RFID

Detection System ZoneSafe® uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to create detection zones around vehicles and mobile plant.

Vehicle-mounted antennas detect RFID tags which can be worn by workers, or placed on objects or property. When a ZoneSafe tag enters a detection zone, the vehicle operator receives a visual and audible alert. A vibrating tag also warns the detected worker of an approaching vehicle. ZoneSafe RFID technology does not require line-of-sight and tags will be detected regardless of obstructions, blind spots, adverse weather or poor visibility.

SURREY WASTE & RECYCLING COMPANY REFLECT ON 3 YEARS OF SCREENING Waste and Recycling company, D&E Roberts have been in possession of a REMU 4150 Screening Bucket since early 2019. We re-visited them 3 years on to see what benefits they were enjoying with the bucket. Established for over 30 years, D&E Roberts operate from their waste transfer & recycling centre in Leatherhead. They provide waste disposal services to a diverse customer base, including householders, builders, landscaping contractors and blue-chip companies. To meet their ongoing commitment to responsible recycling they continue to invest in ‘state of the art’ waste sorting and separating equipment to process all the waste. Dave Roberts, Company Owner says: “Using the best equipment for the job is key to achieve our commitment to responsible recycling. The Remu bucket certainly helps in this respect – it’s a versatile piece of kit.” The company has a wide variety of waste coming into their recycling centre. The bucket can be used for various applications, each helping to achieve a higher percentage of recycled materials. With the Construction and

Demolition waste it is used to screen soil from hardcore, so that it can go on to be crushed and reused. In this respect it is used in conjunction with a MB Crushing Bucket. When Garden and Landscaping waste comes onto site it is used to screen soil from bushes, shrubbery and grass leaving Green Waste to be more easily recycled. Even with General Rubbish they screen out the soil and sand out of it, to make it easier to sort wood, paper and plastics. Fines under 24mm are taken out which leaves less weight of remaining waste. The screened-out fines also have their uses.

surprising, positive, outcome of our time in lockdown, was the relationship we developed with the QR code. The code, pre-pandemic, was being seen rather stuffily by marketeers as something a little outdated… even though there was no credible alternative. So, the QR code, our new friend, was able to efficiently provide a logistical solution to reintroducing us to draught beer, tasty snacks and the joy of going out again. Skip forward and the QR code has once again become ubiquitous and the marketeer’s newfound friend. At Thwaites, the code is being used to help deliver a series of videos that explain how to get the best from your dumper, reduce risk and improve performance. Dumpers are inherently safe pieces of site machinery, but like

many things, they can become dangerous and potentially fatal if operated incorrectly or recklessly.

Always wearing a seatbelt, not remaining on the dumper when loading, keeping speed down and never driving with the skip up.

Thwaites are keen to support hirers who offer their 1-tonne Hi-Tip dumper. This machine is popular with weekend, nonaccount hirers, who may be infrequent users, or indeed a firsttime hirer.

The video gives top tips about how to get the best out of the machine when driving, loading and tipping. In addition to the everyday hazards that need to be recognised and understood.

The support is delivered by way of a short, informative video, made specifically to enable hirers to share at the point of handover. By highlighting the QR code, hire controllers and or drivers can facilitate access to the bespoke video, enhancing the handover experience and reducing the risk of damage, injury or worse. The footage covers a short pre-use walk around to check the machine is safe to use. There is very clear, unambiguous messaging around:

Thwaites are offering hire company’s free QR decals that can be retrospectively fitted to their 1-tonne machines, supporting hirers to reduce risk and improve their customer’s experience. An additional derived benefit from the risk reduction is, the likelihood that the machine will be damaged less thus reducing charges and or costly disputes. If you are a hirer and would like to request a number of decals, please send an email to uksales@ thwaitesdumpers.co.uk

Bobcat T7X All-Electric Track Loader Wins Award in Spain“To‑Lyon” - The T7X is the first all-electric compact track loader in the world The high performance and zero emissions of the Bobcat T7X, the first all-electric compact track loader in the world, have been recognised with a major award in the Earthworks, foundations and demolition category of the 2022 Potencia Awards in Spain. The quality of these awards lies not only in the level of the participants, but also in the independence and credentials of the jury that awards them. In this sixteenth edition of the Potencia Awards, the jury was presided over by SEOPAN and the National Confederation of Construction, whose members are responsible for the machinery fleets of the largest construction companies in the country. Carlos Campos, Doosan Bobcat District Manager for Iberia, collected the award. “We thank the Jury and the TPI group for this recognition. Sunbelt Rentals purchase a further five Faresin Electric Telehandlers

ONE

of the UK’s largest equipment rental providers, Sunbelt Rentals, has purchased a further five Faresin Electric Telehandlers from UK dealer GGR Group. This purchase comes following an initial investment in 2021, which saw several Electric Telehandlers branded as part of Sunbelt Rentals’ ESG initiative, ‘Our Planet’ which focusses on driving carbon emissions down and creating a greener future for all.

