HELLO, AND WELCOME to the 7th edition of the What’s On West Suffolk magazine. The summer is nearly upon us and I’m sure that we’re all hoping that the weather will be as glorious as last year! We are incredibly lucky with the amount of fun things to do and see in West Suffolk – it certainly makes planning the school holidays easier. This summer is filled with festivals, exhibitions and tourist attractions to discover. Highlights include the fifth annual Dragon Fest, which will take place at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village on 29 & 30 June, and the new Wonderland Exhibition at Moyses Hall.
The Bury St Edmunds Festival will return to venues across the town in May. The Festival has something for all the family and this year there are some fantastic events for children, including comedy by James Campbell, performances of the much-loved book Aliens Love Underpants and the true story of the big bad wolf told by the National Youth Music Theatre. Our local parks and gardens will be in full bloom and make wonderful places to explore on sunny days. Head off on the Beowulf and Grendel Trail in West Stow Country Park or try to spot all the different
species of tree on the Tree Trail in Brandon Country Park. There’s so much to discover! You can find out more about all the events running across West Suffolk online at www.whatsonwestsuffolk.co.uk What’s On West Suffolk is provided by West Suffolk Council (previously St Edmundsbury Borough Council) as part of the authorities support for leisure and the arts as well as healthier communities. RIDE ROUND BURY Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw returns this summer, (weather permitting!) for its first full season of operation.
THE BURY ST EDMUNDS RICKSHAW PROJECT was launched in June 2018, thanks to start-up funding from the town and borough councils, and proved very popular. With over 500 trips, covering a total of 1,400 miles, the rickshaw has already become a familiar sight in Bury. The aim of the project is to help local people who experience social isolation and/or limited mobility to get outdoors into the fresh air and interact with others as they enjoy a ride round town. Passengers always travel in pairs - with a friend or carer, or one of the ‘Chatty Chum’ volunteers. Passengers are collected from their home or day centre and can choose where they go in the rickshaw, with the Abbey Gardens being the most popular destination. Last year, many also enjoyed the World War 1 Trail of artwork around the town. The rides are completely free, and available seven days a week, including evenings in the summer. The rickshaw and volunteers will also be supporting various events in the town such as Hidden Gardens, Bury Goes Biking, Girls Night Out and the proposed Hollywood Trail. Trustee Sam Reid is looking forward to turning the pedals again after a break for the winter. “We were really happy with our first summer of rides – we had lovely passengers and fantastic weather!” said Sam, “There is something very special about seeing the town from a rickshaw, you can’t help smiling and there’s always lots to discuss on board! I’m delighted to say that most of our volunteers are able to join us again this year. “We are already taking bookings and will again be working with most of the care homes in town to offer regular rides. But we are especially keen to hear from neighbours, carers, relatives of people who rarely have the opportunity to get out and about for whatever reason. Remember, it’s a free service and we collect people from their home anywhere in Bury.” Book a free ride by telephone on 01284 339449 or online; www.bserickshaw.org.uk

SUMMERTIME FEELING Summer has blossomed at West Suffolk Parks – here are some ideas on how to make the most of the warm weather
AS THE DAYS GROW LONGER, AND HOPEFULLY WARMER, head outdoors and explore your local park. Walking amongst nature is known to have health benefits for both the body and mind. Try the Japanese art of ‘forest bathing’ with a woodland stroll around one West Suffolk’s many parks. Breathe deep and savour the sights and sounds of nature to get the full mindfulness benefits. Brandon Country Park has some lovely well-marked trails, or why not just explore the beautiful Nowton Park or East Town Park? Take to your pedals and discover woodlands and heathland on your bike. Why not check out the brand new Brecks Trail, a 14 mile route between Brandon Country Park and West Stow Country Park, or try out Brandon Country Park’s Poacher Cycling Trail – 8.5 miles of wide paths and narrow tracks through the heart of Thetford Forest. For a family adventure, take on the magical Beowulf & Grendel Trail at West Stow Country Park. Go on a journey through unique parts of the Breckland landscape where you will uncover a sleeping dragon! An interactive trail map can be purchased from the West Stow visitor centre with a
quiz, colouring sheets and rune challenges. Pack a picnic and make a real day of it! All of the parks offer idyllic picnic spots, just don’t forget your picnic blanket and a bag to carry your rubbish home with you. Both Brandon Country Park and Nowton Park have some foraging events coming up to guide you to eating wild and free – safely, of course! Let the children run free with friends on the many play areas that the parks have to offer. Abbey Gardens has a well-equipped play area with a treehouse nestled within a willow maze that will fire up imaginations, and West Stow Country Park has an adventure playground with a sandy surface and state-of-the-art equipment. The Parks also have a number of different, and intriguing, activities. At Nowton Park you can explore the maze, just make sure you don’t get lost! There are 2,500 hornbeam trees that make up over two miles of hedging – can you find the centre? Abbey Gardens offers visitors Crazy Golf and East Town Park in Haverhill has a Railway Walk that runs on the disused Haverhill to Sudbury line. There really is something for everyone to enjoy in our Parks this summer!

