LIVE LOAD DIAGRAM PERFORMANCE CABIN IN GREAT CHALLENGES, GREAT DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE RTH 6.31
magnith.com
From the most compact model in the TH range to a new RTH with elevating cabin, Magni aims to set new standards for performance, safety and versatility. We preview details of the TH 3.6 and RTH 6.31 EC ahead of the official launch.
Magni TH boasts a large offering of more than 30 telehandlers and holds two world records: the highest load capacity with the 13 tonnes (28660 pounds) of the RTH 13.26 and the greatest lifting height with the 51 metres (167 feet) of the RTH 6.51.
In spite of these major achievements, the Italian brand has introduced an array of novelties at the start of 2024, with a whole series planned during the course of the year.
In the first two months of 2024, Magni has launched new models, such as the TH 7.10, the RTH 8.39 and the new version of the RTH 5.18, with characteristics upgraded from their predecessors, especially in terms of performance. From 24 to 27 April, Magni will be launching the new TH 3.6 and RTH 6.31 EC, for which we have received a few preview nuggets.
Becoming the most compact machine in its range, the TH 3.6 meets the need for mobility and versatility in tight spaces, with low-level design, an astonishing capacity of 3 tonnes (6613 pounds) and a maximum height of 5.9 metres (19 feet). Equipped with Stage IIIA or Stage V engine, electronic hydrostatic transmission and fourwheel drive and steering, it can deliver excellent performance on even the harshest terrains.
The cab offers total visibility, superior protection with ROPS/FOPS Level 2 certification and a safe, ergonomic environment. Unlike competitor models on the market, which have the usual load cell systems, the TH 3.6 will be equipped with a more sophisticated, precise tipping protection mechanism, to maximise performance and safety. This is the “Load Moment Indicator” (LMI), available on the entire Magni telehandler range, which enables constant monitoring of the machine’s movements to prevent any kind of overload.
With this new product, designed for the construction and logistics sectors, Magni TH applies its expertise to a previously unexplored segment, without sacrificing the key principles underlying its telehandlers’ success.
At the same time, the RTH 6.31 EC represents another technological step forward for the roto market. In fact, also available as an evolution of the RTH 6.22, RTH 6.26 and RTH 8.27 versions, this model will be equipped with cab which lifts up to 1.5 metres (5 feet) and tilts from 0° to 15°. This new feature aims to further improve visibility and safety in all contexts requiring extremely high precision and monitoring of the load, such as all jobs using the tree-cutting attachment.
Magni has always aimed to set new standards in efficiency, safety and versatility, highlighting its commitment to targeted innovation serving every specific need.
So Magni is confident that the new products to be launched at Intermat 2024 will attract the attention of a more and more demanding audience.

GENERATION ZERO AND PLANT GOING GREEN
At Merlo, green is more than just a colour. Merlo Group have fully embraced the renewables drive. This began with the introduction of Generation Zero, an emission free range from Merlo. A commitment from this family-owned company to establish a cleaner, greener and sustainable future for its products..
The Merlo eWorker - Launched at the end of 2021 the 100% electric telescopic handler was designed from scratch re-writing the rule book, by offering an un-rivalled 8-hour work cycle from a single charge in a telescopic handler. Unlike previous attempts from other manufacturers, which fell short, the eWorker allows for an uninterrupted working day.
The fully recyclable heavy duty lead acid battery allows for safe, environmentally sound, and effective recycling at the end of the battery’s life. This makes the eWorker a truly sustainable offering.
Merlo ROTO Plug & Play Hybrid –Demonstrating some out of the box thinking by offering a plug-in solution for the company’s market leading range of rotating handlers is the ROTO Plug & Play Hybrid option.
Offering up to 70 l/min of hydraulic flow the Plug & Play system can offer diesel power equivalent outputs and work cycles, but without the emissions or noise of a diesel engine.
Merlo eCINGO - The compact and agile CINGO tracked carrier range from Merlo have found favour with many sectors across the UK.
Until now the motive power for the CINGO range has been sourced from either petrol or diesel engines. However, in 2023 the all-new, fully electric Merlo eCINGO was launched, adding to the Merlo Generation Zero family. This emission free and silent model packs a punch with its hydrostatic direct drive track motors ensuring it can power through the toughest of work sites whatever the weather. Servo-assisted controls allow for fingertip precision of travel and hydraulic functions.
Following this commitment, before the end of 2023 Merlo invested further in sustainability and fully upgraded its UK headquarters to run purely on solar energy, with over 100 solar panels installed, cutting its CO2 emissions by 7 tonnes per annum.
Excess energy from the panels is diverted to power 6 electric car chargers for both clients and employees to use, reinforcing the drive for both Merlo staff, and its clients to embrace going green.
Lastly, any power still left is fed back to the grid, letting Merlo contribute to the renewable energy going into the grid. This solidifies Merlo as a sustainable company, both in development, practice and production.

MACHINE TECHNOLOGY ENSURES BALMORAL MAZE IS FIT FOR A KING
Construction technology specialist SITECH®UK and Ireland, is playing a supporting role in the creation of the giant thistle-shaped maze at Balmoral which is due to open to the public later this year.
Civil engineering company Nicol of Skene in Aberdeenshire called in machine technology experts, SITECH in their capacity as UK authorised dealer for Trimble® machine control systems to work on this prestigious project.
The specialist team from SITECH installed the Trimble Earthworks grade control platform to the six-ton excavator being used to create the paths and planting areas for the maze. The team trained operator, Liam McAllan, who was then able to achieve the near zero tolerances needed to create the 1.2-metre-wide curving paths and 0.8-metre-wide beds which will become the 6ft high walls of the maze once fully grown.
Liam says: “I’d not worked on a maze before or used Trimble Earthworks, but
the system was easy to learn and pick up which was important, as working in such a small area meant there was no room for error.
“It was challenging because I could only see what we were doing at ground level, so we had a drone fly over to check all the lines were precise and everything was symmetrical.
“The GPS system made things quicker and go smoothly. Without GPS we would have needed an engineer on site throughout the entire project to ensure everything was accurate and precise.”
The team at Nicol of Skene used Trimble Business Centre to convert the original architect drawings into a 3D model which was then uploaded to the working machine, then measured and calibrated from two positions by the expert team at SITECH to complete the shapes needed for the design without any errors.
SITECH regional sales consultant for Scotland, Liam Payne, said while they had collaborated with Nicol of Skene before, employing the technology to
create a maze for the King was a truly unique and a clear demonstration of the accuracy of Trimble machine technology.
“This really shows how site positioning systems can do so much more than dig holes,” he said.
“Using Trimble® Earthworks machine technology for this project saved Nicol of Skene considerable engineer man hours and gave them complete peace of mind that they could deliver exactly what was wanted by the King.”
As a result, the maze groundworks were successfully completed within 12 weeks and the maze is set to open to the public this year and attract even more visitors to the Balmoral Castle and 50,000-acre estate.

WHAT PPE ISSUES DO WOMEN FACE IN CONSTRUCTION?
HARNESSES.COM is proud to be a part of the campaign ‘PPE that Fits’, and working with our leading partners as an integral part of our supply chain we are in a position to really make a real difference in the real world! Our sister company is a leading fall protection specialist of 25 years, where we have been designing, installing, and testing fall protection systems for people who work at height and you can find a wealth of information at our platform FALLARREST.COM.
In an ever-changing world of equality and opportunity, more and more women are entering the field of construction, engineering, and what has traditionally been a male-dominated environment, and unfortunately, many women in construction face significant challenges when it comes to personal protective equipment (PPE).
Here are some of the key issues that they are faced with Ill-fitting PPE: Most PPE is designed for a generic “male” body type, leaving women with ill-fitting gear that’s too big, too small, or poorly designed for their curves. This can be uncomfortable, restrict movement, and create safety hazards such as:
• Trip hazards: Oversized clothing can cause trips and falls.
• Pinch points: Loose straps or clothing can get caught in machinery.
• Exposure to hazards: Gaps in clothing or ill-fitting respirators can leave women exposed to dust, chemicals, or other contaminants.
The lack of availability: Even when women’s PPE exists, it may not be readily available and currently there is only a handful of manufacturers and suppliers who are trying to bring about change, which can lead to delays or force women to use ill-fitting equipment, which places them in danger.
Cost: Presently women’s PPE is often more expensive than men’s, which creates an additional financial burden for women entering the industry.
Cultural factors: Some women may hesitate to speak up about ill-fitting PPE due to a fear of appearing difficult or not fitting in with the male-dominated culture. Some employers may not be aware of the specific needs of women in construction or may not prioritise providing the correct personal protective equipment that is required for the tasks in hand.
The Consequences
Increased risk of injury: Ill-fitting PPE can put women at increased risk of injury.
Discomfort and reduced productivity: Uncomfortable PPE can make it difficult to work effectively and safely.
Discouragement and retention issues: These challenges can contribute to a culture that discourages women from entering and staying in the construction industry.
Positive Developments
Awareness of these issues is growing, and there is a push for improved standards and wider availability of women’s PPE. Some organisations are developing educational resources and best practices for employers on providing proper PPE for women, whilst some manufacturers are starting to offer more options for women’s PPE.
Moving forward
Employers need to: Conduct proper risk assessments to identify the specific needs of women workers, provide a variety of PPE sizes and styles to accommodate different body types, ensure PPE is properly inspected and maintained, and create a culture where women feel comfortable speaking up about PPE concerns.
Manufacturers need to: Design and produce more PPE options specifically for women and make women’s PPE readily available and affordable.
Women in construction can: Advocate for themselves and their colleagues by speaking up about PPE concerns, get involved in organizations that are working to improve PPE for women, and by working together, we can create a construction industry where all workers, regardless of gender, have access to safe and effective PPE.
Harnesses.com is a family-owned platform, which means that we dictate our prices, and as this is not our main line of business, that being fall protection and working at height solutions, this enables us to price point how we wish to sell!
So, we aim to make personal protective equipment more freely available, and we will be doing this by setting our sale costs at affordable rates. This means that you will be able to source the same highquality PPE that is listed on other sites for 25-50% cheaper!
No gimmicks. No tricks. No hidden agenda.
Simply the best prices for the best equipment! We are setting ourselves as a premium platform, with premium, highend, highly innovative, and engineered personal protective equipment but not at high-end prices that others sell for. This is because we want to make a difference! We are going to take the PPE world by storm, so watch out because we are about to become a major force!

