is starting to creep in and we can slowly watch the leaves change to a beautiful golden canopy. To be honest, this is my favourite time of year. The baking hot days of summer are behind us, but the weather is still warm enough to enjoy an evening cocktail in the garden. The school holidays are now over and normal service is resumed. This is a fabulous time of year which previously had a very busy calendar of local events. This year is different and more important than ever. The knock on effect of the Covid pandemic has seen events moved, cancelled and disrupted. Things have been slowly returning to some sense of normality; if we dare call anything normal anymore. With rescheduling and clever planning we are moving forward and learning how to adapt and live in a Covid world. Events such as the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival and the East Anglian Game & Country Fair will prove to be just the ticket for everyone to enjoy our wonderful region again. Seize the moment to get out there and attend or take part. Autumn can feel a little bit like an ending. The end of summer. The end of holidays. But I say no... this is just the beginning. The beginning of a bountiful season packed with great local produce we can all enjoy from the award wining local shops and producers. No need to stray too far in the search for excellence... we have it all right here on our doorstep.

The Morning Show Amazon Prime
Apple TV+ 17 September Season two lands this month of what is sure to be the hot ticket to watch. The stella cast including Jennifer Aniston (Alex) and Reese Witherspoon (Bradley) return and don't disappoint. It seems that after the dramatic final of season one Alex and Bradley are no longer morning television's dream team. With Alex's breakdown/breakthrough on live TV would the producers dare to replace one of the presenters? Aniston received an Emmy nomination for her role and we expect more nominations to follow in what is sure to be a powerful bingeworthy watch.

Another big hitter starts on Apple TV+ this month with a strong cast including Jared Harris, Laura Birn, Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey. This big budget 10 episode extravaganza revolves around the three main female characters, whose performances don't disappoint. Based on Isaac Asimov's book series chronicling the thousand year saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it.
Sex Education Netflix 17 September The much-loved show returns for its third season, continuing the misadventures of the socially awkward high school student Otis and street-smart bad girl Maeve's will-they-won't-they relationship? The excellent cast returns with the usual strong performances from Asa Butterfield (Otis), Emma Mackey (Maeve) and Tanya Reynolds (Lily). Gillian Anderson, who plays Otis' mother Jean, often steals the show portraying the confident sex therapist who is grappling with her own demons. The end of season two sees a cliff-hanger ending of missed chances and the devious actions from an unexpected love rival. Channel 4
Back for a fourth season, Billy Bob Thornton returns as the disgraced lawyer who embarks on obtaining justice through the usual storm of death threats, harassment and trumped up arrests. If you are new to the show then you are in for a treat with a strong cast including William Hurt and Dennis Quaid in earlier seasons. Some what under the radar of many binge watchers this unsung hero is more than just a legal drama.

The Great British Bake Off Channel 4 21 September Yes... it's that time of year again. The world's favourite baking show is back. What is now a cult institution sees another group of excitable contestants grace the famous tent. Let's hope we see lots of handshakes and not too many soggy bottoms. 07

Two Rivers Book Festival
After three sell-out shows in North Norfolk, local actor/writer Mark Kitto is taking his solo play Chinese Boxing on tour. A lecture about the 1900 Chinese Boxer Rebellion to a branch of the Royal Asiatic Society morphs into a piece of theatre that takes the audience to Peking and back, with hard-hitting resonance for modern relations between China and the West. The tour starts on 1 October at Southwold Arts Centre, then on to Holkham Hall, Maddermarket and Fisher Theatre Bungay, check out the individual websites for times and dates.

4-11 September September’s Two Rivers Book Festival features topics as diverse as hauntings and crime fiction, and as important as the climate crisis and the legacy of war. The third annual festival from Waveney and Blyth Arts appears in venues from Diss to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, with a full day of events in Halesworth.

Norfolk Open Studios

25 September-10 October This autumn will see the return of the 16 day event celebrating the counties artists and their achievements by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work. 2020 saw the event cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and instead ran as an online event. Having established itself as one of the largest and most successful open studios schemes in the country Norfolk Open Studios looks to build on its success with its new autumnal dates, where more than 320 artists will be taking part across 267 venues to share and sell their work. Artists will be at work in their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools sharing how they work. The free event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2019 more than 31,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk to meet our county’s artists.
Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “We are so happy that Norfolk Open Studios is returning, a widely loved scheme that artists and visitors look forward to each year. 2021 will see it run at its new time in early autumn, allowing visitors to capture that special time of year as well as helping Norfolk Open Studios to develop a clear and bold identity as an autumn event. We can’t wait to be back in the studios, smelling the paint and kilns, getting to ask those questions we’ve always wanted to know from the artists themselves and maybe even having a go at creating something ourselves. And the chance to buy art direct from the artist is very special.” Artists at all stages of their careers take part, from school and college students through to emerging artists and established and professional artists and makers.

Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, furniture makers, jewellery makers and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk. Alongside opening their studios, many artists will be offering events, demonstrations and workshops to share their skills and practice. This year the scheme will welcome 23 schools to the event as well as 13 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day.

Autumn Take a short break in Norwich this autumn to re-charge, relax and experience a staycation which won’t break the bank

A CHANGE
is as good as a rest, so what better than a short stay not far from home packed full of wonderful things to see, do and eat Walk to soon-to-be favourite eateries, enjoy charming museums, shows and exhibitions, and soak up the atmosphere of a lively welcoming city centre.
Urban delights 18a at The Grosvenor This two-bedroomed stylish apartment is such a find – in a great location in the heart of the Norwich Lanes. Owned by the renowned and wonderfully hospitable Grosvenor Fish Bar, staying here means you have every reason to eat fish and chips without feeling guilty! You can always walk it off as you explore Norwich. Prices per night from around £130. The Assembly House Again another stylish and centrally located place to rest your head – and in true luxury. Autumn offers mean you can stay for selected nights where the price includes parking, breakfast, a legendry afternoon tea and a bottle of fizz, all for two people. Choose from 1 night £199, 2 nights £350 and 3 nights £500. Offer ends 17 November. The Maids Head Hotel Having finished a multi-million-pound renovation in 2020 the hotel has a range of beautiful rooms from standard to suite 14
The Grosvenor
– some with cathedral views. Offers here include a 1-night stay in a classic double room with a credit of £40 per person in their 2AA restaurant for dinner, breakfast and parking all for £195 per night (Sunday to Friday). Guests also get a short trip around Norwich in their vintage Bentley as an added benefit for free! Gothic House Situated on the edge of the Cathedral Quarter, Gothic House is another wonderful and beautifully presented place to stay. With only 2 bedrooms and parking included in the price, this is a welcoming bed and breakfast close to everything. Prices £105 per room, per night. Barnham Broom- stay and play Slightly further afield Barnham Broom has two championship golf courses in an idyllic countryside setting – play from £39 per person. There are also golf packages from £23 per person which include 18 holes and dining. And of course, there are golf stays too from only £99 which includes a 1-night stay, breakfast, dinner, 18-holes on one of their two contrasting
courses, as well as complimentary use of The Edge Health & Fitness Club including swimming pool, integrated relaxation pool, sauna, steam room and gym.
Mix your break with slow countryside pursuits and city fun from morning to night. In my opinion autumn is the best season. The air is fresh, and the trees are turning. The sun retains its heat but its manageable, and if we are lucky enough to get an Indian summer then picnics and outdoor pursuits are still extremely pleasurable. With Norwich being a city situated within the Broads National Park, beautiful countryside and open water is never far away. From Norwich city centre enjoy the autumn months walking or cycling for free in and around The Marriot’s Way, Mousehold Heath, Whitlingham Country

