However, I must take just a moment to address the elephant in the room. There is no denying that the ongoing turmoil surrounding Brexit has had a major impact across all sectors of the Construction Industry over the past few months. At the time of publication, no new plans have been made by the recenty re-elected govenment. 25th November 2019, Komatsu Ltd announced that its joint project with Japan Mine Action Service (President: Junji Suzuki) (hereafter “JMAS”), a certified specific non-profit organization of Japan, supported by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be introduced as a side event at the fourth review conference of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in Oslo, Norway from November 25 to 29, 2019. Specifically, the joint project involves the removal of landmines, disposal of unexploded bombs (UXBs) and development of communities in the anti-personnel mine-contaminated areas in Cambodia and Laos.

As of September 30, 2019, Komatsu and JMAS had disposed of a total of over 5,700 anti-personnel landmines and unexploded cluster bomb submunitions on a cumulative basis, built 10 elementary schools, and built/ repaired roads which add up to 70 km long. Komatsu will continue efforts to remove anti-personnel landmines and UXBs and to develop communities.

Genair win a green apple award for their all weather all electric compressor WEST

Midlands based, GenAir, a leading hirer of low emission air compressors, have had the environmental qualities of their All Weather All Electric Air Compressor formally recognised by the internationally respected campaigners, The Green Organisation. Three senior representatives from GenAir were invited to a glittering presentation ceremony, hosted at the Houses of Parliament in November, where they received their award. The All Weather All Electric air compressor has a working pressure of 10 –190psi with a maximum free air delivery of up to 400cfm. With a whisper quiet noise level of just 67dB (A) and protected in a fully weatherproof canopy, these brand new units are perfect for use in all situations and particularly in areas governed by emission and noise rules. There are many advantages for using an

electric compressor as opposed to a diesel powered set. Because most diesel sets can only run for about 12 hours before they need refuelling, their fuel levels will require constant monitoring. This can distract an operator away from more important tasks. As Genair’s electric compressors run entirely free from fuel, the environmental damage from diesel spillage is completely eliminated. Furthermore, a diesel engine’s filters must be replaced every 500 hours – that’s every three weeks for a project that runs for 24 hours. Electric compressors can be left alone for up to 4,000 hours before maintenance is needed, giving them a significant advantage on all major programmes. The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries. The Green Organisation is an international, independent, non-political,

non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. B45E demo leads to quarry purchase THE

Hillhouse Quarry Group, the industry leading whinstone quarry operation based in Ayrshire, has chosen Bell Equipment UK to supply its latest fleet addition, a new B45E Articulated Dump Truck (ADT). Brought on board to perform demanding tasks, including stock handling and haul back up, the new E-series truck was selected over two competitor models based on operator preference, residual value, fuel cost, service cost and Bell Equipment’s assuring warranty. “As a hard-stone quarry, producing readymixed concrete, asphalt, concrete blocks and drystone, we need trucks capable of taking the strain,” explains Justin Gill, Operations Director of The Hillhouse Group. “We pride ourselves on having the ability to take an uncompromising approach to quality and service when supplying our customers with quarry products and feel similarly about selecting the right machines to perform the associated excavating tasks. “Having used Bell D-series trucks for 15 years, we’re definitely familiar with the manufacturer’s build quality and capabilities. Bell is a brand we’ve always been impressed with, and we’ve certainly made the most of the machines we’ve bought over the years; having routinely serviced and rebuilt trucks to get the most out of each individual machine. As a result, the hardworking ADTs within our fleet have contributed to our production of up to one million tonnes of quarry product every year.” Although still productive, with well over 20,000 hours on the clock, Justin acknowledges that the age profile of his existing Bell trucks, combined with their rebuild histories, pointed to a replacement requirement. best meet his team’s requirements, Bell Equipment placed a B45E demo vehicle in the Hillhouse quarry so operators could get a true feel of the handling capabilities of a modern Bell truck. Impressed with the machine’s function and capacity, as well as the E-series’ advanced onboard technological features, Hillhouse operators made Bell their first choice, leading Justin to secure a deal with Bell Equipment’s Regional Sales Manager for Scotland, Russell Conn. “We’re delighted to have supplied The Hillhouse Quarry Group with an updated Bell machine,” Russell says. “The E-series offers truly powerful robust machines that enhance any fleet. All trucks in the series are fitted with the latest technology as standard to provide industry leading features geared towards improving safety, productivity and the overall operating experience. “It has also been great to hear the positive reports from the quarry regarding the ‘refresher training’ that we provided on delivery. As manufacturers’ makes and models vary significantly, not all machine operation is the same, so even qualified, experienced drivers can benefit from a

