Our two feature articles this month get straight down to the business of demolition. Rebecca Phillips gets a blast from the past as she delves deep into the history of demolition, while Akville Peckyte finds the best demolition attachments on the market. Speaking of attachments, Harford Attachments adorn our front page, giving us the inside scoop on everything from how they got started to their latest innovative ideas. We are also lucky to have three incredible company profiles this issue, with Rouse Services, ABAX and FAST Excocet showing off their brightest and best over six stunning pages a piece. It was visiting season for us here at Plant Planet, as we were out on the road every week! Not only were we at both the Executive Hire Roadshows, getting excited for the big show in February, but we also got to exhibit at both the CPA conference and IPAF Elevation Day. Not only that, but Plant Planet was the only magazine invited to Sunbelt Rentals’ Go Greener Day, where we got to see the latest they had to offer. Catch the reviews inside and take the journey with us. Our travels also gave our editor rise to launch the brand new feature Industry Corner, which will get Plant Planet out and about each and every issue. For our very first one, we are delighted to have three giants in the attachment industry welcome us on site. Albutt Attachments, Invicta Forks and Attachments and BPH Attachments were all wonderful hosts to our editor and her camera, as they each took her on tours of their HQs and sat down for interviews. WHY USING THE RIGHT OIL IS SO IMPORTANT!

achinery downtime can be a huge inconvenience, especially during busy periods. Did you know that 70% of all unreliability in machines is caused by improper lubrication? (Source: Machinery Lubrication magazine.) Lubricant demands for vehicles and machinery are greater than ever. Here, lubricant manufacturer for over 100 years, Witham Group, provide some tips on how to prevent costly breakdowns. Using high-quality lubricants with the right specifications are crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of engines. Here are several reasons why:

Reduced Friction:

Lubricants form a protective layer between moving parts, reducing friction and wear. High-quality lubricants have additives that provide a durable film, ensuring smooth operation and minimizing metal-to-metal contact.

Heat Dissipation:

which is important for both economic and environmental reasons.

Maintaining Viscosity:

Lubricants need to maintain their viscosity (thickness) across a range of temperatures. Quality lubricants are formulated to remain effective in extreme conditions, ensuring consistent protection in both hot and cold environments.

Compliance with Manufacturer Specifications:

Engine manufacturers provide specific lubricant recommendations based on the design and requirements of their engines. Using lubricants that meet or exceed these specifications ensures compatibility and optimal performance.

Extended Maintenance Intervals:

High-quality lubricants often have properties that allow for longer intervals between oil changes and maintenance, reducing downtime and operational costs.

Use the right lubricant for the right type of vehicle and machinery. Oil is to an engine what blood is to the human body. If it’s too thick it can cause the engines oil system to clog (think heart attack); too thin and you risk uncontrolled wear. So, selecting and maintaining the consistency (viscosity) is key. When oil viscosity is too low or high, it may be detected as a loss of pressure in the oil supply to the engine. Older equipment’s needs are very different to modern applications, including complying with the latest emissions standards. A trusted oil manufacturer uses approved formulations approved by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). This helps ensure that warranty conditions are not jeopardised, and servicing costs are kept to a minimum. Always choose a lubricant that meets the appropriate quality standard specified by either the OEM or one of the industry bodies such as ACEA or API.

Having a free lubricant survey of your vehicle fleet will enable you to have an easy reference to the recommended specs for engine oil, greases, hydraulic and brake fluid and antifreeze and coolants. Do you have enough oil in the engine? Even if the correct amount of lubricant has been added during an oil change, the oil may be unduly consumed due to evaporation, burning caused by worn piston rings, and leaks through the seals or oil plug. Typically, the older the equipment, the more oil it will use. Follow proper oil change intervals and check the oil periodically. Conversely too much oil in the system can cause catastrophic failure, oil cannot be compressed so components are be in danger of colliding with essentially a solid mass.

Regular maintenance checks It’s also important to conduct regular maintenance checks to try and spot any issues before a breakdown is caused. Regular checks of engine oil, transmission fluid and grease points should be carried out, especially during periods of heavy usage. Regular checks should also be made on gearboxes, chains and belts for wear and replace fuel filters regularly. Don’t ignore warning signals Warning lights are there for a reason, often signalling issues that need to be addressed, such as low hydraulic pressure, high engine temperature or a shaft that isn’t turning. However, too often those signals are ignored, resulting in machinery failure. To keep your machinery turning throughout the year, simple maintenance and help from a reputable oil provider can make a real financial difference.

ENHANCING SUSTAINABILITY ON SITE: THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION

I

n an era where environmental responsibility is crucial, Sunbelt Rentals offers sustainable solutions that are available now. Their sustainability strategy, “Our Planet,” goes beyond initiatives and focuses on tackling climate challenges with impact. Through this strategy, they are actively reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly alternatives to customers and partners in the UK and Ireland.

The new way of working: Hybrid power solutions

With a track record of successful partnerships, such as providing sustainable temporary power solutions to Story Contracting, Sunbelt Rentals showcases their dedication to environmental responsibility through action. As a result, the incorporation of batteries and fuel saving technologies on construction sites for sustainable power usage is increasingly prevalent.

The challenge:

Story Contracting challenged Sunbelt Rentals to find an efficient, lower carbon energy solution for a large site compound in Scotland. They required a 24/7 temporary power solution for flood lighting, EV charging, and a welfare complex consisting of 18 units. These

units included office space, drying rooms, a canteen, storage areas, meeting rooms, as well as toilets and showers.

The solution:

The project is a crucial bridge replacement for the Ravenscraig development programme for Network Rail in Scotland. Traditionally, this type of site would have relied on a 150KVA generator, running 24/7, consuming up to 18 litres of fuel per hour. However, a more environmentally friendly solution was implemented, using Battery Storage technology and an Energy Management system. This allowed for the use of a smaller 60kVA fuel-powered generator, which offers a significant reduction in fuel, while the Battery Storage Unit (BSU) took over the overnight and weekend power requirements, providing further savings in fuel, costs and a reduction in emissions. The energy management system was programmed to shut off devices when not in use, suppressing the peak load (hence to downsize in generator), and increasing energy.

The results:

During the initial 6-month period of the project, the two BSUs consistently powered the site, on average 68% of the time. As a result, fuel consumption

reduced by an estimated 1,168 litres per week, leading to a significant decrease of approximately 3,083 kg in emissions per week. These efforts delivered cost savings of £21,929.44 over the 6-month period, with an average weekly savings of £843.44. The technology not only met the project’s power requirements, but it also played a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and commercial savings.

WHC HIRE SERVICES CONTINUES TO PUT ITS TRUST IN KUBOTA

L

ongstanding hire specialist, WHC Hire Services has further increased its offering by adding additional Kubota machines to its fleet due to customer demand, increasing its Kubota fleet to more than 200 machines. WHC Hire Services is a wellestablished and trusted supplier of tool and plant equipment through the South West and West Midlands regions, with depots in Tewkesbury, Worcester and Chipping Norton. The company has purchased the new machines from Kubota dealer Lister Wilder to boost the existing fleet, ensuring WHC continues to meet the diverse needs of its wide

customer base. These customers come from a variety of sectors and include highway agencies, construction and building companies as well as small or family businesses and DIY customers. This latest purchase by WHC signifies the strength of the relationship between the companies which has grown over the years. The new machines, which consist of Kubota’s 6-tonne KX060-5 and 3-tonne KX027-4 excavators, have been purchased from Lister Wilder this year as a growth to the existing range of Kubota equipment WHC has to offer its customers. Rob White, Construction Division Manager at Kubota, said: “It’s great to see WHC Hire Services continued trust in our excavators. This long-standing partnership is a testament to our continued drive to develop machinery that not only is robust and reliable, but also helps move our customers’ business forward. We look forward to what the future holds as we work closely with WHC Hire Services.”

ROTOTILT WIN TWO DESIGN AWARDS FOR ITS NEW JOYSTICKS

R

ototilt has launched a number of new products for excavators within its Rototilt Control concept, including the company’s first joysticks. Rototilt has now won both the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award 2023 for the RC Joysticks. “User experience was our top priority when we launched the project to develop our own joysticks. These awards are further proof that we are on the right track,” says Caroline Jonsson, Product Manager. Rototilt Group AB manufactures tiltrotators, machine couplers, work tools and other accessories for the construction industry. During the autumn of 2022, the company launched its Rototilt Control product concept, including new joysticks for excavators. Rototilt has now won two prestigious international design awards for its joysticks – the Red Dot Award 2023 and the iF Design Award 2023.

“We are incredibly proud and grateful to have been awarded these distinctions,” says Caroline Jonsson, Product Manager. “Our primary aim is to be well received by our users, of course, but this is further evidence that we are an innovative company.” Through field testing carried out with both male and female machine operators, Rototilt’s objective has been to design a handle that offers the very best ergonomics, regardless of the operator’s gender or hand size. The materials and design have been carefully selected to deliver a high level of comfort and style, considers Caroline. “This has involved a well-thought-out design process, where the aim has been to create a well-functioning product that improves the working environment for the user,” says Caroline. “Working in collaboration with product designers, we made use of methods such as 3D printing and modelling. Everything from button placement to surface quality and the

choice of materials was scrutinised down to the smallest detail.” The technology behind RC Joysticks prioritises safety and scalability. Both the hardware and the software design comply with the ISO 13849 safety standard. The joysticks are also prepared for future work tools and applications. “We have incorporated the potential to make adaptations in terms of the placement and function of buttons and rollers for controlling the tiltrotator and the machine,” says engineer Mikael Häggström. “Work tools and areas of use are constantly evolving, and we want RC Joysticks to be technically prepared for future applications.”

