The industry supports ukraine The first few months of 2022 have consisted of highs and lows, both for the UK construction industry and on a global level. The biggest global news is, of course, the current invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Much of the focus of many UK companies has been to aid the relief efforts for Ukrainians in this immensely difficult time. As a result of Morris Leslie's involvement in the Ukraine Relief Effort, the second part of Rachel Lambert's interview The Making of Morris Leslie will not be published this issue, but hopefully in the June 2022 edition of Plant Planet. More local impacts include the introduction of Red Diesel Legislation by the UK Government from April 1st 2022, which will have a major impact on the UK construction industry (read our article on page 46). As always, this issue is packed with the latest plant machinery developments from across the industry. From Electrification at the EHS (page 40); to the success of the world's first electric piling rig (page 35); to the use of technology from one of the industry's fastest growing names, Magni TH (page 52).

Introducing McCloskey Environmental and the ES-250 & ESS-300 Mobile Shredders
McCLOSKEY
Environmental, a leading provider of smarter equipment to the recycling industry across the globe, announced their launch in the UK with introduction of two new mobile shredders, the dual-shaft ES-250 and single-shaft ESS-300; both tracked primary shredders are capable of effectively and reliably shredding virtually any type of material. These high torque, primary shredders are designed to reliably and effectively meet the needs of plants where the incoming materials vary greatly in size, composition and shred difficulty. Applications include, but are not limited to: bulky industrial waste, C&D, MSW, wood/green waste, scrap metal, as well as landfill mining/reclaiming. The ES-250 and ESS-300 have stated capacities of up to 100TPH and 60TPH respectively, offering cost effective shredding with one of lowest operating costs per tonne. Available from McCloskey Equipment, the McCloskey Environmental ES-250 and ESS300 Mobile Shredders join the existing range of McCloskey products, including crushers, screeners, trommels and stackers, renowned globally for their proven performance. McCloskey Equipment has already supplied several of these new heavy duty shredders into various applications across the UK, including industrial and commercial waste, stump clearance, MSW and waste wood, offering a wealth of experience from the waste and recycling sector to support customer requirements.
Latest News
At the heart of the machines are heavy duty, rotating fixed knives, fixed on dual shafts that run asynchronously in both directions in the ES-250, keeping material constantly moving, preventing bridging and maximise shredding efficiency. As standard, the machine is fitted with an eight knife Samurai cutting table, producing sub-300mm grain. Also available are 10 and 12 knife options for different end particle sizes. In the ESS-300, the single, hydraulically driven shaft processes material above a replaceable mesh, allowing the machine to perform to a number of different specifications of output material, with varying piece size. With a hydraulicoperated side opening on the chamber, meshes can be changed quickly and efficiently.
Powered by a Volvo PENTA Stage V diesel engine, the machines comply with emission requirements. As standard, both the ES-250 and ESS300 come with a Gauss overband magnet and wireless remote control, with options available for hopper dust suppression, hopper mounted camera with a wireless monitor and rubber track pads. Tim Watson of McCloskey Equipment, commented; “We are proud to bring the new McCloskey Environmental range to the UK; both the ES-250 and ESS-300 Mobile Shredders are formidable machines, capable of shredding large
volumes of waste with low processing costs. It has been designed and built with over 30 years’ experience of shredding technology and everyone at McCloskey is sure this will quickly become the recognised brand leader. We are pleased to have delivered some of the first examples of these machines into the UK.” For further information, visit mccloskeyequipment.co.uk, call +44 (0)1235 832407 and email sales@mccloskeyequipment.co.uk. MHM Group’s eco alternatives hit the mark at the Executive Show DEVELOPING
eco-friendly equipment alternatives for the construction and plant hire sectors has paid off in spades for innovative Sales & Rehire company MHM Group, as it achieved a record number of enquiries at the Executive Hire Show.
MHM Eco, part of the MHM Group, made its first-ever appearance at the Executive Hire Show after its launch in January 2022. Its eco range offers low emission and innovative products that emit zero or reduced carbon and can be powered by renewable fuel sources. After a two-year break, the Executive Hire Show returned in early February at the Coventry Building Society Arena. A total of 2,751 visitors from the hire sector attended the event, looking to expand their fleets with new products and discover the latest innovations and launches from the diverse range of exhibitors at the show.
14 • April 2022 • Plant Planet
One of the many products MHM exhibited at the show was the solar hybrid gen MGTP 20 SHG-5 - a 20 kVA combined solar, battery and diesel generator with a user-friendly, complete automatic self-charging hybrid system. In addition, MHM launched two new products in Coventry including the Ultra-Silent Event Ready range and the Pressure Washer Water Bowser which were showcased before their official launch in Spring 2022. MHM Group Managing Director Matt Llewellyn said: “The Executive Hire Show was a rewarding experience for the MHM Group. It was great to be back and interacting with people following the postponement of the show in 2021. “We were able to showcase our Eco brand and demonstrate MHM’s commitment to pushing the hire industry to become greener, as well as look to alternative methods of energy to power plant equipment across the UK. We have and will continue to increase our sustainable hire fleet
and promote products that improve energy efficiency and lower emissions as part of a drive towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. These products are available to purchase or rehire from MHM Group” Matt added “We were thrilled to sponsor the ‘Innovation Trail: ECO Live’ stage which was presented by construction industry specialist Peter Haddock. The stage explored new power options and introduced technologies that improved safety, security and productivity in the workplace. Boasting a unique design working with zero CO2 emissions, noise levels and fuel consumption, MHM’s Street-Lite model also featured at the Innovation Trail and continues to be a popular choice among clients. “We are delighted with the success of the show and the number of enquiries we had from the event. The whole MHM Group team have done themselves proud from start to finish, set up to breakdown.”

