Consensus consultation on Levy Proposals to start next month
THE
Construction Levy rates will remain the same for 2022-25 under proposals confirmed by the CITB Board on 21 May, with industry support to be measured this summer. CITB consulted with construction employers and industry representatives earlier this year on draft Levy Proposals agreed by the Levy Strategy Committee of employers and experts and signed off by its Board. The final proposals are that the Levy is assessed at the prepandemic rates of: • PAYE at 0.35% • Net paid (Taxable) CIS Subcontractors at 1.25% Approximately 40,000 employers with a wage bill below £120,000 will continue to be exempt, with 14,000 seeing a 50% reduction due to having a wage bill of between £120,000 and £400,000. It is anticipated that due to the pandemic more construction businesses could qualify for exemptions and Levy reductions due to lower wage bills. The final stage of CITB’s threeyearly statutory consultation takes place between 14 June and 15 August on the Levy proposed to fund CITB support for construction skills over the next three years. The following Consensus question will be
14 • June 2021 • Plant Planet
asked: do you agree that the Levy Proposals are necessary to encourage adequate training in the construction industry? Steve Radley, Director of Strategy and Policy at CITB, said: “To support employers, Levy bills were cut by half for 2021, with the Consensus process delayed by a year to focus on supporting immediate skills needs. “We have since had clear feedback from industry, including the 14 Prescribed Organisations, that CITB should proceed with Consensus this year. “We now expect significant growth in construction output and its skill needs over the next three years. We have recently agreed a plan to help meet these needs and we are now asking industry whether it supports the Levy Proposals to finance it.” Of 33,000 Levy-paying employers, around 7,000 have declared they are represented by Prescribed Organisations, so their views will be gathered through their Prescribed Organisation. Of the remaining 26,000 employers, a representative sample of 4,000 will be surveyed by telephone by IFF research Ltd, an independent research company. In 2017, the last time the Consensus process was undertaken, there was agreement to the Levy Proposals from 76.9% of construction industry respondents.

SELEKT CERTIFIED SETS PREMIUM PRE-OWNED STEYR STANDARDS
A
new STEYR Selekt programme, which ensures the highest standards are met for approved used tractors held by the brand’s dealers, is being introduced to allow buyers of pre-owned machines to benefit from many of the same advantages enjoyed by customers of new STEYR models. STEYR Selekt, which can be applied to all STEYR tractor models up to five years old and with a maximum 4,000 hours, is designed to ensure used machines prepared by the brand’s certified dealers meet the highest possible quality standards. At its heart is a 100-point check of key service and quality areas, performed by trained STEYR service technicians, plus a service history check. Selekt units also undergo the next engine/transmission
Latest news maintenance due, meaning customers of Stage V tractors do not need to return for further servicing until 600 engine/750 transmission hours have been completed. A voucher for a 10% next-maintenance parts discount is also included, as are the latest software upgrades and a dynamometer test to ensure performance meets the expected model standards. All parts used are genuine approved STEYR items. The reassurance this provides is backed by a dealer-supported six-month breakdown warranty, which can be extended by further dealer warranty, while STEYR Selekt tractors are included in the Uptime
programme for one year from the sale date. This means that, in the case of a breakdown, STEYR Premium Service will support the customer by interacting with the dealer to minimise downtime via complete processtracking, from parts orders to technical requests and the repair follow-up. A STEYR Premium Service toll-free number can provide additional support if required. Under STEYR Selekt, customers can also benefit from the same retail finance schemes enjoyed by buyers of new STEYR tractors. This is designed to help bring the premium quality and technology for which STEYR is renowned within the reach
of a broader group of potential customers. “STEYR tractors have long held a strong reputation for the highest levels of quality,” says Peter Friis, Head of STEYR Europe Commercial Operations. “Now, via the Selekt programme, customers of pre-owned STEYR tractors can benefit from many of the same advantages as buyers of new models. This will bring them the all the benefits of STEYR quality and technology at a pre-owned price, but with the guaranteed premium standards expected of a new STEYR tractor. For customers, that means cost-planning benefits and reliability reassurance.”

Construction equipment hire business aims to Wow with new name
ONE
of the UK’s leading providers of hire equipment, waste services, temporary accommodation and tools to the construction industry has changed its name from Nationwide Hire to WowNow Hire. The commercial hire company, which supplies everything from heavy plant to handheld tools says the new WowNow
Hire name reflects its focus on providing its wide range of commercial customers with exceptional choice and service - the “Wow” - and same day or last-minute delivery - the “Now”. In addition to better reflecting the customer experience, the new name is also tied to the company’s future aspirations and distinguishes the brand from the many other companies using ‘Nationwide’ in their name.
Speaking about the rebranding, WowNow Hire’s CEO Jonathan Holley said: “Changing our name makes perfect sense. We still cover the entire United Kingdom and the new name amplifies what we are all about, our WowNow DNA.” “Our ongoing business development includes digital transformation that will bring the benefits of digital services to our customers and suppliers. Magni srl. launch new range of fixed boom telehandlers A
new range of telehandlers has recently been launched by Italian company Magni Srl. The Magni TH range consists of 9 fixed boom telescopic handlers from 5 to 6 tonne capacity and 8m to 19m lift height. These machines join the 20m and 24m lift height machines that were launched a few years ago. Powered by a Deutz 55 kW or 75 kW Stage V engine, all the machines conform to the latest emissions regulations. The hydrostatic transmission of the TH range offers precision and manoeuvrability. This

