One Year On

May 2019 marks a year since the launch of Construction Plant Finance Ltd, an independent finance company introduced exclusively for the UK construction plant and equipment sector. Fast forward 12 months and the company is certainly making a positive impression on the industry. Construction Plant Finance offers a comprehensive range of competitive and flexible end-to-end finance solutions to support manufacturers, importers, dealers and end-users in the UK construction industry. Prior to the launch of Construction Plant Finance in 2018, it had been some 20 years since there had been an independent finance company dedicated solely to the construction plant and equipment sector; significantly one that was not owned by a bank or associated with a manufacturer. Understandably, the launch of such a company to fill this niche gap has come as welcome news to the industry. It is opening up new and

alternative channels of funding to customers through a variety of finance options to make the purchase of equipment more affordable and cost-effective, creating opportunities for businesses to grow incrementally, even in the most competitive trading environments. The name ‘Construction Plant Finance’ may be new but the company is certainly in very safe, knowledgeable hands with Steve and Jackie Moody at the helm of the business. Both need little introduction and have decades of experience in the provision of asset finance solutions, and the construction industry in general. “It has been a busy and very positive first 12 months for Construction Plant Finance,” explains Steve Moody. “With the economic uncertainty of Brexit and with banks showing signs of ‘nervousness’ towards lending to the industry, we as an independent finance business, can support eligible companies with new and additional funding facilities, which may not previously have been available. The options we offer and

our understanding of the industry, combined with the personal approach and specialist knowledge of our team, provides an extra dimension of support to our customers which sets us apart from banks and other finance providers.” As an example, Vendor Sales-Aid Finance provides a viable commercial proposition for manufacturers and dealers, providing a suite of finance partnership support that includes full ‘customised’ branding, stocking plans and subsidised finance schemes. In less than a year, Construction Plant Finance is already working with numerous dealers as well as some importers and manufacturers of construction equipment who have never had a finance partner before. It’s not that easy being green The 5th June marks the 45th annual World Environment Day. An international awareness day dedicated to encouraging worldwide awareness and action towards protecting our environment. Since its inception in 1974, the event has become a global platform celebrated in over 100 countries. This issue, the Plant Planet team have donned a new logo and shown their support for the event, with a magazine focussed on pressing issues facing our Industry and Environment. 2019’s World Environment Day focus is Air Pollution. A subject that is of monumental importance in the Plant Machinery Industry. Two of our main features this month focus on the dangers of pollution caused by concrete use (The Dangers of Dust Pollution - p.36) and the rise of ‘green technology’ in the Plant Machinery Industry (The Rise of The Green Machine - p.40). A key theme of World Environment Day is encouraging others to get involved. Our feature Five Small Changes to Be More Eco Friendly is dedicated to encouraging businesses to take a more environmentally friendly approach to business on a day to day basis. Besides World Environment Day, this Issue we are looking forward to Plantworx 2019, with a complete show preview on page 58. Burn, Plastic, Burn JCB CELEBRATES DOUBLE WHEELED LOADING SHOVEL MILESTONE Welsh farmers may resort to burning or burying plastic waste as collection company closes its doors for a year.

Until May 2019, Birch Farm Plastics was the only firm solely dedicated to collecting agricultural plastic waste in Wales. The company, which has been in operation for over 25 years, collected approximately 10,000 tonnes of bale wrap, silage bags, and other plastic from farms around the country per year, before selling the waste onto a recycling plant. The close has come after the recycling plant used by Birch Farm Plastics allegedly started charging fees instead of paying for farm plastics. Now, with the closure of the company, there has been talk of farmers burning or burying waste plastics as a result of the rising costs. As it stands, farms can store waste plastic for up to 12 months before disposing of it correctly. However, as Welsh farmers share concerns about a lack of infrastructure relating to recycling farm plastics, concerns have been raised regarding the improper disposal of waste plastics. The Welsh Government responded to these concerns, stating: ‘The disposal of farm plastic is a commercial matter between the farmers, the collectors of the plastic film waste, and the plants that can and do recycle it’ adding, ‘Farmers have a responsibility to ensure their plastic is disposed of correctly’ This response comes a year after Environment Minister, Hannah Blythyn, spoke of the importance of getting infrastructure in place.

JCB is celebrating 50 years of wheeled loading shovel manufacture – with production hitting record highs. Over those five decades, the company’s award-winning loader range has expanded beyond recognition, introducing many market-leading technologies and establishing JCB as a global leader in the loader business. The company entered the wheeled loader market with the acquisition UK-based Chaseside Engineering, taking on its seven rigid axle machines. Relocation of production lines from Chaseside’s plant in Blackburn, Lancashire took several months and it was all systems go by the start of 1969, which marked the start of the first full year of shovel manufacturing at JCB’s expanding Rocester factory in Staffordshire. In that first year, the fledgling wheeled loader division would build just 298 machines, catering primarily for domestic customer demand. As the 50th anniversary is marked, JCB now produces wheeled loaders in their thousands on production lines around the world, including the UK, India, Brazil and China. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of JCB opening a multi-million pound factory in Cheadle, Staffordshire dedicated to the production of wheeled loaders. Tim Bunthorpe, JCB Cheif Innovation and Growth Officer said: ‘Over the past 50 years, JCB’s wheeled loader range has evolved into a major part of our product portfolio. Fifty years is a long time but our sights are firmly on the future and we are committed to bringing new levels of innovation to this range. The launch of the spacious CommandPlus cab on our wheeled loaders was a pivotal moment in this machine’s history and this innovation really did put operator comfort at the heart of the design,’ continuing, ‘JCB now offers 25 different wheeled loader models and manufactures the product on three continents. With our innovative range we are very well placed to increase our sales in a sector which has grown rapidly around the world for three consecutive years.’