WANT TO BUY OR SELL A HIRE BUSINESS? THE HIRE EXCHANGE CAN HELP.
In the 4 years since launch in 2020, The Hire Exchange - the only specialist business sales advisory for the Tools, Plant and Equipment hire sector - has brokered some 17 successful transactions with 3 due to complete in May 24 and 9 more in process.
They are also provider of the HAE Business sales advisory service, and are now busy building relationships with The CPA and MPBA.
The Hire Exchange co-founders David Graham and Chris Harvey give the low down about the business and the issues faced by buyers and sellers.
How did The Hire Exchange start?
After 30-years’ in the hire industry first with the SGB Group and latterly as MD of Speedy Hire Plc, David understood how difficult the acquisition process can be for sellers but also buyers.
“Most owners of independent hire companies are great at running their own business but when it comes to presenting the business case for selling it, finding the right buyer and selling at the right price they struggle,” he explained.
Co-founder Chris Harvey, a brand and marketing specialist who had worked with David for many years in the hire sector was engaged to conduct research to confirm his theory.
“The research resoundingly confirmed that sellers needed help to understand
the sale process, support in preparing and presenting the information buyers need to assess the business and crucially its value and finally, identify the most appropriate buyers,” said Chris.
It’s a win-win situation. On that simple premise, The Hire Exchange was born.
‘Strategic Fit’ is the key to selling your business, can Eco products help? The best deal is where the buyer is attracted to an acquisition because there are clear and deliverable opportunities to grow or develop the business, so where 1+1 = 3.
This can be derived from a number of areas. Regional expansion and size are important to add critical mass and operational footprint. Product range, client base and service style are also important, as are cross sale opportunities and alignment in ‘company culture’.
An example of this alignment can be engagement in the Eco / environmental space. All organisations are aware of the need to reduce their carbon footprint and increase energy management efficiency to lower their energy cost.
Green credentials can be a compelling and potentially a differentiating attribute in a market that is accelerating towards the goal of net zero.
The short-term issue with Green/Eco in the Plant sector is often the premium cost of green kit and the reluctance of customers to accept increased hire
rates. So, whilst desirable and worthy the pace of the transition to support the green agenda lies in part in the hands of the equipment manufacturers and the support, beyond just selling kit, that they bring to the party.
The obvious exception to this is where real and significant fuel efficiency and cost savings can be demonstrated to justify a hire rate increase.
Solar and generator technology with built in telemetry gives customers the visibility in real time of the savings and is therefore clear evidence of its value.
The other concern we hear about relates to the speed of emerging technologies that can quickly turn todays new innovation/ investment into yesterday’s technology.
In spite of this, in the end the overarching pressures around global warming public opinion, and Government intervention will all drive the green agenda and the hire industry will have a large part to play.

CAN YOUR MACHINES’ HYDRAULIC OIL LIFE TRULY BE EXTENDED? THEN THE REAL QUESTION WOULD NEED TO BE; WHEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE HYDRAULIC OIL?
With no universal prescription for how often hydraulic oil should be changed, equipment manufacturers typically provide guidelines to every 1000 hours. Adhering to these recommendations is not only crucial for maintaining warranty but ensures optimal system performance.
Determining Oil Change Frequencies
Generally, a manufacturer’s warranty will state 1000hrs, then once out of warranty and into general use; most operators choose 2000-3000hrs (once yearly) based on several factors. Plus, on occasion where there is need to change oil sooner for reasons other than maintenance.
Oil Condition: Monitor the condition of the hydraulic oil; signs that it may need changing include:
• Colour Change: If the oil becomes significantly darker or cloudy.
• Viscosity Change: When the oil’s viscosity deviates from the specified range.
• Contaminants: Presence of dirt, debris, or water in the oil.
• Odor: Unusual or foul smell.
• Sludge Formation: Accumulation of sludge or varnish.
Operating Environment
• Extreme Conditions: If the hydraulic system operates in extreme temperatures (hot or cold), consider more frequent oil changes.
• Heavy Loads: Frequent heavy-duty operations may require more frequent oil changes.
Specific Situations
• New Equipment: Change the oil after purchasing new machinery.
• After Repairs: Following major repairs or component replacements.
• Long Inactivity: If the system has been idle for an extended period.
• Contamination Events: After contamination incidents (e.g., water ingress).
Routine assessments of the hydraulic oil’s condition are essential. Visual cues can provide early indicators of potential issues. Implementing a routine oil analysis program is a proactive approach to accurately assess the condition of hydraulic oil.
Regular maintenance schedules ensure optimal performance & prevent premature wear
Hydraulics must be clean to operate properly and efficiently. So how clean is clean enough? Well Cleaner is always better.
Fine Filtration can extend hydraulic oil life by as much as 5 times Filtration plays a crucial role in maintaining hydraulic oil integrity. Investing in and regularly servicing effective filtration systems can significantly reduce the chances of contamination and extend the life of the hydraulic fluid considerably.
KLEENOIL Filtration not only removes particulate matter and water, but also prevents the formation of sludge and varnish, which can compromise system efficiency and lead to component failure.
KLEENOIL is a Cellulose depth filtration and as a natural fibre has a random pore size – being so compacted – its density takes out particulate to a level of 3 micron and as a cellulose – absorbs all moisture in the same application… therefore, is rated at 3 microns absolute with a 99.6% efficiency.
The cellulose depth removes contaminant and moisture in one simple application: to achieve this it requires a slow, steady flow to ensure full adsorption/ absorption through the media. So, the system is always installed as a ‘by-pass’ or ‘kidney loop’: taking a small feed from the circuit, cleaning it thoroughly and returning to tank as cleaner than new. With this technique it continues to remain one of the finest in oil filtration.
KLEENOIL Systems can be installed permanently ‘onboard’ for continuous cleansing, or as a mobile filtration cart to address issues around site.
Constantly maintaining hydraulic oil to ‘as clean as new’ not only extends oil, but also component life through less wear from abrasion.

UPGRADING MACHINERY TO STAGE V WITH RETROFITTING
What is Stage V and why do we need it?
Stage V is the fifth stage of emissions standards for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). It establishes emission standards for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, as well as particle number emissions from diesel engines. The aim is to limit the harmful pollutants emitted by the machines, thereby reducing the air pollution, protecting people’s health and the environment.
Stage V is already a requirement at many large construction sites across the UK.
What role does SCR play in achieving Stage V compliance?
SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology plays a pivotal role in achieving Stage V compliance by effectively reducing NOx emissions. When combined with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the system also reduces particulate emissions. Proventia NOxBUSTER® exhaust aftertreatment system, designed for retrofit, combines these two technologies, enabling emission upgrades up to Stage V compliance, while also fulfilling carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission limits.
How does an SCR system function?
In short, SCR system uses ammonia, typically in the form of urea-water solution (DEF/Adblue®), as a reducing agent for catalytic reactions. Ammonia is injected into the exhaust gas stream, where it reacts with nitrogen oxides (NOx), converting them into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water vapor (H2O).
Do DPFs require regular cleaning?
Yes, regular maintenance is essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of DPFs. DPF captures and stores exhaust soot, and over time, as the soot is burned off during regeneration, ash accumulates in the DPF, and it needs to be cleaned. Maintenance schedule depends on engine condition, workload, and usage. Proventia offers a back pressure monitoring system for schedule calculation.
Specialized service providers, such as Proventia’s long-term UK partner, Excalibre Technologies, offers DPF cleaning services for all vehicle and engine types.
Retrofits vs. new machinery?
Retrofitting a machine with an exhaust aftertreatment system offers significantly lower costs than purchasing a new one, making it an advantageous choice for those aiming to maximize their return on investment. Moreover, retaining the original asset has positive environmental impacts, as it eliminates the need to manufacture an entire new vehicle.
Additionally, retrofitting notably extends the lifespan of existing equipment. A retrofit system makes the machine as clean as a new low-emission model, providing the possibility to meet Stage V emission levels for years to come. Proventia retrofit systems are based on proven, reliable technology and use the same innovations and technologies that are supplied to leading OEM engine and machine manufacturers.

ELTs REPRESENT A MAJOR CHALLENGE TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Envirotyre UK Ltd are tyre and track disposal specialists located near Boston, Lincolnshire. The company has been trading for 22 years from their purpose-built site which is ideally located next to the A17.
The company has a full Environment Agency Permit, as well as a Waste Carrier/Broker Licence and provides a first-class collection and environmental service to customers throughout the UK. They collect tyres ranging from bicycle, car, van, 4x4, truck, tractor to crane and earthmover together with plant and agri tracks. They can also collect other types of rubber such as matting and conveyor belting.
Every year the UK produces around 50 million scrap tyres. Also known as end-of-life tyres (ELTs) they represent a
major challenge to the circular economy where waste is converted into a resource. Scrap tyres are recycled in two different ways: reuse and reprocessing. Envirotyre specialises in reuse. A waste tyre can be reused in two ways, as an alternative fuel or a construction material. Nearly 40,000 tyres per day are used as alternative fuel, the heat produced by burning one tyre being the equivalent of burning over 7 litres of oil. With a calorific value equivalent to that of good quality coal, end of life tyres are used as an alternative to fossil fuels, with the advantage of lower emissions. Envirotyre collects and processes end of life tyres and tracks for reuse as a construction material, or export for use as a fossil fuel alternative. Envirotyre are members of the TRA. A cornerstone of that organisation is its support for the Tyre Industry Federation’s
Responsible Recycler Scheme. All TRA members are fully accredited by the scheme, which guarantees that all tyres collected, recycled, or reprocessed by them are disposed of or reused in an environmentally friendly manner or best practice methods.
This accreditation gives peace of mind that you are dealing with an industry leader, and that your obligation to dispose of waste tyres in the correct, legal manner will be met in full.

