Welcome

years y

a d h t Bir It’s o u r

Happy Birthday to us! Ten years old, double figures...

the big one zero! Ten years has certainly flown by with the first edition published in April 2010. On the cover of issue one was talented local chef Franck Pontais and it was, of course, packed full of great stories, events and recipes. Little has changed over the years as Places&Faces still champions the fantastic fayre, events and talent this area has to offer. It’s amazing to think that when we were producing the first issue nobody had heard of Brexit, Lady Gaga was at number one with Telephone and Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win best director at the Oscars, for The Hurt Locker, which took six prizes including best film. Ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland dominated the headlines as all flights in and out of the UK were suspended, and we were only on the iPhone 4! Once again we have packed the pages with the best on offer for the coming weeks. With ideas for Mother’s Day (as well as some great gift ideas) and a round up of how to prize the children away from the electronics and keep them entertained. We talk about turning over a new leaf with a guide to going vegan, and have two tasty dessert recipes to wow your guests with. As we all love gin here at Places&Faces headquarters we have had a look at some of the best gins on offer in the area, including the excellent Norfolk Gin! Plus all of the usual features and columns, you will have plenty to read whilst you are toasting our birthday with a cocktail or two. This is the 120th issue, a fantastic achievement, and we have all had great fun working on this much loved local magazine and look forward to many more issues to come.

Bury St Edmunds

Festival 14-24 May

The popular Bury St Edmunds Festival returns this year to celebrate its 35th anniversary with a diverse line up of music, dance, comedy, walks and talks. Featuring 11 days packed with over 50 events across 12 venues, the festival will bring a world class celebration of culture and entertainment to the vibrant Suffolk town between Thursday 14 and Sunday 24 May.

I

n the early 1980s, the month

of May would feature Weekends of Words and Music with events across various venues in the town. By 1986 this had morphed into the Bury St Edmunds Festival. The festival will be revisiting those early beginnings and, in addition to the usual smorgasbord of wonderful music, will be teaming up with FANE for a Words Weekend to open the festivities. The line-up will begin on the 14 May with an extraordinary performance by Aurora Orchestra who will be showcasing a 35-minute presentation on Beethoven’s Eroica, with musical excerpts and spoken word, before a complete performance of the symphony from memory! This will be followed by a Words Weekend from 15- 17 May featuring national treasures, local favourites and stars of literature, radio, stage and screen. Mental health, gender roles and feminism are among the topics discussed in these open and honest conversations with celebrities, writers, actors and presenters. Jenni Murray will celebrate women from around the world, Alastair Campbell will speak openly about depression, Robert Webb will discuss modern masculinity and Katie Piper will explain how she has overcome anxiety. The packed programme will also include a book fayre, workshops, walking tours and family activities. The full line up for the Words Weekend will be revealed on the festival’s website soon.

Bones Apart, a trombone quartet showcasing the music of female composers and songwriters, will be welcomed to the festival on Tuesday 19 May. On the same day acclaimed jazz singer Stacey Kent will perform music from her new album with a 5-piece band. Wednesday 20 May will feature a performance in the atmospheric setting of St Edmundsbury Cathedral by St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra will be joined by former BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike, and conducted by former Bury St Edmunds student, Ben Palmer. Over at The Apex, Dead Ringers Live will have the festival laughing – and crying – at the state of political life in 2020, featuring the dream team: Jon Culshaw, Lewis MacLeod, Jan Ravens and Duncan Wisbey. On Friday 22 May audiences are in for a sensational double bill when ambassadors of Malian music Amadou & Mariam join forces with the Blind Boys of Alabama, living legends of gospel music.

The Athenaeum will be hosting an insideout piano recital about climate change by acclaimed pianist and composer, Sarah Nicolls. Her compelling show, 12 Years, was inspired by a 2018 IPCC Special Report that said we had just that 12 years to change our behaviour and save the planet. There will be a mix of original music interwoven with recorded speech from fictional characters challenging each other about their environmental views. Join Sarah Nicolls and Rupert Read, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia, for a post-show discussion. The following day, on Saturday 23 May, singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson will perform his new album ‘Heartbreaker’ at The Apex. The legendary crooner Tony Christie will close the festival with a collaboration with the iconic Nelson Riddle Orchestra on Sunday 24 May. It’s not just the Bury St Edmunds Festival that has a big birthday this year! The town itself will be celebrating 1000 years since the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund. To tie in with the anniversary, the festival will be holding concerts at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, including a performance by The Sixteen on Monday 18 May. 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of The Sixteen’s Choral Pilgrimage Tour. This year they will include St Edmundsbury Cathedral as part of the 1000-year landmark and have chosen Rome as a theme for their performances. Other events at the Cathedral include a Late Night Organ Recital, Festival Eucharist and Bury Bach Choir. The Apex also has its own milestone to commemorate – its 10th birthday! The venue will be hosting over 23 events during the festival and will have a new exhibition entitled ‘A Year in the Life’ that depicts behind-the-scenes photos of the venue in all its glory. Local photographer Geoff Price has been following The Apex’s journey for the last year, recording events seemingly big and small, as well as day to day life of the staff, acts and crew. Tickets are available from 24 February. The full line up can be viewed at www.buryfestival.co.uk 17

ot for the first time in his acting career, James Backway, who plays Stanley Yelnats, finds himself sharing the stage with some convincing animal puppets who almost steal the show. In Holes, the puppets are pretty scary snakes, lizards and tarantulas, but a few years ago James was playing second fiddle to Joey, the stunning puppet horse in the iconic show Warhorse. James played the role of Albert Narracott for over a year before the London show closed to go out on its second UK tour in 2017. He is very self-effacing about starring in such an iconic show: “I didn’t do any puppeteering. I played the boy Albert

which was fun. The horse is kind of magic and a legend, so I always feel a bit of a smug idiot talking about Warhorse because it really is all about the horse!” He is adamant Holes is also a very special show: “I think it is one of those big epic shows that you can bring pretty much any age to from about six up. It has so many components of puppetry and songs and movement, and if you are a fan of theatre and have seen stuff where you think ‘I would have loved to have been in the room when they made that’, then I think this is that show. It’s been a real pleasure to be in it and we want to show it to as many people as possible.”

James credits Adam Penford’s creative genius as a director and co-designer Matthew Forbes and associate puppet director Meghan Treadway for bringing to life the animals of the desert. He said: “They have built some really amazing puppets. They have both worked on Lion King and Warhorse and have really set the bar for puppeteering. If you are a fan of those shows, you should definitely come and see this. “No matter what kind of exposure you have had to Holes before, or even if you are completely new to it, you can jump straight in and you end up loving the characters very quickly, which is great. It’s amazing because you can really feel the audience’s investment by the end of it and the level of connection they have with the characters based on their empathy with them.” While audiences could perhaps draw comparison between Albert in Warhorse and Stanley in Holes, are there any similarities between James and the character he is currently playing? “Well, I am a bit of a people pleaser,” he said. “We found something in rehearsals about the way Stanley’s need to please people sometimes gets him in trouble, and if you don’t stand up for yourself but let people walk all over you then that’s not a good thing. But I don’t have any pig stealing great great grandfathers as far as I am aware.” And if you don’t know what his last comment refers to, then you really do need to come and see the show! Holes runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from 15-18 April. www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Art Caravan

Latitude launches 2020 Art Caravan competition with Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces co-host Will Hardie, with 14 grants of up to £2,000 for artists, architects, theatre makers, performers and creators.

A

fter a riotous debut in

2019, Latitude Festival’s Art Caravan competition returns in 2020. Latitude has once again teamed up with Will Hardie, the master craftsman behind Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces and Shed of the Year to offer several madcap designers grants of up £2,000 to build and showcase a conceptual caravan creation at this year’s festival. Latitude is renowned for its trailblazing production where music and arts collide in a full on cultural explosion. The bustling colourful bonanza of Trailer Park was a standout success at last year’s festival so promoters are upping the ante for 2020 with 14 grants of up to £2000 for the boldest creators around. The concept is simple - turn a caravan, vehicle or trailer into something implausibly wonderful and Latitude will give it a home from home in Trailer Park, a haven of comical caravans, converted campers and magical mobile homes. The hope is that Trailer Park will become a creative greenhouse for artists to present large-scale installations. Artists, architects, theatre-makers, performance groups and creators of all sorts, with an appetite for what makes a festival really sing, are being invited to submit their most amazing designs. The most jaw-dropping and inspiring ideas will be developed into this ‘mobiletropolis’ set within Latitude. A judging panel led by Will Hardie and Trailer Park directors Roz and Hugo Jellett will choose the best ideas (or the best sounding creators) and work with them to bring the wacky designs into being. Winners will be invited with a team of friends to host the creation at Latitude. Will Hardie commented: “I’m so delighted to be involved for the second year in this competition - I love how Trailer Park supports the creative visions of people who would otherwise never have a chance to join the world of festivals, and the concept of harnessing the public’s

passion for Latitude’s artistic values. The idea of transforming the humble caravan into so many wonderful and wacky creations is part of the story - but to then be given the opportunity to unveil your work at the most artistically respected festival in the UK is pure genius. From my television work, I have come to understand that Britain is home to so many alternative thinkers who demonstrate incredible vision, ingenuity and skill in the projects they build at home, and this competition coaxes them into the public eye.” Trailer Park artistic director, Roz Jellett said: “In Trailer Park we really do set out to make people laugh, inspire and engage. We are on the look out for projects that marry creativity, participation and style. This competition loves a good host, so if you have a gang of friends who like to make people around you have fun, simply think of how you might do that in the most unusual way either inside or in front of a room on wheels.” Trailer Park originated at Electric Picnic festival in Ireland, where over 75 grants have been awarded. It arrived at Latitude’s Henham Park for the first time last year and funded 11 creators. Some of the incredible ideas that materialised at Latitude 2019 included:

