2nd Halesworth Brownie Pack It's been some time since we last reported, almost eighteen months in fact. Our last meeting was on 10th March, 2020. Little did we know... This was going to be our last face-to-face meeting for over a year. The girls had been busy that term working towards their Live Smart, Stage 2 and Jobs Interest badge under the Skills for my Future theme of the Brownie programme. During the first lockdown, Alison and Laura Nichols (Koala and Panda) made their long awaited move up to Chesterfield. We're pleased to report that they've settled in really well to life up north and enjoyed catching up with them recently when they visited Suffolk. We wish them all well in their new home. We've thoroughly enjoyed working as part of the 2nd Halesworth team for many years, expertly led by Alison and we'll miss them both terribly. Alison and Sheila started up 2nd Halesworth Brownie pack back in 1985, and Alison has given over fifty years of service to Girl Guiding! We were disappointed not to be able to give them a special Brownie send off and farewell, but hopefully we'll be able to make up for this sometime in the future. Also, we've sadly lost Carys due to work commitments, but we hope to see her occasionally as and when she can. Towards the end of last year, we decided to give Zoom

Halesworth Town Council

CARRINGTON, Reginald

Brownies a go! This was a huge learning curve for us, but after talking to Martha at Bungay Guides, we felt it could work, and it certainly did! It's been a fantastic way to connect and keep in touch with girls while we've not been able to meet. We've been busy with quizzes, games, bingo and even Zoom crafts, with the girls creating some wonderful paper flowers, thaumotrobes, colourful paper fish and a bobble hat bottle topper! We're now looking forward to being able to meet again next term, starting with a picnic in the park. We said farewell to: Tia, Sophie, Hollie and Freya last year and this term we say farewell to: Ava, Brooke, Ella P, Iris, Isadora, Natasha, Poppy and Ruby P. It's a shame your time with Brownies was cut so short, but we've enjoyed having you at Brownies and we wish you all the best for the future. We hope you'll enjoy being guides for those who chose to do so. Once we've started back in September, we'll be looking forward to welcoming some new Brownies, currently on the waiting list. We're delighted to welcome Sarah Warne to the team as our new unit helper. Sarah used to be a Brownie with us some years ago and has started working towards her leadership qualification. We hope to have some more news for you next month. Sheila, Karen, Sarah, Katie and Jenna

In loving memory. Passed away at home on July 12th, 2021 aged 89 years. Adored husband of Rita, he will be greatly missed by all his family and many friends. A funeral service for Reginald was held on Monday August 9th, 2021 at Waveney Memorial Park and Crematorium. Rita would like to extend her sincere gratitude for all of the cards, kindness and support given to her at this difficult time. If you feel you would like to, donations are welcome in Reg's memory for Breast Cancer UK and may be sent c/o: Rosedale Funeral Home, Arcadia House, 19 Market Place, Halesworth IP19 8BB.

NORTON, Janet Ann Bernard and his family wish to extend their sincere gratitude to the many family and friends who were able to join them for Janet's funeral service at Seven Hills Crematorium on the 28th May, 2021. They also wish to thank everyone for the cards, kindness and ongoing support at this difficult time. To date, a combined total of £397.50 has been raised in Janet's memory for Leukaemia UK. If you would like to gift a donation in her memory, you can still do so by visiting: www.janetnorton. muchloved.com

Halesworth's Neighbourhood Plan is getting closer to completion. Creating a Neighbourhood Plan is usually a three or four year process and we're on track to deliver our Plan. Early in the Autumn, we'll be holding some special events to showcase our work on creating your plan. Members of the Neighbourhood Plan Group have been focusing on the seven objectives that you identified as the key focus for our Plan. You can find these objectives on the Town Council website. The group has been working on practical and achievable proposals to enhance and improve Halesworth whilst providing clear evidence that these proposals meet the needs and wishes of Halesworth residents. The Neighbourhood plan group have also presented individual sections of the draft NP to Halesworth Town Councillors. We are set to present the final two sections to Council on September 1st. Earlier this Summer, we also led a consultation on the Town Centre Connectivity project, this is just one part of the Plan, like each of the seven plan objectives, this was looking at possible ways to improve different parts of the town, to connect them more effectively to benefit both tourists, businesses and local residents. The aim is to make it a better connected town which will help it thrive. Just imagine if you were arriving in Halesworth for the first time: How would you know that there was a fantastic Millennium Green? How might you find the lovely Town Park or