We’re proud to have an in-house team of social impact experts dedicated to making positive social impact. Our team focuses on three key areas: environmental community projects, skills, education and employment and social equality.
BIM Technology
We continue to work on our technological advancements to support our customers with smarter and more sustainable working. Two new advancements are our BIM technology and new Sunbelt Rentals AR app.
Through our BIM technology, our customers and the public can significantly decrease their carbon footprint. By using the virtual models of their sites, they’re able to showcase their equipment onsite to make more sustainable choices about the most energy-efficient layout and identify areas where low carbon, zero-carbon and new green technology can be deployed before the project begins.
Our new Sunbelt Rentals AR app is designed to change the way businesses visualise their sites. Not only does it offer a unique opportunity to visualise a site, it also empowers them to make the move towards sustainable decisions. The AR app uses 3D models of equipment and places them into the real world, allowing for smarter and more efficient decision making and planning capabilities to ultimately reduce transport costs and better asset management.
With the additional benefit of interactive features, users can easily navigate the virtual walk around feature and access detailed information about equipment. This app is a valuable tool for all businesses as they look to make the switch to sustainable solutions.
Command Centre
A growing trend across the construction sector is the request for telematics and connectivity features integrated into equipment. Through our command centre, our customers can remotely monitor, collect data, and perform predictive maintenance on their equipment. The telematics data and portal display key information on equipment with low fuel levels, battery life, and safety features, allowing for efficient scheduling of charging and refilling times in a safe manner. With this technology and data available at their fingertips, they can remotely access and download data throughout their projects, gaining insight into equipment performance, emission levels, and equipment optimisation.

Electric Advancements in Telehandlers
We’re constantly looking for advancements in technology that benefit our customers and the climate. Currently, we have two different types of 6m telehandlers, JCB and Faresin models, with a total of 18 electric telehandlers available to hire.
Our customers can expect the same capabilities from electric telehandlers as their diesel counterparts. They offer a comparable performance and play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a more sustainable future for our planet. Many of the models feature regenerative braking, effectively capturing and storing energy for more efficient power usage. To further decrease reliance on the electrical grid, select electric telehandlers are fitted with solar panels on their roofs, harnessing renewable energy.
Energy Management Units
Another step towards a more environmentally friendly construction industry is the introduction and implementation of energy storage systems (batteries and flywheels). These systems are crucial in maximising energy efficiency and utilisation on sites as they act as a tool to capture excess energy during peak periods and store it for future use when required. This approach effectively optimises energy consumption for customers by taking advantage of the fluctuations in energy levels and avoiding waste by discharging it back to site when needed.
It is especially beneficial for larger construction sites and projects with multiple pieces of equipment, as it allows for better management of energy consumption and minimises idling time on combustion engines.

Case Study: How Did a Greener Solution
Save Over £20k and 33 Tons of CO2?
We’re bringing to life our green solutions by working with our customers on new and innovative approaches to sustainability.
Our Clean Energy team worked with Marmalade films Ltd to create an innovative energy solution for a major film production in Greater London. By carefully analysing the peak production demands and available power supply, they designed and implemented a ‘power at mains parallel system’ using mains power and battery storage units. Not only was this solution a worldfirst, it reduced the need for back-up generators, resulting in savings of over 100,000 litres of fuel and 33 tons of CO2
Customer Name: Marmalade films Ltd
Project and Location: An innovative energy solution on a major film production in Greater London.
Sector: Clean Energy
Products (Inc Quantity): 2x 318kVA-422 KWH Battery (Energy) Storage Units (BSUs) and 1x 300kVA generator (for back-up power only)
The Challenge: To ensure a seamless production; a combination of studio and location filming is often necessary with backup power being crucial. However, even with access to a mains connection, there may not always be enough power to sustain all facilities and equipment during peak times. This is why an additional energy source is often required.
Recently, Sky’s flagship studios in North London undertook a new project that demanded a higher power supply than the 63-amp 3 phase mains available to support the filming of a new blockbuster movie.
The Solution: Traditionally, the studio would have required additional traditional generators to handle periods of higher energy demand. However, with the support of our Clean Energy team, a hybrid power system was introduced. This innovative approach uses two large batteries to support the mains power source, with one generator supplied as back up.
How does it work: The two battery storage units (in mains parallel mode) provide primary power to the location, and are configured to work in unison with the mains supply to power:
4 workshops
16 cabins
1x Craft services
2x Spray booths
Tech vehicle support (Tech Line; DIT, SFX, Props & Lighting)
And EV charging facilities
The battery technology requires charging, which is why the team set them up on a ‘trickle charge’ overnight and when the load is low, using the mains supply. This unique system, known as a ‘power at mains parallel load’, is believed to be the first of its kind to be used in the UK.
During working hours, the batteries will use their stored power and automatically respond to varying spikes in energy demands, ensuring a continuous and uninterrupted supply.
The Result: The results of the power at mains parallel system have been very positive. After six months of filming, the data showed that the batteries successfully provided power to site 99% of the time, with the generator only being used for a total of four hours during the entire time frame. In comparison with a traditional generator power solution set up, this system has resulted in significant savings:
Total Litres of Fuel Saved 104,756 li
Total Fuel Cost Saved £220,000 (based on HVO @£2.10p/l)
Total CO2 Saved 33.7 Tonnes
Total Energy Consumed 90,000 kwh
Overall Commercial Saving £20,800
Based on clean energy solution VS generator only solution powered by HVO
These savings achieved are in comparison to a typical 25% generator idle load which is typically expected in this type of application. As a result, the production has saved an estimated 7,259hrs (99.98%) in generator run time.

Life With Lana // Ready to Launch
Editor, Rebecca Phillips, travels to the wilds of North Wales to meet the incredible inspiration behind Plant Planet’s amazing new segment.
When you think of an influencer, what do you picture?
Is it perhaps a pretty brunette fashion icon sipping an ice coffee? Maybe it’s an overly muscled gym goer doing far too many sweaty pullups for us mere mortals to even comprehend.
Whatever the case, I don’t think any of us automatically jump to someone who spends their life climbing in and out of excavators and shifting 2000 tonnes of dirt in a day. And honestly, that’s incredibly shortsighted of us all!
Well not to worry folks, because Plant Planet is proud to say we are launching another fantastic new feature, and this time, the focus is all on one astounding lady…
40 april 2024 PLANT PLANET feature life with lana
Now, let it be understood, Lana does not consider herself an influencer. And despite having a huge online presence, that is the last thing she would want to be known as. ‘I’m just me,’ Lana tells me as she braces the windy weather for her well-deserved lunch break. ‘I want to teach people; I’m happy to inspire if that’s what people take from it, but I’m not an influencer.’
Being on site with Lana and seeing her work, I can totally see where she is coming from. The word influencer comes with certain connotations attached, and many of them can seem quite vacuous. What Lana does, what she is, what she stands for, is the furthest thing from a mere promoter. Starting life in agriculture, Lana has been hopping on and off machines since she was eight years old and has learned every aspect of heavy plant life along the way. From fixing the machinery to building houses, there isn’t an area of
construction that Lana hasn’t turned her hand to, and this is easily demonstrated the moment you see her in action. We arrived at the Ward and Burke worksite (after getting horrendously lost because geography is not my strong suit) and were greeted with hugs and smiles from our leading lady. She left us in the capable hands of Seamus, the site manager, to get suited, booted and inducted before we were led through the mud to see what Lana is all about.
Both myself and Darren (my long-suffering business manager and travel buddy) stood in complete awe as we watched Lana seated happily in her excavator, atop a huge pile of dirt, shifting the tonnes as though it was the easiest thing in the world. She had me totally mesmerized. Even the smoothing of the load in the back of the dump truck with the bucket scoop had the finesse of a master baker icing a cake. Ten minutes went by and all I could do was watch her; privileged to have been invited into her world even for the briefest of afternoons. I completely forgot that I was there to cover what I was seeing with my camera.
Luckily, I remembered eventually because I got some absolute corkers.
april 2024 41 PLANT PLANET life with lana feature
Lana Edwards; the most respected female operator in the industry and one of our fantastic women in construction.
And it wasn’t just the standardised work I got to snap. In her break, Lana was more than happy to show us exactly how skilled she was to help me capture the perfect artsy image. Lying down in the dirt, camera zoomed in, I got to video and witness first hand her take a bottle cap off using the bucket on the digger! It was utterly sensational! And not to worry, it’s on our social media channels for you lovely readers to experience for yourselves; my excited babbling simply does not do her skills justice.
When I showed the video to my friend, she described it as ‘a gentle giant looking after you on a rainy day.’ Which it was really. At no point did it occur to me that being as up close and personal as I did with the huge chunk of metal, might lead to my untimely demise. And it wasn’t just because I looked super fetching in Lana’s high vis jacket and my snazzy helmet. Even at a safe distance, it was the closest I’d ever been to such machinery in the throes of a hard day’s toil. I knew I was safe because of the incredible woman operating the machine.
Finally meeting Lana in person wasn’t a simple exercise in an expert at work; it was a tremendous pleasure and privilege. I genuinely believe she might be one of the most down-to-earth, sincerely lovely people on this planet, which was a sentiment shared by her coworkers. Seamus seemed just as impressed by Lana as we were, with both him and Darren nattering away in feverish excitement about all the work they were doing. Lana also introduced me to Melanie,
one of the dump truck drivers, keen as ever for me to continue connecting with as many women in construction as I possibly could. Always one to further a good cause, Lana left Melanie and I to chat and catch up as she continued her tireless efforts on site.
‘She’s amazing, isn’t she?’ said Melanie, grinning just as much as me.
Yes, Melanie, she sure is.
And that’s where the problem lay for this very first episode of Life With Lana. How on earth do I encapsulate the vast talent and breadth of knowledge of this fantastic woman in a few mere pages? Simple answer? I don’t.
When we were sat down to dinner that evening, Lana regaled us with so many incredible stories that honestly my mind was a buzz with possibilities. I hung on her every word, enthralled from start to finish at the extraordinary life Lana has led. For someone who is so talented, Lana was humble and nonchalant about her achievements, always taking it back to ‘well, that’s just me. That’s just what I do.’
This teaser is only a small glimpse into the wealth of stories and experiences Lana has to share. Each issue will look at something different; be it a site visit, an old story or even the furthering of a noble cause, Lana always has something to share.
All I can say is stay tuned, dear readers. Stay. Tuned.