Launch of solutions devoted to construction for emerging markets Manitou group, world leader in roughterrain handling, launches two new telehandlers and two compact loaders for Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Presented at an event in Thailand before dealers and international journalists, these solutions are a response adapted to the needs of these specific markets, with a total cost of ownership suitable for their users. Due to profound changes in many metropolitan areas, there are numerous transportation infrastructure projects (highways, subways, etc.), along with residential and commercial construction. They contribute to the construction industry’s current economic health throughout the world. To help with these large-scale works, the Manitou group has broadened its offering with two telehandlers and two compact loaders, to help users increase their productivity. Intelligent, robust solutions optimize the works’ profitability, and the users’ total cost of ownership continuously decreases. These models’ versatility is also a response to the needs of projects in emerging countries, where equipment is sometimes limited. The Manitou MXT 840 and Gehl TX 408 models effectively respond to user needs. They can perform a vast array of jobs, thanks to a very wide range of attachments made for construction, such as forks, buckets, winches and gondolas. Their compatibility with all Gehl and Manitou attachments make their application possibilities all the greater. These telehandlers also allow operators to work very safely at the site. Kévin Arnou, product manager at Manitou group remarks: “Our ambition is to develop the telehandler market through models that are easy to use, robust and that have a total ownership cost suitable to the local users. The 6 m to 10 m telehandler segment in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific represents a significant part of the telehandler market. It therefore provides a lot of growth leverage for the group. Our choice is also justified by the telehandler equipment needs that are growing significantly in the short and long term due to progressive modernization projects in those regions.”

Nasco Load Indicators makes Plantworx debut with ‘One Stop Shop’ Demo Machine Essex based Nasco Load Indicators is the brainchild of Managing Director Neil Smith who has over 30 years of experience in the business. The company which has developed a ‘one stop shop’ approach has been supplying plant safety and productivity systems for the past 20-years and in recent times have added several different products and services to its portfolio. One of their latest product additions of which they are the UK distributors for, is the French manufactured iDig 2D machine guidance systems. The iDig 2D is a very competitively priced system available for excavators from 1 tonne upwards and with a price tag of just £7k supplied and fitted offers a considerable saving on other more well-known brands. This new system will be demonstrated on the company’s stand at Plantworx (11-13 June 2019, East of England Arena, Peterborough) fitted to a Sany SY26U demonstration machine on stands NB12A and NB12B. These units have a number of unique features, for starters they take less than two hours to install and calibrate first time around, they are also transferrable between machines in just five-minutes, by simply unplugging from a 12v power source and feature a 100 machine and bucket memory. They are also completely wireless, featuring sensors that are solar powered. Most recently iDig have also added dozer blade guidance, ideal for grading off larger areas with the blade. The wireless solar powered sensors are

fitted to the boom, dipper and tipping link and on this example on the tiltrotator itself thanks to a bespoke made bracket which allows the sensors to be set at 45o angles to each other.

area, once you exceed that area the machine will stop working. One of the nice things about this set up is that the screen is relatively small and very unobtrusive”.

The sensors will last up to 100 hours without a charge, but during hours of daylight they are charging all the time anyway. The touch screen pad in the cab is extremely intuitive to use and certain to appeal to today’s play station generation of operators coming through.

Neil Smith added, “Since adding them to our range nearly all of our existing customers have embraced the GKD products and we have welcomed new customers due to the reliability and ease of use that GKD systems bring”.

In addition, in the cab you get a traffic light style system which gives you a visual indication of being on or off grade (too high or too low) by means of green and red LED’s. The system even knows if your machine has a standard mono boom, TAB boom or tiltrotator as it counts the number of sensors present on each machine it is used on! At Plantworx, Nasco will also be demonstrating GKD Technologies 2RCi height and slew restrictor on the Sany machine. GKD will also be exhibiting on stand N5. Nasco Load Indicators Sales Engineer Glenn Wise said, “This GKD entry level system is very simple to use and gives the operator not only a visual warning, but also an audible warning too that provides feedback that the machine is working safely. Once you have set your parameters into the system, it will only allow you to work within that pre-determined working

An example of which can be seen at Plantworx, fitted on the Sany demo machine in the form of an Engcon EC204. Engcon will also be exhibiting at Plantworx on stands H20 and H21. The Sany SY26U zero tailswing mini excavator itself has been supplied thanks to an agreement with the UK importers of Sany construction equipment TDL Equipment. TDL will also be exhibiting on stands H28 & H29. Tipping the scales at 2,755kgs the Sany SY26U takes its power from the popular eco-friendly Tier 4 final 3-cylinder Yanmar 3TNV80F diesel engine which offers a power output rating of 14.6kw @2,400 rpm. Volvo’s Electric excavator helps build at Chelsea Flower Show T

he construction of the Morgan Stanley Garden – one of this year’s main show gardens at the global consumer showcase – will be the first major project for Volvo’s new electric ECR25. Highlighting the machine’s unique capabilities for inner city environments and in keeping with the garden’s aims to explore how beautiful gardens can be created with a lighter environmental footprint, the zero emissions compact excavator will begin breaking ground on the foundations for the garden today (April 29). It marks its very first job since it was unveiled to a global audience earlier this month. Designed and created by garden designer Chris Beardshaw, The Morgan Stanley Garden considers how resources can be managed more sensitively throughout the creation of the show garden. Chris and his team have sourced a range of environmental materials and building methods to create this year’s garden – the start of which will be the electric ECR25. Chris says: “We are incredibly proud to debut Volvo’s electric excavator during the creation of this year’s garden. RHS Chelsea Flower Show offers the perfect arena to showcase the machine because it is such an intense work zone right in the heart of London so reducing exhaust emissions and lowering the noise levels is an absolute game changer.”

The machine will be working hard over the next week and a half where it will be excavating the site and trenching for tree pits and a central water feature. Once the job is complete it will then be moving on to its next big project where it will be used in one of the first customer pilots for Volvo CE’s electric compact product range. Because the machine is electric, no particulate matter, nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide is released into the environment. In addition to zero exhaust emissions, it also delivers significantly lower noise levels, reduced energy costs, improved efficiency and less maintenance requirements, compared to its more conventional diesel counterparts. Capable of operating for eight hours of work at a time, it will be charged overnight using the show’s electricity grid. Ahcène Nedjimi, Electromobility Specialist at Volvo CE, says: “What greater way to showcase the true

potential for electric machine technology than on this global platform. Volvo CE has always been committed to delivering zero emissions in the construction industry and now we are fulfilling this promise with a machine that represents a brighter future not only for our industry, but for society as a whole. This exciting project is the best possible demonstration of how we are driving forward sustainable innovations with our partners across any and every task, big and small.” There are more than 157,000 visitors set to attend the five day-long RHS Chelsea Flower Show when it opens to the public on Tuesday, May 21 – all of whom are there to see cuttingedge garden design and the latest horticultural trends. Designer Chris Beardshaw has a strong reputation at the event, having received seven Gold Medals and four BBC People’s Choice Awards and last year was awarded Best in Show for The Morgan Stanley Garden for the NSPCC (UK children’s charity). And this year’s garden in the heart of London is a fitting setting for Volvo’s cleaner, quieter and more efficient machine.

