airBOSS IN ACTION Case Study DEAL – DAVID EVANS AGRICULTURE LTD David Evans Agriculture Ltd (DEAL) got in touch with airBOSS early in 2020 as they were looking for a suitable tyre for their Skidsteers. A few months on and they have been so impressed they have commissioned airBOSS to develop tyres for some of their other vehicles – working under heavy conditions and extremely high temperatures. Here’s what they had to say: “Moving with the times, we at DEAL are always looking for

helping to somewhat reduce todays modern issues. This has seen a big demand for battery machines across all our sectors. Yet, while that solves a lot of the emissions and noise issues, another major issue we sort to combat to help complement our battery machines was tyres. This led us to our latest search, where we soon found airBOSS… When searching for a tyre to suit various applications across all industries in which to supply to our customers, longevity and low maintenance costs were at the forefront of our search.

While this is the regular procedure of many of our customers, we thought there must be someone out there who has developed an alternative. Through word of mouth and research online, the name airBOSS tyres took a firm hold of our attention. Offering the benefits of ‘eliminating vehicle downtime’ and the fact that they ‘last 4 times longer than the average tyre’ – airBOSS met the requirements we set out for. a Machine of the Year 2020 award. The BigBaler 1290 High Density was one of the product designs selected by the jury from a record number of submissions from the world’s leading manufacturers and industrial and graphic design firms from over 48 countries. The award recognises the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product, and graphic designs produced around the world, and the selection is based on the criteria of quality design of the highest form, function, and aesthetics a standard beyond ordinary consumer products and graphics. As a winner of the award, the BigBaler 1290 High Density will feature in the Good Design Yearbook for 2020-2021.

Carlo Lambro, New Holland Brand President, commented: “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award, which recognises New Holland’s ability to put innovation at the service of its customers, always pushing the boundaries of productivity and efficiency. The BigBaler 1290 High Density is a winning example of how the collaboration between the CNH Industrial Design Team and our Product Engineering Teams enable New Holland to keep raising the bar on performance to the advantages of our customers. I would like to thank the design teams who developed this exceptional product and our manufacturing team at our Center of Harvesting Excellence in Zedelgem.”

Latest news David Wilkie, CNH Industrial Design Director, added: “The design vision for the BigBaler 1290 High Density stems from nature, inspired by the flowing lines of crops as they sway in the fields. It incorporates the natural flow vision denoted by its sinuous, sleek lines that encapsulate the functionality of the machine and enhance the efficiency of the machine’s components.” The New Holland BigBaler 1290 High Density is designed for delivering all-out efficiency and productivity. It produces bales of up to 22% higher density than conventional large square balers, significantly increasing transport and bale handling efficiency.

The unique patented Loop Master™ knotting technology ensures best-in-class solid tying and protects both the environment and forage by eliminating twine offcuts. By introducing a loop-style second knot, during an average 10,000-bale season, this system eliminates over six kilometres or 46 kg of twine offcuts. The range also introduces the unique SmartShift™ gearbox, winner of an Agritechnica Silver Innovation Medal, that delivers a soft start up resulting in greater comfort for the operator and overload protection for the tractor’s driveline. Operator comfort is further enhanced with a new intuitive user interface using the large

IntelliView™ IV touchscreen display. A range of automated features, such as IntelliCruise™ technology, which automatically adjusts tractor speed in relation to crop throughput, further enhance productivity. All the advanced features of the BigBaler 1290 High Density result in outstanding in-field efficiency, with fewer bales per field and more tons transported in each trailer load. In short higher productivity saving time and transport costs. The BigBaler 1290 High Density is built at the New Holland Center of Harvesting Excellence in Zedelgem, Belgium, and is the culmination of more than 30 years and over 30,000 large square bales produced to date.

Covid, Grenfell, Net Zero likely to drive AI and automation take-up – CITB report THE

pandemic, Grenfell Tower Inquiry and the decarbonisation agenda will likely increase adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation, according to new CITB research. In one of the largest studies of its kind, CITB asked 1,500 construction employers, 97% being SMEs, for views on the use of these new technologies. Only 3% said they used AI, with fewer than 10% using automation or related tools like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) or drones. Barriers to greater adoption included a lack of high-speed internet connections in remote areas, limited data collection and sharing, high costs and rapidly changing technology.

