Never say no: advice from the man with 46 years of experience

The Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) is the amount of capital

equipment a business can purchase and be able to claim all related tax benefits in the year the assets were purchased. The effect is to bring immediate tax relief on capital expenditure that would otherwise take many years to recover and as such it has acted as a powerful incentive for businesses looking to bring forward investment decisions.

So, what difference will It make? Firstly, to benefit from

£1,000,000 of potential tax relief a business must be making a pre-tax profit of at least £1,000,000, so many SMEs will not be able to take the full benefit of the extra allowance. For larger businesses that are looking to reduce their short-term tax liability, the new allowance should stimulate investment. It is worth repeating that the allowances apply both to equipment purchased outright and equipment subject to Hire Purchase agreements with the latter giving businesses immediate tax relief whilst spreading the cost of acquisition over an agreed period, typically between two and seven years.

Whilst the AIA is allocated by calendar year (January to December), the ability of a business to maximise tax saving will depend on how much qualifying investment is made in its financial year. A business will have to allocate 2019’s £1,000,000 allowance according to its own financial year. So, if a business has a year end of 31 December 2019, the calculation is straight forward as the financial year and AIA cover identical timescales and the business will have the full £1,000,000 allowance available for immediate tax relief. For any business that wishes to take full advantage of their available AIA but avoid an immediate cash outlay, a Hire Purchase agreement is the ideal solution.

About Construction Plant Finance.

Headquartered in Hampshire, Construction Plant Finance is the first independent finance company to be introduced solely for the construction plant and equipment sector since 1997, that is neither owned by a bank or linked to a manufacturer. Stolen Plant on the rise

Engcon continues to be a favourite

P

lant Planet has received news of two stolen Plant near the New Forest, Hampshire. The Komatsu Mini Digger PC 1.8 MR and Twaites 1 Tonne Dumper, which have been working on a site near Fordham Bridge, were last seen around 5.30am on the 4th March by neighbours who thought Plant Operators had gone to move the machinery to an alternate site. Owners Paul and Zoe Wiseman are understandably devastated by the theft as the machines have been owned since new in 2007. Paul Wiseman said ‘when I got to the site on Tuesday morning, the gate had been torched off and both machines were gone’ adding, ‘when they’re your own you look after them more, this kind of thing is rife at the moment’. Wiseman’s statement refers to the rise in Plant Machinery theft over the last five years. Theft of Plant Machinery such as this can ruin small businesses such as the Wisemans’ who intend to do everything possible to find the two machines. Both machines have been reported as stolen. Plant Dealers are asked to stay aware of the thefts, and report any suspicions to Plant Planet Ltd. The details of the machines are as follows: KOMATSU MINI DIGGER PC 1.8 MR ENGINE NUMBER: 7D0031 SERIAL NUMBER: 17789 YEAR 2007 TWAITS DUMPER 1 TONNE YEAR 2007 The Wisemans are offering a reward if the items are recovered.

Cat release new tiltrotator

T

he new TRS23 is available with pinon and coupler interfaces for handling a range of grading and trenching buckets (with CW-, CWs-, or S-coupler tops and bottoms), and an available swivel can operate such work tools as compactors and grapples. An optional grapple module allows picking and placing material without changing work tools. SecureLock™ ensures a positive tiltrotator connection to the carrier by using both hydraulic and mechanical locking mechanisms, as well as a sensor-based confirmation system with audible signals and visual in-cab indicators. Integral load holding valves are designed to maintain cylinder stability and to secure loads, even if lines are cut. Long term reliability and durability for the TRS23 result from the heavy duty bolted joint that secures the housing, rotator, and coupler as a unit. The worm gear drive is designed with wide bearing surfaces that distribute excavation forces in all directions. In addition, the gear drive is submersed in oil to ensure positive lubrication in all operating conditions. Pins, shafts, and bushings feature heavy duty construction, and the hydraulic rotator motor is protected inside the cast rotator housing. “Smart functions” for the tiltrotator include bucket pulse, designed to automatically spread material evenly and quickly. Optional RPS sensors track the position of the tiltrotator, showing data on the in-cab monitor, as well as sharing information with grade control systems.

6 • April 19 • Plant Planet

For precise attachment control, the TRS23 allows “home” positions to be stored for returning the tiltrotator (with the press of a button) to a user-defined position. The Innovative Lubrication System (ILS) simplifies daily maintenance, allowing the tiltrotator to be greased from one location or connected to the machine’s automatic lubrication system.

