Trac360: the technology protecting your plant WE

don’t need to tell you that theft within the Plant and Construction industry is on the rise.

With the disbanding of PANIU and the establishment of The Opal ACE (Agricultural and Construction Equipment Unit) in 2019, it’s likely that all industries will be interested in the 2020-2021 statistics. With thieves savvier than ever before, in most cases a part of organised crime; they come prepared with signal jammers, tools to disconnect GPRS hardwired devices, and knowledge of how to rewire and counteract individual theft reducing measures. This leaves everyone feeling vulnerable, even if they’re going the extra mile in protecting their machinery.

What are you doing to protect your assets and reduce theft? Are you using every available method to increase your vehicle and asset security? How many of the Trac360 Ltd advised checklist can you tick? Of these options, tracking can be the most expensive, but it is also most effective in terms of overall use; and it doesn’t come close to the cost of stolen plant, expense of a replacement buy, or the cost of lost work. →

What might urban construction sites look like in 2030 – and what are the forces for change? Increased competition, the advent of new technology, and an ongoing drive for improved air quality are creating new challenges for city developers and construction firms. What’s the outlook for the coming decade and how can businesses find a crucial competitive edge? CEA member Perkins reports…

AFTER

a year of social restrictions that has seen many previously bustling cities fall empty, the evolution of urban life has come under increased debate. Despite this enforced transition, the majority of the global population continues to choose city life. With more than 55 percent of people living in urban areas, and the top 780 cities accounting for 60 percent of the world’s economic activity1, the trend for urbanisation shows no sign of decline.

24 • August 2021 • Plant Planet

In fact, according to a study by Oxford Economics2, urban construction is expected to grow 35 percent – or by $8 trillion – by 2030. The boom will be largely fuelled by relentless development in developing nations across Asia and Africa. And that’s good news for a construction sector that sometimes has the odds stacked against it. The challenges facing the construction industry have been building for some time; including poor productivity and profitability, rising costs, and the need to prepare for a digital future. But among the biggest obstacles is the need to cut emissions on construction sites,

particularly from construction machines. With building and construction responsible for 39 percent of the world’s carbon emissions, according to the World Green Building Council – combined with a push to reach net zero across many continents by 2050 – construction sites need to dramatically evolve.

The global picture on construction emissions Emission requirements for construction machinery depend on where in the world they are operated. Businesses delivering projects in the UK and Europe must meet the most highly

Latest news regulated standards of EU Stage V, while the U.S. EPA has Tier 4 Final emission standards. In the rest of the world, Japan and South Korea are committed to similarly high standards, followed by China, India and Brazil. Several other countries enforce equivalent standards. And while unregulated territories still exist, many are working to introduce standards in the near future. Emissions initiatives like these provide extra impetus for the construction industry to reduce its environmental impact as demand grows for making cities ever greener. “There is a clear green agenda imbuing the operations of most enterprises, and none more so than in construction – and the sector is making strides forward,” says Rob Oliver, chief executive of the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), a British trade association representing the construction equipment sector. “For example, while cement production has long been identified as a source of CO2 – estimated at some four percent of the total – technology is developing to address this. With construction equipment, too, there is likely to be a continuation of the good work already started.”

A vision for the future of urban construction sites Against this backdrop, urban construction sites and construction building work will look very different in the next 10 years.

According to a recent study by McKinsey3, construction projects will need to change due to a combination of “sustainability requirements, cost pressures, skills scarcity, new materials, new industrial approaches, digitization, and new breeds of players look to transform the value chain”. Clearly, the construction business will need to find ways to stay on pace with all these changes, and improve its competitiveness, productivity and profitability. Possible measures to achieve this include expanding into new industry segments, engaging staff in revenue generation, investing in technologies such as telematics to automate the management and modelling of projects, and boosting emissions performance and efficiency with a new breed of electric off-highway machines.

