N or folk & Suf folk

Welcome Have you, like me, done a lot in the past few months that you wouldn’t normally do. I have baked bread and painted a pot elephant, planted potatoes and entered quizzes via Zoom. All of these things have helped to keep my mind focused. Volunteering to cook wholesome food for the homeless once a fortnight helped to give me purpose. But now, as we find things slowly returning to something that is a new version of normal, we should look back on the past few months ensuring we do not let go of some of the new skills and perspectives we have gained. Embrace what we have learned and head into the next chapter. The current guidelines are always evolving and giving us a way we can all work together to manage the situation the world currently finds itself in. Pubs and restaurants have opened, and, although things are not the same, I certainly enjoyed my first G&T in the sun sitting in the beer garden of my local. It was enjoyed responsibly with social distancing, PPE and hand sanitiser. This is all part of the new experience which will, in time, become second nature. In this issue we have lots of places to go and things to see, as well as plenty of things to keep you occupied at home. Now is certainly the time to enjoy the company of friends and family. So what are you waiting for... get reading, and then get out there and enjoy the summer.

T Houghton Hall

HE LARGEST exhibition of outdoor sculptures by the celebrated British artist Anish Kapoor will go on show at Houghton Hall in Norfolk for the exhibition Anish Kapoor at Houghton Hall. The exhibition was originally due to open in March 2020 but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A number of measures, including pre-booked tickets, will be put in place following government guidelines to allow visitors to experience the works at Houghton Hall. The exhibition will feature 21 sculptures as well as a selection of working drawings from Kapoor’s ground-breaking practice that has spanned the past 40 years. Presented together, this series of works will challenge the classical architecture of the house and the idyllic beauty of the grounds, whilst being in continuous dialogue and engagement with Houghton’s history. Anish Kapoor is one of the most influential sculptors working today, known for creating ambitious public sculptures adventurous in both form and engineering across vastly different scales and materials. Exhibition on until 1 November 2020 (Selected Days) £16 (Students £10, free to under 18s). Tickets must be pre-booked. www.houghtonhall.com

Next Chapter

Summer is back on, so let’s not waste a minute of enjoying ourselves - whilst supporting local businesses too, says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich 08

Out&About

W

e’ve an awful lot to catch up on. After

spending hours gardening, exercising, binge-watching Netflix and baking – possibly home schooling too, Norwich and the county are opening up again. And if you’ve been working all the way through lockdown surely it’s time to treat yourself. Now is the time to re-discover Norwich, the City of Stories. This is Norwich’s Next Chapter. To mark the start of summer and the end of lockdown, VisitNorwich has made a film. A film with local people by local people. A lively, textural film with hope and optimism at its heart. You may well have already seen it, but in case you haven’t head to Norwich, The Next Chapter on visitnorwich.co.uk. Norwich is waking up again. As the weeks go by the streets are steadily getting busier – in a good way. The buskers are back, the Big Issue sellers are back, and the welcoming faces of the City Hosts are back. Thank goodness. Familiarity breeds confidence, and there is much in Norwich you will be familiar with. Fish and chips from The Grosvenor, Norwich Market for essentials and supplies, Sir Toby’s Beer for a cold brew and John Lewis, Jarrold, Marks & Spencer, intu Chapelfield, Castle Quarter for everything else. And the list goes on. But there are inevitably changes too, the impact of Covid-19 has been raw and far-reaching. So, it’s more important than ever that – this Summer – we bring something positive to the table, its important that we get out and about in our communities, supporting local, enjoying the breadth of choice around us. This is something hopeful. Unifying. Some streets in Norwich have become pedestrianised to allow for social distancing but also in anticipation of outdoor tables for cafes and restaurants. Watch this space. You will see floor stickers for where to queue and directional chevrons for which way to walk. You will need to do a bit more planning before heading out like checking opening times, days of operation and booking a table. You can no longer try on clothes in store, but you can try them at home. And you need to wear masks on public transport and in shops. But, Norwich is still vibrant, it’s still looking good, its still ours to explore and enjoy. Waffles, afternoon tea, Indian, light lunches, glasses of crisp white wine – or bottles, and cocktails are back on the menu. We can sit in or sit out. And there are now more options than ever for a take-away carried into lovely green spaces or to dive into at home. Daytime - get back to The Britons Arms with its lush secret garden, the smells of food from around the world at Norwich Market, traditional teas at The Assembly House and Jarrold’s Pantry, Wine bar and Chapters Coffee Bar. Day and night return to: Bowling House (though not bowling) – don’t let that stop you; The Cosy Club, The Ivy, Frank’s Bar, The Giggling Squid, Namaste, The Waffle House and Zaks. Now is also the time to try somewhere different too: not going out has given us time to dream about trying something new. The city’s green spaces have been buzzing, filled with people socially distancing and catching up over picnics and coffee in areas such as the Memorial Gardens, Chapelfield Gardens, St Gregory’s Green, Castle Gardens and the Cathedral Gardens. It’s been lovely to see people’s intimate moments, sharing time together once again. There are walkers around Riverside and the University of East Anglia, at Eaton Park, discovering The Marriott’s Way, enjoying nature at Whitlingham Country Park.

Of course, you don’t need to be a tourist to book an overnight stay or a short-break in our local area. A summer holiday is important to so many of us, and there’s plenty of people who have missed anniversary’s, birthdays and special dates. There is still time to celebrate. I always think there’s something comforting knowing that you’re not going too far, for one thing you don’t need to pack everything but the kitchen sink. Talking of sinks, whilst self-catering stays will always be popular, we’ve heard on the grapevine that for many this year, the top criteria when booking accommodation is that it DOESN’T include a kitchen sink. There are plenty of us that want breakfast in bed made by someone else, and to skip the inevitable debate about what to prepare for dinner come evening. And attractions are opening. In the city centre: Plantation Garden, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Crazy Golf at Eaton Park, Paul Dickson Walking Tours and Norwich Cathedral. If you’ve missed art, then book a private appointment at Caroline Fisher Projects in the Norwich Lanes to see the latest exhibition ‘Clay Conversations’. The Sainsbury Centre has two exhibitions running as well as their permanent collection. Art Deco By The Sea and Art Nouveau: The Nature of Dreams. Both have been extended; to 20 September and 3 January 2021 respectively. To supplement your craving for art, move online. OUTPOST Gallery is an artist run gallery and studio complex in Norwich and currently facilitates a programme of five exhibitions per year. However due to social distancing they have a Summer Programme showcasing a range of creatives through remote artistic activity between now and September including live-steaming every Thursday evening. Particular mention must go to Anish Kapoor at Houghton Hall. This exciting exhibition has been delayed since March but thank goodness it’s been able to open. The headline piece is Sky Mirror, a huge convex mirror set in the grounds reflecting the sky. Constantly changing, it brings the sky to the earth in a spectacular and dramatic way. As does the collection of mirrors in the Stone Hall in colours of cobalt blue, magenta, Pagan gold and apple. The reflections of the hall pick up the intricacy in the ceiling, the marble surrounds and the changing light. Nationally, interest to see Kapoor’s work has been high so as it’s on our doorstep every effort to see it should be made, it’s been extended until 1 November. And it’s value for money too at £16 per adult and free for under 18s (tickets must be purchased online). Car parking is included, toilets are open, and as well as 29 pieces in the exhibition there are the permanent outdoor artworks to see and acres of gardens and secret areas to explore and run around in. From the permanent art my particular favourite always remains James Turrell’s Sky Space. Around the county we also have Holkham Hall, Pensthorpe Natural Park, Fairhaven Woodland and Water Gardens, Raveningham Gardens, Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens, BeWILDerwood, Amazona Zoo, Banham Zoo, Africa Alive and Roarr! Dinosaur Park. It’s time to get out of the house and make up for lost time. For updated information, local interviews and stories plus itineraries and ideas for where to stay and visit this summer go to Norwich, The Next Chapter on visitnorwich.co.uk.

K before you go Before you set off on your trip make sure you have done your research says www.visitnorfolk.co.uk & www.visitsuffolk.com

S

ummer is here, your

favourite attractions and places to go are reopening and you’re desperate to blow away the cobwebs with fresh air and outdoor activities. But before you swap your quarantine couch for the coast, your patio for a safari park, or your dining table for socially distanced picnics, we recommend checking out our in-depth guide around domestic travel so you’re in the know before you go. Plenty of visitor attractions in Norfolk and Suffolk are beginning to welcome us back in their own unique ways. From prebooked time slots to one-way routes with your pooch, there are plenty of measures in place to help you enjoy your days out to gardens, safari parks and historic castle grounds with confidence.