xcavator Operator Shawn Powell started his landscaping and building firm in 2004. Subsequently, he has grown his business to a medium-sized firm, with workload split across all aspects of building and landscaping. Shawn himself operates a 9 tonne Volvo ECR88D with Triple Articulating Boom, bought in October 2018 – a high spec machine. This is Shawn’s first brand new excavator, and an investment close to his heart. However, when it came to adding to his kit, Shawn had his mind set on Engcon. Although Volvo put together a good package for him, Shawn was impressed by information available online. In fact, Shawn chose Engcon after watching YouTube testimonials from Engcon users, following forums, reading reviews and talking to other users. It also helped that the Engcon office is close by. Shawn said: “Engcon fitted my Volvo with a tiltrotator, QS45 hitch with EC-Oil as standard, and full DC2 controls with Mig2 Joysticks incorporating roller operated tracking. I also chose to get a full set of buckets, some pallet forks and a SK10 sorting grab, I couldn’t hen happier,” Shawn explained. “Since meeting the guys at Engcon’s base in Tewkesbury, I have found them to be incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. In fact, from the first meeting until the day I picked up my kit, I found Engcon’s service to be excellent, supporting me and my business.”

Worsley Plant supply Rotar equipment for Leeds demo A

huge manufacturing facility at Cross Gates, Leeds, has recently been victim to the “Red Crush” of Rotar demolition equipment. The facility had been used in the manufacture of industrial machinery and had lain empty for almost a decade, with the production lines moved up to another factory at Newcastle. Professional Group were the recipients of the order to demolish and remediate the land and have been using the services of their trusted and extremely capable sub-contractor Skillings Crushing to undertake the work. Skillings operate a small fleet of excavators dedicated to heavy demolition operations especially the removal and processing of heavy concrete structures. The longevity and reliability of their

Plant and attachments plays a huge role in the company’s purchasing decisions. Looking to ensure their operations are carried out efficiently, Skillings have been purchasing attachments from Cheshire based Rotar dealer Worsley Plant for a number of years and have again invested in a number of items for use on the project. “We look at what offers the best overall value for our business every time we go to the market.” David Skillings explains “The attachment has to provide us with a solid build and the productivity we require from day one.” The most recent arrival to the growing armoury of attachments is a new Rotar RSS50 steel shear. The 6.1 tonne tool joins its smaller RSS30 and 40 shears within the fleet and was purchased specifically for the project. “The steel has been plated over in some cases around the Plant and while the smaller shears would have coped with them, we thought the larger shear would increase our productivity and decrease the time taken to process the material.” David commented.

Mounted with OilQuick couplings, the shears are handled by the company’s fleet of Volvo and Liebherr excavators with the new RSS50 being the sole property of the largest excavator in the fleet, a Liebherr R 960 SME. “We have had the machine built specifically to take our larger attachments.” David commented “There is a lot of leverage on the machine with a shear of this size and power.” At almost 4m in length, the RSS50 generates a cutting force of 955 tonnes in the throat with a piercing force of over 200 tonnes at the tip. To generate these market leading forces a dedicated drain line has been fitted to the machine to enable the required oil flow of 450l/m to be obtained and maintained. “The oil coming to the attachment will be cooler and therefore have a lower viscosity.” Sean Heron, MD of Worsley Plant points out. “This will ensure the attachment operates quicker and more productively.” Mounted to the 62t Liebherr excavator, the RSS50 is seen by operator Ian Watkinson as

Press Release an ideal tool for taking the heavy steel structure down. With the smaller roof trusses removed using the company’s high reach machine, the larger steel stanchions are handled by the RSS50. The Liebherr handles the large shear with ease with the additional length of the tool giving the machine a reach of almost 11m enabling Ian to take the outer bays of the shed down with ease. Whilst the shears in the fleet are coping admirably with taking the structure down, the Skillings team also use a number of Rotar selector grabs to undertake some of the demolition operations including loading the processed steel and the clearing and stacking of materials around the site. “The grabs a very well built.” David comments “We have a number of them on the fleet and they have proved to be a reliable attachment.” Another plus point for Skillings is the exemplary back up and service they have received from Worsley. “We cannot fault their commitment to giving their customers a first-class installation and maintenance service.” David commented “There is always someone at the end of the phone that can help you and the lads that look after the kit on site are amongst the best in the industry. This is why we keep going back to them.”

The most recent arrival to the growing armoury of attachments is a new Rotar RSS50 steel shear.

New Soil Compactors Feature Reduced Operating Costs

L

ANGENTHAL, Switzerland – Ammann announces the release of a new line of soil compactors that provide substantial sustainability benefits, lower operating costs and powerful compaction output. The Ammann ARS Soil Compactors also offer a host of features that make operation intuitive and the machines more manoeuvrable. The new soil compactors are the ARS 70, ARS 110, ARS 130, ARS 150 and ARS 170. “New machines are developed to deliver solutions to our customers,” said Vlasta Medek, Global Commercial Compaction. “That is always our goal.” The new generation of ARS Soil Compactors feature new technological solutions that are more productive, meet the latest emissions standards, reduce fuel usage and provide valuable data that actually eliminates unnecessary passes of the machines on jobsites. The compactors are also extremely manoeuvrable and stable thanks to the no-rear-axle structure. The ARS series provides these new features while continuing to deliver the powerful compaction output owners of Ammann rollers have come to expect. A variable range of frequencies and centrifugal forces provide the required compaction ability and make the machines productive in many applications – and on varied materials and compaction thicknesses.