• Caravan-o-slide-o-saurus - Which was a caravan turned into a slide coming out of a dinosaur’s mouth • Spiderman - Where the caravan was the spider’s body and with its huge legs around it • Caravanaoke - A squash of people into an old caravan to sing their favourite songs while the whole thing bounces on springs • Sensorium - which interactive experimentation included smoke guns and making slime • Pop Up Potts - A pottery maker caravan • Promo Oddity - A celebration of space cabaret, Birmingham style • Keep Calm and Caravan - Which looked ahead to the year 2040 and the post Brexit landscape of high rise caravans • Fire Garden - A pyro-technic installation based out of a horse box The deadline for entries is 21st March, so it’s time to get creative! Entries should be submitted via the website: www.form.jotformeu.com/FRMarketing/ Latitude-2020-TP-Application Any further questions should be submitted to: trailerparkcaravanchallenge@gmail.com

I

t would seem now that whatever the age of your mini mes, the never ending battle to get them away from a screen is tireless. So I have a few ideas of activities that may be completely new to you or just reminding you of things that are fun and interactive in a different way. Whatever you choose to do, whether it is inside or out, embrace your own inner child, detach your real child from the screens and have some fun together.

Elizabeth Parker suggests lots of different activities to get the children away from electronics over the Easter break

of your child they will love chocolate. There are so many places to go out and about and enjoy the outdoors with the bribery of having a chocolate egg at the end.

Salt dough recipe Ingredients 1 cup salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup lukewarm water

Easter tree!

Trees don’t have to be just for Christmas. Go to the local woods or even out into the garden and grab a fallen twig. Paint it - pastels are seasonal, brights are fun - and decorate it as your artistic side desires. Shop bought eggs and fluffy chicks, paper eggs and bunny rabbits or salt dough Easter creations. The choice is yours! Salt dough creations: salt dough is fun to make your own shapes or decorations, then let them dry and paint them. Either stay with the Easter theme or make your favourite shapes and creations. BEWILDERWOOD

Method In a large bowl mix salt and flour. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency. With your hands form a ball with your dough and knead it for at least 5 minutes. The longer you knead your dough the smoother it will be. Store your salt dough in an air tight container and you will be able to use it for days. You can paint your creations with acrylic paints and seal with varnish or polyurethane spray. Let your salt dough creations air dry, however salt dough can also be dried in the oven. Bake at 95˚C until your creation is dry. The amount of time needed to bake your creations depends on size and thickness; thin flat ornaments may only take 45-60 minutes, thicker creations can take 2-3 hours or more. You can increase your oven temperature to 170˚C, your dough will dry faster but it may also brown, which won’t matter if you are painting your entire creation (you can also cover your dough in the oven before it turns brown).

Paint eggs It really is as easy as hard boiling eggs for 10 minutes, then straight into cold water and paint with either food dye or children’s paints. Remember if you put wax crayon patterns on anything and then paint over it the wax pattern will remain there.

Chocolate nests We all have that box of cereal in the cupboard, be in rice crispies, cornflakes or shredded wheat. All are easily transformed with your favourite melted chocolate into nests. Add a few sweets, mini eggs and the odd fluffy chick and an edible treat is made.

Tie dye Colourful fun that can be messy so get your area prepared. I recommend buying a tie dye kit for the best results but with the edition of knots and elastic bands you can turn any item of clothing into a unique and original pattern.

Arty and creative? Yes please but can I take the mess somewhere else? Pottery cafes are an absolute treat for all that are able to hold a brush! Choose your ceramic and let your imagination run wild. Then enjoy a relaxing coffee and cake. Below are just a few to try: Dotty Potty, Hellesdon Barns, Norwich. Doodle Pots Ceramic Café, Holt. Willow Gallery, Poringland. Sticky Earth Café, Cromer. Jars of Clay, Rendlesham, Woodbridge.

The Wizards of Once Cressida Cowell Set in an ancient, magical time of wizards, warriors and sprites. Wizard boy, Xar, should have come in to his magic by now, but he hasn’t, so he wants to find a witch and steal its magic for himself. The beginning of a series to get lost in. SOUTHWOLD

HOLKHAM

Beaches:

whatever the weather or time of year!

I don’t know about your

children but mine always have a bit of a moan about going to the coast and then when it comes time to go home you can’t get them off the beach, no matter what the time of year! Here’s a few different types of beach to take your fancy. I have to start with my own personal favourite, Southwold. It is such a beautiful and classic place to visit. The beach starts at one end with lots of sand and space for the children to run around in and as you walk along the seafront towards the unique pier that Southwold has to offer there is plenty to see and enjoy. Stop and have a drink along the seafront or at any point you can go into the town to wander around the shops and delightfully quaint places to frequent. The normal pattern I have with my boys is to walk across the seafront and then walk up past the lighthouse and through the church yard at the back of Adnams to the children’s playground. Aldeburgh has a shingle beach. Great for looking at different stones and the beautiful sculpture of the metal scallop shell, standing proud on the seafront between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness in memory of Benjamin Britten. Cley Marshes Nature Reserve offers a beautiful piece of coastline to explore and look at nature. The 5 mile walk along the reserve features many bird hides in perfect position to really get to know nature. Great Yarmouth Seafront known as The Golden Mile offers a huge variety of activities for all age groups including many rides for the younger child at Joyland theme park. Walk up the Golden Mile

past many places to eat and take part in archetypal seaside activities. There is also the Pirates Cove 18 hole Golf Park, the Sealife Centre and arriving at The Pleasure Beach with rides for the older children. Holkham’s golden sandy beach stretches for miles and is perfect for sand castles and picnics on the beach. It is also surrounded by a lovely pine woods for exploring. If the weather is not wonderfully warm, then nip up the road to Holkham Hall and explore the hall and grounds.

about the animals and see them up close by watching an array of encounters. You can also feed some of the gentle giants at public feeding sessions with the elephants and giraffes! As you walk around the zoo there are also plenty of play areas to try out, including the indoor soft play area and Jungle Tumble, so the children can release their wild side! Colchester Zoo has a selection of egg-cellent Easter activities such as a woodland walk, Easter crafts and an Easter egg trail. Adults £24.99, children £18. Save 15% when you book online.

PG | Animation, Adventure

NEW FROM Disney Pixar is an adventure set in a suburban fantasy world which sees two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. Voices from Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Chris Pratt. Released: 6 March

Peter Rabbit 2 PG | Comedy, Family

Mulan PG | Action, Adventue, Drama | Released: 27 March DISNEY have a lot going on at the moment. With new franchise releases imminent, original story animated features and the Disney+ streaming channel due on 24 March in the UK, we can forgive them for another live-action remake of this 1998 classic. But this is not just another example of lazy film-making to rake in the box office dollars. This re-imagining of the gender battling storyline is just as relevant now as it was over twenty years ago.

Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Yifei Liu) secretly takes his spot, however, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly takes on the guise of a young man and heads off to war. Yifei Liu is excellent in the leading role, along with solid supporting roles from Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jason Scott Lee and the legendary Jet Li. Well worth a watch.

EVERYONE’S favourite rabbit returns and is voiced again by the lovable James Corden. Peter is feeling like everyone only sees him as rebellious, so, when Bea and Thomas decide to go on a trip, Peter sees this as an opportunity to go on the run. Released: 27 March

The Roads Not Taken

IF YOU fancy something a little different then this could be the one for you. Kelly Reichardt directs the screenplay she wrote alongside Jonathan Raymond. A loner and cook (John Magaro) has travelled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee). The men join forces and go into business, however its longevity is reliant upon the participation of a wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.

