HELLO, AND WELCOME to the autumn/winter 2019 edition of the What’s On West Suffolk Magazine. The days may be getting shorter, but there’s definitely not a shortage of fun events happening across the region! The start of autumn means the annual Sci-Fi exhibition will return to Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds. This year the theme is ‘May the toys be with you’ – an exhibition featuring the UK’s finest collections of vintage Star Ways toys and memorabilia. There will be plenty to entertain the whole family during this intergenerational, intergalactic event! Other highlights of the season include the Lavenham Literary Festival, which will run from 15-17 November, and the Heritage Open Days from 13-22 September.
And then of course it will soon be that time of year again when the autumn leaves make way for festive lights and decorations. The incredibly popular Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre will be held between 21 to 24 November and include over 300 stalls selling gift ideas, arts and crafts as well as tasty food and some winter warming drinks. There will also be children’s entertainment, games and funfair rides. You can find out more about all the events running across West Suffolk online at www.whatsonwestsuffolk.co.uk. WINTER WILDLIFE SPOTTING
Wrap up warm and head out into our parks this season to spot wonderful winter wildlife that’s right on our doorstep. Here’s what to look out for:
1. BADGERS Badgers have been spotted on camera at Nowton Park. Badgers do not hibernate, so look out for their tracks in the mud or soft ground. 2. FOXES Foxes are nocturnal, but you may catch a glimpse of their red fur as they dart through the trees in one of our parks, if you’re very lucky! As mating season begins they will be more active during the day.
3. BARN OWL During the winter the barn owl extends its
hunting to the daylight hours. One was spotted in West Stow Country Park in the springtime and our photographer managed to capture its beauty.
4. MUNTJAC DEER Muntjac can be seen in the parks all year round, but they are a well worth spotting!

DON’T FORGET THE HEDGEHOGS! HEDGEHOGS hibernate through the winter – and you can help them to find a cosy place to sleep by building a hog house in your garden. There are many ways to make a hog house. You can make one from wooden crates or boxes, or buy a ready-made one online. But for maximum fun this season grab a cardboard box and make one as a family. Cut slits in each side to allow the air to circulate, and a hole in the front for an entrance. Place the box in a quiet, sheltered part of the garden and cover with a plastic sheet to stop it from getting wet. Next, pile on moss, dry grass, leaves and twigs to cover the house and make it look attractive to your new hedgehog friends. Pop in some dry leaves or straw to keep them warm inside. Lastly, leave out a little dish of water and some meaty flavoured cat or dog food that they can nibble on. They also like sunflower seeds. Remember to replace the house each year with a new one.
5. BIRDS! It’s important that the birds aren’t forgotten about
in the winter months when searching for food becomes tougher. You may see greater spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers, bullfinch, pheasants and many more in our parks! 05

AUTUMN RAMBLE – A GUIDED WALK
EAST TOWN PARK SUN 15 SEPT The guided walk is part of the Heritage Open Days event and will involve a 6.5 mile walk through the countryside around Haverhill, passing through Sturmer and Kedington. The ranger will point out wildlife and features of interest along the way. Option to stop for a pub lunch or bring a picnic. This free walk will start from the East Town Park Visitor Centre at 10am and last three to four hours. 06
BRANDON COUNTRY PARK SAT 21 SEPT This September will see Brandon Country Park play host to the ‘Tales and Trails’ festival which will bring amazing art, and environmentally friendly crafts and activities to the park. There’ll also be a series of exciting trails to help you explore this beautiful park alongside craft stalls and food outlets! The festival, which is suitable for all ages, is led by the Brandon Creative Forum, a group of local volunteers brought together by Market Place, who are celebrating creativity within the local community. www.cppmarketplace.co.uk/home.htm

