Looking Good!

Welcome JANUARY 2020 is finally here. All of the festive celebrations are done and the decorations can be put back up in the loft until next December. A fresh new year, with new beginnings and maybe even the odd New Year’s resolution as well. In Places&Faces this month we embrace these new beginnings by looking at how you can ‘be a better you’... but in a sustainable way, on page 63. We also look at how we can all be a bit healthier all round, even when dinning out. Elizabeth Parker suggests some great binge reads to kick off the year, and three other books which will aid us in our search for well-being and all round health. Also new this year is the addition of Tracey Wilkinson in our new beauty section on page 46. This month Tracey looks at some of the fantastic products available from the legendary Laura Mercier and reviews a bespoke facial from Therapy Inc, Norwich. Once again we are sure you will agree that there is plenty for you to read and enjoy...

THE SECOND half of the Norwich Philharmonic Society’s 2019/20 season at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich, sees an all-Russian programme in February and a choral celebration of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in March as well as a special performance of Mahler’s 3rd Symphony in the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in May. The Phil’s Russian concert on 8 February kicks off with Shostakovich’s sparkling Festive Overture and culminates in Prokofiev’s triumphal Fifth Symphony, which the composer described as ‘a hymn to free and happy Man’. Liszt Piano Competition Winner, Alexander Ullman, returns as soloist in the epic 3rd Piano Concerto of Rachmaninov, having wowed Phil audiences with his reading of the composer’s 2nd concerto two seasons ago. The year 2020 is a special year for classical music lovers as it is the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. In celebration of this major musical landmark, the Norwich Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by David Dunnett in a performance of Beethoven’s monumental Missa Solemnis on 21 March, bringing the curtain down on the season with a real flourish. Finally and exceptionally, in addition to its usual season of concerts at St Andrew’s Hall, the Norwich Phil have been invited to perform Mahler’s Symphony No.3 as part of the 2020 Norfolk & Norwich Festival on Sunday 10th May. Conducted by Matthew Andrews, the orchestra will be joined by the ladies of the Phil Chorus and the children’s voices of Norwich Cathedral Choir, and the prominent contralto role will be sung by the outstanding British mezzo, Sara Fulgoni. Concert tickets for February and March concerts are priced £11-£18 (under 26s £7) and are available from St. George’s Music Shop, Norwich www.stgeorgesmusic.co.uk, 01603 626414 or via the Norwich Phil website: www.norwichphil.org.uk

Love Light Norwich Festival

Norwich is the place to be in 2020 with some rather marvellous big new events and lots of anniversaries to celebrate says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich.

W

ith Christmas done and dusted, what’s happening in the coming months for us to look forward to? So, the party outfit is at the dry cleaners, the fridge is housing remnants of your cheese board and you’ve used every trick in the book to eat up the turkey - January can feel like a month that’s mopping up from Christmas. But I have news, like that delivered by the Fairy Godmother herself. There’s a new kid in town - an exciting, free family event taking place across Norwich during February. Love Light Norwich Festival needs to be on your cultural radar. For three days (13-15 February) this inaugural Festival will literally light up your life. Brought to Norwich by Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) with public funding from Arts Council England, expect something special, something not seen before in the city. Something inclusive for all ages, something that may even include the family dog. Intriguing? Featuring international artists as well as those closer to home the Festival will incorporate largescale installations, projections, performance, a parade, pyrotechnics and a light trail

16

following the theme of love and belonging. Don’t want to miss out? Then sign up to updates at www.lovelightnorwich.co.uk. In April another new event launches – Norwich Big Weekend (4-5 April), this time organised by VisitNorwich (part of Norwich BID). The aim of the weekend and selected dates throughout the year- is to showcase the breadth of things to see and do across the county. All tickets are free and

are open (through a ballot) to residents with a Norfolk postcode. And it’s not just about things to do in Norwich, the event will cover Norfolk. Watch this space for more details. In July - the 11th to be exact, Norwich Cathedral is the final venue for the hugely successful Dippy National Tour (11 July 31 October) which launched back in 2018. With eight venues in two and a half years, the cathedral is honoured to be the only host Bowling house, part of Norwich Big Weekend

located in the East of England and also the only cathedral on the tour. So, it’s going to be pretty, pretty special. And pretty, pretty busy! At the same time, visitors to the city can experience 20 large Tyrannosaurus-Rex sculptures on the GoGoDiscover trail. And with BREAK behind the wheel once again, we’re sure to have a fabulous time in the steps of these magnificent creatures. There’s more good news too. GoGoDiscover ends late summer but returns in 2021 this time across Norwich and Norfolk and with a few more friends along the way. Norwich may be a small city but that doesn’t stop it offering some of the richest, most exciting and diverse culture in the country. In 2020, Norwich celebrates three iconic independent cultural venues: Norwich Arts Centre turns 40 years as does Norwich Puppet Theatre and Norwich Playhouse – the baby of the family at 25. Norwich Arts Centre opened in 1977 in the Norwich Lanes. In 2014 it was named Britain’s Best Small Venue by NME. Over its 40-year history the Arts Centre has hosted names such as Oasis, Muse, Nirvana and The Stone Roses as well as a long list of nationally acclaimed comedy stalwarts including Jack Dee, Sue Perkins and Noel Fielding.

Norwich Puppet Theatre

Norwich Puppet Theatre is located in one of Norwich’s 31 medieval churches in the Cathedral Quarter and is one of only three building-based puppet theatres in the country. It’s home to a ‘family’ of puppets, some of whom have ‘lived’ there for almost the same time as its been open. The theatre provides an excellent introduction to the magic of puppetry with original shows, activities, workshops and master classes for all ages and abilities. Their touring programme has a trusted and popular national footprint, taking live professional puppet theatre all over the UK. Finally, Norwich Playhouse in the Creative Quarter of Norwich is housed in a former 19th century maltings. Seating just 300, everyone gets a great view, with the close proximity of the audience to the stage it makes you feel part of the show. It’s an intimate and very special experience. Known as a leading venue in the East for comedy, the theatre also has a strong programme of music, performance and cabaret. The theatre has a particularly busy bar famed locally for its “ceilingopolis”, a cardboard cityscape attached to the ceiling, the bar leads to a lush colourful courtyard garden located on the river Wensum. On any given night find it busy with locals – it has a reputation as a meeting place for creatives. In winter, patrons can grab a free hot water bottle to still enjoy the outdoors. visitnorwich.co.uk has a new look now incorporating our Norwich, the City of Stories blog too. For information on all these events and more, plus ideas for where to eat, shop and stay take a look at the site and sign up to our newsletter.

A NORWICH THEATRE ROYAL PANTOMIME PRODUCTION

TUE 17 DEC - SUN 19 JAN 01603 63 00 00 theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

In partnership with

Out&About

He lifted the coveted Strictly Glitterball winner’s trophy in 2008 and wowed Norwich Theatre Royal audiences in Top Hat and Crazy For You – and now Tom Chambers returns to the city’s stage in Dial M For Murder in the new year...

A

firm favourite as a song and dance man, for this show he will be playing something considerably more menacing – the villain of the piece, Tony Wendice, who plots to murder his wife. Judy Foster caught up with him to ask him about playing a charismatic but flawed charmer, his continuing love for all things Strictly, and braving chilly dips in the North Sea. You’ve been twice before to Norwich in shows known for their big musical and dance numbers. Dial M For Murder is in a very different genre – what attracted you to it? Yes, it’s a crime thriller, a gripping murder suspense story. Alfred Hitchcock is probably the best known connection to it, having made it into a film in the 50s. I am playing a husband whose wife has fallen in love with someone else and he comes up with a plot to terminate his dear wife’s life. I am sure many people are familiar with it and its many twists and turns. What drew me to it is the dialogue is so well-written it feels timeless. With the current popularity of wonderful TV series like Line of Duty and all the murder drama suspense programmes, it’s something that we as humans never cease to be interested in. When I read it, I felt like it was something I could be watching on television right now – and I just love live theatre performance. I really think it is just a brilliant piece of work. Will theatre audiences get that same sense of fear and suspense experienced when watching such a drama on screen? You could be at home and watching something on the television and you get the music, you get the sound and that can draw you in. But would you feel the same in the theatre? Well knowing how it sounds and the characters on stage, I hope that it translates completely. If you are in an auditorium and the lights go down and you are watching it, if the writing is good and it’s been welldirected and the actors are good (fingers crossed!) then it should do exactly the same thing, if not slightly greater because you are all collectively watching it at the same time. That is something you can’t replicate anywhere else. You danced and sang in Top Hat in 2011 and Crazy For You in 2017. How much of a change will this play be for you? Top Hat was a lifelong dream for me to play a Fred Astaire role and to try to emulate his dancing skills. Crazy For You was slightly more modern than the golden Hollywood of the 1930s. It was more 1950s, Gene Kellyesque. That was also a lifelong ambition to do Crazy For You because it was one of the first