Park and the Sculpture Park and grounds at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Or head over to Wroxham and get out onto the water by hiring a day boat with Broads Tours. Standard day boats cost from £19 per hour and run until the end of October. There are also day cruisers (£210 a day, up to 8 people), Large Electric Day Boats (£168, 11 people) and Wheelchair Friendly Day Boat Hire (£85, 3 hours, 5 people including a wheelchair). Guided walking tours are huge fun, and you always learn something. There are loads to choose from with Paul Dickson Tours, in Norwich and the Broads. And tours can be privately booked too. Or enjoy one of our most beautiful heritage parks – Eaton Park. Perhaps join the Saturday Park Run, play a round of 18-hole crazy golf or simply walk, stopping for a coffee at the café. Up for a challenge? Then take a look at escape room escapades which are a great idea for multi-generational family get-togethers – it brings out your competitiveness, be warned! Both Cryptic Escape and History Mystery offer fantastic games, with City Escape Games taking their adventure outdoors across Norwich. Norwich is hugely cultural, and autumn sees some fantastic exhibition ‘firsts’, theatre, Heritage Open Days (1019 September) and the return of Hostry Festival (October-November). Autumn exhibitions in Norwich include Japanese-Swiss artist, Leiko Ikemura: Usagi in Wonderland (until 12 September, not open Monday’s) at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Presenting a selection of 50 paintings, sculptures, drawings and photography in her first UK exhibition, Ikemura has selected 50 works that span three decades of her career. Tickets cost £8. From 19 September (until 30 January, tickets £12) the Centre also welcomes Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years. Grayson Perry’s groundbreaking ‘lost’ pots will be reunited for the first time to focus on the formative years of one of Britain’s most recognisable artists. This is the first exhibition to survey Perry’s earliest forays into the art world, introducing the explosive and creative works he made between 1982 and 1994.
September is your last chance to see two exhibitions at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. A Passion for Landscape: Rediscovering John Crome (closes 5 September) and Somewhere Unexpected Norwich Castle Open Art Show (closes 12 September). Both are included in general admission tickets. Love a catchy musical? Then book tickets at Norwich Theatre Royal for Six The Musical between 20-25 September. I saw this a few years ago – a relatively new musical then, it blew my socks off! I thoroughly recommend it. This is followed by Bedknobs and Broomsticks (28 September-3 October) plus loads more performances of music, ballet and comedy including a full programme at The Playhouse.
Fabulous food Eating out is something to savour and linger over whether you want lunch or dinner. And when I’m away (and even if I’m not) I love to dress up and feel great. Norwich has a great choice of ‘dress up’ places to eat and both The Ivy for colourful, elegant French surrounds and Benedicts for its stylish paired back Scandi décor hit the spot. I’m also delighted that both welcome family groups proving that it’s possible to enjoy fine dining with your offspring or grandchildren. Leisurely, decadent afternoon teas are getting more and more popular. So, take a look at The Assembly House (£23.95), Trees out of Head - Leiko Ikemura © Leiko Ikemura and VG Bild-Kunst 2021
Gothic House
The Maids Head Hotel (£21) and The Ivy (£24.95). Afternoon tea isn’t quite what it used to be so expect creative savouries as well as traditional sandwiches and plenty of wonderful cakes with a large selection of tea. Remember if the cake gets too much you can take it home. If you don’t have much time you don’t need to miss out. Norwich Market offers an incredible choice for lunch with food from around the world. I love picking up something delicious and then heading to Sir Toby’s for a beer. Find Sir Toby’s facing onto Guildhall Hill. It’s got to be Norwich’s smallest bar!
Local drink experiences If you are looking for something a bit different on Thursdays and Saturdays start as you mean to go on by booking into the Gin Academy at Gyre & Gimble. For £85 you get a two-and-a-half-hour experience where you make your own recipe gin (70cl bottle to take home), drink gin cocktails, learn about the history of gin and store the details of your unique blend in case you want to come back and make more. At The English Whisky Company just outside Attleborough you can enjoy tastings and tours. Celebrating a birthday, they have a new 15 Year Anniversary Tour for one and a half hours. Taking place once a month, tickets are £30. However, if you want to go a step further book yourself onto a Whisky Blending Masterclass (2 hours; £100) where you will blend your own single malt English whisky. Once you have created your perfect blend, you will then hand bottle it, write your own label and take it home with you. There are tastings and a tour included too. Finally, we also make great beer in Norfolk. Lacons offers a click and collect service for their beers and aged ales at both Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. STAY THE NIGHT
Bunga
A scenic market town with excellent shopping, fine wine, literary links and famous folklore
Nestled
within a wide meander of the river Waveney, Bungay is on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk and offers the best of both counties. With a history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, Bungay boasts several ancient attractions, including the ruins of Bigod’s Castle and the ancient Buttercross – where a market is still held each Thursday. Folklore linked to the area includes the legend of Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the heaths and coastline of East Anglia and supposedly terrorised the occupants of Bungay’s St Mary’s church in 1577.
What to see and do
Once you’ve browsed the town’s renowned independent shops and cafes, head to Falcon Meadow or Outney Common for scenic countryside and riverside walks, or try one of two official trails: the Bigod Way
Trail focuses on the remains of the large Norman castle of the same name; whereas the Town Trail takes you to all the historic buildings and landmarks. Bungay’s Fisher Theatre is one of the oldest provincial theatres in the country, and regularly hosts plays, films, live music and exhibitions, so it’s always worth seeing what’s on while here. Has all that wandering got you feeling peckish? A visit to Fen Farm Dairy, which produces delicious raw dairy products, is an absolute must: be sure to pick up a wheel of their infamous Baron Bigod brie. Craft beer lovers will enjoy a trip to St Peter’s brewery, where you can take a tour, restock your alcohol cupboard or enjoy a bite at nearby St Peter’s Hall, a fantastic moated building dating back to 1280.
Lunch
Claiming to be Suffolk’s finest deli, Earsham Street Delicatessen offers a wide range of delectable baguettes, salads, quiches, sausage rolls, rare breed pork pies and sweet treats. Championing products from local and artisan producers, you’ll find everything you need to pack up a mouthwateringly good picnic. earshamstreetdeli.co.uk
WARDLEY HILL CAMPSITE Get back to nature at Wardley Hill, an ecological, family-run camping and glamping site in the Waveney Valley. The six-acre site encompasses woodland, a stream and three seasonal ponds. Wild flowers and grass are left to grow to encourage visits from bees and butterflies. There is a car-free camping field exclusively for tents, with another dedicated area for campervans. Facilities include composting toilets and an open top hot water shower. Campfires and dogs are welcomed. If camping isn’t your thing, the site also offer three locally crafted shepherd’s huts with all the modern conveniences and home comforts you could need. wardleyhillcampsite.com