‘Wealth of opportunities’ for forward-thinking firms With relentless urbanisation set to continue, opportunities will exist for businesses willing to adapt to todays and tomorrow’s challenges. According to Oxford Economics2: “a pessimistic short-term outlook will be replaced by a wealth of opportunities in the next decade.” Alongside conventional projects to build homes, business premises, infrastructure, utilities and services for an increasing number of city dwellers, new construction projects in the form of larger $1bn+ megaprojects will also explode. Think industrial complexes and megacity developments, such as Al Maktoum International Airport in

Dubai or Jubail II in Saudi Arabia, which offer big rewards for firms ambitious enough to go after them. Taking advantage of these opportunities will require companies to be agile and innovative. Luckily, many global governments do offer grants and tax reliefs to provide construction firms with the incentive to meet future construction needs, with less risk. Depending on your territory, incentives may be available for using modern construction methods and technologies that bring safety benefits or support the green agenda. In many cases, benefits are also available for making machinery fleets greener. In Malta, for example, firms can access grants of up to 40 percent of the total cost of any low-emission site equipment they purchase4. But, of course, current market conditions and future prospects aren’t set in stone. “It is projected that two-thirds of the world’s population of 10 billion in 2050 will be city dwellers and they will all need somewhere to live within a secure and healthy environment,” says Rob. “However, there is debate about how the pandemic will affect future plans. Will today’s office blocks be tomorrow’s apartments? Will today’s retail outlets be tomorrow’s workshops as more people choose to work at home in non-urban locations in the more developed world?” →

Plant Planet • August 2021 • 25

Latest news Which Countries are leading the way on a new era of urban construction? In countries that have both the resources and motivation to transform urban construction, major change is already under way. “Certainly, there is a clear drive to nurture sustainable cities – and initiatives in Stockholm and Copenhagen show this,” says Rob. “Countries with the policy and funding to ‘go green’ will demand

high standards in construction. These should be the breeding grounds of innovation and early adoption of budding technology.” Rob believes the advent of new technologies and global drive for urban expansion means a bright future for construction and the off-highway industry. “There is a clear policy echo around the world, which is Build Back Better,” he says. “In the UK, U.S. and beyond there are twin drivers that will influence future policy after the virus emergency. First, construction produces jobs and

national wealth and, second, that climate change dictates we have to adopt the best technology and practices to reverse the change. Off-highway machines can play an important part in this future.” For construction companies, it seems vital to adjust to the changing environment, and reinvent themselves to take advantage of changes in the industry. By doing so they can meet the demands of their shareholders and planet – and protect their futures.

LiuGong’s New 95 Tonne Excavator, 995F, sets the new standard in mass excavation. THE

new 995F again proves that LiuGong are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to industrial design and smart engineering. With a strong design language that appeals to customers’ needs, this all-new excavator is a great example of LiuGong’s Tough Equipment for a Tough World promise. The New 995F is the result of thorough analysis of customer performance requirements and LiuGong’s extensive testing in demanding mining and quarry applications.

28 • August 2021 • Plant Planet

“The New 995F is the first model of our large excavator F-Series range and delivers the toughness and reliability you would expect from LiuGong. It’s tough but it also excels in controllability and comfort, so it is perfectly matched to the demands of customers and operators in the European market,” said Harry Mellor – Excavator Product Manager for LiuGong Europe. LiuGong are targeting the 995F at heavy-weight jobs in mining, quarrying and demolition where cost per tonne, reliability, operator safety and comfort are the key considerations. Powered by an 18.1-liter Perkins engine