machine is compatible with a wide range of attachments. It is equipped with the R.F.ID system which allows for automatic recognition of attachments and the creation of the relative load charts. So, what sets the Magni range apart in an already crowded market place. Magni have used their expertise gained in the production of Rotational Telehandlers, where they have become known for their innovation and quality and, transferred this technology into their telehandlers. What does this mean in real terms? It means that Magni have real time load information with the
safety systems of a Rotational handler. The machines also have the same cab with unmatched visibility and integrated air condition on the higherpowered models. CanBus electrical circuit, Load sensing high pressure hydraulic system and touch screen display are also features lifted straight from the company’s range of Rotational telehandlers. Low boom pivots and compact dimensions give the machines a small profile that belies the lift height and capacity. The Magni machines are built with heavy duty axles It also means that the TH range can be fitted with attachments such as winches,
Latest news man platforms and hooks as standard with no additional hydraulics or electrics required. Alex White, Director of Magni UK explains. Telehandlers have been built to the same basic design for years and although the introduction of EN has brought in greater safety they are principally still working with basic strain gauge overload systems that are not accurate and easy to override. At Magni, we have introduced advanced safety systems to the standard telehandler. The Magni machine calculates the length of the boom, the angle of the boom, the position of the stabilisers and the weight on the forks and from this gives the operator dynamic real time load information. We believe this system is the safest on the market and the future of telehandlers that can be used now in every new Magni TH Telehandler.

are the sole distributors of fresh filter systems for over pressure systems in the UK. Working with the best available technology, BAT, we are able to filter incoming air to the cab and create an over pressure inside to stop the ingress of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), asbestos, and silica dust, thus protecting the cab operator and ensuring compliance with health regulations.
Our systems can be factory fitted or retrofitted to older machinery already in your workforce. We can supply filters for our equipment and for many other systems too. With our new advancements we are able to let an operator remotely monitor the condition of each cab and have a record of what the working conditions inside the cab are. The operator can also keep on top of the due servicing dates and requirements. Air is passed through the filtration box with a selection of filters to suit the applications, P1, P2, P3< specialized activated carbon filter. The filters are the first barrier in the protection of the operator, so keeping them in working order is essential.

in a Post-COVID recovery worldwide has created a sharper focus on climate change and the shift to Net Zero. Although the industry had slowly started to decarbonise we see the trend rapidly accelerating and the impact on Construction Equipment, and specifically the powertrains installed in its machines, will be even more significant than reducing noxious emissions over the next decade.

Internal combustion engines (ICEs) that currently run over 95% of machines worldwide will see a further evolution through the ‘20s but will increasing compete with zero tailpipe emission machines. The high energy demands of many machines mean OEMs will need to consider low carbon liquid and gaseous fuels to continue running the cleaner and more efficient ICEs. In the short term this will be a minor incremental change, but over this decade could see the diesel engine replaced in many sub-segments and end uses.
Commercial Vehicle Electrification is accelerating In the commercial vehicle segment (heavy trucks and buses) global CO2 and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) regulations, combined with the introduction of Zero and Low Emission Zones (ZEZ/LEZs) in many cities, is seeing steadily increasing volumes of fully electrified trucks. Several heavy truck OEMs in Europe have indicated they will pivot away from fossil fuel ICEs by 2040. This will pull Construction Equipment OEMs, which are
Latest news increasingly being pushed by their customers.
Corporate Social Responsibility and CO2 targets will drive electrified CE demand Many end customers are having to set higher CO2 reduction targets in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) guidelines. Without specific CO2 legislation the driver for non-road machine electrification is very dependent on these end users for demand of zero emission machines. With a high share of rental and sub-contract machine use, most purchases of new machines are not made by the operator. Construction companies will increasingly need to be driven by CO2 reduction across their job sites, with the end customer for construction demanding zero emission or reduced CO2 emissions. This is increasingly important and driving electrification in various segments. The complexity of job-sites and the wide range of machine usage cycles will make it difficult to legislate out CO2 from Construction Machinery in the short and medium term. However, where machines are used indoors, in cities or where noise limits restrict usage hours electrified machines are increasingly being adopted.
Total Cost of Ownership is still the primary buying factor For the broader market, where CSR is not a priority, Total Cost of Ownership →