CHARGING AHEAD

Operator Taylor Mence appreciated the quietness of the Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator, which made it easier to communicate with his banksman while digging trenches.

O

n a project installing EV charging points, a Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator from SMT GB proved it can do the same job as a diesel machine with no emissions, less noise, and simpler maintenance. With a mission to deliver sustainable transport from sun to wheel, GRIDSERVE had a clear choice of machine to help construct its new High Power Electric Super Hub at Scotch Corner Services near Darlington. The company’s CEO, Toddington Harper, had seen a Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator at the MOVE exhibition for innovation in sustainable transport in 2022 and was immediately impressed by its potential to support GRIDSERVE in reducing CO2 throughout the value chain. A discussion with Volvo dealer SMT GB ensued and before long, one of these 2.5t fully electric machines was set to work digging trenches for the transformers,

power banks, charging units, and cabling to connect the 12 new EV chargers at Scotch Corner to the grid. Besides the ECR25 Electric’s environmental credentials, GRIDSERVE has also appreciated its health and safety benefits. The excavator’s quiet operation makes communication easier and clearer on site without the need for radios or signals, while the lack of diesel exhaust fumes makes it more pleasant to be around. “It’s my first time driving an electric digger and it’s got the same pull and power as a diesel machine, just without the fumes and noise, which is a lot better. Normally, when I’ve got my banksman screaming at me and I can’t hear a word he is saying over the engine, I have to switch the machine off, but you don’t have that problem with an electric one,” said operator Taylor Mence. The ECR25 Electric is easy to charge via a standard charging cable and with a

full battery – replenished during lunch or overnight – it can complete a four-hour shift, which is more than GRIDSERVE needed on the Scotch Corner project. Thinking longer term, the team also liked how simple the ECR25 Electric is to maintain with no oil or filter changes. “I think there is some education to be done to let people know just how easy electric machines are to use, charge, and maintain. he Construction Equipment Association (CEA), together with key industry stakeholders like the Construction Planthire Association (CPA) and leading insurance companies such as NFU Mutual, has committed a substantial investment, totalling £650,000 over the next three years, to the UK’s fight against machinery theft. This significant funding is dedicated to advancing the goals and objectives of the CEA’s CESAR Scheme and allocated to boost the National Rural Crime Unit (NRCU) and the National Construction & Agricultural Theft Team (NCATT). This collaborative funding initiative represents a strategic approach to tackle the escalating issue of equipment theft, which not only affects individual businesses but also has broader implications for the UK’s economy and infrastructure development. As the longstanding custodian of this police fund, the CEA recognises the importance of collaborative efforts in this area. CEA CEO Suneeta Johal commented on the initiative, stating, “The escalating issue of machinery theft across our country not only disrupts the operational efficiency of businesses but also poses a significant threat to the broader construction sector and

Johal also stressed the need for ongoing support and collaboration with governmental bodies to effectively address this pervasive challenge. “Maintaining a strong, united front against such criminal activities is imperative. Our contribution signifies our resolve to protect the industry, and we trust that our collective efforts will result in a safer, more secure operating environment for all involved,” she added. This move by the CEA and its partners underlines a shared understanding of the critical need for enhanced security measures and proactive initiatives to tackle the growing problem of machinery theft in the UK. Among these significant investments and collaborations, the key role of the CEA’s CESAR Scheme, delivered by Datatag, cannot be overstated. As a proven theft deterrent and an effective recovery tool, the CESAR Scheme has gained recognition from every police force in the UK and, with the introduction of the new RAPID check (Registered Assets Police Information Database), its influence is now global. Smith MP queried James Cleverly MP on further steps to empower the NRCU in tackling these sophisticated criminal gangs. Greg Smith MP stated, “Serious organised acquisitive crime is hitting rural communities hard with high-value agricultural equipment targeted for theft. Recently, the National Rural Crime unit has recovered over £5m of stolen equipment, nearly £1m of which was recovered abroad. The Construction Plant Hire Association, NFU Mutual, and The Construction Equipment Association have put significant funds into the NRCU, but what more can my Right Honourable Friend (James Cleverly MP) do to ensure the National Rural Crime Unit has the resources they need to tackle these serious organised criminal gangs?” Responding to Smith MP’s concerns, James Cleverly MP acknowledged the significance of the issue and the need for continued support for rural communities. He said, “I thank my Rt Honourable Friend (Greg Smith MP) for the work

he Executive Hire Show is already 96 per cent sold out for its February edition – and Smart Display is proud to be working alongside the show as a specialist exhibition stand installer. With the constant need for development, demolition has become an everyday sight in the modern world. It seems almost hum drum to stroll through a city and walk past a building site with a half-collapsed property. Perhaps it’s because we intrinsically know it’s for the greater good, so we turn a blind eye to the literal chaos before us. But, in reality, the path that led us to this controlled destruction is a gruesome one. Two forms of demolition are still used today: Manual and Building Implosion, and both of these have roots in sinister happenings. So let’s wind the clock back and understand exactly how we came to modern day demolition.

Medieval Methods

First up, Manual Demolition. How did we get to smashing up buildings for our own personal gain? Well, it must be said that Manual Demolition doesn’t have the most heroic of histories. In fact, its early days lie solely in the military side of things, as it was often employed during ‘scorched earth’ tactics. The earliest recorded example of demolition in British history actually dates back to the reign of William the Conqueror and his Harrying of the North. That particular series of military campaigns to drive out the last of the Danes from the newly conquered Britain resulted in the Normans laying waste to all of the Northern Shires, especially Yorkshire, which at one point was the Viking capital of Britain. Many civilian dwellings were razed to the ground, and that particular method of destruction is seen by many scholars as an early form of demolition. It wasn’t a simple case of collateral damage or pillaging; this was the systematic and deliberate desecration of buildings. These sorts of attacks would

ultimately inspire the later modern military tactics that in turn instigate the modern method of demolition. Staying with medieval warfare, it could be argued that the trebuchet was the original wrecking ball. Just a couple of hundred years after King William demolished the north of England, these giant wooden catapults were used by the French to lay waste to castles and forts as early as the French crusades. In fact, until the invention of gunpowder, it was arguably the most powerful siege engine of the medieval period. Looking at the etymology of the word trebuchet gives even more rise to the idea it is the wrecking ball’s ancestor. In the original French, the verbal root came from trebucher (now trébucher) meaning “to overthrow, to bring down”. Combining this with the Anglo-Latin understanding of the word as a “medieval stone-throwing engine”, gives a clear link to the words “wrecking ball”. Even the preferred type of trebuchet is similar to a modern day wrecking ball, in the fact it uses both gravity and the mechanics of the machine wielding the heavy stone to cause the destruction. Known as Counterweight Trebuchets, they relied on the potential energy that is stored by slowly raising an extremely heavy box (filled with the necessary materials for demolition) attached to the short end of the hinged beam and then releasing it on command. In contrast, Traction Trebuchets used human power, where a team of people would pull ropes attached to the short beam on command. Of course, relying solely on man power gave varying results and had too much result variance. So despite proving a more technical problem for the engineer, the ease of the Counterweight Trebuchet gave much more consistent results. lmost exactly like attaching the correct wrecking ball to the most appropriate crane. Funny how history repeats itself, isn’t it? At least this time, the building owners have requested the destruction of their property and won’t be trembling inside as an army swarms in.

Imploding Influence

So that gives us a glimpse of the first step towards manual demolition, but what about building implosion? Well, curiously, the very first documented case of building implosion was the razing of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Waterford, Ireland in 1733. Back then, there wasn’t such a thing as a planning and development department; it was only the Bishop that needed to be convinced that a snazzy new cathedral was the order of the day, replacing the Norman Gothic ‘monstrosity’ that had been there since the 11th century (which, by the way, many have now sited as a travesty). It’s said that potential builders were so enthusiastic about the new structure, that they arranged for pieces of rubble to fall in front of the Bishop to force his hand, and it worked! The use of 68kg of gunpowder, which was an extraordinarily high amount of explosives for the time period, instantly collapsed the building. It also created a deafening boom and destructive explosion that caused a problematic amount of collateral damage. But still, they got the job done! Sort of. Luckily, exactly a century later in 1833, Alfred Nobel was born. This famous Swedish chemist was not simply the creator of the famous Nobel Prize, he was also the inventor of dynamite; an invention that led to writer Jeff Byles referring to him as “the patron saint of creative destruction.” Originally named ‘Nobel’s Blasting Powder’, the high velocity explosive was made using stabilised nitroglycerin and sorbents (usually shells or clay). Unlike traditional black-powder explosives, its compact design meant that accidental detonation was far less likely and that explosions could be reduced to a smaller scale.

The term “building implosion” is slightly misleading, as it does not follow the normal steps of true implosion. A true implosion involves a difference between inward and outward forces, that is so large that the structure collapses inward into itself. Instead, building implosion is the progressive collapse of a structure by weakening or removing critical supports.

