Looking Good!
Welcome Romance is in the air in February, so
there’s no better time to show the special someone in your life that you love them. It doesn’t have to be all about showering them with gifts, just a simple card can make all the difference. Different couples have different ideas about what to do to celebrate their romance. One cupid’s trash is another cupid’s treasure. The big question is: do you stay in or go out? This month we look at both sides of the coin and give you suggestions on what to do and where to go, whether you’re coupled up or flying solo. Also this month we look at some great wedding venues around the area - you never know that romantic dinner might just lead to a ring! Add to this the usual mix of what’s on, great food ideas and recipes, movies of the month and some fantastic book suggestions you will have lots to entertain you during your coffee break this month... maybe you’ll have to pop the kettle back on as it might take two cups!

20 March, Norwich Playhouse WHAT IF Romeo and Juliet didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, but grew up and lived happily ever after? At Norwich Playhouse on March 20 is an edgy new telling of the most famous love story of all which turns the Shakespearean tale on its head. Presented by Lost Dog Dance & House, it does away with the tragic ending and fast forwards to the hapless lovers at the age of 40-ish. In the grip of a mid-life crisis, the couple feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They decide to confront their struggles by putting on a performance about themselves, even though their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. Directed by Olivier Award-nominated Ben Duke, this lively 80-minute long production takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity. Lost Dog Dance company, which has been running since 2004 with the aim of creating work that is both theatre and dance, first presented Juliet and Romeo with a three-week London run two years ago, going on to tour during 2018 and 2019. Garnering five star reviews, The Guardian called it ‘Pure Pleasure. Smart, subversive and sexy’, while Time Out said it was ‘Insightful, funny and rich’. The show is recommended for ages 14+. www.norwichplayhouse.co.uk
DON AIREY, current keyboard player with Deep Purple, and Brian Downey, former drummer with Thin Lizzy, head to Norwich as part of their UK tour, with support from the fabulous Rebecca Downes. In these days where everybody seems to want to show off at every given occasion, Don Airey is without a doubt “one of a kind”. It is hard to find a name amongst all those that over the last 30 years have left their mark in the history of rock that has not utilised Don’s keyboard skills at some point. Amongst them Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Gary Moore, Brian May, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and, obviously, Deep Purple, the band of which Don Airey has been a full time member for over fifteen years. But – Don Airey has never been a session player. Bands and artists work with him for his unique musical Don Airey vision, for the twist he gives to songs. It is with the same passion, the same energy, the same talent that Don Airey approaches his very own songwriting. Brian Downey on drums needs no introduction... Hailing originally from Dublin, Brian enjoyed his first taste of success in Ireland with the top 20 hit ‘Morning Dew’ before forming ‘Orphanage with Phil Lynott. The two went on to form the legendary Thin Lizzy with Eric Bell and Brian remained a constant member until the band split in 1983. Having worked on Phil Lynott’s solo albums and the subsequent Grand Slam project, Brian relocated back to Dublin around the time of Phil’s untimely death on January 4th 1986. Brian remained in constant demand as both a touring and session drummer and regulary played live shows and recorded with renowned guitarist Gary Moore. Brian is often cited as being an influence by many of the world’s top drummers. www.eventim.co.uk

Blithe Spirit
Jennifer Saunders
She may be acclaimed for playing one of Britain’s best known PR people but Jennifer Saunders is about to take on another Absolutely Fabulous role.
T
he acclaimed comedy
actress will portray the eccentric clairvoyant Madame Arcati in Noel Coward’s classic Blithe Spirit, which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal on February 2429 as part of a national tour. Inventive and witty, it enjoyed a record-breaking run in the West End and Broadway after being premiered in 1941. This new production won critical and audience acclaim when performed at Theatre Royal Bath and comes to Norfolk prior to its West End return. What appealed to you about taking on the role of Madame Arcati? It’s one of those classic comedy roles for a woman of a certain age which are few and far between, so it was a no-brainer. I’ve never worked with Richard Eyre before and he has such a fantastic reputation and he’s such a brilliant director, so I thought it’d be great to do it. Madame Arcati has been played by many formidable performers over the years. How are you making the character your own? I think I must have seen Margaret Rutherford in the film but a long time ago, so I don’t have any other influences. It just sort of happens as you go through the text and think ‘Ooh, let’s do that’ and everyone has their own different way of doing comedy. Every actor is different. Do you have anything in common with her? [Laughs] I haven’t noticed any commonality, no. She does like a good sandwich so I think we’re quite similar in that respect. A dry martini and a sandwich is her idea of heaven and actually mine too.
What challenges does the role present? It goes into different energies. There’s a time where they think she’s a fool and you think she’s a fool, then you realise she isn’t at all. It’s quite hard to allow that to come across. She goes through a lot of different phases in the play and it’s not pure comedy either. The first time I read it I thought ‘That’s quite nice’ and the second time I read it I thought ‘It’s rather good’ and now I think ‘It’s a terrific play’. It’s about so many things. He [Noel Coward] makes it look easy because the dialogue is quite easy but actually it’s so dense and there’s so much in it. You’ve played your share of eccentric characters. Are they more fun to play? They’re terrifically good fun to play and it’s nice that you don’t have to play any vanity to them at all. Making people laugh is honestly the best fun in the world, and I like people who make me laugh so it’s like doing a job you appreciate.
Is this your irst time doing a Noel Coward play? It is, yes. I’ve only done two plays before this - Me And Mamie O’Rourke, which I did with Dawn in the early 90s, and Lady Windermere’s Fan in 2018. With Noel Coward, the language, is easy and it’s so close to our present-day language but they invert words. There are also times where you think ‘What was that word again? Is it dreadfully rather than fearfully?’ I panic about learning lines but the other characters in the play - God, they’ve got an enormous amount of lines. I take my bits out of the script and I look at the great wodge that’s left that they have to say and I think ‘Honestly, I really shouldn’t complain. They take the brunt of it’. Having done Lady Windermere’s Fan in the West End and now Blithe Spirit, do you have a new love for theatre? What put me off before was when the kids were growing up, the last thing you wanted was to get them home from school, do all the stuff at home and then go off to the theatre. [Laughs] Just when normal people are sitting down to a gin and tonic you start work. Do you have any dream theatre roles? Well, I hear they’re making a musical of The Devil Wears Prada so I’m thinking the Meryl Streep role would be a good one. I heard about it and thought ‘Gosh, I’d lose a few stone for that!’ Blithe Spirit runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from 24-29 February. www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

pening on Valentine’s Eve
13 February and taking place until 15 February across Norwich city centre, everyone’s invited to come along after dark to a new festival experience including incredible cultural installations, projections and pyrotechnics at Love Light Norwich. Over 20,000 people are expected to join in the fun along a spectacular Light Trail across three nights, with artworks and performances from local and international artists. In part inspired by Norfolk’s unique family tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Eve and the cheeky mythical character of
20
Jack Valentine, Love Light Norwich aims to light up the city in the midst of winter with a high quality cultural event which, it’s hoped, will create huge civic pride. It’s expected Love Light Norwich will take place every two years. But aside from the visual and joyous impact this illuminating festival will bring to all ages, the love light labs will also tackle the wider problem of loneliness and hope to empower social change. Thus the theme at the heart of the festival is love and belonging. Halo by Illumphonium at Norwich Cathedral
Love Light Norwich 13-15 February
Norwich Cathedral plays a big role in the festival. Australian artists Projection Teknik will transform this iconic building with a UK premiere presentation of a vivid contemporary projection. Since their inception in 1992, Projection Teknik have performed over 1500 projection installations in abstract and nostalgic forms creating distinctive atmospheric transformations and moods.

Downhill 15 | Comedy, Drama | Released: 28 February THIS MONTH get ready for a different kind of disaster movie. Nat Faxon and Jim Rash direct this black comedy which is an English language remake of the Swedish film Force Majeure by Ruben Östlund. Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus star as the married couple who, along with their children, barely escape an avalanche during a family ski holiday in the Alps. Pete (Ferrell) reacts first as the thousands of tons of crushing
snow thunder towards them, but does he really only try to save one member of his family... his phone! The married couple’s relationship is thrown into disarray as they are forced to re-evaluate their lives and how they feel about each other. Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are as excellent as always and this film will bring tears and laughter with something a little different for a February trip to the movies.
IN THIS satire about the world of the super-rich we see an all star cast including Sophie Cookson, Lily McCreadie, Asa Butterfield, Isla Fisher, Shirley Henderson, Stephen Fry, Steve Coogan and David Mitchell.

