CEA response to the Leeds HS2 leg to be scrapped THE
Construction Equipment Association CEO, Suneeta Johal respond to the announcement that the East Midlands-Leeds HS2 high-speed line would not be built. “The demise of Phase 2b, East Midlands-Leeds HS2 high-speed line, clouds the original vision of HS2 as a dynamic North/South link in line with the levelling up agenda. The concern is whether the government will row back on other infrastructure ‘commitments’. A solid project pipeline is the lifeblood of our sector.” - Suneeta Johal CEO CEA, (Construction Equipment Association) The High Speed 2 project (HS2) was intended to create highspeed rail links between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds however has since faced delays. It was announced today that the HS2 line between the East Midlands and Leeds is being scrapped, however the line from London to Birmingham and Manchester will still go ahead as planned. With its familiar steering wheel and lever layout consistent with the 120, 140 and 160K models, the efficient hydraulic system provides more precise and predictable control for a consistent grade. Its transmission with torque converter eliminates the need for an inching pedal, so only throttle and brake pedals are required to simplify operation. The drive system’s no-spin differential automatically unlocks in the turn to eliminate required input from the operator. The parking brake automatically engages when the machine is in neutral and the service brake is disengaged. factory tight to provide longterm precision grading, while the circle drive slip clutch option protects the drawbar, circle and moldboard from potential damage if the machine strikes an immovable object. Easy to maintain, the available Circle Saver option reduces daily greasing requirements and repairs to the circle and pinion. The grader’s new front axle design maximizes bearing life to minimize maintenance. A narrow machine width of 2.4 m (7.9 ft) plus cab choice of standard or low-profile to reduce overall transport height to 3.12 m (10.25 ft) improves machine transportability. For operating comfort, the cab offers an option between mechanical or air suspension seat, while the control console and steering wheel easily adjusts to the operator’s preference. Pressurized to prevent debris entry, the cab’s optional HVAC system circulates fresh air to keep the windows from fogging. A range of options are available to increase machine flexibility and meet specific customer
requirements. The optional Digital Blade Slope Meter shows the operator the grade without relying on manual grade checkers. Available all-wheel drive increases traction and efficiency, while the increased engine power that comes with the option improves performance on slopes and with poor underfoot conditions. The 120 GC offers 3.0 m, 3.7 m, and 4.3-m (10 ft, 12 ft, and 14-ft) moldboard options to meet a range of road coverage requirements, and a newly redesigned mid-mount scarifier improves visibility to the attachment while decreasing overall machine length. Improving machine performance, the 120 GC features a common front bolster for a choice of front lift group, counterweight, or front blade option, which aids in spreading more material faster. The rear of the machine accommodates a ripper or tow hitch option. More information about the new Cat 120 GC Motor Grader can be found by contacting the local Cat dealer or visiting: https://www. cat.com.

Powered by LPG, The KX019-4 SI HGL (LPG)’s Spark Ignition engine enables dramatically reduced emissions and toxicity in the familiar form factor while offering the same levels of performance and productivity
On site, LPG offers a number of advantages over traditional fuels. Refueling is simpler, faster, and unlike diesel fuel, the canisters cannot contaminate the work site through spillages. Kubota’s Spark Ignition engine no longer requires a diesel particulate filter, reducing the need for maintenance, and operates at lower noise levels, while providing the same levels of power as before. The KX0194 LPG’s all-day uptime, quieter operation and 2.5m dig depth ensure the new machine is among Kubota’s most versatile mini-excavators, capable of operating anywhere and at any time of day or night. The KC70H-4e offers the same performance and productivity improvements introduced with the KC70 in a fully electric, zero-emission solution. Mecalac’s innovative portfolio continues to expand MARK
Royse, Head
of Sales at Mecalac Construction Equipment UK Ltd, discusses the sector’s continued growth and explains how sustained investment into R&D - across the group - has seen Mecalac unveil a number of innovative additions to its globally acclaimed model range. Despite supply chain pressures, a global shortage of goods and the
ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, construction activity in the UK continues to increase. Indeed, the IHS Markit/CIPS UK Construction PMI® Total Activity Index posted 55.2 in August, remaining well above the 50.0 ‘no change’ threshold level. While growth has understandably slowed from its June peak (with activity recording its fastest pace in 24 years), strong market conditions and high demand have seen the
equipment sector evolve, adapt and develop. At Mecalac, our drive for continuous improvement has led to the development of a wide range of new models and innovative operator technologies. Rather than battening down the hatches over the past 18 months, we’ve invested heavily into R&D, listened to the changing requirements of the marketplace and expanded our class-leading portfolio →