Strangely, it was WW2 that helped to provide an answer So with dynamite came a more controlled and precise way to destroy a building. This was just as well, as in the later half of the 19th century and throughout the mid-20th century, the Skyscraper was invented. To gain the extra height, the design had become far more complex. But with the erection of a new structure, ultimately comes the need to demolish it. So, tearing them down presented a brand new problem in the world of construction. Strangely, it was WW2 that helped to provide an answer. Unlike the scorched earth tactics of the Norman conquerors, the need arose to utilise buildings as shelter, look outposts or sniper spots in order to wage war in built-up city warfare. Battles like Stalingrad, for example, relied heavily on such a tactic. The need to blow up enemy outposts (without destroying your own) became essential. Not every battle could be like the Battle of Aachen; an operation that destroyed the majority of the city and did, ironically, lead to mass scale construction.

The Liberty Ships were so designed that they were unable to operate with empty cargo holds. So all these US ships unloading at Bristol were loaded with bomb rubble and sent back to NYC, where the rubble was used to underlay a new road along the east side of Manhattan.

So began the process of smaller scale implosion with less collateral damage. RDX, otherwise known as cyclonite, was invented in this time and was another high velocity explosive that could be more readily controlled. This nonelectrical firing system combined with staggered detonation meant that after the war, when many cities globally required rebuilding, they could begin this process with proper implosion.

Spectator Sport

As we moved into the 21st Century’s fast-moving world, demolition became not simply a much needed aspect of construction. It also drew interest from civilian parties who were fascinated by the display of such awesome power, so safety and control were paramount. If it went wrong, the damage went beyond collateral. For example, when the Royal Canberra Hospital in Australia was demolished in 1997, many people wanted to come and watch its demise. The initial explosion of the site was not properly calculated and therefore, not properly contained. Huge pieces of debris were projected towards spectators who stood at a ‘safe’ distance of 500m away. Sadly, a 12 year old girl was killed instantly on impact and a further 9 people were injured. In fact, fragments of masonry and metal were found as far as 650m from the demolition site.

Nowadays, preparation for demolition can take anywhere between several weeks to a few months. For implosions, which are used for smaller scale demolitions usually, site managers ensure any material that can form a deadly projectile, like glass or insulation, is removed. Explosives are then placed within building columns in order to properly collapse the building without projecting debris outwards. Specific demolition, such as high reach, requires a manual approach, which in turn needs a wide range of tools, not just wrecking balls. For example, structural steel elements will require an excavator with a steel attachment, whereas concrete structures need hydraulic hammers. There’s even the “inside out” method, where a series of remotely operated mini excavators demolish the building’s interior, one floor at a time, whilst the outer structure remains intact as a sort of scaffolding. Other such structural specific equipment might be fire hoses to control any dust created or loaders or bulldozers with “rake” attachments. Loaders are also often used to sort steel and remove materials.

In October 1994, the demolition of the Sears Merchandise Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, drew an enormous crowd said to be up to 50,000 people. And that’s not all. This figure didn’t even include the multitude of protesters, bands, and street vendors selling building implosion memorabilia! december 2023

As with most things nowadays, there is an alternative “greener” approach to demolition, called Deconstruction. It’s defined as the “selective dismantlement of building components” or even “construction in reverse” and rather than choosing the quickest way to clear a building site, it focuses mainly on proper waste management. By removing the materials by type, it ensures less ends up at landfill and more goes to recycling or is reused. As it is a veritably ancient method of demolition, it requires a high amount of hands on labour. It therefore provides opportunity for the training and development of unskilled or unemployed workers. Unfortunately, due to cost, time, and the integral structure of most modern buildings, deconstruction is not often a viable option.

Concrete Conclusion

Despite its sinister beginnings, demolition has evolved into a booming (pun intended) business that is a key component of the construction industry. In its many forms it provides the world with a fast and effective way to continually grow and develop. Gone are its days of pure chaos and destruction; like a phoenix rising from the ashes of its former self, so too can buildings from a pile of safely created rubble.

The tallest planned demolition of a building was the 52-storey 270 Park Avenue in New York City. Built in 1960, it was torn down in 2019–2021 and will eventually be replaced by 270 Park Avenue, the new, state of the art, global headquarters for JP Morgan Chase. 48

IPAF Elevation Day Back in the UK at the world-famous Belfry Golf Resort, IPAF’s annual Elevation event was a resounding success. This is the 4th time that IPAF Elevation has been hosted in the UK, and this year marked a very special occasion. IPAF celebrated its 40th anniversary; a wonderful milestone in its long and successful history. So many people were in attendance to celebrate with them, and there was laughter and smiles all round. After a fabulous lunch, everyone gathered in the conference room, delved into their IPAF swag bags, and settled in for the speakers’ schedule.

The first speaker to take to the stage was none other than Peter Douglas, IPAF’s CEO and Managing Director, who was delighted to share with everyone a few words from his predecessor, Tim Whiteman, and also IPAF’s founder, Paul Adorian. In this very special film that looked back at the wonderful timeline of achievements, the three company leaders reflected on IPAF’s history, taking us on a journey from humble beginnings right up to the achievements of the present day. The three men proudly gave heartfelt renditions of their experiences in IPAF. None more so than founder, Paul Adorian: “I’ve lived long enough to see IPAF reach its 40th anniversary and I’m immensely proud that I had something to do with it.” Tim Whiteman, who was in attendance that day, brimmed with just as much joy, with his sentiments looking to the future. “IPAF is about sharing best practice all around the world.” One thing that the interviews and the general atmosphere showed was just what a wonderful sense of community IPAF has developed over the years. From the welcoming of new members and sponsors to the jovial joshing with longstanding ones, it was clear that everyone was welcome in the IPAF family, whose integral team grew from just Paul in 1983 to be around 80 people strong in 2023. After the film, Peter looked at the 4 Key Aspects of achievement IPAF has reached over their tenure.

Membership Growth – From a handful of people to nearly 2000 members in 2023. In fact, 2022 saw a boom of 143 members! The longest serving member is Loxam (started as Aerial Platforms and became Loxam as of 2002). Internationalisation – IPAF started in just the UK and has now spread to 80 countries worldwide, with 9 new countries in 2022 alone!

Evolution in Training – 2.5 million people have now trained through IPAF. 20k were trained by 1999, whereas 20k were trained in March 2022 alone. Phil Hemming was the very first instructor for IPAF and was personally thanked by Peter during his talk.

Elevation’s Keynote Speaker was Penny Mallory, performance coach and a former British Rally Car Championship driver, who enthralled us all with her talk on ‘Mental Toughness’. Charming, eloquent and pulled no punches, Penny was brutally honest with herself and her audience about her struggles in life and how mental fortitude really got her through it. Relaying her own story was a brilliant way to demonstrate to everyone the importance of mental health, and its key role in any workplace but particularly in access and high reach, where a strong mindset is necessary to succeed. Starting off by citing the clear gender divide in the room might seem like a bad idea, but actually, it gave Penny a wonderful intro into the trials and tribulations that many industries face. After all, she was the first woman to drive a World Rally Car (WRC Spec) in an otherwise male-dominated world. “Don’t get me wrong, I adore men. I’ve been married 3 times after all. But I didn’t see myself as a woman in a male dominated world; all I wanted to do was race.” It levelled the playing field instantly, and her quick quips certainly earned her a fair few chuckles. And with that, she launched into her all-important lesson on mental toughness. “Achievement is 30% skill talent and intelligence, and 70% mental toughness,” Penny told the crowd. “And mental toughness is about self-awareness, compassion, empathy, focus and determination.” Penny then detailed the 4 Attributes of Mental Toughness: 1. Control – Those who take control of their life and emotional control. 2. Mental Challenge – Those who see challenges as opportunities and accept change.

3. Commitment – Those who set a task and get it done.

4. Confidence – Those who have high levels of confidence in their ability. Penny had a wealth of philosophies to share that were not only applicable in the ever-dangerous world of high access, but also in general life too. “A group of people is different from a team,” Penny explained. “Just because you put people together doesn’t make them a team.” Which is certainly something that is incredibly important when it comes to high access safety. Communication isn’t simply preferable, it is essential.

“Mental responses are important too,” she continued. “Negative thoughts breed a negative mindset.” Looking to her own troubled past demonstrated how she put all of this into practice to become the success that she is today. She went from leaving home at 14, sofa surfing, disowned by her father, to a world rally car championship driver, boxer, and motivational speaker. Though, she disagreed with that last one. “I’m not a motivational speaker. I cannot motivate you; it comes from action. It comes from doing something. And now you’ve heard a teeny-weeny bit of my story, but what is yours?” Certainly plenty of food for thought.

There was a perfect mixture of technical knowhow that blended seamlessly with positive mindset and motivation. There was something for everyone from the speakers. All of the big issues of the sector were covered, as well as other topics that you might worry would be forgotten. IPAF’s clear dedication to its cause was clear at every turn and it should be applauded for the event that was not only incredibly informative, but also welcoming and entertaining.

The evening’s Gala dinner was just as wonderful as the conference. The drinks were flowing and the celebrations were numerous as everyone came together to help IPAF celebrate its 40th anniversary. It was the perfect balance of reminiscing and looking to the future, work and play, listening and action. In the manufacturing community, the Harford name has long been synonymous with premium quality attachment products in the mini-excavator market. An established UK manufacturer for nearly 30 years, Harford have succeeded in building a solid reputation for premium quality products and customer service excellence.