After an initial introduction to their customer base, testing the products in the field and listening to customer feedback, Sunbelt Rentals has responded to the growing demand for the

customer feedback has been very positive.

As part of the purchase, the company chose the Farmatics telematics system that allows users to remotely monitor operations, geolocation, consumption and productivity of the machines during use. Three 400v fast chargers were also bought, giving users the opportunity to charge the machines during periods of downtime, such as break times.

“Even with the ongoing supply chain challenges we’re all facing, we’ve found that the partnership between GGR Group and Faresin has made it easy for us to conduct business.

Andrew Winlow, Director – Asset Management, Sunbelt Rentals commented: “We have been impressed by what we have seen from the Faresin 6.26 Full Electric so far and

“Faresin continues to innovate at pace and is making products such as the electric telehandler readily available in the marketplace, with further development planned for later in the year. While GGR Group, the importer has made a commitment to stock and were seeing machines arrive monthly, all of this has been key to our partnership success

and is allowing us to respond to customer demand.” Mike Walkley, Project Sales Specialist, GGR Group said “It has been a pleasure to work with Sunbelt Rentals on this sale and listen to the brilliant feedback from their initial purchases last year. It has been great to help support their new green initiative “Our Planet” through supplying these eco-friendly alternatives and I very much look forward to working with them again in the future.” The Faresin Electric Telehandler is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, which unlike regular lead acid batteries can be opportunity charged without any damage or reduction to the battery life. A fast-charging system allows the batteries to be rapidly topped up at convenient intervals throughout the day, such as during breaks, if desired. A regular 110-volt on-board charger is included when larger power supplies are not available and can be used for an overnight charge. The standard 300Ah battery will last up to six hours of typical use with a rapid recharge time of 1.5 hours from zero with the external fast charger. The electric machine provides a range of benefits and notable savings, not only in emission levels, but also maintenance and running costs when compared to traditional internal combustion engine equipment.■

CSN, one of world’s biggest mining companies, chooses SANY Mining Equipment Since 2021, SANY Brazil has been investing in the mining market, through the presentation of the SANY off-road trucks SKT90S and the electrical SANY off-road trucks SKY90E. As a result of these investments, on May 22nd, SANY Brazil finalized the sale of 23 SANY SKT90S off-road trucks and three SANY SY750H excavators to CSN MINERAÇÃO – Mina Casa de Pedra, one of the largest mining companies in the world. CSN has one of the largest open-pit mining complexes in Brazil and is developing a new important project for the continuity and evolution of the mining market in Brazil. SANY was chosen by CSN because strong companies demand strong, resistant and reliable machines. The SANY SKT90S offroad truck, with all these characteristics and more, takes mining activity to a new level, filling a gap in the market and increasing productivity while reducing costs. Delivery of the 23 SANY off-road trucks was carried out at a highly successful event held at CSN’s headquarters in the municipality of Congonhas in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on May 19th, 2022, as shown in the photos below. Following the purchase and given the excellent performance of the equipment, another contract SANY and CSN closed another contract for the sale of an additional nine units of SANY SKT90S off-road trucks and six more units of SANY SY980H excavators to CSN CIMENTOS, whose delivery is scheduled to take place near the end of 2022. ■

equipment ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

An electrifying vision for the future In 2018, we first unveiled the revolutionary e12 concept – our first electric excavator and a clear representation of our ambitions to prioritise alternative fuels. While other manufacturers were dipping their toe in the water with micro excavators, we wanted to demonstrate the real-world potential of an electric powertrain. Suitable for a wide range of applications, including urban building sites and infrastructure projects, the 11-tonne e12 was the first medium-sized compact excavator to really embrace electrification. But while the e12 gave an insight into our vision and appreciation for alternative fuels, we were keen not to rush full production, with infrastructure at the time unable to keep up with engineering advances. Four years later, however, the world has transitioned far further

