WELCOME WELCOME TO SEPTEMBER’S Places&Faces®.

We were delighted when our talented West End reviewer secured tickets to see the new Harry Potter play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, at London’s Palace Theatre recently. Tickets for this magical two-part production are like gold dust and, with the script for the new play also flying off the shelves, the interest in the new show is intense. The play includes performances by Norwich’s Poppy Miller – a former Hewett School pupil and Maddermarket Theatre actress – who plays Harry Potter’s wife, Ginny, with fellow Norfolk actor Sam Clemmett playing Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus Severus (Sam studied on the Norwich Theatre Royal Arts Course). Of course, the play was out of this world, and no doubt any new tickets that are issued will be snapped up in seconds (the show is currently sold out until December next year!). Meanwhile, back to reality and there are all sorts of reasons for going out in Norfolk and Suffolk this month. Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show is always extraordinary and we’re also looking forward to seeing Felicity Montagu (Alan Partridge’s longsuffering secretary Lynn) in this month’s Pride and Prejudice. September sees some fabulous festivals taking place, too, with the line-ups looking bigger and better than ever for the Maritime, Wheels, HighTide, Noirwich Crime Writing, Out There and Porkstock Festivals, as well as the Norfolk Food & Drink events. It’s also time for Heritage Open Days, which runs from Thursday, September 8 to Sunday, September 11 (www.heritageopendays.org.uk). This event brings to life the stories and buildings that make us who we are today and there are simply more activities taking place than we can mention, so take a look at the website or pick up a brochure to find the programme in full. All in all, it’s going to be another magical month – enjoy!

Carolyn Atkins Ps. Congratulations to those who won tickets to the 80s Celebration at Holkham Hall with Level 42 and guests: Mrs Sarah-Jane Tweed from Cringleford, Nigel Turner from Lowestoft and Joanna Goodrum from Acle. Also to Mrs Barbara Fielder from Wymondham who won a Legends of Music Break at Vauxhall Holiday Park – well done!

Carolyn Atkins selects some highlights for September BEST TEAM

We were delighted to have a visit from Beach Radio after Places & Faces was nominated for their best workplace award. The online and digital radio station (103.4 and 97.4FM) broadcast the news and we tucked into some delicious doughnuts from Bushells Bakery – now, that’s what we call a proper prize! Pictured from left to right before the doughnuts were devoured are Coner Murphy, Ashley Coomer, Jane Goodley, Colin Huggins, Andrew Hirst, Shaun Coomer, Diane Green, Carolyn Atkins, Kelly Smith, Donna Titcombe and Justin Neale ( just missing Paula Hodds – we owe you a doughnut, Paula!).

BEST TV PROGRAMME

This month’s top TV programme has got to be Strictly Come Dancing when former shadow chancellor and Norwich City FC chairman Ed Balls will be throwing shapes on the dance floor. Bookies are giving him 66-1, as he’s up against some tough competition, with other celebrities including Will Young, Louise Redknapp, Anastasia and Daisy Lowe also strutting their stuff under the glitter balls.

The bad news is that Norwich Theatre Royal chief executive Peter Wilson will be leaving the city at the end of this year after 25 years and we’re very sorry to see him go. The good news is that his successor, Stephen Crocker, has been appointed and will take up his new role in January. Currently deputy chief executive of The Lowry in Manchester, a major arts venue, 35-year-old Mr Crocker said: “I am hugely excited about the next challenge in my life and about the opportunity to lead one of the country’s leading theatres. I feel really strongly that Norwich and Norfolk are within the top cultural destinations in the country.”

BEST BAKE OFF

OK, so we’re all tuning in to Mary Berry and Co on TV, but here in Norfolk another baking competition is hotting up, with the tenth anniversary of the annual scone competition set to take place at Wroxham Barns on Sunday, September 25. Part of Norfolk Food & Drink Ltd’s celebration of the vibrant local food scene, amateur bakers are invited to submit a plate of scones for tasting by a panel of journalist judges. Last year’s winner, Jacqueline Collier, was proud to see her date and walnut scones go on sale in Wroxham Barn’s tempting cake cabinet, so if you fancy having a go, visit: www.wroxhambarns.co.uk

Get ready for a taste of the Caribbean as Turtle Bay arrives in Norwich. This is the first East Anglian location for this Caribbean restaurant and bar chain, with the 180-seater, £800K, 5,100sq ft restaurant occupying a beautiful, Grade II-listed, former fabric warehouse on Swan Lane, right in the heart of the city’s cosmopolitan Norwich Lanes area. Having opened at the end of August, the new Caribbean-themed restaurant and bar has created over 50 jobs and celebrates the lively, colourful, soulful and delicious experiences that this fabulous part of the world has to offer. mAgIc Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is already a huge hit, with tickets to the two-part West End play selling like lightning and copies of the script flying off the shelves. Our lucky West End reviewer Benet Catty got to see the show

teleportation to the West End stage was announced that the resulting two-part, five-hour marathon would be critic-proof. Even if it was a stinker, it would run for years, such is the all-conquering love for the character and the seven-book, eight-film story about the Hogwarts wizard. The London reviews have ranged from very good to really great and it’s sold out until December 2017, so any readers with a toddler should perhaps plan to take them to it as a treat for their 18th birthday. The first thing to acknowledge is that there is no sense in which Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is trying to short change anyone by simply giving them what they already know and love. This is not a literary jukebox musical. It gives us many (indeed almost all) of the characters people know and love but often reconceived, whether by plot twists, time travel or (in the case of the key protagonists) by now being adults. It gives us new characters, particularly the children of the leads. It gives us magic, but of a theatrical kind, and largely through old fashioned misdirection, quick changes, trap doors and flying. It is able to make jokes about itself without being smug. And the narrative is complex and plot-heavy. “Keep the secrets” we’re told as we leave the theatre, which precludes me from including any plot spoilers - probably just as well as some of the twists and turns went completely over my head. To walk the line between familiarity and originality, particularly when 80 per cent of the adult audience and 100 per cent of the child audience will know every reference, is a

pleasing strength and a mighty achievement. Credit for this goes not just to the lionised J K Rowling but to playwright Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and producer Sonia Friedman - surely the greatest British theatre producer since Cameron Mackintosh emerged on the scene in the 1970s. The first act of Part One is easily the tightest and most theatrically successful. Briskly paced and economically staged, with characters introduced with wit and invention and a few wonderful sleights of hand which really give the sense that we’re in for a good time. The show doesn’t find this pace and interest again until the final 25 minutes of the second play, but the interim is by no means devoid of incident. If anything, there is too much story to get through and too much set-up to explain, which necessitates long passages of successive scenes in which two people stand or sit in a room and discuss what they’re going to do. There’s too much talking about stuff rather than doing it. Other scenes are extraneous because they are just opportunities to display some magic tricks which don’t contribute anything to the plot. The most exciting sequence, in which the villain of the show (I mustn’t tell you who), gets his/her comeuppance is exciting exactly because special effects, story and character completely interlock. What cannot be denied is that the performances across the board are terrific. Jamie Parker’s usual dry delivery finds a perfect match as Harry Potter, now pushing 40, who’s learning how to form a better relationship with his son Albus (Sam Clemmett) while dealing with his memories of losing his parents and what he dealt with as a child. “I wouldn’t have survived Hogwarts” without his friends, he tells someone, “I wouldn’t have survived at all.” Noma Dumezweni is a terrific, down-to-earth Hermione and Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley gets the lion share of the laughs while also being a well-rounded character whose personality has stayed charmingly consistent with his boyhood self. The great achievement throughout the cast is to be consistent with the characterisations of the books and films without just doing impersonations.

WHAT’S ON

west end review

The show is not perfect. The music, by Imogen Heap, is a real dud: an odd mix of synth-pop (complete with drum machines) and irritatingly non-descript advert music. And the usually excellent Steven Hoggett provides some slightly embarrassing and extraneous dance sequences that will surely be cut before the inevitable Broadway transfer. But Mark Henderson lights it with great beauty and Christine Jones’ design is a wonder of economy and spectacle, making a surprisingly simple set design ( just arches and a couple of staircases) seem elaborate. Whether you think Harry Potter is a good show, as I do, or a game-changing experience (as many first time theatregoers will find it) depends on how devoted you are to the source material and on whether you think any show on any subject can be worth £500 for a family of four wanting to see both parts. One of the story’s big themes is about fulfilling high expectations; the production’s great achievement is proving that it is possible to match them if you respect your audience. And that’s where the magic lies. You probably won’t get a seat until your grandchildren are old enough to buy them for you, but when you do it’ll feel much closer to a blessing than a curse.

t

he Rocky Horror Show returns to the Norwich

Theatre Royal this autumn for a week of outrageous fun and entertainment. A top-class cast has been assembled for the show which follows the adventures of Brad and Janet on a journey they will never forget. Former S Club 7 member Paul Cattermole is playing Eddie and Dr Scott, while opposite him stars Steve Punt who takes on the key role of The Narrator. Best-known as one half of comedy duo Punt and Dennis, he has also forged a successful solo career which includes hosting 45 series of The Now Show for Radio 4, and TV appearances on the likes of Mock The Week and Horrible Histories. Meanwhile, the part of Frank N Furter will be played by Liam Tamme, who is best-known for wowing Saturday night BBC TV audiences on The Voice. Liam is also no stranger to the stage, appearing in West End productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Hairspray and Wicked. The once-seen, never forgotten Frank N Furter is just one of many bizarre and extrovert characters featured in the show which has been a huge theatrical hit for decades. Written by Richard O’Brien, the Rocky Horror Show is an affectionate, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the science fiction B-movies of the mid-20th Century. Expect a host of classic songs including Sweet Transvestite, Damn It Janet and the ever-popular Time Warp in this show packed with innuendo, over-the-top antics and plenty of audience participation. Richard O’Brien tells us more…

Box Office: 01603 630000 www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

What has given The Rocky Horror Show such huge appeal?

The fact that it is such light-hearted naughtiness, combined with root fairy tales has a lot to do with its longevity. What made you write something so off the wall, something on the edge of acceptable and therefore open to rejection by the public at large? Were you a rebellious person at this stage? I was always outside mainstream societal rules simply by being transgendered.

Who or what provided inspiration for the characters and storylines that appear in the Rocky Horror Show? All of the characters in the show are archetypal. Were you to search for their inspirations in other tales, the journey would not be a long one. What was happening in your life at the time you wrote The Rocky Horror Show?

I was a recent father of my first child and out of work when I wrote the show. 1972/73 was a moment of change. Glam rock and overt sexuality was around, gay people were coming out and there was a “buzz” in the air. How much input have you had with the various stage productions of The Rocky Horror Show and how has it developed since the original show at The Royal Court? I keep an eye on it.

Why do you think people still get so excited by The Rocky Horror Show? Because it makes you laugh.

How different do you think your life might have been without Rocky?

I have no idea but I would have had a good life because I am made that way. How does it feel at the age of 74 to be the man that inspired a nation to wear fishnets and has Rocky’s influence forced you to grow old disgracefully? Cool.

Whose renditions of the characters in the show did you like the best? Without Tim Curry’s performance, I often wonder whether the show would have taken off in the first place.

After writing such a blockbuster, what’s next in terms of your career and personally?

I am the luckiest person on the planet. I shall be happy as long as I can keep singing. What is the most exciting bit of the new production? The long bit between curtain up and curtain down.

How has the current production evolved from previous productions and why should people go and see it? Because it swings.

felicity montagu the play, too, but there is some trepidation. “I haven’t toured since I was 22 and I’ve never done a tour like this. But my kids say this is going to be really good for me. I need theatre. I really need it and I really enjoy it.” Felicity feels comedy comes from points of reality and the emotions thrown up by the actions of Mrs Bennet, as the foolish and scheming mother hunting for eligible husbands for her troublesome daughters, are not that different to those faced by people today: “It all comes out of pain and feeling uncomfortable. Mrs Bennet is in pursuit of happiness. So she is terribly earnest and eager to please. She has a dilemma as she has all these daughters to marry off. “She is a very different character to Lynn. Mrs Bennet is submissive to Mr Bennet, but she is distressed by that, whereas Lynn accepts her condition. Lynn has lots of locks on her doors and is a little person who will always be browbeaten.” The character of Mrs Mainwaring, which she played in the Dad’s Army movie, was very different again. Coming from an army family, Felicity had lots of personal experience upon which to draw. “Mrs Mainwaring was very capable and had that strength. My father was in the 2nd Punjab Regiment and fought in Burma. My mother was an Aussie and when they met they came to England. There’s an awful lot of humour in the army and it’s very close, like a family. So it was a great backdrop to what I do.” Pride and Prejudice will certainly be a change of gear for her, not least because it will be a treat to get out of Lynn’s sensible shoes and ‘snazzy’ cardigan, although the ‘spinster look’ was all Felicity’s own devising. “A lot of actresses worry about whether they look any good, but I just wanted to create Lynn, so I personally chose a lot of her clothes and that cardi was perfect because it made me look so frumpy. Costumes really do help with a character. I’m surprised I haven’t done more period dramas. I love the way old costumes make you feel and the way you move in them. “But I will be looking for some Lynn bargains in Norwich, so if anyone has anyone has any ideas…”

JOINING FELICITY ON STAGE in Pride and Prejudice is multi-talented and Olivier award-winning actor Matthew Kelly, who wowed Norfolk audiences when he last appeared on the Norwich Theatre Royal stage as a chainsmoking, curmudgeonly factory worker in Toast earlier this year. His many theatre performances include West End appearances as the original Stanley in Funny Peculiar, in Waiting For Godot with Ian McKellan and Roger Rees, in Tim Firth’s play Sign of the Times, the musical Lend Me A Tenor! and as Lennie in the Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s production of Of Mice and Men at the Savoy Theatre where his performance won him the Olivier Award for Best Actor. His television work includes the award-winning thriller Cold Blood, Benidorm, Bleak House, Marple, Casualty and Heartbeat – although he is probably still best known for presenting You Bet! and Stars in their Eyes. Mr Darcy will be played by Benjamin Dilloway (Of Mice and Men: Birmingham Rep, The Silver Tassie: National Theatre, and If You Don’t Let Us Dream, We Won’t Let You Sleep: Royal Court), with Tafline Steen (who made her professional stage debut in King Charles III at the Almeida and reprised the role in the West End and on Broadway) taking the role of Elizabeth Bennet.

