and from jeans to carpet bags. Now they’re making beautiful Blackshore clothing.” As well as the clothes made in the Southwold workshop, Blackshore sells its own-design knitwear which is made for the company in small factories in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and the Channel Islands; always in Britain or the British Isles. Another popular item is a sailor’s canvas duffel bag, made exclusively for the brand in a Norfolk Broads boatyard. All Blackshore products come with a lifetime repair guarantee, so that customers can bring garments back in the future for running repairs. Blackshore will also stock items from a small number of other madein-Britain brands. “We are looking at other brands to find complementary products. But the essential criteria are that they must be of the highest quality, with real character, and they must be made in the UK. I set this business up because I believe in small-scale, sustainable, UK-based making. We are the very antithesis of brands which claim to be ‘gloriously British’ and so on, but which actually have everything made for them in the Far East. I want to make great products here in Suffolk, and to create good work for local people too.” Simon added. www.blackshore.cc

H&M’s Conscious Exclusive range is back with a 10th-anniversary collection and the mood is clear: get set to dress up. Suffused with the heady glamour of mysterious balls and dazzling parties from a bygone era, the collection fuses sumptuous after-dark sartorial hits with versatile wardrobe binders – and all through the lens of more sustainable fashion.

“The Conscious Exclusive collections at H&M have each been ground-breaking in their own way, so it’s very exciting to present our tenth collection which proves that innovation never ceases: this season it incorporates recycled brass, recycled zinc and TENCELTM X REFIBRATM lyocell, an exciting lyocell fibre partly made from waste cotton, for the very first time. We are thrilled, too, that many of the innovations we have debuted with our more sustainable line have since been incorporated into our other fashion lines across the business. It’s vital that H&M keeps pushing the boundaries of future-facing fashion, proving to the world that glamour and sustainability goes hand in hand.”

a starring role in this second edition of the Conscious Exclusive collection in 2019: the China blue roseprinted jacquard prom dress and the floor-sweeping dusty pink tulle gown are all-eyes-on-me statement pieces next to sequined harlequin-patterned, ribbon-tied minis – all made from recycled polyester blends. Meanwhile, a sumptuous velvet recycled polyester suit with an embellished belt is as versatile as pretty, lightweight knits in blends made out of TENCELTM lyocell fibres and wool. A beaded cape made partly with recycled glass beads, a ruffled velvet top made from recycled polyester and a selection of exquisite hair pins made with recycled zinc and brass mix promise super-spangled, scenestealing effect.

Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M.

“The starting points for the AW19 Conscious Exclusive collection were mysterious masquerade balls that took place in the 1960s. We were thinking about dazzling, one-off events where the anticipation in the build-up only increases the pleasure. We wanted to create special pieces that will stay in your wardrobe for years to come thanks to their endless versatility. Our customers will find that each piece can be styled according to their personality and mood; we hope these clothes are cherished, and invested with many happy memories of glorious evenings spent having fun.” Ella Soccorsi, designer at H&M.

say Jarrold homeware buyers Simon Mitchell and Sara Clarke

As we fast approach the end of the year, now is the time for reflection and contemplation, and this nostalgia for the heady days gone by is being felt in this autumn’s restoration interior trend. Inspired by television programmes such as Grand Designs and Old House New Home, which sympathetically transform traditional architecture into contemporary abodes, restoration is about reusing, upcycling and using sustainable materials in furniture and home accessories. It’s a look that can instantly add vibrancy and character to your home. Reclaimed timber gives your home a warm rustic

feel, while the addition of faux plants gives a contemporary twist. Also look for well-crafted items in earthy and neutral hues, which add a touch of luxe to your home, rather than the chintzy vintage vibe this look has had in the past. Restoration is also easy to mix and match with other styles – a traditional country home can be given a update with a retro leather dining chair around an existing rustic wooden table, or a minimalist space can be given a softer edge with hanging plants in recycled glass pots or an industrial style lampshade.

How to avoid interior design

BLOOPERS

This month our resident interior design expert Julie Handforth-Doidge gives us some useful advice on how to avoid some of those classic interior design bloopers!