Connections and Conclusions
Plant Planet had an ‘absolutely fantastic’ time at the Executive Hire Show 2024. Not only because it was a ‘fantastic display’ for the hire sector, but also the ‘fantastic people’ and companies we connected with along the way.
We had a fantastic time catching up with a few of the stars of our December issue. ABAX adorned their stand with copies of their company profile, brimming with incredible information all about their fantastic tool tracking technology. We also checked in with BPH Attachments, who featured in our very first Industry Corner, and we were so happy to see that they were thriving, as always. Speaking of attachments, we dropped in at the Auger Torque stand to take a peek at their wonderful line of products. Tucked in between them, we also caught up with Spartan Solutions, whose beautiful Valentines themed stand was both eye catching and informative.
Talking of neighbours, we were also just down the row from our good friends at Close Brothers, who made for excellent dinner buddies at the awards presentation. Their asset finance should be a consideration for any of those in heavy plant of any kind, and they were on top form when educating the crowds on their services.
It was also fantastic to check in with Tyre Boss after their warehouse fire and see how they were getting on. In true Tyre Boss fashion, they are still going strong, and were all smiles as they chatted to the masses.
In the official press release rounding up the highlights of the show, Chris Moore, Publishing and Event Director of the Executive Hire Show said: “I’ would like to extend a special thank you to our sponsors, The Hire Exchange and the Hire Association Europe (HAE), for their invaluable support. Their contributions played a crucial role in the success of this year’s networking event, helping to bring the hire community together. We’re grateful for their partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to advance the hire industry. This year’s Executive Hire Show was fantastic, with an unprecedented amount of deals done. The atmosphere was electric, and it was evident that our focus on innovation and sustainability resonated with both exhibitors and visitors. We’re already looking forward to the next show and continuing to support the hire industry’s growth.”
We cannot wait to return again next year and see what EHS has in store for us on the 12th and 13th of February at the CBS Arena. Here’s to 2025!

EHS Interviews // CPA
Editor Rebecca Phillips sits down with Brian Jones, President of the Construction Plant- Hire Association (CPA) to get an insight on their exciting year ahead.
So, what’s the biggest thing for the CPA right now?
We’ve got some great events coming up - the Stars of the Future Apprentice Awards in July and the CPA Conference in November - and we’ve committed £90,000 to help fight plant equipment theft and fraud, which is costing our industry millions every year. We have 1,900 members at the CPA and we feel it’s very important that the membership funds go back towards helping them.
With additional funding from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), CESAR donors and insurers, a total of £650,000 is being contributed collectively to help fund the National Construction Agriculture Theft Team (NCATT) - a specialist team of police officers that cover the whole of the country to help tackle the theft of construction plant and equipment by organised criminal groups.
Theft and fraud have a significant effect on our members’ businesses and our contribution to the work of NCATT will bring immediate, tangible benefits to our members in preventing and detecting criminal activity and the recovery of illegally obtained plant-hire equipment. We’re working closely with Police Superintendent Andy Huddleston who heads up the National Rural Crime Unit and NCATT.

There’s been a 200% increase in the theft of construction plant and agricultural equipment in the UK.
He was on the panel at the CPA conference last November if I remember rightly?
You do, he was indeed on one of the panels. It’s a new and very important venture for us. It’s a rampant issue, more so than ever before. It’s major. There’s been a 200% increase in the theft of construction plant and agricultural equipment in the UK. One of the major problems in plant as a whole is sourcing spare parts for machines, and that has led to a crime wave of people stealing machines to dismantle them and sell the parts on.
So by investing in that, though, it means that you’re actually able to help your members from the ground up.
It’s a three year commitment and we’ll be sitting on their board as well, so we can see how it’s going, and we can report back to the members via the CPA Bulletin and through member emails.
It’s good that you guys are, then. It shows a big duty of care to your members.
Our members pay their membership fees, and we want to properly reward them the best way we can.
So, then, next up in the CPA line up is the Stars of the Future Event. Can you tell me a bit more about that?
Stars of the Future is our apprentice awards event and it’s being held on 11th July 2024 at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre near Coventry. It’s been running for eleven years now and year on year it gets bigger and bigger! We’ve had so many nominations already which is wonderful to see as we have more categories than ever before. We’ve got awards for plant mechanics, plant technicians, hire controllers, plant installers, plant operatives, young plant operatives, lifting technicians... And then there’s some special awards, like ‘Best Personal Statement’ and the ‘Judges’ Special Award’. Actually, we introduced a new category last year called ‘Apprentice Mentor of the Year’, to recognize the mentors who guide these apprentices. Someone that’s taking that time to really guide and nurture apprentices is a very, very important category.
And when you introduce a new category to an award programme, you’re never quite sure how it’s going to go, but we were inundated! We had some impressive nominations, so much so that we had to split it to group apprentice mentors and individual apprentice mentors. It was a resounding success for its first run. It’s incredible.
I’m sure this year will be another big success. Sponsorship has increased too, and we have a lot of big names involved. L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage, GAP Group, M O’Brien Plant Hire, NOCN Group, ACOP Group, JCB, Liebherr, Southern Hoist Services, Wolffkran and yourselves at Plant Planet! It means the prizes are fantastic, as well as the award winners getting national recognition. This year there are even overseas trips on offer to some of the winners.
That sounds fantastic!
It’s the premier awards for apprentices now because it’s not just an ordinary awards ceremony. It’s glamour for them, a chance to show their families and friends how amazingly they’re doing. It’s not just that the award or the prize, it’s the accolade and the recognition.

That’s so special!
As it should be, you know. We want to encourage the younger generations to enter and thrive in our industry, particularly women. In years gone by, the industry could be exclusionary to women, and we want to change that. By championing their efforts, we help cement their career in construction.
You’re right, it’s very important. Not even just women, but for construction in general; workforce retention is very low at the moment. So, by championing people early on in their career, you inspire them to stick around.
Like you say, we want to give them that momentum to carry on and keep working towards a lifelong career. It’s astounding work.
Thank you. I’d also like to mention the work we’re doing with the Lighthouse Club Charity, as it’s really fantastic welfare work. The Lighthouse Club have the ‘Make it Visible’ campaign, which ensures the wellbeing of operators and construction workers. They’ve always been there to help families when they’ve needed help, but this new campaign is all about visibility and having the ease of access to reach out when needed. We’ve got these stickers here which go in the cab with the numbers you need. That means, for whatever reason, if the operator needs to talk to someone, they always have access to someone. We promote that with them, which is really good for us and our members.
It sounds it! Mental health is so important and often not talked about enough.
I agree. I’ve been in the industry a long time and when I read that two construction workers take their own lives every day of the week, it breaks my heart. It’s so, so sad. It can happen to any of us. We all have off days, but sometimes it goes further than simply feeling low. And when that’s the case, there are people that understand the severity of the situation, of different parameters, different triggers. Having that kind of service gives people the space to work out their problems exactly as they need to. That’s why we’re working closer with them now, and we’ve hosted a webinar to introduce the Make It Visible campaign to CPA members and make them aware of the resources that are available. This is just the beginning. They have people out on the road, visiting sites, setting up welfare rooms… it’s been very successful.
I suppose it normalises it as well. I mean, the idea of mental health is still relatively new, isn’t it? I know we’ve been doing a lot more about it in the past, let’s say, 10-20 years, but in reality, it’s still quite new, and there’s a little bit of a stigma around it. Actually having things like this and seeing organisations such as yourself promoting the importance of mental health is such a huge step in the right direction. It’s really good. It sends a message out to everyone that they should be able to reach out and talk about what’s going on. I think it’s like any health problems, you know, you always hear that, men in particular, won’t speak to each other or speak to somebody about something. But I think the wellbeing and mental health are becoming more acknowledged, which is why it’s called ‘Make It Visible.’ We care about the members, we care about the industry, and so we’re throwing our weight behind it.
We want to encourage the younger generations to enter and thrive in our industry, particularly women. In years gone by, the industry could be exclusionary to women, and we want to change that.