ON SEPTEMBER 21, FROM A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY, comes an absolute must see for fans of Star Wars and the silver screen. One of the UK’s finest collections of vintage Star Wars toys and original cinema posters is going on display in a stunning exhibition brought to you by West Suffolk Council. Back when the movie Star Wars broke box office records in 1977 no one could have predicted that the merchandising would go on to earn even more than the film itself. The toys of Star Wars took the world by storm and became the musthave playthings for an entire generation. From 1977 - 1985 an estimated 300 million action figures were sold, allowing children to re-enact the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo. ‘May The Toys Be With You’ is both a celebration of the now highly collectable vintage toy line and also of the iconic design work and art of the Star Wars movies. From X-Wing Fighters to lightsabers, these fantastical designs have fired our imaginations and stamped their place on our cultural landscape. For little kids and ‘big kids’ alike this is an unmissable opportunity to view many rarely seen Star Wars treasures, and young Jedi may even have an opportunity to dress up and wield a lightsaber themselves! This exhibition has broken visitor attendance records at a host of museums around the country, and we’re excited for its first visit to Bury St Edmunds. ICKWORTH AN ITALIANATE PALACE IN THIS AUTUMN DISCOVER the vast beauty that surrounds Ickworth through the woods and parkland and celebrate the Roots of Ickworth. KENTWELL HALL THE VISITOR SEASON NEVER ENDS at the independently and privately owned Kentwell Hall that is located in the picturesque village of Long Melford. This wonderful, romantic Tudor house with acres of beautiful and interesting gardens, is best known for its re-creations including Tudor specific, period living and WWI & WWII. Kentwell’s signature event ‘Tudor HandOn’s’ with over 250 Tudor volunteers took place over a 10 day period during August. The Hall then moves on to its last Tudor weekend of the year; Michaelmas (21 and 22 September) which is a celebration of a good harvest that will see them through the harsh winter months. During October, Kentwell Hall becomes “Scaresville - The Haunted Village.” It is East Anglia’s premier five star scare attraction with visitors coming from all over the UK. If you have not been before, you will experience an hour of pure adrenaline as you journey over open land and through
woodlands, but watch out for ghosts, ghouls and other creatures that stalk the night. Whilst Scaresville is for adults, during October Half Term, children can enjoy the brilliant and entertaining Halloweenies School for Sorcery, between 19 - 27 October. Learn the art of wizards, magicians and sorcerers and have hours of Halloween fun and games. Kentwell’s finale of the year is the Dickensian Christmas re-creation that offers something for the whole family. The house will be decorated in traditional Victorian splendour, and there will be entertainment throughout the day in The Victorian Tavern and Music Hall. The display of drawings by George Stubbs, one of Britain’s most renowned animal painters, is on display until the 28th September and the chance to view the works, on loan from the Yale Centre for British Art, is included in the general admission. The venue also offers visitors the experience of meeting retired racehorses
during daily demonstrations at the flagship yard of the Retraining of Racehorses. Palace House is open all year round and is also home to The Tack Room restaurant. The National Stud Discover Newmarket’s popular Tours of The National Stud will be running until October this year and it’s a great chance to see some of the Southern Hemisphere foals that have been born there in recent weeks. There’s also the opportunity to meet the retired legends Lord Windermere, a past Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and Jack The Giant, another distinguished performer on the track who also had a successful career after racing as part of the Retraining of Racehorses. CELEBRATE YOUR LIBRARY SERVICE! Suffolk Libraries is holding a special celebration to highlight our library service and to encourage people to show their support YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY SERVICE offers much more than you might think and impacts Suffolk life in many ways.
Suffolk Libraries Day We have something to be proud of in Suffolk. Despite challenging financial circumstances, all 44 of our libraries remain open. These libraries, plus the mobile library service are now run by a charity - Suffolk Libraries. Suffolk Libraries needs the continued support of local people to carry on making the difference it does in people’s lives. That’s why Saturday 12 October 2019 will be the first ever Suffolk Libraries Day, raising awareness of the impact libraries make in the community and, crucially,
raising money to help support the service. There will be a range of activities and events at libraries and, during the week before, a sponsored Book Journey Challenge. This will involve a copy of ‘The Huntingfield Paintress’ by Pamela Holmes, which is set in Suffolk, making its way between all 44 libraries – a journey of 323 miles! Bury St Edmunds Library will be joining in and will be offering: •sponsored librarian experiences •a choose your own book display •a sponsor the alphabet activity Plus there will be many other ways to show support. Welcome to the UK! Is this your first time performing here? Thank you, delighted to be here. My first public performances here were in the autumn of 2017 – we had four sold-out concerts. We opened the Cambridge Jazz Festival – I can never forget experiencing the beauty of Kings College Chapel – and then two nights launching the London Jazz Festival. You are a very successful award winner in the USA and have recorded many top selling albums. Where did your musical life start? Ha… well, thank you for reminding me about the awards and such! Like many vocalists, my musical life started in school and church choirs. But I hadn’t thought of a
career in music until a DJ invited me to record house music during my college years. It was actually at that first performance at a rave when I discovered I wanted to sing professionally and just get better at my craft. I’ve been a full-time musician since 2001; my first full-length, international release was in 2004 and I have a total of seven albums. Aretha Franklin was listed by Billboard magazine as the greatest singer of all time and named the Queen of Soul. What can your audiences expect at your concerts? No pressure, right? They can expect a musical celebration of ReRe through some of the best soul songs ever recorded. And, you can’t honour Aretha without giving her RESPECT. So, you can count on that and we will definitely hit at least one of her gospel tunes. We plan on spanning her repertoire, which included gospel, blues, jazz, soul and pop.