H

AVE YOU EVER

introduced some new furniture, fabrics or curtains to your room only to wonder why they don’t look right together? In this month’s column we will try and help you avoid these mistakes so you can create a space or room that looks fresh and professionally styled. A piece of furniture that you look at in a shop can seem fabulous but consider what it will look like in your own home. Important things to remember as an interior designer is colour, lighting, room size, scale and placement. These are all vital when designing rooms. When walking into a room it should be laid out to different heights, you do not want everything on the same level. Utilise your furnishings to accomplish this, particularly with art and window dressings. Shop around and budget before you buy, it is so easy to impulse buy and get it wrong - when it comes to designing a room I would strongly suggest that you choose your fabrics and textures first. A common mistake is painting first. It is easier to buy fabrics that you like and then pick out the paint to match.

Every room needs a focal point, this offers a place for the eye to rest and assigns a room with a function. It is so overlooked not giving each room a purpose. Some really simple steps to think about to avoid making mistakes include:• Buying furniture that is too big or too small • Hanging art too high • Purchasing uncomfortable dining chairs • Bad lighting or not enough • Do not be scared of colour introduction Be careful if you are trying to follow the latest trends, if you are not careful within a short time your home appear dated instead of timeless. Do not make the mistake of buying furniture that matches too well, you do not want your home to look like a furniture showroom. The best rooms are often ones that look like they have been collected over time. Here are some more tips you might find useful: Avoid pillow overload, too many pillows on a sofa or bed can look sloppy and uncomfortable and don’t forget if you do like lots of pillows and cushions then to keep them looking nice they need a lot of work arranging and puffing them up every day. Avoid lots of visible cables around the home, they can look very messy. Hide them.

Furniture that doesn’t fit. Measure. Measure. Measure. Furniture which looks too big or even too small can change the look in a room. Bad lighting. It’s so not necessary! Create layered lighting by using floor lamps, table lamps, and task lighting. Different styles of fixtures and sources produces lighting that highlights great features, eliminates shadowing and gives your home a rich look. Wall Art. Pictures hung too high? Consider the exact location and space when hanging pictures and wall art. Pushing furniture against the walls. Dead giveaway that you have no interior design skills. Bring it in a bit and make sure it looks cosy. If you need any help or advice then call into our showroom and we will be pleased to try and help.

Magic Makeovers The quick, easy and cost effective way to change the look of your kitchen Are you looking to renovate your

dull or dated kitchen but putting off the makeover because of the cost and disruption it will cause? If so, you are in good company. According to a 2018 YouGov poll conducted by John Lewis Finance, a kitchen makeover tops the list of most popular home improvements. The survey also said that 60% of Brits have a project in the pipeline, but 22% of us have been putting it off for more than six years! Installing a brand new kitchen or bathroom can be a disruptive business, which is no doubt one of the main reasons why people put this off for so long. In your home, you

Centre of attention The family-owned Bawdeswell Garden Centre really does offer something for everyone – even if you don’t have a garden!

B awdeswell

Garden Centre has been owned by husband and wife team Peter and Judy Underwood since 1983, taking over what was a rundown conifer nursery called Bennets. Peter came from a farming background, but actually favoured horticulture, so spent his early career working for a wholesale seed supplier in London. This was followed

Alton in Hampshire. It soon became the biggest horticultural supplier to the garden trade in the UK. In 1983, having established this successful business, Peter decided to move sideways and try his hand at retailing. This resulted in him and Judy taking over Bennets in Bawdeswell. The conifer nursery was steadily updated and improved

Peter’s father had started a small business in 1947, selling packed seed, followed on with pre packed fertilizers and horticultural products sold locally to shops in Norfolk and Suffolk. Peter learned from this experience and concentrated his selling on the shop trade only, eventually opening wholesale depots in Chelmsford, Birmingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and 88

with the help of a team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff, acquiring additional land to make it into the garden centre destination we know today. Bawdeswell is one of Norfolk’s premier garden centres, offering a truly unique customer experience. There is the beautifully landscaped Millennium Garden, where customers can sit and relax and, in the summer months, enjoy free Jazz in the Garden events. Together with their fantastic Treetops adventure play area and their

demonstration vegetable garden, Bawdeswell say they offer something that other garden centres in Norfolk just can’t match. In addition to the brilliant selection of indoor and outdoor plants, shrubs and trees, garden tools, pots and sundries that you’d expect to find in a garden centre, there is an exceptional food area – Reeve’s Parlour Larder. Here, they sell a huge variety of items from gin, wine and beer, to chocolates, biscuits, condiments, chutneys and jams. Bawdeswell also has

daily deliveries of fresh items including bread, meats, pies and, during the summer, fresh fruit, all from trusted local suppliers. Don’t feel like cooking tonight? Try their extensive range of Cooks frozen meals! The centre’s selection of quality oak and cane furniture is extensive and, with free delivery within Norfolk, is always popular. Visitors to the garden centre are always amazed at the variety of products available, from the standalone toy shop, to the large gift area, a great selection of clothing and more books, cards and stationery products than you could imagine. Bawdeswell really does have something for everyone!