CATERPILLAR TO SUPPORT RIO TINTO IN CREATING TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED MINE Rio Tinto recently signed an agreement with Caterpillar to supply and support mining machines, automation and enterprise technology systems for the new Koodaideri iron ore mine in Western Australia. Under the agreement, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar will work together in creating an automated mine operation that makes best use of data analytics and integration to enhance safety, optimize production, boost mining machine utilization and lower costs. Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said, “We’re pleased to be partnering with Caterpillar and WesTrac, the regional Cat® dealer, to help make Koodaideri the most technology-enabled and innovative mine in our Pilbara iron ore network.

HS2 Ground Investigations and Environmental Impact Reduction Measures in Warwickshire P

reliminary work continues for building HS2 – The High Speed railway for Britain. This month we focus on ‘Ground Investigation’. Preparation for the earthmoving element of this project has been exhaustive and the largest of its kind ever undertaken in the UK according to HS2. Extensive ground investigations are currently being conducted to ‘de-risk’ the HS2 main works programme. The photos show exploratory surveys being carried out in Warwickshire to identify utilities located in the ground, a project which involved some temporary road closures in the area. The surveys were a precautionary measure ahead of an underground power line due to be laid from an electricity substation near the village of Harbury to the North Tunnel entrance near Bascote,

a distance of approximately five miles. This electricity supply is required to power a tunnel boring machine that will be used to construct the tunnels under woodland in Bascote, Long Itchington. Such investigations typically start with the asphalt road surface being saw cut, then broken up with a backhoe mounted hydraulic breaker. The inspection area is then vacuum excavated. Vacuum excavation is proving more and more popular in the Utilities sector. The risk of damaging existing utilities is greatly reduced, extremely important with the advent of very expensive fibre optic cables which carry large penalties if severed by contractors. Alongside improving rail links and boosting the economy, HS2 is fully aware that is has to manage its impact on the existing natural environment.

More than 650 hectares of new woodland will be planted between London and Birmingham which equates to around seven million trees. Some of these have already been planted as the photos taken in Warwickshire illustrate. The new planting will be a mix of native species tailored to each location with a particular commitment to reintroducing species currently in decline such as the Midlands Hawthorn and Black Poplar; the latter widely considered to be the UK’s most endangered native tree. The trees are all being supplied via a contract with Crowders Nurseries of Horncastle who also provided all the trees for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Written by David Chuck, Kingston PR

A Reciprocal Relationship • Feature Over the past few years, terms such as ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ have become buzzwords in society’s consciousness. Many articles discussing the pressures of climate change on various industries have been published both online and in the mainstream press. The Agricultural Industry is one such industry feeling the pressures of climate change and global warming and much has been published on the way in which the agricultural industry will have to adapt in response to rising global temperatures. However, the relationship between climate change and agricultural practices is much more than a case of cause and effect. This article will shed light on the reciprocal relationship between agricultural practices and climate change; showing how poor agricultural practices can have a major knock on effect, and how companies have made steps to combat climate change head on.

Periods of heavier rain may also damage the soil used to plant crops, pushing the industry towards the use of nitrogen rich fertilisers. While fertilisers can help the growth of crops, their use in agriculture can be hazardous to local environments. When fertilizer is used, some is taken into crops, while some is taken into water, and some is converted into gas by microorganisms, such as earthworms. This is the intended process, and can be useful for increasing farmers’ yields. However, when fertilisers rich in nitrogen are overused due to a lack of minerals in the soil, the excess nitrogen is mineralised as nitrates which will then leach into watercourses, polluting and potentially damaging aquatic habitats.

In 2018, the United Nations published findings that the world’s average temperature is climbing by about 1o Celsius per year. This climate change will have a major knock on effect on the world’s agricultural industry. As temperatures increase, the world’s farms will find themselves having to adjust the crops they are growing, owing to the fact that specific climates will no longer be able to support certain crops. Here, the industry will see a series of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ as some areas will see improvements in their climate for the production of crops, while others, specifically those in the southern hemisphere, will see crops yields suffer.

Agricultural practices have long had an impact on the state of the environment. While the Construction Industry is considered a bigger cause of global warming, Agriculture is not guilt free. The industry is the most common cause of deforestation and changes in land use, driving emissions and complications through the loss of trees converting Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into clean air. Further, the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) found in 2013 that 25% of human greenhouse gas emissions were produced within the Agricultural Industry. While these emissions don’t relate solely to the act of farming land, this area is one that can be focussed on to improve agricultural practices to benefit local and global environments.

Here is the caveat, poor weather conditions often lead to poor agricultural practices. In turn, poor agricultural practices are a factor affecting climate change. This cause and effect creates a reciprocal relationship between the industry and the environment, as each suffers or benefits as the result of another.

Feature • a reciprocal relationship and skid steers in addition to the transportation of the produce. This area of agricultural practice has been steadily improving over the last couple of decades thanks to the development of alternative machinery and power solutions to be used on site.

2019 has already seen a number of high profile companies put forward solutions to cut emissions on the farm. In February, New Holland displayed their T6 MethanePowered Concept Tractor at SIMA (pictured overleaf). The machine is the culmination of 13 years of development through the Clean Energy Leader strategy. The tractor boasts a 6 cylinder engine delivering the same power (180 hp) and torque (740 Nm) as its standard diesel equivalent, but cuts polluting emissions by 80%. Further, the tractor boasts a zero CO2 impact when fuelled with Bio-Methane generated from renewable sources, such as crop residues and animal slurry.

The key way in which companies are working towards a more sustainable industry is to work towards cutting emissions. This goal can be achieved by both small and large farms in a number of ways.