towards electrification. As such, at this year’s BAUMA exhibition (October 24–30, Trade Fair Centre Messe München), we’re set to present the sector’s first zeroemissions range of medium-sized compact equipment. Comprising our 11-tonne excavator (the e12), a 1,000-litre swing loader (the es1000) and a revolutionary six-tonne cabbed site dumper (the ed6), this new suite of models aims to change operator thinking. We’ve even created a solution to tackle the challenge of limited on-site power sources. M-Power – a 300kWh portable battery power supply – eliminates the requirement for traditional diesel generators and offers a low-carbon charging option for our latest electric equipment. This is not our finished line-up, it’s simply the beginning. However, it shows our intent for the future and aims to demonstrate the realworld viability of electric compact equipment. If you’re visiting this year’s BAUMA exhibition, head over to the Mecalac stand and see the latest models up close. of the challenges we face is attracting people to the construction plant sector. Apprenticeships are a vital part of industry and there are now over 900 apprentices across construction plant-based occupations. In July the Construction Planthire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future apprentice and trainee awards took place and these awards - now in their tenth year - illustrate the value of apprenticeships and training in the plant sector, putting the spotlight on future leaders of our industry. We received a total of 72 nominations for Stars of the

Commentary Nominations for the CPA Stars of the Future Awards 2023 can be made from early next year. Nomination forms will be available on the CPA website in January 2023 and nominations can be made either by employers directly, or training providers.

CPA At CPA, one of our roles is providing a project management and technical support service to employer-led Trailblazer groups to help get the apprenticeship through to fruition. It has been a long and arduous process but Trailblazers apprenticeships are now available for Lifting Technicians, Plant Operatives, Plant Mechanics and Hire Controllers. We’ve recently started work on developing an apprenticeship for Plant Maintenance Technicians at Level 3.

THIS WAS THE MOST COMPETITVE YEAR OF THE AWARDS YET! Over the past six years, apprenticeships have evolved significantly with Trailblazer ‘standards’ apprenticeships emerging in 2014 in England. Trailblazer apprenticeships firmly put employers in the ‘driving seat’ and are developed by employerled Trailblazer groups that conform to a given criteria.

32 • aUGUST 2022 • Plant Planet

Attracting the right recruits, including apprentices, to the sector remains a recurring issue but the construction plant industry offers careers

for life and more females and those from ethnic groups are joining the sector. It is also positive to see that official figures for plant-based apprenticeships are looking much stronger than originally anticipated. It’s pleasing to see how former Stars of the Future winners have progressed in their careers so far. For instance, Amy Wicks of L Lynch Plant Hire won the accolade of Hire Controller of the Year last year and this year she has been promoted to Senior Manager, which is just one level below the Board of Directors, all at the age of 25. Rest assured, the future of our industry is in safe hands.

Increased readiness for future legislation. Going green now could save you a significant amount further down the line, should the government or your industry enforce specific green provisions or regulations.

Increased morale and attracting new talent. Going green doesn’t only foster positive feelings from customers. Employees feel safer working for green businesses. Involving workers in company-wide green initiatives can boost the morale of your team. This is also a good way to reduce turnover, because employees don’t want to leave a place that makes them feel as if they are a part of a work community that cares. →

THE PLANT PLANET STAND BUSY AT HILLHEAD 2022

As a company first, the Plant Planet team were also there, getting in on the action and took the opportunity to exhibit at the 2022 show. Hillhead was a great experience for the Plant Planet team seeing an array of machinery up and back in action. We also teamed up with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and the MYHP - The Mental Health Podcast to promote the “Make It Visible” message. Mental Health Ambassador, Robert Muldoon, joined the Plant Planet team on the stand and even conducted a live podcastsfrom across the show speaking with many visitors about his own journey and how vitally important it is to ask for help if needed. 54 • aUGUST 2022 • Plant Planet

The lighthouse club & ford #makeitvisible van

The Lighthouse Club was formed in 1956. However, not many people had heard of them, so they needed to get the message to everyone on building sites and building companies that support is available for construction workers and immediate families. My fellow ambassador Andy Stevens and myself went on the road to promote the brick and roof tile manufacture Wienerberger UK. Andy had organised that trip, and he spoke with The Lighthouse Club about doing a similar tour with them. We did a pilot tour back in February 2022 with fellow bricklayer Matt Dunleavy. Ford UK had lent The Lighthouse Club three Ford Transit Custom vans to tour the UK to help promote the charity and raise awareness around mental health and wellbeing in the construction industry using the #makeitvisible tagline on the highly visible decorated vans.

MR PLANT HIRE

MR PLANT HIRe: Creating a vision for the future Plant Planet sit down with Steven King, Managing Director of Mr Plant Hire, to discuss all things Mr Plant Hire; from his new role in the business to their vision for the future.