Birds of Prey
JANE AUSTEN’S beloved comedy is reimagined in this latest incarnation directed by Autumn de Wilde. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Emma Woodhouse in this tale of finding your equal and earning your happy ending with supporting roles from Josh O’Connor, Gemma Whelan and Bill Nighy. Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along, in this glorious satire of social class and the pain of growing up.
MARGOT ROBBIE reprises her role as Harley Quinn after her first outing in 2016s Suicide Squad. A twisted tale told by Harley Quinn herself, when Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Books
Elizabeth Parker looks at four great reads to brighten up your February...
I am an avid reader but it struck me that I had been sticking to the same genre, and even the same author, a bit like that comfy pair of slippers we always put on. So this month I decided to go to Waterstones in Norwich (www.waterstones.com) for inspiration... and I am so glad that I did.
THE MAN WHO DIDN’T CALL
THE TAKING OF ANNIE THORNE
by Rosie Walsh
‘Seven perfect days and
by C J Tudor
then he disappears’… a direct quote from the back of the book. This in itself made me want to read the book. After all who doesn’t want seven perfect days? Set in the beautiful English countryside Sarah spent a perfect week in the company of Eddie. The seeds are sown for a perfect romance, but then he disappears and Sarah becomes someone that she doesn’t recognise, with high anticipation that every call, every message, every social media post will be from Eddie. So what happened to him? Sarah’s friends tell her to move on, to forget what to Sarah is the unforgettable. If this was all there was to this book, then I certainly wouldn’t be recommending it, but it turns into an intriguing mystery page turner full of surprises. The biggest surprise to me was the connection that Eddie and Sarah have... but will it still have been the perfect romance?

Joey’s sister Annie
disappeared and then returned. A happy ending or just the beginning of a book that has you gripped with the turn of every page. One night, Annie went missing. Disappeared from her own bed. There were searches and appeals. Everyone thought the worst. And then... miraculously... after forty-eight hours, she came back. But she couldn’t, or wouldn’t, say what had happened to her. Joey struggles to explain what he felt but just knew that when she came back, she wasn’t the same. Joey was very reluctant to admit the fact that he was scared of his own sister. Spring forward and Joey receives an email that says ‘I know what happened to your sister…. And it’s happening again’. A Stephen King style thriller that will have you transfixed and submerged in the entanglement of the twisting plot. This book kept me intrigued all the way to the very end.
THE HIDING GAME
ONCE UPON A RIVER
I was drawn to this book by
With an absolutely
by Naomi Wood its cover and the fact that it has been signed! Once I had delved into the book I was delighted by the delicious descriptive language. I am normally inspired purely by the story of a book but this is written in such an eloquent way that it almost felt like your favourite box of chocolates. The story itself starts in 1922 at the Bauhaus art school. When Paul Beckermann arrives at the school he is immediately seduced by both the inspiring teaching and his fellow students. The more time Paul spends with his new friends the closer they become, and the deeper he falls in love with the mesmerising Charlotte. As political tensions escalate in Germany, the Bauhaus finds itself under threat, and the group begins to disintegrate under the pressure of its own betrayals and love affairs. Decades later, in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy, Paul is haunted by a secret. When an old friend from the Bauhaus resurfaces, he must finally break his silence.

by Diane Setterield beautiful cover, this book would have always drawn me to picking it up and perusing the delights underneath, but as I looked at it a lovely lady, a complete stranger, turned to me and said ‘you must read that book, I have and it was fantastic’. So with a personal recommendation from another book lover I felt that I must dive into the story beneath the inspiring cover. On a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the Thames, the regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories. When the door bursts open and in steps an injured stranger. In his arms is the drowned corpse of a child. Hours later, the dead girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? And who does the little girl belong to? This story is magical, bewitching and full of twists and turns like you are truly travelling down the river of an all-consuming multi layered mystery. It is one of those books that you just don’t want to end.

pink hot chocolate Perfect for Valentine’s AROMATIC and refreshing, Mermaid Pink Gin infuses the flavour of fresh Isle of Wight strawberries with the smooth yet complex taste of Mermaid Gin, a blend of lemon zest, grains of paradise and fragrant rock samphire. The latter, foraged from the island’s cliffs, is known locally as ‘Mermaid’s Kiss’, hence the gin’s name! Perfectly balanced, subtle yet vibrant, Mermaid Pink is less sweet than most pink gins and has no added sugar. Distilled using strawberries from the island’s Arreton Valley - a rich and fertile place that receives some of the best sunshine levels in the UK - the gin has a gentle pink hue. To create it, the strawberries are steeped in the distillery’s signature gin for four days. Then, half is removed to be distilled and eventually added back to the remaining infusion - lending the gin a refreshing and intensely aromatic strawberry flavour. Mermaid Pink Gin 38% ABV. Marks & Spencer. £40.00/70cl. 30

stay go?
should we or should we The most romantic day of the year is on the horizon, and whether you’re coupled up or lying solo, it’s a great excuse for a treat and some quality time – either with your partner, your bestie or simply with yourself. If you’re loved up, the big, Shakespeare-esque question is:
to go out, or not to go out? Jade Soanes offers up some date ideas to help you decide.
Staying in Cook dinner together
It’s said the way to the heart is through the stomach, and we have to agree. Life is busy, so it’s understandable that for most of us, dinner is usually decided based on whatever will cook the quickest. Switch things up on Valentine’s Day – light a few candles, play some music and set aside the time to make your favourite dishes as a team. Push the boat out and include a starter, main, dessert and accompanying wine – or, if cooking from scratch isn’t your forte, any supermarket’s meal deal will have your back.
Make them breakfast in bed
If you’ve been with your partner for a while, you’ll know it’s not always about grand gestures or elaborate surprises (although they’re nice too!). In my family, being served breakfast in bed is the height of luxury, reserved for birthdays, special occasions and particularly decadent Sundays. Give your partner the gift of a lie-in and a break from the humdrum morning routine by bringing them a special breakfast they can enjoy from the cosy embrace of their duvet.
Host a Valentine’s Day party
If you’re friends with lots of other couples, why not share the love and host a Valentine’s-themed gathering? This could be as mushy or casual as you like – go the whole hog with Mr & Mrsstyle quizzes, ballads, heart decorations and chocolate fondue,
37
or simply crack open a bottle of wine and a board game. To save putting on a spread by yourself, why not ask everyone to bring a dish and accompanying tipple – then indulge in an evening of good food, drink and company.
Make a treasure hunt
Prolong the gift-giving fun by creating a romantic treasure hunt dotted with clues that will lead your partner to their Valentine’s present. Get as creative and adventurous as you like – keep it within the confines of your home or go big by leading them to all the nearby places that have been significant in your relationship. The trail doesn’t have to end in anything extravagant (although if you were planning a proposal…), it’s the thought and effort put in that will earn you brownie points here. P&F recommends: checking out Pinterest to kick-start your cryptic clue ideas
Netflix and chill
Grab some popcorn, switch off your phone and settle in for a night on the sofa watching your favourite flicks. Can’t decide what to watch? Rom-coms may be the obvious choice, but in the spirit of compromise, choose a film each and snuggle up for a proper movie marathon. Netflix users will no doubt find a dedicated category for all Valentine’s-related titles… and as for the ‘chill’ part of the evening, what you choose to do after the credits roll is up to you!
Going out Recreate your first/favourite date
Recapture the magic of where and when it all began, or re-live one of your all-time favourite dates to remember how and why you first fell for your partner. This will be particularly special if you are now busy raising children, work away from each other or just generally haven’t managed to have a proper date night together for a while (hands up pretty much all of us, right?).
Go on a mini break
Why stop at just one day – extend the celebration of luuurve by whisking yourselves away for the ultimate treat: a weekend mini break. You don’t have to travel far to get away from it all either, especially with the abundance of boutique hotels and luxurious rentals on offer across Norfolk and Suffolk. Head to a destination neither of you have been to before or maybe have always been meaning to visit and enjoy exploring and making new memories. P&F recommends: The Pigs in Edgefield – spa rooms come complete with sauna, dual bathing tub and outdoor fire pit – bliss!
Jade Soanes
Two P&F colleagues
I’m afraid I’m the type of person that cringes at excessively soppy public