Season two goes much bigger, looking to outer-space and the hunt for life beyond our planet. Host Laura Krantz speaks to a myriad of special guests including Navy Pilots who’ve seen strange lights, true believers at the UFO Festival in Roswell and scientists including Frank Drake and ‘Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence Institute’ cofounder Jill Tarter. Whether it’s seeking out Bigfoot in season one, or gazing skyward to look for extra-terrestrial life in season two, can the search for the unknown helps us better understand ourselves? Out&About
Book Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer From New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer comes a brand-new, captivating fantasy series set in a richly imaginative world. The corrupted kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of tragedy. A terrible illness has begun tearing through the land, with the only known cure to this terrible sickness being an elixir made from rare Moonflower petals. Within the Royal Palace, the King holds a tenuous peace with a callous hand while his younger brother Prince Corrick (the King’s Justice) is frantically trying to hold it together. The brothers must maintain order and as a result, have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion. Out in the Wilds, Tessa Cade is fed up with seeing her neighbours die and their suffering being overlooked by the royals. Each night, Tessa and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals to distribute the precious elixir to those who need it most, but it’s still not enough. As rumours start to circulate that the cure doesn’t work anymore, the sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King’s Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible - sneaking into the palace. But what she finds once she gets there makes her wonder if it’s even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first. Release date: 14 September.
To Break a Covenant
Apples Never Fall
by Alison Ames
by Liane Moriarty
Colorado-based author Alison Ames releases her hotly anticipated debut novel this month. The town of Moon Basin has been haunted for as long as anyone can remember. It all started when an explosion in the town's mine killed sixteen people. The awful disaster made it impossible for residents to carry on living in the town due to the roaring fires underground and the resulting ash that was spewing into the sky above, so the residents settled just outside of the town in New Basin. But life in New Basin is just as troubled… The town relies on its haunted reputation to attract tourists and travellers, but there’s more truth to the rumours than most are willing to admit, and the mine still has a hold on everyone who lives there. Best friends Clem and Nina meet a strange girl named Lisey (who has a knack for training crows) and Piper (whose father is fascinated with the mine in a way that’s anything but ordinary). The townsfolk start experiencing night terrors, sleepwalking and voices that only they can hear. And no matter how many vans of tourist ghost hunters roll through, nobody can get to the bottom of what’s really going on. Which is why the girls decide to enter the mine themselves. Release date: 21 September.
From the New York Times bestselling author of Nine Perfect Strangers and the Emmy and Golden Globe winning HBO series Big Little Lies comes Liane Moriarty’s newest novel surrounding marriage, siblings and how the people we love the most can end up hurting us the deepest. Liane approches this sinister thriller with her own intrinsic style making it an engaging read which is difficult to put down. From the outside, the Delaney’s appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they’ve sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to ‘relax’. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud. But now, Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are reexamining their parents’ marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes. Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household? Release date: 14 September.

Ethically-sourced beans from all over the world come together at this vibrant coffee shop. Kofra’s ethos is that a quality experience is as important as the coffee, so you’re guaranteed to get a warm welcome and friendly service. Bread Source
Ok, yes, it’s technically a bakery first and a coffee house second, but is there any better accompaniment to a good cup of Joe than some artisan breads and pastries? What’s more, they have an allyou-can-eat toast offer (plus coffee) for those who are eating in, as well as some of the best sausage rolls around.

A refreshing, healthier alternative to a glass of wine for those not so keen on the hoppy stuff. By using the leaf part of the plant (normally binned during the brewing process), the Good Living Brew crew was able to create a tangy, almost Prosecco-like, low-cal alternative to our grape-crushing friend - wine. Made from hop leaves like a beer, yet brewed with a white wine yeast, meaning it drinks like a sophisticated glass of sparkling white. The Binary Botanical team is passionate about promoting planet positivity, and repurposing ingredients that otherwise would go to waste - such as their hop leaves. By adopting a can within their range, they are further contributing towards the positive packaging revolution adopted by brands in the switch from glass and its fragility and heaviness, to a lighter more easily packable can.

What to experience the fun of Oktoberfest? Get along to one of these local events.
2021
Eaton Park
The Oktoberfest
is the world's largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair), which has been held since the year 1810. The original event was a celebration of the wedding of Kronprinz Ludwig, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. The citizens of Munich were cordially invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the fabulous royal event. In honour of the Crown Princess the fields were re-named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow"). They have retained the name ever since, however the locals have abbreviated the name simply to Wiesn. The festivities proved to be so popular that the decision was taken to repeat the event in 1811 launching what is now the annual Oktoberfest tradition which is an important part of Bavarian culture. Many other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modelled after the much loved original Munich event. If you are attending an Oktoberfest event you can expect a good selection of beer as well as a some foot stomping, table slapping Oompah music and loud singing. Need something to soak up the beer? Get stuck into a hearty feast of schweinshaxe (roasted ham hock), steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), würstl (sausages), knödel (potato or flour dumplings) and of course brezen (pretzels). All of which will are best enjoyed whilst wearing the traditional Bavarian clothing... dirndls and lederhosen.

cheese soup Try this traditional Bavarian soup... what could be better than a combo of beer and cheese?
INGREDIENTS: Serves 6 • 300g bacon, chopped to 2cm pieces • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped • 1 Jalapeño, seeded and finely chopped • 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped • 30g plain flour • 4 tbsp butter • 330ml bottle Pilsner beer • 500ml chicken stock • 250ml double cream • 300g mature cheddar • Chives METHOD: Heat a large sauce pan over a medium-high heat. Cook the bacon until crispy. When cooked transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to drain off any excess oil. Drain off the fat from the pan and then add the onion, bell pepper, jalapeño and thyme. Cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Reducing the heat to medium add the butter and stir until melted. Sprinkle in the flour a bit at a time and stir until fully absorbed. Pour in the beer, stirring constantly. Slowly add the chicken stock and cream, stirring until completely combined. Then bring to a low simmer. Add the grated cheese a handful at a time until melted. Season to taste and add in half of the cooked bacon. Garnish with the leftover bacon and chives.

