We’re constantly glued to screens these days, whether our smart phones or tablets, laptops or TVs. News of whatever’s happening in the world reaches us in seconds, along with images, comments and film footage of the events in question. So it should be no surprise, really, that, in addition to the actual printed version of Places & Faces®, our online edition – downloadable at: www.placesandfaces.co.uk and on www.issuu.com – is gaining more and more readers, too. We have almost 6,000 followers on Twitter – @PlacesandFaces – and regularly re-tweet news from the people and companies that we follow too. But we were all amazed by the take-up of a particular post about last month’s magazine which had Sir Roger Moore on the front. The tweet – @PlacesandFaces @sirrogermoore is our fab November cover star, see the stunning 5 page feature in your favourite free #Norfolk mag pic.twitter.com/jb2soE19IB – was re-tweeted by Sir Roger Moore himself to his 59,000 followers and was seen by over 18,000 Twitter users! Over 1,100 of them interacted with it and plenty clicked through to read the full, five-page feature online. This just goes to show the power of social media and how important it is to include it in the marketing mix these days. So if you’ve got an event coming up that we ought to be aware of, please follow us @PlacesandFaces on Twitter and let us know. Naturally, this kind of interaction is also great news for our advertisers, as in addition to readers seeing their lovely adverts in the magazine, thousands more are also viewing them online. Personally, I still love to sit down with a cup of coffee and a magazine rather than try to read it on my phone, but I can definitely see the merits of being able to view it anywhere and am doing my best to tweet things that could be of interest. Strictly star Ed Balls turned on the Norwich Christmas Lights last month, for example, and danced Gangnam Style in front of City Hall – now that was definitely worth a tweet!

W

hat is your role in Aladdin? I’m the Spirit of the Ring – I start off as the cleaner and then the girl who’s meant to be playing it gets stuck on the Acle Straight so they ask me if I’ll take over the role which, of course, I do, reluctantly. But there is a surprise at the end of the pantomime as well, involving me, if people stay for the whole two hours (it’s only a two-hour show including a 20-minute break).

Are you looking forward to it? I am – it’s two shows a day and we do 42 shows, so I look forward to it with trepidation – will I be fit enough? And not get what they call ‘Panto Throat’. I sing it in as well, and you can end up losing your voice. The only day we have off is Christmas Day, that’s it – we work all the way through. It is hard work, but as other members of the cast are considerably younger, I say to them: ‘If I can do it, you can!’ It’s hard graft and you need your strength, but it is great fun, of course. For me it’s Christmas really; I’ve done pantomime for 40-plus years, so it just is Christmas for me. You also co-host The Mustard Show, write a newspaper column and are a director of Radio Norwich – how do you juggle it all? Well, I take time off from Mustard and the column to do the pantomime – usually, once I go into Panto Land, that’s it; with two shows a day, you can’t really do anything else and it’s like being in a completely different world. What you do have to be, and I am fortunate in that I am, I suppose, is very organised, with Christmas on top of it – there’s cards, there’s gifts, there’s all the Christmassy things. I get everything organised early, you have to really. Do you stay in Gorleston during panto season? I’ve got some friends who’ve got a house there and my sister lives there now in Gorleston, so I stay on and off – I commute or stay, it depends. Sometimes the weather can be really dreadful and that Acle Straight can be appalling. Pantomime – you can’t be late – we do children’s shows at 10.30 in the morning – well, I’ll leave at 7. Can you tell us about the children’s shows? They’ve all sold out actually and that is lovely, we get all these schools in, and it’s fantastic, because it’s the end of term for the schools and it’s a marvellous time for the children to let off a bit of steam. What do you do on Christmas Day? Fortunately Paul sorts out Christmas Day, which is the only day I have off, because I’m back again [doing the pantomime] on Boxing Day. We don’t actually do anything, what family I’ve got left we have round in the morning and a few friends, and we don’t go anywhere or do anything, because I’m just tired really. But Paul, bless him, Paul Barnes, he organises food and everything. And will that be with close family? Yes, all I’ve got is my sister actually, my sister and nephew and his wife and their daughter, I’m a great aunt (I don’t have any children), so yes… just my sister and family. Does Paul still do his radio show, The Late Paul Barnes Show, on BBC Radio Norfolk? Yes, this year, he’s actually doing his radio show, so Boxing Day, I’m off to a pantomime and he’s doing his radio show, as Boxing Day is a Saturday, so we’ll both be working this Christmas.

helen mcdermott Back to the pantomime, why would you recommend Aladdin? Well, we do what we call: ‘The Toilet Test’ with our shows – if some of the young children don’t have to keep going to the toilet, then we know we have a success! It keeps their attention. It’s a traditional pantomime, a chance for children who perhaps have never been to a show before to come along and see live theatre and to be part of it. At the end we get some people up on stage. And also the theatre is wonderful, in that you sit on chairs at tables and you can have a drink while you’re watching; it’s an Edwardian theatre and if the children do want to get up and move around, they can because they’re not in rows. It’s just wonderful seeing the children joining in and they seem to automatically be born knowing that when you say: ‘Oh yes it is!’ they immediately know: ‘Oh no it isn’t!’ and ‘It’s behind you!’ And we have a ghosty scene and the song sheet at the end and all these traditions which get passed down through generations and it is lovely as all the family can come and enjoy it. We’ve got great costumes, music, scenery and Aladdin is a good story – people know Aladdin. It’s a lovely, warm, intimate theatre – we take about 360. Are you part of OhYesItIz Productions? Yes, it’s a company I formed with Des Barrit, who’s a national theatre player. We met at the Norwich Theatre Royal – he was playing the Dame and also director, and I was in it. And we formed the company to encourage local children to come to the pantomime and to get used to live theatre, but also to give a chance for local professional actors to be in a show. And it’s directed by Des, who’s very, very experienced, and quite scary in many respects! Having worked in TV, radio and print, which do you prefer? I think TV as I’ve done it for longer and I’m more comfortable with that. I’ve now been in TV since I was 18 when I first got my job and I’m 62, so it’s a lot of years and it’s what I’ve always known. Out of all of it really, though, I suppose what I always wanted to do was to be in the theatre. TV’s been great, because it’s given me a very good living and radio I enjoyed although I found it very difficult because now you have to operate all the equipment… but theatre has always been my first love, but whether I’d get a chance now to star in the West End… I think that’s highly unlikely, don’t you?! Do you get on well with Darren Eadie, your co-host on The Mustard Show? Oh very well – and I’m also working with Nick Conrad now. I’m with Darren on a Monday and then Nick on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Darren is a very nice chap, as indeed is Nick, they’re both lovely and we do have a really good time, we laugh a lot – I honestly didn’t think we’d get on as well as we did because I hate football with a vengeance! You’re still probably best known for your time on Anglia TV – do you still get asked about the puppet, BC? Amazingly, yes – ‘Where is BC?’ As far as I know, the real BC is in the East Anglian Archive, probably hanging up somewhere, which is where I’ll be eventually! Yes, he was getting too big for his boots, so he had to go – he became a bit of a diva and was asking for too much money! You have interviewed lots of famous people – who have you most enjoyed meeting? One of the nicest people was Harry Secombe – he was absolutely lovely. I went to his house and he was charming. Ricky Tomlinson from The Royle Family – I did a video with him for charity. And he was lovely, very funny as you would expect, and also very nice and very sympathetic – we were doing it for Assisted Technology, and he was charming as well. Who would you still you like to interview? I think Dame Judi Dench, I’d quite like to meet her – because of her theatre work and because I think she’s got a naughty side! I would have loved to have interviewed Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, it would have been my absolute dream to have been in a film with them – if I could ever go back, please let me go back and be in a film with them, where I could dance with Fred Astaire! I trained as a ballet dancer, but the thought of musical theatre with tap and ballet – I wouldloved to have done that. I’d like to do singing in the rain with Gene Kelly – if I could have been a puddle, that would have been very nice!

worth every

penny The new production at the Noël Coward Theatre in London is receiving rave reviews. Book your tickets for Half a Sixpence now, advises our West End critic, Benet Catty

alf a Sixpence is a total pleasure. Warm hearted, witty, romantic, touching, beautifully acted and sung and brilliantly danced. There's nothing not to like. It is the best musical of 2016. In many ways this should hold no surprise. The original was a big hit for Tommy Steele in 1963. This revival has already been acclaimed for its tryout in Chichester. And the creative team is led by Cameron Mackintosh, Julian Fellowes and songwriters George Stiles and Anthony Drewe who had such a big international hit with Mary Poppins 12 years ago (now touring the UK). Half a Sixpence was originally a star vehicle for the man with the teeth Tommy Steele in 1963. Sixteen of the score's 17 songs by David Heneker were sung by him. It was effectively a one-man show with a cast of 20. Now Stiles and Drewe have done what they did for Mary Poppins, re-crafting and embellishing the bits that work, cutting the bits that don't, and adding lots more songs of their own. As Stiles notes in the programme: "There's hardly a bar we haven't interfered with in some way". The wit and warmth of the new songs is identifiably theirs. And Julian Fellowes, who wrote Downton Abbey in the period between this and their last collaboration, has written a skillful and charming book very much fashioned from the HG Wells novel rather than a mere tidy-up of the Beverley Cross script. Fellowes knows how to write about class. (As we’ll see in next month’s magazine, his ear for rock-obsessed contemporary American ten-year-olds is rather less adept on Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock.) Arthur Kipps is a well-meaning but down-at-heel young man in the early years of the last century who has had his eye on a well-meaning maid, Ann, since they were teenagers. When he comes into an inheritance from his grandfather things start looking up. He gains the interest of Helen, an attractive young woman of aristocratic heritage, as well as the self-interested approval of a motley crew of dreamers and chancers. But he makes an odd fit amongst the upper crust, 24