GREAT YARMOUTH’S MARITIME FESTIVAL

ARTHUR HOWELL WWW.ARTHURHOWELL.COM

Ships of all shapes, sizes and ages will sail into Great Yarmouth this month for the annual Maritime Festival. This major event, now in its 17th year, attracts 30,000 visitors to soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the port’s seafaring past, present and future. They can board the vintage sailing ship Earl of Pembroke, which has starred in more than a dozen films and TV series including Hornblower and Treasure Island. Popular pleasure boat Regal Lady is also making a homecoming to the port where she was built in the 1930s to give fun rides to trippers. Visitors can savour Great Yarmouth’s herring fishery heydays on the Lydia Eva drifter which is now a floating museum in the port. There will also be the chance to tour a brand new, 83m-long offshore Service Operation Vessel owned by Danish shipping company Esvagt, fresh from its naming ceremony on the Friday (pre-book tours at the eTicket section at: www.maritime-festival.co.uk). The free-entry festival, on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11, also features jet ski demonstrations in the river, visiting vintage vessels and current and historic lifeboats. Military re-enactors will mingle among the crowds, and there will be shanty and folk singers and street entertainers along with traditional crafts. Quayside barbecues will cook herring – the fish which made Great Yarmouth famous before it became a tourist resort. The festival, which aims to showcase the town’s seafaring history, is staged by the Greater Yarmouth Tourism and Business Improvement District.

OUT THERE

Weird and wonderful, outrageous and outstanding - the Out There Festival brings some of the world’s finest circus and street arts performers to Great Yarmouth. This year’s eagerly-awaited Out There: International Festival of Circus and Street Arts returns to the popular seaside town on Friday, September 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18. This year we’re working in partnership with the Tourism Authority to drive many more visitors to the festival and enhance the town’s visitor economy. I’m really thrilled that, in addition to all our usual activity around St George’s Park and in the town, we have been able to expand on to the seafront with some brilliant large scale spectaculars.” For full details of this year’s packed programme go to: www.outtherefestival.com - most of it is completely free!

Become a heritage detective this September, advises Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich VISITNORWICH, www.visitnorwich.co.uk

Most people love a good story – true or otherwise, it

doesn’t matter; a great story captivates the imagination and fires our enthusiasm for life. In 2012 Norwich gained UNESCO World City of Literature status (the first English city to do so). A much coveted accolade, Norwich joined the world literary stage to shout: “we know a thing or two about writing”, and whilst we celebrate local writers such as Julian of Norwich, Anna Sewell, Thomas Paine, Harriet Martineau and many others, we also celebrate the fact that many buildings related to these characters have their own stories, too. Born from this special City of Literature status, VisitNorwich, with funding from the Norwich Business Improvement District (Norwich BID), cited Norwich in 2014 as the ‘City of Stories’ to attract new visitors and to change the perceptions of those with their own ideas of what the city has to offer. In 2016 VisitNorwich re-launched its blog www.cityofstories.co.uk to uncover and share the city’s secrets and hidden gems, history, people, creativity and culture that resonate so powerfully with the people who live and work here. The blog is a work in progress, building stories as much about contemporary Norwich as historic Norwich. Which brings us to Heritage Open Days (HODs): an annual, free, four-day smorgasbord of stories, architecture, people and places. We cannot get enough of it. Visitors and locals alike descend on the city and the county in their droves viewing buildings they may have known for decades, invading places to which they’ve never had access before, passionately and hungrily engaging with history and people, while learning, observing and absorbing. This year’s Heritage Open Days festival kicks off on Thursday, September 8 and runs to Sunday, September 11. HODs is England’s biggest heritage festival celebrating fantastic history, architecture and culture. This year’s Norfolk festival (HODS runs nationally) already has over 220 events registered… and it keeps growing. And in 2016, its twelfth year, the team at The Forum in Norwich has taken on the role of co-ordinating it with the programme managed centrally by the National Trust.

28

So what’s in store? It’s not just about meandering through buildings; this imaginative scheme includes all sorts of celebratory fringe events such as talks, workshops, walks, music and family activities. Some are drop-in events and others must be pre-booked, so grab a brochure or take a look at the website, www.heritageopendays.org.uk, and get planning as early as possible. New events are always welcome and this year is no exception. The wonderful historic market town of Wymondham is going all-out with the whole town stepping back in time. There will be vintage bus rides, proper tea and cake on authentic china, clothing and antiques stalls, music and collectors’ items, archives to pour over, old-fashioned games and loads more. Discover all this from 10am to 6pm on Sunday, September 11. Another newcomer is the History Mystery Heritage Hunt: an interactive voyage of discovery around Norwich using mobile devices, so put your puzzle-solving skills to the test. This fascinating walk will take around an hour and is self-guided. If you love architecture, then the opening of Boardman House is perfect (this is a pre-booked event). This Victorian Sunday School building – transformed by the work of Hudson Architects – re-opened in 2015 following a substantial refurbishment, and is now used by the Norwich University of the Arts to house various schools. Led by Jenny Harvey of Hudson Architects, tours will take place focusing on its history. Finally, the last city newcomer – City Book Shop: More Than a Century of Style Exhibition. A stunning collection of Norwich shawls, antique costumes from the 1800s and more will be on show from the members of the Costume and Textile Association. Helen Hoyte MBE, author of The History of the Norwich Shawls will also be there to speak to visitors. This takes place from Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Whatever type of event you participate in, whether discovering Norwich’s churches and places of worship (there are more than you can imagine), exploring historic buildings, theatres, restaurants and public buildings or enjoying music and exhibitions, make sure you do something each day. You certainly won’t regret it and it’s a perfect opportunity to get together with like-minded friends with no costs involved other than maybe lunch and a drink! This is an incredibly vibrant, sharing and sociable festival and, you never know, it may lead to a brand new interest – something you can do all year round.

As another batch of kitchen whizzes whips the nation into a frenzy on the Great British Bake Off, we look at the popular TV programme’s meteoric rise

he Bake Off is back on our screens, with Britain’s most-watched show of 2015 set to be another resounding success. The programme’s producers have got the recipe just right; the first series of the popular cookery competition was broadcast on BBC Two in 2010 with over three million viewers at its height, while last October’s final on BBC One attracted more than 15 million viewers. Queen of the kitchen, Mary Berry, and bread-maker extraordinaire, Paul Hollywood, have once again teamed up with their comedy sidekicks Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc to put the latest batch of contestants through their paces.

WORDS: CAROLYN ATKINS / KEELEY BOLGER

And as we saw when the seventh series began on Wednesday, August 24, this year’s contestants – Louise, Val, Tom, Rav, Michael, Benjamina, Selasi, Jane, Lee, Andrew and Candice – have been joined by Kate Barmby, 37, from Brooke in Norfolk, a farmer’s daughter and mother of two who works as a nurse at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (good luck Kate!).

30

Professionals Mary and Paul are once again putting the dozen amateur bakers through their paces, with 10 weeks altogether of technical and signature bakes and impressive, sugary showstoppers, and new challenges this year including batter and botanical weeks. Filmed in a huge tent in Welford Park in Berkshire, today’s BAFTA Award-winning Great British Bake Off has a phenomenal following, with the winner of last year’s show, Nadiya Hussain, going on to dizzy heights, baking a 90th birthday cake for the Queen, and securing a two-part cookery series of her own called The Chronicles of Nadiya. Other stars of the show include squirrels and ducks, with closeups of these and other creatures punctuating the programme, while

many of us will remember the Bake Off scandal when disillusioned dessert-maker Iain Watters threw his Baked Alaska in the bin! There’s always something to talk about and with one contestant eliminated every week and the tantalising fame and fortune that comes with the GBBO crown, this is no time for burnt offerings and soggy bottoms. As Mary, Paul and Co get busy judging the cook-offs, counties across the country are clamouring to claim their Bake Off connections. East Anglia can proudly boast more than most, however, as Paul, Mel and Sue have all appeared live on stage in the area in the past few years and Sue Perkins will be back at the Norwich Theatre Royal with her Live! In Spectacles show on Sunday, September 4 (Box Office: 01603 630000; www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk). This is the first date in a 14-city countrywide tour for the much-loved comedian and presenter and includes a user’s guide to Mary Berry (!) and the very best bits from her memoir Spectacles. Ticket prices include a copy of Sue’s book, and the comedian will be signing copies after the show. As many viewers will remember, Mary Berry also made an emotional trip to Norfolk in 2014 when filming for the BBC One series Who Do You Think You Are? when she discovered that her great-great grandfather on her grandmother’s side, Robert Houghton, was, in fact, a baker with a business on Ber Street in Norwich. She was also back in the city in March this year, when she signed copies of her Foolproof Cooking recipe book at Jarrolds, generating a queue of hundreds of fellow cookery fans in the streets outside the store. So we’re excited to find out more from Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood about the Great British Bake Off and what it’s like to be back… 32

| SEPTEMBER 2016

Mary Berry is convinced her fellow Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood’s steely glare “puts the fear of God” into contestants. For a fortunate few, the icy gaze is a decoy, followed by a grin and a wave of praise for the goodies in front of him. More often than not, though, it’s the prelude to his takedown of the bake. But underneath the grizzly image lies an ever so slightly soft centre. “No one chastises themselves more than the contestants,” says 50-year-old Hollywood, casting out an unblinking look. “They get really down about it. Nadiya [Hussain, last year’s winner] recently said she got upset about one of her bakes, and I’d whispered to her: ‘It’s only a baking show, it doesn’t matter’. “I’ve done that this year as well. The big, horrible person that I am, what you don’t see is I’ll go and have a word with them quietly.”

There are no shortcuts to curry favour though.

But with millions of viewers tuning in to see Hussain crowned winner of last year’s series, a reported 19 per cent increase in the number of people baking (according to Waitrose), and cooking essentials flying off the shelves as each episode’s credits roll, clearly the Bake Off is more than just your average TV competition.

“The contestants always look at what recipes both of us have done, because they think it will favour them in the judging,” says Berry resolutely. “But it doesn’t.”

Now back on BBC One for a seventh series, both judges feel this year’s contestants are more nervous than ever.

“The first challenge we did, the first thing out of Mary’s mouth was: ‘Nice crack’,” recalls Wallasey-born Hollywood, creasing up. “That set the tone. It was hilarious.”

“They were slower to settle down this time, because all the people that enter have watched the previous years,” explains 81-year-old Berry. And if it doesn’t look like the contestants are feeling the pressure, her co-judge is only too happy to help. “About three or four programmes in, I played the theme music for Bake Off on my phone,” he says with a chuckle. “So as they walk in the tent, I play it and it freaks them out. It suddenly dawns on them where they actually are!” 34

Jittery as the bakers are, comedy is once again in ready supply, courtesy of in-tent hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc’s rapidfire innuendos.

“I have real trouble,” adds Berry. “This goes on the whole time. I try and gather them up but all three encourage each other. I try to keep them all level and say, ‘Come on, let’s get on with the job’.” Neither host seems distracted by all the tempting treats lying around the tent, either. “No training, no gym, no anything,” notes Berry. “I walk, I play tennis and I do watch what I eat. I eat all the things that I love and cake is very important to me, but it’s size of the slice.”