MEWP auction to support mental health in the construction industry MANY
of us in the construction industry are becoming increasingly aware of the problem of mental health issues in our community. Poor mental health takes many forms, but the stark statistics from the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity show that two construction workers take their own lives every day. Shocked by these alarming facts, Vicki Allen, managing director of International Platforms, has just announced a brand-new initiative to help support the construction community and their families.
Vikki Allen, Managing director of International Platforms 16 • April 2022 • Plant Planet
In what could be an industry first, Vicki and the team at International Platforms are auctioning a MEWP online and donating the entire proceeds to The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.
The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is the only one that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community and their families. A crucial element of its strategy is to provide a wide range of free and widely available pro-active resources to support the industry. Vicki explained: “I am fortunate to know a lot of people in the construction industry from working for almost 20 years in the access platform business. Unfortunately, I have become increasingly aware of the mental health problems some are having and had also heard about the good work the Lighthouse Club does. I decided the best way to help was to do something we are good at – selling a used MEWP - and then donating all the proceeds to the Charity! “To get the best possible price and
contribute the most we can, I decided to do an online auction. Once I had the idea, I got out my address book and made a few calls to other industry experts who wanted to help. With the generous support of Genie, PAS Powered Access Services, Hire Safe Solutions and Avalon Metal Coatings I bought an eight-yearold Genie GS2632 electric scissor lift and organised for it to be fully refurbished and serviced including a full repaint and new batteries, tyres and steps amongst numerous other parts. It’s a great indoor access platform and has non marking tyres making it ideal for second fix construction work, warehousing, cleaning jobs, electrical work, facilities management and stock taking. “Anyone interested in bidding for this machine can, if they win, be confident of getting a useful piece of equipment while supporting a very worthwhile cause.”
Vicki says the International Platforms team is hoping to raise at least £5000 for the charity that provides a 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline which offers a range of free and confidential support, complemented by their free Self Support App.
Their latest campaign, Help Inside the Hard Hat, aims to raise awareness of mental health issues in the construction industry and you can join the campaign for better mental health by downloading free resources and site hoardings artwork from their website.
Their free text HARDHAT to 85258 service provides yet another route to support, along with their Lighthouse Beacons who offer a safe space for people to share concerns.
Find out more at www. lighthouseclub.org
■
The charity also offers a variety of free construction-focussed training programmes ranging from hour long interactive wellbeing sessions through to the MHFA England approved Mental Health First Aider course.
The Genie GS2632 electric scissor lift before and During refirbishment
Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction industry Charity said, "We are delighted that International Platforms have chosen to support us in this way and hope that the industry will get behind the auction and help then reach some dizzy heights with their fundraising!" To place a bid, visit the International Platforms website; internationalplatforms.co.uk/auction where bidders can read about the machine, see the latest price and add their own bid. All the t&cs are there too – and designed to be as straight forward as possible. For a closer inspection, this special machine will be on show at the International Platforms stand (315) at Vertikal Days on 11th and 12th May, coincidentally Mental Health Awareness Week whose theme this year is loneliness.

could a lowemissions construction site look like, and how easy is it to achieve? In this article, we have a rundown of what you might find on a site looking to be environmentally friendly, ranging from construction plant and worker welfare, to keeping the site lit and powered. the industry in a drive towards lower emissions, and with the innovation of companies like GGR, going diesel-free is increasingly easy. As part of the new, cleaner era in the materials handling industry, the GGR 6.26 Electric telehandler does not produce any CO2 emissions. The standard 300Ah battery boasts an uptime of up to 6 hours. The GGR Electric Telehandler is ideal for use in closed or environmentally sensitive environments, with potential to serve a wide range of industries including warehousing, logistics,
manufacturing, recycling, and cold storage. However, whilst electrifying plant is a significant step, the construction site would not exist without the operators running the equipment – yet accommodating workers on site can result in significant energy consumption and emissions. Genquip Groundhog’s Eco-Fusion welfare units do not compromise on comfort, but tackle emissions by a range of tactics. The range features various units to match the
required specifications of the site. The GPO500 unit utilises intelligent solar technology, which charges the 12V battery through panels, and the battery is powerful enough to run without a generator. In the event that the solar power is not enough, the diesel generator works as backup when required, allowing the unit to continue functioning through all conditions. The unit features recycled materials for flooring and 12V LED lighting, as well as power to charge any devices on board. EcoFusion units utilise recirculating toilets and pedal basins, resulting in less water consumed. With fuel costs and CO2 emissions both reduced by up to 80%, the environmental benefits to the Eco Fusion units are clear, and do not require any compromise on worker comfort to achieve a real reduction to carbon emissions. Alongside more eco-friendly welfare, behavioural and supervisory changes are essential to ensuring an efficient site – the organisation of fleet to reduce uptimes is vital to reducing energy use. Furthermore, it is no secret that construction produces a significant amount of waste, which is why proper disposal of materials, both from the site and welfare units, is essential to reduce environmental pollution. A construction site could not function in the dark, but is there an environmentally conscious way to keep the site illuminated? Trime provides flexible lighting solutions, ranging from solar, to fully-battery operated and hybrid. Green Power Systems provide electrical battery storage solutions across multiple industries including construction, partnering with Xelectrix Power to distribute their Power Box in the UK and Ireland, which can bring multiple benefits for the construction site. The Power Box connects existing power sources and electrical infrastructure to supply these sources with additional electricity through the Power Box on-board inverter. This modular solution is expandable, with single units with storage up to 140 kWh and above, with the possibility of connecting certain models together to expand both power and storage capacities. On a construction site, the

Power Box lowers the kW peaks of power into facilities, thereby reducing running costs. For diesel generators, it stabilises the load curve, consequently reducing the consumption of fuel. At peak times, the Power Box can supplement power from other sources, and it can communicate with a generator to switch it on and off at preprogrammed loads, which also saves fuel. Together with Xelectrix technology, Green Power Systems are bringing energy innovation to the UK construction site. Whilst a completely emissions-free site may be difficult to achieve for many, the above solutions allow us to visualise changes that can add up to significant reductions in emissions. Every corner of the construction site has the potential to become more energy-efficient and less polluting.