WEST END REVIEW

half a sixpence

as you would if you spoke like the Artful Dodger and found yourself amongst the cast of High Society. But, as so often in life, circumstances change and he changes with them. If you don't like musicals in which people learn the value of being true to themselves then you probably shouldn't be going to musicals at all. Kipps is played by Charlie Stemp, here getting his first West End lead and making his career with it. He is funny, charming and handsome and is an effortless dancer. He is ably supported by Devon-Elise Johnson as Ann and by the West End regular Emma Williams, most recently seen in the under-rated Mrs Henderson Presents and who first made her name as Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 16 years ago opposite Michael Ball. She's joined by a fellow Mrs Henderson fugitive, Ian Bartholomew, who is just as charming and well sung as he always is. It's hard to believe he was Uncle Ernie in The Who's Tommy 20 years ago. Perhaps the ingredient that distinguishes Half a Sixpence most is Andrew Wright's choreography. There are as many dance sequences to be found here as in any current West End musical and he gives them all great wit and pizzazz. The opening number of the second half, Pick Out a Simple Tune, in which Kipps' enthusiasm for his banjo encourages a party of poshos to let their hair down and accompany him on cutlery, is an absolute dazzler. Fans of show dance may notice that one of the central passages is from Bob Fosse's Crunchy Grinola Suite and another in the same number is a re-boot of Susan Stroman's work on I Got Rhythm. Even so, it is as good a dance number as I've seen in any musical this decade. Despite running two hours 45 minutes (on the long side for a musical comedy) director Rachel Kavanaugh ensures that the interest and pace never let up. Lots of characters have their own moments, subplots weave in and out of each other; there's no sense of it being the original one-man vehicle and it is never self-indulgent. It has the efficiency and value for money that is the hallmark of its producer Cameron Mackintosh. Few would bet that it'll have a run to match the three decades apiece of The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, but it deserves to be the hit that his last new musical, Betty Blue Eyes (also with Stiles and Drewe) disappointingly fell short of. This is a smashing night out. West End tickets are so expensive these days but this Sixpence is worth every pound. Half A Sixpence is at the NoÍl Coward Theatre on St Martin’s Lane, London, WC2N 4AU. spilling the

Beans As Wayne Sleep prepares to lead the cast in the Norwich Theatre Royal festive pantomime, Mark Nicholls discovers there’s a new side to the former Royal Ballet star

here’s a new twinkle in the eyes of Wayne Sleep, and it’s all about the prospect of being the pantomime bad guy. The world-renowned dancer and choreographer is looking forward to adding a new dimension to his repertoire by starring as the villainous Phineas P Stinkworthy in Jack and the Beanstalk. “I’ve always been a Buttons-type character, cheeringup the kids or comforting Cinderella,” he tells me. “But this year I’m going to be FRIGHTENING the hell out of them… and I hope to do a very good job of it indeed.” His appearance at the Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday, December 13 to Sunday, January 15 marks a return to the city’s panto spotlight for Wayne after previously starring in Goldilocks and the Three Bears in 1984 and Aladdin in 1987. “This is actually the first time I have really played a ‘baddie’ in pantomime,” he adds. “But I won’t be too evil, so we are not going to frighten the children entirely because they might never come back to the theatre again!” Having appeared in more than 20 pantomimes, including as the genie of the ring alongside Priscilla Presley in Milton Keynes last year, he said: “The appeal of

this role was simple; the opportunity of doing something new, something I had not done before. “But I always love being in panto, Christmas is not the same for me without it. And it is great to be back in Norwich. It has always had a reputation for doing pantomimes brilliantly and very traditionally; the writers always keep to the story and let it flow – so many pantos today fail to follow the storylines and have a cast which is on their own ego trip, but it is all about entertaining the audience.” Jack and the Beanstalk will again feature some familiar stars of the Theatre Royal panto in Richard Gauntlett and Ben Langley, who will be joined by David Burlinn taking on the role of Jack Trottalot, and the part of Joleyn Hiccup being played by Mira Ormala. The show will also mark the return of David Gant to the panto cast as the Sheriff, Phil Hiccup. Wayne is thrilled at the prospect of being the “baddie” among them and enjoying the way the panto develops over its month-long run. “The great thing about pantomime is that it can always be different,” he said. “The audience is different with every performance, but you still have a great responsibility to give a tip top performance for every show. “Sometimes things go wrong, though you should never make it go wrong, but if it works and makes the audience laugh, then keep it in.” In the last few months, Wayne, 68, has been busy running dance workshops across the UK with Dame Beryl Grey – prima ballerina with Sadler’s Wells (now the Royal) Ballet from 1941 to 1957 – through which he continues to pass on his knowledge and passion. He also works to raise money for the Wayne Sleep Foundation, which provides scholarships to talented young people to further their dance and theatre training. 30

Dancer, choreographer and I’m A Celebrity… jungle competitor, Wayne won a Leverhulme Scholarship to the Royal Ballet School aged 13 and five years later joined the Royal Ballet Company and soon became a Senior Principal Dancer, despite his diminutive stature at only five feet two inches tall. In 1980, he formed his own company DASH, where the concept was to present dance to a wider audience using a mix of styles including ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary. More recently, he has appeared in a wide range of TV and stage shows which, along with I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, include Celebrity Come Dine With Me and four Royal Variety Performances. West End acting credits have included Puck (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Ariel (The Tempest), Mr Mistofeles (Cats) and the Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as well as choreographing a number of stage shows. He also famously danced with his close friend Princess Diana at the Royal Opera House in December 1985, was awarded the OBE in 1998, and is a patron of the Royal Ballet Organisation. But throughout 2015 and into 2016, events have taken a new turn. Having been diagnosed, and treated, for prostate cancer, he joined fellow celebrities Miriam Margolyes, Sylvester McCoy, Bobby George, Patti Boulaye and Jan Leeming in The Real Marigold Hotel – a real-life take on the recent films - where the cast was challenged to see if they could enjoy a better retirement in India. When I spoke to Wayne, in a small window in his packed schedule, he had just returned from Florida and was about to head off to Tokyo to film part of a Christmas special which was the follow up to The Real Marigold Hotel programmes. Despite jet-lag weariness, his blue eyes were piercing against a tanned façade as he spoke about how the series had transformed his outlook. “I loved it, it was a most wonderful experience, a travel show with a difference, living with real Indian families rather than staying in big hotels,” he said. “We met local people all the time and that was just so interesting.” From Jaipur, his journey had taken him to Agra and Varanasi and aroused a love of India that only those who are smitten enjoy – firing a desire to return and explore further. “I’m hoping to go back and go down to Kerala,” he revealed, “to do a retreat and find out about all of the things in life that I have never done before. “I have always been a fast-laner, my career has always been fast forward but now I want to go to somewhere that I can contemplate life and in India I have found a place where I can do that.” But before that, Wayne Sleep has to perfect a slightly meaner streak as he pirouettes his way into the villainous world of Phineas P Stinkworthy. Jack and The Beanstalk runs from Tuesday, December 13, to Sunday, January 15. Tickets are £7 to £23.50 with under-threes free. To book, visit www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01603 630000. 31

Claire said: “Diamonds make a wonderful, timeless gift and, of course, add a bit of festive sparkle. As the rarest and most precious of stones, there is nothing quite like being given the gift of diamonds. Christmas is also a wonderful time of year to get engaged so we have lots of interest in engagement rings.” Brilliant white cut diamonds are still the most popular but Aurum also stocks a large variety of cuts and colours and has found that chocolate diamonds have been particularly popular this year. Aurum has also recently started stocking the ‘Clair de Lune’ collection of rings by award-winning British designer Andrew Geoghegan. “This French-inspired design gives the illusion of a diamond being held between two crescent moons, making it a mesmerising and captivating ring, which is available in diamond, sapphire and ruby and in a choice of precious metals. Matching diamond set wedding bands are also available to complete the set,” added Claire. With new products from all designers, highlights on offer at Aurum this year include the British-designed Cornerstone Collection, a new range of men’s silver Buddha to Buddha bracelets and stunning pieces and cutting edge designs from Decho Echo. The jewellers will also have new collections from Italian fine jewellery designers Marco Bicego and Annmaria Cammilli in 18ct gold. Claire said: “The New Masai Collection from Marco Bicego is absolutely stunning. Inspired by the ornaments of the African Masai Tribe, this beautiful range of 18ct yellow and white gold and diamond jewellery is hand-made in Italy using the Corda di Chitarra range of jewellery.” But a growing number of customers are also seeking out antique, vintage, or pre-owned jewellery. This is an area in which Zelley Jewellers from the city’s St Giles Street specialises.

Alistair Zelley explained that the antique jewellery they offer is predominantly from the late Victorian period with vintage items from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 1950s. “I think the whole appeal of antique jewellery, as well as the age of it, is the quality,” he said. “Modern jewellery tends to be imported and quite light in weight, but the older pieces were heavier and also not necessarily designed to wear every day, they were more special occasion pieces. “We tend to sell mainly gold rings and heavy gold bracelets from this period and Art Deco jewellery from the 1920s and 1930s is very much in vogue, along with our selection of Fabergé jewellery. “Our customers favour genuine older pieces of jewellery, something that has already stood the test of time. Jewellery workshops of the past would have had 50 to 60 people working in them and, as a result, each piece of jewellery would be slightly different and have the individuality people are now looking for. “But above all, the appeal of older jewellery is that people feel they are getting very good value for money.” Gifts already proving popular from Zelley’s in the run-up to Christmas include antique rings and vintage watches, with diamond-studded earrings also likely to find their way into a festive stocking. Zelley’s also produces a number of commissioned pieces and has a goldsmith working on site. Alistair added: “For Christmas, people are looking for something a little bit different, which is why they are going for the Art Deco pieces that you would generally not see in a High Street jewellery shop.” The business was established by his great grandfather Frederick John Zelley in Bishop’s Stortford in 1886 and his family still run the shop there as well as a branch in Sudbury. His grandfather Claude moved to Norwich in the 1950s and that shop in St Giles Street is now run by Alistair and his father. Zelley Jewellers also stocks more modern, pre-owned items that may only be two or three years old and also has new items of jewellery for sale. Whether it is antique jewellery, a brand new diamond ring or a bespoke necklace or bracelet, diamonds are guaranteed to add sparkle to your festive fun.