bits of theatre I saw when I was 18. Dial M For Murder on the other hand is a welcome change. I did 500 performances of Top Hat and 388 performances of Crazy For You and it’s just a completely different medium to those. It requires different skills although the same sort of energy is needed with the dialogue because it is like a piece of music when it’s well-written. Dialogue should be fluid and it just joins together and it’s almost like you are listening to a piece of music, because there are the pauses, the timing, the rhythm, so it needs the same amount of concentration and focus. I felt too that I am perhaps older now, that I’ve got enough life experience to draw on. What really draws me to this is that I have been subject to scamming, to cold calling on the phone. I had a deathly cold spine-chilling moment when I realised the person on the end of the line was seeing what I was doing on my own computer. I was so shocked. You used to think you could see a ‘bit of a wide boy’ coming, but now with cyber crime you think you’ve got through to the bank, through to the broadband company, you think you are talking to the genuine product but you have to double-check. I think that is the same with this play - the audience will watch my character and not be quite sure because Tony Wendice can justify his own behaviour. Will you enjoy playing a villain? I did play a villain in Waterloo Road in 2009 as the executive headmaster of a school who was a bully. But it was very obvious that he was a bully and I thought it was something I could relate to from my own school days with teachers being a bit brash and a bit hard or bullying which no-one likes at all – but this is much deeper. The interesting thing is who do you feel sorry for? Can you understand why he would do such a thing at the time? It will be interesting to see who in the audience

might feel sorry for him and who would want to see him locked up forever. You won’t be dancing in this production but, following your huge success in winning Strictly in 2008, does the dance world still have a claim on you and do you still watch the show? Oh yes. It touches you. You can’t help but be touched by having done the experience and you know what it feels like. It used to really scare me, like a minor anaphylactic shock, when I heard that music come on and it is ‘uh-oh, it’s show-time’ and you go into flight mode. I don’t actually remember much of it mentally because when you are on the show your focus is so strong. I can only remember it by watching it back online. I can remember fragments of the show, but that’s about it. You’ve got so much code in your head – it’s not the physical, it’s the memory of what step comes next and it’s all scrutinised by the judges. But now I love watching it for the love of watching it because I have young children and I love the fact the show is ageless. It’s great nectar for five to 85-year-olds. It’s something that the whole family can watch. Are you looking forward to returning to Norwich? I absolutely love it at Norwich because I’ve had such a wonderful time there and it’s got such a great feel. I love the theatre and I like walking around Norwich. I also went to Sheringham. Doing musical theatre, I would go into ice baths afterwards because it’s very good for healing as it sends the blood to the core of the joints. So I would get in the sea up in Sheringham no matter what the time of year it was. Dial M For Murder runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from 21-25 January. www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Out&About

f post-Christmas post-

election pre-Brexit depression is taking hold of you, a musical about teenage suicide and mental health may not seem like the optimal antidote. But Dear Evan Hansen is the biggest Broadway hit to arrive in London since Hamilton and the best since Come from Away. And, although it can’t compete with the brilliance of either show, it is a bold and surprising addition to the West End. First seen on Broadway in 2016 where it won six Tony Awards and a Grammy for its cast album, Dear Evan Hansen’s songs are by Benj Pasek (sic) and Justin Paul who wrote the songs to the hit movies The Greatest Showman and La La Land (for which they won an Oscar). But it is the book by Steven Levenson which makes this original and contemporary story stand out. Evan Hansen (brilliant Sam Tutty) is a socially-awkward and possibly autistic teenager whose therapist has suggested he writes daily letters to himself as a selfsoothing exercise. One of these is nicked off him by another lonely outcast, the bullying Connor (Doug Collin). Connor kills himself. (Yes, teenager suicide is the basis of the story of a popular musical. We’re a long way from Kansas.) Connor’s parents find the letter which Evan had written to himself in their dead son’s possessions and assume it was written by him and that their problem son, after all, had a close friend. Evan goes along with it and, with the help of his friend Jared (funny Jack Loxton) writes fictional emails ‘from’ Connor demonstrating a relationship that never existed, which itself expands to a social media memorial campaign based on lies. From the seeds of a misunderstanding comes a nuanced

and complicated story about social media, public displays of distress, mental health, manipulation and grief. It is a rare musical that is not based on a pre-existing source (often novels or films, sometimes song books, occasionally albums). Very occasionally you get a musical based on a true story like Come from Away or London Road. But a musical based on an entirely original story is

removed from the show and left no absence of character or plot in what remained. The production by Michael Greif is recognizably similar to his original production of Rent – one of the cultural behemoths of the late 90s – in that it manages to be both impressively slick and deliberately messy, and both have the band placed on a platform at the back left of the stage for no obvious purpose. The set is covered in projections of websites and tweets – which of course suits the material – but as they are all unaccountably fuzzy so that little can actually be read it feels strangely unsophisticated in the world of HD and the iPhone. Nevin Steinberg’s sound design puts decibels above clarity and so in £80 seats I doubt I heard more than half of the lyrics sung all evening. Dear Evan Hansen is a good show: unarguably brave, unusual, self-confident and terrifically well-performed by a cast of mostly young West End débutantes. It is also a musical which, in ten or twenty

Dear Evan Hansen is a good show: unarguably brave, unusual, self-confident and terrifically well-performed by a cast of mostly young West End débutantes. very unusual and so the achievement of Levenson in constructing a plot which is completely contemporary, often surprising and constantly conflicted is no mean feat. It also does so with a lot of wit and humour and (for an American musical) a creditable lack of sentimentality. The dialogue zings along naturalistically, although several of the key ingredients (awkward boy speaks very fast, awkward girl wears geeky glasses) are the sort of clichés that are already over-represented in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. It may be an unpopular view but, to my ears, the songs fail to match the interest of the story. Most of them are forgettable pop-rock numbers with the exception of the bouncy “Sincerely Me”, the big anthem that closes Act One “You Will Be Found” (which fans of The Greatest Showman may feel they recogninse), and the sentimental late ballad “So Big/So Small”. The rest could have been

years, will seem to exactly capture the context in which so many millennials are currently growing up. That is no small achievement. And the audience on the night I attended was clearly loving it. Over all I was ambivalent about it, which I suppose makes me a bit of an outsider. Evan would understand. Dear Evan Hansen is now showing at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End.

LEE CHILDS

The Jack Reacher series

New year... New reads

A Jack Reacher book is bought every 13 seconds making Lee Childs one of the world’s best-selling authors. Killing Floor is the first in the series of 24 with Blue Moon being the 24th. This is a series that does not need to be read in order as the one constant is Jack Reacher himself, who is a former American military policeman who wanders the states of America. In Killing Floor Jack Reacher will live to regret the decision of going to Georgia. The only stranger in town with a mounting body count. Whereas in Blue Moon Jack Reacher’s decision to help an elderly gentleman about to be robbed on a Greyhound bus leads him to an involvement with two ruthless rival criminal gangs, one Albanian, the other Ukrainian.

January arrives with all sorts of new

resolutions and promises to ourselves and there is no reason why what we are choosing to read can’t reflect that. Elizabeth Parker selects books to give you a helping hand in making some small changes so that we can truly have a great 2020, as well as two great book series to binge read...

Alphabet mysteries: The Kinsey Millhone Series You can’t help but love these books and Kinsey Millhone. Starting with A is for Alibi and ending sadly with Y is for Yesterday. Kinsey Millhone is a police officer turned private investigator. With 25 different stories this rebellious PI with secrets of her own will keep you enthralled from A to Y. A is for Alibi starts with murder and a number of equally suspicious personalities surrounding the victim. Y is for Yesterday is the strongest and darkest of all of the books with Kinsey Millhone investigating the ten year old murder of a 14year old school boy. Sadly Grafton passed-away before she could write Z, in her memory her family have said “now the alphabet finishes with Y!”

Food Drink Breakfast

with a bang

BREAKFAST BOMBS have just hit the UK with a bang as Janine Marshall, mum of two and start-up founder, has found a quick and simple solution to the nation’s busiest meal-time. Created after Janine, a private chef, added a homemade energy ball into her blender with a splash of plant-based milk after making the mixture too dry, but not wanting to waste the ingredients, Janine realised just how simple it could be to create a nutritious smoothie without the

need for multiple bags and bottles of proteins and superfoods. And so... Breakfast Bombs were born. Each bomb is hassle and waste free and includes a healthy balanced mix of gluten free oats, plant-based protein, almond butter and a carefully curated collection of superfoods specifically designed by their in-house nutritionist Gideon Remfy, who has over 25 years’ of wellness experience. The handmade bombs, which come in an array of flavours including: Beet

& 27

& Berry, Mango Chai, Blueberry Fool, Chocolate Orange, and Matcha Mojito are designed with specific aspects of wellness and vitality in mind. The bombs focus on supporting mental and physical performance, a healthy gut, muscle, skeletal and collagen synthesis and overall increasing health-giving plant foods in the diet.