Latest news → to ensure its suitability for the construction sites of tomorrow. While these innovations span our backhoe loader, pedestrian roller and excavator portfolios, it’s the additions to our site dumper range, manufactured at our production facility in Coventry, that have been most warmly received. From new operator-focused technologies, to new payload options, we’re committed to making the best even better.
3.5MDX Perfectly blending stylish design with ‘rental tough’ build quality, the all-new 3.5MDX cabbed site dumper features a powerful 1.8L engine (37kW, 150.5Nm) with exhaust aftertreatment to minimise
emissions. Available with either swivel tip skip (180° rotation) or front tip skip, the model’s articulated and oscillating chassis ensures excellent manoeuvrability and off-road capability. Its compact size and ample performance make it an effective solution for carrying high payloads – up to 3.5-tonnes – in confined spaces and for a large variety of applications. Its ROPS/FOPS certified cab is paired with Mecalac’s Shield safety pack for complete peaceof-mind.
6MDX/9MDX Hydrostatic Our popular 6MDX and 9MDX models have been updated, adding the option of hydrostatic transmission. With no gear shifting, responsive
dynamic braking and both smooth and predictable acceleration, they are more comfortable to use and safer around site – ideal for both experienced and new operators alike. Without the need for a gear lever, the cab is even more spacious, while fewer total parts means reduced maintenance and wear, lowering total cost of ownership. As the construction industry evolves to meet new and emerging challenges and levels of demand, the equipment industry is working hard to support it. At Mecalac, we believe that investing in innovation pays dividends for operators and owners. As such, we are determined to continue refining and improving our product portfolios: site dumpers, pedestrian rollers, excavators and backhoe loaders, surpassing the expectations of today and preparing construction professionals for the industry of tomorrow.

Doosan Delivers: New Doosan Wheel Loader at Cantera Ofitas de san Felices THE
San Felices quarry located in the municipality of Haro (La Rioja) in Spain has taken delivery of a new DL550-7 Stage V wheel loader, part of Doosan’s new award-winning ‘DL-7’ family of wheel loaders. The San Felices quarry is considered one of the leading quarries in Spain for the production of ofita. Ofita is a hard volcanic rock composed of feldspar, pyroxene and limestone, which is used for railway infrastructure works as well as in road buillding and other areas of construction and general industry. Located between vineyards and next to the Ebro river, the San Felices quarry has been active