Sustainability and Reduced Operating Costs Sustainability efforts centre on the new ECOdrop initiative that is being utilised across the Ammann product line. Among

the benefits of ECOdrop are improved machine serviceability with optimised service points and engine efficiency that leads to lower fuel costs. Hydraulic and vibratory components have been optimised to reduce the fluids required to run the systems while retaining high power output. “The savings with ECOdrop are substantial,” said Medek. “For example, with the ARS 70, fuel consumption dropped 22 per cent. The required hydraulic oil dropped by 26 per cent and the oil needed in the vibratory system was reduced by 10 per cent. Customers therefore can expect a corresponding drop in the costs of fluid acquisition and disposal.” The new series of soil compactors meets the tightest emissions regulations. Standard on the ARS 70 is the Kubota V3307-CR-TE4 diesel engine. The Deutz TCD3.6L4 engine is standard on the ARS 110 and ARS 130; the Deutz TCD4.1L4 is standard on the ARS 150 and ARS 170.

Manoeuvrability

previous generation. The turning radius is improved 20 per cent (from 3200 mm to 2580 mm) because of optimised weight distribution, improved stability and a new maintenance-free articulation joint. For the other new ARS Soil Compactors, the average turning radius is tighter by 3 per cent (an average reduction of 100 mm from the previous generation). Machine length is reduced an average of 170 mm.

Intuitive Operation The premium, comfortable cab has an extremely low sound level and integrated ROPS frame. The multi-functional machine display, which is now integrated into the steering wheel, gives the operator a quick and easy overview of key indicators including oil pressure, engine temperature, fluid levels – and more. The machines’ 360° visibility maximises performance and delivers the highest safety standards.

Serviceability

The rollers are extremely compact because of the innovative no-rear-axle concept, which efficiently positions the engine, coolers, liquid tanks and hydraulic components in the engine compartment. All these new design innovations enable a unique range of new technical advantages – manoeuvrability chief among them.

Service is easy, thanks to a wide-opening rear engine hood. A tiltable cab on the ARS 110-170 enables exceptional access to the main hydraulic components, which significantly reduces labour. Filling and draining ports are centralised for fast and easy fluid exchanges. All major filters and the cooling system are extremely accessible as well.

“These modifications help the operator perform on jobsites where manoeuvrability is essential,” said Medek.

Additional Features

The ARS 70, the smallest machine in the new line, is one of the most manoeuvrable compactors on the market. It is a full 845 mm – or 16 per cent – shorter than the

The proprietary ACEforce Intelligent Compaction system measures absolute compaction and improves efficiency and quality. Optional documentation is available as well.

ick Gaffney (86) of Cosham Plant Hire, Cosham, has been in the Plant Machinery industry for over 46 years. His business, located at a depot just outside of Portsmouth, hires Plant Machinery across Hampshire and West Sussex. Plant Planet visited Cosham Plant in March to talk all things machine.

Mick Gaffney started his career in the Plant Machinery Industry in Ascot over 40 years ago. Having worked for another company as a general foreman on a construction site, hiring in Plant for on-site use, he decided to buy his own machinery and start a hire business of his own. ‘I didn’t have much Plant, just one 360 degree machine’ says Mick. The excavator in question, a Hymac, was bought by Mick after it was rolled on site whilst owned by another company. Although the machine had no problems starting up, the company that had owned it wouldn’t use it without the machine going through checks. Mick, who had been working on the site at the time, offered to take the excavator off their hands and have it checked over. After passing the checks, the machine lasted two years before Mick traded it in for his first Hyundai: ‘I was just in the right place at the right time,’ he says. Mick started his Plant Hire business while still working in his role as a general foreman, ‘As soon as I came back from work, I’d be off out and delivering people bits of Plant’ he says, adding, ‘I could be out until 1am’.

Three years later, Mick turned down a promotion to focus on his business, buying three excavators: 13tonne, 9tonne, and 5tonne Catterpillars. Along side Plant Hire, Mick would also provide ground-working services. The current depot in Havant has been occupied by Cosham Plant for 14 years. His fleet of 4 has expanded considerably, with 100 machines available for hire. A self-confessed Hitachi fan, Mick talks about the machines in his fleet today. ‘I’m all about Hitachi’ he says, ‘they’re good machines, my drivers like them, and they hold their value.’ Mick purchases machines new, keeping them on for four years before selling them on.