ALAN JOHNSON JUST HOW DOES AN ORPHAN, growing up in a poverty-stricken west London slum, become one of the most important and influential politicians of his generation? Alan Johnson, the former postmanturned-home secretary (and selfproclaimed ‘failed rock star’), has become a best-selling author, and will lift the lid on his remarkable journey on 16 December. Inspired by his latest book ‘In My Life’, this highly entertaining show tells Alan’s personal story, with the help of some of the music that has sound-tracked his life. “First and foremost, it’s about me; memories of my childhood, life growing up 32
in the 1950s, the people and places which have played a significant role in making me who I am today . . . with plenty of comedy, and music,” he explains. “Music has played such an important part in my life. In my teenage years, I certainly wasn’t harbouring any ambitions to be a politician – oh no, I just wanted to be a rock star.” As a songwriter and a guitarist, Alan was part of two swinging sixties bands, The Vampires and The Area, playing gigs around London. He even recorded a single, ‘Hard Life’, which was hawked around several record labels. Alan’s memoirs have received numerous
awards and sold more than half a million copies, since his debut book in 2013. He says: “I’ve not written these books to try to score any sort of political advantage; that’s not my style. With my mum dying when I was very young, the opportunity to make her live again on the page was a real incentive.” SO WHAT EXACTLY CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THE SHOW? “Nostalgia, some light-hearted comedy, and lots of talk about music, that’s for sure. There will be excerpts from many of the songs which have a particular resonance to the stories I tell, as I reflect on some of the key moments of my life.” These include his early years, the death of Alan’s mother when he was just 13 years old; all those teenage musical dreams; stacking shelves at Tesco; his Post Office work which led to him becoming the youngest ever general secretary of the Union of Communication Workers; being elected to parliament; and holding three of the most important cabinet posts – Education Secretary, Health Secretary and Home Secretary. He says: “If people want to talk to me on the tour about my time in Government, of course I’ll be happy to share some of the stories. But I’m not really interested in any heavyweight blow-for-blow accounts of the rights and wrongs of things.” “Politics is not like it was in the old days. When a general election came round, if you wanted to connect with people, you had to stand in front of them in rallies at community halls. But that age of public meetings has gone.” However, he is enjoying the new lease of life as a raconteur, and getting the chance to re-visit many parts of the country with which he became familiar during his postal union travels. “I get a great thrill out of writing, and really do enjoy taking my story out onto the stage and talking to people about it. So this is a very different way of getting to meet and interact with people around different parts of the country.”

And I was picked up by a nice old lady who looked after me and I’ve never forgotten that. ‘My Father is a Polar Bear’ is the story of the father that I had, but never had, in the sense that he left the house when I was one and half, so I never knew him.
Your 75th Anniversary tour sees you telling your own story, are you comfortable talking about yourself? I’m very comfortable talking about my own life and I’ve used that hugely in my stories. At the beginning of the Butterfly Lion, the
You’ve spoken about writing in terms of magic… It’s the story that is magic rather than the writing. A good magician can convince the audience that what is happening is real. The way I do it is to believe it myself as I’m telling it, writing it. And you’ve described yourself as more storyteller than writer... what’s the difference? I suppose I always think of the best writing as great literature - Dickens, Shakespeare, Seamus Heaney, etc. Some of them are also wonderful storytellers. I tell stories much more directly than great writers usually do. I tell the story out loud. I think I do this because the first stories I ever told were to the primary school class that I taught. I try not to think of myself as a writer but as a teller of tales; with the sound of the words being hugely important.
War Horse is now a huge theatre and film success, but how well was the book received, when it came out back in 1982? It sold reasonably well, but nothing spectacular - a few thousand copies a year. Everything that has happened to War Horse since has been unbelievable, a huge piece of luck. How did you feel when National Theatre wanted to turn War Horse into a play? I was sceptical at first. I wondered how convincing a First World War drama could be using life-size puppets of horses. But this was the National Theatre after all. They came to Devon to see the landscape and watch working horses; they spent time with the Royal Horse Artillery and learnt about cavalry horses and soldiers. Press night was a triumph, with five star reviews, and it has been running for nearly 10 years now. I have seen the play countless times and it always amazes me what the National Theatre have created from my book ground-breaking theatre and a wonderful anthem for peace.