since 1919, though the current operation was acquired in 1973. The quarry covers an area of 100 hectares, with roughly half of the space currently being developed. The Doosan DL550-7 loader joins a fleet of machines used to transport and load trucks with an average 250,000 tonne per year of railway ballast, sand and gravel. “For this we need reliable and robust machines. We cannot stop the work,” say Javier Fernández, director and Julián Pérez, in charge of the quarry.
Lower Fuel Consumption, Higher Productivity and Profitability They continued: “We needed
to replace an old loader with a current model. We were looking to reduce fuel consumption and increase productivity and profitability. For this we have opted for a more modern and larger machine. The size of the loader reduces loading times, which translates into faster tasks and higher performance. “The main mission of the Doosan loader is the loading of trucks and moving aggregates, basically for the expedition of materials. The DL550-7 model was selected taking into account several options, but what made us opt for it was its size, and its capabilities, that perfectly matched the requirements we were looking for. This included having similar characteristics to
Doosan Delivers • Topical Commentary the machine it replaced, which was also from Doosan, but being a new generation model it would provide us with greater benefits. While the impressive breakout force allows it to handle the toughest materials.” In the DL550-7, the powerful hydraulic system allows it to work quickly and efficiently. The Scania DC13 engine delivers optimal power while meeting Stage V environmental regulations. The combination of these features gives this Doosan wheel loader excellent balance, ensuring optimal bucket loading with every cycle. The lifting arm with Z-kinematics provides excellent breakout forces and lifting capacities, especially for heavy materials. The Doosan DL550-7 loader features smooth and responsive hydraulic and auxiliary connections. The machine is equipped as standard with a third spool with adjustable flow and hold function, which provides a constant flow for
the hydraulically actuated attachments.
Comfort, Ergonomic Controls, Much Smoother Handling Javier Fernández and Julián Pérez added: “We saw the evolution of the new loader, with respect to our previous models. The operators who use it are delighted with this new model, they have seen their comfort improved, the ergonomics of the controls, a much smoother handling thanks to the LIS system (load isolation system) and they value the precision and speed. The Doosan DL550-7 loader works at very high temperatures in summer and in winter, conditions can include extreme cold and fog, so the wellconditioned and heated cab protects the operator. “Another aspect to highlight is the greater visibility from the cab with the blind spots around it reduced to a minimum, with
the 360º vision camera, as well as the many other benefits that the new technologies provide us.”
Cutting Edge Technologies “We compare it to a mobile phone, you have to learn to use it to get all the performance out of it and this allows us to improve at an operational level.” The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick provides the operator with smoother and more precise control of the lift arm. Features available through the EMCV system include automatic return to dig, bucket tilt and dump and bucket pickup stop position and shock prevention for increased operator comfort. Designed for more precise control with less lever travel, resulting in less fatigue, the ergonomic joystick control sensitivity can be adjusted and changed according to operator preferences using the new →

They continued: “The relationship after so many years is very good, which implies total trust in the supplier, and proof of this is that we have been expanding, and over more than a decade we have always opted for the new Doosan models, both in loaders and excavators. The good service and response of the distributor have been fundamental to carry out all these operations.
“What we value most today is the reduction in fuel consumption as we have already mentioned, the easy handling thanks to the great sensitivity of movements, the comfort, safety, ergonomics, the incredible visibility and the great load capacity. We have gone down from three or four cycles to two cycles thanks to the loading power and the 6 m3 bucket.
“We started with the acquisition of a Doosan MEGA300 loader together with an excavator in 2010, when we had to do a major upgrade of 10 machines. After analyzing various offers we opted again for Doosan and Centrocar. The brand, the service obtained by Reyvena, and the durability of the
“We currently have a fleet of 10 Doosan machines including loaders and excavators from different eras and all of them, despite the years, extreme conditions and working hours are still active at the foot of the quarry. We have seen the evolution of many aspects of Doosan machinery and all of them have met our expectations.”

VOLVO CE TESTS WORLD’S FIRST HIGH-LIFT TELE-OPERATION OVER 5G Plant Planet learns about the trial of a remote-controlled Volvo L180 wheel loader over a 5G network.
VOLVO
Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is the first in the world to trial a remote-controlled Highlift wheel loader over a 5G network in a complex forestry application – in a bid to develop safer, more productive timber processes and explore its potential as an enabler for automation. The unique research project Remote Timber is a collaboration between Volvo CE and the telecom operator Telia, timber and paper manufacturer SCA, Mid University Sweden, Skogforsk and Biometria. →

company profile • Volvo CE → The tests at SCA’s timber terminal in Torsboda, Sweden, have demonstrated that it is possible to tele-operate a Volvo L180 High-lift wheel loader, hundreds of kilometers away. And by using a closed 5G network, low latency has proven to be a major advantage – allowing operators to perform the sensitive process of picking, loading and organizing logs remotely.
Tele-operated forestry is expected to deliver improved productivity. Tele-operated forestry is expected to deliver improved productivity by allowing one operator to work across multiple – and sometimes isolated – sites around the world. It is also expected to make it both safer, by removing humans from potentially hazardous environments, and more sustainable, through more efficient logistics flows as the loading and unloading of timber can also be done during the night. Christian Spjutare, Advanced Engineering Program Manager at Volvo CE, says: “We expect tele-operation to open up far greater opportunities for operators than is currently available. Sometimes it can be difficult to hire people in timber terminals because of their remote locations. But teleoperation allows people to work