IN THIS

issue of Plant Planet, we sat down with Steven King, Managing Director of Mr Plant Hire. Steven joined the business as the new Managing Director. The company felt that having undergone a change of leadership following the retirement of Martin Lawrence, the time was right to refresh its look in readiness for the ambitious growth plans ahead. Starting from the beginning, Steven took us through the history of the company and how it all started…

68 • JaUGUST 2022• Plant Planet

“Mr. Plant Hire has been going for just over 40 years. In fact, our 40th anniversary was last year. The business was started by David Elston and Martin Lawrence. The two of them ran it as a private business, which specialized, to start with, in small plant and tool hire, but found a bit of a niche serving the M & E - mechanical and electrical markets.

“THE CONSTRUCTION WORLD WANTS TO MODERNIZE AND THE CONSTRUCTiON MARKET NEEDS TO MODERNIZE”

We’d like to bring forward the MPH abbreviation so that it Steven went on to comment on becomes a bit more prevalent than From there they built the the reasons behind the refresh and the full Mr. Plant Hire name. business up to four locations over some ideas he has had behind it. the years. It’s been going for 40 year.” Steven has a vast amount of experience already within the industry and went on to tell us a little about his experience and what he hoped to bring to his new role in the business. “Previously, I worked with Elliot for three years in the modular building space as business development director and from then I joined GGR as sales and commercial director. I started my career with Sunbelt Rentals as a manager for 21 years, until I decided it was a good opportunity for a career change. I joined Mr. Plant Hire back in August last year. Martin embedded me into the business and helped me understand more about it, and he let me take it from there… From early on, my plan was to refresh the brand. It’s a great business. It is very solid and very well set up, but I felt that we needed a bit of a polish to bring it

Interview We had a lot of discussions with the management team and with the wider staff as well and eventually we all settled on the

Even some outside influences, such as family members, all came back to that same logo. Which out of the 15 or 20 logo's on the page to all agree on one image, made us confident that we made the right decision.”

I can see the development of a more professional aspect. We've had a new website done in line with the new branding, we’ve got the new identity on the vehicles and gradually we’ll refresh.

Steven rightly pointed out how For me, I like to avoid the term far the industry has come over the rebrand as it suggests to me that last few years and how now we we’re ashamed of something that must adapt to the many different we’ve been in the past and we’re

absolutely not! We’re very proud of our business and its history, but simply, times change and the business needs to change with them.” With the refresh in mind, Steven highlighted some of the core aims and values that he wants to remain at the heart of the brand. “We wanted to keep the name Mr Plant Hire, because at the end of the day, it’s the name that we’ve traded under for 40 years. We want to look a little bit more polished but at the same time, we are still a relatively compact local hire company in London. We want to keep that image as well as that view of our customers. Gradually, we are getting national coverage and actually quite a sizeable group. →

MR PLANT HIRE realised the scale and the quality of the business beneath.

The bigger goal the role for him was the fact that was around attracting the talent. he felt he could make such a big We have such a great team, and difference in the business. this was an opportunity in my first Managing Director role and When discussing growth and it was only when I looked a little expansion, Steven highlighted just deeper, I some ideas that he was hoping to look at expanding. “We’ve got some ambitious growth plans. into London, or get better coverage in North London, with maybe one or two other locations, and then I’d like to look more towards the home counties, maybe down on the south coast. Being a bit more specialist and having more growth around more locations would be the biggest thing. The flexibility of the business is fantastic. I’ve never worked in a business so nimble and so open to ideas. We’d like to grow our plant and our business a little bit more, to have a better presence and maybe move into some of the more specialist material handling and niche markets. We’re currently launching a safety division/safety element to the business. We’ve actually expanded our lifting quite massively. Although we don’t badge ourselves up as having a

lifting division, we have an access division, a plant division, and an M & E division, and within the M & E division is a very strong lifting business. In the future, we will perhaps turn that into a specialist badge of itself.” The last few years proved to be a busy and challenging period for many within the industry, with a variety of factors influencing the market. Steven reflected on how the business endured some of these influences and the current challenges of the market. “I joined just after COVID, but again, (David and Martin) brought the business through COVID and we are currently having our best ever year on the back of it. While obviously, nobody would ever want it to happen again, there were actually some positive effects of COVID in terms of, understanding the strength of our business and actually getting the team to pull together.