producing 447kW of power with low engine speed and high torque, the 995F delivers class leading tear out forces. To further improve cycle times, operating precision and fuel efficiency, the 995F is equipped with 3 operating modes: Eco, Standard, and Power. 10 engine speeds allow the operator to balance power and efficiency to meet the application’s requirements. The 995F also features an Advanced Variable Electro-Hydraulic System, which adjusts the flow distribution according to the operating conditions. The 995F is no exception when it comes to LiuGong’s well-deserved reputation for toughness and is fully armed to face the toughest operating conditions. Its heavyduty, variable gauge undercarriage features high strength forged sprockets and large diameter idlers with thickened wearing layers. Deep profile double grouser track plates provide longevity and higher traction when travelling. The 995F also has a specially tailored Demolition Package version - 995FDM complete with bucket cylinder guard, swing open Level II FOPS

guard, plus rotation pipework and an attachment drain line. Justin Ffrench from J. Ffrench Ltd. in Bedfordshire, UK is clearly pleased with his first 995FDM. “Very impressed with the way this machine delivers. It’s got the power you want but with the controllability you need. It’s put together very well. I think LiuGong have a very credible machine here for heavy applications,” commented Justin Ffrench. With an all-new spacious cab design, the 995F provides excellent protection, visibility, and comfort. Storage for large drinks bottle, backpack, hard hat and a phone, all-round climate control and the fully adjustable

luxury heated seat creates the perfect operator environment. An 8” LCD touchscreen display with additional jog dial offers simple and intuitive access to all of the machine’s functions and key data. Howard Dale, Chairman of LiuGong Europe, is confident that LiuGong have given customers in the heavy-weight sector something to think about. “We see the launch of the New 995F as part of our commitment to add value to our customers’ businesses. With this new heavyweight model, we can now offer them a wider range of top quality, tough machines designed for Europe. The 995F is proof that we are not just listening to our customers, we are delivering for them too,” mentioned Dale.

UK Construction equipment sales were more than 70% above 2020 levels in the first half of the year RETAIL

sales of construction and earthmoving equipment showed further strong growth in June, and were 75% ahead of the levels seen in the same month last year, when sales were still recovering from the impact of the first lockdown. As a result, sales in Q2 were more than double the levels seen last year, and reached over 10,000 units during the quarter. For the first half of the year, sales were over 18,000 units, and are 73% ahead of the levels seen in the first half of last year. Comparisons with sales in earlier years indicate how buoyant the market has been in 2021, with sales are ahead of both 2018 (by 4%) and 2019 (+7%) in the first half of the year. Like many other industries, the sector is still experiencing supply chain shortages and price rises for many products and materials. High levels of equipment sales in the face of this demonstrate the underlying strength of current demand in the construction market.

30 • August 2021 • Plant Planet

The pattern of sales for the major equipment types in the first half of the year is shown in chart 2. This shows that the strongest growth in sales has been experienced by Telehandlers (for the construction industry), with sales more than double last year’s levels in the first six months. This is a welcome bounce back after showing the weakest performance amongst the major equipment types in 2020, when sales were over 40% below 2019 levels. Mini/midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes) have had the opposite experience, after being the strongest performing product last year. Sales in the first six months of this year have shown 58% growth compared with last year, and lag behind all the other major equipment types in % growth terms. However, Mini/ midi excavators remain the most popular equipment type by a significant margin. The construction equipment statistics exchange covers sales on a regional basis in the UK and N Ireland. The map shows the percentage differences for sales in the main regions in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period last year. This shows that sales have been strongest in the North West of England and in Scotland, where sales have been more than double the levels

seen in the first half of 2020. In contrast, weaker sales have been experienced in the West Midlands and Wales, where sales have been less than 35% above last year’s levels. Sales in the Republic of Ireland are also recorded in the statistics scheme, and like the UK, showed further strong growth in June. As a result, sales in Q2 were more than double last year’s levels, and in the first half of the year are 56% above sales in the same period last year. * The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

Can Demolition be the eco-Friendly option? Kate Hutchison explores the eco friendly side of the demolition industry