Start planning

Before taking your first steps on your next adventure it is worth checking out these organisations for more detailed information on what’s open and how you can visit: Forestry Commission, Woodland Trust, Broads Authority, National Trust, English Heritage, RSPB, RNLI, Natural England, North Norfolk Coast AONB, WWT Welney, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Suffolk Coast AONB and Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust

Protect the landscape by ensuring you are following the Countryside Code, which sets out how visitors to rural areas can behave safely and responsibly. It is important to check out the updated Countryside Code, which you can find at: www.gov.uk/government/publications/ the-countryside-code/the-countrysidecode.

Enjoy responsibly

When out and about, we need to remember to look after ourselves, one another and the environment around us. So, to make sure we’re all doing our bit to tread lightly and travel responsibly, we’ve put together a few simple steps to help you enjoy your days out as safely as possible. When planning your trip, check that important facilities – like toilets and car parks – are open, before you travel so you’re not caught short. If you have an attraction in mind, please check online to see if you need to pre-book a time slot. Some places may be extremely popular, so get off the beaten track and discover a hidden gem that you can brag to friends about. Keep one metre apart from anyone outside your household – this not only applies to walking, but running, cycling, sitting and sunbathing too. Wear your face covering at all times when on public transport like buses, trains, taxis and minicabs. Also shops will require you to wear your face coverings and failure to do so could result in a fine. To keep up to date on the latest guidelines visit: www.gov.uk

Make sure you have a bank card; many outlets are currently only accepting cashless payments – and you don’t want to miss out on that ice cream! Take hand sanitiser with you – you don’t know where will be open for you to wash your hands. Leave the car behind where possible and visit nearby attractions by walking or cycling. And here are a few more for you to bear in mind when exploring outdoor spaces: Let’s try our best to keep Norfolk and Suffolk’s outdoors looking beautiful by putting all rubbish in the nearest bins or taking it home if bins are full. Whilst enjoying the great outdoors more, you’re likely to come across wildlife (cute!). Try not to disturb them, or any farm animals for that matter. Keep your four-legged friend on a lead and remember to bag and bin any mess they leave behind. Don’t use disposable barbecues as they risk causing wildfires – get a takeaway burger instead. Stick to designated footpaths and follow local signage for restrictions on routes. Now we have all of that covered it’s time to get out there and enjoy your next adventure in the beautiful surroundings of Norfolk and Suffolk.

www.visitnorfolk.co.uk tells us the best secret beaches off the beaten track

N

orfolk has some Premier

League beaches, including Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Hunstanton and Cromer. Oh yes, and the beach voted by readers of BBC Countryfile magazine as the best in Britain at Holkham, right next to Wells-next-the-Sea with its 200 higgledypiggledy multi-coloured beach huts.

Scratby

Situated between the busier beaches of Hemsby and Caister, Scratby is an altogether quieter proposition, ideal for fishing and swimming. Dogs are allowed year-round too, so it’s a great place to stretch your legs with your four-legged pals.

Happisburgh

Not so much for its beach but because of what it stands for. This is Deep History Coast, where the earliest evidence of man in the UK has been found, a family of four people from 850,000 years ago. And, would you believe it, scientists think they were rockpooling. This was in the days when this was the last stretch of land connected to the Continent.

Caister-on-Sea

Just north of Great Yarmouth, Caisteron-Sea is the quieter younger sibling who keeps themselves to themselves, but what a fabulous, unspoilt beach. There are a number of services and amenities, but Caister has more than enough sand space to go round.

Eccles

The name Eccles comes from the Latin ecclesia meaning church so it’s likely this was an early British Christian site. There’s no longer a church here, just a small community of pre-second world war bungalows called the Bush Estate (an early holiday retreat), but it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many people.

12

h isburg Happ beach

But there are others where you can escape the crowds and you might just feel that you’re Robinson Crusoe on your own desert island. So here’s out top secret beaches in Norfolk. But ssssh… don’t tell anyone!

Out&About

Scolt Head Island

Holme-next-the-Sea

Situated in a National Nature Reserve between Titchwell and Old Hunstanton this is where Seahenge, a 4000 year old Bronze Age timber circle, was discovered in 1998. It was removed for conservation reasons (see a replica in King’s Lynn Museum) so few people now come to this delightful stretch of sand.

Sea Palling

Don’t stick to the main beach, where the car park and amusements are, but head north towards Eccles-on-Sea for the seclusion. The laying of stone reefs off the shore to protect from coastal erosion has meant this sandy stretch has developed into a unique bay-like beach, with shallow water and few waves, making it perfect for toddlers.

Now, this really IS a desert island! Only accessible at low tide and a lot of mud (unless you have a boat) Scolt Head National Nature Reserve has a beach of pure white sand backed by marram-tufted dunes. Walk to it from Burnham Overy Staithe. More people have seen Brigadoon than this beach!

Burnham Overy Staithe

If you don’t cross the mud for Scolt, stay on the coast path and you’ll come across a huge expanse of unspoilt sand that sits just to the north of Holkham. If you park on the quay be warned – many people have come back from the long walk to find their car submerged by the rising tide!

Great Yarmouth - North

Go a little way north of the amusements and attractions of Great Yarmouth and you’ll discover a huge stretch of marramgrassed beach that’s perfect for finding a little sheltered hollow to have a picnic or sleep. And, if you’re feeling energetic, you’ll know that the action’s just a few minutes’ walk away.

Overstrand

Backed by vertiginous cliffs, few people know there’s a great beach below and yet it’s just a mile away from the hustle and bustle of Cromer. In fact, there’s a cliff-top path from Cromer you can take if you fancy stretching your legs too.

Waxham

Horsey with its seals and Winterton with its fab café attract more visitors, but nearby Waxham, like them backed by grassy dunes, has its fans too including the Daily Telegraph, which voted it one of Britain’s 40 best beaches. There’s a nice café in a converted 16th century barn too.

California

Yes, you can go away on holiday and tell your friends you’ve been to California. Just not the one on the Pacific Coast of the United States. So if you think you might see Baywatch’s Pamela Anderson bounding through the surf to help save a struggling swimmer, think again. That said, it’s got lovely fine sand… perfect for building sand castles.

Wild swimming in Four magical spots to take a dip www.visitsuffolk.com

W

ild swimming in

S

Suffolk is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. It’s a feeling like no other: jumping into a cool river on a baking hot day, your clothes strewn on the grassy bank where later you’ll stretch yourself out to dry in the sun. If that sounds like heaven to you, make sure you plunge into one of these magical wild swimming spots this summer.

Outney Common on the River Waveney

To explain just how lovely wild swimming in the Waveney is, we must explain a little about the recent history of wild swimming. Writer and environmentalist Roger Deakin was a pioneer of British wild swimming; in 1996 he travelled across the country swimming in different lakes, rivers and ponds, and recorded his adventure in the famous book, Waterlog: A Swimmer’s Journey Through Britain. And can you guess what his favourite river was? That’s right... the Waveney. Wild swimming in Suffolk is at its most idyllic at this two-mile loop of the River Waveney around Outney Common, on the northern tip of Bungay. There are many beautiful spots to choose from, and the water is of a good quality. During the summer months you might find Suffolk families here, or groups of friends enjoying a cool dip and feeling free. You don’t have to limit your wild swimming to just an afternoon, either. Perched on the riverside is Outney Common Caravan Park, where you could stay and go for a wild swim every morning, or there are plenty of places to stay in quirky Bungay.

The Little Ouse at Santon Downham

Santon Downham is a tiny village in the middle of Thetford Forest, near Brandon. To the north of it runs the Little Ouse, a pretty river whose course marks the boundary between Suffolk and Norfolk. The Little Ouse offers wild swimming surrounded by a beautiful forest: a much more intimate experience than swimming through open land. You can get in by the footbridge at St Helen’s picnic site in Santon Downham – an area that can get quite busy on hot days and school holidays. Once you swim away from the picnic area however, the

river is extraordinarily tranquil; you can swim upstream and allow the river to carry you back down, or arrange for someone to pick you up and swim the 6km gently downstream to Brandon, spotting kingfishers, swans and plenty of fish on the way.

Little Ouse at Knettishall Heath

From Santon Downham the Little Ouse meanders southeast towards Knettishall Heath. This 430-acre country park in the Brecks is a patchwork of lush riverside meadows, heath and woodland, and is teeming with wildlife, much of which is nationally rare. Where the river runs through the heath, there are pools to swim in, and shallows to paddle or go netting in. On summer days it’s an idyllic place to bring children and dogs to burn off some energy playing in the water, or to dip your feet and read a book.