(TCO) is most often the prime consideration when buying a new machine. To create a representative sample KGP is currently researching TCO across 30 segments in 15 major markets as part of its Fuels 2030 programme for Commercial Vehicle and NonRoad machinery. Whilst early adopters will pay the ‘green premium’ for low carbon machines, for larger fleets and those that are more cost sensitive the adoption will be slower and depend on various factors. Fuel cost remains the largest single operating expenditure (OPEX) for many fleets, and electrification and low carbon solutions will have to be competitive here, in lieu of Zero Emission Zones covering entire countries. In many commercial vehicle segments, especially medium duty urban delivery, the TCO will favour battery electric trucks in midlate 2020s. The additional cost of charging infrastructure for machines in remote locations, plus demand charges for high power rates, means that the tipping point for non-road machines could be later, closer to 2030. However it is likely to be influenced by the additional cost of any shift to Stage VI noxious emissions. Future noxious emissions legislation is expected post 2026 and may tip the balance in favour of zero and low carbon fuels.

Economies of scale may be a challenge for fuels, infrastructure and powertrain components A key issue that faces the industry is that there are currently many economies of scale for powertrain across automotive segments. Depending on their size, nonroad machinery engines share some technical commonality in the supply chain with commercial vehicles and in some cases passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. There will be some cost benefit from sharing electrification technologies. However, the costs of cleaner diesel powertrains are inevitably going to be shared across a smaller volume than in the past. With China and India shifting closer to Stage V and having a net zero target of 2060, rather than the 2050 in Europe and the US, there will be a period where ICE remains in the majority. Shifting to lower carbon diesel will be required as the hydrogen and electricity network may be suitable for on-road automotive applications, but less resilient and accessible for non-road machines. eFuels, promoted as a possible lifecycle extension for ICE are possible, but need scale to increase availability, much in the same way low hydrogen prices will not be achieved without a massive increase in investment. The debate
therefore is which segments will use what fuels. It is argued in many circles that hydrogen is not sensible as green hydrogen has lifecycle efficiencies much lower than battery electric driven machines. Nevertheless, it is clear there are usage cases where electric will be a major challenge. The high load factors of machine powertrains are an order of magnitude greater than passenger cars, for example. With a 100kW tractor at 50% load factor an all-electric shift would require a battery of the order of 500kWh, with a similar fast charger at 1MW. This may be possible, albeit expensive, in the farmyard, but it is not practical for a tractor to return to base, charge for an hour then return to the field. Therefore in the construction equipment industry we really need a systems approach to energy and energy usage for these machines, not necessarily a solution optimized for lowest fuel cost or CO2 based on fuel and infrastructure cost alone. Without optimizing for machine type the solutions from government and other stakeholders might not be the most efficient in terms of productivity, capital investment and usage for farm, construction, and related applications.

Telehanders: the best of all worlds • Topical Commentary
Telehandlers: The Best of all worlds Akvile Peckyte explores the development of one of the most popular pieces of high reach equipment on the market.
AS
one of the most versatile types of plant machinery on the market, telehandlers can be found both indoors and outdoors. The ability to interchange attachments means the telehandler can be used for tasks like earth moving, cleaning, material transportation in warehouses and construction sites, and even for lifting workers. This
makes the machine a staple investment in any project requiring lifting.
Standard fixed boom telehandler The original type of telehandler features a cab which cannot be rotated, with the telescopic boom pointing forwards. Although they are less mobile than their rotational counterparts, historically, they
have been able to carry heavier loads due to the counterweight technology being limited to just one part of the machine. They are best used for operations where heavy loads are in constant movement, with most standard fixed boom telehandlers being able to lift between 5 to 7 tonnes, with a reach of around 10 metres. This type of telehandler is most commonly used in construction and agriculture and is nimble on rough terrain. →

Topical Commentary • Telehanders: the best of all worlds From the beginning to now The one of the very first telehandlers was JCB’s 520 Loadall Telehandler, joining the production line in 1977. Ingeniously, JCB combined the utility of a forklift with the reach of a crane. The JCB 520 had two-wheel drive, combined with a maximum lift capacity of 2.25 tonnes and a 6.4-metre lift height. The machine was promoted to the public with a banner confidently displaying ‘Obsolescence Day is Coming’, asserting that the new invention would replace the masted forklift due to its versatility. JCB continued to expand their range of telehandlers to great success, now boasting one of the most expansive telehandler ranges in the world.

