Interview David
Beham
Still in the game Recently named the Sexiest Man Alive, the football superstar, fashion icon and dad of-four talks about his love of style WHEN IT COMES TO LOOKING GREAT, there’s no getting past David Beckham. A style icon since his early Manchester United days, the famous former footballer’s star has continued to rise; his looks changing continually and his income from corporate contracts meteoric. International companies clamour for his endorsement, knowing full well that David Beckham has the Midas touch and that if he’s wearing it – whether clothes, hair products or cosmetics – we’ll want it, with his looks copied around the globe. Despite the spotlight on his every move, however, David Beckham is still surprised by the attention, saying: “It still amazes me whenever I get a new tattoo or a new hairstyle, the amount that people talk about it. But I’m honoured because people want to talk about it in a positive way. It’s not something I complain about. I’m honoured and I feel lucky to be in the position that I am, for people to notice things like that.” David Beckham has been far more than a trendsetter, however; in the world of men’s fashion, he’s been a revelation. Brave enough to try all sorts of radical new styles, he’s carried most of them off and quickly given those that didn’t work the red card. We’ve seen Beckham in his pants, in a DJ and in everything in between. His 6ft frame, iconic face and magnetic smile have helped publicise a wealth of products, from sunglasses to aftershave, and his down-to-earth, approachable, sometimes almost self-effacing manner have meant that, despite his incredible fame and earning power, he remains a man of the people. Interview David
Beham
“David Beckham has been far more than a trend-setter; in the world of men’s fashion, he’s been a revelation” His forward-thinking approach to fashion means that he’ll give all sorts of styles a go, and when it comes to haircuts, his fans simply can’t keep up. We’ve seen him braided, bearded, with a crew-cut, Mohican, ponytail and hairband, both with ultra-short and very long hair, not to mention all the different colours. Before his next look can hit the newsstands, his devotees are at the barber’s with his picture in their hands, and with over 53 million Facebook fans, that’s a lot of haircuts! Towards the end of last year, David Beckham was named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by People magazine, America’s hugely influential celebrity and human interest bible, taking over the crown from Australian Adonis Chris Hemsworth who was awarded the title the year before. Speaking to People magazine, Beckham, 40, said: “It’s a huge honour, and I’m very pleased to accept,” adding: “I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person. I mean I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don’t ever think of myself that way.”
06
The great thing about David Beckham is that he clearly doesn’t take himself too seriously. When presented with the People Magazine award, he posted a message on Instagram, saying: “I thought I was past my sell-by-date, but thanks to People Magazine for the accolade and the compliment! “I always feel a little shy when receiving these awards, though it will make my Mum happy. This one the kids will laugh at, as they see what Daddy looks like in the morning!” And asked what his wife, Victoria, thinks of being married to the Sexiest Man Alive, Beckham said to People magazine: “I would hope that she feels this way about me all the time anyway!” Tongue-in-cheek, David Beckham then went on thank: “My parents, my hairdresser, my stylist and Photoshop.” Beckham, who was born in Leytonstone, London, and who is father to Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 13, Cruz, 10 and Harper, four, clearly works hard at working out, however, as shown by these recent pictures for Swedish High Street chain H&M. His toned, tattooed body helps sell clothes around the world, and he looks good whether simply wearing his underwear, in casual attire or when suited and booted. Interestingly, however, the famous former England captain is keenest on a simple, unfussy style. David Beckham said: “Style icons for me are people like Steve McQueen. He looked good in jeans and a T-shirt and he is one person who I
“Style icons for me are people like Steve McQueen. He looked good in jeans and a T-shirt and he is one person who I have always looked to for style and a kind of inspiration David Beckham