LAUREN DAVIS King’s Cake Emporium 07731 800129 Gorleston, Norfolk
Lauren
from King’s Cake Emporium is a selftaught home baker who spends her free time creating delicious, fantastically decorated treats for special occasions. One day she’ll open her own bakery, but for now, she’s sharing her baking tips, tricks and know-how with Places&Faces. What to do with a “giraffey” banana? No, I haven’t gone crazy. Think of the pattern that appears all over on the long-necked animal and then think about a banana that has sat in your fruit bowl for quite a while and you may see the resemblance. This delicious recipe will be the end of those over-ripe bananas going to waste.
INGREDIENTS: Makes approx 8-12 muffins • 120g self raising flour • 120g sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • Pinch of salt • 100g chopped milk/dark chocolate • 1 beaten egg • 120g melted butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 very ripe bananas
METHOD: Heat your oven to 180˚C/Gas mark 4 and line a muffin tin with muffin cases. Sift the flour, sugar, bicarbonate of soda, cinnamon and salt into a large bowl, then stir in the chopped chocolate. Make a well in the centre of your dry ingredients. Add in the egg, melted butter and vanilla extract. Give this a gentle mix through. Mash the bananas and stir into the mixture. Don’t worry if you have some lumps, this is the texture we are looking for. Divide the mixture out between your muffin cases. Should you have a third “giraffey” banana laying around, top each filled muffin case with a piece of sliced banana and give it a brush with some melted butter. Bake for around 25-30 minutes until firm. Give them 5 minutes to cool in the tin before removing and allowing to cool completely on a wire rack.
1
You don’t need to make a special trip to the supermarket to buy caster sugar. This recipe (and many others you will be surprised to know) will work just fine with granulated sugar and it will save those pennies!
2
Dark chocolate is a little too bitter for my very, very sweet tooth but feel free to use either milk or dark chocolate, or even a mixture of both.
3
It is best to give the melted butter a little time to cool before adding it. This will prevent it heating the egg and melting the chocolate.
4
Finally, I think a little extra cinnamon never hurts, so if you add a little extra (on purpose or by mistake) you will get the thumbs up from me! 33

tapas MasterChef 2021 quarter finalist Michele Rodriquez-Wise cooks up some tasty tapas dishes... Michele is a creative and innovative designer by trade whose passion for food, family and design all stem from her warm Spanish heritage. Having grown up with creative parents, Michele has experienced different cultures and worlds and applied all of those to her exquisite repertoire of dishes. Michele’s passion for food, wine, hotels and restaurants is something she grew up with. Her parents came from the hotel and restaurant industry, running their own restaurant for over 30 years in Valencia, Spain where her elderly mother still lives today. More recently, Michele appeared on series 17 of MasterChef where she battled the competition to make it to the quarter finals. Her dishes were loved by many, with TV personality Greg Wallace stating "It's a very brave thing to do, and in that I'm quite impressed" following Michele's first ever attempt at a Thai curry without using curry paste. Having five daughters and two dogs, Michele understands how a home needs to function in order to satisfy everyone – and these tapas dishes are sure to do just that. 34
Clams
with white rioja & serrano ham INGREDIENTS: Serves 2 as a starter or 4 as a tapas dish • 1 kg of clams (preferably fresh) if not frozen (thaw before cooking) • 100ml of olive oil • Small white Spanish onion or shallot finely chopped • 4 large garlic cloves, crushed or finely chopped • 150ml of white rioja wine (or dry white wine) • 6 slices of serrano ham (one small packet) • 1/2 tsp of hot pimenton (Spanish spice normally in small tin) or paprika • 1/2 tsp of sweet pimenton • 1 tsp of plain flour • Garnish with small handful of chopped flat leaf parsley
METHOD: Soak fresh clams in a large bowl for approximately 20 minutes in cold water so that all the grit can be released. Rinse thoroughly in cold water. Please discard any that don’t close after tapping firmly with a metal spoon as well as any that are broken. Heat the oil in a large deep-frying pan with a lid on a medium heat and fry
the finely chopped onion and garlic for approx 5 minutes. Do not over cook or brown; the onions should be transparent. When cooked add the chopped ham and cook for a further 2 minutes. Keeping it at a medium heat add your pimenton spices and the flour and stir constantly for approximately 30 seconds. Now add your white wine ensuring you are stirring all the time. The wine will fizz, keep stirring until all ingredients come together. Drain the clams and add to the pan. Turn up the heat and stir or shake the clams vigorously making sure they have been mixed in well. Season to taste with salt and black pepper; don’t add too much as your clams are naturally salted and the salt from the ham adds an amazing flavour. As the clams cook they will release beautiful juices which will add to the sauce. Add your chopped parsley to the pan and then place on a tight fitting lid and cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes or until all of the clams have opened. If using frozen clams you may only need 2 minutes. Any clams that have not opened please throw away! Give it a last stir and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve into small bowls or individual dishes with some lovely crusty fresh bread and a glass of chilled white wine.

Cherry Tomato & Rosemary
Spanish Paella
with Monkfish, Prawns, Squid & Mussels INGREDIENTS: Serves 6
METHOD:
METHOD:
• A large pinch of saffron strands
Start by placing the flour into a large bowl. On one side of the bowl add the yeast and the on the other side add the fine salt, then mix everything together with a wooden spoon until combined. Create a well in the middle of the mixture and pour in the lukewarm water and 2 tbsp of olive oil, and then mix until you have a sticky dough. You can either knead this on a lightly floured surface for 10 minutes, or you can do this in an electric mixer with the dough hook attachment – knead until the dough is smooth and slightly less sticky. Once kneaded place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean tea towel. Leave in a warm place and allow the dough to prove for 1 hour until it has double in size. Preheat the oven to 200˚C. After the dough has proved, knock the air out by kneading it again briefly and deflating it. Grease a 25 x 35 cm baking tin with olive oil. Pull and stretch the dough so it roughly fills the bottom of the tin, then place the tea towel back over it and leave it to prove once again for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes your dough is ready to top. Use your fingers to make dimples in the top of the dough and to help spread it into the corners of the tin. Dot the cherry tomato halves across the top and then add small sprigs of the rosemary in and around them. Drizzle over 2 tbsp olive oil and sprinkle with Maldon sea salt. Place into the hot oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown on top and the tomatoes have softened and charred slightly. Remove from the oven and drizzle over the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil to soak into the warm bread. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin and slicing up whilst still warm. Serve with a mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip the bread into.
• 500ml chicken stock
Place the saffron in a glass with 1 tbsp water and allow it to steep and infuse. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a paella pan, then add the finely chopped onion and red pepper with a pinch of Maldon salt. Cook the onion and pepper for 5 minutes until softened, then add the crushed garlic and chorizo. Fry this for a further 3 minutes until the garlic is softened and the chorizo is sizzling and fragrant. Next add the smoked paprika and the paella rice. Stir this so it is well mixed with the other vegetables and chorizo and gently fry for a couple of minutes. Next add the white wine and allow this to bubble and mostly cook away before adding the chicken stock, saffron water and chopped tomatoes. Season the mixture with Maldon salt and cracked black pepper, mixing to combine. Now allow the mixture to bubble simmer for 5 minutes before dotting in the monkfish pieces, and then leaving to cook for a further 5 minutes. After 5 minutes mix in the squid rings and tentacles, the frozen peas and the prawns. Allow these to cook for 3 minutes before finally adding the mussels to the top of the pan. Loosely cover the pan with tin foil and allow the mussels to steam and open up – this should only take 2 minutes. Once all the seafood is perfectly cooked you are ready to serve. Top the paella with the chopped parsley, a final pinch of Maldon salt and the lemon wedges to be squeezed over. Bring the whole pan to the table to serve your guests.
• 100ml white wine • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 red pepper, deseeded and finely diced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 100g chorizo, diced • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 250g paella rice • 4 ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped • 1 tsp Maldon salt • Cracked black pepper • 200g monkfish, diced into chunks • 6 large prawns, shells on • 2 squid, cleaned, body cut into rings and tentacles kept whole • 12 mussels, scrubbed clean • 50g frozen peas • A small handful of parsley, chopped • 1 lemon, cut into wedges