Fullers Mill garden is an enchanting and tranquil waterside retreat spanning seven-acres, situated on the banks of the River Lark at West Stow in Suffolk. It combines light dappled woodland with a fabulous collection of rare and unusual shrubs, perennials, lilies and marginal plants, collected over the course of 50 years by the creator of the garden, the late Bernard Tickner MBE. In 2013, the garden was gifted to Perennial, the only UK charity dedicated to helping people in horticulture. Head Gardener Annie Dellbridge and her team of gardeners and volunteers now maintain the garden for the enjoyment of visitors from April to September. Whilst there, treat yourself to tea, coffee and delicious homemade cakes in The Bothy Tea Room, pick up a souvenir gift or take a bit of the garden home with you by purchasing one of the plants propagated on site.

THE WORLD’S LEADING MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE ARTIST, Navi is joined by Michael’s own guitarist, Jennifer Batten, in King Of Pop at The Apex on 14 May. Navi is regarded as the world’s leading MJ tribute artist. He performed for Michael at one of his birthday parties in Los Angeles, where Michael gave him a standing ovation for his renditions of ‘Smooth Criminal’ and ‘Billie Jean’. From there, they remained friends and Navi was regularly hired as a body double and decoy to distract fans and press when Michael was on tour. Navi also starred as MJ in the movie ‘Michael Jackson – Searching For Neverland’. Jennifer Batten was Michael’s “righthand woman” on three sell-out world tours. She was initially hand-picked to play on the Bad Tour but Michael was so impressed that she joined him on the road for the next 10 years, playing to more than 4.5 million fans worldwide on his Dangerous and History tours and the famous Super Bowl performance.
PHOTO: STEPHEN CONNOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Jennifer tells us about Michael and Navi… You’ve seen the real MJ on stage many times. How does Navi compare? Navi helps bring back the magic. His eyes and frame are scarily similar. He puts on a great show and I really enjoy the vibe. He can transport people back to the peak of the MJ era. What made you want to go out on the road with Navi? It’s just fun to play that material, and the fans want the music kept alive. Navi’s bands are always really good, so I know the groove will be there. And of course there are so many other elements that have to be
there - from the quality of the dancing to the pacing of the show. Navi seems to have a knack of connecting to his audience. It’s a question you are probably fed up of answering but what was Michael Jackson like as a person? He was wonderful. He was a creative tornado and constantly inventing things whether it be lyrics, videos, stage ideas, or one-of-a-kind special effects for the live show. He was kind, respectful, and very appreciative of what the band brought to the shows.
THE
KING OF POP Michael Jackson’s guitarist joins leading MJ tribute show, King Of Pop, at The Apex on 14 May
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on stage? Part of his costume Velcro had come undone and he motioned for me to fix it. I tried but I was also trying to keep up my choreography in Workin’ Day and Night. In the end I failed miserably. Did you have any role models, particularly as a woman starting out in the music business? I listened to Monette Sudler and Emily Remler (both jazz guitarists) but back in the late 70’s/early 80’s it was slim pickins’ re: female guitarists. So it was mostly men that I listened to, especially Jeff Beck, who I ended up playing with for three years. Do you think you learnt anything from Michael? Plenty. I learned that music is only the bottom level of putting on a show. Communication with the audience, whether it’s verbal or within the entertainment, is more and more important. Jennifer and Navi bring an unforgettable experience for Jackson fans across the UK, taking fans closer than ever to an original MJ concert and featuring all the greatest hits, along with an incredible live band and dancers. King Of Pop is at The Apex on 14 May, see www.theapex.co.uk or ring 01284 758000 for more information or to book tickets.