MANY

people question whether to demolish an existing structure, with the demolition sector possessing both advantages and disadvantages. On the surface, demolition appears to be harmful to the environment, with some arguing that it should be stopped altogether, and structures should be developed and renovated instead to further reduce carbon emissions. In some instances, demolition is unavoidable. This can be due to potential structural

safety hazards, including when toxic chemicals such as asbestos, mercury, or lead are found in the building. These toxic chemicals can cause irrevocable damage, leaving a structure to be beyond repair and demolition as the only solution. In order to resolve concerns around the demolition sector, the industry now looks at ways to improve and continue demolition with environmentally friendly practises. Demolition of buildings and other structures generates a

large volume of waste, and construction and demolition materials often contain heavy components. Materials such as concrete, brick and cement are the main components released after demolition takes place. Material recycling is just one example of eco-friendly practises that has been in place within the demolition industry for a long time. Materials that are salvaged from demolition sites are often reused in future projects. At present, 75% of construction and demolition waste in the EU is being landfilled. In the United Kingdom, the →

can demolition be eco-frienldly? • Topical Commentary disposal of construction waste accounts for more than 50% of overall landfill volumes. Debris from demolition sites can be salvaged and put to use in further projects. This debris can be crushed to a suitable size and once contaminants have been removed, these products can then be reused as valuable aggregate, which is vital for the production of concrete and also further prevents wasted materials and debris from ending up on landfills.

in the uk, the disposal of construction waste accounts for more than 50% of overall landfill volumes. Deconstruction is another method that the demolition sector has adapted in order to maintain more environmentally friendly practises. Deconstruction is a process which can take place before material recycling. This is the process of carefully dismantling buildings to salvage components for reuse and recycling. Deconstruction can be applied on several levels to salvage usable materials and significantly cut demolition and construction waste. Deconstruction has many benefits, which include maximizing the recovery of materials, conserving finite, old-growth forest resources and diverting demolition debris that otherwise would all be bound for disposal on landfill sites. The reuse of such materials results in fewer natural resources being harvested for use in new buildings, preserving trees that would potentially be cut down for wood, alongside other natural materials. →

Topical Commentary • can demolition be eco-frienldly? The demolition industry heavily relies on the use of heavy machinery and heavy-duty equipment in order to demolish such large structures. The key players in demolition sector have now adopted electric machinery in an attempt to lower the industry’s CO2 contribution. Companies such as Volvo, Caterpillar and Komatsu are just a few of the big players in the industry who have taken the plunge into electric machinery.

Electric machinery is not a completely new revelation; with the continued development and increasing popularity of electric cars, electric machinery is the next step forward and each come with many benefits. Most notably, electric equipment is a safer option for the environment, with such machinery producing zero or significantly reduced emissions. Electric equipment can also help drastically reduce the level of noise pollution and danger created by dieselpowered equipment.

Between recycling, decreasing the need for natural resources, and adopting electric machinery, the demolition industry is much more environmentally friendly than it may appear at first glance. The sector is actively taking charge to limit the environmental impact that comes alongside the process of demolishing large buildings and structures. There is still a long way to go before the industry can recycle a fully demolished building or structure, but the demolition industry is making proactive progress every day.

Rebecca Bryson: Country girl turned construction queen Rebecca Bryson is Commercial Director for BTE Plant Sales. She talks to Rachel Lambert about her impressive career achievements and the importance of “knowing your stuff” if you want to be taken seriously in the industry!

Bryson is, without doubt, a very driven individual. She has already achieved so much in her career, holding some highly responsible positions for manufacturers such as Kubota and JCB, before taking on her current role as Commercial Director for BTE Plant Sales.