New Horizons

WILL RICHARDSON spins round the small coffee house on the quay. Shouting greetings to regulars, giving first-timers his signature smile. Until recently, his cafe operated as a branch of Greyseal Coffee, a roastery based out of Glandford, North Norfolk. Although the coffee, and barista, are staying the same, there are already noticeable differences popping up around the shop. Striking blue paint covers the walls which bear seascapes by local artist, Toby Newman. With each day I enter the shop, there is a new plant hanging precariously off a counter or ledge. On the wall where Will’s life jacket has always hung there are cards and well wishes from his family, friends and regular customers. When you manage to peel your eyes away from the model tall ship adorning the cake cabinet, you will glance up at the menu. It has grown significantly in the weeks since Will took over. In addition to Greyseal Coffee, it now boasts Born Wild Tea and Mörk specialty hot chocolate. Customers can choose how dark their hot chocolate comes, and add a flamed marshmallow on top, creating the ultimate hot decadence. Will is happy to customize any drink

with an extra shot, alternative size, or, a regular’s favourite, cinnamon sprinkled on top. “Coming here is just part of our day,” said Chris Dilks, a regular who commissions cinnamon upon each visit. “Will always makes us smile.” If you ask him, Will is more than happy to explain the history of the Australian chocolate company. He will also explain the tide system in Wells along with optimum sailing times. He can probably tell you what time to sail out of an obscure port in Greece. With a self-described “airport accent,” I had never met anyone that can out-talk me until I met this guy. He has great plans for his shop when the winter months have passed. When I walked in, he poured out a taste of his new liqueur he wants to make martinis with, another customer has volunteered to donate sharing platters for the light bite menu Will is planning. Will’s is more than a shop — it is a community. People come in for more than a cup of coffee, they come for a catch up with the cheeky barista, to make new friends, or, like me, to talk to every puppy that walks in the door. “I want it to feel like my front room,” Will said. “You never know who is going to be coming round for tea.” WILL’S OF WELLS 1 The Quay, Wells-Next-the-Sea NR23 1FA Instagram: @willsofwells

Five minutes with

Jamie Key Brasted’s regular customer

LEFT: Nick Mills (Managing Director of Brasted’s), RIGHT: Jamie Key

O

riginally from

London, we have since strayed to Norfolk and found it impossible to leave, to which I find myself a part time farmer! I regularly dart back to London for work and play. When did you first visit Brasted’s? My first visit to Brasted’s was in 1998 to the original site at Bishops Gate as an employee where I reached the dizzy heights of dishwashing apprentice. Since then I have been back many times in many guises, and these days I am blessed to be able to return on an indulgently regular basis to enjoy lunch and dinner with family and friends. Have you celebrated special occasions at Brasted’s? Often! Brasted’s is nothing if not the quintessential place to celebrate family occasions so we have returned for family birthdays and the occasional wedding, as well as parties and events at home where the ‘Complete and Utter team’ at Brasted’s create incredible events in any space. What are your favourite dishes at Brasted’s? Easy! That would have to be the Monkfish Tail and Du Brow’s DobleDoble, the latter of which needs some explaining! In short it is a roasted pheasant breast with seared livers , partridge pastrami and a hedgerow berry jus. Divine!

And your favourite Brasteds’ ‘legendary’ dessert? A much harder question... for a sweet tooth there is too much temptation! However the Aga Lager, the local treacle tart and the peach panacotta all stand out for me! Have you tried many of their fantastic wines? Do you have a favourite? It would be rude not to! The choice is excellent and they never disappoint. We recently enjoyed a sublime Chateau Musar which I can highly recommend. Very quaffable!! And what about the cheese selection? Or are you normally too full by then? Unfortunately, yes! But overindulgence is the Brasted’s way! The three course is filling but if you indulge with the fish course there will definitely be no room for cheese. Not that it isn’t tempting however! We are always impressed with how many local cheese there are on offer. A quick word please on the wonderful front of house staff ? They never disappoint, so it is no wonder they are award winning. They are always attentive but I think it is really important that they are also informed and engaging. It all goes to show the level to which they are trained and also the type of people Brasted’s chooses to employ - real foodies who are passionate about what they do.

Plus they always allow me a rendition of Chopsticks on the Brasted’s piano - a very important part of our evening! What do you think makes it such a special place to visit? Simple. It is Nick Mills and his team, they are Brasted’s encapsulated. Can you sum up the Brasted’s in five words? Decadent, meticulous, intimate, attentive and sumptuous. When is your next visit? Next year for Nicks 50th!

Tracey Wilkinson looks at the world of beauty and wellbeing... new products, new treatments, NEW YOU.

Mercier

Therapy Inc

IT IS ALWAYS

THE NEW YEAR often means a new

master-class good to discover new brands, especially at the start of a new year and I was recently invited by Jarrolds to a Laura Mercier master-class. Although its an established brand I had only experienced one of their excellent products, the Translucent loose LAURA MERCIER setting powder. Laura Mercier’s philosophy is effortless chic and a paired back look allowing natural beauty to shine through. Originally an artist Laura has been Madonna’s personal make up artist, created the J-Lo ‘glow’ and worked with Sarah Jessica Parker throughput the cult Sex and the City series. She’s the founder of Elle Beauty and is an inspiration to so many women who want to create that paired back look with extra glamour for those special nights out. The evening covered lots of her iconic products with favourites being the Radiance Primer and her Caviar Sticks for eyes. It’s a brand I’ll definitely be using in the future and adding to my mini collection I have already started.

you and time for reflection and self care. Time for yourself isn’t necessarily a treat or an indulgence... it’s a necessity. Visiting Therapy Inc in Exchange Street in Norwich reinforces this. They offer cutting edge techniques combined with Dermalogica, Jane Scrivener and Spacemasks to name a few. With over 40 years experience they offer a range of bespoke facials. I headed to their salon to experience the ProSkin 90 (£105) plus a 30 minute fusion massage melt. Hot towels, hot stones and aromatic hot oils completed a bespoke massage which was heavenly. I thoroughly recommend this treatment selection. The facial included a double cleanse, resurfacing and potent warm treatment masque with a facial reflexology massage. Christmas stresses, central heating and Norfolk’s cold biting north wind take the glow out of our skin, but this was like a ‘cashmere balaclava’ for your face. I left glowing not just for the day but saw the results continue with the resurfacing treatment continuing that glow a week later. The whole treatment using a medical but holistic route was in fact the best facial I’ve experienced, I came out literally feeling and looking like a new woman. I will definitely be incorporating parts of the facial into my daily routine, New Year, new me! Check out the website, www.therapyinc.co.uk for more details.

Skoda

KAMIQ Škoda has added a third model to its successful SUV range... The new Škoda Kamiq city SUV – the ideal companion for the modern-day urban jungle.

T

HE NEW KAMIQ

continues the successful SUV design language of the Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs, whilst the split headlights, which feature daytime running lights above the main headlights, create new, distinctive visual highlights. At 4,241 mm long, the Škoda Kamiq is considerably more compact than both of its bigger SUV siblings. Combined with its raised seat position, this means it is perfectly equipped for the modern-day urban jungle. In typical Škoda style, the Kamiq also sets benchmarks in the city SUV segment in terms of space. “The name Kamiq comes from the language of the Inuit people living in northern Canada and Greenland and means something that fits perfectly in every situation – like a second skin. The Kamiq’s name also begins with the letter K and ends in a Q, and thereby continues the homogenous nomenclature of the Škoda SUV models,” explained Alain Favey, Škoda Auto Board Member for Sales and Marketing, adding, “I am convinced that the Kamiq will make a strong debut in the dynamic, growing city SUV segment

– with its emotive design, state-of-the-art assistance systems and generous amount of space, it has everything it needs to win over a great number of new customers.” Three TSI petrol engines with cylinder capacities of 1.0 or 1.5 litre and a 1.6-litre TDI produce between 70 and 110 kW (95 to 150 PS). The 1.0 G-TEC delivers 66 kW (90 PS) and is the first engine in a Škoda SUV to run on eco-friendly natural gas (CNG). The engines can be coupled with a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG, which they all fulfil the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. The Kamiq features a newly developed chassis offering 39 mm more ground clearance than the SCALA. The Kamiq can optionally be fitted with Sport Chassis Control – a 10-mmlower sports chassis that can have its characteristics switched between Normal and Sport using Driving Mode Select. Being based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 platform, the Kamiq offers the highest level of active and passive safety. It is equipped with up to nine airbags including a driver knee airbag and side airbags in the rear, and features state-of-the-art assistance

systems as well as plenty of space. It is 4,241 mm long, 1,793 mm wide and has a height of 1,553 mm (including roof rails). Almost 80 per cent of its bodywork consists of high-strength and hot-formed steel. LED headlights and tail lights come as standard, whilst a full LED version offering AFS and dynamic front and rear indicators is optional. Standard equipment includes Lane Assist, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake and Predictive Pedestrian Protection, and MultiCollision Brake. The new Kamiq is available to test drive at Simpsons Škoda in Great Yarmouth, founded back in 1961 they have over 50 years experience and are renowned in the motortrade for their excellent customer service, so you definitely won’t be disappointed.