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT
S R U ? A S O DIN Go on an exciting pre-historic adventure with Dr Ben Garrod during his hit stage show about the deadliest predators that ever roamed the planet
DO YOU KNOW IF A TRICERATOPS LIVED IN THE JURASSIC PERIOD? What did a Stegasaurus have for breakfast? If you or your children want to be more dino-savy, then come and meet TV presenter, author and all-round dinosaur aficionado Dr Ben Garrod, who will be appearing in Bury St Edmunds in May. Dr Ben Garrod is an English evolutionary biologist, primatologist and broadcaster and a Teaching Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University. Ben has presented several
television shows, including ‘Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur’ with Sir David Attenborough, ‘Hyper Evolution: Rise of the Robots’ for BBC Four and ‘The Day the Dinosaurs Died’ on BBC Two. He also presented his own award-winning six-part series for the BBC called ‘Secrets of Bones’. We caught up with Dr Ben to chat about his love of paleontology and his new show ‘So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs’. His hit stage show takes the audience on an exciting pre-historic adventure with the deadliest predators that ever roamed the planet. Yes, dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Allosaurus and Spinosaurus would have walked or swam right where you are now!
Were you interested in dinosaurs as a child? Not just dinosaurs, but anything prehistoric. My first fossil find was on a beach near where I grew up. I was five years old and was on a day out with mum and dad. We found the fossilised shell of a belemnite, which was a relative of the squid we see alive today. It was over 100 million years old and that blew my socks off! It made me start questioning where all these ancient animals went, why we don’t have dinosaurs around now and how the planet could be so old. Obviously, I loved dinosaurs too and loved reading about them in all my old books, imagining what it would be like to see a T-rex walking through my garden. Why are so many children obsessed with them? So many people are obsessed with dinosaurs, both kids and adults alike. It’s hard to pin down exactly why we love them so much and I think it’s for a few different reasons. First of all, when we are growing up we love to learn lots of facts about things. Dinosaurs are the same and we love to learn how fast an Allosaurus could run or discover which was the biggest. I also think they inspire us through being so big, fierce and scary but we feel safe because we know dinosaurs can never hurt us because they’re all extinct (or are they?).