Talking to her, I am not surprised. Rebecca is bubbly, enthusiastic and has a real zest for success. It quickly becomes clear that she has built-up a great deal of knowledge about the industry and the machinery she represents for BTE. She is also Chair of the Hire Association Europe Suppliers Board. I always felt it was rather like LEGO and I could visualise the finished result that people wanted for their sites. Through Mobile Mini, I got involved with some very well-known names working on large complexes. “My first major project was when they redeveloped Spaghetti Junction on the M6. I remember setting up at night, which was quite an experience. I was, after all, a country girl who hadn’t done anything like this before. Being on site, under the M6 in the middle of the night was a real eye-opener for me. I loved it though, and Mini Mobile was a great company to work for.” Rebecca was then approached by Reactec following a recommendation from a mutual customer, BAM Nuttall. She had accomplished her 12-month mission for JCB. That is when serious conversations with Dave Hawley at BTE Plant Sales started in 2018. By August 2018, she had moved back to England and started as Commercial Director for BTE. She hasn’t looked back. “It was a hard decision to leave JCB, but the opportunity I had at BTE Plant Sales, being the largest independent dealer in the UK, was something new and exciting, so I couldn’t wait to join the team.” BTE Plant Sales celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2020, selling leading brand machinery and equipment. Her role as Commercial Director absorbed both the Sales Director and Operations Director responsibilities. “Like others, we were uncertain about how the pandemic would affect us when lockdown first hit us in March 2020. her being asked to model for Brownings. She laughs about her catering training, and says she loves nothing more than to throw a dinner party and can’t wait to “socialise properly” again. When quizzed about the secret to her success, Rebecca says: “I don’t claim to be especially academic, but I have common sense and a very strong work ethic. I have also been fortunate to make some fantastic friends in the industry and I love what I do.”

Rebecca clearly has an appetite to take the business further, and her energetic approach is evident as we talk. For someone who says she is such a tomboy, she is also very feminine. Yet for anyone who may doubt her technical knowledge, think again. She evidently knows her stuff and isn’t worried about getting her hands dirty if necessary to learn about it. Rebecca is a grafter through and through, so I am curious about how she relaxes. “I adore horses and have gone back to competing. I bought a lovely Connemara when I moved back to the UK, and I have been taking part in some competitions. Freddie is still a novice but is going well, and I

BROOKLAND Sand and Aggregates Limited has, for the first time in its trading history, delivered more than one million tonnes of product in a twelvemonth period. Behind the milestone achievement are 15 McCloskey machines, integral to the delivery of more than 40 separate products.

Operating from Littlejohns China Clay Pit, the largest China Clay pit in the world, the Saint Austell-based company takes vast quantities of granite, rock and sand (a by-product

from the process of extracting Kaolin) from the quarry’s operators. The material is highly abrasive and varies greatly in size, ranging from fine sands to 25-tonne boulders. Processing this material are fifteen McCloskey machines, including three J50H Jaw Crushers, with the fourth joining the fleet imminently, a C2 Cone Crusher and ten McCloskey screeners.

james covell • Interview

James Covell: ‘Boxing clever’ at king’s lynn construction James Covell of King’s Lynn Construction Ltd talks to Rachel Lambert about growing up on diggers, the ups and downs of working in a family business, and the moment he realised he needed to go it alone.

IT

is not easy going out alone and starting a new business, especially in challenging times and without any financial backing behind you. But James Covell of King’s Lynn Construction Ltd has done exactly that, and his business is going from strength to strength. James started trading as a Norfolk based company - King’s Lynn Construction Ltd - in September 2018. Construction, and especially ‘digging’ is in his DNA. An award-winning excavator operator (James has won multiple accolades in the UK and overseas), he has been in the cab ‘digging’ since the age of four, when he recalls many

happy memories driving with his father. If his name ‘James Covell’ sounds familiar, he won his first CASE operator challenge at Norfolk showground and has frequently found himself on the podium in other challenges since then, at events such as PlantWORX and Hillhead. “We used to have a lot of fun as kids. There was a plum tree at the bottom of our garden, and I remember I used to put my brothers in the bucket to take plums off the tree. I was on site by the age of nine digging house footings, which of course raised a few health and safety eyebrows at the time!” James has always had a strong work ethos and used to work