At a similar time, John Deere announced the release of a cabled electric tractor (pictured below). The autonomous machine, developed as part of the GridCon research project, exemplifies the

company’s efforts to provide farms with the ability to use their own energy. Known as the GridCON, the tractor utilises a cable connection from the field border to the machine, which transfers power at over 300kW. A drum fixed to the tractor can carry over 1000m of cable which is fed out and reeled in while guided by a robot arm to keep operation friction free at a low load. In addition, the GridCON is fitted with an intelligent guidance system to prevent the tractor running into or on the cable. Cabless, the GridCON is operated by preprogramming a set of rows or manually by remote control at speeds of just over 12mph. These tractor solutions will go some way towards cutting the emissions produced by the Agricultural Industry on farms. Other methods of improving agricultural practices with reducing climate change in mind include the use of self-generated electricity, through the use of technology such solar panels; keeping soil healthy, through the use of mulch and minimising use of pesticides; and limiting water waste by using alternative watering solutions.

lantforce Rentals is aiming to change the way we use plant hire services in the UK. We caught up with company operations director Sam Mercer about this digital revolution. Plantforce Rentals is a well-established leading plant hire company based in Weston-Super-Mare with, now, 4 strategically situated depots covering the Midlands and South Wales. The company is currently getting to grips with the ever-changing world of the digital Plant and Machinery Market. The company are already blazing trails with innovative projects like the early adoption of hybrid Kobleco excavators with lithium-ion/diesel power, highways specification wheeled excavators with trailers, Engcon tilt rotators, GPS machine control and Prolec height and slew restriction. These machines are now out on site offering customers massive savings at tier one projects like Hinkley Point C and HS2. There are plans to

increase the specialist fleet to over 20 machines in the coming months, adding to the already impressive stock numbers totalling over 1,200 machines all under a couple of years old and bursting with technology and safety features. And it does not stop there. As many Plant Hire companies and operators well know, in this industry you need to keep up with the times, stay ahead of the competition and, more importantly, the customer’s ever-changing machine hire requirements. What was once just a machine on hire is now a complete hire package complete with highly trained operators and technology ranging from specialist attachments, 360 degree view cameras, telematics and height and slew restrictors, to hi vis boxing rings as well as a host of safety features and other fancy items.

The Industry Construction is going through some very dramatic changes that affect the whole industry including the major projects that are currently running and due to start like Hinkley Point C, HS2 and Thames Tideway. These projects are massive to say the least, costing billions of pounds and helping the UK’s infrastructure grow.

WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT THE INDUSTRY IS GOING DIGITAL, TO STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME WE ALL NEED TO DO THE SAME. Technology is the key to realising these massive projects. With the move into the BIM (Building Information Modelling) world, most major projects are becoming digitalised from design to build. One of the key ways this digitalisation is affecting the workplace is through the adoption of GPS fitted machines as the norm. In most basic cases, Excavators are in indication mode and most Dozers are in semi-automatic mode; but some users are taking things a step further into full automation. This can provide a big cost reduction while speeding up the construction process. Further, the accuracy of these ‘digitalised’ operators is now second to none. With a touch of a toggle button, the machine becomes semi automated with the boom and bucket being controlled by the Earthworks system often had contractors requiring machines delivered to site fitted with specific GPS systems. This might sound simple but it can be a very demanding task involving hiring in additional equipment from other specialists and retrofitting it to the machine.

“The Trimble partnership pushes us to the forefront of proactive plant hire,” adds Sam. “We are now able to offer customers a complete machine control package depending on their needs. Machine control advancements within the industry now require a different approach. We have the machinery which comes with effectively two systems fitted. The first is the standard machine control indication

only, a bit like a Sat-Nav, really. It tells the operators how deep and exactly where to dig. Then, with a touch of a toggle button, the machine becomes semi automated with the boom and bucket being controlled by the Earthworks system. This technology is really for experienced operators who are working to very fine tolerances of grading. They can also now be even more efficient. We are not saying operators struggle with final trim but by its very nature it can be a very lengthy process of grading down in layers to within 10mm accuracy. In automatic mode this process is twice as fast for the operator. A good operator can cover twice the amount of ground in the same time, making the machine and operator more efficient. Combine this with the fact that all our machines are less than two years old and are within the current legislation for fuel economy, it is probably one of the most efficient packages a Plant Hire company can offer its customers.” Plantforce is also working on a simulation based training programme to train and profile all its full time operators to become efficient in all aspects of the new technology and multi brand machine control. “We see the future being a world with machine control and we need to be at the leading edge of this change in the industry,” concludes Sam. We know it seems a bit odd for a magazine to be preaching that people cut back on paper use, but stick with us, this is worth hearing. Although only 9% of ancient trees are felled to produce paper products, around 35% of all trees worldwide are cut down to make paper. Every company uses paper documents in some form or another; be it invoices, meeting notes, or printing company emails, we all use paper in the workplace. High levels of paper consumption and waste can contribute to air and water pollution, and the rise of greenhouse gas emissions. Companies can cut back on paper use by ensuring that only essential documents are printed. Using recycled paper places less demand on trees to be planted; further, recycling causes 35% less water

The trees are felled in a 6-10 year cycle, and for each tree that is felled, three are planted in its place; in addition, the trees planted are beneficial to the environment as they help control the amount of CO2 in the area in which they are planted. The use of sustainable materials by companies in the Construction Industry has been at the forefront of the conversation about building a sustainable construction industry for many years. For many, the definition of sustainable materials is elusive or hard to pinpoint. The ideal sustainable material would not require nonrenewable sources to be created, and would not have any adverse impact on the environment when used. In reality, these criteria make finding a truly

sustainable material practically impossible. However, companies looking to use sustainable materials can use these criteria as an aim for which to strive. A simple way of sourcing sustainable materials is to use reclaimed materials that do not require much processing before reuse. These materials include existing steel from a dismantled buildings, repurposed paving stones and slabs; waste metal and wood from railway tracks; and steel tube from the oil industry. For many smaller companies, the sourcing of these materials may not be a viable option, in which case looking into manufactured materials with a high level of recycled content can be a great

alternative. Sourcing materials such as concrete made with Recycled Crushed Aggregate, or with Pulverised Fuel Ash as opposed to cement; precast concrete blocks; and forest products using waste timber ensure a company is making steps to become environmentally friendly. Natural materials with a low environmental impact might also be sourced, including: Timber, Concrete reinforced with natural fibres, geotextiles, straw bales, and materials credited as being responsibly sourced. While sourcing sustainable materials is thought to pertain mainly to companies in construction, companies in other areas of the Earthmoving Industries might consider their use of sustainable materials by ensuring they do everything possible to recycle waste materials that may be used by others in future construction works.

ive tonnes. In the time it took you to read that sentence, that’s the amount of concrete that was produced world wide. By the time you finish reading this magazine, that number will increase to 317 tonnes - the equivalent weight of three blue whales. Dating back to around 500 BC, concrete has become a staple material in construction. While the material produces a myriad of possibilities for the industry, the impact of dust caused by the use of concrete can cause a multitude of issues for the health of those using it and the local and global environment. With this in mind, Plant Planet takes a look at the danger of dust pollution, and the ways in which the industry can combat these risks.