displays of affection (my eternal thanks go to my husband for proposing in the privacy of our lounge). And as events that come with the pressure of forced fun (New Year’s Eve, I’m looking at you) are equally low on my list of favourite things, it’s not really surprising that I prefer to celebrate Valentine’s Day by staying in. Over the decade we’ve been together, my husband and I have evolved a much-loved and greatly anticipated Valentine’s tradition of procuring a Marks and Spencer Dine In deal for dinner. We both love our food, and enjoy the rare, effortless treat of bunging everything in the oven and then settling down to chat and chomp our way through three-courses in the comfort of a stretchy waistband. We turn off our phones, light candles and put on music instead of the television. What could be more romantic than that? (OK, probably a lot, but it works for us). So, if you too want to avoid the sickly panoply of heart-shaped decorations and the stress of trying to curate the perfect date in dreary mid-February, take my advice – simply stay in, get cosy and spend some quality time together.
Food&Drink
Treat yourselves to a slap-up meal
What better excuse to get properly suited and booted for the evening than Valentine’s Day? Put on your glad rags and book a table at that fancy restaurant you’ve always wanted to try. Split a bottle of bubbly, gaze lovingly at one another in the candlelight and enjoy being waited on. If you find it hard to choose what to have because you want to scoff it all, order a few different dishes and share them together. P&F recommends: Pamela’s in Great Yarmouth – this hidden gem offers fine dining and a cocktail lounge worth getting dressed up for.
Try something new
No, not like that – we mean an activity or class, of course! Maybe you’ve both had a hankering to go to the ballet, see a comedian, try Spanish classes or simply go stargazing – well, this is the perfect time to make it happen and give yourselves a date to remember. Not only is this a great way to bond, but you could also discover a new hobby or skill – salsa lessons, anyone?
Have a spa day
Prepare to reconnect and unwind as you don your dressing gowns, leave electronics in your locker and relish in each other’s undivided attention on a trip to the spa. Pamper yourselves with a couple’s massage, melt away stress in the steam room or simply sit and let the bubbles of a hot tub gently pummel you towards zen-like levels of relaxation. You’ll emerge feeling energised and refreshed for another year of togetherness. P&F recommends: Imagine Spa Blofield Heath – lounge in the lap of luxury and choose from a range of treatments, including the couplefriendly Serail Mud Chamber experience.
Make an evening of it
Why not go to the theatre or a show before you head off for your slap-up meal. It is always a special treat to watch a show, and it doesn’t have to be a classic romance. A comedy is always a good alternative, especially as studies have shown that humour is the fourth most desired trait in a partner. To finish the evening off make sure you have booked a fancy boutique hotel and order breakfast in bed. P&F recommends: Curtains, Tuesday 11–Saturday 15 February showing at Theatre Royal Norwich.

There’s nothing more I love to do than put on my party frock and head out for the
night with Sam (my other half ). We have been together a number of years now and he knows me very well. Last year Sam started the Valentine’s extravaganza a week prior to the date when he sent me a card filled with twenty pound notes with instructions to get a new outfit with. The weekend before then turned in to a day of retail therapy. As we both have very busy work lives we had decided to save going out until Saturday 16 February rather than a mid week date. Saturday morning a beautiful bunch of flowers arrived from Fresh & Silk Flowers, my favourite florist in Beccles. We then headed for Norwich where we had a room booked at the lovely Georgian Town House which has beautiful boutique rooms. After a G&T in the bar we headed to the Ivy Norwich Brasserie for our dinner reservation; fabulous food in a classy setting, what more could a girl want. Finishing the night off we headed to a couple of the great bars around the centre of Norwich for cocktails. A wonderful romantic evening, I can’t wait to see what he has in-store for this year.

Have a Galentine’s gathering If you know spending the day alone will make you feel blue, gather the gang and do something fun with your favourite people. Despite the name it’s not just for girls – guys, you can join in too. One of my favourite Valentine’s was spent with best friends, a trashy film and some cocktails – let’s face it, you’ll probably have more fun with friends than you would with anyone else anyway!
Tickle your funny bone There’s little that a good laugh can’t cure. Book tickets to see a stand-up comedian, dig out your favourite box set or go and watch the latest comedy at the cinema. You could even try a silly activity that’ll get you giggling and the endorphins flowing – hello, trampoline park!
Date day with your bestie
Singles don’t have to mingle
You don’t need to actually be dating to take advantage of some Valentine’s Day offers. Whether it’s a two-for-one meal, a free box of chocolates, money off a couple’s massage or an upgrade to a fancier room, blag your way to the best of everything with the help of your bestie.
Do something for yourself Always wanted bright pink hair? To go to Paris? What about some of the things you like doing that your ex didn’t – be it having a Chinese takeaway or simply watching re-runs of The Big Bang Theory. Whatever it is, an action big or small, get empowered and do it today.

Whether you are happily single, ‘self-partnered’ à la Emma Watson, or have recently been through a break-up, there’s no reason why Valentine’s Day has to be all about couples. Here are some things you could do to make it just as special if you’re lying solo.
Go on a shopping spree Forget spending money on chocolates and flowers for someone else, show yourself some love and head to the shops. Whether it’s new clothes, jewellery, an Xbox game or something for the house – treat yourself to something that will make you smile and remind you that you’re doing just fine on your own.
On the flip side, you could celebrate your love for friends and family by doing a good deed that will give you all the warm and fuzzies. Have an elderly neighbour who will be alone? Take them a bunch of flowers and have a cuppa. Have nieces and nephews? Offer to babysit so their parents can have a well-needed night out.
Take the day off social media Facebook may well be a nightmare of mushy posts and engagement announcements, but if you take the day as a digital detox you won’t have to see any of it. Log out, unplug and spend the evening vegging out the oldfashioned way – with a good book (see page 24 for our picks this month), game or film.

The
Colney Suite at Park Farm Hotel
My first wedding experience was when I was a toddler as a flower girl. I didn’t quite understand the fuss and it took most of the morning to wrestle me into the dress I was to wear. Flicking through a wedding brochure for Park Farm Hotel, however, I wonder if even 3-year-old me could resist stepping into such a beautiful venue.
A
fter choosing the
person you are going to marry, the next most important decision when planning a wedding is the venue. The place you celebrate your special day should be somewhere relaxed but exquisite in a beautiful setting. The Colney Suite at Park Farm Hotel, Norwich, “where moments are made special,” ticks all the boxes. This new premier wedding venue is housed inside Park Farm Hotel and is set in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, just a short journey from Norwich, and can cater to a full range of requirements. Whether you want to tie the knot in a church or at the hotel, have an intimate celebration or a big white wedding, the team can make it happen. Michael Bannister, business development manager for Park Farm says

the staff at the hotel are what make the destination so special. The hospitality industry often has a very high staff turnover rate, however many of the senior members of the Park Farm team have stayed in their positions for many years. As new staff start their careers, the professionals at Park Farm pass on years of dedicated expertise, something Michael says will really shine through in 2020. This will mark an extra special year for the weddings team at Park Farm. The revamped Colney Suite is launching in April of 2020, just in time for spring and summer weddings. The beautiful suite will be just another jewel in the crown of Park Farm’s wedding package crown. “The concept images alone are enough to get any potential couple excited,” Michael said. “With a neutral colour scheme and country house theme, it’s sure
to prove popular with anyone tying the knot next spring and beyond.” Perhaps one of the most excited individuals is the wedding coordinator for Park Farm, Sue Dedman. Having organised over 1,000 weddings for the hotel, her experience speaks for itself. She can make any bride’s dream come true, down to the smallest details. Although a lot of Sue’s time is spent organising, planning and coordinating, her favourite part is seeing it all come together on the big day. “Having built up a relationship with the couple during the planning of their big day, I then get to witness it all come together,” Sue said. “I see the beautiful dresses, flowers, table decorations, hear the speeches. The entire day is filled with love, happiness, family and friends, what better way to spend a day?” In the future, it will be possible to tie the knot outside before the lavish reception. Guests will be able to take pictures in the perfectly manicured gardens before enjoying an open-air ceremony, followed by the reception of their dreams. Packages range from The Classic to The Executive — there is even an Afternoon Tea option. The happy couple and their