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

great british bake off

“I’ve never been on a diet,” says Hollywood, with a scornful shake of his head when the word is mentioned. “I’ve never said I’ve been on a diet, never been on a diet, never will go on a diet. I’ve been training because I race cars now, so I’ve been doing a lot of weightlifting and boxing.” Much is made of the almost mother-son relationship between the Bath-born grandmother and the father-of-one, helped in no small part by the latter’s admission that Berry has been known to iron his shirts during the series. Like family, the two are quick to poke fun at one another. “I was walking through Naples recently,” begins Hollywood, who’s married to cookery author Alex. “As you do,” clucks Berry with a wink under her heavy black eyelashes. “...And some woman came up to me and started babbling on in Italian. I was like, ‘English?’ “Then she said in broken English, ‘Bake Off very good!’” “Are you sure you were walking through Naples and not driving around in a posh car?” quips the glamorous octogenarian. Hollywood’s teenage son Josh, keen baker though he is, is less impressed by the series. “He comes along to Bake Off every year, threatened with no pocket money for 10 years if he says anything [at school about the winner],” Paul Hollywood says. “A lot of people want to talk to him about Bake Off, but he just says: ‘No, not interested’.” And when it comes to seeing his dad at work, his son isn’t always enthusiastic either. “’Oh I’m going to Bake Off [again]’,” says Hollywood, adopting a bored tone. “It’s funny the way kids react.” At home, Mary Berry’s grandchildren are all keen bakers, and

their famous grandmother is often recognised and approached in bakeries, shops and even on a recent holiday to the Canary Islands. Her snappy dress sense has been widely emulated, with both Zara and M&S selling out of the bomber jackets she’s sported on screen. Though she’s “busier than ever”, she’s keen her life remains normal and neatly turns down the suggestion of a live road show. “Leave my family and go off on the road? No thank you,” she says crisply. “I love the BBC Good Food show, when the two of us are on that stage live; it’s tremendous and we have enormous fun, but that’s a one-off as far as I’m concerned. “It’s a great strain being away from home. Going to Bake Off is like joining the family.”

Mary Berry is convinced her fellow Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood’s steely glare “puts the fear of God” into contestants.

DiNneR wITh a diFfErence Host a dinner party for friends and family this October to raise money for animal conservation

Photo SALMON ROULADE by THE GREAT HOUSE, LAVENHAM

As the summer departs and

the big freeze begins to set in, many of us want to get together with friends and family before hibernating over Christmas. Now the Zoological Society of East Anglia (known as “ZSEA” and pronounced “ZEE”) has created an event called A Dinner Party for ZSEA that will encourage people from across Norfolk and Suffolk to get together with friends in order to raise money for animal conservation. The idea is a simple one – hosting a dinner party for friends and family in exchange for a charitable donation. The Society provides a fundraising pack to those who want to sign up which includes an array of recipes from top local chefs, a guide on hosting your party, fun games and place cards, along with some information about the charity. The Society’s aim is that everyone hosts their friends on the same weekend – Friday October, 14 to Sunday, October 16 – so that

they can celebrate together at about the same time as many animals start to head off towards hibernation and when our landscape is busy showing off its autumn glory. Recipes have been prepared by an eclectic mix of regional chefs, such as Fran Hartshorne, head chef at The White Horse, Brancaster, Chris Coubrough from Flying Kiwi Inns and Regis Crepy from The Great House Hotel and Restaurant in Lavenham. The variety of suggested menus available matches almost all cooking abilities – and there is no reason that you couldn’t just cook your own signature dish anyway. The event has its own website, www.dinnerparty.org.uk, where participants can sign up to receive their free fundraising pack through the post. Michael Kitching, head of fundraising for the Society said: “I hope that local people will get behind the campaign. The

Zoological Society is one of Norfolk’s special secrets, working and funding work all over the world to help protect wildlife and the environment.” “As a Society we are now in our fourth year of operation. Funding we have provided has led to breakthroughs such as specially protected areas for Snow Leopards in Mongolia and the breeding of critically endangered vultures and tigers. We also provide expertise around the world, with our conservation staff regularly involved in work both in the UK and overseas.” “By hosting a dinner party with friends, participants will be making a personal and direct impact on some of the world’s most endangered species.”

Pot-roasted pheasant with sauerkraut and cider SERVES ONE

This is a great and simple dish that

really shows off the fab flavour of pheasant, which is a great bird to serve at this time of year! In my house, having a pheasant dish on the table really signifies the end of the summer and the beginning of autumn which, I have to say, is my favourite season of all. But, as you may know, pheasant is not known for being the moistest of birds in the world, so this recipe is aimed at retaining the moisture while the sweet cider and saltiness of the sauerkraut make this a real winner. Plus, it’s also a onepot wonder! So you can make this and then enjoy a glass of wine while everyone thinks you are busy in the kitchen getting dinner ready – that’s a win-win in my book!

1 oven-ready pheasant 500g jar of sauerkraut 750ml bottle of cider 10 new potatoes, washed and cut into quarters 3 large carrots, washed and unpeeled, cut into wedges 8 small turnips, washed, peeled and trimmed 8 small onions, peeled and sliced in half 2 Cox apples, cores removed and cut into quarters 1 bay leaf Few sprigs of thyme Salt and pepper

Richard Bainbridge is the chef proprietor of Benedicts Restaurant in Norwich www.restaurantbenedicts.com 01603 926080

METHOD 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C. 2. Open and strain the sauerkraut, then place this in the bottom of a heavy-based roasting pot. 3. Season the pheasant all over with salt and pepper and then place this on top of the sauerkraut. 4. Arrange all of the other vegetables around the pheasant. 5. Pour the cider over the pheasant and then add the thyme and bay leaf. 6. Cover with the lid or, if you are like every other kitchen in the country and you have lost the lid, cover the pot with some tin foil! 7. Place the pot on top of the stove on a high heat and bring it to the boil. 8. Once boiling, place the pot in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the pheasant is just a little under-cooked. 9. At this point, remove the pot from the oven and allow the dish to cool and rest for 10 to 20 minutes before serving. Nb. I like to serve this dish in the middle of the table and let everyone dig in. Great things to serve with this seasonal main course include roasted sprouts and bread sauce.

Little Dishy Simon Wainwright, executive head chef

of The Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth, creates a lovely fish dish for September

Wine Notes NICK MOBBS, director and wine expert at the Imperial Hotel, says:

Single Vineyard, Semillon, Fairfield Block, Clare Valley, Australia Tim Adams founded his company in 1987 with the purchase of his winery in the Clare Valley in South Australia and named it Tim Adams Wines. The first grapes were crushed on site the following year and since then his wines have gone from strength to strength thanks to years of hard work, passion and curiosity. The result is a progressive, family winery that is committed to creating elegant wines with a worldwide reputation for fine wine.

The Semillon is a wonderful grape that we hardly ever drink unless it is in a blend. As a single variety it has wonderful flavours that really work well with the sea bass and the flavours of the smoked salmon. The wine is made by crushing the grapes and then the juice is left in contact with the skins for 12 hours to maximise the fruit flavour and extraction. The fermentation is in a mixture of stainless steel and French oak barrels. The wine is aromatic with balance and a generous flavour typical of this Clare Valley variety. Fermentation in the oak adds complexity to the grassy and stone fruit characters of the Semillon and this is a wine which you can enjoy today but which can also be cellared for a decade with confidence to age and evolve with grace.

GRILLED FILLET OF SEA BASS

SMOKED SALMON AND SPRING ONION MASH

WITH

METHOD First make your mash: Peel the potatoes and place them into a saucepan of cold, salted water. Bring the potatoes to the boil and simmer until soft. Once cooked, drain well and mash with the 2oz butter, salt, pepper and a little nutmeg. Place on the side and keep warm. Cut a cross into each of your tomatoes and place them into a pan of boiling water for 10 seconds, then refresh them in ice cold water, remove the skin and seeds and cut them into small dice. Then make the sauce: Place the egg yolks in a bowl over a pan of gently simmering water and add the mustard and white wine vinegar. Whisk together well and gradually add small splashes of melted butter to the bowl, whisking well all the time. Once all the butter is incorporated you should have a smooth, thickened sauce; now add the chopped chives and tomatoes to the sauce. For the sea bass: Grill the sea bass fillets skin-side up on a lightly oiled tray for four to five minutes until the skin is crisp and the fish is cooked. Meanwhile, finish the mash by stirring in the chopped spring onions and shredded smoked salmon. To serve: Place the sauce in the centre of the plate, put a spoon of mash on the side and the crispy fish on top, then garnish with a rosette of salmon and some pea shoots before serving.

ArRIVING IN STYLE Make an entrance at your wedding with one of these eye-catching vehicles from Vintage VW Experience

n your wedding day, it goes without

saying that you want to look your best and to ensure that your surroundings are equally as stylish. That sentiment extends to the wedding cars, too, as the bride and groom can expect to be photographed from the moment they leave the house and so it’s important to make a great impression from the outset. At The Vintage VW Experience in Swainsthorpe, located close to Dunston Hall in Norwich, Michael Flynn has three fabulous VW vehicles – Ruby, Bessie and Lottie – that will add both style and pizzazz to your day. Ruby is a gorgeous, split-screen, 1967, deep purple campervan; Bessie is a powder blue, bay screen, 1972 campervan; and Lottie is a lovely, silver, 1979 Karmann Beetle convertible. All three are available to hire, whether separately or together, with weddings the company’s speciality. The vehicles are kept in tip top, gleaming condition and the bespoke interiors are beautiful, with silk flowers, cushions, ribbons and bunting all adding to the sense of occasion. Michael Flynn said: “They’re unique, classic vehicles. They appeal to such a wide range of people and they just add that little bit of vintage style to an occasion. They make a lovely backdrop for wedding photographs and it’s always nice to get a close-up of the bride and groom in the van itself. The Vintage VW Experience has been in business for the last three years and the attractive vintage vehicles are proving very popular, with Saturdays (the prime day for weddings) always extremely busy. Booking well ahead is therefore advised and 2016 prices are offered on all the vehicles if booked by the end of this year, even if the wedding itself is well into next year. Ruby, Bessie and Lottie all make attractive backdrops for wedding photographs and have also been used for product launches and photoshoots. The vehicles are chauffeur driven and are most popular for picking up the bride and her accompanying parent, but have also been used to transport the bride and bridesmaids, just the

64

bridesmaids, or the groom and the groomsmen to the church or other ceremony venue and then on to the reception venue. The two campervans can both seat up to six people, and Ruby, Bessie and Lottie have travelled to an array of fabulous East Anglian wedding venues such as The Assembly House and Drayton Old Lodge in Norwich, The Boathouse in Ormesby Broad, Bruisyard Hall near Saxmundham in Suffolk, and historic Hanse House on King’s Lynn’s South Quay. Comments from customers are always incredibly enthusiastic. Sandra Clark, mother of the bride Gemma Clark, who held her wedding at Hanse House in King’s Lynn in August, said: “Thoroughly enjoyed the drive into King’s Lynn in Ruby yesterday! She was beautifully presented and full of character. Thanks for staying on so long at the venue and making such a valuable contribution to the day.” Wedding parties usually pay for a standard four-hour hire allocation, with prices from £390 for Ruby, £360 for Bessie and £270 for Lottie, and a discount given if two or more vehicles are hired. The vehicles are serviced on site (there’s a dedicated campervan workshop) and customers are very welcome to come and see the vehicles first-hand at the company’s base in Swainsthorpe, so that all the finer details - such as the bride’s own flowers and ribbons, if required - can also be arranged. Michael Flynn said: “Ruby is the star of the show. When we’re at wedding shows, you see people lock eyes on Ruby and then they will literally run towards her!” As he explains, purple has been a popular accessory colour for many years, and all three of these lovely vintage vehicles can only add to the sense of occasion and style.

wonderful winter

weddings

Summer weddings have always been big business, with demand constantly outstripping supply for the most popular high season dates. However, the good news is that weddings can be wonderful in autumn and winter, too, particularly when plenty of thought has been put into the planning process. The weather may not be on your side, but if you plan ahead for a rainy, cold day – even snow – as well as remembering that it’ll be dark much earlier on, you can make the most of the winter weather to ensure that you, and your guests, all have a fabulous time. Deanna Auker, PR manager for Great Yarmouth Racecourse, said: “Winter weddings are becoming more popular and are deemed quite magical, especially if you get a snowfall. Apparently, December is now the number three wedding month for brides [presumably after July and August] and winter weddings provide the perfect opportunity to put a luxury spin on wintry comfort foods; big, hearty dishes, indulgent chocolate puddings and mulled wines.” Set within vast grounds, Great Yarmouth Racecourse is licensed for wedding ceremonies, civil ceremonies, civil partnerships and vow renewals. There are facilities for small, intimate events and for large events for up to 240 guests, with a dedicated wedding co-ordinator on hand to help make the day special.