Dust Pollution is a form of air pollution. Often caused as a bi-product on construction sites, dust particles are considered a PM10 pollutant, meaning the particles are invisible to the naked human eye with particles less than 10 microns in diameter. There are three key types of dust pollution made on construction sites: Silica Dust, also known as RCS, is caused by the use of materials such as concrete, mortar, and sandstone; Wood Dust is created when working with wood based materials, particularly with plywood; and Lower Toxicity Dusts, which are less rich in silica, are made through the use of materials such as gypsum, limestone, marble, and dolomite.

In particular, the hydro-seeding technique, in which a slurry of seed and mulch is applied to the area, is favoured by construction companies. This method is considered to be environmentally friendly and, when implemented properly, can reduce erosion by up to 80%. Whichever method is implemented by construction companies, it is important that it be executed carefully and monitored to ensure that it is working to the best standards.

F

or years, the Earthmoving Industries have been viewed as among the least environmentally friendly around. From deforestation to mining, practices involving heavy machinery are often considered unenvironmentally friendly. However, the past decade has seen a shift in that opinion, particularly by those developing and manufacturing new Heavy Machinery and Plant Technologies. Pressure from world governments and consumers has incentivised manufacturers to develop technology and machinery focussed on lowering the industry’s carbon footprint. This demand has risen over the past few years, with reports such as those published by leading climate scientists in October 2018, warning that we have only a dozen years to limit climate change caused by industrialisation. As a result 2019 seems to be the year for sustainable technology, at least in the Earthmoving Industries, with a multitude of companies releasing Plant Machinery using alternative fuels. Realistically, the environmental report published nine months ago is not so much a catalyst, but a reminder that industrialisation has changed the world in which we live; that it is now down to us to provide solutions to the issues faced by these changes. To explore the

importance of the developments being made, Hannah Bounford explores four key questions: Firstly, what is the ideal environmentally friendly Plant Machinery? Secondly, why should earthmoving industries focus on the development of environmentally friendly Plant Machinery solutions? Further, what examples of environmentally friendly Plant Machinery have been released over the past year? And lastly, How might the development of environmentally friendly Plant Machinery shape the future of the industry? Industry Insight Panel Member David Chuck gives his insights on page 44.

Developing the dream The first thing to consider is what the ideal for Environmentally Friendly Plant looks like. Here, there are a few factors to take into account. The key element to consider, which many companies do already, is machine emissions. The ideal Plant Machinery solution would see sites using heavy machinery across all Earthmoving Industries producing zero emissions at time of use.

Ideally, Plant Machinery would produce zero waste in operation. Here, waste refers to by-products of operation, materials that once used become useless in the operation process. By manufacturing machines that produce zero-waste output or those that reuse waste products created, the Plant Machinery Industry can make strides into the use of renewable energy solutions. Besides environmental factors, it’s important to consider factors that will ensure the machinery be a viable option for consumers. For this, machinery must be as powerful, efficient, and cost-effective as others on the market. While the awareness of environmentally sustainable solutions is growing at an unprecedented pace, there is no use in developing economically friendly Plant Machinery if consumers need to compromise on standards of operation. →

With this fresh in the population’s mind, and the pressure mounting for manufacturers of machinery used in what is considered to be less environmentally friendly sectors, the release of the most advanced environmentally friendly Plant technology has been welcomed in 2019. It now seems that companies in earthmoving industries are in a race to become the leaders in Sustainable technology.

2019: the year of solutions

Combatting CO2 Emissions While it seems that there has been a surge in attention in environmental concerns over the past year, for many industries, including those using Heavy Machinery, regulations are in place to ensure as little damage is done to the environment as possible. As it stands, emissions from NonRoad Manouverable Machinery (NRMM), including Plant, is controlled by government regulations. All Plant Manufacturers and Dealers must ensure that machinery sold within the UK complies with these regulations. Further to this, manufacturers are well aware that governments are putting more effort into ensuring lower CO2 emissions and are therefore striving to design and manufacture machinery with the lowest possible emissions to ensure their product remains compliant for as long as possible. In addition to government regulations, manufacturers are aware of consumer demand for machines with a lower carbon footprint. Carbon emissions have been a widely discussed topic among the broader public discourse

for many years now and many companies are looking to become leaders in environmentally technology within their field. If one thing encompasses the pressure felt by companies to develop sustainable Plant solutions it’s the sensational Environmental Report published in October 2018 by the United Nations. The report detailed the effect of global warming caused by CO2 emissions, stating that the world is already seeing the consequences of Global warming, that rapid and far reaching changes must be made across all industries, and that the change lies in lowering the expected global warming trajectory by less than 1 degree centigrade. While this report

With a worldwide focus on lowering CO2 emissions, 2019 is already shaping up to be the year of Sustainable Plant Solutions. Companies all over the world are making strides in their development of technology to lower machinery emissions. Heavy Machinery giants JCB started the year with the release of the 19C-1E fully electric Excavator, marketed as the first fully electric mini digger on the market. In April, the company further announced the launch of their 30-19E Tele-Truck; a fully electric Teletruk with zero emissions at point of use. The machine boasts a max lift height of 4.1m, a max lift capacity of 3000kg, 360-degree visibility, and a turning circle within its own axis. JCB promise an 8 hour run time with 80% battery consumption and a 1200 charge warranty on the battery. JCB are not the only company to release fully electric machinery in the

The massive trade fair, Bauma, hosted in Munich in April 2019 saw manufacturers from around the globe introduce new innovations in combating CO2 emissions. Among them was construction machinery manufacturer Hidromek with their HICON 7 W Electric Excavator. The HICON 7 W stores energy, much like the 19C-1E, in a lithium ion battery. Similarly, the Hidromek promises 8 hours of operation on a single charge, with charging time just 3 hours at vehicle charging stations. Eight hours operation time seems to be a trend across machines with LithiumIon Batteries. Volvo Construction Equipment’s range of electric compact excavators (EC15 to EC27) and wheel loaders (L20 to L28), which will be released from mid-2020, will use a lithium-ion battery and electric motor to power the hydraulics of each machine. Further, the company intend to stop new deisel engine-based developments of the models in each range. Each machine in the range will be charged using household plugs. All of these developments have a focus on the Construction Industry, Volvo CE’s Director of Electromobility and Automation states ‘As [the EC and L range] are electric, no particulate matter, nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide are released into the environment. This, together with the fact that they have extremely low noise levels, makes them ideal for use in cities and densely populated areas’. Meanwhile, companies such as Komatsu and Caterpillar have been developing electric solutions for application in Mining. Following the launch of the Cat D6 Dozer, the world’s first high drive electric drive dozer, Cat have introduced the R1700