Dedham & Flatford on The River Stour

The River Stour meanders through the south of Suffolk, creating around it the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the very same area that John

Constable roamed as a young landscape painter. The river offers up not only extreme beauty but also several wild swimming spots, the majority of which are between Dedham and Flatford. A good spot to start swimming in this historic vale is at Fen Bridge near Dedham, a quiet spot with fairly deep water. In Flatford you can float past the iconic Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s Cottage, which featured in Constable’s most famous paintings, such as The Haywain, painted in 1821. And if you get too tired, you can always rent a boat at The Boathouse pub in Flatford, and spend the rest of the afternoon bobbing on top of the water.

A few things to remember about wild swimming in Suffolk

As well as these idyllic wild swimming spots on Suffolk’s rivers, Suffolk also has 50 miles of varied coastline to dive into. Please remember that wild swimming should only be undertaken by strong swimmers, and that any wild swimming you do is always at your own risk. Before you set out make sure you are aware of weather conditions, water levels, exit and entry points, and anything else that might affect your safety. 15

BoxSets

During the current content drought Elizabeth Parker looks at some of the best box sets around that you may have missed.

As the lockdown eases and we

see some sort of normality returning to our lives – ‘the new normal’ as we like to call it, I have found myself reflecting on what occupied my mind during the last few months. I am an avid reader but found that my mind wouldn’t focus. Wandering into the exciting worlds that every new book has to offer but unable to make it past chapter five. Still I desperately needed the escapism that a good story provided. Instead I have found myself in a different form of departure from the reality we found ourselves in... the world of the box set. I watched a lot during the lockdown, not all award winning. But here are my top three. Reese Witherspoon features twice. She certainly is a long way from Leagally Blonde (2001) which scored a respectable 6.3 on IMDB. However these two score much higher Little Fires Everywhere - 7.8 and The Morning Show - 8.4. Well worth a watch what ever the weather.

The Morning Show Apple TV+, 1 season

Criminal Minds

Little Fires Everywhere

If you like, an American detective series with a difference then this is the box set for you. An elite team of criminal profilers can led by Aaron Hotcher head of the FBI Behavioural Analysis Unit. Although based in Quantico, the team will fly all over America to assist the local police forces to solve serial murders using the evidence to profile the killer. The team is like a family, a group of people with very different personalities and always ready to drop everything to fly off to stop another heinous case and their private lives are not exactly smooth. I absolutely love the different characters in the series. The initial team includes Gideon, a top profiler coming back from mental health issues, Dr Spencer Reid a young man with an ability to speed read and remember everything that he has read, Derek Morgan, an enigmatic, good looking man who has a very flirtatious relationship with the very eccentric IT whiz Penelope Garcia. The team sees several changes through the series but the added complications and interactions within the team make this a box set you are going to watch from beginning to end.

I have found myself watching very different genres to what I would normally watch and have really enjoyed watching this very different series. Based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller, the story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood - and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster. Reece Witherspoon is the matriarchal figure in the picture perfect Ricahrdson family during the 1990’s. When the arrival of the enigmatic Mia Warren (Kerry Washington) and her daughter cause immense upheaval in this family’s lives and the cracks within the family deepen to breaking point. Every single member of the Richardson family are affected. With repercussions spreading to friends and work colleagues.

Independent financial advice from the name you can trust

I have to admit that I was drawn to watching this show by the fact that Jennifer Anniston and Reece Witherspoon are two of the main characters. This series is based on a morning breakfast show, which is very different to the style of program that I usually watch. I was engrossed in this series from beginning to end. It has an intricate web of characters. Storylines based around the issue that Steven Carrell’s character is accused and dismissed due to inappropriate behaviour. The ripple effect from the initial dismissal of Mitch Kessler (Carrell) who co-hosted the morning show with Alex Levy (Anniston) to the surprise installation of Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) which was instigated at an awards ceremony by Alex to exasperate the management as they wouldn’t agree to her demands. Herby starts the complexities of the cat and mouse game that is behind the scenes at the morning show. The series is inspired by Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.

BBQ sauce with a difference LUXURY condiment maker Stokes Sauces has announced the launch of a Korean BBQ Sauce and a Bourbon & Cajun BBQ Sauce. With a rich dark fruit flavour, Stokes Sauces’ Korean BBQ Sauce is seasoned to perfection with spices, soya and Mirin wine for an authentic taste. The premium sauce is ideal for drizzling over BBQ meat, as a dipping sauce or to add a Korean twist to a stir fry. Inspired by flavours on the other side of the Pacific, Stokes Sauces’ Bourbon & Cajun BBQ Sauce is sweet yet spicy with a Louisiana style Cajun seasoning that is, once again, a delicious dipping sauce and also makes summertime BBQ meat sizzle with flavour. The moreish sauce is sweetened by sticky black treacle and has a kick from a Kentucky Bourbon that will create a delicious caramelised taste when grilled on BBQ meat. Founder of Stokes Sauces, Rick Sheepshanks, commented: “During these challenging times it has been heartening to see lots of people still enjoying BBQs from their gardens, balconies and even driveways. The new range brings something different to your standard bangers and burger fare – authentic flavours from around the world that add the wow factor people may be missing from not eating out.” The Bourbon & Cajun BBQ Sauce (RRP £3.70) and Korean BBQ Sauce (RRP £3.30) are available to purchase from the Stokes Sauces website stokessauces.co.uk along with many fantastic independent retailers in 300g bottles.

Intwood Farm New butchery keeps local community fed during lockdown www.intwoodfarm.co.uk

L

ocated just outside Norwich, Intwood Farm is a family owned farm with over 350 acres of arable land and 50 acres of grazing land, with additional land being grazed for neighbouring farmers. Farmer Nigel Darling is a passionate livestock enthusiast who began keeping various rare breeds as a hobby. However, he believes the best way to preserve native and rare breed livestock is to find a viable market for them. As a result he has created a state-of- the-art butchery specialising in home reared, native breed beef, pork and lamb, as well a range of artisan sausages, meatballs and burgers. They also offer local chicken and duck and a selection of sauces, as well as oils from Hillfarm in Suffolk . The £400,000 new butchery has been built in a converted dairy shed and includes a farm office, reception, an

operations room, a chilled meat storage room and a large freezer area. Work started in November, but as the Coronavirus pandemic began to gain momentum, the family worked night and day to finish the facility. The butchery started trading in April, since which time the free delivery service has been a life-line for customers during lockdown, with over 600 orders shipped since mid April. Offering premium local meats at affordable prices, the butchery is already enjoying repeat orders and rave

reviews, with many customers claiming it is “the best steak they’ve ever had”. Nigel explains what makes native breed beef so special “With native breeds you don’t pump them full of grain, you feed them on grass and forage crops and let them roam the fields. Not only is this switch to less-intensive cattle farming positive for the environment, when cattle live on a grass-based diet, it imparts more flavour in the meat. In addition, traditional native breed cattle, including Welsh Black, Highland and traditional Hereford are slow growing, meaning they have more intramuscular fat than their modern counterparts, making the meat more succulent. Add to this the fact that our beef is hung for 21 days and it all goes to improve the quality of the meat, which our customers are enjoying.” Intwood Farm meats are available to order online at www.intwoodfarm.co.uk with free delivery throughout the UK. Lockdown has been eased, so maybe it’s time to impress family and friends with a socially distanced barbecue which has a little more pizazz than next door’s regular old burger in a bun...

The summer is here and with it comes barbecue season. Lets not play it safe like last year and reach for the same old meat collection of burgers, sausages and chicken. Here are three top fish recipes which will wow your guests. Cooking fish of any kind can be a daunting prospect, even for the seasoned barbecuers among us. Just remember, fish is much more delicate than a slab of meat, so lets not leave it on the flames until it turns into a piece of charcoal.

Mediterranean Style Salmon Kebabs TIME TO MAKE: 90 mins SERVES: 6

These salmon kebabs are delicious and always a crowd pleaser. The Mediterranean-style marinade, with its beautiful garlic and fresh zesty notes, has a real summery feeling. Pair this with a flavoursome couscous, your favourite salad and a generous helping of Tzatziki.