The entire day is filled with love, happiness, family and friends, what better way to spend a day? guests will enjoy fizz, canapes and a fourcourse breakfast with petit fours to finish, and so much more (when booking the Executive Package). Before you make the trip down the aisle, you can enjoy the facilities of the hotel. There is a full leisure suite with a swimming pool and spa. Massages and treatments are available in addition to manicures, pedicures and stylist appointments. All packages includes a year’s leisure membership for the happy couple.
When flicking through the Park Farm Hotel wedding brochure, it is hard not to start fantasising about your hypothetical wedding day in the new Colney Suite, even if you are a long-term singleton! The menu options are extensive, and even a concise description sets the mouth watering. Executive Chef David Bell and his kitchen brigade aim to cater to all guests’ dietary requirements. There is even a range of delicious options for the youngest members of your party - no one needs an upset flower girl or page boy. Despite the new developments and a jam-packed schedule for the team at Park Farm, there are no plans to slow down. Even when they aren’t coordinating a happy couple’s day, they are hosting guests
in the hotel, spa and restaurant. “The development never stops at Park Farm and I think that is a big part of why the hotel is such a success,” Michael said. “We have multiple refurbishments and possible extensions planned for 2021 and 2022, so the future is looking bright.”.

HILST fresh flowers and
chocolates are lovely, Valentine’s can also be about creating an experience and doing something special together, some pampering and spending time with each other. Jo Malone London, based in Jarrold Norwich, is a brand synonymous with its colognes that ‘everyone can wear’. They offer complimentary scented experiences including their Hand and Arm Massage. A beautiful experience which can be done alone or with the one you love, looked after by their expert stylists. Enjoy a glass of fizz (guests must be 18 and over) and delicious treats whilst you are pampered. The 20 minutes includes an initial cleanse of hand and arm with their body and hand wash, in a fragrance of your choice, or as recommended by their stylists. Choose from various scents including the citrus scent of lime, basil and mandarin; to the iconic fruity scent of pomegranate noir. A massage follows using body creme or the luxurious dry body oil. During the treatment you can discover the art of ‘fragrance combining’, choosing scents that can be layered and complement each other and this forms the final part of pampering. With their scents being for everyone to wear you can even choose the perfect one to share with a partner whether it be cologne, bath oil, body oils or my own personal

favourite their hair mist with argan oil and pro vitamin B. For those who don’t wear scent there are beautiful gifts for the home including candles, diffusers, room and linen sprays. Their experts are more than happy to create the perfect wish list if your loved ones are spoiling you this year, or you can take a seat and create a bespoke gift for the one you love. Jo Malone are continuously creating beautiful new scents with their recent addition ‘Vetiver and Golden Vanilla’ as an intense cologne. Again a scent for both men and women. I’ll be adding it to my own personal wish list, with cardamom, vanilla bourbon and vetiver it’s such a sensual scent and lasted all day without fading. It is part of the ‘scents to fall for’ this Valentine’s Day, a collection of gifts to give (and receive!). In addition they have launched a trio of small but perfectly formed travel candles to create a romantic atmosphere. As a special finishing touch, for customers purchasing two or more products, the gift can be presented in a beautiful heart shaped box. Additionally for Valentine’s, ruby red caps for cologne add a romantic finish for a small additional charge. Jo Malone London at Jarrold will be hosting a special weekend event ‘Declare Your Love with Scent’ on the 8th and 9th of February. An opportunity for you to go in store to discover your own bespoke scent or to share as a romantic gift for each other this Valentine’s.
I’ll be adding it to my own personal wish list, with Cardamon, Vanilla Bourbon and Vetiver it’s such a sensual scent and lasted all day without fading.

with transport of London, Kirkby Design have created a distinct collection of upholstery velvets derived from original and iconic designs historically used across their network. Kirkby Design have reinterpreted designs used on individual London transport lines from the 1930s to present day. A visual identity for London’s public transport was created through textile design, which were hard wearing and distinctively patterned fabrics. These have covered Transport for London’s seating for several decades. Unique rich colour palettes and eye catching geometrics have brought global recognition. Frank Pick, Managing Director of London Transport during the 1930s, firmly believed in design excellence. Frank commissioned work of the highest quality for everything, including the fabrics used for upholstery. Under Frank’s leadership, Christian

F
ebruary can be a strange month – the weather can be unpredictable, one day cold with clear blue skies, the next damp and mild, and with the very real possibility of snow still lingering. However, whatever weather nature decides to serve us, one thing is for certain, the first, exciting signs of new growth are beginning to show. Each passing day is now noticeably longer and, straining upwards towards the light through whatever barrier tries to hinder its progress, the snowdrops inexorable progress continues, announcing to us all that spring is definitely on the way! The thrill of seeing your first snowdrop of the year is palpable. For many, the onset of winter can be a difficult time – dark, short days and inclement weather often limiting the time spent outdoors, in the garden or with nature – the restorative benefits somehow inhibited by the season’s
dark veil. The symbolic snowdrop helps raise the spectre – the white flowers illuminating the gloom of the darkest woods and, in tandem, lifting our spirits. The snowdrop is just the start, soon the crocuses will follow, adding colour to winter’s monochrome palette and then, of course, the swathes of yellow in the form of daffodils will announce, less subtly, that spring is, indeed, upon us. But all nature’s effort seems a little worthless unless we make the effort to witness first-hand the ever-changing canvas she is presenting to us. Put on those base layers, pull on the jumper, wrap yourself in a coat and scarf and march out in your wellies and, whatever the weather, your senses will be rewarded by some spectacle or other. The uplifting cacophony of a skein of geese in formation across the sky, a pocket of snowdrops under a tree, or the mesmerising song of a robin singing its little heart out with all the gusto of an opera singer! Why not take a moment to sit still, close to the bird feeders, and watch
the visitors as they squabble for the much needed food – the literal pecking order is fascinating to observe. Venture further and some of us are lucky enough to hear the roar of the winter waves as they crash and break on the shore. There is nothing quite like a coastal walk to reawaken the senses – the smell, the sound and the pure physicality blasting away the last remnants of January. And don’t forget the garden – it’s the month of Valentine’s so it’s time to reawaken the love affair! Enjoy the smell and the feel of soil again and plant up some containers with hardy spring bedding plants such as primroses and forget-menots. And always “think wildlife” as their well-being is just as important as ours. Clean out the bird boxes and add some new ones – it’s never too late! Or why not plant a new wildlife hedge – time is running out to buy bare root plants but species such as dog rose, hawthorn, hazel and wild plum make fantastic hedges, providing food and shelter for a huge range of species. Importantly, even if conditions are mild, avoid turning the compost heap until April as frogs, small mammals and insects may be hibernating within and any disturbance can threaten their survival. So, February can be a strange month, but an uplifting one too, so reawaken the love for your garden, for nature and for life!