The electric model delivers the same performance as the popular diesel counterpart. The 525-60E uses a 96V lithium-ion battery pack with an onboard charger, recharging the telehandler overnight from a standard 230V 16-amp outlet. Topical Commentary • Telehanders: the best of all worlds ranges, and telehandlers are no exception.
Rotating telehandler Increasingly popular in construction sites due to their versatility and range in movement, rotating telehandlers emerged into the market in the late 20th century. The design allows for easy 360-degree rotation of the cab and boom, whilst the body stays stationary. Rotating telehandlers are more specialised to working in tighter spaces than carrying heavy loads, yet they are still able to lift far more than forklifts. Bobcat have recently released a new rotational telehandler range in collaboration with Magni TH. The range includes ten Stage V compliant models for the European market, with lifting heights from 18 to 39 m and lifting capacities from 4 to 7 tonnes.
the theme of reinvention that is at the core of our ‘Next is Now’ philosophy. As a result, they offer enhanced 360° performance to create the ultimate tools for even the most complex site handling jobs. A big choice of over 20 attachments and various options also ensures that working at height has never been so versatile, efficient, comfortable and safe.” Rotational telehandlers are growing in popularity. In Europe, the market has increased over the last five years by 23% and, in 2019, it reached over 3000 units for the first time.
Versatile attachments Telehandlers are uniquely transformative pieces of machinery, and their attachments can change the way the machine functions. Telehandlers are suited to many uses, from agriculture to construction, and sometimes even snow ploughing.
Bobcat have recently released a new rotational telehandler range in collaboration with magni th Olivier Traccucci, Bobcat Telehandler Senior Product Manager, said: “Our new rotary telehandler range offers an expanded model selection and increased lifting heights and lifting capacities. The new range offers cutting-edge technology that continues

Forks and carriages are the most popular telehandler attachment and come in different types, such as a side swing carriage, which allows the telehandler to transport the load in tight working spaces. Lift hooks are well-suited to heavy duty construction,
allowing the operator to move unpalletised loads which are unsuitable for conventional forks. Buckets come in many different variations and allow for an easy lifting of loose material. Telehandlers can have many more attachments, such as shovels, earth drills and snow blades to name a few, providing endless combinations depending on the required use.
Onwards, Upwards and More Compact The market trend for telehandlers in the UK is for machines with bigger payloads and more reach. At the other end of the scale there is a growing demand for smaller road towable units that can be quickly transported from site to site. The continued introduction of digital systems, some with touch screens, into the modern telehandler is continuing to make it a safer and more user friendly machine. Telematics are also becoming the norm which again help to make the Telehandler an even more efficient and essential machine on today’s construction sites. Digitalisation in the industry has lead to the development of safer and more efficient telehandlers. For more on the latest telehandler developments from Merlo UK, turn to page 57.

Leigh Tholet: Out of Africa Leigh Tholet is Hire Fleet Asset Manager at Hirebase. She talks to Rachel Lambert about making the leap from South Africa to the UK, and why it is the perfect time for women to join the industry.