SALLY POTTER’S film follows a day in the life of Leo (Javier Bardem) and his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), as she wrestles with the challenges of her father’s turbulent mind. As they weave their way through New York City, Leo’s journey takes on a hallucinatory quality as he floats through the alternate lives he could have lived, leading Molly to battle with her own path as she considers her future. Yet another stellar performance from Javier Bardem who seems to have a sixth sense for gritty roles.

Books

Elizabeth Parker suggests titles for your March reading list

Joining a reading group - either online or in person - is a great way to expose yourself to books you might normally have overlooked or missed... here are four fantastic reads I was recommended by some of my reading group friends.

The Hunting Party

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

Pieces of Her

The Silent Patient

by Karin Slaughter

by Alex Michaelides

by Lucy Foley

by Gail Honeyman

A Karin Slaughter book is

This will have you gripped

I will be honest: when I first

started reading this book I stopped and started another. I just couldn’t get into the book. A work colleague of mine had read this in an afternoon, so I went back and did not stop. A group of thirty-something friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition that started in the carefree days ten years ago as students. This year Emma chose an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands — the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. The story embellishes the intricacies of the relationships between them all and each chapter has a different member of the group sharing their thoughts and feelings of each others’ behaviours, their united past and also their own insecurities. But it appears after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy and within the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps. Now one of them is dead... and another of them did it.

30

This story is a beautiful

read about loneliness and the power of a little kindness. Straight away I fell in love with Eleanor Oliphant. Maybe it was the fact that she seems to be different from everyone around her, and as you read through the book it becomes clear that her personality is as a result of the difficulties she has had through her life. She struggles with social normalities and has a low expectation on her own life. Same clothes to work, eats the same meal for lunch and buys the same two bottles of vodka every Friday to drink at the weekend. Then she meets Raymond, a bumbling, not particularly hygienic IT guy from her office. Together they help to save Sammy, an elderly gentleman. The three of them help to rescue each other from the isolation of loneliness. Ultimately Raymond’s big heart helps Eleanor to learn how to love. This book is a truly original literary creation that will have you both laughing and crying and rooting for Eleanor every step of the way.

pretty much guaranteed to be a good read and this does not disappoint. Andrea Oliver’s mother, Laura, is the perfect small-town mum. She lives a quiet but happy life in sleepy beach-side Belle Isle. Everyone knows her. Whether it be as a speech therapist, business owner or just a friend. Andrea believes her mother is not the kind of person who could possibly have any secrets, let alone have a different life. When Andrea is caught in a random violent attack at a shopping mall, Laura intervenes and acts in a way that is unrecognisable to her daughter. Laura is hailed as a hero for her actions at the mall but 24 hours later she is in hospital, shot by an intruder, who has spent decades trying to track her down. What is Andrea’s mother trying to hide? As elements of the past return and put them both in danger, Andrea is left to piece together Laura’s former identity and discover the truth. Who is or was the gentle woman Andrea knows? A gripping thriller from start to finish.

from the moment you read the first page. Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to a fashion photographer, living in a grand house overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. The couple are living what to the outside world seems an idyllic life. Then one evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, Alicia shoots him in the face, then never speaks another word. Alicia’s response, her refusal to talk or to explain what has happened and why, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander: a mysterious event that captures the public’s imagination. Her infamy causes the price of her art to rocket, and Alicia is the silent patient hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight. Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations. His dogged search for the truth threatens to consume him and once you pick up this book you will also be consumed.

CHEQUERS INN

awarded two AA rosettes FOLLOWING an incognito overnight stay in late January, the AA has awarded The Chequers Inn at Thornham a fantastic two rosettes for ‘Culinary Excellence’. Their critique of The Chequers’ food, which has undergone a transformation since Head Chef Jordan Bayes took the helm in November 2019, says: “Great to see Jordan really stamping his own mark on the dining. Menus have been completely overhauled and have clear identity and direction, a focus on quality and provenance. Very well deserved indeed!” Unaware of the inspector’s visit until she was leaving, Jordan himself is still shocked, and delighted that the report showed how he and his team are creating consistent quality across all meals and dishes offered at The Chequers Inn. “It is a proud day in my career,” he says. Alongside this accolade for food, The Chequers has comfortably held onto its three silver star small hotel status, with an AA merit score that’s 10% higher than the national average for this grade. Particular mention is made in the inspector’s report of the warm hospitality, cleanliness, ‘strong product’ in all eleven bedrooms and the ‘wonderfully restored’ bar area. www.thechequersinn.com

The English Whisky Co. It achieved four golds in the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky category for The English Virgin Oak, The English Smokey Oak, The English Smokey and The English Original, while The Norfolk PX Mixed Spirit took a further gold in the World’s Best Grain Based Spirit Drink category. Lacons - Audit Ale THE FABULOUS Audit Ale from Lacons won Bronze in the Barley Wines and Strong Ale category at the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) Winter 2020, held in Birmingham. Brewed at Lacons’ Falcon Brewery in Great Yarmouth, Audit is an 8.0% ABV barley wine, copper in colour with prominent flavours of berry fruits and spice. Deceptively smooth to drink for a strong ale, the finish is satisfyingly warming and sweet. Audit was crowned Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2019 at the GBBF Winter in Norwich, and demand for the ale has been high over the past 12 months. “We’ve had a lot of interest in Audit since last year’s award” said sales director Ivan Brooks. “It was always a popular choice at the local beer festivals due to its rich flavour and relatively low ABV for a barley wine.”

FAIRFIELDS FARM has launched an exclusive charity pack to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity in memory of local school girl, Lizzie Bramall. The new Lightly Sea Salted crisps are produced using the red-fleshed Red Emmalie potatoes, a delicious crisping potato; while the eye-catching pink packaging aims to link in with The Brain Tumour Charity logo. The charity is close to the hearts of Fairfields Farm co-founders, Robert and Laura Strathern, as their son, Angus, was in the same class as Lizzie Bramall, who died in November 2018, nine months after she was diagnosed with Diffuse Midline Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumour of the brainstem. Fairfields Farm will be packing 36,000 150g bags of the crisps, which will be sold through East of England Co-op and independent food stores nationwide, RRP £1.89-£2.25 per 150g bag, with 20p from every pack sold going directly to the charity. The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Jarrold offers refill service for Norfolk Gin Norfolk Gin is easily recognisable, packaged as it is in beautiful Wade ceramic. If you’re coming to the end of your current bottle, fear not – take a trip to Jarrold’s deli and get it refilled for £37 – that’s £5 less than buying a brand-new bottle. This is the latest step in Norfolk Gin’s already impressive efforts to become a sustainable business. Their artisan, straw-coloured tipple is handmade in Norwich using the bathtub method, which steeps its botanicals slowly for a distinctive flavour. Visit www.norfolkgin.co.uk to find out where to buy your first (and last) bottle.

Gin distilling experience at The Gin Academy, Norwich If you’re ready to give your own distilling a go, look no further than the aptly named Gin Academy. Your recipe is kept on file at the distillery, so it can be reproduced once you’ve ran out! Three cocktails are supplied throughout the day – distilling is thirsty work. pring is here, and I’m really happy to see it arrive. Not just because of the sense that warmer weather is just around the corner, but also because some of my favourite ingredients are coming into season. One of the first I look for is forced rhubarb, which our friends up north made so famous. From a simple Sunday crumble to a fantastic chutney for cheese, I’ve always found myself looking forward to what I consider a seasonal treasure. Here is a recipe that lets the rhubarb sing. This recipe is simple, and sometimes this is all you need when you have such a fabulous ingredient.

INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4

Poached rhubarb 1kg fresh rhubarb cut into batons 500g sugar 500g water 6 star anise Rhubarb sorbet 500g fresh rhubarb thinly cut 500g water 350g sugar 3.5 xanthan gum (you can find this in your gluten free cooking section) Rhubarb jam 500g fresh rhubarb thinly cut 500g pectin sugar 200g water Vanilla cheesecake 500g cream cheese 500g double cream 100g icing sugar 1tbs vanilla extract

METHOD Poached rhubarb

Place your batons of rhubarb in a suitable container ready to store. In a pan bring the sugar and water to the boil. Add the star anise and boil for two minutes to allow the spice to infuse. Take the stock syrup off the heat and immediately pour over the rhubarb and cover. We are using residual heat to cook the rhubarb; once cooled this will be ready to use.

Rhubarb sorbet

Blend all the ingredients together in a blender then heat the mixture to 95˚C. I use a wonderful piece of equipment called a thermo mix. Once cooked the xanthan gum will have thickened the sorbet mixture, then pass through a fine sieve and cool. Pour this mixture into an ice-cream maker and reserve for use.

Rhubarb jam

Combine all the ingredients together in a jamming pot then cook to 104˚C to activate the pectin. Blend whilst hot and pass through a fine sieve, then allow to cool. You just made rhubarb jam! This is great on a nice piece of sourdough toast.