XE, an electric load-haul-dump (LHD) machine for use in underground mining applications. The R1700 XE represents a groundbreaking development in the mining industry with the machine boasting more than a 10-fold decrease in total energy costs; nearly an 8-fold decrease in generated heat; significantly less noise at the operator’s ear; instant torque from the electric motors; reduced dust levels attributed to not having a conventional diesel-related radiator fan; and reduced tire wear compared with base-line numbers for a deisel-powered R1300 LHD. In April, Komatsu unveiled their miniexcavator for use in both Construction and Mining applications. Equipped with a new in-house developed charger, high-voltage converter and other devices, Komatsu promise excavation performance on par with the internal combustion model of the same power output, while achieving zero exhaust gas emissions and a dynamic reduction in noise levels. While the machine doesn’t quite match the charging standards of other electric miniexcavators, allowing for 2-6 hours of operation from a full charge, this can be forgiven as the machine allows for quick charging. It is not only electric powered solutions that have been unveiled this year. Case Construction have recently unveiled the world’s first wheel loader to run entirely on alternative fuel. ProjectTETRA, Case’s methane-powered wheel loader concept, produces 95% less CO2 when running on biomethane, 90% less nitrogen dioxides and 99% lower particulate matter than a diesel-powered equivalent. It delivers an 80% reduction in overall

emissions and also achieves a 50% reduction in drive-by noise levels. The machine’s fuel source is produced from biodigesters from waste products such as waste food, wood chippings, and animal waste. Carl Gustaf Goränsson, President of Construction, explains ‘Biomethane was the most logical choice for the wheel loader. We needed a fuel that could provide the drive and power that our customers demand. The fuel needed to be readily available, easy to refuel and power through a full day of work. We wouldn’t compromise on performance, so we set our designers quite a challenge.’ ProjectTETRA offers a sustainable solution by recycling waste that would otherwise contribute to the worldwide greenhouse gas crisis.

Looking to a sustainable future Here, just a handful of solutions from the Plant Machinery industry have been explored. The development of these machines and technologies powering them will undoubtedly shape Earthmoving industries as we know them - from the actual work to the outside perspective of Earthmoving Industries as un-environmentally friendly. Over the next two pages, our Industry Insights Panel Member, David Chuck, will give his thoughts on how the development of sustainable plant technology will shape different aspects of the industry.

Industry insights How will sustainable machinery shape an industry? David Chuck Says: This is of course a very topical subject and just as the automotive industry is having to adapt, so too is the construction machinery sector. As more environmentally-friendly construction machines become more readily available, an increasing number of projects will specify that these machines are used. City Low Emissions Zones will certainly become more widespread. For example, The Mayor of London has set a goal aiming to ensure that the centre of the British capital is an ultra – low emission zone by 2020. That is just 12 months away, so the clock is definitely ticking! It means that construction machines will have to be either zero- emission vehicles or ultra-low emission vehicles. Construction works around sensitive

areas such as hospitals and built-up spaces will have to be as quiet as possible and involve as fewer pollutants as possible. Another change to earthmoving industries going forward will be the tender process where the requirement for using low emission or zero emission machinery will be written into the initial tender for the project. Public opinion is influencing the industry too. It is true to say that ‘diesel’ has become a negative term in the public conscious over the last few years, and this is a sentiment that is indeed getting stronger. As manufacturers are being forced to produce more environmentally-friendly machines by utilising more hybrid and fully electric systems, the by-product is that these machines can then be adapted more easily to operate autonomously.

Another feature that will be built into these new ‘green’ machines is (IOT) The Internet of Things. This will enable these machines to talk to one another, connect to online servers enabling the collection of valuable data. Such data can then provide actionable insights which in turn will help contractors optimise the safety, production and efficiency of their operations. The spread of the controversial 5G network around the world will help accelerate this further. Leading on from this, major infrastructure projects such as HS2 will be using autonomous vehicles on parts of its construction works. These vehicles will be safer to operate and more productive with less noise and less pollution. However, for large scale earthmoving operations with large machines, the near future reality is that the machines will incorporate a combination of electrification, hybridisation and ultra-low diesel technology until large battery technology keeps pace. The next generation of Carbon-Ion batteries will help. Bauma 2019, which has just been held in Munich Germany and is the largest construction plant show in the world, very much reiterated this message. This year, the emphasis on new machine launches focused on electric, hybrid and autonomous vehicles and this will most definitely shape the earthmoving industries going forward. auma, hosted at Neue Messe Munchen in Munich, is the world’s largest trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment. The 2019 show, hosted from the 8th to the 14th April, proved to be the most successful in the exhibitions 65-year history. Over the course of the exhibition over 3,500 companies from 63 countries displayed their machinery and technology, while more than 250,000 visitors from outside of Germany watched on. In his opening speech on the 8th April 2019, Bavarian Minister President Markus Soder said, “Highly innovative and gigantic construction machines from all parts of the world demonstrate the progress that has been achieved by the construction industry. The latest machines are even all-electric and emission-free. The construction industry is the indicator for our economic strength.’

operations for use in inner city areas; and finally, aspects of increased safety. Also introducing electric excavators to their range of machinery were Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). The company’s electric mini-excavator, the ECR25, is fitted with lithium -ion batteries and one electric motor which powers the hydraulics and attachment. The batteries store enough energy to power the machine for eight hours. This time span seems pretty standard in lithium-ion battery powered excavators. Alongside the compact excavator, Volvo CE released the L25 compact wheel loader, the second in their electric machinery range. The L25 incorporates two

This show of strength was apparent from the off. This year was one of the largest for new machinery releases. Companies including Caterpillar, Hyundai, Doosan, Hydrema, and Case Construction exhibited new machinery, technologies and prototypes across the seven-day event. Alternative energy solutions were key this year, electromobility and self-drive systems proved big draws to multiple stands. Among them, Hitatchi released the prototype of the ZE85 zero-emission electric excavator. The excavator, shown in the demo area, was produced as a joint venture between Hitatchi Construction Machinery Co Ltd and KTEG. The excavator exemplifies the three main draws of electric machinery in construction: firstly, increased power management; secondly, exceptionally quiet

dedicated electric motors, one for the drivetrain and one for the hydraulics. Decoupling the subsystems has led to higher efficiency in both the systems and the entire machine. Both the ECR25 and L25 have onboard chargers that enable overnight charging via a regular household plug socket. Volvo have further promised a fast charging option, however this requires more powerful grid access. Volvo CE’s Director of Electromobility and Automation, Scott Young, siad: ‘The ECR25 and L25 are revolutionary machines that demonstrate Volvo CE’s commitment to future technology. As the machines are electric, no particulate matter, nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide are released into the environment. This, together with the fact that they have extremely low noise levels, make them ideal for use in cities and densely populated areas.’ Sustainable technology also proved a hit within the ESTA Awards of Excellence, hosted by the KHL group in Munich. The SLGS makes the installation process of wind turbine blades safer, more economical and in many cases also greener. The system eliminates the need to fell trees to erect turbines in forested areas, as it is attached to the main boom on the side facing the load. A rope is secured at the top of