EHS Interviews // Commercial Fuel Solutions
Commercial Fuel Solutions Ltd had teamed up with E-Power to debut not simply their new partnership, but also their fantastic product, the 45 kVA Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Power Generator. Editor Rebecca Phillips sat down with Robin Futcher, MD of Commercial Fuel Solutions, to talk in depth about this fantastic product.
Tell me then, how did Commercial Fuel Solutions get started?
So I’ve been working in the fuel distribution equipment industry for 26-27 years. I started commercial fuel solutions out of my garage at the back of my house.
Oh really? It was a garage business?
Absolutely. 17 years ago in fact. I think I had about 80 square foot which was enough for a desk, a tablecloth, camping chair and a very small computer set up.
So what prompted the career change for you?
As an engineer, I have always been very passionate about trying to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment. Now, initially, way back then, that was more about preventing containment releases, so I made sure that people’s systems were well maintained, that there were less oil leaks and oil and fuel spills into the environment, making sure that there were containment systems in place, upskilling people, encouraging that they train their staff. A lot of this was encompassed within the Oil Storage Regulations and Control of Pollution Act, and it was at this point I started to study guidance and regulations and standards that helped improve working practices. That’s where the transition really came in.
And it expanded from there?
Yes, gradually over time, we just kept needing bigger and bigger premises. Now, we’re at over 20,000 square foot, and we’ve just developed what we’re dubbing the Centre of Excellence. We have the latest machinery, everything from 3D printers and turning lathes and machining equipment. We have a design lab and a fuel testing laboratory, and we’re also building a training centre.
Now, we’re at over 20,000 square foot, and we’ve just developed what we’re dubbing the Centre of Excellence.
april 2024 53 PLANT PLANET Executive Hire Show // Commercial Fuel Solutions Review
That’s amazing!
So we’re in a progressive stage now, and we’ve been designing fuel systems for a long time. We do formula one teams, agriculture, construction, but heavy transport is our main market by far though. When we first considered ‘how do we decarbonize our industry’ about 5-6 years ago, hydrogen was the obvious choice, where electrification just isn’t practical. Think about construction for a moment. Even if you do get the planning consent and you go in, the first thing you do with your site is that you send in your heavy machinery to flatten the ground, dig the trenches, etc. Even if you could electrify that equipment, which may be possible in future, you’re still going to need hydrogen to mobilise the energy for that equipment. And this is why we identified hydrogen as an essential fuel source for the future of decarbonizing our key markets. So we feel we have a sense of responsibility as a manufacturer of these type of products to help educate people on what that decarbonization journey looks like.
That’s an amazing outlook.
I guess it’s a bit of a cliche, but they say, give the people what they want. And right now, what the industry wants when it comes to hydrogen applications, is a lower capex and accessible hydrogen. Our unit delivers on both those points.
Wow! So not only are you offering a better environmental source, but you’re also aiding with spending!
Exactly. With regards to capex, this unit will cost a third of its fuel cell equivalent. The cost of fuel costs between 25% and 40% less per kilo. It utilizes an internal combustion engine, which is proven technology, as well as being ready to run on hydrogen grades 98% upwards, which means it’s less susceptible to impurities, especially from hydrogen that has been manufactured from methane.
It never occurred to me that there would be more than one type of hydrogen. I’m a terrible science teacher’s wife.
That’s okay, I don’t think many people realise that there are many different grades.
Can you tell me more about them?
So, there’s two key production methods with regards to hydrogen. If you want to distil it down to the basics, you have electrolytically produced hydrogen, whether that’s PEM electrolysis, alkaline or solid oxide, this has very high purity. When we look at gas derived hydrogen, which is the majority of hydrogen produced today, this is produced from hydrocarbon gases like methane,
54 april 2024 PLANT PLANET Review Executive Hire Show // Commercial Fuel Solutions
and still contains sulphur compounds which have a very high severity level as a contaminant to fuel cells. An internal combustion engine is not susceptible to these sulphur compounds. The maximum tolerable amount of sulphur compounds that you can have in fuel cell grade hydrogen is four parts per billion, so you need a purity of 99.9999996%. Is that purity easily achievable? It’s unlikely that other fuel cell grades, say, 99.97%, will contain that many sulphur compounds if they’ve been produced from electrolytic hydrogen. But if they’ve been produced from gas derived hydrogen, which as we’ve already explained is the majority of hydrogen produced today, then this actually means that there’s a strong probability you will have the sulphur compounds which attack fuel cells and deteriorate it over time.
That sounds like it can make quite a considerable difference!
If you have complete control of your supply chain, then you’re less likely to be susceptible to these issues. But looking midterm and long term, we believe that the cost point of gas derived hydrogen is much lower than electrolytic hydrogen. This means that if people are looking to buy their fuel, they’re often going to buy the cheapest source, and might not necessarily understand these intricate differences.
So, you’re hoping people will balance between good quality and price in the future, rather than simply focusing on price?
Price is a concern, and we absolutely understand that. At this stage in the market, what we want to do is make hydrogen deployment less cost prohibitive. We want to open up that conversation. A big challenge for the industry at the moment is distribution infrastructure. What this does is it enables you to run a crude degrade of hydrogen, which still has significantly lower emissions than the diesel equivalent and opens up the opportunity to educate people on the use of hydrogen safely. Educate companies and in turn you educate their team, which will have a ripple effect across industry and hopefully escalate the uptake of hydrogen as an alternative power source compared to fossil fuels.
Education is the way forward. Absolutely. More than anything.

Telematics: The Secret to Success in Plant Hire abax
In recent years, telematics has become a big deal in the rental industry, transforming how businesses manage their fleets and equipment. Combining telecommunications with informatics, telematics offers a bird’seye view of fleet operations, delivering insights that were previously unimaginable. This powerful technology is now at the forefront of industry innovation, reshaping how businesses manage, track, and maintain their equipment.

Understanding the Telematics Revolution
Telematics systems integrate GPS and Bluetooth technologies to monitor various fleetrelated behaviours, including location, machine health, and operational hours. This technology provides rental desks and fleet managers with a goldmine of data, empowering them to make informed, data-driven decisions that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and elevate customer experiences.
1. Keeping an Eye on Everything
With telematics, you’re never in the dark about where your equipment is or how it’s doing. Real-time tracking lets you see exactly what’s going on with your equipment. This means better inventory management and a solid grip on your business’s performance. It’s about managing logistics, servicing, and even scheduling downtime efficiently.
2. Keeping Teams Connected
One of the perennial challenges in the plant hire industry is maintaining seamless communication between office teams and field operatives. Smooth communication is key in this business. With telematics, passing data between the office and field workers is instant. This tech, especially when it’s part of your rental software, keeps everyone updated. Planning jobs becomes easier, helping assign the right job to the right person and saving fuel and time.
3. Using Your Equipment Wisely
Telematics takes the guesswork out of equipment management, providing real-time insights into machine usage and health. This allows businesses to strategically schedule maintenance and repairs, preventing costly downtime and extending the operational life of their assets. No one likes idle equipment. Telematics data can highlight underutilised equipment, offering opportunities to improve the bottom line by adjusting rental strategies and identifying potential areas for investment.
4. Protecting Your Assets
Worried about theft? Telematics has your back. Setting up a ‘Geofence’ – a virtual boundary – sends you alerts if your equipment strays. These automated alerts for equipment entering or leaving predefined areas enhance security and deter theft. That’s peace of mind for you.
5. Happy Customers
Beyond tracking and managing equipment, telematics plays a huge role in customer satisfaction. By providing accurate, real-time data on equipment location and availability, rental businesses can exceed customer expectations, offering precise information on delivery timings and service updates. This transparency is key for building trust and keeping strong long-lasting business relationships.

Ten Tips for Choosing the Right Telematics Provider
Ready to dive into telematics? There’s plenty of choices out there. Choosing the right telematics provider is crucial for any plant hire business looking to enhance efficiency, security, and customer satisfaction. Here’s how to make sure you pick the best fit for your needs:
1. Understand Your Needs
Start by identifying the specific challenges you want to tackle with telematics. Are you aiming to improve asset tracking, cut down on fuel use, enhance safety, or boost customer service? Knowing your main goals will help you find a provider that offers the right features.
2. Evaluate the Technology
Look for a provider that offers dependable and robust technology. Key features to consider include real-time GPS tracking, geofencing, detailed reporting, and the ability to monitor vehicle health. The provider should offer a platform that is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with your existing systems.
3. Check for Scalability
Opt for a provider that can grow with your business. The telematics solution should be flexible enough to handle more vehicles and equipment as your fleet gets bigger. Scalability ensures you won’t have to switch providers as your business expands.
4. Consider Customer Support
Good customer support is vital. Look for a provider that offers comprehensive training, ongoing support, and readily available customer service. You should feel confident that you can get help when you need it, whether it’s for troubleshooting or learning how to use new features.
5. Assess Integration Capabilities
The ability to integrate with other software systems, such as rental management or maintenance scheduling software, can significantly enhance operational efficiency. Check whether the telematics system can work smoothly with your existing software to avoid data silos and streamline workflows.
6. Review Data Security Measures
Given the sensitivity of telematics data, it’s important to choose a provider that prioritises data security. Ask about their data protection measures and make sure they comply with relevant privacy laws and regulations.
7. Ask for References
Nothing speaks louder than the experiences of current customers. Ask for references or case studies, and consider reaching out to existing clients to discuss their experiences. This can give you insights into the reliability, performance, and customer service quality of the provider.
8. Consider the Cost
While cost shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision, it’s important to ensure that the telematics solution offers good value. Compare pricing models, and beware of hidden costs. Look for a transparent pricing structure that fits your budget and offers a clear return on investment.
9. Look for Industry Experience
A provider with experience in the plant hire sector will understand your specific challenges and needs. They can offer valuable insights and tailored solutions that a more generic provider might not.
10. Trial the System
If possible, trial the system before making a long-term commitment. A hands-on experience can help you assess the ease of use, features, and overall suitability of the telematics solution for your business.
Choosing the right telematics provider is a strategic decision that can significantly impact your plant hire business’s operational efficiency and success. By taking the time to thoroughly evaluate your options based on these criteria, you can ensure that you select a provider that meets your specific needs and supports your business goals.