Interview David have always looked up to or looked to for style and a kind of inspiration.” Whatever he’s wearing and whatever he’s doing, however, you can be sure that David Beckham will always look the part. His many different roles have taken him around the world and back again: as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, as part of the successful team which brought the Olympics to London in 2012, and as a model for companies such as Adidas, Coty, Sainsbury’s, Samsung and Breitling. He is also a role model to us all, showing us that keeping in shape takes determination, hard work and self-belief and, despite having retired from professional football a few ywears ago, after his last stint for MLS side LA Galaxy in 2012, and his final game with Paris Saint Germain in 2013, he still insists on keeping fit. David Beckham said: “Being a sportsman, being a footballer, I’ve always had to keep my body in shape. These days more so. People are more healthy than they were 10 to 15 years ago.” There’s still hope for us mere mortals, however, as even David Robert Joseph Beckham has something about himself that he would change. Asked if there’s anything he dislikes about his body, he confided: “I would have to say, after 20 years of playing football, my toes are not good.” With his wife Victoria’s fashion empire currently booming, the focus on what David
Beham
Beckham wears is greater than ever. Fortunately he loves having the chance to dress up. He said: “I’m like my middle son. Romeo loves to wear a suit, so he gets that from me.” From his first-team debut with Man United aged 17 in 1992 to his retirement from the beautiful game in May 2013, the focus on David Beckham still remains stratospheric and his marketing potential seems limitless. So just what does he look for when it comes to looking good? David Beckham said: “Well it starts with the underwear, of course, so a good pair of my underwear would be nice. And then, you know, I always have a nice pair of vintage jeans, vintage boots and a white T-shirt – I don’t think you can go wrong with that. That’s always something that I make sure I’ve got.” Just as there have been errors on the football pitch (such as his infamous sending off during the 1998 World Cup), there have, of course, been the occasional fashion faux-pas, such as the matching outfits that he and his wife Victoria wore when they were younger, when the world knew them as “Posh and Becks”. Asked about those, David Beckham said: “Yes. I mean we’ve worn matching outfits over the years which some look good and some not so good. She always looked good in them but I’m not sure I looked as great as she did. But yes, the matching outfits are something that has happened over the years but not any more.” The couple married in July 1999 (remember those golden thrones?) and clearly David Beckham is very proud of Victoria’s fashion empire. He said: “She’s had such an amazing success with her line and I’m so proud of what she’s achieved. To go from a Spice Girl to be taken seriously in the fashion industry, that’s something special, and it’s a huge thing for her to be in the position she’s in, because she’s worked very, very hard and she deserves every success.” Asked what else makes him proud, David Beckham said: “My children. Simple as that. That’s my biggest achievement in my life – having four healthy children that are very good kids. And, you know, they’re beautiful as well...” So at this time of year, when most magazines are running New Year, New You-style articles, what can we glean from David Beckham’s approach to life? Clearly his focus is on making the most of himself, as well as focusing on his family and his myriad projects. He is a man who has the courage of his convictions and his experimental approach has inspired generations of men to try out new hair and facial hair styles and clothes. Not to mention the booming trade in tattoos, of course, which have been copied both by his fans and his peers (you only have to watch a Premiership-level football match to see the very latest in body art). No doubt David Beckham’s face will continue to grace magazine covers for the foreseeable future and clearly his art of looking good is ours to emulate – even in some small way. One thing’s for sure – David Beckham looks set to rule the fashion world for many years to come.

A Venetian adventure Clare Millar ventures away from the crowds, exploring the most magical of Italian cities
HENRY JAMES WROTE that Venice was best approached by sea. And, thanks to the public water boat system from Venice’s Marco Polo Airport, you can heed the novelist’s advice and arrive at your destination in a very romantic way for the cost of a local boat ticket.