You are described as an evolutionary biologist what exactly does that entail? I’m a Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of East Anglia. Sounds fancy doesn’t it, but it’s the coolest job in the world. The ‘Biology’ bit just means I get to study all sorts of life – it could be anything that is alive or was ever alive, so anything from a chimpanzee or a Troodon, to a butterfly or monkey puzzle tree. The ‘Evolution’ bit means I study how these living organisms change and adapt over time. How does a changing marine environment affect sharks or how does predation from birds affect camouflage in lizards? All these changes are down to evolution. I study life and how it changes, and I share that knowledge with as many people as possible. Being a scientist means you get to study cool stuff like this every single day.
just north of Mexico then in all likelihood, things might have been very different and you might really have had a Tyrannosaursus in your garden or a Protoceratops in your playground. But remember, the asteroid did not kill all the dinosaurs . . . Have you ever been on expeditions to find dinosaur remains and where are the places most likely to find them? I have. My favourite was when I went with Sir David Attenborough to Argentina to film the discovery and excavation of a true dino giant. The great thing about loving dinosaurs and living in the British Isles is that we have so many fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric species. There are certain beaches and riversides famous for fossils and you have a very good chance of finding the fossil bones of a prehistoric marine reptile or shark teeth or ammonite shells. You always have to go with an adult and thoroughly plan your trip because fossil hunting can be dangerous but it’s so much fun. ‘So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs’ is an interactive, educational and highly entertaining show using film footage from the BBC’s ‘Planet Dinosaur’ and photos of Ben’s own palaeontological dinosaur digs. Ben will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about dinosaurs - and more!
Here's something we all want to know which dinosaur would have been the most dangerous to humans? Arrrrrgh, this is such a tough question. Is one T. rex worse than one hundred velociraptors? Even something like a Triceratops could have been deadly. It’s easier to say which dinosaurs would have been safe . . . there wouldn’t have been many. Stegosaurus had tail spikes around one metre long, Ankylosaurus had a tail club which could have destroyed a car and Argentinosaurus weighed so much that you wouldn’t want to be stepped on. And they’re just the herbivores! Imagine what the meat-eaters would have done.
So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs is at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Sunday 12 May at 3pm. Ring the box office on 01284 758000 or see www.theapex.co.uk for more information.
And which was the very biggest? Ah, this is a question I get asked a lot. There has been huge debate and even some arguments between scientists. I’m not going to give it away – you’ll have to come to my show and find out. I’ll give you a clue . . . it’s not the one you think it is. What dinosaurs would have roamed around this country many millions of years ago? We had so many prehistoric species that we’re spoilt for choice now. We had giant sauropods up on the Western Isles in Scotland, early relatives of T. rex in Wales and even the fish-eating Baryonyx on the Isle of Wight. There are also discoveries of marine reptiles such as the dolphin-like ichthyosaurs and super-predator pliosaurs all around our coastlines all the time. The best thing to do is get out there and go have a look or visit your local museum and discover what used to swim, fly, run and plod around near where you live, millions of years ago. Were numbers declining before whatever environmental catastrophe wiped them out about 65million years ago and would they have become extinct naturally? No, they weren’t. The Cretaceous period was the third major period of the dinosaurs and they were doing really well. Some of the most well-known dinosaurs were around right about the time when the asteroid struck. It was also the age of the titanosaurs – the biggest dinosaurs to ever live. If that asteroid hadn’t crashed into the sea 13

THE N HERITAGAETIONAL CENTRE FO R HORSER ACING & SPORTIN G ART
NEW SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT PALACE HOUSE, NEWMARKET THE NATIONAL HERITAGE CENTRE FOR HORSERACING & SPORTING ART will host a special photography exhibition from 4th May to 3rd November 2019. The Thirty Assassins: Riders of the Palio, by Marco Delgou, features jockeys who have participated in the biannual horse race in Sienna, called the Palio. This horse race, ridden bare back, is a throwback contest to an earlier age as well an event intertwined with treachery and sinister intrigue. How else can a jockey who finishes 8th end up with more money than the winner? Photographer Marco Delogu tightly crops and frames these portraits and narrowly focuses his lens on their eyes at the exclusion of almost all else. It is about the gaze of the subject and the direct connection with the photographer, and ultimately with us, the viewer. One can perceive defiance; the jockeys are challenging us with their gaze. These photographs are stark, almost graphic in these high contrast black and white renditions.