training session in a new machine’s cab. “We offered Justin’s team the training expertise of Bell Equipment’s Mark Lockett who took a functional approach to bringing the quarry’s operators up-to-speed on the new machine; not only demonstrating the basics, but giving a tutorial on how to get the most out of the onboard software, and performing the vital daily checks. This valuable session provided operators with the knowledge and confidence to achieve maximum efficiency from the new B45E and understand how to keep the truck performing soundly.” Derived from proven technology and decades of experience, the truck has been fitted with a 390 kW/2 460 Nm inline six-cylinder engine from Mercedes Benz. Designed to deliver the low fuel consumption typical of Bell ADTs, this E-series model also features wet brakes, a spacious cab offering great comfort and visibility, and ‘ease-of-operation’ features that use real-time data collection. “We’re very pleased with the new B45E,” Justin concludes, “and we can’t fault the service and maintenance scheme we’ve received. As such, we anticipate the machine’s efficient, powerful performance will last for many years to come.”

Bowsers, suppliers of fuel bowsers throughout south of England have added to their bowser fleet by purchasing several new Chieftain bowsers via Red Knight 6 Ltd, the UK distributor for Chieftain.

Shropshire plant hire company have invested £12 million in a deal with Redditch based MarubeniKomatsu for new plant machinery for their hire fleet. Ridgway Rentals Ltd have placed an order of 130 new Komatsu machines, the order includes a mixture of excavators, bulldozers and loading shovels ranging from 2.5 to 50 tonnes. “Our focus on this latest investment has been on updating our fleet with highly efficient, environmentally friendly equipment” says company chairman, Tim Jones (pictured) Ridgway have seen demand for their plant hire services soar over recent years, especially to environmental agencies and in the waste & recycling industries. They have become renowned for specialist machine hire that exactly matches their customers’ requirements plus they offer these machines on long term contract hire, an essential budgeting tool in today’s uncertain climate.

Manufacturers of small plant and tools are always improving their designs to ensure that safety even when it comes to cold emulsion sprayers. Belspray sprayers are now available in 25 litre and 205 litre hand-operated sprayers, motorised pump units and motorised sprayers with drum-lifting which has a three-wheel trolley chassis. These motorised sprayers are able to spray both K1.40 and K1.60 grades of cold bitumen emulsion. With a slightly different plumbing arrangement and a duplex suction pipe which allows for recirculation of material back to the drum, the Belspray motorised sprayers are also able to spray most concrete cure material. The 25 litre hand-operated sprayer was introduced when the supply of cold bitumen emulsion in 25 litre drums was greatly increased. The drums are much safer to handle on site without the use of mechanical handling.

site safe sprayers The Belspray 205 litre motorised pump units can be fitted to the bed of a lorry or on a trailer and comes complete with 30m of hose. The drums of emulsion or concrete cure can be loaded at the depot and there left on the lorry. There is no need to off-load the drums on site. The newest design of Belspray sprayers have a trolley chassis for use with 205 litre drum. These sprayers have drum lifting incorporated which allows the operative to load a 205 litre drum safely. Both the pump units and drum-lift sprayers are available with a choice of Briggs & Stratton or Honda petrol or Yanmar diesel electric engines. The diesel engine version of these sprayers was introduced for use on sites where the use of petrol engines was not permitted. A conversion kit is now available for the Belspray Classic motorised four-wheel trolley sprayer which allows the use of 25 litre drums. HS2: A project Derailed? MUCH

has happened in the world of HS2 following our last article in the June 2019 issue of Plant Planet. Since then, Boris Johnson has become Prime Minister and Brexit continues to rumble on. At the same time, the future of HS2 comes under increasing scrutiny. The most significant of news surrounding HS2 since our June article, has been the announcement of an Independent Review. This is being conducted by Douglas Oakervee, who was the former Chairman of CrossRail. The Review will look at whether, and if so, how, HS2 should proceed using all existing evidence on the project including its benefits and impacts, affordability and efficiency, deliverability and scope. Its

phasing, including its relationship with Northern Powerhouse Rail is also being reviewed. A conclusion to the Review was expected in Autumn 2019 but at the time of press, this has not been released. However, in the meantime the preliminary works are continuing. There is one exception: This being a ban which has been imposed on felling any more ancient woodlands until the result of the Review has been announced. In Warwickshire, they are continuing with the work of installing the ducting for a power supply for the Tunnel Boring Machines that will construct the Long Itchington Wood Tunnel. The LM joint venture (a collaboration between Laing O’Rourke and J Murphy & Sons working on the Northern section

Each year, countless articles aim to predict the top trends to take the Construction Industry in the following year. Top of the trends lists for the past few years now has been the Drone (or UAV); begging the question: How long can something be a trend before it’s accepted as conventional?