G
ETTING YOUR BEARINGS can be tricky and a map or GPS on your phone is recommended. Venice is an archipelago of 118 small islands linked by 417 bridges and even in a short stay you’ll find plenty to do in the historic city (centro storico) which is crammed on to a compact island in the lagoon. The Grand Canal meanders through the city centre which is divided into six quarters or “sestieri” – San Polo, Dorsoduro and Santa Croce on the west side and San Marco, Castello and Cannaregio on the east. St Mark’s Square is the focal point for visitors, while the rest of the city’s tiny streets, squares, passageways and piazzas form a bewildering labyrinth. They say

getting lost in Venice is all part of its enchantment and I couldn’t agree more. The easiest way to get around, aside from strolling the streets, is aboard a water bus (vaporetto). Lines 41, 42, 51 and 52 circumnavigate the island, while lines 1 and 2 motor up and down the Grand Canal offering a pretty nearperfect view of this ancient passage. It’s easy to buy tickets at the vaparetto landing stages; single tickets cost €7.50, but a 48-hour pass can cost as little as €30 allowing you to hop on and off as you please (see: actv.it). Although Venice is home to an impressive collection of amazing churches together with epic architecture, one of the most satisfying things to do is simply to wander. Walk
down a narrow street and get lost. Within two minutes you’ll have lost your bearings but will be rewarded by vistas of sweeping canals next to terraces of all different colours reflecting the sunlight. If you’re visiting Venice for just a few days, these are my personal highlights: For culture head to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection set inside her own 18th century former home located in Dorsoduro on the south side of the Grand Canal. Not only is this gallery beautifully tranquil but you’ll also witness works of art from Leger, Kandinsky and Jackson Pollock from heiress Guggenheim’s private collection. Italy is undoubtedly the home of true craftsmanship and so many artisan WHEN TO VISIT Venice is a magical place at any time of the year. But my favourite season is winter, a time of misty vistas when tourists are few and far between, rooms are much cheaper and the city is reclaimed by Venetians. Be prepared for the crowds, but even at peak times you are never more than a bridge away from a secluded part of the city that’s waiting to be explored. – Visit: turismovenezia.it

crafts, and there are notable areas to explore where age-old traditions are still practised. Venice’s speciality is fine glassware made on the nearby island of Murano where visitors can meet local artisans and watch them at work.
ST MARK’S BASILICA and the PIAZZA Essentially the centrepiece and most visited area of Venice, St Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) is a jaw-dropping ACCOMMODATION Venice has no shortage of hotels but my choice is always LaGare Hotel Venezia. Built as a 13th century monastery and repurposed as a glassmaking kiln during the 19th century, it is perfectly located on the island of Murano. The stylish 118-room hotel boasts beautiful pieces of modern glass designed by Murano specialist, Venini. For those put off by the crowds in Venice, LaGare Hotel has considerable appeal. It’s only minutes by vaporetto from the main sights and is easily reached from the airport. Best of all, at night it’s blissfully quiet and full of real Venice charm. – Double rooms from £85. spectacle. At the eastern end lies the basilica built to house the remains of St Mark the Evangelist plundered from Alexandria, Egypt, in 828 A.D. Legend has it the Venetians hid the relics in a barrel under layers of pork to slip past Muslim guards, with the story later depicted in a mosaic above the portal to the extreme left of the front entrance. While Venice is littered with Baroque churches, St Mark’s Basilica is an awesome sight, with massive marble columns, graceful arches and lead-clad onion domes. Look carefully or you’ll miss a selection of ornaments brought back over the centuries by Venetian merchants from the Orient.
R I A LT O B R I D G E a n d PRODUCE MARKET This beautiful bridge is the centre point of the city. The left bank houses the mercantile city of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice with its atmospheric morning produce market. Rialto Market is a feast for the senses as local fishmongers and farmers unload trays of fresh squid, cuttlefish, crabs and clams, alongside baskets of whatever produce is in season,
from cherries and grapes to peas and asparagus. If the old adage about eating with your eyes first is true – mangiare con gli occhi, as the Italians would say – you will leave feeling very full and very happy.
V E N E T I A N V I S TA S Seize the opportunity to leave the more famous sights to the crowds and instead drink in the less overt charms of this watery wonderland. For an unforgettable Venetian vista, catch a vaporetto bound for San Giorgio Maggiore. Hop off at the 16th-century Benedictine church and ascend the bell tower (admission charged) where the spectacular panorama spans the lagoon and more than 100 islands interconnected by canals big and small that make up this most magical of Italian cities.
...and FINALLY To gondola or not to gondola? Yes, it is a cliché, and it is expensive, but if you have travelled long and far to Venice, then perhaps you should.

Motors Skoda What’s new? With Skoda keen to move its image and cars upmarket, this third generation Superb offers big car levels of refinement to match products from the likes of Volvo and Mercedes. Building on the success of the previous two versions, this Superb continues the focus on extra generous cabin space, while the car’s saloon-like profile is more of an optical illusion as it’s actually a five-door hatch. Progress dictates that the Superb benefits from an improved range of engines and transmissions, while Skoda’s increased focus on safety matters has resulted in the availability of a raft of clever driver assistance aids. One thing that is missing from the new car is the previous model’s ingenious dual opening boot, which allowed both hatch and saloon functionality.