These events will put a spotlight on those that have saved buildings, created green spaces, produced campaigns and made their voices heard.

MILDENHALL & DISTRICT MUSEUM AND GUIDED WALK Visit the museum and go on a guided walk through the medieval market place to the church and back. Mildenhall Museum has something for everyone from its pre-history room with flints and fossils to its 1950’s community room. Sunday 15th September, from 2pm. THE RISE & FALL OF ROUGHAM HALL An introductory historical talk by George Agnew in the Meadow Room at Blackthorpe Barn followed by a two hour walk to the ruins of Rougham Hall and back, seeing parts of the old parkland and gardens on Sunday 15 September.

SUFFOLK REGIMENT MUSEUM GUIDED TOUR OF THE ATHENAEUM A guided walk around a stunning building which has hosted social events in Bury St Edmunds for over 300 years. On Sunday 15 September take the 45 minute tour at 11am, 1pm or 3pm.
DISSENT, RIOT AND REBELLION (A GUIDED WALK), BURY ST EDMUNDS Discover all about Bury St Edmunds’ riotous history on this walk from the war memorial on Angel Hill. Learn how the Abbey ruled every aspect of the town life and onwards through the turbulent events for the next seven centuries, much of it featuring wellknown buildings that still stand today. Sat 14 and Sun 22 September at 10:30am.
THE JOCKEY CLUB ROOMS TOUR Guests will be able to enjoy a guided viewing of the collection of sporting art and memorabilia. Learn about the illustrious history of The Jockey Club and the sport of horseracing on Saturday 14 September at 10am or 11:30am. FIRE STATION TOUR Join the firefighters for a tour of the fire station and viewing of fire appliances and equipment on Sunday 15 September or Wednesday 18 September. The trained fire crews will give visitors a tour of the fire station seeing the fire engines that are used.