H

arford’s journey began by producing buckets for their own plant hire fleet. Quickly recognising the wider market demand for high quality attachments, Harford exited the plant hire business to concentrate their efforts on meeting the growing demand for their products. Expansion of their product range necessitated the relocation of its manufacturing operations over 10 years ago to a larger, bespoke production facility, meaning they could bring every part of their production process under one roof, a must for maximising efficiency. The retention of its skilled workforce and desire to remain in or near their home city of Norwich, Norfolk, were key factors in the search for suitable premises. When a site within 200m of their existing base became available, it was an easy decision to secure the site and set about creating a bespoke facility which increased production capacity by 50%. Over the years, Harford have continued to respond quickly to new market trends, making significant financial investment in their R&D function. This investment means Harford are bringing 3 new products to market over the next 9 months, starting with the introduction of the fully Hydraulic Safelock® dedicated coupler launched this month.

Armed with her stupidly huge camera (nick named big Bertha by the office), she’ll be out getting her boots dirty as she gets onto site and into the thick of it. For our very first issue it’s all about attachments, and we have not one, not two, but THREE fantastic companies ready and raring to strut their stuff. First up is Albutt Attachments, who started from humble, agricultural beginnings and are now a world leader in their field. Tom Worthington, General Manager, told the tale of how Albutt came to be, and how their unwavering ethos has got them to where they are today. Then we have Invicta Forks and Attachments, the Yorkshire born and bred company who are number one in the UK for what they do. Sales Manager, Aarron Hume, was delighted to talk of future plans, current triumphs and more. And finally, we were lucky enough to be the very first magazine invited to BPH Attachments brand new HQ, for an exclusive behind the scenes tour by Sales Director, Matthew Bastable. Albutt Attachments

Albutt Attachments Arriving at the Tewkesbury site gave me a wonderful insight into Albutt as a company. Immediately I was met with smiles and greetings from everyone there. Despite production carrying on all around me, there was a sense of calm and joy one doesn’t necessarily expect on a worksite. What started as a family business has remained just that over the years, except now the family has extended to all employees of Albutt attachments. Even in his retirement, the first MD, Rob Albutt, still visits to keep up to date with what’s going on and the welfare of the crew. Whatever they need, it’s provided. Speaking with Tom Worthington, General Manager, it makes total sense. There, armed with a cosy cuppa, we sat down and had a good old chinwag about the business.

So, tell me, how did Albutt first get started?

Well, where we are now was the old family farm rented off the local estate, and Rob, who’s our current managing director’s father, wasn’t really into farming. He was more into engineering machinery and welding and fabrication. So, he got into doing repairs for local farmers, building bits of projects that people wanted. And it grew from that into doing some contract work, building chassis for tow trucks and forklift trucks. Then they bought a telehandler on the farm, so he built a bucket and a fork for that. He designed and built the bucket and fork? That’s amazing!

Oh absolutely, he was like that. We sold it to a local dealer in Coulters of Evesham, and then we had a relative that moved up to Cumbria and wanted to buy a Manitou, and he said to the local dealer, ‘right, I’ll buy it, but I want Albutt attachments!’ and the bloke was like ‘who the hell are Albutt Attachments?’ So, at that point they got in touch with Rob and that’s when we started making attachments, and it’s gone from there to where we are today. So, Rob was in that little building by himself about 56-57 years ago, and we’ve now grown to 49 of us across two sites. Oh my goodness. Okay, so it really did start from a man in a shed? Absolutely, from a man in a shed.

But also, from word of mouth?

Yes, and actually the quality. The quality of the product is what pushed us forward. We obviously have to go out and market our business at shows, but really, we’re built on what we know our product is. We build up to quality, rather than down to a price. Which in turn, would prove fruitful over time as your customers won’t have to constantly replace their attachments?

Of course. The thing that really sets us apart, is that we are all farmers. I’m Operations Director, and I’ve got a farm, right? Rob’s son, who came back and is now our managing director; he’s got beef. Our technical director has a beef farm as well. So, we really have our roots in the industry; we know what the customer wants and live by the ethos ‘if we wouldn’t have it on our farm, we wouldn’t expect you to’. And that’s not something your competitors can do?

They can stand next to their machines and know the technical capabilities, but they don’t use them themselves. They don’t understand the needs in the same way. It’s our privilege that our customers happily show off our attachments in their fields that they’ve been using some 20 odd years. Our products are an investment, but when you’re spending tens of thousands of pounds, in some cases hundreds of thousands, on a piece of farming equipment, why not invest properly in the attachment that accompanies it? Absolutely brilliant! The products really do speak for themselves.

You’re better off spending a bit more money on having the right attachment do the right job. If your cheap attachment saved you £500, but it’s broken within a few years, what you’ve got yourself is a lovely expensive paperweight. That’s why we want the product to be right, which has led us to the point that we sell worldwide. We export to about 39 different countries around the world. We do a lot into North America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. All from a man in a shed!

All from a man in a shed. I think that makes it even better though doesn’t it. We are the number one manufacturer by quite some margin in the UK and are number four in the world.

Of course! No need for as much production and all that comes with it if it’s made right the first time. We’re continually investing in the plant and in the business for so many reasons. We put 115 kilowatt solar panels on the roof at the end of 2020 and that provides roughly a third of our electricity and keeps costs down. Like you say though, it’s also about having that accountability, staying sustainable and looking after the environment as well. I guess all goes back to the agricultural side of things; we’ve always done it and will always continue to do so. You’ve got to look after the world we’re in at the end of the day and as rural people we like to look after what’s around us, people and places alike. It’s the perfect ethos! We like to think so.

Then tell me, what is your favourite product that Albutt produces?

Well, our Bucket Grabs are our bread and butter. It’s the thing we started with, and it’s got us to where we are today. The buckets led us into an entirely new sector, in waste. Our waste bucket grabs are a completely different animal to what we put into agriculture as they require a totally different workload. We put twice as much steel into them to strengthen them to an industrial scale. This does mean they need twice as much cost into them, but in waste there’s the money’s there to pay for it. But, in agriculture, there are times when the money isn’t available. Whereas in recycling, when they’re into big contracts and the customer knows they’ve got 15 years of work in front of them, it’s easier for them to invest in the right kit for the job. Of course, waste can use their attachments for 24 hours a day and in agriculture, it’s more like eight. Despite seemingly being the same bit of kit, there are huge variances, and we’re passionate about both. Even after all these years, you’re still growing and evolving.

Oh absolutely. We always will. We’re not shrinking back into the shed any time soon.

Invicta Forks & Attachments I’m just going to say it… as a southerner, I don’t have any right to complain about being cold when I’m walking to my office in Chichester. I say that because rocking up to the Invicta head office in Leeds, I was quite certain my fingers were going to fall off! Lucky then, that I received such a warm welcome from the moment I stepped out of my car. After signing in, I was taken through to the newly renovated boardroom, which was perfectly decked out in the company colours, along with impressive

photographs and their core values. The warm colour palette was as inviting as it was modern, with their latest products perfectly displayed so their amazing work can speak for itself. Invicta struck the perfect balance between the homely, traditional feel I’ve come to know in the North of England, and the modern elegance of the best of the industry. Settled into my comfy chair with my steaming mug of tea, I got my questions prepped as Aarron Hume, Sales Manager, sat across from me and did the same.

How did Invicta get started?

Wow, you’ve definitely come a long way and it shows!

So, I don’t know whether you were aware of the relationship between Invicta and Leeds Welding Company, but we’re actually the sister company to Leeds Welding, and they’ve been going for well over 80 years. Peter Sharpe, the MD here, was actually one of the directors for Leeds Welding, when he realised that they had a small market for attachments. So, pursued this further, committing to building on it, and Invicta was created. Invicta started 28 years ago with Peter, a filing cabinet and a phone. With a huge amounts of tenacity, immense hard work and a lot of long hours, here we are today!

I know it sounds silly, but I was so impressed coming in with how modern it is.

It’s probably just in time, because truth be told, we have just modernised the building, and we’re having work done upstairs on our sales offices. Construction isn’t known for being a lavish industry, but we want staff and customers to be comfortable.

Well, everyone here seems lovely and very friendly. Perhaps that’s just the North and South divide! Everyone here seems happy and contented.

I’m glad! I certainly hope they are. We’re not a massive conglomerate at the end of the day. We are a smaller, more intimate company, which I think really ties into why people buy from us because we’re more personable. It’s all about the experience. One of the big things we always say in our pitch is “the Invicta Difference”, but what is that? It’s the personability. It’s the problem solving. We don’t just chase sales here. We chase relationships. We’re not going to say a product will work for you if it doesn’t because we don’t chase a bottom-line figure. We chase longevity. Personally, I’m really about growing and building on things for the future. It’s not about quick sales for quick money, this is how a

lot of our competitors operate in the markets these days. Feedback from customers that we speak to is that they have gone more call centre; it’s all automated. They don’t have that speaking to somebody in particular and having that someone actually caring about what they’re giving you. People buy from people. They buy from familiarity and comfort, and that is something Invicta will always offer. As you say, that’s the Invicta Difference.