Tips and tricks to get the most out of your machine!
Despite the technological advancements increasing at an alarming rate, there is something to be said for sticking with what you know. This is especially so, when you’ve invested a HEFTY amount of money into a piece of kit you end up spending more time with than your own family and friends (sorry Nan, my telehandler needs me more).
april 2024 67 PLANT PLANET Machinery Longevity feature
At this time when prices are on the rise and circular economy is an omnipresent goal, it’s prudent to look after your plant as carefully as possible. We need to look after our planet, and contributing to overproduction is often unnecessary when fastidious care of your plant machinery could save this cost to ‘Mother Earth’. This should resonate with an industry that is often labelled as being detrimental to the environment, so it is important to do our bit to aid in the green initiative.
With this in mind, Plant Planet has compiled a handy checklist of all the best ways to always keep your plant machinery in tip-top shape: be it investments, best practice or just a little common-sense reminder; we have covered it all!
Proper Maintenance
Proven Products
• It seems like a no brainer that if you’ve spent tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of pounds on your heavy plant machinery, that you’d want to use the best products on the market to help maintain the inner workings; be it grease for the cogs or the fuel that runs it. Unfortunately, when it comes to factoring in cost, many of us are easily tempted by something that seems a bargain. And it’s all the same stuff at the end of the day, right? WRONG! Ensuring you have the best materials to upkeep your vehicle will lead to it lasting far longer and will ultimately make your original investment go further. Now that really is more bang for your buck!
Reliable Attachments
• Just like when swiping through Tinder, you want to make sure that the attachment you’re looking at is the right one for you! As with the inner cogs, it’s imperative that the accessories to the outside of your plant machinery are in tip-top shape AND the best to suit your individual needs. Best practice is to do as much research as possible and speak with reputable suppliers about what they have to offer, as many can create bespoke attachments which can be maintained by the supplier too.
68 april 2024 PLANT PLANET feature Machinery Longevity
Telematics Apps
• Technological advancements now mean that data sharing and reporting is easier than ever. With a variety of apps to choose from to suit your specific needs, it makes sense to invest in the best tech to look after your fleet/individual machine. Apps create an easy data storage system, meaning you can not only log reports on them and share to the relevant people, but also find them again easily. Whether you’re a business owner, foreman or operator, you can have all the health and safety information immediately at the touch of a button.
• Apps mean you can check easily if a report is due or has been logged. Daily, monthly, yearly, whatever the need, you can set simple reminders and trackers to ensure you’re always up to code.
• Following the above also means you stay on top of any required maintenance, such as yearly services. It also increases the chance of preventative maintenance as opposed to reactive, making it far more likely you’ll only need to replace one small part of your machine rather than the whole thing. A small investment into such technology now can save you far more pennies in the long run.
Correct User training
• Taking time to train operators to the fullest extent may sometimes seem extreme, but it ensures that you not only have someone who understands their machine, but also someone who understands the specific health and safety attached to its use. Not only will it keep them and others around them safe, but it means that problems are reported properly and early; all leading back to proper maintenance being upheld.
• Proper training also means the operator knows how to use a machine within specific parameters, i.e. no overloading, overturning etc, all of which can deteriorate a machine far quicker than expected.
• Many suppliers and manufacturers provide training days for the machines that they sell, so it’s worth attending those. They can provide machine-specific information and go into much more detail than a general overview.
april 2024 69 PLANT PLANET Machinery Longevity feature
Regular Inspections/Reports
Careful Storage
• Proper storage of a machine means that environmental conditions such as weather, water, heat won’t be able to get to it and turn metal to rust.
• Chemical interference is also something to consider when it comes to storage of your machinery when not in use. If abrasive chemicals come into contact with your machinery, they can easily erode parts leading to the need for replacements more often, which wastes time and money.
Good Relationships
• It might sound silly, but having the right people on side when a problem strikes can save so much time. Relationships with suppliers and professionals paves the way for care and advice to be accessible at all times, leaving you in no doubt of the best course of action.
• Knowing who to call for the specific problem at hand is also very important. It ensures correct care of each individual need of each individual machine.
• Good communication with your own teams is also an important factor to create a proactive attitude to maintenance, encouraging care of machinery at all times.
Other benefits of proper maintenance
As we said at the beginning, the benefits of good plant care are not just sustainably focused. Looking after your machines directly affects the business as a whole, in more ways than you might at first think.
• Ultimately, machine longevity is cost effective. Longer machine life means money goes further and less breakdowns means schedules and contracts are retained. You can make well planned and predicted promises to customers knowing they will be kept, which in turn leads to returning clients and further revenue.
• Increasing safety is also never going to be a bad thing. Regular maintenance identifies potential hazards before accidents can occur, meaning that operators remain well looked after. That duty of care also demonstrates a good ethic and level of respect for all workers, no matter the level. And in this day and age where everyone is ever in the public eye and therefore under scrutiny, a business that looks after their people will always be trusted and respected more than those that don’t.

REBECCA PHILLIPS EDITOR
This month’s Industry Corner took me all the way to the very heart of Lincoln (which trust me, from Chichester is a HEFTY drive). For over 100 years, Witham Group Ltd has operated out of this historic city, bringing quality oils and paints to Britain for three generations of the founding family. Whatever the industry, whatever the demand, Witham Group has always been there to meet it.
Witham Group Ltd Oiling the Cogs of Innovation
I arrived on site to a veritable hive of activity, the excitement palpable as I was taken through to the boardroom. Sat in my comfy chair with my fizzy water (don’t judge me, I like it, okay?), I got chatting to Ali Bottom, Group Marketing Director, who explained that they were smack bang in the middle of renewing their Royal Warrant, which is absolutely as honourable as it sounds, particularly with our new King, likely to be really honing in on who should and shouldn’t have one. Since 1991, Witham Group has been proud to supply oil and paint to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk and the Royal Crest is something that represents a mark of excellence, with a proven track record of service, environmental credentials and good quality products.
What I assumed (incorrectly I might say) is that my visit would focus on long standing tradition. As long as plant machinery has existed, the need for lubricants has been paramount, and Witham has certainly been around long enough to meet that demand. The HQ was certainly wholly elegant and welcoming, steeped in old world grace and refinement.
Yet, at the very heart of Witham Group beats the drum of innovation. Not just in best practice and ideals, but with the all-important green initiative that might otherwise be easily forgotten. A pillar of the community in so many ways, Witham Group is at the forefront of a long-needed journey into a better and brighter future, and I was truly honoured to be invited along for the ride.
Nigel Bottom, Managing Director, took me not only on a tour of their incredible facility, but also on a journey to the very heart of their operation. Their ethos, their brand, the very fabric of the molecular structure that makes up their oils and lubricants, Nigel and Ali detailed it all. Join us, dear readers. Join us!

We are the largest oil manufacturer in the UK that no one has ever heard of but our ethos of quality products and offering the best customer service we can has held us in very good stead.
So, 103 years of oil and paint.
A: That’s what we do!
N: Certainly is. I’m the third generation of my family to work within the company and the business also has a fourth generation of the Smith family still working in it too.
That’s incredible. You must be so proud to be continuing and expanding the family business?
N: Absolutely, I’m extremely proud. We are the largest oil manufacturer in the UK that no one has ever heard of but our ethos of quality products and offering the best customer service we can has held us in very good stead.
Is it too broad to ask you what you’re all about?
N: No, of course not!
Not lazy journalism then?
N: No, because everyone is different and works to different specifications. Here at Witham, we work directly with technology companies that supply the information
april 2024 73 PLANT PLANET Witham Group Ltd industry corner
that’s required. So, there are companies that basically work with the oil industry on their data collection, and they take the proverbial operators’ manual and access to technical information. From there, they gather information on the engine, the transmission, the gearbox, and the hydraulics. This all comes together, and eventually cascades to a technical specification. That’s the information we then base our lubricant requirements on. We blend ours to meet that technical specification. Unfortunately, there are a few companies that don’t, but there are still a number of large brands, international brands and local UK brands and companies that do this similar role, so we needed to set ourselves apart from the rest. And our green initiative seemed just the way to do that.
Forgive me for saying this, but when people think of oil, I don’t think many would assume its manufacturing to be a particularly green process.
N: Honestly it wasn’t for a long time. The amount of energy used during the process can definitely not be considered sustainable.
A: It’s something we really believe in here though. It makes up our core values.
N: We looked internally to see how we could then make our offering environmentally sustainable. So, we started with the quick wins. We looked at our recycling process, paper and plastic, the basics. The we started using grey water for washing the vehicles and the factory itself. Out of all the stuff, that was pretty easy. Then we looked at our raw material suppliers’ environmental credentials and the way that they were manufacturing the product that we would buy. We like to ask questions, find more sustainable solutions. So, if we’re buying a mineral base for a hydraulic application, could we replace that with a canola or rape seed oil application? If we change it, will the oil give the same specification and quality? If that’s a simple yes, then excellent! But what’s the cost implication?
An ongoing conversation, then?
N: Exactly. And that’s meant that we can offer much more environmentally friendly alternatives to our general products.
We like to ask questions, find more sustainable solutions.