Six months on site: the world’s first electric piling rig deemed a success Hannah Bounford unpacks the first six months on site for Junttan’s PMx2e electric pile driving rig and what’s in store for the future of the electric range.
THE
construction industry is looking to a more sustainable future, with cleaner and greener solutions being implemented across the world. At the heart of this movement is battery powered construction plant and machinery. With the latest advancements in lithium-ion battery technology, even large construction plant can be battery-powered. In October 2021, Finnish company Junttan premiered the world’s first electric pile driving rig. Now, six months on, Plant Planet take a look at how
the PMx2e has been performing on site. The PMx2e has an average working weight of 68,000kg and can handle piles up to 20m in length. The powerful machine is powered by a detachable two battery system - each 396kw battery pack can power the machine for an average of 6.5 - 7 hours use. The detachable battery system allows for charging via a normal 63A mains outlet utilizing an external CCS2 charging unit, meaning that the packs can be charged easily overnight or during the day, if necessary. Furthermore, the same system supports quick
charging with up to 250Kw, allowing for more possibilities for charging opportunities. Junttan have been researching and developing the PMx2e for the past four years. In October 2021, CEO Pasi Poranen stated: “This new electric pile driving rig demonstrates Junttan’s commitment to helping our customers build a more sustainable future around the world,” adding, “We are bringing the future replacement of a diesel engine deep foundation machine to the market. The PMx2e will empower our clients by massively reducing their CO2 emissions and environmental footprint.” →

The PMx2e On one of its first jobsites
→ The first client to take a step into Junttan’s more sustainable future was one of Europe’s premier contracting firms, Per Aarsleff A/F, and its Swedish subsidiary Aarsleff Ground Engineering AB. From the start, Junttan and Aarsleff formed an alliance, known as “Junttan x Aarsleff”, working together with almost 200 years of combined expertise to improve sustainability without restrictions in performance or application. The PMx2e was introduced up close and in action in Sweden on 26th October 2021. Since then, the PMx2e has been exceeding the expectations of Junttan’s clients. This was evidenced from its first use on site. Fleet manager Morgan Sjögren, of Aarsleff Ground Engineering, commented, “The first job has been a positive experience. The rig has been working well, with less noise, and the battery capacity has met all the expectations.”
This job involved installing 176 joined piles down to about 40 metres for the construction of the New Life Science Cluster, a project with the end goal of 100,000 square meters for innovative workspaces next to the E6 in Mölndal. Following the completion of the machines part in this project, the PMx2e was moved to its second job site in the Hagaborg area, Sweden, where it was able to work from 7am until 7pm using only a single battery pack, with workers utilising quick charging of the pack during lunch and coffee breaks.
consumption has been in line with initial estimations. Junttan Sales Director, Ate Konkka told Plant Planet: “Output, energy consumption and usability of the rig has been monitored very thoroughly during the six months period and, on average, energy consumption is measured to between 40-50kWh. Typically, the customer has been able to operate 6.5-7 hours with a single charge and one battery pack, and
“The first job has been a positive experience. The rig has been working well, with less noise, and the battery capacity has met all the expectations.”
As the world’s first batterypowered electric piling rig, the PMx2e has been closely scrutinised over its first six months on site. In March 2022, Junttan confirmed with Plant Planet that energy

Glenn has been operating the PMx2e on site: “I like it as much as the last one I’ve driven, which was a Junttan PMx22, there is no difference between them except that you need to charge the battery-powered one.” Reflecting on the best feature of the machine Glenn said, “The PMx2e is more distinctive because it has an electric motor, there is better and more direct power compared to a
six months on site diesel-powered one which needs some time to get full power.” On the battery pack, Glenn commented: “It’s very easy to change the battery, just unplug it and then use a wheel loader or the rig itself to fit the new battery. There was a bit of a hassle with charging the battery in the beginning, there were some restarts due to error codes, but that was the software and Junttan helped us troubleshoot that. But lately, it has been working fine.” Adding that the battery pack will last a full day, “it depends a bit on the type of piling and whether it is more sluggish to drive. On the days when it’s been a little slower to drive the piles, we’ve charged

the batteries during breaks and lunch and made it through a full workday (from 7 am to 7 pm).” This feedback is particularly optimistic as Ate Konkka shared with Plant Planet that the PMx2e is the first, but certainly not the last battery powered electric piling rig in their eJunttan portfolio; the next PMx2e pile driving rigs are already on the assembly line. In the future, Junttan will be widening the selection of eJunttan models, enabling electric versions of the PMx24 and PMx25 pile driving rigs. Junttan is also heavily investing in completely new electric rig generation of models that are currently being developed. Red Diesel Legislation
Red Diesel Legislation: What’s in place from april 1st 2022 Kate Hutchison delves into the legislation being put in place and the reaction from the Construction Plant Sector 46 • April 2022 • Plant Planet
FROM
the 1st of April 2022, it will no longer be legal to use rebated diesel (known as red diesel) and rebated biofuels in plant and machinery being used for construction work and instead, tanks must be filled with white diesel or alternative duty paid biofuels. While many are hoping that this decision will be deferred, here are the changes that the industry should be prepared for. This new legislation concerning the entitlement to red diesel was made when the UK became the first major economy in the world to pass laws guaranteeing an end to its contribution to global warming by 2050, in hopes of bringing all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. At Budget 2020, the government announced that it would remove the entitlement to use red diesel and rebated biodiesel from most sectors from April 2022, in order to meet climate change and air quality targets, with the hope that removing red diesel will promote energy efficiency, as well as the use of alternative, cleaner fuels.
The government hope that removing red diesel will promote energy efficiency Red diesel is diesel used in the majority of the construction industry, mainly for off-road purposes such as to power bulldozers, cranes, and drills for oil extraction. It accounts for around 15% of all the diesel used in the UK and is responsible for almost 14 →

Other fuels also affected by these restrictions include: • rebated diesel • rebated Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) • rebated biodiesel and bioblend • kerosene taxed at the rebated diesel rate • fuel substitutes However, while this legislation applies to most of the construction industry, there are some exemptions surrounding when it is legal to use red diesel. The following sectors will still be able to continue to rebated fuel: • agriculture • horticulture • fish farming • forestry • rail • non-commercial heating Rebated fuel can also be used for accepted purposes in: • agricultural vehicles • special vehicles – see a) below • unlicensed vehicles • certain machines and appliances a) Special vehicles: A special vehicle is a vehicle designed, constructed, and used as set out in Part 4 of Schedule 1 to the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, but without any weight restrictions. Special vehicles include: • digging machines • mobile cranes • mobile pumping vehicles