Absolutely. Customers want to speak to somebody to know that what they’re buying is correct. If I’m buying something I know nothing about, I want the right guidance. If I take my car to the garage because it’s making a funny sound, I trust the mechanic to find what’s wrong with it. And it’s the same sort of thing we do here. Truth time, we’re not the

cheapest manufacturer, or the cheapest supplier of attachments. But what we do is make hardwearing, strong attachments with a service that extends beyond the point of payment. If there’s a problem, ring us. We have a great warranty and a great, big customer service team. So price is only one small part of that kind of thing. If you are just simply buying on price, you could buy the cheap and cheerful products in the market; no problem at all. But if you’re looking at long longevity you won’t get that if you buy purely for price. One thing we always say, if you look after your attachments, they’ll look after you. And we make sure to push about servicing and maintaining products, not just selling them and I think that speaks volumes about us as a company. We’re proud that all our attachments are Yorkshire built; they’re built by Yorkshire hands. And if they’re looked after they’ll keep on going. I can tell you of at least four or five occasions in the last few months, we’ve had customers come back in for servicing and repair work on attachments that are 20 years old. Really, 20 years old! Absolutely.

That’s incredible!

Isn’t it? I mean, do you see them every day? No, but it just goes to show how far you can make that product go. If you do invest in a product, and do look after it, it will last longer. If you drive your car like you stole it, it’ll break on you in a couple of weeks, or mostly months. But if you drive it economically and sensibly and you put the right fuel in it, It can go on for years. I think that’s a perfect mindset really. It makes your line of work about trust, which is certainly imperative when your attachments are doing such heavy lifting. Exactly. It’s trust from start to finish.

So, with that in mind, what is your bestselling product, or the one that you’re most proud of?

One of our biggest markets is construction. We have some national contracts in place with some of the biggest names in construction and homebuilding. We supply Barratt Homes, Avant, Redrow, Taylor Wimpey, Bellway, and we supply them all auto-lock skips and it’s one of our fastest moving products. Now, I’ve been here five and half years, and in that time, the designers changed the design three times based on customer feedback. Invicta is continually developing in terms of our products and what we do, and what we supply. We’ve taken feedback from our customers, and they’ve asked for changes and tweaks, and the design evolved from there.

So that relationship you’ve created has in turn led to better products?

Of course. After all, they’re the end-users; they’re the ones really putting it to the test. But it’s also about asking the right questions. How would you improve it? How does it get better? How do we make it better for your application, and so on? And on that basis, we’ve won some really big contracts. Our pride in what we make and our enthusiasm to get it right is what keeps customers coming back. If you see improvements that could be made, help us with that; we’ll work with you to improve it to what you need it to do. Our best-selling product is our auto lock skip which is for use on telehandlers. They’re used up and down the country. If you’re passing a construction site, I have no doubt you’ve seen one of our skips.

Aarron then took me around their site and gave me a wonderful insight into the world of Invicta attachments. He talked about plans to expand their facility in the coming years, not just in size but in staff members. As with everything with Invicta, it’s about constantly moving forward. They have one of the largest stocks in the UK for general products, and the warehouse I got to see was only one small part of that. It was an incredibly impressive display. “We like to think that when people buy from us, it’s not just the product, it’s the brand name as well.” And I certainly think it is. With Invicta, you buy their depth of experience, their industry knowledge, and their ability to turn things around quickly. It’s not just their products that are attached, it’s the Invicta name and ethos as well.

BPH Attachments Arriving at BPH Attachments’ brand new headquarters was certainly a ‘wow’ moment. It suddenly made me rethink my entire outfit choice; had I really just rocked up to this swanky new facility in jeans and boots! Why yes. Yes I had. Suddenly the pressure of being the first magazine to visit the swanky HQ hit me like a tonne of bricks. Lucky for me though, I was immediately welcomed as I walked through the front door and taken upstairs to have a coffee and chat with Katie and Lee-Ann. As first impressions go, this one was up there with the best, and is a real testament to the hard work that has gone into the design and build of the new premises. Every inch of its design was for the comfort of people, be they staff or customers. The space is modern, inviting and styled with the perfect blend of warm décor and BPH’s signature black and yellow. As revamps go, this one is an absolute triumph. So, armed with my favourite initial question, I sat in the wonderful new boardroom with Sales Director, Matthew Bastable, to really get to know the ins and outs of BPH Attachments.

So first question, how did BPH really get started?

Okay, so my grandfather started the business in 1972 and he came from a farming background. It seems most attachment companies often stem from farming.

Yes, I’d wager a lot of construction industry originates in agriculture. So we were originally a traditional hire company. And then in the late nineties, we set up the attachment side of our business, and that now is our key focus. We are the sole importers for the PRODEM range of attachments. We’re dealers for LaBounty, Dynaset, AugerTorque, Berti and OilQuick. That’s given us a full range and broad spectrum of products, and we have been dealers for these brands for a significant number of years. This really all started in 2003, so it’s been twenty years of being well established in the industry. From there we are now in a situation where we have a number of different depots across the country. Here on the South Coast is our head office; we have a depot in North London, a depot near Bristol, and a depot in the Midlands near Leicester. Our Midlands branch opened in 2016. So again, quite a few years ago now. And then during 2021, we opened the Bristol and North London depots. Within all of our depots, we hire, sell, and repair attachments, and they each offer that support, if you like, to customers, whether it be sales, hire or repairs. So, within the hire offering, we have a very large rental fleet of attachments, and that works nationally through our depots, and we will deliver and install the attachment on the customer’s machine. Typically, customers will ring up and ask for an attachment and we’ll find and supply the best model to suit their needs. We will then deliver the attachment and install on to the machine as part of our service to our customers. And it doesn’t have to be new. We also sell an extensive range of refurbished products so that there is something to suit everyone’s needs and budget. That’s, a great way to fit into a circular economy.

Exactly! There are plenty of occasions when the customer’s not looking to a new attachment so we’ll supply something from our from our rental fleet that’s fully refurbished, with warranty and honestly looks pretty close to a new one. It’s another greener approach too, because a lot of the time it’s always just ‘sell something new’, but actually, if you’re making good attachments, you can refurbish them. You can take care of them and keep their life going.

So you offer the repairs and servicing as well?

Absolutely. And that’s across all brands of attachment so not only brands that we sell. Do you think that’s something that helps set BPH apart from other attachment companies? Or perhaps quality? What keeps bringing your customers back?

Well, obviously everyone likes customer service, and good customer service is something we always strive to deliver, and I think it’s something we achieve. And I guess there’s two elements. One is product; it’s got to be the right product for the customer. Our philosophy is that we will supply what’s right for the customer, not what’s right for us. For us, it’s not just about profit, it’s about building that level of relationship with the customer. All about trust?

Absolutely, first and foremost. If we supply the right piece of equipment for the customers to do their job and it’s the right level of quality and we’re in a position where we can support that product, then that’s the mix we’re aiming for. I suppose as well, typically, attachment companies just sell or just hire. We do a lot of both. So, within that, we’ve got a big infrastructure at any of our depots to support the customer and the product, as well as all of our own mobile engineers who can support the equipment out on site, which I think is really important. The nature of the work our attachments are used for is pretty tough going. There will be times that even the best piece of equipment will need some kind of service work. Or it will break down or need a part. So it’s important our customers know that they can get that support from us. And that’s why we’ve got a team of mobile engineers that cover the entire country. From the Shetland Isles all the way down to Cornwall. The keyword there seems to be ‘right’. You are always making sure that you’ve got the right thing for the customer.

Of course. And I think one of the other things that sets us apart is doing what’s right for the customer. It’s all very well and good going for the cheapest product out there, but if it’s not right for your machine, or is unreliable, then you’re no better than when you started. And I think that’s where our focus is: making sure we’re supplying the right attachments and delivering on our commitments to our customers. One of the things that helps us do that is we’ve got many staff that are a long serving. We’ve got staff who have worked for us for over 20 years. We’re a big team now, and we’re supporting each other. I think it’s testament to what our staff do that we provide such a high level of service whilst looking after one another. It’s one of the main reasons we’ve been able to invest and move into these premises. Premises that are truly stunning inside and out, might I say. Thank you, that means a lot as one of our early visitors.

It’s fantastic. So then, let’s focus on the attachments themselves. What do you think is your best product?

It’s a little bit difficult to choose our best product or my favourite product in the sense that we have one extreme to the other. We have a PRODEM breaker that might go on a micro doorway excavator, or we have a LaBounty shear that weighs 20 tonnes. So they are complete opposites in terms of what we do, but they’re both fantastic products. There is so much we supply, whether it be to the plant and tool hire, to the construction industry, or whether it be to contractors who are working in demolition and the waste industry. When you do so many different things, how do you pick one? I mean, I know which product we do most of, but that’s not just because it’s a favourite, it’s because it’s what the market needs. That’s absolutely fair, I’m not sure I’d be able to pick from that many. Why don’t we look at your new premises then because that’s really exciting. But, you’ve only been in here a couple of weeks, is that right?

We’re in our third week here. So there’s a few snagging jobs to do, as you can probably imagine, but it’s a really exciting chapter of the BPH journey. So how long has this been in the process?

Well, as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s very easy to underestimate the time that these projects can take. We actually purchased the site in 2021, and began work on the five acres here almost immediately. It used to be a sawmill, and we repurposed those workshops into our own. But the office building we’re in now is completely new. It’s why we’re able to be so green in its design, with the EV charging stations, rainwater harvesting and the biomass boiler. So it’s been a few years in the making but has definitely been well worth the effort. It means we can look after our staff better as well as welcome our customers right from the get-go. And in terms of our long term strategy, we now have room for expansion. There’s plenty of empty desks at the moment, because they can be filled as we recruit and continue to grow. It sounds like it’s all geared towards growth.