Life&Living
Country Living As we head
into autumn, our attention turns to crisp strolls in the countryside, roaring log fires and hearty roast dinners. The cooler weather is no reason to stop enjoying the vast amount of great outdoors activities that Norfolk and Suffolk offer however; in fact, this is an ideal time of year to don your gilet, pop on your walking boots and get stuck in to some of these seasonappropriate country pursuits.
Clay pigeon shooting Activate your inner marksman and spend a day in the fresh air trying your hand at this historic and traditional sport. Fear not, no actual pigeons will be involved; instead you’ll take aim at clay targets fired from a machine or ‘trap’. The perfect way to release some stress and indulge in some healthy competition with your shooting companions, clay pigeon shooting is no longer just an activity for old boys and stag dos – anyone is welcome to have a go. For a fun-filled experience and expert instruction, head to The Big Shoot in Thetford, where you’ll be given personal tuition to ensure you’ll be smashing every clay sent your way in no time. Spectators are also welcome if anyone in your party doesn’t fancy taking part. If you’re in Norfolk, head to the aptly named Clays For Days, which is set in the heart of the Norfolk Broads and promises to be the next best thing out of the real shooting season. thebigshoot.co.uk claysfordays.com
Horse riding There’s nothing better than gently clip-clopping your way through a rural idyll or along one of our fine beaches in the golden autumn sunshine. Get in the saddle with Pakefield Riding School, which offers lessons, pony parties, riding holidays and activities to suit all equestrian enthusiasts and abilities, including a session of riding for the disabled. The school also offers beach riding, allowing you to enjoy the sand and surf on horseback. Beginner riders of any age can be led along the shore by a member of staff, so even those with no prior riding experience can trot their way through their first hack. Heading across the county, Lakeside Riding Centre in north Norfolk offer off-road riding through woodland, fields and the Worstead Estate, so there’s no need to worry about cars. Although they mostly cater to intermediate or experienced riders, beginners are very welcome and will be safely shown the ropes – or reins. pakefieldridingschool.co.uk lakesideridingcentre.com
Deer & wildlife safari Hop aboard Holkham’s tractor-trailer for a whistle-stop tour around its deer park. Sit tight while the knowledgeable guides tell you all about the resident herd of Fallow Deer that call Holkham home. Learn all about their habits, behaviours and characteristics and how to recognise a doe from a buck – during this period of the year it might be easier than usual! This is also the perfect time to witness the rut as the deer enter their breeding season. As the tour trundles through the park, look out for signs of life on the lake and in the famed big skies too. If you’d like to explore the park and its inhabitants further, there’s a full day guided walk around the reserve on offer. The route covers all types of habitats between Holkham and Burnham Norton – so sensible footwear and dressing for all weathers is advised – and focuses on birds, invertebrates, wildflowers, plants, fungi and trees. You’ll also learn about the history of the nature reserve and how the land is managed. holkham.co.uk 41

Wild swimming Of course, there are many hundreds of miles of coastline here in which to frolic, but wild swimming in our counties’ myriad peaceful rivers and Broads has exploded in popularity in recent years. Provided you are a confident swimmer, the benefits of freshwater swimming are great for both physical and mental wellness, so it’s certainly worth braving a dip. Plus, at this time of year, the water tends to still be relatively warm after a summer of sunshine. So, where’s best to go if you fancy a paddle? Santon on the Little Ouse near Thetford offers a pretty chalk stream that runs through the forest for the ultimate peaceful swim. City-based swimmers can get their fix in Norwich at Anderson’s Meadow, which is accessed opposite the Eagle Canoe Club. There’s ample space here for serious swimmers, casual bathers and canoes. On the Norfolk/Suffolk border at Outney Common near Ditchingham you'll find a 3km stretch of the Waveney meandering around open countryside with excellent water quality; drift along, admire the scenery and wave to the cows.
Fungi Foraging
Alpaca trekking
Canoeman activity days
If the thought of dragging yourself for yet another walk after a year of lockdowns makes the whole family sigh, we have the solution. It’s hard not to enjoy a stroll when you’re leading a friendly, fluffy alpaca! This unique and entertaining experience is offered by Alpaca Trekking, who take groups of humans and alpacas for strolls along the bridleways and stunning coastal paths of Wells-next-the-Sea and Stiffkey. Take in the views across the saltmarshes to the sea as your guide tells you all about the history of this beautiful coastline. Tracks and pathways may be uneven so make sure you wear suitable footwear and clothing. Treks can be from one to three and a half hours in duration, so you may want to bring along a picnic to stop and munch on if you opt for a longer trek. Don’t forget to pack some chopped apples to feed your charge at the end of the walk! This quirky group of alpacas are highly trained, so this is a safe and suitable day out for all ages. alpacatrekking.co.uk
Set in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, TheCanoeMan's Woodland Activity Centre offers a range of woodland capers, from wildlife walks through to archery, bushcraft and more. For the ultimate family adventure, give his Swallows and Amazons activity day a go – there are two dates in September and October to choose from. The day starts with a canoe journey to the main activity site, Big Wood, while keeping a look out for the wildlife that lives along the riverbank. Once at Big Wood you will be taught the useful arts of bushcraft; learning to light fires without matches or lighters; backwoods cooking; plant and tree identification and more. After a packed lunch, there’s an opportunity to further explore the woods before an afternoon archery session – find out who amongst you is the next Robin Hood. The day ends with a canoe journey back to the start point with further opportunities to get close to the river Bure’s resident wildlife. thecanoeman.com
Is there a more perfect seasonal activity than foraging for fungi? The UK is home to 15,000 species of wild mushroom or fungi, and knowing which ones can safely be picked and eaten is essential. Join Holkham’s Nature Reserve Guide to explore the surrounding pinewoods and dunes, which play host to some rare and fascinating fungi, including the elusive Tiny Earthstar and the fantastically named and shaped Dune Stinkhorn. The walk is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over and lasts for around three hours. Tickets includes parking and a well-earned coffee and cake at The Lookout after the walk. TheCanoeMan also offers a full-day fungi forage. The course consists of a morning identification session at Little Plumstead Village Hall before heading to the woods to rummage through the undergrowth. You’ll then return to base and sort through your fungi findings and try to fathom what you’ve found using identification sheets, books and of course, the knowledge of the onhand experts. holkham.co.uk thecanoeman.com
Walks There’s no finer time to get outside and appreciate the countryside’s changing foliage, and no easier way of doing just that than to step out on a walk. Crunch your way through piles of burnt orange leaves, scour the ground for conkers and work up a thirst for a hot chocolate (or, if we’re going for the full autumnal experience, a pumpkin spiced latte) in a café before heading home. Whether you visit a peaceful forest or wood, a wide empty beach or rolling countryside, we’re spoilt for choice for places to stroll here. For coastal delights and seal-spotting, head to Blakeney National Nature Reserve. If you’ve got a dog’s legs to stretch too, Blickling’s 4.5-mile estate walk encompasses plenty of picturesque parkland, woodland and historical points of interest. As this is a particularly good time of year for birdwatching, it’s also worth a trip round NWT Cley Marshes or RSPB Minsmere to see if you can spot the migratory birds arriving or departing our shores before winter.