Bawdeswell’s Bluebell Square shopping centre contains a variety of independently run concessions, including a florist, dolls house shop and a shoe shop, amongst others. Then there’s the famous Reeve’s Parlour restaurant – extremely popular at all times – offering freshly cooked meals every day, using local produce whenever possible. Open from 9am, it serves breakfast, lunch and tea, coffee and cakes seven days a week, with Sunday roasts being especially popular. Special Afternoon Teas are legendary and vouchers for these make a great gift (these must be booked in advance).

Throughout the year, Bawdeswell also hosts a range of special events. In addition to Jazz in the Garden, this year they’ve had guest talks by celebrity gardeners Bob Flowerdew and Alan Gray, held a Garden Bug clinic with entomologist Dr Ian Bedford, and had a free Hallowe’en Trail in the Millennium Garden. Bawdeswell also has live reindeer and Santa over the Christmas period and holds a charity weekend event every year in aid of the RNLI & East Anglian Air Ambulance Service – taking place this year over the weekend of November 23 & 24; always a popular and well-supported event. Throughout 2020 Bawdeswell is planning some new, exciting events too. Details for these and everything else to do with Bawdeswell Garden Centre can be found on their website: www. bawdeswellgardencentre.com Bawdeswell Garden Centre prides itself on offering knowledgeable and friendly customer service and constantly strives to improve all aspects of the garden centre, offering the best products at competitive prices. But don’t take their word for it – pay them a visit and decide for yourself. As they always say, they are more than just a garden centre! ‘Tis the season to

get creative There’s nothing like a wreath making workshop to get you into the festive spirit. There are a number of instructive courses on offer throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, but if you’d like to have a go at making these eye-catching decorations at home, simply grab a mince pie, put on some Christmas carols and follow this handy guide from Florence and Flowers

A

s the month of December approaches, it brings bountiful opportunities to get outdoors and to get creative. One activity which combines both of these is the making of festive wreaths. The timeless tradition of making a Christmas wreath often starts with foraging for natural materials which are incorporated into the final design. Simple to create, a homemade wreath brings lasting joy throughout December and beyond. As a result, it’s no surprise that festive wreath making courses are becoming increasingly popular. One such course is offered by our team of creative floral designers at Florence and Flowers, based at our

workshop in Blundeston, Lowestoft. Florence and Flowers usually specialise in creating bespoke floral designs using naturally dried and preserved flowers and foliage, however December sees us diversifying into using fresh materials – most notably in the creation of our festive wreaths and the facilitation of Christmas wreath making workshops. These include all the necessary fresh foliage, feathers, dried materials, seasonal embellishments and, of course, festive refreshments. For those not able to attend a course, we have provided the following step-by-step guide to creating your own traditional mossbased festive wreath. 91

House&Home

‘Tis the season to

get creative

1

Start with a wire wreath ring and tie a loop of ribbon or twine onto the top of the ring (this will be used to hang your completed wreath).

2

Unravel a short piece of wire from a reel and tie onto the frame. Keeping the wire taut on the reel use it to bind moss onto the frame all of the way round. An even, thick layer of damp, fresh moss will help to make the wreath look fuller and keep the foliage fresh and lush for longer. You won’t see the moss once the wreath is completed so this is a good opportunity to practise your binding skills without worrying about being too neat!

3

Gather together a selection of different evergreen foliage, for example: pine, spruce, holly, conifer and ivy. You can also use dried flowers and fresh foliages, such as eucalyptus cinerea, which will gradually dry over time but continue to look and smell beautiful. Cut down several stems, creating small fan-shaped bunches of differently textured foliages.

4

Use the reel of wire to bind the bunches, one at a time, on top of the moss. Lay each bunch so that it overlaps the last and the wire will be kept hidden from view. When you bind the last bunch on, lift the first bunch and tuck the stems of the final little spray of foliage neatly underneath. Finish by firmly wrapping the wire round the last stems several times then tie off and cut the wire, bending the sharp end round and embedding firmly into the mossed base.