Besides Hitachi, Cosham Plant Hire has just taken delivery of two 13t JCB, and CAT micro diggers. The most popular machines in the fleet are the 13t excavators. With two in the yard, Mick explains that one has been painted pink to support breast cancer awareness (pictured above). Cosham Plant hires out their machinery with two options for customers: with an operator or self-drive. In recent years, Mick has seen a rise in the amount of customers opting for self-drive, stating ‘It’s all about this ticket. If you’re looking to go for a proper [operating test] it’s too expensive. ‘A lot of companies are accepting NPOR’s tickets, that will cost you much less to get put through training than other alternatives.’ As it stands, Cosham Plant have six licensed drivers that work with the company.

rom self-driving cars to food delivery robots, developers have been promising autonomous robots and machinery to consumers ever more frequently over the past few years. The most prevalent area of self-drive and autonomous technology development is in vehicles. For the past few years, the world has been awash with rumours that the selfdriving cars that Sci-Fi enthusiasts have been dreaming of are coming to take over our roads. While the actuality of those dreams may still be firmly in the pipeline, with Elon Musk of Tesla promising a fully autonomous car in 2020; in other industries, such as construction and mining, the dream is reaching actuality. This year has already seen a flurry of activity with companies advertising and releasing new technology, including autonomous machines, that may shape the heavy machinery industry’s trajectory over the following decade. To truly understand how autonomous machinery may shape the Earthmoving Industries over the next decade, the following questions must be answered: What is autonomous Plant Machinery? Why is there a focus on developing this type of technology? What are the most recent examples of Autonomous machinery in the earthmoving industries? How might this effect the Plant Industry in the Future? Plant Planet aims to answer these questions and more, including thoughts from expert John Peers.

What is autonomous Plant machinery? Autonomous Plant Machinery has been on the cards for many years, coming to the forefront of conversation in the mid2010s. The main goal of Autonomous Machinery is to complete repetitive or dangerous tasks, sometimes both, on site. In this respect, autonomous machinery forms the link between robots used in factory production lines and the selfdriving cars promised by Elon Musk. The ideal autonomous machine would fall into four categories. Firstly, it would be able to work with little-to-no human intervention for long periods of time; undertaking tasks to aid construction work, such as excavation for groundworks. Secondly, autonomous machinery would be able to gain information from its

surroundings. Furthermore, it would move without human interference; the closest to which companies, not including NASA, have come is developing autonomous machines with a pre-programmed route from point A to B. Lastly, the ideal autonomous machine would be able to detect and avoid dangers in its immediate environment, such as objects and high wind speeds, adapting its course or behaviour to accommodate. These specifics, particularly the ability to detect dangers in the immediate environment, are the main reasons that it is more feasible for autonomous machinery, particularly autonomous vehicles, to be present in Earthmoving Industries. Due to the nature of their use, regulations facing the use of autonomous machines on the road are more rigorous than those for use of the machines on excavation and construction sites.

Why Are companies developing autonomous machines? The reasons behind development of autonomous machinery for the construction industry are numerous. For some, the reasons lie in the development of awareness of health and safety on construction sites. For others, the development of autonomous machinery is a result of natural economic growth and the natural trajectory of the Plant Machinery Industry. In many ways, these two reasons appear to be interchangeable. As the global population grows, Industrial Companies, particularly those in the Construction sector, are required to build and develop both residential and commercial infrastructure. The rise in demand for construction projects to take place, of course, results in a need for skilled workers. Further, some jobs in construction projects involve the undertaking of monotonous, sometimes dangerous, work. The development of autonomous machinery can provide those working in the construction industry with the means to assign these tasks to a machine. For example, tasks in groundworking can be completed by machines that are programmed to dig trenches automatically. Really, the reasons for developing autonomous machinery for use in Earthmoving Industries fall into three categories: safety, productivity, and efficiency.

Plant Planet • April 19 • 29

Feature • Is autonomy shaping an industry? Safety, as discussed previously, is a key factor for a multitude of reasons. While having fully autonomous vehicles, in the sense that they work without a human directly operating them, is the goal; even the steps towards autonomous machines that exist in 2019 in vehicles that require an operator can be crucial in protecting individuals from harm. By automating safety features in Plant Machinery, including positioning systems and touch-screen monitors allowing operators a 360° view of their machine and surroundings, Plant Machinery becomes safer for both the operator and other workers on site. However, safety alone is not a strong enough attraction for the development of autonomous machinery. As a health and safety specialist once told me, ‘people don’t think safety is sexy’. For this reason, autonomous solutions for productivity problems in Plant operation become prevalent in the development process. The

main argument for developing autonomous machinery in terms of productivity is the idea of decreasing the risk of human error. Machines developed in the 21st Century have the ability to measure down to the millimetre, and make decisions in a matter of seconds. Productivity becomes of extra importance when economic factors are taken into account. Industries involved in Heavy Equipment, particularly the Construction Industry, are facing a skills shortage. The number of skilled workers entering work in the UK Construction Industry has been in decline for the past five years. Faced with this decline, the introduction of autonomous technology and machinery in the Construction Industry has allowed companies to keep up with the demand for projects to be completed caused by economic growth. For example, the introduction of drones has allowed the work of three people to be completed by one operator in a fraction of the time.