WHAT’S ON

eating out in norwich

W

e perhaps unconsciously look at enjoying a meal with a more considered view at Christmas. We look for something special; in fact, many elements need to marry to create a wonderful, seasonal “event”. For many, Christmas evokes a need for getting together. Television ads are full of family get-togethers; everyone talking over each other, tucking into huge platefuls of steaming winter food. Festive films and shows present romantic, softly-lit meals whilst groups of friends gather for casual lunches and fun nights out around a big table. Norwich is a lively and festive, atmospheric city to enjoy all of the above and more. This is a cosmopolitan hub with a diverse choice of places to eat day and night; small and large eateries; pubs, cafés and restaurants. Norwich is also a city with an ever-evolving high standard food offer with restaurateurs constantly reinventing themselves and new venues opening on almost a weekly basis. The Norwich Lanes is a hotbed for stylish, intimate places to eat and drink. The Iron House in Pottergate is a great example of a restaurant expanding its horizons. Its recently-added bar, set against an exposed brick wall, looks like it’s been there forever. Everyone is positively encouraged to meet here for a drink before heading out and it’s a lovely place to enjoy a pre-meal tipple before settling down at a table for lunch or dinner. Still in the Norwich Lanes, Bishop’s Dining Room and Wine Bar is another welcoming small restaurant with a bar. Styled in whites and nudes, it’s understated, relaxed, European elegance at its best. Bishop’s is a lunchtime choice for the girls but equally appealing for couples and larger groups. As night falls, soak up a candlelit, intimate atmosphere with tables covered in crisp, white tablecloths. The local produce menu includes dishes such as roasted partridge with chestnut mushrooms; butter poached fillet of hake with chick pea, tomato and saffron casserole; and warming stem ginger and treacle tart.

Norwich Cathedral Quarter is one of the most historic parts of the city with Tombland being home to a cluster of restaurants. The newest kid on the block, the playfully-named Giggling Squid, is a great Thai restaurant (see the full review on pages 52 and 53). The business started in 2002 by husband and wife team Pranee and Andy Laurillard from humble beginnings in Brighton, a restaurant in a tiny fisherman’s cottage, which remains there today. Lunch is fragrant Thai tapas with a mix of traditional and well known plates; try sleeping honey duck and prawn salad with spicy lemon dressing; in the evening dip into ‘DIY Bundles’ and ‘Seafood Streetfood’. Keeping with a street food theme, Namaste India is a tiny, bustling canteen-style vegetarian restaurant in Opie Street (with regular queues out of the door). Whether you’re veggie or not, grab a table! The food is tasty and it’s hard to choose from the menu, so I recommend allowing your waiter to choose for you. Namaste recently branched out, opening a new, larger restaurant – Namaste Village, on Queens Road – perfect for that big group of friends that previously would have squeezed into the Opie Street alternative! Returning to Virginia Woolf, your dining experience must be a good one to be able to think, love and sleep well. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the combined service, ambience, company and conversation too. When it all comes together it’s the most delightful dining and Norwich, in my view, is one of the most delightful cities in which to enjoy it. THAI

urant Giggling Squid New Norwich Thai resta od that’s bound to fo is serving fabulous festive kins previews some At produce a smile. Carolyn as dishes on offer of the delicious Christm When I look back on my trip to Thailand – many

years ago – plenty of things stand out: the amazing beaches, attractive temples, wonderful weather, fabulous markets and great hospitality, but the highlight of them all was definitely the food. With its attractive presentation, delicious herbs and spices and use of indigenous produce such as lemon grass and coconut milk, Thai food is, in fact, my favourite food of all and, done well, is probably the best cuisine there is. So it was fascinating to hear that a new, quirkily-named Thai restaurant, Giggling Squid, has opened in Norwich and that the dishes on offer include many of this attractive country’s famous staples, such as grilled chicken satay with peanut sauce, Thai green curry and, my favourite, Pad Thai. Set on Tombland in the Norwich Cathedral Quarter, Giggling Squid occupies the two-storey, Grade II-listed premises that were previously home to La Tasca, and the new restaurant has plenty of space, thanks to a roomy ground floor and a much bigger upstairs that is perfect for Christmas parties. With plenty of wood panelling, a wooden floor and some attractive, flower-filled trellises and windowsills, this 160-seater restaurant is impressive, pleasant and welcoming and when we visited, on a wet Wednesday evening in November, the greeting was warm and genuine, and the

cheery, bright interior made a welcome change from the wet and windy, cold weather outside. We were there to try the Christmas menus and lucky enough to have a sneak preview of what will be available at the restaurant over the festive season - from November 24 to December 26 inclusive (closed on Christmas Day itself ) - with the menus available to view online at: www.gigglingsquid.com. The Norwich venue is one of 17 Giggling Squids around the country, which are owned by husband and wife team Andrew and Pranee Laurillard who named the company after the nickname of one of their three children. On the launch of the new Norwich site, Pranee commented: “We’ve had our eye on Norwich for a while now. It’s clear that there’s a vibrant, buzzing food scene, and we think our fresh take on Thai cuisine will go down really well. We’ve just been waiting for the right location to come up.” The premises are certainly impressive, located just 200 yards from Norwich Cathedral and boasting an attractive central staircase and ornate windows, as well as some interesting mirrors and a book-filled snug area upstairs. There’s also a large outdoor area which will open when the warmer weather returns next spring. But back to the festive season and there are two Christmas evening menus, one at £24.95 and another at £29.95, along with a tapas-style Christmas lunch menu (served until 5.30pm) at £18.95. The first evening menu includes prawn crackers on arrival, a starter, main course and dessert, while the second option also includes a glass of Giggling Christmas Spritz. Both of the evening menus looked appealing, but we decided to go for the second one as, having looked at the dishes on offer, there were a few on the £29.95 menu that particularly caught our eye.

giggling squid I started with Prawn Tom Kha – a creamy soup made from coconut milk, Thai herbs, mushrooms and chilli - while my husband, Miles, chose the duck spring rolls; both were prettily presented on pre-heated plates and looked and smelt inviting. The fact that both starters disappeared very quickly speaks volumes and we were soon looking forward to our next course – sautéed salt and pepper prawns for me and grilled sirloin steak wok-fried with fresh garlic and chilli and basil sauce for Miles. Both dishes came with rice and four different varieties were offered - jasmine, sticky, egg fried or coconut - with the portions served in bowls on the side. My salt and pepper prawns were hot, salty and very tasty, while Miles enjoyed his steak, although the copious amount of red chillies rendered the dish a little too hot for his liking (we discovered later that customers can ask for their dishes to be as mild or as spicy as they like, so we'll know that for next time). The steak was also very hot temperature-wise, arriving sizzling at the table in a foil-lined dish, and again we were pleased to find that our plates had been warmed through beforehand for maximum effect. Thailand isn’t known for its desserts, but Giggling Squid has got a good choice, with Miles opting for caramelised mango cake with vanilla ice cream, while I chose two unusual flavours from the ice cream and sorbet selection: the rather subtle black sesame ice cream, which is exclusive to the Giggling Squid chain, and the refreshing lemon grass and basil sorbet. We sat downstairs by the one of the windows and our section was busy with a variety of customers; some clearly business people and others simply friends and family treating themselves to a night out. All of the food was attractive but, unexpectedly, the pièce de résistance was, in fact, the tea. There were a number of different types of tea on offer as well as a wide choice of coffee, but I chose the intriguing-sounding Flora “Flowering” tea (£3.50) – hand-made lotus flower and jasmine green tea which arrived in a clear glass teapot with a bulb on the side. We were instructed to place the bulb in the teapot and to leave it for a few minutes without stirring – the bulb then opened to produce a flower which flavoured the water slightly, resulting in a subtly-flavoured, cleansing sort of tea. All the dishes are freshly prepared in the kitchen by talented Thai chefs and the fabulous flavours reminded me of my time in this fascinating Far Eastern country. Giggling Squid is good value and, as it’s located in the heart of Norfolk, now we don’t have to travel quite so far to satisfy our demand for authentic Thai food!

ADVICE FROM ARTHUR HOWELL: BEAT THE LAST MINUTE CHRISTMAS PANIC – ORDER YOUR TURKEY NOW!

as lots of nice, fresh straw underfoot. But remember, you need to order your turkey NOW to ensure you get a bird that’s the right size for your oven. The average 12lb turkey will feed 10 people (you should allow around 1lb of meat per person for Christmas lunch). The best turkeys are those which have been hung for between a week and 10 days before being dressed and refrigerated for the oven. Always buy your turkey from a traditional butcher or turkey producer, and when you place your order, ask them to remove the wishbone as this will make carving it much easier. Ask for the giblets as well because you can use them to make turkey gravy. But remember to remove them from the bird prior to cooking! ROASTED QUAIL LEGS IN HONEY served with mascarpone and crispy kale Our talented French chef Franck Pontais shows us how to make some delicious different canapés, ideal for impressing your guests at Christmas-time! MAKES SIX CANAPÉS

INGREDIENTS

For the quail: six quail legs; 1tbsp Acacia honey; 2 tbsps mascarpone; 6 butternut squash peelings; 1 tsp parsley oil (see below); 1 tsp olive oil; few leaves salad cress; few leaves kale; 2 pinches table salt; 1 pinch ground white pepper For the parsley oil: blitz together a teaspoon of chopped, fresh parsley and two tablespoons of olive oil.