Thoroughfare from the station? How would you get from the Thoroughfare to the Market Place with its magnificent ancient buildings? This is a large body of work supported by Halesworth Town Council, for the future. We want to thank everyone who joined us for the Connectivity Project Zoom meeting and Town Walkabout. It was fascinating to hear people's views and ideas, and their passion and concern about the town's future. Finally, we want to let you know that on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November, we'll be showcasing the Neighbourhood Plan at our special Neighbourhood Plan Weekender. There'll be an exhibition of each of the objective areas and the Connectivity project, a whistle-stop tour of each objective area, the chance to take part in workshops with members of the plan group and a Q&A session which will be live-streamed and available for downloading afterwards. Further details of the Neighbourhood Plan Weekender will appear in September and October. Creating a Neighbourhood Plan is the best way of ensuring that everyone in Halesworth has a say in how the Town grows and develops, and to secure additional funding from developers through the CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) money to go directly to our town. We look forward to sharing Halesworth's Neighbourhood Plan with you and to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Deben Rotary news

U3A East Suffolk plans a return to normal activity

The new Rotary year at Deben Rotary is now well under way under the leadership of our new President, Deirdre Griffin. We've resumed meetings at Ufford Park in a Covid-safe manner, and by the time you read this, we'll have held our Charity Golf day, raising money for Woodbridge Riding for the Disabled and our Club charitable trust. We also attended the recent Kesgrave Fun Day, where our golf putting game and 'Splat the Rat' proved to be very popular with the public. Our charity busk is on Saturday September 4th in the Thoroughfare in Woodbridge. At a recent meeting at Ufford Park, President Deirdre presents our Community Award to Emma Needs, who is the secretary of the Melton Good Neighbours Scheme. During the pandemic, the scheme has given invaluable service to the people of Melton, assisting with shopping, picking up prescriptions and generally

As this is written, it's early days and impossible to predict what the autumn will bring. The Suffolk Local History Council

Mills Grammar Would you like to be the Local School reunion

Recorder for Aldeburgh? The Suffolk Local History Council (SLHC) runs a Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the 'present' is adequately recorded at local level for the 'future'. A Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and

newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they're asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items. If you're interested, please look at the Recorders Pack by visiting: www.slhc.org.uk to acquaint

yourself with the guidelines of the scheme. You do not need to be a historian. You do not need any qualifications, other than an interest in your parish. In return, you'll receive a copy of the SLHC newsletter and be invited to the annual conference specifically for Local Recorders. To volunteer to help in this important work, please contact: recorders@slhc.org.uk. 173499

Sat 11th September Mills Grammar School Association Summer Reunion and AGM at Thomas Mills High School 2pm-5pm. All Old Girls & Boys are welcome. Traditional 'Mills Tea' is provided. Kind regards, Liz Kerridge, Treasurer, Mills Grammar School Association 01394 420316.

It seems very unseasonal to be having another summer with no art exhibitions, fetes, garden parties etc. Weekends seem strangely quiet without a visit somewhere involving lots of chat, a cup of tea and some cake and the purchase of raffle tickets. With this in mind, I'm sure we at Thorington are not alone in thinking of getting back to fundraising, trying to get members of the community to contribute their time and effort as well as to dig deep in their wallets. Hopefully, these gatherings can begin again soon with a greater appreciation of the enjoyment that we feel in meeting and communal achievement.

Cooking For One will feature dishes which are ideal to prepare for solo diners who have recently lost a loved one. The book features a wide range of recipes featuring simple dishes for those who may not be used to finding their way around a kitchen. The recipes are wholesome and nutritious, but there are some decadent dishes too. Cooking For One is the idea of Simon Beckett-Allen, who co-owns Rosedale Funeral Home which has bases around Norfolk and Suffolk. Simon was inspired to create the cookbook in memory of his late sister, who was a chef. The proceeds of the book (which will be published in September) will support Cruse Bereavement Care, which is the largest charity of its type and supports over 50,000 people dealing with grief each year. Simon wanted to draw on his own experiences to help others. He said: "I've always found cooking very therapeutic especially when I'm on my own, and preparing food is a very pleasant pastime. After a bereavement, people can lose the enthusiasm to cook for themselves, and I really hope Cooking for One will help with that." As well as a wide range of recipes to prepare and dishes to enjoy, there are also stories from the contributors who share their journeys and provide advice and comfort too. The book features contributions from a range of people who have all lost a loved one including Norfolk-based actress Liza Goddard, writer and businessman Sir John Timpson CBE, and popular Norfolk chef Richard Hughes. As well as highlighting the meals that are important to them, they also share poignant memories of their loved ones. Simon said: "Cooking for One contains no platitudes about what a great healer time can be. It's a candid account of the raw pain and utter loneliness that grief can bring about. As well as containing delicious recipes, it aims to serve as a handbook designed to help navigate the personal pathway of grief." The book goes on sale on September 16th, costs £20 and