While drones are not fully autonomous, requiring someone on the ground to operate the flying device, they offer a faster method of analysis. Where, previously, aerial photos of a construction site would have to be taken from a helicopter, transferred and processed by computers on site before being assessed; a drone is able to capture imagery, take measurements, and allow site managers to make decisions all in real time. The fact that one small machine can do the job of what would previously have been three or four workers, the argument of ‘the machines are here to take our jobs’ has arisen. However, given the skills shortage in the Construction Industry, autonomous machinery is, in some respects, a necessity - making up for the lack of skills as young people choose various other career paths. This is not to say that you would not find young people on a Construction site. In many respects, the development of autonomous machinery may give rise to a new age of

Is autonomy shaping an industry? • Feature required skills.

What are the most recent examples of autonomous machinery in construction? While it is likely that the Earthmoving Industries will see the use of autonomous machinery in everyday use before the majority of cities see driver-less cars on the road, fully autonomous machinery in common use is still a way off. Already in 2019, Machinery Developers have put out a range of new products featuring new autonomous technology. Volvo seemingly led the way in 2018, and have continued to do so in 2019. Already this year, the company have released a series of press releases and product announcements involving autonomous technology. According to Volvo CE’s Global Director of Connected Services, Tine Lefebvre, and VP of Customer Solutions, Koen Sips, the development of advanced technology available today means the level of operator assistance is set to transform the productivity of machines. The company recently released news that they have joined forces with Telia and Ericsson to launch Sweden’s first 5G network for Industrial use and will become one of the first companies in the world to use 5G to test remotecontrolled Plant Machinery. The use of remote controlled machines in conjunction with 5G technology will provide operators with increased efficiency,

lower running costs, and reduced risk in dangerous working environments. According to Volvo CE’s President Melker Jernberg: ‘[Autonomous machines] can give our customers more efficient production, logistics, greater flexibility and safer work. By minimizing the potential safety risks and downtime associated with sectors such as mining, we can get closer to our goal of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero unplanned stops. It will be exciting to see how far 5G can take us on that journey’ Another company making strides towards autonomous technology is machinery giant Honda. The company’s Autonomous Work Vehicle (HAWV), released in 2018, has been beta tested over the past year, with a newer version shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2019. The HAWV can be preprogrammed to undertake outdoor tasks and has already been tested in search and rescue, fire-fighting, construction, agriculture and landscaping applications. However, despite rigorous testing, the HAWV has some way to go before it is widely used in earthmoving applications. According to developers, the machine sometimes has issues when identifying objects as the sensors may detect objects that could easily be driven through, such as grass, as a solid wall that the HAWV must navigate around. Honda are currently developing the autonomous machine, hoping to identify the best sensors for use across all industry applications. Meanwhile, autonomous technology can be seen already in many applications

already existing in the Earthmoving Industries. Drones are used on construction sites to give workers an aerial view of the ground, and this month Amman will present a new telematics system for their complete range of compactors and pavers. The system will give companies complete control of machine data for their entire fleet from their phone.

What does autonomy mean for the industry? It’s important to note that as it stands, Earthmoving Industries have a long way to go before becoming ‘fully autonomous’ and in many cases, the goal is not for working sites to be fully autonomous but to be more efficient, productive and safer environments. Autonomy plays a key role in earthmoving applications, particularly in the operation of Plant machinery, and has done for years. The use of autonomous technology can aid operators in a range of everyday operations, from digging applications with an excavator to manoeuvring large quantities of materials across a working site. Further, as new technology arises, the amount of applications used for autonomous technology will increase. Perhaps 2019 will be the year that autonomous technology sees a boom; however earthmoving industries are far from being ‘taken over’. For our expert’s insights, read overleaf.

Industry insights Is autonomy shaping an industry? ‘I have had several conversations with Insurance Companies in recent months concerning what the attitude will be to autonomous machines and, not surprisingly, it would seem each insurer is keen to see what their competitors have to say on the subject. As with all types of insurance, a history of claims dictates the premiums that insurance companies will charge. Of course, when venturing into a new market, it will be necessary to over estimate the likely claims and this represents a headache to an Underwriter. A perfect example of this ‘blind science’ in recent times is the advent of Cyber Insurance which protects companies against a Cyber attack on their computer systems. Such claims in, say, the financial services sector could easily run into many millions of pounds; so, not surprisingly, even some of the major insurance companies are shying away from even offering this type of insurance. The Plant and Machinery insurance market is already relatively small, with perhaps only half a dozen serious players in the market. Autonomous vehicles are going to create two types of insurance risks: firstly, should they cause damage to themselves due to a malfunction; and, secondly, the damage they could do to third party property again due to a malfunction. So, we will face a period of chicken and egg, which will probably last a good three or four years, whereby the first insurers to offer the cover for both accidental damage and liability will see the results of their calculated premiums and whether or not these are sustainable. The manufacturers themselves will, of course, be very aware of the potential problem in obtaining competitive insurance premiums and therefore relationships between manufacturers and insurers may well mean that, at least when it comes to insuring the machine itself against accidental damage, insurance schemes will be offered subject to stringent regular service contracts with the manufacturer, for example.’