METHOD 1. Get the quail legs from your butcher and ask him to remove the first bone of each leg, leaving only the “end bone”. 2. Dry off the kale in a very slow oven at 80C for at least one hour or fry it in vegetable oil if you prefer. 3. Marinade the quail legs for an hour with the honey, olive oil and seasoning. 4. Take some peelings from the butternut squash (or carrot or parsnip if you prefer) and roast them in a hot oven, then place on one side. 5. Mix the mascarpone with the teaspoon of parsley oil and season to taste. 6. Cook the quail legs in a hot oven at 190C for eight to 10 minutes. 7. Serve the hot quail legs on the butternut squash peelings with some mascarpone cream and parsley oil, and garnish with the salad cress.

CHrISTMAs STUfFING mIX When it comes to Christmas Day and the cooking of

lunch or dinner, small beads of sweat start to form on the top lip or the base of the back of men and women across the land, myself included. Everyone has amazingly high expectations of me at Christmas time, but on Christmas Day I will be cooking at home rather than at work where I have my incredible team around me to help me pull it all off. Christmas Day lunch or dinner is one of those occasions that is filled with mystery, folklore and old wives’ tales - about putting the turkey in the oven the night before the big day or leaving it outside two days before and so on. Everyone has a story or family tale to tell, but just remember one thing; you will be cooking people’s lunch or dinner just as you do throughout the year with no panic and dramas, so why should Christmas be any different?! My advice is to simply get yourself organised in advance, one to two days before. In the kitchen world we have a thing called “mise en place” which is basically a list of what jobs need to be done in what order and by whom. So sit down with a glass of wine and write your list a week

INGREDIENTS

SERVES 12 HUNGRY ELVES!

(Simply halve the ingredients for fewer guests)

· 1.2 kg sausage meat · 150g diced back fat · 75g chicken liver,

trimmed, cleaned and diced

· 50g chopped,

pre-cooked or raw peeled chestnuts

· 1 tsp French mustard · 5g sea salt

· 1 small shallot, chopped

· 2g white pepper

· 1 clove of garlic, sweated

· 25g chervil

down

· 100g cranberry sauce · 100g breadcrumbs

· 25g parsley · 25g tarragon (all herbs to be finely chopped)

before Christmas Day comes round and then get as much as you can done the day before - that way on the Big Day you can enjoy it as much as everyone else. However, having said all that, I expect I’ll be running around and sweating with the rest of you! Have a great time and don't forget to enjoy yourself – after all, it’s your Christmas too.

METHOD This special stuffing can be put together two to three days before, as long as everything is fresh when it’s made. Place all ingredients for the stuffing into a large bowl and mix well, and then fry a little burger of stuffing off to check for seasoning. Once you have checked that the seasoning is right, lay a large piece of tin foil out on the table and rub it lightly with salted butter. Then place the stuffing on the greased tin foil and shape it into a large, long sausage. Next roll the tin foil around the sausage to make an almost cracker- shaped parcel of Christmas joy!

When ready to cook, pre-heat the oven to 180˚C. Place the roll of stuffing into the oven and bake it for approximately 25mins. Check that it’s cooked through by piercing a cake tester needle through the middle of the sausage - if the juices run clear and the needle is hot to touch, then you are good to go. Again, this can be cooked slightly beforehand and kept warm until needed; when you’re ready to serve, just warm it through in the oven, then remove it from the tin foil and slice it or serve it whole next to your Christmas turkey or other festive meat. 59

The company is producing a range of healthy and environmentally-friendly pizzas, and is partly funded through a crowdfunder supported by the community the company’s pizzas are created to serve. One Planet Pizza will also donate 10 per cent of its profits to charitable organisations as voted for by One Planet Pizza community shareholders. Mike Hill, one of the founders of One Planet Pizza, commented: “Our aim is to become the number one frozen vegan pizza brand in the UK within 12 months and within Europe by 24 months, and to bring the product into mainstream supermarkets, and we want our shareholders, or “veganestas” as we like to think of them, to help us do it.” More info at: www.oneplanetpizza.com

LEADING CHEF IS IN THE PICTURE! Leading chef and Places&Faces® columnist Richard Bainbridge can now offer guests their very own chef’s table thanks to the latest technology. Despite the limitations of a period property, a sophisticated hi-tech TV system from Hughes Home Tech has been installed at Benedicts Restaurant which connects the kitchen to a private dining room on the first floor, enabling Richard and his team to communicate with guests and tell them what’s happening. What’s more, the television used looks just like an ornate Victorian mirror when not in use. Richard Bainbridge said: “Originally we thought the system would only be used by ‘foodies’ who were interested in what was happening in the kitchen. But it has been perfect for presentations during business meetings in the room and even to entertain children during a family get-together!” www.restaurantbenedicts.com

COOKING A TURKEY

Guests coming on Christmas Day?

Then take a look at these top tips for cooking a turkey from Joe Cook at Morton’s Traditional Taste. Based in Skeyton in Norwich, Morton’s Traditional Taste offers farm-fresh, free-range Norfolk Black and Bronze turkeys, with orders now being taken for Christmas! ● First and most importantly – ensure you’ve got enough space in your oven. Forgetting about the sheer size of a 5 to 6kg turkey can leave you redfaced on the all-important day!

● Try cooking your turkey upside down! The Norfolk Black’s slighter higher fat ratio will drip down very nicely, leaving the rest of the turkey perfectly moist, succulent and tender.

● Use a thermometer. Turkey is usually cooked to an internal temperature of 70ºC. However, if you have a dry-plucked, dry-aged, high quality bird, you can cook it at a slightly lower 65ºC without any worries at all. ● Place a selection of vegetables and onions in the bottom of the tray as this will help you in making an excellent turkey-infused gravy with all the juices. ● Fan-assisted ovens have a tendency to dry out meat. Try brining your turkey and covering it in foil to keep it moist and succulent.

● Try slow roasting your turkey over the course of an entire night. You’ll have moist, succulent meat whilst freeing up the oven for more potatoes on the day! ● Give your turkey plenty of time to thaw out at room temperature before you even begin to cook.

● Don’t turn the oven up too high. Crispy turkey is a must have – but in the quest to make the skin nice and crispy over-cooking often happens, and nobody likes dry turkey! ● Before roasting, place your turkey in a bucket of cold water filled with spices, oranges, cinnamon sticks, salt and more. Throw in all sort of herbs and spices. Cover and leave overnight – you won’t be disappointed.

● When ready, baste with hot goose fat mixed with maple syrup – your dinner guests will be delighted. | DECEMBER 2016

Fishing for compliments Simon Wainwright, executive head chef

of The Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth, devises a stunning fish dish for December, which tastes just as good as it looks

Wine Notes NICK MOBBS, director and wine expert at the Imperial Hotel, says:

2013 Chardonnay, Nelson Estate, Paarl, South Africa

Despite the name, this wine does not come from Burnham Thorpe and is a great wine to accompany the salmon. Alan Nelson acquired these farms in 1987 out of a bankrupt estate. Since then, they have been lovingly restored by the Nelson family and their team of dedicated workers.

Between 1987 and 1994 approximately 50 hectares of old vines were replaced under the watchful eye of the best viticulture consultants in the Cape with noble cultivars, including Cabernet Sauvignon; Merlot; Shiraz; Pinotage; Sauvignon Blanc; Chardonnay and Semillon. Between 1993 and 1995, a state-of-the-art wine cellar was constructed.

Wine production commenced in 1995. The next year, the Estate won an award for the Best Chardonnay in South Africa and was in the same year crowned as the Champion Private Wine Producer in the Boland region. Since then the Estate has never looked back. The Estate has become internationally known as Nelson's Creek, named after the Nelson family and the small stream that winds its way through the Estate. The wine is 100 per cent Chardonnay and is ideal to drink now but will age well further for a further three years.

After the grapes were pressed, the juice was left for one hour’s skin contact and then transferred to 100 per cent new French oak barrels. Spontaneous fermentation was conducted in the barrels and the wine was aged for an additional nine months in the barrels. The wine has toasty vanilla aromas together with citrus and dried apricot on the nose. This is a well-balanced wine complemented by buttery flavours on the palate with a light, oaky finish. Classic well-made Chardonnay is possibly my favourite grape when the wine-maker is a skilled craftsman. It is great with this rich salmon dish and works very well with chicken dishes, too.

PAN-FRIED SALMON SIMON WAINWRIGHT, executive head chef of the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth

MUSSELS, SPINACH & LEMONGRASS SAUCE METHOD

OAdd the fish stock and white wine to a medium-sized saucepan, along with the lemongrass (bruise this first with the back of a knife to let the flavour out). Bring the liquid to the boil and reduce it to 150ml, then add the double cream and bring it to the boil again. Sieve the liquid into a clean saucepan and then set aside. Put a large saucepan on the heat and get it very hot. Add the mussels and the splash of white wine, place a lid on the top and then cook the mussels until they are open wide (about three to four minutes). Once cooked, strain the mussels and take the beards out, then reserve the side of the mussel shells which have the mussels attached, set these aside and cool. Heat up a pan that’s big enough to fry four portions of salmon, place the vegetable oil inside and heat this up. Add the salmon, skin-side down, in the pan and season the flesh side of the fish with salt and pepper. After 30 seconds, turn the frying pan down to its lowest setting and cook for four to six minutes to achieve a crispy skin. Meanwhile, put your sauce back on to a heat and reduce it slowly by half. When the salmon skin is crisp, turn the fish and cook it for another four minutes and then let it rest in the pan.

TO FINISH Take the cubes of chilled butter and whisk this into the reduced lemongrass sauce. Add the spinach, season, and then finally add the mussels, making sure they heat through sufficiently. Split the sauce between four plates or bowls and place the salmon on top.