Leigh tholet hire fleet asset manager, Hirebase
Tholet has been working for Hirebase for the last fourteen years, where she started initially as a Hire Manager before being promoted to the role of Hire Fleet Asset Manager in 2013. Hirebase is a division of Buildbase, owned by the Grafton Group. There are currently 100+ branches of Hirebase in the UK, hiring anything from small power tools to larger plant and equipment, such as dumpers and excavators from flagship brands.
Born and raised in Durban on the East coast of South Africa, it was love that first enticed Leigh to come to live in the UK. Leigh had met Dene, her then husband-tobe in South Africa, who although born in Rhodesia, had Scottish grandparents. At the time, Dene was in the process of applying for an Ancestral Visa and had his mind set on living in Britain. “I am very proudly South African. However, my mother was British and so were my grandparents, so I have strong British roots,” says Leigh, who explains that her father still lives in South Africa, although both her siblings have also emigrated to the UK. stayed there for three years and then went on to work in sales for a family run company called Machinery Mart, which she “absolutely loved”, staying part of their team until 2002. On moving to the UK in 2002, Leigh did some temping in the HR department at Wembley Centre for Health & Care, before spotting a sales job vacancy at Hewden Hire Centres, also in Wembley. Keen to get back into hire, she went for the interview. However, due to her experience in the Tool Hire Industry, Leigh was appointed as Hire Manager instead. Leigh went on to work for Hewden Hire Centres for four years and recalls some “very happy times”, and a place where she has met so many dear friends in the industry.
When leigh came to the uk she already had experience of working in the plant hire industry Arriving in the UK in 2002, they had their dream wedding in 2003 back home in South Africa, and have since welcomed two sons into the world. Rather heartwarmingly, both boys come to say hello during our Zoom interview fresh out of school. It is reminder that Leigh is not only a full-time businesswoman, but a full-time mother too. She isn’t fazed, but shudders at the thought of any further home-schooling. The family is made complete with their latest addition, Milo, the Shih Tzu dog, who—not to be outdone—also joins our meeting. Apparently, he has the nickname ‘Furlough Traitor’, because he switched his affections from Dene to Leigh during the month she spent at home in furlough at the very start of the pandemic. When Leigh came to the UK, she already had experience of working in the plant hire industry. She had been working as a sales rep for a Durbanbased plant hire company called Wack-Em Plant & Tool Hire, a position which she describes “as a lucky break that happened quite by chance” in 1996. the Regional Team, and liaises with the hire managers in branch on a daily basis. She explains that at one point, they were up to 130 branches, but have streamlined the business slightly in recent times.
“Hirebase went through a massive expansion programme in 2013” “I was fortunate to run a successful hire branch at Welwyn Garden, which stood me in very good stead for progression in the company. Hirebase went through a massive expansion programme in 2013, almost doubling the number of branches we had, and the new role of Asset Manager was created to oversee the fleet. Adrian asked me if I wanted the position, and the rest as they say, is history.” Leigh’s role as Asset Manager oversees all aspects of the Hirebase fleet, which includes purchasing, disposals, utilisation as well as overseeing the team of Area Fitters and the Central Workshop. She has weekly faceto-face meetings with Adrian and
When asked about how the pandemic has affected Hirebase, Leigh says:
“Like most hire businesses at the start of the first lockdown, not all our branches were re-opened straight away, so we were running on skeleton staff and of course, trying to keep our customers happy. They were, and still are unprecedented times. But the easing of social distancing and the boom in home renovation, DIY and gardening projects as people concentrate more on improving their properties has boosted our hire business to a level we haven’t seen before. Hirebase has never been so busy, and we are outperforming our budget forecasts across the board.” Working with core re-hire suppliers, Hirebase can re-hire virtually anything, making
them a customer favourite ‘One Stop Shop’ for all their site requirements, including building materials from Buildbase. “If we haven’t got it, we can get it,” says Leigh, laughing as she goes on, “We take great pride in just saying yes to every order, providing a service to support our customers, and worrying about the rest afterwards!”. Business is certainly booming for Hirebase, but one frustration that is being felt throughout the hire industry is the delay in the supply chain, caused by the pandemic and other global economic factors. Hirebase is clearly a forward-thinking organisation, and if it means placing orders now for 2022 delivery, then that is what they are doing. “Manufacturers are asking for as much lead time as possible for their production planning, so we are having to place orders earlier than ever, which means trying to predict what 2022 and beyond has in store. It is a challenge, but it is one that is facing the entire industry, so we are not alone. We are seeing unprecedented price increases that we have never experienced before. There has also been a steep hike in the price of containers coming from abroad,

Leigh Tholet: Out of Africa • Interview which have left our suppliers no choice but to pass on these costs.” Despite these universal challenges, Leigh is buoyant about how Hirebase is performing and expects this to be sustained. Leigh pays enormous credit to the Hirebase Marketing team for launching their online ordering system. “Our Marketing team has done a superb job because our online ordering system has really taken off. They used the time really constructively to concentrate on developing our online offering, and it has proved a resounding success.” The online ordering system was launched at a perfect time to support Hirebase customers, providing another option to the Hirebase sales offering, covering a huge range of tools, plant and equipment. Customers can hire anything online, from a simple hand drill to a 5-tonne excavator or 3-tonne dumper, at any time or day of the week, through either a cash or account payment system. It involves paying a deposit, and the branch then has 48 hours to deliver that order. “I think it’s great that people are spending their money on their properties rather than holidays abroad, whether it is DIY or gardening projects as it’s helping to boost the UK economy. We are lucky to be in this industry, which has been identified as a key driver to get us out of this crisis.” On a personal level, Leigh is full of gratitude for their own circumstances during the pandemic. “I feel so blessed
that as a family, we have stayed well, stayed busy in our jobs, and had precious time with our boys.” While being an astute businesswoman, Leigh is without doubt a very warm and compassionate person, and her positivity and gratitude really shine through as she shares this. She, like many other Grafton employees, was given the option to work from home, or go back to the office.

In fact, around 50% of our Senior Leadership team at Hirebase are women, and we have a number of women on the Buildbase board. “I am a people’s person through and through, so I was quick to get back to more normal office life. Technology and video conferencing has been a lifesaver, but for me, there is nothing like meeting people faceto-face. We South Africans are very social people! I can’t wait for physical exhibitions and industry events to re-start. I am desperate to hug people again!” When asked about whether it has been difficult rising through the ranks of a male-dominated industry, Leigh says ‘absolutely not’. “In all my years in the industry, I can honestly say I have never had any negative experiences. There are no heirs or graces about me, so I get on with everyone! I have been fortunate to have some very supportive male mentors throughout my time in the industry, who have helped me so much in my career. There is certainly no gender gap at the Grafton Group. Our former CEO of Buildbase was a woman. If you are the right
Leigh has some very sound advice to any young women wanting to enter the industry. “If there is a career in the Construction sector or Plant Hire industry that really interests you, then don’t let anything prevent you from following your dream. We live in such exciting times where gender no longer determines your profession. Hard work, determination and passion will pay off!” “As an industry, we should perhaps be targeting more young girls in schools to overcome the mindset that this is just a ‘job for the boys’. I think apprenticeships are a fantastic way forward for getting young people into the industry, and Grafton and the government have some really good schemes to offer.” Leigh is certainly a shining role model for any young person, female or male, who may want to pursue a career in the construction industry.