Relaunched and ready U

K and Ireland Plant Machinery Dealer J Mac have recently re-branded. The move comes with a host of new and exciting ventures for the ambitious company as they look to conquer the UK and Irish market as a top machinery dealer. Originally established J C Mac in 2018, the Warwickshire business have made a name for themselves as the sole dealer of Sunward Excavators in the UK and Ireland. Plant Planet’s Hannah Bounford caught up with cofounder Joshua McNally to find out about the company’s next moves in the Plant Industry. Following the re-branding, J Mac remain much the same as they were under their previous name, dealers of both their own machinery and Sunward Excavators, a recent addition to their product options. The company offer a range of options, from Backhoe Loaders to Excavators. The original range of Backhoe loaders, the flagship 888 having been exhibited at UK Construction Week 2018 and covered by Plant Planet, has seen a steady growth in popularity with J Mac’s customers. McNally comments that the standout of the J Mac Backhoe range in the UK seems to be the 885 Backhoe Loader. The 885 features a four cylinder stage IV Perkins engine, a operating weight of 8500kg, and a top speed of 40km/h. The loader and backhoe attachments are not insignificant either, with a max capacity of 1m3 for the loader attachment. The J Mac range of Backhoe Loaders and Wheel Loaders are a re-branded version of Turkish Brand Cukurova.

The introduction of Sunward Excavators, announced this year at the Executive Hire Show, has brought J Mac back to the Industry packing a punch. McNally explains that the companies approached each other at Intermat in Paris, following which J Mac secured a deal to be the UK’s sole trader of Sunward Excavators. Trading of Sunward Excavators by the company commenced in November 2018. When asked what it was that made Sunward stand out to J Mac, McNally explains ‘The Sunward brand really fitted us and what we stand for. We started up to fill a niche in the market, offering quality machines with quick delivery times and at competitive prices; and Sunward Excavators fit into that, we’re able to continue that promise while expanding our business and that’s really exciting.’ The Sunward 25UF (pictured opposite) is McNally’s stand out machine of the Sunward range offered by J Mac. With an operating weight of 2.5tonnes, a max digging depth of 2.84 meters, and zero tail swing, the excavator is the perfect choice for those looking for both power and mobility on the worksite. J Mac have established themselves within the UK and Irish Plant Industry. McNally comments, ‘We’re currently setting up a Dealer Network for both J Mac and Sunward Machines in the UK and Ireland, the network will ideally cover each county of the UK and we’re well on our way there.’

Executive hire show • event review

The Executive Hire Show, held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, is billed as an unmissable annual exhibition. The annual show brings manufactures, suppliers, dealers, and importers of Tools, Equipment, and Plant under one roof. As a trade-only event, the show provides an opportunity for businesses to meet and network. This year’s event, which took place over the 6th and 7th of February 2019, proved to be another success, with exhibitors bringing new Plant, equipment, and ideas to the table. From JCB’s 19C-1E mini excavator to Twaites range of dumpers, with such a wealth of new equipment on show, Plant Planet dives further into what exhibitors had to offer in 2019.

For many years, the Executive Hire Show has been at the forefront of the trade show calendar for both networking and debuting new machinery. This year the new machinery was out in force. JCB has lead the way for clean technology in 2019, launching their 19C-1E Mini Excavator (pictured above). The Excavator is the first of the E-TEC range by JCB, a new range of electric products that boast zero-emissions at point of use. With a battery pack lasting 4 continuous hours, and a charge time of only two hours with JCB’s optimal charger, the machine comes with a 3000 charge warranty, which JCB equate to 10 years of usage. The 1.9 tonne 19C-1E has a maximum dig depth of 2.819m and a maximum dump height of 2.818m. Designed to meet a need in the Construction Industry for environmentally friendly Equipment, the 19C-1E offers the full power of a non-

electric alternative while producing zero exhaust emissions. Other features of the machine include: • • • • • •

3-4 lithium-ion battery packs providing a 15-20kWH storage capacity Sophisticated battery management system ensuring full-shift availability Convenient on-board charger with 110V input for 12-hour charging The option for 230V charging, meaning an 8 hour charging time Fast charge option for 2 hour charging Load sensing hydraulic system

The lithium-ion battery promises operators a quieter experience with noise production reduced by 7dB. This reduction means the machine reaches only 86dB in external noise levels, further offering operators little to no restrictions on hours of operation, specifically in urban areas.