A secure and robust digital infrastructure is crucial for this. The unique technical qualities that 5G offers are also entirely critical, in which extremely quick response times and high capacity enable immediate feedback between operator and machine, which is a prerequisite for being able to safely control machines remotely.”
it is vital that the lifting process is carried out with pinpoint accuracy and incredibly precise handling. Remote precision in its grasp An important aim of this research project is to explore exactly what is required from an operator perspective in making tele-operation a user-friendly and efficient experience. Because each load of timber can be so varied – from an unwieldly pile of heavy logs through to just a few short pieces of wood – it is vital that the lifting →

As a result, there are currently a number of connected cameras and sensors located at strategic points around the machine that transmit real-time data via the Telia 5G network back to the control station. The test will therefor both explore how to mature the technology and gather vital feedback from the operators on the optimum placement of those cameras for handling precision.
Volvo CE has for the past few years been exploring the potential for tele-operation across a variety of segments from mining to urban construction, with this project testing the technology in its most challenging application yet. By remote-controlling processes like timber lifting – which are currently too complex to be fully automated – tele-operation becomes an important enabler for automation, allowing for a more gradual integration of automated processes for

Insights from partial manual and tele-operated management enables us to also take steps towards automation in more complex processes”, Christian concludes. Remote Timber is financed by the participating parties and by VINNOVA’s vehicle strategic research and innovation (FFI) program.

DEFIBRILLATOR ON BOARD
Install defibrillators in Road Rail Vehicles A pioneering initiative has seen the installation of 10 x Defibrillators into a selection of the company’s Road Rail Vehicle (RRV) fleet and Welfare Units. The company recognises that working, in particular on the rail network, operatives, in many cases are working some distance from site access points. Should they fall ill with a heart condition that requires resuscitation, the chance of survival is greatly increased if a defibrillator can be quickly mobilised and utilised. Around 1.4 million people are alive today in the UK having survived a heart attack. The number of defibrillators has grown steadily, with the total number now in excess of 10,000. If a defibrillator is administered
within the first 3-5 minutes of an arrest, the likelihood of survival is as high as 74%. Total Rail Solutions CEO Paul Bateman said “This is an important issue for our people and the people working on the rail and infrastructure projects we work on. My father suffered a heart attack, thankfully a passing off-duty paramedic administered a defibrillator and saved his life. So I truly understand why this is the right thing to do for the business, our people and their families.” The TRS field teams will all receive training on the how to use the units, in addition when the units are opened clear, calm and concise commentary from the unit, talks the person who
is administering through the process. A short accompanying video to this piece can be viewed here, where Total Rail Solutions Head of Engineering Gareth Phillips demonstrates. https://youtu.be/ n561vzgIIg4 Paul concluded “The best return on investment is that we never have to use any of the units we have purchased. agtech: Protecting your intellectual property in the field EIP Patent Attorney Rick Gordon-Brown writes on the importance of machinery patents in a fast developing industry.
IT
is no secret that technological developments are pushing the advancement of new innovative products within the agricultural sector. Increased adoption of artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, satellite guidance, connected sensors and other emerging technologies is making agricultural machinery increasingly sophisticated, meaning manufacturers and end users can work more efficiently than ever before. Inevitably, this development will accelerate as more businesses begin to enter the space and bring new products
to market. Intellectual property will form an important part of the sector’s development and those developing the technology should look to protect their inventions early so they can maximise the benefits from their innovation. Conversely, manufacturers should check that they are free to implement an innovation without infringing another company’s patent rights.
Enhancements of agricultural machinery The enhancement of agricultural machinery has an especially large potential to revolutionise
the space. For instance, more precise GPS controls paired with computer vision and sensors could advance the deployment of smart and autonomous farm machinery. Farmers could operate a variety of equipment on their field simultaneously and without human intervention, freeing up time and other resources. Furthermore, autonomous machines are becoming increasingly efficient and precise compared to human-operated →