Once a novel way of taking photos and video footage, UAVs have become popular tools used across multiple industries. The rising popularity has resulted in the publication of legislation covering the safe use of UAVs in the UK. Why have UAVs become so popular outside of the photography and film industries? In the Construction Industry, UAV technology has become popular for a multitude of reasons. Each of these reasons have one unifying factor: Efficiency. The efficiency of UAV technology benefits construction practices before Plant Machinery even breaks ground. Every construction site must be surveyed

and mapped before any construction work can start to take place. Previously, this would have been completed using traditional photography equipment and taking measurements manually. Often, more than one person would be contracted to review a site. With the introduction of UAVs, the need for multiple people to be on site to complete mapping has been eliminated. In addition, the UAV is able to collect and process photo and video data at a faster rate than an individual manually mapping a site. Some sources suggest that the use of UAVs for surveying and mapping can save companies up to 20x the original costs of these activities. Further to this, UAVs are able to send data directly to

software on computers in real time, making them not only cheaper but more time effective. Some question the benefits of this efficient method by highlighting the fact that UAV’s eliminate the need for man power - thus resulting in less job opportunities in the Construction Industry. However, it might be argued that the use of UAVs in the Construction Industry creates job opportunities for those with more

specialised knowledge of the technology. Further, the ongoing skills gap currently experienced by the Construction Industry suggests that, in terms of creating career

The ability to take measurements, produce thermo maps, and access hard to reach sites, among other features, have cemented them as a beneficial piece of equipment for a range of companies. Further, as the use of UAVs for specialised purposes, such as construction site inspections, increases, software designed to aid these functions will be developed and made readily available. One such development in UAV technology that may have an impact on usage in the Construction Industry is the

introduction of pre-planned flight paths. This software, such as that developed by DroneDeploy, allows users to plan a UAV’s flight from their computer desktop. This software eliminates the need for someone to manually operate the drone’s flight, further increasing the potential efficiency of the device. While all this answers the question to why UAV technology has been a top ‘trend’ in the Construction Industry for the past few years, it’s important to question whether the trend has passed, leaving UAVs commonplace. It’s no secret that more companies are employing UAV technology throughout their working practices, and that smaller companies not investing in the practice may be loosing business as a result. However, with the cost of UAVs decreasing, and the technology readily available increasing, it will be surprising if UAV technology does not have a significant impact on shaping the Industry in the next decade.

past decade has seen a significant shift in the types of technology used in the Construction Industry. Each year predicted trends are focussed on more advanced technology. Now, at the end of the decade, the Industry is starting to look to the trends that will dominate Construction in 2020 and how they might develop as the new decade continues. This issue, Plant Planet investigates five trends set to lead the Industry into the new decade. From Augmented Reality to Autonomous solutions, 2020 seems to be the year that Industry 4.0 will take hold.

Augmented Reality Augmented Reality (AR) Technology has been growing for some years now. The technology allows computer generated images to be super-imposed onto a user’s view of the real world. The most common use of AR in everyday life is arguably satnav systems, found in most modern cars and smartphones. In the Construction Industry, AR has already played a part in architectural plans, bringing 2D blueprints

to life using AR glasses or headsets. The technology brings multiple other benefits to the Construction Industry. Most notably, recent years have seen AR being used to aid teams with real-time onsite decisions. Programmes using AR technology can be used to give measurements of a space’s physical properties, allowing workers to ensure that measurements of the intended build match the measurements of the components they are dealing with. This use of AR allows problems in a project to be assessed and corrected quickly.

Cloud collaboration allows for the collection of data from machinery and devices across a site, creating a real time understanding of site operation. As individual devices collect information, the data is uploaded to a central ‘cloud’ for storage, where it can be accessed and used by others. This process is of particular use to site managers and contractors in their planning for construction work to be undertaken. Already, numerous programmes exist that use cloud collaboration to provide site managers with a clear idea of how their site is being run.

Cloud Collaboration The introduction of Cloud Collaboration has already improved efficiency on construction sites. Entering the new decade, technology growth across industries is not expected to slow soon. As a result, it is expected that sites will become

The Internet of Things Cloud collaboration requires investment in the Internet of Things (IoT). This technology, which allows machinery with sensors installed to monitor operating conditions, performance, and physical states, has been funded by the Construction Plant Industry for a few years now. In the next decade, it is expected that IoT will become integral to the way in which the industry operates.