• work trucks • road rollers While many are affected with the practicality if this new legislation, there are also financial implications to be considered. Red diesel (gas oil) attracts a rebate of 46.81 pence per litre (ppl), giving an effective duty rate of 11.14ppl. Meanwhile, white diesel (DERV) has no rebate, creating a duty rate of 57.95 ppl, resulting in a final switch expense of an additional 46.81 pence per litre used. Red diesel contains a red dye and other chemical markers to indicate that it is rebated diesel and has therefore been subject to less fuel duty than white diesel. The red
marker is the identifier that allows HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to check whether the fuel is being used illegally, who have advised the likelihood of on-site spot checks with monetary fines handed out for non-compliance. While the new legislation comes into play on the April 1st 2022, it is worth noting that operators are not expected to flush out fuel tanks of red diesel in advance of this date, but instead must not refill fuel tanks with red diesel from this date onwards, and any excess fuel in storage tanks must be disposed of
properly or given to those entitled to use it (such as the agricultural sector). Ahead of these changes, it is advised that businesses should keep evidence of any red diesel that was put in before the legislation came into play to avoid fines.

Magni TH
MAGNI TH: “Our Customers are at the Heart of our Brand” This month, Editor Hannah Bounford sits down with Alex White, Sales and Operations Director of Magni Telehandlers UK Ltd to learn more about the company.

has been four years since Italian manufacturer Magni Telescopic Handlers established their English branch in Poole, Dorset. Since then, Sales and Operations Director Alex White has been at the helm of the company, overseeing the presence of the brand and managing sales and services in the UK. Those few short years have seen a few potential stumbling blocks for the branch, namely Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, when speaking with him, it appears that Alex and by extension, the Magni Group as a whole, have navigated these obstacles with agility to cement themselves as a global operator favourite.
Magni first launched thier own range of machinery to the public in April 2013 at Bauma Riccardo Magni set up the first Magni Telescopic Handlers factory only ten years ago in 2012. Born out of a joint venture with Manitou Group, Magni first launched their own range of machinery to the public in April 2013 at Bauma. This initial range consisted of two models: one RTH Rotational telehandler and one HTH heavy capacity telehandler. Following this, Magni Telescopic Handlers were distributed within the UK by materials handling specialists Forkway Group until 2017. The following year, the company decided to set up a direct establishment in the UK, bringing in Alex to spearhead the UK operation. Alex indicates that the rapid success of Magni both in the UK and globally is “down to a few core values” that weave through the operations of the company. The most prominent →

Magni TH → of these is the company’s use of technology, which Magni have invested heavily in, from the manufacturing process to product diagnostics on site. The upshot of this, Alex explains, is that “in essence, we can develop a product from white paper to production line in as little as six months”. He continues, “We’re more akin to an F1 factory than a construction machinery factory, as everything is designed and tested electronically”. Furthermore, each machine produced by Magni is full production specifications straight off the production line. Alex concedes that this was a gamble, but that it set Magni up for growth. Another factor acting as the catalyst for Magni’s swift growth is an intuitive product design process. “The company is clever about its products” Alex says, “There’s a commonality between the machines. We wanted each machine to feel the same whether you’re in a

We introduced a single display screen into the cab and, apart from becoming larger and a higher resolution, the idea behind it has remained the same. That was to remove the dashboard, allowing for a floor-to-ceiling windscreen. It also means that where in other machines you might have 50 switches; our cabs have five.” Alongside Magni’s Combi-Touch System display screen, the technology used by Magni allowed them to decrease the number of wires used →

lack of training, or lack of feedback from the machine itself.” To remedy this, the intuitive screen display has the capability to display over 100 error messages and 100’s of alarm diagnostic codes. On top of this, UK or Italy based engineers can view each machine’s systems to see exactly what an operator’s problem might be. As Alex puts it, “All manufacturers focus on producing sophisticated and safe machines, but ours take the guesswork out. It also means the only thing an engineer requires to calibrate the machine is a spirit level.”
“Where other companies have filled their order books into next year, we have the capacity to deliver machines this year.” Another core value that weaves throughout the company, working hand in hand with Magni’s investment in technology, is the customer-centric approach to both new machine sales and aftersales care. Alex says, “We noticed that a lot of machine downtime is due to operator error, either because of a

Despite the possible problems posed by Brexit and the Covid-19 Pandemic, Magni have taken measures to establish themselves as an operator favourite. Alex told me, “When things slowed down for everyone a couple of years ago, Magni took a gamble and increased its order of components. The gamble has really paid off. Where other companies have filled their order books into next year, we have the capacity to deliver machines this year.” Magni’s standing as an industry favourite is evidenced in their most recent accolade. In March 2022, the RTH 6.51 was awarded the Innovative Product Award Silver Award from American publication Rental Equipment Register. At the time, Filippo Lavelli, CEO of US
operations for Magni commented: “We have been able to show to the market, to the end user, and potential dealer what this machine can do compared to the conventional telehandler. So, the reaction from the market has been amazingly good. They start appreciating the versatility of the machine, and, with all the attachments, what they can do with one unique machine.” Alex echoed Filippo’s comments, adding: “The RTH 6.51 has been incredibly successful in the states. Mainly because it takes up less space than a traditional crane. In some states, as well as owning property, people can own air rights to the space above properties which can cause complications. Using a ROTO as opposed to a crane means that you’re not invading other people’s property when you work.”

The ROTO telehandler has a maximum lifting capacity of 6 tonnes, an impressive maximum lifting height of 51 meters, and a maximum reach of 34.5 meters. The lifting height of the machine has earned it another accolade: Magni are the world record holder for highest rotating telescopic handler in the world!
At the heart of this world record holding, award winning company, is an undisputed customercentric approach. Magni is, at the end of the day, a family owned and operated Plant Planet visited the Magni business. Despite the rapid growth Telescopic Handlers UK headquarters of the nine-year-old company,
Magni aims to maintain the ethos to build machinery to the highest quality, ensuring that customers are at the heart of the brand. As for what’s next for Magni Telescopic Handlers UK, Alex reveals: “The group is always working. In the UK, our intention is to expand and grow with new partners, building a UK dealer network. Of course, Covid has slowed our plans but we’re never sitting still. You can expect to see new products launched at Bauma 2022; we’ll be expanding across all our product ranges.”