The heart of the matter Fromus Veterinary Group, based in Saxmundham a few minutes from the A12 in coastal Suffolk, is delighted to announce a new cardiology service for pets in East Anglia.
The veterinary
cardiology service at Fromus Vets is run by Dr Rosie Barker GPCert(cardio) BVetMed MRCVS, who holds a General Practitioner Certificate in cardiology, and Dr Elliot Smith BSc BVSc MRCVS, who is currently studying for a CertAVP in Cardiology. Rosie and Elliot are experienced in diagnosing and treating pets with heart disease and offer echocardiography (ultrasound scanning of the heart) to diagnose an array of cardiac conditions in dogs and cats. The practice has a range of other diagnostic facilities available including an in-house laboratory, bronchoscopy, digital radiography and digital ECG, which is used in diagnosis of heart rhythm problems. Ground breaking research in recent years has changed how we treat dogs with certain heart diseases. Historically, we have only recommended treatment for dogs with heart disease once they have progressed into heart failure and developed symptoms such as difficulty breathing, lethargy, decreased appetite and reduced ability to exercise. However, the latest research shows that dogs suffering from one of the commonly diagnosed heart diseases, mitral valve disease or
Rosie and Elliot are aiming to help improve the welfare of dogs with mitral valve disease or dilated cardiomyopathy and help them live longer, happier lives dilated cardiomyopathy, can benefit enormously from receiving a medication before the onset of heart failure. The medication delays the onset of heart failure, providing a better quality of life for longer, as well as significantly increasing overall life expectancy. Many small breed dogs are at risk of mitral valve disease including cavalier king charles spaniels, terriers, poodles, chihuahuas and dachshunds. Many other larger breeds suffer from heart diseases too including labradors, border collies, dobermanns, boxers and German shepherds. Rosie and Elliot are aiming to help improve the welfare of dogs with mitral
valve disease or dilated cardiomyopathy and help them live longer, happier lives by raising awareness, screening for these diseases early and starting appropriate medication before heart failure occurs. The cardiology service at Fromus Vets is available to pets registered with the practice as well as those registered at sister practices, Eagle Vets in Halesworth and Castle Vets in Framlingham. For pets at other practices a referral can be made by contacting your usual veterinary surgeon. For more information call Fromus Vets on 01728 602599. fromusvets.co.uk 43

Make the most of the rich and diverse bounty on your doorstep by Andrew Hirst
Lazy shopping
is all too easy. Open the app and just a few seconds later your virtual basket is brimming with items from who-knows where? Shopping is the same as everything in life... if you want something truly great you have to put in a little effort. Covid has opened many of our eyes to the reality of local. Shopping from local suppliers ticks many boxes. Obviously it is better for the planet with less miles travelled from tractor to table, not to mention the packaging and plastics not used. Yes, of course it helps to support the local economy, creating jobs and putting the pounds in the pockets of our neighbours rather than helping the lovely Jeff Bezos buy another superyacht. The main reason for me is that the lazy shopping culture means that you miss out on all of the exceptional quality on offer in this bountiful region. East Anglia has award-winners aplenty, with exceptional companies and artisans pouring love and passion into their produce. Wine, sauces, pies, meats, art, jewellery, cheese... the list is as endless as it is diverse. The only thing you need to do is add a little effort. Head out to the local high streets and markets and you will soon be heading home with a bumper haul of amazing acquisitions.
Next day delivery is an amazing service. Aladdin would be stunned to witness that you can make anything you want appear... you'll just have to wait 24 hours if you have prime. The smartphone really is the new magic lamp to make all of our wishes come true. However the old adage is still ringing in our ears, "Be careful what you wish for."
shop local digital geek. When we went from lockdown to lockdown the savvy retailers hit the laptops and beefed-up their online shopping experience. Most probably found themselves caught in a no-mans-land having the online shop on the to do list but never really getting to it. The reality of Covid made it more of a necessity. Retailers needed an outlet
East Anglia has award-winners a plenty, with exceptional companies and artisans poring love and passion into their produce. Wine, sauces, pies, meats, art, jewellery, cheese... the list is as endless as it is diverse. Lazy shopping really is lazy shopping. Trawling the virtual mall from the sofa avoids leaving the house while you wait for the knock from the delivery driver. But the other weight is the one to watch. Is it really that much effort to head out and forage? We all need to up our step count so going the extra mile is worth the effort in many ways. Park further from the shop and march your way to better buys and a wonderful waist. Can you find it cheaper online? Is cheapest really best? What is the provenance of the super cheap items from these faceless outlets? At the end of the day it's down to personal choice, and how it fits in to your everyday. The most precious commodity on the planet is time. Heading off to the local farmers market may not fit with everyone’s school-run-office-juggle, so why not shop local online. Online doesn't mean abandoning the local cause. Shopping online from local suppliers is just as easy, you just need to use your head. Build up your local knowledge and be the 45
to engage with their consumers. Now that restrictions are eased, this online offering has added, a much needed, extra string to their bow. This way you can literally have your local cake and eat it; delivered direct to your door. Go out and get it or get it delivered? All you need is to do is put in a little effort to reap a great reward. So there really is no excuse not to shop local and love local.
To get your online local shop started why not check out these amazing products... you won't be disappointed. norfolkgin.co.uk stokessauces.co.uk paddyandscotts.co.uk lisaangel.co.uk stpetersbrewery.co.uk thenorfolkcheesecompany.co.uk suffolkfoodhall.co.uk

Fashion advice from Katy & Florrie, stylists at jarrold.co.uk
AS WE SAY
goodbye to the home office, the future of autumn/ winter 2021 fashion is brave and bold; with an array of prints from chintzy florals to confident leopard print. Breaking away from the neutral tones and classic basics of loungewear, the chillier months have never looked so bright. Florals are becoming more grown-up with midi lengths and longer lengths as seen with instore brands, Thought and Soya Concept, and styled with chunky black boots. Alongside botanical prints, there is a resurgence of true fashion maximalism with leopard prints appearing across different styles. Dresses, shirts and knitwear are showing brightly coloured and supersized animal prints. Stripes and chevrons are being mixed up for this season with oversized styles. Using this graphic pattern in strong colours and monochrome are making a lasting impact to capsule wardrobes. Investing in key pieces of fashion stripes from the ultra-classic Breton stripe to more playful rainbows will ensure a good basis as you move from autumn to winter, year-on-year. 50