2020 construction trends • Feature IoT allows operators to monitor the performance of their fleet. In addition, the IoT enables efficient equipment servicing and repairs. Preventing failure is more efficient than repairing issues after they have already occurred. Already, buying a new piece of equipment from companies such as JCB, Caterpillar, and Komatsu, involves the option for telematic solutions as standard. Further, IoT will play a substantial role in site security. Throughout the next decade, it is fully expected that more machinery tracking devices will be made available. Machinery tracking, made viable by IoT technology, will be available ready installed in Plant in addition to being available as removable devices.

The rise in offsite construction skills The past few years have been impacted by an undisputable skills gap in the Construction Plant Industry. Despite numerous companies and Industry bodies putting forward plans and schemes to attract a workforce to the Industry, the skills gap will remain an ongoing issue. However, the technology arising from the skills gap – solutions proposed by

machinery manufacturers – constitute one of the trends expected to rise in the 2020s: the rise in offsite skills.

Offsite construction will rise along side the modular construction market.

Offsite construction will rise alongside the modular construction market, which is expected to grow at an annual rate of 16.9%. In 2019, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) invested £1.2 million in offsite construction projects. This funding is set to aid the Industry and educational establishments by providing access to a range of learning materials. In turn, these will impact the expansion of the offsite construction sector throughout the next decade. Steve Radley, CITB policy director, has been quoted: ‘Offsite construction creates a range of exciting new skills needs and opportunities, including in assembly, digital technologies, and installation. We’re looking to build these into training at both entry level and also to enable upskilling within the industry, because getting this right can mean a more multiskilled, diverse and productive workforce’.

Green Technology Environmentally friendly equipment is a fast-growing sector of the Construction Industry. As public and political pressure continues to grow around issues such as global warming and climate change, the whole of the Construction Industry is making strides to lower carbon emissions. In October 2019, at the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Conference, CPA Chief Kevin Minton expressed that the Industry is experiencing increased pressure to be more Eco Friendly in the next decade as ‘the demand for environmentally friendly practices continues’. During 2019, a number of companies released equipment, concept and otherwise, aimed at reducing carbon emissions on construction sites. Autonomous machinery With new technology obviously a priority for the Construction Industry, it’s no question that Autonomous Machinery will become a leading trend throughout the next decade. Reports supporting this sentiment suggest that the Autonomous Construction Equipment Market is expected to grow with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 28.6% during the 2018 to 2026 forecast period.

For Plant Machinery Operation, Autonomous Technology already plays a role in the productivity of a single operator. Operator productivity has been a key focus in the Construction Plant Sector as a lack of skilled workers means that existing operators must work efficiently. Existing autonomous solutions, such as pre-planned digging programmes in excavators, aid this goal. However, it looks like the next decade will look to developing fully autonomous Plant Machinery. Already throughout 2019, a number of autonomous machines have been released, including the Bomag ‘Robomag’ Vibratory Roller and a range of remote-controlled machinery from Volvo CE. It seems that the development of Autonomous Machinery will grow side by side with the Evolution of 5G data and new robotics techniques. Perhaps 2020 will be the decade that we see the first fully autonomous construction site.

2020 marks the start of a new decade, a decade of significant change for the Construction Plant Industry, I believe. Many of these changes are driven by making the industry safer for workers, better for the environment and more efficient in terms of productivity. These, in my opinion, are some predicted trends to watch out for in 2020 and beyond:

Excavators to be more versatile As excavators become increasingly expensive due to engine emission legislation, etc. they will need to have higher and higher utilisation figures on site to make their purchase price viable. To this end, they will become tool carriers and have an ever-growing range of attachments which can be fitted to them.

Telematics fitted as standard Excavators will also be fitted with auto-digging functions, such as the Volvo Co-Pilot system, to make them more productive. Similarly, there will be a shift towards fitting telematics as standard on most machines, not just excavators. For the owner or hirer, it means their machine is being operated as efficiently as possible, is being maintained correctly and adds another layer of protection for their expensive investment against theft. JCB already supply all their construction machines

This is an obvious one, of course. Fully electric, battery-powered and hybrid construction machines will become increasingly prevalent. Besides the obvious one of zero or lower engine emissions, these items of plant also bring another benefit – reduced noise levels. It will also not necessarily be the smaller items of plant that become battery powered. Liebherr now have a LB16 Unplugged Drill Rig.

Wider use of suction/vacuum excavation With increasing penalties issued to contractors who cut through vital cables and services such as fibre optic, it is anticipated that power-suction excavation will continue to be more widely used. More on that in the March issue of Plant Planet!