L Lynch: Inspiring the industry
L Lynch: Inspiring the industry In the first of a two-part feature, Rachel Lambert chats to Merrill and Rob Lynch, Directors of L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage. The two brothers talk candidly about the company that was founded by their father over 40 years ago, and reveal more about its compassionate culture and its ambitious sustainability goals for the future.

are companies that say ‘they can do’ and companies that ‘do as they say’. L Lynch Plant Hire and Haulage definitely falls into the latter. Hugely benevolent, the company is involved in many charitable initiatives and community projects, with a strong set of core values that reverberates throughout the entire Lynch team. Lynch is a customer focused company in which “people come first and foremost”. It is also a company that is trailblazing the industry with its ambitious strategy to become net zero carbon by 2040. The Lynch family business that was established by Liam Lynch in 1980 has come a long way over the last 40 years. It currently employs over 900 people, across four (soon to become five) key depots with a customer base that spans the UK. With its head office in Hemel Hempstead, L Lynch Plant Hire and Haulage also has depots in Bridgwater, Wigan, Rushden as well as a new depot in Birmingham which is scheduled to open early autumn. Lynch is now one of the most dynamic and high-profile names in the plant hire industry, providing operated

and self-drive plant hire, as well as haulage and transport services to the construction sector. And it is one that is on target to reach over £100 million turnover towards the end of this year, with a fleet investment in the region of £40 million, to ensure they keep their customers happy. Liam Lynch remains at the helm of the business as founder and managing director, with his two eldest sons, Merrill and Rob Lynch, both serving as directors. Merrill and Rob have taken time out of their busy schedules to talk to me for this Plant Planet interview. They are joined by their Head of Sustainability, Paul Lynch. (We should point out coincidentally shares the Lynch name, but is not a family member.) The brothers are inspired that their father is still as driven today, as he was when he first started the business over four decades ago. They appear to be following his lead. “Dad’s enthusiasm never ceases to amaze us. He has always been extremely ambitious and determined, so we are not all surprised by this. We are in the process of opening a new depot in Birmingham primarily to support the work we are doing for HS2, and Dad’s excitement is palpable. Dad has so much belief in where we are going, as a company. He is incredible. His enthusiasm for the business he started from nothing, all those years ago, never wanes,” says Merrill. Merrill and Rob also affectionately pay tribute to the incredible support from their late mother, Celia, who was an integral part of the Lynch family business. A director of the business, Celia was a much-loved, much respected member of the family and the company, who would always “light up a room”. Sadly, Celia passed away in 2010.
“One of the most amazing things about our parents, was their eagerness for both of us to learn all about the business. They gave us so many experiences from such an early age, knowing that we would succeed on some levels, and fail at others. It helped us build resilience, and knowing they believed in us, gave us our own sense of self-belief,” Rob adds. Self-belief is something that is pivotal to the success of Lynch, which is backed up with a set of core behaviours. “We want to drive self-confidence throughout our team. By encouraging and buildingup confidence, people show initiative, and stretch themselves. And that’s how people grow. That’s how we grew in this business, so we want all our people to be self-confident and energised.”
happen for you and support you every step of the way. They push you, but they also encourage you to develop your career, which opens up so many opportunities for career advancement. You could start as a fitter and end up a director if that is your goal.” Rob talks further about recruitment and the many opportunities at Lynch, explaining how the business nurtures potential talent, reeling off examples of career development within company. (When we spoke, Lynch had not long returned from Buckinghamshire Skills Show, held in support of National Careers Week.)
“There are so many opportunities for plant operators in this industry, and especially here at Lynch.”
They are open when they say, they only recruit ‘five star’ people for the business, wanting their team to be the best, or at a minimum, for recruits to have an ambition to be the best. “We are completely upfront about our expectations. From the outset, we make it clear to candidates that if they are not comfortable being in a high-achieving environment where excellence is the only option, then Lynch is not the place for them,” says Merrill. Paul (Lynch) who is also participating in our meeting, upholds this sentiment. He has worked for Lynch for eight years and says: “The Lynch family make it clear that you decide where you want to go in this business, and if you are ambitious, they will make it
“This type of event provides a golden opportunity to talk about apprenticeships in plant with young people, as well as their parents, or carers. We actively promote careers in the industry, not just to young people, but to others who seek change in their career path. Even if only a small percentage of people have a genuine interest in construction, the quality of conversation we can have with these individuals could be lifechanging,” says Rob. He is also keen to add: “There are so many opportunities for plant operators in this industry, and especially here at Lynch. I think operators don’t always get the credit they deserve in the industry, and all too often, come under criticism for jumping ship frequently. In any other industry, this would be accepted as something that happens. We are full of praise for what they do.” As a company that offers operated plant hire, and one that does it very →