CONSTRUCTION SET FOR ECONOMIC BOOM – BUT IS YOUR FLEET SAFE? Plant Planet hear from the experts at Brigade Electronics Ltd about the importance of vehicle safety
BRITAIN
is
set for a boom in construction equipment purchases thanks to ambitious UK Government plans to kickstart the economy – but this could lead to a rise in vehicle and worker related collisions warns a leading vehicle safety company. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a super-deduction tax break that means that businesses can claim 130% of what they
spend on equipment against taxable profits. The £25bn tax break is intended to spark investment by providing 25p off company tax bills for every pound of qualifying spend on plant and machinery. But experts at pioneering Brigade Electronics says the expected explosion of construction projects sparked by the tax break could be matched by a rise in on-site collisions. Construction is a hazardous occupation and research has
shown that on average, 7 workers are killed and 93 are seriously injured each year after accidents involving vehicles or mobile plant. Driver visibility is often compromised due to the sheer size and weight of mobile plant equipment, which poses a very real danger to site workers. Blind spots on vehicles are a major contributing factor to collisions and are often the main reason ground workers are killed or injured. Poor visibility due to low light and overnight working, dusty environments and →

While passive systems, such as mirrors and cameras, assist drivers by enabling them to see objects in a vehicle’s blind spot, active systems, including operator alerts and reversing alarms, ensure that both drivers and pedestrians receive an immediate, audible warning that a danger is present. Emily Hardy of Brigade Electronics, a global leader in vehicle safety systems, explains the importance of active systems in addition to traditional passive devices.

Active technology such as Brigade’s radar obstacle detection system can detect stationary and moving objects even in the harshest of environments, including in darkness, giving the driver an audible and visible warning when objects are within a certain distance. Heavy duty radar systems, which are waterproof and smoke resistant, can even operate in high or low temperatures, and can easily be heard in noisy environments, making them ideal for construction sites.
In the last few years of recording incidents, which are split by ‘damage’ and ‘near miss’, the company has reported that this technology has been key to reducing incidents and improving safety.
“We always reccomend a combination of both passive and active systems” - Emily Hardy This includes Brigade’s awardwinning Backeye®360, designed to assist low speed maneuverability by providing the driver with a real-time surround view of the vehicle in a single image. Operator Darren Harfield agrees. He said: “The radar is an extra back up when looking in numerous mirrors and using reversing aids. If you’re distracted, for example because someone suddenly asks you a question on the radio, you can be trying to take in too much at one time. The radar system prevents this. There’s an in-cab display that presents different colours and beeps when anything comes within a certain distance of the vehicle, so it’s not just visual prompts, but audible alerts too.”

The urgent need to decarbonise is well-known; ridding the world of carbon pollution is no longer a pipe dream, but a job to get done. Green Power Systems are the exclusive distribution partners throughout the UK and Ireland for the Xelectrix power range of electrical and battery storage, manufactured in Austria. No electrification project can succeed without appropriate battery storage. Green Power Systems help businesses assess what is key to suiting each business and assist in choosing the right solutions for their site. Showcasing the company’s diesel generator hybridising and construction equipment charging technology, Green Power Systems’ vision of the construction site of the future included:

• Ability to utilise under-powered grids to meet requirements The plug-and-play technology is scalable, making it essential to providing power at peak times in the transition from dieselpowered to electric equipment. The wide product range ensures Green Power Systems can provide the correct size for any application, and the modularity allows the product to grow with sites as their own capabilities in electrification develop. Among many benefits, the Xelectrix power box with onboard inverter provides reduced maintenance costs; the power box takes over the generator during low-demand times. The power box works to reduce and eliminate peaks in consumption, ensuring the consumption curve is always in optimum range. In the Q&A session, Aidan McGeary shared that as the requirement for charging more electrical machinery continues, the grid isn’t large enough to cope with that in certain locations. This is where the Xelectrix technology steps in, providing off-grid and on-grid solutions and facilitating availability for construction operators to have more electric machines. With this, it is possible to create a micro-grid on a site where it can be combined with generators or renewable energy sources, which opens new realms of possibility for remote construction sites. Green Power Systems are trailblazing in providing adaptable green energy solutions for the construction site of the future, specialising in both off-grid and on-grid environments. →