• Prepare the Crab (If you don’t want to do this part you can buy crab meat and use gratin dishes). Split the shell away from the body. Remove the large front claws and reserve, discarding the body and small legs. Remove the dead man’s fingers (gills) from the shell, and remove the face by pushing down gently into the shell until it cracks, ensuring there is no bone left behind. Scrape all the shell meat into a bowl, and place empty shell into boiling water to clean. Using a rolling pin crack the reserved claws, then using a pick, remove every drop of meat you can get, ensuring you don’t collect any of the bony white “feathers”. Add this meat to the shell meat and put to one side. • Warm the Cream, Milk, Paprika and Mustard in a pan and keep on a low heat so it doesn’t boil • In a large pan, melt the butter with a dash of oil (to stop the butter burning). Remove from heat and add the flour and whisk to a smooth paste. Return to low heat and cook paste for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly to avoid any lumps forming. Remove from heat and add warm Cream mixture, Brandy, Sherry, eggs and lovage and whisk until thick. • Stir in crab meat and season with salt and pepper to taste. • Take Crab shells out of the boiling water, ensuring they are clean (you may need to scrape the inside. Wipe dry. Spoon the Newburg mixture into the shells to fill them. • Sprinkle with the goat’s cheese crumbs. Place on a baking tray and bake at 180 for 15 minutes or until the goat’s cheese has melted.

grenada There are top-notch French and Italian restaurants, plus a beachside eaterie and a buffet-style outlet, plus a couple of cafés where pizzas, tea and cakes are available. You don’t go hungry at Sandals! As I said, you don’t have to leave the resort to have a great holiday, but we couldn’t resist getting a more complete view of this beautiful island which is, in a way, a contradiction in terms when you look around. Originally under French control, it was eventually ceded to the British. French and British influences are both evident. Town names like Grenville, St David’s and Hillsborough sit alongside Gouyave and Marquis. We joined an all-day tour offered by the on-site Island Routes company and, via our chatty driver/guide, Campbell, learned a great deal about an island which gained independence from Britain in 1974. Grenada is about the same size as the Isle of Wight, and, despite the attention of hurricanes in recent times, retains a lot of its rainforest. It is particularly famous for nutmeg, and although Hurricane Ivan destroyed about 70 per cent of its trees in 2004, this famous spice is slowly making a comeback. Other spices grown on Grenada include turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and ginger. Grenadians are enthusiastic about the curative properties of many of these herbs; they may be right as many islanders live to a ripe old age and seldom visit a doctor! The big story on Grenada, though, is chocolate, which is marketed via the Grenada Chocolate Company. The island used to export a great deal of cocoa beans but now concentrates on using them to make its superb natural chocolate and exporting that instead. We were able to visit a chocolate-making plant and to sample it at first hand. You can, too, as it’s sold at Waitrose! We also visited the Belmont Estate, a former plantation – a leading centre for the production of cocoa and chocolate, where guests are shown the process from harvesting onwards. Grenada has several spectacular waterfalls and we stopped at one of them, Allendales, where, for a few dollars, there are local “characters” only too glad to jump off the top of the falls for your camera! We were also able to enjoy a great view of the Grand Etang lake, formed in a crater in an extinct volcano, surrounded by lush rainforest. The capital, St George’s, is a bustling and attractive town largely geared, like the rest of the Caribbean, to the cruise ship season which begins in late October. But there are some interesting shops with a good selection of souvenir goods. And if revolutionary prime minister Maurice Bishop remains, even after his death, an inspirational figure to Grenadians, the island is equally proud of its latest hero Kirani James, who won the 400 metres at the 2012 London Olympics. Indeed, Grenada shouts “pride” from every corner. The red, gold and green colours of the national flag are everywhere and, let’s face it, it has plenty to be proud of.

Flights

David Wakefield flew with Virgin Atlantic. There are two flights a week, with a stop at St Lucia, to Grenada, on a Monday and Thursday, until March 23, 2017. After that flights will be on a Monday and Friday.

The food is delicious and the restaurant, which is open from 6pm Monday to Saturday, is a convivial, social hub. Dave is a truly dedicated chef who takes great care of his customers and his team, and it’s this team spirit which extends throughout the hotel, with each guest treated as an individual and looked after throughout their stay, from the moment they check in to the time they reluctantly leave. WinTEr wOnDeRlaNd WITH A LITTLE THOUGHT AND PREPARATION, YOUR GARDEN CAN STILL LOOK GLORIOUS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, ADVISES GARDENING EXPERT ELLEN MARY

There is still time to make sure there is plenty of colour in the garden over Christmas by planting up pots with colourful cyclamen planted amongst trailing ivy. Stand them in pride of place where they can be enjoyed. Jazz up entrances with pots by the front door and on the patio, viewable from the home. They will sparkle with a little dusting of snow. Containers that are not on show should be placed in a sheltered spot close together to protect them from frost damage; make sure you have a good supply of horticultural fleece or bubble wrap should you need to wrap up any external pots and plants in heavy frost. Try not to walk on your lawn especially during a heavy frost or snow to avoid damage to the grass. Spike the area with a garden fork which will improve drainage and aeration. Earthworms can cause problems with lawns and, although they won’t damage the grass, their movement does cause weeds and moss to grow, so it’s a good idea to gently sweep them off the lawn as soon as you can with a coarse broom. 78

Fruit & Vegetables

Wildlife Gardening

Winter is the time of year to plant or renovate dormant fruit canes. Raspberries and blueberries can be planted and old strawberry plants should be replaced if they are over three years old before they stop producing fruits. Apply glue bands to the trunks of fruit trees to stop moths laying their eggs in the branches of the tree which destroy spring blossom. As soon as you have harvested your remaining vegetables, it will be time to dig lots of well-rotted manure or any other organic matter into your soil. If you have your own compost, dig it into the bottom of a trench and allow the worms to redistribute it which will improve your soil over the winter months ready for planting next spring. Grab a mug of hot chocolate, put the fire on and draw up a plan of where you planted your fruit and vegetables this year to ensure good crop rotation for the following growing season. This will prevent pests and diseases. If you don’t have an allotment or space in your garden for fruit and vegetables, you can use pots – don’t feel restricted by lack of space.

The breeding season is over and our garden birds will enjoy the variety of fat balls, seeds, kitchen crumbs and raisins. There are so many different methods of feeding, from feeding trays that can be attached to windows, giving you a closer look at your garden birds, to caged fat ball holders which keep squirrels off the bird food. With so many options you can pick the right one for you and your garden, patio or balcony. Urban gardens are really quite attractive to birds during the cold months because of the warmth in inner cities rather than the exposed countryside, so if you hang up some bird feeders and put out a bird bath you will be amazed at how many birds soon find your offerings. A few colourful pots of plants will also attract insects on which the birds can feed. Shrubs and trees that produce berries such as Cotoneaster and Pyracantha will provide a good source of food for birds in your garden at this time of year. Red and orange berries are particularly attractive to birds, so make sure you leave them as a natural food source for birds and other wildlife.

Truly Outstanding Levington Court – where care is

rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. And that’s official!

Levington Court was recently inspected by the Care Quality Commission and achieved an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating. It is a well-earned endorsement for a scheme that really does go the extra mile in caring for its tenants. Situated in Lowestoft, Levington Court is owned and managed by Orwell Housing Association. Originally opened in the 1980s, it was extended by Orwell in 2004 and now features 58 apartments. All apartments are self-contained, with their own front door, bedroom, lounge, kitchen and shower or bathroom, including a WC. There are a number of flats which enable couples to remain together. In addition to this, the service provides care to people living in their own homes and to those living in the community. The Flexible Dementia Service works closely with people in crisis to prevent unplanned hospital admissions or residential care. This extra care scheme boasts a tremendous range of facilities including a large tenants’ lounge and kitchen; smaller reminiscence lounges (one from the 1960s and one from the 70s), two assisted bathrooms with jacuzzi-style baths and laundry rooms. There is a 24-hour door entry system with CCTV to give additional home security, and lifts to give easy access to first and second floor 80

Orwell is the largest provider of extra care services in Suffolk and is dedicated to the concept of ‘Extra Care’. This means that its services are directed towards older people, especially those needing support and personal care, allowing them to live in their own home, and enabling them to retain their independence. – If you are interested in living or working with Orwell, please call 0345 60 100 30. The staff will be delighted to talk to you and invite you for a tour of one of the services.

accommodation. The communal gardens feature a pond and patio area for tenants to enjoy. Superb facilities aside, it is the staff who contributed to the ‘Outstanding’ rating and who make Levington Court the special place that it is. Recently inspected by the Care Quality Commission, the team at Levington Court was overjoyed to be rated as Outstanding in being responsive to customer needs, well-led by the management team and effective in the work that they do. The level of training and qualifications are important because Levington Court prides itself on providing specialist care for people with conditions, such as dementia. Levington Court intends to expand its services and so is always looking for trained and dedicated people to join the team. This ensures that sufficient resources and care are constantly available, both now and in the future. This is essential in maintaining the high quality and far ranging levels of care and support that stretch beyond the norm. Levington Court has a fully trained and dedicated staff team where training and development opportunities are on-going, with the team given the opportunity to complete fully-funded QCF qualifications.