CX-30 Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, the CX-30 enters a new market segment for Mazda, slotting into the irm’s award-winning SUV range between the CX-3 and CX-5.

F

OLLOWING THE launch of the all-new Mazda3, the Mazda CX-30 is the second model in the company’s next generation line-up and the second to feature the ground-breaking Skyactiv-X spark-controlled compression ignition engine. Combining the bold stance of an SUV with the sleek profile of a coupe, its styling is a sophisticated evolution of Mazda’s KODO design philosophy, while it’s spacious and versatile cabin ensures it has the practicality and comfort demanded by customers in this popular sector. Available in five trim levels – SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech - the new CX-30 features Mazda’s characteristic generous standard equipment across the entire range, and is offered in the UK with a choice of two petrol engines, both of which feature the 24v Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid system. Familiar from the recently launched allnew Mazda3, the 122ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine features cylinder-deactivation and is exclusively matched to frontwheel drive with a choice of automatic or manual transmission across all five trim levels. Likewise, the ground-breaking Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) Skyactiv-X petrol engine is also offered across all grades with a choice of transmission. Additionally from Sport Lux upwards, the Skyactiv-X CX-30 is available with Mazda’s latest advanced i-Activ allwheel drive system. While Mazda is committed to diesel and the development of next-generation clean diesel engines for appropriate sectors, the abilities of Skyactiv-X and diminishing consumer demand for diesel engines in the compact SUV segment mean that in the UK the Mazda CX-30 will be exclusively petrol. The CX-30 features a generous standard equipment tally across the whole range with every car featuring a colour windscreen projecting head-up display, radar cruise

control and LED headlights to name just a few of the high-grade items found on every model. Visually, the CX-30’s sleek upper body hints at the streamlined silhouette of a coupe, while the black cladding lower down, and the CX-30’s dimensions deliver the sense of rugged stability you’d expect of an SUV. With a choice of eight exterior colours, SE-L and SE-L Lux cars feature 16-inch grey metallic wheels, while from Sport Lux onwards 18-inch wheels are standard: silver

metallic on Skyactiv-G and bright silver metallic on Skyactiv-X models. Inside, premium dark grey cloth with navy blue accents is standard, while GT Sport and GT Sport Tech models feature black leather with rich brown accents or for £200 stone coloured leather. With a high-quality, stylish and practical cabin, the Mazda CX-30’s interior sets new standards for a Mazda SUV, while the 430-litre boot ensures it’s as practical as it is desirable.

This means that every new Corsa benefits from improved performance and handling, and increased efficiency, whether it’s powered by an electric motor or conventional engine. Despite losing around ten per cent of its weight, the Corsa retains similar dimensions to the outgoing model at 4.06m with five doors as standard. The light-weight design was created using the latest virtual development methods. The specific use of various steel grades and connection methods enabled the Corsa’s significant weight reduction. This includes the consistent use of highstrength and ultra-high-strength steels, as well as the optimisation of load paths, connections, structure and form. Vauxhall engineers left no stone unturned to achieve the up to 108kg weight

loss. Contributors included body-in-white (40kg lighter), all-aluminium engines (15kg lighter), front seats (5.5kg lighter), rear seats (4.5kg lighter) and aluminium bonnet (2.4kg lighter). Compared with the current powertrains of the Corsa range, the new engines have significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions while retaining similar power outputs to the outgoing model, and with an all electric version with the Corsa-e due in showrooms soon there is definitely something for everyone. Sporting a range of new infotainment systems, drivers can enjoy relaxed driving and ultimate connectivity. The Multimedia Radio and Multimedia Navi both feature a 7-inch colour touchscreen, while the topof-the-range Multimedia Navi Pro includes an HD 10-inch colour touchscreen. Angled slightly toward the driver, each system is perfectly positioned and clearly displayed in the instrument panel. The Multimedia systems are compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and feature control via integrated voice recognition.

When using the Vauxhall Connect option impact detection activates e-Call automatically, and puts you in touch with a trained advisor in the event of an emergency or breakdown. The service operates 24/7, 365 days a year and is available from 2020 as standard on Elite and Ultimate (standard on Nav trims and on Corsa-e) models. Vauxhall Connect will also give customers access to live navigation services, regular vehicle diagnostic info plus a host of remote convenience features available through the MyVauxhall app. Thurlow Nunn, has showrooms in Fakenham and Holt where you can experience the all new Corsa first hand. This new incarnation of one of the UK’s favourite small cars is sure to impress, a vehicle which just keeps on getting better and better.

HOME? You don’t

The start of a new year is always a good time to have a rethink. From setting resolutions, to assessing your life goals - it’s also a good time to think about giving your home a refresh. Once all the Christmas decorations have been packed away your home can feel a little bare, but now is the time to declutter and reorganise rooms in your home. A good way to do this is to invest in a few simple updates – a piece of furniture, some artwork, a few accessories – that will work with existing pieces in your home to give a quick update. With the post-Christmas sales in full swing

you can give your home a revamp for less. Look for furniture that is versatile enough to have many uses such as a sofa that can turn into a day bed, accessories in neutral colours that mix materials to add texture, and add colour with green, which is neutral enough to be timeless but also fashionable enough to give a strong update. Importantly only buy the pieces you love, that way you will have them for many years to come, meaning that you will be less throwaway, perfect if being more sustainable is on your New Year’s resolutions list.

Velvet

A trend that is going to be big for 2020 on the interior design front is the use of velvet around your home.

Y

OU MAY SHUDDER

and reflect back to the red velvet curtains or sofas from the 1960s. However, times have changed and so has velvet. New modern versions of this classic fabric are on the market with a contemporary twist. Technology has moved on and with new improved production methods means that velvet is now much more user-friendly especially when it comes to cleaning, whether you choose to use it on curtains or upholstery. Velvet offers that distinctive soft feel... “smooth like velvet, how many times do we hear that phrase. When velvet was first introduced it was such a complicated and expensive process to manufacture, and was consequently, only associated with the nobility all those decades ago. With its plush, inviting, and often-varied texture, velvet offers a sensory experience and brings to mind notions of wealth, splendour and indulgence.

With its plush, inviting, and oftenvaried texture, velvet offers a sensory experience and brings to mind notions of wealth, splendour, and indulgence. Velvet is woven on a special loom that weaves two thicknesses of the material at the same time. The two pieces are then cut apart to create the pile effect, and the two lengths of fabric are wound on separate take-up rolls. The modern day process has evolved and made this fabric more affordable and does not just come in the traditional plain colours. At JHD Interiors we have a vast vibrant range incorporating all kinds of designs and patterns. Crushed velvet has been a winner over the last few years which gives a distinctive look. The fabric has a nap which points in different directions within irregular patches, often produced by mechanically twisting the fabric whilst wet. This creates such a lustrous look for curtains and upholstery. A great finishing touch to create a feeling of elegance and pure opulence. Why not allow JHD to make your home smoother! January

can be a strange month, the excitement and pressures that the festive season brings is now history and, for many of us, our thoughts turn to resolution and change. Dry January, perhaps, more exercise, definitely, less coffee and cakes... now we’re being ridiculous! When it comes to nature and, specifically, the garden then, regardless of any plans we may have for change, the constancy of the seasons always dictates how much and when this can be done. In fact, this is the appeal of gardening for many people – the pattern and the rhythm that nature brings, when perhaps other aspects of our lives are in turmoil or just not quite where it should be! So, losing yourself in the garden, whether physically outside or just planning what you wish to achieve throughout the year, is a great way to start 2020! The most immediate task is, of course, what to do with the Christmas tree! If you bought a tree that has been grown in a container or potted with its roots intact then this can be replanted in your garden or a bigger pot. Not only is this an environmentally friendly way to recycle your Christmas tree but it also means that next year, you can bring it inside and enjoy decorating it all over again. You do need to be a little careful though as going from a centrally heated house straight out into the cold can be a bit of a shock for the poor thing. It’s best to acclimatise the tree by keeping it in cool conditions for a while e.g. a garage, then planting it out in Spring. Don’t forget to water it whilst it’s in its temporary home! If you bought a cut tree then this can be recycled by chopping it up and putting it in your garden waste bin or taking it to a local recycling facility. Check your local council’s

Christmas tree recycling scheme by visiting their website – most will offer a local drop off or collection point for unwanted trees. Of course, if you were lucky enough to have garden shredder for Christmas then this can be used to mulch! Once this reminder of the festivities has been removed then you can focus on the real task in hand – planning the garden for

Importantly, don’t forget our feathered friends for whom winter is a difficult time. Check your bird feeders regularly and make sure that water isn’t frozen, they need this too. the year ahead. The keen or experienced gardener will already be ahead of the game, having planted bulbs, shrubs and some vegetables in the Autumn or early Winter, all part of the annual planning process. However, you can still get away with planting tulips and perhaps daffodils in January with some success if the weather conditions allow it. It is also a good time to plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soil isn’t frozen – if you can’t dig you can’t plant! Vegetables are a little trickier but you can sow broad beans in pots in mild areas, placing them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and, of course, you can always

sow seed indoors for early crops, for example, lettuces, summer brassicas (e.g. cabbages and cauliflowers), spinach, salad onions and turnips. As previously stated, physically getting outside in the garden, even if it is cold and damp, can be uplifting for the soul and there are numerous jobs that can be done to keep you warm, just one example being the pruning of fruit trees such as apples and pears along with fruit bushes like currants, gooseberries and autumn raspberries. Importantly, don’t forget our feathered friends for whom winter is a difficult time. Check your bird feeders regularly and make sure that water isn’t frozen, they need this too. But, above all, it is just good to maintain contact with your garden – take the opportunity to read those gardening books you were given for Christmas and get your inspirational juices flowing!