weekends and school holidays. This has enabled him to be very particular and pay a lot of attention to detail. “I loved doing the work. After all, I was getting paid for it, and none of my mates were earning money at the time.” Upon leaving school, James went to college and studied bricklaying and then went on to several work placements with a variety of builders, before going to work in his father’s business. “Dad didn’t take any prisoners and I was dropped in at the deep end, really. I had no option but to get on with it but in many ways, that was good for me. “Due to personal reasons and bumps along the road, I went →

me, and a wife and five children to provide for. I borrowed my first van from a mate, a Mercedes Sprinter, who said ‘pay me back when you can’. So, I grafted for seven days a week, got some cash together and paid for the van. Yes, it was a tough start, but all the hard work and persistence has paid off.” Today, King’s Lynn Construction Ltd has a fleet of immaculate, fully liveried vans, with James saying that he wished he had taken the plunge many years earlier. James is quick to admit that he has learnt a lot of lessons about business and says it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.

to work for Matthew Williams Digger Hire as an operator for about three years.” James then returned to work with his father’s company. Sadly, this put a lot of strain on their relationship and did not work out. This was the moment he decided for his career, he needed to “go it alone”. He started King’s Lynn Construction virtually straight away.

“I have made mistakes, but it’s important that you learn from mistakes. An excolleague wanted to join me as a shareholder of the business which I welcomed at the time, but I ended up having to buy him out just as we were getting on our feet. I was disappointed because my main motivation was seeing others succeed and I had hoped he could be a part of our success story. It wasn’t to be, so you move on and learn from it.”

“It suddenly became clear that I had to start my own business” “Word was spreading, and the phone kept ringing with offers of work here, there and everywhere. It suddenly became clear that I had to start my own business. It was a big step, because I had no money behind

James Covell • Interview “Ron helped me in so many ways. He coached me and assisted me in preparing a business plan, helped me find an accountant and taught me a lot about the importance of having a business strategy, which is something I had no previous experience in. It was a far cry from my dad’s way of running a business.”

One of king’s lynn construction’s latest additions

Ron commissioned James and the team at King’s Lynn Construction to build a bespoke property, which he believes is still one of the projects he is most proud of. Sadly, Ron passed away just two weeks after he had moved in. “I felt devastated because he had done so much for me, and I was so proud of what we had achieved together, building this amazing property. His passing was all very sudden and extremely sad for his family. Having known Ron since I was a child, I remembered we had a photo of him lifting me up above his head. When we built the house, we re-enacted the photo but this time, I picked him up! Happy memories.”

this year has been “blown out of the water”. He is certainly proving himself to any doubters.

Groundworks and Civils still account for the majority of King’s Lynn Construction’s work. The company is both Highways Approved and Anglian Water Approved, and has a number of other accreditations to its name.

And speaking of water, James and his family are very keen on water sports, especially jetskiing. He spent a lot of time on his dad’s sea boat when he was young, and his love of water has never waned. The family are keen caravanners too.

“We don’t want to be confined to doing just footings and roads, we are progressing the business to offer a total solution, so we have a whole arsenal to our credit.”

A ‘gentle giant’, James is not just ‘king of the dig’, he has tried his hand at boxing too, to quite a high level where he was known as ‘James Hulk Covell’. He took part in three white collar fights and some charity boxing events, where he says modestly, that “he earned a few quid out of it and was a bit skinnier in those days”! Sporty by nature, he also used to be into motor-cross and rugby.