But for now, we’ve got the product, we’ve got the reputation. The solid foundation that Martin and David set up in the

“what we’ve got now is a strong culture in the business that’s fully supported”

Looking to the future, Steven took us through some of the new developments that Mr Plant Hire are looking at in their vision for the time ahead. “Obviously, the M&E sector is something that we are heavily focused on. I’d quite like us to look into the glazing and curtain walling, for service in terms of the lifting and the handling equipment. perhaps we will at some stage look to diversify out of some of the construction markets.

business has given us a really good reputation, and a strong view of our customers. I think what we’ve now got is a strong culture in the business that’s fully supported. It’s the best job I’ve ever had and a great place to work where we do everything we can to make it a great place to work, and that obviously reflects in the service and the way we treat our customers as well.”

While Brexit has not directly impacted us as a business, it has had an effect on the market that we serve in within London construction. But London construction is always so busy, it's a solid market to be in. The pressures of inflation really are the unseen challenge. Our cost of doing business is rising in line with inflation, but our rental prices aren’t. The biggest challenge is aligning prices with the current rising costs in our profession. Every year, it is far more expensive to buy. And it’s quite evident in a rental business because when you replace items at X amount of years, you can see

What Steps Could You Take to Improve Attachment Efficiency? Akvile Peckyte takes a look at what steps you could take to improve attachment efficiency in demolition? Demolition in the planning stages Let us begin by discussing attachments in terms of demolition. When considering the type of demolition work one wishes to undertake, the primary material being demolished should be at the top of the list of priorities. When it comes to dismantling structures, attachments such as grapples, crushers, and multi-quick processors are often top choices. Hydraulic hammers are one of the most commonly used tools in demolition, as they can be used to break up big pieces of concrete. Whether a structure is made of concrete and whether the concrete is reinforced will influence the tool chosen.

should they make the right choice? The size of the construction equipment attachment market is set to expand 1.3 times in terms of value from 2020 to 2030, according to industry research. The largest share of the market belongs to compact track loaders, with skid steers coming a close second; their versatile nature on site lends them to being able to use a variety of tools.

to more demolition work done quickly. Choosing the right size tool to correspond to the size of your excavator is of utmost importance. When considering sizing, operators should begin by looking at the length of the arm they are using, as this affects the weight that the excavator can bear.

Improving safety and efficiency by choosing the right attachment

Right now, manufacturers are continuously investing in the research and development of new ways in order to improve their reliability, efficiency, and strength of attachments.

Operators have more tools to choose from than ever, so how

However, a large attachment is not necessarily going to equate

Furthermore, excessive weight can create hazardous working conditions and unbalanced loads. Flow and pressure are also important when choosing the right tools. For instance, Volvo excavators run at 5200 psi, with the pressure sent to the tool ranging from 3000-3800 →

psi; bigger processors will inevitably use larger cylinders that produce more force to demolish the material. However, for excavators that are too small but use large tools, the processors will likely be able to run, but they will not be efficient. By choosing the optimal attachment

this year, Caterpillar will be rolling out a new attachment feature for skid-steers and compact track loaders. The smart creep feature is made for their D3 skid-steer and compact track loader models that operate Cat cold planer and wheel saw attachments. The all-new smart creep senses the load on the attachment, automatically adjusting the drive command in order to keep the attachment running at the most productive speed.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE ATTACHMENT TO CORRESPOND TO THE SIZE OF YOUR EXCAVATOR IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE and the machine that is using it, operators could also reduce fuel consumption, which is an evergrowing concern in the current climate.

Plant Planet • aUGUST 2022 • 76

A combination of attachment sensors and proprietary software optimally balances attachment load and machine speed for maximum productivity. By continually sensing the load on the attachment, be it cold planer or wheel saw, smart

creep increases machine speed when encountering less resistance and automatically slows the machine when encountering higher load. The operator can monitor hydraulic pressure on the in-cab display panel, all while the engine load remains constant. According to Caterpillar, the release of smart creep takes the guesswork out of setting the right creep speed for operating the attachment. Without the aid of this feature, setting creep speed too fast can lead to stalling the attachment, or result in productivity loss by being too slow. By using smart creep software, operators can efficiently determine the optimal machine speed for cutting conditions. Increasingly, we are seeing more smart ways in which attachments operate, aiding efficient operation and reducing human error. Perhaps the next biggest revolution in demolition attachments will be a digital one – only time will tell.

BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE Is the key to safety

For over a decade Safety Shield has been designing and manufacturing bespoke collision avoidance systems alongside leading construction, building and rail industry leaders to help reduce collisions associated with people and plant interface but we know technology alone cannot eliminate every red zone incursion. By utilising Safety Shield AI technology, autonomous breaking and the Safety Shield Vue online behavioural management system, we have seen reductions in red zone incursions as much as 75% within just a few weeks. As the site teams embrace the technology and management are given the tools to monitor behaviour, informed decisions can be made, meaning red zone incursions and risk of a collision are significantly reduced. It’s using the information produced (via Safety Shield Vue) after a series of alerts to manage, educate, train and improve the overall safety behaviour. Starting a journey to a new safety culture being adopted on site.