The Racecourse benefits from plenty of parking and plenty of space, allowing guests to arrive by helicopter if they wish to, or to have fireworks in the evening (again, a great option on a dark, winter night). Deanna added: “We do have some requests for winter weddings, but we would certainly invite more; we do have more flexibility with our availability when we are not racing, although we do welcome people to have their wedding on a raceday should they wish to.” Of course, holding a wedding out of the traditional season is also an opportunity to indulge in a fabulous winter wedding dress. As Deanna says: “Winter wedding dress and attire also allow for long sleeves and faux fur stoles, long gloves and hats.” Robert Bennett, one of the owners of Tinkerbelle Bridalwear in Lowestoft said: “At Tinkerbelle you will find a wide range of beautiful bridal gowns suitable for a winter wedding. Some of the gowns have sleeves, covered shoulders and straps, but often these can be added to other dresses. As the talented team at Tinkerbelle design and make bridal gowns, they are able to customise a dress to a bride’s requirements. Bolero jackets, shrugs and wraps are also available to keep out the winter chill as well as full-length coats and cloaks.” Winter weddings are also in demand at The Assembly House in Norwich, an elegant, Grade I-listed Georgian building in the heart of the city. House manager Georgina Postlethwaite said: “These are very popular, December in particular. The House looks magical at Christmas, with the bespoke Christmas trees, both inside the House and on the lawn in the courtyard, along with the fairy lights etching out the Georgian features of the House. On several occasions I have met couples who have come in thinking they

would like a summer wedding and then they have seen the amazing photos of Christmas weddings which couples have shared with us and have changed their minds and booked a December date!” The Assembly House, along with many other local venues, is happy to offer a discount for winter weddings, with deals available in November and January. It’s also worth remembering that if you can get married on a weekday or Sunday, rather than a Saturday, special deals are often available, too. Winter weddings are also popular with couples celebrating their second marriage, who may have opted for a summer wedding first time round. Some winter weddings are themed – with mulled wine and Christmas carols, for example – and they also provide the opportunity to arrive in style, such as in a vintage campervan (see www.vintagevwexperience.co.uk) rather than an open-top vehicle. Michael Flynn, who owns The Vintage VW Experience, said: “Surprisingly, winter weather can often be more settled than you might imagine and the campervans provide a protected and inclusive space for the bridal party to travel and chat together on the way to the church or celebration venue. Although winter is certainly a less busy time and we normally schedule vehicle maintenance for early January, Christmas and New Year holiday period weddings remain popular as many more family members are available to attend.” Georgina Postlethwaite added: “We have had some amazing themed winter weddings [at The Assembly House]. One that sticks out is a Hallowe’en wedding where the couple had carved out these amazing, massive

pumpkins in so many imaginative designs and then filled them with lots of candles, and there were gourds everywhere! Everything was Cadbury’s purple and bright orange! The photos of all the guests, with sparklers in their hands, taken in the courtyard, was beautiful.” In fact, the photo opportunities are endless, with wintry scenes and real fires making a dramatic backdrop to wedding shots. It’s also worth bearing in mind that weddings that take place in the winter months will often require a hen or stag event in the cooler months, too, and the winter weather affords some interesting choices for these. High Lodge in Suffolk, for example, offers ‘The Ultimate Stag & Hen Experience’. Its promotional information states: “We are East Anglia’s leading stag and hen activity organisers, working in conjunction with Ellough Park Raceway, Beccles, and Coastal Voyager, Southwold, arranging action-packed days with a difference. Our three combined activities of powerboating, clay shooting and karting couldn’t be easier to organise, all you need to do is choose a stag and hen activity package!” When it comes to the wedding itself, the secluded Suffolk wedding venue High Lodge (www.highlodge.co.uk) also offers a number of new Claywood Retreat luxury lodges, with Willow the designated honeymoon lodge – a luxury, one-bedroom lodge which is ideal for two people, with fabulous views over the golf course and a private outdoor hot tub. High Lodge offers a choice of wedding options, with The Champion Suite, the main wedding venue reception room, seating up to 180 guests and accommodating up to 350 for an evening reception. So, with so much on offer around East Anglia, it seems that winter weddings could be the way to go! 67

James Spicer discovers the perfect place to get away from it all, a veritable paradise in the heart of the Cotswolds

T

here comes a time in life when you need a

complete rest, a chance to gather your thoughts and to recharge those batteries. The answer can be to take time out. Or, should I say, Thyme out. This is not some herb-inspired pun: Thyme, as I found out recently, is the perfect place to get away from it all, in superb comfort and sampling some of the best cuisine you are likely to come across. Thyme – says its media introduction – is an exemplary country destination in the Cotswolds, celebrating all things quintessentially English: the land, the seasons, local produce and design. No more need be said. Located on a small English country estate, Thyme, a beautifully restored private property which opened for bookings last autumn, is found on the edge of the idyllic village of Southrop, in Gloucestershire, comprising a 15th century manor house, medieval barns and a Norman church. Over the past 12 years, Thyme has undergone an extensive, meticulous restoration at the hands of Thyme founder, Caryn Hibbert and her family. To date, the accommodation comprises eight bedroom suites and three cottage suites; two beautifully restored cottages and a spectacular entertaining and private dining space. The Baa is a stylish guest drawing room and bar serving botanical cocktails and infusions, inspired by Thyme’s herb garden. Along the road, a few moments’ walk away, is The Swan, a 17th century English village pub in which evening meals can be taken. And, to top it all off, Thyme offers its award-winning cookery school.

GOOD FOOD IS A “MUST” for any hotel

wishing to succeed. The food at Thyme is exceptional; not only are most of the ingredients sourced from the kitchen garden and farm, but the dishes are served with style and originality. On our first morning we were offered the chance to take breakfast in the gardens, which we rapidly took. A glance at the menu confirmed that this was going to be an experience as much as a meal, with fresh flowers on our table alongside the crisp, white linen napkins and shiny cutlery. Menus are changed daily but ours contained items such as hot, smoked salmon with chilli roasted kitchen garden tomatoes and eggs; or warm banana bread with homemade ricotta, roast apricot and honey. This, by the way, was the “cooked” element (not a mention of bacon and eggs!). The “help yourself” bit included Cotswold yoghurt, strawberry compote and simply the best granola (home-made) I have ever sampled. There then were fresh croissants, organic sourdough bread and local preserves. Our evening meal at The Swan was similarly original in its concept. Starters included Asian beef salad with sesame, soy, cashews and crispy shallots; or local buffalo mozzarella with beetroot, pine nuts, balsamic and soft-boiled quail’s egg. For mains, you could select the likes of Cornish hake fillet with prosciutto, globe artichokes, asparagus and broad beans; or Southrop Manor Estate pork schnitzel with Barkham Blue cheese, and caper and lemon butter. And how about chocolate Viennoiserie bread and butter pudding with crème Anglaise to finish with?

The restoration has been carried out most sympathetically using lots of that beautiful honeyed Cotswold stone, and room interiors have been enhanced from nearby Tetbury. The gardens are quite delightful, having been designed by Bunny Guinness. We visited during the recent hot spell, and, after our journey, found solace and relaxation in a courtyard in which the air was heavy with the smell of box and various herbs in planters. The award-winning cookery school at Thyme aims to “tell the complete story of food” and aspiring chefs or passionate home cooks will learn so much more than essential kitchen techniques. On the menu here is sharing a love of the land, and learning about seasonality, working with the farm and kitchen gardens, as well as baking, charcuterie and foraging. Visitors also have demonstrations, talks, tastings and hands-on classes, all in the exquisite surroundings of a Bulthaup kitchen. In fact, Thyme is so beautifully peaceful that the temptation is to not do very much. In summer there are the gardens in which to sit and read; colder weather might find guests beside one of the many open fireplaces on a comfortable chair. And all aided by (mostly female) staff, constantly helpful but unobtrusive. Just relax – it’s simply that sort of place. 75

As tempting as it is not to leave Thyme there are so many lovely places to visit in the Cotswolds. Here are just a few suggestions

ONCE DESCRIBED by William Morris as “the most beautiful village in England”, the chocolate box village of Bibury is one of England’s most iconic hamlets and home to the peaceful River Coln and some of the most photographed houses in the country. A scene from Bibury can be seen inside the front cover of your passport. Visit Arlington Row, a row of 14th century weavers’ cottages that has been the foundation of Bibury for hundreds of years and is instantly recognisable as a symbol of the Cotswold District. And the Bibury Trout Farm: one of Britain’s oldest and most well-preserved trout farms offers a “catch your own” fishery, a fish shop full of wine and deli products, and plenty of barbecues where you can cook your trout and enjoy the surrounding scenery.

THIS CHARMING VILLAGE nestles beneath the Worcestershire hills of the Cotswolds and attracts visitors from across the world. It is a delightful, vibrant place with a superb range of unique shops and designer boutiques, restaurants and hotels but is also steeped in history with its origins dating back to Roman times. Over the centuries it has made its mark in many different ways. In the 1600s it was a major stopping place for the stage coaches that travelled between Worcester and London – with the world-renowned Lygon Arms remaining popular with travellers and visitors.

Stow-on-THE-WOLd

coTswOLD WATEr Park

is perhaps the best-known of the small Cotswolds towns. It stands exposed on a 700 feet high hill at a junction of seven major roads, including the Roman Fosse Way. At the height of the Cotswold wool industry, the town was famous for its huge annual fairs where as many as 20,000 sheep were sold at one time. The vast Market Square testifies to the town’s former importance. At one end stands the ancient cross, and at the other the town stocks, shaded between an old elm tree. Around the square the visitor is faced with an elegant array of Cotswold town houses. Stow is an important shopping centre and has many fine antique shops, art galleries, gifts and crafts and is a centre for walking in the Cotswolds countryside.

square miles, there is something for everyone – from angling to archery, walking to watersports, birdwatching to biking, to name just a few. But we took the chance to enjoy one of the superb walks, helped by the guide on sale at the park for just £1. The western section of the Cotswold Water Park lies to the west of the A419 between Swindon and Cirencester, centred around the B4696 Spine Road. It encompasses the villages of South Cerney, Cerney Wick, Somerford Keynes, Poole Keynes, and Ashton Keynes, along with the vibrant Saxon town of Cricklade. The eastern section lies to the east of the A419, and contains the villages of Down Ampney, Marston Meysey, Kempsford, Whelford, and the thriving towns of Fairford and Lechlade-on-Thames.

CHIpPiNG nORToN

THIS IS THE HIGHEST TOWN in oxfordshire, situated on the western slopes of the “wool” church of St Mary at Chipping Norton hillside that was once the site of a Norman castle. The word “Chipping” is derived from “ceapen”, an old English word meaning market. Alternatively the meaning comes from the medieval word “chepynge” meaning long market square. There has been a market here since the 13th century and this was a major wool-trading town in the 15th century; the great “wool” church of St Mary, built in perpendicular style, testifies to its prosperity. The church has one of the finest interiors among the great Cotswold churches. The slender supporting pillars and the clerestory windows form an almost continuous band of glass above the nave to give the church a feeling of great height and lightness. The church is also noted for its unusual hexagonal porch with vaulted ceiling.

AS THE EVENINGS START TO COOL AND THE LEAVES BEGIN TO TURN, GET OUT IN THE GARDEN TO HARVEST THE MOST FROM SEPTEMBER, ADVISES OUR GARDENING EXPERT ELLEN MARY

September is a great month to begin collecting seeds from your favourite plants to sow for more colour in the following years. Make sure it’s a dry, still day and have a few paper bags ready – this is a simple and free way to propagate more plants. Then keep the seeds cool and dry until it is time to sow them. As leaves turn for the cooler months ahead, they will soon be all over your lawn! Make sure you rake them up and either compost them in with your other materials or put them in a black sack, punch in a few air holes and move them to a secure place in the garden. Leaf mulch is ideal for using around perennial plants, so allow them to break down over the following year or two and you will have some free mulch. It’s already time to start planning your bulbs for spring colour, so sit down and enjoy the bulb catalogues; we’re always looking ahead in the world of gardening! Choose from bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths along with summerflowering bulbs such as lilies, alliums and crocosmia.

78

Fruit & Vegetables

Wildlife Gardening

Your bean and pea harvest will be coming to an end, so when you have finished picking them, cut the plants to ground level and leave the roots in place, allowing nitrogen to be released slowly as the roots break down. This form of nitrogen fixing is great for your soil and for planting brassicas the following year. If you have a greenhouse, make sure it gets a really good clean to prevent pests from taking over during the winter, ensuring you are well prepared for seedsowing in spring. Try using a chemical-free garlic fumigator which releases garlic smoke into the greenhouse and kills off many pests and diseases. It’s a good time of year to clean out trays, pots and other garden structures as well. Some crops will be coming to the end as we move into the autumn harvest, but don’t forget it’s time to plant out onion sets and garlic bulbs for a spring crop. Onion ‘First Early’ is a great variety to try and Garlic ‘Chesnok Red’ is arguably one of the best-tasting garlics available.

As much as it’s tempting to remove seed heads as they go over, allow some to run to seed in order to provide valuable food for birds and wildlife over the winter months. Thistles, teasels, sedum and sunflower heads not only look visually attractive but provide hiding spaces for mini garden creatures. Wood piles can also be a great habitat for many species and feeding grounds for many more. In autumn we start to step up bird feeding, so now is a good time to make sure all bird baths and feeding stations are given a good clean and replace any broken or damaged feeders to protect our feathered friends from disease. Store your seed in a safe, easy area for you to access even in icy conditions and away from where rodents can reach it. Autumn is also the perfect time of year to create new beds and borders or shuffle around an existing space. As you look at planting out new perennials, think about how suitable they are to our garden wildlife. Single-headed flowers in general are more attractive to insects than double blooms because the pollen is easier to access.