The staff are committed to providing an excellent service to the tenants, encouraging them to take part in activities, and socialise with other tenants, if they wish. Value-based recruitment days give tenants the opportunity to get involved in the recruitment of the team. The Care Quality Commission’s latest inspection report mentions that at Levington Court tenants: “received care and support which was very responsive to their physical and mental health needs, rights, wishes and preferences.” The report also stated that care plans are prepared to collate detailed information about every tenant so staff have a picture of the whole person and therefore know how to provide exactly the right support. There was also special mention of the excellent rapport between support workers and tenants. This is well-earned because the team has a genuine interest in the tenants’ well-being. They have regular activities including reminiscence cinema evenings, pool table games and a gardening club. The quality of life at Levington Court is enhanced by its location. Being close to the town of Lowestoft, it is ideally situated for lots of amenities, ranging from doctors and dentists, to restaurants and cafés – and, of course, the seaside. In a final reference to the Care Quality Commission report there was a telling sentence that sums up what makes Levington Court such an outstanding extra care provider, and an excellent place to live. It said: “The service was committed to person-centred care and this approach underpinned everything they did.”

FASTE ST-SELLING AGENCY IN THE E AST DARBY & LIFFEN in Gorleston is officially the fastest-selling estate agency in the East Norfolk coastal area, as well as being one of the top-selling agents covering NR31

Darby & Liffen in Gorleston has plenty to be proud of. This family-run, independent estate agency competes against all the bigger firms, yet when it comes to official figures, is beating them hands-down. According to statistics released by housing websites Rightmove and Zoopla in early November 2016, Darby & Liffen is both one of the top-selling and fastest-selling agents, with an average selling time of just 13 weeks compared to some agents who are taking up to 23 weeks to sell. Managing director Owen Darby says: “In August, September and October combined, we sold more properties in NR31 than any other agent – it’s really something to be proud of, we’re pleased how successful we’ve been!” So what is the secret to Darby & Liffen’s success? “There isn’t any secret,” confides Owen, adding: “It’s down to hard work.” There are, however, a number of other key factors besides good, old-fashioned hard work which contribute to the company’s success, such as an in-depth knowledge of the area and many years of experience. Regular and clear communication with clients is also key.

Owen Darby continues: “We know the area, the schools, the families, the amenities. Steve Gray [Owen’s business partner] has nearly 30 years’ experience and I have 20 years’ experience and we have a strong belief in traditional family values. Lettings is a significant part of our business and sales have increased ten-fold for us.” In fact, Darby & Liffen has even had tenants in some of their properties who have gone on to become landlords. Owen says: “They have been warmed by the positive experience they’ve had with us on both sides of the fence.” Darby & Liffen has been in the same family for three generations and today has eight staff, including a sales team of four – Owen, Steve, Hannah and Sam – with the Bells Road-based company specialising in properties in the NR31 postcode – Gorleston, Bradwell, Belton, Hopton, Burgh Castle and so on. In fact, as Owen says, they look after properties: “As far south as Lowestoft and as far north as Acle.” Owen’s grandfather, Stephen Darby, started the business in 1964 and Darby & Liffen has remained family-owned since that time – a rare occurrence on today’s property scene. “It was always on the cards to join the family business,” confides Owen, “I’ve always been enthusiastic about it.”

Based in the heart of Gorleston, Darby & Liffen is a specialist in buying and selling properties in the town and also has a very busy lettings department. Owen says: “As my father used to say, Gorleston is Great Yarmouth’s greatest secret – great eateries and incredible beaches, and we’re so close to the countryside.” Naturally, the property market has its peaks and troughs, but things remain steady at Darby & Liffen, with customers constantly coming through the doors. Owen says: “We’ve had several examples of our success where we’ve had the so-called ‘joint agency challenge’ [where clients have had their property on the market unsuccessfully with another estate agency, but have gone on to ask Darby & Liffen to sell it, too]. They have let us come on board as well and then we’ve successfully sold the property, still charging the sole agency fee. “We are securing numerous instructions and agreeing record levels of sales. Between us we know many people in the local community and this has been a contributing factor in securing instructions with homeowners putting their properties on the market with an agent they can trust.” It’s clear that the team at Darby & Liffen has vision, drive and enthusiasm and that they work hard for both established and brand new clients. Owen says: “We very much look forward to welcoming clients old and new. We’d also like to thank those who have given us their kind and valued instructions to date.” With such a great team spirit and such positive industry statistics in place, it’s clear that Darby & Liffen is going from strength to strength.

PROPERTY OF THE MONTH

Colney Lane in Cringleford

is one of Norwich’s most prestigious addresses and this lovely-looking property has plenty to offer. Located to the south-west of Norwich, this spacious house is ideally located for Norwich city centre, the Park and Ride terminus at Thickthorn and the Norwich Southern Bypass. Three of the region’s largest employers – the University of East Anglia, John Innes Research Centre and the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital - are just a short drive away, while Eaton, across the river from Cringleford, boasts a range of handy amenities including pubs, restaurants, a Post Office, bank, and a Waitrose supermarket. This detached, executive residence has four double bedrooms in total, with the potential for a self-contained, one-bedroom annexe on the ground floor. The large, light and airy kitchen/breakfast room features granite and solid wood worktops, as well as an island unit, and there is a wonderful 19’6 garden room adjacent to the kitchen, with pretty courtyard views. Double doors lead from the kitchen/breakfast room into the separate, large dining room with a beautiful bay window. The triple aspect lounge has lovely views over the garden and features an open fire with an attractive stone fire surround, providing a fabulous focal point. A door leads out on to the raised patio with steps down to the lawn. There is a host of bathrooms – a modern family bathroom, two shower rooms and a downstairs cloakroom – and attractive, mature front and rear gardens with a pretty, secluded courtyard. The property also benefits from a generous driveway and plenty of off-road parking as well as a double garage. The generously-proportioned entrance hall gives the property a lovely, light feel, with a roof light directly above the entrance. With plenty of light and space, the reception rooms are perfect for entertaining and ideal

for relaxing. In addition to the kitchen, dining room, lounge, garden room and annexe, there is also a versatile utility room which houses the boiler, double sink, plumbing for a washing machine and worktops. This room also has access to the garden via a single door and steps down to the lawn. There are three double bedrooms upstairs, while a fourth bedroom/living space on the ground floor offers the annexe potential; this lovely room features double doors leading outside, roof lights and a dressing area leading to a shower room with a WC. Upstairs the first floor is full of character and a variety of versatile accommodation. The dual-aspect master bedroom, for example, comes complete with a dressing room, offering generous storage on both sides, together with views of the front gardens. Two further double bedrooms, a generous shower room and a contemporary family bathroom complete the first floor space. The outside of this property is also impressive, with a striking entrance with low walls and mature shrubs and trees leading to the driveway, which opens out to generous off-road parking and an elegant double garage with wooden doors and a pitched roof. A shingle path leads to the front entrance and around to the former single garage on the left-hand side of the property, while a wrought iron gate leads to the charming, secluded courtyard.

Two areas of the garden are separated by a trimmed hedge; to one side is a lawned area with mature trees and shrubs, while the other side features mature planting. Overall, the garden is very generous, measuring approximately 62’ by 55’. Meanwhile, access to the rear garden is via a pathway on the right-hand side, through the pretty courtyard. This garden measures approximately 74’ by 40’ and is a lovely, peaceful space. With a circular pond, fruit trees and mature planting, this garden is, like the rest of the property, a lovely place in which to relax and entertain.

t

he kitchen is such an important part of any home; the focal point where the family gathers to cook, eat and chat over coffee. It has to be warm and welcoming, attractive and stylish but above all practical to meet the needs of a household. That’s why choosing a new kitchen is such a major decision. With so many styles, appliances, fixtures, fittings and colour schemes to choose from, it can often seem overwhelming, but with Anglia Kitchens & Bedrooms Ltd, help, support, advice and encouragement are always close at hand. And with more than 25 years’ experience within the kitchen sector, the company offers one extra critical element – all its designs are bespoke, tailor-made and manufactured specifically for your home. The company is based on the Hellesdon Park Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Norwich with offices, a two-storey showroom and a manufacturing centre on a self-contained site. Interior design consultant Rob Tavender explained that not only can customers look at an array of styles and design and talk through their options, but as the process evolves they can also see their units being made if they wish. Run by Rob Brown as managing director and Melanie Brown, who is the office manager, Anglia Kitchens & Bedrooms has a four-strong manufacturing team and two dedicated installation staff. Mr Tavender said: “We are primarily a furniture manufacture and, while our main focus is kitchens, we can look to do any room within the home such as bedrooms, home offices and bathrooms. “We offer a fully-installed service which means we deliver any or every part of the installation process from building work to electricity and plumbing, flooring and tiling. “We are a one-stop shop at the bespoke end of the market place to create what the customer’s needs for their requirements.” From an initial visit to the company’s showroom to look at styles and colours schemes, and a factory tour to see how the units are manufactured, Mr Tavender or Mr Brown will visit the customer’s home to assess the site, take measurements and produce a handdrawn plan for a new kitchen listing all the client requirements.

A computer-aided design (CAD) facility for a new kitchen is also available, should the homeowner wish to see one. Mr Tavender said: “We will then make a full presentation to the customer at the showroom, talking through the design and options we think will work well within their kitchen space, and discuss flooring, drawers, appliances, taps, sinks and worktops.” Following a final survey of the premises, the manufacturing and installation process will begin, taking less than 10 weeks before the kitchen is fully fitted and the new focus of the home. “We make everything on site except the worktops; that includes all the cabinets and doors, which are a totally bespoke design from a piece of oak or other wood. “The only aspect of the process we subcontract is electricity and plumbing and having our fitters employed by us means we can guarantee the highest quality installations.” Anglia Kitchens & Bedrooms Ltd operates at the higher end of the market with its bespoke designs and high quality fittings and appliances.