Interview → successfully, the Lynch brothers are well placed to talk about the value of operators. We turn back the clock to how it started for the Lynch brothers, who share identical birthdays, a year apart. It is moving to see the respect they have for their parents and each other. Both say they never wanted, or considered doing anything else other than “working in the family business”, describing it as a “boyhood dream”. Liam and Celia were adamant that their sons should learn about every aspect of the business, and it wasn’t long before this grew into quite a family occasion, every Saturday. When I ask if they had any privileges in the company being the natural successors, Merrill laughs and says, “absolutely not, we had to earn our positions like any other person employed by the business.”
L Lynch: Inspiring the industry in the business which he joined at the age of 21, saying that just like his brother, “he gained experience in every area of the company, before becoming a director.” What comes over in abundance, is their shared enthusiasm for the business. They radiate passion for the company, and have a genuine loyalty to its customers, while also having huge respect for the people who work at Lynch. Merrill explains that when his father started the business, he instilled in his sons the importance of a ‘can-do’ attitude, focusing on the customer’s needs, to deliver the best possible service. He also quotes their father, Liam, who always says, “our people are our greatest asset”.
Respect is something we show our colleagues having done a great job, so we give them credit and celebrate together; and teamwork means we have a one team mentality with a lot of camaraderie to collectively make us the best plant hire and haulage company nationwide.” The way Merrill and Rob are conveying this, with so much enthusiasm and optimism, is energising and uplifting, that’s for sure. And, it is easy to see how this mindset is reaping results.
This proactive, forward-thinking behaviour is also driving a far greater change within the company. It has set itself an ambitious environmental strategy – ‘The Net Zero Carbon Strategy 2040’ - and is the first in the industry to launch such a It is a sentiment that is upheld with comprehensive zero-carbon roadmap. actions. ‘Can Do’ – ‘Passion’ – ‘Respect’ and ‘one team’ are core values that resonate through the entire customer journey. “Saturdays were spent checking levels, steam cleaning machines, and generally feeling very cold, but we loved every minute of it. I started working full-time at Lynch at the age of 19 and couldn’t have been more excited. We both had to work our way up the company ladder, and that meant getting experience in everything.” Merrill has experience out in the field as an operator and holds an HGV licence. He worked on hire desks before progressing to service manager, transport manager, operations manager, until eventually “earning his position as Operations Director”. We are not just about shiny new machines, it’s our people and our values that help us win business and succeed. We have a can-do, enthusiastic attitude. Passion, for us, is loving what we do, going that extra mile and getting it right first time.
Paul adds: “It’s easy to ‘talk the talk’ when it comes to climate change issues, but we wanted to set out our plans clearly, and act on them, to promote a culture of environmental change and to educate those around us. We’re focusing on our fleet, our depots and our supply chain. We want to be a role model for sustainability and environmental change for the entire industry.” →

→ Rob points out, “I would also say, that we want to be a completely open book with sustainability, and safety for that matter. We want to share ideas and help others for the greater good. whether that’s sustainability or safety. If others want to duplicate our strategy that’s fine, but success hinges on sincerity and commitment. Put it this way, the analogy is that our strategy shows the dance moves and our aim is to fill the dancefloor with lots of likeminded people in our industry to get to net-zero. The burning question is, can you dance?!” The Lynch Net Zero Carbon Strategy means replacing machinery with either battery or hydrogen powered alternatives, which of course is a fast-evolving market at the moment. Lynch is trialling both hydrogen and electric alternatives. Merrill explains that they see hydrogen as being the most logical source of power for larger equipment, but points out the challenges involved
The Eco Driver Scheme which L Lynch introduced in 2019 is already making a difference. “We’re not seeking any sort of competitive advantage and we don’t want to be secretive about innovation that could benefit us all. We simply want to be the most open business out there to help others get to the level that we all need to achieve our goals,

with ‘how to fuel a hydrogen machine on site’. Nonetheless, the team at Lynch are researching possible solutions. “I think we are still a little way off transitioning to hydrogen. Batteries can’t cope with the larger equipment. But, what we can do right now is to change our behaviour, by operating our existing plant better, with our existing operators. This in itself can make a significant difference to what we emit into the atmosphere,” says Merrill. This leads on to them discussing what they are doing to change ‘driver behaviour’. They are currently trying to reduce driver idling across sites by 30% for all their operated equipment, and their Eco Driver Scheme which they introduced in 2019 is already making a difference. “We have to win hearts and minds, to make people understand the
importance of it. We ask them to think about the future and imagine the world in which their children and grandchildren will grow up in if we just do nothing. So, to behave ‘better’, we have to bring the reality of the situation home to them. We must find a better way of doing things, which involves collaboration and leadership,” says Rob.

Lynch’s Net Zero Carbon Strategy 2040 extends beyond machinery Paperless systems have also been introduced through the digitisation of many processes. They are also about to rollout a tree replacement programme, with Lynch pledging to plant a tree for every machine it buys; a sustainable initiative that Rob Lynch has been working on. Hyundai Construction Equipment: Adding to a growing a-series range HYUNDAI
Construction Equipment is introducing a further two EU Stage V compliant A-Series crawler excavators, with the launch of the HX160A L and the HX180A L. These mid-weight machines are powered by the latest Cummins diesel engines, achieving Stage V emissions standards without the need for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Offering improved fuel consumption, the 16 and 18-tonne models deliver improved
operating speed and performance, with increased visibility and safety.
Total control Hyundai’s Electric Pump Independent Control (EPIC) system has been adopted, to make the most of the additional performance provided by the Cummins B4.5 diesel engine. Both excavators benefit from a 115kW (155hp) gross power output, with a robust 712Nm peak torque available at just 1,200rpm. Twin variable displacement hydraulic pumps deliver 160lpm of flow, providing the HX160A L and HX180A L with increased productivity when compared to

many competitor machines. Improved control of the engine output and the hydraulic system has resulted in increased fuel efficiency, with the excavators achieving a 5% efficiency gain against the previous HX Series when levelling and truck loading in P Mode. By optimising the design of the main control valve and hydraulic hose routing, Hyundai has also minimised energy losses within the system. A new Lifting Mode improves fine control and lift capability, reducing engine rpm, activating power boost and offering improved pump flow control. The machines are also offered with an optional Fine Swing Control, smoothing the movement of the boom at the start and stop of the swing movement. An Auto Safety Lock is offered as standard, preventing unintended operation

The operator can set boom-lift speed compared to swing speed, by activating and deactivating the boom priority function. Dipper arm in speed can also be fine-tuned, by activating and deactivating the arm regeneration function. It is now possible to save machine settings through the new Key On Init work mode, to apply the settings on engine start-up. The machine owner can also restrict operator access to some functions within the menu if required.
The standard monoboom length is 5,100mm and there are three dipper arms offered, at 2,200mm, 2,600mm and 3,100mm in length. These provide maximum digging reaches of up to 9,450mm and a maximum digging depth of 6,530mm. Alternatively, customers can choose a factory two-piece boom, offering a boom length of 5,100mm with arm lengths of 2,200mm and 2,600mm. Maximum digging reach with the two-piece boom is 9,110mm, while maximum digging depth is 5,690mm.