The company provides a complete groundworks solution for industrial, commercial and private customers As for business, James is delighted with how it is going, even in the midst of the pandemic and other economic factors. King’s Lynn Construction currently employs nine people, including James’ right hand man, Site Manager, John Dye. The company provides a complete groundworks solution for industrial, commercial and private customers throughout Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and parts of Lincolnshire. They have also recently set up a dedicated Crushing and Screening Division, which is a service that is offered nationwide. “Buying the screener was a bit of a risk, but it is really paying off. The prices of materials and muckaway are going through the roof. We recently had a customer who had about £40,000 worth of muckaway. We managed to halve that by

James is quick to stress, that while he wants the business to be profitable (and indeed it is), he isn’t money-driven by nature. “We pride ourselves on quality over quantity and I never want to change that. My dad used to say, ‘there’s a right way or there’s no way’, and that mentality has stuck with me. I don’t want the business to grow too big on the Civil side of our work because I always want the company to be a manageable size. I certainly would never compromise on quality and would never want to lose touch with what we’re doing. Attention to detail and quality of workmanship is what we want to be remembered for.” This ethos is certainly working, with James explaining that they are so busy that the business plan and projected turnover for

James evidently loves what he does, saying: “The day I don’t want to get up and go to work is the day I’ll pack it up.” He says he owes a lot to his wife Laura, who has stuck by him throughout all the hard times. And, of course, to Ron Leadley who would say to him, “some people would like it to happen, some people wish it to happen, and others make it happen.” James is making it happen. So, with such passion for what he does, I asked if he had ever considered another career. He laughs and says that it would have to be something around machinery, but he does have one quest on his bucket list – “to get in the Dancing Diggers display team”. JCB, are you listening?

The HAnds free future: autonomous machinery in the uk quarrying industry Hannah Bounford explores the current developments that could lead to an autonomous revolution in UK Quarrying

THE

quarrying industry is one of the oldest in the UK. For centuries, it has supplied the country with essential minerals from coal to building aggregates. With such an established history, it’s no question that quarrying is an industry that has seen its fair share of change and technological advancements. In the 21st century, the most anticipated of these advancements is the use of autonomous solutions.

environments are controlled, spacious and the work itself often repetitive. These conditions are ideal for autonomous and self-driving machinery, such as dumper trucks and even wheel loaders. Furthermore, quarrying can be a dangerous industry with a higher fatality and incident rate than the construction industry. In the future, the hope is that the use of autonomous machinery would reduce the rate of incidents within the industry by reducing the required manpower. The drive towards autonomous solutions in the mining and quarrying industries has grown over the past couple of years, with a plethora of companies investing resources into the development of machinery. One such company is

One of the key aspects of Volvo Autonomous Solutions is to “support customers with solutions to autonomous machines’ other challenges, namely the supporting infrastructure, control towers, repair and maintenance, virtual drivers and even run the operations if needed”, as the move to autonomous sites will not be as easy as replacing manual machinery with autonomous plant. Alongside this, Volvo Autonomous Solutions have been working on the development of autonomous machinery such as the TA-15 hauler, which was the winner of a Red Dot Award for product design last year. →

The Hands Free Future • Topical Commentary In March 2021, Volvo Autonomous Solutions announced a partnership with Foretellix, a company focused on safety within the autonomous vehicle industry. Together, the two companies hope to address the challenges of large-scale verification of autonomous driving solutions on highways and confined areas. For the quarrying industry, this partnership marks a step towards the wide scale use of autonomous plant. The companies will jointly create a Coverage Driven Verification solution, enabling “massive scale testing of millions of difference scenarios, which will validate auto validate autonomous vehicles and machines dealing with anything they might encounter within their specified Operational Design Domain.” In the UK, trials of a safety framework for off-highway autonomous vehicle deployment developed by Oxbotica and TRL started taking place in May 2021. This code of practice is intended to help organisations “transition

to new working practices and harness the potential benefits with no impact on safety”. These trials indicate that industries such as quarrying and mining could well see an autonomous future on the horizon.