Fully autonomous

Drones on construction sites

This one is more of a consideration for the future, but a lot of research and development is being carried out in this area especially by Volvo Fully Autonomous Construction Vehicles. Bomag has a working fully autonomous vibratory roller, and I can see the market going further and further in this direction.

I personally consider these to be an item of construction plant. As such, I believe we will be seeing more drones in action for all manner of tasks on construction sites, such as surveying, inspection work and site progress photography, to name but a few.

More built-in safety features Even the site dumper is undergoing major changes at present, such as the ‘Dual View’ by Wacker Neuson, along with telematics, electric-powered machines and an increasing number of built-in safety features. Mecalac now offers a Shield package which includes start/drive interlock, handbrake warning, front facing camera fuel loss warning, stop/start control, idle shut-off and park brake test. This can also be upgraded to Shield PRO which adds skip interlock, tilt limit, rollover lockout and a custom-speed limiter, all via Bluetooth to an iPad or Android tablet, to the standard features.

Simulators to feature in more training programmes As machines get more complex, simulators will be used more for

It is in the process of constructing three houses, which will then be assessed to ensure that they meet the relevant building standards. These are just a few trends which I expect we will see more of next year and beyond. But, thanks to ‘The Internet of Things’, the construction industry is now truly embracing digitalisation, which is being helped along by the introduction of 5G networks. The rise of autonomous machinery and its effect on the plant insurance industry. The effect on insurance premiums that Autonomous Machinery will create is very much a matter of differing opinions. Some insurers may well take the attitude of sucking it and seeing how things develop and with this attitude they are likely to offer premiums similar to that of conventional machinery. There will be other insurers who will take a much more cautious approach and happily quote themselves out of the market to watch their less cautious competitors. This may well

Liability insurance rates derive from years of claims experience by each insurer and the rates between the major insurers in plant and machinery are pretty much the same as you would expect. However, this historical claims experience is based on the piece of machinery being operated and controlled by a suitably experienced and qualified person. It will be seen as a very different risk when an insurer is asked to quote for liability insurance for an Autonomous Machine. More than at any other time you will

need your insurance broker to firstly be a specialist in the plant insurance market because it will be essential that they fully search the whole of the plant insurance market, and secondly for they themselves to present your risk in a fully transparent way to the Underwriter in order to encourage them to offer the most competitive terms. It is going to be essential to ensure that there are no exclusions of cover within the policy wording and that any special terms are clearly disclosed to you. It is certainly going to be an interesting first few years to see how insurers react to these new risks to consider, and also how the future claims experience materialises.

subject of Construction Plant and Equipment Security is one of the most highly discussed issues in the Construction Industry today. With a rise in organised equipment theft and increased targeting of smaller equipment, it is now more essential than ever to ensure that assets on site are protected. Stolen assets cost the Industry upwards of £800 million per year in the UK; not to mention the incurred cost of lost hours and wasted energy on the part of individual owners. Over the past few years, companies have made significant efforts to develop technology to protect Plant Machinery. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, Plant theft is still relatively common and with only around 10% of reported thefts recovered, it is imperative that companies start looking to

recovery solutions. In the wake of this, GPS tracking is coming to the forefront of security efforts. One company offering extensive GPS tracking solutions, New Zealand based Black International, are looking to make asset protection and recovery ‘as smart and efficient as possible’. Black International are the sole suppliers of the OrchidTM range of tracking devices. The patented range is designed to be small and discreet enough to fit into a range of assets without detection. The range consists of the OrchidTM and OrchidPLUSTM devices.

A builtin sim fitted within each device connects to these technologies, as a result there is no need to purchase a pre-paid sim before installation and use. The devices utilise the machine to machine (M2M) global network to locate assets in under 30 minutes. Black International pride themselves on the ability of each device to locate assets with ‘pinpoint’ accuracy. At only 6mm thick, 35mm long, and 24 mm wide, the Orchid tracker is ideally suited to fit into a range of assets on any site: from heavy plant to small power tools. However, the Orchid has been designed to utilise the battery power of the asset that it is tracking. The tracker will operate on 12v-24v supplies. While this makes it ideal for installation in a variety of battery powered machinery including vehicles and plant and machinery, assets that are not battery powered are not able to be tracked with the device.

Black International’s solution to this comes in the form of the new OrchidPLUS. This upgraded model works in the same way as the original but includes a lithiumion battery. This battery is designed to trickle charge while connected to a power supply of 12v-24v and is capable of lasting 40 days once disconnected. The added battery does make the OrchidPLUS slightly larger, at 41mm long. However, this is a small price to pay for the added benefit.