Ingredients: 1.5kg Salmon illets, cut into cubes approximately 4cm in size 3 bell peppers cut into cubes approximately 4cm in size 2 red onions, cut into squares For the marinade 100 ml extra virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemon, zested and juiced 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves 2 tsp dry oregano 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp mild chili powder 1/2 tsp ground coriander For the garnish Bird’s eye chili Fresh coriander leaf

Method: First off start with the marinade by mixing the extra virgin olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and zest, oregano, thyme, cumin, mild chilli powder and ground coriander. Place the salmon pieces, bell peppers and red onions in a large mixing bowl, season with salt and pepper, and briefly mix together. Pour the marinade over the salmon and vegetables and mix to make sure the salmon is well coated with the marinade. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for an hour to make sure you pack in as much flavour as you can to the fish. Take a skewer and, starting with the salmon, thread on salmon, pepper and onion; repeating until the skewer is full with a space of about 4cm at each end.

If you are using wooden skewers it is always advisable to soak them in water for 20-30 minutes before using. By now you will have already fired up the barbecue... gas or charcoal, its up to you. Place salmon skewers on and drop the lid to maximize the smokey flavours. Cook salmon for 6 to 8 minute, or until the fish is opaque throughout. Make sure you turn once midway through cooking. When cooked serve immediately, but make sure you get in quick as these sumptuous skewers will go quick, so grab one fast or miss out.

Cod parcels TIME TO MAKE: 30 mins SERVES: 4

This fish dish is super easy to make, however it will impress your guests. Most of the work is in the prep which can be done ahead of time, leaving you more time to enjoy a cool summer cocktail in the garden.

Ingredients: 4 cod illets, 150-200g each 500g cooked new potatoes, cut into 1cm slices 50g cherry tomatoes, quartered 20g black olives, quartered

For the herb sauce 100ml olive oil 50ml red wine vinegar Handful of basil, chopped Handful of parsley, chopped

1 red and 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced 2 tsp capers Juice of ½ lemon

Prawn tacos with avocado salad

1 small onion, inely chopped 100ml extra-virgin olive oil

TIME TO MAKE: 45 mins

Method:

Once again this takes your boring old BBQ’s to the next level.

Cut four sheets of foil approx 80cm long. Fold these in half so the foil parcels will have a double layer - we don’t want any rips when we are cooking. Place in the middle of each double foil sheet a layer of the boiled sliced new potatoes, which will create a bed for the cod fillets. Place the cod fillets on top, then scatter with the tomatoes, black olives, capers, onions, lemon juice, olive oil and peppers. Season with salt and pepper. To make the parcels fold the long edges together and then fold in each end, scrunching to seal. Place on the pre-heated BBQ for approx 10 minutes. You may need a few minutes longer if you have used larger fillets of cod. To make the herb sauce finely chop the coriander and parsley, or blitz in a food processor if you prefer a smoother finish, and then mix with the olive oil and vinegar, seasoning with salt and pepper. Add a little water if needed to create a pouring consistency. Take the ‘parcel’ off the heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Serve the parcels sealed and your guests can unwrap their sumptuous surprises, and then spoon on a little of the herb sauce.

Succulent king prawns quickly cooked over the open flames gives them a magical smoky flavour. Top tip: Always cook more prawns than you think you need as they always go fast, and we don’t want anyone to be disappointed.

Ingredients: 1kg raw king prawns 2 tablespoons fajita seasoning 1 garlic clove, inely chopped 100ml extra-virgin olive oil

since

2004

Handful of chopped coriander 1 red birds eye chilli (optional), inely chopped

Feta cheese, crumbled

Juice of 1 lime

For the paprika mayonnaise 200g mayonnaise

1/4 red cabbage, shredded

1 clove garlic, inely chopped

Method:

all

For the salad 1 avocado, stoned, peeled, inely chopped

12 taco shells

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

ity Qualsh Fre h Fyeiasr round

SERVES: 4

1 carrot, peeled, cut into matchsticks 1 small iceberg lettuce, shredded 4 radishes, thinly sliced

In a bowl mix the fajita seasoning, garlic, olive oil and prawns. Make sure that each of the prawns has a good coating of the mixture. Thread the prawns on to wooden skewers, this will make them easy to handle when you are cooking them on the BBQ. To make the salad simply combine all of the ingredients together and then finish by squeezing over the lime juice, and season with salt and pepper if required. Most of the time spent on this dish is in the prep, so get ahead by making the salad in the morning before your guests arrive. The mayonnaise couldn’t be simpler, just combine all of the ingredients together and reserve in the fridge until needed; once again all prepared well in advance. Cook the prawns on the BBQ for 3-4 minuets, remember they will cook very quickly so place them around the edge where the heat is not as fierce. When ready slide the prawns off the skewers in to a bowl and serve in the middle of the table alongside the salad and taco shells (heat the shells according to the packet instructions). It’s fun to let everyone dig in to build their own how they like it, finishing off with a sprinkle of feta cheese.

I

am sitting here trying to write this article and having no idea where or how to start. People keep talking about the “new normal.” I, like a lot of people I’m sure, am struggling to wrap my brain around what that means. Will we just wake up one day and think, “yes, this is normal?” Will we ever go back to the way things were, and at what point will things stabilize so we can carry on? “Turbulent times.” This is my go-to catch phrase right now whenever I strike up a conversation with someone. As Brits we can add that to our rolodex of awkward conversation topics, next to the weather and what beer is on at the local. As bizarre and ever-changing things are, we seem to have adapted. I would argue this has brought many of us closer and fostered a new sense of community. We are learning how to function in this “new normal.” Functioning, for a lot of people, means heading back into the office for work instead of logging in from home. This may be overwhelming, stressful or exciting in the same way lockdown was in the beginning. I spoke to some women about how they managed their work from home experience and what they have learned as they head back to the office.

I never expected it to work as well as it did Jci Poe Jackie never expected her working from home situation to work as well as it did. She learned a lot about how to utilise technology and work remotely. Now, instead of consulting with a passing colleague, she will record or share her screen amongst other new practices. Although Jackie, the Finance Director for Micropress Printers, is headed back to work, many of her coworkers are still furloughed or working from home so she can still use her new skills. As many of her colleagues aren’t returning to the office quite yet, she has had to pick up extra jobs. “You just get your head down because you’ve got to get it done,” Jackie said. The new schedule means she is working extra hours and isn’t switching off as much. Normally, 5pm means switch off time as she has to pick her daughter up, but working from home, she keeps working after that time. However, Jackie has enjoyed the experience, she said. Lockdown has given her the chance to get more hands on with some aspects of her job. She has been able to engage more with some of the publications Micropress works with. “I never expected it to work as well as it did,” Jackie said.

K Wd Kelly, the PA to the Principal at Lynn Grove High School, said she was excited to return to work, even just one day a week. During lockdown, she struggled to switch off at the end of her work day. “When you’re normally at work, you go home and finish.” Kelly said. “But I felt like I was always at work.” During lockdown, Kelly mentally prepared herself for the day by setting an alarm at the normal time, getting up and showering in time to log on. Kelly knew that without that routine, nothing would get done. Balancing full time work with homeschooling a 15-year-old was an experience. However, one of her biggest struggles was the challenges around colaborating with colleagues. Setting up zoom calls was no substitute for bouncing the odd idea off of a trusted co-worker. “Getting carried away with an idea that might not work happened a few times. Someone else’s perspective certainly helps.” Kelly laughed. Kelly is excited to go back to work and to see how the working from home experience will change dynamics. Mostly, she is excited to see her colleagues again. “I think it has brought the team closer in a way because we had a team call every day whereas we wouldn’t have had that before because some of us just see each other in passing.”

Tere Her For Teresa, working from home wasn’t too much of a shock to the system as she has had the facilities to do so for 14 years. The Marketing and Communications Manager for Smith & Pinching can log into a secure system and work from anywhere in the world. In the absence of office buzz, Teresa and the Smith & Pinching staff have had virtual coffee mornings, and are beginning socially distanced car park coffee mornings. Shs also that said the team is like a big family and the directors always put staff first and always check on them regularly. “Our Managing Director emails all staff on behalf of him, our Finance Director and Executive Director every morning and he finishes every email with “we’re in this together,” she said. Teresa is currently working from her dining room table as her husband is occupying the study. They work for the same company and have a

setup including screens and a printer to replicate the office. A core team has stayed at the office opening post, scanning and acting as an extra resource when needed. Prioritising work on her list and working with a marketing assistant helps her to stay focused. Whilst Teams and Zoom calls facilitate and focus project meetings remotely. Teresa’s job never stopped, she just adapted to a different way of working. There are no immediate plans for her to return to the office, the company has asked for input from staff on how to proceed and will adapt as needed. “Having had cancer last year my whole attitude to life changed so lockdown hasn’t really made any difference,” Teresa said. “ You never know how long you have so make every moment count. I class myself lucky to work for such a caring ‘family.’”

working from home more Some people came up with

interesting strategies to stay focused while working from home. These may not work for you, everyone is different, but they may help you if you are really struggling to focus.