The employers added that Government commitments on Net Zero would likely be a key driver for adoption in future.

framework to help establish more standardisation within training, and also to encourage increased take-up.

Nearly two thirds of large employers with 250 or more employees said they used at least five new technologies, though this fell to 31% for firms with 25-99 staff, and 15% for those with 10-24.

“Given the low take-up revealed by this research, it’s clear that smaller firms need more help in accessing the benefits of transformative technology like AI and automation.

CITB senior research lead Martin Turner said: “As has become clear during the past year, new technologies can prove very effective in transforming ‘business as usual’. They can provide real benefits for construction employers, and the pandemic has in all probability helped spur on their use. “During 2021 we’ll be developing plans for a digital skills

“We will support them by funding pilot projects aimed at providing digital leadership training, with a focus on the needs of SMEs and the supply chain.” Although CITB’s research was started during 2019 and preCovid, it states the pandemic and emphasis on safer working conditions will likely accelerate the adoption of technologies like AI and automation. The report adds that the Grenfell Tower Inquiry will almost certainly see new safety requirements for tall buildings. Sensors, for example, can improve structural monitoring, while better use of data will help pinpoint issues with components and materials and identify affected buildings. The draft Safety Bill would also require more accurate records, improved data collection and sharing. Read Artificial Intelligence And Automation In the Construction Industry online.

Taylor & Braithwaite expand sales territory HYUNDAI

is pleased to announce that Hyundai distributor, Taylor and Braithwaite, based in Sandford in Cumbria, has expanded its territory to include, South Yorkshire. The new area is in addition to the company’s existing patch, which covers the rest of the Yorkshire areas, Lancashire, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Dumfries and Galloway. The change formed part of Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe’s strategy to realign dealer coverage in the UK, where South Yorkshire remained a ‘vacant territory’. T&B’s sales areas already encompassed the three other Yorkshire regions, therefore it made perfect business sense to add South Yorkshire to the company’s territory. Tony Reeves, UK and Ireland sales manager said, “Taylor & Braithwaite is a high performing Hyundai construction equipment dealer. The company has an excellent sales provision in the Yorkshire areas and currently offers great service and sales support in the County. The territory expansion for T&B will give customers in the region improved accessibility and availability to the Hyundai range.” Taylor & Braithwaite’s sales director, Ian Burton, commented on the

New Brexit Guidance from BEIS THE

UK government has recently produced some general guidance titled “UK Product Safety and Metrology Guidance for the market of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) – what’s changed from 1 January 2021?”. This document describes, in general terms, the main product compliance regulatory changes that will occur on 1st January 2021. The guidance aligns with the information that has

24 • FEBRUARY 2021 • Plant Planet

previously been provided to GTC members and provides nothing that is new or different from previously issued guidance. It identifies a number of key facts, which are summarised as follows: Only certain, minimal legal provisions of existing UK regulations have been modified in order that they can work effectively from 1 January 2021. This is to ensure a functioning regulated UK market from that date.

The safety and other technical requirements have not changed. Products lawfully placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) or UK markets before 1 January 2021 can continue to circulate in the UK. Lawfully CE marked products will continue to be accepted on the GB market until 31 December 2021. Products being placed on the GB market for the first time from 1 January 2021 must meet the same technical requirements as before –

Latest news and importers can place goods on the GB market lawfully bearing the CE marking where they have been assessed by an EU recognised notified body (where required), for a further 12 months from the end of the transition period. The UK is publishing a list of references to designated standards. These have the same function as EU harmonised standards and give a presumption of conformity to legal requirements. As at 1 January 2021, these designated standards will be the same as EU harmonised standards.

but labelling or notification requirements may have changed. There is a new UK Conformity Assessed marking (“UKCA”) which should be used for products placed on the GB market as soon as possible and at the latest for any product placed on the market after 31 December 2021. The UK continues to recognise goods that meet EU requirements, including assessment by EU recognised notified bodies and CE marking, for goods placed on the GB market until 31 December 2021. This means that manufacturers