No technology will eliminate the need for continual vigilance, but Zonr reduces the risk of a serious incident and helps site operators manage their liability for the safety of site workers.” The system combines GPS tracking and ultra-wideband technology to locate workers and hazards and create a virtual barrier – or exclusion zone – around those hazards. →

The exclusion zone is created through signals sent between a control unit and sensors placed anywhere within a site. The control unit alerts the system operator to any incursion, and also lets workers themselves know when they have entered an unsafe zone through a sounded alarm on a wearable device. Exclusion zones can be reconfigured just by moving the sensors. All setup is completed through a mobile app, and incursion data is viewed via a web-based portal. QTS managing director Alan McLeish said: “Our live sites are dynamic, and no two scenarios are ever identical, which means that ensuring health and safety is an ongoing challenge. industry faces a tricky landscape to navigate. The ongoing threat of theft and vandalism remains very real, with the cost exceeding the 2020 figure of £800 million by the end of this year, as well as shouldering the financial burden of rising fuel and material costs. But with margins already so tight in construction, we are increasingly aware that telematics is one of the sector’s go-to routes to combat the risk theft poses. And there is another important change within the industry; the Connected and Autonomous Plant (CAP) - first of its kind scoring system. National Highways recently unveiled and demonstrated the new

Its use has been somewhat one-dimensional until recently successfully to combat high theft rates, aid recovery post theft and to increase visibility of machinery usage and tool location.

Today, asset tracking is not only a good idea, but business critical. It saves the cost of replacing lost tools and time for searching, additional travelling to depots or merchants, and project delays. With asset compatibility and asset location in mind, we created ABAX Smart Connect. This is a software solution that provides businesses with full control over a mixed OEM fleet, all while reducing risk and increasing efficiency – and importantly, being incredibly user friendly. ABAX Smart Connect complies with ISO 15143, connecting data across your ENTIRE fleet from assets both with and without OEM connectivity. This includes all types of plant and machinery, vehicles and tools, to give you instant access to a sustainable, consistent format that allows for easy analysis. All of this happens in one platform with one interface, one log in and one set of reports that pull together information that covers a range of information points. With all the data you need in one platform you can easily see fuel consumption, spotting potential cost-drainers like unnecessarily idling machinery. On average, ABAX tracking solutions save users 18.5 per cent on fuel costs alone. Staff punctuality can also be improved, saving you admin time and costs of overclaimed timesheets. Finally, plant and machinery

usage can be monitored too, so you can quickly identify issues and keep an eye on servicing and maintenance intervals.

This is where Smart Connect brings huge benefit to sites and companies managing multiple brands of plant and machinery. The in-built telematics technology can still be utilised, but Smart Connect can save time and reduce any risk of error by pulling all the vital data needed to have visibility over the entire fleet in one platform.

as margins remain tight in the current climate. If you’re looking for a solution that will save admin time, simplify plant and machinery tracking and help you realise the full potential telematics can bring – from cost-savings through to reduced fuel consumption, to better visibility of equipment to combat the risk of theft – then a solution like Smart Connect could be perfect for your business.

SHELLplant

Shellplant – 50 Years and Stronger than Ever As Shellplant celebrates its 50th anniversary of trading, Rachel Lambert talks to business partners John Fensome and Julian Payne to find out how the company has evolved over the last five decades.

2022

is a milestone year for Shellplant. The successful Northamptonshire based construction plant and equipment dealership celebrates 50 years of trading, proudly representing many leading brands within the industry.

The privately owned company operates out of Earls Barton, selling new and used equipment, as well as spare parts, all of which is supported by Shellplant’s factory-trained on-site and off-site service and maintenance team. And there’s more … Shellplant is also a long-established supplier of used equipment and spare parts, exporting to customers around the world. There’s a lot to talk about.