Plant Planet • April 19 • 47

Besides the 19C-1E, JCB also launched the CT260 Tandem Roller and 1T-2 Site Dumper. The CT260, featuring a maximum operating weight of 2.74t, has been designed to provide an easier and more comfortable experience for operators. The drum edge visibility, twosided step entry, and layout of the rear drum (lying flush with the rear chassis) make this roller a promising addition to the JCB range. Meanwhile, the 1T-2 Dumper is the safest machine in its class. Continuing the

It must be noted that, although JCB were certainly a highlight of the Executive Hire Show, their appearance was tinged with a sense of disappointment as it was confirmed that the company will be absent from Bauma in April this year. The decision comes as they focus on ‘more personalised, customer focused activities’, says a spokesman. Besides JCB, stand out environmentally friendly machinery from the show included Morris Site Machinery’s SMC TL 60. The Solar Trolley Lighting Tower is

entirely solar powered, eliminating noise and emissions. The Solar trolley weighs only 250kg and can fit on a standard 500kg tail lift. Allan Binstead of Morris Site Machinery said: ‘This is an incredible time to have joined the business with exciting new products adding to our world class line up. Customer reaction to our innovative and sustainable new models at the Show underpins that we are on the pulse of what the industry needs to support its environmental goals.’ In addition, Snorkel UK, the sole UK distributor of Ruthmann Blueluft tracked spider lifts, displayed their S3219E Electric Slab Scissor lift and an upgraded version of the Snorkel A38E Electric Articulated Boom Lift. With a max working height of 13.5m and a platform capacity of 215kg, the A38E is lightweight enough to be used on internal projects, while durable enough to stand the test of external work. The class leading scissor lift can travel up to 10 miles on a single charge. Divisional Managing Director for Snorkel UK, Andrew Fishburn noted ‘The Executive Hire Show remains one of the most important annual events on our calendar, and we look forward to showcasing our products and capabilities to our valued customers and contacts within the UK hire sector. I am also excited to bring our special financing

Innovation trail Live 2019 The 2019 Innovation Trail saw 10 companies given a 10-minute slot to present and explain products that the Innovation Trail Judges considered as particularly outstanding. The SMC TL60 from Morris Site Machinery was selected, with Allan Binstead speaking to podcaster and YouTube Channel Presenter Paul Hutton, about the machine. Binstead, noted how ‘solar really does deliver for the local community’ as well as being environmentally friendly. When asked about the importance of low noise emissions while working at night, he added, ‘everything we can do to reduce the noise coming from our sites is critical, but don’t forget the daytime operation. As society changes and more people work from home, we have mixed leisure and work spaces. The background noise level is critical’. Duro’s Du-Mital Diamond Blade, also nominated, is billed as the most safe, reliable, and cost effective tool for cutting metal with power tools on the market. The blade fits onto a conventional power tool and has been specially developed to cut the widest range of metals up to 40mm thick. The DHR400ZKU cordless SDS-Max rotary hammer from Makita, used for general maintenance and demolition jobs, features a LXT system cordless battery system universal across over 200 machines of the Makita range. The AutoStart Wireless System (AWS) is exclusive to Makita. The system allows the user to connect compatible dust extractors to the DHR400ZKU via Bluetooth, automatically turning the dust extractor on while the device switch is on. The fourth product featured on the 2019 Innovation Trail was the Sealey Group’s ElectroStart Jumpstarter, a lightweight product allowing users to jump start vehicles. Sealey Group’s ElectroStart technology means the product doesn’t have an internal battery and can be fully energised in a matter of minutes. The Hire Supply company exhibited their Master DC61 Battery Diesel Heater. Allowing companies to dry walls and paints, defrost machinery or pipe lines,

and heat working areas. The DC61 boasts significant energy saving, low noise levels, and a robust safety thermostat. The GM 340 Mobile Work Station for wall and ceiling sanders, enables a sander to be attached to the top of a trolley, with a dust extractor attached to the bottom. The mobile station takes the strain off the operator while sanding walls and ceiling, by touching the sander to the wall and moving the trolley back and forwards. The trolley reaches 3.5m, is dust free, and is quick to set up thanks to quick release knobs. Spokesman Stuart Colclough said ‘the GM 340 is a tool in itself’ adding that customers will get three tools in one, as the machine is compatible with multiple sanders and extractors. The JCB 19C-1E excavator, mentioned previously, was rewarded for innovation thanks to the excavator’s zero emissions. Sales manager Dane Tuach said, ‘We’re making company history by launching the first electric excavator from JCB,’ adding that the excavator is ‘a hero product’ for the business.