From 1 January 2021, the role and responsibilities of the manufacturer will be unchanged. However, some UK businesses which bring products into Great Britain from an EEA State (or Switzerland) and who were previously “distributors” from 1 January 2021 become “importers” acquiring new legal duties, including complying with an enhanced set of requirements to check product compliance as well as to keep documentation and ensure their address appears on the product. There is a 24-month transitional period for these “new” importers during which they can put their details on documentation accompanying the product, rather than on the product itself. The same will apply to imports from Switzerland for certain products, for the same 24-month period. The UK government has committed to providing unfettered access for qualifying Northern Ireland goods to the

GB market after 1 January 2021. Products that can be placed on the market in Northern Ireland in accordance with the legislation, as it applies to Northern Ireland, can be sold in the rest of the UK without any additional approvals. This means that, under certain conditions, products that are qualifying Northern Ireland goods can be sold in the rest of the UK. From 1 January 2021, UK notified bodies automatically become UK approved bodies. This means they can carry out conformity assessment of products for the GB market, and if the assessment is successful products can be UKCA marked. The EU does not recognise conformity assessment by UK approved bodies for the purposes of CE marking and placing on the EEA market. However, conformity assessment by a UK body is recognised for the purposes of the NI market, in which case the product should be marked ‘CE’ and ‘UKNI’. Mandated authorised representatives for the GB market can be based in GB or Northern Ireland but after 1 January 2021 cannot be based outside the UK. The guidance document includes useful tables that identify, for each individual piece of legislation, the main changes that will be implemented from 1 January 2021.

is no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption for business across the construction industry. Topical Commentary • Construction Recruitment looking to get things moving again. Investing in having the right people in place is a vital element of getting business and their projects back on track. What can we expect to see happen to recruitment processes in the sector over the next few months? With the industry having fallen behind on a lot of projects, predicts the industry could see an increase in job opportunities within the sector. The construction industry is starting the road to recovery which will come with its own set of challenges, but also allows for major opportunities and the potential to bring in a wider range of new workers.

Medium-sized Enterprises are being offered increased funding for taking on apprentices. Universities are seeing an increase of students applying hoping to break through to their chosen profession. Some choosing more hands-on courses such as productivity and construction courses, something we welcome with open arms as we hope to kickstart growth and level up construction industry careers. Some businesses have taken this opportunity to start the recruitment process early with the idea to recruit now but have a delayed start date on any new employees. Employers are keen to attract this demographic and offering a variety of roles such mentoring opportunities which will provide more on the job training and experience making their businesses much more appealing.

The industry could see an increase in job opportunities People are desperately looking for jobs and employers are receiving more job applications and CVs than ever from people trying to break into the sector. With shortages continuing in key areas of the industry there is a high demand for construction skills in the hopes of getting any sectors that have fallen behind back on track. The Government have set out plans for a ‘Lifetime Skills Guarantee’ in order to recognise the need for new skills within the sector. The scheme aims for those without A-Levels or equivalent qualification to be offered a free, fully-funded college course alongside an increase in apprenticeship opportunities. Small and

Covid-19 has encouraged greater digital adaptation within the construction industry and the use of this technology such as drones and artificial intelligence has indeed made an advance in regard to on site working. But on-site construction is not the only aspect of the industry that can benefit from the inclusion of digital technology. Recruitment has also had the opportunity to take advantage of this technology. The process of recruitment can be lengthy and time-consuming. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can

give recruitment a competitive advantage. Offering a smarter, more efficient system within the recruitment process. AI can be used to schedule interviews, screen CV’s and using algorithms, can match the right people to the right jobs, showing the relevant jobs to targeted audiences. Chatbots can also be used to increase candidate engagement. All these factors leading to an increase in productivity that also equates to lower business costs. Alongside the change in recruitment, the pandemic has brought around a stronger than expected demand for housing and refurbishment work. The residential market seems to be picking up speed in terms of getting house building projects back on track. With many new projects due to start alongside the current projects that fell behind now scheduled to resume, could well result in an increase in demand from large housing projects. Alongside the rise within the residential market, industry professionals have estimated that infrastructure will see a rise by a third this year! Despite the slow start at the beginning of the year, this particular sector may become one of the main drivers to the construction industry. Looking ahead for the construction industry, things are predicted to have a gradual but sustained recovery in the year ahead. Industry forecasters are predicting construction output will rise 14% this year, we keep our fingers crossed that this will be a good year for the construction industry with many opportunities.