JOHN FENSOME AND JULIAN PAYNE, SHELLPLANT OWNERS & MANAGING PARTNERS The company has come a long way since 1972, however, its core values of ‘highest quality products and service, as well as customer care’ remain firmly etched in the Shellplant business. Not ones to put themselves in the media limelight, I am delighted that Shellplant’s owners and managing partners, John Fensome and Julian Payne,

have agreed to this interview for Plant Planet. There is a lot of friendly banter between the two partners, John being (I hope he doesn’t mind me saying) a little ‘more senior’ than Julian. Both have a dry sense of humour, and I’m laughing before we even start. John is a co-founder of Shellplant, having first registered the company in August 1972 together with another family stakeholder, who retired from the business in 2005. Shellplant originally started selling second-hand plant. That direction has naturally changed over the years. Shellplant today is solely focused on new and used equipment sales. →

As we talk, John is showing me some great photos dating back to Shellplant’s early days, including one very amusing image of the first company van with the ‘S’ missing out of USED PLANT. He laughs about the signwriter to this day! I am intrigued to know how John got into the world of plant, bearing in mind that Julian didn’t join the business until 1989. “My interest in the industry really evolved out of doing groundworks, initially having bought a couple of machines from Peter Jones of Star Plant in Banbury, who incidentally was related to Julian. Back to plant, the 80’s marked rapid growth. During this decade, Shellplant had signed dealership agreements with Consolidated Pneumatic, known as CP, a big name in compressors (John remembers their famous CP 9 breaker), as well as Stihl and Norton Clipper. The 80’s was also significant, with the young Julian Payne starting employment with Shellplant in 1989. “I started in the Parts Department and was underpaid at £10,000 a →year!” says Julian, laughing as he recalls trying to negotiate a higher starting salary with John. Julian had some experience of working in retail at the time. “Having enjoyed myself at college, my father said, ‘if you don’t get yourself a job by Monday, you’re working with me,’ so I hastily went out and got a job at TESCO. Oddly enough, I worked for the man who ultimately became CEO of TESCO. If I’d have known that I might have stayed as part of that team!” jokes Julian. The banter about whether Julian was in fact overpaid or underpaid continues. I can see the rapport between the two men, and it is crystal clear how well this partnership works. A double act, to be sure. There were, at this time, just a

FUEL THEFT SOLUTIONS: DIESEL DYE manufactured to ISO9000 quality standards and is completely harmless to engines. It is compatible with all diesel and biodiesel fuels and conforms to the B7 EN590 diesel specifications. DieselDye™ is the UK’s leading anti-theft fuel dye and we supply it worldwide to a huge range of sectors including haulage, governmental, telecoms, mining and the military who used DieselDye™ in Afghanistan. We offer unrivalled intelligence when it comes to fuel theft. Protecting your business starts with protecting your fuel. As prices sky-rocket, fuel thefts are soaring across the UK. Police forces and businesses are reporting increases of up to 80%. One of the sectors being hardest hit by this growing crime wave is the construction industry. It is facing a perfect storm of rising prices coupled to the additional cost of moving from red to white diesel - which has been estimated to be as high as £480 million a year. This has created an additional problem, in that red diesel was harder to steal and disguise whereas stolen white diesel cannot be detected in road vehicles. A single tank in a large piece of plant can hold as much as 1,000 litres so you can see how thefts can quickly run into thousands of pounds and why criminals are so tempted by the prospects. Fuel thefts from heavy plant and bowsers used on site before it has been fully secured have also resulted in expensive damage to equipment and can often cause delays while repairs and refuelling take place. Why blue is the new red and could put fuel thieves behind bars.

One simple and highly effective way of deterring fuel thieves is to make it harder to disguise. Our DieselDye™ is an incredibly cost-effective way to make your diesel less attractive to thieves and to deter contactors and people working on site from helping themselves. For less than a penny per 5 litres, it will dye your fuel a distinctive blue colour. It is easily added to tanks and bowsers and could save you tens of thousands of pounds in stolen diesel. We supply deterrent signage for you to warn potential thieves that the fuel has been specially marked and you can warn everyone working on site that you have the legal right to test vehicles suspected of using stolen diesel. DieselDye™ is

Safety Shield Global - Constructing A New Safety Culture

We know technology alone cannot eliminate every red zone incursion. But by utilising Safety Shield AI technology, autonomous breaking and the Safety Shield Vue online behavioural management system, we have seen reductions in red zone incursions as much as 75% within just a few weeks. As the site teams embrace the technology and management are given the tools to monitor behaviour, informed decisions can be made, meaning red zone incursions and risk of a collision are significantly reduced. It’s using the information produced (via Safety Shield Vue) after a series of alerts to manage, educate, train and improve the overall safety behaviour - Starting a journey to a new safety culture being adopted on site. The latest example of this is the introduction of our Safety Shield intelligent thumbs up system. Safety Shield have now digitalised this procedure by combining an external thumbs up display and audio acknowledgment from the operator to the approaching person. The intelligent system also has the option of plant disablement for safe entry into the red zone. Using the intelligent thumbs up system is the only way to ensure a safe approach towards a working machine, therefore safe entry becomes second nature to those working around plant on site. The widely used thumbs up procedure

was originally introduced to the industry by Llynch Plant Hire and Haulage. Llynch Plant have now adopted our intelligent system for their fleet and are working in partnership with us to launch this next evolution of the thumbs up system across the industry. and wear.