JCB’s 19c-1e excavator is the first to be operated within the exhibition space MHM’s mgtp10000 earned a spot on innovation trail live

Hilti’s DSH 600X petrol saw and water pump was also nominated. This, the company’s latest petrol saw, is also their most compact, bringing the opportunity to attach a pump to the tool to condense a two man job into one. Sam Joyson from Hilti said, ‘We know that sites are harsh places for tools, they get tested. We want to make sure, particularly for our hire partners, that they have the most robust tools that can keep bringing in revenue for them’ The MGTP10000 Solar Hybrid Gen from MHM Plant also earned a spot at the Innovation Trail Live 2019. MHM’s Managing Director noted ‘the concept is a self-powering hybrid generator’. The Generator combines a diesel engine with battery power and solar technology to reduce the run time of the diesel engine to create ‘a greener, more efficient provider of new energy’. The final company to receive a place at Innovation Trail Live 2019 were Four Ashes for the GeoRipper hand-held trencher. The GeoRipper is a portable hand-held trencher, used for trenching electrical, irrigation, fibre optic, landscape edging, dog fencing, and more. The dates for the 2020 Executive Hire Show are Wednesday 5th - Thursday 6th February. For more information visit www.executivehireshow.co.uk

Bauma 2019: What To expect Bauma International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles, and Construction Equipment, is the world’s largest trade fair in the Construction Industry. The trade fair, which is open to anyone, is held every three years at the Neue Messe München Exhibition Centre and is held across a week. Plant Planet’s Sam Krues takes a look at the 2019 event, shedding light on what’s to be expected.

Bauma allows visitors to experience the industry for construction machinery in its full dimension. It is a great opportunity to see the most important new developments from around the world. It’s also great for meeting international market leaders. This is where trade visitors find exactly the right solutions to meet their needs.

the Bauma never stands still and nor does the company. Over recent years, Messe München has built up global competence in the organization of international trade fairs for Construction Machinery. The successful concept behind Bauma has been transferred to a range of countries outside Germany— namely China, India and South Africa—in each case considering the needs of those regional markets.

Messe München has a long tradition when it comes to construction machinery fairs: Bauma first took place in 1954 and occupied 20,000 square meters. Since that time, Bauma has grown enormously. In 2016, it took up a record space of 605,000 square meters. Originally, Bauma was an annual show; nowadays, it takes place every three years. As one can see,

With two new exhibition halls and optimized outdoor areas Bauma Munich once again surpasses itself. In 2019, the world event will feature 18 halls and an overall exhibition space of 614,000m². For both exhibitors and visitors, this means more space for doing business.

Sustainability is one of the core topics this year

All images courtesy of Bauma Exhibitors

By its very nature, the construction industry has a very large ecological footprint. At Bauma, exhibitors are going to present innovations towards sustainability, resource conservation and environmental protection. Some of the solutions have also been nominated for the Bauma Innovation Award. The avoidance or reduction of emissions of all kinds remain a major playground for technical innovations and improvements in the construction industry. For example, cold milling of old road pavements produces significant amounts of particulate matter — a hazard to the health of construction site workers, residents and passer-by. “This makes it more pleasing that many of the innovations presented at this year’s Bauma have effect in terms of sustainability, resource conservation and environmental protection, “says Bauma Exhibition Director Mareile Kästner.

15 innovations head into the home stretch The 15 candidates for the Bauma Innovation Award 2019 have been selected. They were presented to the

general public at the Bauma Media Dialogue held on January 28 and 29 in Munich. The Bauma Innovation Award is being presented for the 12th time in the categories Machinery, Components/Digital Systems, Construction Work/Construction Method/Construction Process, Science/ Research, Design. Herrenkneht AG’s E-Power Pipe, LeibherrWerk Biberach’s 370 EC-B Fibre Crane, and the Large Milling Machine with MILL ASSIST by Wirtgen are all up for an award in the Machinery Category. In the Components/Digital Systems category, the Bomag Iron Dust Shield is up against Doka’s DokaXact positioning system, and Moba Mobile Automations’ PAVE-TM Layer Thickness Measurement system. Vying for an award in Construction Work/Construction Method/Construction Process are: the B-Project from Bauer Spezialtiefbau, Max Bögl’s Worldwide. The Mobile Fabrication, and Innovative Chalice Shaped Pillars from Ed. Züblin. TU Bergakademie Freiberg, TU München, and Karlsruher Institut für Technologie are all nominated in the Science/Research Category with the Conti-E-Impulse Comminution, Driver Guidance 4.0, and

Defined Removal of Highly Reinforced Concrete, respectively. Finally, the Design category sees the INTUSI Intuitives User Interface by Leibherr-Hydraulikbagger, the Mecalac TV1200 by Mecalac Construction Equipment UK, and the Design HDDSystem Drill by Tracto-Technik all nominated. The jury will evaluate the entries based on criteria that apply to the industry and its future. These criteria include questions like: How practical is a solution? Or how much economic potential does it have? The spread of digitalization played a key role, just as environmental protection, sustainability, resource efficiency and humanization of jobs did. The key criteria in the Design category are aesthetics and appearance or the link between form and function. All entries are pictured above. Bauma 2019 runs from 8th-14th April at Neue Messe Munchen. The trade fair is open for anyone to attend, with tickets starting from €24.