Cancer Research UK Halesworth branch On Saturday 31st July we held our Summer Fair at Holton Village Hall and the committee would like to say a huge thank to everyone who came out to support us. With your help, we raised a fantastic £2,260. We can't do this without you. It was great to be back and catch up with everyone and we hope everyone enjoyed the fair. The committee would like to thank the following businesses for either donating food for the lunches or providing funding to enable us to purchase what we needed: Halesworth Coop (Rainbow) who have supported us for many years and for their continuing support, Tesco's,

Coop Funeralcare Halesworth and Spectra. We'd also like to say thank you to: Nicki and Neil Kerridge from Market Fields Farm Shop in Holton who also have supported us for many years for their continued support. Providing a beautiful food hamper and for selling the tickets in their shop prior to the sale. Committee members Sue,Nicki and Arlette for putting together the gin hamper for the lottery bonus ball. Morrison's for providing a lovely hamper for the raffle. Coop Funeralcare Halesworth for also providing a lovely hamper for the raffle.

Thank you to everyone else who generously donated some fantastic prizes for our very successful raffle. Dunelm very kindly gave us the money from their charity fund to enable us to buy from them some smart new tablecloths. Although we did use some of these on Saturday, you'll see them to their full effect when we do the 'Big Breakfast' in March. So a big thank you to Dunelm. A lot of people enquired where the jacket potatoes came from as they were delicious. We always get our potatoes from Nicki at Market Fields Farm Shop Holton. We've a hard working team of volunteers that the committee

relies on when we put on these large events. You are truly valued and we're so grateful for everything you do for Cancer Research. Finally, a massive thank you from me to all the committee members for their hard work on the day and also to the committee members and volunteers who made all the delicious desserts and quiches. Well done. Our next event in Holton Village Hall is our Jumble Sale on Saturday 16th October. We'll be serving teas and coffees and scrumptious cakes. Following what has been an unprecedented period in our recent history, the economy is now growing again and as a result there are lots of new employment opportunities out there. It has recently been reported that in July there were more than 1,000,000 job vacancies in the UK which is an all-time high. Here we are looking at what that means to us locally whilst highlighting a few businesses that are among the many that are recruiting. Of course, for those who are looking for a change of direction or a fresh challenge, reports of record-high numbers of vacancies will be welcome news. So, what does that mean to us here in our corner of the world. Naturally, there are jobs a-plenty in the larger towns or cities for those who fancy a complete change – but if you are looking to stay closer to home there are numerous benefits. If you are working locally you are supporting, independent businesses, arts and culture, and the wider community. A greater percentage of money spent on the high street will stay in the town (as opposed to online or in large national chains) and this can only be positive. There is also the obvious

In our last report, we stated our intention to start meeting again as a church at Cratfield on August 1st. That didn't happen because of rising Covid rates at the time, and the new date of September 19th has been set. Hopefully by then, everyone will feel more comfortable worshipping and sharing in person. In the meantime, we'll continue with our 'HCC Sunday Sharing' via Zoom, which has the advantage of enabling people on holiday to still join us. All this reminds us that we cannot predict the future. Forgotten letters unveil Halesworth history

172495

'Uncle Billy's Box' sat overlooked in a Southwold flat for decades. An old 1st World War ammunition box, due to be discarded as part of a decluttering exercise, it was opened in 2015. Inside lay over two-hundred letters exchanged among members of the Lincolne family who came to Halesworth in 1816 to run what was to be Halesworth's biggest store, a drapery and grocery business on the Market Place.

month by the Halesworth and District Museum. As leading citizens of the town and strong Congregational Church members, the Lincolnes were well placed to observe the comings and goings and the ups and downs of the town's life before and during Victoria's reign. Indeed, the young Queen's coronation, as celebrated in Halesworth with a dinner of cold roast beef and plum pudding for 1,200 poor people served up on tables along the length of the Thoroughfare, is one of the events vividly recorded by Mrs Lincolne. The fundraising for the new Congregational Church in Quay Street (now the URC) and its grand opening, battles with the Rector over the church bells at St Mary's, letters home from boarding school in Beccles and much more about life in the town are brought to life, alongside comments on national politics and events and some heart-warming and sometimes tragic records of life, courtship, marriage and death in the family. Chair of the Halesworth Museum Trustees, Pauline Wilcock, is excited by the forthcoming publication: "It's quite thrilling for a small

REFLEXOLOGY & MORE..........