Life Living Set your

sights Rachel Gilbert looks at a sustainable way to approach self-care and improvement in the new year I HATE THE cliche of “new year, new me” — there should be no time restrictions on self-care and improvement. My family has a tradition of reading our new year’s resolutions aloud and grading ourselves with a resounding groan or enthusiastic clap. However, a few years ago, I realized how stressful this made the process. Each year I felt like I had to set some bigger, loftier goal that ultimately filled me with a distinct lack of enthusiasm and dread.

Do little things that will help you stay organised and keep you happy. This can be the smallest thing - any job that takes less than 5 minutes to do isn’t worth delaying.

& 63

Rather than cripple myself with some outrageous fitness, weight or academic goal, 2019 was the year I set myself simple tasks; register with a dentist, open a “grown-up” savings account, fix ‘bits and bobs’ on my car. Chores I knew I had been delaying but maybe I needed a nudging reminder to get the task underway. A few years ago, I lost the weight and did the fitness challenges, a 5k, a half marathon, a triathlon, it keeps escalating. This journey, however, has taught me so much more than the difference between road and TT bikes (it’s an addiction, don’t start a bike collection), and has influenced how I will approach this decade; setting simple, realistic tasks that will make me happy and keep me healthy. Creating positive habits and finding a mental balance can help your journey towards bigger goals, and here’s how you can do that.

START SMALL Write a list of things you would like to incorporate into your daily routine. Developing positive habits helped me centre myself when I was experiencing tough times this year. My dad gifted me the “5 Minute Journal,” to express daily gratitude for the little things. Each morning

I write down three things I am thankful for, and three things I would like to achieve that day. At the end of each day, I record three successes and one thing I could have improved upon. This tiny addition to my day made me appreciate the challenges presented on different days, and put things into perspective.

MY TOP TOOLS 5 MINUTE JOURNAL So quick and easy, but genuinely life changing.

HEADSPACE APP This is a meditation and mindfulness app, set aside 5 minutes a day to just breathe.

“RUN FAST, EAT SLOW” Ok, this one is personal to me as a runner but is full of quick, delicious, healthy recipes. Get yourself a book you enjoy cooking from, and eating healthy won’t be a chore. 64

Maybe ‘20 is your year to try something completely new or different. New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be a chore, do something that will make you happy. Try learning a new language or going to a class — your local library will undoubtedly host a book club or discussion group. This is a great way to get out and learn something new. Another option could be a yoga or pilates class, a great way to improve your fitness and clear your mind. Take a trip to your local garden centre and test your green fingers. This year I became a mother to several plants. My herb garden encouraged me to experiment more with my cooking, and I was able to bring homegrown rosemary to garnish drinks at work. I have never been able to keep plants alive before, but some of them are still thriving in December.

LEARN FROM FAILURE

Sometimes my goal is to make it out of bed and get some fresh air, others it is to get out and ride 50 miles on my bike, and each is perfectly acceptable. Each day presents new start and finish lines. I can’t recommend this practice enough — it helps get you into the mindset of planning and achieving each and every day, not just a few days at the start of the year.

CONSIDER SOMETHING BIGGER When you have settled into a routine and feel you are ready to tackle a bigger challenge, start writing out your goals. I like to process these using the SMART method — Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time related. This process will set you up for success, regardless if your goal is for work, fitness or otherwise related challenges.

Sometimes things don’t work out and that is ok, failure is just a fun roller coaster on the way to success. We learn something each time we make a mistake, whether or not we realize it at the time. When I sit down with my family to be graded on my resolution success rate, I will receive a resounding zero because none of the goals have been entirely completed. If you ask me, however, 2019 was a year of growth and ever-developing goals. To analyse success based on a promise made 12 months earlier is unfair — circumstances change and so do people. Everything happens for a reason, and even if it hurts at the time, you are growing as a person. Although I fell short of what was written on a scrap of paper 12 months ago, I developed and reached different targets. Maybe next year I can tick off last year’s resolutions!

DON’T SETTLE Completing a goal is the greatest feeling, be sure to celebrate, but don’t stop adapting and looking for the next step. When you accomplish something, start reaching for the next step — how to run faster, test your new language skills, or gain another promotion at work. Remember, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again!

Life&Living

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Time to create positive habits Do little things that will help you stay organised and keep you happy. This can be the smallest thing — any job that takes less than 5 minutes to do isn’t worth delaying. • Make your bed each morning nothing is more relaxing than climbing into a tidy bed at the end of the day. • Eat at the table - I used to eat in front of the TV, but taking the time to sit at the table makes the meal that much better even if I am alone. If you aren’t dining alone, talk to your partner, not a screen! • Put your dishes away - I have a bad habit of leaving my dishes on the draining board for days. It only takes two minutes and it is so satisfying to have spotless surfaces. • Leave your tech downstairs - Ok, this one is a work in progress for me, I switch my phone to “Do not disturb,” at least half an hour before bed and read a book instead. I get to catch up on Harry Potter, and I sleep more soundly, win-win!

Help others on their road to success Random acts of kindness will boost your friends and your mood. • Send a card - my friends and I like to send each other notes of appreciation. You shouldn’t need an occasion to remind someone you care about them. • Volunteer - see how you can get involved with your community, help a friend with their business or litter pick at a local green space. • General support - Make your coworker a cup of tea, support them in their goals and work as a team. It will bring you closer, setting everyone up for success.

By making the facility completely accessible and providing a long list of available activities, a vast number of people are able to enjoy Sportspark. “Sportspark is passionate about providing an inclusive, accessible and inspiring facility for all members of the community, regardless of age, ability or gender,” said Phil Steele, Director of Sport and Commercial Services at UEA. There is a huge array of programmes on offer to anybody, ranging from students, elderly people and professional athletes based in the Norfolk area. One of their customer service mottos is, “all day every day for the community.” Memberships start from just £5 a month and range to £40 per month for an all inclusive, unlimited membership. Or, in case you need a little extra nudge, you can take out a joint membership with a family member or friend. Sometimes, these fitness endeavours are much more fun when you have a familiar face putting in the work next to you. Two of the flagship programs at

Sportspark are the Norfolk Sports Academy and its collaboration with UEA teams. The NSA supports elite level athletes on their journey to international success. UEA sports have been recognised for their achievements and the facility has been ranked top six in the nation.

Sportspark is passionate about providing an inclusive, accessible and inspiring facility for all members of the community, regardless of age, ability or gender... Sportspark is truly the place to watch and learn from the best! Whether you are a morning early bird or a night owl, Sportspark will welcome you. The facility opens its doors at 6:30 am and will let you get your sweat on until 10:20 pm “We pride ourselves in the fact

we have facilities to cater for all,” said Georgia Dawson, Marketing and Communications Administrator at Sportspark. When you have finished your workout, there is no need to head straight home hungry, there is a full dining facility on site so you can immediately refuel. There are options for everyone, vegetarian, gluten free, a children’s menu — no need to worry about dinner after a long day and workout. This year is a big one for Sportspark with a 20th birthday to celebrate. The number isn’t slowing the facility down, rather it is planning to host 20 events to reinvigorate its mission, and launch some new initiatives for the future. Activities include month long charity events, open days, games and celebrations. The year will be kicked off with two events in January, “Sports science after 6,” and and an archive exhibition. February will feature a roller disco in support of “This Girl Can,” an initiative designed to get more women and girls involved in sports and physical activity. Other charities supported include a Starlight Walk, a Help for Heroes sports series and Movember, in aid of prostate cancer awareness. The celebrations are designed to set in motion the plans for Sportspark over the next ten years: broadening participation, improving well-being and supporting the community. Said Georgia: “We look forward to celebrating the year with our existing Sportspark users as well as welcoming in new members of the community.”

Not to mention the fact there is so much choice available now, there is a style to suit everyone; from subtle and smart to more outlandish and fashionable. be easily relieved with treatment by a podiatrist. Unfortunately, if you ignore discomfort in your feet, it can quickly escalate and become a much bigger problem. Foot pain will also affect the way you walk, which can in turn cause issues in knees legs and hips. We treat people every day with corns, callus (hard skin), verrucae, fungal infections, in-grown nails, pains associated with walking- in fact any issue you might have with your feet.