JCB POTHOLEPRO • Company Profile £1.6bn to fix potholes in Britain and ‘level-up’ uneven roads. Shock figures from the AA reveal more than £11bn-worth of potholes need repairing across the UK. The machine has been in trials on roads in Stoke-on-Trent for months and the city council has worked with JCB over the last 12 months as innovation partners to develop the PotholePro. In initial testing, the machine completed 51 road repair jobs in 20 days, which would have taken a team of up to six operatives 63 days to complete normally. Councillor Daniel Jellyman, Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet member for infrastructure, regeneration

and heritage, said he had seen a 700% increase in productivity. He said: “Potholes are a nuisance to motorists up and down the country and we’ve worked closely with JCB to come up with a solution to what is a national problem. In a time when every penny and pound counts for local authorities, we’re delighted to be at the forefront of developing and trialling new technologies and ways of working, especially ones which could save residents money.”

However, as more people take up cycling due to avoiding public transport in the pandemic and if e-scooters are legalised, then sorting our poor road surfaces becomes more important than ever. JCB has taken the initiative to fix these problems, and we’re excited to see its new PotholePro take to the streets.” Councils get a request to fix a pothole every 46 seconds and more than £8.1 million was paid out in compensation to drivers last year for vehicle damage caused by potholes.

AA President Edmund King OBE said: “The toll of pothole damage on cars is already breathtaking.

Productivity in construction is 5g technology the answer? Hannah Bounford explores how recent developments in 5G might shape the next few decades for the industry.

PRODUCTIVITY is a buzzword across the construction industry. Over the past few years, productivity has become a key selling point for digital solutions. From BIM and Cloud Collaboration, to automated services and machinery, the industry is constantly looking to increase productivity. 2021 will undoubtedly see this trend continue, most notably with the use of 5G technology.

Topical Commentary • Technology £846,365 funding coming from the government. Colin Evison, Head of Innovation at BAM Nuttall said: ‘We are really excited to join the 5G Create programme and have the opportunity to further develop our digital capability that will help us in our mission to build sustainable environments that enhance people’s lives. We believe the project outcomes will benefit our business and the wider construction industry in its drive to improve productivity.’

construction industry is hampered by the fact that 5G is not yet widely available. Despite various mobile networks claiming the arrival of 5G technology, the government have actually set a target date of 2027 for the majority of the UK to access 5G. From this, it is clear that we have a way to go before 5G becomes a factor in the everyday working practices of the industry. This being said, the arrival of 5G technology within the UK construction industry should provide answers to some of the industry’s most pressing problems. Most notably, the technology will aid construction sites in becoming safer working environments. From the use of drones, to mixed reality programmes, to the use of fully remote controlled and autonomous machinery on sites, 5G will allow the average working site to operate with people on site. This cuts the possibility of injuries due to man and machine working in close proximity. Further 5G could be used to bridge the skills gap the industry has been facing in recent years. With younger workers feeling comfortable with using more advanced technology, a shift from hands on work to more technology based skills may occur. As a result, the skills required for working on construction sites may change drastically over the next few decades.

The government have set a target date of 2027 for most of the nation to have access to 5g It is not only the use of drones, mixed reality and IoT in the industry that will draw on the use of 5G to revolutionise productivity. In time, the development of remote controlled and autonomous machinery will also utilise progress in 5G technology. Back in 2019, Telia, Ericsson and Volvo Construction Equipment launched Sweden’s first 5G network for industrial use at Volvo CE’s facility in Eskilstuna in order to test remote-controlled machines and autonomous solutions. The testing (pictured right) explored how the 5G network can be used to develop solutions for remotely controlling construction machinery and fully automated solutions. As things stand, the use of 5G across the wider UK

EC350E launch firmly establishes The 35t excavator segment Plant Planet take a look at the new Volvo machine.