Luckily, Helen Wolvey (a descendant of the Lincolne family) was intrigued. As she opened the thin, folded sheets of paper, some of them almost 250 years old, she realised she was now in possession of a treasure. She's spent the last six years teasing out the difficult handwriting to uncover the stories they reveal. Now, with co-author David Wollweber, she's brought the story of the Lincolne family back to life in a book due to be published this

This long-established team is emerging from lockdown and, from September, will be rehearsing and planning programmes to suit a range of audiences. Our repertoire includes traditional, classical and seasonal music. Engagements include weddings, WI and other

These events will be advertised through various outlets including Community News and the library. Why not drop in on one to find out more? Or join us at one of our practice sessions. I'm sure readers will be as surprised as I was to find how vividly the lives of the Lincolnes and the life of Halesworth leap off the page." 'The Lincolne Letters' will be launched as part of the Two Rivers Book Festival on Saturday September 11th. Sadly for Edgar Sewter Primary School, the end of term saw the retirement of Mrs Grace Rogers. She's been connected to the school for over thirtyfive years, starting with her children attending and then her volunteering, hearing readers before becoming a Midday Supervisor. Since then, Grace has worked across the school as a Learning Support Assistant before spending the last few years in the office. Many parents enjoy saying hello as she stands at the gate come rain or shine, morning and afternoon. Halesworth Volunteer Centre Shopping and medication pick ups We're still providing a shopping service thanks to our brilliant band of volunteers. If you have to isolate, become ill or can't manage to shop for yourself, do give us a call and we'll help if we can. Just ring 875600. Getting out and about We've been delighted to be able to arrange a couple of tea parties and a trip out to the Factory Shop in Wrentham for local people who have not been out and about during the long months of this pandemic. Our tea parties at the Pear Tree and the Coop Café were very successful and our trip to the Factory Shop was a hoot. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen including the Pear Tree team and Rose and Maureen at the Coop Café. All our trips have been made possible by the Julia and her team at Hact, taking people on the bus is a joy. We have other trips in the pipeline, so if you want to find out more about these events, please speak to Karen on 875600. The Community Car Service

Our Community Car Service is back in full operation. However, we're noticing increased demand for journeys to hospital. We're not only taking people to Ipswich, Norfolk and Norwich and James Paget Hospitals but also going as far as Bury St Edmunds and even Addenbrooks. Normally, we'd expect to see a reduction in appointments but such is the backlog, most clinics are remaining open. Also, people are often being offered hospital appointments at very short notice. This means that we will have to prioritise journeys to hospital and medical appointments over other less essential journeys. We hate having to say no to a journey as we realise that all your appointments are important but please understand if we have to say no. We'd also request that you book your appointment at least three days in advance if you can. The Community Larder The Community Larder is going from strength to strength. The Larder is a food exchange. So, if you have any extra food or household goods that you'd like to

swap or just want to pop in and see what's there, please come down and meet our wonderful team of volunteers. Remember, the Larder is open to everyone. The Larder is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10:3011:30am.

As part of the Gift Programme, we'll be organising a community meal soon, we have been rather disappointed by the weather but we plan to run as soon as we possibly can.. Isolation Busters We know that the Pandemic has left many people feeling

isolated and alone. It can be very hard to talk about this, but if you feel you'd benefit meeting with a befriender or know a neighbour or a friend who would, please let us know. Also, we're always looking for volunteers to join the team, so do give us a call on 875600. And finally...

We were much saddened to hear of the death of our Volunteer and friend, Alan Middleton-Stewart. During the first lockdown, Alan was the friendliest of voices at the end of the phone. Later, he delighted our volunteer shoppers with gifts of delicious fruitcake in his role as

Santa and then the Easter Bunny. Alan made a huge contribution to the local community: in Halesworth, Spexhall and Wenhaston and was a great ally and friend to so many. Alan was generous, kind and always so grateful for the support of our volunteers. We will miss him.