1

Dress for a normal day at the office. I’m a fan of this one, myself. No matter what the task is, if I’m not dressed for the occasion, I am less likely to succeed. Whether it is working from home, going to the shops or lounging on the sofa, if I haven’t put conscious thought into my attire, it isn’t going to work for me. My gold standard is putting on a belt — if I am wearing one, I mean business.

2

Exercising while on a break. You are at home, no one is going to notice you smell a bit ripe! Getting the blood pumping can help get the brain juices flowing again if you are losing focus, and you are getting fit in the process. Squeezing in as little as 20 minutes of movement into your day is so good for you on a personal and work level.

3

Re-enact the commute. I’ll admit, I’m not really behind this one. My friend told me some people leave the house, drive around a few minutes then walk back in the door so they feel like they are arriving at work. This seems like a lot of faf to me, and an extra couple of minutes that could be spent staring into space over a cup of coffee. But whatever floats your boat, I guess.

4

Create a designated work space. I am very guilty of not doing this — I am definitely frantically typing this article in bed in the early hours of the morning — but when I do set a space out, it works. We are all guilty of letting work bleed into our personal lives and this is more likely to happen when working from home. It is easier to switch off from work when you can get up and walk away.

5

Stay connected. Face to face contact is starting up again slowly, but if you are still working from home, or shielding, make sure you aren’t isolated. Reach out to colleagues for help with something if you need it, or take a break and catch up with a friend. Taking a few minutes to bounce ideas off of another person can save time wasted on a dud idea, and it can brighten your day with talking to someone else.

To keep us in touch with work colleagues, friends and family the shift to video calls and conferencing has never been so important. With so many different platforms to choose from its difficult to know if you should be Zooming, Teaming or FaceTiming. Which ever you choose here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of staying connected.

Check your internet connection

It might seem obvious but before your call check your broadband is working well. Its just about being connected but if you have a good connection. Use a speed test tool, like Fast.com which will test your internet speed. If you’re not getting enough speed, move closer to your Wi-Fi router as this may help if you have a poor signal.

Close down other apps

Be prepaired for the call by saving any work and closing down any apps or programs you won’t need fore you start. You especially want to close any programs that use too much CPU power. Too many open apps will slow down your computer whilst using the video function, because the call itself requires a lot of resources.

Take precautions before sharing your screen

If you’re going to share your screen during a video call, it’s a good idea to take extra precautions so people can’t see anything private. Go to your browser and close all tabs, especially anything you wouldn’t want anyone else to see. Next, enable Do Not Disturb mode. This ensures that others won’t accidentally see messages from private conversations when you share your screen.

Background & light

It’s best to make a video call in a location with ample natural light. This way, your face will be clear. However, if your room doesn’t have plenty of sunlight, try to sit under some soft florescent lighting (nothing too harsh). It’s best to choose a spot with a neutral background — nothing too busy. If you just sit in front of a wall, that should be fine. If you can’t find a suitable background, you can try to blur your background on Skype. If you’re using Zoom, you can even switch to a virtual background.

Check the camera position

It’s important that you position the camera at a good height. Try to put it right at eye level so you’re not looking up or down. If you have the camera too low you will be constantly looking down, colleagues will have an up-nostril shot and will also make it look like you have six chins. Whilst talking, don’t look at yourself, look straight into the camera. This way, others won’t feel like you’re distracted.

Organize beforehand

If you’re running a meeting, try to have all your talking points and documents ready beforehand. If your colleagues need to see a document, send it before the call and make sure everyone has access to all the necessary data prior to the video meeting. This way, you won’t have to spend the first few minutes of the call waiting for everyone to get up to speed.

Dress appropriately & focus Working from home does not mean you have to let standards slip. Just becuase you own a Wonder Woman onesie doesn’t

mean you should be wearing it. You certainly don’t have to wear something formal, it is best to find a smart casual middle ground and remember to do your hair and make-up. The other temptation is to just dress the top half, but why risk it. Just because it’s sunny outside and you are sat in your conservatory certainly doesn’t mean you can get away with the bikini bottoms you wore last year in Marbs. Make sure you are focused and on top form. Don’t have late nights before your big meeting or presentation. Treat this the same as if you are attending in person.

Mute yourself when you’re not speaking

When you’re in a video meeting with a lot of participants while you’re at home, it’s best to keep yourself muted most of the time. Only unmute yourself when you need to speak.

Distractions... but don’t stress

Let’s be honest here, this is real life. You’re at home, and chances are you have pets and/or children. If you can make sure the little darlings are cared for, distracted or entertained during your video call then everything will go a lot smoother. Disaster strikes. Even though you set up the electronic babysitter and the children were five minutes into ‘Finding Nemo’ you suddenly find your little ones have got bored and just invaded the call. Don’t stress, just politely excuse yourself and usher them back to the other room. Probably best to mute your microphone at this stage so you don’t jeopardise your ‘Mum of the year award’. 39

Finding your

So you’re still

furloughed...

You’re sitting at home watching

To say I am a fitness freak is an understatement — I am an addict. I took lockdown as a chance to double down on my training. A lot of people turned to exercise, wanting to savour every moment allowed outside. Exercise is a healthy thing to turn to but, like anything, can turn toxic in large amounts. It is important to find a healthy balance with every aspect of our lives. We can’t neglect our friends because we are busy training, we can’t neglect our personal health because we are spending too much time socialising. Finding that balance can be so very hard, especially during this strange, pandemic era we are living in. I found I put too much pressure on myself for self improvement, “you have no excuse not to train three hours a day, what else are you doing?” This led to burnout which I didn’t realise was entirely possible when I was isolating alone. I thought it would be best to keep busy and cram every day with activities and tasks. Exercise, baking, language learning, reading, more exercise, cooking. I got carried away. Now we are starting to ease restrictions again, I find that the pendulum is swinging the other way. I miss taking time for myself and enjoying quiet moments. I am realising how important it is to find the tipping point on that scale. It is so important to find time to do the things we want to do. If getting fit and running a 5k is an ultimate goal, great, get up and do it. However, don’t be so hard on yourself if you find yourself getting burnout. Sometimes what we need is to just sit on the sofa and veg with a pint of ice cream, and that’s ok. The most important thing to take care of right now is our mental health. Get that balance right and the rest will follow. Now I am relaxing myself a little more. It’s ok if I take a rest day, I still trained every other day this week. When it comes to baking, I’m sure my pals would rather I kept the oven going 24/7, but they understand we all need balance. As things start opening up again, remember to work hard, play hard — and take a moment to check in with yourself. 40

all of your friends head back to work, you’re going crazy with boredom and maybe loneliness. Same. It is so hard watching everyone else crack on with things and have some sense of normality. I am personally getting a bit bored of random advice from people not in the same boat as me. I’m not the best person to give advice either, but I have figured out a few things to help keep me sane while I sit here and wait. I’ll admit, I tick most of the lockdown stereotypes: I bake a lot, exercise too much, I have watched Tiger King a few times already. My point however is, it doesn’t matter what your hobbies or coping mechanisms are, it is the routine that counts. Each day starts with coffee. This immediately sets me on a more normal track, who doesn’t grab a cup of something hot and wet before they start their day? After breakfast I like to challenge my brain on some level: virtual Scrabble, Sudoku or Duolingo. I like to feel like I am using this time productively. Perhaps you are more of a social type and missing human interaction. Obviously there is a bit of a halt on this right now, but somehow I have made quite a few friends during lockdown. I try to shop locally on the high street and people are so up for talking and getting to know regulars. A few kind words can go a long way, and you may learn something from talking to someone new (shoutout to Matt and Aaron at the deli!). So many people say it, it’s getting old, but why not try cooking for yourself? Start with some simple basics and work up. It is so satisfying to learn a new skill, or try some more technical stuff. Self care is so important at the moment and our health starts with our diet. Above all of this, the most important thing to remember is to not be too hard on yourself. Maybe the routine slips — you eat junk, skip a workout, can’t get off the sofa one day — it’s ok. Just remember it’s not the end of the world, try again tomorrow.