SUMMER IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO VISIT NEWMARKET WITH TWO BANK HOLIDAYS, THE MAY HALF-TERM AND THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS, there are so many wonderful reasons to plan a visit to Newmarket and explore all that the town has to offer with Discover Newmarket, the town’s official tour guide. For starters, the racing season is back underway at the Home of Horseracing, springing back to life with the Craven Meeting shortly before Easter and running through to the end of August, before the start of the Gold Season in autumn on the Rowley Mile. Take a Race Day Tour and get exclusive access to areas usually off limits to the public. There are lots of new arrivals down at The National Stud and it’s a fabulous time to pay a visit to the 500-acre property, the
20
only one of its kind open to the public in the UK. Spend time with the mares and foals in the paddocks for an experience unlike any other. Marvel at the majestic stallions before stopping in for a bite to eat in the Wavertree’s Coffee Shop. Tours of The National Stud start at just £11 per person and run from Wednesday to Sunday at 11am with an extra tour time on a Saturday and Sunday at 1pm. Take advantage of a family ticket for two adults and two children for just £30. Discover Newmarket will once again be offering the History and Heritage Walking Tour this summer with June 8, July 20 and September 14 confirmed as the dates. This fantastic Tour allows you to retrace the steps of royalty and explores sights of historical interest that have shaped the town.
There’s also the option to include a delicious breakfast, perfectly timed after working up an appetite during your walk. Newmarket’s other great attraction, Palace House is also well worth a visit in the coming months. This five-acre site, home to the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, makes for a great outing whether you are a major history buff wanting to study the works of some incredible artists or are looking for something to do with the kids. Housed in part of King Charles II’s sporting palace, the works of the likes of Sir Alfred Munnings and George Stubbs are well worth viewing here, while across Palace Street the history of the sport of horseracing is worth a few hours of your time. Have a go on the racehorse simulator and get a taste of
life as a jockey before going through to see the work done by the Retraining of Racehorses charity in their agship yard. Explore the world of horseracing with unique behind the scenes experiences like the Thoroughbred Breakfast, Country Mile and Short Head Tours all of which offer a unique insight into the Sport of Kings. For a more opulent experience, a Champagne Afternoon Tea and Tour at the Jockey Club Rooms is a must, as is the Discover Newmarket Feature Tour which includes a sumptuous threecourse lunch at The Packhorse Inn. For more information on Discover Newmarket visit www.discovernewmarket.co.uk or call 0344 748 9200 or email admin@discovernewmarket.co.uk.

Wonderland LOOKING IN
A special summer exhibition comes to Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds
SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE WORLD will be brought to Bury St Edmunds this summer. A selection of the best of Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books - Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there (1872) - will be on show at Moyse’s Hall Museum from Saturday 8th June to Sunday 1st September 2019. John Tenniel spent all of his life in London where he worked as a political cartoonist for
Punch magazine, but in 1864 he was approached by Lewis Carroll (an Oxford mathematics don whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) with the request to illustrate a small nonsense book for children he wished to publish. The initial story had been made up by Dodgson for the daughters of the Dean of Christ Church College during a boating trip on 4 July 1862, and at the request of one of them, Alice Liddell, he wrote out the story of the little girl who dreamt (or did she?) that she went down a rabbit hole into Wonderland where she met an amazing set of characters - the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the Cheshire Cat - and found herself in some awfully weird situations. The story - published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - was an instant hit with children and adults alike - as was the sequel Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there published seven years later. From the very start it was agreed that a major part of their success was due to the unique and imaginative illustrations supplied to the text by John Tenniel and despite there now being many hundreds of artists worldwide who have illustrated Alice, Tenniel’s illustrations remain the definitive ones. The exhibition on show at Moyse’s Hall Museum is a selection of the best illustrations from both books (about half of the complete number) in which the creative genius of both Carroll and Tenniel is shown at its best. The original drawings were made on wooden blocks and then engraved by commercial engravers in London and the prints on show – printed directly from these blocks - are perfect examples of the skill of both illustrator and engraver. The exhibition, LOOKING IN WONDERLAND, will be on show at Moyse’s Hall Museum, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1DX from Saturday 8th June – Sunday 1st September 2019. www.moyseshall.org
A Summer of Stories ‘A Summer of Stories’ coincides with the Looking in Wonderland exhibition at Moyse’s Hall Museum. Visitors are invited to come and step inside the pages of the children’s classic with the chance to see a fascinating array of objects from the Heritage collections all themed to bring to life the beloved tales of authors such as Roald Dahl and Beatrix Potter, to name a few. Rare, collectable editions and a healthy dose of magic will engage and inspire children of all ages! Whilst you’re visiting, be sure to check out the wonderfully eclectic displays at the Museum. Find prison paraphernalia, artefacts relating to witchcraft, the world class Gershom Parkington Clock Collection and much more! www.whatsonwestsuffolk.co.uk 23