Although proudly based in New Zealand, the Orchid range is available across the Globe for a range of battery powered devices. The nature of both devices and Black International’s service, makes them an ideal solution to those in the Construction Industry looking to secure their devices.

Once an asset is registered to a specific person, it cannot be reregistered under another name Black International’s Global Asset Register has a variety of benefits. Firstly, once an asset is registered to a specific Orchid device, it cannot be re-registered by another person. Should equipment be stolen, and the thief tries to register the installed Orchid device in their name, Black International will be notified. The company will then notify the original owner to ascertain whether the device has been sold on or obtained illegally. Secondly, the fact that the register is global means that assets can be tracked the world over. All the Orchid device requires is access to signal and power. Should the asset be placed out of GPS range, the owner will be able to see the closest GSM tower to have bounced the device’s signal, giving some idea of where the asset is located. Finally, the Global Asset Register works in conjunction with Police Databases. If police recover an asset registered to Black International’s Global Asset Register, all the police need to do is search the serial number of the asset within the database. From here, the owner will be given all the necessary information regarding where their asset is being held and how they can recover it. October 2019 over 100 key decision makers from the Construction Plant Industry came together at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre, near Coventry, for the Construction PlantHire Association (CPA) Conference. The theme of the day was ‘Planting Resilience: Building for the Future’ – an apt topic as many of the delegates in attendance were keen to hear expert thoughts on issues facing the Industry throughout the next decade. Key among the subjects discussed throughout the day were mental health awareness, plant theft and fraud. In addition to the conference, the CPA hosted an exhibition with companies from across the Industry showcasing a variety of products. The theme of ‘Building for the Future’ was also apparent among the exhibitors, with many showcasing machinery that will have a hand in shaping the next decade. Among these companies: Phoenix International, who demonstrated their Health and Safety Virtual Reality Training; The Lighthouse

Construction Industry Charity, bringing vital information on how employers and employees can cope with mental health issues; and Genquip Groundhog, who exhibited a mobile welfare unit. During his opening speech, CPA Chief Kevin Minton touched on just a couple of the challenges facing the Industry today. Speaking about the current skills gap, the demand for eco-friendly practices and the growth of autonomous machinery, Kevin emphasised the importance of creating resilience in the Plant Industry moving forwards. The conference itself took a new format in 2019. Rather than the traditional key note speeches of the past five conferences in the CPA’s recent history, the October 2019 conference took the form of a series of panel discussions. Some implied that, in an ideal world, they would provide more apprenticeships but feel that they do not have the support or infrastructure. The standout quote of the day came from Bill Hill, Chief Executive of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity: ‘Mental Health is being a decent human being to another human being’ Bill, alongside Merrill Lynch, Director of L Lynch Plant Hire and Haulage, and Andy Burrows, L Lynch’s UK Operations Manager, spoke on the panel during the second session ‘Mental Health Toolkit for Construction’. The topic of mental health provision in the workplace has been on the rise over the past few years. While charities such as the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity have been

CPA Conference • Feature working to support the construction community for decades, the stigma surrounding mental ill-health has remained. In 2019, the Construction Industry has made real strides towards understanding the importance of good mental health and eliminating the stigma surrounding talking about mental health. The impact that mental ill-health has on a workforce was exemplified by Bill Hill’s opening statistics: that 20% of time taken off work as sick leave is connected to mental ill-health, including stress, anxiety and depression; and, even more soberingly, each day two construction workers take their own lives in the UK. In the wake of these grave statistics, much of the discussion generated by audience queries and observations revolved around indications of mental ill-health and how to support the mental wellbeing of employees and co-workers.

Andy spoke on the measures put in place by L Lynch to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace and promote conversations about mental wellbeing. Among these measures is ‘Time to Talk Day’ a day endorsed by the charity Mind as part of their #TimeToChange campaign. The Operations Manager also spoke about Mental Health First Aiders, encouraging companies to take up the practice of training key persons to help guide employees in distress to the relevant help that they need. The afternoon sessions proved informative. The first, a keynote speech and discussion lead by Merryn Myatt on strategies

to deal with threats to a company’s reputation. Key ideas to come out of this session included being aware of how fast information travels online, and ensuring companies have a set-in-stone crisis management plan put in place before a crisis occurs. The second session of the afternoon focussed on one of the most important issues that the Plant-Hire Industry is facing right now: Plant Theft & Fraud. The panel included Paul Skitt, Managing Director of Business and Skills Support, the CPA’s Policy Manager Chris Cassley, Paul Whitehead, Category Manager at Highways England and Mark Warrilow, Skills Stakeholder Manager at HS2. During a presentation by Paul Skill and Chris Cassley, it was established that strategies to support employment and clear career pathways are required to solve the Industry’s ongoing skills gap. In response to these needs, the CPA are becoming involved in trailblazer apprenticeships and the provision local and national training providers that will ensure that CPA members can access high quality training.