Her new novel is inspired by the little-known story of Ann Camell of Southwold, who, in 1645 was accused of bewitching a sailor, William Whitton. 'This Fearful Thing' by Reydon author L M West is extensively researched and tells the sometimes harrowing story of a woman accused of witchcraft, not once, but three times and her fight to survive. Ann was the wife of Thomas Camell, whose family once owned what's now Sutherland House in Southwold High Street and the novel is set very much in Southwold and the surrounding landscape as it may have been four-hundred years ago. Laina will be talking about her writing and signing copies of her book. Tickets are £5 including a glass of wine or juice. Available from Southwold Library 01502 722519 or www.ticketsource.

Wishing Goldstar Fencing & Gates every success

173158

From the name there can be little doubt what Goldstar Fencing & Gates Ltd do. Yes, you've got it, they do all things fencing and gate related. However, there is a fair bit you may not know about this business that has recently arrived at Blyth Road Industrial Estate in Halesworth. Though the business is new to Halesworth, Goldstar Fencing & Gates Ltd was originally established in 1969 so has over fifty years' experience in the industry. Now, under new ownership, the company continues to go from strength to strength. From their premises in Halesworth, the team manufacture a range of high quality handmade bespoke panels using traditional methods. Their strength is being able to make panels by hand to fit that awkward space. The panels are pressure treated to help prolong longevity and capped with weather capping to help provide protection against rot. The team also supply concrete and wooden posts, gravel boards, cant rails, capping, featheredge, post-mix and post and rail, basically, all the requirements needed to erect a fence. You will also find a range of trellis, finials

and gates with galvanised gate furniture and fittings. Serving both the public and trade sectors with domestic, industrial and agricultural clients across East Anglia, Goldstar are a growing business with a growing reputation. It is well documented that over the last eighteen months more and more of us have spent time in our gardens – we have been told to stay at home and so we have made the most of any outdoor space we may have. With that in mind we have also had more time to notice things we would like to change and improve, and this is where Goldstar Fencing & Gates come in. We all know that your garden will look pretty with nice planting and a well-maintained lawn, but what you may have previously over-looked is the role your fencing plays in how the garden looks. The team at Goldstar see the fence and the frame around the picture that is your garden – saying that the right fence can help create a bright and open garden whereas the wrong fence can contribute to a dark and gloomy space. Have no fear, the team are on hand to help and offer the benefit of their vast experience

and expertise. They can also make bespoke gates to match the style of fencing you have selected for your garden. This really does add the finishing touch! Perhaps you are in the trade and have a building firm or garden design business. In which case, you may not need the expertise of the team at Goldstar to help pick the right product. However, what you do need is a business that can supply you with what you want and when you want it. Being located in Halesworth, Goldstar are perfectly placed to cover East Anglia and can help with any enquiries or requirements you may have. Quality is of paramount importance here – these products are designed to last which is great as you don't want to be replacing fence panels and posts every year. The site is open for visitors so please do head to Goldstar Fencing & Gates to see what they have to offer. Alternatively, you can find them online at www. goldstarfencingandgates.co.uk as well as on Facebook. Should you have any queries or like any further details please call 01986 892810 or email: info@goldstarfencing andgates.co.uk.

Halesworth Library

Libraries are catching up! for these in the library and on our website and social media pages. Along with events getting back to some sort of normality, we've also reintroduced our newspapers and there is now no need to pre-book one of our three computers. Our refurbished public toilets are also open and we resumed our normal opening times in July. For your information, as it's been some time, here are the library opening times. Monday: 9:30am-12pm Tuesday: 9:30am-5:30pm Wednesday: 9:30am-5:30pm Thursday: Closed Friday: 9:30am-6pm Saturday: 9:30am-5pm Sunday: 10am-3pm We continue to endeavour to keep all our library users and staff safe and would ask visitors to continue wearing a face mask. Hand gel is available for your use and visitor numbers will remain at a comfortable level for the

foreseeable future. On a final note, our current Library Manager, Julie Gulliver, will be leaving us at the end of August after two busy but rewarding years. Julie said: "Despite the challenges of lockdown, working at Halesworth Library has given me some of the most rewarding times in my career. I've met some lovely people in the community, which is such a special place and have made some lasting friends. Some of you may remember I signed up to do a skydive prior to lockdown and this will still be going ahead on Sunday 26th September. Please visit: www.goldengiving. com/f/julieskydive if you'd like to contribute to raising funds for Suffolk Libraries. Thank you to everyone in Halesworth who makes the library such an amazing asset for all." All the staff look forward to welcoming customers old and new over the coming months.