HE NEW FORD PUMA
is a fresh chapter in Ford’s design identity with styling cues including distinctive wing-top mounted headlamps and athletic lines. SUV-inspired proportions deliver a raised ride-height for a confidence-enhancing driving experience, and support class-leading uncompromised luggage capacity of 456 litres. The new Puma introduces Ford’s advanced, fuel-saving mild-hybrid powertrain technology alongside classleading practicality and head-turning design for compact crossover customers. Powerful, responsive performance and optimised fuel efficiency is delivered using Ford’s EcoBoost Hybrid 48-volt technology – seamlessly integrating electric torque assistance with a low-friction, threecylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine to deliver up to 155 PS. Advanced driver assistance technologies delivering a simpler and less stressful driving experience include: • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centring, for effortlessly negotiating motorway and stop-start traffic.
• New Local Hazard Information, which can inform the driver of hazardous situations in the road ahead before they become visible to the driver or vehicle sensors. The Puma is also the first vehicle in its segment to offer hands-free tailgate technology and lumbar massage seats for comfort and convenience – both delivered as standard in the premium Titanium X specification. The Ford Performanceinspired Puma ST-Line is offered with signature sports body styling including 19-inch optional matt black machined alloy wheels, sports suspension and a flatbottomed steering wheel. A new Puma STLine X Vignale variant further enhances
comfort with standard Windsor leather seats and a premium B&O Sound System. Inside, the Puma Titanium X is the first Ford to feature removable and washable seat covers that will help customers keep their premium interior feeling like new. The integrated zipper makes it easy for owners to remove covers using just one hand. The interior is further enhanced with a leather-effect steering wheel, wood-effect appliques surrounding the cluster bezel and instrument panel, and contemporary fabric inserts for the door interiors. Last year Ford announced that every one of the company’s nameplates launched from the all-new Focus onwards will include an electrified option. Puma is one of 14 electrified vehicles to be introduced by Ford by the end of this year. Life Living National Careers Week Empowering positive change through careers education
NATIONAL CAREERS WEEK (NCW) is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar, to help support young people leaving education. Run as a not-forprofit company to promote the importance of good careers education in schools and colleges, founded and backed by a number of volunteers with a wealth of experience from education, business and careers guidance. EMPOWERING STUDENTS: Providing quality free, CEIAG resources and linking education with the world of employment to ensure students get an important insight into the future of work and further learning. Better informed students result in better decision making. EMPOWERING ORGANISATIONS: The opportunities for organisations to promote their training or careers options to future generations are limited; schools and colleges have little time for extended CEIAG activities. NCW creates the time and provides the opportunity for organisations to engage and inspire. National Careers Week 2020 2-7 March www.nationalcareersweek.com

How can I
help my
childprogress? make
Elizabeth Parker talks about how you can support and motivate your child to do that extra bit to help them be successful and make progress during their education.
I
REMEMBER the night I came home with my first born and the worries and concerns that I had then. How much milk should they have? Is he too warm? Too cold? And then the first time he slept through the night... My first thought was not “thank goodness a good night’s sleep”, but hints of panic, is he alive? Is he breathing? You cannot fully comprehend the roller coaster of emotions that being a parent brings. It has plenty of highs, beautiful and joyous times, first steps, first words, first nativity play. But the lows and challenges also keep coming and change, with every new life stage. In As You Like It William Shakespeare wrote there were seven ages of man, but I think he miscounted. Then when you think you have got to grips with the particular life stage you are in, a new phase appears and you have to rethink how you are going to support, manage, adapt and even change to move forward. One could almost say that being a parent is like the gift that keeps on giving. So here are a few ways in which you could easily help your child to make progress and feel supported as they travel through their journey of education.
66
Preschool
This is a time where your children are like little sponges and absorb anything and everything. Build those good habits right from the Moses basket by reading to them as much as possible. Then continue to read to them and with them for all of eternity, but as they get older do not restrict yourself to books. As delightful as children’s books are there is a whole wealth of language, letters, shapes and patterns everywhere you go. Talk about what you see. Encourage children to describe the letters. Once they are able to sound out the alphabet do
so wherever you see them: shop names, menus, toy packaging and not forgetting the ever forbidden electronics! What did we all do before iPads? Did you know that children with deaf parents learn to read quicker due to the constant exposure of the subtitles? Food for thought! Embrace the “Why?”. This phase drives adults mad but it is only your little one’s way of trying to learn about the world around them.
Life&Living
Secondary School
How did that happen? Your beautiful baby that depended on you for everything is now trying to establish their independence. Whether they think they do or not they still need you to help establish that routine of homework, independent study and revision for all of their assessments. Spend time with them organising their day. When are they going to do their homework? Where is the best space for them? Help and support them in a practical way. Test them on what they need to know. A good strategy is either buying cue cards from places such as Amazon; they have cue cards for every subject, or you could make your own, a question on one side and then the answer on the other side. Double learning! Be interested, enthusiastic and motivated. Sometimes you will be all three for the both of you!
Primary School
My advice to everyone is “do not compare your child with another”. We are all guilty of this. No two children are the same and that includes siblings. My two boys are so different, definitely chalk and cheese. And before you berate yourself for doing that with your own children we are not all experts on bringing up children, so naturally we will compare as we learn by experience. With my eldest my friends always said he was a text book baby; he is focussed, academic and hard-working. My second is a live wire. Now does that make him a handful, or a difficult child, or just
Spend time with them organising their day. When are they going to do their homework? Where is the best space for them? Help support them in a practical way. Test them on what they need to know. ever so different from my first experience? Find what your child responds to. What are the rewards that they will work for? Be consistent. Insist upon that continued reading and involve all of the family. Play games with words that they have to learn. Draw words with different colours. Make them out of playdough or draw in the sand. Make learning fun and be enthusiastic.
Then before you blink your child is in Year 5 or 6 and it seems much more serious. The loom of SATS. Your primary school should give you lots of support, but what can you do to help your child? It is important to get the right balance. If you are too flippant about the assessments, then potentially you are sending the message to your children that assessments are not important - which might be how you feel when they are 10 and 11 years old but when your little malleable child turns into a large reluctant teenager you will wish that you had trained them when they were little. Equally you do not want them to feel pressurised, as the pressure and anxiety only increases as the teenage and GCSE years appear. Celebrate the start of SATs preparation. A family day incorporating buying some work books chosen by your child helps reinforce the notion that we do a little extra work and preparation together to do the best that we can. ‘Fail to prepare, and prepare to fail.’
Why not try... These are a few suggested resources to help you, which I have used both as a parent and as a Science teacher.

Norwich High School for Girls Receiving national recognition for excellent education
N
ORWICH HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
on Newmarket Road beat a record number of entries across the country to win Independent Girls’ School of the Year at the Independent School of the Year awards held at the end of 2019. The school was one of just seven girls’ schools to have made it through to the final round of the competition before winning the top prize at the ceremony at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London on Monday, October 7. The panel of 14 judges based their decision on evidence of success stories and awarded 20 prizes covering arts, sports, outreach, student success and careers programmes, as well as the top individual school awards. Kirsty von Malaisé, headmistress of Norwich High School for Girls and one of the EDP’s Top 100 Inspiring women of 2019, said: “Norwich High School is an outstanding school and I could not be more proud that we have received national recognition of this, particularly with the exceptionally strong competition in this category.
“We were lauded not only for our pioneering Inspiring Females programme which has supported well over 3,000 young women from Norfolk and beyond over the last three years, but also for our bold ambitions for the girls in many other exceptional initiatives.” The award is the latest in a line of prestigious prizes for the school. In October, the school became one of only 32 other schools in the UK - and the only senior school in Norfolk - to receive the Apple Distinguished Schools status for 2019 to 2022.
Moving from a figurative apple to a real apple, Norwich High has also been doing some excellent work on outdoor learning, ranging from launching a wonderful new heritage orchard on the site, which is managed by the girls and was home to four Wensleydale rams in the summer, to conservation work on Mousehold Heath and clearing plastic from local beaches. Most recently, the school has just been shortlisted TES Independent School Awards for Strategic Education Initiative of the Year and Pre-Prep/Prep School of the Year 2020, and has also been awarded the Dyslexia Friendly Quality Award by the BDA (British Dyslexia Association). This award is only issued to schools or organisations that can demonstrate that they provide high quality education and practice for dyslexic individuals. Mrs von Malaisé said: “Congratulations to all of the girls, staff, community and supporters of Norwich High who have worked with enthusiasm and passion over the last few years to make our school continue to excel - this award is for you all.”