The seat is controlled by two joysticks used to manoeuvre the seat into place next to the operator, the operator can then transfer into the external seat and use the joysticks to elevate themselves into the cab. The seat then returns to the starting point, out of the way of operation. The pair of joysticks allow for quick and convenient access to the cab, ensuring that the operator is completely self-reliant.

A cable pulley with two connections to the outsides of the rotor blade yoke runs along the boom rope during the hoisting process. With its own power supply in the yoke, the two connections to the SGLS are tensioned so that the blade is stabilised in the wind and can also be moved into the correct angle for installation on the hub. Since the horizontal application of force on the blade by the main boom is perfectly aligned, the SLGS significantly improves the load control during the blade installation. One of the most anticipated companies exhibiting among the Plant Planet team was Case Construction Equipment. The company, who celebrated their 50th Anniversary at Bauma, unveiled their prototype for an accessible Backhoe Loader. The machine represents a shift in thinking towards a more accessible and inclusive industry, complete with chair elevator and the option for hand controls in the cab to allow those with limited lower body mobility to be in operation. CASE Compact Product Line Director Egidio Galano noted ‘As we look to the future, we feel it is vital that CASE machines are accessible to all. What this prototype demonstrates is our continued mission to foster an inclusive community throughout our network of operators, ensuring the needs of the people behind our machines are always catered for. Having already been a pioneering player in the creation

The sentiment that you don’t know how big bauma is until you’ve been proved, once again, to be true. In January 2019, the Plant Planet Team visited LAMMA’19 at the Birmingham NEC, at which JCB provided one of the biggest displays of it’s machinery in the UK. At 2.54 km2 the NEC, as the UK’s biggest exhibition space, is dwarfed by Messe Munchen. The exhibition space for bauma alone was 614,000m2 this year, nearly 2.5 times the size of the whole NEC exhibition space.

As a result, companies exhibiting at bauma put months of planning into their exhibition space. One of the most impressive was Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe. The company’s exhibition space this year consisted of 2705m2, used to launch the company’s vision of the future, including 6 brand new machines. Among these machinery releases was the A-Series range of excavators and wheel loaders. A selection of the Stage V compliant range was on display. The flagship models, the 22-ton HX220A L and the 30-ton HX300A L incorporate a range of Hyundai’s new technologies, including: EPFC or Electric Positive Flow Control. EPFC. Resulting in the improvement of fuel efficiency and controllability by a flow reduction technique for excavator operations. Auto Safety Lock, preventing unintended operation/start of the machine of the excavator in order to improve safety. The MC will automatically control the grading with the bucket tip or face and will have an automatic stop control: up, down, forward and cabin protection. EPIC or Electric Pump Independent Control, which reduces the pump flow rate during levelling & truck loading operation by controlling the pump’s displacement individually. Further to this, all A-Series excavators will incorporate new service features with a goal to increase machine uptime. Alongside the A-Series Excavators, Hyundai released the first look at the series’ HL wheel loaders. These machines were produced in answer to the demand for heavy wheel loaders in the European Market. The 19-ton HL960A, powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 Stage V engine, like the excavators, includes a plethora of technological improvements. IWM for improved fuel efficiency An intelligent work mode (IWM)

optimizes the engine performance to increase engine torque at a lower rpm. This provides just another means for improved fuel efficiency, while optimising engine power and improving engine response time. Operator convenience and safety come first The large-sized operators cabin features an electro-hydraulic joystick to conveniently control all functions of the front-loading arm. Optionally the machine can be equipped with a second advanced steering lever enabling driving the machine by joystick – a function much requested by many operators. Remote door control With the convenience and safety of the operators in mind, HCE has developed a remote door opening system. This allows the operator to open the cabin door already when approaching the machine, reducing several risks when opening the door while standing on the steps. Radar & Secondary Monitor The Hyundai A-series wheel loaders are standard-equipped with a rearview camera. For increased safety on

the job site, an advanced 4-camera system is available as option. The highly advanced AAVM (Advanced Around View Monitoring) system is a combination of AVM which secures the field of vision in all directions by nine views including a 3D bird’s eye view, and IMOD, the intelligent moving object detection. In addition, Hyundai offers a reverse drive radar system, similar to that of a car, allowing to detect obstacles by day or night. All these safety features installed, makes the Hyundai A-series wheel loaders become one of the safest in the industry. Themes of sustainable development and inclusion set the scene for Bauma 2019. As the final expo in the current decade, perhaps it could be said that themes of sustainability and inclusion presented by countless companies at Bauma 2019 will set the scene for the coming decade. Vertikal Days 2019 took place from 15th-16th May. As a specialist event for businesses showcasing access platforms, cranes, telehandlers, and associated lifting equipment, the show provided exhibitors the opportunity to connect with UK based businesses in the access industry. This was the show’s second year at Donington Park, Leicestershire, which has proved a successful location for international access. The only drawback of the location being the 25m height limit on machinery, meaning that many exhibitors could not display their equipment’s full reach. With record numbers of exhibitors and machines on display, the event proved successful for many exhibiting companies. Construction Industry giants Kobleco sold the new 150 tonne CKE1350 G-2 Crawler Crane to rental company GH Johnson. The machine features a long boom configuration to achieve wider working ranges, with a long boom length

of 82.3 meters. The base machine is just 3.2m and total transportation weight of the CKE1350 is only 39.7 tonnes, which complies with European Transport Regulations and reduces the number of trailers required for transport. The show also provided exhibitors the opportunity to showcase machinery released at Bauma 2019 in the UK. Hot off its release in Munich, Liebherr exhibited the new LTM 1650-8.1 (pictured below). The machine can be supplied with two telescopic boom lengths: 54 or 80 metres. The company’s concept is to deliver the ultimate crane on eight axles, a concept that was started with the LTM 1500-8.1 which dominated the market for over 20 years. The machine includes a variety of signature features from Liebherr, including VarioBallast and their Single Engine Concept. The VarioBallast feature enables the crane’s ballast radius to be adjusted using

a hydraulic slewing mechanism. The LTM 1650-8.1 operates with a maximum ballast of 155 tonnes and, in an effort to further economic value, the ballast plates across all large LTM cranes have been developed to be interchangeable. The crane also features the ECOdrive concept by Liebherr, allowing for enhanced drive properties to save fuel and reduce