In other countries, autonomous machinery is already in established use. In May, around the same time that Oxbotica and TRL started trials of their code of practice, Caterpillar announced that their autonomous trucks using Cat® MineStar™ Command for hauling have surpassed the 3 billion tonne milestone. Fleets using the Command Autonomous Haulage System are located across 17 mine locations in North America, South America, and Australia. Commodities mined using the Cat Command include iron ore, oil sands, copper, coal and gold. Customers using Command for

The volvo ta-15 autonomous hauler won a red dot award for product design in 2020.

“We continue to decrease the time between our major milestone targets because, from initial contract to full deployment, we constantly improve Command implementation efficiency. Consistent with previous milestone trends, we anticipate crossing the 4 billion tonnes threshold at even a faster pace than achieving 3 billion tonnes,” says Marc Cameron, vice president at Caterpillar Resource Industries. “Looking forward, we are planning the expansion of Command for hauling to include our 140-tonne (150-ton) class Cat® 785 mining truck.” At this point, the UK industry has some time to go before seeing a fully autonomous quarrying site. However, with autonomous machinery trials underway, established machinery resulting in improved productivity, and new machinery prototypes constantly being introduced, it may not be long until autonomous sites are a reality on our shores.

It is, in actual fact, the largest outdoor rail show in Europe. Blessed with beautiful weather (it was ideal on the first day), it was little surprise that attendance was good too. In this feature, we share a pictorial tour of some of the highlights of the show taken on the first day. The organisers have called the show “an overwhelming success” and it brought the rail community together ‘in person’ for a celebration of everything the UK rail industry has to offer after such a long time apart. Volvo Makes a Winning Return Burton-based Willshees Waste & Recycling has added three new Volvo trucks – two FM 8x4 rigids and one FH Globetrotter 6x2 tractor unit – to its rapidly growing fleet. The trucks are the first Volvos the business has put into service for several years. They will be joined at the company by two new model FMXs – Volvo’s most robust construction truck to-date – and one new model FH tractor unit later in the year. Dean Willshee, Owner of Willshees Waste & Recycling, says: “Business is booming and we are having to put more trucks on the road in order to keep up with demand. I have run Volvos in the past but not for many a year now. “The bulk of the fleet is with a rival manufacturer but I liked the look and feel of these Volvos; we took them for a test drive and were very impressed. With the FH and two FM eightwheelers we already have in service, plus the new model trucks to come, Volvo will have a good share of the fleet.” Supplied by Brett Howton, Area Sales Manager at Hartshorne Motor Services, all three trucks are powered by Volvo’s D13K engine, with the FH producing 500 hp and 2,500 Nm of torque, while the two FMs produce 460 hp and a top torque figure of 2,300 Nm. 88

The 6x2 FH is specified with Volvo’s long-haul fuel package – with the latest generation I-See predictive cruise control and 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission with long haul optimised software – while the interior of its Globetrotter cab benefits from drive plus and single bed living packages. The interior also features a leather steering wheel, luxury sleeper control panel and 33-litre under-bunk mounted refrigerator. The two FMs, built on a 5,100mm wheelbase, come equipped with I-Shift transmission with construction and off-road software, and are fitted with Boughton Engineering hooklift bodies. They are protected with a two-year Volvo Gold Contract, covering all repair and maintenance. “We’ve specified all three trucks with a high chassis to help ground clearance when they’re working off-road,” adds Willshee. “The eightwheelers will be collecting and delivering skips from various companies around the local area – while the FH will be doing more mileage, towing a walking floor trailer moving waste out of transfer stations onto other sites. “All three have hit the ground running. The drivers are very happy and we are looking forward to the new model Volvos joining them in the coming months.”

The 821 E material handler is made for challenging environments, thanks to a reversible fan for dust discharge at the cooler and more. Featuring a highly responsive joystick control, it makes grabbing work in sorting precise. With an elevated driver’s cab for optimal focus on the work area, the 821 E has an ideal viewing height during loading work. Sennebogen’s compact and versatile material handlers emphasise higher operator safety thanks to various equipment options, including a protective front guard and bulletproof glass.