ANGLIA KITCHENS & BEDROOMS LTD, Hellesdon Park Industrial Estate, Hellesdon Park Road, Norwich, NR6 5DR | 01603 417072 | www.angliakb.co.uk

In terms of fittings, the choice of handles tops 350, the drawers are all soft-close and the options for work surfaces are extensive in choice of colour and texture, ranging from Formica and solid acrylics to acrylic Corian worktops, natural granite, solid granite, Silestone quartz or solid oak, beech or maple. The sink range goes from stainless steel to granite, porcelain and moulded acrylic, and appliances are by Neff, Siemens and Bosch. Anglia Kitchens are a main Neff agent; “We hold Neff demo days twice a year,” said Mr Tavender. “They are not just for new customers but for our existing customers too who may be looking to get more from their appliances.” Wood choices are primarily oak, elm, beech and maple for doors, with cabinets made of high grade MDF (medium-density fibre board). Mr Tavender said trends in the kitchen sector appear to be square panel, Shaker-style doors, high gloss finishes and sleek handle-less doors. “I suspect we will see that as the very contemporary and modern look is popular at the moment,” he added, “but we always design a kitchen specifically to a customer’s tastes and requirements – our strength is bespoke designs – and if someone wants traditional, we can do that as well.” Alongside its kitchen expertise, the company specialises in bedroom design and produces bespoke cabinets, angled ceilings and walls, with fascias of oak, elm or beech, and bedside cabinets, and it also builds bed frames or fold-down beds. The company has also created study space and offices within customers’ homes. Bathroom designs also combine innovation with style and practicality with bath fittings from Ideal Standard, Sottini and Rocca, Matki shower cubicles and digital Aqualisa showers. “Whether it is for kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms or home offices, we offer an excellent level of customer service and our cabinet work comes with a lifetime guarantee,” explains Mr Tavender. 95

“The New State Pension regime came into effect this year too. Its starting level is £155.65 per week but in practice new pensioners may get a different figure”

CHANGING TIMES AS THE YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE, CARL LAMB LOOKS AT SOME OF THE SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE WORLD OF FINANCIAL PLANNING

2016 has certainly been an interesting year, with the focal point for concerns about our future financial well-being fixed on that landmark vote in the summer that sees us on a journey that will – probably – see us leave the EU. Markets certainly reacted badly to the news of the vote in the immediate aftermath but actually saw a significant recovery within a period of weeks. However, there are undoubtedly some uncertain times ahead as we negotiate our exit and our new terms of business with our European neighbours. However, 2016 wasn’t just about Brexit. There have been some other important changes too. The year opened with the change to the Deposit Guarantee – ie. the amount that is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in respect of what individuals hold in any one bank or financial institution. This dropped from £85,000 to £75,000 per person in January. The new tax year in April 2016 brought us two new allowances: the personal savings allowance grants basic rate taxpayers tax-free savings interest of up to £1,000. Higher rate taxpayers get an allowance of £500 but additional rate taxpayers get no allowance. There is a new dividend allowance too, which replaces the old system of dividend tax credits. Under the new allowance, the first £5,000 of dividend income is free of tax, whichever tax band you fall into. The New State Pension regime came into effect this year too. Its starting level is £155.65 per week but in practice new pensioners may get a different figure. This is because what you actually get is calculated by combining the entitlements you’ve built up under the old system with any entitlements built up under the new system, subject to certain limits. It’s complicated, but you can request a state pension forecast using

the Government website at www.gov.uk/check-state-pension. Pension flexibility has been around for over a year now and take-up of the new freedoms has been varied. It looks like most pension savers are resisting the temptation to blow their savings on expensive yachts or other luxuries, but the freedoms have given new options to those who have specific needs or circumstances. Advice is always critical before accessing the cash that you have spent your working life accumulating to allow you to enjoy your retirement. At the time of writing, it has just been announced that plans for a secondary annuities market – ie. the opportunity for those who have already purchased an annuity to sell it for a cash sum – are to be shelved. This is following concerns that annuity holders would get very poor value for money in what looked like being a very limited market. We’ve certainly been telling clients with existing annuities that in most cases the return would be unlikely to make this route suitable for them. As we move towards 2017, there are concerns that our UK economy will continue to be troubled throughout the year and investment values are likely to both rise and fall. However, it is useful to make the point that long term investment strategies generally do continue to deliver growth over a five to ten year period. What is often most damaging to people’s financial plans is a knee-jerk reaction to bad news. It is almost always better to keep calm – and talk to your financial adviser. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

“As the judges said, the case was not about whether the United Kingdom should leave the EU. It was quite simply about one aspect of the process of leaving”

FOLLOWING THE LETTER OF THE LAW LEGAL EXPERT JULIAN GIBBONS TAKES A LOOK AT THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING ARTICLE 50

The first round in the fight over Article 50 has been lost by the Government. What is so worrying about the High Court’s decision is the vitriol which has come from the press and some politicians. Equally worrying is the fact that the one minister who should be defending the independence of the judiciary, namely the Lord Chancellor, who is also the Minister of Justice, has been somewhat muted. The prize for the most absurd and ill-informed statement would appear to go to Suzanne Evans, a UKIP contender for the leadership of her party. The judges, she said, should be subject to: “some form of democratic control.” Quite what she means by this is not clear, and I rather doubt she herself has much of a clue as to what she is talking about. Independence of the judiciary is one of the key blocks of a democratic society and indeed it is her party which has often railed against the fact that in certain cases British judges are subservient to judges of the European Court. In their decision-making, judges are and should remain independent of control by either the Government or the legislature. Presumably, what she means by democratic control is controlled by the Government of the day. If she needs an example of what that looks like, then she should cast an eye towards the Russian Federation or, a little further east, to China. When she talks of democratic control, she may, of course, mean directed by the electorate. An example of how that works is to be found in some states of America. There, judicial hopefuls go out on the campaign trail. They don’t require particularly high qualifications to be judges and inevitably their decisions on the bench will on at least some occasions been made with one eye on re-election. Do we seriously want that in the UK? One doubts whether any of the critics have read the decision of the High Court. What seems to have happened is that either there has been very selective reading, no reading at all or simply a fixation on the result without attempting to understand the

context. As the judges themselves went out of their way to say, the case was not about whether the United Kingdom should leave the EU. It was quite simply about one aspect of the process of leaving, namely whether the prime minister has the power to withdraw from the European treaties using the royal prerogative, or whether the withdrawal had to be by legislation, ie by an Act of Parliament. To summarise a quite lengthy and comprehensive judgment, which contained a detailed analysis of the royal prerogative and the way over the centuries it has gradually being controlled or abolished in many fields, one can say that the court’s decision came down to the fact that various Acts of Parliament since the European Communities Act 1972 have conferred rights upon the British people arising from the various European treaties. For the Government to use the royal prerogative to withdraw from those treaties would, it found, amount to ministers in the Government removing rights which Parliament had granted to the people via legislation. Parliament is supreme in these matters. To this day, the British Government makes treaties and goes to war by exercising the royal prerogative, which is the residual power of Government held by the Queen but exercised by ministers. Over the centuries the right of the monarch and later the monarch’s ministers to amend or repeal laws and regulations without going through Parliament has been curtailed, precisely because it has been viewed by successive generations as undemocratic and unparliamentary. The High Court concluded that the power of ministers to use the royal prerogative to withdraw from treaties, where they have been adopted by Acts of Parliament, has by implication been removed by that legislation. For that reason, the court decided that the lawful way of implementing Article 50 was by an Act of Parliament giving effect to the referendum result and repealing the Acts which implemented those treaties in English law. The Government is to appeal to the Supreme Court. Like all appeals to the Supreme Court, this one will be on points of law. It is anyone’s guess what the outcome may be, but the Supreme Court has disagreed with a powerful array of judges in the High Court before! What is certain is that whatever the decision, it will be made on legal principles and on an analysis of a hugely important but very difficult area of constitutional law. Contrary to the perceptions of opportunist politicians and the popular press, it will not be a sop to popular opinion.

lings hyundai lowestoft

Lings is delighted to announce the official opening of Lings Hyundai Lowestoft. Based at the company’s six-acre Riverside motor park location, Lings Hyundai is your number one destination for Hyundai on the East Coast – with a full new and used sales department and a state-ofthe-art workshop facility. “We’re delighted to welcome Hyundai Cars into the Lings fold,” says Lings director Paul Barkshire. “Hyundai is a car manufacturer of outstanding reputation and we feel that Lings can uphold this well-earned renown. We feel it fits the Lings profile perfectly and underlines the Lings commitment to the Lowestoft area – offering trust, value and service to our customers, with the company once more making serious additional investment after the acquisition of the Mitsubishi car franchise in 2014.” Heading up Lings Hyundai will be general sales manager Daniel Lake, who commented: “We’ve put together an experienced team that will ensure continuity for previous Hyundai customers while bringing their individual passion for the brand into the Lings family. “The Hyundai product range is incredibly exciting with something to suit any customer’s requirements – from the powerful 5.0-litre Genesis saloon, the family-friendly Tucson SUV or the compact i10 hatchback, and the brand new range of IONIQ hybrid-petrol electric and all-electric cars – the diversity of the range is incredible and the quality of the product is genuinely outstanding. “We know our customers are going to love it.” The first cars arrived on site at the start of week ahead of the official opening on November 11 – an exciting moment for all involved. “Getting the cars here was a real ‘wow’ moment,” says Dan. “It’s a