Purpose built in the early 18th century as The Assembly Rooms, the Grade I listed venue changed its name and became The Athenaeum in 1854. This makes it the perfect setting to add your own story to the history of the building.
S
BUILDING As well as the award-winning surrounding area, The Athenaeum itself is an elegant Georgian masterpiece. With white pillars, high ceilings and a spectacular Ballroom – complete with ornate chandelier – this is a venue that guests will always remember.
HR I
LOCATION Bury St Edmunds is a beautiful, historic market town and The Athenaeum is situated in the very heart of it. The picturesque town won the award for ‘Best Large Town’ at the 2017 Anglia in Bloom competition and is home to a number of much-loved attractions, including the beautiful Abbey Gardens.
BESPOKE There are a range of wedding packages available at The Athenaeum but those with specific ideas can request a bespoke quote tailored to their requirements and budget. Quality will never be compromised in order to have all the important aspects taken care of on such a special day.
P HO TO :C
THERE IS A LOT TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING A WEDDING, PARTY, PROM OR SPECIAL OCCASION and one of the decisions that can make or break the day is the venue. With so much choice out there it can seem like a daunting task, but the decision is easy – here is why The Athenaeum ticks all the boxes.

Our Bury St Edmunds organises two of the big bank holiday annual events – the Whitsun Fayre at the end of May and the Food & Drink Festival at the end of August. Both of these events will run for two days and feature the hugely popular urban beach. No need to trek all the way to the coast to make sandcastles, watch Punch and Judy or just relax in a deckchair and feel the sand between your toes, when you can enjoy the Our Bury St Edmunds beach here in
the town centre. At the Whitsun Fayre you’ll find it outside Moyses Hall Museum and for the Food & Drink Festival in August it will be in Charter Square at arc shopping centre. Another attraction returning to both events by popular demand is the mini-farm. Here children will be able to meet a range of cute farm animals including pygmy goats and a miniature horse. The Whitsun Fayre will offer a range of stalls including crafts, food, and a strong focus on plants and flowers for keen gardeners. There’ll be street entertainment, face painting, astronomy workshops and fairground rides too. Two celebrity chefs will be making their first appearances at the Our Bury St Edmunds Food & Drink Festival this year. Nick Nairn, who has many TV credits to his long-established career as a chef, cookery school owner and food campaigner,

is known for his passion for Scottish ingredients and dishes. Dean Edwards was second on Masterchef Goes Large in 2006, at which point he gave up his job as a digger driver to pursue a career involving cooking and food. In between these two great bank holiday festivals you’ll also find the new Theatre Royal Star Trail promoted by Our Bury St Edmunds and running throughout the summer. The Ale Trail, which is now into its second year, will continue and there will also be a special celebration of all the town centre independent businesses during a week in early July.
Saturday 25 May Theatre Royal Star Trail goes live in the town centre (until October 27). Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May Our Bury St Edmunds Whitsun Fayre 10am-4pm both days. Monday 1 – Sunday 7 July Our Bury St Edmunds Independents Week Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August Our Bury St Edmunds Food & Drink Festival 10am-5pm both days. Summer exhibitions at THE APEX GALLERY
Visit The Apex Galley throughout the summer for a number of exhibitions held within the striking architecture of Bury St Edmunds’ beautiful venue
VISIBLE GIRLS: REVISITED Thursday 4 April – Tuesday 28 May In the early 1980s, Anita Corbin was driven to represent young women in a photographic genre that was almost entirely dominated by men. Mods, punks, skinheads, rastas, lesbians, rockers – young women defying the mainstream, showing their individuality in tribes characterised by music, fashion, geography and sexual orientation. 36 years later, Corbin has called those original girls back together for Visible Girls: Revisited.
ROSEY HANCOCK – COLOUR INJECTED LIFE Wednesday 29th May – Sunday 23 June This exhibition celebrates artist Rosey Hancock’s love of colour, line and texture in everyday life. On her travels she has come across many interesting things that visually excite her and give her the inspiration to create, not just with paint brushes but with squeeze bottles, gloss paint and acrylic inks. Using these tools gives her the opportunity to create lines and marks with less control, giving it more of an abstract feel. After the more structured content comes the unrestrained, spontaneous splashes of ink which drop onto the canvas and intertwine when water is added, settling in the textured areas creating pools of colour.
The Apex Gallery opens from Mon to Sat 10am5pm, Sun 10am -4 pm. Occasionally, the art gallery is closed to the public. If you are travelling specifically to see an exhibition, please call the Box office on 01284 758000 before your visit. The Apex Gallery is situated on the first floor. Drinks bought from Aspretto in the foyer can be taken upstairs, so feel free to relax on the sofas with a drink and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION Tuesday 20 August Sunday 15 September Bury St Edmunds and Beyond and The Apex Gallery has teamed up to host a Photography Competition which will culminate in an exhibition from Tuesday 20 August to Sunday 15 September. Find out how to enter on page 40.
UNLOCKING Tuesday 25 June – Sunday 21 July Nature, landscape and opening the mind. In this body of work Pandora Butterfield offers an interpretation of her surroundings for others to explore. The focus on the Suffolk landscape deliberately gives this work a sense of place, an essential element in the quest to belong. MARTIN WARNER – A NEW EXHIBITION OF PORTRAITS Tuesday 23 July – Sunday 18 August Local Artist Martin Warner is showcasing his last two years of portrait studies. Using oils and acrylic techniques, his work is often dramatic, aimed at capturing the essence of both famous and not-so-famous characters. Taking up art less than ten years ago, he studied for an MA in Fine Art in Hertfordshire before moving to Suffolk two years ago. The exhibition supports the Samaritans charity in Bury St Edmunds.
JOHN POLLARD AND STEPHEN BUTLER Tuesday 23 July – Sunday 18 August Each work by John Pollard is a uniquely created ‘abstract’ world, full of complexity and diversity. John aims to create work that continues to give the viewer an ongoing enriching relationship. Steve Butler sees painting as a process of adjusting and balancing (or deliberate unbalancing) until he arrives at something which seems ‘right’. Steve often tries to use quirks of perspective or other deliberately puzzling elements to make them less straightforwardly legible. They are, after all, not naturalistic scenes and so do not have to behave like real landscapes.