The VarioBallast feature enables the crane’s ballast radius to be adjusted using a hydraulic slewing mechanism noise. The eight-cylinder diesel engine is accompanied by an innovative 12-speed ZF TraXon Torque gearbox, while a torque converter enhances manoeuvring and starting the crane. →

R.Collard Ltd. Purchase Two RubbleMasters from Red Knight 6 Ltd. R.Collard Ltd, the leading demolition and waste management business in the South-East of England, have selected two RubbleMaster impact crushers from UK supplier Red Knight 6 Ltd (RK6). R.Collard Ltd were founded over 25 years ago and currently have 240 employees, 6 depots and over £34m turnover last year, making them one of the leading businesses in their sector, covering Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. The company, who specialise in recycling, haulage, earthworks, skip hire and ready mixed concrete, as well as demolition and waste management selected an RM 70GO! 2.0 and an RM 100GO! after extensive demonstrations of both machines. The RM 100GO! was the first machine on trial to fulfil the need to process concrete, demolition waste and recycled washed materials crushed down to a more profitable size. The trial lasted a week and satisfied the cost factors vs the quality of output and therefore greater and quicker return on investment, as well as the variety of material that it can deal with. The RM

100GO! will be used at R.Collard Ltd’s Eversley quarry site.

Both the RM 70GO! 2.0 and the RM 100GO! specialise in processing concrete with rebar, asphalt, C&D waste and rock, producing a wide range of materials on demand. The RM 70GO! 2.0 is one of the most mobile tracked conveyors in the range and offers huge flexibility to customers. The RM 100GO! is the real work horse in the range, processing up to 275 tonnes per hour and ready to start crushing in just 20 minutes from unloading.

At the same time as the RM 100GO! demonstration, R.Collard Ltd were transferring material for processing from their Reading depot over to Eversley at huge expense. The company had trialled compact jaw crushers, but none were robust enough to handle the required material. “It wasn’t until we got a 25 tonne machines that we were comfortable with the machine, but that was too big for the yard. The guys at RK6 recommend the 19.5 tonne RM 70GO! for trial. We’d been advised to take a jaw crusher for the material, but the RM 70GO! impact crusher offered us

The future of Plant machinery technology on display at plantworx 2019

P

lantworx, taking place at the East of England Arena in Peterborough this June, is the UK’s largest outdoor expo for the Construction Machinery Industry. Organised by the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the company’s vision is to ‘create a sustainable biennial event for the construction equipment industry, shaped by the industry’. This year, Plantworx will take place from 11th-13th June. The show will feature a variety of live demonstrations by exhibiting companies, innovative stands, and working machinery. Alongside this, the 2019 show will be the first to include a ‘fly zone’. The zone, arising from a partnership with Construction Operations for Mobile IT (COMIT), will occupy 2300 m² of exhibition space, situated at an indoor event space. The ‘Fly Zone’ will offer visitors a chance to view, try out, and learn about the use of drones in the construction industry. Among the drones on display, visitors can look forward to seeing the Topcon Falcon 8 Survey UAV, a rotary wing UAS designed for inspection, monitoring, and mapping applications. Besides the ‘Fly Zone’ Plantworx 2019 will feature a Classic Plant Exhibition.

Jeff Schofield, Plantworx’s marketing manager, is organising the classic plant display, he said, “We are all rightly proud of our industry’s heritage and history. The Plantworx team is very much looking forward to paying tribute to these machines at this year’s event. Visitors will be able to walk around the exhibits and chat to the manufacturers, owners and enthusiasts, who in many cases have via a labour of love, painstakingly restored the machines to their former glory. We envisage that the Classic Plant arena will be a valuable addition to the show complementing the cutting-edge industry innovations our exhibitors will have on display on their stands around the show.”

Key features of the new 131X, 140X and 150X include: a wider operator cab for all-day comfort, in cab noise reductions of up to 68%, modern styling with durable strike points to reduce total ownership cost and increased diameter high-flow pipework to boost efficiency. The two larger models also deliver a 6% improvement in tonnes per litre productivity.

Each Classic Machine on show will be in working order and visitors can look forward to a Vehicle Pageant each day of the show, with commentary from Classic Plant Enthusiasts. Another Classic fixture of Plantworx will return to the event this year. Those that were remiss that JCB were

Hawkins, an avid supporter of a changing and evolving industry, is passionate about the opportunities that simulator training can offer. The training of Plant Operators can prove difficult, and dangerous, owing to the need of the instructor to be ‘hanging’ off the side of an excavator while giving instructions. Using simulators, Hawkins and his team are able to give Plant Operators key insights into machine operation in a safe environment before getting behind the wheel of a real machine.

The latest news from the expo is that Vehicle Vision, the developers behind the pioneering Audi Cam service for Audi UK, are bringing their innovative personalised video apps and software to the Heavy Equipment sector at Plantworx 2019 (11-13 June 2019, East of England Arena, Peterborough).

This technology may also prove important in getting a younger generation to consider Plant Operation as a potential career. It’s been widely discussed that the Plant Machinery and, by extension, Construction Industries have been facing a skills shortage as young people are encouraged to follow other career paths. Using this portable technology will allow young people to experience working as a Plant Operator through school experience days run by Plantforce.

The app and internet browser-based software has simplified the service and repair process; broken down the barriers between the workshop environment and the customer; and, in the age of online research, delivered personalised video that supports the customer through the buying process of big-ticket items.

Simulation technology may address the skills shortage faced by the construction industry at this time. for Plant Operators. The team, who have worked closely with UK Plant Operators founder Dale Hawkins on the project, have already trained over 150 plant operators for the Hinkley Point C project. Hawkins says ‘We usually see around 10-15 Plant Operators training with us per week’ A team of immersive training experts, including Hawkins, will be at the Simulation Zone and available to guide individuals and companies through the process and benefits of training operators through virtual reality simulators.

The use of video in car dealerships has revolutionised the automotive franchised marketplace – in the industry’s quest for clarity and transparency in its customer relationships.