I bake a lot, exercise too much, I have watched Tiger King a few times already. My point however is, it doesn’t matter what your hobbies or coping mechanisms are, it is the routine that counts. Stay connected

Sometimes I find myself swirling in a pool of negativity and feeling very lost. Chances are, someone else is feeling the same! Pick up the phone or go and visit a friend from an appropriate distance. During lockdown, I started up a great little baking exchange with some friends in town. I would always set aside a good chunk of time to catch up with my best friend’s mum who also lives alone. Staying connected is good for you and those around you.

Inspiring

C Mer From Norwich to 26,000 young people across the UK

n May 2020, Independent

Girls’ School of the Year 2019, Norwich High School for Girls launched its first-ever online conference event, a continuation of its pioneering Inspiring Females programme. In just one day, this event reached an amazing 26,000 young people across the UK, and garnered the support from over 45 outstanding guest speakers, ranging from celebrity chef Prue Leith CBE to Chartered Engineer, Yewande Akinola MBE. The Inspiring Females programme was first launched in 2016, with an event hosted at Norwich High with 20 speakers and an audience of 200 young women. Since then, it has gathered significant momentum, reaching 1,000s of young women aged 1018, through events all shaped by amazing volunteer students. Designed to Inspire, Educate and Empower, events from this programme have ranged from days covering STEM, relationships with Mums and Dads, the arts and wellbeing, to 2019’s annual summit held at the impressive Chelsea FC, with 40 amazing speakers inspiring over 750 young women from across the UK. This day was filled with Q&A panels, stimulating keynotes, interactive sessions, careers stands, networking and much more. The initial plan for 2020 was to bring the excitement of Chelsea FC back to Norwich City FC, though like all large scale events, this has sadly been postponed until further notice. Recognised for being a continuously growing and ambitious programme, a commitment was made over the Easter holiday that something had to take place to continue this momentum, to offer something inspiring to young people in these unprecedented times – and this is where the idea for Inspiring Change Makers Online was created. Girls and staff created a bespoke website, inviting previous and exciting new speakers from all walks of life to participate. What was not anticipated was how this event would grow in just one month, reaching more and more speakers and schools, all keen to get involved. Kirsty von Malaisé, Headmistress of Norwich High School for Girls commented: “We wanted to create this event to continue our mission to inspire,

educate and empower young people at this challenging time, when they might need it the most. So many have faced a range of challenges, from students in Years 11 and 13 who had questions about their futures after having examinations cancelled, to those at the beginning of their Senior School years who may have missed out on so many rich opportunities. A real silver lining for us at this time has been the good will and kindness of the speakers who all volunteered their support to deliver such a broad selection of sessions - keep fit, meditation, yoga, keynotes, interactive sessions, careers talks, one-to-one Q&As and live panel sessions, charity and social enterprise awareness and so much more - all shaped into a full programme for young people to engage in.” Speakers supplied pre-recorded sessions and participated in live Q&A sessions for the website, with keynote talks delivered by top figures in their fields, such as Yewande Akinola MBE, Tram Anh Nguyen,

Co-founder of the CFTE and Tessy Ojo, Chief Executive of the Diana Award. Other big names involved included Sunday Times Luxury Content Director Lorraine Candy, Olympic Hockey Champion Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, and of course Prue Leith CBE, who launched the event with a breakfast pancake recipe. The event also had a contingent of Norfolk Change Makers, from Genevieve Raghu, founder of arts charity Into Opera, who delivered a session entitled “If there was ever a time for creativity… it’s now!”, to lawyers Naomi Newell and Rebecca Bond from Birketts LLP. The website was launched on Thursday 21st May, reaching 26,000 young people immediately, of which 95% saying that they felt truly empowered to become a Change Maker after participating. Individual takeaways from the young people who took part included “We all have the power to make a difference”, “Accept who you are and be the best version of yourself”, “Failure is feedback”, “Shyness is a superpower”, and “Always try and improve the lives of others.” Most of the programme content is still available to be viewed for free at www.inspiringfemales.org.uk and you can follow the programme on twitter @inspfemales. From home schooling to small group bubbles, blended learning and beyond. What does the future of schooling for our children look like? Elizabeth Parker looks at how we can help our children make progress and achieve their potential.

O

ne thing you can be sure of

is that everyone involved in the education of our young people wants the best. All of our educators have used the government guidelines to ensure the safety of our children whilst helping them to be educated in unprecedented times. From the moment that Boris Johnson or Gavin Williamson stood at the podium, teachers, head teachers and all educators would be informed and work to ensure everything was put in place. As one of those educators I always felt completely safe at school, a credit to the team I work with. If you have any fears I have often described schools as feeling safer than visiting the supermarket. ‘Current guidelines’ is a phrase that is used a lot with an understanding that the guidelines do change regularly, as they should, in response to scientific research and evidence. The almost daily discussion of ‘if and when’ a vaccine will be ready, herd immunity and the current number of cases linked to local lockdowns make us all feel a little on edge. So put yourself in the mind of a young person who has spent several months in a lockdown situation and not socialising with their friends apart from on screens. How do we move forward ensuring that they are ready to go back to school in September? Your child’s school will have been in touch with you as parents to explain what is happening in September. Expect variation between schools as they interpret the guidelines and then put into place a robust plan which is reflective of the provision of your school. Primary schools are having staggered start times, specific play areas and class bubbles. Secondary schools are more complex and seem to show more variation. One school I know has year group bubbles in a specific area of the school with the teachers moving from class to class. Whilst another has implemented a strict one way system. Staggered start and end times, staggered lunches and lots of hand cleaning. But what about the education of our children? Will these children be the lost children of the pandemic? Certainly not if the teachers have anything to do with it. Education is not a one way street. It should not be something that is done to

a child. It is not a passive process and now more than ever it should involve the school, parents and children working together. Easier said than done I hear you say and I am there with you. As the mother of a child who told me that the word Wednesday had too many letters in it and then a week later he went to school and wrote six lines independently for the teacher he adores. Getting a child to be proactive and completely on board is not an easy process. With younger children I believe the key is in what they are interested. Henry doesn’t want to write and learn the days of the week whilst he was more than happy to be writing a descriptive piece about a monster he had invented. Children need to develop resilience and a passion to want to do well. I have found this fantastic book that is written in a lovely readable format that just flows. It describes being kid average or kid awesome. ‘You Are Awesome: Find Your Confidence and Dare to be Brilliant at (Almost) Anything’ by Matthew Syed. In this book Syed says, “Children will enter a world where things are changing faster than ever before. This book is about helping them to find their inner passion, curiosity, and confidence to reach their potential – and to thrive. I have always believed that mindset matters more than anything else when it comes to happiness and success.”

What is my advice to parents? Think about how different life is going to be in September. As parents we are going to be juggling the demands of work and parent hood in an ever changing environment so think about how our young people will feel. We are going to have to wean them off the electronics that have been their social life, entertainment and providing the feel good endorphins of success and then to put them in an environment that will feel alien to them especially if they have not been to school since the start of lockdown.

What can you do ?

Take time to discu ss the new routine s with them and th e reasons behind why they need to be mo re independent learners. Help them to orga nise themselves, their belongings and their time. Plan their week an d include time for the electronics th at have been their life. Ensure that you als o have knowledge and access to all of their electronic learning platform s. Make your own note of their passw ords. If you can, sit with them while they do their homework. Encourage them to talk to their teachers. Be interested in wh

at they are learning . 45

The New Skills Academy website has an extensive selection of sectors to choose from including admin, health, languages and vocational to name just a few. The type of qualification is also varied from certificates to diplomas. Normal prices range from £100 - £250. www.newskillsacademy.co.uk 46

There are many different finance packages available to help fund this. They are a lot cheaper than going to university and also offer the flexibility of distance learning. www.open.ac.uk

Norfolk County Council

I was impressed with the information and support that can be found on the home page of Norfolk County Council Adult Education seation, with advice on how to be involved in the online tutorials. There was also information for learners including finding and starting a course, learner loans and financial advice. Another section explores making decisions about learning, work and careers. I have found all of this guidance really informative which helps to ensure that you can find the right course for you. Norfolk County Council not only has courses to support job and career development, but also courses aimed at all aspects of our lives. www.norfolk.gov.uk/education-andlearning/adult-learning/courses

Suffolk County Council Suffolk County Council have a partnership with the Education and Skills Funding Agency, to provide a range of adult learning opportunities, including English and Maths. his amazing glampsite near Norwich are “good to go” in line with the campaign for tourism businesses from the Government and Visit England/Visit Britain. Owners Kate and Seb Symonds run two yurts on an 18-acre nature reserve and have opened a roundhouse they’ve built by hand using traditional methods, where visitors can relax in their own luxurious space, explore the adjoining woodlands and go off-grid for a few days of R&R. The business is displaying the “We’re Good To Go” standard mark on their website and communications to demonstrate that they have completed a risk assessment and are adhering to the respective Government and public health guidance. Kate said: “We’ve taken steps in response to the risks of Covid-19 and are the perfect site for social distancing in comfort in the great outdoors. “Our yurts have a private toilet and, new for this year, a private campfire pit, shower room and fridge. We ask for a 25 per cent deposit to confirm a booking with the final balance due just two weeks before arrival and all bookings in 2020 can be moved at no charge if the government renews restrictions.” www.roundthewoods.co.uk

Beauty expert Laura from lkcosmeticsclinic.co.uk shares her top tips to beat the lockdown brows.