Fifty-six percent of students that progress to Russell Group universities achieve a First-Class degree, over 20% higher than the national average for State and Independent sectors. Ten students received offers at Oxford and Cambridge for 2019, a record-breaking number for EN and all six students who applied for medicine were offered places at their chosen universities. But we are not just about students progressing to university, more than 25% progress directly to employment and more than 10% go on to apprenticeships. Students with aspirations to be professional footballers or pursue a career in sport have a unique opportunity too as EN is the only college locally with the prestigious Norwich City Community Sports Foundation Elite Football and Elite Xtra programmes, including a brand new coaching and player pathway, for men and women. The college is also one of only 25 FA Super Hubs, placing EN at the forefront of sporting innovation and excellence. EN is also home to the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the only one in the local area, and is an approved centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Students choose EN because of the freedom and independence that a Sixth Form College experience offers. Located in the very heart of the Gorleston community, students are just a short walk away from the high street with its mix of shops, cinema, library and gorgeous beach. Likened to a mini-university campus, the college continues to grow, with stateof-the-art buildings and outstanding facilities to support students on their route to success. All of our students are encouraged from the moment they start at EN to see themselves as achieving at the highest level. We stretch and challenge them to aspire to be the very best so that when they leave, they have excellent results and have developed a range of skills to help them to be more rounded individuals. Students can combine their Level 3 courses, both A-Level and BTECs to build a programme that suits their aspirations. They can also
study up to four subjects depending upon their achievements at GCSE level. Don’t just take our word for it though. Come and visit us on our next Information Evening, 11 March 5pm–7pm. We will be delighted to highlight everything that EN has to offer and hopefully inspire students to choose the college for an outstanding future.

Latin and Ancient History are offered alongside more contemporary options such as Photography, Psychology, Textiles and EPQ. For some subjects, such as Mathematics, students need to have passed a GCSE in the same subject. Others require no specific prior knowledge of the subject. Students will receive classroom, laboratory or workshop tuition and are encouraged to work independently, undertaking research for topical projects, frequently outside school hours. Educational visits form part of the timetable. As an independent school, we can enhance the curricula to meet a student’s particular requirements. The curriculum includes an enrichment programme covering mindfulness, financial management, critical-thinking and leadership skills, supported by an excellent range of extra-curricular activities. Students have dedicated time with both tutor and Head of Sixth Form to monitor progress and provide individual support, working closely with the Enhanced Learning Department for students who need help with study skills or organisational techniques, so that every student can achieve his or her personal best at A Level.

Kate Morfoot, leading travel writer and founder of www.lovetoeattotravel.com, island hops in the Maldives and discovers paradise and the underwater world.
B
E ASSURED the Maldives are utterly stunning. It’s hardly surprising with it boasting the best beaches in the world, a beautiful year-round climate, warm crystalclear sea and an enthralling rich and diverse underwater world. The sand really is white and powdery, the sea really is the colour of emeralds. It’s a destination of envy, a place where most people dream of taking a glorious holiday and it’s the top destination of choice for a honeymoon. The resorts which occupy the atolls pull out all the stops to give you fine service and the best possible time for your hard-earned cash. With over 133 resorts to choose from, how do you pick one over the other? Other than the price, what ticks the boxes to make the final decision on where to holiday when the resorts are all located in this perfect paradise destination? I made the ten-hour direct flight from Gatwick with British Airways to the Maldives to find out how two resorts place themselves in the market and operate to offer you the holiday of a lifetime.

Noku Maldives
To get to Noku Maldives I took a seaplane from mainland Male. It’s just a 45-minute flight with TMA (Trans Maldivian Airways) from the international airport to Noku, situated on Kuda Funafaru in Noonu atoll. In my view this is an incredibly glamourous way to island hop and it gives you a superb birds eye view of the atolls below. I describe Noku Maldives as a luxury boutique resort on an island sanctuary of calm. It’s a perfect resort for those who want to be peaceful and relax. Expect nothing apart from luxury on this barefoot island. ‘Take your time, no rush’ is their motto. It didn’t take me long to wind down from the journey as I had a wonderful lunch by the sea overlooking the ever-varying blue hues of the Indian Ocean. The menu is changed daily and caters for all dietary requirements. Taking into consideration that the island is in the middle of nowhere, it is undoubtedly world-class restaurant quality. The breakfasts were incredible, as were the descriptions about your options, which also changed daily! For drinks; ‘Breakfast without coffee and juice is like a day without the sky and ocean.’ Options for bread; ‘Love and baking cannot be hurried.’ For granola; ‘Flakes of pleasure.’ Even the menu became a simple pleasure of what Chef Tarique had thought of today. It’s fresh and interesting and many of the
dishes have Maldivian and Asian flavours and influences. Fresh fish is caught daily so depending on the catch you can enjoy tuna, reef fish or snapper. At this resort there’s only table service, perfect for those who dislike buffets. Noku didn’t disappoint with diverse food choices and quality of fresh ingredients. Both Palms Restaurant and their waterside ‘dining under the stars’ ‘Thari’ Restaurant were excellent, the menus were tasty with food influences representing their portfolio of hotels which include Thailand and of course, the Maldives. Noku Maldives has 30 over-water villas and 20 private beach villas. My beach villa was beautifully appointed with high ceilings and spacious rooms just steps from the white sandy beach. The super-sized king bed was situated opposite the French doors, which offered both a view of, and access to via a short walk to, the sea. The roll top bath with luxury sea salts accompanied an indoor shower and outdoor rain shower with access outside to the sun deck with sun loungers, an outdoor table and a hammock. The villas have all been created with the utmost privacy in mind and I was pleased not to have a TV to interrupt the peacefulness I had come to treasure. The fridge is stocked daily with fresh juices and milk in attractive glass bottles and homemade breadfruit crisps.

The island is focussed on being plastic free; no plastic bags, straws or bottles to be seen. They are also active with its coral growing programme and buy produce where possible from the local farm islands. Things to do? Apart from relaxing by the infinity pool or on the pristine beach, there’s the Sub Oceanic at Noku Maldives. Noku’s five-star PADI dive center has a friendly and professional team boasting brand new scuba equipment. It has an excellent dive boat ‘dhoni’ to take you out to the best diving locations in the area. I took my Aqualung scuba diving kit, but it’s not necessary unless you like having your own gear, because most resorts hire top diving equipment. The resort location in Noonu atoll is right in the middle of a thriving marine eco-system which is surrounded by rich and beautiful house reefs. Here you will find their coral garden project where they are planting coral to create additional habit for the underwater life and eco-system. I explored some fascinating dive sites in my quest to become an Advanced Open Water PADI diver. In addition I completed my knowledge development back home online via PADI eLearning®. I then went on to complete five dives with my PADI Instructor at Noku. One site is called ‘Shark Point’ which didn’t fail to deliver on tremendous shark spotting! On my dive at Orimas Thila, I saw many white tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, shoals of trumpet fish and many colourful fish and corals. At Bodurah Gaa Giri we found sleeping nurse sharks, sting rays in caves, shrimps and families of lionfish, not to mention snapping moray eels! On another dive I was fortunate enough to scuba with dolphins and say hello to a passing turtle at a depth of 17m and view spotted eagle rays. The diving visibility is excellent and there’s an abundance of underwater life. The house reef beyond the sunset water villas is also excellent for snorkelling. Paddle boarding and kayaking is available to explore the island shores as well as catamaran sailing, fishing or kite flying. Sunset and dolphin cruises are offered as well as an island excursion. With average sea temperatures of around a warm 26 degrees, it’s fantastic to enjoy the sea and lovely sunshine. Noku hosts fish feeding evenings, attracting many fish as well as juvenile reef sharks, while serving tea and homemade treats. There are also movie nights and traditional dancing and music evenings. There’s also daily morning yoga in the Spa Alcove overlooking the sea, a wellequipped gym for working off the excess food and a more tempting Noku Spa, where you can truly relax and unwind with four professional treatments, with indoor and outdoor showers, a swimming pool, together with wonderful lotions and potions to really help you switch off. What can you expect from Noku Maldives? Five-star personal service, space, tranquillity, luxury, privacy, safety, nature and above all, deliciously fresh food served with a smile in true paradise.
Reethi Faru Resort The Maldives are made up of an archipelago of 1,192 islands set in 26 natural atolls so expect to have to travel to get to your resort either by speedboat, a seaplane or a charter flight. To get to my next destination at Reethi Faru, I took a 20-minute domestic flight from mainland Male to Dharavandhoo with Flyme, and from there a 40-minute speed boat ride where you are welcomed by happy staff who kindly gave me a traditional Maldivian necklace. underwater world as well as the natural landscape. With that in mind, their vision has been to create a resort, that leads the way in sustainability while combining the highest levels of attention to creating the place to holiday for fun, romance, seclusion and privacy. I stayed in a luxurious water villa and enjoyed very much waking up to the view of the Indian Ocean. It was beautifully appointed and spacious with walls decorated with traditional Maldivian artwork. The king size bed was placed overlooking the view to the sea; also you have a choice of a large bath, an indoor or outdoor shower. The mini bar is stocked daily with drinks. The outdoor space has two decks, one shady area with sunbeds and another level nearer the sea for sunbathing. Sitting out on the sun deck watching the sunset was something I never get bored of. My neighbours spotted a pod of dolphins from their water villa, a memory to treasure from their honeymoon they will never forget. in Raa atoll. It has a wonderful choice of accommodation including 20 garden villas, deluxe beach villas (some with Jacuzzis and pools) and deluxe water villas and suites. Reethi was designed to utilise and coexist with the natural surroundings. It is a stunning tropical eco-resort with a clear and determined focus on sustainability and nurturing its precious natural environment that bans plastic straws, bottles and bags. It’s hard to believe the resort has only been open for 18 months, but great care was given to building around the trees and nature that existed, also taking care not to disturb the 79