Do I need to visit a podiatrist regularly, or will it be a one-off appointment? It really depends on what the issue is. Some people may only need one appointment, for instance to relieve the discomfort of an in-grown toenail, others may need a longer course of treatment. Your podiatrist will advise you during your assessment. Anyone suffering with diabetes really ought to see a podiatrist on a regular basis as subtle changes to the circulation and nerve supply of the foot can be picked up by a podiatrist, before real permanent damage is done. As we grow older and less mobile, taking care of our feet and nails becomes more difficult. A lot of our patients like to come on a regular basis in order to keep their feet in the best condition. We firmly believe prevention is much better than cure after all.

Firstly Karen, what exactly is a podiatrist? Is it the same as a chiropodist? A podiatrist is a foot specialist, treating people suffering with common problems affecting the feet and lower limbs. People often ask what the difference is between a podiatrist and a chiropodist – Podiatry is just the new name for the professional qualification. All our podiatrists have spent three years training at university for their degree, as well as further training in specialist techniques. Why would I need to visit a podiatrist? Any discomfort in your feet can really affect day to day living and mostly can 75

Britain

With an estimated two thirds of UK adults being either overweight or obese, Helen Harper of Spire Norwich Hospital catches up with Consultant General Surgeons Mr Michael Lewis and Mr Vivek Chitre to weigh up the options available to Norfolk patients.

W

ith

global warming causing rising sea levels the island we all live on is getting smaller – sadly the same can’t be said of its inhabitants. There are now more than twice as many people who are dangerously obese than there were in the 1960’s. Why is this? Of course lifestyles have changed in the past 50 years – we use cars much more to get around and there are fewer manual jobs. Farming is ever more mechanised and modern careers often involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer for prolonged periods. Add to this the continued growth of fast food outlets offering relatively inexpensive high calorie food. It is no great surprise that this combination has led to many people eating more calories than they burn – the end result is weight gain. Mike Lewis, Consultant General Surgeon at Spire Norwich Hospital comments. “Weight loss surgery should not be considered an easy option. We try to discourage those looking for a ‘quick fix’ because they will invariably be disappointed. Patient compliance and ‘buy in’ are critical for good results and those who think a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric band is a ‘magic cure’ often do less well than more motivated patients with realistic expectations. We rightly offer surgery for medical reasons only and patient eligibility is assessed in line with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines”. Mr Lewis continues, “Norfolk may be considered a healthy rural area to live and work but in recent years the number of weight loss operations being performed in Norwich has been rising steadily year on year. This may be partly due to greater awareness of obesity surgery in both the general population and primary care”. One way to lose weight is to reduce the amount one eats. There are startling successes from dieting, they appear every week in both women’s and men’s magazines. However, we rarely hear what happens to these dieters in the long run.

The British Medical Journal revealed that almost all dieters put weight back on and many end up ‘yo-yo’ dieting. The problem is that if a person feels permanently hungry and there is food available, it is extremely difficult to resist temptation forever.

Weight loss surgery should not be considered an easy option. NICE recognise the vast nature of this problem and recommends surgery for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35, providing they have tried other ways of losing weight. Mr Vivek Chitre, Consultant General Surgeon explains why it’s dangerous to have a BMI greater than 35; “The risks of dying are five or more times greater than somebody of the same age whose BMI is less than 25. The more your BMI climbs above 35, the greater the health risks. Many common conditions are directly related to obesity. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, heartburn and reflux, gallstones, cancer, stress incontinence and depression. Life expectancy is also heavily linked to weight”. 77

Mr Chitre continues “There are several types of operation available with varying degrees of impact in terms of weight loss and life style changes. The most common procedure is the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. The band is placed through a keyhole (laparoscopic) operation under a general anaesthetic with a stay of 12–24 hours in hospital. A sleeve gastrectomy is a bigger operation with a longer recovery period requiring a one or two night stay in hospital. Finally a laparoscopic gastric bypass is the largest operation and is usually reserved for people with severe health and weight problems. The best results from surgery are obtained if a good follow-up process is in place. It makes sense that your surgeon and the team who care for you are nearby. Overseas travel is not recommended as complications can exist following any surgery and being thousands of miles from your surgeon is never wise”. So what does success look like? Mr Lewis and Mr Chitre explain; “Success is usually measured by the amount of Excess Weight Loss (EWL). A laparoscopic gastric band will give on average a 50% EWL: our results in Norwich show an EWL of 60% two years after surgery. The weight does not come off immediately after surgery; and the amount lost does vary quite considerably from person to person. Of course, if patients have a laparoscopic gastric band, but neglect their aftercare and band adjustments, weight loss may be disappointing”. For further information regarding consultant general surgeon’s Mr Michael Lewis and Mr Vivek Chitre visit www.spirenorwich.com and ‘click’ on their consultant profile. Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...

AB

LE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for near ly four decades and now provides live -in Care Services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alte rnative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably lead s to either at the time of an assessm ent or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of cris is, about specific factors can be diffi cult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regu lar basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information . Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: I want to buy a ramp in order that when I have disabled visitors in wheelchairs they can more easily get into my home. Where can I purchase one from? Answer: There are several companies

which sell portable ramps but if you take a look at The Ramp People at www.theramppeople.co.uk you will in addition to seeing the prices gain an idea of how to measure, portability, with or without a storage case, etc. Then, you can make a comparison with other retailers.

Question: I live alone and have no relatives in this country. I am in my 80’s and would like someone to help me with information about decisions I have to make about any care support I might need, to help give me information, explain the consequences of my choices, etc. so I can make decisions for myself knowing the facts. Where can I get such help? Answer: Your local council must

provide or direct you to an advocate for several reasons including where a person needs to understand the pros and cons of different care options. An advocate will be independent and will make sure your ‘voice’ is heard and will offer advice and support to you Call your local Social Services to start the process. Question: What is a Personal Welfare LPA? Answer: A Personal welfare LPA

(Lasting Power of Attorney) gives your chosen attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine (washing, dressing, eating), medical care, moving into a care home and life-sustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you’re unable to make your own decisions. 79

Question: When is the law in England changing with reference to organ donation? Answer: From spring 2020, organ

donation in England will move to an ‘opt out’ system. (You may also hear it referred to as ‘Max and Keira’s Law)’. This means that all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. For further details, including changes in Wales and Scotland, visit: www.organdonation.nhs.uk helping you to decide. Question: Are there any charities which still accept used postage stamps? Answer: UK organisations that

still use stamps to raise money include Oxfam, Macmillan, Parkinson’s UK and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). ABLE COMMUNITY CARE LTD T: 01603 764567 E: info@ablecommunitycare.com

FINANCIAL PLANNING Carl Lamb

Chartered Financial Planner

www.smith-pinching.co.uk

T

here is an ancient

Chinese curse that says “may you live in interesting times” – and we have undoubtedly been experiencing that in the last few years. Brexit uncertainty and troubled global markets have made many people nervous about their future financial security. One of the biggest challenges for the investor is to understand what the impact of changing markets will have on your future finances and what action may be required to make sure you can sustain your desired lifestyle in the long term. Financial planning is all about working out what is important to you at different stages of your life and putting the right measures in place to fulfil your aspirations. That’s not to say that absolutely anything is achievable: planning is about taking into account what you can afford to invest, what’s essential to your future wellbeing and what you want to achieve. It’s about reaching a delicate balance where your finances are tax-efficient, seeing growth and mitigating risk.

Did you and your family discuss financial matters over the Christmas period? Carl Lamb, Chartered Financial Planner at Smith & Pinching, looks at the benefits of financial planning. An independent financial adviser will have the skills, knowledge and tools to help you map out your financial journey, setting milestones at significant points in your life and building in flexibility for all those “what if…” scenarios. We use lifetime cashflow planning to project your financial position at different times under different circumstances so that you can understand what adjustments you may need to make to your planning if things change either in your life or in the wider financial market. Financial advisers are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Independent financial advisers will look at your complete financial circumstances and make recommendations from the whole of the financial marketplace, if changes are needed. The Gold Standard for financial advice is Chartered status: both firms and individuals can be Chartered and if a firm or an individual is Chartered, it demonstrates both a high standard of qualification and the commitment to a professional code of ethics.

Your financial plan should never be static – it must adapt to change. Keeping your planning under review is critical if you are to stay ahead of the curve. Your circumstances will change over the years, so it is essential that you adjust your plan accordingly. We recommend reviewing your plan at least once a year. Your investment portfolio should be tailored to your own specific circumstances, so an independent financial adviser will take great care to find out all about you, your investment risk profile and your investment objectives before making a recommendation. Reviewing the content of your investment portfolio is another important element of your planning. You can do this with your adviser at your annual review but ideally it will be more frequent. Portfolio management is a service where you authorise an investment specialist to adjust the content of your portfolio on a regular basis as markets change. At Smith & Pinching, we include portfolio management as an integral part of our financial planning service. Whatever stage you are at in your life, now is a good time to start planning. As another ancient Chinese saying goes “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and are not advice. Any solution described may not be suitable for everyone. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may get back less than the amount invested.