Absolutely. And we’ll be implementing such changes across all of our depots over the foreseeable future. We’ve made the investment and now it’s time to watch it develop into something spectacular. We have so much more to offer and now we can clearly show that to the world. Show not tell?

Oh yes. Show and not tell has always been our philosophy. But there’s still more to do. All I can say is, watch this space.

As the interview wrapped up, I then got suited and booted for the tour of the depot. And as with everything else I saw, I was infinitely impressed. Every part of the redesign has efficiency and safety in mind, be it from moving gantry cranes that reduce the need for forklifts inside the warehouses, to completely separate fabrication workshops for repairs.

It was an amazing privilege for myself and Plant Planet to be invited, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for BPH Attachments.

The Heartbeat of Heavy Plant

Rebecca’s Reflections I have to say, getting to visit these three fantastic sites has been so truly incredible for so many reasons.

Not only does it get me out of the office – which despite being wonderfully cosy does tend to border on monotonous – I can see and experience the amazing things I’m writing about. It has opened up conversations I might otherwise never have had, giving me new facts, opinions and insights into the world of industry I write about every day. Seeing the attachments in action was glorious. I wasn’t simply taking a company’s word on how good they were, I was seeing the proof in the pudding right before my eyes. The cacophony of sights, sounds, smells (not taste though, that would be weird) and touch rounded up to an amazing 360 degree experience across all three of the sites. It’s always nerve-racking launching something new. After months of planning, you get down to it and think, “is this the right thing to do? Have I made a mistake?” I’m so proud and glad to say that our very first one has been such a success! Sneak Peek…

CPA Conference The Heart of England once again played host to the CPA’s annual conference, and this year, the panel lead conference sought to tackle the challenges facing the plant hire sector head on!

For the eighth consecutive year, the CPA’s annual conference has grown and prospered, with the event on the 9th of November welcoming over 200 attendees and 20 exhibitors. These record breaking numbers meant that more people than ever were in attendance to address the issues that face the sector and ultimately, play a part in the solutions. Merryn Myatt, the former BBC news presenter, was back to put panel members in the hotseat and chair the 4 big discussions of the day. Also conducting the ‘roving interviews’, she gave the day’s sponsoring exhibitors the perfect opportunity to put their best foot forward and showcase their contribution to the industry.

Making sure things were simple and easy to use for their guests, the CPA brought back the Slido app, where attendees were encouraged to post questions to the panels and help further the discussions happening right before their eyes. Displayed on the big screens either side of the main stage, all questions were clearly considered and noted by Merryn and the panellists. Opening: Stu McInroy Newly appointed Chief Executive, Stu McInroy, gave an honest and heartfelt opening speech, with his number one subject being dynamic development. Optimistic and bright, he asked the crowd: “How we are, in a new age past Covid, going to move forward?”

He felt too many trade associations rested on “the echo chamber of the past successes” and didn’t jump on the opportunity to evolve and flourish alongside upcoming trends. No matter how daunting it maybe be to embrace such change, Stu promised that CPA would face these things head on. He also hinted that numerous measures were already in place to gather information that would, in turn, return industry knowledge that would hopefully garner greater influence for the CPA. The group centred particularly on the challenges faced as an industry, with a big focus on innovation. James and Asif agreed that, as a whole, the industry is lagging behind in technology, and this was partly down to a lack of younger minds in the field. Asif explained that there is always company swapping between people rather than hiring the up and coming, so perhaps the innovation and fresh perspective is lacking. Mark agreed and called for more young people in the industry, and even though Chris sited the expense of hiring new faces in the industry, he agreed it was a worthwhile investment, and would make everyone “masters of their own destiny”. Speakers also agreed that challenges actually created opportunities, so long as hirers could respond quickly to trends and demand. Looking at technology again, there was the opportunity to embrace the benefits of AI and general digitalisation, which would in turn lead to a more eco-friendly process for construction. The second panel discussion of the day focused on the transition away from diesel, and what problems the industry will face along the way. Adam believes there is a general ignorance to what is out there in terms of hybrid. He said: “The future of fuel is looking at the problem of green energy vs price pressure.” Nodding in agreement, Alasdair continued “in 20 years we won’t see diesel. It’s had its time and played a huge role, but it is a finite source. Electricity will play a role but we’re looking to hydrogen and novel fuels.” Matt supported this by saying: “There are other solutions though. And with telematics the way it is nowadays, it actually shows you how much carbon or energy you’re saving, which helps the customer transition to a new cleaner energy system.” Conversely, Jim had a slightly differing opinion. “Diesel will last nearer to 30 years but whatever fuel becomes most popular will be used like diesel is now. Time will tell what that is. To move away from diesel we need to offer better diesel for now. All seem to say we move towards a world without diesel, but it’s not on the cards right now.”

The crowd posed a number of interesting questions to the panel, including: “Will AI be able to help move everyone away from diesel?” Alasdair’s opinion had the complete agreement of the panel: “AI is still relatively unknown. It’s an enabler for sure, but we don’t know for certain where it’s going.” Panel Three: CPA Special Interest Groups Kirsty Archbold-Laming, Director of Southern Hoist Services and Chair of CHIG (Construction Hoist Interest Group)

Challenges facing the CPA’s Special Interest Groups was the topic for the third panel discussion. It was commonly agreed that the Special Interest Groups certainly succeeded in representing the best interests of its members, even in the current climate of challenge. However, there was a general consensus that more voices needed to speak up and be heard amongst the throng. Kirsty posed that a common obstacle many hirers face is customers simply expecting equipment to arrive on site and be installed without actually fully preparing the site for said arrival. If clients could be educated about the installation, then perhaps those incidences would dwindle. However, she cited that training was an issue across the board, both for operators and end users. Peter agreed, saying that hirers and users working together was paramount to reach success. The main thing the entire panel agreed on is that there were so many opportunities available, and people shouldn’t be afraid to take them; be they new or seasoned operators, and that staying innovative will help the industry to thrive. Panel Four: Combatting Plant Theft and Fraud Superintendent Andy Huddleston, Head of the National Rural Crime Unit Ian Elliott, Group Head of Security with Clancy Group who previously had 30 years’ service with the Metropolitan Police Joel Babb, Cyber Security Evaluator with Falanx Cyber

Theft and fraud are utterly rife in the industry, with criminals finding new and innovative ways to steal from manufacturers and hirers alike. In fact, prior to Covid, it was typically between 40-70 high value machines stolen each month, but now the figure was far closer to 100-150. Economic crisis leads to more brazen thefts, as well as other world problems forcing criminals’ hands, such as disruption caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the ban on equipment sales to Russia. All these factors have combined to create a thriving black market that remains ever profitable. All the panel stressed that sharing information was absolutely vital when it came to protection of plant property. Not just with the police and other officials, but amongst the hire community. The consensus was if you have had your equipment stolen, others in the industry need to know about it so they can further protect their own assets. Records of said equipment would also aid the police in their search, especially if registered and logged with the police as a general level of protection. Datatag’s Kevin Howells said: “Hirers and equipment owners should adopt as many layers of protection as possible to guard against theft.” It was completely agreed that theft prevention was always better than just tracking after the theft has occurred. Success As with all the years before, the CPA hosted an incredible conference where the resounding issues were tackled and discussed. Everyone had a chance to have their say, as well as enlighten guests with their vast knowledge. In his closing comments, CPA President Brian Jones encouraged everyone that, although it was true that tough times were ahead, the hire industry has a history of victory and resilience. It had survived the financial crises of the 1970s, 1990s and even 2008. He had no doubts that the industry would prevail and prove itself once again.

In one of the latest entries to the market of attachments, Engcon has expanded its line of quick couplers this year with its newly updated S60 model, made for excavators weighing between 12 to 19 tonnes. Built to be stronger than its predecessors, the welded high-strength steel S60 has four hooks facing the direction of excavation. Its safety measures include front and rear locks, and an optional ground pressure function, meaning that the tool can only be removed upon exerting a certain pressure on the ground, which lowers the risk of the bucket being dropped. Furthermore, operation is simplified with a standardised control panel, reducing the possibility of improper handling. The manufacturer shares that fitting the coupler with EC-Oil blocks is now easier as it boasts improved features with minimal hoses, which allow for more flexible hose routing between the excavator and coupler. Engcon’s EC-Oil automatic quick coupler system also allows for quick switching of hydraulic tools, making often complex demolition jobs easier. Engcon reports that by utilising EC-Oil on the machine coupler, users can benefit from saving weight, which as a result reduces fuel consumption and improves overall efficiency. Safety is at the core of its design, with no visible hoses or electrical cables moving around when connecting, reducing the risk of pinch damage and wear-and-tear. First up on the tour was Glasgow, hosted on the 24th October at the Marriott Hotel in the renowned Clyde suite. Topping last year’s figures with 58 attendees, all the exhibitors were delighted to welcome everyone and showcase their fantastic products. Inspired By Nature

We caught up with Charlotte Evans, Sunbelt’s senior marketing manager and lead on the Greener initiative who told us all about the inspiration behind the campaign. “Using animals as our influence made the campaign instantly accessible to the public,” she said as we began our tour with her. “It taps into something people inherently know and understand whilst keeping it tangible.” “It gives the customers something to root for,” added Hannah. “They can see the consequences right in front of them.” “Exactly! Who doesn’t love a cute animal with a strong accent?”