“The all-time low base rate of 0.25 per cent will further stimulate the property market as general mortgage products will be cheaper and existing payments will be even lower”

GREAT INVESTMENTS IN YARMOUTH AND GORLESTON DIRECTOR DANIEL BYCROFT FROM BYCROFT RESIDENTIAL LOOKS AT THE AREAS OFFERING THE BEST RETURN FOR YOUR MONEY

A couple of Great Yarmouth facts: Great Yarmouth has been a seaside resort since the late 18th century and today the borough is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the country. This busy British resort has over 70,000 available bed spaces, caters for around four million day visits and nearly five million visitor nights each year and as a collective industry is now worth just over £530 million a year. In the summer months the borough’s population of 100,000 effectively doubles. There is heavy dependency on the tourist industry and 78 per cent of the jobs in the borough are servicebased. The Great Yarmouth summer season is one of my favourite times of year and right now, while writing this in the middle of August, the place is absolutely buzzing. The all-important weather has, on the whole, been excellent and I am sure that we will hear positive reports from the seafront traders by the end of the season. This all helps to instill more confidence in the local property market here on the east coast which continues to move along nicely following the “Brexit wobble.” In years gone by we would have looked at August and December as being very quiet months in our estate agency calendar, but the last three Augusts have bucked this old trend and have actually been our busiest months of each year. We are on track again to make good sales in our Great Yarmouth and Gorleston departments in August this year and we feel that this is due to the time people have while away from work to carry out searches on websites such as www.charlesbycroft.co.uk and www.rightmove.co.uk which are now so much easier with hand-held devices on the go. The real trick, of course, is negotiating the sale and making sure it proceeds to completion,

but that’s another topic for next time… I predicted in my last article that interest rates were not going to go up and the good news is that the Bank of England Monetary Committee reduced the base rate by a quarter point – resulting in the all-time low base rate of 0.25 per cent. This will further stimulate the property market as general mortgage products will be cheaper and existing tracker mortgage payments will now be even lower. Those who have good savings (especially the lucky baby boomers!) may wish to seek better investment methods and investing in bricks and mortar in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston is a solid investment strategy. We are finding strong demand from investors, particularly in the terraced house sector – where in this part of the county terraced houses can still be bought for less than £100K and rented out for £500 per month producing a gross six per cent return. This rental yield, when added to the potential for capital growth of, say, three per cent per year, makes investing in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston a really sensible move. We are finding good numbers of investors from Norwich seeking opportunities here on the east coast and, when compared to the Norwich market, the yield returns here are superb. There is also a good supply of quality tenants to compliment the supply within the rental sector which has been a constantly growing part of our business for the last eight years. Nationally there has been a near doubling in the proportion of private renters across England, up from 11 per cent in 2003 to 19 per cent in 2015. As we look towards the autumn market, we feel very confident with the underlying fundamentals. Applicant enquiries are strong and buyer motivation is positive given lending rates and general demand caused by continued real under-supply. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors recently said that the “acute shortage of property for sale”, with the supply of homes on the market close to record lows in most parts of the UK, appears to be helping underpin house prices.

There are three bedrooms upstairs: a master bedroom (16’3” x 15’4”/4.95m x 4.67m) and two other bedrooms, all of which benefit from plenty of natural light, as does the family bathroom which has a Jacuzzi corner bath, bidet, WC and wash basin. The study/bedroom has Velux-style windows above and a window to the side and offers flexibility as either a study or a fourth bedroom. The property benefits from an additional shower room and a 15’3” x 14’7” (4.65m x 4.44m) kitchen/ breakfast room which is fitted with a gas-fired Aga, matching wall and base units, a built-in electric oven, a gas hob and space for a dishwasher and washing machine. The useful utility room is 7’3” x 3’11” (2.21m x 1.19m) and has windows and doors to the rear; this space is ideal for storage and has both power and lighting. An ornate wooden staircase leads up to the gallery landing, giving access to all the first floor rooms and the family bathroom. The rear garden is deceptively large and boasts a wealth of interesting features. Close to the main house there’s a large patio area, which has access to the rear office with granite steps leading to the lawn. The lawn area includes an ornate feature pond and an array of mature shrubs, hedges and bushes with pear and apple trees at the rear. At the rear of the garden, wrought iron gates lead to The Copse, an additional garden area which is fully enclosed by timber fencing, mature trees and a brick wall, offering you your very own ‘secret garden’. The property also has a workshop, four useful outbuildings and a cart lodge and log/wood storage area. Meanwhile the second section of the garden wraps round to the side of the property and would make an ideal building plot (subject to planning permission) for a second dwelling, with access via the second driveway. The whole of the rear is fully enclosed via a brick wall, mature trees, hedges and timber fencing, making this a very attractive, private property.

My latest project was to fully renovate a kitchen

TuRniNG Dreams IntO REAlITy

It takes a lot of hard work to get a kitchen design just right and Coulby Interiors’ latest project is no exception. In her latest column,Rebecca Coulby explains the meticulous planning and design work that goes into transforming a dream kitchen into a reality –

in a 19th century farmhouse. Over the years, the original kitchen has been extended a number of times, making it a disjointed space. The original exterior walls were, in part, retained within the kitchen, emphasising the fact that the dining area was actually an extension of the original house with a dated plastic, polycarbonate roof. My design involved completely opening up the space by removing all the old, external walls to create a single, large kitchen-diner. The centre piece of the room was to be a super-size quartz island with integrated sinks and seating for six people and we wanted to allow the light and garden space to flow into the new kitchen. The design also included a new set of French doors to replace the existing rear door. In order to successfully achieve the open-plan look, the internal walls had to be removed and supported with a reinforced steel beam. New plumbing and electrics were required for the new sink position in the central island and a new tiled roof had to be constructed. As the farmhouse dates from the 1850s, I chose natural

and classic materials in keeping with the property’s age. It was important to mix light tones throughout with some darker, statement tones to create an elegant contrast. I used grey tones for the kitchen units and doors with pewter handles, and rich single stave walnut for worktops, contrasting beautifully with the white, light-reflecting, solid quartz central island. My aim with the design was to create a large working kitchen with bespoke and built-in units and appliances, whilst incorporating a large dining and entertaining area. For tiling, I chose a classic light metro tile and used wonderful Furnace Copper tiles for the recessed shelves. I was keen to create various mood lighting so, as well as a range of LED downlights, I also designed and installed LED strip lighting along all the recessed shelves as well as a centrepiece pendant light which can be dimmed dependent on the lighting effect required. The overall look is fabulous. Creating a classic kitchen diner with a modern twist, perfect for entertaining, family meals or as just a wonderfully calm space in which to relax. 91

STEP UP YOUR STYLE

Find out all about Kerrys Home Furnishings – the exciting new interiors store in Lowestoft

Kerrys Home Furnishings is the brainchild of, and latest venture from, Andrew Kerry, the man who built the Mattressman brand; a brand that became the sixth fastest growing business in the country and now employs over 230 people. In fact, Kerrys was a successful furnishings business before the launch of the now famous mattress company. With Mattressman now firmly established, with 17 branches and a manufacturing division, Mr Kerry has opened the new Kerrys store to deliver the same ethic of good quality and realistic prices from a family firm. And the family name is instantly prominent on the new store in Suffolk Road, Lowestoft. It’s beautifully stencilled on to the building in traditional style, using heritage colours, with a modern twist. That winning combination of heritage and style is immediately evident as soon as you enter the shop itself. The products are displayed in a big, light and airy space that’s everything a furniture store for today should be, and the range of products features both contemporary and traditional pieces. The shop is already open, and business is booming, but there are exciting plans to enhance the Kerrys offering to customers even more over the coming weeks. September will see the furniture department move to the upstairs floor, while downstairs there will be a new cookshop. Mr Kerry says that this will: “offer the full range of pots and pans, kettles, toasters, crockery and glassware.”

A carpets and floorings department will also be added. So, too, will a soft furnishings offering, with a full range of curtains and bedding which, together with the kitchens, bedroom and lounge furnishings, will make Kerrys the complete furniture department store. The brands that Kerrys carry reflect the high quality, mainly British, modern and traditional mix that define the company’s style. Kitchens from Chippendale and Neff, furniture from Lebus and Buoyant, appliances by Tefal and Dualit, as well as carpets from Brintons and Abingdon are all part of the stunning and eclectic collection of products in stock to delight the discerning home-maker. It really is a brand new store packed with outstanding brands. The shop itself has been launched after careful research. Located in a superb refurbishment of the old Godfrey’s store, it’s at the busy end of Lowestoft’s increasingly busy shopping area. Products have been selected to appeal to a wide demographic, ensuring that the established and traditional market is catered for, as well as those who will move into the numerous new houses being built in the area. Andrew Kerry sees the store as “a real family business, offering a superb range. It’s truly a furniture department store. We’ll have something for every part of your home.” That certainly includes all the little details, too. In amongst the furniture there’s a fabulous selection of photo frames, aroma diffusers and ornaments as well as candles and cushions. All those little finishing touches that really make a house a home. This mix of modern and traditional is evident throughout the showroom. Bright modern pieces, offset beautifully against the cool, fashionably pale decor, are mingled with classic furniture in easy to walk around displays. From sofas to beds to appealing accessories, the Kerrys experience is further enhanced by friendly, attentive – and knowledgable – staff. They offer a full service which, for kitchens, for instance, includes a free home measure and design service. Andrew Kerry is keen to point out that the exciting range of kitchen unit carcasses, doors, worktops, sinks, taps and appliances, combined with the store’s design input, means you can “create the kitchen of your dreams.” There’s a car park, too, which fits with the plan to make Kerrys a destination store, easily accessible for the town centre shopper. One visitor, who won’t need the car park, but who will be upholding a real tradition, is no less than Santa. He’ll be at Kerrys this Christmas dispensing gifts and seasonal cheer from his grotto in the store! And after Christmas? The new year is, of course, traditionally a time when we turn our attention to revamping and refurbishing our homes. With Kerrys Home Furnishings on the scene you’ll find plenty of ideas and products to inspire you. The arrival of Kerrys Home Furnishings has breathed new life into a building with a long legacy in retailing. It’s about to breathe some new life into your lifestyle!

SECOND TO NONE

Finding the right secondary school for your child is vitally important, with plenty of factors to consider It’s a big step up from primary to secondary school.

Having been the senior children at junior school, the Year 6 pupils have to start all over again when they move to a new – and generally much bigger – high school. While it may be a little daunting, it can also be a time for new opportunities and a fresh chapter in life for children with the chance to make new friends, enjoy and experience a whole range of additional activities and a different learning experience and environment. However, the core of a successful transition can often lie with parents choosing the right school for their son or daughter. And while pupils may only just be starting out on Y6, thoughts will already be turning to secondary school and choosing a place to study. Some parents may prefer their child to attend the secondary school that they happily attended not so many years ago, but for other families, perhaps new to the area, it may be a case of having to get to know the local schools a little better and find out how well they are performing in terms of exam results, for example. Most, if not all, secondary schools will invite prospective pupils and their parents along – often during an evening where they can meet teachers and current pupils to talk about the learning experience from both perspectives. 102

EDUCATION

secondary school selection Schools will also hold open days, where parents and their children can see how a school feels when it is actually full of pupils learning in classroom, or active in the gym or on the sports field. They can perhaps even sample the food on offer in the dining hall. Just walking around a school and interacting with staff and pupils can deliver a valuable insight into whether it feels a comfortable place for your child. It is important for the child to be involved in the decisionmaking process, too, as they will also be able to sense whether a school feels right for them. In Norfolk, the County Council has extensive information available about choosing news schools online at www.norfolk.gov.uk/admissions and the site will be updated during September. Effectively applications for a preferred school need to be in by October 31, with announcement day on March 1, 2017. The site has a wide range of information on dates, on where parents can find support, and advice on going to open days and how to find out about them. The Council’s head of admissions Richard Snowden said: “All admissions information will be available on the website from early September and parents or carers of eligible children will be contacted directly with the admissions procedure and deadlines for application. “There is lots of useful information and support for parents available on the website including specific school information, frequently asked questions and guidance on how to apply. “Most schools will offer open days during the autumn term for parents of new pupils and it’s a good way to get to know the teachers at the school, have the chance to view facilities and ask any questions they may have.” Looking at an Ofsted report can be a helpful starting point, but it is best to look out for times and dates of the open days and evenings that schools offer. There are other factors to take into consideration, too,

such as the logistics of getting to a new school, how far away it is, whether public transport is available and, if so, what times the buses run. The school closest to home may not necessarily be the one that’s best for a specific child; some schools are academies or have a specialist area of expertise such as in sport, humanities or science. If your child is particularly gifted in a specific area, it may be a case of choosing a school that is a little further away, but one which fits with their interests and aspirations. Exams results are also a good pointer as well as indications of how well students do after leaving school such as in the workplace or going on to university. There is much to be said about the approach of staff and head teachers and their longer-term vision for an educational establishment – in other words, are you as parents confident that the school is going to be the place it appears today in four or five years’ time when your son or daughter is looking at taking their ‘O’ Level exams, or looking toward sitting A-Levels? Another element that you may wish to consider is the school’s approach to extra-curricular activities, excursions, trips and after-school clubs. These may be considerations for working parents but there may also be additional activities on offer that will further stimulate a child or provide the opportunity to pursue a brand new interest. With a decision having to be made for preferred options in the autumn term, the next few weeks are hugely important and so this is the time when those big decisions need to be made. It is this time of year, therefore, that parents need to be actively involved in choosing the next education step for their children. Taking advantage of all the information that is available is critical so that informed choices can be made about the way their son or daughter will be educated over the next five or more years of their school lives.