ITH MOST OF US in

desperate need of some serious brow love after months of hibernation, I would love to share with you my tips on keeping those lockdown brows in shape until you can visit your brow specialist again. You will need a brow pencil, a brow spoolie or clean mascara wand and a brow fix product. Tweezers are optional if you are confident. Firstly using your wand and brow fix product, brush your brow hairs up to reveal, and assess, any gaps. The fix liquid will ensure that your hairs stay in position all day long. Once you’ve identified any gaps, use your brow pencil to carefully draw in hair like strokes and fill in the gaps in the brow. When styling brows I like to keep the pencil colour as close as I can get to the natural hairs to give the most realistic, yet fuller, finish. I also steer clear of being too heavy handed around the fronts of the brow as this can look a little severe and blocky. Instead concentrate on adding a few hairstrokes in the front of the brow to help fill out. I would always recommend having your eyebrows shaped by a professional, however if you find you have a few strays that don’t sit in the body of the brow itself, you can carefully remove these with tweezers. A good stretch whilst doing this will ensure it’s not too painful! In my clinic, LK Cosmetics, I am a stockist of the professional Brow range Eyebrow Queen. It is cruelty free and vegan friendly, and is a staple product in most makeup artist kits. Created by the original founder of HD Brows, Nilam Holmes. Nilam is one of the most recognised and trusted names in the Beauty Industry and her expertise and professionalism are

valued by clients from all over the world including many celebrities, including Rochelle Humes, Alesha Dixon and Eva Longoria to name but a few. The collection includes the must have Brow Fix; just a drop of this waterproof serum ensures that those brows and brow makeup will stay in place all day long. Try using a Brow Colour Fix which is a tinted fibrous gel and gives colour to lacklustre brows and builds up texture from the fibres. Whilst good quality brow pencils have a tapered end to draw in realistic hairstrokes and a spoolie on the other end to brush brows into place. Using these products at home will give you the next best thing to a professional salon finish. Making sure you look your best until you can secure your next appointment. The UK brow market alone is worth a staggering £20 million. Along with brow makeup products, there are popular services such as microblading, semi permanent makeup, tinting, threading, waxing and the ever popular

HD Brows treatments. Along with the new on trend Brow Lamination Service, which sees eyebrows brushed up and set into a gorgeous full fluffy brow, think Cara Delavigne but softer. So whether you have overplucked eyebrows from the 90’s or brows that grow out of control, there is a solution for us all. At my clinic I offer many different brow services to suit every need; HD Brows, brow lamination, microblading and semi permanent makeup for brows. After working as a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics, I found my passion for brows and have specialised in this area for the last 10 years. My boutique salon LK Cosmetics is located on Bridewell Alley in the historic Norwich Lanes. Consultations are available at the clinic to discuss the overall look you would like to achieve and discover a suitable bespoke brow service to suit you. So go on, give me a call and we can beat those lockdown brows together.

House Home

We all want to have a bit of Chelsea Garden Show magic injected into our gardens and here are five easy ways to do it: Keep things simple.

Create a powerful look by restricting the number of materials and having a focus. For example the same type of stone but in different forms.

Repetition.

Use repeated patterns and plants in your design to make your space feel familiar and balanced.

Levels.

The use of different levels adds an extra dimension and helps to make smaller spaces feel bigger.

Water.

The use of water features can be tricky but the perfect water feature is good for our well being as well as wildlife.

Boundaries.

Turn your boundaries into a wall of design and luscious colour and wildlife, adding depth to your own green space.

lockdown for a long time now and this has made many of us focus on our homes more than ever. With restrictions still in place we find ourselves enjoying these interior spaces with our loved ones and will undoubtedly continue to do so for quite some time to come. Although the Great British weather is unpredictable we have been blessed recently with some fabulous Mediterranean worthy days. As an interior designer I also like to hone my skills to create beautiful outdoor living spaces from the smallest of balconies, courtyards or terraces to the larger gardens and patio areas where we can enjoy the sunny days. As the climate is changing so rapidly within the UK we find ourselves al fresco dining almost all year round just like our European friends, certainly extending into those balmy Autumn evenings. If we find the chill in the air a little too bracing we can always add a little heat with a stylish chimenea or fire pit. By bringing the indoors outdoors we can create some beautiful exterior spaces that can even outshine our living room at

Patio areas that flow from inside to out with flooring that merges seamlessly through bi-fold doors really does add an extension to your living space. Courtyards and terraces can be designed to appear more spacious than the area

depicts with a clever use of colours; light Mediterranean style colour washed walls will give you the Amalfi feel whilst creating the illusion of a larger space. Couple this with beautiful pot plants and with a wide variety of seating on offer these days it is a far cry from the white plastic furniture we all used to have. Protection from the elements can be easily achieved with a covered section, whether they are pitched, flat or even retractable. Tiling or thatching can enhance your exterior design complementing other features you may have. If you love to entertain in your outdoor spaces then you can always add in features like an amazing BBQ area, or a pizza oven; always a hit with guests. With all of these fantastic features and versatility why would you ever want to eat inside again! Personally I like hanging chairs or a swing chair that will take you back to your childhood. All of this makes for a great place to share the spaces outside with loved ones and make memories. Time to pour the Pimms and sit back and relax in the sun. If you want to go the whole hog maybe get in the hot tub! Why not call JHD Interiors for a free no obligation quote. We have one of the most comprehensive selection of outdoor fabrics on offer and we can certainly explore how we can enhance your outdoor space to make it the tranquil garden of your dreams.

are broken – 15% of species in the UK are threatened with extinction. Biodiversity needs space to flourish. Your garden can and will make a difference! Rewilding is a choice of land management. It relies on people deciding to explore an alternative future for the land and adopt a progressive approach to conservation, allowing nature to establish natural processes, repair damaged ecosystems and restore degraded landscapes. Through rewilding, wildlife’s natural rhythms create more biodiverse habitats. It seeks to reinstate natural processes and, where appropriate, missing species; allowing them to shape the landscape and the habitats within. Rewilding needs sufficient scale so that nature can reinstate natural processes and create ecologically viable units. Landshaped believe that alongside larger areas, private gardens can play a significant role in the rewilding process. There are over 10 million acres of gardens in the UK – the equivalent area of all nature reserves in the country combined. No garden is too small to make a difference in a collected effort. Landshaped combine expert knowledge of British wildlife with over 20 years

of experience creating, restoring and looking after wildlife habitats. We help create and restore wetlands, woodlands and hedgerows, sow meadows and create specialist habitats. For many of us living in the UK, our immediate outdoor surroundings are fences, lawns and walls. This can seem uninspiring, but we have a very positive approach to creating habitat. It is astonishing how soon a dragonfly or great crested newt finds a new pond, or a family of tits utilises a hedge. A more sensitive and