Gary, the smart talking Scottish squirrel, was first up on our animal themed wander through the exhibits, leading us over to the energy storage solutions. These temporary power solutions can power entire worksites and integrate perfectly with traditional power equipment. Sunbelt has the UK’s largest fleet of battery storage units (BSUs), something that they are continually researching and investing in. Charlotte showed us their collaboration with PUNCH Flybrid, detailing the virtues of the PUNCH power 200.

Next up on our tour was Peggy the hedgehog’s energy management systems. The glowing posterchild of the event, Peggy and her hedgehog crew’s hibernation patterns inspired a crucial greener solution in Sunbelt’s arsenal. Quite the prickly topic amongst clients, Charlotte took us through just how Sunbelt was there to help customers manage those dreaded energy spikes. These clever pieces of technology monitor and react to a sudden increase in energy demand, which in turn optimises your energy efficiency. They know when to give more power and when to turn it down based on each individual’s usage, not only reducing overall emissions, but also cost to the customer.

Florence the Moth

Our final stop on the nature trail was Sunbelt’s solar solutions, inspired by Florence the moth and her dazzling love of light. These solar energy systems recharge in the day so they are ready and raring to shine at night. Exceedingly environmentally friendly, Sunbelt’s range of solar powered lighting towers are well suited to a range of different jobs, including construction sites, highways works, railways, airports and outdoor events. As well as the Eco Tower Lights, Sunbelt also has Hybrid Tower Lights, which perfectly straddle the line between fuel powered and solar driven lighting. As well as demonstrating their perfect energy saving solutions, Sunbelt Rentals also showcased their powered plant equipment, and how they are making great strides in making it sustainably powered. Our first chat was with Powered Access. Dubbed as Sunbelt Rentals resident rockstars, the Powered Access crew were proud to show off exactly what their scissor lifts could do. So much so, that our editor was strapped into the safety harness and taken on a tour of the skies in their SKYJACK 6832 RTE (rough terrain electric) scissor lift so that we could achieve the perfect aerial photography shot. The SKYJACK has 3 Power settings: On – all diesel, Auto – automatically switches to diesel when battery drops low and Off – all electric, so you get an electric scissor lift with all of the benefits of diesel! It also remains suitable for indoor or outdoor use. They also showed us their Z45 Self Propelled Hybrid Articulating Boom Lift, which is capable of lifting not only 2 people and their tools but has a working height of 15.86m!

Mini Masterpieces

Next on our tech tour was the compact equipment that eases the workload of any building site. Our editor was delighted to be given the chance to drive the Tracked Carrier 1200 R Pro, the perfect mini carrier that can fit through most doorways. Sunbelt Rentals’ engineer was happy to show just how simple it is to operate (and trust us, if our tech terrified editor can do it, anyone can!) whilst detailing just how much this machine could lift. At just 750mm wide the 1200 PRO has a substantial 1,200kg maximum capacity on ground level, or 300kg at max gradient! PRO models offer increased features such as gradient monitoring, information feedback and a smart auxiliary output, which is absolutely ideal for when increased safety measures are required. And staying green is easy as it has zero emissions. Result! We were also shown the C1e Compact Mini Crane, which weighs a teeny tiny 1030kg with a max counterweight lifting ability of 300kg. Just like the 1200 PRO, the C1e is fully electric with zero emissions, meaning this ecofriendly crane is perfect for tight spaces and the environment alike. There is also a familiarisation handover with every hire, so end users have no fear of how to operate this mighty little crane.

MINIMISING DOWNTIME WITH FUEL ADDITIVES

Fuel additives are an integral part of the retail diesel we buy for road use. Today this fact is rarely advertised, but rest assured these chemical components, present in minute quantities, are helping to keep fuel flowing; combustion optimised; wear minimised; corrosion inhibited; and economy maximised. They also help to lighten the load on exhaust aftertreatment systems. Such is the precision of modern engines that the road diesel standard (EN590) has been revised to include a measure of cleanliness – the particle count – and the engine manufacturers’ own global fuel standard - the World Wide Fuel Charter – now contains an injector cleanliness/fuel flow requirement with the expectation that a fuel deposit control additive will be used.

2019 And All That…

For many plant and machinery operators in the UK, 2019 and 2020 were years you’d want to forget. The fuel filter blocking issues that started in July 2019 proliferated for the remainder of the year and continued through 2020. This was particularly the case if fuel was stored for periods longer than a month. The cost to the industry was huge in terms of replacement filters and significant downtime. To say nothing of ill-will between end users and fuel distributors.

The Problem

The root causes were never properly established. The extensive work carried out by FAST, however, analysing over one hundred fuel samples and around fifty fuel filters, clearly points to elements of the much-increased volume of biodiesel component (FAME) dropping out. This was evident not only via blocked filters but also by the “scum” seen floating on the fuel surface within storage tanks. Although probably likely to occur more readily at lower temperatures, the dropout can also occur at ambient summer temperatures. Additional work carried out by FAST clearly demonstrates that dropout and particulate accumulation and agglomeration worsens over time. The longer fuel is stored for, therefore, the more likely you are to experience a problem.

It became apparent that plant operators who had been using FAST’s regular use diesel and gas oil additives for several months prior to last year’s problems, did not experience any of the issues.

The Invisible Issue

A critical finding of our work was that the problems are not always (in fact, rarely) visible to the naked eye. Even the poorest performing fuels in terms of filter blocking issues can look clear and bright.

So, what was – and are – the solutions?

There is a need to stop the agglomeration of the unstable biodiesel components or, in cases where the problem already exists, to re-disperse the components into the bulk fuel. FAST initially utilised a high dispersancy/detergency product originally formulated for tank cleaning purposes. This proved to be immediately successful and was adopted on a widespread basis throughout the fuel distribution industry.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

With this knowledge we moved to look at prevention. It became apparent that plant operators who had been using FAST’s regular use diesel and gas oil additives for several months prior to last year’s problems, did not experience any of the issues. exocet® Gas Oil Supreme, exocet® Gas Oil Conditioner and exocet® Diesel Supreme all contain sufficient quantities of the dispersant and detergent chemistries to hold the biodiesel in solution, or at least to keep it sufficiently dispersed so as not to result in filter blocking and fuel starvation issues.

The World Wide Fuels Charter

Reference was made above to the World Wide Fuel Charter and specifically the inclusion in a fuel of a deposit control additive. The three FAST additives listed above comply with this requirement, which is now reinforced by technical bulletins from the major OEMs. So not only are the soft particles managed but the consequences of the FAME content are too. The required fuel additives are now recommended, if not expected.

FAST continues to supply these products to those fuel users keen to eliminate the potential for future problems, which we know still exist. FAST exocet® Fuel Additive Field Trials

With this knowledge, FAST supplied dispersant-containing fuel additives for customers to carry out field trials. The field trials were immediately very successful and exocet Sludgebuster (XO1067S) became the first additive recommended to treat the problem. It also became apparent during 2019 that those customers who had been routinely using exocet Gas Oil Supreme) prior to the FAME content increase did not experience any fuel filter blocking issues even though their near neighbours were. exocet Gas Oil Supreme, exocet Gas Oil Conditioner and exocet Diesel Supreme became the additives recommended to prevent the problem by routine addition to the bulk fuel.

Particle Counting Tests (IP 565)

As a result of the observations above, a test was started to measure particle count during storage at room temperature over a period of time; one sample was stored in a clean vessel in the dark as received and one was treated with exocet Sludgebuster and stored under the same conditions.

Results of Particle Counting

The first graph shows that the total number of particles increased during storage at room temperature. The second graph shows that with the addition of exocet Sludgebuster the total number of particles > 4µm decreased over the same period under the same conditions. This simple test indicates that the dispersant effect of the additive has broken up the particles and prevented agglomeration during storage. The conclusion we draw is that stored fuel, containing relatively high levels of FAME, continues to precipitate ‘particles’ over a short time frame and that these are unlikely to re-dissolve, leading to precipitate build-up plant fuel tanks and bulk fuel tanks having the potential to cause fuel line and filter blockage fairly quickly. This can be alleviated (and even improved) by the addition of a dispersantcontaining additive.

Filter Blocking Tendency Tests (IP 387) Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) is a parameter that is part of the EN590 standard applied during the winter months. The maximum value is 2.54 (no units). A gas oil sample containing “bad” FAME was tested for FBT with and without exocet® fuel additives. The results are in the table below.

The results show that the fuel containing the “bad” FAME had an FBT value higher than the winter maximum in the EN590 fuel specification. Use of exocet® fuel additives brought the FBT down to well below the maximum limit of 2.54. FAST’s particle count and FBT work is now continual as we build a more complete picture of the characteristics of fuel from various sources in order to assess storage, handling and performance properties. We are also working to optimise our fuel additive recommendations. Our results so far demonstrate that a well formulated fuel additive, containing dispersants, will prevent agglomeration of precipitated FAME (biodiesel) particulates, keeping them small and dispersed in the fuel and able to flow through the fuel filters, thus maintaining equipment operability. Importantly, FAST’s fuel additives also contain a deposit control additive to protect fuel injectors and keep them clean.