LEARNING THROUGH LIFE In the heart of an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, Saint Felix School in Southwold has been providing educational excellence for over 100 years This co-educational school for boarders and

day pupils cares for children from the ages of two to eighteen, ensuring smooth transition and constant support. It provides everything your child needs to flourish and become a wellrounded individual who fulfils their potential and is prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. At Saint Felix it’s clear to see that the quality of teaching is paramount. A school is only as good as its teachers, which is why it puts so much care and effort into securing the best staff. Class sizes are small, allowing children the space and attention to facilitate their learning in an environment that is encouraging and nurturing. The positive effect of this is evident in Saint Felix’s excellent academic results – 2015 saw a 100 per cent pass rate at A Level – and the breadth of subjects available to study ensures that

each child has a complete education. But more than that, it develops an atmosphere that engenders high quality social skills, self-confidence and everything they need to become a capable adult. It’s not just in the classroom that pupils enjoy themselves. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities for children to take advantage of and they are actively encouraged to take part in the sports on offer. In the grounds of Saint Felix there is a fully equipped gym, an indoor swimming pool, a dance studio, several sports pitches and much more. There are a number of fully competitive sports teams across all ages, and the equestrian offering is one of the best in the country, recently achieving third place in the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Leadership is also encouraged; students are given the opportunity to coach younger pupils and gain qualifications, with many going on to successfully coach in the community. The Arts are another area of strength at Saint Felix, with numerous opportunities to engage in the various strands. It is a centre of excellence for photography and students regularly gain places at the top art schools. Musicians can join one of the many ensembles and groups, while drama students are involved in productions throughout the year. This September is the start of a new era with incoming head James Harrison replacing the retiring Fran D’Alcorn. Pledging that the school will continue to be more than just an “exam factory”, Mr Harrison is determined that the close family environment Saint Felix prides itself on will remain paramount during his time as head. NAVIGATING SUCCESS The Royal Hospital School in Suffolk

is very proud of its past with traditional values continuing to shape its present, as headmaster Simon Lockyer explains…

The Royal Hospital School was founded in 1712 in Greenwich, London, to “improve navigation” through education and, as it prepared boys for a life at sea, many went on to become explorers and pioneers of their time. We are immensely proud of these historic links and discovery, exploration and challenge continue to shape our ethos. The traditional values of loyalty, commitment, courage, respect, service and integrity have underpinned the School’s core aims and philosophy from the very beginning. 300 years later, they are still as relevant to the education we provide as they were then. Today the Royal Hospital School is set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the Stour Estuary and it is a leading independent, co-educational boarding and day school providing a full and broad education, fit for the modern world. We inspire our pupils to have the courage and commitment to be ambitious for their futures, whichever path they choose. Everyone can achieve the most exceptional things but we are all different. That is why we focus on the individual, getting to know every one of our pupils and finding out what motivates them.

We challenge pupils of all academic abilities, steering them to look beyond the moment, and beyond the confines of the classroom, and to approach life with an open and receptive mind. It is through thinking, creativity and taking the initiative that they learn to establish, and work towards, their own personal goals. By understanding a young person’s strengths, and what he or she might find more difficult, we can help them to make the right choices at the right time, navigating them through their critical, formative years and ensuring their education becomes the foundation for happiness and success. It is this unique blend of a values-driven education with the focus on individual challenge and appropriate guidance that enables our pupils to develop into self-reliant, socially responsible adults with enviable open-mindedness and resilience, so sought-after by employers and important in life.

AN ACADEMY FOR ALL Lynn Grove Academy in Gorleston is small enough to care about every child, and big enough to be exciting Alison Mobbs, principal at Lynn Grove Academy, is very aware that the 11 to 16 years age range of students at the school means that: “they come to us as children and leave as young adults.” It comes as no surprise then that much of the school’s ethos is aimed at preparing young people for the next stage of their education and adult life. “We want our young people to leave us resilient, resourceful and ready!” Lynn Grove Academy is a real educational community. “We are an inclusive school; every child here makes good academic progress whatever their starting point. And, because it’s a community, everybody contributes.” All the staff members at the Academy are committed to the development of the “whole child”. Alongside academic studies, students have a huge range of opportunities for enrichment, with 108

music, drama and sport being particular strengths. However, the aim is to make sure that there is something for everyone. Developing leadership is given high priority in the academy too; from prefects to sports leaders, from pupil mentors to charity co-ordinators to young interpreters – every young person has the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Alison Mobbs says: “This is the attitude that runs through Lynn Grove Academy. It’s an open-minded environment. Staff and students alike accept and celebrate our differences. We want young people to be educated here, but also to find themselves. When they leave us we want them to have discovered what they’re good at and have developed a passion for something that they take on to enrich their futures.” Teaching at the Academy fosters a creative approach, putting emphasis on students realising their full potential in everything they do; they are encouraged to aim high. Which is why standards and expectations are high. Lessons are challenging, engaging and exciting, and pupils respond by working hard. At every stage the students know exactly how they are getting on and what they need to do to improve. “Students here develop the confidence to aim high, work independently, and take setbacks in their stride. We strive to develop creative thinkers who are imaginative, resourceful and resilient and who emerge from our school as well-rounded, confident individuals ready for life after Lynn Grove.” The school boasts excellent resources, not least among them being the outstanding library which houses 12,000 books and frequently hosts visits by leading authors. As Alison comments: “We are proud to say that Lynn Grove reads!”

Lynn Grove Academy is part of The Creative Education Trust. This non-profit educational charity is recognised by the Department for Education as one of the UK’s leading multi-academy chains. Consisting currently of eight secondary academies and four primary academies across the Midlands and East Norfolk, the Trust is committed to improvement in academic standards, as well as in curricular innovation and staff development. There are plans for expansion over the next two years, but not at the expense of the bespoke and dedicated teaching at each school. It’s an ethos that echoes the “small enough to care, big enough to be exciting” approach of Lynn Grove itself. Creative Education Trust schools share a commitment to developing innovative and exciting approaches to curriculum development and teaching methods. They believe that the most effective learners are those who are able to connect what they know, make links and in this way develop and extend their knowledge. Extensive work with future employers has helped Lynn Grove develop an approach that fosters creativity and enables students to flourish in ways they had not thought possible. As Alison Mobbs explains: “We are committed to the provision of appropriate support so that every individual can realise their full potential. Whatever their starting point, Lynn Grove pupils make excellent academic progress.” The pupils are well supported throughout their learning; Lynn Grove Academy prides itself on delivering outstanding pastoral care. That includes collaboration with parents to support students and allow them to embrace all the opportunities that come their way. Engagement with the local community is another key aim of Lynn Grove. Alison says: “We believe our young people should understand and respect their local community and we aim to help them to find opportunities to make a real contribution. We acknowledge that our pupils need to be equipped to thrive in an increasingly globalised world and this is why we organise an extensive range of overseas trips.” Nearer to home, informing prospective students and parents about the values, resources, aims and achievements of the school is always high on the community involvement agenda. As part of that continual programme, the Academy is holding its next Open Evening for prospective pupils on Tuesday, September 20 at 6pm. “I really do extend a warm welcome and open invitation for people to come and see us”, says Alison Mobbs.

KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND Established local law firm Clapham & Collinge has expanded its network with new offices in North Walsham

With an innovative new look and a refreshing approach to law, a well-known Norfolk law firm has expanded its network of offices in the county. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors has opened a branch in the market town of North Walsham, extending its reach across North Norfolk. The new offices build on an existing presence in Norwich, Sheringham and Brooke for a firm which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. As an independent law firm acting for individuals and business clients, the team at Clapham & Collinge believes in adopting an informal and friendly approach to its customers. Partner and head of family and charities departments Neale Grearson said: “We provide a full range of legal services for business and individuals in Norfolk; everything from divorce, conveyancing, wills, trusts and probate. “We are very much a law firm that is trying to move away from the stuffy stereotype of solicitors’ offices with a more open and approachable stance and one where we want to encourage our clients to call when they have a problem without worrying about the bills starting to run up straight away. We take an innovative approach to meet the needs of our clients by offering appointments outside usual office hours and at their home or business if they prefer rather than coming into the office.”

Business clients also receive the full attention and expertise of the Clapham & Collinge team with services including debt recovery, litigation and disputes, employment and commercial property law. With offices open six days a week, staff members at Clapham & Collinge are committed to making themselves more accessible to existing and new clients. Marketing manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said: “As a firm of solicitors we work very hard to set ourselves apart from the competition in that we are more approachable and try to provide added value with our involvement in the community and our work with dementia awareness events and various training sessions.” “We also offer free advice mornings where people can come in and see our solicitors on a range of issues such as conveyancing, lasting powers of attorney, wills or family legal advice,” he added. One of the key tenets for Clapham & Collinge lies in striving for excellence within the profession and adopting innovative ways to resolve legal issues by finding solutions that meet the unique needs and goals of the individual or business. In offering a modern and comprehensive service, a high level of personal service is very much the company’s hallmark. Working with, and supporting, local charities is an important part of the firm’s outlook. The successful ‘Lunch on the Green’ event held at the Norwich office on Wednesday, July 13 raised £5,700 for Norfolk children’s charity Break. “With some 300 people attending it was the biggest Lunch on the Green in the event’s FOR MORE INFORMATION eight-year history,” explained Mr Hilldrupabout Clapham & Collinge call Boorman. “We are very proud to be active in the 01603 693500, email info@ wider community, particularly with our charity clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk fundraising work.”

Clapham & Collinge also has a dedicated charities team with members of staff drawn from each department to offer commercial legal advice and support on charity law to charitable organisations. With six partners, the company employs more than 60 members of staff with a wide spread of legal expertise. Neale Grearson explained: “The opening of the North Walsham office was in response to customer demand and seemed a natural extension of our presence in that part of Norfolk. “It follows on from the success of our Sheringham office and our move into a new office space last year. “In North Walsham, however, we have a slightly different feel to our other offices which have a walk-in reception. This is more of a shop window approach with a more informal feel than other typical solicitors’ office premises.” As with the other offices, North Walsham will be open six days a week, including from 9am to midday on a Saturday. In the last few months, Clapham & Collinge has been building a presence in North Walsham through a series of networking events and has already made a number of strong business contacts in the area. With the offices now open, a launch party is planned for later in September. “It is all about keeping a focus in Norfolk and staying local,” Mr Grearson added, “but expanding our network within the county to meet customer demand.”

“Another factor that you will need to take into account when planning retirement is the change to State Pension Ages, gradually increasing to 68”

Facing the future THIS HAS BEEN A YEAR OF SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE WAY THAT YOUR STATE PENSION ENTITLEMENT IS CALCULATED. CARL LAMB EXPLAINS

April 2016 saw the start of the new state pension regime with its planned single tier rate: the launch rate was £155.65 per week. You may be forgiven for thinking that everyone who has retired after that date would automatically get this sum, but life is never that straightforward. In fact, your state pension entitlement will depend on a wide range of factors. Firstly, existing pensioners won’t have seen any change to the way their pension is calculated, so anyone who reached their state pension age before April, 6, 2016 will receive a pension calculated under the old rules. Retiring after April 2016 doesn’t make it simple either. Even if your pension was entirely calculated on the basis of the new rules, the actual amount would depend on how many years of National Insurance Contribution (NIC) credits you have accumulated. You must have at least ten years’ worth of NIC credits to be entitled to any new state pension at all, and to achieve the full amount you must have built up a contribution history of 35 years. It’s important to remember that you are awarded NIC credits for years where you have been in receipt of certain benefits such as Child Benefit for a child under 16 before 2010 or, since 2010, for a child under 12. You are also awarded NIC credits for years where you were claiming other benefits such as Jobseekers’ Allowance or Carers’ Allowance. The calculation becomes much more complex for the vast majority of us who will have built up entitlements under both the old and new schemes. The new rules see the abolition of the Additional State Pension (formerly known as SERPS or State Second Pension) so there will no longer be the opportunity to increase your state pension entitlement through

the contributions you pay on higher earnings. However, the Additional State Pension entitlements you have already accumulated won’t just be thrown away: they will be taken into account when working out your entitlement when you retire. When the rules changed on April 6, 2016, each individual’s NI record to that date was assessed, and you would have been assigned a “starting amount” on to which any entitlements after April 6, 2016 will be added. If you’ve already accumulated a starting amount that is higher than the new State Pension amount, then your entitlement will have been frozen at that point. If your starting amount is lower, then you have the opportunity to build up your NIC record to reach entitlement to the full new state pension amount. Another factor that you will need to take into account when planning your retirement is the change to State Pension Ages. We are currently going through a transition period to bring the women’s state pension age into line with men at age 65 and then to gradually increase the state pension age for both to 68. What this means in practice is that if you are in your fifties or sixties at the moment, your state pension age will depend on your date of birth. The easiest way to find out your own specific state pension age is to go to the Government website at: www.gov.uk/calculate-state-pension and enter your date of birth into the online form. You can also use the online forms on this site to get a state pension forecast or statement which will show you exactly what you have built up already and will project how many more years of NICs you will need to accumulate to get your full entitlement. Whilst the state pension forms a valuable base for your retirement, it is important to plan ahead for additional income, if you are hoping to enjoy the finer things in life once you’ve retired.