Looks and image Conservative with a small ‘c’ is the order of the day here, with Skoda understandably sticking to a formula that works. The car’s lightly chiseled flanks add a welcome air of refinement but that’s about as extrovert as the Superb’s appearance gets. For the target
audience this is unlikely to be an issue, as they are also a conservative bunch more interested in what the car can do, not what is says about them.
Space and practicality Since day one the Superb has earned a reputation for being a practical and spacious car capable of accommodating four adults in more comfort than your average German saloon costing twice as much. This remains true today, and thanks to a voluminous boot the ability to carry a full compliment of luggage without any compromises has also proven popular with private hire operators. Along with acres of rear legroom there’s also ample space up front plus the usual array of family friendly oddment storage spaces.
Behind the wheel Despite the Superb easily matching many more expensive German models in terms of space and refinement, Skoda has never pitched its flagship model as a sporty car. With the focus very much on ease of use, comfort and space, there’s very little reward for hustling the big Czech motor into corners. Driving pleasure comes from relaxing in the
Superb
plush cabin and making the most of the equally plush ride. In real terms you’ll derive more pleasure from letting the Superb’s engine range take the strain, specifically the 2.0-litre diesel unit. Its modest 150 horsepower in base trim is ample even for a car of this size and, when mated to an auto gearbox, you get the full-on luxo-barge experience but with an Aldi price tag. If diesel doesn’t appeal there’s also a good number of petrol units plus a four-wheel drive option giving the Superb added all-weather appeal.
Value for money The on-paper figures are hard to ignore. For the price of a mid-spec Ford Mondeo you can have a well-equipped and more spacious Superb, boasting an impressive level of standard kit and every day practicality. Despite the car’s premium level aspirations running costs should be closer to the aforementioned Mondeo, thanks in part to a range of clean and frugal engines.
Who would buy one? For private hire operators the Superb has always been a smart buy and this much improved model is no different. For everyone else, Skoda’s plush flagship trumps many mainstream and more expensive rivals when it comes to cabin space, refinement, kit and ease of use. Factor in the car’s classy yet understated looks and it’s hard not to warm to it if you’re seeking an upmarket experience that won’t break the bank.

It’s a special type of mortgage based on the fact that you will not be the permanent resident, and so is assessed differently to a normal mortgage. Unlike a residential mortgage, where how much you can borrow is based on your own income (among other things), a buy to let mortgage is assessed based on how much rent the property can generate.
What is the difference between a buy to let mortgage and a standard mortgage?

What is a buy to let mortgage? The definition of a buy to let property (sometimes referred to as ‘buy to rent’ or ‘BTL’) is a type of property investment, in which the investor becomes a landlord and rents out the property for profit. A buy to let mortgage is a loan secured against one of these properties. Like any form of investment, there’s a lot to consider before you can make the jump (and hopefully start making some money). This page has been designed to cover it all, and have buy to let mortgages explained in a simple way, so if you’re a first time buyer of a buy to let property, this guide should help you get things started.
“Like any form of investment, there’s a lot to consider before you can make the jump (and start making some money)”
A buy to let mortgage differs from its residential counterpart in that it is largely assessed on the property’s profitability, i.e. how much rent it can generate vs. the cost of the mortgage – rather than on your own personal financial circumstances. That said, many buy to let lenders will require you to have a minimum salary, typically £20,000 or £25,000. Once approved, your buy to let mortgage enables you to rent out the property to tenants, whereas you cannot do this with a residential mortgage. Other notable differences include:
Interest rates It’s common for the interest rates on buy-to-let mortgages to be higher than residential mortgage rates.
Deposit and property value The minimum deposit you need to put down for a buy to let mortgage is higher than it is for a normal residential loan. Typically, you will be required to cover at least 20% of the property value yourself on a BTL mortgage.
Arrangement fees Arrangement fees on a BTL mortgage can be higher than on a conventional mortgage. You may also come across more arrangement fees that are calculated as a percentage of the amount you’re borrowing, rather than just a flat fee. It is also common for conveyancing costs to be slightly higher for a rental property.