Hello everyone, we at the Leiston Good Neighbour Scheme hope you've all had a good summer, and have been able to get out and about more and meet with friends and family. We're able to start our normal service again now, which is exciting. This includes visiting people who are lonely at home or meeting up somewhere for a chat, helping to fill in forms, going with people to social activities and one-off help with problems at home such as tidying a garden or changing a lightbulb. Clean but worn clothing and bed linen is accepted too for recycling, please mark the bags 'recycling' Any donations of suitable items of gifts, tins and bottles for our tombola's would be much appreciated. We also have the Ichameleon 'pop up' shop 16th-22nd September, selling a variety of goods with a tombola on Wednesday and a cake stall on Friday. Donations will be most welcome. Monday, 20th September at 7.30pm on Zoom The next meeting of the AVSFHG will be held online on Monday 20th September at 7:30pm when we'll host a speaker from Martlesham Aviation Museum. The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) came into being on March 13th, 1912. Martlesham Heath Airfield was opened in January 1917 to become the premier national centre for the testing and evaluation of aircraft and armaments, only nine years after the first recorded flight of a heavier-than-air machine in Britain. That October, the operations at Martlesham Heath were given the name "The Aeroplane Experimental Unit, Royal Flying Corps", and it's been described as "The Cradle of British Aviation". On 1st April 1918, the RFC was merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to become the Royal Air Force, the oldest independent air force in the world. In 1936, radar research and development (R&D) commenced at nearby Bawdsey Manor, and aircraft from Martlesham were available to assist when necessary, taking part in the first successful radar detection of ships

If you're interested in volunteering in Dee's Den, please leave your name and contact details in the shop. We were very disappointed that fifteen bags of dirty and unsaleable items were left on the doorstep recently, which meant we were overwhelmed, and we couldn't take any more donations that day! The person who did that should be ashamed that someone had to work their way through the rubbish you left. Please can I ask again, DO NOT leave bags or goods at the door when we are closed. Thank you, Nikki.

We hope you're all having a lovely summer and enjoying some time spent with family during the school holidays. We've been delighted to see more children in the library enjoying crafts and taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Almost one hundred children have already signed up which, although is less than we had before lockdown, is still absolutely fantastic. There is time to sign up if you haven't already, so do pop along to the library and grab some books and goodies. We hope children taking part remotely are enjoying their books too. For those of you looking for online activities take a look at the Suffolk Library website for an up-to-date list on all the remote free learning opportunities and activities you can access. Armstrong Whitworth Ensign Airliner. At Martlesham 1939 for testing and evaluation from the air - and also fortuitously of other aircraft taking off from HMS Courageous. Three days before the outbreak of the second world war, the establishment was moved away to Wiltshire, and the station became part of 11 Group, which bore the brunt of the Battle of Britain. Douglas Bader and Bob Stanford Tuck were separately stationed at Martlesham during 1940. In the Spring of 1943, the 356th Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Force arrived, to escort USAAF Eighth Air Force heavy bombers on daylight raids over Europe. RAF 56 Squadron remained to attack targets in France and the Low Countries, as well as shipping in the North Sea, which made Martlesham Heath one of very few joint Anglo-American airfields.

After the war, it reverted once more to an R&D role, until that was relocated to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough and Bedford. With the jet-engine era, the concrete ends of the runway had been extended to avoid the tarmac melting. Then, from 1958 to 1961, the "Battle of Britain Flight" was at the airfield, which was finally closed on 25th April 1963. This Zoom-based event is free to members, but is also available to non-members at a cost of £3. If you wish to 'attend', please register via our website and you'll be sent joining instructions. We look forward to welcoming you on the night. For more info, see our website https://avsfhg.org.uk/events/ or phone Angela Skelcher on 01728 830949.

News from The Halesworth Bookshop We're excited to announce that we'll be in the Pavilion at the Mini Low House LitFest 2021 which will be held on Sunday 22nd August from 11am-6pm. Featuring: Camila Balshaw, Lesley Dolphin, Ester Freud, Charlie Haylock, Wendy Holden, Lesley Kara, Jenni Keer, Richard Mabey, Phoebe Morgan, Rob Nisbet, Paddy O'Connell, Victoria Panton Bacon and Gaby Wood. Entry is free, for a full programme visit: www. lowhouselaxfield.com A morning with Annie Garthwaite, author of the recently published historical novel Cecily, Saturday 18th Sept at 11am, followed by an opportunity to purchase signed copies at £14.99. Cecily Neville (the protagonist in Annie Garthwaite's debut novel) was born in the year of

Agincourt, lived into the early years of the Tudors, created a dynasty, mothered two kings (Edward 1V and Richard 111) and led her family through civil war. For most of her life she was one of the most powerful women in England. Reading from her novel, Annie will reveal Cecily in all her complex glory... A dynastic schemer and a political mover and shaker of the first rank, a strategist, politician and administrator par excellence, but also, a wife and mother, who loved fiercely, lost children in infancy and to war and, one fateful day in Ludlow, faced down an army alone. The event will take place at The Halesworth Bookshop all part of Heritage week. For more information, contact the Halesworth Bookshop on 01986 873840.