Plant theft tends to spike in the winter months, as darker nights are setting in. The panel stressed the importance of the topic as the darker nights set in, as Plant Theft tends to spike in the winter months. Traditionally, Plant theft has taken the form of ‘Smash and Grab’ or ‘Opportunist’ cases. During the panel session, the idea of Plant Theft becoming more sophisticated was raised. Iain Anderson spoke of the risk of criminals going to lengths such as identity fraud to steal Plant. Some companies go as far as to equip themselves with vans with fake liveries and false email addresses to deceive Plant depo employees. Kevin Howells spoke on minimising the catastrophe of Plant theft by registering Plant with Datatag’s CESAR scheme. The scheme has been used to register over 340,000 items of equipment since its introduction. However, the panel also warned of the targeting of smaller classes

Wrapping up the day, Merryn Myatt commented that she was ‘blown away by the forward thinking nature and enthusiasm of the industry’, while many delegates report that the October Conference was ‘the best yet’. The CPA as confirmed that they will return with another Conference in 2020.

is widely acknowledged that mental health is a subject that should be treated with the upmost respect and importance. Many workers within the Construction Industry are victims to mental health related issues.

It is no wonder, then, that there is such an increased risk of depression amongst construction workers.

In the latest report from the Lighthouse Construction Charity Club, it was stated that a total of £1.482M was spent on related charitable services. This is not surprising when we consider the fact that 1662 cases were presented to the charity’s free helpline in 2018 alone. This is extremely concerning for many reasons, especially considering that mental health related issues accounted for 32% of deaths in 2017. With the clearly overwhelming number of individuals in the Construction Industry suffering from life-altering mental health related issues, the need to address and tackle the issue is urgent.

Construction Causes Concerns Working within the Construction Industry is far from an easy task. The nature of the job means that workers are often working long hours away from home, and without the stability of knowing when their next job will arise. With the fate of the industry far from set in stone, the threat of loss of work and income will also be looming over the heads of construction workers. Carillon, formerly the second largest construction company in the UK, went into compulsory liquidation in January last year, with nearly £7 billion in liabilities. Evidently, fears of instability will be increasing within the industry.

Tackling the Issue Numerous charities and services are dedicated to tackling the issue of mental health within the industry. Mind Your Head is a ‘national campaign designed to promote mental wellbeing to men working in the Construction Industry in a straight-talking, no-nonsense and accessible way.’ The campaign was launched at UK Construction Week this year and aims to teach the importance of mental health in the industry. The expert consultant-led campaign pledges to give those affected by mental health issues a ‘familiar and relatable’ way to receive help. According to experts, the problem is related to a ‘machismo’ culture which breads a stigma around men needing support for their issues. In order to affectively tackle the issue, the industry must look to eliminate the damaging stigma around seeking advice and support. As reported by Mind Your Head, all areas of the construction industry must collaborate in order to create a real change.

Beyond the Industry Mental health in construction is rife for many reasons, one being that the field is male-dominated. However, mental →

According to the Mental Health Foundation, around 1 in 8 men in the UK have mental health problems but are reluctant to seek support. The societal expectations upon men include being expected to be ‘breadwinners’ and exhibit traits such as strength and stoicism. Worryingly, research suggests that the perceived need to comply with these social expectations is associated with poor mental health. According to Men’s Mental Health, men make up merely 36% of referrals to Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT). It is also reported that in 2017 alone, a devastating 5,821 suicides were recorded in Great

Britain, with 75% being men. Suicide is the largest cause of death for men under the age of 50, according to a 2017 report by Public Health England. With these statistics in mind, it is incredibly worrying to consider that male site workers are reportedly 3 times more likely to commit suicide than the typical UK male.