5

Embellish your wreath with decorations of your choice. This is your chance to make your wreath unique and personal to your own style and tastes. As such, there are no rights and wrongs to what you use for your final flourishes. Anything goes, from pinecones, feathers, dried hydrangea, cinnamon sticks and orange slices to festive ornaments and beyond. Use short lengths of thicker stubb wire to attach your embellishments, piercing through the moss base and securing tightly against the frame.

Our wreath making courses are taking place throughout December. Spaces are filling up fast, meaning we may release extra dates closer to the time. Care home or

YOUR HOME?

THE USUAL ASSUMPTION is that when someone’s care needs reach a certain point, the only course of action is to move into a residential home. This can mean couples are split up when one of them needs care. Purely Care has an alternative solution. Their live-in carers are successfully keeping couples together at home. Margaret and Don had been married for 61 years, but found life was getting difficult. Margaret had been an excellent cook, ran the home efficiently and continued to look glamorous. When she became forgetful Don stepped in to do the cooking and housework, but poor sight and a heart condition meant he became exhausted dealing with Margaret’s increasing needs.

& 95

A live-in carer has given them back quality of life. Margaret now has personal care every day and keeps active by helping the carer to prepare vegetables and fold the laundry. Don can enjoy quality time with Margaret relieved of daily chores. Both Margaret and Don receive a direct payment for their care from the local authority. This is combined to pay for the live-in carer to attend to both their needs. www.purelycare.co.uk

Got to go? I’m sure you all remember from previous years, during November men suddenly start sprouting moustaches in aid of Movember. One of the aims of Movember is to raise awareness of common male urological conditions, such as prostate and testicular cancers.

S

hahnaz Fraser

of Spire Norwich Hospital discusses one common male urological condition – prostate enlargement – with Consultant Urologist, Mr Mark Rochester.

Mr Rochester, prostate enlargement is one of the most common diseases to affect men beyond middle age, what is the prostate? “The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder and just in front of the rectum. Enlargement of the prostate gland affects virtually all men over 50 and the majority of men in their 60s have urinary difficulties due to this enlargement as it compresses the urethra, the pipe that lets urine flow out of the bladder.” What are the common symptoms of an enlarged prostate? “The common symptoms are increased frequency of urination during the day and at night, hesitancy (a delay in starting to pass urine), urgency, weak stream, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying and straining to pass urine.” And how would it be diagnosed? “The diagnosis of an enlarged prostate is made by assessment of symptoms, rectal examination of the prostate gland, urine test, electronic measurement of urine flow called uroflowmetry and an ultrasound measurement of the post-void residual to assess bladder emptying. In some cases an endoscopic examination of the bladder, called a flexible cystoscopy is required. In some select patients, bladder pressure and flow studies called uro-dynamic studies are useful.” Mr Rochester continues: “Men with mild symptoms are managed with watchful

waiting and offered lifestyle advice, such as avoiding excessive intake of caffeinated drinks. Patients suffering from moderate symptoms are treated with oral medication, many see a noticeable difference over three to six months.” What other treatment is available for an enlarged prostate? For patients with severe symptoms, or whose symptoms have not responded to medication there are a range of procedures available.

If you have symptoms related to your prostate, bladder ageing, a urine infection or any other causes for concern, it’s very important to discuss these with your GP. Transurethral Incision of P rostate (TUIP) or Transurethral resection of prostate gland (TURP) – carried out under general anaesthetic (meaning you’ll be asleep during the procedure) and requires a stay in hospital of between twothree days. Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) – is a new procedure that allows tissue to be removed with less bleeding. In most cases this can be

101

performed as a day case (with no overnight stay) and has a lower re-treatment rate than traditional TUIP and is suitable for all men and all sizes of prostate, and has an excellent impact on men’s quality of life. Prostatic Urethral Lift Implant (UroLift) – holds the prostate open rather than removing tissue to improve symptoms. This has the advantage of being performed under sedation or local anaesthetic, with quick recovery. Rezum – a further new procedure where steam is used to reduce the prostate blockage. In a very small minority of patients, who have an extremely large prostate gland, open removal of the prostate through an incision in the lower abdomen may be carried out. Mr Rochester concludes “If you have symptoms related to your prostate, bladder ageing, a urine infection or any other causes for concern, it’s very important to discuss these with your GP. If necessary they will refer you on to a specialist for further investigation. It’s always best to check, rather than ignore symptoms, don’t take a ‘fingers crossed’ approach.”

Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...

AB

LE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for near ly four decades and now provides live -in Care Services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alte rnative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably lead s to either at the time of an assessm ent or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of cris is, about specific factors can be diffi cult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regu lar basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information . Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: What is the Warm Home Discount Scheme? Answer: The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a government scheme that gives extra help to people struggling with their energy bills. It’s regulated by Ofgem and if you’re eligible you’ll get a one-off annual rebate, currently £140.00, to help with your energy bill. You’ll qualify for the rebate automatically if on 7 July 2019 you were getting the Guaranteed Credit element of Pension Credit (with or without Savings Credit). For further details visit: www.gov.uk › the-warm-home-discount-scheme

Question: As a young person in the 1940’s I used to write to several pen pals. I would like to do something like that again via letter writing not email. Is it possible to still find pen pals? Answer: The website Global Pen Friends can help you find pen pals to write to. If you visit their website you can put in the age range and country of the world, including the UK, you would like to write to and you will get details of other people who are also still letter writing listing their hobbies, interests, etc. Question: I am a motorist who is oicially disabled. I have recently moved to a street where there is on street parking and often, I cannot park outside my home or access my garage. Is there anything I can do about it? Answer: the following advice comes from www.disabledtraveladvice.co.uk: Parking Near Home - If your disability means that you need to park close to your home, your local council can help. If you live in an area where everybody parks on the street, you can arrange to have a special disabled parking space created for your car or for a car driven by somebody living at your address who helps you get around. If you have private parking at your home but can’t always access it because of how other people park, you can ask the council to mark the street as an access route. If your disability 103

means you can no longer use the parking facilities on your property, you can apply for a reserved-on street parking space.

Question: I am a disabled pensioner and I am considering moving into mobile home which would be situated in my daughter’s large garden. Is it possible to get disabled friendly mobile homes? Answer: Yes, it is possible to buy mobile homes suitable for people with a disability. Adapted facilities can include access to the home, interior fittings such as a wet room, low level kitchen, extra wide doors, handrails, etc. There are several manufacturers of disabled friendly mobile homes and these can be found online.

Question: I am disabled but would like to see if it is possible for me to ride a motorbike? Where can I go for advice? Answer: NABD is the association for disabled riders. It was set up in 1991 and now has over 9000 members. Visit their website at www.nabd.org.uk or give them a call on 0844 415 4848 for further information.

ensions and ISAs

are both tax-efficient ways of putting money aside for the future and each has its place in a diversified investment strategy. There are strong arguments for following both routes: we explore here some of the advantages and disadvantages of each solution. Both pensions and ISAs offer largely tax-free growth within the pension or ISA wrapper and each allows investment in cash investments and in stocks and shares. Each can be tailored to match the investor’s investment risk profile and any preferences – such as ethical investing – held by the investor. Both allow substantial sums to be built up over a period of years in a tax-protected environment. In both solutions you can change the investment assets held in your portfolio as and when needed, and ongoing advice and investment management will be of benefit to help secure ongoing growth. With both pensions and ISAs, there is an annual allowance limiting the amount that can be invested in a tax year. For the 2019/20 tax year, the normal annual allowance for pensions is £40,000 and the ISA allowance is £20,000. Higher earners and those who have started taking flexible

Pensions

We regularly recommend that our clients invest in ISAs and pensions. Carl Lamb, Director and Chartered Financial Planner with Smith & Pinching, explains why both have their place in tax-efficient investment strategies.

access to their pension savings may see a reduced annual allowance for pensions. Although both pensions and ISAs are tax-efficient in terms of their gains and growth, there is a difference in the way that tax is applied when putting money in and taking money out. Contributions to personal pensions have the benefit of tax relief which, essentially, gives you back the tax you paid on the value of the contribution, adding it to the pension fund. This means that you get the tax benefit at the point of the contribution. When it comes to taking money out of the pension fund, however, only 25 per cent of the fund can be withdrawn free of tax. The remaining fund is then taxed as income at your marginal rate of tax that applies when you take it. The other point to bear in mind about pensions is, of course, that your pension savings are potentially locked away for many years: you cannot start to withdraw money from your pension fund until you reach the minimum pension age which is currently age 55. It’s also important to be aware that once you start taking flexible benefits from your fund, a reduced annual allowance of £4,000 is applied,