LEGAL

norton peskett solicitors

“Whilst a verbal contract is perfectly legal, agreeing anything very complicated without a written note is storing up trouble”

Putting it in writıng LEGAL EXPERT JULIAN GIBBONS EXPLAINS WHY DRAWING UP A WRITTEN CONTRACT IS AN IMPORTANT THING TO DO

WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE that in this country the formalities of doing business or engaging in any sort of commercial agreement are comparatively relaxed as compared to many other countries. In English law, for example, almost no contract needs to be in writing. This means that you can sell your car, order a pizza or employ a builder without ever putting pen to paper. Contrast this to some countries in Europe. For instance, until recently in Italy both buyer and seller needed to go before a notary in order to sell a used car. In fact, many contracts which in England can be made with the shake of the hand need the intervention of a notary or other type of lawyer to be effective abroad. That is not to say, however, that never putting anything down in writing is a good way to go. Whilst a verbal contract is perfectly legal, agreeing anything very complicated without a written note is storing up trouble. If nothing else, a written document provides evidence of what has been agreed, particularly important when there is a lot of detail in the agreement. So, for example, anyone employing a builder to put up an extension needs all manner of things to be clear. For a start, what size do you want? How many and what type of windows and what sort of brick? Even the small details can be important, such as the type of finish, even how many plug sockets! This may sound trivial, but it is surprising how many contractual relationships between builder and customer break down over just such issues. There is also the hugely important question of price; not just what that price is, but what it includes and what is going to be considered an extra. Very

often, parties agree a base price for work, with lots of detail to be filled in later. This is to a degree inevitable, as deciding something as subjective as the colour and style of the bathroom fittings can take a lot of time and family discussion. Again, arguments can easily break out over what was agreed as an extra and what is or is not a reasonable price. Lest it be thought that these sorts of issues are the preserve of naïve consumers, I have sadly seen some major commercial builders run into exactly the same sort of problems, which often end up in court, where a judge has to try and untangle what, in fact, was agreed from a series of pieces of evidence. Evidence such as who said what to whom and often (more common these days) from strings of confusing emails, many using text speak or which are so ungrammatical that six months on they are even unclear to the writer re-reading them as to what he or she actually meant. One form of contract which does have to be in writing is for the sale of land, not only freehold land but for the granting of leases as well. The basic rule has been around since 1925, but it is surprising how even today people are falling into the trap of getting it wrong. In a recent case, a contract was found to be void against a wife where the husband had signed it on her behalf. In theory, a spouse can sign on behalf of the other if they have that person’s authority to do so. In this case, though, he did not, with a result that his claim to the return of the deposit because the transaction had not proceeded failed, with the judge saying that, whilst his wife was not bound by the contract he, as one of two proposed buyers, was. This case is a cautionary tale of what happens when you neglect all rules of procedure or assume that either they don’t matter or that the lawyers will sort out any problems. Probably more issues arise with property than any other sort of agreement. Even relatively straightforward transactions can have pitfalls, such as the recent do-it-yourself sub-lease I came across, which was granted for longer than the term of the head lease. In that case, the whole grant was probably void, but fortunately the matter sorted itself out thanks to the common sense of the parties. That, however, won’t always be the case. One such case was the one involving a hotel business sale which had an error on the plan attached to the transfer, which meant that it failed to transfer an out building containing the central heating boiler for the entire premises. Here, the buyer had to pay their neighbours for the privilege of getting their boiler back. Never assume a transaction is easy and always remember that the cost of paying a lawyer to sort out a mess will usually be greater than the cost of paying him to do the job in the first place.

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

alex brundle Stepping out of his father’s F1 shadow, rising endurance racing star Alex Brundle talks fast cars with Mark Nicholls

Photography by JEAN MICHEL LE MEUR and JAKOB EBREY/JOTA SPORT

Famous sons following famous fathers is a

recurrent theme in the world of motor sport. With Damon and Graham Hill and Jacques and Gilles Villeneuve in the past, today the F1 grid sees the likes of Nico Rosberg, Max Verstappen and Jolyon Palmer gracing the podium and following in their father’s F1 footsteps. Here in Norfolk, Alex Brundle is a rising star on the endurance car racing circuit, yet is a driver very much following his own track in life. The son of 1990’s F1 driver and TV motor racing pundit Martin Brundle, he laughs off suggestions that he too may become a Formula One ace. “I’m far too old for that,” says the 26-year-old. It may seem a little odd to suggest that but he points out that “late teens” is the current trending entry age for a F1 star – a clear reference to 18-year-old Max Verstappen who is lighting up Grand Prix racing behind the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. For Alex, 2016 is proving a successful season and currently sees him racing for two endurance teams. United Autosports secured his services for this year’s European Le Mans Series campaign as the Pro driver in their Morgan LMP3 lineup, where he won the first three races of the season. “At the same time JOTA were having a shuffle of their driver lineups and got in touch with me and asked if I wanted to drive for them in the World Endurance Championship series for the last six races after the Le Mans 24 hour race,” he added. “Of course, I said yes, so I will be competing in both series for both teams, which is great. “It is 10 races packed into three to four months, so my race week starts on a Tuesday afternoon and ends the following Monday with travel and preparation time associated with testing and making sure the car is right for the event, so it is much more than a full-time job. “I call it my ‘five to nine’, that’s the way I look at my day; it is very, very busy and will be from now until the end of the season.” Alex made his JOTA Sport debut on July 24 where he raced in the No.26 G-Drive Racing ORECA 05-Nissan car at the Nurburgring in Germany alongside Rene Rast and, Roman Rusinov and they were fastest in every session and held a commanding lead of the LMP2 class until a gearbox issue meant the team had to retire the car. Next it is Mexico, Austin Texas, Fuji in Japan, Shanghai and Bahrain, while in the European Series he will be racing at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium, the Paul Ricard Circuit in France and Estoril in Portugal. Endurance racing is a form of motorsport racing which tests the durability of cars and drivers with teams of two to four drivers covering six, 12 or 24 hours of racing in a single event. Alex’s father Martin was the 1988 World Sports Car Champion, a Le Mans winner as well as racing F1 for a range of teams in the 1980s and 1990s including Jordan and McLaren, and as a result Alex has always had the pit land in his blood, though emphasises that it remains important for him to make his own way in the sport.

While there can be plenty of advice and encouragement to hand, he adds: “It is useful, but you quickly reach a point where you have to deal with problems throughout the race yourself. “This is not the 1990s; cars are very different, races are very different, but where my father has helped me a lot is on the side of preparation, career management and representing myself in the paddock.” He recalls watching his father race, particularly at the British Grand Prix and elsewhere in the world, but his big memories are in the Le Mans race with Toyota and the Norfolk-built Bentley. But stepping out of his father’s shadow remains a challenge. “Being my father’s son comes with a certain amount of pressure, not least the view that I have a certain advantage and do not need assistance in the way that other drivers might receive assistance because people think my dad has got it covered,” he said. “Although it is a fantastic advantage in terms of contacts and having that experience I am massively thankful to him, I am still like so many other race drivers and need to make my own way.” Over his career, Alex has raced in Formula Two and Formula Three and the European Le Mans Series and FIA World Endurance Championship rounds. A highlight in 2012 was sharing the Greaves Motorsport car with his father, Martin – himself a former World Sportscar champion – at the Le Mans 24 Hours where the pair finished eighth. The following year he moved to French outfit OAK Racing in the FIA WEC LMP2 category where six podiums, including a career highlight second place at Le Mans, helped him finish runner-up in the final standings at the wheel of a Morgan LMP2. While 2015 was a difficult year with injuries, he has returned as a competitive driver, underlined by a hat-trick of wins at the start of this season in the European Le Mans series. Within the sport, there are a number of people he admires and not always the obvious present F1 giants; people such as Mark Webber, Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard, but when it comes to racers he is full of admiration for the Isle of Man motorcycle riders John McGuinness and Ian Hutchinson. “They are the really tough men of motor sport and there are to be admired,” he added. While being an F1 driver is not his key target, he has goals to be successful in endurance car racing in America, to win Le Mans, the Daytona 24 or Sebring 12 overnight race in a manufacturer’s car and to notch up some big races for the trophy cabinet. Born and raised in King’s Lynn, Alex attended primary school there before going to secondary school in Ely, but the family home is still in Norfolk. “I love it as a county, it is so serene and calm and beautiful and there are days of the year where it is pretty much the most beautiful place I have ever seen,” he said. “I love coming back to Norfolk.” But at the moment he is a young man living out of a suitcase from a base in London. “I fly so much I essentially have to be near an airport but I lead a nomadic existence and my time is filled with preparing for the race but also all the media commitments, accounting, agreements and a lot of admin as well as keeping in shape to be fit enough to race. “Endurance car racing requires a special type of fitness to cope with everything involved such as the G-forces,” he adds, “but you don’t get many chances to be a young racing driver, so I’m happy to take the opportunity and all that comes with it.”

MOTORING

new registration plates

Register your interest Two dates – March 1 and September 1 – cause great excitement in the UK motoring world when the new registration plates become available – James Spicer offers some advice to those thinking of taking the new car plunge…

| SEPTEMBER 2016

Apart from the fact that it will look great, resplendent in its shiny new colour, on your driveway, there are many advantages to buying a new car – and the showroom selection for September is larger than ever. First of all, you will get a manufacturerbacked warranty (most are for three years, but some manufacturers offer longer terms) which means that the dreaded MOT test is at least three years away. As a new car buyer, you will be able to take advantage of the various finance offers available. You may, of course, if you are able to do so, choose to buy the car outright: but you may find that the manufacturer you have chosen has some attractive finance deals. Many buyers take the personal contract plan (PCP) route these days. This involves spreading the cost over monthly payments which are generally lower than a loan, or hire purchase, and then either A) meeting a final payment which means you own the car; B) trading in for a new model by the same manufacturer: or C) handing back the car to the dealer – although these deals are done over an agreed mileage, and there may be penalties if you go over. If you have no trade-in you are generally in a stronger position to negotiate a good deal on a new car. If you are trading in, then be realistic – get an idea of its value according to mileage and condition.

126

Think carefully about what you require from your car – performance, room for the family, economy, petrol or diesel. Check the car tax rates before you buy, too. Think about taking out a pre-paid service package (some manufacturers offer this free of charge) – which offers a substantial discount on routine servicing rather than paying for each service separately. It’s worth considering, too, that a manufacturer is likely to be more sympathetic to claims after the warranty expires if the car was serviced by the dealership! A test drive is essential. It’s little use buying a car in which you are not comfortable – we’re all built differently. Take your time, and make sure the seat adjustments suit you and that the instruments are placed as you like them. If you have children, then they need to be comfortable. If you use a child seat, check that it will fit. Is the boot big enough? Do you prefer a hatchback or saloon; or might an estate version be better? Remember that this is a major purchase, and should be a pleasurable one. Your dealer will want to make sure that you are happy and he, or she, is there to help. Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric? There is a huge choice out there, and here are a few pointers…

HoNDA

HONDA IS THE FASTEST GROWING mainstream

car brand in Europe halfway through 2016. Total sales of 88,242 units to the end of June secures 33.5 per cent growth compared to same period in 2015. This strong demand is driven by the refreshed Civic range and the introduction of the all-new HR-V and Jazz. It was also helped by the reintroduction of the HR-V crossover and the Jazz supermini also saw a big increase in registrations, The Civic range also saw an increase of 8.3 per cent, supported by the introduction of the new Type R. Prices begin as: Jazz, from £13,485 (1.3i i-VTEC S); Civic, from £16.470 (1.4i VTEC S); CR-V from £22,775 (S 2.0 i-VTEC 2WD); and HR-V from £18,495 (1.5 i-VTEC S manual).

fOrD

ALWAYS A MARKET LEADER, the blue badge

reigns supreme in several sectors, notably through the Fiesta and Focus models, while the Mondeo is now available with four wheel drive. Ford also has a powerful presence in the SUV market, with the recently launched Edge joining the Kuga and updated EcoSport crossovers. Families are well catered for by the popular Galaxy and S-Max people carriers, while the updated C-Max and Grand C-Max models are roomy and versatile. At the other end of the scale, the city car Ka remains a popular choice.

THE WHOLE RANGE now utilises the

Skyactiv technology to reduce weight and maximise economy and efficiency. The popular MX-5 sports tourer is as popular as ever and recently celebrated its one millionth car rolling off the production line in Japan. Recognising this fact is a special edition model, the Icon. Elsewhere, the CX-3 compact SUV shares engines with the Mazda 3 hatchback and comes with either two or four wheel drive. The new Mazda 2 supermini has either 1.5 petrol or diesel engines, and is surprisingly spacious. The long-standing Mazda 6 saloon and estate range continue to be popular, as does the CX compact SUV.