It seeks to reinstate natural processes and, where appropriate, missing species – allowing them to shape the landscape and the habitats within. considered approach to landscaping can provide additional value both economically and ecologically. When considering garden boundaries, remember that hedges are much more wildlife friendly than fences, especially the type with rigid gravel boards that prevent creatures moving from one garden to another. Whilst a fence provides some security they are generally ugly, expensive and involve some maintenance. A pretty and near impenetrable hedge can be created with a mix of native species such as gelder rose, rosa canina and hawthorn cretageus monogyna. The flowers of the

roses last through spring and the hips provide autumnal interest. Landshaped can re-establish your garden boundaries to create wildlife corridors and help provide food, shelter and habitat to help preserve our endangered species. Other species can be incorporated including evergreens, climbers and fruit trees. The hedge can be a larder for both you and wildlife. A good mixed hedge can provide better entertainment and value when compared to a fence or bird table. Guests include butterflies, hedgehogs, bees, ladybirds and moths, with many using the hedge as a base to prey on garden pests. Take a permanent break from mowing your lawn… attract a greater variety of pollinating insects with the addition of a wildflower meadow. One cut after flowering and the textured green sward holds till a vibrant colour show starts in early spring with wave after wave of flower attracting an array of pollinating insects. The benefits are for the long term and rewilding is an opportunity to leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Sowing

d cces the

T

IME SPENT with nature and nurturing plants is a way of producing the feel good factor for lots of people. These challenging times have meant that many new people have been enticed into the world of growing and looking after plants. Welcome to everyone. Starting out can be, quite daunting, but never fear, just give growing some plants from seed a try. For a few pounds you can grow quite a wide variety of plants, to brighten up your gardening spaces for next year. Follow a few simple guidelines to help you succeed. I can almost guarantee you will never get tired of watching those tiny seeds develop into plants of all shapes and sizes. With summer progressing nicely it will be time soon to think about sowing some seeds ready for earlier spring and summer colour next year. Sowing direct into the soil or with the protection of a greenhouse using pots and containers and harnessing the end of the summer heat to fuel your plant projects, is perfect. Seeds usually require a minimum of 18°C to germinate, so now is an ideal time. Annual seeds produce their foliage and flowers in one year. On seed packets look for the description Hardy Annuals (HA) as they can cope with some cool winter temperatures, but may require frost protection if the weather is really cold below freezing. Use a cold frame, cloches, a greenhouse or horticultural fleece to provide this help. Plants germinated usually in September 2020 can put on sufficient growth to remain robust before becoming dormant with the seasonal temperature drop. In early spring next year they will leap into life with increasing warmth and daylight to provide floral displays before you know it. In the spring you can gradually acclimatise your plants by a hardening off process before positioning in your garden, when the likelihood of frosts has passed. Sweet peas (lathyrus odoratus), Ladybird Poppy (Papaver commutatum) and Bishops

Did you know? weed (Ammi majus) can be sown from seed in September to develop before winter arrives. Other common favourites include Calendula (common Marigold), Californian poppy (Eschscholzia) and Lupins. In the absence of seed compost, use old compost from other pots and containers, even a little garden soil is equally good to propagate the seeds. Keep warm and moist without over-watering. Every seed packet also carries individual planting instructions, so take a quick look at these before sowing your seeds. Use clean pots to avoid any fungal problems and watch out for plant emergence. Leggy, stretched seedlings will make poor plants. Prick out into single pots when a good portion of the foliage is visible above the soil-minimum 2-3 cm. Handle at the foliage end to avoid root damage, and excavate the root-balls carefully when transferring them to bigger pots. Ideally store the plants in a greenhouse over winter, keeping the soil just moist. Beware of excessive heat on sunshine filled spring days, and of ocurse over-watering. So what are you waiting for? Keep safe and keep gardening.

The Bawdeswell Garden Centre

Norwich Road, Bawdeswell, Dereham, Norfolk NR20 4RZ Tel: 01362 688387 www.bawdeswellgardencentre.com

Even if a seed is planted upside down, the seedling always grows right-way up... plants can sense gravity. Inside the soil, the roots of the seedling grow towards gravity, while the stem grows away from it. The largest seeds are those of the double coconut or coco-demer of the Seychelles, which can sometimes weigh up to 20 kg. Neither Brazil nuts nor coconuts are true nuts. Coconuts are the stones of drupes, while Brazil nuts are just large seeds. The oldest seed grown into a viable plant was Silene stenophylla (narrowleafed campion), an Arctic lower native to Siberia. Radiocarbon dating has conirmed the seed as being over 31,000 years old. Nuts are a concentrated, nutritious food — about 50% fat and 10-20% protein. Peanuts contain more food energy than sugar and more protein, minerals and vitamins than liver. 30,000 orchid seeds weigh barely 1 gm. 69

ABLE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: What is the difference between a Personal Budget and a Personal Health Budget? Answer: A Personal Budget is provided

by your local council if you are eligible for help with social care support. You can request an assessment from the council to establish your needs. The assessment will decide: • The kind of care and support you need. • The cost of this care. • How much you may have to contribute to the cost of the care. A Personal Health Budget is an amount of money to support your health and wellbeing needs which is planned

and agreed between you (or your representative) and your local NHS team. A Personal Health Budget will allow you to manage your healthcare and support with reference to treatments, equipment and personal care in a way which suits you. You receive funding to do so directly. For further details speak to your local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Question: As I am unable to get to a hairdresser, I use a mobile hairdressing service. In the present Covid-19 time what safety protection should be used by my hairdresser if she comes to my home? Answer: Advice is that your

hairdresser should have Personal Protective Equipment such as a facial shield, disposable gloves and protective shoe covers. As the customer you should wear a mask and use a room that has plenty of ventilation. Your hairdresser should only use scissors, brushes, etc. which have been sterilised and not used for other customers earlier. If after having your hair done you come down with Coronavirus within the next 14 days, you should inform your hairdresser. Question: I have a disability but would like to have a holiday in late Summer/ early Autumn. I have been told that it is possible to rent holiday caravans that are disabled friendly; for example having a wheelchair accessible shower. Where can I ind

out about such caravans and their locations? Answer: There are holiday caravans

that have been adapted for disabled guests and one place you could find out more and where they are situated is by visiting www.disabledholidays.com. If you would like to speak to staff to discuss your requirements, there is a phone number on their website. Question: During lockdown I have been clearing out and have lots of good quality items of clothes and bric a brac to donate to charity. However, although I live in a small town, I am in my late 70’s and do not drive. Is there a charity which will collect my items? Answer: The British Heart

Foundation have the following on the introduction to their website: Free collection of clothes, books and more. Don’t throw away your unwanted items. If you can’t make it down to one of our charity shops to donate your things, we can collect them from your home for free. Give your local branch a call and arrange for collection.

The Sad Story of

Over 5 Million COVID-19 Scam Victims Carl Lamb

M

It’s estimated that over 5 million people have fallen victim to financial scams since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. Carl Lamb highlights some of the danger signs to look out for.

any of us

are experiencing pressure on our finances as a result of the Coronavirus crisis, with turbulent markets and forecasts of difficult economic conditions ahead. It’s that nervousness that scammers are targeting with a range of special deals and not to be missed opportunities that are supposedly going to take all our worries away. It’s as true today as it ever was that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Please remember this. If you’re being offered high returns and low risk on an investment, please be sceptical and walk away. Never take advice from a financial adviser unless you know that they are from a firm that is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) – and ideally from a firm that is known to you or has been recommended to you by a real person. You can look up firms of advisers on the FCA register (www.register.fca.org.uk). Firms of Chartered Financial Planners are registered firms that have attained the highest standards of expertise and experience in the financial advice profession. A Chartered firm will have a high proportion of individually chartered advisers and will have signed up to a stringent code of ethics. Always check out anyone who approaches you out of the blue even if they are claiming to be from an organisation you know. You might be approached via a cold call, unsolicited texts and emails or even someone knocking at your door. These fraudsters look and sound like the real thing – pleasant, friendly and professional. They’re good at making it sound like they are doing you a favour by offering you their service but what they really want is to walk away with your money. Cold calling is actually banned within the financial advice profession so if you get an unsolicited call, then it’s not going to be from a genuine firm. Scammers are paying particular attention to those of us with pension

They’re good at making it sound like they are doing you a favour by offering you their service but what they really want is to walk away with your money. savings. You may be offered a free pension review and be told that your pension could be worth much more if you move it into a fund of their choosing. Don’t fall for this spin. Yes, it’s good to review your pension investments and strategy regularly but signing over your money to an unknown party is not the way to go about it. There are fraudsters out there too who will tell you that you can access your

pension savings early to help with your family finances if things are a bit tight at the moment. It’s another lie: you mustn’t access your pension savings until you have reached the minimum retirement age, which is currently age 55. If you do so, you will incur a hefty tax penalty – as well as losing your money entirely if you are persuaded to move it into a fake fund. One of the sure signs that a scam is under way is the application of pressure on you to act quickly. The fake adviser may tell you that the offer is only available for a limited time or that you need to move your money quickly to take advantage of rising markets, for example. Never move more quickly than is comfortable for you and if you feel pressurised, walk away. A good adviser will understand that you need time to consider his or her advice.. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and are not advice. Any solution described may not be suitable for everyone.