→ Single pedal straight travel is also available. Hyundai’s HX A Series excavators benefit from a host of state-of-theart digital connectivity technologies. This includes the proven standard Hi-MATE remote management system, that delivers the highest level of service connectivity and remote diagnostic ability. The Mobile Fleet App has been updated to allow fleet owners easy access to machine operating data, including economical usage, utilisation and fault code recognition. That Wi-Fi connectivity, using Miracast, allows the operator to use many of the functions of their smartphone, directly through the machine’s 8” infotainment screen. Drivers can operate their phones hands-free, listen to music directly from their smartphone and use a number of internet-based applications through the Miracast system.
Reduced Service Cost The excavators benefit from a revised cooling package layout that contributes to improved serviceability. Engine oil and oil filter change intervals have been extended from 500hrs to 800hrs, while the fuel filter and prefilter intervals are now double, at 1,000hrs. This contributes to reduced service and maintenance costs and a cut in planned downtime, improving productivity and utilisation for the customer. Optional Engine Connect Diagnostics (ECD), which is an integrated resource between Cummins and Hyundai, allows technicians and dealers to support customers with diagnostic reports and engine performance data. HCEDT Air also allows the customer to connect wirelessly through a smartphone or laptop on site.

The Valla V80R pick and carry crane has a maximum working height of 9m (SWL 2,000kg) and a maximum working radius of 5.5m (SWL 1,300kg). It is just 1400mm wide and 3790mm long, giving it a smaller footprint than a standard Mini car, and is just 1999mm high, allowing it to be moved into highly constrained spaces to carry out lifts. Thanks to the built-in flexibility of the Valla V range, Viridor has been able to specify a range of additional accessories and capabilities for its Valla V80R.
It has a powerful hydraulic winch and hook block, a counterbalance fork attachment with a SWL of 3t, and a wrap-around hydraulic luffing jib – luffing referring to its ability to move up and down. The 2.3m-long jib extends the crane’s radius to 7.5m at which point it can lift 750kg, and its tip height to 11.25m (SWL 1t). The jib has a maximum SWL of 3t, and extends the pick and carry crane’s lifting capabilities in environments where space above the load is limited. Viridor’s Valla V80R industrial mini crane also has an extending chassis and a front stabiliser to maximise lifting capacities across the crane lifting envelope. The Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre has an energy recovery facility (ERF) alongside the PRF. It will generate up to 307 Gigawatts per hour of electricity per year, enough energy to power the equivalent of 84,000 households and to process over 320,000 tonnes of material every year. www.hird.co.uk

consumption due to sticking injectors and wear.
Typical applications are construction equipment, airport vehicles and fork lift trucks. The product is formulated from recognised fuel additive components and should not void an engine manufacturer’s warranty. In fact, many engine manufacturers now recommend the use of upgrade additives.
It would be easy to conclude that the requirement to enhance fuel by using fuel additives is no longer necessary.
Filter Blocking Tendency Tests (IP 387)
However, it is very important to remember that biodiesel is used in all diesel with many unintended consequences for engine performance and maintenance.
The unintended consequences of biodiesel in fuel on engine performance and maintenance have been experienced by many of our customers with images and samples submitted for testing.
Detailed Description
Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) is a parameter that is part of the EN590 fuel standard applied during the winter months. The maximum value is 2.54 (no units).
exocet® Off Road Diesel Supreme is an advanced fuel additive designed to benefit both mineral diesel and biodiesel blends. It prevents deposit formation throughout the fuel delivery system, especially in the injectors and fuel pump, to keep the system clean and running at optimum performance. It also compensates for some of the deleterious effects of a higher FAME content (e.g. tendency for water pickup) and will prevent the agglomeration of biodiesel precipitates that can be the cause of filter blocking which results in fuel starvation in the engine.
A fuel sample causing severe fuel filter blocking in the field was tested for FBT with and without exocet fuel additives. The results are in the table below. The results show that the fuel causing
Our results demonstrate that a well formulated fuel additive, containing dispersants, will prevent agglomeration of precipitated FAME (biodiesel) particulates, keeping them small and dispersed in the fuel and able to flow through the fuel filters, thus maintaining equipment operability. Importantly, FAST’s fuel additives also contain a deposit control additive to protect fuel injectors and keep them clean. Exocet Off Road Diesel Supreme additive will treat and prevent filter blocking problems caused by precipitated biodiesel (FAME) particulates. FAST recommends the use of a 10μm fuel filter on all bulk storage tanks.

MOVING TOWARDS ELECTRIFICATION; THE CONCRETE COW: FOOD WASTE & THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY; & UK COUNCILS: DONE WITH DIESEL?
SUEZ Teesside carbon capture plans take a step forward SUEZ recycling and recovery UK’s plans to develop the UK’s first carbon capture and storage plant from energy-from-waste at Teesside took a step forward today after being identified as eligible to progress to the evaluation stage of Phase 2 of the Government’s Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage Cluster Sequencing Process. SUEZ first announced plans to develop a commercial scale carbon capture plant at its Tees Valley (Lines 1 and 2) facility at Teesside in November 2020 after signing a memorandum of understanding with BP. The original project envisaged capturing the carbon dioxide from the facility’s flue gas emissions and transporting this to a geological storage site beneath the North Sea. SUEZ’s plans were given a boost last autumn when the East Coast Cluster, which covers the Teesside and Humber areas, was selected by the Government as one of the UK’s first two low carbon industrial clusters to receive support for deploying carbon capture utilisation and storage at scale. The current Phase 2 process run by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), looks at the emitter projects within each of the low carbon industrial clusters, with energy-from-waste plants falling under the industrial model. SUEZ made two applications to BEIS to develop carbon capture plants at its Tees Valley (Lines 1 and 2) and Tees Valley (Line 3) energy-from-waste facilities and both have today been identified as eligible for support under the Government’s industrial business model. They now move forward to the evaluation stage. John Scanlon, Chief Executive Officer for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said: "At SUEZ we have a clear focus on reducing the carbon footprint of our customers’ waste. We’re investing in innovation at every stage, from ways to reduce the carbon content of the waste coming into our energy recovery facilities, such as our work on recycling flexible plastics at scale, through to capturing the carbon from flue gas emissions at the end of the process. "With a solid operational track record and the benefit of being located on the planned route of the pipeline that will transport CO2 from Teesside to the storage location, our facilities are ideally placed to become one of the UK’s first carbon capture from energy-from-waste projects." 88