KENTWELL HALL THE FULLY MOATED HISTORIC TUDOR HOUSE will be open throughout the summer, with a busy and exciting calendar of events scheduled. Explore the house and over 30 acres of extensive gardens, woodland trails and parkland. Despite its size Kentwell Hall is very relaxed, and is mixed with an individuality created by its current owners that is not often seen these days in great historic venues. This year Kentwell has a new outdoor children’s games area, although we are not sure who will have the most fun; adults or kids! There is an obstacle course, in addition to the ever popular Story Book Trail. There will be lots of new colour in the gardens from the “Celebration of Poppies” that will flower from May - August, the giant Sunflowers from June and the Pumpkin Patch from August. For full details of all events, opening dates and times please visit; www.kentwell.co.uk

WALK THROUGH 1,000 YEARS OF HISTORY Enjoy a guided tour of Bury St Edmunds this summertime
SUMMER IS THE IDEAL TIME to stroll through over 1,000 years of history in one of Suffolk’s oldest towns. Bury St Edmunds is home to a ruined abbey which once housed the shrine of England’s patron saint. He was King Edmund, who was martyred nearby and whose body was brought to the town’s monastery. For centuries it was one of Europe’s most important religious sites. A 90-minute walk through the abbey grounds and the town’s medieval heart with one of Bury St Edmunds’ Blue Badge and Green Badge guides will bring history alive. Marvel at Norman architecture, hear why monarchs were frequent visitors, and learn about murders, riots and rebellions. What part did Bury St Edmunds play in Magna Carta? Which queen is buried here? Where did Charles Dickens stay? Your guide has the answers. Special themed tours include ‘Crime and Punishment’ (not for the faint-hearted!) on May 10 and ‘Georgian Bury’ (the buildings and the people who lived in them) on June 14, with many more on offer to pre-booked groups, from ‘Inns and Ale-houses’ to ‘Bury at War’ (visit the website for a full list). The Bury Festival features ‘Hysterical Bury St Edmunds’ (for family groups with children aged six upwards) on May 18, ‘The Long and the Short of it’ (Brackland’s hidden secrets) on May 19, ‘Beating the Bounds’ (exploring the Abbey site’s boundary) on May 25, and ‘A Sideways Look’ (oddities and curiosities) on May 26. Daily tours start at the Tourist Information Centre on Angel Hill at 2 pm all through the summer. There are also 11am tours in July, August and September. Book at burystedmundstourguides.org