Advice for Employers Establishing a dialogue with your employees is crucial. Employers must ensure there is an easy way for employees to contact management regarding any concerns relating to their work. Additionally, it is important to make sure

that you are aware of support available through local and national services. This will act as your mental health safety net and enable you to offer better support to employees if necessary. It is also crucial that employers make themselves familiar with the signs and symptoms of poor mental health. Failing to do this may result in a disregard for workers’ mental health, thus potentially worsening the issue. It is not only important for employers to know symptoms, but also for employees. Strong colleague support and friendship can positively affect the welfare of the team. Those affected by depression and other

Signs to look out for include: • Lateness/Absence from work • Showing up to work but not being able to function adequately • Cognitively slowing down • Distraction • Isolation • Agitation and conflict • Attrition • Feeling overwhelmed • Decreased productivity in general Noticing these signs is extremely important as approaching a worker for support can reduce the chances of them suffering in silence. Companies also need to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and wellbeing issues. This can be done by changing attitudes through knowledge of the subject. Employees need to feel as though they have the resources and support available to look after their wellbeing in all senses. It is not enough to simply ‘tick the mental health box’. A scheme must be embedded into the culture of the company in order to truly help solve the issue. Being equipped to deal with this important issue is not only vital for the health of employees, but for the health of the company itself. According to the National Building Specification, mental health related concerns result in around 70 million sick-days per year. This overwhelming amount of time off is higher than the amount of time off due to any other health condition. It is obvious that the mind can be just as dangerous as any other factor on a construction site. Mental health affects

a shocking amount of people within the industry, and more time and energy needs to be spent on tackling the issue. With stress being placed on making sure companies comply with employee wellbeing requirements, the need to focus on mental health wellbeing is becoming increasingly acknowledged. However, it is exceptionally crucial to understand that this serious issue is not one that can be fixed by following simple guidelines and ‘ticking the mental health box’. It is a supportive lifestyle and a culture that needs to be lived by every day.

at uk construction week 2019 UK Construction Week 2019, which took place from 8th - 10th October, hosted the Mind Your Head Material Support gallery. The walk through exhibition featured a series of construction based artworks donated by companies aimed towards promoting mental wellbeing to men working in the Construction Industry. Mind Your Head is a national campaign devised by leading psychotherapist Dr. Gareth Palmer. The exhibition at UKCW acted as the launch of the campaign, with companies donating materials to be transformed into artworks. These companies included: VELUX as a main sponsor, TradePoint, Careys, Crittall, Kingspan, Ancon, Portakabin, George Barnsdale, Zest, QPSL, William Hare, BWF, Assent, Tremco, Gripsure, Timber Trade Federation, ICON, Concept Cubicles, AluK, Maber and RIBA.

Stand Out Moments from the Showman’s Show THE

annual Showman’s Show took place once again at its traditional home on the Newbury Showground in October, with some familiar names from the plant industry showcasing their machinery, equipment and services. For those unfamiliar with the Showman’s Show, it is an established exhibition for the outdoor events industry which takes place every year over two days in October. The first Showman’s Show was staged back in 1984, originally at the Newark Showground, moving around the

country until eventually ‘settling’ at the Newbury Showground, which has been its home for the last 20 years.

The Showman’s Show started with just 80 or so exhibitors and was held every two years but it wasn’t long before it gathered momentum, and demand led to it becoming an annual event from 1989 onwards.

Unsurprisingly, it has, over the years, also caught the imagination of those involved in the plant and equipment industry who have identified a niche for displaying their products to the events industry audience.

Today, the Showman’s Show regularly features in excess of 350 exhibitors and attracts some 4500 visitors over its two-day duration. It is certainly an event

The Showman’s Show • Event review One aspect that really stood out, were the many manufacturers displaying machinery and equipment with more eco-friendly credentials. Take BGG Ltd for example, who were displaying one of the first Stage V generators to be introduced into the UK. John F Hunt Ltd announced that they were the first National Power Hire Company to take delivery of a brand new Stage V Generator which is a 40kVA Bruno Fusteq unit. Electric powered machines are not only emission free but are much quieter in operation making them much more practical and appealing to the events industry. The Wacker Neuson D15E dumper exhibited at the Show, was a good example. It is ideal for working around events when noise levels could pose a problem. Morris Site Machinery had a range of eco lighting towers on display including the

SMC TL60 Solar Trolley which is 100 % solar powered with zero noise and zero emissions. Again, an ideal machine where noisy lighting towers are not needed. Another interesting machine was the Trilo S4 Vacuum Sweeper on the Lister Wilder stand which is multi-functional, either hand held or tractor driven. It can be used all year round for collecting leaves, litter, hedge clippings and grass cuttings. Just the job for preparing the ground for outdoor events.

An innovative, yet very novel idea which is obviously taking its lead from the shipping containers that are appearing around the country as either pop-up or permanent cafes and restaurants.

The 21st century has seen more modular construction methods come to the fore.

Lister Wilder were also displaying the recently launched Kubota RTV X1110 Rough Terrain vehicle along with a range of buggies, the latter widely used by the events industry.

So, if you are planning an outdoor event in the near future, the Showman’s Show is certainly worth adding to your diary for October 2020.