Biffa’s Billion Bottle Milestone at £7m Flagship Sunderland Plant More than a billion plastic bottles and tubs have been recycled at Biffa’s £7 million flagship polymer plant in Sunderland in its first six months. Detergent and shampoo bottles, and ice cream and margarine tubs are among the 70 tonnes of postconsumer plastic packaging now recycled every day at the facility in Washington. The new plant opened last year and employs 35 people. The plastic is first processed at Biffa’s advanced sorting facilities across the UK, before being taken to Washington where it is cleaned and ground into flakes and sold to manufacturers across the UK and EU who turn it into everything from garden furniture and paint trays to

Other types of plastic, including milk and fizzy drinks bottles, which can be recycled back into foodgrade plastic, are handled at Biffa’s other polymer plants in Redcar and Seaham, also in the north-east, which employ a total of over 300 people. Since 2016, Biffa has invested

FUTURE WASTE
T
The 7th of March 2022 marked the start of the second annual Food Waste Action Week, organised by UK based charity Wrap. The aim? To create lasting change that will help deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving global food waste by 2030. It’s certainly a necessary cause, as the UK produces 9.5 million tonnes of food waste annually. Much of this ends up in landfill sites where it is slowly broken down into gasses which contribute significantly to global warming, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane. In order to combat this, waste management companies across the UK are looking to utilise our waste to create fuel. This month, Future Waste investigates the question: How can food waste be recycled? The process of converting food waste into bio methane is called anaerobic digestion (AD). AD is the breakdown of organic materials by micro-organisms in the absence of oxygen. AD technology is used to convert the mixture of Carbon Dioxide and Methane (known as biogas) produced in the process into green energy. The AD process can also produce bio-fertilisers, a second valuable resource that helps UK farmers enrich their soil.
AD PLANTS ARE SOMETIMES REFFERED TO AS CONCRETE COWS BECAUSE THE PROCESS MIMICS THE COW'S DIGESTIVE SYSTEM” Currently, there are over 600 active AD plants in the UK, with more in the planning stages of development. These plants are fed by waste from local farms and local councils’ collections, i.e., the organic waste from restaurants, commercial properties, and even our kitchens. According to the UK Government, in 2020, the total energy produced from AD was equivalent to 1021 tonnes of oil. Of the raw material (also known as feedstocks) that were used in AD plants in the 2019/2020 period, 29% comprised food waste. The remaining 71% consisted of manure, crops, and crop waste, among other raw material. In other words, food waste contributed to a significant amount of biofuel production in the UK. We are seeing an increasing number of councils around the UK adopting vehicles powered by renewables and electricity, as the traditional petrol and diesel vehicles face pressure to be replaced. The expulsion of particulates and carbon dioxide from diesel-powered exhausts has been affecting not only the climate, but also resulting in significant air and noise pollution in residential areas. A special report into electric refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) by Eunomia found that local authority RCVs emit 330 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent per year – a significant amount of emissions that could be reduced by investing in more pollution-free vehicles on the streets.

DONE WITH DIESEL? COUNCILS AROUND THE UK ARE MAKING WASTE COLLECTION ECO-FRIENDLY
Although electric and batterypowered vehicles are faced with the fundamental issue of the UK’s existing reliance on fossil fuels for electricity, even with the current UK grid, electric RCVs would produce significantly fewer emissions than their diesel counterparts. The most significant hurdle for widespread adoption is council budgeting, yet the demand for more electric RCVs is rising. Experts estimate that although the initial cost of purchase of eco-friendly RCVs is much higher, the lifetime operating cost including maintenance is the same, if not lower, than traditional dieselpowered waste collection trucks. This year, Exeter City Council is set to begin replacing their diesel-powered waste collection vehicles with a new, eco-friendly fleet, which will be powered by the new Marsh Barton → FUTURE WASTE

However, with most councils in the UK facing funding problems, how can we afford to prioritise replacing the still-functioning diesel vehicles? British firm Lunaz may have the answer. Lunaz has just revealed their first upcycled electric refuse vehicle, costing significantly less than a new electric RCV (which may set councils back over £500,000). The company specialising in converting existing petrol and diesel vehicles to electric has received a $200 million valuation following a round of funding, signalling that this method of electrification may garner increasingly more attention. Lunaz is planning to open a new facility to produce electric vehicles this year. The 210,000 square feet facility will house 300 technicians and engineers, who are planning to produce over 1,000 electric vehicles a year. The market’s explosive reaction to Lunaz, as well as the steep cost of new electric and hydrogenpowered vehicles both signify that in a circular economy, the road to more eco-friendly waste collection may lie in repurposing existing vehicles. in hopes of providing “a clear economic incentive for businesses to use recycled plastic in the manufacture of plastic packaging”, with a hope that this results in a greater demand for recycled materials, and as a result, encourage increased levels of recycling and collection
The Plastic Packaging tax will come into force on 1st April 2022 and will be charged at a rate of £200 per tonne. The tax is expected to impact an estimated 20,000 manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging, and those who manufacture or import ten or more tonnes of

with other parties and supply chains to ensure they are not at risk. Penalties will apply for failing to comply with relevant PPT requirements, with the government advising that businesses keep up to date records. Penalty fines will be applicable at the rate of £500, plus a further daily £40 penalty cost will be admitted, as well as any additional interest on late payments that will be applied as a result of non-compliance. Ultimately, the Plastic Packaging tax is looking to see a predicted increase in the use of recycled plastic in packaging, and as a result could see an increase of approximately 40% of recycled materials being used. This is equal to carbon savings of nearly 200,000 tonnes in 2022 to 2023, based on current carbon factors. Alongside this, the tax will look to create a drive for further development of recycling technologies in the industry.