Meaning it’s a conscious decision of the operator to use it?
N: Yes, but unfortunately, up until probably the last year or two, it’s been significantly more expensive, so uptake wasn’t necessarily high initially.
Do you think that’s changing now, given the moral standpoint a lot of people have?
A: I think there’s an accountability there nowadays for quite a lot of companies, so definitely some pressure to make the switch.
N: If I’m brutally honest, I don’t think the company size makes any difference. Whether it’s small or big, some can react better. The smaller operator with a more unique service might only be able to supply locally but will supply with a better environmental ethos. The bigger companies have departments that look after that and do that as well, but also have huge quotas to make. Depending on who’s buying that machine, they will dictate to the manufacturer that it must come with a biodegradable option. So, it all really depends. We just want to be able to provide people with the choice.
A: So many companies are looking at their supply chain. Where do they get their fuel from? Where do they get their oil from? Where do they get their cleaning products, anything really!
So, you’re right more recently, there is a move to look at a supply chain and find sustainable suppliers. Now, whether that’s because the board of a company says they’ve got to do that, or whether it’s their consumers pushing them, it all varies. Sometimes it truly is just a moral standpoint that fuels them, a bit like us here at Witham. It’s going on in virtually every business. For some, they realise that they have to tighten up their act because they won’t be a preferred supplier if they don’t. So sometimes it’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, which is good. We’re already setting ourselves up to say we’re a good supplier choice because we have the green alternatives as an option.
Do you feel like you guys are ahead of the curve as a supplier in that regard?
N: I’d say so. It’s all part of our three-tier plan.
Three-tier plan? I love a good plan.
A: So do we!
N: The green initiative falls into three sections. Raw Materials, Educating Customers, and our Blending Operation.
76 april 2024 PLANT PLANET industry corner Witham Group Ltd
BEFORE after
Ah, so we’ve spoken a little about the raw materials.
N: Yes, but there’s a bit more to it. If there’s an option for us to purchase product that is environmentally sustainable, we do that, and that includes our packaging. Our 25L drums, for example. Can we buy a proper pack that’s got a certain amount of recycled media within it?
There are many that are now 30-35% recycled media. But does it perform how we need it to? Can it be stacked? Will it break if it rolled over in the back of the trunk? It’s got to be able to be refilled, whatever the weather outside, whatever the scenario is. So that was a switch we could make on our smaller packaging. But then we looked at the oil barrels themselves. They’re metal barrels that are dropped off and then when they’re finished, they’re disposed of. We thought, what if we did away with that completely. Now, depending on geographical area of course, we supply free oil tanks that can be filled in bulk. Then they are directly refilled.
So there’s no need for packaging at all?
N: Not in bulk.
A: And the tanks are colour-coded so it’s clear to manufacturers what they are, and they in turn have zero packaging.
Sounds fantastic!
A: Thank you, we’re really proud of it. It’s helping pave the way for how workshops and businesses are handling and using oils and lubricants.
What about the next stage of your plan? The educational side of things?
N: So, we work with colleges and universities doing educational tours. We’ve actually got a tour tonight from a local group that are coming round, probably a dozen or so. But we also work with dealerships, where we bring them in and will train and educate their service managers and engineers on what types of lubricant need to be used where and when. We also work in conjunction, and we are on their advisory committee of the National Fluid Power Centre, who train businesses in the sector. So they work in fluids, electronics and pneumatics for every highway application globally. Their advisory committee is approximately 50 to 200 of the largest suppliers in the highway world, and they do all the training for those businesses, like hydraulic training for example. NFPC sit at the core of the actual business, and their information is invaluable. It’s vital to know what product is needed to prevent waste, time, money… there are so many factors to it.
april 2024 77 PLANT PLANET Witham Group Ltd industry corner
BEFORE after
Do you think people tend to skimp on quality for price?
N: Yes, and it makes no sense if you think about it. The equipment you are using the oil on can reach up to hundreds of thousands of pounds. Businesses need to rely on the fact it will run and function properly, which means the internal mechanics need to be in tip top shape. Therefore, if you know you’re not only getting a high-quality oil to help do that, but also the best one for the task, you’ll rest easy. And that’s what we want to help people to understand. We want to pass on our knowledge to our customers. We always have.
Especially as proper lubrication is so important to the longevity of the machine being used.
N: It is, but the thing is, people don’t see it, so they don’t always consider how vital it is. Every time you get in a plane, a train, a car, a machine, you don’t see the lubrication that it’s boiling out. But that’s what keeps it going, so it’s one of the most important raw materials that we can make. I mean, look at it this way, we had to remain open throughout Covid as a critical business and supplier. There always needed to be a supply of grease for the ambulances, the supermarket delivery
trucks, farming machinery… they couldn’t stop so neither could we. But in a lot of instances people will know they use the product, but not understand, probably the importance of using the correct product for the correct application. And that’s why carrying out an initial lubrication survey is so important because that tells us the nitty gritty information that is most needed.
Is that the first thing you do then? A lubrication survey?
N: Absolutely. Irrespective of the chief engineer or the business owner, we need to see the information for ourselves so we can best help them with their needs. Think of it as an onion. You have to peel everything back to the middle of the onion until you reach that core information. It’s the OM that dictates the quality and specification of the oil with respect, not the end user. And, and there’s a real issue in the industry of end users not knowing which exact oil they need. They phone us and say: ‘we need hydraulic 46 oil!’ We’ve got nine different types of 46 hydraulic oils. So which one exactly? If we go to the manual instead, we get our answer. Then we can start asking the additional questions to find out what else we can do. It takes time, but it’s well worth it.

So then, the all-important question… What’s the final part of the plan?
N: The biggest third of the plan, from an environmental point of view, was always going to be our blending operation. So, the traditional blending operation and the way the industry manufactures lubricants has probably not changed in 103 years.
Not at all?
N: Well, certain things have changed. It’s not a person with a wooden stick anymore, it’s a mechanized paddle, but the actual process to manufacture lubricant is pretty much the same. In a nutshell, you heat the raw materials to about 60 degrees and place it in a bog cold front. No matter the size of the blending vessel, and we’re talking thousands of tonnes, in essence, they’re still heating it in one way: gas, electric element or water jacket. And obviously, the heating of a massive vat of lubricant used a ridiculous amount of electricity and gas.
A: That’s when we started looking at power generation. The necessity to improve both the time, cost, and environmental impact of the lubricant manufacturing industry, has driven us to develop a new and extremely innovative process.
N: We’ve got 90,000 square foot of factory here, a huge roof facing into the sunshine, so we put some solar panels on there, which was both environmentally and financially beneficial. And it got us thinking: if there is an alternative method for electricity, is there perhaps one for the blending process? Now, we manufacture paint, something that I’m not sure any other oil company does. And it was us considering how to improve the blending process for paint that provided the idea of using sonics for lubricant blending.
Using sound?
N: Exactly! The process is called Blendtek Solutions. After two to four years’ development work, we took a sonic tube with 32000 transducers in there and instead of using a mechanical paddle and heat, we developed a method and prototype to use ultrasound to mix the lubricant. You place ten different liquids in a tube and you send ultrasound; through there the cavitation of the ultrasound basically pulls the products in and mixes them at a molecular level. It’s a big eureka moment, because all of a sudden, we didn’t need to heat the product, we didn’t need to use a mechanical paddle to mix it and we could use it plugged into a plug on a wall. So, before, it took about 1962kw of power to blend 10000 litres of oil. Now, it takes 8kw!

april 2024 81 PLANT PLANET Witham Group Ltd industry corner
I’m sorry, 8kw of power?
N: And no heat needed at all. Our gas usage has reduced by 93%.
*It should be noted at this point I was genuinely too stunned to speak*
A: We didn’t do it from a cost saving point of view. We did it from an environmental and sustainability venture. Now, realistically, it has put a huge saving into the blending part of our business, which means we’ve been able to pass on every penny to the customer.
N: It’s totally transformed the way we work. I think a lot of companies try to offset their carbon footprint by “offsetting” or investing in “sinks” such as planting lots of trees to balance out their usage. Instead, we’re not using fossil fuels at all. Using this process, we remove the need for base oils and additives to be heated at all. This also means our product packs can be filled immediately without the need for cooling and we can also blend much smaller bespoke batches. We are now blending completely carbon neutral.
That is actually ASTOUNDING!
A: We’re so excited about it. This new way of blending lubricants has so many other opportunities in the oil industry.
N: It’s definitely something to be proud of and something we hope our customers feel good about too.
After picking my jaw up off the floor, Nigel took me on a tour of their HQ and warehouse.
What started as a family business has somehow managed to remain just that, with the added twist of a modern, innovative business. Everywhere we went, we were met with engaging smiles from the staff, the atmosphere calm despite how busy it was. I got to see everything from the mixing process to the barrels loaded onto the trucks ready for distribution. It was a warm, open invitation to how this fantastic business operates, with so much to see and learn along the way. I even got a freebie of multipurpose aerosol lubricant (which, side note, has led to the quietest hinges on my stupid pantry door)!
My advice? If you want to know more about this fantastic company, go along to their training sessions or visit their website. You won’t be disappointed.

Kubota Press Day
Plant Planet was privileged to be at the Kubota press day for the debut of their new KTH telehandler and RT range.
A drizzly drive was not enough to dampen our spirits as we drove up to beautiful Oxfordshire. How could they be when we knew we’d be spending the day trying out incredible compact machinery. Our venue for the day was the picturesque Oxfordshire Golf Hotel and Spa, which was as comfortable and convenient as it was impressive. Our day started off with a welcome breakfast, giving us a chance to catch up with everyone who was in attendance. Fed and watered, we dived into our goody bags before settling down with a short presentation and safety briefing, which not only detailed the impressive specifications for the machines we’d be testing, but also the rules and regulations for the day ahead.
Geared up in our snazzy Kubota high viz, we headed out to the demonstration area. Split into smaller groups and armed with a dedicated expert to show us the ropes, we took it in turns to watch and learn about the two new ranges we were there to see. We kicked off with the RT range, testing them with a variety of attachments to see exactly what they were capable of. From loading stacked pallets into the back of a van, to shifting dirt into a dumper truck, there was nothing this incredible range of machines couldn’t offer. The eco-battery powered models were also so incredibly quiet, I could barely hear them sneaking around the site! Whatever the need, it would seem that Kubota has you covered.
After a fantastic lunch, we were back outside again and this time, we were trying out the machine of the hour, the KTH telehandler. A first for Kubota, this telehandler was designed with operator comfort in mind. Not only was it the plushest interior ever seen on a telehandler, but the window offered incredible range of sight when seated in the cab. Even the wipers were fitted vertically to ensure no smears or scratches to the windscreen. This beautiful machine was created to be incredibly user friendly, making it simple enough for even novices like us to pick up a few tips and tricks. A veritable triumph of a day, Kubota absolutely knocked it out of the park. It was fantastic to come together with like minds to see the machines in action; the entire day spent in the perfect mix of laughter and probing discussion. The Kubota team were utterly brilliant, answering any and all questions with the right level of detail at any given time.
Thanks for the invite! We thoroughly look forward to the next one.

RT Range
All RT wheel loaders are articulated, with each name (RT###) standing for R=Radlader / Number = represents operating weight. The steering is done via the central articulation using a hydraulic cylinder, with the front half of the chassis articulating up to 45 degrees! The wheels follow the same line as the attachment, which in turn renders it easier to manoeuvre and also offers a smaller turning radius. The articulation also allows the chassis to oscillate providing better contact with uneven ground for all wheel traction. Machine weights start from 1.1 and go up to 2.9 metric tonnes, with impressive tipping loads (forks) from 550 to 1600kg and lift heights (pin) from 2170 to 2964mm.