huge moment for the group as a whole and an exciting challenge for me personally. I can’t wait to get started with my new team and start welcoming our customers through the door. “As well as welcoming new faces to Hyundai, continuity of care will be paramount, and existing customers of Hyundai Lowestoft will enjoy the same high quality service from our sales and service teams – and Lings Hyundai will be more than happy to honour existing servicing arrangements.” Lings Motor Group is a family-owned and run business. With over 60 years’ experience in the motor trade, Lings Lowestoft is comprised of Lings Honda Cars and Lings Mitsubishi Cars in addition to MotorLings All Make Used Cars. Lings Lowestoft is also an official Honda Motorcycle, Triumph Motorcycle and Husqvarna Motorcycle dealer and the main UK outlet for Hein Gericke motorcycle clothing and accessories. Lings Hyundai will temporarily be homed at the former Dingles annex while construction work takes place inside the main Lings showroom. For further details please call Lings Motor Group on 01502 537444. The Hyundai company was founded in 1967, and the first car arrived at the European market in 1982. This was the Pony, which sold for £3,075. At that time the Korean market was something of a mystery to UK buyers, but as the range grew, buyers could see it offered great value for money; and Hyundai was among the first manufacturer to tempt buyers with great warranty deals – a show of faith in the cars’ reliability. The current line-up is wide-ranging, from family saloons to SUVs, hybrids and all-electrics. Here are just three: Highly popular at the lower end is the latest i10, which has undergone a series of design refinements, including the cascading grille which will become the family identity for Hyundai models in the future. It is fresh and stylish, aspects obvious in the interior colours; the new i10 comes with a stylish new red shade of cloth material, and customers can now additionally choose from blue, orange, beige and black interior colours on all trims. There are petrol and diesel versions, plus an automatic option, and even a 1.0 LPG variant on offer. The Hyundai ix35 is the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell electric vehicle. Already on the road in 15 countries around the world, including 11 in Europe, the ix35 demonstrates the brand’s technical expertise and commitment to ultra-low emission motoring. The ix35 Fuel Cell is equipped with a 100kW (136ps) electric motor, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 100mph (160km/h). Two hydrogen storage tanks, with a total capacity of 5.64kg, enable the vehicle to travel a total of up to 369 miles (594km) on a single fill, and it can reliably start in temperatures as low as minus 25C. The energy is stored in a 24KW lithium-ion polymer battery, jointly developed with LG Chemical. Hyundai’s New ix20 celebrated its world première at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and builds on all the qualities of the original model, with an enhanced engine line-up, new technologies and design refreshments to widen its appeal. Since its initial launch in 2010, Hyundai has sold almost 200.000 units – capturing a nine per cent share in the European multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) market. The two diesel engines have been enhanced to provide more torque – 240 Nm (1.4-litre) and 260 Nm (1.6-litre) – from just 1,500 rpm. There is also a new six-speed automatic transmission.

MOTORING

preparing for winter

WinTer is ON Its waY

Motorists should prepare for the cold months ahead by getting their car in shape, says David Wakefield

T

here are dire forecasts of Arctic-style weather heading for Britain this winter, so it becomes vitally important to make sure that your car is ready to cope with all that the elements can throw at it. If you haven’t got the time to prepare your car for winter, then you can ask an expert to do it for you. Many main dealers and high street car spares shops can do this – some even offer free winter car checks. But there are also some checks that you can carry out yourself. Breakdowns more than double during the winter months, as snow, ice, wind and rain cause havoc with driving conditions. However, a few simple precautions can ensure both you and your car are prepared for what’s to come.

Winter car maintenance checklist

It’s important to keep your car well maintained throughout the year, but this becomes even more vital during the winter months. The good news is that winter car checks really aren’t too different from normal maintenance procedures; however there are a few items that you should pay extra attention to.

Check exterior lights

It sounds simple, and it is. The days are shorter and the weather is worse during the winter months, making maintenance of your exterior lights an important aspect of any winter car checklist. Check and clean your lights regularly (particularly the rear lights and your hi-vis foglight). The salt and dirt can quickly build-up, reducing visibility at night as well as during periods of snow, fog and rain. Carry extra bulbs in case of a failure.

Winter tyres

If you drive frequently in winter, then consider buying a set of winter tyres. They offer exceptional grip when the temperature drops below seven degrees, and in snow and ice. They’re not cheap, but well worth the investment for the additional safety they bring. Even if you don’t want the extra cost of winter tyres, checking the tread depth of your existing tyres is important. The legal limit is 1.6mm, but having more than this can dramatically improve steering and braking. Also check your tyre pressures regularly.

Winter car equipment

Carrying an emergency kit with you at all times through the winter might seem a bit extreme – but if you ever find yourself stranded you’ll be glad of it. Items you should consider carrying if setting out on a long journey in snowy or icy conditions are: Mobile phone and charger; hazard warning triangle; hi-visibility vest; First Aid kit; de-icer and a scraper; a shovel; a tow rope; Wellington boots; a torch; warm clothes such as a jumper or an extra coat; food and drink; set of jump leads (you may need help from another motorist, or may want to offer help to someone who is stranded). By checking your car for the colder months and taking these precautions, you should be in good stead for the winter weather ahead.

Check your car battery

Cold and damp weather is a battery killer. There’s little worse than the mechanical groan when you turn the key caused by a dying car battery. If your battery is struggling to start your car, the chances are it’s on its way out. You can test the battery yourself if you have the correct equipment, but it’s far easier to ask a specialist (indeed a winter service will almost certainly cover a battery check). Assuming you can start the car, you can drive to your local main dealer or car spares shop to buy a new one. Most car battery stockists will even fit it for you.

Check antifreeze

Antifreeze, as its name suggests, stops the water in the engine’s cooling system from freezing. To test its effectiveness, you’ll need an antifreeze tester, which cost about £5. To use it, unscrew the coolant reservoir cap under the bonnet, after checking the engine is cold. Lower the tube into the coolant and squeeze the rubber bulb on the end to suck some antifreeze inside the tester. You can then read the freezing point of the antifreeze using the scale inside the tester. Replace the antifreeze in the car’s system and then replace the cap.

Check screen wash

Wintery weather is frequently wet, meaning you’ll spend lots of time using your windscreen wipers. There’s a high risk of them smearing grime across the windscreen if your screen wash bottle is empty. This can be highly dangerous, particularly at night, as your vision will be distorted and restricted. Open the windscreen washer bottle under the bonnet, and fill it with screen wash. You can buy ready mixed or concentrated screen wash, which you’ll need to mix with water. Screen wash has a lower freezing temperature than water alone, meaning you shouldn’t end up with frozen washer jets.

arrangements. We try to do something slightly different every year and this year [on Sunday, December 18] Paul and Stephen Amer will be adding a touch of the Rat Pack to the show along with The Moonglow Sisters. Tickets can be purchased from the Norwich Theatre Royal Box Office. You were born and brought up in Norfolk – can you tell us about that? I had a traditional upbringing including our holiday chalet at Bacton where I spent most of the summer on the beach and fishing with my Dad. He was a plumber, I used to help him with odd jobs, and Mum was a flower arranger; I didn’t help her so much! We had two dogs called Rufus and Basil and I loved playing in the garden with them.

Jonathan Wyatt The Jonathan Wyatt Big Band started almost 30 years ago and has performed around East Anglia and far beyond, appearing on a Royal Gala Performance, on the BBC and ITV, for the National Trust and throughout the UK. The founder is Jonathan Wyatt who talked to Places&Faces® before his Christmas show and busy year ahead. – www.jwbb.co.uk

2017 is the 30th anniversary of the Jonathan Wyatt Big Band – how did it begin? The band started in 1987 when sitting in the bar at the British Legion chatting about music. I decided to form my own outfit with an ambition to have a band that performed regularly across Norfolk. First rehearsal was in March 1987 and the first gig was at Norwich Jazz Club, Jazz City. I am proud that JWBB continues to be East Anglia’s premier big band. It rehearses on Thursday evenings in Norwich and we’re always happy to hear from new musicians and vocalists. What sort of music does the band play? Anything from the 1920s to the present day, including the music of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, The Rat Pack, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Michael Bublé, Paul Anka, Robbie Williams and modern day big band arrangers such as Gordon Goodwin. How will you celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary? There will be several special events. A charity concert in aid of the stroke unit on February 12 at the Pavilion Theatre, Gorleston, where I will also be reforming the East Norfolk Schools Jazz orchestra for this event in memory of band member Pete Fraser. Then our Big Band weekend at Pontins Pakefield, from April 21 to 24 plus the Evening of Big Band and Comedy on April 22 at the Pavilion Theatre in Cromer. Also a special concert celebrating the music of Glenn Miller at St Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, on June 24. Tell us about Swing Into Christmas, your annual concert at The Forum in Norwich? We’ve had our Christmas concert at The Forum for over 10 years. It’s a mixture of both traditional and more modern Christmas Big Band 122

What were your early musical influences and when did you start playing the trombone? My Dad played Glenn Miller records on a Sunday afternoon and that sparked my interested in music. He always wanted me to learn to play the trombone so in 1983 I started to learn at Sprowston High School and I was taught by Jack Gibson. I must add that Dave Amis was an influential teacher and I always enjoyed his performances with the JWBB. Which artists do you enjoy listening to now? All kinds of jazz, especially the Count Basie Band. The CD I currently have on is the Count Basie Christmas CD – A very Swinin’ Basie Christmas! I also have to listen to the Aladdin and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang CDs as they are my son’s favourites. What do you like most about living in Norfolk? There is a superb mix of city, unspoilt countryside and the coast all within a short distance of each other. A disadvantage is that it takes a long time to get anywhere that is out of Norfolk! How will you be spending Christmas? We will be spending Christmas at home as a family. It will be very special this year with a new addition to the family – Esme - as well as my son, Charlie (four), who is extremely excited about the arrival of Father Christmas. How would you spend a day off in the area? Days off are rare, but during the summer I enjoyed going to Wells, stopping at Byfords in Holt to collect a picnic on the way. After the picnic, I enjoyed taking my little boy down to the water to look for crabs. What do you miss most when you’re away? I work away a lot for my day job as a sound mixer for TV and film so I miss my family the most and look forward to driving home on a Friday evening to spend the weekend together. Sum Norfolk up in five words Unspoilt, wonderful people, peaceful, caring. How would you sum yourself up? Passionate, caring, family man, nurturing, ambitious. What are your plans for the future? To continue to keep the Big Band going for the next 30 years!