A Note on Microbiological Growth

General tank sludge, biodiesel dropout and microbiogical growth (“the diesel bug”) can often be confused but hopefully the table above goes some way to explaining the difference. The diesel bug is associated with the presence of water and the growths can lie dormant for many years. It is critical to treat the fuel with a recognised fuel-soluble biocide quickly to avoid: • Rapid degradation of the fuel • Tank to tank transfer • The creation of fuel-water emulsions and sludge • The promotion of corrosive conditions Note. Fuel biocides are regulated products and should only be applied by professional users.

Don’t Lose Good HGV Drivers. Empower Them with TouchPoint. The HGV driver shortage is still badly affecting UK companies in 2023. Driver shortages currently impact 42% of businesses, while 45% of drivers feel inclined to quit their jobs due to the increased pressure the shortages are causing. That is why it is vital, more than ever, for rental companies to focus on retaining and utilising their HGV and van drivers. The Spartan team has shadowed HGV drivers as they delivered and returned rental equipment to and from customer sites. The drivers explained that the software apps they currently use to manage their daily workload are clumsy, slow, and inflexible. For example, the time taken to photograph four sides of delivered equipment and upload the results to the server is often longer than the time to physically unload the equipment. Drivers are forced to answer unnecessary questions due to the software’s inability to identify different equipment types, meaning drivers must provide information that is not necessary for their load. Then there is the juggling of work management apps and specialist truck navigation apps, which requires rekeying both coordinates and truck dimensions for every trip. These everyday frustrations reduce driver morale and increase the risk that drivers will defect to competitors. The costs of replacing experienced drivers are higher than ever, and the time it takes to recruit new drivers will adversely impact your operations. And with driver wage costs increasing, it is even more critical to squeeze maximum productivity from every shift. Poorly designed software will reduce the number of trips a driver can complete and decrease equipment utilisation. Rental companies that remove driver frustration and replace clumsy general-purpose apps with streamlined rental-ready apps will lose fewer drivers to competitors and avoid lost revenue due to driver shortages and wasted time. Spartan Solutions designed TouchPoint in collaboration with equipment rental HGV drivers. Logistics planners use the TouchPoint web app to group, route plan, and assign delivery, return, and transfer work to depot drivers. HGV drivers then use the TouchPoint mobile app to complete vehicle inspections, load the truck, execute their work, and finally unload the returned equipment at the end of a shift. TouchPoint is aware of your equipment types and can change behaviour accordingly. For example, drivers delivering large plant must record at least four photographs and the latest fuel meter reading when dropping off at a customer site, while a hand tool will only require one photo. Taking pictures with TouchPoint is rapid (think Facebook or WhatsApp speed), and drivers don’t have to wait for an internet connection to upload – TouchPoint takes care of this in the background. WHAT DOES ‘NEXT GEN’ MEAN FOR CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY? Next generation has become shorthand for products that look to meet future needs, but how does that translate in practice and what does it mean for the construction industry, and for those operating machines in real terms? In 2019, Cat® began to roll out a series of ‘Next Gen’ machines that are designed to meet the needs of the industry today and in the future, with the recent launch of the Next Gen Cat® 255 and 265 Compact Track Loaders being the latest upgrade. Here Andrew Bradbury, Product Manager for New Equipment Solutions at Finning UK & Ireland, discusses what makes a machine next generation and how that impacts everyday use. The British Metals Recycling AsTechnology makes our lives simpler. It makes work sites safer, ensures machines run more efficiently and prioritises first-time accuracy. In short, having the Next Gen badge means a Cat machine is equipped with the very latest technology to make operating it more efficient and effective. The machines have evolved with cutting edge operational monitoring systems, heightened safety and security features, increased comfort, and even the design and build being enhanced to improve performance. The top line is Next Gen machines save money on fuel and are highly efficient. In comparison to earlier models, these machines can cut fuel use by as much as 25 per cent and offer 45 per cent more efficiency. While machinery developments very often focus on the savings and efficiencies that software and telematics technology can bring to a construction site, a next gen machine goes well beyond that. This is achieved through upgrades that are designed to get the very best out of a machine – and to offer the best operator experience to support that. This includes using tougher, lighter metal in vital parts of the build, and powering the machines with Tier 4 Stage V diesel engines to keep carbon emissions as low as possible.

Comfort and safety

The beating heart of a machine is the operator powering it and their comfort is paramount. More than creating a comfortable workspace experience, Next Gen functionality supports operational productivity. Features such as increased comfort built into the seat, additional leg room, a heated seat, automatic climate controls and good ventilation support the wellbeing and comfort of the operator. This is a workplace designed with health and wellbeing in mind – as well as efficiency.

Enhanced safety is another cornerstone of Caterpillar’s Next Gen offering and has helped to mitigate safety issues construction has faced in the past. Within a Next Gen machine, visibility and awareness are maximised as standard with the cab offering all round vision, a 360° camera, object detection and password start for added security – and traceability. E-Fence technology offers protection to those near to a work area by confining the machine’s movement to a set area.

Efficiency

While putting health and safety front and centre, Next Gen machines are also designed to maximise efficiency. They come with built-in operator aids to support maximum performance. The in-cab display shows critical functioning, such as the tool tilt angle, manual counter, wheel rev counter and dig time, while the parameters can be changed to analyse factors such as oil temperature, engine coolant temperature and battery voltage. Trip specific analysis is also available. Payload technology also comes as standard in all Cat Next Gen machines, measuring the weight and volume of aggregates and material lifted in each bucketload, making it easier to keep track of maximum capacity - and helping operators and site managers to ensure operations are both efficient and productive. Accuracy is a key part of the efficiency savings that can be made with built-in technology. Cat Grade with 2D Grade assist is included on all Next Gen machines, allowing the operator to select the grade and slope, then make use of built in sensors to offer realtime guidance. This functionality takes the guess work out of grading, so the tasks can be completed efficiently and accurately.

Lower costs

While the built-in technology plays a major role, next generation machines are also built to perform. Maintenance intervals are designed to be spaced further apart to allow for more uptime while also reducing costs. Fuel filters on Next Gen machines have a 1,000hour change interval, which doubles the filter life, while hydraulic oil filters deliver improved filtration with a 50 per cent longer change interval to cut maintenance costs. Two-level fuel filtration is also included to protect fuel purity, while onboard technology monitors intervals. Features

such as lift assist help with stability while next gen machines also make use of advanced hydraulics for optimal power.

Operator knowledge and skills still key

While technology can be a game changer in terms of jobsite accuracy, efficiency savings and management, this is optimised by operational knowledge on how to make the most out of these features. With dedicated operator training, construction firms and fleet managers can learn techniques to enhance the operational improvements that a Next Gen Cat machine brings. WOOLISCROFT GROUNDWORKS ADDS TO GROWING CASE FLEET

Drainage and water treatment specialist Woolliscroft Groundworks has added a CASE CX18D mini excavator to its growing fleet, one of the first of this new range of machines in the UK. The family-owned contractor, based in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, offers a range of building services, including earthworks, equine building services, drainage and water treatment plants, throughout South Shropshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Run by chartered surveyor and RICS member Mark Woolliscroft, the company, which is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, prides itself on being able to complete any groundworks operation to a high standard. This includes footings, foundations, beam and block flooring, drainage and landscaping. Helping with this wide range of groundworks, the business operates four machines, including a CASE 695 backhoe loader, a CX35B ZTS mini excavator, a site dumper and now, the CX18D. This latest CASE machine has been supplied by local Case Construction Equipment dealer Warwick Ward. “The main reason that we decided to go with Warwick Ward for the purchase of our new CASE machine is that we felt the business´s aims and objectives are very similar to those of ourselves,” said Mr Woolliscroft. “We´re a small family business that cares about the customer. Warwick Ward has a depot in Bromsgrove that is only 20 miles from where we´re based. Coupled with that is a caring attitude. I know that Warwick Ward is big enough to supply our needs when it comes to maintenance and

parts, so we felt that it was a good match from day one and one that we hoped to foster and work with in the future. “When I came to purchase the machine, sales manager Scott Bunting and I had already established a longstanding relationship. We´ve been talking for some time and I´ve found Scott excellent to deal with, he always picks up the phone, always calls you back, the communication has been fantastic with Warwick Ward from the very start. I´ve been really pleased and it makes a big difference.” The CASE CX18D is one of a range of 20 mini and midi excavators, with operating weights of 1-6 tonnes. The machine tips the scales at 1,830kg with a canopy or 1,940kg with a fully glazed cab and is powered by a Stage V diesel engine delivering 12kW (16.3hp). It benefits from a variable flow hydraulic system and a zero tail-swing counterweight design, to minimise the risk of damage on confined job sites. “This is a brand-new model and I really wanted one, but there weren´t any available in the country. We needed a smaller model that could work alongside buildings. We also wanted something with plenty of reach and plenty of bucket breakout. The CX18D delivers all of those features,” said Mr Woolliscroft.

Available with a choice of 1,150mm and 1,350mm dipper sticks, the CX18D has a maximum digging depth of 2,480mm and a reach of up to 4,120mm. Arm breakout force is 950daN, while bucket breakout force is up to 1,500daN. “The CX18D has an excellent bucket breakout force,” said Mr Woolliscroft. “We really appreciate the long-reach arm and the zero tail-swing nature of the model means that we can work very close to existing buildings and walls. Add to that the retractable undercarriage and the machine is a very versatile tool, one that we can use on the majority of our building sites.”