Vanilla cheesecake

Place all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until stiff peaks are formed. Then pipe into ring moulds and chill in the fridge for several hours before serving.

To serve

Place the cheesecake onto a plate, then decorate with the poached rhubarb, rhubarb jam and your homemade rhubarb sorbet. I use a little meringue on the plate for texture and to stop the rhubarb sorbet from moving about and garnish with a little mint.

Suffolk Rhubarb Gin & tonic This month why not try this fantastic gin with Fever Tree light tonic and garnish with some of the poached rhubarb and the star anise. The gin itself is fresh and vibrant, full of rhubarb flavours with a hint of vanilla. Tangy and tart on the tongue, silky smooth on the finish and irresistibly moreish.

M

y journey

to vegetarianism started with a classic, teenage fall-out with my mum. I grew up in Norway where a lot of the food is very meat orientated. Whenever we went on school trips, I would go hungry for hours and refuse to tuck into traditional meatballs, lamb or reindeer salami. I insisted to my mother I would become a devout vegetarian overnight and she didn’t think I would manage it. Ten years later, I am still proving her wrong. We made a compromise after a few months, I would try to incorporate a ‘bit of fish’ into my diet — the city we lived in was a former fishing town. Since then, I have tried every variety of pescetarianism, vegetarianism and veganism that exists.

colleagues often wind me up, offering me salad leaves and plain pasta. Here’s the thing — I am an athlete, my diet is very varied, full of protein, very far from boring and I can eat for England! Plant-based eaters benefit from a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the Journal of the American Heart Association. The lifestyle choice has also been proven to promote gut-health and a regular digestive system. Despite concerns over gaining enough protein and B12 from a plant-based diet, humans require a very minimal amount of protein and B12. It is very easy to get this from nutritional yeast or plant-based milk replacements. I answer the protein question very regularly — people don’t believe I can thrive as an endurance athlete without meat in my diet. Between 5-10% of our diet should be protein based, and protein is found in every food. We would suffer a calorific deficit before suffering from a lack of protein.

Veganism has grown a reputation

for being a fad diet in recent years, people are forever cracking jokes and waging internet war on “militant vegans.” I am not here to tell you eating meat is evil, or everyone should change their diet overnight. Whether you are veggie looking to go vegan, or a meat eater wondering how you can hide veggies on your plate, there are many benefits to moving towards a more plant-based diet. Small changes can have a large impact on both your health and the environment. There is a very popular misconception that going more plant-based involves eating a lot of “rabbit food.” My work

I will be the first to say you shouldn’t become vegan overnight — it has to be an enjoyable experience, and even having one vegetarian or vegan day a week will be a kind change for you and the environment.

increased energy levels ( just ask my coworkers about my excessive dancing on shift), healthier skin and more regular sleep patterns. By balancing a healthy diet with exercise and other positive habits, I boosted my mental health and happiness. I will be the first to say you shouldn’t become vegan overnight — it has to be an enjoyable experience, and even having one vegetarian or vegan day a week will be a kind change for you and the environment. If you are starting slowly with trying to incorporate more vegetables in your diet, think small snacks you can carry with you. I got a lunchbox for my birthday and nothing makes me happier than stuffing it to the brim with homemade snacks like kale crisps or overnight oats for late shifts at work. I always keep fresh fruit on the kitchen table, if it is easily accessible, I am more likely to make a healthy choice than reach for the crisps and biscuits. When visiting the shops, I always pre plan my meals and write a shopping list. If I have a list, I am less likely to impulse buy junk food. It is very easy to add more veggies into classic, hearty meat dishes. My favourite is chilli because you can make a huge pot ➤➤

Furthermore, if your diet incorporates a wide variety of vegetables, pulses, beans and leafy greens, you will take in every vital amino acid needed. The proof is in the pudding as more and more athletes transfer to plantbased diets. Lewis Hamilton, Venus Williams and David Haye are amongst the ever-growing pack of elite athletes transitioning to a vegan diet. On a personal level, I experienced

➤➤ to share with family and friends, or keep for a healthy lunch option later in the week. A good chilli, in my opinion, always has onions and a rainbow of peppers in it, whether you choose to add meat is up to you, but the vegetables soak up all of the wonderful seasoning and flavours as it simmers. Further down the line, you may opt to swap mince out for Quorn, or lose it completely. My chilli is bulked out with chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils and some sweetcorn. Season with ground chilli, cayenne pepper, cumin and cinnamon. Throw some avocado on top and serve with some fresh, crusty bread. This will keep you full for hours, and freezes well. I hate the stereotype that plantbased and veggie food must be boring, healthy, superfoods. Everyone will have a slightly different set of reasons for transitioning to a more plant-based diet, and everyone deserves the right to indulge in comfort food or something sweet. My personal favourite treat to make is vegan peanut butter cups, perfect for a pick-me-up straight out of the freezer. There are so many vegetarian cookbooks and recipes out there now, and many recipes can be adapted to be vegan using plant-based milk or cheese substitutes. And you don’t have to miss out on delicious restaurant experiences either. With an array of vegan restaurants in Norwich you’re spoilt for choice! One of the most popular vegan restaurants in Norwich, The Tipsy Vegan, specialises in American style comfort food such as tempeh ribs or mac and cheese, plus they have a range of specialty cocktails to compliment.

Meet the HEART STREET VEGAN Evie-May Ellis founded Heartstreet in 2019 and has been touring East Anglia with the vegan street food company ever since. Catch up with her and where you can find her food on Instagram @heartstreetvegan, or email her at hello@heartstreetvegan.co.uk. What changes did you notice when you quit eating meat? In truth the first month was hard. I felt very different and my body took a while to adapt to the new diet, however I did go from heavy meat eater to vegan overnight so not surprising! But then everything just settled and I felt SO good! I lost weight, developed better muscle tone (with exercise obviously!), slept better, felt more awake and alive and just generally actually enjoyed my food more. Why is it important to have dedicated vegan restaurants? I think the need for dedicated vegan restaurants comes from the ‘mainstream’ restaurants not providing the right offering. That’s why I set up Heart Street, I just got sick of being left out or paying for food that the chef didn’t really care about. How do you come up with ideas for new dishes? Selfishly I literally think about what I want to eat! I’ll be cooking at home and think, ooh wonder if I can turn this into something for the stall. I read recipe books, follow a lot of vegan social media pages and take inspiration from everywhere. I’m not a chef so some of my combinations probably seem a little bizarre at times but I just love eating good hearty food in whatever form that takes.

Funday Roast (MB is my nickname for my mum, short for Mum Baggins due to her being little like a Hobbit!) What tips would you give a meat eater thinking of going veggie/making a change to their diet? Firstly - good on you! Secondly, define why you are doing it. Lots of people become vegan for different reasons; animal cruelty, dietary reasons, to get fitter, to help the environment... really think about why you are doing this. When it gets hard you need to come back to that reason to keep you on track. Also, go easy on yourself, you are still making a change and trying your best, and that really is the most important thing. www.heartstreetvegan.com

What is your favourite Heartstreet dish? 100% it’s got to be the Funday Roast. A roast dinner was the cornerstone of my childhood! It was always a big affair with my nan buying the best cuts of meat and all the trimmings being laid out in silver dishes on the table. I’ve never eaten before or since in that way! A roast dinner to me is a meal that has to be eaten with people and just brings such joy. My mum then perfected the veggie roast and that translated its way onto the stall in the shape of MBs 49

Strike a pose on a family photoshoot In the age of Instagram, we’re used to most of our photos being stored and displayed digitally - which makes printing out and framing photos of treasured memories even more special. Gather the whole clan and surprise your mum with a professional photoshoot. There are a vast number of talented photographers based in Norfolk and Suffolk who can guide you to picture perfection, whether in a studio or at a location that’s special to you as a family. If you’re really organised, you could even do the shoot a few weeks before Mother’s Day and present her with a framed print as a gift on the big day.