MiTsuBISHi

THE SHOGUN OFF-ROADER made an early mark on the UK market with its space, comfort and performance, and shows no sign of fading popularity. The smaller Outlander has a hybrid version, the PHEV, which offers great economy in both city and country environments, balancing its battery and 2.0 litre petrol power to best effect. Smaller still, the ASX crossover offers saloon car handling with SUV practicality, and a choice of 1.6 petrol and 1.6 and 2.2diesel units. The L200 keeps the marque way out in front in the pick-up market with a powerful 2.4 turbo diesel power unit and outperforms many of its rivals.

sKODA

YOU WON’T BE ABLE to buy one just yet, but

the new Skoda seven SUV, the Kodiaq, will fill a gap in the range that has been obvious for some time. It will be available in both five and seven-seat configurations – the former, Skoda claims, will boast the largest boot capacity in its class. Top of the current range is the excellent and aptly named Superb, in hatchback and estate form, a range of top-notch petrol and diesel power, and four wheel drive option. The popular Fabia range comes in hatch and estate form and continues to be one of the top sellers, while the vRS has Octavia space in a “hot” hatch and there is also an all-wheel drive model. The range is completed by the popular Yeti crossover, the sprightly little Citigo runabout, plus the Roomster and Rapid ranges.

sUZuKI

BEST KNOWN for its stylish,

small SUV cars, the brand also boasts an all-new supermini, albeit with the familiar Baleno name. The car uses a new 1.0-litre three cylinder engine – a second application of Suzuki’s new Boosterjet technology. The 111PS Direct Injection Turbocharged engine (DITC) offers a wide spread of torque, with CO2 emissions of 105g/km for the manual transmission model. Six airbags, Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth, air conditioning and DAB radio are fitted as standard on all models. Radar Brake Support and Adaptive Cruise Control are fitted as standard to the SZ5 grade. It is priced from £12,999 for SZ-T 1.0 litre Boosterjet and £13,499 for the SZ5 1.2 litre SHVS version. The Celerio city car is roomy and has excellent economy via its 1.0 Dualjet petrol engine. The Swift supermini range features a four wheel drive version, while the new Vitara S and cute little Jimny complete the range.

peugEOT

FRENCH COMPANY PEUGEOT is prolific, with a presence in almost 160 countries and more than 10,000 sales outlets worldwide. As its promotional material states: “Peugeot combines design, style and emotion in all areas, with its ambition to be the world’s high-end generalist brand.” The distinctive lion motif can be found on a wide range of versatile vehicles and vans, from exciting hatchbacks such as the 308 and 308 SW to well-liked LCVs such as the Partner. Fleet cars are another strength, with the 508 ideal for drivers seeking a comfortable executive model offering excellent fuel economy.

SEAT

THE EXCELLENT

Spanish range offers vehicles to suit everyone, including the long-standing Alhambra MPV which offers seven-seat versatility and comfort. For something a little different, the Leon X-Perience offers four wheel drive combined with turbo diesel power. It is based on the Leon ST estate and is available in manual or automatic drive. The Mii is a fine city car and comes in either three or five door form and the option of an automatic gearbox for relaxed urban driving. There are facelifts for the Ibiza Sport Coupe, hatchback and Sport Tourer and SEAT has upgraded engines, technology and connectivity.

VOlvo

A BUZZWORD FOR RELIABILITY, Volvo’s

products continue to evolve. The company’s best-selling V40 and V40 Cross Country models have recently received some stylish updates, making the Swedish manufacturer’s popular hatchback even more appealing. These include the new LED ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights as standard, new grille meshes featuring the updated Volvo Iron Mark, new wheels and five new colours including the completely new Amazon

Blue and Denim Blue options. Julian King, general manager at M.R. King & Sons in Halesworth, Suffolk, commented: “The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in the UK and is hugely popular with customers at our dealership, making it a vital car for our business. With the updated version now available, Volvo has made this already very successful model even more attractive to customers, and its new appearance is already attracting a lot of attention out on the forecourt.”

the i10, has already had several awards since its New Generation model was launched, and brings class-leading space, levels of comfort and safety from the segment above, plus sophisticated exterior and interior design. The latest i10 has one of the most practical and spacious cabins in the sector. Innovative interior packaging gives way to segment-best boot volume (252 litres with rear seats in place and 1,046 litres with rear seats folded) and combined front and rear legroom (1,890mm). Good visibility is essential for city driving, and those choosing the i10 have a perceivably larger field of vision, making exiting blind turns safer and manoeuvring in tight city spaces easier. Customer clinic participants cited visibility as an area where New Generation i10 particularly impressed.

The new, sleeker exterior design has a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0,31 – the lowest in the segment – which is aided by detailed improvements such as windscreen sealing that does not protrude into the airstream. The aerodynamic shape reduces wind noise as well as fuel consumption, contributing to noise levels that are lower than those of key rivals. New Generation i10 is offered in a range of 11 vibrant exterior colours available in solid, metallic and pearl finishes. The solid colour range comprises Morning Blue and Polar White, while the metallic range is made up of Aqua Sparkling Metallic, Stardust Grey and Sleek Silver Metallic. The design team has matched the distinctive Mandarin Orange pearl paint with the New Generation i10. Inside there is a broader choice of seat trim options than before. Base models come

with a combination of cloth and vinyl in beige and black. Mid-specification models have tricot cloth in blue or orange with woven side panels in black. Premium models are similarly equipped, but also offer the option of woven pattered cloth in red with black, leather-like side panels. The car is now one of the largest models in the A segment thanks to an enlarged wheelbase (up 5mm to 2,385mm) which allows for a longer, wider bodyshell providing one of the roomiest cabins in its class. Further cabin space has been created by moving the car’s gearbox forward by 25mm. Front seat occupants have 40mm more legroom, as well as 16mm additional shoulder room (1,306mm) and a generous 1,008mm of headroom. The car carries more equipment throughout the range, including steering wheel-mounted cruise control with adjustable speed limiter, heated leather

steering wheel and front seats, hill assist control, Smart key with engine start/stop button, LED running lights, as well as full automatic climate control. Mid-specification models include front and rear power windows, remote central locking and a height adjustable driver’s seat. Even base models feature a generous standard of specification, including central locking, trip computer, daytime running lights and a full complement of active and passive safety equipment. The New Generation i10 features two highly-developed petrol engines driving the front wheels through five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearboxes. The 1.0-litre and 1.25-litre powerplants both belong to Hyundai Motor’s popular ‘Kappa‘ engine family and incorporate a range of advanced technical features that raise power and torque, and enhance smoothness and driveability.

The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder powerplant has a power output of 66ps from its 998cc capacity. Maximum power is produced at 5,500rpm, 700rpm earlier than in Original i10, while peak torque of 69lb.ft (94Nm) is available from 3,500rpm. The New Generation i10, with this engine and manual transmission, can travel from standstill to 62mph in 14.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 96mph. Active safety features such as electronic stability control (ESC) and vehicle stability management (VSM) are fitted as standard for the first time on an A-segment car from Hyundai Motor, as is a tyre pressure monitoring system. The range begins with the new S trim, RRP £7,995, but for a limited period Dingles Hyundai Norwich is offering this model from just £6,995. The offer is available until September 30, 2016.

mazda mx-5 icon When Mazda launched its

original MX-5 sports model it could hardly have foreseen how successful this car would be. In reviving memories of small sportsters of the past, such as the Triumph Spitfire and Austin-Healey Sprite, the MX-5 eventually reached iconic status. How appropriate, then, that the special edition of the all-new MX-5 range should be called the Icon – and this 2016 version is the fourth to wear this special badge. The car made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and joined Mazda’s award-winning sports car line up from August 1. The Icon is based on the 131ps SE-L Nav and is the first special edition fourthgeneration MX-5 with the 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G engine.

There is a choice of free-of-charge Meteor Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent paint, and the £20,995 on-the-road Icon is marked out by its contrasting design cues and enhanced standard equipment. Visually, the Icon makes a bold statement with its Soul Red Metallic wing mirrors, rear spoiler, side stripe decals and front skirt. The unique look is further boosted by 16-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels, while the increased equipment tally also includes black leather seats, rear parking sensors, dusk-sensing lights and rain-sensing wipers. Previous MX-5 Icon special editions were sold in the UK in 2000, 2005 and 2007 – and the latest Icon, like its predecessors, is a striking sports car with an achievable price, and limited to just 600 cars available to order now. Pre-order is also open on the all-new Mazda MX-5 RF ahead of its arrival in dealerships next year, and with limited supply in the opening months, fans of the latest incarnation of MX-5 should register their interest now to be one of the lucky few to take delivery of early versions of the Retractable Fastback, a car that represents the next chapter in the MX-5 success story. The all-new Mazda MX-5 range has already won several awards. It is the lightest MX-5 since the original, and is shorter, lower and wider than the car it replaced. With the smallest overhangs and lowest centre of gravity yet, it produces driving pleasure in an unmistakably contemporary and dynamic way. With

perfect 50:50 weight distribution and more technology than ever before, the all-new MX-5 should maintain Mazda’s dominance in this sector. Featuring Mazda’s award-winning SKYACTIV technology, the all-new MX-5’s ultra-efficient petrol engines and lightweight chassis ensure new levels of performance and economy. Agility and driver engagement is unmatched, while at the same time the latest MX-5 meets ever-increasing safety requirements and delivers substantially improved refinement. With the one-millionth MX-5 having rolled down the production line on April 22, 2016, the car continues to win the hearts of drivers across the globe. This landmark car was built at Ujina Plant No.1 in Hiroshima on April 22. The one millionth MX-5 rolled down the line 27 years after Mazda began manufacturing the MX-5, which still holds the Guinness World Record for the bestselling two-seater sports car of all time. To celebrate the historic landmark, and to thank fans and owners the world over, the one-millionth car is appearing at fan events around the globe, including the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Joining the one-millionth MX-5 in Sussex this summer were the Mazda MX-5 Speedster and Spyder concept cars. Having wowed sports car fans at the 2015 SEMA Tuning Show in Las Vegas, the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed was the first time these unique MX-5 based concepts were seen outside of North America.

“I train incredibly hard all year every year with the focus on making improvements every year. It’s not about the amount of time you have in the water, it’s how you use your time in the water”

5 minutes with

Jessica-Jane Applegate International swimmer and Paralympic gold medallist JessicaJane Applegate MBE will be in Rio this September competing in the Paralympic Games. She talked to Places&Faces® just before she headed out to Brazil Are you looking forward to going to Rio? Yes, I cannot wait to get out there. Although it has come around quickly and I could probably do with a couple more months of preparation but what will be will be! Are you nervous? At the moment I am really excited but on race day I will be scared, feel nervous and sick, but I know everyone else will, too, and once the buzzer goes it’s too late! Have you undertaken extra training for the Paralympics? I train incredibly hard all year every year with the focus on making improvements every year. It doesn’t entail extra hours, just different session plans. It’s not about the amount of time you have in the water, it’s how you use your time in the water. Who will be going to Rio with you? I will be travelling up to London at the end of August and this is where I will meet with the rest of the Para swimmers. We will stay there together and have a few days of training together, completing any media sessions and going through our final plans. This part of the journey is very important as we will learn all about the Paralympic Village etcetera and hopefully if any problems have occurred during the Olympics they will be fixed by the time we fly out. Unfortunately, my coach isn’t part of the Great British team so he won’t be allowed poolside or in the Village but he is going out to watch and will be meeting up with me when I am allowed out. I would love my family to come out, but sadly it is really expensive and they just cannot afford it and I understand that. 146

When will you be flying out to Brazil and where will you stay? We fly out on August 31 and move straight into the Paralympic Village. The block of apartments will house the whole of Great Britain’s Paralympic team. Each apartment is made up of two twin rooms and one single – I am hoping for a single room but it depends on how it works out. I also need a bed extension as I’m tall, so it will depend on that, too, and also the single room has no window! When will your races take place and can we watch you on TV? There are 66 hours of live coverage of the Paralympics being shown on Channel 4 – that’s the most hours ever screened for a Paralympic Games. The Railway Tavern on Station road in Belton (NR31 9AA) will be showing all my races and is welcoming anyone along to join in the carnival atmosphere. I am also in the Channel 4 Superhumans advert, literally for a split second, but I am definitely in it swimming and shouting: ‘Yes I can!’ The opening ceremony is on Wednesday, September 7 and I will race in the S14 100m Backstroke on Thursday, September 8; S14 200m Freestyle on Sunday, September 11; S14 100m Breaststroke on Wednesday, September 14 and S14 200m Individual Medley on Saturday, September 17. Will you get to see any of the other competitors? Because I race on the very first day and the very last day, I will not see anything other than the Paralympic Village and the pool. Is there anything that you'd like to add? I am really excited about being spoiled by Fusion Hair and Beauty Consultants Ltd down Gorleston High Street. They are treating me to something really special just before I fly out to Rio and Zoe, one of the hair colourists, is experimenting so it could be anything! They have really looked after me as having chlorine in your hair for 20 hours a week isn’t great! I’d also like to give a massive thanks to everyone who has supported me over the last four years from London 2012 to Rio 2016 and a special thanks to Bradwell Butchery for keeping me supplied with high quality protein. I have been quite poorly over the last few months and ended up having an operation which effected six weeks of my training schedule, but I am still very determined to get out there and do East Anglia proud.

Please feel free to: Like my Facebook page: Jessica Jane Applegate MBE Follow me on Twitter: @jessica_jane96 Follow me on Instagram: jessicajaneapplegate Take a look at my website: www.jessicajaneapplegate.com These will hopefully be updated throughout the Paralympic Games with behind the scenes pictures and results (I may not be in a position to reply to messages, but I will do my best).