limiting the additional savings you can make into your pension fund from that point onwards. With ISAs, the income you use to put into your savings has already been subject to income tax, if you are a taxpayer, so there is no tax advantage at the point of going in. However, when it comes to taking money out of your ISAs, you do get a benefit as any money withdrawn from ISAs is not taxed as income at the point of withdrawal. ISAs offer greater flexibility in terms of the timing of withdrawals, too. You may include some investments in your ISA that tie up your money for two, three or five years, perhaps, but broadly speaking you can access your ISA savings much more readily. Financial planning is a process that helps you balance the advantages and disadvantages of different financial solutions. It’s about getting the right mix of tax-efficient savings and investments, potentially using both pensions and ISAs to optimise the benefits of both. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and not advice. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

Tell us something that people don’t know about you. I am an avid music collector and have built a collection of nearly 3,000 vinyl records. I am delighted with this number, my wife however is less so… What is your proudest achievement? Being a family man, watching both my kids flourish in everything they do makes me incredibly proud.

is the general manager of Norfolk Cottages. He looks after a local team of 35, who help holiday cottage owners take their property from idea to realisation. Matt and his team ensure that the guests experience the best holidays and destinations in the county. What do you like about living in Norfolk? Norfolk is such a diverse place to live. Offering easy access to a fabulous array of coastline as well as rolling countryside, it caters for so many people in so many ways. Couple this with the fine city of Norwich, which still keeps hold of its independent charm, what isn’t there to like? How does Norfolk Cottages make a difference to people’s lives? Working in tourism in Norfolk means that we can make a huge impact for so many people who live, work and for those who visit the county. Our customer centric approach to all that we do means that the experience we deliver is that which we would expect our self and adds real value to everyone we touch. 106

What do you most enjoy about working with people and businesses in our region? Living and working in Norfolk you meet such amazing, driven people who have fantastic ideas and products that have great stories behind them. The passion that these stories are delivered with and our ability as a local business to support them is one of the reasons I love what I do. How is your business contributing to the growth of the region? Norfolk Cottages continues to grow its workforce locally, opening two new offices in the last 18 months in Wells and Holt, with a further hub office in Reepham. We invest in local produce to showcase the diversity we have available, and these are placed into nearly 2500 welcome hampers for our guests. Having welcomed nearly 40,000 people to the region in the last year we are always keen to find ways we can support local businesses. In addition, we actively support local initiatives and events through sponsorship and donations as we try to make Norfolk a truly year-round destination.

Run us through a typical day for you. I am a pretty early riser with the alarm ringing at 6ish. A coffee and a bit of brekkie is taken and then I tend to head for one of our offices. I am spoilt for choice: with Holt, Holkham and Wells on the radar I am blessed with a fab drive through the Norfolk countryside from home in Dereham, typically with an eclectic playlist of tunes. Arriving at the office most mornings by 8am I spend the first part of my day planning and constructing my to do list and leaving some time for some personal development. Every day is different with my role overseeing a variety of areas of the business which is so rewarding. Spending time with my teams in marketing, recruitment operations and managed services mean that I have time to support and grow individuals and teams. Evenings typically involve a visit to the gym, a family dinner, a couple of spins on the record player and a film on the sofa! What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love to travel, both in the UK and to more distant shores. Most of our weekends are spent exploring the Norfolk coast, and spending time with family and friends. I also love a good car boot and am often looking for new additions to the music library! In addition, being an big sports fan I love watching and playing sport! Where do you like to eat and drink? Norfolk is blessed with such great produce and eateries, and I am in my element. I tend to head into Norwich to eat and drink. Our favourite place to head is Roger Hickmans on Upper St. Giles. Great food, a great wine list and great service - we have never been disappointed. I also love Brick Pizza overlooking Norwich Market, delivering an amazing choice of toppings and a great vibe! I have a real love for coffee too, and I love Strangers in the city where I watch the world go by with a top notch flat white! Can you sum up Norfolk Cottages in ive words? Innovative, local, caring, passionate, thriving. Can you sum yourself up in ive words? Competitive, fun, focused, supportive and honest. _ NORFOLK COTTAGES 6 High Street, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6BQ www.norfolkcottages.co.uk