5 The
Step Skincare Routine SARAH ROBINSON owner of The Norfolk Beauty Rooms norfolkbeauty.co.uk
Before
you begin to think about getting into a good skincare routine you should first properly understand your skin type before choosing your skincare products. When you are ready to begin here is a great five step routine to keep you on the right path to radiant skin.
STEP 1:
Precleanse & cleansing Precleanse to dissolve make-up as well as removing impurities such as sebum, sweat and pollution that is sitting on your skin. I recommend this step prior to cleansing your skin so it is prepared and you will get the all the benefits and absorption from the ingredients in your cleanser. Cleansing... this is the fundamental step of any skincare routine. Cleansing helps to clear your pores and get rid of any leftover product that might still be on your skin. This is also a great way to manage oil and prevent pimples and blackheads and hydrate the skin. Cleansing also prepares your skin to absorb other products that will come later in your skincare routine, like serums and creams.
STEP 2:
Toning
Try some of these amazing products from The Norfolk Beauty Rooms online shop www.norfolkbeauty.co.uk to enhance your 5 step routine
Toning is all about giving your skin an extra shot of nutrients and hydration.
STEP 3:
Applying serum Serums are highly concentrated formulas that address specific issues like fine lines, acne, dark spots, rosacea, etc. Even if you don’t have these specific concerns, an antioxidant serum is always a good choice to get you through the day and protect your skin. Vitamin C is a common daytime brightening serum that most people can use without issue. Retinol serums are common for people who want to stimulate collagen production to prevent wrinkles. Niacinamide serums, on the other hand, focus on treating inflammation and acne.
Biolumin-C serum Dynamic skin recovery SPF50 £66.50 30ml £81.50
STEP 4:
Moisturise Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Even oily skin needs a good moisturiser. Why? Because moisturisers are not made to make your skin oily, they are made to keep your skin hydrated... two different things. As we get older, our skin starts losing its ability to retain water and a good moisturiser becomes even more important.
STEP 5:
SPF If you only have time to do one of these five steps, this is absolutely the one. All experts recommend sunscreen as THE fundamental skincare product. Using sunscreen is the best way to prevent wrinkles, fine lines and, of course, skin cancer. It can even help to correct skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores.
Multi-Active toner £33
Precleanse 150ml £39

I’m a 41 year old mother of two girls and one French bulldog, and I’m a Personal Fitness Coach. I work one to one with clients aged 18-80, and have additional specialisms in pre and post natal training, GP exercise referral, cancer rehabilitation and pilates. I also run community fitness classes in the Suffolk coastal area.
Fitness...
It’s not a huge word, but it infers a wide variety of meanings. As a Personal Coach I am contacted almost daily by people who want to ‘get fit’. My very first question to those people is ‘What does fitness mean to you?’. I take a holistic view when it comes to my own fitness, and that of my clients, working towards being fit for life. Whatever your overall fitness aim, be it aesthetic or performance based, it is really important to ensure that you build and maintain a basic level of fitness across the board (cardiovascular, strength, and mental health), to help you easily deal with the varying demands of day to day life. The current guidelines for adults recommended by the NHS, is for: • 150 minutes of moderate activity per week (increases your breathing and heart rate, but you can still maintain a conversation), or; • 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week (Faster breathing and heart rate, difficult to talk). • Twice weekly do activities that build physical strength
Why is it so important to stay fit?
If you are someone who is just starting out on your fitness journey, it can be massively daunting knowing where to start. People often think that getting fit has to be really hard work, and means you have to join the gym, go to exercise classes, start running, or basically anything that looks really hard and painful! And you absolutely can and should do those things if they appeal to you. But my advice to anyone just starting out, who is maybe feeling a little overwhelmed is to just KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Don’t overthink things!
Moderate activity can include things like: taking the dog for a walk; playing at the park with the kids; going on a bike ride; going for a swim; housework and gardening; dancing! For strength based exercise for beginners you don’t need to go out and buy yourself a whole gym! You can do loads at home using some really basic bits of equipment such as resistance bands. The online workout market has exploded over the last year so if you need someone to guide you through there are thousands of follow-along workouts available to download and stream to suit you according to what equipment you may have, your level, age, goals etc! If you are happy to do your own thing, my advice for beginners is to start with circuits. Choose 5 or 6 exercises, and complete each one for 45 seconds, followed by a 30 second rest before moving onto the next. Aim to complete the circuit 2-3 times depending on how much time you have. The sort of exercises could include: squats, press ups, lunges, tricep dips, weighted bag carries (think heavy shopping bags); deadbugs (you may need to google this one!).
PHOTO: Foyers Photography
INSTAGRAM @chantelpipefitness
Equipment SUSPENSION TRAINER My favourite piece of home workout equipment is the suspension trainer (brand name TRX). These are so versatile, take up barely any space and can be used almost anywhere. You can pick up an unbranded one for as little as £14.99 from Decathlon, or splash out on a TRX. Suspension trainers are a great way to get a full body workout at home, and most come with a free workout guide. RESISTANCE BANDS A great space saving alternative to weights, these are a great tool to have for home strength training. I recommend buying a set as you are likely to need different strengths for different exercises.
The physical and mental benefits of being moderately active for those 150 minutes are huge! So just being moderately active for just over 20 minutes per day can; reduce the chances of developing, and assist with management and recovery of the following health conditions: type 2 diabetes, cancers, cardiovascular disease including stroke, joint and lower back pain, it can reduce fall risk; Improve sleep; Maintain a healthy body weight; Manage stress and anxiety; Increase confidence; Increase energy levels; Boost your immune system.

Love at first
Julie Handforth-Doidge Proprietor / Interior designer at JHD Interiors in Norwich
This month Julie sheds some light on interior design.
Creating
the right atmosphere in a room is all about balancing the resources and materials along with the space. One of the most important and often overlooked components is light. Everything from using the natural light available during the day to ensuring that the correct lighting effects are available in the evening. Getting it wrong can affect the whole dynamic of the room making it disjointed, dated and unwelcoming. As an interior designer there are three words I always have in mind when planning lighting: ambience, task and accent. Most importantly you must consider what you are going to use the room for and which features you would like to highlight. If the room is a multi-functional living space then you will have to consider more than one solution to light. A bright light will often make you feel alert and awake. Great for reading or working but not ideal for a bedroom. Softer lights create a different mood
and are much more relaxing and calming. LED lighting can cater for both and are much more energy efficient. Another option to consider is a dimmer switch, although it is worth spending a little more on a switch to avoid the dreaded dimmer switch buzz which is often an issue with the cheaper triac based switches.
energy saving bulbs meaning that you do not have the restrictions we had a few years ago. You can literally enjoy your lights on during the day to create an effect without the worry of your meter spinning around too quick. LED lighting is often used in the development of a kitchen to create a great look. Its not just under cupboard
Most importantly you must consider what you are going to use the room for and which features you would like to highlight. If the room is a multi-functional living space then you will have to consider more than one solution to light. Down lights in the kitchen can make the food preparation areas much more usable and help avoid those mishaps when slicing your onions. Down lighting can also be good for reading and used correctly is less distracting to others using the room at the same time for different activities. Huge advances have been made with the technology available, especially with
lighting anymore, think about your plinths and skirting. Also available in a vast colour palette which you can even control from your smart phone. Floor and table lights just give that finishing touch, and although they may not be the main source of lighting they can create some stunning visual effects. These come in many shapes, sizes and design... it is a chance for your imagination to run wild. JHD have several options on sale at the Horning shop which now has the exciting new edition of the coffee counter where you can enjoy one of the finest blends of coffee made by one of the skilled baristas, along with delicious sandwiches and cakes. So why not take some time to discuss your lighting and design dreams over a brew. JHD INTERIORS 01603 722 385 | www.jhd-interiors.co.uk

ble Community Care has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides livein care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...
Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...