Woodbridge Art Club (WAC) has over one hundred members and they don't all use paint and brushes! This month, I'd like to highlight the work WAC member Roy Eaton creates using coloured pencils. Retired Engineer Roy enjoyed art at school but only took up painting years later when he attended art classes. At one of these classes, Roy was introduced to working in high-quality coloured pencils and he hasn't looked back since. Sharpened, and used on quality paper, coloured pencils enable

is in trouble)? Can your plans benefit from the use of a Trust or Settlement (in the case of a son's unstable marriage, possibly yes)? Taking professional advice and reviewing your plans could save tax. Even if the downsides outweigh the predicted benefits, at least you'll have made an educated decision from the facts rather than always wondering whether you could have done something giving you piece of mind. And how much is that worth? Hope this helps. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) by emailing: robin.beadle@ensors.co.uk.

rather than leaving the property via your Will? Or perhaps, if you're considering retiring from your business, what are the effects of bringing that forward (perhaps with a Management Buy Out rather than with an arm's length sale at some point in the future)? Accelerating a disposal can have effects beyond taking a smaller tax charge now over a larger predicted one later, however. Making a gift of an asset but continuing to enjoy using it needs to be structured carefully to avoid anti-avoidance rules. If you're gifting an asset, do you have the cash available to settle any CGT due? If you dispose of an income-producing asset, how will it affect your longer-term income requirements? Is the recipient of the gift financially stable enough to receive the asset (for example, you should probably think carefully before gifting your son a property if his marriage

Predicting what the government will do in the next Budget is nigh on impossible, but one thing is certain: the government has spent an eye-watering amount of money over the pandemic and it must be paid back somehow. Currently, we're in a very low capital tax environment and capital taxes are unlikely to go any lower. Furthermore, even before the pandemic hit, the Government had been reviewing capital taxation (both capital gains tax (CGT) and inheritance tax (IHT)) and had been looking at the amount of revenue raised. The question then becomes: Can you take advantage of the current low-tax environment before tax rates (as is widely expected) increase? For example: If your long-term plans are to leave your second home to your children, have you explored the implications of doing this during your lifetime by gift

New Iveco transporter joins the Hammond's fleet It was way back in 1962 when A W & D Hammond was formed. From day one, we attended stranded motorists that were broken down, or if they were unfortunate enough to have been involved in a road traffic accident. In fact, Roy Hammond regularly used to attend breakdowns on his Triumph Tiger motorcycle with a handful of tools. In those long past days, if you had a hammer and a couple of screwdrivers, you could fix most things! The most frequently attended breakdown hot-spot was at the AA roadside point on the A12 at Blythburgh, where motorists usually limped to, in order to look for help. Obviously, things have moved on considerably in the intervening years and now a technician will need a laptop diagnostic kit to stand any chance of a repair and many stranded vehicles now have to be transported to an authorised franchise workshop.

Over the years, Hammonds have built up a substantial vehicle breakdown and recovery fleet which travels all over the UK and remains open 365 days of the year and 24 hours a day. The vehicle pictured is the latest new transporter to join the fleet. A new Iveco 15-ton unit with an ultra-low demountable body fitted. However low your spoiler is, this vehicle can recover it damage free. Tim Warne, Recovery and Compliance Manager, with 37 years' experience with Hammonds, said: "We're extremely pleased to add this vehicle to our fleet. It's designed to transport two vehicles at a time and the high payload means that the longest and heaviest vans are recovered with ease." This top specification vehicle is fully 'London low emission zone compliant' and has a 360-degree camera set up for full all-round vision.