Event Review • The Digital Future Rob Oliver - CEA The Chief Executive of the CEA shared his expertise on the construction equipment market today, tomorrow, and the consequences of Covid-19. Rob Oliver began by outlining what digital means in the context of the industry: it is the use of digital technologies and digitized data to impact how work gets done, transform how customers and companies engage and interact. From things like AI to virtual and augmented reality, the digital landscape is vast.
2019 levels. Rob Oliver continued with an analysis of two important intertwined drivers in future sales. Build Back Better is a key idea in greener infrastructural investment campaigns both in the UK and North America. Carbon Neutrality is heavily driven due to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) scheduled in Glasgow later this year, in conjunction with the UK government ramping up their own decarbonisation targets since the announcement.
ONS estimate that construction accounts for 6% of economic output. CIOB report the real figure at “close to double” Circling back to the construction industry in the present, Rob Oliver presented data displaying the impact of the pandemic on construction contracting output in 2020. All construction output fell by 41% between March and April 2020, and over the course of the year, output fell by an estimated 12.5%. However, the Construction Products Association predict construction monthly output would return to pre-Covid levels in late 2021 with a predicted 26% upturn, under the scenarios of main (V-shaped) and W-shaped recovery. The latest figures of the previous quarter show a 30% uptake; the market has rebounded very strongly, and sales may top
80 • June 2021 • Plant Planet
Construction is yet again chosen as a way of stimulating the economy for multiple reasons: • ONS estimate is that construction accounts for 6% of economic output. However, CIOB report the real figure at “close to double”. • £1 of construction output generates £2.84 in total economic activity (LEK). The data reflects how vital the construction industry is vital for the economic recovery of the country in the wake of the pandemic. The construction sector
is fortunate, as the government was supportive of keeping construction sites open and investing in infrastructure going forward. Further discussing roadmaps to recovery from both the UK government Rob Oliver and the European the cea Committee of Construction Equipment, pressures to decarbonise across the board demonstrate the need for the construction and plant sector to embrace digital technologies, as well as alternative energy sources. Due to predicted labour shortages of at least 10% as a result of fewer European guest workers, an increasingly digital site with new technologies filling the gaps will be essential to continue the positive trajectory of the construction landscape.
Owen Buttle - Merlo UK Ltd Owen Buttle, National Sales Manager for Merlo UK, discussed innovation and safety at Plant Planet: The Digital Future. Owen Buttle opened his presentation with a brief history of Merlo as he guided us through from when the company was initially founded in 1911 to Merlo’s first machinery products, a concrete mixer and dumper, to their first telehandler produced in 1981, which then developed into the first rotating ROTO telehandler in 1991.

designed to integrate well with other systems, as well as having an E-mark and ISO Certification, ensuring that your vehicle is future-proof with safety never being compromised.
Bill Hill - The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity concluded The Digital Future with a thought-provoking and touching call for the industry to support the mental, physical, and financial health of its workers and their families. Bill Hill spearheaded his presentation at The Digital Future conference with an introduction into the Charity including who they are and what they do. The Lighthouse Charity was designed to be a beacon of hope to everyone within the construction industry. Back in 1956, it was reported that the industry lost over 200 people a year to construction site fatalities, and whilst construction safety has come a long way, every year the industry still loses 3040 people to fatalities on site. Shockingly, the construction industry is the number 1 for suicides. Every working day in the UK and Ireland, 2 construction workers take their own lives. Bill Hill demonstrated the alarming statistics that dominate the industry, including major accidents, new or long-standing cases of work-related illnesses and even stress, anxiety, or depression accounts. Alongside this, Bill Hill presented the 70% growth in complex cases, alongside the number of accidents that
incapacitates workers rises to 2,000 every year, highlighting that the need for support within the industry is vital. Their mission is the ensure that “no construction worker or their family should be left alone in a crisis”, and that they should always have somewhere or someone to turn to. Last year, the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity helped 2,400 families in crisis, as well as delivering an astounding £400,000 in helpline support and emergency financial aid, plus £562,000 leveraged benefits. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity also deliver three different services. Their 24/7 Construction industry helpline is an anonymous, confidential, and non-attributed phoneline to receive help and support. The latest Lighthouse Industry Helpline app has just been launched featuring various helpful guides to improving wellbeing and resilience. With a free suite of wellbeing courses that look into stress management, work/ life balance as well as mindfulness and building resilience, to develop employee wellbeing. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity was as very wellsuited presentation within The Digital Future as the conference took place at the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week, highlighting that even simple technology can be used to assist and save lives within the construction industry. CONTRACTOR Mackley Civil Engineering has started work on beach material redistribution, rock groyne repairs and rock armour reinforcements on Christchurch beaches in Dorset.
Rock groynes are being reshaped and groyne beacon posts are being repaired The work has been commissioned by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) and is scheduled to continue over a period of six weeks. It is quite a project ahead of the key tourist season. It involves beach recycling in four groyne bays between the popular Avon and Friars Cliff beaches, stretching to Highcliffe beach. Rock groynes are being reshaped and groyne beacon posts are being repaired across all beaches. The project also involves reinforcing the Steamer Point path with additional rock armour. Groynes were originally installed along the coastline in 1915. Groynes control beach material and prevent undermining of promenades and sea walls by interrupting wave action and protecting the beach from being washed away by longshore drift. Longshore drift is the movement of material along the shore →