ICE Cook School class, Bury St Edmunds With a class to suit every gastronomic curiosity and ability, this is the perfect gift for budding chefs, foodies and Heston Blumenthal wannabes. Boasting two masterchefs of Great Britain amongst their full-time chefs, the ICE team will give you and your mum a culinary experience you won’t forget. Courses range from full or half days covering subjects from breads of the world and knife skills to patisserie for beginners or kids club options. Gain new skills, build your confidence and then take your delicious creations (and the recipes to make them again) home for everyone to devour. Classes range from £40-£500 Book at: www.icecookschool.co.uk

Go skydiving at Beccles Airfield If mum’s a bit of a daredevil, what better once-in-a-lifetime gift than this? Many people have a skydive on their bucket lists, but only a few get the chance to actually experience the thrill for real. Opt for a tandem skydive and the plucky recipient will be attached to an experienced instructor, who will be with them through the 15-minute ascent, guide them out of the plane and fly them safely back to earth, while they enjoy breath-taking views across Suffolk. If you’re feeling really brave, you could book to do one together – just be warned, this will be a hard experience to top! One-person tandem skydive: £240 Book at: www.ukparachuting.co.uk 54

Alpaca Trekking, Wells-next-the-Sea If mum is an animal lover, you’ll be hard pushed to find a more memorable day out; alpacas have such comic faces and distinctive characters, it’s hard not to be delighted by them. Become an alpaca trekker for the day with guide Ian and his group of friendly, emo-fringed Peruvian and Chilean alpacas. Walks can be from an hour to 3.5 hours in duration and take in the bridleways and stunning coastal paths around Wells-

next-the-Sea and Stiffkey. Be sure to bring some chopped apple to feed your charge afterwards and prepare for some fantastic selfie opportunities. Price: from £45 Book at: www.alpacatrekking.co.uk

&Beauty ITH MOTHER’S DAY

this month it’s a time to celebrate that person who has always been there for you; or for those without a mother it can be a time to celebrate that female role model with whom they have a special bond. It’s a chance for families to be together but what to get that special person who has everything? Aphrodite Studio is based at Potters Resort in Hopton. Potters is the longest running family owned resort in the UK offering a five star experience, and recently won the National Accolade at the I-News Staycation Awards; but what I didn’t know is their spa is also open to non-residents. It offers everything from waxing, a nail bar, facials, lash and brow treatment to massages to name but a few. Mother’s Day is of course a special time and Aphrodite offer luxury packages so you, and that special person, can get away, relax and unwind in tranquil surroundings. As part of their ‘Quality Time Together’ package, our day started at The Palms Health and Fitness Club which gives you access to the gym, heated swimming pools, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi, for which towels and robes are provided. Following some relaxation we met Ana Cunningham, the manager of Aphrodite, who gave the warmest welcome. The spa has recently been refurbished with numerous treatment rooms, a special area for pedicures and a nail bar. Flickering candles 4 and vintage style mirrors in a neutral colour scheme made me feel immediately relaxed. The first part of the package is an Aromatic Back Aromatherapy Massage, using warmed Decleor Aromessence Svelt Body Refining Oil Serum with grapefruit, patchouli and jojoba seed oil. Ana always

ensured I was comfortable and with the heated beds I was transported away. Her attention to detail is outstanding. At the end of the massage a hot compress takes away any excess oil and the Decleor Arnica Invigorating Gel is applied to increase circulation and sooth away any remaining muscle tension. Next was a ‘Head in the Clouds’ Head and Scalp massage. My face was cleansed as this can form part of the treatment, then Decleor Green Mandarin Balm was applied to the face whilst Aromessence Glow Serum from the same range worked it’s magic during the head massage, including citrus essential oils to re-energise and hydrate. Ana was so attentive during the treatment, introducing me to the Decleor Antidote Hyaluronic Acid Serum; for me serums are the most important part of my skincare and with amazing clinical results and being 97% natural it’s on my list to buy next. My final part of the treatment took place in the spa’s fluffy soft robes, enjoying a glass of champagne in their Pedicure area, experiencing ‘Fantastic Feet’. This treatment for the lower legs, feet and toenails includes file, cuticles, foot scrub and rasp, followed by a foot and leg massage and hydrating mask whilst in heated booties - absolute heaven! My Shellac application in ‘Satin Pyjamas’ gave a long lasting gel polish being chip and smudge proof. A light lunch can also be provided (at an additional cost) to extend your stay including juice, wine or champagne. The whole experience was amazing with my feet still feeling soft and weightless days later. It’s something I’d highly recommend as a Mother’s Day experience or to enjoy with a relative or friend. To spend special time together feeling relaxed and showing someone you care. And I hope one day despite having sons, they will think to treat me in the future!

Mothers Day is of course a special time and Aphrodite offer luxury packages so you, and that special person, can get away, relax and unwind in tranquil surroundings.

This month hairdresser Emma Jarvis looks at younger looking hair...

E LOOK after many ladies each week in the salon – whether they are mums themselves or not, many clients are now on the lookout for a special treat for their own mum. This Mother’s Day, why not give the gift of youth – who’s going to say no to that! In the modern world we live in and with all the stresses of everyday life it’s definitely the dream of most women to turn back the hands of time and look a bit younger. As hairstylists we hear this all the time when a client sits in the chair looking at themselves in the mirror. “If you could make me look 10 years younger!” they say. “Sure we can!” is always my answer. I know most ladies feel skin products are the only way to look younger, but hair can play such a massive part in giving you a fresher, younger glow and hair care plays its part too. One way of making you look younger could be by changing your hair colour or hairstyle, however if you are not ready for that sort of change you can make a huge difference with hair products and in-salon treatments. This is why in The Hair Base we stock the Kerasilk range –

their holistic hair care products are infused with silk and keratin to keep your hair looking more youthful. Did you know your scalp ages six times faster than your face? This means looking after your scalp is as important as looking after your face – and the healthier the scalp, the healthier the hair that will grow from it. This is why I recommend the amazing treatments and products from Kerasilk, as well as our scalp revitalise insalon service. This beautifies hair by protecting against and counteracting the key signs of scalp ageing, giving your hair a youthful look and feel. The main benefits of these scalp products and the in-salon treatment service is that it is packed with ectoin, an active ingredient which shields and protects the scalp. It also protects the hair follicles, helping to reduce any inflammation. Most importantly, ectoin acts as a shield from the full spectrum of UV rays, which are very damaging to both the scalp and hair, as well as your skin. So if you want to lock in your colour or battle the frizz these are the ranges for you.

Mother’s Day

A form of Mother’s Day can be traced right back to the Ancient Greeks who held a Spring Festival worshipping Rhea, “The Mother of Gods”.

(not to be confused with Mothering Sunday!) was devised in America by Anna Jarvis in 1905 in recognition of her peace activist mother and was first officially celebrated in 1908.

Over the years,

Mothering Sunday

became a day when domestic servants would be given the day off to visit their “mother church” and meet up with other family members, as were children and young people who were working “in service”.

t’s March – spring is with us - the

daffodils are cutting great swathes of yellow across our beautiful countryside and nature is gifting us new life wherever we look. With longer days and the soil warming it’s a busy time in the garden and an equally busy time in the garden centre. All garden centres have been hectic during January and February stocking their shelves in readiness for the spring splurge of activity. Now is a great time to freshen up the soil and apply a little mulch to feed the soil and plants - and as you work through the border there’s still time to do a little dividing of perennials. With some of these emerging and noticeable above ground it is easy to navigate your way through the border without fear of trampling the crowns of the plants. There is also still time to plant bare rooted plants such as top fruit, soft fruit, roses or any trees or shrubs. It is an old gardener’s adage that this should be done by St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th! Containerised plants and bare rooted evergreens can still be planted out, but don’t let them dry out, so apply some mulch to help avoid this. The spring flowering bulbs may also require a little bit of tidying and now is a great time to lift and divide those which have finished flowering. Take off any faded flowers and seed-heads and tease out the bulbs and their leaves and replant them individually about 60-75mm apart. Many people get in to gardening to grow vegetables – there is nothing quite like rearing your own carrot! If this is you then it’s a busy time - many of your main crops to be raised from seed can be started in a gently-heated propagator if the ground is still too cold outside, but remember to lift them into a cooler, but well-lit place as soon as the shoots appear as this will prevent them from becoming spindly and weak. The seedlings will need turning, ideally a quarter turn a day

Think pots and containers for exuberant displays of English shrub roses such as Roald Dahl, with lush apricot blooms and a medium fragrance. Or to reach dizzying heights, on walls and pergolas try a rambling rose, such as Malvern Hills, which will easily reaching 4.5m and which produces soft yellow blooms throughout the summer. For a more diminutive climber, think Gertrude Jekyll, with bright pink voluminous petals and a heady strong fragrance to boot. There really is a rose for every garden in the David Austin range.

TH E HO RTI CU LTU RA L HU B

Plants of the Month:

Roses & Hebes With meteorological spring just beginning my thoughts always turn towards getting going in my garden. It doesn’t matter what the actual weather is doing, I still feel an energetic buzz of anticipation, not only with the physical stuff - weather permitting - but also in planning and adding to the displays of flowers and foliage I already have - after all a garden is never really finished. Although there are literally thousands of suitable plants for any garden, two enduring favourites, particularly of our customers are: roses and hebes.