Typical applications are construction equipment, airport vehicles and fork lift trucks. The product is formulated from recognised fuel additive components and should not void an engine manufacturer’s warranty. In fact, many engine manufacturers now recommend the use of upgrade additives.

It would be easy to conclude that the requirement to enhance fuel by using fuel additives is no longer necessary.

Filter Blocking Tendency Tests (IP 387)

However, it is very important to remember that biodiesel is used in all diesel with many unintended consequences for engine performance and maintenance.

The unintended consequences of biodiesel in fuel on engine performance and maintenance have been experienced by many of our customers with images and samples submitted for testing.

Detailed Description

Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) is a parameter that is part of the EN590 fuel standard applied during the winter months. The maximum value is 2.54 (no units).

exocet® Off Road Diesel Supreme is an advanced fuel additive designed to benefit both mineral diesel and biodiesel blends. It prevents deposit formation throughout the fuel delivery system, especially in the injectors and fuel pump, to keep the system clean and running at optimum performance. It also compensates for some of the deleterious effects of a higher FAME content (e.g. tendency for water pickup) and will prevent the agglomeration of biodiesel precipitates that can be the cause of filter blocking which results in fuel starvation in the engine.

106 • aUGUST 2022 • Plant Planet

A fuel sample causing severe fuel filter blocking in the field was tested for FBT with and without exocet fuel additives. The results are in the table below.

Our results demonstrate that a well formulated fuel additive, containing dispersants, will prevent agglomeration of precipitated FAME (biodiesel) particulates, keeping them small and dispersed in the fuel and able to flow through the fuel filters, thus maintaining equipment operability. Importantly, FAST’s fuel additives also contain a deposit control additive to protect fuel injectors and keep them clean. Exocet Off Road Diesel Supreme additive will treat and prevent filter blocking problems caused by precipitated biodiesel (FAME) particulates. FAST recommends the use of a 10μm fuel filter on all bulk storage tanks.

Product Focus

Scalable Electrification of Plant Machinery Until recently, the construction industry was rather sceptical about the electrification of heavy construction machinery. After all, the power-hungry machines need a lot of energy to move large quantities of earth, or to lift and transport heavy materials. Taking the challenges machine operators and owners face when looking at reducing their CO2 emissions and transitioning to electrification, companies such as Webasto have worked tirelessly to develop technology and solutions to address the complexity of needs.

Battery systems One of the main prohibitive factors to transition large machinery over to battery power is the expense. And, while the large OEMs can absorb the costs, many construction machinery and commercial vehicle manufacturers shy away. This is where Webasto comes in! The company has spent years using its expertise and technical know-how to develop the technology needed to provide high quality modular battery solutions, so they can be used in a wide variety of vehicle and machinery applications. The packs comprise 16 modules each, which are in a robust housing and include a dedicated cooling interface. “We have developed the pack so that it minimises the prohibitive cost factor,” explains David Stafford Commercial Manager, Webasto Group UK. “This allows our customers to customise their applications with a standard product.”

108 • aUGUST 2022 • Plant Planet

Another key consideration when electrifying machinery is the ability to keep the machinery working consistently and in all temperatures. The modular battery packs developed by Webasto are interchangeable therefore can be swapped over with fully charged packs when required and on site. Charging of the boxes can be done off site, meaning there is no need to remove the entire machine from site. However, the main benefit of a Webasto CV Battery System is the Thermal Management System and Vehicle Interface Box (VIB). The primary VIB controls secondary BMS units in each battery module, therefore balancing the current flow from each one. As well as enabling communication between individual hardware components and corresponding software, the VIB also serves as the interface between the batteries and the vehicle, combining the functions of a power distributor,

BMS and fuse box in a single enclosure. In addition, the modules use aluminium cooling plates on the bottom of each of two layers of packs inside the modules. This avoids having to use liquid cooling within the pack so there is no risk of coolant leaking.

APPLICATION Webasto also supports customers through all phases of the project – from conception and development to implementation and beyond with various services: “Many of our customers are smaller and are just feeling their way into electrification. We advise our customers on all aspects and do not only deliver finished product,“ says David. This approach has many advantages for Webasto’s customers: The technology is scalable; the products are of the highest quality and the total cost of ownership and time-to-market are dramatically reduced. With Webasto you are guaranteed a battery system that will ensure your machinery works harder for longer.