Smith & Pinching are Chartered Financial Planners. If you would like a no-cost exploratory review to discuss your inancial planning with an adviser, call us today on 01603 789966 or email enquiries@smith-pinching.co.uk

we have tried to introduce different food ideas, but they have not always been met with total satisfaction. So, we keep to doing traditional pub food. We use our local butcher and try and keep our menu in line with the seasons.

A

cle Bridge Inn is a

family run business situated in a beautiful riverside location in Norfolk where children, dogs and muddy boots are welcome... Tell us a little about how it all started for you at the Acle Bridge Inn? Phil and I came on board in 2007, we were looking for a new challenge within the industry as we had both been in catering in different concepts. This was a very different location to anything we had done previously. In June 2007 we hit the floor running, as their season was already in mid flow. We literally took each day as it came and got a feel for the business and tried to work out what customers were looking for within that environment. We just kept our heads above water for the first few months and had many challenging days. With the addition on having the broads on our doorstep brought with it, newer obstacles. Come towards the end of October, the end of the holiday season, the business fell off the cliff. Phil and I realised that the community had long since visited the pub, and once we realised that we put a plan into action. We addressed the menu and it was clearly obvious that customers wanted homecooked real pub food. Over the years of working within the industry from mid 80s, we realised that the needs of the customers have changed, and we identified that and put our plan into action. Once upon a time a customer would return to your business if they had a nice meal but didn’t receive good service or vice versa. It is important to tick all boxes when it comes to a customer’s needs. The bottom line is you have to love what you do and the customers will love you for it, because everything falls into line. Hospitality is something that we both feel very passionate about. We like people to feel like they are in their own homes when they are in our pub.

Directors of Acle Bridge

After identifying all the needs of the customers we worked hard at delivering all day every day. By now we were evolving, and our team was growing and we were creating a family with all of our staff. Nearly thirteen years on we have evolved and evolved and evolved... we have listened and reacted to our customers and we never get complacent. The Acle Bridge Inn has an incredible location, what does it mean to you? Our location means to us that we look after all varieties of the public. We have holiday makers and regulars, all because they like to see the boats go by on the river. They like to sit in our extensive garden with the play area. Our location is advantageous, for those who live in the city a 15 minute drive and they are out in the country. As we come to the end of 2019 please can you pick out two highlights of the year for you? Two important highlights of the year... to be voted in the most dog friendly pub in the whole of east Anglia, and reaching 6000 likes on our facebook page. What makes the Acle Bridge Inn special for your customers? What makes the Acle Bridge Inn special for our customers is that we are all things to all people. So, if you want to bring your dog along you can. If you want somewhere to bring your children, there is a play area. There is an extensive car park. Most importantly is the hospitality we give to all our customers all day every day. Tell us about your menu? Our menu, at first glance you may think our menu is like any other pub menu as we provide all the traditional pub favourites, fish and chips, steak and ale pie etc. But it is not until you get them you realise they are that little bit more special. More than you would get at home. Over the years

Do you have a signature dish? Signature dish must be our Fish Pie, it is proved to be the most popular recipe that we provide. Tell us about your team and what makes them special? We have been blessed with the staff that we have employed over the years. We currently have six members of staff that been with us 10 years plus. Our staff have the same motivation to deliver hospitality on every level. We have had some absolute gems over the years, we have had younger members working in their holidays that have gone onto uni and are now all grown up. We have many characters, we have had members of staff who got married, we have become aunties loads of times to staff that have had babies. We have sadly said goodbye to a few members of staff that have gone onto different things. What happens in a typical day at the Acle Bridge Inn? We never know what will happen from day to day, when we open the doors... every day is different. Tell us about your customers, who are they and where do they come from? Our customers are from far and wide, there are people who come on a daily basis, to people who are holiday makers that come from all over the UK and abroad. There are our regulars who come from many of the surrounding villages. We have regular society groups, MG club and book clubs. Our customers are generally people who are here to celebrate the future, present and the past. We laughingly say our customers are 0-100. You have picked out highlights from 2019, what are your aims for 2020? 2020 aims... we would like to put our new outdoor project into place for summer 2020, which will mean additional amenities to those on holiday and live locally. Our aim is to continue do to what we do.

Business Development Manager at Park Farm Hotel & Leisure

A

world away from the

hustle and bustle of every day life, Park Farm Hotel and Leisure is a blissful retreat set in 200 acres of idyllic countryside, a few miles outside the historic, beautifully vibrant city of Norwich. The hotel is in a beautiful building, what’s its history ? The original Georgian farmhouse was once a dairy farm and was purchased by the Gowing family in 1958, it then produced eggs for the local area, supplying many local businesses. The Gowing family still own and operate Park Farm Hotel to this today. As we come to the end of 2019 can you pick out two highlights of the year? For nearly 20 years we had the pleasure of Richard Bond as our General Manager. He decided to retire in September following over 45 years in the hospitality industry. We wish him well and know he needs the extra time to brush up on his golf game. This saw us welcoming two managers to oversee the day to day operations of the hotel. Ed Chapman who has over 30 years of hospitality experience. Also Nicky Bishop who is part of the Gowing family and continues the strong family influence the hotel is so proud of. 86

You have picked out highlights from 2019 – what are your aims for 2020? 2020 will see the hotel open its brand new wedding venue The Colney Suite. Completely remodelled, rebranded and refurbished this space will delight anyone looking to tie the knot following its April 2020 launch. Milestone birthdays, anniversaries and any other event you can think of The Colney Suite is sure to delight. Can you tell us what makes Park Farm so unique? One of the things that makes us most unique is our independence and the fact we are still owned by the Gowing family. The family are still actively involved with the development of the hotel and really care and value the hotels visitors. Tell us about your dining options? Dining with us truly is a taste sensation. Our renowned Seasons Restaurant is the pinnacle of culinary excellence serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to the AA Rosette standard. Or join us in Helene’s Lounge Bar for a more relaxed eating experience where you can also treat yourself to an elegant, quintessentially English Afternoon Tea.

Do you have a favourite dish? Our executive chef David Bell simply loves the spring when lamb comes back in season. His signature lamb rump dish is always a treat for me when it is back on the menu... Pan fried lamb rump cooked with rosemary, fondant potato, local asparagus, slow roasted plum tomatoes finished with a redcurrant Jus. Please tell us about your wedding facilities, we understand that they will grow again in 2020? Continuing the hotels ongoing development program we are completely re-imagining our wedding venue, The Colney Suite. Renovations will take place between January and March 2020, with a more neutral colour scheme and country house theme sure to prove popular with those of you tying the knot next Spring and beyond. This is not going to be a simple lick of paint. Expect big things when this beautiful new space opens its doors for the first time. Has a particular wedding stuck in your mind? We had a wedding at the hotel that had some special visitors, waiting to surprise the guests after the ceremony were a couple of storm troopers, R2 D2, Darth Vader and other notable star wars characters. Can you sum up Park Farm Country Hotel & Leisure in five words? Progressive, idyllic, luxurious, hospitable, meticulous.

T

oll Barn Vets

is a family run independent practice offering high quality care for pets and exotic animals. Purpose built in 2014 we are an Accredited Gold Standard Cat and Rabbit friendly practice and also offer a luxury boarding hotel for cats and rabbits. The surgery has been growing in recent years, please can you tell us about these major developments and what has driven you forward? When we first opened our doors in 2014 we were a team of two Vets, two Nurses and one Practice Manager (also my mum!) and are proud that with our clients support we have now grown to now be a team of four Vets, nine Nurses, one Student Nurse and our Practice Manager (also still my mum!). Our driving force has always been our passion to provide the highest possible standard of care for our patients at an affordable price, and to minimise the patient stress caused by the need for referral to other veterinary centres by providing as many skills and facilities in-house as possible. Supporting this, we provide our own on-site 24/7 emergency out-of-hour service so we can ensure our clients see a familiar face with their pets records at hand during these stressful situations. Recent developments include the addition of a Laser Therapy unit which is already proving hugely beneficial as a “nonmedication based way of providing pain relief and encouraging tissue healing for patients with many conditions including osteoarthritis, wounds and spinal pain, and this has perfectly complemented our inhouse Physiotherapy. One of our proudest additions is our on-site CT scanner which enables us to produce detailed 3D images of pets enabling us to diagnose and determine the optimal treatment for conditions such as elbow dysplasia, nasal disease, lung and heart diseases, ear disease, spinal disease and tumours. The introduction of our on-site luxury pet hotel caring for cats and rabbits has also proved immensely popular and gives owners peace of mind knowing their pets are in safe hands being cared for by vets and nurses whilst they are away. You have a fascinating job, please tell us about some of your more unusual patients?