Firstly roses: you cannot fail to be lured

by the heady fragrance and bodacious bundles of tightly packed petals found in a David Austin rose. David Austin Snr. O.B.E is considered one of the greatest rosarians and rose breeders of all time, creating in his lifetime over 240 English roses to his name and leading the way for new roses to be developed into the future. Each variety is selected after a vigorous breeding programme lasting nine years, before its introduction to the general public. That’s dedication to the task! Quality, fragrance, repeat or long flowering and good disease resistance are the cornerstone of a David Austin rose. Although they are more pricey than your average rose, they certainly standout from the crowd: as this living gift of beauty, they will certainly shatter all your expectations.

Secondly the hebe for endurance, versatility of leaf colours and flowers that the pollinating insects go wild for, you cannot beat a well grown hebe. Originating from New Zealand there are now over a 100 species available. Thriving in full sun but tolerant of light shade, these evergreen shrubs boast foliage in red, purple, green, yellow and pink hues; topped with either white, pink or purple sprays of flowers from late spring to late summer. Light pruning after flowering is all you need to do. Low maintenance and wind resistant they make excellent seaside garden plants. Ensure good drainage and light loam for best results. For a new and interesting variety try something like hebe Rhubarb and Custard: with striking green foliage marbled yellow and red edged leaf tips. Add into this plant recipe delicate violet flowers in late spring, for a marvellous feast for the eyes. Ideal for a pot/container or in the front of a garden border, it reaches from 0.5-1m maximum height and spread. So, as you can appreciate there is plenty of choice from these stalwarts of an English country garden, whether you choose the more traditional English bred rose, or plump for plants originating from loftier shores, there is much to beautify your own growing space. Come and see what we can tempt you with! THE BAWDESWELL GARDEN CENTRE Norwich Road, Bawdeswell, Dereham, Norfolk NR20 4RZ Tel: 01362 688387 www.bawdeswellgardencentre.com

Springtime at

Seven Acres

A

wet and windy winter is behind us, thank goodness, and the warm days of spring are here… sunshine, warmth and summer to come. I’m so ready for the sun on my face… to be outside and enjoy the fresh air and positive vibes that nature has to offer. But, if there’s still a chill I always love to have spring flowering plants indoors. They give such enjoyment and will survive quite happily short term on a windowsill.

My favourite spring plants for indoors include… Blue muscari, known as grape hyacinths, are also available in white, they grow from bulbs and are such an easy plant to have in the house. When the flowers are finished simply pop them into the garden, perhaps near a door or path, where they can be admired next spring. Lily of the valley, my mum’s favourite,

will soon be emerging in the garden, but to enjoy the unique scent, dig up a small clump and lay moss over the surface. In the warmth the white flowers will soon emerge and fill a room with delicious perfume.

Double primulas, in lovely pastel

shades of apricot and pink, these remind me of raspberry ripple ice cream, a sure sign that spring is near.

2020 is going to be the year for growing fruit and vegetables! The pleasure and satisfaction of “growing your own” is now being enjoyed by more and more people. The physical and psychological benefits of growing, tending and then harvesting your own food is well worth the effort… go on, give it a go! Even if you don’t have a large plot, a couple of large pots or troughs will be enough space to grow some salad crops such as radishes, spring onions, lettuces and tomatoes. Try some new potatoes… the taste of home grown is so good! For an average-sized garden a raised bed is an easy way to concentrate your vegetable growing in one space; weeds are less of a problem and having the growing area “raised” means the space is easier to tend. I grow crops I know have the best flavour and benefit from being picked and eaten as needed… lettuce leaves that you cut as you need, served with tomatoes and peppers sliced still warm from the day’s sun with a thinly sliced mini munch cucumber… mmm perfect! In the nursery our two large polytunnels mean we can prepare young plants for the growing season in advance. The strawberry crop is now planted and with some warm sun by Easter we will be picking and selling the delicious fruit at the nursery. As the weather warms up we will have tomato plants for sale so you can grow your own in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours, from yellow to deep black… and, of course red, delicious sliced and served with goat’s cheese. Courgettes, beans, squashes, cucumbers and peppers will also be available as strong sturdy plants. So, if you’re tempted to have a go… come over to Seven Acres Nursery and see our range of vegetable plants as well as our seasonal garden plants, shrubs and grasses.

At Seven Acres Nursery the

Posh Plants range of topiary trees are for sale and hire. If you have a wedding, party or event, hiring trees is a cost effective way of introducing greenery. Posh Plants have been proudly growing plants and supplying beautiful trees for over ten years. We pride ourselves on offering an excellent product and first class service… we are always happy to chat about plants (and the weather!)... Happy gardening!

Finally, we are seeing a shift away from bare to more flamboyant décor. A resurgence of bold patterns and colours are seen through a lot of pieces. At The Granary there is a brand that encapsulates all of this thinking - Finnish brand Marimekko, which offers a selection of ethically sourced products from high quality materials. Home decoration products include everything from vases and lamps to blankets and cushions. Our favourite design is the Räsymatto classic pattern. Inspired by allotment gardening this pattern is linked to current trending themes of sustainable living and urban nature at its best.

Make 2020 the year where you express your personality through your home choices. As William Morris once said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. One of our favourite brands that inspires this sentiment is Notre Monde. Founded by a self-taught artist the brand blends luxury with practicality by creating sophisticated collections of trays, mirrors and nesting tables. Simply choose your one-of-akind functional tray designed to fit your side table to add a pop of colour to your dinner party, or alternatively use the tray as art for your feature wall. All pieces are designed to be intentionally timeless so rest assured your chosen piece will add inspiration for years to come.

PRING AND THE promise of warmer weather and longer days is finally on the horizon. For The Granary, this automatically kicks in the age-old adage of ‘spring-cleaning’ and seeking out new ways to improve the home, whether it’s replacing tired looking furniture or injecting some colour to freshen up a particular space. The exciting trends in home this spring 2020 reverberate around your own individuality. There is a call for abandoning the rule book and designing your home to reflect your personality and creating spaces or picking pieces that tell a story.

Ditch the plastic We are all becoming more eco conscious and trying to shop more sustainably whether it is in our fashion, beauty or home. Surrounding ourselves with natural materials is something that resonates with a lot of people and a trend that is set to continue into this decade. One brand that has invested into this ethos is Kristensen & Kristensen, a Danish brand that prides itself on high quality craftsmanship and specialises in custom made design. Their passion for old crafting methods is reflected in their designs. Working with solid wood, where each piece is truly unique, creates an effortless, natural look and feel with the emphasis on material and craftsmanship. dull or dated kitchen but putting off the makeover because of the cost and disruption it will cause? If so, you are in good company. Mazda

CX-30

T

HE MAZDA CX-30 is the

second model in the company’s next generation line-up and the second to feature the ground-breaking Skyactiv-X spark-controlled compression ignition engine. Combining the bold stance of an SUV with the sleek profile of a coupe, its styling is a sophisticated evolution of Mazda’s KODO design philosophy, while its spacious and versatile cabin ensures it has the practicality and comfort demanded by customers in this popular sector. Available in five trim levels – SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech - the new CX-30 features Mazda’s characteristic generous standard equipment across the entire range, and is offered in the UK with a choice of two petrol engines, both of which feature the 24v Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid system. While Mazda is committed to diesel and the development of next-generation clean diesel engines for appropriate sectors, the abilities of Skyactiv-X and diminishing consumer demand for diesel engines in the compact SUV segment mean that in the UK the Mazda CX-30 will be exclusively petrol. The Mazda CX-30’s petrol engines adopt the company’s intelligent Mazda M Hybrid system as standard. Compact and efficient, the mild hybrid system features a beltdriven integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 24V lithium-ion battery. It supports greater gains in fuel economy by recycling energy recovered during deceleration and powering the ISG, functioning as an electric motor, to assist the engine. The ISG converts the recovered kinetic energy into electric power and stores it in the lithium-ion battery. The system then uses a DC-DC converter to transform that voltage to the appropriate level, and supplies it to the car’s electrical equipment. Adopting the belt-driven ISG also

delivers a refined drive feel by enabling the system to provide drive assist and helping the engine restart more quickly and quietly after shutting down for idling stop. The lithium-ion battery is mounted between the wheels, minimising its impact on interior space, while helping to optimise weight distribution and contributing to collision safety. The Mazda M Hybrid system’s brake-bywire technology smoothly and dynamically blends electric and friction brake forces to maximise both stopping power and energy recuperation efficiency. Not only does it offer short braking distances with high levels of vehicle stability, but also - through the transformation of electric brake force into use-able energy - further reductions in CO2 emissions.

The CX-30 features a generous standard equipment tally across the whole range with every car featuring a colour windscreen projecting head-up display, radar cruise control and LED headlights to name just a few of the high-grade items found on every model. Visually, the CX-30’s sleek upper body hints at the streamlined silhouette of a coupe, while the black cladding lower down, and the CX-30’s dimensions deliver the sense of rugged stability you’d expect of an SUV.