Parking with Airport Parking & Hotels 01342 710 071 www.aph.com/gatwick-airport/parking In the event that seawater levels will rise due to the warming of the atmosphere, these atolls, that are at no more than about two meters above sea level, will be most vulnerable. The mean altitude above sea level is 1.5 meters, the lowest in the world, the highest point at Vilingili island on Addu atoll is only 2.4 meters above sea level. Saying no to plastic is one positive thing, however, Reethi Faru Resort goes many steps further and will pave the way by setting a leading example for more resorts to do the same. Not only leaders for their environmental efforts, but also for their activities, Reethi Faru has been awarded prizes for its water sports centre and is one of the top ten in Asia. They have an incredible set up offering so much including dolphin and sunset safaris, island visits, new sea bobs, fly-high jet packs, jet skiing, parasailing, tornado sofa and banana experiences, paddle boarding and sailing. Enquiring how jet skiing fit with their environment philosophy, I was informed that the jet skis are the best in the market for low fuel emissions and they are only used over certain areas of the sea away from the coral reefs.
Scuba diving in the Maldives is one of the best locations in the world to see sea turtles, sharks and parrot fish. It’s also known as a Manta hot spot. Sea Explorer runs the PADI dive centre; I experienced some excellent dive sites at Aarah Bodo Thila, Lhohi Island and Saddle. All scuba diving centres require the correct travel insurance, I always use www.insureandgo.com which includes scuba diving risks on the policy. This boutique resort plays host to visitors who want seclusion. The island, although at 98% occupancy never feels overly busy. The infinity pool has space for sunbathing, and there’s secluded areas on the wonderful sandy beach. The thatched bars along the beach are convenient to pop into for drinks and snacks, also at the main bar where you will find shade and evening entertainment. There’s plenty of dining options where you are spoilt for choice between the six restaurants and bars. The resort’s main restaurant Vakaru serves buffet-style meals, or you can opt for other choices depending on your appetite. For example the overwater restaurant offers 24 hr dining or you

can opt for a la carte dining in Dhiyavaru and the romantic open-air Reethi Grill restaurant lit up by candles on the beach. For those not on the inclusive option, the restaurant menus are reasonably priced; this in my experience is unusual for islands in the Maldives, which are highly priced due to having to import most goods. I particularly liked the Maldivian food corner where you could try dishes including Maldivian tuna curry and traditional roshi flat bread. Reethi Faru resort captures the essence of a luxury eco tropical hideaway. It has so much to offer the active holidaymaker as well as those of us who prefer a relaxing and romantic high end beach holiday, with picture-perfect sandy white beaches draped with palm trees set against the crystal clear emerald coloured ocean.

Karen Randell K
aren Randell is an
experienced podiatrist and clinical director of Randell’s Footcare. Randell’s offer excellence and expertise for all issues affecting the feet and lower limbs in their seven clinics across Norwich and North Norfolk. They are one of the most successful podiatry practices in the country and their team of clinicians aim to provide the latest in podiatry techniques, including a specialist biomechanics service. Karen, I understand that you have recently opened a brand new biomechanics clinic in Norwich? Yes, we are delighted to be able to offer this new service to our customers. Our premises, on Dereham Road, offers two podiatry clinics and a specialist biomechanics clinic. We have specialist podiatrists and have invested in state of the art equipment, including a pressure plate and a treadmill with video gait analysis, to help us with accurate understanding of foot movement, posture and pressure.
So what actually is biomechanics and why would I need an assessment? Anyone who suffers from pain in the feet, legs, hips or back would probably benefit from this assessment. Perhaps you have noticed that you are prone to ankle sprains or that your feet roll in or out? Do you have flat or high arches or one leg longer than the other? Maybe you suffer with a bunion, corns or calluses? Perhaps you suffer with sporting injuries? All of these conditions can affect the way our foot strikes the ground as our body adjusts to compensate. This in turn can cause us to suffer pain and discomfort when walking or running, which has a serious impact on day to day living. A biomechanical assessment looks at the cause-and-effect relationship between your feet, legs and upper body. This involves the diagnosis and assessment of the structure, alignment and function of muscles, bones and joints of the feet and lower limb. Having an accurate picture of what is happening can help up to develop an effective treatment plan to get you moving free from pain.
What treatments are available and how successful are they? Well the type of treatment will really depend on the diagnosis, but may involve prescribing pre-formed, or sometimes custom-made orthotics and certain stretches and footwear advice. We also now have radial shock-wave therapy for certain conditions such as plantar fasciitis. We are delighted that our patients have reported some fantastic results. One gentleman recently commented that having suffered for over 25 years from knee and hip pain and having worn our orthotics for four months, he had been pain free and comfortable, which he said was a brilliant relief. Another lady told us she was so pleased with her orthotics and it was the best thing she has ever done! Certainly hearing such wonderful feedback and knowing we have improved the quality of our patient’s lives, makes my work really worthwhile.

What happens during the assessment? Well, firstly the podiatrist will take a history of your symptoms. Then your feet and legs will be examined both lying down and standing up; we will take lots of measurements and conduct a number of tests. This will include walking over a pressure plate to show how you bear weight through your feet both walking and standing still. Your walking will also be videoed whilst on a treadmill for a few minutes. This recording played back at slow speed will help the podiatrist have a better understanding of your biomechanical needs. In fact, if you are interested we have made a short film of the procedure which you can access via our website.