Topical Commentary • Caring for our coastlines by wave action. This happens especially when the waves approach the beach at an angle, which is why the continued maintenance of groynes is imperative in the process of controlling beach erosion. The six-week (estimated) project is being divided, allocating three weeks on the Highcliffe to Avon Beach areas, and a further three weeks to Mudeford Sandbank. Whilst the work is carried out, all beaches remain open to the public and the contractor can operate at any time of the day or night in order to be able to work with the most suitable tide levels. These beaches are some of the most popular and picturesque in Dorset, as can be seen in these images. To carry out this work, the contactor is using a variety of machines including a Hitachi Zaxis model 350 LC 35.3 Tonne excavator, which is fitted with an overload alert. Working with this excavator is a Bell model B30E 30 Tonne capacity 6-wheel dump truck, as the images show. For the rock repair operations to the groynes, the team are using a Komatsu model PC360 LC 36 Tonne crawler excavator fitted with rock grab. There was certainly a lot of action, and whilst on site, a 10 tonne Ausa dumper arrived, towing a fuel bowser to join the fray. Beach maintenance is very important and it is good to see BCP taking good care of these valuable assets to our British coastline, especially in times when ‘StayCation’ is King!

Above & Beyond: Training for a career in high reach Kate Hutchison unpacks the qualifications required for operating high reach construction & demolition equipment.
THE
demolition industry is a growing sector around the globe, driven by the need to modernise and reestablish communities. In recent years, the capabilities of high reach machinery alongside ultra-high reach demolition machines have increased dramatically, allowing for the increase of hazards among the demolition industry. Plant machinery can be subject to complex loading and various site conditions, and as a result, often requires specialised equipment and techniques, such as high reach machinery.
A great benefit of high reach forklifts, such as reach trucks and turret trucks, is their ability to safely and efficiently lift and retrieve heavy loads from extreme heights of up to 18m, which traditional counterbalance forklifts are unable to access. When used to their full potential, high reach forklifts can reduce costs by accommodating for narrower aisle widths. Obtaining a high reach forklift licence is an effective way of improving your career and advancing within the demolition industry. As a high reach forklift operator, you will need the classification of a Load-Shifting Order Picker: an LO license. This license requires separate
specific training. An LO license does not singularly apply to high reach machinery. Other LOclassified vehicles include turret trucks, load shifting order picker trucks, as well as high reach forklifts. Training on the safe and effective use of high reach machinery is delivered throughout all industry sectors across various uses, for example: multi-directional, outdoor use and high bay working with CCTV. LO licensed operators are also high in demand. Employers across the demolition industry actively seek out candidates with a readied LO licence due its potential to increase work efficiency, productivity and company profit, alongside →

range of structures. LO training covers a range of education such as fundamentals of admin and record-keeping, machinery operational controls, the physics behind its operation, proper loading and stacking procedure as well as the machinery’s maximum load capacity and limitations. The training will also tackle vital health and safety legislation regarding preventive maintenance and equipment inspection alongside the current government regulations and responsibilities related to forklift and high reach operation.
high reach machinery training can last as little as eight hours or up to a couple of days In 2011, the UK’s National Federation of Demolition Contractors joined forces with the National Demolition Training Group to offer the world’s first high reach excavator training course. The new course was said to bridge the obvious gap within the industry training provision. High reach machinery is almost universal on UK demolition sites today and training has failed to keep pace with the growing popularity. High reach machinery training can last as little as 8 hours or up to a couple of days, due to the extensive knowledge that must be educated regarding proper safety and operational practises. It is important that any new industry workforce employees are educated in being able to identify structural awareness and hazards such as falling debris or structural failure, as well as the procedure such machines follow when dismantling and demolishing a

The most vital aspect of any machinery operation is safety. Working at height, particularly from high reach machinery which can reach heights of 15-30m, presents numerous risks. Falls from height account for 49% of fatalities and 18% of non-fatal injuries within the industry. Trainees must be educated about fall protection and prioritise the use of safety harnesses at all times to prevent accidents when operating a high reach forklift. High reach excavators are excellent solutions for tall structures. It is vital that high reach operators should be trained to an essential level of skill to ensure high reach machinery is operated efficiently, ensuring the industry is becoming safer and more productive in the process.