The loader market turns electric: Avant Power’s new battery factory responds to growing international demand
The electrification of the non-road machinery market starts most strongly in the compact machine sector. Finnish loader manufacturer Avant Tecno Oy responds to the change by taking another significant step as a pioneer in the loader world. The new thirdgeneration fully electric Avant loaders have batteries that are manufactured at Avant Power’s new battery factory in Ylöjärvi, Finland. Full investments have been made to develop the unique battery technology. “In five years, half of the loaders we sell may be electric,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.
The compact machine market has been growing rapidly in recent years, especially in developed countries. Problems with the availability of labour and constantly tightening occupational safety regulations create more demand, to which multipurpose compact loaders respond well. Compact loaders can be used to work efficiently all year round, and their versatility is enhanced by a wide range of atachments. Another megatrend related to compact machines is zero emissions, which is becoming more and more prominent. This is due to the pressure created by general national and international emission targets to reduce coal use.
In addition, small machines are often used partly or entirely indoors, and the work is naturally best done emission-free for health reasons alone.
Avant Tecno has been developing electric loaders over four decades, and the company is now responding to the change with a huge development step. Avant Power, the newest subsidiary of the Avant Group, designs and manufactures batteries optimised for Avant compact loaders at the Avant factory site in Ylöjärvi, Finland. The new third-generation electric loaders have just entered production, and their lithium-ion batteries are the best on the compact loader market.
april 2024 95 PLANT PLANET Avant Tecno product focus
“Our own battery production gives us a unique head start in the electric loader market now and in the future. According to the fastest scenario, up to half of the loaders we sell could be electric in as little as five years. However, diesel loaders will still be needed for a long time, as some market areas will switch to electric loaders on a much slower schedule,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.
The world’s only loader manufacturer with its own battery factory
Avant made the decision to start its own battery development because there was not yet a good enough battery in the world that would be a perfect fit for Avant loaders. Under Avant’s roof, there were people with the expertise required for the bold project, and eventually, these
experts formed the core team of the new subsidiary.
“Now, a solid foundation for battery production has been built through hard work. We have invested heavily in product development, and we also have partners with world-class expertise. The exceptional solutions in our battery technology bring many benefits to our customers, and we will be able to respond to strong international growth in the future,” says Mikko Piepponen, COO of Avant Power, who is also responsible for creating the new technology.
Avant Power’s current facilities have served as a production development laboratory, where battery testing and manufacturing technology have been fine-tuned. Both the new battery technology and the battery factory production line have been designed
by Avant Power. The same goes for most of the production equipment, which is exceptional on a global scale. Since production and the product have been designed at the same time, the whole process is as simple and uncompromising as possible.
“We have used the most modern possibilities in automation and developed the production line solutions ourselves. We started production at a moderate pace, and towards the end of the year we will increase it to full speed. Next year we will manufacture 700 to 800 batteries. The self-designed and implemented production line enables, above all, agility and scalability. At the same time, all expertise related to batteries and loaders is under the same roof,” says Santu Tyynelä, Chief Design Officer at Avant Power.
96 april 2024 PLANT PLANET product focus Avant Tecno
Currently, batteries are manufactured on one production line, but another production line has already been ordered and its installation is awaited.
The best battery on the loader market
Avant Power’s globally unique Avant OptiTemp® battery technology further improves the working time, capacity, pricing, safety, durability, and lifespan of electric loaders.
Thanks to immersion cooling technology, the batteries have excellent thermal management, which has long been one of the biggest challenges in battery technology, especially in mobile machines and equipment exposed to fluctuations in outdoor temperature. Avant OptiTemp® battery technology makes the operation of an electric loader more efficient than ever before, both in
severe frosts and hot working conditions. In addition, the batteries have multi-level protection, which makes them very safe.
The operating time of electric loaders has now reached a completely new level. The new fully electric Avant e527 loader has a working time of 6 hours in optimal conditions, which is up to double compared to the previous Avant e6 electric loader. On a single charge, you can drive the new e-loader for 21 kilometres. The range is more than 60% longer than the range of the previous Avant e6.
Due to Avant’s own battery production, the new electric loaders are very competitively priced.
“The loader battery is the largest single price component of the machine, and the price of battery cells is the most significant price component of batteries.
With our own battery manufacturing and efficient procurement of battery cells directly from the cell manufacturer, we can significantly reduce the price of the loader. With our own company focusing on battery technology, we can also develop the battery for future needs in the best possible way,” says CEO Jani Käkelä.
New Avant e series available now
The fully electric loaders from Avant’s renewed e series – the Avant e513 (battery capacity 13 kWh) and Avant e527 (battery capacity 27 kWh) – are now in production. The domestic delivery time is about 10 weeks from the order. In export countries, the delivery time varies from country to country. More detailed information on delivery times is provided by importers.

The new loaders are equipped with Avant OptiTemp® battery packs (13 kWh and 27 kWh) manufactured by Avant Tecno’s subsidiary Avant Power. The globally unique battery technology brings capacity to a whole new level, and the energy density of the batteries is among the best in the world. The thermal management system of the patented lithium-ion batteries guarantees the same capacity in hot and extremely cold temperatures. Multi-level protection makes Avant OptiTemp® batteries very safe.
Power for demanding professional use
The new Avant e513 and Avant e527 loaders are almost identical, but the only difference lies in the capacity of the batteries. The Avant e513 (13 kWh) is a good choice for short-term continuous use on cattle farms, horse stables, greenhouses or DIY and leisure time, for example. The Avant e527 loader (27 kWh) with a larger battery is ideal for demanding professional use. Construction and demolition contractors will benefit from this model.
The fully electric Avants are ideal for working in confined spaces and on construction sites that have strict limits on noise and emissions.

UK-First Quarry Autonomous Innovation Unveiled in Devon
The official UK launch of an autonomous ADT designed to help future proof the effectiveness and competitiveness of quarrying operations within the minerals and aggregates industry took place recently. The development of autonomous driving capability opens the door to a range of operational efficiency, safety, environmental and employee benefits to underpin the sector going forward.
The UK-first project was initially conceptualised by Chepstow Plant International (CPI) and Bell Equipment following long-term trials between Bell Equipment and technology platform specialist, xtonomy.
CPI identified Sibelco, a long-term valued strategic customer, as the ideal partner to bring the project to reality in a live-working quarry environment. Collectively, the four key stakeholders have collaborated to develop and launch an innovative quarry transportation proposition that has its eyes on the future.
AI-inspired answer unveiled
The launch event for the venture was held at Sibelco’s china-clay Cornwood quarry in Devon, with key industry guests invited to witness a full demonstration of the new autonomous solution within a working quarry setting.
Interactive presentations highlighted innovative onboard hardware and software technologies, including robust radar sensors, high-precision GPS, multi-channel communication systems and on-board processing hardware. They have been incorporated by xtonomy into a standard B40E dump truck to create an AutonomousReady drive by wire B40E solution.
As a result, the combination offers true and safe autonomy with a resilient navigation system that dynamically plans ADT paths and predictively controls the vehicle around the entire quarry site.
A raft of benefits for the sector
Among the key objectives with this pilot scheme will be to demonstrate the potential to reduce vehicular incidents and subsequent accidents as well as upskilling then the existing workforce to further support the future of quarry operations.
Operational efficiencies will be enhanced as the autonomous ADTs are able to operate for longer periods during the working day, deliver highly accurate tipping results, and ensure that the existing quarry shift patterns can be tailored to improve productivity. Further benefits will be available thanks to improved component life and reduced wear and tear on the Bell B40E dump truck, leading to improved asset availability for the quarry.
Supporting sustainability
Environmental advantages will also be leveraged through the AI-enabled transformation. With enhanced driving accuracy and efficiency across the quarry, less fuel will be consumed, helping to ensure reductions in carbon emissions damage because of a quarry’s daily activities.
To further enhance the autonomous ADTs impact on the environment, the Bell B40E uses HVO instead of diesel. This pushes the machine to as near to ‘carbonneutral’ as currently possible within the quarry and mining sector.
Launch of new autonomous and operationally efficient transport blueprint for the quarry and mining sector takes place in Devon.
Collaborative project between four companies transforms standard Bell B40E dumptruck (ADT) into dynamic and all-new autonomousready drive by wire B40E solution.
Next generation innovation delivers a raft of commercial, operational, environmental and workforce skills benefits for the UK Minerals and Aggregates industry.

NEW MIDLANDS ASPHALT PLANT RISES TO THE SURFACE
AGGREGATE INDUSTRIES HAS OPENED A BRAND NEW ASPHALT PLANT TO SERVE STAFFORDSHIRE AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS AS PART OF A £9M INVESTMENT.
The Cauldon Low plant in the Staffordshire Moorlands is based next to the company’s existing Cauldon Low Quarry, which will serve the plant with materials.
The investment is the first new asphalt plant to be built by the company since 2013 and it will provide asphalt for ongoing road maintenance and infrastructure projects across Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and the M6 corridor.
Specialist plant supplier Ammann was commissioned to install its Ammann ABP 240 Universal Asphalt-Mixing Plant which can produce 240 tonnes of asphalt an hour. It is hoped once at full capacity the plant will be capable of producing more than 250,000 tonnes a year.
As well as the mixing plant and control room, the site has four bitumen tanks and a range of open and covered materials storage bays with a direct feed into the plant via conveyors. An on-site laboratory is under construction and will provide technical support and testing facilities for products.
The new plant also has the ability to accommodate high volumes of RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) which can be reused into new products and supply of stone from the adjacent quarry will reduce lorry movements and carbon emissions.
Importantly, the inbuilt systems and processes are highly energy efficient resulting in a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions when compared to a traditional asphalt plant, and the latest technology is in place to reduce noise, dust and odours.
Thomas Edgcumbe, Managing Director for Aggregate Industries’ Surfacing Solutions division, said: “We’re really proud to be investing in this brand new facility to serve our customers with a range of base, binder and surface course products across Staffordshire and the surrounding areas.
“It will be a real asset to the many projects in that region whether they be National Highways or local authority led.
“The benefits of a new plant and stateof-the-art equipment are immediately evident and very much centred on
reliability and efficiency. From surety of supply from our adjacent quarry, which also means less incoming deliveries, to reduced carbon emissions due to the technology utilised and the high volume of RAP we can accommodate going forward, it all adds up to a more efficient and effective operation which will benefit our customers.
“We are also looking forward to being part of the wider community and have a number of projects we will be contributing towards to support local good causes.”
The facility has completed its final testing and commissioning phase and is now fully open for business.