Life&Living PROMOTION
Love your heart as well as someone else’s Visions of hearts are everywhere for a few weeks during February. But then we forget about them. It’s a cheesy link, but Valentine’s Day is a good opportunity to talk about our hearts as heart disease remained the second leading cause of death in 2017*
T
here are
lots of different conditions that affect the heart’s ability to work efficiently, which together form a collective known as heart disease. Shahnaz Fraser spent some time with Dr Cairistine GrahameClarke, Consultant Cardiologist, to discuss the common heart conditions, how to recognise their symptoms and what can be done to prevent them. Dr Grahame-Clarke, how would someone know they were suffering from a heart problem? The common denominator with most heart problems is the symptoms, which can include: • Chest tightness, or a pressure sometimes radiating to the neck or shoulders • Shortness of breath, especially on exertion • feeling sweaty What are the most common heart conditions that face people in the UK today? The most common conditions range from relatively mild heart palpitations or routine increase in high blood pressure – to potentially fatal conditions like a heart attack. Let’s go through the more common conditions: Palpitations – usually defined as ‘an abnormal awareness of the beating of the heart’, which means that the beating of your heart (whether too slow, too fast or irregular) interrupts your thoughts and makes you conscious of its beating. Don’t panic if you become aware of your heart beating when you concentrate on it, that’s quite normal. We are more likely to be aware of our heart beating as a result of physical exertion, alcohol, caffeine, or anxiety. Most palpitations are benign; the important thing is to try and obtain an
ECG (Ecocardiagram – a test to check your heart’s rhythm) when you’re having symptoms, usually through your GP. Cholesterol - Cholesterol is a type of fat made by the body that is essential for good health. However, a high cholesterol level in the blood can increase the risk of vascular disease, such as heart attacks. One of the main illnesses associated with high cholesterol is coronary heart disease. Medication is available to help lower cholesterol – it’s best to talk to an expert to ascertain the risks and benefits. High blood pressure – affects one in four adults in England.** If you have high blood pressure, you are more likely to be at risk of developing serious conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart attacks and particularly strokes. Thankfully there are many different drugs available to treat it and prevent such events. What are the more serious conditions? There are several more serious conditions that will require urgent attention if the patient starts suffering from any of the symptoms described above. These are: Coronary heart disease – when the heart’s blood vessels (the coronary arteries) become narrowed or blocked and can’t supply enough blood to the heart. Angina – a pain or discomfort in your chest, arm, neck, stomach or jaw that happens when the blood supply to your heart becomes restricted because of your arteries becoming narrowed. This usually happens because you’re doing something strenuous, or are under stress. Heart attack – a heart attack happens when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle becomes completely blocked. This can cause damage to the part of the heart muscle that the artery was supplying.
Symptoms of a heart attack can include: • Any chest pain – the chest can feel like it’s being pressed or squeezed by a heavy object, and the pain can radiate from the chest to the jaw, neck, arms and back • Shortness of breath • Feeling sweaty It is important to know that not everyone experiences chest pain. The pain can often be mild and mistaken for indigestion. Chest pain occurring on exertion and going away with rest warrants investigation. Who is at risk of developing a serious heart condition? Heart conditions can affect people of any age, indeed some people are born with heart conditions. But the risk level is increased if you are over 65, are diabetic, a smoker, are overweight and / or have a family history of heart disease. But, Dr Grahame-Clarke concludes, if you are suffering from high blood pressure or any of the more common conditions and they are managed correctly, you can reduce your risk of developing more serious heart disease. So it is important that your condition is regularly monitored by your GP. Your GP will enquire as to the frequency of the episodes, and the circumstances before deciding on the appropriate course of investigation. It’s important to be aware that if anyone is suffering from chest pain and any of the other symptoms in combination, that they should seek medical help as quickly as possible. Call 01603 255 614 to make an appointment with Dr Cairistine Grahame-Clarke, Consultant Cardiologist. Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...
ABLE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably lead either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...
Question: I want to give up smoking but need help. Is there any free support? Answer: The NHS wants to help
people give up smoking and they can offer free support which you can access via your GP surgery. The support can include:
• One to one support from an expert advisor telling you about a range of proven methods to help you give up. • Access to group stop smoking sessions plus possible drop-in services in your area. Venues could be at your local surgery, chemist, high street shop or even a mobile bus clinic. Question: I did not go and have my lu jab last autumn; can I get one now? Answer: It is advisable to get your flu
jab in October and November, but the NHS advises if you’ve missed getting the jab during these months you can still have it later in winter. Your GP or pharmacist will be able to advise you on this. Question: Are there any charities which still accept used postage stamps?
Question: Is it possible to have home deliveries of gluten free food? Answer: Many supermarkets who
deliver online orders have a range of gluten free food that you can include in an order. The following website is that of The Gluten Free Kitchen and they are a non-chain food retailer whom you may also like to visit for gluten free home deliveries. www.theglutenfreekitchen.co.uk Question: My mother wants to buy a wool blanket for her bed. Not a leece or a throw. We have visited a range of local home style outlets and local stores who advise that they do not sell them, as people no longer want them! Is it possible to purchase one anywhere? Answer: The Witney Wool Company
has been selling woollen blankets for over 60 years, both plain wool and cellular wool blankets. Their website is www.witneyblankets.co.uk
Answer: UK organisations that
still use stamps to raise money include Oxfam, Macmillan, Parkinson’s UK and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

stories from clients of how they have seen advertising or have received mail suggesting they put their money into schemes that involve overseas property, high-tech companies or other non-standard investment assets. They ask us if these schemes are too good to be true: our answer is usually “probably”. When we advise a client on building an investment portfolio, we are mindful of a wide range of factors ranging from their circumstances and their wealth, to their attitude to investment risk and level of understanding of financial markets. The word we use is “suitability”: the investment assets we recommend must be suitable for the specific client. What we don’t have is a magic wand or a goose that lays golden eggs – or indeed a crystal ball. We have a thorough understanding and knowledge of investment products and a team that monitors and tracks movements in the market but we cannot guarantee investment returns. In practical terms, this means that we must be certain that our clients understand and are comfortable with the risks associated with the investment routes we suggest.
Putting your money into a “get rich quick” scheme may seem like a good idea but, as Carl Lamb, Director and Chartered Financial Planner at Smith & Pinching explains, you need to understand what risks you are taking. We evaluate our clients’ investment risk profile and capacity for loss by discussing with them what the impact of different levels of risk could have on their investments and lifestyle in different financial conditions. Investment assets are also classified according to their risk profile and we will ensure that the risk rating of the asset is appropriate before approving its use in client portfolios. We can then match clients to investment assets, often in a risk-rated managed portfolio that provides a diverse range of assets with an overall risk rating that is suitable for the client. Under the right circumstances, higher risk investments can be suitable. A higher risk strategy might, for example, include Venture Capital Trusts, Enterprise Investment Schemes and Seed Enterprise Investment Schemes, all of which require investment in smaller, unlisted companies. Returns therefore rely on the performance of those companies to deliver growth at a naturally vulnerable point in their development. These schemes also offer attractive tax treatment, which may in fact be the main reason for making the investment, rather than the potential returns (income or gains) themselves. Many high-risk investment options are usually only suitable for what we term “sophisticated” investors – those who have extensive knowledge and experience of investments and markets and who have a good understanding of investment risk. Unregulated Collective Investment Schemes (UCIS) are investments that are
not covered by the rules and limits imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for regulated collective investment schemes. This means that regulated financial advisers are not permitted to recommend them to the general public – and they are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if things go wrong. The investment world is complex and not for the unwary. We strongly believe that advice from an FCA-regulated independent financial adviser is absolutely critical if you are to be certain that you are undertaking a level of investment risk that is right for you. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and are not advice. Any solution described may not be suitable for everyone. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

Can you help a
child fulfil their true
potential? Are you the kind of individual who can help care for a child that isn’t their own? Someone who can put a roof over their heads, food on their plates, and hope in their hearts?
T
here are hundreds
of children seeking a foster home in Norfolk. All of them need someone they can talk to and trust, someone who appreciates them as individuals and is prepared to celebrate their achievements and successes with them.
Foster Carer Ambassadors can help you step up.
The fact is, you don’t need a special skill set to become an exceptional foster carer. What you will need are qualities such as patience, understanding and, let’s be honest, a sense of humour. When it comes to age or status, whether you’re retired or working you could still foster. Whatever your walk of life, the team of Foster Carer Ambassadors can help you
step up and lead you through the process. The ‘Skills to Foster’ training programme will provide you with all the need-to-know essentials, while your recruiting social worker will always be on hand to help, advise and offer invaluable pearls of wisdom. Becoming a foster carer often turns out to be just as rewarding for you as it is for a child. In most instances, it’s you who holds the key to unlocking a child’s true potential and watching a child mature and blossom is a life-changing, and life-affirming, experience. Tracy Collins, Interim Head of Fostering of Norfolk County Council’s Fostering Service, says “The children may be feeling lost, upset, angry, confused or sad. They need a home and an adult who will care for them – and bring some joy into their lives. Our foster carers often tell us that becoming a foster carer has been the most rewarding experience of their lives and they have lots of inspiring fostering stories to share.”