ANCIENT LIBRARY TOUR Come and learn more about the Ancient Library and the manuscripts in the Cathedral’s collection. Time for a ghostly tour of Bury St Edmunds The Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides turn spooky at this time of year! WITH DARKER EVENINGS approaching fast, it will soon be time for those with a love of the supernatural to experience one of the ever-popular ‘Ghostly and Macabre’ tours of Bury St Edmunds. But with a haunted churchyard and tales of ghostly apparitions, witchcraft, murders and unexplained happenings, it is not for the fainthearted. The town has had its fair share of dastardly deeds committed, with the perpetrators often coming to a sticky end. The tours are once a fortnight, on Friday evenings from October to March, starting at 6.30pm. For those who prefer to see the town in daylight there are daily tours at 11 am and 2 pm until the end of September, and then at 2 pm until the end of October. Explore the ruins of the abbey, for centuries one of Europe’s most important religious sites. Home to the shrine of England’s patron saint, who gave his name to the town, it was a magnet for thousands of pilgrims. Kings and queens were frequent visitors, but there is also a darker side to the town’s history, with riots, rebellions and murders. The daily tour covers more than 1,000 years of history¸ from King Edmund’s martyrdom to the growth in the power and wealth of the abbey, and its eventual destruction. The town’s architecture includes fine examples of Norman buildings, wonderfully preserved timberframed houses, Georgian homes and Victorian splendour. The 90-minute walk in the company of one of Bury St Edmunds’ qualified guides is a chance to learn about the important part that Bury St Edmunds played in Magna Carta, and to discover why a queen is buried here, as well as hearing about its more recent history. The seasonal sparkle of the BURY ST EDMUNDS CHRISTMAS FAYRE is almost here. Start your celebrations in style at the fabulous, friendly, festive fayre which runs from 21 to 24 November. START YOUR CELEBRATIONS in style at the fabulous, friendly, festive fayre which runs from 21 to 24 November. Organised by West Suffolk Council, the Christmas Fayre is designed not only to provide a boost to the local economy by attracting visitors from far and wide, but it is also a fun, festive event that many local residents and businesses can get involved in and people of all ages can enjoy. This year’s fayre begins from midday on the Thursday. New for this year will be a Thursday market from 12-6pm on The Buttermarket featuring local producers, crafts and regular market stalls. Local families will enjoy watching their loved ones take part in the opening night parade while many school children will take to the stage over the weekend to perform as part of our series of musical entertainment. Community choirs, groups and bands will also perform during the four day fayre. Opening night also includes late night shopping, an East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Carol Concert in St Edmundsbury Cathedral at 6pm and a fabulous fire work display in the Abbey Gardens at around 7.45pm. The Christmas Fayre resumes from 9am to 8pm on the Friday and Saturday, and from 10am to 5pm on the Sunday. There will be more than 300 stalls selling gift ideas, arts and crafts as well as tasty food and some winter warming drinks. There will also be children’s entertainment, games and funfair rides. Foodies will love the St Edmundsbury Cathedral Courtyard where we will have the Infusion Cookery Theatre giving live cookery demonstrations and some delicious samples to enjoy. Nearby The Athenaeum will be selling handmade gifts, fine art, jewellery and cards. In The Apex there
will be a mix of football stadium, film and sport memorabilia, alongside original Suffolk paintings and traditional hobby horses. The town’s traditional street market will be on from Friday to Sunday while there will also be a food and cookware market taking place on the Sunday. Many of the independent shops around the town will be joining in the fun. Look out for details in the local press and on the Christmas Fayre website nearer the time. A Park and Ride service will be in operation from the Friday through to the Sunday evening. Park and Walk also offers a simpler route to the fayre – the Council’s car park in Olding Road is only 15 minutes from the fayre and will be available on the Saturday and Sunday. Greene King and West Suffolk College’s car parks will also be available during the weekend of the fayre. Family saver tickets are available for those coming in by train. Bus services will also be in operation throughout the fayre. For those driving, tune in to Radio West Suffolk fm 103.3. The station will be providing regular updates on where to park, while Twitter followers of @ West_Suffolk can keep up to date with live updates on #buryparking

▲ BURY ST EDMUNDS AND BEYOND Photographic Exhibition Until 15 September The winning and commended photographs from the Bury St Edmunds and Beyond photographic competition 2019 will be displayed at The Apex Gallery until the 15 September. The entrants were asked to supply their best photograph of either an iconic building in the area, the Abbey of St Edmunds, an outdoor space, local village or night time shot. The competition, which took place earlier in the summer, received a huge number of entries from local photographers. The lucky overall adult winner of the competition took home a camera worth £350 while the overall child winner received a photographic experience with the Jessops Academy worth £125, both courtesy of the competition sponsor Jessops. Come along to see the creative talent that we have in our area – the photographs are sure to conjure up memories of local places. 50

▲ KINGS ELY SCHOOL Tuesday 17 September – Sunday 13 October The exhibition will show a broad range of GSCE and A Level Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art and Photography. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the talents of young, local, up and coming artists.
100 YEARS OF MILDENHALL’S MILL ST AND HIGH ST Tuesday 29 October – Sunday 17 November In response to a Market Place (Arts Council) initiative in 2017, offering matched funding to bring local art related projects to the seven Fenland Market Towns, the Mildenhall Art Forum successfully proposed a project to research 100 years of history in buildings in Mildenhall’s High Street and Mill Street and to present the outcomes in the form of ceramic art and a short history trail leaflet. The two lead artists, Carla Low at DKWs Ceramics and Tabitha Nolan at Tabstract, both have studios in the town. From the many to choose from, ten buildings were selected and those living or working in them became the main focus for the project. Local residents were invited to attend free workshops to learn these new skills. Over 100 people of all ages and abilities joined in the mosaic workshops which were held in several different locations during 2017 and 2018. Many people brought their artefacts, photographs and memories which were used in the research and are interpreted here in mosaic form. These permanent art pieces have been shown elsewhere, and following this event at The Apex, they will be returned to their artists.