T

HE REVOLUTION has begun, and it’s electric. The face of motoring has changed, and as we all get more and more eco-friendly, car manufacturers are changing along with the buyer’s trends. Once again the SUV market share in the UK increased in 2019, seeing a +12% rise compared to the year before. Other increases were seen in alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) which rose in popularity by a whopping +20% on previous year. AFVs include categories such as battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and mild-hybrids (petrol and diesel). The demand for SUVs is evident with many of us preferring the higher ride height and functionality for our everyday lives. Long gone are the days of these vehicles being thirsty lumps and newer technology sees much more nimble and economically viable options available. Not to mention with some great advancementsthey are kinder and cleaner for the planet.

KUGAPlug-In Hybrid

Ford’s most electrified vehicle ever

T

THE SLEEK, SPACIOUS

all-new Ford Kuga SUV has a distinctive design, a comprehensive electrified powertrain lineup and new driver assistance technology for the most efficient, comfortable and rewarding Kuga experience ever. A comprehensive powertrain line-up includes the Plug-In Hybrid, EcoBlue Hybrid (mild-hybrid) and Hybrid (fullhybrid) variants – making the Kuga Ford’s most electrified vehicle ever. The driving range and freedom offered by a traditional combustion engine works alongside the efficiency and refinement of an electric powertrain. The power-split architecture combines a 2.5-litre, fourcylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, electric motor and generator, and 14.4 kWh lithium-ion battery to produce 225 PS. Ford’s first plug-in hybrid in Europe to deliver a pure-electric driving range in excess of 50km, the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid is anticipated to deliver from 1.2 l/100km fuel-efficiency and 29g/km CO2 emissions. The battery can be charged using a front wing mounted charging port, and is automatically replenished on the move using regenerative charging technology that captures kinetic energy normally lost during braking. It is anticipated that to

fully charge the battery from an external 230-volt electricity supply will take around 4 hours. Drivers can choose when and how to deploy battery power using EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge modes. When the battery reaches its lowest state-of-charge, the Kuga automatically reverts to EV Auto mode – supplementing petrol engine power with electric motor assistance using recaptured energy for optimised fuel-efficiency. New Stop and Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring technologies help drivers negotiate stop-start and motorway traffic with a greater confidence than ever before, while predictive curve light and sign-based light help drivers see more clearly in the dark. A head-up display technology helps drivers to keep their eyes on the road ahead, and Active Park Assist 2 enables fully automated parking manoeuvres at the push of a button. Add to this intuitive comfort and driver assistance features including a FordPass Connect embedded modem, wireless charging pad, and 12.3-inch LCD “true-colour” instrument display. Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe said, “The all-new Kuga is our best example yet of Ford’s human-centric

design approach; developed in close collaboration with SUV customers to deliver distinctive style, unprecedented powertrain choice, premium comfort and advanced technologies that make life easier for owners inside and outside of the car.” The all-new Kuga is the third generation of Ford’s mid-size SUV for customers in Europe since the nameplate’s introduction in 2008. Ford has sold more than 1 million Kugas in Europe since. The new exterior design is more sculpted and simplified with premium proportions. A more streamlined silhouette incorporates a longer wheelbase that creates a larger footprint on the road, benefitting ride and stability; a longer bonnet; further reclined rear windshield angle; and lower roofline. The result is a more energetic, nimble and capable appearance than ever before. Comfort, spaciousness and flexibility are key to the occupant experience that delivers class-leading second row roominess. Now 44mm wider and 89mm longer than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase has increased by 20mm. Inside, that translates to 43mm more shoulder room and 57mm more hip room in the front seats, while rear passengers benefit from 20mm more shoulder room and 36mm more hip room. Despite an overall height that is 20mm lower than the outgoing model, all-new Kuga also has 13mm more headroom for front seat occupants and 35mm more in the rear. For rear seat passengers, heated outer seats are available for the first time, and the entire second row of seats can be moved backwards for best-in-class 1,035mm rear legroom, or forwards to increase boot space by 67 litres. A remote release function enables the second row to be folded flat with ease. Spacious, practical and well connected the all-new Kuga introduces innovative engineering, advanced comfort and convenience technologies that help the vehicle seamlessly integrate into customers’ lives. Head along to Pertwee and Back in Great Yarmouth to test drive this ground-breaking SUV.

Karen Randell

K

aren Randell is an

experienced podiatrist and clinical director of Randell’s Footcare. Randell’s offer excellence and expertise for all issues affecting the feet and lower limbs in their seven clinics across Norwich and North Norfolk. They are one of the most successful podiatry practices in the country and their team of clinicians aim to provide the latest in podiatry techniques, including a specialist biomechanics service. This month Karen talks to us about a common foot problem – the verruca. Most of us will have heard of verrucae, but tell us what they are and how are they caught? Verrucae are warts that commonly occur on the soles of the feet. Around 10% of the population have a verruca. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are passed from person to person by direct contact. For instance, if you use communal changing rooms in swimming pools, it is possible for the virus to transfer from the floor to your skin, especially if you have any cuts or scratches. Children, teenagers and young adults are particularly prone to picking up the virus, but we do see people of all ages in our clinics. How would I know if I had got one? Most verrucae are painless, but if they develop on a weight bearing area, such as your heel, you might notice an area of hard skin which causes pain and can affect the way you walk. In the early stages, verrucae can appear as a discoloured blemish or whitened area of skin. Sometimes the virus can quickly develop into clusters of tiny verrucae. They can also have black dots appear which is due to leaking of small blood vessels into the verruca. A fairly easy way to tell if it is a verruca is to pinch it, (as you might squeeze a spot).

Verrucae tend to hurt if they are pinched but not if they are pressed. So, if I ind I have one, can I treat it myself? Well, evidence suggests that most verrucae will disappear by themselves within 2-5 years, so if you are not experiencing pain then it’s probably best to let nature heal them. We think that immunity to the virus is built up over time, which is why it’s probably more common in the young. However, some verrucae can be painful, especially if they are on a pressure point as your body weight can help cause hard skin to develop over and around the verrucae. Some, which spread quickly or are very unsightly also require treatment. Often patients with verrucae are embarrassed to show their feet in public, so seek treatments rather than wait for many years for them to go of their own accord. Over-the-counter ointments and gels are available; the ones containing salicylic acid have been shown to work best. However, often these remedies can be ineffective, expensive and can damage healthy skin if not used correctly. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, have autoimmune conditions or have multiple painful verrucae then it really is best to seek professional help. What verrucae treatments do you offer at Randell’s? We offer a range of treatments for verrucae depending on size, length of time they have been present and your budget. They range from cryotherapy (freezing) and acid therapy to the very latest treatment options, Swift Microwave Therapy and Plasma Pen Technology. These options would all be discussed with you at your first appointment. The podiatrist will be able to remove the hard skin to make the area more comfortable for you, assess your verruca, determine if there are any contraindications that would prevent you from having any of these

treatments, and then arrange a treatment plan for you. Many of us will have childhood memories of verruca socks during swimming lessons – have things moved on at all in terms of prevention? Can I protect myself against infection? The virus that causes verrucae has been shown to thrive in warm, damp environments such as changing rooms, swimming pools and communal showers. Verruca socks are still available and can help protect feet, as can using flip flops in the changing room or showers. We would recommend using a protector spray such as Excilor 3-in-1 which dries within seconds to create an invisible barrier between our skin and the floor. Much less embarrassing than verruca socks! To protect against any infection, it is important to keep your feet as healthy as possible, using cream to prevent hard skin and covering any abrasions or cuts. The important thing to remember is that the pain and embarrassment of verrucae are not something you just have to live with. There is help available, so don’t suffer in silence.