The wider rollout of 5G is also not far off, meaning agricultural machinery will be able to use the advanced network to carry out precision farming. Due to the massive amount of data that will become available, machines can be controlled centrally with data sent back to the operator in real-time, making precision farming far more viable. Furthermore, one of the technologies which is slowly migrating to the heavy equipment industry is the projection of information onto the windshield, also known as heads-up displays. In 2019 CASE’s ProjectTETRA concept won the Good Design Award for its product that displays machine information on displays of cabs and projecting it onto the windshield.
to gain permission to use others’ inventions, generating licensing income, encouraging investment, and even lowering your tax bill. That said, businesses face an inherent tension between wanting to get a product out to market quickly, before it loses its unique selling point, and going through what can be a time-consuming process of filing a patent application. Filing patent applications can be complicated and daunting, making it crucial that businesses are well informed on how to effectively approach the process from the start. Receiving advice from a patent attorney early in the process, and most importantly before any public disclosure of the invention, can play an important role in terms of helping prepare patent applications and ensure that crucial technical details of how the invention works and the scope of protection desired are adequately represented.
those entering the agricultural machinery market must protect their intellectual property Prepare to protect your innovations The long-term significance of protecting your innovations cannot be underestimated, as it protects a business’ assets that are integral to its overall long-term viability. Benefits of patents can include preventing others from using your invention, cross-licensing

AIDAN McGEARY Green Power Systems Ltd First up on the bill was Aidan McGeary, Managing Director at Green Power Systems Ltd. Aidan’s presentation focussed on the importance of providing businesses with the infrastructure to power electric machinery on site. Over the past few years, as noted by Aidan, manufacturers have been quick to release electric construction equipment. However, many sites lack the infrastructure to be able to utilise this machinery in every day practices. Green Power Systems works to develop flexible power

solutions to help build the required infrastructure. This infrastructure will, Aidan observed, be built up over the coming years using a blend of resources. These include: the existing electric grid, renewable energy sources and, certainly for the time being, diesel generators. The company has been undertaking on-site trials to ensure that the logistics of using equipment such as the ExElectric pro box unit to charge machinery can be managed. In France, a Pro Box unit has been used to power a Volvo excavator and Dumper on a site where no mains power was available. The 80kw inverter with 140kw batteries formed the sites own grid. Aiden commented that unit’s smart charging function allowed for the cheapest and greenest energy available to be used to power the equipment.
Aidan stressed that a change in the behaviour of the industry is key to the implementation of electric fleets on the majority of construction sites. Green Power Systems aim to aid all sizes of companies to find out how they can implement electric machinery on their own sites. IAN BARNES SITECH UK & Ireland
The second speaker of the event focused on the improvements that connected site technology can bring to the industry. Ian Barnes, Head of Business at SITECH UK & Ireland, has over 15 years of experience in the construction and heavy civils sectors. As noted by Ian, ‘a connected site’ is a wide ranging concept. The term can mean anything from machine control on site to full office and machine to machine connection. As one of Trimble’s leading dealers, SITECH UK & Ireland focus on providing solutions that allow sites to use construction technology to create an interconnected worksite. Trimble’s WorksManager is a software used to connect machinery on site to ensure that the most current and complete data is available using two way data