Answer: The emergency numbers are: • 111 is when you need advice or medical treatment quickly, and you cannot wait for an appointment to see your doctor. • 999 this is the number for the emergency services - the ambulance, police and fire services. This is when there is a medical emergency – someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk. • 101 is the non-emergency number for situations that do not require an immediate police response.

• 112 This operates exactly the same as 999 and directs you to exactly the same emergency call centre. The important thing about 112 is that it will work on a mobile phone anywhere in the world. • 119 is to book a Coronavirus test. • 105 is if there's an electrical emergency. Call 105 from your mobile or landline and the telephone service will automatically direct you to the network distributor's emergency number for your area. Pension fraudsters prey on our concerns about financial market uncertainty. Carl Lamb shares some of the warning signs that you might be looking at a financial scam.
Financial
fraud attacks are something that many of us see on a daily basis – calls, emails and texts supposedly from your bank or telling you that you’ve missed courier deliveries have become commonplace. Hopefully we are all now wary of clicking on links in unsolicited emails or responding to people who try to get our bank details from us. However, pension fraud is perhaps less easy to spot and instances of attempted fraud have rocketed. Sophisticated scammers have redoubled their efforts during the pandemic and are worryingly convincing. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which regulates the financial services sector, recently reported that fraudsters had targeted pension schemes to the value of over £2 million in the first five months of 2021. One of the most successful ways that fraudsters tap into their prey is to offer a free online pension review, advertised on the internet. A few quick questions later and you are being persuaded that they can help you grow your pension to a level not achievable in your current arrangement or access your fund early. You give them your hard-earned pension savings and they sail off into the sunset, never to be seen again – probably in a yacht bought with your money… There are some very basic steps you can take to protect yourself from pension fraud. Firstly, you need to understand that you cannot access your UK pension savings until you reach

Secondly, you must ensure that the person giving you advice is a properly authorised financial adviser. You can check out the person and/or the firm they work for via the FCA website at www.register.fca.org.uk. Advice from an authorised adviser is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, giving you redress if anything should go wrong. In addition, the FCA website has a warning list of investments and opportunities that may be scams. A clear sign that you may be talking to a fraudster would be them putting pressure on you to make a quick decision. Time-limited offers may be fine for online shopping, but decisions about your pension should not involve offer deadlines. The FCA recommends an approach to possible scams which they call “flipping the context”. They suggest that if you see something online that is
cautious when looking at taking any action with your pension savings. Inspiring Women
Inspirin women Conny Gilbert Rachel Gilbert talks to another local inspirational woman, who is a little closer to home...
Growing
up, I never had to look far for an inspirational woman. I admired my teacher and lawyer aunts, and my doctor grandmother. Daily however, I looked no further than my mother, Conny Gilbert. Always pushing me and supporting me in every endeavour. I’m so grateful to have grown up with the most inspiring woman I know. Conny Gilbert didn’t reach her full potential in school, but she was always a determined fighter. In a career spanning 36 years, she rose from an administrative, technical assistant role, to subsurface management and senior reservoir engineer advisory roles. Her time spent in the oil industry moved her across several countries and two continents. Now, after moving from Houston, Texas back to Wells-Next-the-Sea, Norfolk, Conny has decided to devote her time to something slightly slower paced — swimming teaching. “I decided to leave the industry as it was harder to continue with my views on sustainability and climate change,” Conny said. “Although a lot of companies are trending towards renewable energies, I wanted to spend time doing something I love, and teaching children about water safety.” Conny is always looking for a new challenge or a way to stay busy. She completed her engineering degree with two young children at home while working full-time. Her husband Alan was studying for his degree at the same time. “We supported each other as a team throughout both of our careers. We always made choices that would support our family, and I knew that meant following Conny’s career to new opportunities,” Alan said. When I was little, I never understood what mum did for a job. I used to visit her office and draw different suggestions for how to find oil, although she never did take me up on the bucket and spade idea. What I did understand, however, was how much her team respected and admired her.

“You are only as good as your team,” Conny said. “You have to motivate everyone and support them where needed. Pushing for development and encouraging team building in different environments is key.” Some of Conny’s favourite memories involve team building: snowmobiling in Spitsbergen, Norway, clay pigeon shooting and sinking a canoe on the river Dee. I distinctly remember my parents arriving home from a team barbecue in chef hats and aprons, wielding a host of new memories. People would often ask me what my Dad did for a job, and I would proudly explain it was my mother who had taken us around the world. She was a role model for me and all of my friends growing up, many of whom were young girls dreaming of a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Although she would often be one of very few women in the room, Conny said she never felt pushback based on gender. At the start of her career, in Lowestoft, she only encountered one other female engineer, but was still pushed to success. Further on in her career Conny led a team of twelve with only three women, but pushed to recruit more. “A diverse team can only be a good thing as it will benefit everyone to bring different strengths, experiences and backgrounds to the team,” Conny said. Reflecting on her many years of optimising extraction, Conny decided her proudest moment was discovering the oil field, “Corvette.” She worked on the field from the discovery phase, through to presenting plans to the government and extraction — “it was great to see the project from the very start and follow all the way through,” she said. One of Conny’s favourite aspects of her job involved mentoring young engineers of all genders and backgrounds. She has proudly watched her mentees rise to success, with one now heading up Shell Norway. Conny’s mentoring always extended far beyond her office walls. Teamed up with my Dad, she would regularly cart my brother and I between swimming training, riding lessons, theatre clubs and maths clubs (I wasn’t cool, I know). She always pushed us the perfect amount to keep going and achieve whatever we set
our minds to. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” mum used to quote to me regularly. Now she has moved closer to home again, Conny has returned to her sporting roots. She comes swimming with me several times a week. When she isn’t giving me training orders, she is giving me a run for my money on sprint sets. Conny recently completed a 2.4 mile open water swim race in a cracking time, but rather than take a break, she immediately turned her nose for Somerset and the practical portion of her level two swimming instructor certification. “It is so important for children to learn how to swim, both for safety and for personal development,” Conny said. She will be teaching based off of her own experience growing up swimming for her home county. Although she is no longer in the field, Conny thinks it is important for more women and girls to follow in her footsteps and pursue STEM careers. “There are too few women in these fields and they add a different perspective and dimension to the teams,” Conny said. “Although there are few women in STEM arena, they shouldn’t be put off because women typically excel.” Personally, I can’t think of a better person to take inspiration from — but there is no bias here.