Where to start! Whatever the pet, every dog, cat or rabbit is special to us, but as a practice which also offers a referral service for Exotic pets and we are proud to be able to treat a huge variety of species! I guess some of the more memorable ones would be a two metre long Alligator on which we performed blood tests, ultrasound scans and a CT scan; several monkeys with varying medical and surgical conditions; and 40-60kg Leopard Tortoises! Never a dull day and every day brings something different to keep us on our toes. Do you have a specialism in a particular type of animal? We are proud to have a vet who is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Accredited Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine, and this enables us to treat a huge variety of species including reptiles, birds, zoo collections, small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs and fish. We are also proud to offer other veterinary surgeons a referral service in Exotic pets as we understand their treatment can require specialised equipment and knowledge. Our referral services also include a CT scanning referral service and a Laser Therapy referral service. As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly and Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice we are also proud of the high level of care and facilities we can provide. We wish there was a Dog Friendly Accreditation as we would love to apply for that award too! What are your plans for 2020? Our primary aim for 2020 is to continue the affordable high quality healthcare and welfare we provide to our patients and clients. Aside from this we have plans for some exciting additions to our facilities and services but you will have to watch this space for more details!

Please talk us through your team and what makes them special? We are incredibly proud to have a truly talented team – within our team we have four highly qualified Veterinary Surgeons all with particular interests and skills including Exotic pet care, Dentistry, Surgery and Internal Medicine, and including European Certificates in Zoological Medicine and Small Animal Surgery. Our Nursing Team is equally talented with many of them undertake additional qualifications and have particular interests in Anaesthesia, Exotic pet care, Physiotherapy, Feline Behaviour and Medicine and much, much more! The best aspect of our team is that they truly care about providing the highest level of care for our inpatients and our clients and nothing is ever too much trouble for them when it comes to patient care. How has the treatment of animals evolved in the last five years? The treatment of animals has evolved dramatically in the last 5 years. In response we are able to offer a wider and more thorough range of in-house diagnosis and treatments including easier access to affordable CT scans, Laser therapy as a method of medication free pain relief together with anti-inflammatory and more effective chemotherapy techniques, and a vastly improved knowledge of a huge number of conditions. There has been recognition that rabbits and cats in particular benefit from different hospitalisation wards and facilities and this has guided our purpose built hospital wards. The onset of Platelet regeneration therapy (similar to stem cell therapy and of particular benefit to patients with osteoarthritis and tendon injuries) has markedly improved the quality of life of a lot of our patients and is just the tip of the iceberg as far as stem cell therapies go. How do you see things evolving in the next five years? I believe there will continue to be advances in the treatment options and diagnostic techniques we can offer our patients, and Toll Barn Vets is firmly committed to staying at the forefront of these techniques and offering them to our clients to help our patients live long and healthy lives.

Director of Barefoot Retreats

H

ere at

Barefoot Retreats we offer our guests a luxury boutique hotel experience within the privacy and freedom of selfcatering properties. I own the business and have always and will always be very hands on within the business itself too. I have an exceptional team who work above and beyond ensuring Barefoot Retreats is the best it can possibly be – I’m never afraid to get stuck into any department and firmly believe that my staff lead by example. How does the Barefoot Retreats make a difference to people’s lives? All the properties on our portfolio are exclusively with ourselves. We give our guests the chance to stay in some of the most unique and amazing homes within North Norfolk. We also offer an exclusive concierge service. The team are always available to help with any request, tailoring the guest’s stay down to the finest of details and ensuring their holiday is absolutely one to remember. Tell us a little about some of the highlights both personal and professional for you in 2019? A highlight of 2019, how do you even pick one? I think overall for Barefoot Norfolk its been a year of real positives, we’ve beaten all our targets, welcomed many new guests and properties and I’m just so excited for what the future holds for the business.

Could you tell us a little bit more about the types of properties Barefoot Retreats manages? At Barefoot Retreats we differentiate ourselves from our competitors by offering a luxury standard of property. We offer a fully managed servicet to take care of every aspect of the property; the cleaning, linen, garden – you name it, we look after it! We also provide all of our guests with a welcome hamper, robes & slippers for all adults and luxury toiletries in all bathrooms, its these little touches that often set us apart. And what exciting plans does the business have for 2020? For 2020, we’ve set ourselves even bigger targets but we’re confident that they’re certainly achievable. Ultimately, we want to keep doing what we’re doing, but continuing to grow at a pace that enables us to do it as well, if not better than we are already. What do you think makes Barefoot Retreats unique in it’s field? As I’ve mentioned above, we only offer a fully managed service so we’re always on hand to help any day of the week should our guests need us. All of our properties are unique to ourselves, so you won’t find them with anyone else. Our reservations team are all from North Norfolk which I’ve always felt is really important. They know the areas, all the properties, all the restaurants

which enables them to give their true opinion when a guest is searching for that perfect retreat. What is your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement of course has to be owning Barefoot Norfolk Ltd. Barefoot Retreats has a sister company; Barefoot Living which is a luxury homewares store in the heart of Burnham Market. Both businesses compliment one another and its great for me that no two days are the same! Can you sum up Barefoot Retreats in five words? Barefoot Retreats is; a luxury everexpanding holiday letting agency with an incredibly exciting future (potentially more than five!). Can you sum yourself up in five words? I am a driven, outgoing, independent woman who couldn’t be prouder of the exceptional team and business that I have.

2020 Vision

Phil Steele Director of Sport & Commercial Services at the University of East Anglia

I

’ve been

working at UEA now since May 2012 and very aware of the standout services that we have been able to offer to the local and campus communities for the last 19 years. The Sportspark facility has been somewhat of a blueprint for other university sports facility developments but our strong link to the local population of Norwich and Norfolk is still what makes us unique against others across the country. How does the Sportspark make a difference to people’s lives? The Sportspark welcomes all members of the community and provides the opportunity to exercise and stay healthy whilst also offering the chance to meet new people and try new activities, this not only helps peoples physical wellbeing but mental wellbeing too. Tell us a little about some of the highlights both personal and professional for you in 2019? My role that was solely focused on sport has evolved and I’m now proud to be supporting each of the commercial operations on campus. We have been focussed on how we can continue to improve the services and activities on offer – to be scored as the best quality sports and leisure centre operation in the UK was a highlight for sure but its spurred us on to do bigger and better things moving forward. This reaffirmed how our new strategy was shaping up and meant we

90

could launch this with the confidence in how we play our part in helping with health and wellbeing initiatives for campus and the wider community. On a personal note the job change means I certainly have a challenge ahead but one that I am looking forward to and that will make 2020 an exciting year for me. It’s your 20th anniversary - what exciting things do you have planned? Our 20th anniversary is approaching in 2020 and to celebrate we are hosting 20 events throughout the year. These events will include a range of exciting open days and family fun days, the Norwich Starlight Walk in aid of Macmillan, UEA’s summer graduation and the BUCS Conference Cup. We look forward to celebrating our 20th anniversary with our Sportspark users and welcoming in new members of the community. Tell our readers a little bit more about the different types of people who use the Sportspark? Sportspark pride ourselves in the fact we have facilities to cater for all. We are dedicated to providing outstanding sporting facilities for the community; we are also home to UEA sport and welcome many students through the doors each year. We welcome users of all ages and offer a range of sports and activities such as preschool gymnastics, our popular fitness in later life (FILL) programme, junior and adults sports courses and our family fun pool sessions to name a few. We also offer our Inclusive Club that welcomes people with disabilities and their carers to try a wide range of different sporting activities. What is your proudest achievement? I have a few and it’s hard to nail just one, but to be recognised in both the community and university sport sectors as offering the ‘best’ in certain areas means we’re really doing something right. The key for me though is that there is always another challenge around the corner. The dynamism of working on a university campus, working with some great people, as well as engaging with a passionate community keeps me on my toes and I genuinely love the job I do.

Run us through a typical day for you? My days are not necessarily that typical, and as my role covers more than sport now I am around campus most days of the week. On a normal day, I invariably start with admin, emails, and setting up what needs to be done. The majority of my time is either working on initiatives to grow our business or problem solve what is not going to plan. This still involves a lot of partners and stakeholders to Sportspark (clubs, customers and organisations we work closely with) and then those on campus, either within the student body or our staff team. Time seems to fly but a few people have suggested this is due to me ‘getting on a bit’! What about the facilities you have onsite, there’s quite a range isn’t there? Our facilities on offer are hugely diverse and are very well attended. Of course over the twenty or so years we have been open trends have changed and some sports / activities are not be as popular as before. We continuously work hard with the sport’s governing bodies to keep up to date and try to adapt to take on new and emerging activities that are growing in popularity. The facilities though still offer some of the most amazing variety across the East of England and we are hoping we can continue to be an innovator across the region. Can you sum up The Sportspark in five words? Friendly, engaging, entertaining, motivating, sociable. Can you sum yourself up in five words? Passionate, resilient, proactive, adaptable, confident.