JOHN DAY Yanmar Industrial Engines
For the penultimate presentation, John Day, General Manager for Industrial Engines at Yanmar took us through the development of engines to comply with Stage V emissions standards. Yanmar’s range of Stage V compliant engines consists of two divisions: the L series air-cooled range, including the L48V, L70V and L100V; and the TNV series water-cooled range, which spans 8Kw – 155Kw of power. Yanmar first introduced aircooled engines in 1956 with the world’s smallest air-cooled diesel
engine. Since then, the aircooled range has gone through some notable developments. Now, the L series engine is popular on building sites and is used in machinery such as cement mixers, generators, and power packs. The range boasts some key features that set the engines apart from the market, including: • A Direct Injection System • Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (for the L48V model) • A counter balancer arrangement for smooth engine operation Yanmar’s Direct Injection technology has been in use since the 1980s. Jon revealed that Yanmar are one of the only companies to develop and produce fuel equipment in house. Further, the DOC is maintenance free and the counterbalance arrangement
reduces noise levels and vibrations to improve operator comfort. A number of well-known OEMs utilising Yanmar Stage V L-Series engines include Altrad Belle, Selwood, Winget, and Morris Site Machinery, among others. The TNV Stage V water-cooled series, which are popular for use in larger equipment and plant, boast similar key features. Currently, there are over 70,000 construction machines and over 80,000 agricultural and turf machines are on the market with a Yanmar TNV engine installed. Safety is an area that the CPA has long been involved in, with hundreds of guidance documents available on their website for free. These guidance documents, often published in association with other recognised trade associations, form just part of the picture of the CPA’s role in the industry. At the Efficient Future Conference, Kevin spoke of key new areas of operation that the CPA will be looking into in the future: Zero Carbon and Digitalisation.
66 • December 2021 • Plant Planet
A significant development being undertaken to ready the industry for a zero carbon future is the Construct Zero Initiative. The CPA are a fully recognised partner of Construct Zero and are fully engaged at senior discussion levels with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and other federations and will keep the sector and membership informed of new developments and requirements. In his presentation, Kevin noted that the switch from diesel to electric or even hydrogen solutions is still a way away for the industry. He added that an easier step to take within the construction in the shortterm is to transform operator behaviour. Eco operator schemes undertaken by members of the CPA, in which employees are incentivised to leave machinery idling less
often by competitions and cash prizes, have shown significant results already. The second area of operation Kevin discussed is digitalisation. This area, as Kevin observed, brings great benefits and efficiencies to the industry. The CPA are setting up new working groups to discuss how the industry can adopt new working practices to increase utilisation of digital technology within the industry. Anyone interested should keep an eye on the CPA website and social media for forthcoming updates. Kevin’s full presentation on the future of the construction plant industry can be found at https://www.plant-planet.co.uk/ conference

uk construction week 2021: Two years of construction innovation David Chuck takes a tour of the Plant Machinery on display at one of the UK’s largest construction industry events
UK
Construction Week 2021 was held at the NEC on the 5th -7th October 2021 and this year occupied just one hall – Hall 4 - instead of its many halls. UK Construction Week is one of the UK’s largest construction events and covers all facets of design, build and product innovation and helps to provide visitors with answers to what when, where and how we build our future. It also was the first signs of an entire business sector pivoting back to face to face networking and deal making.

It was also a big catch-up event covering two years of construction innovation, policy advances and new product development and attracted around 20,000 visitors.
reducing the risk of incidents and injuries to digging teams as well as providing the opportunity for fewer operatives on site who can then maintain safer distances whilst working.
For any employer looking for potential apprentices and recruiting new talent into their business the team from the recently launched Talentview Construction scheme were on hand.
One of the big problems for plant manufacturers and distributors this year is the lack of spare machines for exhibition and display purposes, another reason the plant section was smaller this year.
The construction plant section was a little smaller this year, however, one of the biggest items of plant on display was the suction excavator on the Hercules Site Services stand. Suction excavation is safer by
J Mac Ltd, who are based in Solihull, not far from the NEC, had some of their excavator range on display including the JME25Z which is a 2.5 Tonne zero tail-swing machine powered by a Yanmar engine.

A Beacon in the dark: The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity Akvile Peckyte unpacks the importance of the work undertaken by a vital industy charity.
AS
the days grow darker and shorter, The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity continues to shine a light on one of the most important issues facing construction industry workers - looking after one’s mental health. For many, this time of the year is a difficult one, as seasonal depression becomes more common and the effects of the pandemic continue to take effect. In this article,
Plant Planet will be looking back on the achievements of Lighthouse over the span of this year, highlighting the work of those who support this charity, and detailing how you can partake in the action.
Fundraising and support Getting involved to raise money and show support can come in many
different forms. Throughout the year, individuals raised money by participating in marathons, charity hikes and sporting events on behalf of the charity. Letting friends and colleagues know they should not suffer alone can be key to making those who are struggling feel like they can open up. people to severe mental and financial distress. The charity runs regular masterclasses on wellbeing specifically tailored for the construction industry worker. Discussing topics such as money and stress management, as well as coping with the effects of the pandemic, they create an open environment to have important conversations. For many in the industry, work schedules can often be sporadic, especially given Covid-19 constraints. This can culminate not only in an irregular income, but also disrupted sleeping patterns. Lighthouse has recently partnered with Nudge, bringing the ‘number one global financial wellbeing platform’ to their Helpline App, helping to coach individuals to understand and manage their money. The charity’s app has also recently integrated Sleepstation, an NHS-approved service for people with insomnia and poor sleep health. Enabling different forms of wellbeing is a key part of Lighthouse’s approach to improve the lives of construction industry workers, assisting them in developing their self-help skills and building their resilience.
Mental health issues do not exist in isolation - often they are a consequence of other stressors Over this year, The Lighthouse Golf Club has hosted multiple golf days, which have been a fantastic way to fundraise and raise the profile of the charity. Companies in the industry have been showing their support by electing Lighthouse as their charity partner, as well as sponsoring the Golf Club’s events. The Golf Club have recently introduced their corporate membership scheme, which allows companies to participate in golf days whilst raising money for the charity.
Building resilience Mental health issues do not exist in isolation - often, they are a consequence of other stressors and uncertainties. Furthermore, every year, the industry faces over 2,000 major incidents which result in injuries preventing people from working again, often leading