The eagerly awaited new James Bond film 'No Time to Die' is finally coming to the big screen and will be showing at Leiston Film Theatre from the UK release date of Thursday 30th September. The 25th instalment in the Bond franchise, marks Daniel Craig's final appearance as British Secret Service Agent, 007 and also stars Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) as the new Bond Villain, Safin, one who really gets under Bond's skin. The film was originally due to arrive in cinemas in April 2020 and has been moved several times, due to the pandemic, leaving film fans frustrated. But now, Bond is back and it certainly looks as if No Time to Die is going to be a 'must-see' cinematic event. The film's thrilling trailer has already got cinema-goers excited ahead of its release and the film's theme song, performed by Billie Eilish, won a Best Song Grammy in 2020.

Wrentham Chapel will, once again, be hosting 'Seedtime and Harvest' at 7pm on Friday 17th September. This seasonal celebration of music, spoken word and song gives an optional invitation to those attending to bring along an item to contribute to the evening's programme. Items may be serious, humorous, religious or secular. There will also be an opportunity to socialise over a light buffet with soft drinks and wine.

News from Woodbridge Museum With the relaxation of Covid restrictions, there have been record numbers of visitors to Woodbridge Museum. The unpredictable weather has been no deterrent to visitors but has proved a welcome refuge from the torrential showers. The photo wall is starting to revive memories from people who have lived in Woodbridge all their lives and from others who remember visiting relations as children. These are both personal memories and stories handed down through the generations. The family area is now fully functional with quizzes and activities for children to try. The old school slates have proved very popular with children and, unless we have had some incredibly talented five-year-old artists coming in, parents have been unable to resist having a go themselves.

Choosing the right wall Back on the road again During the recent Olympics, we have seen the most extraordinary feats achieved. For example, 13-year-old Sky Brown won a skateboarding bronze medal. She never had a professional coach but instead watched YouTube videos of skateboarders and tried to recreate their tricks. In the final, she fell twice but had the mental resilience to go on her third run and try the same trick that she had fallen on, and this time succeeded. The athletes remind us of what we're all capable of if we set our hearts on a goal. We all have to know what's right for us as individuals. Reality suggests that very few of us will go on to be skateboarding champions, however good the skate park in town might be! We may set ourselves to be the best we can in our profession, sport, fitness or gardening, and those can be good personal choices. But have we thought about goals that go to the heart of what makes life

worthwhile? I think of one young man who fell in love with a young lady but who knew that, in his own words, he was 'rubbish at relationships.' I offered to meet up with him when he was in the area, and he'd turn up with his notebook, list of questions, even diagrams, and we'd work at it. He'd phone when issues arose and needed working through. Today, he is a fine man, taking responsibility in a marriage that's rich and meaningful. How about making it our goal to be better in whatever role we have that links to relationships? A better boss, employee, father, mother and yes, son or daughter. If married, why shouldn't we set ourselves to be better husbands? As someone put it, 'Don't make the mistake of spending your whole life climbing the ladder only to find that ladder is leaning against the wrong wall.' www.halesworthcommunitychurch.org

in Wenhaston!

Having been rudely interrupted in March 2020, the Workers' Educational Association (WEA) is back with face-to-face learning in Wenhaston Village Hall. We're fortunate to again have the knowledgeable and entertaining Stephen Jeffery-Poulter, this time tutoring on the subject of "An Historic Tour of East Anglia." In his own summary, he says: "From gentlewoman Celia Fiennes accounts of her excursions in the late 17th century, via Daniel Defoe's bestselling book 'Tours Through the Whole Island of Great Britain' in the 1720s, to the enormously popular 20th century 'King's England Guides' of Arthur Mee, this course charts more than 300 years of change in the landscape and settlements of the historic Counties of Suffolk and Norfolk. Using the original observations and recommendations of travellers to this area in the past combined with a wealth of period paintings, antiquarian engravings, vintage postcards and modern photographs, this will be a fascinating and unusual

perspective on the history of East Anglia." The course comprises of seven, two-hour sessions starting at 10am on Friday 1st October. A break for half-term falls on Friday 29th October and the last session will be on Friday 19th November. You can book online at: www.wea. org.uk or by telephoning 0300 303 3464 quoting reference no: C2228380. The cost is £55.30. (For further details, contact: wenhaston.branch@wea.ac.uk or 01502 478977). Founded in 1903, the WEA is a charity dedicated to bringing high-quality, professional education into the heart of communities. With the support of nearly 2,000 volunteers, 2,000 tutors and over 5,200 members, it delivers friendly, accessible and enjoyable courses for adults from all walks of life. No previous knowledge or qualifications are required to join this course. So why not get online or telephone and book your place now to join a friendly band of students. Looking forward to seeing you there!