T

he hip joint

can withstand repeated motion and a fair amount of wear and tear. This ball-and-socket joint is the body’s largest joint, and fits together to allow fluid movement. Whenever you use the hip – every time you walk or even shift position in your seat – a cushion of cartilage helps prevent friction as the bone moves in its socket. With all this regular use, and people living for longer, it may come as no surprise to find that the number of hip replacements being performed is increasing. So Shahnaz Fraser of Spire Norwich Hospital spoke with Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Ben Davis, about this common procedure. Mr Davis, why would someone need to have a hip replacement? “It is mostly down to the genes we inherit. The quality of the cartilage, which forms the bearing surface of our joints, and the shape of the hip joints varies from person to person. In some people the cartilage wears out at a young age, and in others it seems to last forever! Certain types of injury can also lead to arthritis developing. Once symptoms have started, patients can control symptoms with pain relief and physiotherapy. But if these treatments stop working, then surgery may need to be considered as an option. The average age of a person who needs a hip replacement is 65, but we treat people over this age, and much younger patients too”. So what are the symptoms they would be experiencing? “Most patients will have lived with pain and loss of function for some years before reaching the point of needing a new hip. Typically, patients complain of groin and thigh pain, but also back pain, and pain to the knee and below. Some patients only complain of pain at the knee and undergo investigations and treatment to their knee joint before the correct diagnosis of hip arthritis is reached. The pain often leads

to disturbed sleep, and tends to get worse with increased levels of activity. Day-today activities, such as putting on socks, housework or gardening become painful or more challenging. Patients may also notice that they’re limping or walking unevenly. In very bad cases, they become unable to walk more than a few steps as the hip joint seizes up completely”. What else could cause hip problems? “There are many structures around our hips that can also cause pain and affect its function. Inflammation in the tendons and soft tissues (bursitis) commonly leads to patients seeking treatment. Referred pain from problems in the lower back is also common, as well as from conditions such as hernias”. What does a hip replacement involve? “The removal of the damaged hip joint and insertion of a new artificial joint is a common procedure, but there are different methods of performing it. All types of total hip replacement involve removing the ball of the hip joint, putting a new lining in to the hip socket and a new ball to go in the new socket. Many factors determine which type of hip replacement is used and how the procedure is performed. The surgeon will discuss and explain the options available and the merits of each technique. However, the overall function and outcome of all the different types of hip replacement are the same”. And will a hip replacement last a lifetime? “It’s a common misconception that “they only last 10 years”. Whilst it’s true that the younger a patient is when the replacement is performed, the greater the chance of it wearing out - which is why it’s better to wait for as long as reasonably possible before having surgery - the vast majority of patients who have a hip replacement will never need to have it changed.”

PROMOTION

Hip Hip Hooray And how long would it take to recover after surgery? “The patient is likely to stay in hospital for two or three days, during which they will receive physiotherapy. Most patients are able to go back to work, or their normal day-to-day activities within six weeks, although manual work may take longer. Recovery continues for around a year, and the majority of patients can forget they even have an artificial hip. Keeping active both before and after surgery is of great benefit”. What are the risks? “All operations have risks associated with them and the surgeon should explain these prior to surgery. Hip replacements are commonly performed and are one of the most successful operations carried out on the human body”. Is there any alternatives? “There are very few alternatives to hip replacements when treating hip arthritis other than pain and activity management”. If you are experiencing pain or reduced function in your hip it’s important that you see your family GP in the first instance. Or call 01603 255 614 to make an appointment with Mr Ben Davis, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...

ABLE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: Do I need to register a mobility scooter before going on to the roads? I may buy one and need to know the facts. Answer: The only type of mobility

scooters that can be used on the roads are known as Class 3 ‘invalid carriage’ or road mobility scootes. These scooters must be registered with the DVLA with a valid tax disc, which is free. The maximum speed which you can travel at is 8mph and you are not allowed to use bus or taxi lanes, motorways or cycle tracks.

Question: I have a medical condition and ind it diicult to get to appointments outside of my home. I need to have some dental work done but I am unable to travel the several miles to see my dentist. Are there dentists who could come to my home? Answer: For people who may not be able to get to their dental practice because of a disability or medical condition there is the Community Dental Service. How Disaster-Proof is

I

We’re used to insuring our tangible business assets like buildings and machinery, but there are other disasters that could derail your financial survival. Carl Lamb, Director and Chartered Financial Planner at Smith & Pinching, explains…

’ve heard many business

owners say that their most valuable asset is the team of wonderful people who work for them: this is so true in almost every case. The fact is that every business has a number of people who are critical to its success. This could be the business owners themselves or key members of the team who have critical knowledge or business contacts, without whom the business would be in trouble. Having accepted that there are people who are central to your business success, it follows naturally to suppose that you should insure your business against their loss – both in the short and the long term. It still amazes me that business owners don’t put this at the top of their priority list: they insure their premises, equipment and vehicles but fail to insure against the crippling effect of business interruption caused by losing a key person. Key person insurance is a policy taken out by the business and the benefits are paid to the business when a situation covered by the policy arises. It pays out a lump sum if a person named in the policy dies or is diagnosed with one of the critical illnesses specified in the policy. You can cover the business owners or any member of the team whose absence would have a significant impact on the profits of the business. The policy can also be set up to include protection for the repayment of business loans. The insurers often have legal helplines as well as access to a dedicated nurse to support the named individual’s family or colleagues. The pay-out can be used for anything you want at that stage. It could, for example, be used to keep the business going if profits take a dip while you put emergency measures in place, ensuring that you can pay staff and meet regular bills. Alternatively, it might be used to

recruit or train someone to take over the role of the person who is absent. Other protection plans can be useful for different business scenarios. Shareholder protection, for example, can be set up by a company in conjunction with a shareholder agreement to cover the death or critical illness of any one of a group of insured shareholders. Like a key person policy, shareholder protection is taken out by the company and the company will be the recipient of any pay-out. If an insured event occurs, the protection will provide a cash injection to enable designated individuals (such as other shareholders) to purchase the deceased shareholder’s stake in the business from his or her estate, thereby retaining control within the shareholder group. There are similar policies for partnerships, where protection and an accompanying partnership agreement will allow the remaining partners to buy the interest in the business held by a partner who has died or is diagnosed with a critical illness. This is particularly important for traditional partnerships (as opposed to Limited Liability Partnerships - LLPs), where without a suitable agreement the partnership would be dissolved and the deceased partner’s heirs would be entitled to their share of the business. Under an LLP, the partnership will continue on the death of a partner but the deceased partner’s share of profits would be payable to his or her estate. Protection policies are a cost to the business but, as with all other forms of insurance, they provide the reassurance that the business can continue, should disaster occur. Without this type of cover, your business could be vulnerable. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and are not advice.

The

Peoples’ Picnic Elizabeth Parker speaks to a person just like you or I who does her little bit to help others... Tell me a bit about yourself... I am a full time working mum. I am a Progress Leader for Year 7 students at a secondary school in Great Yarmouth and I teach science. My two boys are 5 and 10 in age. So with SATs coming up for my eldest you could say that it is a particularly busy time. I am passionate about reading and like all of us I am striving to fit in that bit of time for my relationship with my husband as well as me time. You could say that I am an expert juggler! What charity are you involved with? Peoples’ Picnic. I am a volunteer for Peoples’ Picnic which is a grassroots charity for the homeless and hungry of Norwich. We aim to feed and support people who need a warm home cooked meal. I aim to cook twice a month, usually on a Tuesday evening. How did you get involved? I have always felt that it is an absolute travesty that in this day and age we have people who do not have even the most basic of needs met, to eat. There has been an increase in the use of food banks and my children’s primary school always do a collection at harvest festival for food banks which I always donate to. When my eldest first went I did not appreciate that they had to carry the food into the assembly and have a very fond image of a small 4-year-old struggling with the bags of food I had sent in. So when my colleague at school talked about what she was doing I offered to give her money and food towards it to begin with. She asked me if I would like to come and see what it was all about. So I went along. Firstly I made a pudding

to contribute, then a main meal and then became a fully-fledged volunteer. People who are struggling and homeless are often considered to be not part of our civilised society. A generalised perception is one of people who have issues, often linked to substance abuse and have caused the issues themselves. For me I think it is important to be able to help people who need that extra bit of support. Whatever your own perception of people, when you actually see people as people, that could be your relative or friend, you can’t help but want to help in any way that you can. They say that we are only a couple of pay checks away from being on the street. I have also had the shock of seeing an old friend of my husband’s come and see us for food. Since becoming involved I have also bought homeless people in Norwich hot drinks to help warm them. I think it is also important to remember that people need feeding all year round and not just at Christmas or during the winter. How does it work? Every Tuesday and Saturday Peoples’ Picnic have three volunteers who bring a main course and a dessert. Each volunteer aims to provide enough to feed thirty people. There are also volunteers who support with the queue and handing out plates etc. We also have food available on a small food bank basis and also clothes, blankets or sleeping bags, particularly at this time of year when it can be bitterly cold and wet. There are also some people who bring cold drinks, a lady who comes to provide pens and paper and stamps so people can get in touch with family and friends.

How could other people get involved? Easily! On a basic level you could help your local food banks by buying a couple of extra items in your shopping and these days most supermarkets have collections for food banks near the tills. If you would like a more hands on approach you can look for a group in your local area where you can help feed the homeless and hungry. If you would like to help Peoples’ Picnic, there are several ways to do that: • Food bank donations, clothing, sleeping bag, blankets and ‘fill a sock’ can be taken to Brewdog in Norwich or you can contact Peoples’ Picnic on Facebook to arrange delivery. • Similarly, if you would like to help with the Tuesday and Saturday sessions either by donations or becoming a volunteer please contact Peoples’ Picnic on Facebook. • Peoples’ Picnic also have an amazon wish list. thepeoplespicnicnorwich @kcpeoplespicnic