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity has recently published its 2020 Impact Report - over the previous year, the charity was able to provide a lifeline to 2,264 families in crisis and delivered £1,287m of charitable giving. The report also found that for every £1 of charitable spend, Lighthouse created social value which equates to £7.48. So far in 2021, The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity has helped 2,139 families in crisis, raised £355,512 in charitable giving and support, as well as £371,112 in supporting building mental health with wellbeing training and innovation. Plant Planet want to thank the charity for their work, and we look forward to seeing what 2022 brings for them - we are certain that they will continue changing the industry for the better. POWERFUL, EFFICIENT AND NOTICEABLY MORE FUEL EFFICIENT THAN THE COMPETITION”

Three new L 586 XPower® units have recently been put into operation at BTB Group Berlin’s 25-hectare recycling facility. A multitude of recycling plants – approved in accordance with the German Emission Control Act (BImSchG) – operate at the complex, and a total of up to one million tonnes of mineral and non-mineral construction waste is processed, handled, and reused annually. The new Liebherr wheel loaders feed crushers and screeners with construction waste and load lorries with processed material. The L 586 XPower®, Liebherr’s largest wheel loader, only requires two to three cycles to load a lorry.
This ensures quick and resource-efficient handling of material. “Powerful, efficient and noticeably more fuel-efficient than the competition: these were the reasons behind our purchasing decision,” reveals BTB Group Berlin company owner Philip Breul. The powersplit drive concept of the XPower® wheel loaders is what enables this. XPower® provides a combination of hydrostatic and mechanical drives. The interaction between the two adapts automatically and continuously to the respective application. This, together with Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), ensures a fuel reduction of up to 30% compared with other wheel loaders in this size class. →

→ Having a fleet painted in the company’s own design is not only good marketing, but also a source of pride for many organizations. For this reason, the BTB Group ordered the three new L 586 XPower® units from Liebherr in its company colours. The specialists at Liebherr’s Bischofshofen plant implement special paintwork directly in the production process. This means that the individual components are painted before assembly and then incorporated into the regular production process. This procedure saves subsequent painting and manual reworking. Liebherr thus achieves a higher degree of quality with custom paintworks. BTB Group is forward-looking in the field of recycling and uses innovative concepts to produce new building materials from what was once useless construction waste, all of which is aided by numerous construction machines from Liebherr.

THE FOREFRONT OF SUSTAINABLE AGGREGATE PRODUCTION – IN THE MIDDLE OF THE UK’S CAPITAL CITY.

London is home more than one million private business enterprises. These range from one-man, artisan coffee shops to huge multibillion pound conglomerate corporations. It is easy to perceive London as a shiny-suited, ‘white-collar’ workforce, but there are plenty of hard grafting, ‘blue-collar’ businesses in the mix, many of which are, quite literally, building the future city. As we all know, where there is construction, there is waste, and where there is muck, there is money. H Sivyer Transport Limited is one of London’s oldest businesses, established in 1862, and today lays claim to the capital’s largest muck-away company. Where ‘Sivyers’ once used horses and carts to move construction waste around Victorian London, it now employes more than 200 people with 130 tipper grab