THE

all-new EC350E from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has been designed to perfectly bridge the performance profile of the company’s existing EC300E and EC380E excavator. The 35-tonne excavator is the go-to guy for general construction duties. With a total height of under four meters when loaded on a trailer, it can be transported without dismantling – taking the hassle out of site moves.

As well as being optimally sized this versatile machine can be adapted to suit a wide range of jobs in no time at all. Operators can select several functions depending on the task at hand and their preferences. This includes boom/swing and boom/travel priority, enabling one function to take the lead over another. The boom-down speed can also be adjusted, giving added control for tasks that require extra precision. A range of matched Volvo Attachments

and depth limit. This helps to avoid contact with side obstacles, overhead obstacles such as power lines, and underground hazards such as pipes and cables.

Safety first Safety is enhanced by bolted antislip steps, high visibility handrails as well as the ergonomic, low-noise, and low vibration Volvo Care Cab. When it comes to accessing the upper structure, operators can be confident thanks to the 3-point right-hand side access. Visibility is at the heart of safety: the low machine hood design contributes to best-in-class eyelines to the side and rear of the machine from the operator’s seat. Visibility is boosted further thanks to rear and side cameras, along with the optional all-round Volvo Smart View.

maintenance costs The EC350E delivers classleading fuel efficiency, thanks to a combination of features that includes the classic ECO mode, selectable work mode and intelligent electro-hydraulics. The D8M Volvo engine features a power rating of 1,600 rpm while delivering impressively high torque at low rpm, and comes fitted with auto-idle and shutdown to help reduce unnecessary fuel use. With auto-regeneration technology, the machine doesn’t need to be stopped to clean the diesel particulate filter. Additionally, the hardworking (and hot) turbo-chargers are carefully cooled, thanks to an optional delayed engine shutdown feature, which helps avoid overheating and increases the machine’s reliability. Also contributing to increased machine reliability is the electro-hydraulic system, which requires fewer hoses than is normal – reducing the need for couplings and minimizing maintenance requirements. Time and maintenance costs are further reduced, due to the engine oil and filter change intervals of 1,000 hours, as well as ground-level access to grouped filters. A Brief Introduction to Digital technology in Construction Kate Hutchison breaks down the technology making an impact on the construction industry today

DIGITAL

technology has impacted a great number of industries across the globe. The world is constantly changing, especially over the last year, and various industries have found the need to adapt to new trends as a result of Covid-19 and climate change. The construction industry is one of the least digitised sectors with the majority of construction firms still operating the same way they did decades ago. Adopting more digital technology would also help the construction industry to reduce its emissions.

that digital technology has to offer. Technology has made construction sites safer and workers more efficient. It has allowed those in the industry to increase productivity, improve collaboration, and tackle more complex projects.

Productivity & Planning Apps In a world where there is a smartphone in every pocket, there is no surprise that we can put these to use. themselves at risk.

Software Clash detection software, a component of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) process, carried out on 3D models to determine clashes or conflicts within multiple structures. This is a useful tool for architects, contractors and many more, as the programme helps reduce project errors in ongoing or completed models before construction. This software also reduces the manual time required to carry out model checks and also lower the overall construction costs of a project.

Technology will enable managers increase workforce safety Drones Safety in the workspace is a priority within the construction industry. As projects increase in size and complexity, technology will enable managers to do more to protect their people and minimise accidents on site. The use of drones are increasingly common on sites. Drones allow contractors to survey an area more efficiently and give a greater view to dangerous and hard to reach areas without putting

Augmented & Virtual Reality Augmented/virtual reality is a tool used by contractors to model structures and visualise progress onsite and reflect

on their progress without having to visit the site. Virtual reality is also being used in training programmes to train workers and augmented reality simulators are used to create scenarios to help workers identify and prevent possible hazards. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning systems have also proved their worth within the industry as they turn collected data into predicted future outcomes on projects. Robots help to increase productivity and quality of work by inspecting the work performed on site to determine how much progress has been made and estimate time till completion. Overall, this is set to be an exciting year for construction technology as digital innovation services bring the leap forward the industry needs for working towards a safer, smarter and more efficient working environment.
